- 0:00There are some lives that leave fingerprints on history, and then there are lives that
- 0:17shape the very words history remembers.
- 0:20For generations, people have opened a dictionary and seen the name Webster printed across the
- 0:26cover.
- 0:27Scholars used his spelling books.
- 0:29Students learned language through his writings.
- 0:32Nations were influenced by his ideas.
- 0:35Yet behind the scholar, behind the educator, stood a man fully persuaded that the greatest
- 0:41foundation for any life, any family, and any nation is the Word of God.
- 0:48This is Greg Dowdy, and on today's Traveler's Tales, we journey back to the life of a man
- 0:53who spent decades defining words, yet understood that the most important truths in life could
- 0:59never merely be defined.
- 1:02They had to be believed, obeyed, and lived.
- 1:06The Apostle Paul declared in 2 Timothy 1.12,
- 1:10For I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have
- 1:16committed unto him against that day.
- 1:19Those words became precious to Noah Webster near the end of his life.
- 1:24And when you study his story, you begin to understand why.
- 1:29Noah Webster was born on October 16, 1758 in West Hartford, Connecticut.
- 1:36He lived during a formative season in American history, a time of revolution, uncertainty,
- 1:43and national rebuilding.
- 1:46But Webster believed something that many in his generation were beginning to forget,
- 1:52that freedom without truth cannot survive.
- 1:56Most people remember Webster for his dictionary, but few realize the sacrifice behind it.
- 2:03For nearly four decades, he labored tirelessly to produce an American dictionary of the English
- 2:09language, 38 years of study, 38 years of research, 38 years devoted to words.
- 2:18Why?
- 2:19Because Webster believed language mattered.
- 2:23He believed truth mattered.
- 2:25He believed education mattered.
- 2:27But even deeper than that, he believed the Bible mattered most of all.
- 2:33Before he was known as an educator, he was a student of Scripture.
- 2:37Webster understood that if a generation loses its foundation in God's Word, it will eventually
- 2:43lose its moral compass, its convictions, and ultimately its freedoms.
- 2:50He once wrote,
- 2:51"...the Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children
- 2:57under a free government ought to be instructed."
- 3:01Think about that for a moment.
- 3:03In an age when many are trying to remove God from education, culture, public life, Webster
- 3:09believed the exact opposite.
- 3:12He understood that knowledge without God produces pride, but truth grounded in God produces
- 3:19wisdom.
- 3:21And there is a powerful spiritual lesson there for all of us.
- 3:25It is possible to educate the mind while starving the soul.
- 3:30A person may become skilled, successful, informed, accomplished, yet remain empty on the inside
- 3:39because only God can satisfy the deepest needs of the human heart.
- 3:45Webster warned young people against skepticism and unbelief.
- 3:49He wrote that many fall away simply because they never became thoroughly acquainted with
- 3:54Scripture.
- 3:55That observation is still painfully true today.
- 3:59We are living in a generation flooded with information, but starving for truth.
- 4:07People know headlines, trends, statistics, opinions, yet many know very little of the
- 4:13Word of God, and the neglect of Scripture always produces spiritual weakness.
- 4:20Webster also recognized something else that our modern world desperately needs to hear.
- 4:26The root problem of society is sin.
- 4:30Not politics, not economics, not education alone, sin.
- 4:35He boldly declared that the miseries of mankind—crime, injustice, oppression, and war—flow from
- 4:42the neglecting of the precepts of the Bible.
- 4:45What remarkable clarity!
- 4:48Our world spends enormous energy treating symptoms while ignoring the disease.
- 4:54But Webster understood that only Christ can transform the human heart.
- 4:59Laws may restrain behavior for a time, but only the gospel of Jesus Christ can change
- 5:06a soul.
- 5:07And perhaps that is why the words of 2 Timothy 1.12 meant so much to him.
- 5:13Paul did not say, I know what I have believed.
- 5:16He said, I know whom I have believed.
- 5:20Christianity is not simply confidence in principles.
- 5:24It is confidence in a person—the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 5:29Noah Webster spent his life studying words, but in the end, his confidence was not in
- 5:34vocabulary, scholarship, or accomplishment.
- 5:38His confidence rested in Christ alone.
- 5:42What a reminder for us.
- 5:44At the end of life, titles will not matter.
- 5:48Achievements will not matter.
- 5:50Possessions will not matter.
- 5:54What will matter is this.
- 5:56Have we committed our lives to the One who is able to keep us?
- 6:01Paul said, I am persuaded that He is able.
- 6:05That is the language of settled confidence.
- 6:09Webster understood that true peace is found only when a heart is surrendered to God.
- 6:15He wrote this, The soul of man is, I am persuaded, never tranquil till the will is subdued and
- 6:23has yielded with implicit submission to God's sovereign grace.
- 6:28How true that is.
- 6:30So many people today are searching for peace while resisting the God who gives peace.
- 6:37They pursue fulfillment through success, pleasure, wealth, relationships, or recognition, only
- 6:43to discover that nothing in this world can quiet the unrest of the human soul.
- 6:49Why?
- 6:51Because we were created for God, and the heart will never rest until it rests in Him.
- 6:59And perhaps the greatest application from Webster's life is this.
- 7:03The most influential lives are built upon eternal truth.
- 7:08Webster influenced schools, government, education, and language because he first anchored his
- 7:14life in Scripture.
- 7:16His public impact flowed from private conviction.
- 7:21And the same is true for us.
- 7:23If we want to impact our families, our churches, our communities, and our generation, it will
- 7:29not happen through personality or talent alone.
- 7:33It will happen when we become people of the book, people who know God, believe His Word,
- 7:39and submit our lives to His truth.
- 7:41The world does not need more educated people.
- 7:44The world needs more godly people.
- 7:47As Noah Webster neared the end of his earthly journey, his hope was not in all he had accomplished.
- 7:54His hope rested in the Savior he had trusted.
- 7:57And today, generations later, his testimony still challenges us.
- 8:03Build your life on the Word of God.
- 8:05Submit your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 8:09Commit your future to the One who is able to keep that which you entrust to Him.
- 8:14Because the safest place for your life, your soul, your family, your eternity, is in the
- 8:21hands of Christ.
