- 0:01The idea that one can receive guidance in response to a
- 0:04question or aspiration 1 is holding within oneself from a
- 0:09randomly chosen page of a book is not based on some idea of
- 0:13magic, but is grounded in an understanding of the unity of
- 0:17consciousness and the interactive nature of
- 0:20consciousness in action. Shirley MacLaine, in her book
- 0:24and film of the same name, Out on a Limb, described an
- 0:28experience she felt was extraordinary.
- 0:31She entered a bookshop with questions about the meaning of
- 0:34her life, the significance of relationships she was forming,
- 0:39and the possibility of past lives impacting the present.
- 0:44These questions were very active in her being.
- 0:47As she started browsing the shelves, a particular book
- 0:50literally fell off of a higher shelf and landed in her hands.
- 0:55It was a book that responded to the question she had.
- 0:59Mysterious, no doubt, but it illustrates this interactive
- 1:04nature of the entire manifestation with a deeply felt
- 1:08aspiration. The answers are provided.
- 1:11Sometimes it comes through a book, sometimes through a
- 1:15serendipitous meeting with a person, or a particular event or
- 1:20experience that occurs, whether you call it a response to a
- 1:24prayer or a matter of synchronicity, or a tuning of
- 1:29the individual consciousness to the universal consciousness.
- 1:34There is no doubt, based on the experience of vast numbers of
- 1:38people throughout the world and spanning virtually every
- 1:42spiritual tradition, that such guidance is available to the
- 1:46sincere seeker who concentrates his aspiration.
- 1:51For this process to work, not only the seeker's consciousness
- 1:55must be focused and concentrated, but he must be
- 1:58applying to a book that carries the force that can provide such
- 2:03answers. Great spiritual texts are thus
- 2:06more readily able to guide as they are created with the force
- 2:10of the wider, higher consciousness, and thus are more
- 2:14easily accessed and themselves focused on the issues raised by
- 2:19sincere seekers. The Mother provides a clue that
- 2:23using texts with aphorisms tends to work better simply because
- 2:27the answer is much more clear and easily assimilated than if
- 2:32one tries to ferret out the sense from a long passage in a
- 2:36much more dense text. Many have found that using Sri
- 2:40Aurobindo's epic poem Savitri, a legend and a symbol, in this way
- 2:46seems to be particularly beneficial, as it is a
- 2:49storehouse of spiritual energy in a very concentrated form.
- 2:55The Mother notes quote. There is always a way of reading
- 2:59and understanding what one reads which gives an answer to what
- 3:03you want. It is not just a chance or an
- 3:06amusement, nor is it a kind of diversion.
- 3:10You may do it just like that and then nothing at all happens to
- 3:15you. You have no reply and it is not
- 3:18interesting. But if you do it seriously, if
- 3:22seriously, your aspiration tries to concentrate on this
- 3:26instrument. It is like a battery, isn't it,
- 3:30which contains energies. If it tries to come into contact
- 3:34with the energy which is there and insists on having the answer
- 3:39to what it wants to know, well, naturally the energy is there.
- 3:44The union of the two forces, the force given out by you and that
- 3:49accumulated in the book will guide your hand and your paper
- 3:53knife, or whatever you have. It will guide you exactly to the
- 3:57thing that expresses what you ought to know.
- 4:00Obviously, if one does it without sincerity or conviction,
- 4:05nothing at all happens. If it is done sincerely, 1 gets
- 4:10an answer. Certain books are like this,
- 4:14more powerfully charged than others.
- 4:17There are others where the result is less clear, but
- 4:20generally books containing aphorisms and short sentences,
- 4:25not very long philosophical explanations, but rather things
- 4:29in a condensed and precise form. It is with these that one
- 4:33succeeds best. Naturally, the value of the
- 4:38answer depends on the value of the spiritual force contained in
- 4:41the book. If you take a novel, it will
- 4:44tell you nothing at all but stupidities.
- 4:47But if you take a book containing a condensation of
- 4:51forces of knowledge or spiritual force or teaching power, you
- 4:57will receive your answer. End Quote Reference Sri
