- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Brewing Better Marriages from T South Dakota with Philip and Debbie Sanders.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: If these podcasts have been a help to you, pass it on to others and let us know with an email.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Also include any questions you might have on the subjects that we cover.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Well, man, what a trip, Deb.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: The last two have been with uh Connie and Rick.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Wow, Deb, what a trip the last two have been.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: We've been interviewing Rick and Connie Binkley from Hodginville, Kentucky, and we have a special relationship because it is Debbie's sister and her brother-in-law.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And uh man, the last time I was having a hard time fighting back tears.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, in fact, I don't know if I did.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: But them talking about their children and how that they have impacted their life and what has happened with you.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: You got any uh additions to that that you'd like to say?
- 1:08SPEAKER_04: Yes, Brother Sanders, thank you.
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: Um we were talking about Evan and his difficulties, and we've not tried not to let his challenges hinder him.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: We've tried to push him and take him fishing, hunting, and just try to keep him involved with everything.
- 1:28SPEAKER_04: Has he ever got him a deer?
- 1:29SPEAKER_04: Oh, yes.
- 1:30SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: He loves it.
- 1:32SPEAKER_04: And he's a dead shot.
- 1:34SPEAKER_04: He is a dead shot.
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: You don't want him shooting at you.
- 1:40SPEAKER_04: But uh I think one of the greatest impacts uh we look back at at his ministry in life is how he's touched so many across our nation.
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: People prayed all over the country for us, and we were so appreciative.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: We felt so humbled, but that's the benefit of being in the family of God.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: You know, I remember him uh speaking at PFYC, and I asked him beforehand, Are you gonna be okay?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: He said, My greatest fear is falling off that stage.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, I remember that.
- 2:13SPEAKER_04: He was terrified of that stage that God used him.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: Yes, he did.
- 2:17SPEAKER_04: One thing I just would wanted to point out was um one of the best church supporters we have, uh man that was deep in sin that Evan kept inviting to church and reaching out to him.
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: And uh he said, he told me one day, he said, people don't understand why I'm a Christian now, but it's because of Evan and him loving me and reaching out toward me.
- 2:44SPEAKER_04: And I said, You need to tell him to encourage him.
- 2:48SPEAKER_04: And so Evan has a wonderful spirit and a way to touch people that others if he hadn't been through all this probably wouldn't have been able to.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: And you know, I know that I know that uh his um and and you guys don't refer it necessarily to as a ham handicapped, but his struggle with physical abilities um probably has highlighted him.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: But I want to say also that Ethan um is a gentleman's gentleman.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: And he has just been uh fantastic.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's a he's an excellent preacher, musician, and um he's excelled.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Um matter of fact, both of them have.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Uh so you know the competition isn't there.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: I don't feel that at all.
- 3:43SPEAKER_04: No competition.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: So we appreciate okay.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Now we we've discussed some of that and some of the difficulties with that.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Um we'll we'll go on to the point of where you're at now.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: And um and what Connie, I think Connie has some Yeah, there's uh because I'm her sister, I know.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Well, a few short years ago when I was 35, I uh started feeling bad.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: What has it been about 20 years, 30 years?
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: We'll never tell.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: In about the year 2000, I started feeling bad, and you know, and get had a rash on my face, and my hands started hurting my joints, and I waited a year and prayed, fasted, and asked the Lord, what should I do?
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: And he said, just walk with me.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: And I felt like, you know, do what I needed to do until he healed me.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: And so I I was diagnosed with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis and uh went to the doctor and got on meds for about 15 years, and I just prayed, Lord, give me the strength to to raise my children and to work for you, and he did, and to love your brother-in-law.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Yes, he gave me grace for that.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Yes, praise God.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: And in about um 2016, I finally came off all the meds.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Hallelujah.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: And I had been doing well for so long that the specialist said, I think I think do you want to try it coming off your meds?
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: I don't think you need them anymore.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: We've just been maintaining for a while, and I have done great now for 10 years.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: And you know, I just I thank the Lord for his touch because it doesn't usually happen, the doctor said.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Yes, and I know God can do it for anybody.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Rick, did I mean during that struggle uh with her health and things, was there anything that impacted you?
- 5:50SPEAKER_04: Uh yes, yes.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Other than walking around with a wife that had spots all over her face.
- 5:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was definitely a a hard trial for her.
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: I'd watch her come home from service with tears, uh, from her hands hurting from playing the piano after service after service.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Let me say that Connie is an accomplished pianist.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Yes, she is.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 6:17SPEAKER_04: And um, you know, watching God work, we just kept praying and kept seeking the Lord, and just amazing when the doctor told her, said, This doesn't happen, but you do not need all this medicine now, and pulled her off of that.
- 6:32SPEAKER_04: And so I know every ministry is gonna have their challenges.
- 6:36SPEAKER_04: Every family is gonna have their challenges.
- 6:39SPEAKER_04: It may be family issues, it may be physical issues, it may be spiritual and emotional issues, but God's faithful if you just stay committed to him and keep walking in his steps, God will bring you through it.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: You know, right now I'm thinking of that scripture in Psalms, the steps of a good man, and that word good man just applies to all of us, but it can also mean it's a neuter gender.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: It's a good man or woman, or what?
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Ordered ordered of the Lord.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: And then we always take the Lord delights, but it's us delighting in the way he orders our steps.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: And you know, these struggles, we're human, and sometimes we err because of our human uh nature.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: And he said, though he fall, and that word fall doesn't mean fall into sin, it just means though he err, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: So if we do miss that step that God says, Hey, I want you here, or I want you to do this, or I want your attitude to change, and we and we miss that, he said, I'm not gonna pitch you out.
- 7:50SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: I understand that.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: I've got a plan and a perfect will that I want you to accomplish in what you're doing.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: So um learning a little more about that, uh, let's go on to the next phase.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: So where are you at now and what's happening?
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, you guys, I know you're you're uh you have been knocking on the nursing home doors.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: I know that.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Well, we're not quite there.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Um, tell a little bit about your church and and the ministries and can I back up and just answer something else during this time.
- 8:27SPEAKER_04: My wife was also going through her physical issues in nine uh two thousand and nine, two thousand ten, I was diagnosed with cancer that my father had had.
- 8:38SPEAKER_04: I was in stage four renal failure.
- 8:41SPEAKER_04: Uh innumerable tumors in my lungs, spleen.
- 8:44SPEAKER_04: I've been feeling really bad for a while.
- 8:48SPEAKER_04: And uh so we just kept on seeking God, and he was talking about me going on Dallas and so forth.
- 8:56SPEAKER_04: But uh we just kept praying, seeking God, and God just intervened, gave me a miracle.
- 9:02SPEAKER_04: Um took a few months, several months, but uh I'm I'm healthy and strong and have been going to Praisel.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Well, not just glory.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Not just in the States, but you've got a ministry overseas too in Panama.
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: We have we have been involved with Holinessful Gospel missions for thirty-something years.
- 9:23SPEAKER_04: I pastor the home church of Sister Gail Myers, that's missionary to Mexico.
- 9:29SPEAKER_04: Um been to Mexico with her, been to Panama numerous times with her, and so we're on her board.
- 9:37SPEAKER_04: And uh even presently and able to uh take uh Ethan has been going down preaching or the youth camps with us for the last six, seven, eight years, and uh God just been moving there in a tremendous way.
- 9:53SPEAKER_04: Love short-term missions.
- 9:55SPEAKER_04: I don't know about going to the mission field and staying forever.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, we're spoiled Americans.
- 10:01SPEAKER_04: I am the same mentality.
- 10:04SPEAKER_04: But I certainly enjoy going and and uh it challenges you and it just uh keeps keeps the spark when you see so many souls saved and what God's doing there.
- 10:16SPEAKER_04: But Praise the Lord.
- 10:18SPEAKER_04: Appreciate God's call upon our life, and we've been in Hodginville going on 39 years working on our 39th year.
- 10:27SPEAKER_04: So pretty amazing.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Connie, you know, you're actively involved in the church.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: I I do music and Sunday school and a little cleaning and basically that's about it.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: If you have a if you have never been in one of Connie's Sunday school classes, you're missing a treat.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: Probably lots of treats.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: I like to throw candy like my mom did.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Well, your mother was a uh uh a formulative influence in both of your lives spiritually, um, showing you how you can make it through difficult circumstances, uh only by prayer and uh dedication to God's word, uh as well as uh there's just so much that's handed down.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Somebody told me about our daughter just recently, they were doing uh something with couples in Salem, they're at our home, where we pastor for 30 years, and they said, I think he was one of the kids told Debbie, he said, we just saw Gloria uh coming out in her as she spoke.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Well, if you see Connie, you'll see Gloria.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: And I've worked on Debbie.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: I've I've pretty well got, you know, but she is she still has, you know, it's just those old things come out.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: Hey, your influences of your raising when you don't just you know they just don't disappear.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: But what you do is you take the good and you you you build on the good things on that.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: My kids got all their good things from their dad, correctly?
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: Correct.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: Just ask them, they'll tell the truth.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Well, I've got a couple grandsons, uh three matter of fact, or four, that they say they're just just like their pawpaw.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: And my statement always is look how good they're gonna turn out.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: And their mom's cringe.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Well, do you guys have anything else you want to add?
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Well, the last thing I thought of was um it's so important in whether it's a marriage or a ministry, to be committed.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: No matter what, to be committed.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: So many times we um we resort to child's play, you know, accusations or um he touched me, he hurt me, or they did this, they did that, whether, you know, as a pastor or a spouse, you know, but we stay committed, remembering our promises to God, our promises to each other, and our goal, and that's how you make it.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: You know, in our marriage conference, one of the things we we bring out in the very beginning is this is about commitment.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Uh it's not about signing a dotted line, it's not about walking down an aisle.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: It's a simple fact you give your word and you're going to keep your word.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't, it doesn't stop with just your marriage.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: It even st it even comes into your ministry.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: God, I've given you my word, I've committed to you.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: And live, die, sink, or swim, you're my God.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: And if you want to take me out of this, uh, there's some times that I've even maybe even asked God, I'm sick of this.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Is there some way that you can go ahead and take me to heaven?
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: But his plan is so perfect.
- 14:05SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Because when you look back at what you were going through or the difficulties that you thought were struggles at that point, then you see that his grace has been sufficient and that it worked better for good.
- 14:21SPEAKER_04: His grace is always enough.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: We're not perfect, you know, and but God's plan.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: My computer uh gave a ding on there, so I'll let Cal get this out.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Let me back up.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: We can go through those struggles and go through those difficulties and look back on them and see that it's made us it's made us better.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: You know, Paul, when he asked for his thorn to be removed and God said no, uh Paul said, Well, if that's the way you look at it, Lord, if it's going to perfect me, I will moor the glory in my adversities.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Hallelujah.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: That's a difficult place to come to, but it's an awesome place when you really find uh what God is doing and how he's done it.
- 15:11unknown: Amen.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Well, it's been great to have uh Rick and Connie Binkley with us, and we're looking forward to spending a few days here in South Dakota with them.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Umce again, if these podcasts have been a blessing to you, pass it on.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Um let somebody else know about them.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: And um uh I think these interviews, Deb, how do you feel?
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: I think they've been awesome.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: They've been great.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: We'd like to proceed with this with other people.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: And just uh what this does is give you an inroad into other people's lives.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: So thank you for tuning in.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Uh like I said, pass it on, let ever be other people know about brewing better marriages.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: And you can do that, even let us know.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Encouragement.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Uh just send a note through the email.
