- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The rex was not chasing the jeep. Murray, Murray, you there.
- 0:09Speaker 1: You love sandwiches. Huh, let's go to eighty.
- 0:13Speaker 3: It was bo.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Wow that prime time. Maybe I had a crush on
- 0:18Speaker 1: Betty Rubbell.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 2: to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman was black.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He caught them the game last night, although they won
- 0:28Speaker 1: the game you're listening to to Gotsen Company. I love
- 0:32Speaker 1: this man.
- 0:32Speaker 2: He's one of the best broadcasters we have. He is
- 0:34Speaker 2: the voice of the Final Four. And look what happened
- 0:37Speaker 2: to Iron Eagle the rare Sweet sixteen before the Final Four.
- 0:42Speaker 2: His lab he has this is the greatest regional I've
- 0:46Speaker 2: ever seen. I and this is insane what you're about
- 0:48Speaker 2: to call.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Yeah, it does feel like that Stu Gotch And obviously
- 0:52Speaker 4: you've been following this thing forever. I've been doing the
- 0:54Speaker 4: tournament for twenty nine years. We've had great regionals. Certainly,
- 0:59Speaker 4: we've had tremendous storylines, we've had incredible games, But prior
- 1:04Speaker 4: to this one, I don't know if I've ever felt
- 1:06Speaker 4: the build up quite like this. This easily could have
- 1:09Speaker 4: been the Final four and nobody would have even bad
- 1:13Speaker 4: in an eyelash, right, So it's a pretty clear indicator
- 1:17Speaker 4: that there are behemoths at play here.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Yes, that's a great point.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Just about any year if this was the final four,
- 1:25Speaker 2: everyone would be thrilled with this being the final four, right,
- 1:28Speaker 2: it's crazy.
- 1:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:29Speaker 4: I think the Saint John's part of it is the
- 1:31Speaker 4: one that it's been a while. But for those of
- 1:35Speaker 4: a certain age, there is a romanticism regarding this because
- 1:41Speaker 4: of depending up on where you grew up, depending upon
- 1:44Speaker 4: who you were a fan of, depending upon if you
- 1:47Speaker 4: were just a big Hea East basketball head, and it's
- 1:51Speaker 4: ingrained in you that you have good thoughts when you
- 1:54Speaker 4: think of Saint John's.
- 1:55Speaker 5: It's been a long time.
- 1:57Speaker 4: It's been twenty seven years for for this program to
- 2:01Speaker 4: be on this stage, but it just feels right with
- 2:05Speaker 4: Rick Patino at the Helm that this is the time
- 2:08Speaker 4: for it to happen.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Did the committee do Saint John's wrong?
- 2:11Speaker 5: And what I mean by that.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Is just to get to the final four, Patino, we'll
- 2:16Speaker 2: have beaten Bill Sealth and Kansas.
- 2:18Speaker 1: We'll have to beat Duke and then.
- 2:20Speaker 2: If he gets past Duke, we'll have to face the
- 2:21Speaker 2: winner of Michigan State and Yukon.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Yeah, you can make the case certainly that they were
- 2:27Speaker 4: better than what they're seating was. I don't know if
- 2:32Speaker 4: there were opinions already made and formed before the Big
- 2:36Speaker 4: East Tournament, where they just plowed through. They did not
- 2:40Speaker 4: trail at all in the Big East Tournament. They were
- 2:43Speaker 4: clearly better than every other team at this point in
- 2:46Speaker 4: time in the Big East. Now we might end up
- 2:48Speaker 4: seeing Saint John's Yukon again and they'll be able to
- 2:51Speaker 4: settle it on the court. But I thought there were
- 2:54Speaker 4: going to be a four seed. I did in the
- 2:56Speaker 4: Grand scheme. It's not even just the seed you are,
- 2:59Speaker 4: it's where you're placed. And the East Region is completely stacked,
- 3:04Speaker 4: and we knew that prior, and we still feel the
- 3:06Speaker 4: same way even after two rounds.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I and do you like today's college basketball?
- 3:12Speaker 4: I like what the byproduct has been for the NCAA Tournament.
- 3:16Speaker 4: I believe that we're getting high level games. I believe
- 3:20Speaker 4: we're getting incredibly competitive action. And while I know that
- 3:25Speaker 4: we don't have the traditional Cinderella that we always dreamed of,
- 3:31Speaker 4: we have maybe some ancillary Cinderella that Nebraska and Iowa,
- 3:36Speaker 4: two teams that nobody leading up to the season would
- 3:40Speaker 4: have predicted would be a part of this thing based.
- 3:42Speaker 5: On where they were.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Nebraska's never won an NCAA tournament game before this year,
- 3:46Speaker 4: and Iowa had a guy that was coaching Division two
- 3:50Speaker 4: as recently as two years ago and has had this
- 3:53Speaker 4: meteoric rise, Ben McCollum, as a head coach in a
- 3:57Speaker 4: major conference. So I think you get a little taste
- 4:00Speaker 4: of it. But it's not the George Mason. It's not
- 4:04Speaker 4: the Loyola Chicago, it's not the VCU, it's not Florida Atlantic.
- 4:11Speaker 4: But I do think the games have been better, and
- 4:14Speaker 4: I felt that last year that the final four we
- 4:17Speaker 4: got last year four number one seeds, which is not
- 4:21Speaker 4: common as we know, and tremendous games. Those games were
- 4:27Speaker 4: drag them out, fight to the finished games, all three
- 4:31Speaker 4: of them.
- 4:31Speaker 5: I thought Duke and.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Houston was a serious battle. I thought Florida Auburn was fantastic,
- 4:38Speaker 4: and then the national championship game came down to one
- 4:41Speaker 4: final possession where Houston doesn't even get a shot off, which.
- 4:44Speaker 5: Is odd in and of itself.
- 4:45Speaker 4: I remember a national championship game down to one possession
- 4:50Speaker 4: where the team doesn't even get a field goal attempt off.
- 4:54Speaker 5: So I just think that maybe we have.
- 4:56Speaker 4: To retrain our brain a little bit and for now
- 5:00Speaker 4: this is the new normal.
- 5:02Speaker 1: It's hard.
- 5:03Speaker 2: And I asked that question because we live in a
- 5:04Speaker 2: world where Indiana dominates college football and Nebraska maybe the
- 5:08Speaker 2: team that dominates college basketball.
- 5:10Speaker 5: It's crazy. That seems very backward. Ass I would agree
- 5:16Speaker 5: that is.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I can't get used to it. I know you're telling
- 5:18Speaker 1: me to my brain, but I don't want to.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Yeah, not something in my lifetime I thought that we
- 5:23Speaker 4: would be talking about. But it does go to show
- 5:25Speaker 4: you two things to me more than anything else. Obviously,
- 5:29Speaker 4: money talks, we knew that. That's never been a debate.
- 5:32Speaker 4: But your leadership and the type of culture that you
- 5:37Speaker 4: set forth. What we've seen with Nebraska and Fred Hoiberg,
- 5:41Speaker 4: it's taken form, it's taken hold. He had this visual
- 5:45Speaker 4: and it's been building. It's been building. Remember two years
- 5:47Speaker 4: ago they went on a run in the Big Ten Tournament.
- 5:50Speaker 4: They opened some eyes around the country that maybe they
- 5:53Speaker 4: could be a factor, and then took a step back
- 5:55Speaker 4: last year. Well, they're back with a vengeance, and it
- 5:58Speaker 4: just shows that a a really solid leader and building
- 6:04Speaker 4: a team and a culture can work. Kurtzittingett, he enough said,
- 6:07Speaker 4: I mean, this guy came in with confidence. He's not
- 6:10Speaker 4: the first to have bravado, but he's among the first
- 6:13Speaker 4: to really back it up in short order.
- 6:17Speaker 3: And of the three one seeds left Michigan, Arizona and Duke,
- 6:21Speaker 3: it feels like Duke, what crazy enough, is the one
- 6:23Speaker 3: being overlooked the most. What does Patrick Gumba due to
- 6:27Speaker 3: Duke's ceiling now that he's.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Back, I thought he changed everything from round one to
- 6:33Speaker 4: round two, all of the confidence that Sienna built in
- 6:37Speaker 4: the first round, getting towards the ram, not feeling like
- 6:40Speaker 4: there was a real hurdle for them. On the defensive end,
- 6:46Speaker 4: Duke is known as a great defensive team. I didn't
- 6:48Speaker 4: feel that in the first half against Siena. That team
- 6:51Speaker 4: just gained confidence, and I thought a lot of it
- 6:54Speaker 4: was based on the fact that you didn't have the
- 6:56Speaker 4: presence of Gungba, a true shot blocker and a true
- 7:00Speaker 4: to throw them off their game. Second half, Duke, obviously
- 7:05Speaker 4: they found something and they regained their confidence. They looked
- 7:09Speaker 4: shell shocked. I mean, I'm telling you from the court
- 7:12Speaker 4: side of you looking into their eyes. In that first half,
- 7:16Speaker 4: it was truly a moment where I thought, personally, as
- 7:20Speaker 4: we had halftime, they could get clipped. They just didn't
- 7:24Speaker 4: have the look of a number one overall seed, of
- 7:26Speaker 4: a champion. And then they rally in the second half.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Second round, completely different story. Gungbo was a plus twenty
- 7:36Speaker 4: in thirteen minutes of action. That's the kind of impact
- 7:40Speaker 4: that he had. I thought what I noticed was TCU
- 7:44Speaker 4: all of those shots that were going down in the
- 7:46Speaker 4: first round against Ohio State, what Punch was doing around
- 7:50Speaker 4: the rim, He couldn't do any of it, any of it.
- 7:54Speaker 4: So I just think he's a huge factor. The Foster injury, though,
- 7:58Speaker 4: in a game like this and Saint John's could be
- 8:03Speaker 4: very serious because I just think Saint John's is going
- 8:08Speaker 4: to They're gonna sick the dogs on them. They're gonna
- 8:11Speaker 4: pick up full court, they're gonna harass them, They're gonna
- 8:15Speaker 4: challenge Duke to just get the ball across the line
- 8:20Speaker 4: to get into their offense. And I know this is
- 8:23Speaker 4: hard to say, but I think they might actually need
- 8:27Speaker 4: more right now from Cameron Boozer than they got in
- 8:32Speaker 4: the first two rounds, which was a lot, but in
- 8:34Speaker 4: this game in particular, he's gonna have to handle the
- 8:37Speaker 4: ball quite a bit. That's an additional responsibility that I'm
- 8:40Speaker 4: not sure they expected at this stage of the tournament.
- 8:43Speaker 2: It's fairly amazing that Rick Patino, at least for me,
- 8:46Speaker 2: growing up one of the most polarizing figures anywhere in sports,
- 8:49Speaker 2: and now he's beloved every team.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Every Taylor loves them.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Every team would want to be their head coach. It's
- 8:56Speaker 2: crazy what happened there the rules changed.
- 8:58Speaker 5: I guess, yeah, you know what, I think.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Obviously, different people handle things at different stages of their
- 9:03Speaker 4: life in different ways. I just think there's a real
- 9:08Speaker 4: joy that's coming through how he's conducting himself. And that's
- 9:12Speaker 4: not to say he didn't enjoy winning prior, but he
- 9:15Speaker 4: did it with a more serious tone. His press conferences
- 9:19Speaker 4: were often pretty direct, and now you're seeing the human
- 9:25Speaker 4: being behind the coach.
- 9:27Speaker 5: And that could be.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Aged, that could be experienced, that could be just based
- 9:31Speaker 4: on where he is in his life and this particular team.
- 9:35Speaker 4: But I've just noticed his comportment is different. He's enjoying
- 9:42Speaker 4: the hell out of this.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Yes, that goes a long way.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it really does.
- 9:57Speaker 2: As someone who graduated from Syracuse University. And we'll get
- 10:01Speaker 2: to that in just a second, because we did some
- 10:03Speaker 2: blind rankings with Danny.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Parkins and we'll give you the results here.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I just admitted, But are you a fan of the
- 10:10Speaker 2: hire of Jerry McNamara as your new head coach?
- 10:13Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 10:13Speaker 4: I thought Syracuse was going to deputize me at halftime
- 10:17Speaker 4: of that Sienna Duke game and just say, hey, just
- 10:20Speaker 4: go up to Jerry and tell them the gig is
- 10:23Speaker 4: his on behalf of Orange Nation. Just represent all of
- 10:27Speaker 4: us and get the deal done. Actually I have to urinate.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Can I do that first, because that's what I do
- 10:33Speaker 4: at halftime? No, I think it's a home run higher.
- 10:38Speaker 4: It's what they need right now. Look, they also need
- 10:42Speaker 4: the resources and the support. And as we know currently
- 10:45Speaker 4: in college basketball, it's a money game. But it's not
- 10:49Speaker 4: just how much money you have. As we've seen there
- 10:52Speaker 4: are a lot of programs that had big year spending
- 10:56Speaker 4: and didn't have the success that they were hoping for.
- 11:00Speaker 4: It is chemistry. It is connectivity with your guys. And
- 11:05Speaker 4: I do think he provides a very strong voice for
- 11:08Speaker 4: anyone that's never talked to Jerry McNamara or spend any
- 11:12Speaker 4: time with him.
- 11:13Speaker 5: He's got a lot of confidence at.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Confidence as a player, he's got confidence as a coach.
- 11:18Speaker 4: I think he believes in how he messages, and at
- 11:23Speaker 4: this juncture, this fan base needed something like this to
- 11:29Speaker 4: get behind. Would they have been fine with someone outside
- 11:32Speaker 4: the family. I think they probably would have if it
- 11:34Speaker 4: meant winning. But I think this is an added bonus
- 11:38Speaker 4: that he is a true blue Syracuse guy with a
- 11:41Speaker 4: national championship and a highlight reel as a player that
- 11:45Speaker 4: you can put on a loop, and he's already shown
- 11:48Speaker 4: that he's got the makings of an outstanding head coach.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Were you surprised that Carolina got rid of you, Bert Davis?
- 11:55Speaker 5: I was. I was.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Obviously we did that game in Greenville, and to myself, man,
- 12:01Speaker 4: how different would this look with Caleb Wilson in the lineup?
- 12:05Speaker 4: One of the best players in the country, probably a
- 12:08Speaker 4: top three pick, may even be the number one pick,
- 12:11Speaker 4: depending upon who's making that selection. I think if you
- 12:15Speaker 4: take the best player off of every roster in college basketball,
- 12:19Speaker 4: it's obviously very challenging to win and win consistently. If
- 12:24Speaker 4: they win that game. I always find this interesting in
- 12:26Speaker 4: the sliding doors world.
- 12:28Speaker 5: That we live in.
- 12:30Speaker 4: If they win that game, if they don't go to OT,
- 12:34Speaker 4: if they handle their business and hold off VCU and
- 12:39Speaker 4: then lose in the second round in a tight one
- 12:41Speaker 4: against Illinois, is there a change or no?
- 12:45Speaker 5: Probably not.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I will tell you this.
- 12:47Speaker 2: If he gets to the sweet sixteen with Caleb Wilson,
- 12:49Speaker 2: there is no change at all.
- 12:51Speaker 5: He's no no doubt, no doubt in my mind.
- 12:53Speaker 4: If they advance through this tournament with Caleb Wilson, Now
- 12:56Speaker 4: that's not a guarantee. Illinois tough, They're big, their physical
- 13:01Speaker 4: To me, they had one of the best opening weekends
- 13:04Speaker 4: of this tournament. How they looked it's based on a
- 13:07Speaker 4: number of factors. Their first round matchup was with Penn,
- 13:10Speaker 4: they just over matched them. And then the second round
- 13:14Speaker 4: they got this team that was an upstart squad that
- 13:16Speaker 4: didn't see themselves as a cinderella, but certainly pulled off
- 13:20Speaker 4: something in that first round, a nineteen point.
- 13:22Speaker 5: Comeback against UNC.
- 13:25Speaker 4: I think that there was something simmering clearly at UNC
- 13:31Speaker 4: previously that just percolated to the point where they couldn't
- 13:37Speaker 4: dismiss it, and they ended up dismissing Hubert in the process.
- 13:41Speaker 4: It's always weird when a player who was great at
- 13:45Speaker 4: a school ends up becoming a head coach of that
- 13:47Speaker 4: school and then has to move on, And now what's
- 13:52Speaker 4: the relationship Patrick Ewing Georgetown and Chris Mullen Saint John's.
- 13:58Speaker 4: They're a bunch of these examples where Red Autry Syracuse.
- 14:04Speaker 4: You don't know now what that dynamic is going to
- 14:07Speaker 4: be for the next five, ten, fifteen, twenty years. Does
- 14:10Speaker 4: Hubert ever walk on that campus again, or does he
- 14:14Speaker 4: get over at some point and have success somewhere else
- 14:17Speaker 4: and just say say, all right, this happened for a reason.
- 14:20Speaker 2: It's tricky because you know, they wanted to celebrate Youbert
- 14:23Speaker 2: Davis's career, and Hubert's like, no, I'm not done coaching.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I still want to be the coach at North Carolina.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Ye you, I don't want to celebrate my career. So
- 14:30Speaker 2: I don't know if he walks back on the campus again,
- 14:32Speaker 2: it's gonna be interesting. But it's also another sign of
- 14:36Speaker 2: how much the times have changed, where you have potentially
- 14:39Speaker 2: the Kansas job opening up, the Carolina job is open,
- 14:42Speaker 2: and Syracuse just filled their job.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Like those three jobs used to never come open. Eye
- 14:46Speaker 1: and it's crazy. Yeah, it really is.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Yeah, no, no, they had lifers. Those were lifers at
- 14:52Speaker 4: those Jim Beyheim was there forever as we know, prior
- 14:55Speaker 4: to that with Kansas, Roy Williams had the long stint,
- 14:58Speaker 4: followed by Bill's and then UNC had to tap dance
- 15:03Speaker 4: a little bit in the post Dean Smith era with
- 15:06Speaker 4: Guthridge and with Dougherty, Roy Williams obviously in there as well.
- 15:12Speaker 4: I just I think things are changing in the college
- 15:17Speaker 4: basketball landscape. And you know, it's funny, Stu Gott's when
- 15:21Speaker 4: you broke into the industry, sports radio was playing such
- 15:26Speaker 4: a role in a lot of these decisions because it
- 15:29Speaker 4: was the first time that decision makers could put an
- 15:34Speaker 4: outlet on and literally hear from their fan base. It
- 15:38Speaker 4: was just a small portion of their fan base, but
- 15:42Speaker 4: you get in a car and you turn on sports radio,
- 15:44Speaker 4: you would hear a talk show host in New York,
- 15:47Speaker 4: of course Mike and the Mad Dog, but callers checking
- 15:51Speaker 4: in and giving their opinion, and I do think it
- 15:55Speaker 4: affected decision maker's opinions on certain things. Now, let's just
- 16:00Speaker 4: move on to modern day. With Twitter, with individual podcasts,
- 16:08Speaker 4: with Reddit, with message boards, you now have outlets that
- 16:13Speaker 4: you could go to as an AD or as a
- 16:15Speaker 4: GM and you can get a sense of where the
- 16:18Speaker 4: wind is blowing. Again, fair, unfair, that's a whole different argument.
- 16:22Speaker 4: But it's real and it's happening.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Mike and demand dog got Piazza to the Mets.
- 16:27Speaker 5: Didn't they believe that?
- 16:31Speaker 4: It's you know, it's so funny. It's like one of
- 16:34Speaker 4: those where were you moments? And we do this all
- 16:37Speaker 4: of us as sports fans. I think sometimes people that
- 16:41Speaker 4: aren't sports fans don't understand how someone could have ridiculous
- 16:46Speaker 4: recall of dates and moments and what was happening in
- 16:51Speaker 4: their life at the time. I think as sports fans,
- 16:54Speaker 4: we tend to naturally catalog moments in our brain of
- 16:58Speaker 4: what you were doing, what was happening, how to affect
- 17:03Speaker 4: other aspects of your life. So the Mike Piazza thing,
- 17:07Speaker 4: I was on vacation with my family at Disney and
- 17:12Speaker 4: walking around Disney like dealing with the lines, the heat.
- 17:17Speaker 4: You know, I could only do this in the summer
- 17:18Speaker 4: because of my schedule, so I only took my kids
- 17:21Speaker 4: to Disney when it was one hundred and seven degrees right.
- 17:26Speaker 5: This was to a complete and utter tour.
- 17:28Speaker 4: We did it four times, and on the fourth one,
- 17:32Speaker 4: my wife and I looked at each other and we said,
- 17:35Speaker 4: never again.
- 17:36Speaker 5: We were defeated as human beings.
- 17:39Speaker 4: So that particular day, my son was a Mets fan
- 17:43Speaker 4: and I was young, and I remember getting the news
- 17:47Speaker 4: at Disney and he was sweating his balls off as
- 17:52Speaker 4: a little kid wearing a tank top or an NBA jersey,
- 17:56Speaker 4: and I.
- 17:57Speaker 6: Said, the Mets got Mike Piazzi's no way it affected
- 18:01Speaker 6: his life. I guarantee you, if you asked Noah right now,
- 18:05Speaker 6: where were you when the Mets got Mike Piazza, you
- 18:07Speaker 6: remember it, and You're right. Mike, Mike and the Mad
- 18:11Speaker 6: Dog very much went with the narrative that they made
- 18:15Speaker 6: it happen.
- 18:15Speaker 5: And maybe they did.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Yes, I mean, listen, I remember where I was when
- 18:18Speaker 2: Laterner hit.
- 18:19Speaker 1: The shot against Piazza.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Completely.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Get Noah on the show please, because I want to
- 18:25Speaker 2: have where it was when this happens. I'm glad you
- 18:29Speaker 2: brought him up because I'm wondering, can you explain the
- 18:31Speaker 2: difference for you emotionally you calling a game as opposed
- 18:35Speaker 2: to listening to your son call the game, because I'm
- 18:39Speaker 2: guessing it feels better listening to your son do it.
- 18:41Speaker 5: Yeah, you're you're right.
- 18:43Speaker 1: You know.
- 18:43Speaker 4: It's funny when I have people come up to me
- 18:47Speaker 4: and and they're saying something really nice and I take
- 18:51Speaker 4: it as such, but they say, hey, I heard your son.
- 18:54Speaker 5: And man, he he might end up being better than you.
- 18:58Speaker 4: So it's like this weird back ahead to compliment, but
- 19:01Speaker 4: it's a full on compliment.
- 19:03Speaker 5: I want him to be better. Of course, we want
- 19:06Speaker 5: our children to do better than us. So yeah, a
- 19:10Speaker 5: lot of pride.
- 19:11Speaker 4: And you know, my wife and I there are moments
- 19:13Speaker 4: watching a game where we one one hundred percent look at.
- 19:18Speaker 5: One another and just think, how did this happen?
- 19:22Speaker 4: This little kid that now has the ability to go
- 19:28Speaker 4: on the air and show no signs of nervousness or
- 19:31Speaker 4: anxiety and just do his thing and do it with
- 19:35Speaker 4: a sense of passion and a sense of purpose. So
- 19:40Speaker 4: it's been this whole other chapter that has been unexpected completely.
- 19:46Speaker 4: But I do feel for my wife, who really was
- 19:49Speaker 4: not a huge sports fan before all of this started.
- 19:51Speaker 4: She went through thirty years of having to watch my games.
- 19:55Speaker 4: I didn't make her, but you know she did, just to.
- 19:58Speaker 5: Feel a part of it.
- 20:00Speaker 4: This whole other avenue in which she has to watch
- 20:04Speaker 4: games or listen to games involving my son. I think
- 20:08Speaker 4: she consumes more NBA than any person in her friend group.
- 20:14Speaker 5: Why don't we just leave it at that.
- 20:16Speaker 2: I could safely tell you twenty years doing the show
- 20:18Speaker 2: with LeBatard, my wife never listened.
- 20:23Speaker 1: She didn't want to.
- 20:25Speaker 5: Yeah, she's probably better. I'm gonna be honest with you.
- 20:29Speaker 5: The Stutts in her is not strong.
- 20:31Speaker 1: No, no, no, it's not. So it's interesting.
- 20:35Speaker 2: So you take a great deal, probably because yes, it's
- 20:37Speaker 2: great watching. You want your kids to be a better
- 20:39Speaker 2: version of yourself. Do you find it hard not to
- 20:42Speaker 2: give him pointers from time to time?
- 20:44Speaker 1: And does he you do? Does he receive them? Well?
- 20:46Speaker 5: No, no, I don't find it hard at all.
- 20:48Speaker 4: My my pointers are usually mixed in with something else.
- 20:53Speaker 4: It's never a text after a game. Hey, here's eleven
- 20:57Speaker 4: things that I really think you need to I'm not
- 21:02Speaker 4: a douchebag, first and foremost, and then second, I just
- 21:06Speaker 4: don't parent that way. I never parented that way. It's
- 21:10Speaker 4: usually in the form of some other conversation. And if
- 21:15Speaker 4: something strikes me in the moment that I think could
- 21:18Speaker 4: help him, I absolutely will share with him. But I
- 21:23Speaker 4: also have to let him do his own thing and
- 21:26Speaker 4: do it his way. But I think he would tell
- 21:29Speaker 4: you that our relationship has obviously had this new spin
- 21:33Speaker 4: to it because we do the same job. But at
- 21:35Speaker 4: the core, it's still what it always was, and the
- 21:40Speaker 4: broadcasting part has just been an add on. It's not
- 21:43Speaker 4: replaced something else.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Has he gained enough confidence here where perhaps from time
- 21:49Speaker 2: to time he'll reach out to Dad and give Dad
- 21:51Speaker 2: some pointers.
- 21:55Speaker 5: No, that would not be well accepted by any stretch.
- 21:58Speaker 4: No, Now you've got to know your yes.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Even at this age, I.
- 22:04Speaker 5: Can ground him.
- 22:04Speaker 4: That's that's not a problem. I still have authority. That's
- 22:08Speaker 4: not an issue. No, if he ever noticed something, I
- 22:10Speaker 4: would want him to tell me. So it is a
- 22:13Speaker 4: two way street and that's how it should be.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Is Bill Raftery because for me he is I don't
- 22:19Speaker 2: want to say he's underrated.
- 22:20Speaker 1: He just kind of flies under the radar just a
- 22:22Speaker 1: little bit.
- 22:22Speaker 2: But I feel like he's the best sports analyst we
- 22:24Speaker 2: have going You agree.
- 22:27Speaker 5: I think he might be the best of all time. Truly.
- 22:30Speaker 1: He's so good in.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Terms of the mix that you're looking for as a viewer.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Of course, you want analysis, you want to hear someone's
- 22:40Speaker 4: knowledge and preparation, and I think Bill probably hasn't gotten
- 22:44Speaker 4: enough credit for that part of it. His prowess as
- 22:48Speaker 4: an analyst is legit. He coached in the Big East,
- 22:51Speaker 4: he was a headman for Senall. He's been around basketball
- 22:54Speaker 4: his whole life. He was a highly accomplished player, which
- 22:57Speaker 4: he downplays, but he was. At one point he was
- 23:00Speaker 4: the all time leading scorer in the state of New
- 23:02Speaker 4: Jersey as a high school player for many years. It
- 23:06Speaker 4: only recently went down went to LaSalle, was a tremendous
- 23:10Speaker 4: player at LaSalle, and only because at the time the
- 23:14Speaker 4: NBA didn't have a lot of teams. He ended up
- 23:18Speaker 4: getting cut by the New York Knicks. But in any
- 23:21Speaker 4: kind of expanded format, he's an NBA player and would
- 23:25Speaker 4: have played in the league. So that changes your persona
- 23:28Speaker 4: a bit. I think he leaned into the other side,
- 23:32Speaker 4: which was very comfortable for him self, deprecation and using
- 23:39Speaker 4: that to his advantage, because sometimes people will underestimate you
- 23:43Speaker 4: when you approach life that way. The part that sets
- 23:47Speaker 4: him to a category by himself is his feel for
- 23:54Speaker 4: the moment and when it's time to really punch with
- 24:00Speaker 4: something that is memorable. And grabs your attention and fits the.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Event, Yes, the moment.
- 24:09Speaker 4: He knows how to caption, and I can tell you
- 24:12Speaker 4: I've worked with him. You know, we're talking about the
- 24:15Speaker 4: better part of thirty years, which is hard for me
- 24:17Speaker 4: to wrap my brain around. It really is off the cuff.
- 24:22Speaker 4: This is not a guy that's got a yellow legal
- 24:24Speaker 4: pad with a bunch of sayings on it. He just
- 24:28Speaker 4: can intuitively hit the right moment with the right words.
- 24:35Speaker 4: And it's incredibly memorable, and it's also it's highly it's
- 24:41Speaker 4: highly relatable. It really feels like someone you would be
- 24:45Speaker 4: sitting on the couch with watching the game, right that
- 24:47Speaker 4: would that would say that and would crack you up.
- 24:51Speaker 2: And for you calling the game, it has to be
- 24:52Speaker 2: such a comfort to know he's always got it.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Whatever you need, he always has it for you know
- 24:57Speaker 1: he does.
- 24:58Speaker 5: He does.
- 24:59Speaker 4: And I've I've said this before, but it's worth reiterating.
- 25:03Speaker 4: Amidst all of these things that I've been incredibly fortunate
- 25:07Speaker 4: to be a part of in my broadcasting career, the
- 25:11Speaker 4: one thing that I know, if not for this, none
- 25:16Speaker 4: of it would would have happened, and that was getting
- 25:18Speaker 4: paired with him in nineteen ninety five on New Jersey
- 25:23Speaker 4: Nets broadcast, because just being around him taught me things
- 25:29Speaker 4: that I never would have known in how to do
- 25:31Speaker 4: the job, how to approach the job, how to blur
- 25:35Speaker 4: the line between your personality and the persona that you're
- 25:39Speaker 4: putting on the air, how to do it with a
- 25:42Speaker 4: sense of fun and levity, but also the preparedness and
- 25:47Speaker 4: not taking any broadcast for granted.
- 25:50Speaker 5: We did some.
- 25:51Speaker 4: Bad NETS teams, yes, really bad Nets teams, yes. And
- 25:55Speaker 4: I can tell you, even though we may have not
- 25:57Speaker 4: had many viewers, Bill and I still treated it like
- 26:01Speaker 4: it was going across the globe, right.
- 26:04Speaker 5: We always felt like it mattered.
- 26:07Speaker 4: And I think that was something that was one hundred
- 26:10Speaker 4: percent planted in my head because of him and because
- 26:13Speaker 4: of his approach.
- 26:15Speaker 2: We'll get you out here in just a second, and
- 26:16Speaker 2: we appreciate you doing this. I did want to thank you.
- 26:18Speaker 2: I've been meaning to thank you for some time now.
- 26:20Speaker 2: I've been railing against this forever. When you come back
- 26:23Speaker 2: into a game, like a game in Miami, for example,
- 26:26Speaker 2: they come back the game's being played in Miami Gardens,
- 26:29Speaker 2: yet they pan in through the Cleveland. They're on South Beach,
- 26:32Speaker 2: which is forty five minutes away from really playing the
- 26:34Speaker 2: actual game.
- 26:35Speaker 1: And I was watching you. I think it was a
- 26:38Speaker 1: Jack Gabe, Yes it was.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Yes, it took us through the shithole that is New
- 26:41Speaker 2: Jersey because you too are upset. Hey don't put us
- 26:44Speaker 2: in New York City. We're in New Jersey and you
- 26:47Speaker 2: took us through New Jersey and I wanted to thank
- 26:49Speaker 2: you for doing that.
- 26:50Speaker 5: I am yeah, No, that means a lots to guts.
- 26:52Speaker 4: That that one I think resonated. I think there's a
- 26:55Speaker 4: certain kind of audience that that thing. So who cares whatever,
- 26:59Speaker 4: show me anything. I want to see the game.
- 27:01Speaker 5: But then there's another faction and I.
- 27:04Speaker 4: Would be included in that thank you where I am
- 27:08Speaker 4: not happy. If you're showing something from a different area
- 27:11Speaker 4: but claiming it's within that area, you're misleading me.
- 27:17Speaker 5: How can I trust you? Your credibility is shot.
- 27:21Speaker 4: We had a thing and I'll do this sometimes in
- 27:24Speaker 4: a passive aggressive way with our crew. We have a
- 27:27Speaker 4: tremendous crew and everybody that works on the show I
- 27:31Speaker 4: truly have the ultimate respect for in every single role.
- 27:35Speaker 4: They care, it matters, they take it seriously, but they
- 27:38Speaker 4: do it with a smile and the right attitude. But
- 27:41Speaker 4: we were in Chicago doing the Big Ten Championship and the.
- 27:47Speaker 5: Final on Sunday. The weather was brutal, brutal.
- 27:53Speaker 4: It was heavy rain, wind, there was the chance of snow,
- 27:58Speaker 4: and we're coming back from break and they're gonna show
- 28:01Speaker 4: me the shot that they're using that I'll do the
- 28:03Speaker 4: next set of billboards over right. And I said to them,
- 28:06Speaker 4: I go, is that a live shot? They go, no, no, no, no,
- 28:10Speaker 4: I go, it's really nice out right now. Is that
- 28:12Speaker 4: what you're telling me. They're like, no, it isn't. We'll
- 28:15Speaker 4: get you another shot. Like, don't mislead the public.
- 28:18Speaker 5: Yes, yes, don't show me a picture from Chicago eight
- 28:21Speaker 5: years ago to try to sell it as this is
- 28:25Speaker 5: what's happening right now and yes in the Windy City.
- 28:28Speaker 5: I don't buy it. You're not alone.
- 28:29Speaker 2: McDonald's with us, by the way, because when he was
- 28:31Speaker 2: doing the hockey and it was in Sunrise, Florida, they
- 28:34Speaker 2: would pan hit through South Beach and Fort Lauderdale Beach
- 28:37Speaker 2: and Sean's like, hey, we're out by a mall.
- 28:39Speaker 5: Like yeah, yeah. Have you ever been to Jacksonville? You
- 28:43Speaker 5: guys ever been to Jacksonville?
- 28:44Speaker 1: Of course yes.
- 28:46Speaker 4: So when I got the NFL on CBS job in
- 28:49Speaker 4: nineteen ninety eight. I had never been to Jacksonville before.
- 28:52Speaker 4: So I go to Jacksonville and I'm curious. I, well,
- 28:55Speaker 4: you know, where do you hang?
- 28:57Speaker 1: Like?
- 28:57Speaker 5: Oh, I got to go to the Landing? Really?
- 29:00Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah?
- 29:02Speaker 4: So you go to the landing and it's basically a
- 29:05Speaker 4: circle cement with some restaurants and some shops and that's it.
- 29:12Speaker 5: It's nothing beyond that. Now it's on the water, so
- 29:15Speaker 5: that part was.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Nice, right, it's a place to drink, place to drink.
- 29:18Speaker 5: Basically.
- 29:19Speaker 4: I think there was like a fake Hooters there. So
- 29:24Speaker 4: at some point about I don't know, four years ago,
- 29:28Speaker 4: they got rid of the landing. It just went away. Yes,
- 29:31Speaker 4: the shops went away, the restaurants went away. I don't
- 29:35Speaker 4: know what they're doing at the landing, but it doesn't exist, right,
- 29:38Speaker 4: And I'm watching a game two years ago and they
- 29:42Speaker 4: have a shot of the landing in Jacksonville. Dude, it
- 29:52Speaker 4: doesn't fucking exist.
- 29:54Speaker 5: It's closed. What are we doing?
- 30:01Speaker 2: I'm glad I'm not alone. Thanks, good, All right, we'll
- 30:05Speaker 2: get you out of here. Danny Parkins was on with
- 30:07Speaker 2: us yesterday. We did blind rankings of Syracuse alone, What
- 30:11Speaker 2: do we do? Mikey keep three cut five, keep three
- 30:14Speaker 2: cut five of Syracuse broadcasters all time.
- 30:17Speaker 1: So well, Mikey's just gonna recap it for you.
- 30:20Speaker 5: Yeah, I want to hear it.
- 30:21Speaker 7: Yeah, okay, So they cut, and I say they because
- 30:27Speaker 7: I was just here.
- 30:29Speaker 1: He was the game show host.
- 30:31Speaker 7: Yes, yes, they cut Sean McDonough, They cut Scott Hansen,
- 30:37Speaker 7: they cut Marv Albert, they cut Bob Costas, and they
- 30:44Speaker 7: cut Iron Eagle.
- 30:45Speaker 1: I did it, Danny did and Taylor. That's it. I
- 30:48Speaker 1: did not.
- 30:48Speaker 7: They kept Turrico, they kept Nick right, and they kept
- 30:53Speaker 7: Jeff passing.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Right now, I didn't keep Nick right, Okay, Danny and Taylor.
- 30:57Speaker 4: Dan, I still I still got love for Danny.
- 31:05Speaker 5: I understand bread is buttered. I get that.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Yes, it's a tough spot because you're liking these things,
- 31:13Speaker 2: not knowing what the next name is.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Going to be.
- 31:16Speaker 5: Why justice is going to be pissed.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Well, that's what Danny was worried about. Yeah, yes, but
- 31:22Speaker 1: we did it Danny on purpose.
- 31:23Speaker 5: So you know he's Danny, You're out of the family.
- 31:29Speaker 7: He was worried that Matthew Berry was going to be
- 31:31Speaker 7: the last name.
- 31:31Speaker 1: So you guys that's why.
- 31:33Speaker 5: That's why he'll put a hit out on him. That'll
- 31:35Speaker 5: be the end of it.
- 31:37Speaker 1: But can you believe Taylor keeping you off that list? Huh?
- 31:40Speaker 7: I mean.
- 31:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:43Speaker 3: I was the deciding vote, and I felt I felt
- 31:46Speaker 3: bad instantly.
- 31:47Speaker 4: Yep, because you knew I was coming up the next
- 31:49Speaker 4: day later later.
- 31:52Speaker 5: This is hours ago.
- 31:57Speaker 1: I got blinded trying to hold out for Craig Carton. Yes,
- 32:02Speaker 1: and I was hoping Carton would never be mentioned.
- 32:06Speaker 5: Tremendous.
- 32:07Speaker 1: So good you got a deep roster there at Syracuse.
- 32:09Speaker 2: My man, it is not bad, so much better than
- 32:13Speaker 2: Northwestern's right where my daughter goes.
- 32:15Speaker 5: Yes, I yeah, I saw that on social media. Congratulations.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Yes, I'm in Chapel Hill right now. I want to
- 32:21Speaker 2: say boots on the ground for the for the youuber
- 32:23Speaker 2: Davis story, but I be lying. I'm here for Northwestern
- 32:25Speaker 2: North Carolina game. I look forward to the games this weekend.
- 32:30Speaker 2: I look forward to your call of the games along
- 32:32Speaker 2: with Bill and Grant. You guys are fantastic. Thanks, thank
- 32:35Speaker 2: you so much for doing this. Man, you are great,
- 32:37Speaker 2: my pleasure. Great to be on with you guys. All right,
- 32:40Speaker 2: I'm booking you next week for the just before the
- 32:41Speaker 2: Final four because I have to reach out to you
- 32:45Speaker 2: right before you call your biggest sporting events.
- 32:47Speaker 5: Yes, I would have done it until the blind rankings.
- 32:50Speaker 1: And then I kept you in.
- 32:52Speaker 5: That ended it
