- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's Thursday, it's the 12th
- 0:16of March. Good to have your company.
- 0:18I hope you're going well, whether you are just bustling
- 0:21with energy at the start of the day or whether you are bleary
- 0:24eyed rubbing sleep out of the corners of your eyes or at the
- 0:28end of the day, you're all done no matter where you are.
- 0:30What's going on? Hey, it's great to have your
- 0:33company. You might be all alone or you
- 0:35might be gathered around with your family.
- 0:37It is so cool that we get to do this together.
- 0:40And when I say this, the thing that we do together is we are
- 0:45able to read this incredible word inspired by the God of
- 0:50creation as a message to us so that we can learn more about
- 0:55him. And haven't we learnt more about
- 0:56him this week? We have seen God's absolute
- 0:59holiness and his intolerance of the worship of other gods.
- 1:03And then we've seen this incredible compassion as God has
- 1:08wrestled with needing to allow the consequences of Israel's
- 1:12behaviour to hurt them when he wants the absolute opposite to
- 1:17bless and to love. Ah, so that is the journey we
- 1:20continue on today as we hear God wrestling with his love and
- 1:24compassion for these errant people who continue to do the
- 1:28wrong thing. Holy Spirit, open up our hearts
- 1:33so that we can learn more about you and your character as we
- 1:38read this today. All right friends, let us read
- 1:42together Hosea chapter 12. The people of Israel feed on the
- 1:57wind. They chase after the east wind
- 2:00all day long. They pile up lies and violence.
- 2:05They're making an alliance with Assyria while sending olive oil
- 2:09to buy support from Egypt. How the Lord is bringing charges
- 2:14against Judah. He is about to punish Jacob for
- 2:17all his deceitful ways and pay him back for all he has done.
- 2:23Even in the womb, Jacob struggled with his brother.
- 2:26When he became a man, he even fought with God.
- 2:30Yes, he wrestled with the Angel and won.
- 2:33He wept and pleaded for a blessing from him.
- 2:37There at Bethel, he met God face to face and God spoke to him.
- 2:42The Lord God of heaven's armies. The Lord is his name.
- 2:48So now come back to your God, act with love and justice, and
- 2:54always depend on him. But no, the people are like
- 2:59crafty merchants selling from dishonest scales.
- 3:03They love to cheat. Israel boasts I am rich, I have
- 3:08made a fortune all by myself. No one has caught me cheating.
- 3:12My record is spotless. But I am the Lord your God, who
- 3:18rescued you from slavery in Egypt, and I will make you live
- 3:23in tents again, as you do each year at the festival of
- 3:27shelters. I sent my prophets to warn you
- 3:31with many visions and parables. But the people of Gilead are
- 3:36worthless because of their idol worship, and in Gilgal too, they
- 3:42sacrifice bulls. Their altars are lined up like
- 3:46the heaps of stone along the edges of a ploughed field.
- 3:51Jacob fled to the land of Aram, and there he earned a wife by
- 3:55tending sheep. Then by prophet the Lord brought
- 4:00Jacob's descendants out of Egypt, and by that prophet they
- 4:04were protected. But the people of Israel have
- 4:08bitterly provoked the Lord, so their Lord will now sentence
- 4:12them to death in payment for their sins.
- 4:25Our Lord, in this reading we hear how You are present in
- 4:29every step of the journey along the way.
- 4:33And Lord, we know that's true for our lives as well.
- 4:35We know that each time we turn a corner, there You are, ready to
- 4:40take that next part of the journey with us.
- 4:43Every time we celebrate a victory, there You are whooping
- 4:46and cheering along with us. When we find ourselves in a dark
- 4:51valley of sadness or loss or grief, there you are,
- 4:55heartbroken, standing beside us. You are a God who travels
- 5:02intimately with us through the ups and the downs of our daily
- 5:06lives. And how that could possibly be.
- 5:10That the God of the universe would be present here with each
- 5:14one of us in our own personal journeys.
- 5:17It blows our minds, but we are so grateful because we know that
- 5:23that is the truth. That is the reality of our
- 5:25experience. And so, Lord Jesus, eternal God
- 5:32and mighty Creator and loving Saviour, we see you, we
- 5:39acknowledge your presence, and we worship you, and we praise
- 5:44you, and we thank You, and we bow down in reverence, and we
- 5:49clutch and hold onto you for dear life.
- 5:53Our beautiful Saviour, You are the best and we love you so
- 5:58much. And we pray all of this in the
- 6:00saving name of Jesus, Amen.
