- 0:29Here's the upgrade. You may feel like today is
- 0:33nothing special, but upgraded thinking knows being alive is
- 0:36the privilege you'll never deserve.
- 0:39Here's the story. Ozzie Smith grew up in Watts,
- 0:43South Central Los Angeles. His family lived near a pallet
- 0:46factory. He used a plank between stacks
- 0:49of wood as a springboard, flipping into sawdust piles.
- 0:52His mother would catch him covered in dust, but the
- 0:54fearlessness stuck. Years later as spring training
- 0:581978 with the San Diego Padres, he's rookie and it's been a long
- 1:02day of workouts. He's the guy near the back of
- 1:05the pack, but to show he's still got energy, he does a round off
- 1:08backflip, just like he used to do into the sawdust piles.
- 1:12Fan Appreciation Day comes at the end of the season, and Smith
- 1:16is asked to do a flip when he takes the field.
- 1:19He's reluctant. He doesn't want to seem like a
- 1:20hot dog, but he does it. People like it enough to ask him
- 1:23to do it again. Opening Day Over time the flip
- 1:26becomes a tradition. Opening days post season All
- 1:31Star games even at 40 years old on Opening day 1995 and again in
- 1:361996 when the Saint Louis Cardinals retired his uniform.
- 1:40Almost 20 years of flipping out over the game he loved and for
- 1:43the fans who supported him. Years later, in his Hall of Fame
- 1:47speech, Smith reflects on his whole journey.
- 1:50He talks about the dream, the faith, the people who believed
- 1:53in him, the courage to get back up after being knocked down.
- 1:56Steve Dentman, writing about the culture of baseball, captured
- 2:00what Smith understood quote. Watching some guys take the
- 2:04field is painful. It's an honor to play baseball.
- 2:08Run on the field like you want to be here.
- 2:10In quote, that's what Ozzie Smith did.
- 2:13He ran on that feel like he wanted to be there because he
- 2:17understood something simple. Being able to run onto the field
- 2:21is a privilege. The better story to tell
- 2:23yourself is every day is a privilege.
- 2:26You don't have to do a black backflip when you get out of
- 2:30bed, but you can't flip your attitude by recognizing today is
- 2:34special because you get to be here.
- 2:37Send me a story of someone who acknowledged the privilege of
- 2:40what they got to do. You can e-mail me at
- 2:42fromchadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and ask them
- 2:46what is one thing that makes today special.
