Transcript
- 0:28Speaker 1: Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode, a little thing we
- 0:32Speaker 1: like to call the after party. This is the show
- 0:34Speaker 1: after the show, the party after the party, the bridge
- 0:36Speaker 1: to get from one full episode or Disgraceland to the other.
- 0:38Speaker 1: The backyard, to dig into the dirt, our mission to
- 0:42Speaker 1: uncover the truth and to confront the myth, to reclaim
- 0:44Speaker 1: the story. On this bonus episode, we discuss how Oasis
- 0:48Speaker 1: is this year's actual World Cup winner. We take a
- 0:52Speaker 1: look at Happy Mondays in their rock and roll debauchery.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Preview next week's new episode, where you'll find out how
- 0:57Speaker 1: Dolly Parton defied the expectations of startup in more ways
- 1:01Speaker 1: than you thought. Plus we get into your emails, comments, dms,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and as always, a whole lot of rosie. This is
- 1:06Speaker 1: the podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent
- 1:09Speaker 1: thinkers who know that the best history is the history
- 1:12Speaker 1: that gets buried. Disgrace Lands, where I tell the stories
- 1:15Speaker 1: they didn't want told, the kind you'll end up telling
- 1:17Speaker 1: to someone else. All right, justs goes, Let's get into it.
- 1:29Speaker 1: All right, we are here, we are all together. I'm
- 1:32Speaker 1: playing hurt today. I got something I came down with
- 1:34Speaker 1: this morning and man, it's hitting me. It's hitting me hard.
- 1:37Speaker 1: But you know what, I can't be stopped. I cannot
- 1:40Speaker 1: be contained because I have a game today. All right.
- 1:46Speaker 1: We all have a game today, three o'clock Eastern England Argentina.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I too have, somehow, like most people that I've spoken
- 1:55Speaker 1: to over the last few weeks, managed to become a
- 1:58Speaker 1: soccer fan this summer. All right, the world has been riveting,
- 2:02Speaker 1: and it's been pretty rock and roll. Okay, rock and
- 2:05Speaker 1: roll is gloriously at the center of the World Cup
- 2:08Speaker 1: this year thanks to England's team and their fans. The
- 2:12Speaker 1: images of star player Harry Kane locking arms with his
- 2:15Speaker 1: teammates after the victory against Mexico and running to the
- 2:18Speaker 1: stands while being deafened by England supporters serenading their team
- 2:22Speaker 1: with Oasis's Wonderwall was riveting television. So by the time
- 2:27Speaker 1: you hear this episode, it's gonna be Thursday at least.
- 2:30Speaker 2: And England will have either won or lost against Argentina
- 2:35Speaker 2: for the.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Semi finals, and Wonderwall will either be further cemented into
- 2:39Speaker 1: the zeitgeist or put on mute for the time being.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Hopefully we're still hearing Noel Liams chorus though, ringing in
- 2:46Speaker 1: our ears, and hopefully we're getting ready for Caine's men
- 2:49Speaker 1: to take on Spain in the finals this weekend. Go England,
- 2:52Speaker 1: is what I'm saying. And yes, it's because of rock
- 2:55Speaker 1: and Roll. It's because of Wonderwall. Before the World Cup,
- 2:58Speaker 1: I could give a shit about English soccer players, and
- 3:02Speaker 1: then I got pulled into the action like everybody else.
- 3:04Speaker 1: At first, I found myself glued to a big outdoor
- 3:07Speaker 1: screen in a park in Budapest with my family while
- 3:11Speaker 1: on vacation, rooting for the US against Australia.
- 3:14Speaker 2: As the Cup progressed.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I was watching games without the United States just got
- 3:19Speaker 1: pulled into it.
- 3:20Speaker 2: It was curious, what's all this about, you know?
- 3:24Speaker 1: And I found myself rooting for the underdogs so that
- 3:27Speaker 1: the US would theoretically have an easier path to winning
- 3:32Speaker 1: the tournament. They were eliminated though, in the last round,
- 3:36Speaker 1: but it didn't matter because by that time the games
- 3:38Speaker 1: themselves had pulled me in. Okay, the game, this game,
- 3:42Speaker 1: this amazing game. Subtle violence, it's lulling vibe, flow and rhythm,
- 3:48Speaker 1: and the game's quick flashes of aggression when the players
- 3:52Speaker 1: break through with the goals. The game itself pulled me in.
- 3:55Speaker 1: There's a weird sensation to watching this game. It's different
- 3:59Speaker 1: from any other sport I've watched. It's like some flow
- 4:03Speaker 1: state high. You get glued into the action and then
- 4:07Speaker 1: a goal happens and you're euphoric for an instant and
- 4:10Speaker 1: then immediately you're thrust right back into the tide that
- 4:13Speaker 1: doesn't really stop for about two straight hours, except for
- 4:16Speaker 1: those pesky hydration breaks, of course, which are quite controversial,
- 4:20Speaker 1: as I'm coming to learn.
- 4:21Speaker 2: But back to rock and roll, all right.
- 4:23Speaker 1: I intended to root for Mexico over England in the
- 4:26Speaker 1: Round of sixteen. I really did, because fuck England. I'm American,
- 4:31Speaker 1: and despite our own insane geopolitical history of oppression and corruption,
- 4:37Speaker 1: rooting for imperialists it just ain't my bag, baby, so Mexico.
- 4:40Speaker 2: But I couldn't root for Mexico. I tried. It was
- 4:43Speaker 2: the way they played.
- 4:44Speaker 1: They annoyed me just watching them, the way they're fucking annoying,
- 4:49Speaker 1: and the crowd was on their side, and I like
- 4:51Speaker 1: an underdog because like I mentioned, I'm an American. And
- 4:54Speaker 1: then England went down a man and had to play
- 4:57Speaker 1: with just ten players against Mexico was eleven, so I was.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I was in and I like the Harry Kane dude,
- 5:04Speaker 1: I do.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I just like him. I like him on the field,
- 5:07Speaker 2: I like how he plays. And there was the whole
- 5:10Speaker 2: Wonderwall of it all.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I knew that in the moment in that game, because
- 5:14Speaker 1: a few days earlier I was rooting hard against England
- 5:17Speaker 1: and four dier Congo and dier Congo had them on
- 5:19Speaker 1: the ropes and they almost beat him, but Caine and
- 5:22Speaker 1: the boys came back and won, and the stands went
- 5:25Speaker 1: nuts with Wonderwall and I caught it and I was like,
- 5:27Speaker 1: what the fuck is this? And then I saw Courtney
- 5:30Speaker 1: Love on Instagram waving an English flag talking about soccer, and.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I was like, cool.
- 5:35Speaker 1: So when the Mexico game happened, when that was happening,
- 5:37Speaker 1: I should say, and my allegiance was shifting. Part of
- 5:41Speaker 1: the reason was that I was hoping to catch a
- 5:43Speaker 1: little more of that Wonderwall magic at the end of
- 5:45Speaker 1: the game. And what do you know, England beat Mexico
- 5:47Speaker 1: and anyway, here's Wonderwall and it.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Was fucking glorious, man, it was awesome. It's fucking you Fork.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Like I said, all these people just so happy.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And I know all winning team soccer fans, football fans
- 6:02Speaker 1: are happy in the World Cup, but they.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Don't have wonderwall Man. That's the difference.
- 6:08Speaker 1: It's glorious, or is Liam Gallagher tweeted after hearing his
- 6:11Speaker 1: voice ring out through as Techas Stadium. I sounded fucking biblical.
- 6:15Speaker 1: He said something like that, It's perfect England. You are
- 6:19Speaker 1: my team for the rest of the tournament, however long
- 6:21Speaker 1: that may be all right. Hopefully again when you're hearing this,
- 6:24Speaker 1: England's on their way to play in the finals against
- 6:27Speaker 1: against Spain, but who knows, it might be Argentina. One
- 6:32Speaker 1: of the coolest things back to rock and roll here.
- 6:34Speaker 1: One of the coolest things that I've learned in all
- 6:35Speaker 1: my research on Disgraceland subjects is ha Liam's brother Noel
- 6:40Speaker 1: developed his musicality. It was from soccer or football. It
- 6:46Speaker 1: was from sitting in the stadium watching his team, Man
- 6:50Speaker 1: City and listening to their supporters. It's directly responsible for
- 6:56Speaker 1: Noel Gallagher's and theemic songwriting in Oasis.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Here's what I mean.
- 7:00Speaker 1: This is from part one of our two parter a
- 7:02Speaker 1: an Oasis mat give them the clipp four years old
- 7:07Speaker 1: with his dad at Maine Road Soccer Stadium, the hallow
- 7:10Speaker 1: ground where Manchester City's sky blues hovered above the drudgery
- 7:13Speaker 1: of working class Manchester, England. Noel Gallagher sat amongst two
- 7:17Speaker 1: thousand other kids, stashed away in the stands by their
- 7:20Speaker 1: fathers who fucked off to the stadium's bars. And it
- 7:23Speaker 1: was here that one of the cornerstones of Noel Gallagher's
- 7:26Speaker 1: songwriting was cemented by the rockous sound of man City's
- 7:29Speaker 1: goal celebrations, thunderous rolls of noise from the bounce of
- 7:33Speaker 1: stadium attendees, poe going out of their seats and erupting
- 7:36Speaker 1: into song whenever City found the back of the net,
- 7:40Speaker 1: a full throaded, community wide chorus of the working class,
- 7:43Speaker 1: united in their support of and commitment to their club.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Warring their team's chance. Boys in Blue were really not.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Here nineteen sixty two and the show stopper Blue Moon,
- 7:53Speaker 1: and not in the lame ass, rogers and heart style
- 7:55Speaker 1: that Elvis Presley popularized with his falsetto. At Maine Road,
- 8:00Speaker 1: the Moon was shouted staccato style, a sort of pre
- 8:03Speaker 1: punk gang vocal, being hammered out by thirty five thousand strong.
- 8:07Speaker 1: It was simple, easy to latch onto, anthemic, fucking epic
- 8:12Speaker 1: nol Gallagher would.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Never forget it.
- 8:15Speaker 1: So, like I said, rock and Roll has me rooting
- 8:18Speaker 1: for England. Okay, no offense to the rest of the
- 8:21Speaker 1: teams in the World Cup who remained after the US
- 8:23Speaker 1: gut bounced. But England has the richest musical history. They
- 8:28Speaker 1: really do. But who knows. Again, like I said before,
- 8:30Speaker 1: by the time you hear this, maybe Messi magic has
- 8:32Speaker 1: struck and England has been dismissed. Let's hope not. If
- 8:37Speaker 1: that opens, If that happens opens.
- 8:40Speaker 2: If that happens, I guess I'm rooting for Messi. I
- 8:44Speaker 2: like that guy too.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I do because not just because he's like, you know,
- 8:48Speaker 1: the Michael Jordan of soccer, but like Mike, like Mike Kane,
- 8:53Speaker 1: like Michael Kane, like Harry Kane. Messi's got hair that
- 8:56Speaker 1: is that is not decidedly on ll Okay, like ninety
- 9:01Speaker 1: percent of the players in this tournament. I don't know
- 9:03Speaker 1: what's up with the soccer haircut, the shaved bowl cut,
- 9:06Speaker 1: Lloyd Christmas starter kit. I can't stand it. Everybody's got it.
- 9:09Speaker 1: It's like ninety percent of the players have this haircut.
- 9:11Speaker 2: It's awful.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Seth and I are going to get into this riveting
- 9:15Speaker 1: subject of soccer player's hair to some degree, along with
- 9:20Speaker 1: more World Cup talk and behind the scenes look at
- 9:23Speaker 1: the new episodes of Disgrace sand that we're putting together
- 9:26Speaker 1: for you right now.
- 9:26Speaker 2: We're trying to figure out what we're putting together right now.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Some of these are coming from your suggestion, some of
- 9:31Speaker 1: them are just stories we've wanted to tell ourselves for
- 9:35Speaker 1: a long while, and we're trying to figure out which
- 9:39Speaker 1: ones are next. Okay, And specifically, I'm trying to figure
- 9:42Speaker 1: out what story I'm going to sit down and research
- 9:46Speaker 1: next week and then right the week after or.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Two weeks after, I should say.
- 9:51Speaker 1: That's all happening in the exclusive section of this year
- 9:54Speaker 1: after Party. Go to Disgrace sampod dot com to sign
- 9:57Speaker 1: up and get exclusive content, behind the scenes content like this,
- 10:01Speaker 1: plus add free listening on everything we do here, all
- 10:04Speaker 1: right in your.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Feed right now.
- 10:05Speaker 1: We have our Happy Monday's episode coming up next right
- 10:09Speaker 1: after this after party, our two part Rewind episode from
- 10:13Speaker 1: our archive on the Notorious Big originally released in May
- 10:17Speaker 1: of twenty twenty one.
- 10:18Speaker 2: This episode gets into who I believe murdered the hip
- 10:22Speaker 2: hop icon.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Now you're not gonna want to miss these episodes, all right, listen,
- 10:26Speaker 1: and you're gonna find out what Sugar Night's payroll, what
- 10:29Speaker 1: a mysterious ninety five Chevy and Pala at a red
- 10:33Speaker 1: light next to Biggie Small's on the night he died,
- 10:36Speaker 1: and a cop who was connected to both Big and
- 10:41Speaker 1: pak all has to do with Biggie Small's death. Perhaps
- 10:45Speaker 1: Tubacs as well?
- 10:47Speaker 2: All right?
- 10:47Speaker 1: Then after the rewind, coming next Tuesday, our brand new
- 10:50Speaker 1: episode on Dolly Parton. Just a question, why can't female
- 10:54Speaker 1: global music starts just make music and not have to
- 10:56Speaker 1: deal with threats to their lives? That's the question I'm
- 10:59Speaker 1: asking it, all right. This story gets into those death threats,
- 11:02Speaker 1: gets into the murder ballad that almost was Dolly Parton's career,
- 11:05Speaker 1: and it tells the story of one of the greatest
- 11:07Speaker 1: comebacks ever. So when you're listening to the new Disgraceland
- 11:11Speaker 1: Dolly Parton episode, be thinking about artists like Dolly and
- 11:16Speaker 1: give us a call at six one seven nine oh
- 11:18Speaker 1: six six sixty three eight and let us know who
- 11:21Speaker 1: your favorite crossover artist is. Okay, Dolly Parton, She's thought
- 11:26Speaker 1: of as a country artist, but she has had massive
- 11:30Speaker 1: pop hits.
- 11:31Speaker 2: She's crossed over. Is the point? So which crossover artist
- 11:37Speaker 2: is your favorite? Or what's the best example of a great.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Crossover artist other than Dolly Parton from music history? Can
- 11:43Speaker 1: be from any genre, can be from country to pop
- 11:46Speaker 1: like Dolly Rapp, to rock like the Beasties. There's a
- 11:49Speaker 1: million examples. Who's the greatest artist to go from one
- 11:52Speaker 1: genre to the other? Let us know six one seven,

- 12:27Speaker 1: to be a rock and roll star, then listen now
- 12:28Speaker 1: here what I say. I'm in the phone booth, It's
- 12:30Speaker 1: the one across the hall discos. I'm hanging on the
- 12:32Speaker 1: telephone with you. Six one seven nine oh six six
- 12:34Speaker 1: six three eight. We asked two questions relative to our
- 12:37Speaker 1: disgrace lamd episode on Happy Mondays, what's the most rockstar
- 12:41Speaker 1: that you've ever been and who's the most transgressive hedonistic
- 12:45Speaker 1: Debaucher's wild, drugged out band of all time? Got a
- 12:49Speaker 1: bunch of different answers, uh coming in and all from
- 12:52Speaker 1: all different ways. Want to go to Anita in the
- 12:55Speaker 1: five to one two. Here with her text, Jake, I
- 12:57Speaker 1: just finished the Happy Monday's episode fantastic job.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I loved it.
- 13:02Speaker 1: To answer your question this week, this is the most
- 13:05Speaker 1: rock star shit that has ever happened to me? Yes,
- 13:08Speaker 1: that is me on stage with the Damned. I was
- 13:12Speaker 1: tossed up on stage during their finale Anti Pope and
- 13:16Speaker 1: Dave grabbed a hold of me and we sang together.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Captain Sensible came over and draped his guitar over me and.
- 13:22Speaker 2: I closed the show.
- 13:23Speaker 1: I got a hug and a kiss from both Dave
- 13:25Speaker 1: and the Captain. Greatest night of my life. Rock a
- 13:28Speaker 1: rolla Anita in the five to one two, This is perfect.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I love it. Thank you very much. Delbert.
- 13:34Speaker 1: I got your voicemail and Delbert, you're too debauch, too
- 13:39Speaker 1: rock and roll for the airwaves, man, even for the rss. Okay,
- 13:44Speaker 1: can't get you in here too.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Just a little too much, my man, too much. I'm
- 13:49Speaker 2: glad to hear you're alive. I truly am.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I'm happy to hear you made it and that you're
- 13:55Speaker 1: still kicking down there in Louisville, all right. Appreciate the message, though.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Let's check out this recommendation from the eighth eight.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Hey, it's Michael who from Bowling Green, Kentucky. I was
- 14:07Speaker 3: just wondering if you ever have our will or could
- 14:10Speaker 3: be planning on what would consider doing an episode of
- 14:13Speaker 3: Craft the UK Punk Man and the nr CO punk
- 14:17Speaker 3: band Craft and Gee Voucher and all the different members
- 14:21Speaker 3: of Crafts and kind of the backstory and the connection
- 14:24Speaker 3: to Tumblewamba. I think that would be a really interesting
- 14:27Speaker 3: podcast to hear you do, because you're the best when
- 14:30Speaker 3: it comes to behind the scene rock and roll podcast stuff.
- 14:34Speaker 3: So thanks uh, looking forward to hearing it back. Appreciate it,
- 14:37Speaker 3: have a good one and keep up with the great work.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Michael.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Appreciate the call man, Thanks so much, great suggestion. Don't
- 14:44Speaker 1: have it on our list, It's now on the list.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Appreciate you, Crass. Appreciate all the discos sending in their recommendations.
- 14:51Speaker 1: We need them, man, keep them coming. Okay, let's go
- 14:55Speaker 1: to the four to one seven.
- 14:56Speaker 4: Great.
- 14:57Speaker 5: This is Josh from the four one seven Man. I
- 15:00Speaker 5: love your show. I was listening to your Sonic Youth
- 15:02Speaker 5: episode and you were talking about married couples in rock
- 15:06Speaker 5: and roll bands, and there's one that I don't think
- 15:09Speaker 5: you know about that you really should. One of my
- 15:11Speaker 5: favorite bands out there is called Shovels and Rope. They're
- 15:13Speaker 5: a married couple out of South Carolina. And not only
- 15:17Speaker 5: are they a married couple in rock and roll, they're
- 15:19Speaker 5: the only two people in the band, so everything you
- 15:22Speaker 5: hear is just the two people up on stage, and
- 15:24Speaker 5: they are magic on stage together. They got several albums
- 15:29Speaker 5: out I really think you should check them out. Maybe
- 15:32Speaker 5: do a show on them sometime. They're really they're a
- 15:34Speaker 5: great show. They're still touring around. Maybe catch a show
- 15:37Speaker 5: for them sometime. Again, Love your show, man, Take it easy.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Yeah, Josh, amazing call.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Thanks so much, dude. I don't know Shovels and Rope.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I know the name, I've seen the names on festival
- 15:47Speaker 1: bills before. I know nothing about the band, and I
- 15:51Speaker 1: love this idea that married couples can make it in bands,
- 15:55Speaker 1: because it's an insane lifestyle in business to try to
- 16:01Speaker 1: just maintain a marriage, never mind romance. I mean maintaining
- 16:05Speaker 1: romance and marriage is hard over time anyways, and hearing
- 16:10Speaker 1: about when it works is inspiring in any world, really,
- 16:15Speaker 1: but especially in music for sure. And you know you
- 16:17Speaker 1: made me think when you mentioned shovels and rope, you
- 16:20Speaker 1: made me think of another one that you're probably hip two.
- 16:24Speaker 1: And I'm not even sure if this is accurate. But
- 16:25Speaker 1: Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, and is it Jillian or
- 16:29Speaker 1: Gillian by the way, I never fucking know. I apologize Gillian, Gillian.
- 16:33Speaker 1: I've heard of a million different ways. Same thing with
- 16:35Speaker 1: Gillian Flynn. Gillian Flynn, you know what I mean. It's
- 16:38Speaker 1: but whatever, you know what I'm saying. Gillian Welch and
- 16:41Speaker 1: David Rawlings. I believe they're married, and they're fucking great.
- 16:45Speaker 1: They are so good, they're so fantastic. Seen them live twice,
- 16:52Speaker 1: definitely once, no twice, and I particularly remember seeing them
- 17:00Speaker 1: the House of Blues in Boston right around the time
- 17:04Speaker 1: of that what's that record called what Time the Revelator?
- 17:07Speaker 1: Is it called Time the Revelator? That album there, fantastic
- 17:10Speaker 1: album whatever it's called.
- 17:12Speaker 2: You know what I'm talking about.
- 17:14Speaker 1: It's kind of just after they worked with Ryan Adams
- 17:17Speaker 1: on Heartbreaker, and I don't even think Helse of Blues
- 17:20Speaker 1: was House of Blues yet. I think it was still
- 17:22Speaker 1: called the Avalanche and they destroyed. They were so great.
- 17:26Speaker 2: I think they're married.
- 17:28Speaker 1: If not, hey, good excuse for a recommendation there, Gillian Slash,
- 17:31Speaker 1: Jillian Watch and David Rowling. Someone please call me and
- 17:34Speaker 1: tell me how to pronounce her name and I'll apologize
- 17:37Speaker 1: to her when we get it right. Okay, six one seven,
- 17:41Speaker 1: nine of six, six sixty three eight. You want to
- 17:43Speaker 1: leave me a voicemail? You want to send me a text?
- 17:45Speaker 1: Onto the subject of Happy Mondays this week's full episode
- 17:49Speaker 1: of disgrace Land, we asked the question what's the most hedonistic,
- 17:54Speaker 1: debaucherous transgressive band from music history? And, oh boy, do
- 17:57Speaker 1: we get a lot of comments. I'm just going to
- 17:59Speaker 1: click through a bunch of the thez it from where
- 18:01Speaker 1: Instagram and it's I mean, this is great. This is
- 18:06Speaker 1: like fantastic, not just recommendations on what to listen to,
- 18:10Speaker 1: but recommendations on podcasts. We've done podcasts we can do.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I'm going to click through a bunch of these because
- 18:15Speaker 1: this is a ton ef and good music rights MC five.
- 18:17Speaker 2: The White Panther Party.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Deserves its own one crazy Night style movie, absolutely does,
- 18:22Speaker 1: and we get into that in the MC five episode
- 18:25Speaker 1: a little bit. Jeff Baker eight three five up in
- 18:28Speaker 1: Boston says, hey might have to go with the Luvin Brothers.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Fantastic recommendation. And I know a little bit about the
- 18:34Speaker 1: Louvin's story. I need to know more about it. We
- 18:36Speaker 1: need to do an episode on them. Too Fast for Love,
- 18:40Speaker 1: Too Fast for Love images. Excuse me, just writes in
- 18:44Speaker 1: Wilson Phillips. They're kidding, can't ground visual? Hey, butthole Surfers
- 18:51Speaker 1: should be on this list. The new documentary on them
- 18:53Speaker 1: is amazing. I want to talk about that for a
- 18:55Speaker 1: second before I read the rest of that. I don't
- 18:57Speaker 1: know a lot about butthole surfers. I seen butthole surfers,
- 19:00Speaker 1: I think twice. But anyways, Gibby came up a bunch
- 19:03Speaker 1: in the John Fruchiante research that I just finished. I
- 19:07Speaker 1: just finished putting that episode together for you guys, and
- 19:11Speaker 1: complete and total psychopath and there's footage I saw them
- 19:15Speaker 1: on the Lallapaluza tour, the first one, and I remember
- 19:20Speaker 1: I think I remember hearing about I don't remember seeing it.
- 19:23Speaker 1: The shotgun on stage. There's footage of this online. You
- 19:27Speaker 1: can see Gibbey Haynes, some butthole surfers on stage at
- 19:30Speaker 1: Lollapalooza firing off.
- 19:32Speaker 2: A fucking shotgun on stage. What's that all about? You
- 19:39Speaker 2: get away with it?
- 19:41Speaker 1: So I can't imagine what this documentary is. I don't
- 19:43Speaker 1: know what it is, but I need to get into it.
- 19:47Speaker 1: See Jewels, Rights and the Birthday Party. They were all
- 19:49Speaker 1: wildly insand and made great music. Nick Cave was mild
- 19:52Speaker 1: compared to Tracy Pugh, the bass guitarist. The documentary, recently
- 19:57Speaker 1: released Mutiny in Heaven, captures the full story beautifully. A
- 20:01Speaker 1: definite must watch. I love this, Thank you, See Jewels.
- 20:05Speaker 1: I will absolutely watch this. I've been looking for an
- 20:07Speaker 1: angle into Nick kay for a while and this might
- 20:09Speaker 1: help me out. Thank you all right, This one is
- 20:12Speaker 1: the one I want to get to. Richie Underscore V
- 20:14Speaker 1: one two three Rights saying Hey Believe it or not?
- 20:16Speaker 1: Country star Johnny Rodriguez, his piano player slash tour manager
- 20:20Speaker 1: was a regular guy at my bar, and the stories
- 20:23Speaker 1: that that guy told me, if even half of them
- 20:25Speaker 1: were true, Johnny belongs on the list. And I wrote that, really,
- 20:29Speaker 1: I wonder what stories there are. I give us a taste.
- 20:31Speaker 1: And someone named Scott underscore Ward wrote, Johnny did jail
- 20:34Speaker 1: time for stealing a go.
- 20:35Speaker 2: I don't know what that's.
- 20:36Speaker 1: About, but I think there's murder connected to this story.
- 20:39Speaker 1: And you know, there's a bunch of other mentions here
- 20:41Speaker 1: though the gig allens the Norwegian black metal, whole bunch
- 20:46Speaker 1: of stuff, weird spring rites in any band involved in
- 20:50Speaker 1: the Boston hardcore scene in the early odds. I'm not
- 20:53Speaker 1: touching that. I like being on this side of the ground. Tsol.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Now that's funny. That's not funny. That's actually really interesting
- 21:03Speaker 1: to me.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Jack in that.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Whole scene, great great answers, guys, appreciate it. Thank you.

- 22:42Speaker 1: the subject of Happy Mondays, there are many musicians, many
- 22:46Speaker 1: actors who have run for office Sonny Bono, jellybiaffro Arnold Schwarzenegger,
- 22:51Speaker 1: Ronald Reagan, but not many have created their own political party.
- 22:58Speaker 1: In twenty fourteen, Mark also known as Bez from Happy
- 23:02Speaker 1: Mondays founded the We Are the Reality Party. But Bez
- 23:07Speaker 1: he's not your usual musician. Okay, he doesn't write songs,
- 23:11Speaker 1: he doesn't play any traditional instruments. But what he does
- 23:14Speaker 1: do is play the Moroccos along with his signature quote
- 23:16Speaker 1: unquote freaky dancing in England's most hedonistic and transgressive band ever,
- 23:21Speaker 1: Happy Mondays. So when his party ran for seats in
- 23:23Speaker 1: three English constituencies, people were amused and despite running on
- 23:29Speaker 1: a platform of free energy, free food and free anything.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Bez in his platform. His party here only received seven
- 23:36Speaker 1: hundred and three votes. Okay, Bez is not the usual musician,
- 23:39Speaker 1: that's the point. And he definitely was not the usual politician.
- 23:42Speaker 1: He's Bez from the Happy Mondays. And if you want
- 23:45Speaker 1: to hear more about that, you got to check out
- 23:47Speaker 1: the latest episode of Disgrace Sam Don't Go Anywhere discos.
- 23:49Speaker 1: We'll be back right after this, a few emails and more.
- 24:02Speaker 2: All right, we are back, guys.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Thanks for hanging in there with us. I don't know
- 24:07Speaker 1: what I've come down with here, but it's coming fast.
- 24:10Speaker 5: Man.
- 24:11Speaker 2: It sucks because you know, I want to watch that
- 24:14Speaker 2: game today.
- 24:15Speaker 1: I'm still gonna watch it. I'm gonna play hurt. Okay,
- 24:20Speaker 1: nothing's gonna keep me off the pitch, That's what I'm saying.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Disgraceing Pod at gmail dot com. You guys want to
- 24:26Speaker 1: email me on any subject at all, that's how you
- 24:29Speaker 1: do it. This one comes from Jeremy Stein subject wildest
- 24:33Speaker 1: thing seen at a show back in nineteen ninety one.
- 24:36Speaker 1: I was at a Fishbone Primus show in Toronto and
- 24:39Speaker 1: in the middle of one of the songs, Angelo, the
- 24:41Speaker 1: lead of Fishbone, climbed up the speaker stack to the
- 24:44Speaker 1: balcony while singing, worked his way to the back of
- 24:46Speaker 1: the theater, stood on the edge of the balcony and
- 24:48Speaker 1: dropped off.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Knowing, of course, hit his fans would catch him.
- 24:52Speaker 1: As a twenty year old, this blew my skull that
- 24:55Speaker 1: someone would do this.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Fast forward to.
- 24:59Speaker 1: About five years ago, Fishbone came around again, and this
- 25:02Speaker 1: time there are may be twenty dudes in the crowd,
- 25:05Speaker 1: and all of them were in their forties.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Sure enough, in the middle of a.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Song, Angel did the same thing, dove into the crowd,
- 25:11Speaker 1: knowing that this fans would catch him.
- 25:12Speaker 2: And they did.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Even though my back hurt for a week, it was
- 25:15Speaker 1: still worth it. Jeremy, I hope you're back. It's okay.
- 25:21Speaker 1: First and foremost. Second, I admire your commitment to Fishbone,
- 25:27Speaker 1: great band, Truth and Soul, which is one of the
- 25:30Speaker 1: greatest albums it start to finish, no skips, incredible. That
- 25:34Speaker 1: album doesn't get enough enough talkie talk. All right, what
- 25:38Speaker 1: are you guys watching? I am almost all caught up,
- 25:42Speaker 1: No I am, I'm all caught up with Cape Fear
- 25:45Speaker 1: and I am loving it. Zeth Lundy, you don't know
- 25:48Speaker 1: what the fuck you're talking about. Zeth doesn't like this show.
- 25:51Speaker 1: It's great. You know, it's not you know, au tour cinema.
- 25:55Speaker 1: But it's great television, scary, actually scared, and I'm digging it,
- 26:02Speaker 1: so I'm almost done there. I'm also loving Sugar. I
- 26:04Speaker 1: think I talked to you guys about Sugar last week.
- 26:06Speaker 1: I can't remember. Sugar's great as well. Get a new
- 26:08Speaker 1: episode to watch tonight if I can make it that far,
- 26:11Speaker 1: and then, of course I'm watching everything Zeth Lundy tells
- 26:14Speaker 1: me to watch in the hollywood Land screening room. If
- 26:17Speaker 1: you don't know about the Hollywoodland screening Room, it's Zeth's
- 26:20Speaker 1: episode in the hollywood Land Feed on Fridays where he
- 26:23Speaker 1: tease up a film that we watch over the weekend
- 26:26Speaker 1: required viewing, and then we come back and we talk
- 26:28Speaker 1: about it.
- 26:29Speaker 2: A week after.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Clinton Reese on Patreon says, Hey, I've been in the
- 26:34Speaker 1: habit lately of pausing the screening room during the playlist
- 26:38Speaker 1: segment and going to listen to the songs the good
- 26:40Speaker 1: Doctor that seth puts me onto from his list, And.
- 26:44Speaker 2: I heard that Arim song before. I just never learned
- 26:47Speaker 2: what the hell the title was. Thank you Jeth.
- 26:49Speaker 1: See, I'm not going to tell you what the title
- 26:51Speaker 1: of that song is here. You're gonna have to go
- 26:54Speaker 1: to the screening room and check that out. Point is,
- 26:56Speaker 1: we're learning stuff together in the screening room, not just
- 26:59Speaker 1: about music, but not just about movies, but about.
- 27:02Speaker 2: The music in the movies as well.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Okay, and we get to our recommendations, my music recommendations
- 27:07Speaker 1: jumping off of our movie conversation that happens in the
- 27:10Speaker 1: Hollywood Land rap party every week. We had a great
- 27:13Speaker 1: one this week. We were discussing songs about fashion. Okay,
- 27:17Speaker 1: this stems from our Gianni Versaci episode and I went
- 27:20Speaker 1: deep into some wormholes here and pulled out some choice
- 27:23Speaker 1: nugs that you're likely not going to get anywhere else.
- 27:26Speaker 1: And I can't wait for you to hear this. Go
- 27:29Speaker 1: to Hollywood Land and subscribe on the iHeartRadio, ap Apple
- 27:32Speaker 1: Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. You get three
- 27:36Speaker 1: episodes a week over there. Two of them are new,
- 27:38Speaker 1: one of them's an archive, plenty of content. Great conversation
- 27:41Speaker 1: with Zazi as a master. Make sure you're checking that out.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Zeth and I also talk once a month for now anyways,
- 27:47Speaker 1: once a month about our favorite music from our favorite movies.
- 27:51Speaker 1: It's our music in Film video podcast called this film
- 27:55Speaker 1: should be Played Loud, and we just we got a
- 27:59Speaker 1: new one coming next week right or at the end
- 28:03Speaker 1: of the month whenever that is on Do the Right Thing.
- 28:06Speaker 1: And I just I just watched the cut this morning.
- 28:10Speaker 1: It's the by far the best one we've done yet.
- 28:14Speaker 1: It's so good. It's it's a movie that we clearly
- 28:19Speaker 1: both love. The music in this movie is about as
- 28:22Speaker 1: impactful as music in a movie can get. Spike Lee
- 28:26Speaker 1: does things in a way that other filmmakers do not
- 28:29Speaker 1: when it comes to music. So it kicked off a
- 28:32Speaker 1: great conversation. And just you know, sweet Dick Willie Man,
- 28:35Speaker 1: Sweet Dick Willy is a poet and he needs to
- 28:37Speaker 1: be celebrated as much as possible in culture. And I
- 28:40Speaker 1: don't think that sweet Dick Willy has gotten enough of
- 28:42Speaker 1: a shake, if you know what I'm saying. And we
- 28:46Speaker 1: give all the shakes to sweet Dick Willie in this
- 28:48Speaker 1: film should be played loud, Matt, give us a little,
- 28:51Speaker 1: give us a little taste.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Will all the sort of like.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Hammon and Hahn over the influence of Public Enemy on
- 29:00Speaker 1: White America and whatever you know.
- 29:02Speaker 4: What I mean, like we were what they were worried about,
- 29:05Speaker 4: you know, like we were the kids in suburbia that
- 29:08Speaker 4: we're hearing this shit, you know, and and it really
- 29:12Speaker 4: it really changed me. It literally forced me to seek
- 29:15Speaker 4: out Malcolm X and to read his autobiography and it
- 29:19Speaker 4: forced me to really I mean that.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Video was like it was chilling. Oh the video that's
- 29:25Speaker 2: intrinsically galvanized.
- 29:26Speaker 5: I hate it.
- 29:27Speaker 2: It's intrinsically involved with this film, right, and the whole
- 29:30Speaker 2: thing together was just like it was like a wake
- 29:33Speaker 2: up call that summer. You know, I say summer.
- 29:35Speaker 1: I feel like I watched it during the summer because
- 29:37Speaker 1: summer is such the theme of the movie and the
- 29:39Speaker 1: song and the video.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Yeah, but I do remember.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I remember hanging up on High Street and clinting with
- 29:44Speaker 1: my friends and you know, looking for a buyer and
- 29:46Speaker 1: listening to the song when it came out on a
- 29:48Speaker 1: boom box and like just it was constantly being played.
- 29:51Speaker 2: It was it was a big part of our little zeitgeist.
- 29:55Speaker 6: Was this was my intro to like hip hop, to
- 29:57Speaker 6: like real hip hop, you know, like not no shade
- 30:01Speaker 6: to like tone logo or anything. But like, you know
- 30:03Speaker 6: what I mean and unlike you. I wasn't really familiar
- 30:05Speaker 6: with Public Enemy until this song happened. And this song
- 30:09Speaker 6: just like grabbed me and would not let go. And
- 30:12Speaker 6: and like I said, this was where I was like, shit,
- 30:15Speaker 6: this music is electric, you know, and I need to
- 30:17Speaker 6: hear more of it.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, it's it's my favorite Public Enemy recording. It is,
- 30:23Speaker 2: It is everything, and I.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Don't know much of I know, I don't know much
- 30:26Speaker 1: about the recording, but I know, you know, it's post
- 30:29Speaker 1: Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, which is their
- 30:31Speaker 1: classic album, right, that's the one that people consider like
- 30:34Speaker 1: their kind of masterpiece.
- 30:35Speaker 2: This comes out after it, right now, but it comes
- 30:37Speaker 2: out as a single right first.
- 30:39Speaker 6: Right, Well, it was conceived for this movie and it
- 30:43Speaker 6: might be the single greatest moment and recorded music history
- 30:47Speaker 6: where they had the explicit instructions where Spike Lee was like,
- 30:50Speaker 6: you need to make the anthem of the summer. I
- 30:53Speaker 6: need the biggest fucking song that's gonna speak to this
- 30:56Speaker 6: movie and speak to the culture and everything.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 30:59Speaker 6: And they came through on this challenge, you know. I
- 31:01Speaker 6: think Hank Shockley talked about how we wanted to make
- 31:04Speaker 6: it sound like the streets of New York sounded at
- 31:06Speaker 6: the time.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Oh he fucking killed it.
- 31:08Speaker 1: And all right, that is a preview of our do
- 31:13Speaker 1: the Right Thing episode from this film should be played loud.
- 31:17Speaker 1: That's coming up end of this month. Go to this
- 31:20Speaker 1: grace sampod dot com to sign up to be an
- 31:21Speaker 1: all access member so you can you can gain access
- 31:25Speaker 1: to this film should be played loud over on Patreon.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Next we we've already done the next months. Next month
- 31:32Speaker 1: is gonna be on Licorice Pizza, and then we need
- 31:34Speaker 1: your help figuring out what we're doing beyond that. We'll
- 31:36Speaker 1: get into the Patreon chat with all you and we'll
- 31:38Speaker 1: do that together. Okay, speaking of exclusive content, speaking to Zeth,
- 31:42Speaker 1: we're talking about a lot of stuff in the exclusive
- 31:43Speaker 1: section of this after party coming up right after this
- 31:46Speaker 1: we get into the World Cup. I don't even remember
- 31:49Speaker 1: what the point of our conversation was, but we just
- 31:51Speaker 1: kind of fell into this conversation, a real kind of
- 31:54Speaker 1: behind the scenes thing about what we're writing, what's coming
- 31:58Speaker 1: up next, what we should be doing next, based in
- 32:01Speaker 1: part on your recommendations, and we thought you guys would
- 32:05Speaker 1: like it.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Bring you into the conversation. Get in here with us.
- 32:08Speaker 2: That's coming up for all Access members right now. All right,
- 32:11Speaker 2: we'll be back after this. All right, we're back. We're
- 32:25Speaker 2: ready to split.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Before we do, just want to say that we mentioned Oasis,
- 32:29Speaker 1: we mentioned Tupac among others in this episode, and of
- 32:35Speaker 1: course we have episodes on those artists, stories about those
- 32:38Speaker 1: artists in our archive of over two hundred and I
- 32:42Speaker 1: don't know seventy artists at this point. Matt's going to
- 32:44Speaker 1: grab that episode info on those subjects and put them
- 32:48Speaker 1: in the show notes here so you.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Can easily navigate your way to those stories. Let's recap,
- 32:52Speaker 2: shall we.

- 33:51Speaker 1: It's a community, a community of the obsessed, and no

- 33:56Speaker 1: grime that ties them all together like you do.
- 33:58Speaker 2: And that's a discord, all right.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Back on January seventeenth, nineteen ninety two, Happy Mondays landed
- 34:04Speaker 1: in Barbados and all hell broke loose, and this is
- 34:06Speaker 1: what America.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Was listening to on that day.
