- 0:01Speaker 1: Minnesota Vikings fans, Welcome back to the Purple People Leaders Podcast.
- 0:07Speaker 1: He's Aaron, I'm Chris, and we're here to unfortunately talk
- 0:11Speaker 1: about the Vikings lost. It's been a long time since
- 0:16Speaker 1: we lost. Funny enough, it was back to back games
- 0:19Speaker 1: Detroit and then you guessed it the Rams and you know,
- 0:24Speaker 1: we went on a hell of a one of the
- 0:26Speaker 1: longest streaks we've had since we've been watching the Vikings,
- 0:29Speaker 1: so or the longest streaks since we've been watching the Vikings,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and we're talking, you know, they had longer streaks like
- 0:36Speaker 1: in the seventies. But yeah, it was. It was a
- 0:39Speaker 1: rough one. It was a rough one. Sam had a
- 0:43Speaker 1: lot of issues. I think that's the main focus. The
- 0:49Speaker 1: offensive line interior had more, you know issues, no doubt.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I thought they planned some you know, they the blitzes
- 0:56Speaker 1: and all that was really good. I would liked to
- 0:58Speaker 1: see them run the ball more, if I we're we're
- 1:00Speaker 1: just talking about it. The defense played pretty damn good
- 1:03Speaker 1: until the levee finally broke. So we're gonna break it
- 1:07Speaker 1: on down. This one hurts because of what it meant, right,
- 1:10Speaker 1: the number one seed, a week off in home field advantage,
- 1:15Speaker 1: that no longer is the case. So we'll break this
- 1:18Speaker 1: one down and then preview and predict next week against
- 1:23Speaker 1: the Rams. The rematch against the Rams, can they get
- 1:27Speaker 1: it done? Let's hope, And then, of course, per usual,
- 1:30Speaker 1: we always end the show with a gover football segment,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and that's eight in a row. Now, eight bowl game
- 1:37Speaker 1: wins in a row capped off a pretty solid season,
- 1:41Speaker 1: especially starting out the way you start out record wise.

- 3:08Speaker 1: let's go ahead and bring in Aaron the co host
- 3:12Speaker 1: of the show. Aaron Man. It was a rough one
- 3:17Speaker 1: and through about three quarters it was sitting there right
- 3:21Speaker 1: for us and they just couldn't get it done. My friend.
- 3:30Speaker 2: You muted by the way, Hey, sorry as I'm mute. Yeah,
- 3:39Speaker 2: I'm not sure we left off there. I We've been
- 3:44Speaker 2: saying for years, Chris, and we'll say it again that
- 3:50Speaker 2: there's problems with this team. We thought, you know that
- 3:53Speaker 2: we were skating through a little bit with it. But
- 3:55Speaker 2: running the ball is a huge thing, and if you
- 3:56Speaker 2: can't run the ball, particularly in the red zone, you're
- 3:58Speaker 2: gonna have problems. That comes back to offensive line, interior
- 4:03Speaker 2: offensive line in particular. I think Cam's good enough. Obviously,
- 4:07Speaker 2: Brian O'Neil's a really good tackle, and if you had
- 4:10Speaker 2: Darrisaw that might change a little bit. But you're still
- 4:13Speaker 2: Bradbury Brandle and now Reisner, who we know is not
- 4:16Speaker 2: a great run blocker, supposed to be a better pass
- 4:19Speaker 2: protector than a run blocker, and so it just kind
- 4:23Speaker 2: of showed its ugly head again. Obviously, you know, Sam
- 4:28Speaker 2: could have hit more passes a lot of those overthrowers.
- 4:33Speaker 2: He was nervous. It was just we'll get into the
- 4:35Speaker 2: whole Sam situation there, but you know that to me
- 4:41Speaker 2: was really the thing. When you're down in the red
- 4:43Speaker 2: zone multiple times and you have to throw the ball
- 4:46Speaker 2: three out of four times. I think the total was
- 4:49Speaker 2: something like eight out of twelve or I don't remember
- 4:51Speaker 2: exact numbers. I'm sure you have them, but you're throwing
- 4:54Speaker 2: the ball down there more than you should have to.
- 4:58Speaker 2: That just means that you can't run, and we haven't
- 5:01Speaker 2: been able to run down in the red zone for
- 5:04Speaker 2: quite a long time. Effect. I kin'd of remember a
- 5:08Speaker 2: team that was good in short yardage now, it's been
- 5:11Speaker 2: at least four or five years before, and it's just
- 5:14Speaker 2: one of those things where that's got to get fixed.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Obviously it won't be fixed in the next week or so,
- 5:20Speaker 2: but looking ahead, that's just been a problem defensive line
- 5:24Speaker 2: as well. But I really don't blame anything from that defense.
- 5:27Speaker 2: They held in, you know, very very well, and you
- 5:33Speaker 2: know you can't just hold a team like that out
- 5:35Speaker 2: for four quarters, especially when the offense is just doing nothing.
- 5:39Speaker 2: There's some missed opportunities, I think more so in the offense,
- 5:43Speaker 2: but you know, Van Gek could have caught that and
- 5:45Speaker 2: maybe changed the course of the game. But by then
- 5:48Speaker 2: it was just so frustrating seeing the frustration on Sam's face,
- 5:52Speaker 2: and you know O'Connell's phase and all that stuff. It's just,
- 5:56Speaker 2: you know, you were in a position to make that
- 5:58Speaker 2: a really good game or win, and had you thrown
- 6:01Speaker 2: some better balls or just brought things down a Floyd.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I mean, there's just multiple times Jefferson in back to
- 6:06Speaker 2: the end zone, Addison in the flat, Addison on the
- 6:10Speaker 2: slant TJ. There's just a lot of opportunities that it
- 6:14Speaker 2: just seemed like the moment might have been too big
- 6:17Speaker 2: for Sam and it was a big moment last game
- 6:21Speaker 2: of the season. You're in Ford Field for the division
- 6:24Speaker 2: number one seed. It's a lot, but you should be
- 6:27Speaker 2: able to handle that, or at least keep your poise.
- 6:29Speaker 2: And I think that's really the problem here. A lot
- 6:32Speaker 2: of complaints about koc and whatnot. I really don't think
- 6:34Speaker 2: that has anything to do with it. I think it's
- 6:36Speaker 2: just quarterback lost its poise, got in his head and
- 6:40Speaker 2: just couldn't get out of.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean I did hear a lot of well,
- 6:46Speaker 1: they needed to make adjustments and all that stuff. I mean,
- 6:51Speaker 1: if you're talking about minor stuff, sure, the one thing
- 6:55Speaker 1: I will say is the run well was effective. It
- 7:03Speaker 1: wasn't all that big run by Acres. There was more
- 7:10Speaker 1: to it. So I guess that's my biggest takeaway would
- 7:15Speaker 1: be an adjustment. I mean, nineteen carries a buck twenty
- 7:18Speaker 1: six point three a pop, and like I said, Acres
- 7:23Speaker 1: you could say most of his running was that fifty
- 7:25Speaker 1: eight yard running because he had six for sixty five.
- 7:28Speaker 1: But Aaron Jones had ten carriages for forty five yards
- 7:31Speaker 1: four pointy five eclips, so I would have liked to
- 7:34Speaker 1: see them run the ball more. But in the end,
- 7:41Speaker 1: you know. That's really the only thing. Otherwise, a lot
- 7:46Speaker 1: of this came down to Sam Darnold. I mean, you know,
- 7:51Speaker 1: a lot of people because we're winning, overrated him, no doubt,
- 7:57Speaker 1: Like they have MVP and all that, And I've always
- 8:00Speaker 1: made I can understand the debate or the argument or
- 8:04Speaker 1: like if you have a top five pole of who's
- 8:07Speaker 1: the MV began at the top five or seven, I
- 8:10Speaker 1: understand why Sam would be in there. He's having a
- 8:12Speaker 1: great year and his team's winning, so I get that part.
- 8:16Speaker 1: But he's just not He's he was nowhere near the
- 8:20Speaker 1: MVP though, like the actual MVP, A lot of it
- 8:24Speaker 1: was his environment because he would have already had solid
- 8:28Speaker 1: to great years prior to getting here, you know, and
- 8:33Speaker 1: he just misthrows left and right. Whether he was off target,
- 8:37Speaker 1: like you said, it started out really high. A lot
- 8:39Speaker 1: of the balls were high. And of course you could say,
- 8:43Speaker 1: oh TJ on the first that first uh, that first
- 8:46Speaker 1: throw early that was on a on a third down,
- 8:50Speaker 1: it would have been a first down. Could TJ made
- 8:52Speaker 1: a great catch Shirt or JJ in the back of
- 8:54Speaker 1: the end zone, Sure I could have. But pretty much
- 8:57Speaker 1: Darnold was just off its timing his accuracy and he
- 9:03Speaker 1: holds the ball. We know that he held the ball
- 9:05Speaker 1: too much and he just didn't pull the trigger. There's
- 9:08Speaker 1: times where it looks like when you're watching it on film,
- 9:11Speaker 1: that the helmet's turned right to the guy Addison on
- 9:13Speaker 1: the slant and he just didn't throw the ball, you know.
- 9:18Speaker 1: And then it's like now, because like I said, there
- 9:21Speaker 1: was plenty of pressure on him, and some of that
- 9:24Speaker 1: pressure he couldn't doing about. And some of those ten
- 9:27Speaker 1: hits he couldn't doing about. That's fair not talking about
- 9:30Speaker 1: that stuff. Some of those hits though, and some of
- 9:34Speaker 1: those sacks were on him too because he held the
- 9:37Speaker 1: damn ball or he tried to do that spin where
- 9:40Speaker 1: if if it's clogged up over there, especially when he
- 9:44Speaker 1: goes out to his left, don't do this spin. If
- 9:47Speaker 1: they're like, if it's there, if there's an open lane
- 9:50Speaker 1: or something like that. Sure, but he.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it turns. It turns a six yard sack into
- 9:55Speaker 2: a thirteen fourteen. Yeah, you get caught exactly.
- 10:00Speaker 1: That's exactly it. It's in fact, I'm looking right at
- 10:03Speaker 1: one need to throw the ball away. It was on
- 10:05Speaker 1: a play action and it turned it into a second
- 10:08Speaker 1: and twenty seven to your point, and then when he
- 10:11Speaker 1: was third and eighteen, another ball was high on that one.
- 10:14Speaker 1: So like it just that's why we lost the game
- 10:18Speaker 1: because Sam didn't come to play. He just didn't. Like
- 10:23Speaker 1: I said, I'm not talking about when he got hit
- 10:25Speaker 1: and thrown or when there was no time or the
- 10:27Speaker 1: blitz was timed perfectly or called perfectly. I'm not talking
- 10:31Speaker 1: about any of that, but there was times where and
- 10:34Speaker 1: I give credit to the coverage too. Their their defense,
- 10:38Speaker 1: their defensive back generally do well against us these last
- 10:42Speaker 1: two and a half three years. They're rough and tough
- 10:45Speaker 1: with us. And that's why when people say they kept
- 10:48Speaker 1: saying those short stuff throws screens are not screens, but
- 10:54Speaker 1: like just short stuff whatever, slant screens, whatever, it's like,
- 10:57Speaker 1: I hear you. I'm not saying some of that wouldn't work,
- 11:00Speaker 1: but they were on. These dudes ran the line, roughing
- 11:04Speaker 1: them up. It just doesn't you know, And then and
- 11:07Speaker 1: ay that, but that's exactly what Addison was running was
- 11:11Speaker 1: a damn slant that was wide him for a touchdown.
- 11:14Speaker 1: So he didn't come to play. That's it. There's no
- 11:18Speaker 1: other thing there really isn't. The defense did enough to
- 11:22Speaker 1: win this game due to the corners and then the
- 11:25Speaker 1: levee broke. Could you, like you said, the interior of
- 11:29Speaker 1: the line. It's better this year, it's still not up
- 11:32Speaker 1: to a championship level and it's not all that close.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Really, yeah, I mean, it doesn't help that Sam was
- 11:38Speaker 2: holding onto the ball so much. It never has helped,
- 11:41Speaker 2: but I think that you know, Sam's been under a
- 11:43Speaker 2: lot of pressure for most of the season, particularly from
- 11:46Speaker 2: the inside, and has managed to deal with it. I just think, man,
- 11:49Speaker 2: he was probably in his head last night, tryina and
- 11:52Speaker 2: don't lose this. And you know, a lot of the
- 11:54Speaker 2: talk today is how much money he lost in that
- 11:56Speaker 2: game last night, and maybe he was thinking about that.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Just don't throw picks or whatever it was that he
- 12:00Speaker 2: was thinking. It's hard to you know, maybe he was
- 12:02Speaker 2: just thinking, throw a safe pass. But whatever it was,
- 12:05Speaker 2: it got in the way. I mean, you missed wide
- 12:08Speaker 2: receivers that were open, particularly in the red zone. You
- 12:12Speaker 2: know some of the stuff. You threw a couple of
- 12:14Speaker 2: good balls too. That's always how it is with Sam,
- 12:16Speaker 2: and he does hold the ball. We've become accustomed to
- 12:18Speaker 2: that throughout the year. But it's where it costs you.
- 12:22Speaker 2: I mean, if you got Detroit's defensive line is and
- 12:25Speaker 2: what it was back in week five, but even before that,
- 12:30Speaker 2: and it was great before we even saw him, and
- 12:32Speaker 2: then Hutchinson went down. But you know, you're putting one
- 12:36Speaker 2: on one out with Addison and Jefferson. It's a ballsy
- 12:39Speaker 2: thing to do. If you can't make them pay, that's
- 12:42Speaker 2: an issue. And if you're throwing high or you're missing guys.
- 12:47Speaker 2: I mean that's why I get, you know, really upset,
- 12:49Speaker 2: because today I'm hearing either two things. I'm either hearing
- 12:53Speaker 2: Darnold or I'm here in KOC. And okay, you can
- 12:57Speaker 2: I can handle a couple complaints about k See, like
- 13:00Speaker 2: maybe you thought should have kicked the field goal instead
- 13:02Speaker 2: of going on fourth down. Reasonable argument. We can argue
- 13:05Speaker 2: about that, fair argument. But when you're talking about play calling,
- 13:09Speaker 2: you know, he's just doing what's worked for us all
- 13:11Speaker 2: year and it just has it. It just didn't work
- 13:13Speaker 2: last night. It was one reason. And you know, I
- 13:17Speaker 2: know a lot of people hitch their boats to Donald
- 13:19Speaker 2: way too early. It's like, all right, we wanted to
- 13:21Speaker 2: see how it played out. Now we know, high pressure
- 13:23Speaker 2: game situation that kind of melted down. Now, that doesn't
- 13:27Speaker 2: mean he can't bounce back. We were talking about this a
- 13:28Speaker 2: little bit off air. He can bounce back, have a
- 13:31Speaker 2: couple of really great games. We're back in Detroit or
- 13:34Speaker 2: whatever it is, in Philly for the NFC Championship game,
- 13:37Speaker 2: whatever it is. But at this point in time in
- 13:40Speaker 2: the season, we've seen, you know, a progression of Donald
- 13:44Speaker 2: play really well, had a bad couple of games Detroit Jaguars,
- 13:50Speaker 2: Rams wasn't particularly great, hit his stride again. And now
- 13:55Speaker 2: we're at this game, game eighteen in Detroit, game seventeen,
- 14:01Speaker 2: but eighteen week season, and we're starting to see some words. Now,
- 14:05Speaker 2: is it all Donald? Obviously no, it's not all Donald,
- 14:08Speaker 2: but it's a large chunk of the pie the way
- 14:11Speaker 2: he played last night. And you can't help but say, okay,
- 14:14Speaker 2: maybe you didn't see it coming, but you also can't
- 14:18Speaker 2: just you know, you can't dismiss the fact that some
- 14:23Speaker 2: people have been waiting all season for this to happen.
- 14:25Speaker 2: It's terrible timing. I'm not one of those people. I
- 14:28Speaker 2: thought maybe it was that, but you know, it's one
- 14:30Speaker 2: of those things where you can say and try to
- 14:33Speaker 2: put lipstiff on a pig, but I really think long
- 14:35Speaker 2: story short, that it's Donald last night, his nerves whatever.
- 14:38Speaker 2: It was just you know, blew some great offensive opportunities
- 14:42Speaker 2: which would have gave us some more points, keep us
- 14:44Speaker 2: in the game, possibly win that game.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you can really say that we would
- 14:51Speaker 1: have had a lead. Now you can. You can you know,
- 14:55Speaker 1: count everything a touchdown, which I don't like to do,
- 14:58Speaker 1: or you could say some field goals, touchdowns, whatever, but
- 15:01Speaker 1: at least ten points we could have had the lead
- 15:03Speaker 1: on I mean, you know, both teams came out ransom
- 15:08Speaker 1: plays didn't get many yards. It was zero zero. They
- 15:11Speaker 1: had that touchdown drive. You know, that was a little
- 15:16Speaker 1: bit frustrating on that one. Obviously, Gibbs ended up having
- 15:20Speaker 1: a twenty five yard run, but there was a third
- 15:25Speaker 1: and twelve holding call. Williams had a first down, Mattellus
- 15:29Speaker 1: almost got the sack. Maybe if he would have tried
- 15:32Speaker 1: for the ball, that would have helped a little bit.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Saint Brown kids in Saint Brown just kill us every time.
- 15:37Speaker 1: But so it was seven zip, No big deal, we
- 15:39Speaker 1: come right back, we lose. That's I think that that
- 15:42Speaker 1: play I'm talking about what we were talking about for
- 15:44Speaker 1: him holding the ball three plays negative eight yards, then
- 15:50Speaker 1: held them to a three and out negative twenty one yards.
- 15:53Speaker 1: By the way, that's with Gnard and somebody else I
- 15:55Speaker 1: think went nuts. You know. It's like, Okay, got the
- 15:59Speaker 1: ball back all the you know, had a nice drive
- 16:02Speaker 1: nine plays forty seven yards, turnover on downs, he missed
- 16:05Speaker 1: a touchdown, and and also there's you know, in this,
- 16:11Speaker 1: in this timeframe, there was what should have been a safety.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Clearly it was a safety. He did not throw it
- 16:19Speaker 1: to anybody, he was just getting rid of it. It
- 16:22Speaker 1: should have been a safety. But that's so it's it
- 16:24Speaker 1: would mean seven to two, but it also means they're
- 16:27Speaker 1: they're ticking to you. So unless we get some huge return,
- 16:30Speaker 1: it's still only seven to two, and we lost thirty
- 16:32Speaker 1: one or nine. So that's not that's not some big
- 16:35Speaker 1: turning point, you know, because we got the ball at
- 16:39Speaker 1: the seven yard line because there was a pick, you know,
- 16:43Speaker 1: a tip from a tellus and who was it that?
- 16:48Speaker 1: Why am I missing it? He almost got a second
- 16:52Speaker 1: touchdown against them, So we got it at the seven
- 16:56Speaker 1: four plays, zero yards and two times where it's like, dude,
- 17:00Speaker 1: you either overthrew it or you missed a wide open guy.
- 17:04Speaker 1: So okay, whatever, got a field goal out of it.
- 17:09Speaker 1: They got a nice little drive turnover on downs. The
- 17:13Speaker 1: defense now got to pick and a turn around downs
- 17:15Speaker 1: and had him punting twice already. We're still in the
- 17:18Speaker 1: first half. Go down there, nice drive. It sounds familiar.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Nine plays forty five yards, had to settle for another
- 17:26Speaker 1: field goal, and then the fucking kicker. First of all
- 17:30Speaker 1: that extra point. I mean, those kicks are looking shaky
- 17:34Speaker 1: as well now, just barely making it. And then he
- 17:37Speaker 1: kicks no trickery. KOs said, no, we were just having
- 17:40Speaker 1: a kickoff. Dude. We're not gonna do any trick year.
- 17:43Speaker 1: And we allowed them to have some life there. And
- 17:46Speaker 1: when you and you can say, o, well, the defense
- 17:48Speaker 1: should give it up. Those plays, okay, but you're you're
- 17:51Speaker 1: facing the number one offense in the league by a lot.
- 17:54Speaker 1: They score thirty three points. We still held them under
- 17:57Speaker 1: their average. That's two times in a round. Oh, and
- 18:01Speaker 1: then we come out and we drive, drive, drive, We
- 18:05Speaker 1: get it to the two yard line and we can't
- 18:09Speaker 1: it's a turnover round downs, but halfway you know, at
- 18:13Speaker 1: a deep ball. I don't know why he threw it,
- 18:15Speaker 1: but Harrison made a great catch. Actually it was a
- 18:17Speaker 1: tough catch because he had to go way up high
- 18:21Speaker 1: and we get the ball at half field or or
- 18:24Speaker 1: you know, midfield half field, midfield had to sell for
- 18:27Speaker 1: a field goal. Now they finally put a hell of
- 18:30Speaker 1: a you know, a hell of a drive together, thirteen plays,
- 18:34Speaker 1: seventy yards, seven to twenty five in the clock. That
- 18:37Speaker 1: was impressive, but we're still only seventeen to nine, and
- 18:41Speaker 1: that could be twenty to seventeen at that point, still
- 18:44Speaker 1: us having the lead, missed another field goal, punt, turnover
- 18:47Speaker 1: around downs. It it's it was just ugly and and
- 18:52Speaker 1: it just I don't know, I don't know what to
- 18:54Speaker 1: tell you. It's it was mostly Sam just mission people do.
- 18:59Speaker 1: When you see some of these clips that people are posting,
- 19:03Speaker 1: and even in the game, when you're watching just normal
- 19:05Speaker 1: game tape and you can see guys open, that's not
- 19:08Speaker 1: a good sign. But when you see the refirst thing,
- 19:12Speaker 1: they're like, oh my god, there's two guys open. I
- 19:14Speaker 1: didn't even see that guy. It was just frustrating. It
- 19:18Speaker 1: should have been a game that came all the way
- 19:20Speaker 1: down to the wire. Last team at the ball type
- 19:24Speaker 1: thing and they're gonna win.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I think both teams kind of know that because
- 19:29Speaker 2: again we're at the end of the third. Now defense
- 19:31Speaker 2: is still holding this in seventeen points over three quarters.
- 19:34Speaker 2: To that offense is impressive. Place you got two turnovers,
- 19:39Speaker 2: could have been a safety, turnovers on downs, you're playing
- 19:43Speaker 2: well defensively. And then of course the floodgates start to
- 19:46Speaker 2: open in the fourth because what is the offense doing.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Like you said, you make a good drive, you miss
- 19:51Speaker 2: a field goal, you turn the ball over on downs,
- 19:54Speaker 2: you're just missing guys in the end zone. Sam's not
- 19:58Speaker 2: playing well. And then you know the double whammie is
- 20:02Speaker 2: you can't run the ball from the two yard line
- 20:04Speaker 2: because you shortyardage is just crap. You can't run the
- 20:07Speaker 2: ball in short yards. And I got Aaron Jones, cam
- 20:10Speaker 2: Akers a little bit bigger, but none of them are,
- 20:13Speaker 2: you know, great goal line guys. And of course, if
- 20:16Speaker 2: your offensive line is getting pushed, you don't necessarily need
- 20:19Speaker 2: to have a goal line guy. And that's just not
- 20:21Speaker 2: a strength of this offensive line. Is is is shortyardage
- 20:25Speaker 2: and goal line. You want to do a tush push
- 20:27Speaker 2: or whatever whatever you wanted to do, that's fine, but defensively,
- 20:31Speaker 2: you just can't put anything on I mean they almost
- 20:33Speaker 2: turn the game. Start the fourth VN Gigle drops what
- 20:37Speaker 2: usually he makes a play on that ball. You and
- 20:40Speaker 2: I both thought he just kind of got ahead of
- 20:42Speaker 2: himself and thought he was running before he cut the ball.
- 20:46Speaker 2: But he was there to, you know, drop what would
- 20:49Speaker 2: have been a pick six. I would have made it.
- 20:50Speaker 2: You know, twenty four looks like twenty four to sixteen,
- 20:55Speaker 2: and that was still a pretty good ball game. But
- 20:57Speaker 2: then you know, offense comes out, gets sack, puts forces,
- 21:00Speaker 2: you get a punt, and then Gibbs breaks another run and
- 21:03Speaker 2: the floodgates are opens thirty one to nine, and you
- 21:06Speaker 2: know that's what it ended, and everybody goes into prevent
- 21:09Speaker 2: and does their thing. But obviously, in those preceding three quarters,
- 21:14Speaker 2: if you could have got one touchdown, two touchdowns, made
- 21:17Speaker 2: a field goal here, you want to argue about the
- 21:20Speaker 2: turnover on downs with O'Connell trying to be aggressive in
- 21:23Speaker 2: the red zone, go ahead and make that argument. I
- 21:26Speaker 2: know where his head was at. I think you got
- 21:28Speaker 2: to get something in the head zone. You gotta try something.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Maybe that first one was just trying him trying to
- 21:33Speaker 2: be aggressive, but I really don't have that much of
- 21:35Speaker 2: a problem with it would have been nice to have
- 21:37Speaker 2: those field goals, but it's not. That's not the reason
- 21:40Speaker 2: you're missing guys in the end zone. You're missing plays. Now,
- 21:45Speaker 2: Jefferson can make some great catches, everybody knows that, but
- 21:48Speaker 2: you know, you throw it two feet up, it's just
- 21:50Speaker 2: not gonna it's just not gonna work. And then, like
- 21:53Speaker 2: you said, and I agree, which is even more alarming,
- 21:56Speaker 2: is if you can notice open guys running free on
- 21:59Speaker 2: the television broadcast without replay and you're telling him to throw.
- 22:05Speaker 2: It's just I mean one two stick out to me.
- 22:08Speaker 2: One is overthrow Jefferson in the back right corner where
- 22:13Speaker 2: you should have just kind of faded that ball in
- 22:15Speaker 2: and Jefferson would have caught it. And then Addison running
- 22:19Speaker 2: a streak toward the pylon and he missed that one too.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Now he wasn't under great pressure, but you know, any
- 22:27Speaker 2: one of those would have kept it a ballgame for longer.
- 22:30Speaker 2: And if you add up the summation of this game
- 22:33Speaker 2: and you say, make this play here, make that play here,
- 22:36Speaker 2: what it could have should all that stuff, it's win
- 22:39Speaker 2: You won that game. Now obviously didn't win that game.
- 22:41Speaker 2: In fact, you the score says, you got your ass kicked,
- 22:45Speaker 2: but we know it wasn't that. But man, it's just
- 22:49Speaker 2: really disappointing to see that at this point in the
- 22:51Speaker 2: season when you should be gearing up for a playoff running.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Had you played well, you know you'd have the week off. Nonetheless,
- 22:59Speaker 2: you got to take your hat off to the defense
- 23:01Speaker 2: that held us in there, man for three quarters, and
- 23:05Speaker 2: it just you can't ask. It's just asking too much, man,
- 23:08Speaker 2: to get them to win, to win a game like that,
- 23:12Speaker 2: and they tried. God it Ginkle gets that. I mean,
- 23:14Speaker 2: that's that's great. But you won the turnover battle, you
- 23:17Speaker 2: everything else that you wanted to do. You just your
- 23:19Speaker 2: quarterback you just freaked out, man, And you can see
- 23:22Speaker 2: his body language and even Koc's body Languge Jefferson tried to,
- 23:26Speaker 2: you know, give them a little pep talk on the sideline,
- 23:29Speaker 2: and I thought that was pretty cool because it wasn't
- 23:31Speaker 2: like arrogant or look at me. It was just like, hey, man,
- 23:34Speaker 2: you know, we got three more quarters to worry about it.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Just get the ball down, throw it to me. We'll
- 23:38Speaker 2: get it done. Just like Sam wasn't in the right
- 23:41Speaker 2: place head wise, and it just didn't work out. Man,
- 23:44Speaker 2: it's uh, it's shocking, but again we're Viking fans. And then, lastly,
- 23:50Speaker 2: before I turn it back over to use this kicking
- 23:51Speaker 2: situation is yeah, man, it's like, okay, what do we
- 23:58Speaker 2: gotta do? We draft these kickers? You know, they're great
- 24:02Speaker 2: kickers in college, have some really great kicks, and then
- 24:05Speaker 2: they fade out. I'm more mad at Will about the
- 24:08Speaker 2: kickout of bounds before the half than I am about
- 24:11Speaker 2: missed field goals because he'd give them three points in
- 24:13Speaker 2: that situation where he would have went to the half
- 24:15Speaker 2: seven to six instead of seven to ten. In the
- 24:19Speaker 2: long stretch of things, maybe that doesn't make a whole
- 24:22Speaker 2: hell of a lot of difference, but momentum wise, at
- 24:24Speaker 2: that point, it is like you can't give them three
- 24:26Speaker 2: points on a routine kickoff. It's just it's shocking what's
- 24:31Speaker 2: happened to Riikert lately. And all of us can sit
- 24:35Speaker 2: here and pick our brains trying to explain it. But
- 24:37Speaker 2: it's just a reoccurring thing with this franchise.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it really is, man, it really is. And you know,
- 24:44Speaker 1: we didn't get defensively, we didn't get as many hits
- 24:48Speaker 1: on the quarterback as we normally do. We did get
- 24:50Speaker 1: six seven tackles for loss, like we said, two picks,
- 24:54Speaker 1: they forced to turnover on downs. It played at a
- 24:58Speaker 1: very high level, let's say E league level, like you
- 25:01Speaker 1: said three quarters, and you know, combines the offense combined
- 25:07Speaker 1: six of sixteen on third and fourth downs. You know,
- 25:12Speaker 1: turnover on downs. Some of this red zone shit. Look
- 25:15Speaker 1: at this, This is opt to stats. Four times reaching
- 25:19Speaker 1: the reds So the Vikings four times reaching the red
- 25:22Speaker 1: zone but not scoring a TD, three times had a
- 25:24Speaker 1: goal to goal but not scoring a TD, two failed
- 25:28Speaker 1: fourth and go attempts at a missfield goal. No other
- 25:31Speaker 1: NFL team in the last thirty years has done all
- 25:34Speaker 1: that in the same game. Okay, so you have the
- 25:37Speaker 1: Vikings ran fourteen plays in the red zone in Week eighteen, right,
- 25:44Speaker 1: one of those one was successful. Minnesota seven seven point
- 25:48Speaker 1: one red zone success rate was the worst by any
- 25:51Speaker 1: team in a game in the last five seasons. And
- 25:54Speaker 1: someone followed up saying, there has been thirteen and twenty
- 25:57Speaker 1: eight games in the last five regular season and they
- 26:01Speaker 1: have the worst success rate in the red zone in
- 26:06Speaker 1: any game in that in that time. I mean, that's
- 26:09Speaker 1: how bad. I don't know. I don't know if people
- 26:11Speaker 1: understand just how bad. And I one agree with you
- 26:16Speaker 1: about they even brought the stat Well, they don't go
- 26:19Speaker 1: for it as much. And the kid you're playing the Lions, Okay,
- 26:22Speaker 1: you have to match them. You have to. Plus the
- 26:26Speaker 1: defense is playing good and you can get the ball back.
- 26:28Speaker 1: They got the ball back twice when that happened on
- 26:31Speaker 1: that Mattella's tip in the pick by pace and then
- 26:34Speaker 1: that deep bump. Both of those were after that. So
- 26:39Speaker 1: it's just it's hard to equate how bad he was playing.
- 26:43Speaker 1: And then the other stuff, like you said, the interior
- 26:46Speaker 1: line and all that, and you had Mackie tweeting Kirk
- 26:50Speaker 1: would have scored at least ten points by now. It's like, dude, dude,
- 26:53Speaker 1: Kirk's gone. He got benched in the last aren't you
- 26:57Speaker 1: happy at some point about what happened this season? Like, dude,
- 27:01Speaker 1: just leave it alone. What are you doing? It's just
- 27:04Speaker 1: so funny, dude, But yeah, man, I mean it just sucked.
- 27:10Speaker 1: There's really no other way around. At the game, we
- 27:13Speaker 1: should have been right in there and had the lead.
- 27:15Speaker 1: They would have came back a little bit, okay, and
- 27:17Speaker 1: then like I said, whether it's victory formation or a
- 27:21Speaker 1: field goal to win the game. I really felt like
- 27:23Speaker 1: it could have came down to that, but it did.
- 27:26Speaker 1: We got beat and it took a few weeks last
- 27:30Speaker 1: time Aaron for Sam to get his confidence back in
- 27:33Speaker 1: KOC to say fuck it, let's go and all we
- 27:39Speaker 1: documented this pretty well at Arizona Cardinals game when we
- 27:42Speaker 1: were down nineteen to six. We had no choice but
- 27:44Speaker 1: to say let's open this bitch up. And ever since then,
- 27:48Speaker 1: Sam is confident. You know, he did it, and he
- 27:51Speaker 1: proved he did something like that, and that was his
- 27:55Speaker 1: first fourth quarter comeback, not game winning drive, but or comeback,
- 28:01Speaker 1: because you can have a game winning drive when it's tied,
- 28:03Speaker 1: obviously so and it really sparked both of those two together,
- 28:07Speaker 1: him as a play caller and Sam as a as
- 28:11Speaker 1: a pastor obviously doing some shit that has been really impressive,
- 28:15Speaker 1: and we've been talking about it. You know, just because
- 28:18Speaker 1: we would say he is who he is, doesn't mean
- 28:21Speaker 1: we didn't think he wasn't having a great season. It's
- 28:24Speaker 1: just all the extra stuff that comes with winning. People
- 28:28Speaker 1: get blinded, and it's it's fine for fans for that
- 28:32Speaker 1: to happen. That's you're a fan and half these motherfuckers
- 28:35Speaker 1: are drunk or hi and include me into some of that.
- 28:39Speaker 1: But when it's media members, that's where it's like, all right, dude,
- 28:44Speaker 1: what are you doing? You know, it's just get it's
- 28:47Speaker 1: so unprofessional, and I get it it's Twitter, but come on, dude,
- 28:51Speaker 1: like some of the ship that they're saying, it's just
- 28:53Speaker 1: ridiculous and you think that they'd be happy at some point,
- 28:57Speaker 1: but I guess not. But yeah, I mean, and it
- 29:00Speaker 1: was just bad and it's not as bad though, just
- 29:04Speaker 1: to reiterate where we're talking about, it's not as bad
- 29:08Speaker 1: as that final score appeared. Like you mentioned, it's not
- 29:12Speaker 1: We're not just like blindly hopeful, but we're just saying, dude,
- 29:17Speaker 1: we could have had a lead, like a healthy lead,
- 29:20Speaker 1: so you never know what happens past that. So unless
- 29:24Speaker 1: you have anything else on this yr, you know, rough
- 29:28Speaker 1: loss in the fourth quarter, we can you know, at
- 29:31Speaker 1: some point move on to uh, Monday night, NFL dude,
- 29:34Speaker 1: Come on, guys, can you not have a game on
- 29:37Speaker 1: every fucking night of the week. You already took away
- 29:40Speaker 1: Thursday nights for college football Thanksgiving? You know, actually back
- 29:45Speaker 1: of the day was college football, but it's been that
- 29:48Speaker 1: way for a while. Cool, so they moved to Friday,
- 29:50Speaker 1: and you have games Friday like Saturday, Like, come on, guys,
- 29:54Speaker 1: why do we have a Monday night football playoff game? Sorry?
- 29:57Speaker 2: End of grand I agree with on that rant. And
- 30:01Speaker 2: I think it's been obvious, and it was obvious last night,
- 30:04Speaker 2: and it's been refreshing to kind of see over the interwebs.
- 30:08Speaker 2: You know, people are pretty much in agreement of what
- 30:11Speaker 2: happened last night, and Sam kind of melted down, and
- 30:14Speaker 2: that's just kind of how it was. I thought we're
- 30:17Speaker 2: not the only ones. In fact, even some Detroit fans
- 30:19Speaker 2: were like, man, if you guys would have had, you know,
- 30:21Speaker 2: some better quarterback play, it would have been a lot
- 30:23Speaker 2: closer and he possibly would have won. So that's good.
- 30:26Speaker 2: But yeah, let's put that to bed. I'm not even
- 30:28Speaker 2: sure offense wants to watch tape on that. I think
- 30:31Speaker 2: you just you just put that away one of those
- 30:34Speaker 2: things where we'll we'll move on and moving on at
- 30:37Speaker 2: the number five seed. Like you said, weird Monday night
- 30:41Speaker 2: game for the playoffs. It's just maybe we're not used
- 30:45Speaker 2: to it. Maybe we're used to the morning playoff morning
- 30:48Speaker 2: get up watch stuff, you know, it's gonna be nice,
- 30:50Speaker 2: get the games a nice succession. But now they go
- 30:52Speaker 2: and they have to get a money grab and go
- 30:55Speaker 2: on Monday night. So we're playing Monday night in Soulfi Stadium,
- 30:59Speaker 2: La Ram. They beat us last time it was the
- 31:02Speaker 2: infamous uh face mask no face mask? Would they have
- 31:07Speaker 2: a chance to win? And with you and blah blah blah,
- 31:11Speaker 2: it all matters bouncing back here? Uh you you mentioned
- 31:14Speaker 2: a little bit. Sam did a little bounce back start
- 31:17Speaker 2: with that Arizona game. And this is really what it
- 31:20Speaker 2: comes down to here. That was the missing ingredient last night.
- 31:25Speaker 2: If Sam can bounce back, get some fire in his
- 31:28Speaker 2: belly and you know, beat us Sam that he was
- 31:32Speaker 2: for that late stretch of the year. You stayd a
- 31:35Speaker 2: really good chance to win this game. Obviously they have
- 31:38Speaker 2: a good defensive line in LA that's a little concerning.
- 31:41Speaker 2: There are some concerns running the ball. Darren Jones uh
- 31:46Speaker 2: and Cam Akers and then obviously McVeigh and O'Connell will
- 31:51Speaker 2: just like to throw the ball around the yard and see,
- 31:52Speaker 2: look at this great pass I invented.
- 31:57Speaker 1: For seven years.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Should be this one?
- 31:59Speaker 1: You like that?
- 31:59Speaker 2: You know, it's really hard to talk about this game
- 32:04Speaker 2: because it's like, well, what Sam, Sam gonna go into
- 32:07Speaker 2: a shell or is he gonna, you know, bounce back
- 32:10Speaker 2: with some grit. I tend to lean on the grit thing.
- 32:13Speaker 2: I tend to think that he's gonna play a lot better.
- 32:17Speaker 2: We talked a little bit before we started the pot
- 32:19Speaker 2: about flushing this one down the toilet, and it's just
- 32:21Speaker 2: all bad. And maybe it's the best thing that could
- 32:24Speaker 2: happen to them, rather lose to Detroit regular season than
- 32:28Speaker 2: in the playoffs, that type of thing. But in order
- 32:32Speaker 2: to do that, you've got to get better quarterback play.
- 32:34Speaker 2: You've got to go down now on Monday and beat
- 32:37Speaker 2: a Rams team who's hot right now, playing really well
- 32:42Speaker 2: good defense. Obviously, Matt Stafford, you're not gonna get away
- 32:45Speaker 2: with blitzing him like we blitz other quarterbacks. So yeah,
- 32:49Speaker 2: it's it's a matchup that you know, there's a lot
- 32:53Speaker 2: of variables here, Chris, and mostly the biggest one I
- 32:57Speaker 2: think is the state of Sam Darnold's mind.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Yeah, that is a good point. And they are hot.
- 33:04Speaker 1: I mean six out of last seven. They lost to Philly,
- 33:11Speaker 1: they lost to Miami, but since that win, they had
- 33:16Speaker 1: a win right before but since that win, they got
- 33:18Speaker 1: all healthy. Remember that, just some time to play us.
- 33:22Speaker 1: I mean they beat Buffalo forty four to forty two.
- 33:25Speaker 1: They kind of done it in weird ways thirty to nine,
- 33:27Speaker 1: nineteen to nine, forty four to forty two, like they can.
- 33:31Speaker 1: You know, they they did lose their last game. But
- 33:35Speaker 1: you know, it is what it is. That Yeah, it's
- 33:39Speaker 1: it is gonna be tough. The line opened at two
- 33:42Speaker 1: and a half favoring the old Minnesota Vikings. It is
- 33:46Speaker 1: one and a half now. The over under is forty
- 33:50Speaker 1: seven point five and we didn't sustain a bunch of
- 33:55Speaker 1: injuries or anything like that. Jones did get back in it.
- 33:59Speaker 1: It seemed like he was doing when fine, and I'm
- 34:01Speaker 1: sure maybe it was just taking a Corter zone shot
- 34:03Speaker 1: or something. I don't know. You know, they were able
- 34:10Speaker 1: to run the ball enough, like it started out as
- 34:15Speaker 1: like it was just gonna be a shootout fourteen to fourteen.
- 34:18Speaker 1: We were up I think seventeen to fourteen at one point,
- 34:21Speaker 1: and there was just this stretch show it's tied up
- 34:23Speaker 1: fourteen fourteen, and we had a three and out punt,
- 34:26Speaker 1: three and out punt, had a field goal. We should
- 34:29Speaker 1: have scored a touchdown, another field goal. Should have scored
- 34:32Speaker 1: a touchdown at least one of those, maybe not both.
- 34:35Speaker 1: They get up twenty eight to twenty and we punt,
- 34:38Speaker 1: and then they punt, and then it goes down to
- 34:40Speaker 1: that safety thing, and you're all right, I mean, clear
- 34:43Speaker 1: as day, it was that it was it should you know,
- 34:45Speaker 1: it should have been a safety. Now we still obviously
- 34:49Speaker 1: you know, would have had to go eighty yards or
- 34:51Speaker 1: whatever and not just score a touchdown, but also get
- 34:55Speaker 1: the two point conversion, and then that just gets you overtime.
- 34:58Speaker 1: So some folks out there say, well that it came
- 35:01Speaker 1: all the way down to that, I'm like, well, I mean,
- 35:05Speaker 1: we had enough time to go down there and score.
- 35:07Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that they wouldn't have been able
- 35:10Speaker 1: to score, but you still did. That's just getting into overtime.
- 35:14Speaker 1: So it's not like, oh, we would have won the
- 35:15Speaker 1: game if it wasn't for that. I've seen a lot
- 35:18Speaker 1: of that. It's like, yeah, maybe maybe you just can't
- 35:21Speaker 1: give points though in two point conversions and overtime wins
- 35:25Speaker 1: off of that one little play as bullshit as it was, like,
- 35:29Speaker 1: I didn't see it and then you see, then you
- 35:31Speaker 1: see it and you're like, well, you're standing right there,
- 35:33Speaker 1: what were you looking at? You know, breaking down their numbers. Man,
- 35:40Speaker 1: their offense can be very hit or miss. It's not
- 35:46Speaker 1: this explosive juggernaut like it was a chunk of years ago.
- 35:51Speaker 1: But they obviously are very talented. Still, the biggest thing
- 35:55Speaker 1: that stands out to me is their defense gives up
- 35:59Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty yards a game. Okay, that's not great,
- 36:05Speaker 1: that's pretty mediocre. And so I really think that they
- 36:11Speaker 1: have to mix that pass, run, play, action, all that stuff,
- 36:15Speaker 1: maybe more like a Zimmer type of offense chaos. He's like,
- 36:20Speaker 1: don't you dare No. I think that plays into it
- 36:24Speaker 1: as well, where you're just like, hey, you know, we
- 36:27Speaker 1: gotta make sure we run because when we run it,
- 36:29Speaker 1: it has opened up a lot of stuff. And you know,
- 36:32Speaker 1: the first I'm not saying we didn't get any yards
- 36:35Speaker 1: the first time or anything like that. They did manage
- 36:38Speaker 1: to get over one hundred and seven, but that's on
- 36:41Speaker 1: thirty two carries because they got a little bit of
- 36:43Speaker 1: that lead and then they kind of stuck with it
- 36:46Speaker 1: and we weren't able to run successfully. And like you said,
- 36:51Speaker 1: if they're you know, we've said this before too. If
- 36:55Speaker 1: they are trying to like really take away the run,
- 36:59Speaker 1: then that's invited. You know, Okay, cool, fine, that that
- 37:02Speaker 1: means you're gonna have another safety come down or whatever.
- 37:05Speaker 1: You're gonna have one high safety. We can mess with that.
- 37:09Speaker 1: So you know, we need at least we gotta hit
- 37:13Speaker 1: their average one hundred and thirty yards. They give up
- 37:15Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty for a game. Let's try to
- 37:17Speaker 1: hit that. Let's try to hit that. If we get
- 37:20Speaker 1: it in there, I think that really helps. And if
- 37:23Speaker 1: you want to calm him down, like I understand, like
- 37:26Speaker 1: early in the game giving him easy throws, I get
- 37:30Speaker 1: that everyone was kind of staying that during the game,
- 37:32Speaker 1: but they a bunch of those thows were fairly easy. Dude.
- 37:36Speaker 1: For this isn't college dude. You know this isn't college football, man,
- 37:40Speaker 1: And for a guy. If you're talking about a guy
- 37:42Speaker 1: being an MVP, and if you look at his numbers,
- 37:44Speaker 1: they're they're really high level this year. But you can't
- 37:48Speaker 1: baby this shit. Either. There's no time to ease your
- 37:51Speaker 1: quarterback in or baby your quarterback in in the playoffs
- 37:56Speaker 1: and in these high level games, there just isn't. That's
- 37:59Speaker 1: not how you do it, dude. This is the professional football,
- 38:02Speaker 1: this is in college dude. So I understand with the
- 38:06Speaker 1: thought process of play action, getting in the flat, you know,
- 38:09Speaker 1: throwing something quick, get rid of the ball quicker, and
- 38:13Speaker 1: some of that is just a three step drop get
- 38:15Speaker 1: rid of it, you know, because obviously he does hold
- 38:17Speaker 1: the ball, so that's partly Sam's but if it's a
- 38:19Speaker 1: three step drop, you know he won't hold it as
- 38:23Speaker 1: much likely. But yeah, start out with some easier plays. Okay,
- 38:27Speaker 1: you know, something quick, get in space or whatever we
- 38:31Speaker 1: do have. You know, those wide receiver screens are kind
- 38:35Speaker 1: of funky with our wide receivers if I you know,
- 38:37Speaker 1: we mentioned the last few weeks Addison has gotten better
- 38:41Speaker 1: at blocking those. But you know, the the flip side
- 38:46Speaker 1: of that was Jefferson. Actually, they they ran a screen
- 38:49Speaker 1: to Addison, you know, a little quick, little out and
- 38:52Speaker 1: Jefferson missed the block. You know, he didn't. He couldn't.
- 38:55Speaker 1: He couldn't handle their their little guys. They're not big guys.
- 38:59Speaker 1: So that is the one one thing about this receiver
- 39:02Speaker 1: corps is blocking. And also, like blocking for a run
- 39:06Speaker 1: is even different than blocking for a wide receivers right
- 39:09Speaker 1: behind you. You know, and you see that in the
- 39:12Speaker 1: league a lot, and those are easy throws for the quarterback,
- 39:15Speaker 1: but are they effective? And that's that's kind of interesting
- 39:19Speaker 1: right there. So you know, I don't think Cock played
- 39:23Speaker 1: his best games? Do what best game? Last game?
- 39:26Speaker 2: Do?
- 39:26Speaker 1: I think he could have caught a couple. Sure. I
- 39:29Speaker 1: think Sam missed them a couple of times as well.
- 39:32Speaker 1: I think that, you know, sometimes you get away with
- 39:34Speaker 1: something as a defender, sometimes you don't. Usually in NFL
- 39:37Speaker 1: you don't as much. But I did think that their
- 39:40Speaker 1: captain of their you know, that linebacker. He he played great,
- 39:44Speaker 1: but he also was rough and he did hold arms
- 39:47Speaker 1: and shit and got away with it. But if you
- 39:49Speaker 1: get away with it, you get away with it. Is
- 39:50Speaker 1: what it is. But I think this will be another
- 39:54Speaker 1: type game I have it. Let me see where I right?
- 39:58Speaker 1: Do I have it right around like twenty three, twenty
- 40:01Speaker 1: seven to twenty three, something like that. I do think
- 40:05Speaker 1: we'll bounce back. I think having another look. I mean,
- 40:08Speaker 1: look what Floras did with another look at the Detroit
- 40:12Speaker 1: Lions through three quarters. You know, it's pretty fucking good.
- 40:18Speaker 1: I mean I even saw people I know that are
- 40:21Speaker 1: from Detroit that were like questioning Johnson. You know, it's like,
- 40:25Speaker 1: hold on, dude, like give Flora some credit, you know,
- 40:28Speaker 1: And that's why I want to give back third de
- 40:31Speaker 1: I can't remember his damn name right now, but the
- 40:32Speaker 1: third decordinator for the Lions, he had he called some
- 40:35Speaker 1: really good plitzes. But I have the Vikings getting the
- 40:39Speaker 1: job done. I do think they'll bounce back it maybe
- 40:43Speaker 1: just get it out of your system. But you know,
- 40:47Speaker 1: if we're gonna have, we're gonna have to make it.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Not if we're going we're gonna have to make a
- 40:53Speaker 1: decision on Sam. So what better way to I mean
- 40:58Speaker 1: talk about, you know, on the job experience. This is
- 41:00Speaker 1: the perfect time to see what he's got.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm there with you too. I'm gonna take it
- 41:08Speaker 2: a little more to the extreme. I think you're right
- 41:10Speaker 2: about the perfect time to see what Sam's got. But
- 41:13Speaker 2: I think it's gonna get more confusing because I think
- 41:15Speaker 2: the Vikings are gonna come out. I'm not gonna say blowout,
- 41:19Speaker 2: but it's gonna be convincing victory against the Rams. I
- 41:23Speaker 2: like what you said about running the ball. If you
- 41:24Speaker 2: can get those run yards around their average, that helps
- 41:27Speaker 2: out a lot. But I think Sam's got so much
- 41:30Speaker 2: on the line here and what he's done, you just
- 41:32Speaker 2: want to piss it away in one game. I think
- 41:34Speaker 2: he's gonna, you know, really come back in this game
- 41:39Speaker 2: and make a statement. Now, a lot of that's wishful thinking,
- 41:42Speaker 2: but also it's just kind of the way it goes,
- 41:44Speaker 2: because then it sets up another meeting with the Lions.
- 41:47Speaker 2: I'm sure the league will like that. Then you get
- 41:50Speaker 2: into the hard to beat a team three times, you know,
- 41:55Speaker 2: in that sense, a whole revenge thing. So I like
- 41:57Speaker 2: the vikings here. I think the vikings by ten thinks
- 42:01Speaker 2: by ten or more. I think the game's over late third.
- 42:06Speaker 2: I just I really think defensively they're embarrassed. They should
- 42:11Speaker 2: be embarrassed. I thought not defense. Don't get me wrong there.
- 42:14Speaker 2: I think the whole team is a little bit embarrassed.
- 42:16Speaker 2: I think defense is doing just fine. I like what
- 42:20Speaker 2: you're saying about about Flores with another look. Now McVeigh
- 42:27Speaker 2: is one of those guys who give him another look.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Yeah too, so, but I just think you know that
- 42:34Speaker 2: if you're gonna I really don't think it's gonna be
- 42:36Speaker 2: short passes, Chris. I think it's gonna be balls to
- 42:39Speaker 2: the wall live or die by the sword on this one.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Either they you know, they lose because they made a
- 42:48Speaker 2: bunch of long throws and they didn't work out, or yeah,
- 42:51Speaker 2: I just think they're gonna go with what got him there,
- 42:53Speaker 2: and that's what there and a Sam can relatively play
- 42:58Speaker 2: relatively well. Of course he holds the ball. We know that.
- 43:01Speaker 2: We've been saying that. Everybody knows Sam Daro holds the ball.
- 43:04Speaker 1: So he likes the ball. I guess he's got emotional
- 43:07Speaker 1: stuff to it. He doesn't want to he just you.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Know, it's just Bubba his little blanket to the ball.
- 43:12Speaker 2: But yeah, we have to uh yeah, I mean I
- 43:16Speaker 2: think that's the way it goes. Chris. I some people
- 43:19Speaker 2: say optimistic, but to me, I just gotta feel that
- 43:21Speaker 2: that's how it's going to go. So I say probably
- 43:23Speaker 2: Vikings twenty eight. I want to say fourteen thirteen for
- 43:28Speaker 2: the Rams. I think defensive performance, you know, like it
- 43:32Speaker 2: should have been last game. We'll just get hyped up
- 43:35Speaker 2: with offense actually you know, contributing this time, and it'll
- 43:40Speaker 2: just it'll be a powder keg thing where it's just
- 43:43Speaker 2: you know, then you start thinking, well, can they keep
- 43:44Speaker 2: this intensity for the next game and blah blah blah.
- 43:46Speaker 2: But I think that that's how it's going to go.
- 43:49Speaker 2: So I say, Vikings by by a wide margin. I
- 43:52Speaker 2: lost my ass on the over in this last one,
- 43:55Speaker 2: so I don't know, I.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Think most people did. Man, I didn't think it'd.
- 43:58Speaker 2: Be that yeah, I mean, I didn't think it'd be
- 44:01Speaker 2: so little. But then as a game approaching, like, man,
- 44:03Speaker 2: maybe you should the high over and blah blah bah.
- 44:05Speaker 2: But yeah, so take the Vikings on this one. I
- 44:08Speaker 2: think they win.
- 44:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and even about that quick little maybe just on
- 44:14Speaker 1: the first drive or whatever, you know, short stuff or whatever.
- 44:17Speaker 1: But I agree with the overall as the game plan.
- 44:19Speaker 1: You can't change it now. We're built a certain way.
- 44:22Speaker 1: We have a lot of success doing it. You gotta
- 44:25Speaker 1: do what you gotta do. And uh, yeah, we'll see,
- 44:30Speaker 1: we will see. Hopefully we were just a week to
- 44:33Speaker 1: early in that, you know, with that Green Bay game,
- 44:36Speaker 1: both of us thinking we're gonna lose it, and then
- 44:39Speaker 1: we both thought we were gonna win. So hopefully, you know,
- 44:41Speaker 1: he bounce back and you know, you get that's how
- 44:44Speaker 1: sports is. I know, PJ. Flex speaking of the Gophers,
- 44:47Speaker 1: doesn't believe you know, I think he believes in the momentum,
- 44:50Speaker 1: but he doesn't like to say he believes in the momentum.
- 44:53Speaker 1: And I kind of get that from a mentality of like, dude,
- 44:55Speaker 1: you could change it on this play. Who cares about
- 44:57Speaker 1: what just happened? I get that. But momentum exist, you know,
- 45:02Speaker 1: it just does. Now you can stop it, but you
- 45:05Speaker 1: need to make plays to stop it. But yeah, we'll see, man.
- 45:09Speaker 1: I think though, like you said, we will have a
- 45:12Speaker 1: lot of confidence that next week if we if we
- 45:14Speaker 1: get the dump, because we've already proven that we can
- 45:18Speaker 1: lose two in a row and then string off nine
- 45:20Speaker 1: in a row or whatever. So speaking of in a
- 45:24Speaker 1: row eight in a row, it is now for the Gophers,
- 45:29Speaker 1: and a lot of it obviously is with PJ. Flack
- 45:32Speaker 1: got the job done. And in fact, I didn't know
- 45:37Speaker 1: Daniel Jackson had like a little minor thing done to
- 45:41Speaker 1: his knee and he wasn't able to come back. So
- 45:45Speaker 1: there was a couple of things like that. We knew,
- 45:47Speaker 1: you know, I didn't think Cody was gonna play. We knew,
- 45:50Speaker 1: or say, wasn't gonna play, But there was actually more
- 45:54Speaker 1: players out than we thought, so it wasn't quite where
- 45:58Speaker 1: Virginia Tech was with literally like eleven starters or twelve starters,
- 46:01Speaker 1: but it was closer, way closer, I thought, once we
- 46:04Speaker 1: got there. So but it was nice to see, like
- 46:10Speaker 1: on that offensive line, only one guy has gone on
- 46:13Speaker 1: that one that played. Now, obviously we brought some folks
- 46:16Speaker 1: in and all that, but like it was, That's what
- 46:21Speaker 1: I like about, not just the fifteen bull practices to get,
- 46:23Speaker 1: but the actual game time that these young players get.
- 46:28Speaker 1: And you know, a guy like Hayes made some plays.
- 46:34Speaker 1: He freaking pancaked a ship out of some dude. Brockington
- 46:38Speaker 1: made some play, So there was some young defensive players
- 46:43Speaker 1: made some play. So it was nice to see some
- 46:46Speaker 1: some youngsters get in the game. It did kind of
- 46:50Speaker 1: take a while to get going. We freaking missed a
- 46:55Speaker 1: field goal that was very makeable, but we we kind
- 46:58Speaker 1: of stormed them at mid to late second quarter and
- 47:02Speaker 1: never really look back. It wasn't for a pick. You know,
- 47:08Speaker 1: we may have even been able to get a more
- 47:11Speaker 1: of a look at Drake Lindsay, the right now freshman
- 47:16Speaker 1: but will be the red shirt freshman next year who
- 47:18Speaker 1: there I believe hoping will win the job. But they
- 47:22Speaker 1: did bring in you know that George Tech QBA who
- 47:25Speaker 1: has more starts and experience of him, so they can
- 47:27Speaker 1: always go to him. Maybe it'll win the job, who knows.
- 47:30Speaker 1: But either way, you know, when you're two and three
- 47:34Speaker 1: and you win eight games, you win, you go six
- 47:37Speaker 1: and two or not six and two. But when you
- 47:42Speaker 1: when you're two and three, dude, it's it's rough. Dude.
- 47:45Speaker 1: After five games, it's like, oh my gosh. And so
- 47:50Speaker 1: I do like that. That's that's bigger than people think.
- 47:56Speaker 1: And we've said it before, like you know, eight and five,
- 48:02Speaker 1: eight wins. If you look at that two and three,
- 48:05Speaker 1: I mean that that is a lot. To go six
- 48:07Speaker 1: and two the last eight that that's huge. That's huge.
- 48:11Speaker 1: And you know, we all know the North Carolina game,
- 48:15Speaker 1: if not just the last field goal, but just one
- 48:18Speaker 1: of those field goals that he missed two of them
- 48:20Speaker 1: go in the Michigan thing, we know if we get
- 48:23Speaker 1: that call, there's a good chance we could win that game.
- 48:28Speaker 1: I'll never say we could have won that Iowa game,
- 48:30Speaker 1: just how that second half played out, you know, because
- 48:32Speaker 1: we got our ass kicked. And I don't think you
- 48:35Speaker 1: can just give give give all the time. Just like Rutgers,
- 48:37Speaker 1: our offense down the stretch not only didn't show up,
- 48:41Speaker 1: but then it fumbled and gave them great field position
- 48:44Speaker 1: to win that game. Defense showed up in that game, though,
- 48:47Speaker 1: So I'll give those are two losses. But then the
- 48:50Speaker 1: Penn State game to lose by one right there. If
- 48:55Speaker 1: you're ten and two and you beat Penn State, right there,
- 48:59Speaker 1: you're in the college football playoffs. Ten and two with
- 49:02Speaker 1: the top I think there were fifth or fourth when
- 49:04Speaker 1: we beat him, So we were so close to being
- 49:09Speaker 1: that team. And this also comes from, you know, last
- 49:15Speaker 1: year and being able to return starters and add to
- 49:17Speaker 1: the starters and so and some of the guys like Spencer,
- 49:21Speaker 1: who had the MVP in the game, he came on
- 49:24Speaker 1: really strong, man like he this year. He popped off
- 49:28Speaker 1: last year not as much. Taylor got a hundred yard
- 49:30Speaker 1: game and he threw a touchdown. That was nice to see.
- 49:33Speaker 1: But these next two years are really vital to try
- 49:37Speaker 1: to keep a guy like Taylor or try to keep
- 49:40Speaker 1: Koy Perrish. You know, you gotta show that you are
- 49:44Speaker 1: moving forward as well. And I'm not saying we gotta
- 49:46Speaker 1: be an eleven one team next year, but we gotta
- 49:49Speaker 1: be knocking at the door. You know, I think that
- 49:53Speaker 1: the floor has to be like eight wins, and you
- 49:57Speaker 1: gotta get pretty close to nine and ten, I believe,
- 50:00Speaker 1: and that could be a bowl game and all that
- 50:01Speaker 1: too with the with the ten wins or whatever. But
- 50:06Speaker 1: it does appear that they're going back to the full
- 50:10Speaker 1: on run game play action. I wouldn't be shocked if
- 50:15Speaker 1: the two leading reception leaders, like just the number of
- 50:19Speaker 1: receptions are the tight end and Taylor. I mean Taylor,
- 50:24Speaker 1: you know, set the record for running backs catches this
- 50:31Speaker 1: year and which has been around for a while. They
- 50:33Speaker 1: used to do all those things way back in the
- 50:34Speaker 1: day a lot too. And then you know, completions, the
- 50:39Speaker 1: number of completions. Max got that as well. So it's
- 50:44Speaker 1: it's interesting, man. We got we got two tough, really
- 50:47Speaker 1: tough games, but a good chunk of the schedule is doable,
- 50:52Speaker 1: you know. I do like how they have two more
- 50:56Speaker 1: gimme games to start the season and then go on
- 51:00Speaker 1: the road at Cal and then face Rutgers at home,
- 51:03Speaker 1: and so there's not like a heavy hitter there or
- 51:06Speaker 1: even on that Thurst night. You have to play like
- 51:08Speaker 1: a power for a team that's always kind of a
- 51:11Speaker 1: weirdest thing. So I think people kind of overlook just
- 51:19Speaker 1: how well PJ. Fleck is done, and it's in a
- 51:24Speaker 1: good spot. We're producing pros. In fact, I like that
- 51:28Speaker 1: we had multiple guys out in this game because it
- 51:31Speaker 1: tells you, you know, they're gonna try to go pro
- 51:33Speaker 1: and a couple of them are gonna make a team.
- 51:36Speaker 1: So yeah, overall, I'm happy where the program is. I
- 51:41Speaker 1: do think these next two years, though, are gonna mean
- 51:46Speaker 1: a lot, because if we can get even if we're
- 51:48Speaker 1: nine and three right next year during the regular season,
- 51:51Speaker 1: that next year we are not gonna be losing a
- 51:54Speaker 1: whole lot of starters, you know, as far as being
- 51:58Speaker 1: you know, to eligibility, so that would be huge. So
- 52:03Speaker 1: we'll see. But obviously just a good way to end
- 52:06Speaker 1: the season. And it really shouldn't be underestimated to think
- 52:11Speaker 1: that how close. I mean, nine to three and ten
- 52:14Speaker 1: and two were right there on the table. Like I said,
- 52:16Speaker 1: I'm not gonna go eleven and one and all that
- 52:18Speaker 1: type of shit, But it was it was a season
- 52:21Speaker 1: that we may look back at, let's say five to
- 52:25Speaker 1: eight years from now, and go, man, if Fleck could
- 52:27Speaker 1: have broke through that year, that helps everything. And I
- 52:31Speaker 1: hope that's not why we look back at it. But
- 52:34Speaker 1: I think he's done a hell of a job and
- 52:37Speaker 1: people just kind of forget how bad the program was.
- 52:41Speaker 1: And that's not taking any credit away from what Mason
- 52:44Speaker 1: did when he was here mostly an offensive running team.
- 52:48Speaker 1: His defenses got worse as the time went by, if
- 52:51Speaker 1: we're being honest, and then Kill deserves some credit, especially
- 52:57Speaker 1: for defense. We had a damn good defense and set
- 53:00Speaker 1: to Kill regime. Obviously, you know, we had to let
- 53:04Speaker 1: him go because of his health things. But Flet's doing
- 53:07Speaker 1: a pretty damn good job in.
- 53:10Speaker 2: Yeah, seven wins is your is your floor? Seven eight wins,
- 53:14Speaker 2: that's a far cry from what we grew up with.
- 53:17Speaker 2: And yeah, that progression from like you know, Mason to
- 53:21Speaker 2: Kill to Clay's and then and then Fleck. You know,
- 53:28Speaker 2: you could say it was gradual, but Fleck's really kind
- 53:30Speaker 2: of been that, I mean, kind of put you in
- 53:33Speaker 2: there and got you to respectability as a program. Again,
- 53:38Speaker 2: I'm sure the stadium had something to do with it.
- 53:40Speaker 2: You're not playing in that wretched dome, but you know
- 53:43Speaker 2: Kill had that as well. So yeah, I mean I
- 53:46Speaker 2: think it's a good season. Chris, Uh, you left a
- 53:50Speaker 2: little on the table, a little meat on the bone.
- 53:51Speaker 2: I think in Michigan, like you said that Rutgers situation
- 53:55Speaker 2: North Carolina, I mean, it's ten wins there, and then
- 53:58Speaker 2: you're looking at a different viewpoint. But you know, I
- 54:03Speaker 2: really thought the Rutgers was more of our bowling green
- 54:05Speaker 2: this year and that's gotta go away. But and you're
- 54:09Speaker 2: right about the Iowa where you just you know, I
- 54:12Speaker 2: would just kick your ass on the second half. What
- 54:14Speaker 2: are you? What are you gonna do? But the Michigan
- 54:17Speaker 2: thing was the thing. I mean, so I guess with
- 54:19Speaker 2: the state of the Big ten now the new teams,
- 54:21Speaker 2: how things are gonna start to even themselves out. I mean,
- 54:23Speaker 2: obviously Oregon, Ohio State, you know, they're gonna be blue
- 54:28Speaker 2: blood sort of in the Michigan will probably pop back
- 54:32Speaker 2: in there or they'll fade down one of the two.
- 54:35Speaker 2: But you're gonna have power teams. Ohio State will probably
- 54:38Speaker 2: be the constant one, and then you're gonna have you know,
- 54:41Speaker 2: Washington's a good squad. I mean there's a lot of
- 54:43Speaker 2: there's a lot of good squads now and I think.
- 54:45Speaker 1: They got a really good coach too.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and so in USC you know those guys will
- 54:50Speaker 2: get their ship together. U. C. L. A. Will probably
- 54:52Speaker 2: flash at times. So you know, if you gotta stay
- 54:56Speaker 2: competitive in that arena, now, you have to be able
- 55:01Speaker 2: to show progress. Like you said, to keep your guys
- 55:03Speaker 2: here mkoy. You know, maybe he's a guy that's going
- 55:06Speaker 2: to go four years, but Taylor, you know, I might
- 55:08Speaker 2: seek a different opportunity at some point if you're not
- 55:10Speaker 2: using him or winning games. I did see the Philip lindsay,
- 55:14Speaker 2: you know is what it is. I think you're right
- 55:16Speaker 2: about them going back to more of a run based scheme,
- 55:21Speaker 2: but you never know. I mean, you never know how
- 55:22Speaker 2: it's going to go. I know, with the backs they have,
- 55:25Speaker 2: I don't know what they've got exactly on that offensive line,
- 55:28Speaker 2: but you said everybody but one that you saw on
- 55:31Speaker 2: the bowl game, So I think offensive line is going
- 55:33Speaker 2: to be something that's always kind of steady in this
- 55:35Speaker 2: Some will be better than others, but they'll all be good.
- 55:40Speaker 2: So that's you know, that's bodes well for the offense.
- 55:43Speaker 2: I thought this was probably one of the weaker offensive
- 55:45Speaker 2: lines this season that I can remember. If you were
- 55:50Speaker 2: if you would have took the nineteen offensive line and
- 55:52Speaker 2: put it on this squad, they were talking about the
- 55:54Speaker 2: whole different thing. Defensive line is steadily improved, and that's
- 55:58Speaker 2: been the most gradual thing. I think the coordinators now
- 56:02Speaker 2: have kind of found their groove and what they want
- 56:04Speaker 2: to do, and so I think it's just kind of
- 56:07Speaker 2: full steam ahead. Uh, you know, are you going to
- 56:11Speaker 2: bounce into the college football playoff at some point? You
- 56:14Speaker 2: know you might get a lucky year, but you're gonna
- 56:16Speaker 2: be in the mix in the Big ten consistently with
- 56:19Speaker 2: Fleck it appears that way anyway, and you'll have a
- 56:24Speaker 2: respective program, you'll get on TV blah blah blah, all
- 56:27Speaker 2: that stuff, which is all stuff you need for the
- 56:30Speaker 2: nil for recruiting and all that stuff to keep your
- 56:33Speaker 2: program relevant. Obviously, beat Illinois this year, which was a
- 56:36Speaker 2: big thing which took so I think, yeah, long story short,
- 56:40Speaker 2: a good year. Wasn't great, but a good one and
- 56:44Speaker 2: could have been great. We need to have another great
- 56:47Speaker 2: again here soon. But you know the two and three
- 56:51Speaker 2: with Fleck in the beginning, you know, there's it's just
- 56:54Speaker 2: knee jerk, knee jerk on everything these days. And I
- 56:57Speaker 2: were talking about that earlier. It's just there's polarized. It's
- 57:00Speaker 2: either he socks or he's great. You know, there's no
- 57:02Speaker 2: pretty good coach. You know, he'll do none of that.
- 57:05Speaker 2: It's just you know, one or the other, and it's
- 57:07Speaker 2: getting frustrating. But yeah, I mean I'm happy with Fleck. Yeah,
- 57:13Speaker 2: way way it goes. I like the fact that they're
- 57:15Speaker 2: gonna run the ball because it's big ten. You're an
- 57:17Speaker 2: outdoor stadium, you gotta be able to run the ball.
- 57:19Speaker 2: I thought maybe they got away from it a little
- 57:21Speaker 2: more than I would have liked this year. But yeah,
- 57:24Speaker 2: you know, it was nice to see him fling the
- 57:25Speaker 2: ball around for once, you know, you know, so it
- 57:28Speaker 2: was refreshing to see that. So you guess you get
- 57:31Speaker 2: one or one or the other. But yeah, I mean,
- 57:34Speaker 2: I think it looks good in the future going forward.
- 57:37Speaker 2: So pretty happy with the state of the program under Fleck.
- 57:42Speaker 2: And again, you know the Michigan thing, that's the one
- 57:45Speaker 2: that sticks out the most to me is just the
- 57:47Speaker 2: on side kick as I came. You know, every year,
- 57:50Speaker 2: you're gonna get some of those and you're gonna miss
- 57:52Speaker 2: some of those, and that was when we missed it.
- 57:54Speaker 2: Woul him been huge. You get a win over Michigan.
- 57:58Speaker 1: Yeah, And you know, if you have a good line
- 58:02Speaker 1: of scrimmage, the game's gonna be pretty close, you know.
- 58:06Speaker 1: And the defensive line, like the three guys that really
- 58:12Speaker 1: stand out are not only pretty damn good, but they're
- 58:16Speaker 1: big too. You're talking like six six three ten six four.
- 58:23Speaker 1: The dude who's real versatil six six to eighty five
- 58:26Speaker 1: that could on the outside in inside. I mean, this
- 58:30Speaker 1: is the talent that we hadn't had prior on the defense.
- 58:34Speaker 1: And you know, we we took a minor step back
- 58:38Speaker 1: on defense last year. A lot of that had to
- 58:42Speaker 1: do with u who We lost our depth, and we
- 58:47Speaker 1: had some injuries and we didn't have experienced guys. And
- 58:50Speaker 1: this year we didn't lose those same guys and they
- 58:53Speaker 1: got the defense right back to where it was. So,
- 58:57Speaker 1: you know, I think they're gonna lean in based off
- 59:01Speaker 1: their transfer portals to the defense. Three offensive linemen, I
- 59:06Speaker 1: think they're definitely gonna lean into the run and kind
- 59:10Speaker 1: of get back to that and try to hit up,
- 59:12Speaker 1: you know, big plays. And I think that you know,
- 59:14Speaker 1: a guy like Brockington can make place. You know, the
- 59:18Speaker 1: guy I think it's Lacy who we brought in. He
- 59:21Speaker 1: might be able to make place. We got some young guys.
- 59:23Speaker 1: So we'll see, we'll see how that goes, but we'll obviously,
- 59:27Speaker 1: you know, talk that. You know, we're not gonna talk
- 59:30Speaker 1: too anymore stuff about the Gophers unless something happens with
- 59:33Speaker 1: the transfer portal or whatever. Why don't you get us
- 59:37Speaker 1: out of here, sir?
- 59:38Speaker 2: Well, it kind of felt like last week was the playoffs,
- 59:41Speaker 2: but these are real playoffs. You wan die, so fourteen
- 59:44Speaker 2: to three season, yippie. Let's go to the Sofi Stadium
- 59:48Speaker 2: play the Rams, bounce back, and we'll talk about it
- 59:50Speaker 2: next week.
