- 2:43Speaker 5: It was Monday, February 9th. It was foggy in Los Angeles.
- 2:45Speaker 5: We were working the day watch out of Vice Detail.
- 2:47Speaker 5: My partner's Bill Lockwood. The boss is Lieutenant Bingham. My
- 2:50Speaker 5: name's Friday. It was 4.20 p.m. when I got to
- 2:53Speaker 5: the second floor of the old Central Jail building. Vice Detail. Hi, Joe. Hi, Bill.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Did he show up yet?
- 2:58Speaker 7: Yeah, waiting in the next room.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Oh, fine.
- 3:00Speaker 5: Did you talk to him yet?
- 3:01Speaker 7: No, he just came in a couple of minutes ago.
- 3:03Speaker 7: Figured I'd wait for you.
- 3:03Speaker 5: How's he seem? Sober? Does he look like he's off
- 3:05Speaker 5: the lush? Yeah, he looks pretty good.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Shaved, cleaned up a little.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Fine.
- 3:09Speaker 5: Dave, how are you? Oh, hiya, Franny. Thought I'd drop
- 3:12Speaker 5: by and see you.
- 3:12Speaker 6: Remember you were talking to.
- 3:13Speaker 8: Me last week about that thing.
- 3:14Speaker 5: You hear anything, Dave?
- 3:15Speaker 8: Yeah, I think I might have something for you. I
- 3:17Speaker 8: think it's what you're looking for. Tried to get you
- 3:18Speaker 8: on the phone last night, you weren't in.
- 3:20Speaker 5: Well, you should have left a message.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't want to do that.
- 3:22Speaker 5: You know how it is.
- 3:23Speaker 8: Guess I shouldn't even be coming up here like this.
- 3:24Speaker 7: You got some kind of a permanent address, Dave?
- 3:26Speaker 5: Phone number?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Some place we can contact you?
- 3:28Speaker 5: No, I'm still floating around a little. Now, about this
- 3:31Speaker 5: thing we were talking about, what'd you hear? I picked
- 3:33Speaker 5: up a little chatter.
- 3:33Speaker 9: I think it's what you want.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Say, you fellas had your coffee.
- 3:36Speaker 9: I haven't had mine.
- 3:36Speaker 5: What do you say? Okay.
- 3:37Speaker 9: How about the place down at the corner?
- 3:38Speaker 1: Fine with me.
- 3:39Speaker 3: All right.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Do you want to check us out, Bill? Tell them
- 3:40Speaker 5: we'll be back in about ten minutes. Yeah, fine.
- 3:42Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 3:44Speaker 5: All right, Dave. We'll walk this way.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 3:47Speaker 8: You're looking pretty good, Friday.
- 3:49Speaker 6: World treating you okay?
- 3:50Speaker 5: I can't complain, I guess. Go ahead.
- 3:52Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Guess we better wait for your partner, huh?
- 3:57Speaker 6: What's his name?
- 3:58Speaker 5: Lockwood.
- 3:58Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, sure.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Skipper's got something for us when we get back, Joe.
- 4:01Speaker 9: All right.
- 4:03Speaker 8: You're looking pretty good yourself, Lockwood.
- 4:05Speaker 5: Yeah, real good.
- 4:06Speaker 6: You seem to be in pretty fair shape.
- 4:08Speaker 5: That park is full of change.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Sounds healthy.
- 4:10Speaker 6: It's not too good.
- 4:11Speaker 7: Still got a few dimes to rattle. Hasn't been coming
- 4:12Speaker 7: too fast.
- 4:13Speaker 5: Let me know. You still setting pins down there at
- 4:16Speaker 5: that bowling alley? Yeah.
- 4:17Speaker 6: A lot of help hanging around, though.
- 4:19Speaker 8: They really got a hustle for it.
- 4:21Speaker 5: That so?
- 4:21Speaker 8: Oh, yeah. A lot of the alleys changing over to
- 4:23Speaker 8: those automatic machines, you know? Quite a few guys out.
- 4:26Speaker 8: A lot of these machines can set pins better than
- 4:28Speaker 8: a man can.
- 4:30Speaker 5: Hi, Matthews.
- 4:30Speaker 3: How are you?
- 4:31Speaker 5: Hi, Joe. Hi, Bill.
- 4:31Speaker 6: What do you say, Jack? Not too much.
- 4:34Speaker 7: Hey, who's that guy?
- 4:35Speaker 5: He works out of the office. Why? Nothing.
- 4:38Speaker 9: I thought I'd seen him around.
- 4:39Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 4:40Speaker 7: No, down this way, Dave.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Just a couple of doors.
- 4:42Speaker 8: Oh.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 4:43Speaker 5: By the way, did you hear anything about Tony? You
- 4:45Speaker 5: know if he's in town? No, I've been working on it.
- 4:48Speaker 8: Dirty Tony.
- 4:48Speaker 6: He's not going to show.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Go ahead, Dave. Yeah, well, thanks. Now, why don't you
- 4:54Speaker 5: two grab the back table?
- 4:55Speaker 6: I'll order up.
- 4:55Speaker 3: All right, fine. Black with sugar, huh?
- 4:57Speaker 5: All right.
- 4:57Speaker 7: Cream and sugar for you, Joe.
- 4:58Speaker 5: Yeah, all right. Fine. Bring a couple of those jelly donuts,
- 5:00Speaker 5: could you? Okay.
- 5:01Speaker 4: All right.
- 5:03Speaker 5: What's the story, Dave? What do you hear?
- 5:06Speaker 7: I heard about it last night, right after I left
- 5:07Speaker 7: the alley. You told me to keep my ears open,
- 5:09Speaker 7: you know?
- 5:09Speaker 8: Yeah. Said you figured there might be something on that
- 5:12Speaker 8: new bunch hanging around the bar down from the alleys.
- 5:14Speaker 8: Figured they might tie in with a new bunch of
- 5:15Speaker 8: high rollers in town.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:17Speaker 5: What'd you pick up?
- 5:18Speaker 2: I think you figured right, from what I heard, anyway.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Here you go. Have a donut, Dave?
- 5:22Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, thanks.
- 5:24Speaker 9: You make a fine waiter, Lockwood.
- 5:25Speaker 6: Thanks. We don't get a lead pretty soon.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I may have to take it up.
- 5:28Speaker 5: Dave was just telling me that he figures he might
- 5:30Speaker 5: have something for us. He picked it up at the
- 5:31Speaker 5: spot down from the alleys last night.
- 5:33Speaker 8: Well, like I said, after I was through with the alleys,
- 5:35Speaker 8: I stopped by the place and had a couple of beers.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Can't afford anything else. A few nickels, they'd pay me.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Lucky to get enough to eat the way things are going. Yeah,
- 5:42Speaker 5: it's pretty rough, I know.
- 5:43Speaker 6: Well, what's the pitch you got, Dave?
- 5:45Speaker 8: Well, I was sitting there having a beer and a
- 5:46Speaker 8: couple of those new faces were sitting next to me.
- 5:48Speaker 5: So I put my.
- 5:49Speaker 8: Ear out and tried to pick up some of the talk.
- 5:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:51Speaker 8: I couldn't get all of it, but I did get
- 5:53Speaker 8: enough to make out there's going to be a big
- 5:54Speaker 8: game tonight. From what I could get, there's going to
- 5:56Speaker 8: be a lot of scratch floating around.
- 5:57Speaker 7: You hear what it's going to be, Dave? I had
- 5:59Speaker 7: to play it careful, you know.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Couldn't be too nosy.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Yeah, true.
- 6:03Speaker 8: I sat and had another beer in one of these
- 6:05Speaker 8: new monks. Heard the other guy call him Mike, I think.
- 6:07Speaker 8: He asked the bartender for change to make a phone call.
- 6:09Speaker 8: He got the change, went over the wall phone. I
- 6:11Speaker 8: got up and drifted over that way. It made out
- 6:13Speaker 8: like I was watching a shuffleboard.
- 6:15Speaker 6: I caught some of his talk.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Now, what was that?
- 6:18Speaker 9: Well, he was talking about some.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Big game tonight.
- 6:20Speaker 8: I heard him say to the guy on the other
- 6:21Speaker 8: end not to show up before 11.30.
- 6:23Speaker 5: To get an address? Yeah.
- 6:25Speaker 8: He said he'd be back of an empty store building
- 6:27Speaker 8: down on Gibbons Avenue.
- 6:28Speaker 6: You get the number?
- 6:29Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 6:29Speaker 8: 9-1-2-2.
- 6:31Speaker 5: What was that again? 9-1-2-2, is that right? Yeah. Gibbons, huh? Yeah,
- 6:35Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure.
- 6:35Speaker 7: As soon as I got out of the place, I
- 6:37Speaker 7: wrote it down.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Wait a minute.
- 6:39Speaker 5: I got it.
- 6:42Speaker 7: Let's see.
- 6:42Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 6:42Speaker 5: 9-1-2-2, Gibbons. Yeah, that's it. Now, this fellow that made
- 6:45Speaker 5: the phone call, did you say his name was Mike?
- 6:46Speaker 6: Is that right?
- 6:48Speaker 9: Yeah, that's what I heard his partner call him. He's
- 6:49Speaker 9: kind of a short guy, like.
- 6:52Speaker 5: 35, 36, on the fat side, black hair.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Mm-hmm. Mike Filmer.
- 6:55Speaker 3: You know him?
- 6:55Speaker 9: Yeah, we've had an eye on him.
- 6:56Speaker 6: Thought he might figure in.
- 6:58Speaker 5: Not about the size of a day? That all you heard?
- 7:01Speaker 4: Yeah, that's about it, Franny.
- 7:01Speaker 8: As soon as he finished the phone call and his
- 7:04Speaker 8: partner left, I finished my beer and left, too. I
- 7:05Speaker 8: had to. Couldn't afford another one.
- 7:08Speaker 5: Real tough these days.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Yeah, well, thanks a lot, Dave.
- 7:10Speaker 6: Really appreciate it.
- 7:10Speaker 7: Well, don't mention it.
- 7:11Speaker 5: You've always done all right by me.
- 7:14Speaker 8: Donut sure tasted great.
- 7:16Speaker 6: Still hungry.
- 7:17Speaker 7: I feel like I could take on a three-inch steak.
- 7:19Speaker 5: I'm sorry things aren't better for you, Dave. How about
- 7:23Speaker 5: a ten spot?
- 7:23Speaker 6: Will that help you?
- 7:25Speaker 5: It sure will, Franny.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Thanks a lot, huh?
- 7:27Speaker 9: Really can use it.
- 7:28Speaker 5: Well, glad to help you. You're always helping us.
- 7:30Speaker 8: You sure make it nice.
- 7:31Speaker 2: I mean, you make it nice and easy on a guy.
- 7:33Speaker 6: What do you mean?
- 7:34Speaker 5: Well, it's always there first. I never have to come
- 7:36Speaker 5: right out and ask. What's that? The dough.
- 7:39Speaker 2: You always get the pitch, don't you?
- 7:45Speaker 5: Almost a month before, we had begun receiving complaints about
- 7:48Speaker 5: a newly established gambling ring which had set up operations
- 7:51Speaker 5: in the city. After the first few complaints, we succeeded
- 7:54Speaker 5: in identifying some of the men involved in the ring
- 7:56Speaker 5: and also some of the places they frequented. The nature
- 7:59Speaker 5: of most of the complaints against them was such that
- 8:01Speaker 5: we knew we were dealing with a well-organized criminal element.
- 8:04Speaker 5: Even if a player happened to win at one of
- 8:06Speaker 5: the games, after he left the location, he was beaten
- 8:08Speaker 5: and robbed. Despite the fact that we had some of
- 8:11Speaker 5: the suspects identified, we still lacked sufficient evidence to prosecute
- 8:15Speaker 5: them successfully. The various victims either would not or could
- 8:19Speaker 5: not identify the suspect. We knew the gang was running
- 8:22Speaker 5: three or four games a week, each one of them
- 8:24Speaker 5: at a different location, each one of them at a
- 8:25Speaker 5: different time. in the trade that's known as a floating game.
- 8:29Speaker 5: After we left our informant, Dave Carter, we headed back
- 8:32Speaker 5: to the office and briefed Lieutenant Bingham. That afternoon, we
- 8:35Speaker 5: checked the address on Gibbons Avenue and found it to
- 8:37Speaker 5: be a vacant store building with a For Rent sign
- 8:39Speaker 5: in the window. There was an entrance in front and
- 8:42Speaker 5: one in the rear, windows along both sides of the building,
- 8:45Speaker 5: and a plasterboard partition dividing the inside of the store
- 8:47Speaker 5: into two parts.
- 8:49Speaker 3: The place was deserted. At 10 o'clock that night, Bill.
- 8:52Speaker 5: Lockwood and I staked out in our car down the
- 8:54Speaker 5: street from the store. Sergeant Fred Taylor and Jack Matthews
- 8:57Speaker 5: were staked out in their car from another point of observation.
- 9:00Speaker 5: We were in constant touch with each other by three-way radio. 10.30.
- 9:03Speaker 5: 11 p.m.
- 9:04Speaker 8: 11.30.
- 9:04Speaker 5: 1K87 to 1K80, come in. 1K80 to 1K87, go ahead.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Joe, did you notice the lights come on in the back.
- 9:11Speaker 5: Of the store a minute ago? Yeah, two men. They
- 9:19Speaker 5: went in the back way, parked their car just down
- 9:21Speaker 5: the street from us here. Did you see anything else?
- 9:23Speaker 3: Car just pulled up down the street from us.
- 9:25Speaker 6: Two men getting out, heading for the store.
- 9:27Speaker 5: Joe, just a minute.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Yeah, they're going that way.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I see.
- 9:32Speaker 3: They're going around the back, Joe.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
- 9:34Speaker 7: Looks like it's going to pay off.
- 9:36Speaker 6: Let's sit on it a while.
- 9:38Speaker 2: KMA 367.
- 9:40Speaker 3: We waited.
- 9:42Speaker 5: 11.45. A blue pickup truck pulled up and stopped a
- 9:45Speaker 5: short way from the front entrance to the store... We
- 9:47Speaker 5: saw two men get out and go around to the
- 9:49Speaker 5: back of the truck and unload half a dozen large boxes,
- 9:51Speaker 5: which they carried around to the rear entrance of the place.
- 9:54Speaker 5: One of the men came back, got in the cab
- 9:56Speaker 5: of the truck, and sat there. Midnight, 12.15 a.m. Over
- 10:01Speaker 5: a period of half an hour, we watched 18 persons
- 10:03Speaker 5: arrive from different directions and enter the store from the rear. 12.30,
- 10:06Speaker 5: 1 a.m. There were no new arrivals. We waited.
- 10:10Speaker 2: 1K87 to 1K80, come in. 1K80 to 1K87, go ahead.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Not much activity down here, Joe.
- 10:18Speaker 5: Looks like it's pretty well set.
- 10:20Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 10:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I think we might as well hit it. Same
- 10:23Speaker 5: way we laid it out, huh, Fred? We'll wait until
- 10:25Speaker 5: Matthews picks up the lookout, the man sitting in the truck.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Right, Joe. Jack, you want to go ahead and grab him?
- 10:31Speaker 5: Go away.
- 10:36Speaker 7: He's on his way, Joe.
- 10:37Speaker 5: Okay, as soon as he picks him up, we meet
- 10:39Speaker 5: in front of the place. Bill and I will take
- 10:41Speaker 5: the front. You cover the back.
- 10:42Speaker 2: You got that?
- 10:43Speaker 6: Okay, Joe.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Oh, hold on a minute, will you?
- 10:47Speaker 6: Yeah, Jack, got him. Bringing him back to the car.
- 10:50Speaker 5: Okay, let's go. KMA 367. You got the car, Kingsville?
- 10:54Speaker 7: Yeah, let's go. You figure that's the best way Joe
- 11:01Speaker 7: 2 is going in the front?
- 11:02Speaker 5: Well, it's probably where the rush is going to be.
- 11:03Speaker 5: When Fred goes through the back, they're sure to start
- 11:05Speaker 5: for the front.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Okay, Joe?
- 11:08Speaker 5: Yeah. Jack's got the lookout in our car.
- 11:09Speaker 6: He'll wait for us.
- 11:10Speaker 8: Right.
- 11:10Speaker 5: Now, what do you think about this, Fred? You go
- 11:12Speaker 5: around and hit the back door. As soon as they
- 11:13Speaker 5: hear you inside, they'll probably start for the front. We'll
- 11:16Speaker 5: take care of them there. That's a good idea.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Give me half a minute to get back there.
- 11:19Speaker 5: Right. Watch yourself.
- 11:21Speaker 1: All right, Joe.
- 11:22Speaker 5: Let's go.
- 11:28Speaker 7: They're still going.
- 11:29Speaker 6: You're wise to us.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Yeah, let's hold it right now. Police officer, we got
- 11:33Speaker 5: an arrest.
- 11:33Speaker 9: Now, hold it right there.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Come on, Bill. Let's hit it.
- 11:40Speaker 7: All right, get back there.
- 11:41Speaker 5: Get back.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Police officers.
- 11:43Speaker 5: Come on, back against the wall. They went out the window, Joe. Fred, Fred.
- 11:46Speaker 5: I said get back against the wall, all of you.
- 11:48Speaker 5: All right, I'll cover him. You get back and see
- 11:49Speaker 5: what happened to Fred. Right. All right, mister. With the
- 11:52Speaker 5: rest of them there, back against the wall.
- 11:53Speaker 2: All right, I'm going.
- 11:54Speaker 6: What's the beef about anyway?
- 11:56Speaker 4: All right, all of you, turn around.
- 11:57Speaker 5: Face the wall. Put your hands against the wall.
- 11:58Speaker 9: What's the pitch anyway? Treat this like a bunch of thieves.
- 12:00Speaker 2: You're just having a little fun.
- 12:01Speaker 8: No harm done.
- 12:02Speaker 5: Joe. Yeah, did you find Fred?
- 12:03Speaker 4: What happened?
- 12:04Speaker 7: He's been shot, hurt bad. Matthew's in with him now.
- 12:06Speaker 5: I'll call the ambulance.
- 12:06Speaker 7: Get some help.
- 12:07Speaker 3: All right.
- 12:08Speaker 5: All right, you two, in with the others. Back against
- 12:09Speaker 5: the wall.
- 12:09Speaker 3: What's the beef?
- 12:10Speaker 9: Sure, big noise about nothing. We're here to play a
- 12:13Speaker 9: little cards, friendly game. Just a dollar limit. Nobody ever
- 12:15Speaker 9: gets hurt.
- 12:16Speaker 3: We're all friends.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Is that why you carry guns?
- 12:17Speaker 3: 1.20 a.m.
- 12:23Speaker 5: The ambulance arrived and Sergeant Fred Taylor was taken immediately
- 12:26Speaker 5: to Georgia Street Receiving Hospital in a critical condition. He'd
- 12:30Speaker 5: been shot twice through the upper portion of the chest.
- 12:32Speaker 5: He'd been unconscious from the time.
- 12:34Speaker 6: Of the shooting.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Who the assailant was, we had no idea. The crime
- 12:38Speaker 5: lab arrived at the scene and began their preliminary investigation. Meantime,
- 12:42Speaker 5: homicide officers had arrived and all units in the area
- 12:44Speaker 5: were assisting in the investigation, making a house-to-house canvas and
- 12:48Speaker 5: checking all backyards, alleys, and unoccupied buildings for possible suspects
- 12:52Speaker 5: in hiding. Out of the total number of men present
- 12:55Speaker 5: in the store at the time of the shooting, Bill
- 12:57Speaker 5: and I had been able to detain nine of them.
- 12:59Speaker 5: The remainder had either scrambled outside windows or the rear
- 13:02Speaker 5: door and then apparently made their way over back fences.
- 13:05Speaker 5: The nine we did get were taken downtown for interrogation.
- 13:09Speaker 5: All of them had been searched, but no weapons had
- 13:11Speaker 5: been found. Bill Lockwood and I remained at the scene
- 13:13Speaker 5: assisting the homicide officers. 2.05 a.m. An additional four men
- 13:18Speaker 5: who'd been present at the gambling game that night were
- 13:20Speaker 5: picked up in the area, transported downtown, and held along
- 13:23Speaker 5: with the other nine at homicide detail. 2.20 a.m. Bill
- 13:27Speaker 5: and I were called downtown to assist in the questioning.
- 13:30Speaker 5: We got nowhere with the first three suspects. It was
- 13:32Speaker 5: the same with the fourth.
- 13:34Speaker 7: You expect us to believe that, Mike?
- 13:35Speaker 9: Well, it's the truth.
- 13:36Speaker 6: I don't know anything about it.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Now, look, Mike, let's put it on the table, huh?
- 13:38Speaker 5: We listened to your line of chatter down at the
- 13:40Speaker 5: store when we made the pinch. We heard it all.
- 13:41Speaker 5: Now let's get on to facts.
- 13:42Speaker 7: I told you everything I know, no different than the
- 13:44Speaker 7: other guys you picked up.
- 13:45Speaker 9: I heard there was going to be a game tonight,
- 13:46Speaker 9: so I came down.
- 13:46Speaker 5: Who'd you come down with? How'd you get there?
- 13:48Speaker 9: I drove.
- 13:49Speaker 6: Came by myself.
- 13:49Speaker 5: Where'd you park your car?
- 13:50Speaker 9: About two blocks away, a little alley there. By a
- 13:52Speaker 9: gas station.
- 13:52Speaker 5: You're a liar, mister, and you know it.
- 13:54Speaker 9: Well, it's the truth, so help me.
- 13:55Speaker 7: If I knew there was going to be trouble, I
- 13:56Speaker 7: wouldn't even have showed up.
- 13:57Speaker 9: I'd play a few cards, sure.
- 13:58Speaker 7: I don't go in for heavy stuff, though.
- 14:00Speaker 9: I haven't got anything to do with the gang.
- 14:01Speaker 5: You're a liar.
- 14:02Speaker 9: You can't say that.
- 14:03Speaker 5: Now, you show me where I've lied to you.
- 14:04Speaker 3: You tell me.
- 14:04Speaker 7: We were staked out on that place tonight, Mike. It
- 14:06Speaker 7: was a little past 11.45. You drove up in a
- 14:08Speaker 7: blue pickup truck. Another man was with you.
- 14:10Speaker 5: You were driving.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Oh, no, you got it wrong.
- 14:11Speaker 5: No, we haven't got it wrong. You parked that truck
- 14:13Speaker 5: about 10 yards down the street from the front of
- 14:14Speaker 5: the store. You got out first. The other man followed you.
- 14:17Speaker 5: You unloaded six large cartons from the truck. Some of
- 14:19Speaker 5: the equipment we found in the store. You took it
- 14:21Speaker 5: around back and into the rear door, didn't you? You
- 14:22Speaker 5: got it wrong.
- 14:23Speaker 9: It wasn't me.
- 14:23Speaker 6: It couldn't have been me.
- 14:24Speaker 7: Come off it, Mike. The man you were with, we've
- 14:25Speaker 7: got him down the hall. The other officers have talked
- 14:27Speaker 7: to him. He gave him the straight story.
- 14:28Speaker 5: I didn't come with any other guy.
- 14:30Speaker 7: Now, will you listen to me?
- 14:31Speaker 9: I knew some of them there.
- 14:32Speaker 2: I'll admit that.
- 14:32Speaker 9: I came by myself.
- 14:33Speaker 5: Now, you listen to me, mister. You get this through
- 14:34Speaker 5: your head. Get it once and for all. This isn't
- 14:36Speaker 5: a gambling beef anymore. Somebody's been shot. He's been hurt bad.
- 14:38Speaker 9: Well, that's not my fault.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I didn't shoot him.
- 14:40Speaker 4: I don't know anything about it.
- 14:40Speaker 5: You know more than you're telling. You lied about coming
- 14:42Speaker 5: there in that truck. We saw you. Something else. The
- 14:44Speaker 5: truck's been checked out. It's registered in your name. Now,
- 14:46Speaker 5: you come up with an answer for that one fast.
- 14:47Speaker 9: Well, I don't get it. Maybe my truck is down there.
- 14:49Speaker 9: If it is, I don't know how it got there.
- 14:50Speaker 7: You're in a jam, Mike. This isn't any misdemeanor rap.
- 14:52Speaker 7: I think the sooner you realize that, the better it's
- 14:53Speaker 7: going to.
- 14:54Speaker 9: Be for you. Look, you don't have to tell me
- 14:55Speaker 9: it's serious. I know that. Now, what do you want
- 14:57Speaker 9: from me anyway?
- 14:57Speaker 5: You know what we want. You know the answers and
- 14:59Speaker 5: we want them. You're part of that gambling setup. We
- 15:01Speaker 5: know that. We know who was there tonight.
- 15:02Speaker 3: Everybody.
- 15:02Speaker 5: We want the names of every one of them. Now,
- 15:04Speaker 5: either you got the answer to that shooting or somebody
- 15:05Speaker 5: in that crowd has. We're going to get the answer, Mike.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Don't make any mistake about it. We're going to get it.
- 15:08Speaker 9: Now, what do I have to say to convince you
- 15:10Speaker 9: you're talking to the wrong guy?
- 15:11Speaker 7: Not according to the man they got down the hall,
- 15:13Speaker 7: the one in the pickup truck with you.
- 15:14Speaker 5: He gave us the whole story.
- 15:15Speaker 7: You hired him to help you tonight. You were going
- 15:16Speaker 7: to pay him 20 bucks. He helped you haul the
- 15:18Speaker 7: equipment to the store and he was supposed to be
- 15:19Speaker 7: the lookout at the front door.
- 15:20Speaker 9: It ties in all the way.
- 15:22Speaker 5: How about it? All right.
- 15:23Speaker 9: Now, you've been calling people liars, huh?
- 15:25Speaker 3: Well, he's the liar.
- 15:25Speaker 5: The whole lousy story is nothing but a lie. All right,
- 15:27Speaker 5: keep quiet. Friday talking.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Oh, yes, sir.
- 15:33Speaker 5: All right.
- 15:34Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 15:35Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 15:39Speaker 5: Now, you listen, Mike. Here's a piece of advice. You
- 15:41Speaker 5: make up your mind.
- 15:41Speaker 9: How do you mean make up my mind? I'm trying
- 15:43Speaker 9: to cooperate. You don't believe me. I'm trying to help
- 15:46Speaker 9: you out every way I can. I'm only too glad
- 15:47Speaker 9: to give you a hand. I know you got a
- 15:49Speaker 9: tough job.
- 15:50Speaker 3: You got my.
- 15:50Speaker 5: Now, don't you worry about us, man. From here on,
- 15:52Speaker 5: start worrying about yourself. You're going to do a lot
- 15:54Speaker 5: of it.
- 15:54Speaker 6: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 15:55Speaker 5: That policeman, he just died.
- 16:08Speaker 4: You are listening to Dragnet. Authentic stories of your police
- 16:12Speaker 4: force in action.

- 17:26Speaker 5: Tuesday, February 10th, 5.30 a.m. Sergeant Fred Taylor had died
- 17:30Speaker 5: at approximately 5.22 a.m. Cause of death was listed as
- 17:34Speaker 5: hemorrhage and shock due to the two gunshot wounds in
- 17:37Speaker 5: the chest. Officers from the medical detail had rushed Taylor's
- 17:40Speaker 5: wife from his home to the receiving hospital. She was
- 17:43Speaker 5: with him at the time of his death. Unfortunately, he
- 17:46Speaker 5: never regained consciousness. 5.45 a.m. While the investigation went on
- 17:51Speaker 5: at the scene of the murder, Bill Lockwood and I
- 17:53Speaker 5: continued our interrogation of the suspect, Mike Filmer. Another hour
- 17:56Speaker 5: of questioning, and he still refused to tell us anything.
- 17:59Speaker 5: We finally confronted him with the man we'd seen him
- 18:01Speaker 5: arrive with at the location of the gambling game earlier
- 18:04Speaker 5: that morning. Another ten minutes of questioning, and he finally
- 18:07Speaker 5: broke down.
- 18:07Speaker 7: Why didn't you tell us that to begin with?
- 18:09Speaker 6: Believe me, I wanted to.
- 18:10Speaker 8: I was scared.
- 18:11Speaker 9: I was scared to death.
- 18:11Speaker 6: I never had anything like this happen to me before.
- 18:14Speaker 6: I didn't know what to do. I didn't know what
- 18:15Speaker 6: to say.
- 18:15Speaker 5: All right, this is a complete list of everybody you
- 18:17Speaker 5: saw there last night. Everybody who was in that game.
- 18:20Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it covers it. Let me see it.
- 18:22Speaker 5: All right, here you are.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, just about everybody.
- 18:28Speaker 5: These are the only addresses you've got.
- 18:29Speaker 6: Just these three here.
- 18:30Speaker 5: Yeah, that's it.
- 18:31Speaker 2: No, I'm not lying.
- 18:31Speaker 9: Now, believe me, those are the only ones I know of.
- 18:33Speaker 6: All right.
- 18:34Speaker 5: So you had a hand in the game. You brought
- 18:36Speaker 5: in the equipment. You were working for the house.
- 18:37Speaker 6: That's right.
- 18:38Speaker 5: Then who's the boss, Mike? Who's running the game? What
- 18:41Speaker 5: about it?
- 18:41Speaker 6: Who's running it?
- 18:43Speaker 9: Look, I've told you, everybody that was there, everybody. He
- 18:45Speaker 9: wasn't there that night.
- 18:46Speaker 5: He couldn't have had anything to do with it. Mike,
- 18:48Speaker 5: we didn't ask you that. We asked you who the
- 18:49Speaker 5: boss is. What's his name? Now, how about if we
- 18:52Speaker 5: want his name?
- 18:53Speaker 9: But I told you he wasn't there last night. If
- 18:55Speaker 9: he wasn't there, he couldn't have anything to do with it.
- 18:57Speaker 6: Look, he's a nice guy.
- 18:58Speaker 9: He doesn't want trouble any more than I do.
- 18:59Speaker 3: He couldn't tell you anything.
- 19:00Speaker 5: You let us figure that out, will you? Now, who's
- 19:01Speaker 5: the boss, Mike?
- 19:02Speaker 2: Does it have to be?
- 19:03Speaker 6: Is that important?
- 19:04Speaker 5: We wouldn't be asking you. Who is he?
- 19:06Speaker 6: George Delano.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Now, that's all I know about him, his name. How
- 19:09Speaker 2: does he spell his last name?
- 19:10Speaker 5: What's he look like?
- 19:11Speaker 9: Well, I guess it's D-E-L-A-N-O. I never saw him write
- 19:16Speaker 9: it down, though. I've only known him about a month,
- 19:18Speaker 9: maybe five weeks.
- 19:19Speaker 5: What's his description?
- 19:20Speaker 9: Well, he's taller than I am, about 5 feet 10,
- 19:22Speaker 9: 11 maybe.
- 19:23Speaker 5: Dark hair.
- 19:24Speaker 6: A little bit on the heavy side. You know, like me,
- 19:26Speaker 6: I guess. Man about 45, 50. Where does he live?
- 19:29Speaker 5: Where do we find him?
- 19:30Speaker 6: I don't know where he lives.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Some hotel downtown, I think.
- 19:32Speaker 6: The only times I ever met him was at a bar.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Which bar? Where about?
- 19:35Speaker 6: South end of town. Down on Vermont.
- 19:38Speaker 9: I don't know the address, but I can point it
- 19:39Speaker 9: out to you. It's a couple doors down from Big
- 19:41Speaker 9: Bowling Alley.
- 19:42Speaker 7: Right across from a theater. Woman's dress shop next door.
- 19:44Speaker 9: Yeah, that's right.
- 19:44Speaker 6: That's the place.
- 19:45Speaker 9: The only place I've ever seen him. He always calls
- 19:47Speaker 9: me at home and.
- 19:47Speaker 6: Tells me where to meet him.
- 19:48Speaker 5: You mean to say you've been working for him? this
- 19:50Speaker 5: Delano and you don't even know where he lives?
- 19:51Speaker 9: Well, I don't know what else to tell you. I'm
- 19:53Speaker 9: squaring with you.
- 19:53Speaker 3: I really don't know.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Friday, talk to you, man?
- 19:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll be right back.
- 19:59Speaker 6: What do you got, Sam?
- 20:04Speaker 9: Charlie Hart and I just got back from a place
- 20:06Speaker 9: down on Gibbons Avenue.
- 20:07Speaker 5: The store? Yeah.
- 20:08Speaker 6: Thought you'd like to know. We found a gun in
- 20:10Speaker 6: the back of the place hidden under a lumber pile.
- 20:12Speaker 3: All right.
- 20:12Speaker 5: Did you check it out?
- 20:13Speaker 6: Yeah, I ran through gun records. It's registered.
- 20:15Speaker 5: What's the name?
- 20:16Speaker 6: George Delano.
- 20:21Speaker 5: 7.38 a.m. With the new lead on the alleged boss
- 20:23Speaker 5: of the gambling ring, George Delano, we interrupted our questioning
- 20:26Speaker 5: of the suspect, Mike Filmer. We took him down the
- 20:29Speaker 5: hall back to the homicide squadron to be held for
- 20:32Speaker 5: further interrogation. We checked Delano through R & I, but
- 20:35Speaker 5: we had no record on him. Then, along with Sergeant
- 20:38Speaker 5: Sam Flowers and Charlie Hart of Homicide, we drove out
- 20:40Speaker 5: to the address of George Delano as listed in the
- 20:43Speaker 5: gun registration files. There was a small cottage in the
- 20:46Speaker 5: Wilshire area. The woman who answered the door identified herself
- 20:49Speaker 5: as Mrs. George Delano, the suspect's wife. She called her
- 20:53Speaker 5: husband to the door. We identified ourselves, briefed him on
- 20:55Speaker 5: the reason for our visit, and told him we wanted
- 20:57Speaker 5: to talk to him downtown. He appeared cooperative, more than
- 21:00Speaker 5: willing to come along. He got dressed. We drove him
- 21:03Speaker 5: back to the city hall and took him to the
- 21:04Speaker 5: interrogation room. He was well-dressed and in his own way, well-mannered.
- 21:09Speaker 5: After being told of the situation, he admitted freely that
- 21:12Speaker 5: he'd been operating games at different locations throughout the city
- 21:14Speaker 5: for the past month and a half. He told us
- 21:17Speaker 5: that he'd employed Mike Filmer to assist him in his operations,
- 21:19Speaker 5: and he also admitted ownership of the gun found near
- 21:22Speaker 5: the murder scene. The gun had since been checked by
- 21:24Speaker 5: Russ Camp and Ballistics and found to be the murder weapon.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Well, yes, it's my gun, but I'd like to explain
- 21:29Speaker 2: a little bit about it.
- 21:29Speaker 5: What's that, Delano?
- 21:30Speaker 2: Number one, I admit I'm a gambler. That's my racket.
- 21:33Speaker 2: I'm new to Los Angeles. I have to admit, I've
- 21:35Speaker 2: been working a few games. When I'm no murderer, I
- 21:37Speaker 2: wouldn't have any part of it.
- 21:37Speaker 5: You said you were going to explain about the gun. Now,
- 21:39Speaker 5: what about it?
- 21:40Speaker 2: Now, look, I'd like to fill you in on everything, officers.
- 21:42Speaker 2: I got nothing to hide from you. I'll tell you everything. Now,
- 21:44Speaker 2: when I first came to this town, as I say,
- 21:46Speaker 2: it's been about five, six weeks. I made a few connections,
- 21:49Speaker 2: and I started running these games. For the first couple
- 21:51Speaker 2: of weeks, everything went fine.
- 21:52Speaker 6: No beefs.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Everything was fine. All I had to do was dodge
- 21:55Speaker 2: you fellas, and then the trouble started.
- 21:56Speaker 7: How do you mean?
- 21:57Speaker 2: You mind if I have a smoke?
- 21:59Speaker 6: A little upset.
- 22:00Speaker 5: No, go ahead.
- 22:01Speaker 6: You care for one?
- 22:02Speaker 5: No, nothing.
- 22:03Speaker 2: I want to fill you in from the start. I
- 22:04Speaker 2: want to clear this whole thing up.
- 22:06Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what you said. Yeah.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Well, as I told you, the first few weeks, everything
- 22:10Speaker 2: was fine. Then one night when the game was just
- 22:13Speaker 2: about ready to break, a couple of punks came in,
- 22:15Speaker 2: held us up. They cleaned everybody in the place, made
- 22:17Speaker 2: a big hole.
- 22:18Speaker 7: When was this?
- 22:19Speaker 6: Where did it happen?
- 22:19Speaker 2: Down on the east side. Punks took us for everything.
- 22:22Speaker 2: You know how it is. Couldn't make a report to you.
- 22:24Speaker 2: I just had to take it, cover the losses myself.
- 22:26Speaker 5: Yeah, now how about that gun?
- 22:27Speaker 2: I'm coming to it. This thing happens, and I figure
- 22:30Speaker 2: that's the end of it. But no, a couple nights later,
- 22:31Speaker 2: they hit again. I still can't squat. I have to
- 22:33Speaker 2: stand the losses. Another couple nights, they knock us over again.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Couldn't do a thing about it. All right, we've.
- 22:38Speaker 3: Heard all that.
- 22:39Speaker 5: That's your racket. You can expect it. All we want
- 22:41Speaker 5: to know is about that gun. Now, what's your story?
- 22:42Speaker 2: I told you I was coming to it. After the
- 22:44Speaker 2: third time they reached us, I hired a guard. Somebody
- 22:46Speaker 2: stand watch outside in case of another stick-up. The only
- 22:48Speaker 2: thing I could do.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 22:50Speaker 2: Well, so I hired some guy to stand guard on
- 22:51Speaker 2: the games. I loaned him my gun in case there
- 22:54Speaker 2: was any trouble.
- 22:54Speaker 5: And you told him to use it in case there
- 22:56Speaker 5: was trouble.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right.
- 22:57Speaker 5: How about a raid from the police? You tell him
- 22:59Speaker 5: to use it for that?
- 22:59Speaker 3: No, no.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Matter of fact, I made a point of telling him
- 23:01Speaker 2: about that. All he was supposed to use the gun
- 23:03Speaker 2: for was just to fire it up in the air,
- 23:04Speaker 2: maybe scare those punks off and warn the guys inside
- 23:07Speaker 2: at the same time.
- 23:07Speaker 5: We'll talk about that later, Delano. We want to know
- 23:09Speaker 5: who had the gun last night.
- 23:11Speaker 6: Well, the guard did.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I told you, I loaned him the gun.
- 23:13Speaker 5: Who was the guard?
- 23:13Speaker 6: What's his name? Where do we find him?
- 23:15Speaker 2: His name's Jake. A friend of mine got him for me.
- 23:17Speaker 6: He's Jake Gleason.
- 23:18Speaker 2: That's it, Gleason.
- 23:19Speaker 5: Where does he live?
- 23:20Speaker 2: Couldn't tell you that. I don't know. I always contacted
- 23:22Speaker 2: him at a bar in South Vermont, a place I
- 23:24Speaker 2: go quite a bit. A little too early to catch
- 23:26Speaker 2: him there now. What do you know about this Gleason?
- 23:28Speaker 5: What's he look like?
- 23:29Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 23:29Speaker 2: I haven't seen him much. I guess you'd say he's
- 23:31Speaker 2: about 32, 33. Kind of like brown hair, tall. Ex-con,
- 23:36Speaker 2: I think. Either he told me or somebody told me
- 23:38Speaker 2: at the time.
- 23:38Speaker 5: You knew he was an ex-con and you gave him
- 23:40Speaker 5: your gun?
- 23:40Speaker 2: Yeah, but I didn't tell him to shoot anybody. I
- 23:42Speaker 2: made a point of telling him that.
- 23:43Speaker 6: Dumb jerk.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Especially shooting a cop. All he was supposed to do
- 23:46Speaker 2: was fire up in the air if those punks came around,
- 23:48Speaker 2: scare him away. To help me, that's the only time
- 23:50Speaker 2: he was supposed to use the gun.
- 23:51Speaker 4: I told him that.
- 23:52Speaker 7: How much of a story do I know?
- 23:53Speaker 6: Can you prove it? Sure, I can prove it.
- 23:54Speaker 2: You can ask Mike, Mike Thelmer. He'll tell you the
- 23:56Speaker 2: same thing. You can ask Gleason himself, a dumb jerk.
- 23:59Speaker 6: Mike said he.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Wasn't too sharp, a little punchy, wasn't quite right in
- 24:02Speaker 2: the head.
- 24:02Speaker 5: What's that?
- 24:03Speaker 2: I said he was a little punchy, wasn't quite right
- 24:05Speaker 2: in the head, Gleason.
- 24:06Speaker 5: You mean you met him in a bar. You didn't
- 24:08Speaker 5: know anything about his background. You knew he was an ex-con.
- 24:10Speaker 5: You had an idea he wasn't too sharp. Maybe he
- 24:11Speaker 5: wasn't all there. Is that right?
- 24:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that's about it.
- 24:14Speaker 5: And you put this man in a spot where you
- 24:15Speaker 5: knew he'd be in trouble, and then you gave him
- 24:16Speaker 5: a gun. Is that right? How about it, Delano?
- 24:19Speaker 2: What are you looking at me for? I told the
- 24:21Speaker 2: dumb jerk what to do. I didn't tell him to
- 24:22Speaker 2: shoot anybody. Punch drunk, booze down. Truth, I didn't have
- 24:26Speaker 2: a thing to do with it. I hired the guy,
- 24:27Speaker 2: that's all. It's not my fault.
- 24:30Speaker 6: What are you looking at?
- 24:30Speaker 2: I wasn't even there. I didn't even know about it.
- 24:32Speaker 2: I didn't kill that cop.
- 24:34Speaker 5: Didn't you? 9.23 a.m., we continued questioning George Delano. He
- 24:43Speaker 5: told us that he'd instructed Jake Gleason, the ex-convict, to
- 24:46Speaker 5: stand guard at the rear of the store where the
- 24:48Speaker 5: gambling games were held. He insisted that his instructions to
- 24:51Speaker 5: Gleason were that if he had to fire the gun
- 24:53Speaker 5: at all, it was to fire it in the air,
- 24:55Speaker 5: and then only as a warning signal in case of
- 24:57Speaker 5: robbery attempt. Delano was detained by homicide officers pending further investigation.
- 25:02Speaker 5: We checked the name and description of Jake Gleason through
- 25:04Speaker 5: R & I and found his record and mugshot. We
- 25:07Speaker 5: showed the mug to Delano and he identified it. Gleason's
- 25:10Speaker 5: record showed him to be on active parole. 10.30 a.m.,
- 25:14Speaker 5: we contacted the parole office. They gave us his address,
- 25:16Speaker 5: and Bill and I checked it out. Second-rate hotel on
- 25:19Speaker 5: South Flower Street. The manager told us Gleason had left
- 25:22Speaker 5: the hotel about 7.45 that morning and that he was
- 25:24Speaker 5: not expected back until after 6 o'clock that night. He
- 25:27Speaker 5: also told us there was a chance we might locate
- 25:29Speaker 5: him in one of the bars around the neighborhood. 10.45,
- 25:33Speaker 5: we started making the rounds of the bars in the
- 25:34Speaker 5: immediate vicinity. The third place we stopped at was practically deserted.
- 25:38Speaker 5: The jukebox at the back of the place was turned
- 25:40Speaker 5: up to full volume. There was a smell of disinfectant, whiskey,
- 25:43Speaker 5: and stale perfume. There was one customer drinking at the
- 25:46Speaker 5: far end of the bar. It was Gleason.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Stand up, Gleason.
- 25:49Speaker 5: Police officers.
- 25:50Speaker 6: All right.
- 25:51Speaker 5: Shake them down, Bill.
- 25:52Speaker 4: Clean, Joe.
- 25:53Speaker 3: All right. Hands in the back of you.
- 25:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:57Speaker 3: You want to kill that jukebox, Bill? Yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 5: All right, you know why we want you.
- 26:06Speaker 6: Yeah, I know. I knew there wasn't any sense running.
- 26:09Speaker 6: I knew you'd be around.
- 26:10Speaker 5: All right, let's go.
- 26:11Speaker 6: Could you do me a favor? I mean, wait a minute,
- 26:13Speaker 6: just a minute.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 26:13Speaker 6: I'd just like to tell you I didn't mean it.
- 26:16Speaker 6: I guess it's my own fault. I shot him. I
- 26:18Speaker 6: shouldn't have had the gun. Shouldn't have taken the job.
- 26:20Speaker 6: I shot him. I didn't mean it.
- 26:22Speaker 5: All right, come on.
- 26:22Speaker 6: There ought to be a way, don't you think? I mean,
- 26:24Speaker 6: there really ought to be a way. What's that? I
- 26:27Speaker 6: didn't mean it. No reason to kill him. I didn't
- 26:28Speaker 6: even know him. I just keep thinking... There's only a
- 26:32Speaker 6: way if I could take it back again, you know?
- 26:33Speaker 3: Yeah, we know.
- 26:34Speaker 6: I mean, if I could go back and change it,
- 26:36Speaker 6: make it all different. I mean, right from the beginning,
- 26:38Speaker 6: I wouldn't even look at a gun. I'd change everything.
- 26:40Speaker 8: I bet I would.
- 26:41Speaker 6: I wouldn't even look at a gun. Only had the chance,
- 26:44Speaker 6: you know? Second chance. There ought to be a way.
- 26:47Speaker 6: Second chance.
- 26:48Speaker 5: You started with a gun, Jake. Yeah. You never had
- 26:50Speaker 5: a first one.
- 26:50Speaker 8: The story.
- 26:55Speaker 2: You have just heard was true.
- 27:01Speaker 3: The names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 27:03Speaker 4: On May 22nd, trial was held in Superior Court, Department 88,
