- 0:15Speaker 1: Pushkin. Hello, Khalila, Hello, let me get Stevie hang on.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Hello, Hi, Hey, Hey, how are we Stevie.
- 0:33Speaker 3: I actually had a really great weekend.
- 0:37Speaker 1: What did you do?
- 0:38Speaker 3: I saw two friends this weekend.
- 0:41Speaker 1: As in real life.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, my friends Peter and Leo, and you know,
- 0:46Speaker 3: we stayed six feet apart and everything. But like, like,
- 0:50Speaker 3: I saw friends, and it's been so long since I've
- 0:55Speaker 3: seen in person a friend.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I was waiting for them outside and I heard Peter go,
- 1:03Speaker 3: you know, Stevie, and it was like immediately I felt
- 1:09Speaker 3: like I was like lighter, you know, like it really
- 1:11Speaker 3: lifted something, and I left feeling really.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Light, like.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I don't know, I don't really. Yeah, it was very
- 1:19Speaker 3: hard to resist the urge to just go over and
- 1:21Speaker 3: like give them a hug.
- 1:23Speaker 5: It was like.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Fighting with that, you know.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yeah. I also saw people for the first time, you know,
- 1:33Speaker 1: ten feet apart this weekend, my in laws. They came by.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I think it was nice for Aggie occasionally, of course,
- 1:42Speaker 1: like you would forget and kind of run towards them
- 1:44Speaker 1: and we'd have to pull them back ground Rampa, Aggie,
- 1:48Speaker 1: stay stay back. Can I just feel ground Rampa? And
- 1:52Speaker 1: I think those were the moments that felt the roughest
- 1:55Speaker 1: because you know, it's sort of like you're negating this natural,
- 1:58Speaker 1: wonderful tendency to run towards people that you love. Yeah,
- 2:02Speaker 1: so Aggie and his grandparents were exchanging knock knock jokes.
- 2:08Speaker 6: Aggie knock knock who.
- 2:18Speaker 1: All of Augie's knock knock jokes made no sense? Knock
- 2:24Speaker 1: and a doctor, doctor nas Lagula. Yeah, so that was
- 2:35Speaker 1: kind of it was a mixed bag, but it was
- 2:38Speaker 1: it was kind of nice. Yeah, Khalila, And what have
- 2:43Speaker 1: you been up to? How was your weekend?
- 2:46Speaker 2: Just something about like this past week especially, like I
- 2:52Speaker 2: don't know, I think it just hit the point of
- 2:57Speaker 2: really sort of feeling like gray. Like I feel like
- 3:03Speaker 2: I really was like hitting a point of like despair
- 3:05Speaker 2: kind of. Uh so this weekend, Sorry you guys, I
- 3:16Speaker 2: don't know why I'm getting so emotional.
- 3:22Speaker 1: It's okay, yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Yeah. So well so one thing we did.
- 3:26Speaker 1: This weekend, this is you and your boyfriend?
- 3:29Speaker 2: Yeah, me and sam my boyfriend got a zip car
- 3:32Speaker 2: for yesterday to just like go somewhere else, which ended
- 3:38Speaker 2: up being nice, Like we had a nice day, but
- 3:42Speaker 2: the planning of it sort of just like it made
- 3:45Speaker 2: us both feel worse because we were like, oh, like
- 3:47Speaker 2: everything is closed, Like yeah. It just really made it
- 3:50Speaker 2: feel like, oh, there's like nowhere, there's like nothing to do.
- 3:56Speaker 2: And we ended up going to Fort Dolden and walking
- 4:02Speaker 2: along the beach and having lunch out there, which was nice. Yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 2: And then in the evening I watched a movie, which
- 4:10Speaker 2: is like all I've been doing is watching a ton
- 4:13Speaker 2: of movies. But I miss like going to like a
- 4:17Speaker 2: movie theater, like going to the movies. So I made
- 4:23Speaker 2: popcorn on the stove Twesdales sens oil, which I'd never
- 4:31Speaker 2: made it on the stove before, Like I'd had it
- 4:33Speaker 2: with my family that way, but I'd never just done
- 4:35Speaker 2: it myself.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And you've had popcorn in a movie theater.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Yes, I've had plenty of popcorn in a movie theater.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I once ate so much popcorn in a movie theater
- 4:43Speaker 2: that I threw up afterwards.
- 4:45Speaker 1: This was as a child, I'm assuming.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Nope, this was like two years ago. Really so sad.
- 4:51Speaker 1: No, that sounds like living the dream. How can you
- 4:54Speaker 1: be sure that it was from overeating popcorn?
- 4:56Speaker 2: This has happened to me? But before I think the
- 4:59Speaker 2: problem is if I don't eat dinner and then I
- 5:01Speaker 2: eat just popcorn with a lot of movie theater butter
- 5:04Speaker 2: on it. It like makes me a little noxious, but
- 5:07Speaker 2: I love it, so I always eat it anyway.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Wow, So you so you really love popcorn?
- 5:12Speaker 2: I love popcorn. Yeah.
- 5:14Speaker 1: And did you use the technique of like where you
- 5:16Speaker 1: wait for the first kernel to pop and then you
- 5:19Speaker 1: start shaking the pan vigorously?
- 5:21Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 5:21Speaker 2: And actually when I heard the first one, I was like,
- 5:24Speaker 2: a pop.
- 5:27Speaker 7: That sounded like a.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Pop really makes you question yourself?
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yeah it does, but it turned out really well, and
- 5:35Speaker 2: I put I melted real butter to put on it.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Did it make you less naxious?
- 5:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it actually did any success. You didn't throw up.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I didn't throw up.
- 5:44Speaker 1: What was there like something just about like having like
- 5:47Speaker 1: popcorn to watch a movie with?
- 5:48Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 5:48Speaker 2: It was nice. Yeah, I mean it did make it
- 5:51Speaker 2: feel more of like an event instead of just like
- 5:53Speaker 2: filling the time.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I guess there's something like just about the sound of
- 5:58Speaker 1: popcorn popping that I think is like, universally like one
- 6:00Speaker 1: of the most wonderful sounds.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that's great. I think we're in business here.
- 6:31Speaker 1: You know what else I've been up to, and this
- 6:33Speaker 1: is going to cheer you up. This is going to
- 6:34Speaker 1: cheer us all up. Okay, you ready for some good cheer?
- 6:38Speaker 1: I guess I decided that as a special surprise, I
- 6:41Speaker 1: was going to check in with some favorite people from
- 6:44Speaker 1: the show, people that we and America and parts of
- 6:47Speaker 1: Canada have grown to love, like you. My old friend.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Gregor a favorite.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Indeed, we talked for a while. He's homeschooling his kids,
- 6:57Speaker 1: he's taken on their education, and we got to talking
- 7:00Speaker 1: and do you remember a young man named Joey?
- 7:06Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 7:06Speaker 2: How could I forget?
- 7:07Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 7:08Speaker 1: Could we forget? Two seasons ago, Gregor and I went
- 7:11Speaker 1: to Los Angeles to help him. He had been banned
- 7:15Speaker 1: from his favorite pizzeria, and Joey's kind of a sloppy guy,
- 7:19Speaker 1: and he was having trouble with his roommates.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Of which there were many many, yes.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Yeah, many, many many roommates, And so Gregor and I
- 7:29Speaker 1: had kind of decided that we would give Joey a call,
- 7:33Speaker 1: check in with him and see how he's doing during
- 7:36Speaker 1: this quarantine. There was something that happened during the course
- 7:41Speaker 1: of our telephone call that kind of made Gregor and
- 7:45Speaker 1: I feel really good about having called him in the
- 7:48Speaker 1: first place. Because it seemed like he was still in
- 7:50Speaker 1: need of our help. Joey, is this so? I think
- 7:54Speaker 1: it is good to hear your voice. Guess who I
- 7:56Speaker 1: have on the line here.
- 7:58Speaker 7: It's a me, Joey, the one and only.
- 8:01Speaker 6: You sound exactly the same, only healthier.
- 8:03Speaker 7: I think I am healthier than the last time we
- 8:06Speaker 7: were together.
- 8:07Speaker 6: Yeah, you radiate health.
- 8:08Speaker 7: My diet is a little more varied than it was
- 8:11Speaker 7: when we.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Last spoke, when it was just pizza.
- 8:13Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:14Speaker 7: I've moved on from dale old cold pizza to some
- 8:17Speaker 7: some actual veggies.
- 8:18Speaker 6: Now, go on, What do you got in your crisper drawer, Joey?
- 8:20Speaker 7: The house? My house just went to the grocery store yesterday.
- 8:22Speaker 7: So okay, we got egg plant, lemons, and limes. Oh, leaks.
- 8:29Speaker 7: That's a fun one. Who whoever has a leak?
- 8:31Speaker 1: I think we can pause you there, Joey. Do you
- 8:34Speaker 1: still have that mustache?
- 8:35Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 8:35Speaker 7: Yeah, and I'm growing a quarantine beard as well.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Are you still keeping up with your ruler blading for.
- 8:41Speaker 7: The most part, I mean it's it's kind of slowed
- 8:43Speaker 7: down because it's not super fun to roly blade in
- 8:46Speaker 7: a mask.
- 8:47Speaker 6: I think last week left Joey he had a roommate situation.
- 8:50Speaker 7: That's right.
- 8:50Speaker 1: So now what's what's your deal? You're living on your own.
- 8:54Speaker 7: I I'm living in a much better situation now, living
- 8:58Speaker 7: in a duplex apartment with six other boys, so you know,
- 9:02Speaker 7: a little little tight quarters.
- 9:04Speaker 1: But how many roommates did you have back back when I.
- 9:07Speaker 7: Think it was five?
- 9:08Speaker 1: And now you've got sick by want.
- 9:09Speaker 7: Yeah, but it's a bigger space, it's like a real house.
- 9:14Speaker 7: I'll admit. I still am in a curtained off kind
- 9:17Speaker 7: of a makeshift living room turned bedroom.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Deal. Wait, so you still have bed sheets for walls?
- 9:23Speaker 7: Yeah, only one wall this time, as opposed to all
- 9:26Speaker 7: of them.
- 9:27Speaker 6: I gotta say, no offense to Joey, But Johnny, I
- 9:30Speaker 6: think your craftsmanship in fixing Joey's life is questionable.
- 9:33Speaker 7: No, it's way better now.
- 9:35Speaker 6: Chick up another roommate and he's got a sheet for
- 9:37Speaker 6: a wall again.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Why only a sudd when Joey's not doing well, all
- 9:39Speaker 1: of a sudden, he's my son, Joey.
- 9:41Speaker 6: Well, he was your charge. You said, I'm going to
- 9:43Speaker 6: get this guy out of his like, no, we were.
- 9:45Speaker 7: Both Well well that's the thing. See, I'm giving you
- 9:47Speaker 7: credit for elevating my life and lifting me out of
- 9:50Speaker 7: where I was. I'm doing a lot better now.
- 9:53Speaker 6: I just picture him on his rollerblades on a slight
- 9:55Speaker 6: grade where he's rolling back down and not realizing it,
- 9:58Speaker 6: he's going backwards down the hill.
- 10:00Speaker 7: Okay, but downhills are always the funnest part of rollerblading.
- 10:03Speaker 1: So you're you have now six roommates.
- 10:06Speaker 7: Yep, we've all been friends for years since college.
- 10:09Speaker 1: You're pitching in, I'd say so.
- 10:13Speaker 7: But lately, since quarantine started, it seems like the other
- 10:17Speaker 7: roommates in the house have kind of doubled down on
- 10:19Speaker 7: trying to keep things clean, which, you know, I get
- 10:21Speaker 7: we're spending more time at home, things get messy easier.
- 10:25Speaker 7: But to me, like I, I can't, you know, clean
- 10:29Speaker 7: every crumb every single time, Like that's just put going
- 10:32Speaker 7: a little too far. And so this started really getting
- 10:35Speaker 7: into one of my roommates. Every time I would leave
- 10:37Speaker 7: a single crumb, a single knife in the in the sink,
- 10:39Speaker 7: he would like confront me head on. And this really
- 10:43Speaker 7: just blew up the other The other morning, like when
- 10:45Speaker 7: I woke up and the first thing I hear is
- 10:48Speaker 7: is just him like beckoning me into the kitchen to
- 10:50Speaker 7: say is this your knife?
- 10:51Speaker 1: Is this yours?
- 10:53Speaker 7: And like he just wanted to just get into it
- 10:55Speaker 7: as my first thing I hear in the morning, and
- 10:57Speaker 7: I just really couldn't, Like I needed to avoid confrontations,
- 11:00Speaker 7: so I just basically ran away and like said, I
- 11:03Speaker 7: can't hear this right now.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Now, Joey, when you went back to your room, like
- 11:07Speaker 1: this would be a situation where one might slam their door,
- 11:09Speaker 1: what do you what do you do now?
- 11:11Speaker 2: I did?
- 11:12Speaker 7: I mean I tried to do the same. I retreated
- 11:13Speaker 7: to my room. But the difference is he was able
- 11:17Speaker 7: to just walk like right on the other side of
- 11:19Speaker 7: the curtain and like speak to me. So five minutes
- 11:21Speaker 7: later under the curtain, I'll push it aside.
- 11:27Speaker 6: Just painting an image in my mind, okay, because it's
- 11:30Speaker 6: less dignified when you frog crawl out under your curtain
- 11:33Speaker 6: to get yelled at.
- 11:34Speaker 7: It's better than that. But no, he did. He did
- 11:37Speaker 7: come around and try to try to talk to me
- 11:39Speaker 7: through the curtain and just said I'm here to talk
- 11:41Speaker 7: when you want to.
- 11:42Speaker 1: So did you ever end up having that conversation with him?
- 11:45Speaker 7: Nope? Nope. Instead he he ended up sending me a
- 11:50Speaker 7: text like I think a few hours later. That was
- 11:55Speaker 7: actually an apology. He wrote, my approach was not the
- 11:59Speaker 7: right one, and I apologize. I haven't felt great this week.
- 12:03Speaker 7: I've been overly sensitive. And then he goes, no need
- 12:05Speaker 7: to respond, just wanted to send this to you so
- 12:07Speaker 7: you knew where I was at.
- 12:09Speaker 1: HM.
- 12:09Speaker 7: I really care for you and don't want it to
- 12:11Speaker 7: hurt you or cause the vision between us.
- 12:13Speaker 5: Wow.
- 12:13Speaker 7: I only wow.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Okay, did you not read this text until now.
- 12:16Speaker 7: I read it? I read it just one dime. I
- 12:19Speaker 7: mean I was still definitely kind of heated when I
- 12:22Speaker 7: got it.
- 12:23Speaker 6: I think you just heard Joey digesting the second and
- 12:25Speaker 6: last emotional phrase of that text. That was definitely the
- 12:28Speaker 6: first time.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Wait.
- 12:29Speaker 7: I mean we don't usually talk like that, so it's
- 12:31Speaker 7: that's pretty surprising though.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Okay, and then what was your What was your next
- 12:35Speaker 1: text back to him?
- 12:36Speaker 7: So he said no need to respond, but I figured
- 12:38Speaker 7: I would just let him know I got it, and
- 12:39Speaker 7: so I just wrote thanks.
- 12:41Speaker 6: Did you send it as an emoji or you actually
- 12:43Speaker 6: wrote it?
- 12:44Speaker 1: And that's it? Just thanks?
- 12:46Speaker 7: I accepted as apology. I mean, how long ago did
- 12:49Speaker 7: you get this text from your roommate? I think it
- 12:52Speaker 7: was about a week ago.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Now, were you to call him over and say, hey,
- 12:58Speaker 1: I'm partly to blame for this whole knife knife situation,
- 13:01Speaker 1: also he would know what you're talking about.
- 13:04Speaker 7: Yeah, oh yeah. But wait, but first my question is,
- 13:07Speaker 7: I mean, do I owe him in a apology. I
- 13:09Speaker 7: think we need to address that first, Gregor.
- 13:12Speaker 6: This roommate seems like a prince. He's like, I'm sorry
- 13:16Speaker 6: I yelled at you for leaving your filthy knife and
- 13:18Speaker 6: crumbs on the floor. You're important to me, and I
- 13:21Speaker 6: cherish you and I cherish our time together.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Did he use the word cherish?
- 13:24Speaker 5: Uh?
- 13:25Speaker 7: I don't think. I don't think that's part of his vocabulary.
- 13:27Speaker 6: Point is Joey should pick up after himself. This is
- 13:30Speaker 6: not some complicated equation.
- 13:31Speaker 1: All right, So you think you're saying that Joey owes
- 13:34Speaker 1: him a little bit of an apology, a reciprocy.
- 13:37Speaker 6: If you live by yourself and you're a disgusting slob,
- 13:40Speaker 6: you're reprehensible, but at least you're your only victim. If
- 13:42Speaker 6: you live with six dudes, if everyone leaves a knife
- 13:46Speaker 6: in the sink, you've got a forest full of knives
- 13:48Speaker 6: in the sink. You're all on the house confinement. I
- 13:51Speaker 6: think it's time to be super persnickety. So he could
- 13:54Speaker 6: have been nicer about it. But I still think he's
- 13:56Speaker 6: apologizing for giving you some harsh treatment. I think you
- 13:59Speaker 6: need to step up your game.
- 14:02Speaker 7: I think you're right.
- 14:03Speaker 6: I'm totally fine with you, like sleeping with your dirty
- 14:06Speaker 6: socks next to your bed, that's in your sheeted off
- 14:09Speaker 6: quadrant of the living room. But you can't leave food arounds.
- 14:13Speaker 6: That's just not good.
- 14:15Speaker 1: So what is your roommate? What is his name?
- 14:18Speaker 7: His name is Pathan?
- 14:19Speaker 1: Is Paven within shouting distance right now?
- 14:23Speaker 7: I am tucked away in like the closet doing the recording.
- 14:28Speaker 6: I'm can you do it in a muffled yell from
- 14:30Speaker 6: inside your closet.
- 14:32Speaker 7: Now, maybe open up the closet door and okay, let
- 14:35Speaker 7: me let me get out of the closet here. And
- 14:36Speaker 7: it's gonna take me so work to weasel my way
- 14:40Speaker 7: out of here.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Now while Joey struggles to get out of his closet studio,
- 14:46Speaker 1: we're going to have an advertisement.
- 14:49Speaker 2: What a building of narrative suspense.
- 14:51Speaker 3: You know, I've been listening to this whole thing on
- 14:53Speaker 3: double speed, and now I'm gonna slow it down to
- 14:56Speaker 3: single speed.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Here come the Parade of Savings, and we're back. We're back.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Let's just join Joey as he struggles to get out
- 15:17Speaker 1: of the closet and on with his life. It's also a.
- 15:21Speaker 7: Thousand degrees in there, so it feels good to get
- 15:23Speaker 7: some fresh air. Hold on, I'm climbing over the desk
- 15:29Speaker 7: right now. Oh boy, okay, all right, so yeah, I'll
- 15:34Speaker 7: also mention that that Peven's room is the one right
- 15:37Speaker 7: next to mine, so he we almost share a room.
- 15:40Speaker 7: Really that's curtained off, but yeah, here he is now.
- 15:43Speaker 7: So yeah, listen, I kind of wanted to apologize actually
- 15:50Speaker 7: for for what happened like last week. I think you
- 15:53Speaker 7: probably know what I'm talking about.
- 15:55Speaker 5: I do know what you're talking about.
- 15:57Speaker 7: Yeah, so I know that you sent me a very
- 16:01Speaker 7: like thoughtful message, and.
- 16:02Speaker 5: I thank you for it.
- 16:03Speaker 1: That was really nice.
- 16:05Speaker 7: Yeah, probably took a lot for you to do that,
- 16:07Speaker 7: and yeah.
- 16:08Speaker 5: I just you know, it's a really heightened time and
- 16:11Speaker 5: I didn't want to it could have been handled better
- 16:13Speaker 5: on both sides.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Yeah, but thank you, thank you.
- 16:17Speaker 7: I don't know if I fully said it, but I
- 16:18Speaker 7: apologize for and I accept her for like leaving things around.
- 16:22Speaker 7: I know it's my responsibility with this is like a community.
- 16:24Speaker 5: Thank you so much.
- 16:25Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 16:26Speaker 7: I mean, it's just nice to know that we're on
- 16:28Speaker 7: the same page because then there's no tension in the
- 16:30Speaker 7: house and things are going well.
- 16:32Speaker 5: So yeah, you're doing a great job, man, Thank you,
- 16:34Speaker 5: thank you.
- 16:35Speaker 7: Thanks for keeping things clean.
- 16:36Speaker 8: Yeah, you got it.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Joey, Joey, Joey.
- 16:42Speaker 6: That was magnificent.
- 16:43Speaker 1: That was so good. Really from the last time that
- 16:46Speaker 1: we were with you. I mean, you've come so far.
- 16:49Speaker 6: Yeah, that was really straightforward. And I was getting ready
- 16:52Speaker 6: to start sweating when you said I want to talk
- 16:54Speaker 6: to you, and instead you were just clear, concise, really
- 16:56Speaker 6: spit it out. It was great.
- 16:58Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 16:58Speaker 7: I think he definitely appreciated that, and I feel better too.
- 17:01Speaker 5: It was great.
- 17:01Speaker 6: I mean, this is the kind of skill set that
- 17:04Speaker 6: only a gold Stein can give you to deal with
- 17:06Speaker 6: your roommates.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And a Gregor.
- 17:09Speaker 6: It's all you, Johnny.
- 17:10Speaker 1: See before we were both trying to pun Joey off
- 17:12Speaker 1: on each other, and look at us now.
- 17:14Speaker 6: The whole time you were talking, all I could picture
- 17:16Speaker 6: was the fade and Johnny comes on in his dulcid
- 17:19Speaker 6: voice where he's like, so it is the moment and.
- 17:23Speaker 1: So it is that the roommates were reconciled and the
- 17:26Speaker 1: apartment found peace once again. So I spoke with another favorite,
- 17:41Speaker 1: Steve Marsh from the Marshes. From the Titular Marshes. Do
- 17:44Speaker 1: you remember? Do you remember? Steve likes his seagrims and
- 17:47Speaker 1: seven up ayahuasca plants. We did an episode with Steve
- 17:52Speaker 1: about how, as an adult, he'd found out that his
- 17:55Speaker 1: parents had had a kid before he was born, that
- 17:58Speaker 1: they had put up for adoption, and that they never
- 18:01Speaker 1: told him or anyone about and Steve and I said
- 18:05Speaker 1: about trying to find her. So I checked in with
- 18:07Speaker 1: Steve to see how he's weathering this pandemic, and he
- 18:11Speaker 1: still needs a little help from Jonathan Goldstein.
- 18:14Speaker 5: Can you hear me?
- 18:15Speaker 1: I can can you hear me?
- 18:17Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 18:18Speaker 1: Has your headspace? Because I know you're you're a pretty
- 18:22Speaker 1: social person.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Yeah, that's that's been my biggest thing. So I love
- 18:28Speaker 5: meeting new people and it kind of wakes up my
- 18:31Speaker 5: brain and it's one of the great pleasures of my life.
- 18:36Speaker 5: So now bereft of the chance to meet new people,
- 18:40Speaker 5: your mind drifts to people like if you can't go outside,
- 18:47Speaker 5: you go inside, And so you have these memories in
- 18:52Speaker 5: nostalgia for people that you haven't talked to in a while.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Are you Are you thinking of someone specifically, because we've
- 18:59Speaker 1: been doing this thing lately where we're trying to connect
- 19:01Speaker 1: people with friends that they've drifted from.
- 19:06Speaker 5: There's this woman, Mika. She's in Paris. She got pissed
- 19:09Speaker 5: me and when I was stuck in Africa, her now
- 19:13Speaker 5: husband had to go to Paris or Lee so I
- 19:16Speaker 5: could get out of Gabone.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Wait, wait, hang on a second, back up. You were
- 19:20Speaker 1: stuck in France.
- 19:22Speaker 5: I was stuck in Africa.
- 19:25Speaker 1: What happened?
- 19:27Speaker 5: My friend was in a movie about people going to Gabone,
- 19:32Speaker 5: Africa to do Ibiga, which is this psychedelic route. And
- 19:37Speaker 5: I went down there and I met them and I
- 19:39Speaker 5: was like, I want to try Ibiga. And I did.
- 19:42Speaker 5: And I went into like a fugue state for like
- 19:44Speaker 5: forty eight hours, and I missed my flight.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Back Holy Kat And this was pleasant.
- 19:49Speaker 5: No, it's horrible, like a waking nightmare kind of thing,
- 19:54Speaker 5: and it was weird, like, so I did like thirty
- 19:56Speaker 5: spoonfuls of the They grind up this ibiga into a powder,
- 20:01Speaker 5: about thirty spoonfuls of it and then I also did
- 20:03Speaker 5: an additional how much of the sawdust through an enema
- 20:08Speaker 5: at the same.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Time, so the god, this does not sound appealing. It's
- 20:18Speaker 1: like you're eating like basically like a large breakfast bowl
- 20:22Speaker 1: of this of this, like.
- 20:24Speaker 5: A highly acidic sawdust, and then when.
- 20:26Speaker 1: You're done with that, they're like no, no, no, now
- 20:29Speaker 1: comes the enema.
- 20:30Speaker 5: Yeah, They're like, oh, you haven't had enough. You're not
- 20:32Speaker 5: getting You're like because I was like, I was like, oh,
- 20:34Speaker 5: I don't I can't do it. I can't do it anymore.
- 20:36Speaker 5: I was being a baby and and they're like, Okay,
- 20:39Speaker 5: well come into this hut and we'll give you an enema.
- 20:43Speaker 1: What what recollections do you have from those forty eight hours?
- 20:46Speaker 1: Anything stick with you?
- 20:48Speaker 5: Well? They uh, they ask you, like to describe what
- 20:52Speaker 5: you what you see, and I was like, I saw
- 20:54Speaker 5: some like flickering. I'm like the lantern, you know, So
- 20:59Speaker 5: then that becomes that's my I began name like, I'm
- 21:02Speaker 5: like whatever the African equivalent of flickering and the lantern is,
- 21:06Speaker 5: which is like, who doesn't see flickering in the lantern?
- 21:10Speaker 5: I was kind of quasi seeing this woman in Minnesota
- 21:14Speaker 5: at the time, and I felt like she was not
- 21:18Speaker 5: just seeing me, you know. I focused on those kind
- 21:22Speaker 5: of paranoid feelings until I went into this like yeah,
- 21:27Speaker 5: grade out fugue state for for eight hours and then
- 21:31Speaker 5: to come to and realize that Moroccan air isn't going
- 21:35Speaker 5: to refund my ticket and unless somebody can appear on
- 21:40Speaker 5: my behalf at the Paris or Lee airport.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Why would someone have to Why would that be the
- 21:45Speaker 1: terms of getting reimbursement on your on your ticket.
- 21:49Speaker 5: You need it. It's like, I don't know.
- 21:51Speaker 1: So she had to go to this airport in France.
- 21:55Speaker 5: Her husband did. And I think Mika has found the
- 21:58Speaker 5: whole escapade to be irresponsible and has really never never
- 22:03Speaker 5: forgiven me.
- 22:04Speaker 1: And that that that was the end of your friendship. Yeah,
- 22:09Speaker 1: how long was it since you last had actual contact?
- 22:14Speaker 5: Oh? Man? So this was in this is like right
- 22:17Speaker 5: before me and I started eating. It's like eight years ago.
- 22:21Speaker 5: So like then, I think it was like a couple
- 22:23Speaker 5: of years later or something. I was like, hey, you know,
- 22:25Speaker 5: I might be coming through town, and she's like, I
- 22:28Speaker 5: don't want to see you.
- 22:29Speaker 6: Hmm.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Oh. And was that the last contact you had with her?
- 22:34Speaker 5: That was it?
- 22:34Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 22:35Speaker 5: And I love Meka like Mika's. She has a great laugh. Man.
- 22:40Speaker 5: I used to love making Mika laugh. I guess it's
- 22:45Speaker 5: one of the few, kind of the few people in
- 22:49Speaker 5: my life that I've really hurt them.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Do you want to reach out just to say, you know, like,
- 22:58Speaker 1: see how she's doing in the midst of all this.
- 23:01Speaker 5: Yeah, man, that might be nice. That would be nice.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Then maybe I could actually apologize to her, maybe.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Formally, because you never have.
- 23:10Speaker 5: Really, I don't think so.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Is she still in Paris? Yeah, because I think it's
- 23:15Speaker 1: right now. It's midnight in Paris. This calling her midnight
- 23:19Speaker 1: might make things worse. Yeah, so on behalf of Steve.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I ended up just sending Meka an email and she said, yeah, sure,
- 23:31Speaker 1: we can get on the telephone. So so that's what
- 23:34Speaker 1: we did. Oh you hear that European classy ring tone
- 23:40Speaker 1: that it's better than you, that ringtone better than me? Hello, Mika, hold.
- 23:47Speaker 4: On, let me put on my headphones on?
- 23:49Speaker 1: Okay, Well I don't should I be talking?
- 23:54Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 23:54Speaker 1: I didn't think of it.
- 23:55Speaker 6: Hello, Hey Steve here, Steve, Hey man, how are you?
- 24:01Speaker 5: I'm good man, I miss you. I was just thinking
- 24:04Speaker 5: I was talking to Jonathan and Christoph having to drop
- 24:07Speaker 5: everything and bail me out of my I have beg
- 24:10Speaker 5: got stupor in Africa and inviting that Condon nass guy
- 24:16Speaker 5: the photographer to like crash your place and wait your
- 24:19Speaker 5: mom like walked in on.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Wait, I'm really sorry to interrupt Mega, forgive me, but
- 24:25Speaker 1: wait what what what is we we talked about the
- 24:29Speaker 1: whole drug thing, but what what is the what is
- 24:32Speaker 1: the thing about the photographer?
- 24:35Speaker 5: Oh? Well, like Mika had gone on a family vacation
- 24:40Speaker 5: and uh, she let me stay in her crib okay,
- 24:44Speaker 5: And then I was out with a Condon ask pho
- 24:49Speaker 5: photographer and he didn't have a place to stay that night,
- 24:53Speaker 5: and I volunteered Mika's place without asking her permission.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Wait, so so on top of the whole other thing,
- 25:00Speaker 1: there was also this this guy.
- 25:04Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, Steve, I know, I mean Mika, that's the thing. Honestly, Like,
- 25:10Speaker 5: I'm sorry for all of it, and Christophe as well,
- 25:14Speaker 5: And I feel like I estranged myself from you by
- 25:17Speaker 5: acting like such an ugly American.
- 25:20Speaker 8: I mean no, I was definitely wanting to help you
- 25:25Speaker 8: out when you're in Africa. Act when you call me
- 25:29Speaker 8: a you were like, I'm desperate. I need to get
- 25:31Speaker 8: out of here. So I was totally like, okay, I
- 25:34Speaker 8: we're going to get you out. And Christoph is a
- 25:36Speaker 8: really great guy, and I was just like just tell
- 25:40Speaker 8: him thank you, you know, please, Like I don't know
- 25:43Speaker 8: if I can swear in this, but.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Like you got to like.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Something.
- 25:48Speaker 6: I don't know that you.
- 25:49Speaker 8: Better because right, I think what was really problematic was that, yeah,
- 25:58Speaker 8: you invited your friend without telling me.
- 26:01Speaker 4: So when you asked.
- 26:02Speaker 8: Me like a couple of years after it to come
- 26:05Speaker 8: with your sweetie, I was like I had to make
- 26:08Speaker 8: a voice like do I want to have another adventure
- 26:13Speaker 8: and put up with like, well, it was kind of
- 26:18Speaker 8: tricky when you came, and it was a little bit,
- 26:21Speaker 8: for lack of a better word, high.
- 26:23Speaker 5: Maintenance, right right, totally, Oh.
- 26:28Speaker 8: Steve, I'm I mean, I'm totally glad that you know
- 26:34Speaker 8: we're friends and I'm I'm really happy to talk to
- 26:37Speaker 8: you now. And I really appreciate you saying sorry and
- 26:41Speaker 8: I thank you for that, and Steve, you're you're good people.
- 26:45Speaker 5: So we're cool. Thanks me. It's great to hear your voice.
- 26:50Speaker 4: Man, what's up to you?
- 26:51Speaker 8: How are you?
- 26:52Speaker 5: I'm good man, Yeah, yeah, I'm totally good. How is
- 27:01Speaker 5: Paris like?
- 27:01Speaker 7: How is No Like?
- 27:03Speaker 4: So in about ten days.
- 27:17Speaker 1: And hey, guess what that's our show? Okay, yeah, well
- 27:21Speaker 1: but not quite yet. A couple more.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Things, Oh well, okay, So that was a lie.
- 27:27Speaker 1: I wanted to mention that oftentimes people ask what they
- 27:32Speaker 1: could do to help support the show, and you know what,
- 27:34Speaker 1: don't send us any money, don't send your jewelry. All
- 27:37Speaker 1: you have to do is try to listen on Spotify.
- 27:41Speaker 1: You can listen anywhere you want, and we're appreciative of that,
- 27:45Speaker 1: but if you want to do a solid listen on Spotify,
- 27:50Speaker 1: because it won't hurt, it'll help. And what we've done
- 27:54Speaker 1: to further entice is we've assembled a playlist of some
- 27:57Speaker 1: of our favorite episodes as well as some of listener favorites.
- 28:02Speaker 1: This is called the Heavyweight Starter Kit. If you search
- 28:05Speaker 1: for that on Spotify you'll find it and it's a
- 28:07Speaker 1: lot of.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Fun and there link in the show notes.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Yeah, so if you're into the whole clicking thing, And
- 28:15Speaker 1: another way that you guys can continue to support us
- 28:18Speaker 1: is by sending in your emails with your stories and uh,
- 28:23Speaker 1: just how you're doing at this at this time, we
- 28:26Speaker 1: really enjoy reading them, and among the emails that we
- 28:30Speaker 1: received this week was a song by a singer songwriter
- 28:34Speaker 1: named Connie she Oh.
- 28:37Speaker 9: I am Connie she I am in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn,
- 28:40Speaker 9: and I am currently in my bedroom, on my floor,
- 28:45Speaker 9: looking out my window at other buildings. So I am
- 28:52Speaker 9: having trouble processing my feelings about all this, and so
- 28:55Speaker 9: I wrote a song about it, and I thought I
- 28:58Speaker 9: would share it with you. Every passing day, I feel
- 29:05Speaker 9: a little worse about zoos. I was good for ay oh,
- 29:11Speaker 9: fill my schedule with classes, got dressed and my makeup
- 29:15Speaker 9: even chrow my eyelashes. But a slump is so close
- 29:18Speaker 9: it might be here already. I watched ten episodes of
- 29:21Speaker 9: Community last night, and my screenwriting class is a great
- 29:26Speaker 9: group of people. But I don't think I'm a writer.
- 29:29Speaker 9: I'm more of a sleeper in my dreams. I can float.
- 29:32Speaker 9: I don't feel any pressure. I am light as the weather.
- 29:38Speaker 9: Is it morning? Alrighty? Where is the sun? I lost
- 29:41Speaker 9: my marble somewhere in the bathroom, and I can feel
- 29:45Speaker 9: all my atoms are shaking with what can't be done.
- 29:52Speaker 9: It's hard to feel lucky without feeling guilty. A soundtrack
- 29:56Speaker 9: of sirens, hants and connects me. The future feels heavy
- 30:01Speaker 9: and I miss my mom. I've got no room to pace,
- 30:07Speaker 9: so my mind is what's right, but it's more of
- 30:10Speaker 9: a stumble with no distance I'm covering. I know now
- 30:13Speaker 9: is the time to create that. I'm hungry again. Is
- 30:20Speaker 9: it morning? Already?
- 30:21Speaker 1: Aware?
- 30:22Speaker 9: Is the sign? I lost my marble somewhere in the bathroom,
- 30:26Speaker 9: and I can feel all my atoms or shaking with
- 30:29Speaker 9: what can't be done. I know that something has ended
- 30:35Speaker 9: and something's begun, and I just wish someone could give
- 30:38Speaker 9: me more answers, or tell me just close your eyes
- 30:42Speaker 9: and then open when I
- 30:44Speaker 7: Get to one
