- Nathan Hawthorne: honestly, just like Kyler Murray this week, I decided I was gonna download Call of Duty. New game just came out, Modern Warfare four. I'm I'm a big Call of Duty guy, you know this. I just after a year of Omni movement, I'm not really sure I enjoy this kind of game right now, Call of Duty. But the the bigger problem is I I just ain't got the hands anymore. Kids are just moving quicker. They're what do you wanna call it? Their reaction time is faster. I'm a dad now, okay? Nah, I'm not getting sleep. I it just I feel like my hands are brittle. I just don't have it anymore. I can't remember the last time I was really sitting down playing Call of Duty. Was I Crimson in the last game? Rank play, yeah, shout out variant. But man, I just don't have it anymore for Call of Duty. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. You've officially reached unk status, I think, is what the kids say. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, I'm gonna have to get a single player game or something like that. Anyways, my name's Nathan Hawthorne. This is my co-host Jared McEnroy. Welcome to KYP Soft Opening. man, what a great time to be watching NFL football. there's so much parody this year across the NFL and across college football too. We can talk about that later. but we've got a week seven breakdown for you, talking about the winners, talking about the losers, some of the best performances, some of the biggest blunders. and then if you stay tuned, we'll give you perhaps a sneak peek of what we've got breaking down for week eight. So, Jared, do you wanna kick us off? Jarod McInroy: Let's kick us off. We're gonna start off with our victory laps for the week. And I got one that I'm excited to give you because you were just talking mess on them last week here. The victory lap goes hang on. Hang on. Nathan Hawthorne: And can we go through the hang on Jarod McInroy: Nope. No, no, no. I have the mic. just a heads up, I'm sticking in New York this this week for both my victory lap and my walk of shame. So we're gonna start with the the New York football giants as my victory lap. They earned their bye week. They they're they got a bye week coming up. no one wants this division. Nobody like it it's wide open. It's right there for you. and and they're going and getting it getting it. They they ran the ball exceptionally well against a top ten run defense. although their defense is not playing great in the Texans, they they still are ranked in the top ten in total defense. So Cam Scadabo 17 carries, 127 yards and a touchdown. Stand up, big fella. And then not to mention, you got three other guys with touch rushing touchdowns this week. Tyrone, Tracy, Singletary, and Jameis, all with the T D on the ground. And then going over to JJ, JJ just fed his targets. If if you if you look at his dispersion, fifty percent of his targets went to Malik Neighbors and to Malachi Fields. So he was he he knows who needs the ball in their hands and he was throwing it to him. And sometimes when you're trying to earn a job and you have a team that doesn't have a clear Q B one because Jackson Dart is injured right now, that's all you can do is don't turn the ball over and feed your targets. So zero touchdowns in er zero interceptions, but he's still through for two fifty. that if again, just an exceptional performance around around the horn in the Giants locker room, but The the really big thing for them is they now get to watch the Eagles and Cowboys tonight. This is being recorded on Monday. So we have not seen that game yet. so now going into their bye week and then following up with a game against the Eagles, they get to kinda just sit back, put together a game plan and all of a sudden you could be you know, five two and one come two weeks from now. So yeah, hats off to the Giants and they're my victory lap this week. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. with the Giants, I still think that the jury's out on JJ McCarthy. He's proven the ability that he has the NFL arm. does it look like he's putting everything he can into some of these throws? Yeah, absolutely. Is he staring down those targets? Yeah, I think so. But the good news is, is he's clearly able to execute an offense. and so you're looking at Matt Nagy, a guy who I've had issues with in terms of his play calling and play structure. He's setting it up for him. You've got Greg Roman in the building, and then you've got Brian Callahan. former head head coach of the Titans, was the QB coach slash offensive coordinator with with Joe Burrow and the Bengals. So there is a lot of offensive support surrounding JJ McCarthy. I think certainly a better situation than being in Minnesota, where just obviously he wasn't liked. It had little to do with his play, probably most to do with just not being liked in the building and not being able to execute what KOC he was looking. But again back to the Giants, you know, you they keep winning games. I don't think that they've done anything that's out of this world, but again, like you said, they earn the bi week and they'll I'll tip the cap to that. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, and their defense is playing great. I mean better than even anticipated in Nathan Hawthorne: They've had they've had great defense. They've had great defensive talent for the last three, four years. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, total total yards allowed to their top ten, their top five in passing yards allowed a game. Like they're they're playing exceptionally well and we kinda knew that going into the season again. bolstering it up even more with Arvell Reese. yeah, I know you have your qualms with John Harbaugh as a coach in general, but I I kinda I liked the move going and getting somebody who can add some stability to this team that didn't have a clear direction, didn't have any stability, and they have a lot of young, impressionable players who have a lot of talent. And that's that can be a recipe for success. yeah, the the the success I can't ch chalk it up to really No, I you know what? I am gonna give some some flowers to their offense. I I did give them this week, but Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, you have to. You have to. Jarod McInroy: like they're putting up twenty eight here, they're putting up thirty here, like th they're They're winning games. They're putting up a lot of points against a lot of good defenses. So, yeah, that's my victory lap. Who do you got this week? Nathan Hawthorne: My victory lap is none none other. This should be obvious to everybody. And if you listened to the pod what last week, you knew I was high on this team going in. It's gonna be the Atlanta Falcons defeating the San Francisco 49ers, one of the remaining undefeated teams. Getting that win is huge for morale for Kevin Stefansky and his team. just further convincing the guys, hey, we are a strong and capable team. But I love the way that they did it. Kevin Stefanski never bailed on the run. Bijan still had 20 carries. It was only 63 yards, but still had 20 carries. And then while that wasn't working, they found other ways to get Bijan Robinson the football. so we had he led the team, he was s not led the team in targets, he was second in targets, had 59 yards receiving. So again, they kept him active. And just knowing that Bijan can pop off a run at any time, that just forced that San Francisco 49ers defense to stay honest. And the biggest part of this offense is they were hardly giving up any pressures. For Michael Penix. He was able to stay clean in the pocket. And we know, just like most NFL QBs, if you stay clean in the pocket, you're going to be able to deliver the football. 25 of 34, throwing three passing touchdowns. this is what Kevin Stefanski wants to be able to do: run the ball, protect the quarterback, and let your playmakers make play. So I was impressed by that. and again, against a really, really solid 49ers defense, they weathered that early storm of this vicious run game script that Kyle Shanahan had put together. And then you force them into passing. Brock Purdy throwing the ball 40 times, not a recipe for success. We know that he can execute an offense, but he's not going to elevate a roster, especially a roster that is lacking in their receiving weapons. So again, you've got to tip the cap to the to the Falcons. And again, you made ground this week. The Carolina Panthers lost. The Buccaneers beat the Panthers. So that again, again, offsets it. So you've reintroduced yourself to having a chance to win this. muddied up division in the NFC South. So victory lap goes to the Atlanta Falcons. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, I'm not I'm gonna pause the Brock Purdy slander because we need to reevaluate as a as a collective here at KYP. I know you had said he would not elevate, but I th I would argue he's elevated this team this year. with just Nathan Hawthorne: I wouldn't. Jarod McInroy: rotating weapons, really. Nathan Hawthorne: They the the this was the first time that they were truly rotating weapons was this game. This was the first time. Up until that he had his n up Jarod McInroy: Okay. This is the first game with injuries. Nathan Hawthorne: up at up until that he had his leading target, Mike Evans, which is really all you need in the Shanahan offense. And yeah, maybe some other guys don't have as many targets. Christian Kirk was back to being elevated. You still had George Kittle. And let's not act like Christian McCaffrey's not half of his receiving yards, anyways. So again, he hasn't elevated this Jarod McInroy: He's making a lot of plays on his feet. He's making a lot of really good throws. Nathan Hawthorne: All all all I'm saying is this was his this was his o this was his opportunity to elevate. He threw it 40 times and he had two picks. Again, Brock Purdy. We talked about some of those turnovers that he has that are just dumbfounded. And both of those turnovers were dumbfounding. One, he was trying to throw it away. If you're throwing it away, throw it away. Not Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: it not in bounds for somebody to be able to get. And then the second one was just honestly a great play by the defense. again, fooling him. So If you throw forty times and it's your first time throwing forty times this year and you don't win, it makes me question your ability to elevate. I'm not saying he hasn't thrown Jarod McInroy: All right. Nathan Hawthorne: with accuracy this year. I'm not saying he hasn't, played well, but I'm saying again, in that moment you needed him to elevate the team, he just stayed right where he was. Jarod McInroy: You're right. You're right. Listen. And also this is a victory lap for the Falcons. So let's Nathan Hawthorne: This is the victory lap. This is a victory lap for the Falcons. Jarod McInroy: let's move on to the walk of shame. Let's this is the segment where we dedicate some time to crapping on somebody. So who who do who do you have for the walk of shame? Nathan Hawthorne: I I can't believe this happened live in 4K. The Carolina Panthers just got absolutely walked down and ran down by the Buccaneers Panthers. This was the opportunity for teams to take you seriously. You're playing against a Bucks team that is just getting Baker Mayfield back, so maybe you're preparing for a heavy pass script, but you just let Bucky Irving go crazy on you. You had previously been giving up in the last couple of bouts about 90 rushing yards per game, and you give up over 200. At home, it just looked like they came out not ready to play on offense or on defense. And to me, if you're Dave Canales and you're again trying to make this team relevant and trying to make this team one of the more feared teams in the NFL, people talking about maybe you're in that top 10 power rankings. This is a game you have to win in division. And they it and they just didn't. this team was reeling. You had previously held Jameer Gibbs to only 40 some odd yards. So how are you again, how are you just letting Bucky Irving do this to you? So Again, it wasn't it's not necessarily anything that they did poorly, 'cause they just did everything poorly. It's an embarrassing way to lose. It's an embarrassing way to lose at home. And I know that the Buccaneers defense is good, but there is no excuse to be looking that poor on on defense. So the the walk of shame goes to the Carolina Panthers. Again, opportunity to start creating separation in the division. And now we're looking at this NFC's NFC South Division again, like, geez, like it's up in the air again. We're going to have a slightly above 500 or less than 500 team, 8-9, 9-8, win this division again. Hate to see it. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, I think you nailed that. I think you nail that with the we we have to see something that makes us take them seriously as a ball club. I it's not about just winning this division. It's not. It it can't be. That cannot be your end goal. Now of course Nathan Hawthorne: Can't be the standard. Jarod McInroy: you want to, of course you want to. but you want to take it convincingly and then prove that you have a chance to actually compete in the playoffs. You played a really good game last year against the Rams and we all were kinda like, hang on, the Panthers might be on to something. And we are not so convinced anymore, especially with the Falcons win against the 49ers. that was another that's a game where we were convinced. We we saw them show up against a really good team and now we're kinda like, maybe this is the Falcons division to lose. So yeah, that's tough. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. that's what we said in the offseason for the Falcons, right? They just have too much talent to not win this division. And again, you had the opportunity to create some separation. Baker Mayfield threw the ball eleven times, dog. You see you see 43 points on the board. You gotta be thinking, man, Baker Mayfield, did he have eight touchdown passes? No. Bucky Irving, twenty four carries. Kenneth Gainwell, fourteen carries, Sean Tucker, seven carries. They just say, Hey man, if you if it ain't broke, don't fix it. We're gonna keep running the football. Kept the ball out of your own hands and Bryce Young just he he looked like rookie year, Jarod McInroy: That's a Nathan Hawthorne: Bryce Young. Jarod McInroy: that's a bottom ten performance in the last decade. that was an all time all time low, but you Nathan Hawthorne: That's bad. That's Jarod McInroy: gotta hope it's just a one week thing. W in the NFL, it can definitely be a week to week league. Shake it off, come out and prove next week that that's not the case. You can't. Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: But you can't get caught sleeping like that against a one in five team in division. You gotta you can you can have that happen maybe again Jarod McInroy: Mm. Nathan Hawthorne: the Bills come to town, but you gotta wake up. Anyways, who's your walk of shame this week? You said you were staying in New York. Jarod McInroy: Somebody somebody else who got absolutely beat down. Well, they weren't beat down. Honestly, the game felt like they were getting beat down. It was a three point game all sudden done, but my walk of shame goes to the New York Jets. you lost to the one and only team actively trying to lose in the NFL. you've looked decent this year. Your coaching staff is fighting for their lives. I'm at the point with Aaron Glenn where I'm like, is he really a defensive head coach? w for in what way? In what way is he a defensive head coach? Because he's not doing it yet again. You just got beat by Ollie Gordon, freaking Caleb Douglas and Nathan Hawthorne: Hey that boy can tote the rock. Jarod McInroy: Malik Willis. No, they can. And I'm I'm a Dolphins fan. Of course I you know, I believe in these guys, but th they're not trying to win. This is like the Chauncey Billets Blazers. Like they're actively trying to lose games and you you gave this game up, Yeah, at this point with with Aaron Glenn, I I genuinely want to know what he brings to the defensive side of the ball. The scheme just looked confused. His players didn't know where to be on coverages. they were not playing together. what are you playing for this year? Because you started winning a couple games and now you're not anymore. So it's they've lost the direction that we thought they had to begin the year. Gino doesn't look great anymore. The the offense is confused, but also again, it it really is just the competition you're playing against. You're at home against the Miami Dolphins too. This is a division opponent. You're supposed to know them better than anybody else. And yes, I know it's a new look Dolphins team. However, it's not a great look. and yeah, I I think it might be time for a change. I'm gonna take a page out of your book here. Aaron Glenn, congratulations, you are the Los Angeles Rams DC next year. so Nathan Hawthorne: This you know, it is tough. And you said we talking about their direction. I never had faith in the direction from the coaching perspective. Again, they have the talent to win 10 games, but they are just going to continue to have coaching gaffes all over the place. You mentioned something pretty unique here about that offense looking good for a couple of games. You who their offensive coordinator is? Jarod McInroy: I actually don't I don't know my personnel. no. Nathan Hawthorne: It's it's Frank Reich. It's Frank Reich. who cannot develop the offense, but besides the the set playbook that they have and the script that they run, Frank Reich. So we're gonna see this team continue to have struggles, continue to struggle getting the ball to their weapons. A la Garrett Wilson. I know Omar Cooper Jr. looked great. but again, Brees Hall is still hurt. Maybe that's affecting yeah how things are going, but Brandon Allen's been doing just fine. Yeah, again, th the defense is shameful. coaching decisions and execution is shameful and if you are supposed to be a defensive head coach, your side of the ball needs to look good and and it's not looking good at all. Jarod McInroy: No. Al Ollie Gordon just ran all over you, so I like that tandem though, with him and and A Chang coming back. I'm I'm convinced, so I'm not gonna, you know, bag on it too much, but Nathan Hawthorne: You think A-chan's coming back? We'll talk about that next week. Yeah, make sure you guys stay tuned next Jarod McInroy: Yes he is. Nathan Hawthorne: week. We're going to be doing a NFL trade deadline special. We're going to be talking about who needs to make moves right now, what they need to pay for it, and how desperately they need to do it and who they should be targeting. So make sure you stay tuned for that. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, sticking with this week, let's let's move on to our next segment here. We got the performance of the week. Who you got? Nathan Hawthorne: I've got Jackson Smith and Jigba as the performance of the week. Nine catches, 150 yards, and a touchdown. Jackson Smith and Jigba is wide receiver one right now. And I'm gonna be honest, I don't think it's close. I love Justin Jefferson. I love Jamar Chase. But the thing that makes JSN so special is not only do I think he has maybe the more limited quarterback amongst some of the great wide receivers in the league right now. You think about Puka and he's got Stafford, you think about CeeDee Lamb, he's got Dak Prescott. He is so great. At controlling the pace of the game for him as an individual on the field. When you talk about route running, people think, he's just got he's in and out of breaks really fast. Not only is he in and out of breaks really fast, but his body positioning is perfect. His hands are elite at the point of the catch. He is controlling everything from a wide receiver's perspective. A lot of wide receivers, you'll see them start to take that outside release and get washed outside the numbers. Quarterback has no room to get the ball. He'll challenge a guy inside, go up the numbers, squeeze him further in, leave all the room in the world for Sam Darnold to throw the football. he will do things like slow down. Antonio Brown used to be great at this. Tyler Lockett, Doug Baldwin, other s quote unquote smaller wide receivers who need to control the game. You just slow down a little bit, let that ball keep traveling, accelerate at the last second, catch it over your shoulder. Those kind of things that a wide receiver does. makes it so much easier for the quarterback to complete the football. Again, so it's not just this week. It's been every week. People talked about how it might be tough this year, without Clint Kubiak. And still Darnold is finding a way to get the ball to Jackson Smith and Jigba. Now he's spinning it. Yes, he has the turnovers, but what Jackson Smith and Jigba is doing to create more opportunities and create better opportunities for Sam Darnold to throw him the football is making him the best wide receiver in the game right now. It's better than what Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: Jamar Chase is doing. Who is great contested catches, great after the catch, but again, he's just he's setting things up so masterfully with his releases off the line. I could just gush about him all day. Jackson Pith and Jigba, he's special and he is the performer of the week. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, he's like Winco, he's always open. I and it's you can Nathan Hawthorne: Jeez Louise. He said he said Monsour Delane. Welcome to the league, son. Woo wee. And it but listen, Delane on that on that little over the shoulder, that ball, Jarod McInroy: That wa that was a tough look, man. He cooked him on many times. He had him he had him begging for a flag. Nathan Hawthorne: on that ball over the shoulder. Yeah, I know. He was like, he pushed off. There was no push off there. On that ball over the shoulder though, Delane was in almost perfect coverage. There's just nothing you can do when a guy is that great at his craft. It's special. It's special. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, no, and it's i not even just the catch, but the awareness, knowing where the sideline is, knowing he he's not even sweating that his feet are in. Like he he it's he secured if you watch it in slow motion too, you watch him secure it, look at his hands. He doesn't care about where his feet are because he knows his positioning is perfect. It's yeah, Nathan Hawthorne: He knows he knows where they're at. He knows where they're at. Jarod McInroy: it's it's just a master class. He is wide receiver one. It's not not even up for debate at this point. But for my performance of the week, we're staying in Seattle, I guess. the Seattle defense. Not a single play allowed for the Chiefs in the red zone. The entire game. The Chiefs did not make it into the red zone. start to finish. That's that's kind of enough said, right? Like I don't really need to elaborate too much beyond that, but I'm going to only eleven first downs, two hundred and thirteen total yards allowed on offense. and then the the time of possession, twenty four for the Chiefs, thirty minutes for the Seahawks. So Now the Seahawks did a really good job actually getting their run game going finally. They controlled the ball very well, but a lot of three and outs their defense was getting the ball back to them and in pretty good field position. So yeah, I mean to perform this well and only have one sack is kind of absurd. Pat felt rushed the entire game. He was thrown off of his back foot, on the move constantly, getting pressured from left, right, and center and kind of hats off to him honestly getting the ball out every single time and only allowing one sack with the amount of pressure they were able to get on him. just shows how good he is. But yeah, just an absurd performance against an Andy Reed led team that we have not seen too many times. So I I'm giving it to the Seattle defense this week. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, Seattle defense, they called their bluff. They said if you can't run the ball with Kenneth Walker, you can't do anything else right now. Your receiving core just isn't healthy and talented enough to be able to deal with anybody on our back end, plus the pressure that we're gonna be able to put on Patrick Mahomes. And I hate to say he got Drake made, but he kind of got Drake made. Under pressure, scrambling, getting rid of it. Now you can see the difference in the two quality of the quarterbacks by the way where they they were able to manage those things. But again, the Seahawks defense, I think Nick Imanwari. Isn't just one of the best defenders in football. He might be the best athlete in the NFL. His size, again, going stride for stride for with Xavier Worthy. Who's doing that right now in terms of the speed? Chasing him across the field. And then on the next play, he's on the line of scrimmage rushing the passer. He's a low safety in the box. he can put him anywhere. We thought Kyle Hamilton was a chess piece for Mike McDonald. What he has and Nick Eamon Wori. Is just incredible. And as he continues to heal from that ankle surgery, he's only going to get more freakish. I think it took us a little bit longer or to realize how much they had to replace Boy Mafe, Tariq Wollen, and Kobe Bryant. But the defense has started to figure out their identity without those three excellent starters who are now starting on other teams, barring the injury for Bryant. But still, this Seattle defense is special right now. Eamon Wari is even more special. It's incredible. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, there's a reason why in Hard Knocks they were both sitting down one on one while he's injured, not even on the field. like Mike McDonald knows who his dudes are and he knows he has a special talent and he's clearly a very, very smart kid too. Like he's Nathan Hawthorne: Mm-hmm. Jarod McInroy: genuinely a student of the game. pairing that with the talent the raw talent that he has is that's scary. So let's move on to go ahead, yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, I'd like to add I'd like to add a yeah, I just want to add an honorable mention. Joe Burrow. Five TDs in the second half, leading that Bengals offense. two hundred or not two hundred and twenty completions, twenty two completions on thirty attempts, two hundred and ninety two yards. That's a that's a great performance. That's a great per great performance. Joe, I liked it. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, very good. Very good. let's move on to brilliant or blunder, because I got a big blunder this week that I'm passionate about. and one of these days Nathan Hawthorne: Talk to me about it. Tell me tell me what's blundering you. Jarod McInroy: we'll find it we'll find a brilliant this really is supposed to be a split segment where you know one week maybe we come up with a brilliant, sometimes blunder, but we've been telling you about how bad the coaching has been in the NFL and it's really hard to find where this brilliance really is. on a weekly basis. So right now my blunder of the week is going to Dan Campbell. we might might as well call him moron of the week. Genuinely the shtick is old. it's over. Four minutes left in the game. Fourth and a full two yards on your own twenty three yard line, and you have the nerve to not only go for it, but just run the most basic stock run scheme, off guard running back dive to Jameer Gibbs. Not even try to you know, hide it and and make it seem like it might be something else, maybe emotion. Anything. It was just a standard stock. Give the ball to a guy that has already touched the ball at this point twenty nine times in the game. Twenty nine of fifty six plays was how many times he had touched that ball at that point in time. By the end of the game, he finished with thirty six touches on sixty six total offensive plays. Did you hear that? I'm gonna let that sink in for a minute. He touched the ball thirty Nathan Hawthorne: huh. Jarod McInroy: si that's both rushing and receiving. Thirty Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. Yep. Jarod McInroy: six touches of your sixty six. And this is what we're talking about with Jew Pat Singh, I'm gonna kinda harp on him for a minute, but If you're gonna be the walk-around guy, if you're gonna if that's gonna be your thing, you're gonna be the tough guy, the ballsy guy, whatever, you still have to have some piece of you that understands that you have to ignore the analytics. But even the analytics probably said that you should not be going for that in your own territory, especially with four minutes in a Thai football game. What are we doing? But back to Petsing for a minute, you're overusing Gips. We say it every single week and we'll continue to say it. This is not sustainable for a whole season. This is how you get your star player injured. and it's it's also how you create a a situation like this where you go for it, and everybody knows where the ball is going. That is why that also was not successful. Because nobody beat us anywhere else. Beat us anywhere else. Beat us with Laporta. beat us with Amon Raw. We don't care. We're not gonna let it be Diggs or Gibbs rather. And Yeah, genuinely a boneheaded mistake. You got bailed out by a strong defensive drive and a missed kick, which is very unlikely from that short of distance, and is what it is. Congrats. You you got away with it this time. Just Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. Jarod McInroy: this time. Nathan Hawthorne: A lot of empty yards for the Lions, and that's been the story for them this year. Over four hundred yards of offense and only twenty points to show for it. I I think that that that's a pretty bad look. You had it over a hundred yard rusher, over a hundred yard receiver, and that was the output against a a reeling against a reeling team. And again, that what a horrible decision to go for it. You're basically handing the Packers the game. Honestly, my blunder this week should have been Matt LaFleur, but I'm gonna go to his brother, Mike LaFleur, for his handling of the game against the Denver Broncos. Denver Broncos are a great defense. We all know that. When you get in the red zone against the Denver Broncos, you have to be able to score the football. When you get on the two-yard line, you have to go for it and you have to put the ball in. And better yet, call a timeout that you have so that you do not have a delay of game and push yourself back even further. That's just an incredible. lack of a sense of awareness from Mike LaFleur and his team. Not only that, you're throwing the ball forty eight times with Jacoby Brissett. What are we doing throwing the ball forty eight times? You're a Shanahan guy. You're supposed to be running the rock. You you had fifteen carries between Knight and Algier and this game wasn't out of control. You weren't automatically in a game script where you needed to throw the ball. You weren't lagging behind. In fact the game was tied for a good chunk of it and it wasn't until late in the third that things maybe started indicating you needed to run the ball. I just think it never made sense. You need to stop sitting there and treating McBride like a wide receiver and actually get him on the line of scrimmage and start running the football. I like that he has targets, but we're just playing fantasy football here. That's all we're doing with this with this Mike LaFleur offense. I thought it was gonna start to look better. Jeremiah Love's injured, but again, the way they are lacking focus and lacking attention on running the football is producing an offense that's just entirely too one dimensional. again, you're gonna have a situation like the Raiders where cool, Brock Bowers is getting catches and yards, but you're not actually producing anything. And this I'm talking about the Raiders a couple years ago. And so I I just think it was ridiculous. You're in a situation where you have an opportunity against a Denver offense that is struggling to put up points. And rather than putting pressure on them to score points by scoring your own touchdown, having a red zone target like Michael Wilson or Trey McBride, you opt to Not call the timeout, get bounced back five yards, and then kick the field goal and stay conservative. there's taking the points, and I'm an advocate for taking points. There's no such thing as expected points above average. There's only the points that are on the scoreboard. And you've got to go put points on the scoreboard if you want to be able to win games. so I just I just thought that was so conservative. So and then just the rest of the game script from there on out made no sense. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. And my sister and brother in law were at that game, so I'm gonna have to get his take on it live in action. But let me tell you, we we see a lot of really good coaches take that time out, even if they're not about to get a delay of game, because when you're in those situations, you have to have your best play to ensure you get points on the board. So you have to be in that mindset in general. If you go out, you don't see the look that you like. always be aware of the clock. Have a guy. I'm sure they have a clock guy. So I d I don't understand where everybody Nathan Hawthorne: They you have a guy in your ear. Yeah. Jarod McInroy: has a clock guy in your ear ready to go. so I I genuinely don't know how delay of games really still happen to this day. but not in those moments. You can't let it happen. And that again, it's just an operational thing. It's it's a problem up at the top. And and we'll give him grace. Mainly because, you know, he's new at this and he'll hopefully get better as time goes on, but you would still like to think that Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. Jarod McInroy: he's a little more prepared than. Nathan Hawthorne: Again, the LaFleur brothers just fumbling the bag this weekend. Okay, you let me let me dig in on Matt LaFleur here. You get gifted the ball at the twenty-four yard line. And you go run Jarod McInroy: No, we we gotta give a week off. We gotta give a week off, Doug. We can't do this every week. Nathan Hawthorne: to Josh Jacobs, check down over the middle to Josh Jacobs, and then your play on third and five, instead of thinking, okay, I've got two downs to get five yards with that fourth down, with on fourth down, yeah, I'm gonna run a A wheel route to Josh Jacobs. And not only am I gonna run the wheel route and throw it, but but but okay, here's it Jarod McInroy: Big fella should've caught that thing though, let's be honest. Nathan Hawthorne: sure, sure, maybe he should have caught that. But are we going to expect our running back who hasn't played all season is not in game shape, we've only given eleven carries to to catch an over the shoulder in the corner of the end zone football? No. Not in my lifetime, and I am I expecting that to be a Jarod McInroy: Probably not. He's not even in walk around shape. Nathan Hawthorne: cut and like And here's the deal, that was a great throw by Jordan Love. But if that ball is thrown to Matthew Golden or Christian Watson, probably still dropped. But you have a better chance of that ball being caught. So I just the the decision there to not think about, hey, we might have two downs. Like if he if he's going for it on fourth down, why don't you? Why aren't we thinking about making this a two down situation to get five yards? And then not only that, you get the first down, now you really choke out the game. Can't do it. And then you lose the game. Cause you missed the field goal. Jarod McInroy: I liked the field goal. You you got the the field goal's gotta be made. I know. You the field goal's gotta be made, but I like the y you gotta take the points. But nonetheless, nonetheless. Yeah, we Nathan Hawthorne: But but Detroit still went and scored though. Yeah, whatever. Jarod McInroy: could we could do Matt LaFleur every single week if we wanted to on this segment. But yeah, hey. That was a good good little week seven recap. Why don't you take us home? I'm gonna start with this. Hey, be on the lookout, guys. We got our week eight. look ahead video coming out here soon. Nathan's gonna be giving you his power rankings. We're gonna be going over matchups of the week, upsets of the week, which we hit this week. And we would have been two for two if Mike LaFleur knew how to actually run an offense. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, couple honorable mentions here real quick. Shout out to the Steelers. Shout out to the Vikings. things looking good. Things looking good. But that is gonna do it for week seven. this was KYP. Like Jared said, look out for those things that are coming down the pipeline. We're never gonna steer you wrong.
