Unlocking Kitchen Design Secrets: Tips from a 30-Year Expert and Certified Kitchen Designer · Around the House with Eric G®: Home Improvement Remodeling & DIY

0:43
It's
0:44
around
0:44
the
0:44
house.
0:45
We've
0:45
been
0:45
talking
0:46
today
0:46
about
0:46
designing
0:47
a
0:47
kitchen
0:47
and
0:48
finishing
0:48
the
0:48
project.
0:49
We're
0:49
just
0:49
talking
0:50
about
0:50
hiring
0:50
a
0:50
designer
0:51
and
0:51
getting
0:51
this
0:51
project
0:52
off
0:52
on
0:52
the
0:53
right
0:53
foot.
0:53
Now,
0:54
the
0:54
next
0:54
part
0:54
here
0:55
is
0:55
super
0:55
important,
0:56
and
0:56
we
0:56
started
0:56
to
0:56
talk
0:56
about
0:57
this
0:57
a
0:57
little
0:57
bit.
0:57
Cabinetry.
0:58
And
0:58
let's
0:59
give
0:59
a
0:59
little
0:59
primer
1:00
on
1:00
cabinetry.
1:01
If
1:01
you
1:01
haven't
1:01
seen
1:02
cabinetry
1:02
out
1:02
there,
1:03
really
1:03
thought
1:03
about
1:04
it.
1:04
There's
1:04
three
1:05
different
1:05
styles
1:06
of
1:06
cabinets
1:06
that
1:06
you
1:06
see
1:07
out
1:07
there
1:07
in
1:08
the
1:08
United
1:08
States.
1:08
Typically
1:09
you
1:09
see
1:09
an
1:09
american
1:10
face
1:10
frame
1:10
where
1:10
you
1:11
have
1:11
this
1:11
one
1:11
by
1:12
two
1:12
face
1:12
frame
1:12
that
1:13
goes
1:13
around
1:13
the
1:13
cabinet
1:14
face
1:14
of
1:14
the
1:14
box.
1:15
And
1:15
of
1:15
course,
1:15
the
1:15
doors
1:16
overlay
1:16
that.
1:17
And
1:17
those
1:17
doors
1:18
are
1:18
gonna
1:18
be
1:18
called
1:18
either
1:19
a
1:19
full
1:19
overlay
1:19
where
1:19
there's
1:20
like
1:20
a
1:20
316
1:21
gap
1:21
around
1:22
the
1:22
house.

2:25
we
2:25
got
2:25
a
2:25
great
2:26
show
2:26
lined
2:26
up
2:26
for
2:26
you
2:26
today,
2:27
and
2:27
this
2:27
hour
2:27
we're
2:28
going
2:28
to
2:28
be
2:28
talking
2:28
about
2:28
my
2:29
tips
2:30
for
2:30
designing
2:30
a
2:31
kitchen
2:31
in
2:32
finishing
2:32
that
2:33
project.
2:34
Now,
2:34
a
2:34
little
2:34
bit
2:34
about
2:35
me,
2:35
my
2:35
background.
2:36
I
2:36
am
2:36
a
2:36
certified
2:36
kitchen
2:37
designer.
2:38
I
2:38
have
2:38
been
2:38
doing
2:39
this
2:39
for
2:40
about
2:40
30
2:41
years,
2:41
and
2:41
so
2:41
I
2:41
have
2:42
designed
2:42
thousands
2:43
of
2:43
kitchens
2:43
out
2:43
there.
2:44
And
2:44
this
2:45
really
2:45
can
2:45
help
2:46
you
2:46
as
2:46
a
2:46
homeowner
2:47
or
2:47
even
2:47
if
2:48
you're
2:48
thinking
2:48
about
2:48
doing
2:48
this
2:49
as
2:49
a
2:49
DIY
2:50
project,
2:51
I
2:51
can
2:51
sure
2:51
help
2:52
you
2:52
out
2:52
here
2:52
with
2:53
a
2:53
lot
2:53
of
2:53
tips
2:53
and
2:54
tricks
2:54
in
2:54
this
2:55
episode.
2:56
So
2:56
really,
2:57
no
2:57
matter
2:57
what
2:58
you
2:58
do
2:58
here,
2:59
the
2:59
first
2:59
thing
2:59
that
2:59
I
3:00
want
3:00
to
3:00
say
3:01
is
3:02
the
3:02
design
3:03
is
3:03
probably
3:04
the
3:04
most
3:04
important
3:05
step
3:06
out
3:06
of
3:06
this
3:06
process.
3:07
And
3:07
not
3:07
just
3:08
because
3:08
I'm
3:08
a
3:08
designer,
3:09
but
3:09
this
3:09
is
3:09
your
3:09
blueprint
3:10
for
3:11
the
3:11
entire
3:11
project.
3:12
This
3:13
is
3:13
all
3:13
the
3:14
planning
3:14
is
3:14
based
3:15
off
3:15
of
3:16
this
3:16
one
3:17
document.
3:18
And
3:18
so
3:19
my
3:19
first
3:20
advice
3:20
is
3:21
to
3:21
hire
3:21
a
3:22
good
3:22
kitchen
3:23
designer
3:24
for
3:24
this
3:24
project.
3:25
And
3:25
if,
3:25
I
3:25
don't
3:25
care
3:25
if
3:25
you're
3:26
a
3:26
homeowner,
3:26
if
3:27
you're
3:27
a
3:27
contractor,
3:28
what
3:28
else?
3:29
Here's
3:30
the
3:30
thing.
3:30
When
3:30
it
3:30
comes
3:31
to
3:31
kitchen
3:31
design,
3:32
specifically
3:33
for
3:33
tackling
3:33
that
3:34
kitchen
3:34
project,
3:35
when
3:35
I've
3:36
hired
3:36
hundreds
3:36
of
3:36
designers
3:37
over
3:37
my
3:37
years,
3:38
and
3:39
even
3:39
the
3:39
ones
3:39
coming
3:39
right
3:40
out
3:40
of
3:40
design
3:41
school,
3:41
it
3:41
takes
3:42
them
3:43
18
3:43
to
3:44
24
3:44
months
3:45
of
3:45
tackling
3:45
projects
3:46
to
3:47
be
3:47
really
3:47
good,
3:48
where
3:48
I
3:48
start
3:48
to
3:49
feel
3:49
like,
3:49
hey,
3:49
I
3:49
can
3:50
let
3:50
them
3:51
go
3:51
on
3:51
their
3:51
own
3:52
and
3:52
really
3:52
start
3:52
doing
3:53
it
3:53
without
3:53
having
3:53
to
3:54
micromanage
3:55
the
3:55
project,
3:56
because
3:56
there
3:57
are
3:57
thousands
3:58
of
3:58
things
3:59
that
3:59
can
3:59
go
3:59
wrong
3:59
in
4:00
the
4:00
planning
4:00
stages.
4:01
And
4:01
you
4:02
as
4:02
a
4:02
homeowner,
4:02
or
4:02
even
4:03
as
4:03
a
4:03
contractor,
4:04
unless
4:04
you've
4:04
been
4:05
doing
4:05
it
4:05
for
4:05
a
4:05
decade,
4:06
this
4:06
is
4:06
the
4:07
thing.
4:07
It
4:07
takes
4:08
forever
4:09
to
4:09
learn
4:09
all
4:09
those
4:10
things.
4:10
And
4:11
there
4:11
is
4:12
a
4:12
lot
4:12
of
4:12
trial
4:12
and
4:13
error
4:13
within
4:13
this.
4:13
And
4:13
it's
4:14
something,
4:14
you
4:14
can't
4:14
just
4:14
go
4:14
take
4:15
a
4:15
class
4:15
and
4:15
go,
4:15
I'm
4:15
a
4:16
kitchen
4:16
designer,
4:17
and
4:17
this
4:17
is
4:17
where
4:18
mistakes
4:18
happen.
4:19
And
4:20
when
4:20
you're
4:20
designing
4:20
a
4:21
kitchen,
4:21
mistakes
4:22
equal
4:23
time
4:24
and
4:24
they
4:24
equal
4:24
money.
4:25
And
4:26
this
4:26
is
4:26
where
4:27
the
4:27
mistakes
4:28
really
4:28
start
4:28
costing
4:29
on
4:29
the
4:29
project
4:29
side.
4:30
So
4:30
here's
4:30
what
4:31
happens
4:31
so
4:31
many
4:31
times.
4:32
And
4:33
I
4:33
see
4:33
this,
4:33
and
4:33
this
4:33
is
4:34
one
4:34
of
4:34
the
4:34
biggest
4:34
mistakes
4:34
that
4:35
I
4:35
see
4:35
of
4:35
people
4:35
going
4:36
into
4:36
the
4:36
home
4:36
centers.
4:37
They
4:37
will
4:38
set
4:38
their,
4:38
draw
4:39
up
4:39
their
4:39
kitchen.
4:40
Okay,
4:40
ive
4:40
got
4:40
an
4:40
18
4:41
inch
4:41
base
4:41
cabinet.
4:41
I
4:42
got
4:42
24
4:42
inch
4:42
base
4:43
cabinet.
4:43
I
4:43
got
4:43
a
4:43
36
4:44
inch
4:44
sink
4:44
cabinet,
4:45
24
4:46
inch
4:46
dishwasher.
4:47
And
4:47
they
4:48
go
4:48
into
4:48
the
4:48
home
4:48
improvement
4:49
store
4:49
and
4:49
say,
4:49
I
4:50
want
4:50
this.
4:51
They
4:51
figure
4:51
out
4:52
the
4:52
base
4:52
cabinets.
4:52
They
4:53
copy
4:53
exactly
4:55
what
4:55
they
4:55
had
4:55
in
4:55
there.
4:56
And,
4:57
you
4:57
know,
4:57
you
4:57
got
4:57
to
4:57
think
4:57
back
4:58
into
4:58
the
4:58
history
4:58
of
4:58
kitchens
4:59
here
4:59
a
4:59
little
4:59
bit.
5:00
Most
5:00
people
5:01
that
5:01
are
5:01
tackling
5:01
kitchen
5:01
remodels,
5:02
those
5:02
kitchens
5:03
can
5:03
be
5:03
1530,
5:04
40,
5:05
50
5:06
years
5:06
old.
5:06
I
5:06
was
5:06
in
5:06
a
5:06
cows
5:07
today
5:07
that
5:08
was
5:08
built
5:08
in
5:09
52,
5:09
and
5:10
it
5:10
had
5:10
the
5:10
1952
5:11
kitchen
5:12
still
5:12
in
5:12
it.
5:13
It
5:13
had
5:14
not
5:14
been
5:14
remodeled
5:15
yet.
5:15
And
5:16
so
5:16
when
5:16
you
5:16
look
5:16
at
5:17
these
5:17
kind
5:17
of
5:17
things,
5:18
you
5:18
realize,
5:19
what
5:19
was
5:19
it
5:20
like
5:20
in
5:21
1982?
5:23
You
5:23
had
5:23
maybe
5:24
a
5:24
microwave,
5:25
and
5:26
you
5:26
had
5:26
a
5:26
vent
5:26
hood.
5:27
You
5:27
had
5:27
a
5:27
range
5:27
top
5:27
or
5:28
a
5:28
range.
5:29
You
5:29
had
5:29
a
5:30
vent
5:30
hood,
5:30
you
5:30
had
5:30
a
5:30
dishwasher,
5:31
and
5:31
you
5:31
had
5:31
a
5:31
refrigerator.
5:32
That
5:32
was
5:32
pretty
5:32
much
5:32
what
5:32
you
5:33
had
5:34
in
5:34
storage.
5:35
Wasn't
5:36
really
5:36
as
5:36
a
5:36
big
5:36
a
5:37
thing.
5:37
We
5:37
didn't
5:38
have
5:38
stores
5:38
back
5:39
then
5:39
that
5:40
were
5:40
the
5:41
Williams
5:41
Sonoma,
5:42
the
5:42
Amazons,
5:43
the,
5:43
any
5:44
of
5:44
those
5:44
specialty
5:45
cookware
5:46
stores.
5:47
We
5:47
had
5:47
a
5:48
handful
5:48
of
5:48
pots
5:48
and
5:48
pans,
5:49
utensils
5:50
and
5:51
a
5:51
few,
5:51
you
5:52
know,
5:52
things
5:52
to
5:52
cook
5:52
with.
5:53
And
5:53
it
5:53
wasn't
5:53
that
5:53
big
5:54
a
5:54
deal.
5:54
And
5:55
today
5:55
we
5:55
have
5:56
a
5:56
brand
5:56
new
5:56
tool
5:56
for
5:57
everything.
5:57
So
5:58
our
5:58
storage
5:59
needs,
5:59
and
5:59
this
5:59
is
6:00
one
6:00
thing
6:00
you
6:00
have
6:00
to
6:00
think
6:00
about.
6:01
This
6:01
is
6:01
a
6:01
workspace.
6:02
And
6:03
the
6:03
tools
6:03
that
6:04
you
6:04
use
6:04
in
6:04
this
6:04
workspace
6:05
are
6:06
completely
6:06
different
6:07
than
6:07
they
6:08
were
6:08
in
6:08
even
6:08
1995.
6:10
So
6:10
you
6:10
have
6:11
to
6:11
think
6:11
about
6:11
how
6:11
am
6:12
I
6:12
going
6:12
to
6:12
store
6:12
all
6:13
these
6:13
little
6:13
tiny
6:13
things?
6:14
Back
6:14
then,
6:15
you
6:15
might
6:15
have
6:15
one
6:16
bank
6:16
of
6:16
drawers,
6:16
a
6:16
four
6:17
drawer
6:17
cabinet,
6:18
maybe
6:18
18
6:19
inches
6:19
wide,
6:19
and
6:19
the
6:19
rest
6:20
of
6:20
it
6:20
was
6:20
doors
6:20
and
6:20
drawers
6:21
or
6:21
even
6:21
doors
6:21
just
6:22
to
6:22
keep
6:22
it
6:22
cheap.
6:23
And
6:23
that's
6:24
where
6:24
the
6:24
mistakes
6:24
happen
6:25
of
6:25
just
6:26
copying
6:26
that
6:27
old
6:27
plan.
6:28
And
6:28
so
6:29
doors
6:29
are
6:30
great.
6:31
Here's
6:31
the
6:31
problem,
6:32
though.
6:32
Let's
6:32
talk
6:32
about
6:33
the
6:33
price
6:33
of
6:33
a
6:34
cabinet.
6:34
So
6:35
if
6:35
I
6:35
took
6:35
a
6:35
three
6:36
foot
6:36
wide
6:36
cabinet
6:37
and
6:38
I
6:38
had
6:38
a
6:39
three
6:39
drawer
6:39
cabinet
6:40
there,
6:40
and
6:40
then
6:41
I
6:41
had
6:41
a
6:41
two
6:42
door
6:42
with
6:42
doors
6:43
all
6:43
the
6:43
way
6:43
up,
6:43
a
6:43
full
6:43
height
6:44
door
6:44
cabinet
6:44
of
6:44
the
6:45
same
6:45
size,
6:46
on
6:46
average,
6:47
that
6:47
drawer
6:47
cabinets
6:48
going
6:48
to
6:48
be
6:48
twice
6:48
the
6:49
money
6:49
as
6:50
the
6:50
one
6:50
next
6:50
to
6:50
it.
6:51
So,
6:51
so
6:51
many
6:52
people
6:52
go
6:52
into
6:52
builder
6:53
homes,
6:53
theyve
6:53
got
6:53
a
6:54
builder,
6:54
great
6:54
home,
6:54
and
6:54
theres
6:55
nothing
6:55
wrong
6:55
with
6:55
that.
6:56
Spec
6:56
builder
6:57
cranked
6:57
it
6:57
out.
6:58
But
6:58
they
6:59
only
6:59
put
6:59
so
6:59
many
6:59
drawers
7:00
in
7:00
because
7:00
theyre
7:00
trying
7:01
to
7:01
save
7:01
on
7:01
the
7:01
budget.
7:02
Theyre
7:03
not
7:03
going
7:03
to
7:03
put
7:03
in
7:03
a
7:03
ton
7:04
of
7:04
drawers
7:04
in
7:04
there,
7:04
typically.
7:05
So
7:06
they
7:06
want
7:06
to
7:07
reduce
7:07
the
7:07
price
7:07
of
7:07
the
7:08
cabinets
7:08
down
7:08
because
7:08
theyre
7:09
trying
7:09
to
7:09
keep
7:10
that
7:10
house
7:10
at
7:10
an
7:10
affordable
7:11
price.
7:11
And
7:12
they've
7:12
got
7:12
to
7:12
make
7:12
their
7:12
margins
7:13
on
7:13
it
7:13
so
7:13
they
7:13
can
7:13
do
7:14
more
7:14
houses
7:14
and
7:15
have
7:15
a
7:15
strong
7:15
business
7:16
model.
7:16
And
7:17
so
7:17
the
7:17
builder,
7:17
basic
7:18
kitchens
7:18
sometimes
7:19
just
7:19
have
7:20
basic
7:20
layouts
7:21
in
7:21
it.
7:21
And
7:22
I
7:22
worked
7:22
on
7:22
a
7:23
big
7:23
high
7:23
rise
7:24
in
7:24
the
7:24
Bellevue,
7:25
Washington
7:25
area,
7:26
for
7:26
instance,
7:27
and
7:27
I
7:27
had
7:27
corner
7:28
cabinets
7:28
throughout
7:28
this
7:29
high
7:29
rise.
7:29
In
7:29
the
7:29
design
7:30
and
7:30
in
7:31
the
7:31
budget
7:31
cutting
7:31
phase,
7:32
we
7:32
took
7:33
out
7:33
every
7:33
single
7:34
one
7:34
of
7:34
the
7:34
budget
7:34
of
7:34
the
7:35
corner
7:35
cabinets
7:35
to
7:35
save
7:36
money
7:36
and
7:36
put
7:37
in
7:37
two
7:37
filters,
7:38
fillers
7:38
there.
7:39
Sorry,
7:39
we
7:39
just
7:39
had
7:40
two
7:40
fillers
7:40
there.
7:41
So
7:41
we
7:41
could
7:42
absolutely
7:43
save
7:44
on
7:44
every
7:44
one
7:44
of
7:44
those
7:45
corner
7:45
cabinets.
7:46
So
7:46
homeowner
7:47
moved
7:47
in,
7:47
didn't
7:48
notice
7:48
that
7:48
they
7:48
have
7:49
zero
7:49
access
7:50
into
7:50
that
7:50
corner.
7:51
And
7:51
that's
7:52
how
7:52
they
7:52
did
7:52
it.
7:52
That
7:52
was
7:53
the
7:53
builder's
7:54
choice
7:54
to
7:55
do
7:55
that.
7:55
And
7:56
that's
7:57
way
7:57
they
7:57
did
7:57
it.
7:58
And
7:58
sometimes
7:58
in
7:59
a
7:59
good
7:59
design,
7:59
sometimes
8:00
not
8:00
using
8:00
that
8:01
corner
8:01
gives
8:02
you
8:02
other
8:02
things
8:02
you
8:03
can.
8:03
So
8:03
I'm
8:03
not
8:03
saying
8:03
that's
8:04
the
8:04
wrong
8:04
answer,
8:05
but
8:05
on
8:05
the
8:05
entire
8:06
project,
8:06
we
8:06
had
8:07
no
8:07
corner
8:07
cabinets
8:08
because
8:08
they
8:08
just
8:08
put
8:08
in
8:08
two
8:09
little
8:09
corner
8:09
fillers
8:10
and
8:10
said
8:10
we're
8:10
voiding
8:11
that
8:11
space
8:11
and
8:12
not
8:12
going
8:12
to
8:12
use
8:12
it.
8:13
So
8:13
really,
8:14
this
8:14
is
8:14
the
8:14
time,
8:14
as
8:15
you
8:15
jump
8:15
in,
8:16
to
8:16
update
8:17
everything.
8:18
You
8:18
want
8:18
to
8:18
have
8:19
that
8:19
designer
8:19
that's
8:19
going
8:19
to
8:20
say,
8:20
hey,
8:20
where
8:20
are
8:20
you
8:21
putting
8:21
this?
8:22
I
8:22
want
8:22
that
8:22
designer
8:23
to
8:23
come
8:23
over
8:23
to
8:23
your
8:23
house,
8:24
look
8:24
through
8:24
the
8:24
cabinets,
8:25
see
8:25
what
8:26
you
8:26
have,
8:26
see
8:26
what
8:26
you
8:27
might
8:27
want
8:27
to
8:27
add
8:27
to
8:28
it,
8:28
and
8:29
make
8:29
sure
8:29
that
8:29
they
8:30
create
8:30
a
8:30
better
8:31
home
8:31
for
8:32
all
8:32
your
8:32
stuff.
8:33
And
8:33
this
8:33
is
8:34
really
8:34
where
8:34
good
8:34
design
8:35
starts
8:35
to
8:35
come
8:35
in.
8:35
This
8:35
is
8:36
not
8:36
even
8:36
talking
8:36
about
8:37
getting
8:37
it
8:37
pretty.
8:38
We're
8:38
just
8:38
trying
8:38
to
8:38
create
8:39
an
8:40
area
8:40
that
8:41
satisfies
8:41
your
8:42
storage
8:42
needs
8:43
before
8:43
we
8:43
go
8:44
down
8:44
the
8:44
rabbit
8:44
hole
8:45
of
8:45
all
8:45
the
8:45
design
8:46
elements
8:46
within
8:47
that.
8:47
And
8:48
so
8:48
that's
8:48
really
8:48
where
8:48
the
8:49
key
8:49
is
8:49
here,
8:49
is
8:49
to
8:49
take
8:50
the
8:50
time,
8:50
not
8:51
copy
8:51
the
8:51
old
8:52
design.
8:52
You
8:52
can
8:52
go,
8:52
hey,
8:53
it
8:53
worked
8:53
perfectly.
8:54
There's
8:54
no
8:54
problem
8:54
with
8:54
it.
8:55
But
8:55
you
8:55
know
8:55
something?
8:56
If
8:56
it's
8:56
been
8:57
over
8:57
15
8:57
years,
8:57
which
8:58
most
8:58
kitchen
8:58
remodels
8:59
are,
8:59
it's
9:00
time
9:00
to
9:00
update
9:00
it
9:01
and
9:01
be
9:01
more
9:01
efficient.
9:02
And
9:02
then
9:03
afterwards
9:03
you'll
9:03
realize,
9:04
oh,
9:04
my
9:04
gosh,
9:05
I'm
9:05
so
9:05
happy
9:05
I
9:05
did
9:06
this.
9:06
It's
9:07
so
9:07
much
9:07
easier
9:07
to
9:08
access
9:08
things
9:09
in
9:09
the
9:09
corner.
9:09
I
9:10
could
9:10
actually
9:10
get
9:10
down
9:11
into
9:11
the
9:11
bottom
9:12
of
9:12
that
9:12
cabinet
9:13
where
9:13
I
9:13
had
9:13
to
9:13
go
9:13
drop
9:14
to
9:14
a
9:14
knee
9:14
and
9:14
dig
9:14
back
9:15
there.
9:15
I
9:15
have
9:15
a
9:15
rollout
9:15
now.
9:16
There.
9:16
There
9:16
are
9:17
so
9:17
many
9:17
things
9:17
you
9:17
can
9:18
do.
9:18
Maybe
9:18
putting
9:18
a
9:18
rollout
9:19
tray
9:19
at
9:19
the
9:19
bottom
9:20
of
9:20
the
9:20
kitchen
9:21
sink
9:21
so
9:22
you
9:22
can
9:22
roll
9:22
out
9:22
all
9:22
those
9:22
cleaning
9:23
supplies
9:23
or
9:23
anything
9:24
else
9:24
that's
9:24
stored
9:24
around
9:25
there.
9:25
So
9:26
there's
9:26
really
9:26
a
9:26
lot
9:26
of
9:26
things
9:26
that
9:27
you
9:27
can
9:27
do
9:28
to
9:28
really
9:29
use
9:29
that
9:29
space
9:30
and
9:31
use
9:31
it
9:31
efficiently.
9:32
And
9:32
when
9:32
we
9:32
come
9:32
back,
9:33
I
9:33
want
9:33
to
9:33
talk
9:33
about
9:33
cabinets
9:34
because
9:34
the
9:35
style
9:35
of
9:35
cabinet
9:36
you
9:36
use,
9:37
whether
9:37
it's
9:37
a
9:38
face
9:38
frame
9:38
or
9:38
a
9:38
frameless
9:39
or
9:39
an
9:39
inset,
9:40
will
9:40
tell
9:40
you
9:41
how
9:41
much
9:41
storage
9:41
space
9:42
you
9:42
have
9:42
and
9:42
how
9:42
easy
9:43
it
9:43
is
9:43
to
9:43
access
9:44
it.
9:44
And
9:45
that's
9:45
a
9:45
real
9:45
important
9:45
one
9:46
right
9:46
here
9:46
that
9:46
I
9:46
want
9:46
to
9:46
talk
9:47
about,
9:47
because
9:48
as
9:48
part
9:48
of
9:48
the
9:48
planning
9:49
stuff,
9:49
that's
9:50
where
9:50
if
9:50
you
9:50
could
9:50
fit
9:50
it
9:51
all
9:51
in
9:51
there
9:51
or
9:52
if
9:52
you're
9:52
adding
9:53
more
9:53
space
9:54
to
9:54
store
9:54
things
9:55
in
9:55
that.
9:55
All
9:55
right,
9:56
everybody.
9:56
Hey,
9:56
if
9:56
you
9:56
want
9:56
to
9:57
find
9:57
out
9:57
more
9:57
about
9:57
us,
9:57
head
9:58
over
9:58
to
9:58
aroundthehouse
9:59
online.com
10:01
or
10:01
give
10:01
us
10:01
a
10:01
call
10:01
at
10:02
833-239-4144
10:04
that
10:05
number
10:05
again,
10:05
833-239-4144
10:08
around
10:08
the
10:09
house.
10:09
We'll
10:09
be
10:09
right
10:09
back.
10:10
We're
10:10
talking
10:11
kitchen
10:11
design.
10:11
Don't
10:12
go
10:12
anywhere.
10:48
What's
10:49
up?
10:49
This
10:49
is
10:49
sticks
10:50
it
10:50
in
10:50
ya
10:50
and
10:51
satchel
10:51
from
10:52
steel
10:52
Panther.
10:53
And
10:53
you
10:54
are
10:54
listening
10:54
to
10:55
around
10:55
the
10:55
house.
10:56
With
10:56
eric
10:56
g.
10:57
Yeah,
10:58
we
10:59
love
10:59
eric
10:59
g.
11:00
And
11:00
you
11:00
should
11:00
too.
11:03
1987.
11:05
I
11:06
never
11:06
wanna
11:07
leave
11:07
you.
11:07
Welcome
11:08
back
11:08
to
11:08
the
11:08
around
11:09
the
11:09
house
11:09
show,
11:09
the
11:10
next
11:10
generation
11:10
of
11:11
home
11:11
improvement.
11:11
Thanks
11:12
for
11:12
joining
11:12
me
11:12
today.
11:12
I'm
11:13
eric
11:13
G.
11:14
We've
11:14
been
11:14
talking
11:14
today
11:15
about
11:15
designing
11:16
a
11:16
kitchen
11:16
in
11:16
finishing
11:17
the
11:17
project.
11:18
And
11:18
if
11:18
you
11:18
want
11:19
to
11:19
find
11:19
out
11:19
more
11:19
about
11:19
us,
11:20
head
11:20
over
11:20
to
11:20
aroundthehouse
11:21
online.com
11:22
dot.
11:23
We
11:23
were
11:23
just
11:23
talking
11:23
about
11:24
hiring
11:24
a
11:24
designer
11:25
and
11:25
getting
11:25
this
11:25
project
11:26
off
11:26
on
11:26
the
11:26
right
11:27
foot.
11:28
Now,
11:28
the
11:28
next
11:28
part
11:29
here
11:29
is
11:29
super
11:29
important,
11:30
and
11:30
we
11:30
started
11:30
to
11:30
talk
11:31
about
11:31
this
11:31
a
11:31
little
11:31
bit.
11:31
Cabinetry.
11:33
And
11:33
let's
11:33
give
11:33
a
11:33
little
11:34
primer
11:34
on
11:34
cabinetry.
11:35
If
11:35
you
11:35
haven't
11:36
seen
11:36
cabinetry
11:37
out
11:37
there,
11:37
really
11:38
thought
11:38
about
11:38
it.
11:38
There's
11:39
three
11:39
different
11:40
styles
11:40
of
11:40
cabinets
11:41
that
11:41
you
11:41
see
11:41
out
11:41
there
11:42
in
11:42
the
11:43
United
11:43
States.
11:43
Typically,
11:44
you
11:44
see
11:44
an
11:44
american
11:45
face
11:45
frame
11:45
where
11:45
you
11:46
have
11:46
this
11:46
one
11:46
by
11:47
two
11:47
face
11:47
frame
11:47
that
11:48
goes
11:48
around
11:48
the
11:48
cabinet
11:49
face
11:49
of
11:49
the
11:49
box.
11:50
And
11:50
of
11:50
course,
11:51
the
11:51
doors
11:51
overlay
11:52
that.
11:53
And
11:53
those
11:53
doors
11:53
are
11:54
going
11:54
to
11:54
be
11:54
called
11:54
either
11:54
a
11:55
full
11:55
overlay,
11:55
where
11:55
there's
11:56
like
11:56
a
11:56
316
11:57
gap
11:57
between
11:58
them,
11:58
or
11:59
on
11:59
lesser
11:59
expensive
12:00
cabinets,
12:00
you'll
12:00
have
12:00
what
12:00
they
12:01
call
12:01
a
12:01
half
12:01
overlay,
12:02
where
12:02
the
12:02
doors
12:03
are
12:03
only
12:03
overlaying
12:04
that
12:04
face
12:05
frame
12:05
by
12:05
a
12:05
half.
12:06
And
12:06
that's
12:07
how
12:07
they
12:07
can
12:07
save
12:07
money
12:07
on
12:08
doors
12:08
and
12:08
drawer
12:08
fronts
12:08
and
12:08
stuff,
12:09
by
12:09
having
12:09
those
12:09
larger
12:10
gaps.
12:11
And
12:11
that's
12:11
where
12:11
you
12:11
can
12:12
find
12:12
a
12:12
lesser
12:12
expensive
12:13
cabinetry
12:13
with
12:14
that
12:14
less
12:15
of
12:15
an
12:15
overlay.
12:15
And
12:15
it
12:16
also
12:16
gives
12:16
them,
12:17
you
12:17
don't
12:17
have
12:17
to
12:17
be
12:17
as
12:18
exact
12:18
with
12:18
the
12:18
door
12:19
sizes
12:19
because
12:19
you've
12:19
got
12:20
such
12:20
a
12:20
big
12:20
space
12:20
there.
12:21
If
12:21
something's
12:22
off
12:22
by
12:22
a
12:22
16th
12:23
or
12:23
an
12:23
8th
12:23
of
12:23
an
12:23
inch,
12:24
you
12:24
don't
12:24
really
12:25
see
12:25
it
12:25
that
12:26
much.
12:26
And
12:26
so
12:27
it
12:27
hides
12:27
a
12:27
lot
12:27
of
12:27
sins
12:28
in
12:28
the
12:28
cabinet
12:28
making
12:29
progress.
12:30
So
12:30
here's
12:31
the
12:31
thing.
12:31
Now,
12:31
when
12:31
you're
12:31
talking
12:32
about
12:32
the
12:33
basically,
12:33
that
12:34
frameless
12:34
cabinet
12:35
is
12:35
the
12:35
next
12:35
style
12:36
that
12:36
you
12:36
have.
12:37
And
12:37
so
12:37
instead
12:37
of
12:37
having
12:38
that
12:38
one
12:38
by
12:38
two
12:39
face
12:39
frame
12:39
around
12:39
the
12:40
outside,
12:40
they
12:41
actually
12:41
build
12:42
the
12:42
sides
12:43
of
12:43
the
12:43
box
12:43
out
12:43
of
12:43
either
12:44
five,
12:44
eight,
12:44
or
12:44
three
12:45
quarter
12:45
inch
12:46
plywood
12:46
or
12:46
particle
12:47
board.
12:47
And
12:48
here's
12:48
the
12:48
thing.
12:48
When
12:48
it
12:49
comes
12:49
down
12:49
to
12:49
that,
12:50
actually,
12:50
to
12:50
me,
12:50
is
12:50
a
12:51
stronger
12:51
cabinet,
12:52
because
12:52
you
12:52
don't
12:52
have
12:53
that
12:53
face
12:53
frame,
12:53
which
12:53
is
12:54
the
12:54
strength
12:54
of
12:54
the
12:54
cabinet
12:55
out
12:55
there.
12:55
It
12:56
makes
12:56
it
12:56
to
12:56
the
12:56
sides
12:57
of
12:57
the
12:57
strength.
12:57
So
12:57
instead
12:58
of
12:58
being
12:58
that
12:58
front
12:58
of
12:59
the
12:59
face
12:59
frame
12:59
being
12:59
the
13:00
strength,
13:00
now
13:01
the
13:01
sides
13:01
are,
13:02
which
13:02
I
13:02
think
13:02
makes
13:02
for
13:02
a
13:03
more
13:03
durable
13:03
cabinet.
13:04
But
13:04
the
13:04
biggest
13:04
thing
13:04
is
13:05
you
13:05
get
13:05
a
13:05
ton
13:06
of
13:06
more
13:06
cabinet
13:07
storage
13:07
space
13:08
and
13:08
an
13:08
average
13:08
kitchen
13:09
if
13:09
you
13:09
make
13:09
that
13:10
out
13:10
of
13:10
a
13:11
frameless
13:11
style
13:12
box.
13:12
Versus
13:12
a
13:12
face
13:13
frame.
13:13
You
13:13
can
13:13
add
13:13
as
13:14
much
13:14
as
13:14
an
13:14
18
13:14
inch
13:14
cabinet
13:16
to
13:16
your
13:16
storage
13:17
space
13:17
down
13:17
below.
13:17
And
13:17
that
13:18
makes
13:18
a
13:18
big
13:18
difference,
13:19
especially
13:19
when
13:20
you're
13:20
trying
13:20
to
13:20
use
13:20
a
13:20
lot
13:20
of
13:20
drawers
13:21
because
13:21
it
13:21
gives
13:21
you
13:22
so
13:22
much
13:22
more
13:22
space
13:23
to
13:23
use.
13:24
And
13:24
so
13:24
that
13:24
really
13:25
makes
13:25
it
13:25
handy.
13:26
And
13:26
then
13:26
the
13:26
other
13:26
one,
13:26
which
13:27
is
13:27
on
13:27
higher
13:27
end
13:28
cabinets
13:28
or
13:28
more
13:28
furniture
13:29
looking
13:29
pieces,
13:30
and
13:30
that's
13:30
what
13:30
they
13:30
call
13:31
a
13:32
full
13:32
inset
13:33
or
13:33
an
13:33
inset
13:33
cabinet.
13:34
And
13:34
what
13:34
that
13:35
is,
13:35
or
13:35
a
13:35
flush
13:35
inset
13:36
is
13:36
another
13:37
thing
13:37
you
13:37
see
13:37
it
13:37
called.
13:38
It
13:38
is
13:38
a
13:38
face
13:39
frame
13:39
style,
13:39
but
13:40
they
13:40
flushed
13:40
out
13:41
the
13:41
drawer
13:41
fronts
13:41
and
13:41
door
13:42
fronts,
13:42
so
13:43
they're
13:43
on
13:43
the
13:43
same
13:43
plane
13:44
as
13:44
the
13:44
face
13:44
frame.
13:45
And
13:45
that
13:45
is
13:46
a
13:46
more
13:46
expensive
13:46
cabinet
13:47
to
13:47
build.
13:47
It
13:47
gives
13:47
you
13:48
that
13:48
inset
13:48
furniture
13:49
look
13:49
something
13:50
very
13:50
old
13:51
world
13:51
and
13:51
a
13:51
really
13:51
nice
13:52
look.
13:53
But
13:53
there's
13:53
a
13:53
lot
13:53
of
13:54
intricacies
13:55
in
13:55
building
13:55
that
13:55
type
13:56
of
13:56
cabinet.
13:57
So
13:57
that's
13:57
something
13:57
you
13:57
got
13:57
to
13:58
be
13:58
really
13:58
careful
13:58
with.
13:59
And
13:59
especially
13:59
in
14:00
areas
14:00
where
14:00
I
14:01
high
14:01
humidity
14:01
on
14:02
a
14:02
coast
14:02
or
14:02
on
14:02
an
14:03
island,
14:03
someplace
14:04
like
14:04
that
14:04
is
14:04
probably
14:05
not
14:05
the
14:05
best
14:05
for
14:06
you
14:06
because
14:06
theres
14:07
literally
14:07
no
14:08
adjustment
14:09
when
14:09
things
14:09
are
14:09
inset
14:10
like
14:10
that.
14:10
So
14:10
as
14:11
things
14:11
expand
14:11
and
14:12
contract,
14:12
that
14:12
can
14:13
cause
14:13
problems
14:13
down
14:13
the
14:14
road.
14:14
Now,
14:15
I
14:15
do
14:15
like
14:15
the
14:16
frameless
14:16
cabinets.
14:17
And
14:17
it
14:17
used
14:17
to
14:17
be,
14:17
the
14:18
frameless
14:18
used
14:18
to
14:18
be
14:18
a
14:18
lot
14:18
more
14:19
money
14:19
than
14:20
the
14:20
face
14:20
frame.
14:20
But
14:21
really,
14:21
that
14:21
has
14:21
changed.
14:22
I
14:22
mean,
14:22
you
14:22
think
14:22
about
14:22
it,
14:22
Kia
14:23
does
14:23
frameless.
14:23
Now,
14:24
a
14:24
lot
14:25
of
14:25
these
14:25
different
14:25
cabinet
14:25
companies
14:26
out
14:26
there,
14:27
and
14:27
a
14:27
lot
14:27
of
14:27
the
14:27
higher
14:28
end
14:28
cabinet
14:28
companies,
14:29
especially
14:29
coming
14:29
out
14:29
of
14:30
Europe
14:30
and
14:30
Canada,
14:31
those
14:32
end
14:32
up
14:32
using
14:32
frameless
14:33
as
14:33
well.
14:34
Nothing
14:34
wrong
14:34
with
14:34
a
14:35
face
14:35
frame
14:35
cabinet,
14:36
but
14:36
you
14:36
will
14:37
get
14:37
a
14:37
little
14:37
less
14:38
storage
14:38
space.
14:38
That's
14:39
easier
14:39
to
14:39
access
14:40
that
14:40
way.
14:41
And
14:41
that's
14:41
really
14:41
one
14:41
of
14:41
the
14:41
things
14:42
that
14:42
you
14:42
see
14:43
when
14:43
it
14:43
comes
14:44
to
14:44
cabinetry
14:45
is
14:45
how
14:46
much
14:46
can
14:46
you
14:46
put
14:46
in
14:46
there
14:46
and
14:47
how
14:47
much
14:47
can
14:47
you
14:47
store?
14:48
Now,
14:49
here's
14:49
another
14:49
thing.
14:49
This
14:49
is
14:50
a
14:50
big
14:50
debate,
14:50
and
14:51
this
14:51
is
14:51
one
14:51
that
14:51
I
14:52
have
14:52
my
14:52
personal
14:52
opinion
14:53
on.
14:53
So
14:53
love
14:53
it
14:54
or
14:54
hate
14:54
it,
14:54
this
14:54
is
14:54
my
14:54
opinion.
14:55
When
14:55
it
14:55
comes
14:56
to
14:56
frameless
14:56
cabinetries,
14:58
I
14:58
really
14:58
like
14:59
more
14:59
of
15:00
a
15:00
furniture
15:00
board
15:01
or
15:01
a
15:01
particle
15:01
board
15:01
construction.
15:03
Here's
15:03
why.
15:04
What
15:04
happens
15:05
with
15:05
plywood
15:05
is
15:06
not
15:07
exactly
15:08
the
15:08
same
15:08
size.
15:09
If
15:09
you
15:10
take
15:10
a
15:10
micrometer
15:10
measure,
15:11
three
15:11
quarter
15:11
inch
15:11
plywood,
15:12
rarely
15:12
is
15:12
it
15:13
three
15:13
quarters,
15:14
because
15:14
it
15:14
is
15:14
a
15:15
bunch
15:15
of
15:15
different
15:16
layers
15:16
of
15:17
veneer.
15:18
And
15:19
that
15:19
can
15:20
add
15:20
up
15:20
in
15:20
a
15:20
large
15:21
kitchen.
15:22
I
15:22
have
15:22
seen
15:23
on
15:23
a
15:24
1416
15:25
foot
15:25
wall
15:25
of
15:26
cabinets,
15:27
I've
15:27
gained
15:27
an
15:27
inch
15:28
before.
15:28
I
15:29
tell
15:29
you
15:29
what
15:29
that
15:30
changes
15:30
things
15:30
when
15:30
you're
15:31
trying
15:31
to
15:31
put
15:31
custom
15:31
cabinetry
15:32
together,
15:32
because
15:33
most
15:33
companies
15:33
do
15:33
not
15:34
go
15:34
through
15:34
and
15:35
mic
15:35
out
15:35
and
15:36
adjust
15:36
for
15:37
that
15:37
unit
15:37
of
15:37
plywood
15:38
and
15:38
what
15:38
the
15:38
difference
15:39
is.
15:39
And
15:39
so
15:39
if
15:40
you
15:40
start
15:40
adding
15:40
a
15:41
16th
15:42
or
15:42
a
15:43
32nd
15:43
or
15:44
230
15:44
seconds
15:45
whatever
15:45
or
15:45
16th,
15:46
it
15:46
just
15:47
adds
15:47
up.
15:48
And
15:48
so
15:48
you
15:49
could
15:49
actually
15:49
get,
15:50
if
15:50
it's
15:50
bigger,
15:51
you
15:51
end
15:51
up
15:51
having
15:51
more
15:52
cabinets
15:52
than
15:52
what
15:52
you
15:53
do.
15:53
So
15:53
you
15:54
need
15:54
to
15:54
really
15:54
come
15:54
in
15:55
and
15:55
design
15:55
with
15:55
fillers.
15:56
You
15:56
can
15:56
see
15:56
there's
15:56
a
15:56
lot
15:56
of
15:57
things
15:57
that
15:57
come
15:57
in
15:58
to
15:59
designing
15:59
a
15:59
kitchen
16:00
and
16:00
making
16:00
sure
16:00
that
16:01
you
16:01
don't
16:01
have
16:02
those
16:02
mistakes.
16:03
Now
16:04
the
16:04
next
16:04
one
16:04
here
16:04
is
16:05
dealing
16:05
with
16:06
dovetail
16:06
drawers
16:07
versus
16:07
a
16:07
glued,
16:08
endowed
16:08
drawer.
16:09
And
16:10
when
16:10
we
16:10
used
16:10
to
16:10
have
16:11
side
16:11
mount
16:11
glides
16:12
or
16:12
the
16:13
white
16:13
epoxy
16:14
ones,
16:14
there
16:15
were
16:15
the
16:15
bottom
16:16
kind
16:16
of
16:16
bottom
16:16
side
16:17
mount
16:17
glides,
16:17
the
16:17
cheap
16:18
ones
16:18
used
16:18
to
16:18
see
16:18
in
16:18
the
16:19
eighties
16:19
and
16:19
nineties,
16:20
the
16:20
draw
16:21
box
16:21
construction
16:23
carried
16:23
all
16:23
the
16:24
load.
16:24
And
16:25
then
16:25
you
16:25
had
16:25
the
16:25
hardware
16:26
that
16:26
was
16:26
fastening
16:27
that
16:27
to
16:27
the
16:27
box.
16:28
Now
16:28
with
16:29
most
16:29
of
16:29
the
16:30
just
16:30
even
16:30
low
16:31
end
16:31
decent
16:31
cabinet
16:32
companies
16:32
up
16:32
to
16:32
the
16:32
better
16:33
ones,
16:33
they
16:33
have
16:34
undermount
16:34
glides,
16:35
which
16:35
sits
16:35
under
16:36
the
16:36
drawer
16:36
box.
16:37
And
16:37
so
16:37
the
16:38
drawer
16:38
box
16:38
is
16:38
just
16:38
holding
16:39
the
16:39
things
16:39
in
16:39
the
16:39
drawer.
16:40
It's
16:40
not
16:41
the
16:41
structural
16:42
element
16:42
that
16:42
it
16:42
used
16:43
to
16:43
be.
16:43
So
16:44
where
16:45
20
16:45
years
16:46
ago
16:46
I'd
16:46
say,
16:46
oh,
16:46
you've
16:47
got
16:47
to
16:47
have
16:47
dovetail
16:48
drawers.
16:48
Now
16:49
I
16:49
say,
16:49
you
16:49
really
16:50
don't.
16:50
You
16:51
can
16:51
go
16:51
with
16:51
a
16:51
doweled
16:52
or
16:52
even
16:52
a
16:52
stapled
16:53
and
16:53
glued
16:53
drawer
16:53
box
16:54
made
16:54
out
16:54
of
16:54
a
16:54
hardwood
16:55
or
16:55
even
16:55
a
16:55
plywood,
16:56
hardwood
16:56
plywood
16:57
that's
16:58
going
16:58
to
16:58
hold
16:58
up
16:58
for
16:58
you.
16:59
It's
16:59
not
16:59
going
16:59
to
16:59
be
16:59
a
17:00
problem.
17:00
If
17:00
you've
17:01
got
17:01
sleechy
17:01
or
17:01
bloom
17:02
glides
17:02
in
17:02
there,
17:03
something
17:03
decent,
17:04
even
17:04
some
17:04
of
17:04
the
17:04
nice
17:04
grass
17:05
ones,
17:05
guess
17:06
what?
17:06
That's
17:06
going
17:06
to
17:06
work
17:07
great
17:07
for
17:07
you
17:07
and
17:07
it'll
17:07
hold
17:08
up
17:08
for
17:08
years
17:09
to
17:09
come.
17:09
And
17:10
so
17:10
that's
17:10
super
17:11
important.
17:11
So
17:12
really,
17:12
when
17:12
it
17:12
comes
17:13
down
17:13
to
17:13
that
17:13
hardware
17:14
that
17:14
you're
17:14
using
17:15
for
17:15
the
17:15
glides,
17:16
whether
17:16
its
17:16
soft
17:17
clothes
17:17
or
17:17
whatever,
17:18
thats
17:18
the
17:18
king.
17:18
So
17:19
make
17:19
sure
17:19
that
17:19
youre
17:20
asking
17:20
those
17:21
questions.
17:21
If
17:21
youre
17:22
out
17:22
shopping
17:22
for
17:22
cabinetry,
17:23
what
17:23
hardware
17:23
is
17:23
going
17:24
in
17:24
there?
17:24
What
17:25
brand
17:25
is
17:25
it?
17:26
And
17:26
do
17:26
your
17:26
research
17:27
and
17:27
find
17:27
out,
17:28
because
17:28
that
17:28
brand
17:28
really
17:29
makes
17:29
a
17:29
difference.
17:30
And
17:30
this
17:30
is
17:30
why
17:31
I
17:31
really
17:31
discourage
17:32
people
17:32
from
17:32
buying
17:33
the
17:33
import
17:34
overseas
17:34
cabinetry
17:35
because
17:35
heres
17:35
what
17:36
happens,
17:37
and
17:37
this
17:37
can
17:37
be
17:37
a
17:37
big
17:38
problem.
17:38
If
17:39
youre
17:39
out
17:39
there
17:39
and
17:40
you
17:40
buy
17:40
a
17:40
brand
17:40
new
17:40
kitchen
17:41
from
17:41
one
17:41
of
17:41
the
17:41
import
17:42
places
17:42
it
17:43
came
17:43
in,
17:43
there's
17:44
a
17:44
couple
17:44
issues
17:44
that
17:45
you
17:45
can
17:45
run
17:45
into,
17:45
one
17:46
of
17:46
them
17:46
being
17:47
that
17:47
a
17:47
lot
17:47
of
17:48
those
17:48
plywoods
17:48
and
17:48
stuff
17:49
coming
17:49
in,
17:49
you
17:50
don't
17:50
know
17:50
what
17:50
chemicals
17:51
are
17:51
in
17:51
those.
17:51
Any
17:52
of
17:52
those
17:52
offshore
17:53
plywoods
17:53
could
17:53
have
17:53
formaldehydes,
17:54
things
17:54
like
17:55
that.
17:55
We
17:56
saw
17:56
some
17:56
big
17:56
issues
17:57
with
17:57
that
17:57
years
17:57
ago.
17:58
And
17:58
as
17:58
well
17:59
as
17:59
the
17:59
hardware
17:59
is
18:00
all
18:00
knockoff
18:00
stuff
18:01
generally.
18:01
So
18:02
most
18:02
of
18:02
the
18:02
brands
18:03
that
18:03
I've
18:03
seen
18:03
out
18:03
there
18:04
of
18:04
the
18:04
import
18:04
stuff,
18:05
you
18:05
will
18:06
never
18:06
find
18:07
a
18:07
replacement
18:07
hinge
18:08
for
18:08
that
18:08
down
18:08
the
18:08
road
18:09
because
18:09
they
18:10
were
18:10
making
18:10
them
18:10
for
18:10
that.
18:11
It's
18:11
not
18:11
a
18:12
known
18:12
brand.
18:12
And
18:13
so
18:13
really,
18:14
you're
18:14
going
18:14
to
18:14
have
18:14
to
18:14
rebuild
18:15
some
18:15
cabinets
18:15
down
18:16
the
18:16
road
18:16
when
18:17
that
18:17
hinge
18:17
or
18:18
drawer
18:18
glide
18:18
fails.
18:19
And
18:20
that
18:20
can
18:20
be
18:20
a
18:20
big
18:20
problem.
18:21
So
18:21
I
18:21
don't
18:21
want
18:21
to
18:21
see
18:22
that
18:22
happen
18:22
to
18:22
you.
18:23
So
18:23
really
18:23
make
18:23
sure
18:24
that
18:24
you've
18:24
got
18:25
that
18:25
hardware
18:26
dialed
18:26
in
18:27
because
18:28
that's
18:28
something
18:28
that's
18:28
going
18:28
to
18:29
be
18:29
important.
18:29
Now,
18:30
one
18:30
of
18:30
the
18:30
next
18:30
ones
18:31
here
18:31
is
18:31
finish.
18:32
And
18:32
I
18:32
want
18:32
to
18:32
talk
18:32
about
18:32
this
18:32
before
18:33
we
18:33
go
18:33
out
18:33
to
18:33
break
18:34
because
18:34
finish
18:34
is
18:35
key
18:35
right
18:35
here.
18:36
I
18:36
want
18:36
to
18:36
see
18:36
a
18:37
conversion
18:38
varnish.
18:39
I
18:39
want
18:39
to
18:39
see
18:39
a
18:39
urethane.
18:40
Unless
18:41
you're
18:41
doing
18:41
some
18:42
italian
18:43
lacquered
18:44
with
18:44
60
18:45
coats
18:45
or
18:45
something
18:46
on
18:46
it,
18:46
I
18:47
don't
18:47
want
18:47
to
18:47
see
18:47
a
18:47
lacquer
18:47
finish
18:48
out
18:48
there.
18:48
That's
18:48
like
18:49
putting
18:49
it
18:49
on
18:49
a
18:49
55
18:50
Chevrolet.
18:50
It's
18:50
great
18:51
for
18:51
a
18:51
restoration
18:52
something.
18:52
There's
18:52
a
18:52
reason
18:53
why
18:53
we've
18:53
gone
18:53
to
18:53
better
18:54
finishes.
18:54
So
18:55
I
18:55
do
18:55
not
18:55
buy
18:56
cabinetry
18:56
that
18:57
has
18:57
just
18:57
a
18:58
regular
18:59
lacquer
18:59
finish
19:00
on
19:00
it.
19:00
The
19:01
water
19:01
based
19:01
stuff
19:01
is
19:01
great.
19:02
There's
19:02
some
19:02
great
19:03
new
19:03
finishes
19:03
out
19:03
there.
19:04
So
19:04
I'm
19:04
looking
19:04
for
19:05
a
19:05
two
19:06
part
19:06
finish
19:06
system
19:07
that
19:07
has
19:07
a
19:07
catalyst
19:08
on
19:08
it.
19:08
And
19:09
if
19:09
it's
19:09
baked
19:09
on,
19:09
it's
19:09
even
19:10
better.
19:10
That's
19:10
how
19:10
you
19:11
get
19:11
that
19:11
good
19:12
finish.
19:12
We
19:12
come
19:13
back,
19:13
we're
19:13
going
19:13
to
19:13
talk
19:14
more
19:14
about
19:14
custom
19:14
cabinetry
19:15
here
19:16
and
19:16
whether
19:16
you're
19:16
going
19:17
to
19:17
diy
19:17
this
19:17
or
19:18
hire
19:18
a
19:18
contractor
19:19
just
19:19
as
19:19
soon
19:19
as
19:19
around
19:19
the
19:20
house
19:20
returns.
19:39
Hey,
19:40
this
19:40
is
19:40
Ron
19:40
Keel,
19:41
the
19:41
metal
19:41
cowboy
19:42
from
19:42
Kiehl,
19:43
the
19:43
Ron
19:43
Keel
19:44
band
19:44
and
19:45
Steeler.
19:45
We
19:46
are
19:46
rocking
19:46
around
19:47
the
19:47
house
19:48
with
19:48
Eric
19:48
G.
19:49
Raise
19:49
you.
19:50
Welcome
19:50
back
19:51
to
19:51
the
19:51
around
19:51
the
19:51
house
19:52
show,
19:52
the
19:52
next
19:52
generation
19:52
of
19:53
home
19:53
improvement.
19:53
I'm
19:53
Eric
19:54
G.
19:54
We've
19:54
been
19:55
talking
19:55
about
19:55
designing
19:56
a
19:56
kitchen
19:56
and
19:56
getting
19:56
that
19:57
thing
19:57
finished.
19:58
And
19:58
with
19:58
my
19:58
30
19:59
years
19:59
of
20:00
kitchen
20:00
and
20:00
bath
20:00
design,
20:01
I
20:01
wanted
20:01
to
20:01
make
20:01
sure
20:02
and
20:02
get
20:02
some
20:02
of
20:02
this
20:02
knowledge
20:03
off
20:03
to
20:03
you.
20:03
You're
20:04
thinking
20:04
about
20:04
tackling
20:04
that
20:05
kind
20:05
of
20:05
project.
20:05
And
20:05
so
20:06
many
20:06
more
20:06
people
20:06
are
20:07
out
20:07
there
20:07
because
20:08
they
20:08
may
20:08
be
20:08
planning
20:09
on
20:09
buying
20:09
another
20:10
house,
20:10
getting
20:10
that
20:10
new
20:11
house,
20:11
and
20:11
they're
20:11
looking
20:11
at
20:11
the
20:12
interest
20:12
rates
20:12
going,
20:13
think
20:13
we're
20:13
going
20:13
to
20:13
do
20:13
our
20:13
kitchen?
20:14
Cause
20:14
I
20:14
tell
20:14
you,
20:14
what?
20:15
I'm
20:15
not
20:16
paying
20:16
three
20:17
times
20:17
the
20:17
interest
20:17
rate
20:18
to
20:18
get
20:18
this
20:18
going
20:18
this
20:19
year,
20:19
and
20:19
it's
20:19
not
20:20
looking
20:20
good
20:20
out
20:20
there
20:21
so
20:21
far
20:22
this
20:22
year
20:23
as
20:23
we
20:23
get
20:23
into
20:23
May.
20:23
So
20:24
let's
20:24
talk
20:24
about
20:24
this.
20:25
So
20:25
we've
20:25
been
20:25
talking
20:25
about
20:26
kind
20:26
of
20:26
quality
20:26
materials
20:27
and
20:27
the
20:27
right
20:28
things
20:28
here.
20:28
And
20:29
the
20:29
last
20:29
one
20:29
I
20:29
want
20:29
to
20:30
talk
20:30
about
20:30
is
20:31
custom.
20:32
And
20:32
the
20:32
word
20:32
custom
20:33
has
20:34
no
20:34
bearing
20:35
on
20:35
the
20:35
word
20:36
quality.
20:36
It
20:37
just
20:37
means
20:37
somebody
20:38
is
20:38
building
20:38
something
20:39
custom
20:40
for
20:40
you.
20:41
And
20:41
that's
20:41
something
20:41
important
20:42
because
20:42
so
20:43
many
20:43
people
20:43
go,
20:43
oh,
20:44
yes,
20:44
I'm
20:44
having
20:44
custom
20:45
cabinetry
20:45
made.
20:46
That
20:46
doesn't
20:47
mean
20:47
anything.
20:47
That
20:48
could
20:48
be
20:49
some
20:49
hack
20:49
putting
20:50
cabinets
20:50
together
20:50
for
20:50
the
20:51
first
20:51
time
20:51
in
20:52
their
20:52
garage,
20:53
trying
20:53
to
20:53
pretend
20:54
to
20:54
be
20:54
a
20:54
cabinet
20:54
maker.
20:54
So
20:55
think
20:55
about
20:56
what
20:56
that
20:57
actually
20:57
does
20:58
for
20:58
you
20:58
with
20:59
custom.
20:59
I
21:00
am
21:00
very
21:00
picky
21:01
on
21:01
my
21:01
cabinetry,
21:02
and
21:02
to
21:02
be
21:02
honest,
21:03
a
21:03
lot
21:03
of
21:03
these
21:03
major
21:03
manufacturers
21:04
out
21:04
there
21:05
do
21:05
a
21:05
pretty
21:05
decent
21:05
job
21:06
of
21:06
making
21:06
cabinets.
21:07
And
21:07
so
21:07
when
21:08
you
21:08
look
21:08
at
21:08
how
21:09
larger
21:09
cabinet
21:10
companies
21:10
make
21:11
cabinets,
21:12
they
21:12
quite
21:12
frankly
21:12
do
21:13
a
21:13
better
21:13
job
21:13
when
21:13
it
21:13
comes
21:14
to
21:14
finishing.
21:15
Until
21:15
you
21:15
get
21:16
into
21:16
that
21:16
high
21:16
end
21:17
luxury
21:17
stuff,
21:18
that's
21:18
where
21:18
it
21:18
starts
21:19
to
21:19
pay
21:19
off.
21:20
But
21:20
really,
21:21
custom
21:21
means
21:22
absolutely
21:23
nothing
21:24
when
21:24
it
21:24
comes
21:24
to
21:25
quality.
21:26
Semi
21:26
custom
21:27
in
21:27
most
21:28
cases
21:28
is
21:29
higher
21:29
quality
21:29
cabinetry.
21:30
If
21:30
you're
21:31
looking
21:31
at
21:31
the
21:31
hardware,
21:32
the
21:32
finish,
21:33
the
21:33
details,
21:34
the
21:34
durability,
21:35
quite
21:36
frankly,
21:36
just
21:36
is.
21:37
So
21:37
don't
21:37
get
21:38
hung
21:38
up
21:38
on
21:38
the
21:39
word
21:39
custom
21:39
because
21:40
it
21:40
can
21:40
mean
21:40
a
21:41
substandard
21:41
project
21:42
and
21:43
nobody
21:43
wants
21:43
to
21:43
pay
21:43
good
21:44
money
21:44
and
21:44
not
21:45
get
21:45
what
21:45
they
21:45
thought.
21:46
Now,
21:46
there's
21:46
a
21:47
lot
21:47
of
21:47
great
21:47
custom
21:47
cabinet
21:48
makers
21:48
out
21:48
there,
21:49
but
21:49
just
21:50
understand
21:50
that
21:50
you're
21:51
looking
21:51
for
21:52
the
21:52
stuff
21:52
we've
21:52
talked
21:52
about
21:53
earlier,
21:53
like
21:53
the
21:54
finish,
21:54
a
21:54
conversion
21:54
varnish
21:55
or
21:55
urethane
21:56
finish.
21:56
Stay
21:57
away
21:57
from
21:57
the
21:57
lacquers
21:58
and
21:58
all
21:59
the
21:59
other
21:59
quality
21:59
pieces
22:00
that
22:00
go
22:01
in
22:01
to
22:01
making
22:01
a
22:02
cabinetry.
22:02
Now,
22:03
when
22:03
it
22:03
comes
22:03
to
22:03
design,
22:04
this
22:04
is
22:04
a
22:04
big
22:04
one.
22:05
Right
22:05
now,
22:05
I
22:06
just
22:06
want
22:06
to
22:06
make
22:06
sure
22:06
when
22:07
it
22:07
comes
22:07
to
22:07
the
22:07
quality
22:07
of
22:08
the
22:08
materials
22:08
in
22:08
the
22:08
house,
22:09
it
22:09
depends
22:10
on
22:10
the
22:10
quality
22:10
of
22:10
the
22:10
house.
22:11
If
22:11
you're
22:11
going
22:11
to
22:11
put
22:12
a
22:12
nice
22:12
kitchen
22:13
in
22:13
there,
22:13
do
22:14
you
22:14
have
22:14
a
22:14
entry
22:15
level
22:15
house
22:16
or
22:16
do
22:16
you
22:16
have
22:16
an
22:17
entry
22:17
level,
22:18
high
22:18
end
22:19
house?
22:19
Or
22:20
do
22:20
you
22:20
have
22:20
a
22:20
luxury
22:21
mansion?
22:21
It
22:22
doesnt
22:22
matter.
22:23
But
22:23
really
22:23
making
22:24
sure
22:24
that
22:24
youre
22:24
putting
22:25
in
22:25
the
22:25
quality
22:26
that
22:26
fits
22:27
your
22:27
grade
22:27
of
22:28
house,
22:28
thats
22:29
where
22:29
the
22:29
key
22:29
is
22:30
right
22:30
there.
22:31
So
22:31
if
22:31
you
22:32
have
22:32
a
22:32
$500,000
22:33
house,
22:33
I
22:33
want
22:34
you
22:34
to
22:34
look
22:34
around
22:34
in
22:34
your
22:35
neighborhood
22:35
or
22:36
other
22:36
$500,000
22:37
houses
22:37
and
22:37
at
22:38
least
22:38
think
22:39
that
22:39
youre
22:39
putting
22:39
in
22:39
something
22:40
like
22:40
that
22:41
is
22:41
what
22:41
you
22:41
would
22:41
see
22:41
in
22:42
a
22:42
newer
22:42
one.
22:42
Or
22:42
something
22:43
of
22:43
that
22:43
price
22:43
point.
22:44
Because
22:44
last
22:44
thing
22:44
I
22:45
want
22:45
you
22:45
to
22:45
do
22:45
is
22:45
spend
22:45
the
22:45
money
22:46
on
22:46
a
22:46
kitchen
22:46
and
22:47
actually
22:47
get
22:47
less
22:48
value
22:48
out
22:48
of
22:48
it,
22:48
because
22:49
you
22:49
underspent
22:50
on
22:50
that.
22:50
Because
22:51
what
22:51
happens
22:51
is
22:51
if
22:51
you
22:52
think
22:52
about
22:52
value,
22:53
and
22:53
maybe
22:53
you're
22:53
not
22:54
thinking
22:54
about
22:54
selling
22:54
right
22:54
now,
22:55
but
22:55
maybe
22:55
ten
22:55
years
22:56
from
22:56
now,
22:56
you
22:56
are.
22:56
You
22:56
want
22:57
this
22:57
to
22:57
hold
22:57
up
22:58
and
22:58
you
22:58
don't
22:58
want
22:58
to
22:58
have
22:58
to
22:59
be
22:59
sitting
22:59
there
22:59
going,
22:59
if
22:59
I'd
23:00
just
23:00
spent
23:00
another
23:00
$3,000
23:01
on
23:01
cabinets,
23:02
this
23:02
would
23:02
last
23:03
another
23:03
decade.
23:04
This
23:04
is
23:04
where
23:04
you
23:05
can
23:05
make
23:05
those
23:05
mistakes.
23:05
So
23:06
just
23:06
spend
23:06
some
23:06
time
23:07
and
23:07
really
23:08
understand
23:08
that
23:09
whole
23:09
process
23:10
of
23:10
where
23:11
that
23:11
money
23:11
is
23:11
going
23:11
to
23:12
be
23:12
spent.
23:12
So
23:12
you
23:12
can
23:13
get
23:13
that
23:13
in
23:13
case
23:14
you
23:14
do
23:14
need
23:14
to
23:14
sell
23:14
down
23:14
the
23:15
road.
23:15
Or
23:16
if
23:16
you're
23:16
planning
23:16
on
23:16
this
23:17
holding
23:17
up,
23:17
maybe
23:18
you
23:18
spend
23:18
a
23:18
little
23:18
bit
23:18
more
23:19
to
23:19
get
23:19
the
23:19
most
23:19
durable
23:20
that
23:21
you
23:21
can
23:21
find,
23:21
and
23:22
that
23:22
way
23:22
you've
23:23
got
23:23
a
23:23
better
23:23
lasting
23:24
project.
23:25
So
23:25
really,
23:25
when
23:26
it
23:26
comes
23:26
down
23:26
to
23:26
doing
23:26
these
23:27
projects,
23:27
I
23:27
always
23:27
say
23:28
hire
23:28
out
23:28
a
23:28
designer.
23:29
Unless
23:29
you've
23:29
done
23:30
30
23:30
or
23:30
40
23:31
kitchens
23:31
yourself,
23:32
I
23:32
would
23:32
call
23:32
you
23:33
inexperienced.
23:34
And
23:34
there's
23:34
nothing
23:35
wrong
23:35
with
23:35
that.
23:36
You
23:36
just
23:36
haven't
23:36
had
23:36
enough
23:37
time
23:37
to
23:37
learn
23:38
all
23:38
those
23:39
little
23:39
gotcha
23:39
mistakes.
23:40
And
23:40
with
23:40
today's
23:41
computers
23:41
and
23:41
designing,
23:42
with
23:42
the
23:43
programs
23:43
out
23:43
there,
23:44
like
23:44
2020
23:45
design,
23:45
pro
23:46
kitchen,
23:46
those
23:46
kind
23:46
of
23:47
things,
23:47
these
23:47
are
23:48
programs
23:49
that
23:49
are
23:49
meant
23:49
to
23:49
do
23:50
this,
23:50
and
23:51
you
23:51
can
23:51
make
23:51
sure
23:52
and
23:52
get
23:52
those
23:52
things
23:53
designed
23:53
correctly.
23:54
Now,
23:54
one
23:54
other
23:55
tip
23:55
when
23:55
it
23:55
comes
23:55
to
23:55
design
23:56
here,
23:56
before
23:56
you
23:56
get
23:56
into
23:57
contracting
23:57
or
23:57
doing
23:58
it
23:58
yourself,
23:59
is
23:59
that
23:59
designer.
24:00
One
24:00
of
24:00
the
24:00
catches
24:01
that
24:01
you
24:01
always
24:01
have
24:02
to
24:02
work
24:02
through
24:03
as
24:04
a
24:04
designer
24:05
is
24:05
all
24:05
the
24:06
different
24:06
appliances
24:06
and
24:07
making
24:07
sure
24:07
that
24:08
corners
24:08
work
24:08
correctly,
24:09
that
24:09
you
24:09
can
24:09
open
24:09
up
24:09
a
24:10
drawer
24:10
in
24:11
a
24:11
corner,
24:11
it
24:11
doesn't
24:11
hit
24:11
the
24:12
front
24:12
of
24:12
the
24:12
dishwasher
24:13
or
24:13
the
24:13
range.
24:14
And
24:14
the
24:14
smaller
24:14
the
24:15
kitchen,
24:15
the
24:15
more
24:16
gotchas
24:16
you
24:16
have
24:16
to
24:16
worry
24:17
about.
24:17
So
24:18
the
24:18
bigger
24:18
ones
24:19
tend
24:19
to
24:19
have
24:19
a
24:19
little
24:19
bit
24:20
less
24:20
because
24:20
you
24:20
can
24:20
do
24:20
a
24:20
lot
24:21
more
24:21
with
24:21
it.
24:21
The
24:22
smaller
24:22
the
24:22
kitchen,
24:23
sometimes
24:24
the
24:24
more
24:24
challenging
24:25
when
24:25
it
24:25
comes
24:25
to
24:25
that.
24:26
All
24:26
right,
24:26
so
24:27
we've
24:27
been
24:27
talking
24:27
about
24:27
if
24:28
you're
24:28
going
24:28
to
24:28
diy
24:28
this
24:29
or
24:29
hire
24:29
a
24:29
contractor,
24:30
if
24:31
you're
24:31
going
24:31
to
24:31
be
24:31
hiring
24:31
a
24:31
contractor,
24:32
making
24:32
sure
24:33
that
24:33
your
24:33
designer
24:34
is
24:34
working
24:35
hand
24:35
in
24:35
hand
24:36
with
24:36
that
24:36
contractor
24:37
and
24:37
they
24:38
have
24:38
a
24:38
solid
24:38
relationship
24:39
is
24:39
going
24:39
to
24:40
be
24:40
key.
24:40
And
24:41
quite
24:41
frankly,
24:41
I
24:41
want
24:41
to
24:41
make
24:41
sure
24:42
that
24:42
they're
24:42
going
24:42
to
24:42
work
24:42
seamlessly
24:43
together
24:43
because
24:44
that
24:44
can
24:44
be
24:44
a
24:44
huge
24:45
step
24:45
in
24:45
the
24:45
process,
24:45
right?
24:46
To
24:46
make
24:46
sure
24:47
that
24:47
you've
24:47
got
24:47
that
24:48
perfectly
24:49
dialed
24:49
in.
24:50
They
24:50
are
24:50
a
24:51
team
24:51
and
24:51
they
24:52
are
24:52
on
24:52
your
24:52
team,
24:53
and
24:53
you
24:53
want
24:53
to
24:53
make
24:53
sure
24:54
that
24:54
everybody's
24:54
communicating.
24:55
If
24:56
there
24:56
is
24:56
conflict
24:57
between
24:57
the
24:57
designer
24:58
in
24:58
the
24:58
contractor
24:59
in
24:59
the
24:59
beginning,
25:00
I
25:00
can
25:01
promise
25:01
you
25:02
it's
25:02
going
25:02
to
25:02
get
25:03
worse.
25:03
So
25:04
if
25:04
those
25:04
two
25:04
have
25:05
worked
25:05
together,
25:05
there's
25:06
extra
25:06
bonus
25:06
points
25:07
here
25:07
for
25:07
a
25:08
good,
25:08
solid
25:09
working
25:09
relationship.
25:10
When
25:10
I
25:10
was
25:11
a
25:11
kitchen
25:11
and
25:11
bath
25:11
designer
25:12
doing
25:12
this
25:12
day
25:12
in
25:12
and
25:13
day
25:13
out,
25:13
six
25:14
days
25:14
a
25:14
week,
25:14
basically
25:15
what
25:15
I
25:16
was
25:16
doing,
25:16
and
25:16
I
25:16
was
25:16
working
25:17
for
25:17
four
25:17
or
25:17
five
25:18
different
25:18
contractors,
25:19
and
25:19
I
25:19
always
25:19
had
25:19
projects
25:20
rolling
25:20
through,
25:21
and
25:21
that's
25:21
who
25:22
generally
25:22
I
25:23
worked
25:23
with.
25:23
So
25:24
I
25:24
had
25:24
those
25:24
relationships,
25:25
those
25:26
were
25:26
going
25:26
well,
25:27
and
25:27
then
25:28
I
25:28
could
25:28
just
25:28
work
25:29
within
25:29
their
25:29
customer
25:30
base,
25:30
which
25:30
made
25:30
it
25:31
a
25:31
lot
25:31
late,
25:31
made
25:31
a
25:32
lot
25:32
of
25:32
sense
25:32
for
25:32
what
25:32
I
25:33
was
25:33
trying
25:33
to
25:33
do.
25:34
So
25:34
that's
25:35
way
25:35
I
25:36
could
25:36
really
25:36
work
25:37
with
25:37
these
25:37
contractors
25:38
and
25:38
make
25:38
sure
25:39
that
25:39
the
25:39
project
25:39
went
25:40
well
25:41
and
25:41
I
25:42
could
25:42
really
25:43
represent
25:43
them
25:43
in
25:44
their
25:44
business
25:44
as
25:44
well,
25:45
because
25:46
I
25:46
was
25:46
part
25:47
of
25:47
their
25:47
customer
25:48
service
25:48
solution,
25:49
from
25:49
getting
25:50
from
25:50
a
25:51
unfinished
25:52
remodel
25:53
all
25:53
the
25:53
way
25:53
to
25:54
somebody
25:54
moving
25:54
stuff
25:55
into
25:55
their
25:55
cabinets
25:56
and
25:56
enjoying
25:57
this
25:57
brand
25:57
new
25:57
kitchen.
25:58
So
25:59
that's
25:59
a
25:59
really
26:00
big
26:00
one
26:00
right
26:00
there.
26:01
Now,
26:01
if
26:01
you're
26:01
going
26:01
to
26:01
be
26:02
doing
26:02
this
26:02
as
26:02
a
26:02
DIY
26:03
project,
26:04
I
26:04
still
26:04
think
26:04
you
26:05
should
26:05
have
26:05
that
26:05
designer
26:06
on
26:06
retainer
26:06
so
26:07
you
26:07
can
26:07
walk
26:07
through
26:07
that
26:08
process,
26:08
you
26:08
can
26:09
get
26:09
those
26:09
questions
26:10
answered.
26:11
And
26:11
there
26:11
are
26:11
so
26:12
many
26:12
things
26:12
that
26:12
can
26:13
go
26:13
wrong
26:13
in
26:13
this.
26:13
And
26:14
this
26:14
is
26:14
why
26:14
I
26:14
wanted
26:14
to
26:14
talk
26:14
about
26:15
this
26:15
for
26:15
a
26:15
minute
26:15
here.
26:15
Because
26:16
when
26:16
you
26:16
think
26:17
about
26:17
all
26:17
the
26:17
updating
26:18
that
26:18
you
26:18
have
26:18
to
26:18
do,
26:18
if
26:18
you
26:19
do
26:19
a
26:19
kitchen
26:19
model,
26:20
in
26:20
many
26:20
cases
26:20
you're
26:21
doing
26:21
an
26:21
extra
26:21
three
26:22
or
26:22
four,
26:22
five
26:23
electric
26:23
circuits
26:23
in
26:24
there.
26:24
Maybe
26:24
you've
26:25
got
26:25
different
26:25
plumbing.
26:26
Maybe
26:26
you're
26:26
going
26:26
from
26:27
a
26:27
range,
26:28
which
26:28
is
26:28
the
26:29
stove
26:29
oven
26:30
built
26:30
into
26:30
the
26:30
same
26:31
thing,
26:31
to
26:32
a
26:32
cooktop
26:33
with
26:33
double
26:33
ovens
26:34
or
26:34
anything
26:34
else,
26:34
you've
26:35
got
26:35
a
26:35
lot
26:35
of
26:35
things
26:36
going
26:36
on.
26:37
And
26:37
of
26:37
course,
26:37
you
26:38
want
26:38
to
26:38
redesign
26:39
that
26:39
lighting,
26:39
that
26:40
lighting
26:40
after
26:41
about
26:41
ten
26:41
years
26:41
ago,
26:41
if
26:42
you've
26:42
got
26:42
those
26:42
big
26:43
six
26:43
inch
26:43
can
26:43
lights
26:44
in
26:44
there,
26:44
time
26:44
to
26:45
tear
26:45
them
26:45
out,
26:45
put
26:45
in
26:45
something
26:46
that's
26:46
much
26:47
more
26:47
visually
26:47
appealing,
26:48
and
26:48
it'll
26:48
give
26:49
you
26:49
a
26:49
better
26:49
workspace.
26:50
So
26:50
going
26:51
down
26:51
to
26:51
maybe
26:51
a
26:51
two
26:52
inch
26:52
light
26:52
and
26:52
putting
26:53
a
26:53
few
26:53
more
26:53
of
26:53
them
26:54
in
26:54
there,
26:54
as
26:54
far
26:54
as
26:54
a
26:54
recessed
26:55
light,
26:55
really
26:56
changes
26:56
how
26:56
that
26:57
look
26:57
of
26:57
the
26:57
kitchen
26:58
is.
26:58
And
26:59
you
26:59
can
26:59
get
26:59
that
26:59
1990s
27:00
six
27:01
inch
27:01
can
27:01
light
27:01
look
27:02
out
27:02
of
27:02
that
27:02
space,
27:03
which
27:03
is
27:04
going
27:04
to
27:04
give
27:04
you
27:04
a
27:04
much
27:04
more
27:05
modern
27:05
and
27:06
updated
27:07
look.
27:07
And
27:08
it's
27:08
really
27:08
clean
27:09
that
27:09
way.
27:09
When
27:09
you
27:09
can't
27:10
see
27:10
where
27:10
that
27:10
light
27:10
is
27:10
really
27:11
coming
27:11
from,
27:11
versus
27:12
having
27:12
these
27:12
big
27:13
sunspots
27:13
on
27:13
the
27:14
roof
27:14
that
27:14
you
27:14
see
27:14
in
27:14
the
27:14
ceiling
27:15
in
27:15
there?
27:15
It's
27:16
a
27:16
really
27:16
big
27:17
difference
27:17
as
27:17
far
27:17
as
27:18
how
27:18
that
27:18
looks
27:19
and
27:19
the
27:19
light
27:19
that
27:19
you
27:20
give
27:20
there.
27:20
So
27:21
it's
27:21
less
27:21
distracting.
27:22
I
27:22
think
27:22
it
27:23
looks
27:23
really
27:23
beautiful,
27:24
and
27:24
it's
27:24
something
27:24
that
27:25
goes
27:25
a
27:26
big
27:26
way
27:26
to
27:27
having
27:27
a
27:27
completed
27:28
project.
27:29
Now,
27:29
the
27:29
thing
27:29
is,
27:29
if
27:30
you're
27:30
doing
27:30
this
27:30
as
27:30
a
27:30
DIY
27:31
project,
27:31
my
27:32
best
27:32
advice
27:32
to
27:32
you
27:32
is
27:33
know
27:33
your
27:33
skills,
27:34
know
27:34
your
27:34
work
27:34
schedule
27:35
and
27:35
how
27:36
you
27:36
want
27:36
to
27:36
have
27:36
it
27:36
done.
27:36
Maybe
27:37
you're
27:37
going
27:37
to
27:37
be
27:37
the
27:38
general
27:38
contractor
27:39
and
27:39
bring
27:39
in
27:40
a
27:40
cabin
27:40
installer,
27:41
an
27:41
electrician,
27:41
a
27:42
plumber.
27:42
Somebody
27:43
did
27:43
the
27:43
countertop,
27:43
somebody
27:44
do
27:44
the
27:44
tile.
27:44
You're
27:44
going
27:44
to
27:45
manage
27:45
that.
27:45
Just
27:45
keep
27:45
in
27:46
mind,
27:46
when
27:46
you're
27:46
managing
27:46
this,
27:47
when
27:47
you
27:47
are
27:48
taking
27:48
care
27:48
of
27:48
this
27:49
project
27:49
during
27:50
your
27:50
workday,
27:50
there's
27:51
going
27:51
to
27:51
be
27:51
a
27:51
lot
27:51
of
27:51
questions
27:52
because
27:52
they're
27:52
working
27:52
at
27:52
that
27:53
same
27:53
time.
27:53
So
27:54
unless
27:54
you're
27:54
working
27:54
from
27:55
home,
27:55
unless
27:56
you're
27:56
a
27:56
small
27:56
business
27:57
person,
27:57
this
27:58
could
27:58
be
27:58
a
27:58
big
27:59
problem
27:59
for
27:59
you
27:59
and
27:59
your
28:00
schedule,
28:00
and
28:01
that's
28:01
where
28:01
things
28:01
can
28:01
go
28:02
sideways.
28:02
So
28:03
just
28:03
make
28:03
sure
28:03
that
28:04
you're
28:04
available
28:05
during
28:05
those
28:05
times
28:06
or
28:06
generally
28:07
available
28:07
if
28:07
you're
28:07
gone
28:07
an
28:08
hour
28:08
here,
28:08
gone
28:08
hour
28:08
there.
28:09
But
28:09
I.
28:09
You
28:09
need
28:09
to
28:10
be
28:10
available
28:10
for
28:10
those
28:11
questions.
28:11
And
28:12
when
28:12
you
28:13
work
28:13
these
28:13
details
28:14
out,
28:14
who's
28:14
running
28:14
to
28:14
get
28:14
parts?
28:15
If
28:15
you
28:15
bought
28:15
a
28:15
faucet
28:16
and
28:17
that
28:17
plumber's
28:17
putting
28:18
it
28:18
in
28:18
and
28:18
they
28:19
gave
28:19
you
28:19
the
28:19
wrong
28:19
one
28:20
or
28:20
didn't
28:20
give
28:20
you
28:20
enough
28:20
parts,
28:21
are
28:21
you
28:21
running
28:21
or
28:22
are
28:22
you
28:22
paying
28:22
for
28:22
that
28:22
plumber
28:23
to
28:23
go
28:23
do
28:23
it,
28:24
that
28:24
makes
28:24
a
28:25
difference
28:25
because
28:26
that
28:26
can
28:26
cost
28:26
you
28:27
some
28:27
additional
28:27
money,
28:27
especially
28:28
if
28:28
you're
28:28
playing
28:29
for
28:29
that
28:29
plumber
28:30
to
28:30
be
28:30
basically
28:31
running
28:31
out,
28:32
doing
28:32
your
28:32
errand
28:33
running
28:33
for
28:33
you.
28:34
That
28:34
can
28:34
get
28:34
expensive
28:35
really
28:35
quick.
28:36
Which
28:36
is
28:36
why
28:37
many
28:37
times
28:37
I
28:38
like
28:38
to
28:38
let
28:38
the
28:38
trees
28:39
buy
28:39
their
28:39
own
28:39
materials.
28:40
The
28:40
electrician
28:41
brings
28:41
the
28:41
outlets
28:42
in,
28:42
the
28:43
plumber
28:43
brings
28:43
in
28:43
the
28:43
plumbing
28:44
parts.
28:45
The
28:45
contractor
28:46
buys
28:46
the
28:46
stuff
28:47
because
28:47
it's
28:47
all
28:47
under
28:48
them.
28:48
And
28:48
guess
28:48
what?
28:49
If
28:49
something's
28:49
defective
28:50
or
28:50
wrong,
28:50
generally
28:51
they
28:51
have
28:51
to
28:51
cover
28:52
that
28:52
and
28:52
they
28:52
have
28:52
to
28:52
go
28:52
do
28:53
that
28:53
on
28:53
their
28:53
time,
28:54
not
28:55
you,
28:55
that
28:56
you
28:56
have
28:56
to
28:56
go
28:56
run
28:56
and
28:57
get
28:57
it
28:57
and
28:57
they're
28:57
waiting
28:58
for
28:58
you
28:58
and
28:58
charging
28:59
for
28:59
you
28:59
because
29:00
they
29:00
didn't
29:00
buy
29:00
it.
29:01
So
29:01
that
29:01
little
29:01
bit
29:01
more
29:02
of
29:02
them
29:02
marking
29:02
it
29:02
up
29:03
could
29:03
save
29:03
you
29:04
a
29:04
lot
29:05
in
29:05
the
29:05
future.
29:06
All
29:06
right,
29:06
we
29:06
come
29:06
back.
29:07
I've
29:07
got
29:07
more
29:08
here,
29:08
and
29:08
we're
29:08
gonna
29:08
talk
29:08
about
29:09
project
29:09
management
29:10
and
29:10
my
29:10
tricks
29:11
to
29:11
managing
29:11
a
29:12
kitchen
29:13
remodeling
29:13
project.
29:14
We'll
29:14
do
29:15
that
29:15
just
29:15
as
29:15
soon
29:15
as
29:16
around
29:16
the
29:16
house
29:16
returns.
29:29
All
29:30
right,
29:33
welcome
29:34
back
29:34
to
29:34
the
29:34
around
29:35
the
29:35
house
29:35
show
29:35
the
29:36
next
29:36
generation
29:36
of
29:37
home
29:37
improvement.
29:37
Thanks
29:38
for
29:38
joining
29:38
me
29:38
today.
29:39
I'm
29:39
Eric
29:39
G.
29:39
We've
29:40
been
29:40
talking
29:40
about
29:40
my
29:40
tips
29:41
for
29:41
designing
29:41
a
29:42
kitchen
29:42
and
29:43
getting
29:43
that
29:43
project
29:44
finished.
29:44
It
29:44
doesn't
29:44
matter
29:44
if
29:45
you're
29:45
hiring
29:45
the
29:45
best
29:45
contractors
29:46
in
29:46
the
29:46
world
29:46
out
29:46
there
29:47
or
29:47
this
29:47
is
29:48
your
29:48
first
29:48
big
29:48
diy
29:49
project.
29:50
I
29:50
am
29:50
here
29:51
to
29:51
help
29:51
you
29:51
walk
29:52
through
29:52
this
29:52
process
29:52
from
29:53
start
29:53
to
29:53
finish.
29:54
And
29:54
of
29:54
course,
29:54
I've
29:54
been
29:55
a
29:55
kitchen
29:55
and
29:55
bath
29:55
designer
29:56
for
29:56
over
29:56
30
29:57
years
29:57
now.
29:57
So
29:58
I've
29:58
got
29:58
a
29:58
lot
29:58
of
29:58
experience
29:59
in
29:59
trying
30:00
to
30:00
make
30:00
this
30:00
project
30:01
work
30:01
and
30:02
come
30:02
together
30:03
every
30:03
single
30:04
time
30:04
and
30:05
beautifully.
30:06
So
30:06
here
30:06
are
30:06
some
30:06
of
30:07
my
30:07
tips
30:07
on
30:07
the
30:07
project
30:08
management
30:08
side.
30:09
We've
30:09
already
30:09
talked
30:09
about
30:09
materials
30:10
and
30:11
the
30:11
importance
30:11
of
30:11
design
30:12
earlier
30:12
in
30:12
the
30:13
show.
30:13
And
30:13
if
30:14
you're
30:14
catching
30:14
us
30:14
on
30:14
the
30:15
radio,
30:15
don't
30:15
worry,
30:15
you
30:15
can
30:16
always
30:16
go
30:16
back
30:16
and
30:16
catch
30:16
the
30:17
podcast
30:17
on
30:18
your
30:18
favorite
30:18
podcast
30:19
player.
30:19
If
30:19
you're
30:19
just
30:20
joining
30:20
us,
30:21
just
30:21
listen
30:21
for
30:22
around
30:22
the
30:22
house
30:22
show.
30:23
All
30:23
right,
30:23
so
30:23
we've
30:23
been
30:24
talking
30:24
about
30:24
project
30:24
management
30:25
here,
30:25
and
30:25
details
30:26
matter
30:26
for
30:27
this.
30:27
And
30:27
this
30:27
is
30:27
where
30:28
your
30:28
best
30:29
management
30:29
skills
30:30
really
30:30
have
30:30
to
30:30
come
30:30
into
30:31
place.
30:31
Now,
30:32
if
30:32
you're
30:32
going
30:32
to
30:32
be
30:33
managing
30:33
this
30:33
as
30:33
a
30:34
homeowner
30:34
and
30:35
you're
30:35
going
30:35
to
30:35
be
30:35
dealing
30:36
with
30:36
the
30:36
subcontractors,
30:37
this
30:38
is
30:38
where
30:38
experience
30:39
matters.
30:40
And
30:40
this
30:40
is
30:40
one
30:41
of
30:41
those
30:41
things
30:41
that
30:42
really
30:42
let
30:42
me
30:43
see
30:43
if
30:43
I
30:43
can
30:43
help
30:43
you
30:44
walk
30:44
through
30:44
that
30:45
process
30:45
of
30:46
wondering
30:46
if
30:46
you
30:46
can
30:47
project
30:47
manage
30:47
this
30:48
or
30:48
if
30:48
you're
30:48
better
30:49
just
30:49
hiring
30:49
a
30:49
general
30:49
contractor
30:50
that
30:51
does
30:51
this
30:51
day
30:52
in
30:52
and
30:52
day
30:52
out.
30:53
So
30:53
here's
30:54
the
30:54
thing,
30:54
and
30:54
this
30:54
is
30:54
what
30:54
you
30:55
run
30:55
into
30:55
when
30:55
you
30:56
try
30:56
to
30:56
general
30:56
manage
30:57
this
30:57
or
30:57
project
30:58
manage
30:58
this
30:59
yourself.
31:00
And
31:00
here's
31:00
the
31:00
problems
31:01
that
31:01
you're
31:01
running
31:01
to,
31:02
and
31:02
they
31:02
can
31:02
be
31:02
tough.
31:03
First
31:04
off,
31:04
when
31:04
you
31:04
are
31:05
a
31:05
general
31:05
contractor,
31:06
usually,
31:07
generally
31:08
you
31:08
have
31:08
your
31:09
favorite
31:09
subs
31:09
you
31:10
work
31:10
with.
31:10
These
31:11
are
31:11
the
31:11
people
31:11
that,
31:12
it's
31:12
your
31:12
favorite
31:13
electrician,
31:13
it's
31:13
your
31:14
favorite
31:14
plumber,
31:15
and
31:15
they
31:15
know
31:15
they're
31:16
doing
31:16
so
31:16
many
31:17
different
31:17
jobs
31:18
with
31:18
you
31:18
as
31:18
a
31:18
contractor.
31:19
And
31:19
so
31:20
when
31:20
they
31:20
say
31:20
they're
31:20
going
31:20
to
31:20
be
31:21
there
31:21
at
31:21
07:00
31:21
a.m.
31:21
on
31:21
a
31:22
Monday,
31:23
usually
31:23
they
31:23
try
31:24
to
31:24
be
31:24
there
31:24
at
31:24
07:00
31:24
a.m.
31:25
on
31:25
a
31:25
Monday
31:25
because
31:25
they
31:25
don't
31:25
want
31:26
to
31:26
lose
31:26
the
31:27
next
31:27
five
31:27
jobs.
31:28
The
31:29
problem
31:29
is
31:29
that
31:30
when
31:30
you're
31:30
the
31:30
homeowner,
31:31
and
31:31
this
31:31
is
31:31
unfortunate,
31:32
but
31:32
it's
31:32
just
31:33
the
31:33
way
31:33
that
31:33
it
31:33
works
31:34
out,
31:34
they
31:35
have
31:35
to
31:35
figure
31:35
out,
31:35
oh
31:35
my
31:36
gosh,
31:36
I'm
31:36
behind
31:36
on
31:36
this
31:37
project.
31:38
Do
31:38
I
31:38
make
31:38
the
31:39
general
31:40
contractor
31:40
mad?
31:41
That's
31:41
going
31:41
to
31:41
give
31:41
me
31:42
20%
31:42
of
31:42
my
31:42
business
31:43
or
31:43
do
31:44
I
31:44
make
31:44
the
31:44
homeowner
31:45
mad?
31:45
Who
31:46
probably
31:46
maybe
31:47
once,
31:48
if
31:48
not
31:48
twice,
31:49
ever
31:49
do
31:49
business
31:50
with
31:50
me
31:50
again?
31:51
That's
31:51
what
31:51
the
31:51
odds
31:51
are.
31:52
So
31:53
many
31:53
times
31:54
you
31:54
end
31:54
up
31:54
unfortunately
31:55
being
31:56
second
31:56
fiddle
31:56
for
31:57
this,
31:57
where
31:57
you
31:58
end
31:58
up
31:58
being
31:59
the
31:59
second
31:59
player
32:00
in
32:00
this.
32:00
So
32:01
what
32:01
happens
32:01
is
32:02
many
32:02
more
32:02
times
32:03
you're
32:03
going
32:03
to
32:03
have
32:03
that
32:04
electrician,
32:04
plumber
32:05
or
32:05
somebody
32:05
in
32:05
the
32:05
trades
32:06
going
32:07
to
32:07
show
32:07
up
32:08
and
32:08
they
32:08
got
32:08
stuck
32:08
going
32:09
to
32:09
another
32:09
job
32:09
site
32:10
because
32:10
they
32:10
need
32:10
to
32:11
keep
32:11
their
32:11
bread
32:11
and
32:11
butter
32:12
going.
32:12
And
32:12
it's
32:13
just
32:13
an
32:13
unfortunate
32:14
situation
32:15
with
32:15
the
32:15
shortage
32:16
of
32:16
trades
32:16
we
32:16
have
32:16
out
32:17
there,
32:17
you
32:17
don't
32:17
have
32:17
all
32:18
these
32:18
people
32:19
fighting
32:19
for
32:20
these
32:20
jobs
32:20
anymore
32:21
because
32:21
there's
32:21
just
32:22
not
32:22
enough
32:22
people
32:22
out
32:23
there.
32:23
So
32:24
that
32:24
shortage
32:25
of
32:25
trades
32:25
means
32:26
that
32:26
one,
32:27
you're
32:27
going
32:27
to
32:27
pay
32:27
more,
32:28
and
32:28
two,
32:29
you're
32:29
going
32:29
to
32:30
end
32:30
up
32:30
being
32:30
second
32:30
in
32:31
command
32:31
on
32:31
this
32:31
because
32:32
somebody
32:32
else
32:33
is
32:33
probably
32:34
giving
32:34
them
32:34
more
32:34
business
32:35
and
32:35
they're
32:36
unfortunately
32:36
going
32:37
to
32:37
give
32:37
them
32:37
the
32:37
first
32:38
shot
32:38
at
32:38
all
32:38
this
32:38
stuff.
32:39
So
32:39
their
32:39
schedule
32:40
might
32:40
matter
32:41
more
32:41
than
32:41
yours.
32:42
And
32:42
that's
32:42
unfortunate.
32:43
But
32:43
it's
32:44
one
32:44
thing
32:44
that
32:44
happens.
32:45
And
32:45
don't
32:46
shoot
32:46
the
32:46
messenger
32:46
here.
32:47
I'm
32:47
just
32:47
trying
32:47
to
32:47
be
32:47
realistic
32:48
with
32:48
the
32:48
schedule.
32:49
Now
32:50
here's
32:50
the
32:50
thing
32:50
with
32:51
the
32:51
schedule.
32:51
As
32:51
you're
32:52
pulling
32:52
building
32:52
permits
32:53
in
32:53
doing
32:54
this
32:54
many
32:55
times,
32:55
depending
32:55
on
32:56
your
32:56
area,
32:56
it
32:57
can
32:57
take
32:57
days
32:58
for
32:58
them
32:58
to
32:58
show
32:58
up
32:59
for
32:59
that
32:59
next
33:00
inspection.
33:00
So
33:01
if
33:01
you're
33:01
waiting
33:01
for
33:01
rough
33:02
and
33:02
inspection
33:02
for
33:03
plumbing
33:04
or
33:04
you've
33:04
got
33:05
electrical
33:05
inspection
33:06
for
33:06
rough
33:06
in
33:07
or
33:07
even
33:07
final,
33:08
it
33:08
could
33:09
take
33:09
days
33:09
for
33:09
them
33:09
to
33:10
come
33:10
out
33:10
for
33:10
that.
33:10
So
33:11
make
33:11
sure
33:11
you
33:11
understand
33:12
what
33:12
the
33:12
wait
33:13
times
33:13
are
33:13
in
33:13
your
33:13
area.
33:14
A
33:14
lot
33:14
of
33:15
cities
33:15
have
33:15
cut
33:15
back
33:16
in
33:16
the
33:16
building
33:16
code
33:16
departments.
33:17
So
33:17
even
33:18
though
33:18
there
33:18
might
33:18
be
33:18
less
33:19
construction
33:19
going
33:20
out
33:20
there,
33:21
there
33:21
ends
33:21
up
33:21
being
33:22
a
33:22
lot
33:22
more
33:22
of
33:23
a
33:23
backlog
33:23
because
33:24
theres
33:24
less
33:24
building
33:25
permits
33:25
for
33:26
big
33:26
homes
33:26
and
33:27
that
33:27
means
33:27
less
33:28
people
33:28
in
33:28
the
33:28
building
33:28
department
33:29
many
33:29
times.
33:29
Because
33:30
many
33:30
times
33:31
those
33:31
building
33:31
fees
33:32
are
33:32
what
33:33
keep
33:33
that
33:33
building
33:33
department
33:34
running.
33:34
And
33:35
when
33:35
the
33:35
housing
33:36
crisis
33:36
that
33:36
were
33:37
in
33:37
right
33:37
now
33:37
with
33:37
high
33:37
interest
33:38
rates
33:38
and
33:38
it
33:39
slows
33:39
down
33:39
building,
33:40
it
33:40
usually
33:41
defunds
33:41
those
33:41
guys
33:42
a
33:42
little
33:42
bit.
33:42
And
33:42
that
33:43
can
33:43
be
33:43
a
33:43
problem.
33:44
And
33:44
then
33:44
the
33:44
other
33:44
thing
33:45
is
33:45
making
33:45
sure
33:45
that
33:46
you
33:46
can
33:46
manage
33:46
it
33:46
with
33:46
your
33:47
current
33:47
schedule.
33:48
And
33:48
this
33:48
is
33:48
tough.
33:49
I
33:49
struggle
33:50
with
33:50
this
33:50
every
33:51
single
33:51
week.
33:52
And
33:52
I'll
33:52
be
33:52
the
33:53
first
33:53
to
33:53
say
33:53
that
33:54
staying
33:54
on
33:54
schedule
33:55
with
33:55
projects
33:56
is
33:56
tough.
33:57
And
33:57
I
33:57
put
33:57
a
33:58
lot
33:58
of
33:58
hours
33:58
in
33:58
between
33:58
the
33:59
radio
33:59
show
33:59
and
33:59
the
33:59
tv
33:59
show,
34:00
60
34:00
or
34:01
70
34:01
a
34:01
week
34:01
at
34:02
least
34:02
putting
34:03
stuff
34:03
in.
34:04
And
34:04
you
34:04
know,
34:04
something
34:05
that
34:05
just
34:05
plan
34:06
gets
34:06
exhausting.
34:06
So
34:07
give
34:07
yourself
34:07
some
34:08
breaks
34:08
in
34:08
the
34:08
schedule
34:09
and
34:09
give
34:10
yourself
34:10
some
34:10
time.
34:10
If
34:11
you
34:11
think
34:11
that
34:11
you're
34:11
going
34:11
to
34:11
need
34:11
a
34:12
inspection
34:12
during
34:13
this
34:13
week,
34:14
give
34:14
yourself
34:14
two
34:14
or
34:15
three
34:15
days.
34:15
And
34:16
if
34:16
you
34:16
have
34:16
a
34:16
chance
34:16
to
34:16
get
34:17
ahead,
34:17
and
34:18
that'll
34:18
be
34:18
a
34:18
lot
34:19
easier
34:19
on
34:19
the
34:19
schedule
34:20
because
34:20
then
34:20
you've
34:21
got
34:21
some
34:21
pad
34:21
built
34:22
in
34:22
there
34:22
for
34:22
those
34:23
things
34:23
that
34:23
happen.
34:24
And
34:24
that's
34:24
a
34:24
key.
34:25
Now
34:25
here's
34:26
one
34:26
of
34:26
my
34:26
golden
34:27
rules
34:27
for
34:27
starting
34:27
a
34:28
kitchen
34:28
remodel
34:28
project.
34:29
That
34:29
before
34:30
you
34:30
even
34:30
start
34:31
as
34:31
a
34:31
project
34:32
manager,
34:33
I
34:33
want
34:33
to
34:33
make
34:34
sure
34:34
that
34:34
you
34:34
have
34:35
all
34:35
the
34:35
materials
34:36
on
34:36
the
34:37
job
34:37
site,
34:37
or
34:38
at
34:38
least
34:38
in
34:38
the
34:38
warehouse
34:39
with
34:39
your
34:40
name
34:40
on
34:40
it
34:40
that's
34:41
sold
34:42
before
34:42
you
34:42
start
34:43
demo
34:43
day.
34:44
Those
34:44
cabinets
34:45
need
34:45
to
34:45
be
34:45
in,
34:46
they
34:46
need
34:46
to
34:46
be
34:46
sitting
34:46
in
34:46
a
34:47
warehouse.
34:47
They
34:47
need
34:48
to
34:48
be
34:48
built.
34:49
They
34:49
need
34:49
to
34:49
be
34:49
ready
34:49
to
34:50
go.
34:50
You
34:51
ready
34:51
to
34:51
ship
34:51
those
34:52
things
34:52
out?
34:53
They
34:53
are
34:53
down
34:53
the
34:54
street
34:54
kind
34:54
of
34:54
thing
34:55
or
34:55
in
34:56
your
34:56
garage.
34:57
So
34:57
that's
34:57
one
34:58
thing
34:58
right
34:58
there.
34:59
Two,
34:59
I
34:59
want
34:59
to
34:59
make
35:00
sure
35:00
that
35:00
your,
35:00
your
35:01
stone
35:01
countertops,
35:02
granite
35:02
laminate,
35:03
whatever
35:03
it
35:03
is,
35:04
has
35:05
that
35:05
been
35:05
picked
35:05
out?
35:05
Is
35:06
it
35:06
sitting
35:06
there?
35:06
Is
35:06
it
35:06
ready
35:07
to
35:07
go?
35:07
Are
35:07
your
35:08
plumbing
35:08
fixtures,
35:09
appliances,
35:10
all
35:10
of
35:10
those
35:11
things
35:11
ready
35:11
to
35:11
rock?
35:12
Because
35:12
here's
35:13
what
35:13
happens.
35:13
You
35:13
think,
35:13
oh,
35:13
it's
35:14
only
35:14
going
35:14
to
35:14
take
35:14
a
35:14
couple
35:14
of
35:15
weeks.
35:15
Something
35:15
gets
35:15
on
35:15
backorder.
35:17
Three
35:17
times
35:18
in
35:18
my
35:18
30
35:18
year
35:19
career
35:19
have
35:20
I
35:20
had
35:20
cabinet
35:21
trucks
35:21
get
35:22
into
35:22
accidents
35:23
where
35:23
they
35:23
flip
35:23
over
35:24
on
35:24
their
35:24
side
35:25
or
35:25
the
35:26
containers
35:26
that
35:26
they
35:26
were
35:27
in
35:27
and
35:28
they
35:28
are
35:28
lost
35:29
and
35:29
have
35:29
to
35:29
be
35:30
built.
35:30
And
35:31
that
35:31
took
35:31
another
35:32
six
35:32
to
35:33
ten
35:33
weeks
35:33
for
35:33
that
35:34
to
35:34
happen.
35:35
So
35:35
I
35:36
don't
35:36
want
35:36
to
35:36
see
35:36
you
35:36
have
35:36
a
35:37
stall
35:37
of
35:37
your
35:37
project
35:38
for
35:38
a
35:38
couple
35:38
months
35:39
because
35:39
the
35:39
materials
35:40
were
35:40
not
35:40
available
35:41
even
35:41
though
35:41
you
35:42
thought
35:42
they
35:42
were.
35:43
Making
35:44
sure
35:44
that
35:44
those
35:44
things
35:44
are
35:45
in
35:45
and
35:45
ready
35:45
to
35:46
rock
35:46
is
35:46
important.
35:47
And
35:47
appliances
35:48
that
35:48
can
35:48
be
35:48
tough,
35:49
too,
35:49
they
35:49
could
35:50
be
35:50
in
35:50
stock
35:50
down
35:50
there
35:51
and
35:51
all
35:51
of
35:51
a
35:51
sudden
35:51
some
35:51
builder
35:52
comes
35:52
in
35:52
and
35:52
buys
35:52
a
35:53
dozen
35:53
of
35:53
them.
35:53
And
35:54
yours
35:54
went
35:54
out
35:54
the
35:55
door.
35:55
So
35:56
I
35:56
would
35:56
much
35:57
rather
35:57
see
35:57
you
35:58
get
35:58
that
35:59
stuff
35:59
loaded
35:59
up
35:59
in
35:59
the
36:00
garage
36:00
or
36:00
a
36:00
container
36:01
out
36:01
front
36:02
or
36:02
whatever
36:02
your
36:03
storage
36:03
method
36:03
is,
36:04
and
36:04
be
36:05
ready
36:05
to
36:05
go
36:06
and
36:06
then
36:06
start
36:07
the
36:07
project,
36:08
because
36:08
thats
36:08
going
36:08
to
36:08
stop
36:09
so
36:09
many
36:09
different
36:09
headaches
36:10
from
36:10
you.
36:11
And
36:11
thats
36:11
just
36:11
going
36:11
to
36:11
be
36:12
one
36:12
of
36:12
the
36:12
things
36:12
that
36:13
really
36:13
makes
36:13
that
36:14
difference
36:14
from
36:15
having
36:15
those
36:16
huge
36:16
delays.
36:17
That
36:17
can
36:17
be
36:17
a
36:17
problem.
36:18
And
36:18
then
36:18
make
36:19
sure
36:19
if
36:19
its
36:19
an
36:19
older
36:19
house,
36:20
are
36:20
you
36:20
going
36:20
to
36:20
find
36:21
anything
36:21
strange
36:21
when
36:22
you
36:22
open
36:22
up
36:22
a
36:22
wall?
36:23
Is
36:23
there
36:23
going
36:23
to
36:23
be
36:24
bigger
36:24
issues?
36:24
Just
36:25
give
36:25
yourself
36:25
some
36:25
pad
36:26
in
36:26
there
36:26
to
36:26
make
36:26
sure
36:27
you
36:27
can
36:27
get
36:27
it
36:27
all
36:27
done.
36:28
Now
36:28
the
36:28
last
36:29
thing
36:29
here
36:29
is
36:29
I
36:29
want
36:29
to
36:29
make
36:30
sure.
36:30
That
36:30
we
36:30
talk
36:30
about,
36:31
and
36:31
this
36:31
is
36:31
the
36:32
longest
36:32
part
36:32
of
36:32
it.
36:33
It's
36:33
that
36:34
last
36:34
20
36:34
yards
36:35
of
36:35
the
36:35
field,
36:36
that
36:36
last
36:37
little
36:37
bit,
36:37
trying
36:38
to
36:38
get
36:38
to
36:38
the
36:38
end
36:38
zone.
36:39
That
36:39
stuff
36:40
can
36:40
take
36:41
time,
36:42
and
36:42
it
36:42
takes
36:43
a
36:43
lot
36:43
of
36:43
time
36:44
getting
36:44
that
36:45
stuff
36:45
where
36:45
the
36:45
tile
36:46
is
36:46
dialed
36:46
in
36:47
and
36:47
the
36:47
trim
36:47
is
36:48
on
36:48
and
36:48
the
36:49
knobs
36:49
and
36:49
handles
36:49
are
36:50
in
36:50
place.
36:50
All
36:51
of
36:51
those
36:51
little
36:51
details,
36:52
including
36:53
the
36:53
warranty
36:53
items,
36:54
take
36:55
a
36:55
bit
36:55
of
36:55
time,
36:56
and
36:56
it
36:56
just
36:56
does.
36:57
And
36:57
there'll
36:57
be
36:58
weeks
36:58
that
36:58
you're
36:58
like,
36:58
man,
36:58
we're
36:59
spinning
36:59
our
36:59
wheels.
37:00
We're
37:00
not
37:00
getting
37:00
anywhere.
37:01
And
37:02
don't
37:02
let
37:02
that
37:03
frustration
37:03
get
37:03
to
37:04
you,
37:04
because
37:04
it's
37:05
just
37:05
part
37:05
of
37:05
this
37:05
process.
37:06
Now,
37:07
one
37:07
of
37:07
the
37:07
tricks
37:07
that
37:07
I
37:07
like
37:08
to
37:08
do
37:08
once
37:09
this
37:09
project
37:09
is
37:09
all
37:10
said
37:10
and
37:10
done,
37:11
and
37:11
this
37:11
is
37:11
something
37:11
I've
37:11
been
37:12
telling
37:12
contractors
37:13
for
37:13
almost,
37:14
nearly
37:14
a
37:14
decade
37:15
now,
37:16
put
37:16
in
37:16
the
37:16
budget
37:17
for
37:17
a
37:18
furniture
37:18
repair
37:19
person
37:19
to
37:20
come
37:20
out
37:20
and
37:21
touch
37:21
everything
37:22
up.
37:23
Maybe
37:23
there's
37:23
a
37:23
little
37:24
scuff
37:24
from
37:24
a
37:24
tool
37:25
belt.
37:26
Maybe
37:26
there's
37:26
a
37:26
little
37:27
cut
37:27
that
37:27
maybe
37:28
isn't
37:28
as
37:28
tight
37:28
as
37:28
you
37:28
want
37:29
it
37:29
to
37:29
be
37:29
on
37:29
the
37:29
crown
37:29
molding.
37:30
These
37:31
guys
37:31
can
37:31
come
37:31
in,
37:32
and
37:32
this
37:33
is
37:33
where
37:33
the
37:33
artisan
37:34
comes
37:34
into
37:34
play.
37:35
I
37:35
have
37:36
had
37:36
furniture
37:36
repair
37:37
people
37:37
come
37:37
in
37:38
and
37:38
touch
37:38
up
37:39
wood
37:39
doors
37:40
that
37:40
were
37:40
misdrilled.
37:41
And
37:42
it
37:42
was
37:42
going
37:42
to
37:42
take
37:43
a
37:43
microscope
37:44
to
37:44
see
37:44
that
37:44
somebody
37:44
touched
37:45
this
37:45
up.
37:46
They
37:46
came
37:46
in
37:46
there,
37:47
they
37:47
airbrushed
37:48
it,
37:48
they
37:48
added
37:48
the
37:49
grain.
37:49
It
37:50
looked
37:50
absolutely
37:51
gorgeous.
37:51
And
37:53
a
37:53
lot
37:53
of
37:53
sins
37:54
have
37:54
been
37:54
covered
37:54
up
37:55
by
37:55
somebody
37:56
coming
37:56
in
37:57
doing
37:57
that
37:57
furniture
37:58
touch
37:58
up
37:58
at
37:59
the
37:59
end
37:59
of
37:59
a
37:59
project.
38:00
I
38:00
don't
38:00
care
38:00
if
38:00
you're
38:00
the
38:01
homeowner,
38:01
you're
38:02
the
38:02
builder,
38:02
you're
38:02
the
38:03
remodeler.
38:03
This
38:04
is
38:04
one
38:04
of
38:04
those
38:04
things
38:05
that
38:05
gets
38:05
you
38:05
from
38:05
95%
38:06
to
38:06
100%,
38:07
and
38:08
it
38:08
can
38:08
make
38:08
everything
38:09
look
38:09
gorgeous,
38:10
especially
38:11
if
38:11
there's
38:11
a
38:11
little
38:11
ding
38:12
or
38:12
a
38:12
dent
38:12
out
38:12
there.
38:13
Sometimes
38:13
it's
38:13
better
38:14
to
38:15
do
38:15
that,
38:15
because
38:15
here's
38:16
what
38:16
happens.
38:16
If
38:16
you've
38:16
ordered
38:17
cabinets
38:18
and
38:18
they've
38:18
been
38:18
sitting
38:19
out
38:19
in
38:19
the
38:19
job
38:19
site
38:19
for
38:20
six
38:20
weeks,
38:20
maybe
38:20
it's
38:21
cherry.
38:21
The
38:22
new
38:22
one
38:22
shows
38:22
up,
38:23
and
38:23
it's
38:23
lighter
38:24
cherry
38:24
because
38:24
it's
38:24
not
38:25
as
38:25
old.
38:25
And
38:26
now
38:26
you've
38:26
got
38:26
to
38:26
sit
38:27
there
38:27
and
38:27
let
38:28
that
38:28
catch
38:28
up.
38:28
Now,
38:29
all
38:29
these
38:29
woods
38:30
will
38:30
catch
38:30
up
38:31
many
38:31
times,
38:32
but
38:32
where
38:32
you'll
38:32
run
38:32
into
38:33
problems
38:33
is
38:33
if
38:33
it's
38:34
maple
38:34
or
38:34
something
38:35
like
38:35
that
38:35
in
38:35
a
38:35
lighter
38:35
tone.
38:36
That
38:37
wood
38:37
could
38:37
be
38:38
a
38:38
different
38:38
tone
38:38
than
38:39
everything
38:39
else,
38:39
and
38:40
all
38:40
of
38:40
a
38:40
sudden,
38:40
that
38:40
brand
38:41
new
38:41
door
38:42
sticks
38:42
out
38:42
like
38:43
a
38:43
sore
38:43
thumb.
38:44
And
38:44
that
38:45
can
38:45
be
38:45
a
38:45
massive
38:46
issue,
38:46
and
38:47
that
38:47
can
38:47
get
38:47
really
38:47
expensive.
38:48
When
38:48
you're
38:48
redoing
38:49
doors
38:49
and
38:49
reordering
38:50
doors.
38:51
And
38:51
then
38:51
the
38:51
other
38:51
thing
38:52
is
38:52
to
38:52
make
38:52
sure
38:53
that
38:53
your
38:53
expectations
38:55
are
38:55
in
38:55
line.
38:56
And
38:56
I
38:56
see
38:57
this
38:57
especially
38:58
with
38:59
factory
38:59
painted
39:00
cabinets,
39:00
or
39:00
even
39:01
painted
39:01
cabinets
39:01
for
39:02
that
39:02
matter.
39:03
Do
39:03
not
39:03
expect
39:04
unless
39:04
you
39:04
are
39:04
paying
39:05
for
39:06
something
39:06
to
39:06
be
39:06
imported
39:07
in
39:08
or
39:08
you
39:08
are
39:09
paying
39:09
hundreds
39:09
of
39:10
thousands
39:10
of
39:10
dollars
39:11
for
39:11
this
39:11
cabinet
39:11
package,
39:12
do
39:13
not
39:13
expect
39:14
that
39:14
finish
39:14
on
39:15
those
39:15
cabinets
39:16
is
39:16
going
39:16
to
39:16
look
39:16
like
39:16
it
39:17
came
39:17
off
39:17
the
39:17
line
39:18
at
39:18
Mercedes
39:18
Benz.
39:19
Don't
39:19
expect
39:20
it.
39:20
Painted
39:21
is
39:21
good.
39:22
It
39:22
is
39:22
still
39:23
mother
39:23
nature
39:24
and
39:24
wood
39:24
down
39:25
below
39:25
it,
39:25
so
39:26
wood
39:26
will
39:26
move.
39:27
If
39:27
you
39:27
have
39:27
mitered
39:28
corner
39:28
doors,
39:29
you
39:29
will
39:29
see
39:29
cracks
39:30
where
39:31
every
39:31
wood
39:31
seam
39:32
is
39:32
on
39:32
that
39:32
face
39:33
frame
39:34
or
39:34
on
39:34
the
39:35
style
39:35
and
39:35
rail
39:35
on
39:35
the
39:36
doors.
39:36
All
39:36
of
39:37
those
39:37
things
39:38
really
39:38
show
39:39
up
39:39
in
39:39
time.
39:40
It's
39:40
okay.
39:41
Every
39:42
kitchen
39:42
does
39:42
it
39:43
because
39:43
those
39:44
woods

39:52
budget

39:58
home
39:58

39:59
it
40:00
should
40:00
look
40:00
like
40:00
that.

to
40:08
