- 0:06SPEAKER_03: Pod.
- 0:09SPEAKER_03: Welcome back, Pod, to another episode of Say Who Say Pod.
- 0:14SPEAKER_03: He's Danny O'Neill in his sports coat.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: I'm Christian Caple.
- 0:19SPEAKER_03: The Washington Huskies are 1-0 after a 24-10 win in the Apple Cup, and nobody's happy about it.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, nobody's happy about it, but the game was better than the...
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: I thought it was going to be a real marketing coup for us, Christian.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: I thought the say who,
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: say what chant coming onto the field before the game was going to put our podcast on
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: the map.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: And I came away from it wondering if they're, are they going to workshop it?
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Are they going to troubleshoot it?
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Is it going to get better with time?
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Because the initial attempt,
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: it was a lot like when Mariner fans try to do a three-syllable chant like Ichiro,
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Ichiro, and it just never quite clicks.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's a lot more syllables than that, though.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: I think that was part of the problem.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: And the biggest problem was I didn't hear anybody saying pod.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: So, you know, maybe find a way to incorporate that in the future.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: Call on a grassroots movement.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Say who, say pod.
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: I'm being somewhat facetious.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: There's more than zero people happy about Washington's 24-10 win.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: There were some things to like, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: What did you think overall, seeing these Washington Huskies for the first time?
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: There were a lot of things on defense that I liked a lot.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: And I thought that the game...
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: For a game where you're plus in turnover margin, Washington had an awful lot of mistakes.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: And they came at pretty critical times.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: It was a game where if you change five plays and ask Washington
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: to do what it's supposed to do, the game is a lot more lopsided than they cover.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: And I think everybody feels better about it.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: That's not to sort of try to gloss over the warts that were there,
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: because there were some,
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: especially on offense,
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: but This was not only not in the category of the Montana game.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: It wasn't in the category of that Eastern Washington game that was the shootout
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: with Vernon Adams.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: This was more closer than you would like, but it was a solid victory.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: This wasn't a by the skin of your teeth sort of thing.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think you can always go back and do the whole like,
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: well, if they've done this, this, and this, then the score is different.
- 2:50SPEAKER_03: But when it's literally as simple as make a 29-yard field goal and gain one yard
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: and it's 20 to nothing at halftime.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: And let's throw in the not miss the wide open or neglect to see
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: the wide open Rashid Williams in the first half on a play
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: that was really well drawn up and he was wide open.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: He was in the end zone.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: It was one of the first times that it occurred to me where I was like,
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: do I have to worry about DeMond Williams being able to see over the line?
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: So many years covering Russell Wilson where that was and wasn't an issue in trying
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: to determine when it happened.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: That's where I initially went because that's exactly where he should have been looking.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: The play worked exactly how you dream it would.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: And he threw the ball late.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he just didn't.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it's because he was hesitant.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: Did he hesitate?
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: Did he...
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: Not see it as being as wide open as it was, or did he not just flat out not see it right away?
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: Now doing the whole,
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: both teams are going to be able to identify plays that could have swung this thing,
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: right?
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: Wazoo missed the field goal that its kicker typically doesn't miss in the second half.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, the first one in the first half was from 50 plus.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: It was ambitious.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, didn't quite get there.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: And yeah, gave him credit for making a goal line stand, right?
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: I think back to the Ohio State game last year and,
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: the folks who were really like gung-ho about, man, like, look,
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: a couple,
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: if that penalty doesn't happen or you don't give up the touchdown to Jeremiah Smith,
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: on the all-out blitz at the end of the first half and,
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: or maybe in the third quarter.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: But it's like, well,
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: yeah, Ohio State would say they should have scored on the goal line too, right?
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: Ohio State would say they should have gotten that first down where,
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: you know, UW made a great play to stop them.
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: And so you give credit to Washington State also.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: I'm feeling good about my defense if I'm the Cougs.
- 4:44SPEAKER_03: I thought that was a very physical performance by them, especially up front.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, they gave Washington's offensive line all they could handle.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Washington did not run the ball well, and Washington really was pushed back.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Some of the errors they made were because they were trying to level up
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: to Washington State's level of physical play.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: I firmly believe that.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: I thought Washington State played really well.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: And if I'm a Coug fan,
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: there's a lot to be pretty happy about,
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: including that quarterback looks really good.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: He was creative.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: He looks really tough.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: I thought they played really well.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: There was no point that I thought Washington... Well,
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: when they gave up the touchdown was the first point where I'm like,
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: they might lose this game.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: And I never really felt like, okay, they're going to lose.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: But I also,
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: as someone who's like, hey,
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: I think this team can win 10 games and make it into the college football playoff.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: I feel less confident of that today than I did when they kicked off the season.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Like that...
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Having a hard time running the ball,
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: having to rely on Daman Williams as much as they did,
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: and he played great in the fourth quarter.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: He did not play as well earlier on,
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: and he was the main part of their running game,
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: which now is going to be even at more of a disadvantage given the injuries.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: You're never at a disadvantage at Chuck Olson, Kia, and Shoreline.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: Never.

- 6:23SPEAKER_03: When you do, ask for our friend Henry Olson.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: When you talk to Henry, tell him Say Who Say Pod sent you.

- 6:53SPEAKER_03: You can do that at GoHuskyMobile.com.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: Thanks again to Husky Mobile for supporting today's show.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: I got some feedback from a listener that the FastPass lane,
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: the Husky Mobile FastPass lane was the way to go getting into Sunday's game with
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: as rough as the entry process was.
- 7:09SPEAKER_03: So, you know, maybe consider switching your number over, getting that FastPass lane.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: That's exactly right.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: It's important to,
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: as someone who is a veteran of navigating lines,
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: when you can get into a faster line, always get into the faster line.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: Always do it.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: It's always worth it.
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: That's good advice.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: Sound advice.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: Somebody asked me recently,
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: and it's a good question about, hey,
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: do you revisit any confidence that you might have had preseason
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: about Washington hitting the over of seven and a half?
- 7:40SPEAKER_03: Or fulfilling my particular preseason projection of 9-3 based on the opener.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: And they have a lot to clean up.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: And some of the stuff on the O-line is TBD.
- 7:53SPEAKER_03: To me, I think there are explanations for some of it as well.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: But you do need to see them play better to...
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: Return, I guess, to the confidence level you might have had in that group in particular.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Any amendment of preseason expectation for me centers more on
- 8:11SPEAKER_03: the running back injury situation than anything else at this point.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: If Jaden Lamar and Quade Carr come out of that game healthy and
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: the result is exactly the same, Um,
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: I don't know that by itself a two touchdown win in a season opening rivalry game
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: where you're,
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: you're playing a bunch of new starters
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: and you don't really know exactly what it's going to look like.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: You're going against a pretty seasoned defensive coordinator.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: Granted, I did think they would, you know, I think I picked him to win by 21.
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: So, you know,
- 8:41SPEAKER_03: I was maybe a touchdown, uh,
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: too optimistic on,
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: on Washington's side there, but, um, Brian Bonner and Trey Cooley, come on down.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: It's really all on them in the backfield now.
- 8:53SPEAKER_03: Not just them, but, you know, those are the next two guys up.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Quaid Carr looked like he suffered an injury when he kind of caught himself falling backwards.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: I assume that's what it
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: was, yeah.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: It's kind of where it looked like,
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: and it sounded like Jed didn't say specifically when you asked him,
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: but he pretty much said it was hand.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: That it was hand for Quade Carr and elbow for Jaden Lamar,
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: and everybody saw Jaden Lamar's, and that looked rugged.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: Like, when you got up,
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: when he got up,
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: After kind of the stiff arm and then powered back,
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: it was very clear he was in a lot of pain.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: So the fact that they're both going to be out now and Jed really didn't give a timetable.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: It was the,
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: we'll find out a timetable in the future,
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: but we're not going to be without him sometime.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: It's a huge blow.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: I always get torn when you talk about running back productivity in college, though,
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: because I do think offensive line is as much a part of a Yeah,
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, I do think the starting point is...
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: It doesn't matter who's back there.
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: It's not going to look good if the offensive line doesn't play better.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: The flip side is we've all seen running backs in college be able to compensate.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: Like when you've got an exceptional running back, the mistakes that they're capable of erasing.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: That in college,
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: I do think a specific running back is more capable of creating things on his own
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: or overcoming a deficit up front than it is in the NFL.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: The other place my mind goes is, I mean, you saw Jaden Lamar take on some blitzers.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: Dude, he looked so tough.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: That was the one thing.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: He looks exactly what you want in your number two running back in college football.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Is really physical, really strong, and kind of just this bow up, ugly yards, blitz protector.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: He looked really good.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I thought he ran the ball okay, too.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: A nice little leap there to get himself in the end zone on the touchdown.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: He hit the hurdle button twice, I think.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: But one of the real benefits to a fourth-year player who's seen the action
- 11:30SPEAKER_03: that he has, who's, you know, yeah, he's built well, right?
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: He's a sturdy dude.
- 11:35SPEAKER_03: He's got huge arms.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: He's strong.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: You can rely on him on third downs and in passing situations to protect the passer.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: And now, you know, Trey Cooley is also a veteran.
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: Trey Cooley has also played some college football.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: It's been a while since he's played consistently.
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: He missed all of last season with a knee injury at Troy.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: I think he only played two games the year before at Georgia Tech because of
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: a pretty bad concussion he got early in the season.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: So, you know, it's been since the 2023 season.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: That he really had multiple games where he could get in a rhythm and feel things a little bit.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: Jed Fish gave him credit for getting around to chip the defensive end
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: after he Flicked the flea back to Daman Williams.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: And so that's somebody who has been in enough games where he,
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: at least you would assume,
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: understands pass protection and the mentality you have to have.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: And so I would guess you'd probably see him out there as their third down back.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: And some of those responsibilities they were counting on Jaden Lamar to have,
- 12:34SPEAKER_03: my assumption would be that's who you'll see.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: But as far as the carries and...
- 12:38SPEAKER_03: You know, who are you relying on to really set the tone in the running game?
- 12:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, is Trey Cooley somebody you're comfortable having double digit carries?
- 12:46SPEAKER_03: Do you want to see what Brian Bonner can do?
- 12:49SPEAKER_03: You know, a recruit that people were very excited about.
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: I think we did the...
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: The Brian Bonner film watch, the Danny O'Neill Brian Bonner film watch.
- 12:57SPEAKER_03: When he committed, it was that big of a deal, right?
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: Top 100 tailback out of California.
- 13:03SPEAKER_03: They beat UCLA for him.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: He was a 10, 500 meter guy in high school.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: He can really, really run.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: He was super productive.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: Caught the ball well out of the backfield too.
- 13:13SPEAKER_03: And yet, on a team that is very young with a coaching staff that is...
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: Less hesitant than probably anybody out there to play a true freshman that came
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: into their season opener, you know, liking three other guys more, right?
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: Wanting to get three other guys carries first.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: So going to be a little baptism by fire for Brian Bonner.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: If there is a silver lining, though,
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: it's that, hey,
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: this recruit that people were very,
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: very excited about,
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: who a lot of people really wanted,
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: that was a pretty big victory in this 2026 class,
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: you do at least get to see him early on.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Jed was also doing his best of saying,
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: hey, he got the most action out of anybody between spring and summer.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: He did.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: My reaction upon hearing that,
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: and this is not to sort of poo-poo or diminish him in any way,
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: was if in those opportunities he didn't shoot to the top of the depth chart,
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: that tells you that they thought he needed a little more seasoning.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: That's what it tells me is that he got a lot of opportunities
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: because they are very excited about him and they're like,
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: well, not quite ready for primetime yet.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: And now he is going to get those opportunities.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: That being said, I am firmly on the side of bet on young talent every time.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: Live with the mistakes.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: So the...
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: I'm probably not as concerned about running back.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: If they had lost their top two running backs last year in the first game,
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: I would have been more concerned about it because of how clearly...
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: I thought that Jonah Coleman and Adam Mohamed were cut tears above what they have.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: This year, it's a little more unknown.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: And maybe it will be.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: Maybe it will be that this is a huge drop-off.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: I also think they might have a group of guys who are none of them.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: We're not really sure which of them are going to stand out or pan out long-term.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: And while they went with the guys that they thought were best,
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure how much of a downgrade Brian Ballner ultimately will be.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and that was sort of how Jed Fish tried to explain it a little bit on Monday,
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: that like, well, look, Quade Carr had basically not played college football, right?
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: All of six snaps or whatever last season, and what do you have, six carries in the game Sunday?
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: So, you know,
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: really hadn't played much more college football than Brian Bonner,
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: although had spent,
- 15:47SPEAKER_03: you know, the better part of the last, what, Steve McLaughlin, Ph.D.:
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: On the Bonner thing,
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: him getting all the reps in practice,
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: they didn't have Jaden Lamar or Trey Cooley at all in the spring.
- 16:05SPEAKER_03: And so there were a lot of opportunities there for guys
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: who weren't necessarily going to be in the rotation this year.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: And even come training camp,
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: you could tell they were careful with the way they brought Cooley back.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: You could tell they were careful with the way they brought Jaden Lamar back.
- 16:19SPEAKER_03: I was wondering, coming into the season, I knew he'd play.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: But I thought, where's he at with the ankle injury?
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: Where's he at with recovery?
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: Because he was in a boot the day after the mock game, even.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: And it wasn't...
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: Recovery from those things isn't always linear, right?
- 16:36SPEAKER_03: Sometimes you push them, then you back off, you push them, and then you back off.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: So it was hard to know, is this exactly the plan?
- 16:42SPEAKER_03: Is this going exactly the way that they thought the rehab would go?
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: Or is this based on kind of how he feels?
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: But he was sitting out of some practices not too long before the season.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: Again, maybe just plan.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: I was sort of wondering, hey, how's he going to look with that?
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: And I thought pretty well.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: But even once it was just Quade Carr out,
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: I kind of thought, man,
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: is Jaden Lamar at a position physically where he can take
- 17:09SPEAKER_03: on number one tailback duties, where he can play 40-plus snaps?
- 17:12SPEAKER_03: Like, is that something that they were planning on asking him to do or, like,
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: okay asking him to do just with where he kind of is coming off the ankle surgery?
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: So it was already a thin room.
- 17:25SPEAKER_03: And...
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: Aside from losing your starting quarterback or something just crazy unforeseen,
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: losing your top two running backs on this specific roster,
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: just with where their strengths and weaknesses are,
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: where their depth is and isn't,
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: losing tailback number one and tailback number two is just
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: about worst-case scenario stuff when it comes to a week one injury report.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: Here is Jed Fish.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: This is from Monday's press conference talking about kind of the options
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: that they have at running back now.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: It is what it is.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: We've got seven.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: So we, you know,
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: I'm glad that,
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: we made a decision to bring in Trey Cooley because we thought that You know,
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: you always have to be aware of the running back room.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: First time in six years that I've had these type of two pretty significant injuries
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: in the same room.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: Can't think of that happening very often, but it does happen sometimes.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: And that's why,
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: I'm really glad that Brian is here and Brian has had a great spring and fall.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Excited to see if Julian McMahon can continue to step up.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Excited to see what Ansu can do.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Excited to see what Ryken will do.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Excited to see what all these guys can do.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: Probably should note Ansu Sano too.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: A guy who I thought...
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: Was one of the pleasant surprises in spring with the way he ran the ball.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: They list him at 6 foot and 240 pounds.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: He trucks some starting defenders on this team.
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: So I wonder if that's someone who you maybe try to set the tone with physically
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: a little bit, give the defense a little bit of a different look.
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: But again, also not somebody you're planning to get into the opener.
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: So you're going to be relying on some guys they weren't necessarily...
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: Thinking we're going to play big roles for them this year.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: They're also talking about moving Cade Eldridge,
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: who's like the number three tight end, lending Christian background.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: So maybe they could go with some heavy,
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: like get two 6'4", 6'5",
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: 250-pound running backs and just really give it a heavy look for fourth
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: and one situations at the end of the first half.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, Kate Eldridge scored a rushing touchdown last year as a fullback.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: And we've seen that look throughout training camp.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: Is he someone you put back there with DeMond on obvious passing situations?
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: Thunder and lightning, baby!
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Thunder and lightning!
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: You're kind of giving away the game a little bit if you have a designated pass blocker.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: That's the other thing, too.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: It's not like Jaden Lamar was going to be the only tailback asked to pass protect.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: If you're playing tailback, you're going to be asked to do that.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: That's the question you would have about anything.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: What do we make of DeMond's game?
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: His fourth quarter is awesome.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: The scramble he has on third and nine, where, I mean, it's really, it's him and three defenders.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: And he beats all three.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: He gets all three running toward the sideline and cuts it back.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: It's about as quick and sharp a cut as you can make in the game of football.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: He has a couple of great throws.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: His completion percentage came out really good.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: Stat line looked good.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: What did you make of how he played?
- 21:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I just think the jury's still out.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: You know,
- 21:35SPEAKER_03: obviously,
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: you don't want ever to get to a point where,
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: like, you're taking for granted the sort of things he can do with his legs.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, the play on third and nine is, like, if you're Wazoo, you just throw your hands up.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: Like, what do you even do?
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: You know, that was, like, against most quarterbacks in the country, like, that's a win.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: You're getting off the field there.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: And so the fact he can manufacture that and create that,
- 21:59SPEAKER_03: and then instantly,
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: was it the next play,
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: I think, where he hits the go ball to Lawson, who just made a phenomenal catch.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: That catch was wild.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, he was essentially one arm was pinned, and he caught it with one arm falling down.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: It was pretty insane.
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: A little surprised there was no pass interference there.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: But, yeah, I...
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: If you're if you were hoping to see like a new and improved version
- 22:27SPEAKER_03: of DeMond Williams in the season opener that made you think, yes,
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: like this guy's definitely going to have it against the elite defenses
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: on their schedule this year.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: Like you didn't see that, you know, and again, it's it's.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: For all of the concerns, you do have to give credit where it's due.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: He had a great fourth quarter.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: He did make the plays when they needed to be made.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: You mentioned, hey,
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: Washington State scores,
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: and it's 10-7,
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: and it feels like They've got all the momentum in the world,
- 22:59SPEAKER_03: and Washington's offense has been inept, really, in a lot of ways.
- 23:03SPEAKER_03: I doubt you were the only one who got that familiar feeling of like,
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: oh my God, are they going to lose this game?
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: And then boom, boom, boom, touchdown.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: Just started throwing downfield.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: Right back to a 10-point lead, put the pressure right back on Washington State.
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: And so the ability to respond in a clutch moment,
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: even if it is in a game that a lot of people would say, well,
- 23:22SPEAKER_03: if there's anyone you can do that against, it's this part of the schedule, right?
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: I would also submit, you know, they beat them 59-24 in Pullman last year.
- 23:31SPEAKER_03: They scored on every possession.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: That wound up a very tough Washington State defense.
- 23:37SPEAKER_03: They did not have another game like that, anywhere close to like that.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: This might be a pretty good defense.
- 23:45SPEAKER_03: Could be.
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: You might look back at the end of the season and say, well, who were among the tougher defenses?
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: Statistically, look at what Washington State did.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: Now...
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's the thing about season openers, right?
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: Like, you just don't know.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: I do think there were more instances than you would typically assume after
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: a performance where you say, like, Washington really didn't get it down offensively.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: There were more instances of, like, wow, that was some solid defense by Washington State.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: They appear very well coached.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: And DeMond didn't panic and turn the ball over.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Like, there were...
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Their offense didn't look good for,
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: I would say, three quarters of the game or looked really spotty.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: But he also didn't get impatient and start really forcing things either,
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: which is a very positive sign.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: In terms of learning and growing from it, I was very amused by this.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: I get into...
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: I've been calling him Petty Jetty.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: When Jed gets the little digs in,
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: just like a little,
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: little tiny dig,
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: there was, as he was talking about, what he took away from the first game.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: I really enjoyed the subtle jab he landed at the end.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: I felt like there was a lot out there that we can learn from.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: So our team will certainly learn from them, but it's nice to learn with a win.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: And it's nice to learn with the Apple Cup And for the first time in the history of
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: the series, this game was played week one.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: We all saw college football around this whole weekend.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of learning experiences.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: And this is what happens for the very first time when you don't have preseason,
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: and these penalties matter and these games have a different type of feel to it.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you have to work into these games in front of half a crowd.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: We worked into ours in front of a sold-out one.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: So there is some anxiety out there when you're starting for true freshmen in those scenarios.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: It's hard when you got a full house and pressure, Christian.
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: It is the flip side of Sunday, exclusive TV window.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: You know, look, you're a true freshman playing for the first time in front of a huge crowd.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: Like, that's nerves enough.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: But when you also know, like, I mean, I mean,
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: Coleman Brusa swats it.
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Ramzak gets some penetration and Coleman Brusa loops around,
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: gets pressure, deflects it, and Jaron Jones intercepts the pass.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: That is the, that's the flip side of, and it's like a closing thought on Demond Williams.
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: You know,
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: the miss to Rashid Williams on the third and 33,
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: there were a couple other misses too,
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: but like that's the one you kind of circle and go back to,
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 27:01SPEAKER_03: against a,
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: And really against Washington State's defense also,
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: but like against a Big Ten defense, like you might get one of those a game.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: You know,
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: you might get against a really top 25 team,
- 27:11SPEAKER_03: certainly,
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: you might get one of those a game where it's like,
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: boom, that's easy money touchdown.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: And if you don't capitalize like that, that could be your shot.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: When everything works how you dream it's going to work, you have to collect that.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: It is free money.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: Because it doesn't ever really happen like that.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: You have to be.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: When it works like it's supposed to, you've got to cash it every time.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: And I think also,
- 27:44SPEAKER_03: before we talk a little more about the defense,
- 27:46SPEAKER_03: which, you know, got to be fair and balanced here.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: There were some very, very good things to talk about.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: I think that's what was most frustrating about the fourth and goal play,
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: was that, like, that should have been a touchdown.
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: You know,
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: if you're Jed Fish looking at it,
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: and I'm sure on review,
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: and Michael Switzer,
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: the offensive line coach who we got a chance to talk to on Tuesday,
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: kind of broke it down and Just said like, hey,
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: frontside guard misses an assignment and backside tackle and guard don't climb to
- 28:19SPEAKER_03: the second level physically enough.
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: And, you know, he felt like they had it manned up there.
- 28:26SPEAKER_03: They had, you know, they should have had hat on hat.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: And, you know, we talked a little before, right?
- 28:31SPEAKER_03: Like even in a situation where you feel like you've got hat on hat,
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: You don't even really need to block it flawlessly to get a yard, right?
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: To open up a huge running lane and get like an explosive run in the open field, sure.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: But, you know, it doesn't even need to be perfect to get a yard at the goal line.
- 28:49SPEAKER_03: And, you know, give 98 on Wazoo credit, you know, awesome play to get penetration.
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: But I think they probably watched that back and thought,
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: you know, Like what Jed Fish said at half time, like you can't score there.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: Like, what are you doing?
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: You know, so.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: Palpable disgust was how it described Jed Fish's reaction to
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: that play.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: Palpable disgust.
- 29:13SPEAKER_03: A miss in the passing game,
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: a miss in the running game that they feel like should have been points.
- 29:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: The defense was what you thought it was, I think.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: And there's some bad in that.
- 29:27SPEAKER_03: It's a very minor portion.
- 29:29SPEAKER_03: It's almost all good.
- 29:30SPEAKER_03: The bad is 45 yards and penalties by Ryland Dillard Allen alone.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: Jacob Manu, a veteran, extending a drive with a dead ball, taunting foul, which...
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: I think Jed Fish was particularly not pleased with.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: Something you could joke about after because you won the game,
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: but in the moment was just like, senior captain, like, really?
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: You're doing this?
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that also, that's kind of a point of emphasis, it seems like, for officials this year.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: You can't stand over the guy.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: You can't stand over the dude.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: But yeah, you're right.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, that drive you had, there were two times where Washington was going to be off the field.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: Two times where they were going to be off the field,
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: and then they weren't because of very unnecessary personal fouls.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: Ranzak Fruin,
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: I want to give him the benefit of the doubt because I don't think he really tried
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: to level the quarterback and it looked like Pinnock was ready to fall down as soon
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: as he got touched.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: That said, that was really dumb.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: You can't run into him.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: Even if you're not lowering your shoulder, he was standing on the sideline.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: God, that was brutal.
- 30:39SPEAKER_03: He did it right in front of Ryan Walters, too.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: So you could see, like, the camera captured Walters' reaction probably the whole time.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: You could just see he's just like, oh, no, what are you doing?
- 30:51SPEAKER_03: It's the ones on the sideline that I'm sure are most aggravating for coaches
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: because, like, you had nothing to gain.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: You had no advantage to gain.
- 30:59SPEAKER_03: You're just trying to get a hit in on the quarterback,
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: which maybe there is something to gain there, right?
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: Like, you remind the guy throughout the game,
- 31:04SPEAKER_03: and he Every time we get a chance to put you on the ground,
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: we're going to do it type of thing.
- 31:09SPEAKER_03: But he had conceded.
- 31:11SPEAKER_03: He was out.
- 31:11SPEAKER_03: He was off the field.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: The play was over.
- 31:13SPEAKER_03: You knew it was ending.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: He was nowhere near the sticks.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: That's one that... And Walters talked about this on Tuesday as well, where he's just like...
- 31:25SPEAKER_03: Will it continue?
- 31:25SPEAKER_03: It can't continue.
- 31:28SPEAKER_03: If it continues, these guys won't play.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: It seemed pretty clear because it looked like they pulled Fruin out for at least
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: a series after the penalty.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: And Rylan Dillard-Allen, the targeting...
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: Targeting is less of an issue, I think.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: I thought it was targeting, how it's called, but I don't really understand targeting.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: I also, there's especially in,
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: there's certain targeting fouls where I'm like,
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: if that's going to be a penalty, you just have to take it.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: I didn't think, he didn't launch at him or anything.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: He was bracing and making a tackle.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: And yeah, you don't want him to lower his head.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: And It was clear the quarterback was running out of bounds.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: Like, it was clear.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: Rylan Dillard Allen had also run a long way.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, on the late hit?
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: On the late hit.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: He'd also run an awful long way, and the quarterback was steering out of bounds.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: Like, I guess maybe it's just my affection for hard-hitting safeties.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: I'm...
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: Rylan Dillard-Allen's two penalties weren't as troublesome to me as the Manu
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: and Fruin penalties.
- 32:47SPEAKER_03: Fair enough.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: Fair enough.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the targeting, like, it's bang-bang.
- 32:53SPEAKER_03: You know, maybe one crew calls it this way, one crew calls it another way.
- 32:56SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't...
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: That's not one that you put in the category of,
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: like, oh, Rylan Dillard-Allen needs to do a better job finding the line.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: He...
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: You don't want him to lower his head.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: You don't want him to lower his head.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: But that's a tackling technique thing as opposed to other penalties
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: where you see really launching and really extending it,
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: trying to hit the guy with the crown of the helmet.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: I didn't think that was the case here.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: He was bracing for a collision.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's definitely the coaching point, right?
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: It's not like,
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: let's not spend any time analyzing and trying
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: to figure out should this have been called or not?
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: Like, what can you do in the future?
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: Like, get your head out of there, right?
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: Leave your, leave your head out of it.
- 33:38SPEAKER_03: I know, you know, Jimmy Lake used to talk like with Jojo McIntosh.
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: Where he'd say, like, I hope they call it every time.
- 33:45SPEAKER_03: They should call it.
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: Because,
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: you're lucky to get targeting called instead of,
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: you know, having to load you onto a stretcher.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: And take you off the field.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Like, they're doing this for you.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: It's not just for the protection of the people you hit, you know.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: I heard,
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: I think it was on his coach's show,
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: Jed Fish sort of talking in similar terms about, like,
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: he said,
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: you know, look,
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: we tell Rylan,
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: Dillard Allen,
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: and, you know, all the players that we want you to play for a long time.
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: And it's not just about, like, don't get kicked out of the game.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: It's not just about, you know, play clean and don't try to hurt anybody.
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: But, you know, the rule's there to protect your health, too.
- 34:24SPEAKER_03: So...
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: When Fish was talking about this,
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: I thought this might have been the quote that I was most interested in from
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: the Tuesday press conference.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: No, wait.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: Was it Monday?
- 34:36SPEAKER_03: It was Monday, yeah.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: Short week.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: All screwed up this week.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: They played on Sunday.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: It was a holiday on Monday.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: He was talking about sort of the basically learning on the job and the youth that this team has.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: I think we have to also just keep in mind, you know, this is a very young team.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: And to play in the Apple Cup week one in front of a sold out group when you're 17, 18, 19.
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: We're not like some of these other teams that are having 22 and 23 and 24 year olds
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: on their roster.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: So we're going to live with mistakes that some of these other teams might not have to live with.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: I think we're going to live with some penalties that other teams might not have to live with.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: We're going to live with an edginess.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: Because that's what happens when you're 17, 18, 19, and you're being thrown into the war zone.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: But what we can't live with is we don't want to commit some penalties that we know we can avoid.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: When I first heard that, My reaction was it's kind of like wanting your cake and eating it too.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: Like we've got all this young talent, but I don't want to put too much pressure on him.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: And as I thought about it, I was like, no, I think that is really true.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: I think one of the reasons that Washington in part has landed the caliber
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: of recruits it has is because it's offering an immediate path to playing at
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: a prominent Big Ten program.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: Like that's one of the things that has gotten them some of the players that it's gotten.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: The trade-off for that is Is that you are going to have to live with some learning on the job.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: And I think that is always worth it.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: Because as players gain experience and build confidence,
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: I do think that some of those, their judgment becomes bad.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: So when I first heard it,
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: I really thought it was trying to talk your way out of the fact that these guys
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: that you think so much of have to perform.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: And when I thought about it, was, no, I think that is true.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: And I think in general for the offensive line as well.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: Expect this group to grow and get better.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: What you see in week one is not the finished product.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: And you may actually see a much bigger change because of how many young players that
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: a true freshman,
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: what they play like now and what they look like in November,
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: you might see a radical shift or elevation in the level that they perform at.
- 37:06SPEAKER_03: And I think it's more...
- 37:08SPEAKER_03: It's more nuanced too than, oh,
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: we got a bunch of young players and sometimes they're just going to be bad
- 37:14SPEAKER_03: and we got to live with them being bad because they don't live
- 37:18SPEAKER_03: with them playing poorly or not executing their assignments.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: Darren Hatchett played the entire second half at right guard, right?
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: There was a reason for that.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: I think there was a planned rotation there,
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: but there were some plays not being made, there were some penalties, and so...
- 37:34SPEAKER_03: They went with somebody else.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: Cody Green probably also doesn't love the way he played,
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: but I think they also noted his positive reps, his good plays.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Similar to quarterback, it's a true freshman starting at left tackle.
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: You can't just yank that guy out if he loses some reps.
- 37:53SPEAKER_03: You've got to let him grow and play through.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: But I think too about...
- 38:01SPEAKER_03: Hey, there's a bunch of young guys and they're going to make mistakes.
- 38:05SPEAKER_03: Ramzak Fruin made some unbelievable plays in this game.
- 38:11SPEAKER_03: It was the whole thing of,
- 38:15SPEAKER_03: are you really seeing what you're seeing at spring practice and training camp?
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: Is this guy really going to be that good once the lights come on?
- 38:22SPEAKER_03: And he didn't win every rep, right?
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: He had some welcome to college football moments too,
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: but he forces a fumble out of Like sheer hustle on the Rylan Dillard Allen targeting
- 38:33SPEAKER_03: that otherwise would have been a huge play.
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: Gets his arm on a Caden Pinnock pass.
- 38:39SPEAKER_03: He's involved in the backfield on a couple other pass plays.
- 38:42SPEAKER_03: He's got a,
- 38:43SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: I forget if he had a TFL or if maybe it was just like a one yard run where he gets
- 38:47SPEAKER_03: in there and pulls the running back back.
- 38:50SPEAKER_03: And you saw from him exactly what you were kind of expecting based on practice,
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: but also got pushed around a little bit.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: Commits a bad penalty.
- 39:01SPEAKER_03: And so those are that's some of the give and take, right?
- 39:03SPEAKER_03: It's not like, oh, yeah,
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: like these guys are young and they're just going to have games
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: where they get dominated.
- 39:09SPEAKER_03: You know, maybe that day comes.
- 39:10SPEAKER_03: Who knows?
- 39:11SPEAKER_03: It's like, hey,
- 39:12SPEAKER_03: alongside the awesome plays that these young guys make that prove why they're on
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: the field,
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: like the negatives are going to show up in probably a pretty big way at times
- 39:22SPEAKER_03: as well.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: The for Ramzak Fruin, I think the biggest shift that I saw in the game was that first run.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: I hesitate to say like, oh, it was completely because you never know what a guy's asked.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: It sure looked like he chased the running back and gave up the weak side and let
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: the quarterback out the back end.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: And it absolutely makes sense to me why
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: the Washington State offensive coordinator would say, hey,
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: on this first one,
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: let's see if we can catch him leaning,
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: get him to chase where he thinks the ball is going,
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: and that frees our quarterback up.
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: When you saw how he played.
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: That sort of read option later in the game,
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: including that tackle that you're pointing out where he grabbed the running back
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: from behind,
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: absolutely squared up,
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: did it the way you're supposed to and not over-pursuing,
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: kind of allowing yourself the chance where if the quarterback still does have
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: the ball, you're not giving up the edge.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I thought Ramczak, I was impressed with how he played overall.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: That Derek Coleman Russo was what you hoped he'd be, too.
- 40:23SPEAKER_03: Very disruptive.
- 40:25SPEAKER_03: He's got a TFL, almost TKO'd the center judge after it as well, which was funny.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: Jed Fish had a pretty funny reaction to that, too, when he was asked about it on Monday.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: He's like, yeah, that would have been a tough one.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: I don't know what the rule is on that.
- 40:43SPEAKER_03: If you deck the center judge in celebration accidentally.
- 40:48SPEAKER_03: Obviously, the deflection on the turnover and...
- 40:53SPEAKER_03: You saw it all show up.
- 40:55SPEAKER_03: And, you know, there's so much emphasis on the young guys.
- 40:57SPEAKER_03: But, I mean,
- 40:58SPEAKER_03: Jacob Manu was exactly kind of what you saw throughout spring and what we saw
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: of him.
- 41:07SPEAKER_03: Absolute beast.
- 41:08SPEAKER_03: Looked fully healthy.
- 41:09SPEAKER_03: Alex McLaughlin making plays as you would expect.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: The Manu's Blitz where he got the sack was one of my favorite because if you look at
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: the replay,
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: he basically just turns his body to make it look like he's going to run out toward
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: the flat.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: Coffeehouse, right?
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: And then just pivots back in and then just makes a beeline for the quarterback.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: And it was exactly like the guy that was assigned to block him was told to read,
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: if he's going to bail, then you've got to look for someone else.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: It wasn't even a head fake.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: He just turned his body, then pivoted, and then right to the quarterback.
- 41:48SPEAKER_03: Russell Davis got a sack on like literally his first play since the UCLA game 2024
- 41:55SPEAKER_03: where he had three sacks on a forced and recovered fumble.
- 41:59SPEAKER_03: So that guy's per snap havoc rate as a Washington Husky is about as high
- 42:06SPEAKER_03: as it could possibly be.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: It's just a matter of keeping him healthy and building him up and being able
- 42:10SPEAKER_03: to maximize his reps and everything.
- 42:11SPEAKER_03: But I think that's a big plus to get him involved in the pass rush right away in week one.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: Is that an advanced metric per snap havoc rate?
- 42:22SPEAKER_03: Havoc rate is.
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: I don't know that anyone's...
- 42:26SPEAKER_03: I guess it wouldn't be that hard, right?
- 42:27SPEAKER_03: All you got to do is import PFF data.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: Havoc rate.
- 42:32SPEAKER_03: No, Havoc rate is.
- 42:33SPEAKER_03: Havoc rate is.
- 42:34SPEAKER_03: This was the... Are you serious?
- 42:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:38SPEAKER_03: I forget if it's sacks, TFLs, and turnovers.
- 42:43SPEAKER_03: But yeah, they're basically the rate at which you create negative plays for the offense.
- 42:50SPEAKER_03: Havoc.
- 42:51SPEAKER_01: Havoc rate.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: I was unfamiliar with the Havoc rate.
- 42:55SPEAKER_03: Their Havoc rate was 28% in this game.
- 42:57SPEAKER_03: That's a 98th percentile.
- 42:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:00SPEAKER_03: It's a defense, man.
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: They looked good.
- 43:03SPEAKER_03: Dylan Robinson was not targeted in coverage.
- 43:06SPEAKER_03: No, they stayed away from him.
- 43:07SPEAKER_03: I thought Emmanuel Carnley involved around the ball, right, with two pass breakups.
- 43:15SPEAKER_03: Both of them pretty impressive.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: Sean Clark looked good as a returner.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: He fielded one kick he should not have fielded,
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: and it looked like he heard about that right away.
- 43:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, do you think?
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, seemed like he got some immediate guidance on what he should do in the future.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: I thought he looked good.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: When Ryland Dillard Allen was thrown out,
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: it looked like they went to a nickel because you saw both John Jones
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: and Rashawn Clark in the game.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: Could you tell who was playing safety?
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: I think they moved Clark back to free safety.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: He might have been
- 43:49SPEAKER_03: doing some safety stuff earlier today.
- 43:51SPEAKER_03: In the game too.
- 43:51SPEAKER_03: Like again,
- 43:52SPEAKER_03: it's not just going to be as straightforward with Ryan Walters as,
- 43:55SPEAKER_03: you know, five guys are out there and these are their distinct positions.
- 43:58SPEAKER_03: Like they're going to,
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: they have the,
- 44:01SPEAKER_03: these are the best five or the best six and let's figure out how to,
- 44:04SPEAKER_03: I've had some people suggest like,
- 44:06SPEAKER_03: Hey, could Rashawn Clark play some running back, you know?
- 44:11SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 44:12SPEAKER_03: Guy's got ball skills and he's shifty.
- 44:14SPEAKER_03: He's got vision.
- 44:16SPEAKER_03: You know, he's handling both.
- 44:17SPEAKER_03: You don't see a lot of guys return kicks and punts anymore.
- 44:21SPEAKER_01: No, because it's a different skill set.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: The punt returner really is a test of quickness where you're going to have
- 44:30SPEAKER_01: to make one guy miss in a tight space.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: And a kickoff returner is much more a test of...
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: In some ways,
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: kind of courage because you're going to get up to a high end speed and
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: the possibility of massive collision.
- 44:44SPEAKER_01: I know in the NFL, like Golden Tate was a great punt returner, wanted no part of kickoff return.
- 44:49SPEAKER_01: And Percy Harvin,
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: one of the best kickoff returners in the NFL the past 25 years,
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: wanted no part of punts.
- 44:55SPEAKER_01: Like they generally are different skill sets.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: So it's pretty impressive that he's doing both.
- 45:02SPEAKER_03: I'm embarrassed that we're 46 minutes into this podcast
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: without having discussed this,
- 45:05SPEAKER_03: but I'm glad you mentioned the Seahawks because it provides a nice segue.
- 45:11SPEAKER_03: When you watch the Seahawks and they stall out offensively,
- 45:15SPEAKER_03: if you're a Seahawks fan, that's a bummer, right?
- 45:19SPEAKER_03: But it also means that Michael Dixon takes the field.
- 45:24SPEAKER_03: And, hey, look at this.
- 45:26SPEAKER_03: Hey, well, yeah, I'd rather still have the ball, but now let's watch this.
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: Look at what this guy can do.
- 45:32SPEAKER_03: I think the Washington Huskies might have a guy like that in Hunter Green.
- 45:36SPEAKER_01: Sure looks like it.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: It sure looks like it.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: The punter is...
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: The kicker is an exceptionally important position that everybody knows of its importance.
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: And you don't really want to talk about it all that much because there's not that much to add.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: If it's going good, you don't want to jinx it.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: If it's going bad, you want it to start going better.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: The punter is someone whose performance, it's kind of a bummer when they come onto the field.
- 46:03SPEAKER_01: However, huge weapon in terms of field position.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: And Hunter Green, he looks really good.
- 46:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, taught some folks a rule also.
- 46:15SPEAKER_03: I can't say I immediately knew that a punt return muffed into the end zone was ruled
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: a touchback, but obviously that was...
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I didn't know what that was either.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: When it happened,
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: because I was watching it here with my friend Blair,
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: and I didn't know what the rule was.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: I didn't realize that.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: And actually, it kind of seems wrong to me that it's a touchback.
- 46:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's...
- 46:40SPEAKER_03: Because he fair caught it, right?
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: He signaled for the fair catch, he muffs it, and then he gets the touchback.
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: I guess you would say, well,
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: there's a chance that the coverage team recovers it for a touchdown,
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: so that's the penalty that you get for muffing it.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: But it kind of seems to me that you get a little bit of a reward for failing to make
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: the fair catch where you indicated you were going to make the fair catch.
- 47:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I have seen some people say like,
- 47:07SPEAKER_03: well, why wouldn't every returner just do that instead of catching it?
- 47:10SPEAKER_03: And it's like, well, you are...
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: You're taking a pretty big risk there.
- 47:14SPEAKER_03: Like it would take it would take a pretty coordinated effort to like pull
- 47:18SPEAKER_03: that off intentionally and would not be the reward would not be worth the risk.
- 47:22SPEAKER_03: I don't think having a punter with a leg like
- 47:25SPEAKER_03: that basically means like there's nowhere on the field you can be stopped
- 47:29SPEAKER_03: where you're not still confident you can flip the field and which sounds, you know.
- 47:35SPEAKER_03: An obvious point, I know, but not a privilege that every college football program enjoys.
- 47:42SPEAKER_03: And so when you have someone who can reliably kick it 65 yards,
- 47:46SPEAKER_03: 60 to 65 yards,
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: when they're really airing it out,
- 47:50SPEAKER_03: you get stopped on your own 20-yard line,
- 47:53SPEAKER_03: you know, you're forcing a Returner to catch it at their own 20.
- 47:58SPEAKER_03: And if you cover well, you can still come out with decent field position for your defense there.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: And like Jed Fish said, he kind of credited Hunter Green for both of those muffed punts.
- 48:10SPEAKER_03: When it's that high and also when you're forcing the returner to turn and retreat
- 48:15SPEAKER_03: to catch the ball, it all adds up.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: As someone who has experienced less than optimal punters during my time as
- 48:25SPEAKER_01: a Washington Husky fan,
- 48:26SPEAKER_01: I'm really excited about having what appears to be a very, very good punter.
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: And then, you know, Tyler Robles hits a 48-yarder.
- 48:36SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 48:37SPEAKER_03: Which I think you feel good about, that being his very first kick.
- 48:39SPEAKER_03: And then yanked a, what, 29-yarder that you could tell he just couldn't believe he missed that.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: Would not expect him to miss a lot from inside of 30 going forward.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: He's also got some steez, man.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: I like Mustache Kicker.
- 48:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah?
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like Mustache Kicker.
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: Stache is making a comeback in general in popularity?
- 49:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like having Mustache Kicker.
- 49:03SPEAKER_03: I saw Grady Gross joined a lawsuit in Arizona seeking an injunction,
- 49:09SPEAKER_03: a state-level injunction, to play this year.
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: Both him and Taitai Uyunglele were at the game just wearing their jersey but
- 49:19SPEAKER_03: in street clothes, not suited up.
- 49:21SPEAKER_03: So everything's still TBD there.
- 49:25SPEAKER_01: Nobody's threatened to throw Washington out of the conference, though.
- 49:29SPEAKER_03: Not yet, no.
- 49:29SPEAKER_03: How about that?
- 49:31SPEAKER_03: Expel them.
- 49:33SPEAKER_03: Seems like that's over or close to over.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: Seems like LSU blinked.
- 49:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like they set their roster and didn't.
- 49:39SPEAKER_03: That's the thing.
- 49:39SPEAKER_03: They were going to expel them.
- 49:40SPEAKER_03: They never did the thing, you know?
- 49:43SPEAKER_03: Like they never actually added those guys.
- 49:45SPEAKER_03: No.
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: I think that was,
- 49:48SPEAKER_01: I think that was,
- 49:49SPEAKER_01: reading between the lines,
- 49:50SPEAKER_01: I think what happened was the SEC told them Before the first game,
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: if you add them to the roster, we're going to move to Bucu.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: And then everybody piped down,
- 50:03SPEAKER_01: except for Lane,
- 50:05SPEAKER_01: and Lane made the comment at halftime in the interview with Holly Rowe,
- 50:09SPEAKER_01: where he's like, could you imagine if we had pro players?
- 50:13SPEAKER_01: And I think the SEC was then like,
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: all right, we're going to move forward to make it clear we can kick you out.
- 50:20SPEAKER_01: Um, if you do it and then LSU set because last weekend they didn't add them to
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: the roster, but they left two spots and now, now the roster is filled.
- 50:28SPEAKER_01: Like those guys aren't going to play.
- 50:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, shout out to Andy Yamashita from the Seattle Times for ranking Western Michigan.
- 50:37SPEAKER_03: One of the brave few.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:39SPEAKER_03: They only got 12.
- 50:39SPEAKER_03: This is what I don't understand.
- 50:41SPEAKER_03: Michigan fell out of the top 25.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: After winning that game officially.
- 50:48SPEAKER_03: Western Michigan got only 12 points in the poll.
- 50:54SPEAKER_03: Week one, neither of these teams have played.
- 50:57SPEAKER_03: One of them was ranked 16th nationally.
- 51:01SPEAKER_03: Played in a way that caused voters to believe they no longer belonged in the top 25.
- 51:10SPEAKER_03: The team that they played against, also playing its first game of the season.
- 51:15SPEAKER_03: This is the only data we have.
- 51:18SPEAKER_03: Only got 12 points in the poll.
- 51:19SPEAKER_03: I don't get it.
- 51:23SPEAKER_01: I think you're asking logic to intercede in an inherently biased project.
- 51:29SPEAKER_03: What's Ian got for us?
- 51:31SPEAKER_01: Well, Ian's got two tickets that he's asking us to give away.
- 51:34SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 51:37SPEAKER_01: This was, and shout out to Ian, this was first Husky game he was watching without his dad.
- 51:45SPEAKER_01: And I think it hit him in his heart a little bit.
- 51:49SPEAKER_01: And as someone who's lost both my parents, I can definitely appreciate and feel for that.
- 51:56SPEAKER_01: But Ian had some tickets for this weekend's game,
- 51:59SPEAKER_01: and he wanted two of them to go to a Say Who Say Pod listener, who...
- 52:08SPEAKER_01: Would parent and child go into the game?
- 52:10SPEAKER_01: Looking to go to the Utah State game, but a parent and child pairing.
- 52:15SPEAKER_01: How do you want to give them away?
- 52:16SPEAKER_01: Do you want to have them email, first person to email one of us?
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: What do you think is the best way to do?
- 52:21SPEAKER_03: As I understand it, pretty good seats, too.
- 52:25SPEAKER_03: I think 50-yard line, forget exactly where.
- 52:29SPEAKER_01: I think they might even be covered.
- 52:31SPEAKER_01: I don't know what the weather forecast is, but I think they might be undercover.
- 52:35SPEAKER_01: So if it happened to be wet, you're not going to get wet.
- 52:39SPEAKER_01: Solid, solid seats.
- 52:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 52:41SPEAKER_01: Should we just do the first person to email me?
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: Wanting a parent and child combo,
- 52:46SPEAKER_01: my email is Danny, D-A-N-N-Y, at Danny O'Neill, D-A-N-N-Y, O-N-E-I-L.com.
- 52:55SPEAKER_01: Include a little story that we can pass along to Ian.
- 52:58SPEAKER_01: I know he's looking to kind of share the...
- 53:03SPEAKER_01: Bond that he had with his dad over Husky football, hoping to encourage that in another family.
- 53:08SPEAKER_01: And here is our weekly conversation with IP McFarland.
- 53:12SPEAKER_02: Good morning, guys.
- 53:14SPEAKER_02: My audio has been absolute garbage lately,
- 53:17SPEAKER_02: so I'm trying to do it in a soundproof booth to see if that improves it.
- 53:26SPEAKER_02: New season, new experiences.
- 53:31SPEAKER_02: Let's start with the game day.
- 53:35SPEAKER_02: Was great a setting on the sidelines last year?
- 53:37SPEAKER_02: I think it was.
- 53:40SPEAKER_02: But if the booster that is forcing this down our throats is listening, would you just call me?
- 53:46SPEAKER_02: And we'll just have a conversation as two adults who are both clearly passionate
- 53:52SPEAKER_02: about the University of Washington's football team.
- 53:56SPEAKER_02: Because
- 53:59SPEAKER_02: that attitude of worrying about the setting It perpetuates what is reality,
- 54:06SPEAKER_02: which is it's not a very good environment anymore.
- 54:11SPEAKER_02: Pre-game,
- 54:12SPEAKER_02: when they were doing that absurd training on say who,
- 54:15SPEAKER_02: I was one of maybe two people in my section who were looking
- 54:20SPEAKER_02: at it cross-eyed saying, these ain't the words and this isn't working.
- 54:27SPEAKER_02: They keep trying to make fetch happen.
- 54:30SPEAKER_02: There was no longing by the fan base to do the Say Who chant, except for by a handful of us.
- 54:38SPEAKER_02: And the way that it was rolled out was, it was just ham-fisted and strange.
- 54:46SPEAKER_02: It didn't feel like something that there was longing for.
- 54:52SPEAKER_02: The only way these traditions work is when they start organically with the students,
- 54:56SPEAKER_02: and then you can blow them out to the rest of the stadium.
- 55:00SPEAKER_02: Ideally that happens organically,
- 55:01SPEAKER_02: but if you want to force it a little bit,
- 55:03SPEAKER_02: that's fine,
- 55:03SPEAKER_02: but it's got to start with the students and it's got to be something people want
- 55:06SPEAKER_02: to do.
- 55:08SPEAKER_02: This wasn't one of them.
- 55:11SPEAKER_02: Onto my question.
- 55:14SPEAKER_02: Given the offensive performance,
- 55:18SPEAKER_02: which DeMond had the great move to juke three guys at a vital point in time.
- 55:23SPEAKER_02: It was an incredible play.
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: And Lawson had a fantastic game.
- 55:29SPEAKER_02: I'd love to see the stats on rushing.
- 55:31SPEAKER_02: I thought the right side of the offensive line was great.
- 55:36SPEAKER_02: Getting pushed, rushing the ball.
- 55:38SPEAKER_02: The left side was not.
- 55:39SPEAKER_02: And they just kept going left.
- 55:43SPEAKER_02: And now two running backs are down.
- 55:45SPEAKER_02: Have you adjusted your expectations for this team?
- 55:48SPEAKER_02: I think Christian and I were both at nine wins and Danny was at ten.
- 55:53SPEAKER_02: I think I have dropped it to eight.
- 55:57SPEAKER_02: The injuries piled up with The lack of offense to begin with, I'm a little concerned.
- 56:06SPEAKER_02: I wish you guys a good week.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: Go Dawgs.
- 56:09SPEAKER_01: That question of adjusted expectations is an interesting one,
- 56:12SPEAKER_01: because if you're asking about, like, what do I expect them to do?
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: Like, put my rational brain in place?
- 56:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: This impacted it.
- 56:22SPEAKER_01: Do I think they're going to be able to, with the schedule they have, win 10 games?
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: Yes, this impacted.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: I don't think they're, I wouldn't say they're likely to win 10 games right now.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: It doesn't change my expectations or my hope or what I think this team could do.
- 56:39SPEAKER_01: What I want them to do.
- 56:41SPEAKER_01: Like, I still think that idea of like, yeah, you won the game and you're 1-0.
- 56:48SPEAKER_01: You now have two games that you really should win.
- 56:51SPEAKER_01: And then the conference season will start.
- 56:55SPEAKER_01: I don't feel like I'm in a,
- 57:00SPEAKER_01: that it shifts what I want to happen, if that makes sense.
- 57:05SPEAKER_01: So logically, yes.
- 57:07SPEAKER_01: In terms of emotion, no, not at all.
- 57:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I guess we touched on this a little bit earlier.
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: If I back off nine and three at all, it's really just because of the running back health.
- 57:19SPEAKER_03: And it's probably more fair to say like,
- 57:22SPEAKER_03: well, let's see a couple games of a Trey Cooley, Brian Bonner.
- 57:28SPEAKER_03: Onsu Sano, whoever else, rotation.
- 57:31SPEAKER_03: How does it break down?
- 57:33SPEAKER_03: Who's good at what?
- 57:34SPEAKER_03: How lacking are they going to be in areas that they wouldn't have been as lacking
- 57:38SPEAKER_03: with Quaid Carr and Jaden Lamar?
- 57:41SPEAKER_03: And then, you know, let's also wait to find out, like, how long is Jaden Lamar going to be out?
- 57:45SPEAKER_03: You know, like, Jed Fish was asked, are those guys out for the season?
- 57:47SPEAKER_03: And he said, I don't know yet.
- 57:51SPEAKER_03: Do we get a timeline for either?
- 57:53SPEAKER_03: I mean, if Quaid Carr had surgery, like,
- 57:54SPEAKER_03: I'd probably be in the camp of, like, let's not, you know, hold your breath on...
- 57:58SPEAKER_03: You know, just if he comes back, then it's gravy kind of thing.
- 58:02SPEAKER_03: I really, you know, really have no clue, right?
- 58:05SPEAKER_03: Don't know what the exact injury is.
- 58:06SPEAKER_03: Don't know what the prognosis, the timeline.
- 58:08SPEAKER_03: So, you know, I would like to learn a little bit more.
- 58:11SPEAKER_03: Maybe we won't, but a little bit more about the timeline.
- 58:13SPEAKER_03: Maybe you can get one of those guys back in, you know, sooner than the other, whatever.
- 58:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:21SPEAKER_03: Having even one of them against certain opponents might make a difference.
- 58:26SPEAKER_03: But you're probably at that point getting more granular than you should with how,
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: again,
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: like how concerning the offensive line's lack of physicality was in
- 58:38SPEAKER_03: a season opening rivalry game.
- 58:39SPEAKER_03: And I think you need to see that addressed before you even really start to worry
- 58:43SPEAKER_03: about like, well, what can the running backs give you?
- 58:46SPEAKER_03: So I don't know.
- 58:48SPEAKER_03: I'm
- 58:50SPEAKER_03: I'm probably in the camp that I want to see some more football before I say
- 58:55SPEAKER_03: that whatever I thought about this team will be different or the same based
- 59:00SPEAKER_03: on four quarters.
- 59:05SPEAKER_03: In full agreement with anybody who thought the offense would be better,
- 59:10SPEAKER_03: especially that they'd be able to impose their will physically a little bit more
- 59:15SPEAKER_03: than they did up front.
- 59:17SPEAKER_03: I think that's aside from the running back health, which...
- 59:20SPEAKER_03: Is something you can't control.
- 59:21SPEAKER_03: I think that the offensive line performance was concern number one coming out of that game.
- 59:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's interesting.
- 59:29SPEAKER_01: As you're talking this through, I think you're 100% right.
- 59:32SPEAKER_01: The sort of the issues are two different issues, though.
- 59:36SPEAKER_01: Running back is about, OK,
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: how does this big unknown position where we didn't know much about any of
- 59:42SPEAKER_01: the running backs they had and now they've lost their two top guys,
- 59:46SPEAKER_01: which is terrible, right?
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: Like that's not doesn't make anybody better.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: It's a huge problem.
- 59:52SPEAKER_01: The second issue is.
- 59:54SPEAKER_01: The offensive line, it's a question of how much better they're going to get over the year.
- 59:59SPEAKER_01: Are you going to see improvement?
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: You should see improvement.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: You've got a true freshman at left tackle,
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: a true sophomore at left guard,
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: You didn't play your starting center in Landon Hatchett.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: And Chantalea Lea did not have...
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_01: He made too many mistakes in the first half and you ended up seeing him replaced.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_01: You should see improvement along that front.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: They do need to improve.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_01: I think you can say it's reasonable that that will happen.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_01: Will it improve enough for them to...
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_01: So I wouldn't change my prediction yet, I guess would be my
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_03: My answer to Ian.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_03: Now, they play Utah State on Saturday.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_03: Utah State lost to Idaho State.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_03: The Jaguars.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_03: So, a Pac-12 team.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_03: But a team that, you know, this game shouldn't be close.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_03: If you again struggle to run the ball, I mean,
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_03: even with your number three,
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_03: number four tailbacks,
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_03: if you can't move some guys up front in this game,
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_03: then you really start to,
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_03: I think, worry about, well, what does it look like going forward?
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_03: Weird to say you're going to have a get-right game after you beat your rival by two touchdowns.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_03: But if you believe Washington needs a get-right game,
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_03: like these weeks two and week three are sort of the opportunities, right?
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_03: Usually,
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_03: this and the next week would be the opponents you start with more so
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_03: than Washington State,
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_03: which looks like even in a transition year and New roster and everything.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_03: I think they got issues offensively, but they play hard and they look well coached.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_03: They were picked to finish fifth, I think, fourth or fifth in the new Pac-12.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_01: I would pick them to finish higher based on how I think that defense is.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_03: Well, there were polls that had,
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_03: the one poll I looked at, I think had Fresno State ahead of them.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_03: And watching both of their, again, one, four quarters of data for each.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_03: They played very different opponents.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_03: You know, maybe USC is really just that good.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_03: Like, I didn't see anything from Fresno State's offense,
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_03: at least, that made me like, and they just looked completely overwhelmed.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_01: As a longtime USC hater, Trojans looked really good.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_01: And I'm someone who tends to think that they're soft and overrated.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: They look really good, man.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_01: I think they gave up like 24 points to San Jose State, but that was all in the fourth quarter.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_01: That team looks freaking fast.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_01: Last question from me for you.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_01: Had you ever heard that there was a secret clock that is the official clock?
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_01: That was freaking hilarious, man.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_01: This stupid sport.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: It's just
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_03: like, God.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_03: One week, you know.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_03: Finally,
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_03: the game started and we got,
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_03: you're seeing all the stadiums around the country and crowds and you got football
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_03: and everyone's talking about LSU and the SEC and Michigan and Western Michigan and
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_03: the clock and the Big Ten and the Big Ten statement, Mac statement, SEC statement.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_03: Here's the lawsuit.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_03: Here's the injunction.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_03: LSU president said, Louisiana governor said,
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_03: Welcome back to college football.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's great.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I absolutely, I've absolutely enjoyed every second of it.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_01: More chaos, please.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_01: We'll talk to you next week.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_01: Peace.
