Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Chicago police face staffing CRISIS after DEADLY weekend shootings
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So, a deadly weekend in Chicago, as 41 people are
- 0:03Speaker 1: shot and three people are killed. President Trump sounding off, saying, quote,
- 0:07Speaker 1: these numbers are becoming normalized. It is out of control.
- 0:11Speaker 1: The city will die if the federal government, a fine-tuned
- 0:15Speaker 1: crime-fighting machine, is not invited in by the mayor or
- 0:18Speaker 1: governor to help. I am awaiting the call. The violence
- 0:23Speaker 1: coming just days after Mayor Brandon Johnson established a new
- 0:27Speaker 1: Office of Gun Violence Reduction.
- 0:31Speaker 2: The new office will work in concert with those on
- 0:34Speaker 2: the front lines that are part of this fight. We're
- 0:37Speaker 2: going to work with our Chicago police officers and our
- 0:39Speaker 2: community violence intervention partners while enabling the mayor's office of
- 0:43Speaker 2: community safety to continue advancing its mission of keeping our
- 0:47Speaker 2: community safe.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Johnson is also requiring companies seeking Chicago city contracts to
- 0:52Speaker 1: disclose leadership diversity data and ties to ICE. Let's bring
- 0:57Speaker 1: in retired Chicago Police Department Chief of Detective Eugene Roy. Eugene,
- 1:02Speaker 1: thanks so much for joining the program. You know Chicago well.
- 1:06Speaker 1: This story is not new, but the response to what's
- 1:11Speaker 1: going on, cutting the police department, there's—I mean, when you
- 1:13Speaker 1: look at the data right now, they're about over 1,000
- 1:17Speaker 1: cops short, and they aren't changing their philosophy, right?
- 1:23Speaker 3: No, not at all. And actually, that number is closer
- 1:26Speaker 3: to 2,000 than 1,000. We have a mayor who is
- 1:30Speaker 3: basically MIA. There's a lot of factors here. We have
- 1:35Speaker 3: the shortage of the police. There's definitely an anti-law enforcement
- 1:40Speaker 3: climate in Chicago, as there are in other major blue cities.
- 1:46Speaker 3: We've had eight years, eight years of a progressive anti-police prosecutor. Thankfully,
- 1:55Speaker 3: she was voted out of office. We now have a
- 1:57Speaker 3: new prosecutor who is more inclined to take us down
- 2:03Speaker 3: the path of common-sense, legitimate law enforcement. One of the
- 2:08Speaker 3: biggest problems that we have here in Chicago, obviously, the
- 2:12Speaker 3: political climate and the Safety Act. The police go out
- 2:15Speaker 3: and arrest dangerous, violent criminals, and they're back out on
- 2:19Speaker 3: the street in 24 hours after they have a preliminary
- 2:22Speaker 3: hearing before— a bond hearing before a judge. That's crazy. You're
- 2:28Speaker 3: putting the sharks back in the pool.
- 2:30Speaker 1: You know, Detective, it is crazy. And there's such a
- 2:33Speaker 1: focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, DEI. But the victims
- 2:39Speaker 1: that are being gunned down every single weekend are black
- 2:43Speaker 1: kids and brown kids. And there's no justice for them
- 2:47Speaker 1: at all. When you look at the numbers of the
- 2:50Speaker 1: shooting incidents for this year, we're almost the same as
- 2:55Speaker 1: last year. And the year isn't even over yet.
- 2:58Speaker 3: No, the summer isn't even over yet. This is crazy.
- 3:03Speaker 3: You know, one of the most telling things about this,
- 3:06Speaker 3: you know, talk about the political climate here, is where
- 3:10Speaker 3: was the leadership on Monday after all of this happened
- 3:14Speaker 3: over the weekend? There was no leadership. There was a
- 3:17Speaker 3: press conference about requiring companies that want to do business
- 3:20Speaker 3: with the city to meet DEI quotas. That's not leadership.
- 3:24Speaker 3: And in the absence of leadership, violence is going to
- 3:26Speaker 3: continue to flourish. That's exactly right.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Detective, I want to bring you another story and just
- 3:33Speaker 1: a quick warning for our audience. Some of what you're
- 3:35Speaker 1: about to see may be disturbing. Crimes in blue cities
- 3:39Speaker 1: are running rampant. Here in New York City, a woman
- 3:41Speaker 1: with a record of mental health issues randomly stabs two
- 3:45Speaker 1: people in the city in Times Square, broad daylight, killing
- 3:49Speaker 1: one before being shot dead by police. How important is
- 3:53Speaker 1: this to have enough police on the ground to avoid
- 3:58Speaker 1: situations like this?
- 4:01Speaker 3: It's critical, especially in New York City. New York City
- 4:06Speaker 3: has become a target for everybody over the past 30
- 4:11Speaker 3: years now. You have to have enough people. You have
- 4:14Speaker 3: the downtown there. You have, what, there must be a
- 4:18Speaker 3: million people downtown. You need to have an adequate police
- 4:21Speaker 3: presence to deter crime, deter incidents of this type, And
- 4:27Speaker 3: at the same time, when that deterrence doesn't work and
- 4:31Speaker 3: something bad does happen, you have enough officers on hand
- 4:34Speaker 3: to respond immediately, control the scene, make sure that everybody
- 4:40Speaker 3: is safe, summon medical aid, and take care of, you know,
- 4:44Speaker 3: process the crime scene and get things back to normal.
- 4:47Speaker 3: You have to have those numbers.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I just found it so concerning. I'm looking at
- 4:53Speaker 1: some of the commentary online. And all of the criticism...
- 4:57Speaker 1: was at the cops after asking the suspect to drop
- 5:01Speaker 1: the knife. And then they use something less lethal. They
- 5:04Speaker 1: try to use the taser. And she charges them and
- 5:07Speaker 1: tries to stab them. And, of course, they have to
- 5:09Speaker 1: use the lethal force. But she asked for it at
- 5:13Speaker 1: that point. And they're not praising these cops. They're condemning them.
- 5:17Speaker 1: So we just live in an upside-down world, Detective. Thanks
- 5:20Speaker 1: so much for joining the program.
- 5:22Speaker 3: My pleasure.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Thank you.
