Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Please welcome Adam Scott!
- 0:23Speaker 2: Well, well, well.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Well, well, well.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I'm so sorry for scaring you so badly.
- 0:28Speaker 1: You scared the shit out of me in this movie.
- 0:31Speaker 1: How dare you?
- 0:32Speaker 2: I know. I just felt like right now is a
- 0:34Speaker 2: great time to scare the shit out of people.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Yes, that's exactly what we need. That's exactly what we need. Well,
- 0:41Speaker 3: so many people, including myself, have fallen in love with
- 0:43Speaker 3: you from watching you on Parks and Rec.
- 0:46Speaker 2: And Party Down.
- 0:48Speaker 3: So funny in Step Brothers. And then you blew us
- 0:51Speaker 3: away with your dramatic.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Work in Severance.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:00Speaker 3: And now you're incredible in this horror film. Have you
- 1:02Speaker 3: been wanting to explore a darker side, or is it
- 1:06Speaker 3: the state of the world that pushed you into it?
- 1:10Speaker 2: I don't know. I guess after Parks and Rec ended,
- 1:13Speaker 2: I kind of felt like I wanted to... Because when
- 1:16Speaker 2: I started out, I thought I was going to be
- 1:18Speaker 2: like a super serious actor. And then Step Brothers actually happened.
- 1:24Speaker 2: And someone like fell out of the role and they
- 1:27Speaker 2: needed to cast it at the last second. So I
- 1:29Speaker 2: got that role and I didn't think I would. And
- 1:32Speaker 2: so that kind of set me on this kind of
- 1:34Speaker 2: comedy trajectory or whatever. And so then a few years later,
- 1:38Speaker 2: I wanted to try something more serious. So I started like,
- 1:40Speaker 2: you know, at least try like... I auditioned for Big
- 1:43Speaker 2: Little Lies and, you know, tried to get, you know,
- 1:46Speaker 2: just do something different, I guess. Yeah.
- 1:48Speaker 3: You bring up wanting, setting out and thinking you were
- 1:51Speaker 3: going to go down this dramatic path and not even
- 1:54Speaker 3: really looking at comedy. Speaking of that, tell us about
- 1:57Speaker 3: the great actor Adam Quartario.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Adam Cordero.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Cordero.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm surprised you didn't get that right.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm so sorry. I did not do my research.
- 2:08Speaker 1: We're a fake news show.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Right, exactly. Exactly. Clearly.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I do very little homework.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Cordero was going to be my new name, my stage
- 2:20Speaker 2: name for a while. This is a shortened version of
- 2:23Speaker 2: my mother's maiden name. And I remember when I was
- 2:26Speaker 2: in acting school, I wrote down Al Pacino, Robert De Niro,
- 2:31Speaker 2: Adam Cordero. And I thought it sounded so cool. I
- 2:36Speaker 2: even practiced my signature.
- 2:37Speaker 1: It does sound cool.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I know, I still might do it.
- 2:39Speaker 1: It's not too late.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Do you think Adam Cordero would have been a different
- 2:44Speaker 3: actor than Adam Scott?
- 2:45Speaker 2: 100%. Yeah. Very serious all of the time.
- 2:49Speaker 1: You'd be Method right now, probably.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah, right now I'd be here only because I was
- 2:54Speaker 2: researching a role of someone that's a guest on a
- 2:57Speaker 2: talk show.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Which isn't so far off from what you did as
- 3:01Speaker 3: a little kid. Did you, is it true that you
- 3:03Speaker 3: stayed up late to watch Letterman every single night?
- 3:06Speaker 2: Oh yeah, every night. On a five inch black and
- 3:09Speaker 2: white screen that I had in my room.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Underneath the covers?
- 3:13Speaker 2: Yes, it was the, yeah, because it was the 80s.
- 3:16Speaker 2: So Letterman was on at 1230 and so no one
- 3:20Speaker 2: was awake. And yeah, I would practice being a talk show.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I set my bed, put pillows on my bed so
- 3:27Speaker 2: it was like a couch. And I would practice talking
- 3:30Speaker 2: to Dave on my couch.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And masturbating. I mean, I was feeling like it wasn't
- 3:37Speaker 2: super cute. Yeah, OK.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Now I believe.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Now it's believable. Now it makes sense, right?
- 3:41Speaker 1: Now it's believable.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Did you ever get to meet David Letterman and tell
- 3:45Speaker 3: him you masturbated to him?
- 3:46Speaker 2: Yeah. I did. Finally, like 10 years ago, I did
- 3:54Speaker 2: his show. And it was a huge deal. Oh. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:58Speaker 2: But I did not masturbate on this.
- 4:00Speaker 1: OK, OK.
- 4:00Speaker 3: What a classy guy you are. I'm glad you had
- 4:02Speaker 3: some self-control. I want to talk about this movie, Hocum.
- 4:07Speaker 3: It takes place in Ireland.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Yes.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Without spoiling anything, tell people what it's about.
- 4:12Speaker 2: It's about a guy who's a writer. And he's going
- 4:16Speaker 2: to a hotel in Ireland to spread his parents' ashes.
- 4:20Speaker 2: And there may or may not be a witch in
- 4:23Speaker 2: the basement of the hotel. Right? Yes. When I say
- 4:28Speaker 2: may or may not, there is. Otherwise, there wouldn't be
- 4:33Speaker 2: a movie.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know why you'd say that.
- 4:36Speaker 2: There's a witch.
- 4:36Speaker 1: There's a witch. There's definitely a witch.
- 4:39Speaker 2: And you thought it was scary. You were scared.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I was terrified. It's terrifying.
- 4:43Speaker 2: It is. It's very scary.
- 4:46Speaker 1: And you play, well, first of all, how did this
- 4:48Speaker 1: role come about? For you.
- 4:51Speaker 2: It just, it was a script I read. I love
- 4:54Speaker 2: this guy, this guy, Damian McCarthy. His previous movie, Oddity,
- 4:57Speaker 2: is terrific. And I was already a fan of that.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It was a small horror movie, Irish horror movie, that
- 5:04Speaker 2: I was super into anyway. And so this kind of
- 5:08Speaker 2: came across my transom.
- 5:11Speaker 1: What?
- 5:11Speaker 2: Do people say that? I, of course I know what
- 5:14Speaker 2: that means. That's what was about to come out of
- 5:17Speaker 2: my mouth.
- 5:18Speaker 1: It makes no sense.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Sure.
- 5:20Speaker 1: If you say so.
- 5:22Speaker 2: This script came across my transom. Hold on, let me
- 5:25Speaker 2: Google it really quick. Please do. And I just wanted
- 5:29Speaker 2: to do it because I loved it.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Are you sure that wasn't an autocorrect?
- 5:31Speaker 2: I think it was.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yeah, transom was an autocorrect.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Was it Melody? Is that the name?
- 5:36Speaker 1: Melody.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Melody.
- 5:36Speaker 1: That's right. I love Melody.
- 5:38Speaker 2: What the f * * *? What's he talking about?
- 5:39Speaker 1: I don't know. No one knows.
- 5:40Speaker 2: No one knows.
- 5:41Speaker 1: No one knows.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Good lord.
- 5:43Speaker 1: So the director thought of you. So OK, your character
- 5:47Speaker 1: is a difficult man.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Yeah, an asshole. He's cantankerous. Yeah, he's OK.
- 5:51Speaker 3: I was going to say, yes, asshole. He's a little
- 5:53Speaker 3: bit of an asshole. We still root for you because
- 5:55Speaker 3: you're a great actor. But do you, when a director
- 5:58Speaker 3: calls you and says, you're the first person.
- 6:01Speaker 1: I thought of for this asshole, are you offended?
- 6:04Speaker 3: Because I'm not swimming in offers, but when I do
- 6:07Speaker 3: occasionally get an offer, it's always for.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Like an unhinged Karen.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:12Speaker 1: And of course I immediately call my manager.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Why do you think I'm so unhinged?
- 6:20Speaker 2: And you scream at them.
- 6:21Speaker 1: And I scream at them.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess I wasn't sure why he thought of
- 6:27Speaker 2: me to play just an unruly prick. But I was
- 6:35Speaker 2: excited to because I guess I played a bunch of, like,
- 6:39Speaker 2: sweetly likable people over and over again. So it was
- 6:42Speaker 2: kind of nice to... to revel in being unpleasant.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, you're also a very likable guy.
- 6:48Speaker 3: So I imagine that that would be fun to explore.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Sure.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Sometimes it's really hard just not to be so likable.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Sorry it's so difficult for you.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 7:00Speaker 1: You're getting rave reviews.
- 7:02Speaker 3: One review said, Adam Scott does his best film work
- 7:04Speaker 3: to date.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Wow, that's very nice.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Yeah. New York Times says, Adam Scott is perfection. Wow.
- 7:14Speaker 2: I think that's setting unrealistic expectations. People will inevitably be
- 7:22Speaker 2: disappointed if they read something like that.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Not true. What is it like being so perfect?
- 7:27Speaker 2: Oh, it's really difficult. I mean, where do I start? Desi,
- 7:34Speaker 2: it's so hard. You know, we all have to start somewhere.
- 7:39Speaker 2: So the perfection is something I'm working on. I'm trying
- 7:43Speaker 2: to trying to be less perfect, you know? We all
- 7:48Speaker 2: do our best.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yeah, well, good luck with that.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Good luck with that. It takes place in Ireland.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Do you think that it being in Ireland makes it
- 7:57Speaker 3: even more spooky because the buildings are so old?
- 8:00Speaker 2: Like if you.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Shot it here, you'd be shooting in like an abandoned
- 8:05Speaker 3: circuit city somewhere.
- 8:06Speaker 1: It has a different feel.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Abandoned circuit cities are terrifying, let me tell you.
- 8:11Speaker 1: This is true.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Uh, yes. Ireland is, like, the most pleasant, beautiful place
- 8:17Speaker 2: on Earth, but we are out in the middle of
- 8:19Speaker 2: the countryside, and when the sun goes down, it is
- 8:22Speaker 2: immediately terrifying.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Because it's just... It's dark. I mean, when the sun
- 8:27Speaker 2: goes down, it's dark, obviously. You don't say.
- 8:30Speaker 1: There, it's dark when the sun goes down?
- 8:32Speaker 2: Spoiler alert. Yeah, I know. But out in the middle
- 8:35Speaker 2: of the countryside, there are no streetlights, so it's really dark,
- 8:39Speaker 2: and it's super scary.
- 8:42Speaker 3: When you're in those scenes where you're having to be
- 8:44Speaker 3: terrified and often you're by yourself, what kind of sense
- 8:47Speaker 3: memory are you doing? Are you thinking about Trump getting
- 8:50Speaker 3: a third term?
- 8:51Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Yes.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And I just start screaming uncontrollably.
- 8:57Speaker 1: It worked.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Well, as a perfect actor... Thank you.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Yes.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I will never let it... That's the only way I
- 9:04Speaker 1: will ever greet you.
- 9:04Speaker 2: From now on, whenever we see each other, you'll refer
- 9:07Speaker 2: to me as... Perfect, is that what you're saying?
- 9:09Speaker 1: Mr. Scott, perfect actor. Oh my god, thank you.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Is there anything that you haven't done yet that you'd
- 9:14Speaker 3: still like to do?
- 9:15Speaker 2: That's a really good question. I don't know. I mean,
- 9:22Speaker 2: I really do think that, you know what I would
- 9:26Speaker 2: like to do is play a talk show host just
- 9:30Speaker 2: so I could, because coming here, was such a big
- 9:36Speaker 2: deal for me, just to be at The Daily Show.
- 9:39Speaker 2: And the daily grind of a talk show, I think,
- 9:44Speaker 2: is fascinating. And I know it's not as fascinating for
- 9:48Speaker 2: everybody who works here. But I find that, I mean,
- 9:53Speaker 2: probably not.
- 9:53Speaker 1: You can say that again.
- 9:54Speaker 2: That's vodka in there, right?
- 9:58Speaker 1: Cigar.
- 9:59Speaker 2: That's right.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Grizzled over it.
- 10:02Speaker 2: I think it's because one of my ways into wanting
- 10:06Speaker 2: to be in show business was David Letterman. And that
- 10:11Speaker 2: really caught my imagination. So I know that movies about
- 10:14Speaker 2: talk shows and movies about stand-up comedy are really tough
- 10:19Speaker 2: to make work. They never quite feel right, but that
- 10:22Speaker 2: would be fun.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Well, here, let's switch seats.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Oh, great, yeah.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:24Speaker 2: All right.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Okay, you.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Got the L. I feel like I need some cards
- 10:40Speaker 2: or something.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yeah, grab the cards. That's it.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Am I reading it?
- 10:43Speaker 1: Yeah, you're reading it.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Hokum is in theaters nationwide now. Adam Scott.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you.
