- 0:21Speaker 1: And welcome back to Truly Significant Presents. I'm Rick Tocchini.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We are celebrating....
- 0:50Speaker 2: Texas Wine Month with our owner of the Harlem Camp
- 0:58Speaker 2: Guest House in Comfort, Texas, and it's Krista Sowers. Krista,
- 1:03Speaker 2: welcome to our show.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Well, hello. Thank you for having me.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Nice to have you. I can't believe you have a
- 1:10Speaker 2: fire going in the background, which means that somebody is
- 1:15Speaker 2: having a crisp morning in the Hill Country.
- 1:18Speaker 3: It's so exciting. It's really great.
- 1:20Speaker 4: It actually sets the tone for October well, and now
- 1:23Speaker 4: we can be excited for everything else, including sitting outside.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Exactly. Tell us your backstory and how you got into
- 1:31Speaker 2: the hospitality industry.
- 1:34Speaker 4: By accident, by actually enjoying wine, which is since it's
- 1:37Speaker 4: wine month, we'll talk about that. My husband and I
- 1:40Speaker 4: live in San Antonio, and we've been coming to Comfort
- 1:44Speaker 4: I don't know, about five or six years now.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Um, and it's become such a magical place for us.
- 1:50Speaker 4: And we would often stay at this house, um, after
- 1:53Speaker 4: maybe sampling a few too many wines in this area, um,
- 1:57Speaker 4: and fell in love with the house and the town. And, uh,
- 2:01Speaker 4: there was an opportunity to purchase the house and I
- 2:04Speaker 4: don't know, it just happened. And now we're the owners
- 2:07Speaker 4: of this beautiful house and the keepers of it, uh,
- 2:11Speaker 4: So we've been having a really good time and enjoying it.
- 2:14Speaker 4: And we've actually, it has been called the Holocomp House
- 2:17Speaker 4: prior to us owning it. And now we are calling
- 2:20Speaker 4: it the 1906 House, spelled in the H-A-U-S German tradition.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Oh, I love that. 1906 House. You know how many people, Krista,
- 2:33Speaker 2: go out as couples to places like yours and they go,
- 2:39Speaker 2: could we own a place like this? And they have
- 2:43Speaker 2: this dream or some people call it wild dream. And
- 2:48Speaker 2: when you encounter people like that, what advice do you
- 2:51Speaker 2: give them in terms of what should they be thinking
- 2:55Speaker 2: through as they get into the hospitality and leisure industry?
- 3:00Speaker 4: Make sure you do it when you're not drinking wine. No,
- 3:02Speaker 4: I'm kidding. You know, if it's a place you're passionate about,
- 3:10Speaker 4: like for us, it's super easy.
- 3:12Speaker 3: We love comfort.
- 3:14Speaker 4: When we come here, I don't know if you're familiar
- 3:15Speaker 4: with the movie Brigadoon that takes place in the Scottish Highlands.
- 3:20Speaker 4: My husband and I call comfort our brigadoon. We come
- 3:23Speaker 4: here and it's magical. It's like it's a throwback and
- 3:26Speaker 4: it's just you instantly your blood pressure goes down. So
- 3:29Speaker 4: I feel like if you're very passionate about a place,
- 3:33Speaker 4: the rest is easy. You do everything you can to
- 3:35Speaker 4: keep the momentum going and make it successful. If you're
- 3:39Speaker 4: not real into the place or you kind of like it,
- 3:43Speaker 4: only part of the year or, you know, but if
- 3:45Speaker 4: you fall in love with a place, everything's easy.
- 3:47Speaker 3: It comes naturally.
- 3:49Speaker 2: That's right. There's so many things that have come together
- 3:53Speaker 2: in Comfort and Fredericksburg over the years that People don't
- 3:59Speaker 2: realize when they go out there to visit and you
- 4:02Speaker 2: probably just hit it on the head about your blood
- 4:07Speaker 2: pressure actually goes down. It does. You can leave the
- 4:13Speaker 2: city of Austin and San Antonio and get into the
- 4:15Speaker 2: hill country and something happens to you physically.
- 4:20Speaker 3: That's 100% true.
- 4:22Speaker 4: And people keep saying, are you going to retire there?
- 4:24Speaker 3: Well, maybe.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 3: It wouldn't be such a terrible place. It's wonderful.
- 4:29Speaker 4: You can walk everywhere. It's so friendly. It's got such
- 4:35Speaker 4: a rich history and the topography is gorgeous. You have
- 4:40Speaker 4: everything you need and then some, but you don't need
- 4:45Speaker 4: very much when you're out here.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So it's kind of nice.
- 4:48Speaker 2: It's really nice. And for as big as San Antonio
- 4:52Speaker 2: and Austin are now, people here in their fast lives
- 4:58Speaker 2: need an escape. So how do they find out about
- 5:01Speaker 2: what's the website that they go to, to book a
- 5:04Speaker 2: room two or three nights at your place? Because one
- 5:08Speaker 2: night's not enough.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Well, I agree.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Uh, I think when you get here, you need that,
- 5:14Speaker 4: that 24 hours just to decompress and then you can
- 5:16Speaker 4: go on your adventure.
- 5:17Speaker 3: So you need at least two nights.
- 5:19Speaker 4: I could stay a week and still not do everything
- 5:21Speaker 4: because you do get very relaxed. Um, And that's how
- 5:25Speaker 4: it should be. But you can find us on Airbnb
- 5:27Speaker 4: at the moment. And we plan to do fun events
- 5:30Speaker 4: in the future as well. I'm a classically trained chef
- 5:34Speaker 4: and my husband's a pilot. So he can't do much
- 5:38Speaker 4: of the piloting stuff here, but he can definitely talk
- 5:41Speaker 4: to about the wine country. But we hope to do
- 5:43Speaker 4: fun events and collaborations in the future here on the property.
- 5:47Speaker 4: But we definitely have three beautiful cabins that are surrounding
- 5:52Speaker 4: the pool and the hot tub. So you can relax
- 5:55Speaker 4: in the pool and hot tub. You can stay in
- 5:58Speaker 4: one of the cabins. You can stay and rent the
- 5:59Speaker 4: whole house or the whole property and have a big
- 6:01Speaker 4: reunion as many people do. Most of the people that
- 6:04Speaker 4: come here come from all over the world.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Actually, we've had.
- 6:07Speaker 4: People from Holland, the East Coast, the West Coast, and
- 6:11Speaker 4: they invite their cousins and people they haven't seen in
- 6:13Speaker 4: a while. And they just have a really good time.
- 6:15Speaker 4: And there's enough in town to do for people of
- 6:18Speaker 4: all ages. So everyone can do their things at their leisure.
- 6:23Speaker 4: And reconvene back at the house and have a big
- 6:26Speaker 4: dinner or barbecue or go to one of the many
- 6:28Speaker 4: restaurants or I don't know.
- 6:30Speaker 3: It's just a really, really cool thing.
- 6:34Speaker 2: You married a pilot. The pilot married a professional chef. Oh,
- 6:40Speaker 2: my gosh. What more do you people want to hear
- 6:44Speaker 2: other than that? Are you present most of the time
- 6:47Speaker 2: when your guests are there? It varies.
- 6:50Speaker 3: It depends.
- 6:52Speaker 4: For example, we have people coming this weekend, and I'll
- 6:55Speaker 4: be here. And I usually stay wherever there's room. If
- 6:58Speaker 4: someone's renting the main house, I have a cabin that
- 7:01Speaker 4: our family stays in in the back that we don't
- 7:04Speaker 4: rent out, that we can run the business from.
- 7:08Speaker 3: But most of the time I do, I try and
- 7:10Speaker 3: be here.
- 7:11Speaker 4: I can't always be here because if someone rents the
- 7:13Speaker 4: whole property, at least try and greet them and make
- 7:16Speaker 4: sure they're welcome and they know where everything is.
- 7:18Speaker 3: But yeah, it's kind of fun.
- 7:21Speaker 2: It's a lot of fun. The guests that are coming
- 7:26Speaker 2: up for this weekend for the Texas Wine Country, one
- 7:30Speaker 2: will be the keyboard player for the Truly Significant Band,
- 7:35Speaker 2: who happened to be a pilot in the Air Force. Oh, really?
- 7:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:39Speaker 2: And so I hope that your husband is there at
- 7:41Speaker 2: least part of the time to share notes. But what
- 7:45Speaker 2: people don't understand when you stay at a place like
- 7:48Speaker 2: your place, 1906, right?
- 7:50Speaker 3: That's what it's called.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Is that there's a conversation that takes place between you
- 7:57Speaker 2: and the other guest over breakfast and the camaraderie there.
- 8:03Speaker 2: That's part of the escape element from the busyness of
- 8:06Speaker 2: life is the the texture of the conversations are so rich,
- 8:11Speaker 2: much less getting to maybe have food from a professional chef.
- 8:15Speaker 4: Well, hopefully that'll be the case someday. Right now, I
- 8:18Speaker 4: do events for people or friends. Right now, it's Airbnb,
- 8:22Speaker 4: so the breakfast isn't included yet, but maybe in the future.
- 8:26Speaker 3: But it is, the.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Conversations, I mean, if we have guest date in one
- 8:30Speaker 4: of the cabins and another guest date in others, they
- 8:32Speaker 4: can meet by the pool, they can throw food on
- 8:35Speaker 4: the grill together and talk and connect and They're probably
- 8:38Speaker 4: here for the same reasons, either to hear great music
- 8:40Speaker 4: or have good wine or go on adventures.
- 8:43Speaker 3: So it's kind of cool.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Exactly. And speaking of wine, you're going to be back
- 8:50Speaker 2: on our live podcast on Saturday from Newsome's Vineyard. Yeah.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Tell me about how you got to know Nolan Newsome
- 8:59Speaker 2: and all the good people there.
- 9:01Speaker 4: I'm just getting to know Noel and he's a very
- 9:03Speaker 4: nice guy. And we like to support everyone in our
- 9:07Speaker 4: small community. And he's integral part of our wine community.
- 9:11Speaker 4: He grows some amazing grapes that, you know, a lot
- 9:15Speaker 4: of people don't know about until they get to comfort.
- 9:17Speaker 4: I think we have the best wines over here, even
- 9:21Speaker 4: compared to Fredericksburg. I hate to say it, but we
- 9:24Speaker 4: have award-winning wines over here. And once people find them out,
- 9:27Speaker 4: You know, they go, oh, yeah, this is good stuff.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And they start coming here more than they go to Fredericksburg.
- 9:34Speaker 3: That's true.
- 9:34Speaker 4: But we're really happy for people like Nolan in our community.
- 9:39Speaker 4: He is, like I said, very integral to the whole.
- 9:42Speaker 4: All of the vineyards use his grapes.
- 9:44Speaker 3: So he's very important to that community and to us.
- 9:50Speaker 2: He is. But when you combine what you and your
- 9:53Speaker 2: husband are doing with 1906 and Nolan.
- 9:57Speaker 2: At Newsome Vineyards and all the other things going on
- 9:59Speaker 2: there is a certain synergy and chemistry that is really
- 10:04Speaker 2: magical about comfort and we're looking forward to celebrating out
- 10:08Speaker 2: there on Saturday the 24th everybody come out and enjoy
- 10:12Speaker 2: it and you can meet Krista there how long will
- 10:15Speaker 2: you be there on Saturday a couple hours maybe.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Oh, I'll be in town. I'll be staying the night.
- 10:21Speaker 3: So I'll be hanging out.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Now that the weather's like fire weather, I will be
- 10:26Speaker 4: hanging out in comfort a lot more. And I'll be
- 10:30Speaker 4: joining you guys and, you know, hanging out at the
- 10:33Speaker 4: vineyards as well.
- 10:34Speaker 3: So I hope you can buy the house and check
- 10:36Speaker 3: it out.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Exactly. And give out your website one more time, and
- 10:40Speaker 2: then we'll look forward to seeing you on Saturday.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Sure.
- 10:43Speaker 3: We're the 1906 House. We're on Airbnb.
- 10:46Speaker 4: You can find us on the 1906 Estate, the 1906 House,
- 10:51Speaker 4: and each cabin is listed individually, but they're all under
- 10:54Speaker 4: the 1906 House.
- 10:56Speaker 3: So you'll find us there.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Fantastic. Well, we look forward to seeing you out there,
- 11:01Speaker 2: and thank you again for being a part of the
- 11:04Speaker 2: Texas podcast. wine month celebration and for being such a
- 11:10Speaker 2: gracious host of part of the truly significant band. And
- 11:16Speaker 2: we're going to look forward to talking to you again
- 11:18Speaker 2: on Saturday. And if your husband is there too, we
- 11:22Speaker 2: want to spend a few minutes with him talking about
- 11:24Speaker 2: flying because that's one of the, what we call side
- 11:29Speaker 2: quests that we're focusing on how people just kind of
- 11:32Speaker 2: lose themselves when they're flying. And you're in the zone.
- 11:37Speaker 3: He does do that.
- 11:38Speaker 4: He flies for Southwest. So he's, you know, his schedule's
- 11:41Speaker 4: revolving door, but hopefully he'll be here Saturday.
- 11:44Speaker 3: We'll see. Oh, fantastic.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Well, thank you so much for joining us. You're such
- 11:48Speaker 2: a wonderful host. The travel and leisure industry is lucky
- 11:53Speaker 2: to have you. And their place is a Christmas place
- 11:57Speaker 2: called 1906. Is there a telephone number you want to
- 12:01Speaker 2: give out with that as well? No.
- 12:03Speaker 4: I am working on that at the moment currently, but
- 12:06Speaker 4: they can certainly go on Airbnb and find us and
- 12:10Speaker 4: we'll have a website up soon too. Oh, also we're
- 12:13Speaker 4: on Instagram. We have an Instagram and a Facebook account.
- 12:15Speaker 4: You can definitely find us there.
- 12:17Speaker 2: You are advanced in social media. Way to go.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Trying.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Well, folks, join us out there on Saturday at Newsome
- 12:25Speaker 2: Vineyards and make sure and write to Krista's organization at
- 12:31Speaker 2: 1906 and Book one of those beautiful cabins and even
- 12:37Speaker 2: consider past Texas wine country. I'm telling you, when you
- 12:42Speaker 2: leave Austin or San Antonio, you're going to go into
- 12:44Speaker 2: a relaxation zone. Take advantage of it, people. Life's too short.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Hope you all have a great week. And thanks again, Krista,
- 12:53Speaker 2: for joining us.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Thank you. Have a wonderful day. We'll see you Saturday.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Okay. Be well.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Take care.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Big hearted Texans found across our state. Right is how
- 13:27Speaker 1: we're looking. Risk it is on our plate. Boots, it's
- 13:31Speaker 1: what we're wearing. Horses, yeah, we may ride. Farming is
- 13:36Speaker 1: so rewarding.
