- 1:18Speaker 3: What's the matter with those eggs Waldo had for breakfast, Nick?
- 1:21Speaker 4: They had nitroglycerin in them.
- 1:22Speaker 5: What?
- 1:23Speaker 3: Someone put nitroglycerin in the eggs?
- 1:24Speaker 4: No. What?
- 1:26Speaker 3: Then how'd it get in?
- 1:27Speaker 4: The chickens that laid these eggs put the explosive in.
- 1:29Speaker 5: What?
- 1:30Speaker 4: The eggs were laid by chemical chickens. And now the
- 1:37Speaker 4: case of the chemical chickens.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Today's adventure with Nick Carter brought to you by Old
- 1:42Speaker 2: Dutch Cleanser. In Nick's office, he and Patsy are busy
- 1:46Speaker 2: with the morning reports.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Uh, take this letter, Patsy.
- 1:49Speaker 6: Right, Nick.
- 1:50Speaker 4: To Mr.
- 1:51Speaker 7: Jason Griggs. Dear sir, enclosed you will find a photograph...
- 1:55Speaker 7: Taken on infrared film. Proving the will in question.
- 1:59Speaker 5: Nick Boy, Nick Boy, I've been poisoned.
- 2:01Speaker 8: If you don't save me, I'm a dead man.
- 2:03Speaker 4: Now, Walter, look, we're too busy for practical jokes.
- 2:05Speaker 5: Nick Boy, I'm feeling fast.
- 2:06Speaker 8: If you don't find me an antidote, I'll be dead
- 2:09Speaker 8: in two minutes.
- 2:10Speaker 3: What have you got in that bowl?
- 2:11Speaker 8: Eggs.
- 2:12Speaker 5: Poisoned eggs. And I ate one of them.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Are you kidding, Waldo?
- 2:16Speaker 5: No, no, Nick.
- 2:17Speaker 8: Some criminals have poisoned these eggs I was having for
- 2:20Speaker 8: my breakfast. They're after me, Nick.
- 2:22Speaker 4: No nonsense.
- 2:23Speaker 5: They've been poisoned, Nick. Smell of them here.
- 2:27Speaker 4: All right. By George. Sit down, Waldo.
- 2:31Speaker 5: Sit down. Is it too late, Nick?
- 2:34Speaker 7: No, you're not dying, if that's what you mean. I
- 2:36Speaker 7: have to make a chemical analysis to be sure. But
- 2:41Speaker 7: you may have stumbled onto something, Waldo.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Find anything, Nick?
- 2:57Speaker 4: Not sure yet.
- 2:58Speaker 5: Oh, Patsy, get your pad.
- 3:01Speaker 8: This is the last will and testament of Waldo Aloysius McGlynn,
- 3:06Speaker 8: who departs.
- 3:07Speaker 5: This world foully murdered by his enemies. Quiet, Waldo.
- 3:11Speaker 4: You haven't been poisoned. Then what's in them eggs? Nitroglycerin.
- 3:15Speaker 3: The explosive?
- 3:16Speaker 5: I had dynamite for me breakfast.
- 3:18Speaker 4: In minute quantities, yes.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Someone put nitroglycerin in the eggs?
- 3:22Speaker 4: No, the chickens that laid these eggs put it in.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Nick, are you joking?
- 3:26Speaker 9: I'm not.
- 3:27Speaker 7: These eggs were laid by chemical chickens. And nitro isn't
- 3:30Speaker 7: a thing that chickens can pick up anywhere. I think
- 3:33Speaker 7: I'll look into this.
- 3:34Speaker 3: What do you think's going on, Nick?
- 3:36Speaker 4: Can't tell you, but here's what we'll do.
- 3:38Speaker 7: We'll all go to the store where Waldo's landlady bought
- 3:41Speaker 7: these eggs. We'll each buy as many as we can
- 3:43Speaker 7: carry and bring them back here and test them.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Who knows? Maybe we'll find crooks in our omelet. The End.
- 4:01Speaker 5: Yeah, this is the place, Nick. Bleak as grossly.
- 4:04Speaker 7: Now, those eggs were large brown eggs. Go in separately
- 4:07Speaker 7: and order five dozen each. I'll go first, Waldo next,
- 4:10Speaker 7: Patsy last, right?
- 4:11Speaker 5: Okay.
- 4:11Speaker 7: Right.
- 4:11Speaker 4: All right, I'm going in now. Follow me after a
- 4:14Speaker 4: few minutes, Waldo.
- 4:15Speaker 5: Sure.
- 4:21Speaker 10: Okay, bud, how many dozen eggs you here for?
- 4:24Speaker 4: About five. Five dozen eggs at a buck a dozen.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Here's your dough, five bucks. Hey, what's this for? It's
- 4:31Speaker 4: the payoff, but I'm shelling out for the bum eggs
- 4:33Speaker 4: I sold this morning.
- 4:34Speaker 11: I beg your pardon, sir. I'm Janet Steele, pure food
- 4:37Speaker 11: inspector for the health department. If you'd like to.
- 4:39Speaker 9: Register a complaint about the eggs sold by this man.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Have a heart, lady. I'm handing this customer a five-buck bill.
- 4:44Speaker 12: What more do you want?
- 4:45Speaker 7: No, no, you don't understand. I didn't buy any eggs
- 4:47Speaker 7: this morning. I want to buy five dozen now.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Ha-ha, I'm laughing.
- 4:52Speaker 2: This dame already confiscated every egg in a joint.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Good morning, folks.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Just dropped in to purchase a little hen fruit.
- 4:59Speaker 9: No eggs in this store will be sold.
- 5:00Speaker 4: That's right, mister. No eggs.
- 5:03Speaker 5: No eggs? You got boxes of them back there.
- 5:06Speaker 9: I've condemned every one of them.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Looks as if we'll have to try some other place,
- 5:09Speaker 4: my friend.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Yeah, but why can't we get some of these here?
- 5:12Speaker 3: Say, Nick, what in the.
- 5:14Speaker 5: Quiet.
- 5:14Speaker 4: We couldn't buy any eggs. Let's get away from the
- 5:16Speaker 4: store window. I want to go around. Take a look
- 5:19Speaker 4: in back of the store.
- 5:20Speaker 3: What's this all about, Nick?
- 5:21Speaker 4: Looks like a phony setup, Betsy.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Oh?
- 5:23Speaker 7: I'm sure the man in there isn't Bleeker. Unless I
- 5:26Speaker 7: missed my guess, he's.
- 5:27Speaker 4: A crook posing as Bleeker.
- 5:28Speaker 5: What makes you think so, Nick?
- 5:29Speaker 7: First place, the way he talked. Second place, by the
- 5:31Speaker 7: money he offered me. I only got a quick look,
- 5:33Speaker 7: but that $ 5 bill he offered me looked phony.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Is this a counterfeiting case?
- 5:37Speaker 4: It's worse.
- 5:37Speaker 7: I'll explain in a few minutes. Right now, I want
- 5:40Speaker 7: to see what's happened to the real Bleeker.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Let's see.
- 5:44Speaker 7: Regular suburban back alley. Garage behind the store. And here's
- 5:49Speaker 7: the cellar entrance to the store. I think we'd better
- 5:51Speaker 7: duck down into the cellar and look around. Get that
- 5:53Speaker 7: door open, Waldo.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Right, Nick.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Patsy, take a look in the garage. There's a place safe.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Right away, Nick.
- 5:58Speaker 5: This is a heavy door, Nick.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Quiet.
- 6:00Speaker 4: I'll give you a hand.
- 6:01Speaker 8: Nick.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Yes?
- 6:02Speaker 9: Come here quick.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Look what I found in the garage.
- 6:07Speaker 5: Holy smokes. It's a man all tied up and gagged.
- 6:10Speaker 4: That would be bleaker. Help me get these ropes off, Waldo.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Yeah, sure. Take off the gag, Patsy.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Golly, I don't think he's breathing.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Maybe he's dead.
- 6:18Speaker 4: No, no, he's still warm.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Oh, thank heavens, Nick.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Quick, Waldo. Try artificial respiration. Yeah. One chance in a thousand,
- 6:24Speaker 4: we can save him. All right, Nick. Listen, Patsy. We're
- 6:27Speaker 4: in a spot.
- 6:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 6:29Speaker 7: I've got to call Matty for an ambulance and pull
- 6:31Speaker 7: motor at once to give this man a chance. But
- 6:33Speaker 7: when an ambulance arrives, the crook inside the store is
- 6:35Speaker 7: going to catch on. You've got to help me.
- 6:36Speaker 5: How?
- 6:37Speaker 4: Take off your hat. Comb your hair into bangs. Make
- 6:40Speaker 4: your face up heavily with plenty of lipstick.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Disguise myself as a tough, in other words.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:44Speaker 7: That thug in there hasn't seen you yet. So you
- 6:47Speaker 7: can get away with it. Go into the store and
- 6:49Speaker 7: get him out of there. Get him out by hook
- 6:51Speaker 7: or crook and stay with him.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Oh, trust me, Nick. I'll do it if I have
- 6:55Speaker 3: to sing torch songs.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Now, look, Nick, I'm pretty sore about this. What's the
- 7:10Speaker 2: idea of letting that mug in the grocery store get away?
- 7:13Speaker 4: I didn't let him, Matty. Patsy took him away.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Do you realize if we can't bring Bleeker to, it's
- 7:18Speaker 2: a murder rap?
- 7:19Speaker 4: It's more than just a murder rap, Matty. Well, how
- 7:21Speaker 4: are they doing with the pole motor, Waldo?
- 7:22Speaker 5: No luck yet, Nick.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Nick, what's all this about poisoned eggs? Very simple.
- 7:27Speaker 7: Chickens are funny birds. What they eat goes into the
- 7:30Speaker 7: eggs they lay. In essence, if a chicken eats moth bones,
- 7:33Speaker 7: its eggs smell of camphor.
- 7:34Speaker 5: No kidding. Fact.
- 7:35Speaker 7: Fact. Now, somewhere in the country, there are some chickens
- 7:38Speaker 7: that have been drinking water polluted with nitroglycerin.
- 7:40Speaker 5: What's that?
- 7:41Speaker 7: The eggs Waldo had for breakfast had traces of nitroglycerin
- 7:45Speaker 7: in them.
- 7:45Speaker 5: So?
- 7:46Speaker 4: Might have been an accident.
- 7:47Speaker 7: When I found an obvious thug posing as a grocer
- 7:49Speaker 7: in the store where the eggs were bought, I knew
- 7:51Speaker 7: it was something else.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Somewhere, Matty.
- 7:54Speaker 7: Up in the farming country, there's a crooked plant manufacturing
- 7:57Speaker 7: supplies for criminals. Bootleg nitroglycerin for blasting safes, counterfeit money,
- 8:01Speaker 7: probably everything that a crook can't buy legitimately.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Holy smoke. And these polluted eggs are the giveaway to
- 8:07Speaker 5: the plant?
- 8:07Speaker 4: Right.
- 8:08Speaker 7: Some of the nitro must have seeped out accidentally and
- 8:10Speaker 7: polluted the water in a brook or something that runs
- 8:13Speaker 7: through a chicken farm nearby.
- 8:14Speaker 5: Well, I'll be darned.
- 8:15Speaker 4: That's why I had to.
- 8:16Speaker 7: Hold on to that thug without tipping my hand. He's
- 8:18Speaker 7: got to lead us to that place. What's the pole
- 8:21Speaker 7: motor stopping for, Matty?
- 8:23Speaker 5: The job is done, Nick.
- 8:24Speaker 8: That man was practically dead when we found him, but
- 8:26Speaker 8: he's alive now. You saved him, boy.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Oh, good, good, Waldo. Can I question him?
- 8:29Speaker 5: Oh, no, no, not for two or three days, the
- 8:31Speaker 5: doc says. It's going to be tough enough just keeping
- 8:33Speaker 5: him alive.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Two or three days? By that time, this whole mob
- 8:36Speaker 4: may be a thousand miles away.
- 8:37Speaker 7: It's all up to Patsy now. All we can do
- 8:42Speaker 7: is go back to the office and wait for her
- 8:43Speaker 7: to check in.
- 8:57Speaker 9: Hey, Eddie.
- 8:59Speaker 4: Yep?
- 8:59Speaker 3: Close that door, will you? I can't hear myself think.
- 9:03Speaker 4: You're a funny babe.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Okay.
- 9:10Speaker 6: When you invite a lady to eat in a private
- 9:12Speaker 6: dining room, she likes to be private.
- 9:15Speaker 10: I never knew old man Bleeker had a good-looking daughter
- 9:17Speaker 10: like you. What a break for me. You coming into
- 9:20Speaker 10: the store looking for a.
- 9:22Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Come your mind in the store for him. He didn't
- 9:25Speaker 3: say he was going nowhere.
- 9:27Speaker 4: He got a rush call.
- 9:28Speaker 10: Had to see somebody about some garage business.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Oh.
- 9:31Speaker 10: He's gonna be plenty sore when he hears I closed
- 9:34Speaker 10: up the place to go eat lunch with his knockout daughter.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Oh, Eddie.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Ain't that waiter ever gonna bring you some food?
- 9:41Speaker 3: Huh? Oh, I'll go call him. I'll get that punk moving.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Okay, babe.
- 9:47Speaker 9: Hmm.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Important garage business. That's a good one. Back already, babe?
- 9:59Speaker 9: Hello, Tyler.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Janet. I thought you were.
- 10:02Speaker 12: The girl you brought?
- 10:04Speaker 9: No, she's outside phoning, Tyler.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Phoning?
- 10:07Speaker 9: When five will get you ten, she's calling a guy
- 10:09Speaker 9: named Nick Carter.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Nick Carter?
- 10:11Speaker 9: Yes, Tyler, Nick Carter. The man who came into Bleeker's
- 10:14Speaker 9: store to buy eggs this morning when I was posing
- 10:16Speaker 9: as a health inspector.
- 10:17Speaker 5: Nick Carter?
- 10:18Speaker 11: And that pretty face you're making up to belongs to
- 10:20Speaker 11: Patsy Bowen, Carter's secretary.
- 10:22Speaker 12: Well, I knew it all the time, Janet.
- 10:25Speaker 9: You're a liar.
- 10:26Speaker 12: Well, don't worry about it, babe.
- 10:29Speaker 4: I'll take care of that kid.
- 10:29Speaker 11: Not for me, you won't. You're quitting the gang, Tyler.
- 10:33Speaker 11: You're too dangerous to keep around.
- 10:35Speaker 9: Janet.
- 10:36Speaker 12: So long, Tyler.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Eddie Tyler sprawls over the table, two bullets in his heart,
- 10:49Speaker 2: as Janet Steele slips out of the private dining room.
- 10:52Speaker 2: With Tyler dead, Nick's only lead in the case ends.
- 10:55Speaker 2: We'll learn what he does next in just a moment.
- 11:03Speaker 2: And now, back to.
- 11:04Speaker 12: The case of the chemical chickens.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Today's adventure with Nick Carter brought to you by Old
- 11:09Speaker 2: Dutch Cleanser. As we pick up our story, Nick Carter
- 11:12Speaker 2: and Waldo have pulled up to the cafe and answered
- 11:15Speaker 2: to Patsy's urgent telephone call.
- 11:19Speaker 6: Nick?
- 11:20Speaker 5: Nick? Hey, there's Patsy.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Yes, what is it, Patsy?
- 11:23Speaker 7: Oh, Nick.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Nick, it's too late. I've lost Tyler.
- 11:26Speaker 5: For good.
- 11:27Speaker 4: He got away when you were phoning me?
- 11:29Speaker 5: No.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Someone killed him.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Killed him?
- 11:31Speaker 4: Where's he now?
- 11:32Speaker 3: In the back room. Strolled over the table. I went
- 11:34Speaker 3: back and there he was.
- 11:36Speaker 4: All right, Patsy. This is a tough break, but we'll manage.
- 11:38Speaker 4: You get the car and wait.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Right.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Waldo, come with me.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:51Speaker 5: That must be the room back there, Nick.
- 11:53Speaker 7: Right.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Come on. Keep your back to the door. No one
- 12:00Speaker 4: comes in. All right, boy. Chance might have something in
- 12:07Speaker 4: his pockets.
- 12:10Speaker 9: No.
- 12:12Speaker 4: No wallet. No papers. Nothing.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Then we're stuck, Nick?
- 12:21Speaker 4: Not quite. There's one chance. His pockets and his pants, cops.
- 12:26Speaker 5: What are you ripping his pockets out for, Nick?
- 12:28Speaker 4: You'll find out later. Now, this is what we do.
- 12:32Speaker 4: You telephone Matty. Tell him about this murder.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:36Speaker 4: And join me at the lab.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Okay.
- 12:38Speaker 7: Patsy goes to Bleeker's store to check the crates the
- 12:41Speaker 7: tainted eggs were delivered in. Those crates are usually stenciled
- 12:44Speaker 7: with the address of the farm that delivered them.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Yeah, but what.
- 12:47Speaker 7: If Patsy can find that address, it may tell us
- 12:50Speaker 7: where Eddie Tyler came from. If she can't, we'll have
- 12:53Speaker 7: to depend on his pockets and the cuffs of his pants.
- 13:07Speaker 4: All right, hold that pocket steady, Walter. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:09Speaker 7: I want to be sure this vacuum cleaner picks up
- 13:12Speaker 7: every particle of dirt and grit that's in it.
- 13:15Speaker 5: This one's clean now, Nick.
- 13:16Speaker 4: All right, give me the cuff of the pants.
- 13:18Speaker 5: Okay.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Clean them out, too.
- 13:20Speaker 5: Look, I don't get it, Nick.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Hold it steady. All right, that's clean.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Now the other one. Okay. Oops, careful. That's it. All right,
- 13:36Speaker 4: all finished. Now we.
- 13:43Speaker 7: Open the vacuum cleaner. And we have one porcelain trap
- 13:48Speaker 7: filled with assorted dust.
- 13:49Speaker 5: Dust?
- 13:50Speaker 4: And this dust is going under the microscope right now.
- 13:53Speaker 5: Why?
- 13:53Speaker 4: Going to tell us where Eddie Tyler's been during the
- 13:55Speaker 4: past few weeks.
- 13:56Speaker 5: How the devil can dust do that, Nick?
- 13:58Speaker 4: Use your head, Wardle.
- 13:59Speaker 5: Yeah, but there's dust in the air everywhere.
- 14:01Speaker 7: But it's not all the same kind of dust. Find
- 14:03Speaker 7: particular kinds of dust in particular localities. And that's what
- 14:07Speaker 7: I'm counting on.
- 14:17Speaker 5: You found anything yet, Nick?
- 14:19Speaker 4: I think so. Patsy? No, it's the law.
- 14:23Speaker 2: And darn good and sore, too, if you want to know.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Find any Tyler matter? Nick, this is a fine mess.
- 14:29Speaker 2: You let Tyler get away so you can break the
- 14:31Speaker 2: case and he ends up a corpse. Oh, when the
- 14:34Speaker 2: commissioner hears about this tomorrow morning.
- 14:36Speaker 4: The case will be ended by tomorrow morning.
- 14:38Speaker 5: Are you kidding?
- 14:39Speaker 4: No, hoping. I've been checking the dust from Tyler's pockets.
- 14:42Speaker 2: What?
- 14:43Speaker 7: Outside of ordinary dust found almost everywhere, I've found smelter dust,
- 14:47Speaker 7: flower dust, and particles of dry hay, all in the
- 14:49Speaker 7: deepest layers. That means Tyler's been living in a farming
- 14:52Speaker 7: vicinity that also has an iron foundry and flour mill
- 14:54Speaker 7: somewhere near.
- 14:55Speaker 4: Give me that industrial map, Waldo.
- 14:57Speaker 5: Right.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Nick Carter speaking.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Nick, Patsy. I've just finished searching Bleaker's store.
- 15:02Speaker 5: Yes?
- 15:02Speaker 3: It's no good, Nick. Every egg crate in the place
- 15:04Speaker 3: has been destroyed. Not one left anywhere.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Now, wait a minute.
- 15:08Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 15:10Speaker 4: This must be it.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Huh?
- 15:11Speaker 3: Nick, what on earth are you talking about?
- 15:13Speaker 4: I've been checking my industrial map while you were reporting, Patsy.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Oh.
- 15:16Speaker 7: Mattie, there's only one town in the near vicinity that's
- 15:18Speaker 7: a farming center and at the same time has a
- 15:20Speaker 7: flour mill and an iron foundry.
- 15:21Speaker 4: That's Brickton.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Brickton?
- 15:23Speaker 4: That must be the place Tyler came from.
- 15:24Speaker 3: I don't understand, Nick.
- 15:26Speaker 7: Oh, you will pretty soon. Hurry back to the office, Patsy. You, Waldo,
- 15:29Speaker 7: and I are driving up to Brickton right away.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Oh.
- 15:43Speaker 3: A brick and a half mile, Nick. That's what the
- 15:44Speaker 3: sign said.
- 15:45Speaker 7: Uh-huh.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Now, remember, we stay undercover in this town. There's a
- 15:48Speaker 4: sheriff in here that hates the very sight of me.
- 15:51Speaker 5: Hey, did you have a run-in with him before, Nick?
- 15:53Speaker 7: Yeah, in the Joplin case last year. But it was
- 15:56Speaker 7: a run-in with her.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Oh, a lady sheriff? Like in Texas, eh?
- 16:01Speaker 7: Tougher in Texas. Sheriff Moss Stickney is convinced I double-crossed
- 16:05Speaker 7: her last year. She'll do everything she can to obstruct
- 16:07Speaker 7: me now, so we stay undercover.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Now, look, when we get into Brickton, you and Waldo
- 16:12Speaker 4: each rent a car.
- 16:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:13Speaker 4: I've divided Brickton into three areas. Each one of us
- 16:16Speaker 4: covers one of the areas.
- 16:17Speaker 13: Uh-uh.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Here's the town line, Nick.
- 16:19Speaker 8: Uh-huh.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Now, each of us.
- 16:20Speaker 7: Visits every farm in our area and asks the farm
- 16:23Speaker 7: owners if they deliver eggs to Bleeker in New York.
- 16:26Speaker 5: Yeah, but wait. Some of them farmers might not answer, Nick.
- 16:28Speaker 7: Well, here are two $ 100 bills. You and Patsy each
- 16:31Speaker 7: take one.
- 16:32Speaker 13: Huh?
- 16:32Speaker 4: If you meet a close-mouthed farmer.
- 16:34Speaker 7: Tell him this $ 100 bill was found in a crate
- 16:37Speaker 7: of eggs delivered to Bleeker. He can collect if he
- 16:39Speaker 7: has records proving deliveries of yesterday.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Well, that ought to work. Oh, slow down, Nick. We're
- 16:44Speaker 3: passing a rent-a-car garage.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Uh-oh. Run by the terrible Ma Stickney. All right.
- 16:51Speaker 5: Go ahead.
- 16:52Speaker 7: Each of you rent a car. And we'll meet back
- 16:54Speaker 7: here 6 o'clock tonight.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Good luck.
- 17:07Speaker 13: Well, well, well, this is farm number three for Detective
- 17:13Speaker 13: Waldo McGlynn to examine with his piercing eyes.
- 17:17Speaker 14: Wilson's farm. Maybe we'll have better luck with this one here. Ah,
- 17:24Speaker 14: it is a farmer. It's a farmerette, I'm going to
- 17:27Speaker 14: be questioning.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Very pretty, too, in them pants.
- 17:33Speaker 5: Just a minute there, young lady. Yes? How would you
- 17:36Speaker 5: like to earn 100... It's the health inspector.
- 17:41Speaker 9: Well, I've seen you before, haven't I? In Bleeker's Grocery
- 17:45Speaker 9: this morning?
- 17:46Speaker 5: Well, ma'am, I... You're.
- 17:47Speaker 11: The famous Waldo McGlynn, aren't you? Nick Carter's great assistant.
- 17:52Speaker 5: You got the right man, ma'am. But it's a secret.
- 17:56Speaker 4: Nobody's supposed to know that me and Nick is up here.
- 17:58Speaker 5: Mr.
- 17:59Speaker 9: McGlynn, I'm certainly glad to see you. It's about those eggs.
- 18:03Speaker 3: The bad eggs.
- 18:04Speaker 5: Oh, you found them then?
- 18:05Speaker 4: Yes.
- 18:06Speaker 9: They're here on this farm. I need your help, Mr. McGlynn.
- 18:10Speaker 9: I'm only a weak woman and... You.
- 18:14Speaker 5: Waldo McGlynn's the right man for you, ma'am. Where are
- 18:18Speaker 5: them bad eggs?
- 18:19Speaker 9: There's a building back at this farm, up this road
- 18:21Speaker 9: a little. I'll show you.
- 18:22Speaker 11: Good.
- 18:23Speaker 9: Does Mr. Carter know you're here?
- 18:25Speaker 5: No, ma'am.
- 18:26Speaker 8: Waldo McGlynn works alone.
- 18:28Speaker 9: Good.
- 18:28Speaker 5: Now, what's the layout here, ma'am?
- 18:30Speaker 9: You see that house there, right along the chicken yard?
- 18:33Speaker 5: Yep.
- 18:34Speaker 11: There's some men live there. They rented it from Wilson.
- 18:37Speaker 11: They pretend to be scientists doing research, but.
- 18:39Speaker 5: They're... I know, I know.
- 18:40Speaker 4: They're crooks, ma'am.
- 18:42Speaker 5: They're making dynamite and burglar tools for more crooks.
- 18:44Speaker 11: Well, in some way, the nitroglycerin they're making got into
- 18:48Speaker 11: the chicken's drinking water and tainted the eggs.
- 18:50Speaker 5: I've already deduced that meself, ma'am.
- 18:53Speaker 11: So this morning when the eggs were delivered to Bleeker's
- 18:55Speaker 11: grocery in New York, Bleeker called Farmer Wilson on the
- 18:58Speaker 11: telephone and complained.
- 19:00Speaker 8: Ah.
- 19:01Speaker 11: And Wilson asked the crooks about it because he thought
- 19:03Speaker 11: they were scientists.
- 19:05Speaker 9: He couldn't understand it.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 19:07Speaker 11: And the crooks realized that the tainted eggs might lead
- 19:10Speaker 11: the police up here to their factory.
- 19:12Speaker 4: Yeah, sure.
- 19:12Speaker 11: So when they learned that all the eggs in this
- 19:14Speaker 11: particular shipment went to Bleeker's, they rushed down to the
- 19:17Speaker 11: city and tried to cover up by closing Bleeker's mouth
- 19:20Speaker 11: and paying off all the customers who came back to
- 19:22Speaker 11: the grocery to complain.
- 19:23Speaker 9: Yeah, sure. They even had a woman pose as a
- 19:26Speaker 9: health inspector to make it look legitimate.
- 19:29Speaker 5: But ma'am, you.
- 19:30Speaker 9: Come into the house, Mr. McGlynn. The crooks aren't here now.
- 19:34Speaker 5: Hey, but ma'am, you were the health inspector.
- 19:36Speaker 9: Yes, Mr. McGlynn, I was.
- 19:38Speaker 5: Hi, Janet.
- 19:40Speaker 11: Who's the character with the walrus spinach? Nosy little man.
- 19:43Speaker 11: Works for Nick Carter. Hey, you can't... Stand still, McGlynn,
- 19:46Speaker 11: and don't reach for that rod or I'll blow you
- 19:47Speaker 11: wide open.
- 19:48Speaker 5: You're in cahoots with him. Shut up.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Up.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Findle. Yeah?
- 19:52Speaker 9: Carter's in town. We have to drop everything and take
- 19:54Speaker 9: care of him.
- 19:54Speaker 8: You'll never harm Nick Carter.
- 19:55Speaker 11: You'll never get.
- 19:56Speaker 9: Quiet down, Grandpa. Findle, tell the boys to get ready.
- 20:00Speaker 9: You can tie up this character in the meantime.
- 20:01Speaker 5: Okay.
- 20:03Speaker 9: Oh, I forgot to tell you. I had to kill
- 20:05Speaker 9: Eddie Tyler in town. He turned out to be a nuisance.
- 20:18Speaker 4: What time is it, Patsy?
- 20:19Speaker 3: 6.30, Nick.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Now, where in blazes is Walter? Should have been here
- 20:25Speaker 4: at 6.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Maybe he located the farm.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Yeah, he's probably there now, blasting away with that old.
- 20:30Speaker 4: 44 of yours. Guns are bigger menace to Walter than
- 20:33Speaker 4: the underworld.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Sheriff Stickney!
- 20:35Speaker 5: Sheriff Stickney, is that you?
- 20:37Speaker 4: Well, it's that health inspector from New York.
- 20:40Speaker 9: Sheriff Stickney, the most amazing thing just happened to me a... Oh,
- 20:43Speaker 9: I'm sorry. I thought Sheriff Stickney was in this car.
- 20:46Speaker 4: You want help? I'll be glad to give it to you.
- 20:48Speaker 4: I'm Nick Carter.
- 20:48Speaker 9: Not the Nick Carter.
- 20:50Speaker 11: Well, I'm Janet Steele, a health inspector from New York.
- 20:54Speaker 9: I was up here investigating a shipment of bad eggs.
- 20:57Speaker 4: What did you say just happened to you, Miss Steele?
- 20:59Speaker 9: Oh, it's the strangest thing.
- 21:00Speaker 11: I found a car parked out on the road. It's
- 21:03Speaker 11: one that Sheriff Stickney rents. And guess what was stuck
- 21:06Speaker 11: in the windshield? Half of a hundred dollar bill.
- 21:09Speaker 4: In what road?
- 21:10Speaker 5: Where?
- 21:10Speaker 11: Just outside Wilson's Farm. It was near a large white
- 21:13Speaker 11: building alongside the chicken yards. Chicken yards?
- 21:16Speaker 3: Nick, that's it.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Yes, Patsy, come on. Let's get out there fast.
- 21:20Speaker 9: The End.
- 21:26Speaker 2: The heavy roadster surges forward as Nick and Patsy drive
- 21:29Speaker 2: into what is apparently a cleverly baited trap. We'll see
- 21:32Speaker 2: whether or not the jaws of the trap close on
- 21:34Speaker 2: them in just a moment. And now for the conclusion
- 21:41Speaker 2: of The Case of the Chemical Chickens. Today's Nick Carter
- 21:44Speaker 2: adventure brought to you by Old Dutch Cleanser.
- 21:48Speaker 9: It's seven o'clock.
- 21:49Speaker 12: The night is pitch black. Alongside the lighthouse behind Farmer
- 21:52Speaker 12: Wilson's chicken yard... Five men and a woman wait tensely,
- 21:55Speaker 12: watching the turnpike road.
- 21:59Speaker 9: He ought to be along any minute, Bindle. I took
- 22:03Speaker 9: the shortcut. He couldn't be more than five minutes behind me.
- 22:06Speaker 4: He'll be along.
- 22:07Speaker 9: This is what we do, Bindle.
- 22:09Speaker 11: When he comes waltzing in looking for Grandpa, we knock
- 22:11Speaker 11: him and the girl cold. We take the three of
- 22:14Speaker 11: them over to the covered bridge and drive them and
- 22:16Speaker 11: the car into the river.
- 22:17Speaker 9: Big accident.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Well, better do it soon. Hold it, Bindle. Listen.
- 22:22Speaker 5: It's a car.
- 22:22Speaker 9: It's Carter. I know that car.
- 22:24Speaker 11: Get set, everybody. When I give the word, give them
- 22:27Speaker 11: the lights and show them they're covered.
- 22:37Speaker 9: Looks like Carter and the girl. All right, Bindle.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Now.
- 22:42Speaker 5: You're covered, Carter. You and the... Holy!
- 22:45Speaker 15: What's the meaning of this ruckus? What are you doing
- 22:47Speaker 15: with them guns? Guns is illegal in Brixton County.
- 22:51Speaker 5: What's that name, Sheriff?
- 22:52Speaker 12: Your name's Bendel, ain't it?
- 22:54Speaker 5: And yours is Steele. Well, you're both under arrest.
- 22:56Speaker 12: We got you covered, Ma.
- 22:57Speaker 9: I'm sorry your number's up. Don't get excited, boys.
- 23:00Speaker 11: Ma's going to have a fatal accident along with Carter
- 23:02Speaker 11: and the girl.
- 23:02Speaker 5: The only accident I'm going to have is to pull the.
- 23:04Speaker 4: Trigger of this Tommy gun.
- 23:05Speaker 5: Hey, that's Carter.
- 23:06Speaker 4: Carter, where?
- 23:07Speaker 5: On the roof of your little factory, covering all of you.
- 23:09Speaker 4: The first man who turns the light toward me gets
- 23:10Speaker 4: a head full of sluts.
- 23:13Speaker 5: Your racket's finished, Janet.
- 23:15Speaker 4: You want to know why?
- 23:16Speaker 5: Ask your lawyer.
- 23:17Speaker 7: You'll be seeing a lot of him while you're trying
- 23:19Speaker 7: to beat a murder rap.
- 23:31Speaker 15: Conker, I got a hand to you. You're all right
- 23:35Speaker 15: for a New York detective. Laying the whole case in
- 23:38Speaker 15: my lap the way you did was mighty generous.
- 23:41Speaker 8: Nick, boy, I got to apologize. I failed me mission.
- 23:45Speaker 8: Just when I had this whole mystery solved, I made
- 23:48Speaker 8: one little slip.
- 23:50Speaker 6: One little slip. You walked right into a trap with
- 23:53Speaker 6: your eyes wide open. You and your 44.
- 23:57Speaker 12: Just one thing, Carter.
- 23:59Speaker 15: How'd you know that story of Janice was phony when
- 24:02Speaker 15: she tried to trap you and Miss Bowen?
- 24:05Speaker 4: Well, Sheriff, stick me three things.
- 24:07Speaker 7: Before I came out here, I checked up and couldn't
- 24:09Speaker 7: find any record of an inspector on.
- 24:10Speaker 4: The health department staff named Janet Steele. That was the
- 24:13Speaker 4: first thing.
- 24:14Speaker 7: Then I didn't like the idea of a health inspector
- 24:17Speaker 7: working up here in Brickton.
- 24:18Speaker 4: It sounded phony. She wouldn't have any jurisdiction up here.
- 24:21Speaker 12: She sure wouldn't.
- 24:22Speaker 7: But the slip that gelled everything for me was when
- 24:24Speaker 7: she claimed to recognize Waldo's car as one of the
- 24:27Speaker 7: cars that you rented. For a stranger in Brickton, it
- 24:30Speaker 7: was obviously impossible.
- 24:31Speaker 4: For her to know that. So I pretended to fall
- 24:34Speaker 4: into the trap, and that's all.
- 24:36Speaker 8: Ah, you done it in great style, Nick boy. When
- 24:39Speaker 8: you showed up on that roof with a tommy gun
- 24:41Speaker 8: in your hands, you was old Sim Carter all over again.
- 24:45Speaker 4: Ah, none of that fancy deduction stuff. No, sir, bullets
- 24:49Speaker 4: and action.
- 24:49Speaker 8: Nick, take Waldo McGlynn's word for it.
- 24:53Speaker 5: You'll be a detective yet.
- 24:55Speaker 3: The End.
- 25:05Speaker 12: Well, Nick, what about the adventure Old Dutch Cleanser will
- 25:07Speaker 12: bring us next week?
- 25:08Speaker 7: Before I answer that, Bob, I wish to remind our
- 25:11Speaker 7: listeners that National Boys Club Week begins tomorrow. And as
- 25:15Speaker 7: you know, sponsoring a boys club of my own, I'm
- 25:18Speaker 7: particularly interested in this fine work which is combating juvenile
- 25:22Speaker 7: delinquency so effectively. More than a quarter of a million
- 25:25Speaker 7: boys find wholesome activity and entertainment in these clubs. Under
- 25:30Speaker 7: competent leadership, they receive companionship and recreation and learn to
- 25:34Speaker 7: develop skills and ambitions. According to law enforcement authorities, boys'
- 25:39Speaker 7: clubs lessen delinquency wherever they're established. For these reasons, I personally,
- 25:44Speaker 7: as well as the makers of Old Dutch Cleanser, wish
- 25:47Speaker 7: to salute the Boys' Clubs of America for their great
- 25:50Speaker 7: contribution in building the citizens of tomorrow.
- 25:54Speaker 10: And now.
- 25:55Speaker 4: Next week's adventure.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Oh, it scares me just to remember that case.
- 25:59Speaker 12: If it scares you, it must be some story. What's
- 26:01Speaker 12: it all about?
- 26:02Speaker 7: Well, Bob, it started with a mysterious disappearance of a
- 26:04Speaker 7: lot of new cars that were never found again.
- 26:06Speaker 6: And it just about finished when Nick and I ended
- 26:08Speaker 6: up in an old abandoned quarry full of water.
- 26:11Speaker 7: But thanks to a new shortwave device, we managed to
- 26:14Speaker 7: solve the case.
- 26:15Speaker 12: I certainly want to hear this story. What do you
- 26:17Speaker 12: call it, Nick?
- 26:18Speaker 4: I call it the case of the lucrative wrecks.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Nick Carter, Master Detective, is presented each week at this
- 26:29Speaker 2: time and over these same stations by the Cudahy Packing.
- 26:32Speaker 12: Company, makers of Old Dutch Cleanser.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Remember, when you go shopping tomorrow, get the cleanser preferred
- 26:39Speaker 2: by more women in America than any other.
- 26:42Speaker 12: Old Dutch Cleanser.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Nick Carter, Master Detective, produced and directed by Jock McGregor,
