- 0:31Speaker 1: do to encourage change. This episode is with Kelly o'coin.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I don't know if you know him. He's just on

- 1:17Speaker 1: What's up baby?
- 1:18Speaker 2: Another episode?
- 1:19Speaker 1: Another episode.
- 1:20Speaker 3: I just keep I keep waiting for a time order
- 1:22Speaker 3: to just put the plug on us and say you're
- 1:24Speaker 3: wasting our airspace.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Not you, not you. Yeah, no, because you.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Better recognize I'm sorry, queen. I have the best time
- 1:32Speaker 1: doing this podcast. It's the one thing I am doing
- 1:36Speaker 1: where I'm like, Wow, it's.
- 1:39Speaker 2: All about me, the one and I look at it.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I look at it differently. I look at it differently because.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I'm just fucking around.
- 1:50Speaker 2: You're not that's I am.
- 1:52Speaker 1: I'm I was really going to be more like sentimental
- 1:54Speaker 1: and say it's the one thing I do where I'm
- 1:56Speaker 1: like with my babe, we get to just banter that baby, and.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Tim, I want to ask you because you're a married
- 2:02Speaker 3: man and we're about to get married. La, Yes, this
- 2:05Speaker 3: is exactly what I was talking about, what you're doing.
- 2:07Speaker 3: This is what I'm bringing up. What I'm bringing up
- 2:09Speaker 3: is last night I was very upset and Lala now
- 2:12Speaker 3: has her phone to her face again, and we have
- 2:15Speaker 3: a new thing that we decide in our relationship that
- 2:18Speaker 3: after nine o'clock at night, we are gonna not have
- 2:21Speaker 3: phones and because one of us is always with the
- 2:24Speaker 3: phone stuck to us.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I was actually really into the way that you approached
- 2:27Speaker 1: it this morning, though.
- 2:28Speaker 2: How did I do it?
- 2:29Speaker 1: So he comes in from playing pickleball with his friends
- 2:31Speaker 1: and he was like, babe, can we talk? I just
- 2:34Speaker 1: would like us to not be so into our phones,
- 2:37Speaker 1: like it hurt my feelings. Last night, you were on
- 2:39Speaker 1: your phone until like midnight, and I was like, absolutely,
- 2:42Speaker 1: When should we decide to put our phones down? We
- 2:45Speaker 1: said nine thirty. Then I explained to him, yesterday I
- 2:48Speaker 1: got really caught up just in like just like really
- 2:51Speaker 1: exciting things. Pray yesterday, but give them la la beauty.
- 2:55Speaker 1: And I was just like obsessing over all of it.
- 2:59Speaker 1: So I and.
- 3:01Speaker 3: I appreciate that, and I like that we could just
- 3:03Speaker 3: talk to each other now and it's not always some
- 3:05Speaker 3: big drama. But I'm curious to do you guys face
- 3:08Speaker 3: phone issues or like if.
- 3:10Speaker 4: We've had this same conversation at least four or five times?
- 3:14Speaker 2: Really, but who's on the phone more you or your wife?
- 3:16Speaker 4: Probably me, but it goes back and forth.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Probably ten because his boss is Randall Emmett, so I
- 3:23Speaker 1: would assume too.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I don't screw with you at night. What's in a
- 3:25Speaker 2: blue moon?
- 3:26Speaker 3: I'm like, I need a script for rarely rarely rarely,
- 3:29Speaker 3: So it's just your wife is rides you and then
- 3:32Speaker 3: do you have a time to put the phone down?
- 3:33Speaker 4: Well, I mean we've I think we've said nine o'clock. Oh,
- 3:37Speaker 4: but we haven't. It's like we've instituted it and then
- 3:40Speaker 4: we forget about it. But we would both like that.
- 3:44Speaker 3: To be Can I tell you something I think us
- 3:46Speaker 3: going forward with a nine o'clock phone rule. I think
- 3:49Speaker 3: that you can't have sanity both going to sleep in
- 3:52Speaker 3: a healthy way and having a good connection if both
- 3:56Speaker 3: of you are glued to your phone, or even one
- 3:57Speaker 3: of you are is glued. And I take full response.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Really like last night, she was guilty, but I also
- 4:01Speaker 3: been guilty twenty times in a row. So this is
- 4:04Speaker 3: We're gonna really try this tonight.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Well, I've been okay with Randall being on the phone
- 4:09Speaker 1: a lot more lately because I have a dream backyard
- 4:12Speaker 1: that I would like and if being on the phone
- 4:15Speaker 1: makes more money, then have at it. You have.
- 4:19Speaker 2: You have been very supportive lately because I.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Think I need that cabana at the end of my pool.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Work work, work, Randal whips.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Okay, just slow her, fuck it down in a baby.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I love you, baby.
- 4:34Speaker 3: You look so happy today, smiling, and you've got no
- 4:36Speaker 3: bron as usual, and things are just lit up in
- 4:39Speaker 3: this room. But I'm just gonna let that go all right,
- 4:42Speaker 3: because it's a crime. What's going on here?
- 4:45Speaker 1: Okay, let's go to some boysmails.
- 4:47Speaker 2: That's probably a good idea.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Hilo on rand reflex. I'm a huge fan of paroles,
- 4:55Speaker 5: and my question for you guys is what excited for
- 5:01Speaker 5: when it comes to being married. What is the aspect
- 5:05Speaker 5: of being married that you're most excited for her? And also,
- 5:09Speaker 5: to the same end, what aspect of the wedding are
- 5:12Speaker 5: you most excited for? I know you guys are obviously
- 5:15Speaker 5: postponing things, but what are you most looking forward to
- 5:19Speaker 5: now that you've postponed? Really looking forward to hopefully hearing
- 5:23Speaker 5: most of this? Love you guys.
- 5:25Speaker 2: That's a good one. Most excited about the wedding and
- 5:27Speaker 2: most sad about being married?
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, The thing that I'm most excited about for
- 5:31Speaker 1: the wedding is the look on Rand's face when I
- 5:36Speaker 1: walk down the aisle in my dress. Let me say this,
- 5:39Speaker 1: Can I tell you when I had the designer make
- 5:41Speaker 1: my dress, I made sure I said I don't want
- 5:44Speaker 1: any of my tattoos showing a covered baby.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Well, now I'm really excited.
- 5:48Speaker 1: We're I'm going to be one classy bitch on that day.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Can I tell you, first of all, I'm not worried.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I'm joking.
- 5:54Speaker 3: I know that you take that wedding day very seriously
- 5:56Speaker 3: and you know that you only want to make me happy,
- 5:59Speaker 3: and that's what it's all about.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Boom boom.
- 6:02Speaker 3: So my so, my thing is, uh, it's definitely on
- 6:05Speaker 3: my wedding day. The thing that I'm going to be
- 6:07Speaker 3: most excited about is obviously seeing you come down the aisle.
- 6:09Speaker 3: That's gonna be a probably the highlight of the wedding.
- 6:12Speaker 3: And and then what about what else?
- 6:15Speaker 2: Was the question?
- 6:16Speaker 1: What about being married? My I'm most excited to make babies?
- 6:21Speaker 1: Ba boom boom.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I'm most excited about the process of making the baby.
- 6:25Speaker 1: All right, I get yead be fun.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I'm you know what I'm most excited about being married,
- 6:31Speaker 3: I swear is really we're already one, but it really
- 6:34Speaker 3: like just that it that it's like, I don't know,
- 6:37Speaker 3: it just feels it's like the highest level of becoming
- 6:41Speaker 3: one but also keeping our independence in our own you know,
- 6:45Speaker 3: supporting each other's independence, but being one.
- 6:48Speaker 1: That's kind of I love it. Okay, Next question, Hilla
- 6:52Speaker 1: and Randall.
- 6:53Speaker 6: This is Isabelle from Salt Lake City, Utah. I just
- 6:57Speaker 6: wanted to say I love your podcast. I love you
- 6:59Speaker 6: guys on vander Pump for My question is for Lala.
- 7:02Speaker 6: I grew up in Utah pretty much most of my life,
- 7:06Speaker 6: actually Saint George, Utah, where I graduated high school and
- 7:09Speaker 6: went to intermedia and middle school. And I was curious,
- 7:13Speaker 6: I know Laala grew up in Utah as well, and
- 7:16Speaker 6: I had a lot of bullying going on when I
- 7:19Speaker 6: was in high school, mostly because I was not a
- 7:22Speaker 6: member of the church, and my friends were really strict
- 7:26Speaker 6: members of the church and there was a lot of
- 7:28Speaker 6: pressure from them and their families to join them. So
- 7:32Speaker 6: it was kind of difficult for me to hold my
- 7:34Speaker 6: ground and be who I am as a person and
- 7:37Speaker 6: not become a member of the church and stick with
- 7:40Speaker 6: my ideals. I was wondering if Lalla, you had the
- 7:44Speaker 6: same issues or if you had a similar experience growing
- 7:47Speaker 6: up in high school, and how you dealt with that.
- 7:50Speaker 6: Keep doing what you're doing. Love you guys, bye.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Okay, Yeah, that is a good question.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I like that question. Yeah, I had the same issues.
- 7:58Speaker 1: That's why it's such an asshole because I had to
- 8:00Speaker 1: fight the bullies off with my words. I really did
- 8:05Speaker 1: you know, like I used to be really sweet. Oh,
- 8:07Speaker 1: just a sweet.
- 8:08Speaker 4: We're still so sweet. It's just like a little bite.
- 8:11Speaker 1: There's a bite. I didn't have that bite always. It's
- 8:14Speaker 1: only when these you know, little school yard kids got
- 8:17Speaker 1: a little too rough for the sandbox that I had
- 8:20Speaker 1: to like kind of fuck shit up a little bit. Yeah,
- 8:22Speaker 1: you know, since the time I was a little kid.
- 8:25Speaker 1: The thing is, though, is like my dad grew up
- 8:27Speaker 1: super Mormon, my mom was raised super Christian, and clearly
- 8:32Speaker 1: they both did not like that. So Easton and I
- 8:34Speaker 1: were just raised spiritual. But the crazy thing is in
- 8:37Speaker 1: Utahs if you're not a Mormon, a lot of parents
- 8:40Speaker 1: have a tough time letting their kids hang out with
- 8:43Speaker 1: kids that are not a part of the church.
- 8:46Speaker 4: That makes sense, Yeah, yeah, in my hometown there were
- 8:49Speaker 4: there was a pretty strong community of Mormons, and I
- 8:53Speaker 4: was really good friends with you. Where did you grow
- 8:55Speaker 4: up in a town called Rippon which is near Modesto. Okay,
- 9:00Speaker 4: I don't know if it was like a bigger Mormon
- 9:01Speaker 4: community than other places outside of Utah, but like I
- 9:05Speaker 4: happen to be friends with a big Mormon popular Like
- 9:08Speaker 4: a lot of my friends were Mormon and they were
- 9:10Speaker 4: all they were generally very very creative. So they were
- 9:14Speaker 4: in like the drama classes and band. I was in
- 9:17Speaker 4: marching band. Oh yeah, does that shock you.
- 9:20Speaker 2: A little bit?
- 9:21Speaker 1: Kind of? I do picture you inquire?
- 9:24Speaker 4: I was in choir. Yeah, I was in a barbershop quartet.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Oh, you have to give us pictures.
- 9:32Speaker 4: I'll look for some pictures for you.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Dude. Producer Tim is always just bringing in some like
- 9:38Speaker 1: new little things that I had no idea about.
- 9:40Speaker 4: A steel drum band.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Dude, you're so badass. Please Alex's faces like you're you're
- 9:46Speaker 1: teaching your best friend new things about you.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Though, in Utah it was different from Mormons and other
- 9:54Speaker 1: states because they're on their high horse, right, you know.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And it's like, wait a minute, you're like being so judgy,
- 9:59Speaker 1: but like the book Love says, don't be judgy.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Well, and it's like when you are kind of the population,
- 10:05Speaker 4: the people that are different, it's easier to kind of
- 10:09Speaker 4: make them feel different, even if you're not trying to, right.
- 10:13Speaker 4: And there's they're gonna be assholes whether you're Mormon or
- 10:15Speaker 4: not Mormon, you know what I mean. So there are
- 10:18Speaker 4: gonna be asshole Mormons who pick up on that one
- 10:21Speaker 4: thing that.
- 10:22Speaker 1: You know, what I remember about Mormons as they got
- 10:24Speaker 1: older in my high school, they love to like call
- 10:28Speaker 1: me a whore. That's like everyone's favorite thing is to
- 10:30Speaker 1: call me a whore. And it's like, please come up
- 10:32Speaker 1: with something different. And I because I dress like provocatively,
- 10:36Speaker 1: you know, like I was like, dude, this body ain't
- 10:39Speaker 1: gonna be like this forever. Like things are gonna start
- 10:41Speaker 1: sagging at some point. And these people, the woman, the
- 10:45Speaker 1: girl that's coming up and being like modest is hottest.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Lala is like giving bejs. So the whole football team
- 10:51Speaker 1: every Friday night. It's like, God, shut up. That's my experience. See,
- 10:57Speaker 1: that's why I got my boss can talk from it
- 11:00Speaker 1: at a young and there you go. I don't know,
- 11:03Speaker 1: fun fact all right, I love it. Those questions were fun.
- 11:06Speaker 1: We're gonna take a short break when Randall gets back.
- 11:10Speaker 1: We have the infamous Kelly o'coyinn who is on Billions
- 11:14Speaker 1: and I cannot wait to get him on the line.
- 11:17Speaker 1: We'll be right back. We are back, my beautiful people,
- 11:24Speaker 1: and we have a really fun guest. Today. We have
- 11:26Speaker 1: Kelly a Coin, who Randall is obsessed with what's up, cal,
- 11:32Speaker 1: How you doing, dude? We're good.
- 11:34Speaker 7: I love the pressure of real fun guests before we
- 11:37Speaker 7: even got started.
- 11:38Speaker 8: Thanks.
- 11:38Speaker 3: I gotta just tell you so, first of all, I'm
- 11:40Speaker 3: gonna blow your fucking ego up real quick. I am
- 11:42Speaker 3: the biggest Billions fan. I know you get that hourly.
- 11:46Speaker 3: I just have to tell you, Brian Koppleman, I blow
- 11:50Speaker 3: up on the GRAM when he goes live. I hit
- 11:53Speaker 3: him hard, like Brian, you're the man, and he's like
- 11:55Speaker 3: him and the what's the other creator's name?
- 11:57Speaker 8: His partner, David Levine.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Yeah, So they're like on a line together and I'm
- 12:01Speaker 3: blowing him up NonStop and he's like, he's like David,
- 12:03Speaker 3: we got Randall Levan.
- 12:04Speaker 2: He's this big place.
- 12:05Speaker 1: It makes so much sense now, Kelly, because he'll like
- 12:08Speaker 1: be on someone's live and he'll be like, I'm talking
- 12:11Speaker 1: to David Levine or Brian whatever Levine and I'm like
- 12:16Speaker 1: Avril and he's like, no, Billions, I'm like.
- 12:21Speaker 2: This guy is Avril Levine. That's the generation gap. That's
- 12:25Speaker 2: generation gap.
- 12:26Speaker 8: No.
- 12:26Speaker 3: But I just have to tell you, first of all,
- 12:28Speaker 3: not only is the writing on this show.
- 12:30Speaker 2: And I know you're.
- 12:31Speaker 3: A very, very prestigious theater actor. You start with Denzel Washington,
- 12:35Speaker 3: you're like the real fuck McCoy. So I give you
- 12:37Speaker 3: mad respect on all levels. But I want to say,
- 12:40Speaker 3: it's got to be refreshing to work on a show
- 12:42Speaker 3: that the actor bar is so high. The writing, so
- 12:46Speaker 3: I just want to hear your initial take, you know,
- 12:49Speaker 3: thoughts on that.
- 12:50Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I mean you've nailed it. I mean I've
- 12:51Speaker 7: been really lucky. The show I was doing before this,
- 12:55Speaker 7: and it overlapped a little bit, was The Americans, which
- 12:57Speaker 7: was another show that had an incredible actor is an
- 13:00Speaker 7: incredible writing. Billions is second to none as far as
- 13:05Speaker 7: I can tell, in terms of the right the writer's room,
- 13:09Speaker 7: which obviously is led by Brian and David uh and
- 13:12Speaker 7: then the quality of the of the regulars and the
- 13:14Speaker 7: guest stars that we get. I mean, people want to
- 13:16Speaker 7: be on the show, and I think they want to
- 13:18Speaker 7: be on the show because not only are they going
- 13:21Speaker 7: to get to say some really fucking fun, funny, dark,
- 13:25Speaker 7: weird shit, They're also going to like they're gonna be
- 13:28Speaker 7: working with people that they've seen.
- 13:30Speaker 8: Before and they want to play ball with.
- 13:31Speaker 7: There's so many actors that I just I'm like, I
- 13:33Speaker 7: can't believe I get to hang out with you for
- 13:35Speaker 7: a day because you're awesome.
- 13:37Speaker 8: You know.
- 13:37Speaker 3: It's so I mean even these even the small scenes, babe,
- 13:41Speaker 3: Like even the the little scenes off to the right,
- 13:43Speaker 3: Like those characters are so rich, they're so fun, they're
- 13:47Speaker 3: so well developed, and you don't see that in a
- 13:49Speaker 3: lot of TV, I mean, unless it's a high level Kelly.
- 13:52Speaker 1: He literally rewinds scenes four times.
- 13:56Speaker 7: To watch them through once at least and then go
- 14:01Speaker 7: back or Okay, but.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Let's be honest.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Let's be honest, Kelly. Season one and season two, that
- 14:06Speaker 3: season last scenes were the Mammont e epic David Mammont
- 14:12Speaker 3: moment you could you could ever see between those guys.
- 14:15Speaker 8: Yeah, they were, They were insane.
- 14:17Speaker 7: They always end well, they always and they always have
- 14:21Speaker 7: like late season they have a mid season episode that
- 14:25Speaker 7: sort of you know, the finale of which sort of
- 14:27Speaker 7: launches them in the second half of the season in
- 14:29Speaker 7: a different way, and then a couple of late late
- 14:32Speaker 7: season episode like I think it was season three with
- 14:34Speaker 7: the ice Juice Ice episode. My god, that wasn't even
- 14:38Speaker 7: a season finale, and it was that epic epic They
- 14:42Speaker 7: did fucking what you see Giamani's weeping and you turn
- 14:46Speaker 7: around and he is kind of because he's lost all
- 14:48Speaker 7: his money, but he's laughing because he won.
- 14:50Speaker 2: It's so sick.
- 14:51Speaker 1: It really is brilliant.
- 14:53Speaker 2: That's brilliant.
- 14:53Speaker 1: And the scenes that you show me, I'm like, okay,
- 14:56Speaker 1: I get it.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Okay. Wait.
- 14:57Speaker 3: I have a couple a couple of fan girl questions
- 15:00Speaker 3: myself because I'm still fan So, uh.
- 15:03Speaker 2: What's his name? The lead? Uh?
- 15:05Speaker 8: Damian Lewis?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Yes? Is he sorry? I'm overwhelmed? Is he nice guy? Fun?
- 15:11Speaker 1: Like?
- 15:12Speaker 3: Is he because he seems so fun that he's having
- 15:15Speaker 3: so much fun with the character.
- 15:16Speaker 2: What's he like?
- 15:16Speaker 8: He's a monster. He's a total monster.
- 15:20Speaker 7: And I've been sending out signals to people to fucking
- 15:23Speaker 7: save us, and they just keep ignoring us. He's the
- 15:29Speaker 7: He's the best. He and Giamatti and Maggie Siff and
- 15:34Speaker 7: David Costable who plays Wags like they're all just great
- 15:38Speaker 7: human people. And Chuck Senior Jeffrey Demand is a teddy bear.
- 15:43Speaker 8: He's a damn teddy bear. Everyone.
- 15:46Speaker 7: It's I've never seen a show where the level of
- 15:50Speaker 7: sweetness is in complete inverse proportion to the level of
- 15:55Speaker 7: malevolence and bile that they show on amazing.
- 15:59Speaker 3: It's a real family because we know a lot of
- 16:01Speaker 3: shows out there, they really are monsters. So it's great.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Have you guys, what are you? Are you in hiatus
- 16:09Speaker 3: right now? Did you shoot anything and then stop? And
- 16:11Speaker 3: what happened with the COVID with you guys?
- 16:14Speaker 7: Yeah, I can talk about it now because it's there's
- 16:16Speaker 7: been I think a month ago there was an official statement,
- 16:19Speaker 7: but we finished.
- 16:21Speaker 8: It's always a twelve episode season. We finished shooting seven.
- 16:24Speaker 7: We had just kind of dipped our toe into filming
- 16:27Speaker 7: episode eight, and then we called it. So we have
- 16:31Speaker 7: I don't know if they're in the can yet, but
- 16:32Speaker 7: we're gonna air apparently seven episodes and then when we can,
- 16:36Speaker 7: we're going to get back and finish.
- 16:37Speaker 8: The back five.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Oh wow, wow, I'm excited. So there will be more.
- 16:42Speaker 8: So, yeah, there's gonna be more. I think.
- 16:45Speaker 7: Oh, gee'z got we're almost halfway through this first part.
- 16:48Speaker 7: I know, Yes, it blows my mind.
- 16:51Speaker 2: It's an amazing Oh.
- 16:52Speaker 1: I remember when the first episode was up and Brandon
- 16:54Speaker 1: was like, Babe, we can't go to dinner tonight because
- 16:57Speaker 1: billion billion started.
- 16:59Speaker 3: I was like, bro, and I'm so mad that Brian Koppleman.
- 17:03Speaker 3: He needs to send me the friggin episode. This is
- 17:06Speaker 3: not there that I have to watch it weekly. It
- 17:09Speaker 3: is unacceptable and I am going to get him on
- 17:11Speaker 3: them today that I need these episodes.
- 17:14Speaker 8: Do you want to binge that you prefer to binge this?
- 17:17Speaker 7: Yes, I think, don't you see I'm I'm kind of
- 17:20Speaker 7: old school. I will binge ship, but I prefer if
- 17:24Speaker 7: it's a show I really like. I like the anticipation,
- 17:27Speaker 7: and one of the great things is the live tweeting.
- 17:30Speaker 8: Oh, I see the.
- 17:32Speaker 7: Episode ahead of time and I so, I mean, I
- 17:35Speaker 7: know the script obviously spent a few months. I see
- 17:37Speaker 7: the episode ahead of time and then I lie tweet
- 17:39Speaker 7: with people and it's a blast because the fans are
- 17:43Speaker 7: just billions.
- 17:43Speaker 8: Fans are smart, and.
- 17:44Speaker 7: They're funny, and they're passionate, and they show up every
- 17:48Speaker 7: week and it's like that kind of thing that you
- 17:50Speaker 7: missed when you do when you do the benching.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I think I agree with that. I just am so
- 17:55Speaker 2: on the verge because every every week it ends and
- 17:57Speaker 2: I'm like going to a depression. I'm like this show.
- 18:01Speaker 1: That's when he starts pulling up the videos like what
- 18:04Speaker 1: he did before we did this podcast, he.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Pulled up the videos.
- 18:10Speaker 2: And they take you into the room.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Oh my god, Randall is like a little fan girl
- 18:16Speaker 1: right now. It's so cute. So, Kelly, we have you
- 18:21Speaker 1: on the podcast thanks to Ben Mankowitz because he made
- 18:27Speaker 1: the connection.
- 18:28Speaker 8: Thank god.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Yeah, great dude. I was so intimidated when he was
- 18:33Speaker 1: on our podcast because he's brilliant. And then I'm looking
- 18:36Speaker 1: at your bio and well now I'm looking at your
- 18:43Speaker 1: bio and it's mind blowing that you and Ben have
- 18:46Speaker 1: something in common and you both come you're both movie
- 18:51Speaker 1: buffs and super into the arts, but you also come
- 18:56Speaker 1: from a line of politicians.
- 18:59Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, it's true.
- 19:02Speaker 1: So like I'm always curious, was there pressure for you
- 19:06Speaker 1: to like be that type of person or were you
- 19:09Speaker 1: always was it? Just like I love to be in
- 19:12Speaker 1: I love to act, I love the arts, and this
- 19:14Speaker 1: is the path I'm going to take.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Yeah, because your father being as successful as he was.
- 19:18Speaker 7: Yeah, he was a congressman, right and there's a I mean,
- 19:20Speaker 7: you guys can see it.
- 19:21Speaker 8: There's a picture of him over there over my shoulder. Yeah.
- 19:23Speaker 7: I love my dad, very proud of him. So yeah,
- 19:25Speaker 7: Ben and I went to high school together. He's one
- 19:28Speaker 7: of my best friends. You know, he's one of those
- 19:30Speaker 7: friends I actually really like. Yeah, one of those guys.
- 19:34Speaker 7: But yeah, so Frank Minkwitz, his father, you guys probably
- 19:38Speaker 7: talked about it, was involved in politics, Bobby Kennedy's press secretary.
- 19:42Speaker 7: He found he was the first head of the Peace
- 19:45Speaker 7: Corps down in South America.
- 19:46Speaker 8: All kinds of great stuff. And my dad was a
- 19:50Speaker 8: state representative.
- 19:50Speaker 7: For four years and then a in the US House
- 19:55Speaker 7: Representatives for eighteen years from nineteen.
- 19:58Speaker 8: Seventy four to ninety two.
- 19:59Speaker 7: So that was all through my you know, like grade school,
- 20:03Speaker 7: high school, and into actually into college. Yeah, I never
- 20:09Speaker 7: had any specific pressure from him to do it. We
- 20:12Speaker 7: were always an engaged activist family, progressive activism.
- 20:16Speaker 8: I mean, I.
- 20:17Speaker 7: Wouldn't hide that from anybody, because if you follow my
- 20:19Speaker 7: Twitter feed, I get into arguments all the time.
- 20:22Speaker 2: That's amazing. I gotta follow, I gotta follow.
- 20:26Speaker 8: But so I never had any but I never any
- 20:29Speaker 8: pressure from him.
- 20:30Speaker 7: He and my mom wanted us to study art, work hard,
- 20:34Speaker 7: whatever we were going to do, just work fucking hard.
- 20:37Speaker 7: And I had a long chunk of time when I
- 20:39Speaker 7: was less than I was lazy, and so he got
- 20:44Speaker 7: on me, and actually, I think that made me a
- 20:46Speaker 7: better actor because I you know, just instilling that work ethic.
- 20:50Speaker 8: And I think that one of the reasons why he
- 20:51Speaker 8: didn't freak out like a lot of.
- 20:52Speaker 7: Parents might about me being an actor is that one
- 20:56Speaker 7: of the main things parents worry about is job security.
- 20:59Speaker 7: But as a politician and a representative, he could be
- 21:02Speaker 7: putted out office every two years, so he didn't really
- 21:04Speaker 7: have any jazz, you know, living with doubt was a
- 21:07Speaker 7: little bit okay.
- 21:08Speaker 8: And then the performative aspects.
- 21:10Speaker 7: I don't know if you've noticed that politicians sometimes performers.
- 21:15Speaker 1: They're the best.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:19Speaker 7: So I got a lot of stuff from him, I'm sure,
- 21:21Speaker 7: and I've played politicians periodically, and I told him I
- 21:24Speaker 7: steal from him, you know, mercilessly. But but he's My
- 21:28Speaker 7: parents are very supportive.
- 21:29Speaker 8: That's great.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I love hearing that because I've I grew up around
- 21:35Speaker 1: the Huntsman family in Utah, and I just remember like
- 21:39Speaker 1: the men in the family were on the same paths
- 21:42Speaker 1: as their dad, as their grandfather, and so I love
- 21:46Speaker 1: hearing that. He was like, yeah, go and be be
- 21:49Speaker 1: an artist. So what was the what was your first
- 21:53Speaker 1: gig that you bucked.
- 21:54Speaker 8: I have to now professional gig.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Yes, professional gig.
- 21:58Speaker 7: Well, so after I left college, I had a Volkswagen
- 22:02Speaker 7: bus and no money really, and I drove around the
- 22:05Speaker 7: country with headshots propping off a resumes a different different
- 22:12Speaker 7: regional theaters and sleeping in the back of my bus
- 22:15Speaker 7: like I was sleeping.
- 22:16Speaker 8: I always tell people I slept.
- 22:17Speaker 7: In the parking lots of some of the finest hotels
- 22:19Speaker 7: in the country.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Oh my god, that's amazing.
- 22:23Speaker 7: But I ran out of money in Portland, Oregon, which
- 22:26Speaker 7: ironically was my hometown, and I crashed at my parents'
- 22:29Speaker 7: little one bedroom apartment that they had in Portland because
- 22:33Speaker 7: my dad was only there a little bit when he
- 22:34Speaker 7: was in town, I'd sleep on the couch and I
- 22:36Speaker 7: worked at a steel mill for a month to get
- 22:39Speaker 7: money to go to get back to DC.
- 22:40Speaker 8: And while I was there, I auditioned for a show.
- 22:43Speaker 7: And I got in and I think it was for
- 22:47Speaker 7: a couple months later, and the woman was like, Okay, look,
- 22:50Speaker 7: I want to hire you, but I don't know who
- 22:52Speaker 7: you are.
- 22:53Speaker 8: You don't live here, you just said you drove here.
- 22:55Speaker 7: I know I can find your father through his office,
- 22:59Speaker 7: but are you going to I'm back in three months
- 23:01Speaker 7: when this starts, and I said yes, and so she
- 23:02Speaker 7: took a.
- 23:03Speaker 8: Little risk, and that was my first professional.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Wait what was it? What was that show?
- 23:06Speaker 7: It with a play called A Lie of the Mind
- 23:09Speaker 7: by Sam Shepard and yeah, yeah, it was a crazy
- 23:14Speaker 7: good show. And then two years later I was down
- 23:16Speaker 7: at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and so that was my
- 23:18Speaker 7: and that's one of the greatest times in my life.
- 23:21Speaker 7: And that some of the first professional life theater I
- 23:23Speaker 7: ever saw was at the Orgon Shakespeare Festival, this beautiful
- 23:25Speaker 7: outdoor amphitheater and magical mountainee you know, rural, small town Oregon.
- 23:31Speaker 7: And so I was there for two years and then
- 23:34Speaker 7: and then moved on to la and to be with
- 23:36Speaker 7: my wife, et cetera.
- 23:37Speaker 8: But those were my.
- 23:38Speaker 2: First Did you meet your wife while you were in Oregon?
- 23:40Speaker 8: I met my wife at Oberlin College actually, so.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Oh wow, So you guys stayed together while you were Yeah, I.
- 23:47Speaker 8: Mean we had you know, we were like cool to
- 23:48Speaker 8: see what happens.
- 23:49Speaker 7: And she had two more years of school, so I
- 23:52Speaker 7: visited periodically. Uh, and she was from Los Angeles, so once,
- 23:57Speaker 7: you know, I was like when I was at Ashley
- 24:00Speaker 7: and finally she had just graduated and was in LA
- 24:02Speaker 7: and we spent two years commuting back and forth.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Wow.
- 24:05Speaker 3: So then so then when she graduated, you moved down
- 24:07Speaker 3: to LA. You had finished your Shakespeare run basically.
- 24:10Speaker 7: Yeah, I had, like there was a third season discussion
- 24:14Speaker 7: for me, but it was not like the first season.
- 24:16Speaker 7: I didn't do much of anything. Second season I had
- 24:18Speaker 7: a couple of really nice roles. Third season was going
- 24:20Speaker 7: to be just sort of not even stasis. It was
- 24:23Speaker 7: like a little bit less, and you know, you I
- 24:25Speaker 7: could I saw a path where I could have stayed
- 24:28Speaker 7: in this magical place, like really like in my brain
- 24:31Speaker 7: as a kid, that was the height of what acting
- 24:34Speaker 7: could and should.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Be your purest the purest form.
- 24:37Speaker 7: Yeah, and it really and it is just physically magical
- 24:40Speaker 7: if you google it and look at the pictures, it's
- 24:42Speaker 7: just overwhelmingly beautiful.
- 24:43Speaker 8: Summer theater, summer Shakespeare.
- 24:45Speaker 2: You know.
- 24:45Speaker 8: But I wanted to I.
- 24:47Speaker 7: Wanted to try myself against other things, and I didn't
- 24:49Speaker 7: want to regress. So I went down to LA to
- 24:51Speaker 7: be famous, and I didn't get a gig for a
- 24:53Speaker 7: year and a half.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Were going to that's actually not that long. We're going
- 24:57Speaker 1: to take a quick.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Break, but I want to hear. I want to hear that.
- 25:00Speaker 1: We'll be right back. Okay, we are back. Randall's spam girling.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Right, all right, I admitted that you don't need to
- 25:14Speaker 3: redo it.
- 25:15Speaker 2: I got it.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Right. We have Kelly o'coin and he has he's
- 25:21Speaker 1: spilling all the tea. And can I tell you I
- 25:24Speaker 1: love because see.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Kelly, this is the ship. I don't understand.
- 25:28Speaker 3: I thought, spilling the tea, we drop it on the ground.
- 25:31Speaker 3: This one with the spilling the tea, I can't.
- 25:33Speaker 8: It sounds like a British thing, it does, right.
- 25:37Speaker 1: What I love that we were just talking about is
- 25:40Speaker 1: how you started in the theater. And I find with
- 25:45Speaker 1: people my age that are in the industry, there's like
- 25:50Speaker 1: this this version of being an actor and in the arts,
- 25:55Speaker 1: but they try to get to that that point, because
- 26:00Speaker 1: what does that mean? When you're on TV. You become
- 26:02Speaker 1: a well known person. So you don't find many people
- 26:06Speaker 1: my age who are like I did Shakespeare, I was
- 26:10Speaker 1: in a play. So I die for the fact that, well,
- 26:14Speaker 1: that's why you're a phenomenal actor.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Anybody who starts in the theater is like, holy shit,
- 26:18Speaker 1: I could watch them all day.
- 26:19Speaker 3: I agree, so tall the wait, tell real quick. When
- 26:21Speaker 3: you came to LA, you struggle for your and aft
- 26:23Speaker 3: didn't get a job. What was the first job that
- 26:26Speaker 3: set it all off? And then we can get into
- 26:28Speaker 3: the epic work from there.
- 26:30Speaker 7: So what happened was my wife who was working as
- 26:35Speaker 7: a physical therapist ade and was sort of on track
- 26:37Speaker 7: to potentially become a physical therapist because she had run
- 26:40Speaker 7: track in school and she was.
- 26:44Speaker 8: Was a dancer and remains a dancer to this day.
- 26:48Speaker 7: Wow, she performed in LA and did some great work,
- 26:52Speaker 7: but sort of hit the ceiling. She didn't want to
- 26:55Speaker 7: do a date myself, but she wasn't into David Lee
- 26:57Speaker 7: Roth videos me the girl on the pole She actually
- 27:01Speaker 7: did right.
- 27:01Speaker 3: She was like a really trained, real dancer like I
- 27:04Speaker 3: grew up with in the arts.
- 27:07Speaker 8: And they are real.
- 27:07Speaker 7: I'm not saying they aren't real dancers, but the type
- 27:09Speaker 7: of dance that she was interested in, right, and and
- 27:14Speaker 7: but even some of the dancers in those videos were
- 27:17Speaker 7: but they weren't anyway, you know.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Yeah, they're not just l a modern or tap.
- 27:21Speaker 1: It was like we're saying that she's not shake your
- 27:27Speaker 1: ass is give them all with random all right, keep
- 27:31Speaker 1: going and so.
- 27:34Speaker 7: She decided to move to New York, which because she
- 27:36Speaker 7: wanted to try herself against the best. And she reminds
- 27:39Speaker 7: me constantly that I'm the one when we were in
- 27:41Speaker 7: college together that she was like, I'm gonna give dance
- 27:43Speaker 7: a year and I'm gonna go into my profession. And
- 27:45Speaker 7: as she said, apparently I sort of laughed and was like,
- 27:47Speaker 7: you're too good. You're gonna you should really give it
- 27:50Speaker 7: as long as you can. Don't give it a year's
- 27:53Speaker 7: she did, and that part of moving to New York
- 27:56Speaker 7: apparently was because of fully embracing that. I Yeah, she
- 28:00Speaker 7: came to New York, and it took like six months
- 28:03Speaker 7: of frustration, as it always does. But then she started
- 28:06Speaker 7: booking gigs, and she went to Europe a couple of
- 28:08Speaker 7: times to do to work, and then she started booking
- 28:11Speaker 7: gigs here in New York, and it was slower for me.
- 28:14Speaker 7: But after two years or so, I started getting things
- 28:18Speaker 7: that were that paid at least a little bit, you know,
- 28:21Speaker 7: early on, but I never and this is okay, So
- 28:24Speaker 7: this is where it sort of ties into what you're
- 28:26Speaker 7: talking about. Before I never gave a shit about being famous,
- 28:29Speaker 7: you know, and even now, like someone says I'm famous.
- 28:32Speaker 8: I'm like, no, I'm moderately known.
- 28:35Speaker 3: You know, I think, really well known at this point
- 28:37Speaker 3: you're on the biggest show on TV.
- 28:39Speaker 2: But well, yeah, okay, so.
- 28:41Speaker 8: I didn't give a shit about being famous. I didn't.
- 28:43Speaker 8: That's not what I wanted.
- 28:44Speaker 7: I just wanted to act. I loved acting, and I
- 28:46Speaker 7: was like, I can do this. I wanted to make
- 28:48Speaker 7: a living. I wanted to be able to eat, have
- 28:50Speaker 7: a place to live, and I have to live with
- 28:52Speaker 7: my parents and have to borrow from my parents and
- 28:55Speaker 7: maybe even help them when they're old, you know. But
- 28:59Speaker 7: that's that's what started to happen with theater. It was like,
- 29:03Speaker 7: all right, this is a very modest living that I
- 29:05Speaker 7: have now for like twelve years here, I didn't have
- 29:07Speaker 7: to do anything else though.
- 29:08Speaker 8: I didn't have to cater I didn't have to wait tables.
- 29:12Speaker 7: And I was happy and then all of it. And
- 29:15Speaker 7: that's why people go to New York rather than LA.
- 29:17Speaker 7: You know, we might want to do TV, but what
- 29:20Speaker 7: when it comes down to it, the one thing we
- 29:22Speaker 7: can't live without is theater, right and LA people say,
- 29:25Speaker 7: I mean, they could be great at theater and they
- 29:27Speaker 7: could love theater, but and this is of course gross terms.
- 29:30Speaker 7: It's not quite this the bipolar, but it comes the
- 29:33Speaker 7: conclusion that I want to focus on the screen. The
- 29:36Speaker 7: great thing that happened about ten years ago in New
- 29:38Speaker 7: York is screen came to us and we started getting
- 29:42Speaker 7: all these great cable shows that were doing like, you know,
- 29:45Speaker 7: twelve episodes, eight to twelve episodes, not twenty two to
- 29:49Speaker 7: twenty five.
- 29:50Speaker 8: So we actually were able to work on shows. The
- 29:53Speaker 8: benefit for us was we could work on shows.
- 29:54Speaker 7: For twelve months and then do theater, right, you have
- 29:57Speaker 7: to do six and six, I mean yeah, And for
- 29:59Speaker 7: them was great because their new faces, that the head
- 30:01Speaker 7: had not been overused.
- 30:03Speaker 2: And I want to say something about that.
- 30:04Speaker 3: You know New York I always say is like, you know,
- 30:06Speaker 3: actors like it makes you great and and and that's
- 30:09Speaker 3: the heart of acting in New York. And then you
- 30:12Speaker 3: come out to LA and obviously can make you famous.
- 30:14Speaker 3: But you're right now shows are shooting all over the
- 30:16Speaker 3: world that I think that that whole thing is broken
- 30:19Speaker 3: down with tax credits and and all that stuff. But
- 30:22Speaker 3: what what what was I to say? Oh, I I
- 30:27Speaker 3: relate to that because when I came out to LA,
- 30:29Speaker 3: all I want to do is produce movies. That was
- 30:30Speaker 3: my dream. I slept on people's couches. I didn't want
- 30:33Speaker 3: I didn't want to be like the big.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Movie for so.
- 30:36Speaker 3: I just wanted to be able to pay my bills
- 30:38Speaker 3: and be on the movie set. I didn't give a
- 30:40Speaker 3: ship you know about my name in lights as a producer,
- 30:44Speaker 3: any of that shit.
- 30:44Speaker 2: I just wanted to.
- 30:45Speaker 1: But then once he got a taste of it, Kelly
- 30:48Speaker 1: was like, a.
- 30:54Speaker 3: That's bullshit. I was Kelly for twenty years. I was
- 30:57Speaker 3: behind the scenes, and then this one dragged me out
- 30:59Speaker 3: of the shadow. So just remember that anyway, Okay, I
- 31:03Speaker 3: have a good I have a question that I just
- 31:04Speaker 3: think a lot of young actors and young artists coming
- 31:07Speaker 3: up want to hear from somebody who is successful. You know,
- 31:11Speaker 3: what do you recommend to young actors today if they
- 31:14Speaker 3: were graduating from college or graduating from high school?
- 31:17Speaker 2: And you know, like I grew up.
- 31:18Speaker 3: I went to Friming Arts High School where Udah Hogen
- 31:20Speaker 3: came and trained us, and and we studied high school
- 31:24Speaker 3: high school in Miami, New Old School there's we Uda
- 31:26Speaker 3: Hoggen came twice a year and Meisner and Meisner.
- 31:30Speaker 2: Was what we studied. At sixteen.
- 31:33Speaker 8: Yeah, that's crazy.
- 31:35Speaker 3: And my best friend from from an arts high school
- 31:38Speaker 3: was Katie Finneran, who won the Tony twice on Broadway.
- 31:41Speaker 2: So there you go, there you go.
- 31:42Speaker 8: So you've got some uh yeah, okay, you've got some peaks.
- 31:45Speaker 3: I love the theater and I'm such a big fan
- 31:47Speaker 3: of great actors, but I'm and I'm so removed at
- 31:50Speaker 3: that point. You know, from the heart of your craft,
- 31:53Speaker 3: what what do you recommend today? If somebody's just coming
- 31:57Speaker 3: out of Iowa and his passion, what do they do
- 32:01Speaker 3: and what do what do you think is the right steps?
- 32:03Speaker 7: I mean the business technologically and the business technically, everything
- 32:08Speaker 7: about it is so different from when I arrived in
- 32:11Speaker 7: New York. So it's hard for me sometimes to give
- 32:14Speaker 7: when I get this question, It's hard for me to
- 32:15Speaker 7: know what type of actual practical advice, which is what
- 32:18Speaker 7: I wanted at the time. I want to give me
- 32:20Speaker 7: a roadmap. I just how do I get in there?
- 32:23Speaker 7: And I guess the similarity would be that there is
- 32:27Speaker 7: no roadmap exactly the things I.
- 32:30Speaker 8: Think you need to do, and there was somebody else
- 32:32Speaker 8: I was just telling one of these things too. First
- 32:34Speaker 8: one though, is create a community as best as you can.
- 32:38Speaker 7: Be happy for them and support them and let them
- 32:40Speaker 7: help them rise, because you'll rise with them, or at
- 32:44Speaker 7: least it can give you hope.
- 32:45Speaker 8: That one of my own made it.
- 32:47Speaker 7: Try not to be jealous, be ambitious, but don't be
- 32:51Speaker 7: competitive as much as you can do that, and that's
- 32:53Speaker 7: we're all human, so we're all going to fail at that,
- 32:56Speaker 7: But strive for that as much as you can. And
- 32:58Speaker 7: sometimes pretending that you're not fucking jealous will actually make.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Me you're not jealous. I love it when I catch
- 33:05Speaker 1: myself getting super fucking someone's doing better than I am.
- 33:10Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my god, I'm so happy for you,
- 33:13Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, I'm like, wow, I feel
- 33:15Speaker 1: really good. I am happy for them.
- 33:18Speaker 3: On the opposite, I know, because she does get very
- 33:21Speaker 3: she gets in his zone.
- 33:22Speaker 2: But I you know, I I just get more competitive.
- 33:25Speaker 3: But I don't think I get jealous, like on a
- 33:28Speaker 3: kind of hater ade kind of level.
- 33:29Speaker 2: It's just like it's a kind of level.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 33:33Speaker 8: No.
- 33:33Speaker 2: But I think that advice is great.
- 33:34Speaker 3: I think that you're right, Like, like, thanks, babe, you
- 33:37Speaker 3: want to keep going.
- 33:37Speaker 2: You want to keep going today, You're in a today off.
- 33:43Speaker 2: I gotta I don't get to go home. You know
- 33:45Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 33:45Speaker 1: It's right here, this is Kelly. Can I tell you?
- 33:48Speaker 1: And I'm obviously in no way on a show like Billions.
- 33:52Speaker 1: I caved to reality Billions. No weird, right, I feel
- 33:57Speaker 1: like our script is written just as well. I'm just kidding,
- 34:01Speaker 1: but I.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Feel safety.
- 34:06Speaker 1: But I feel I feel the same way as when
- 34:08Speaker 1: people kind of ask for you know, they do want
- 34:11Speaker 1: a roadmap. I still look for a roadop and I
- 34:14Speaker 1: think that you gave perfect advice. It's like, take every opportunity,
- 34:19Speaker 1: compete with yourself and yourself only to do better. I
- 34:22Speaker 1: really love the advice that you just gave.
- 34:24Speaker 7: And really, if you're not, if you're looking to be famous,
- 34:26Speaker 7: then I can't help you because I have no fucking idea.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Agree you're looking to be famous, you need to be
- 34:33Speaker 1: crazy and get on a reality TV show, right or yeah, or.
- 34:39Speaker 8: Be incredibly I don't know, Instagram famous. Right.
- 34:42Speaker 3: Don't try to be an actor, right, you should not
- 34:44Speaker 3: be an actor if you want to be famous.
- 34:45Speaker 7: And there are ways, like, look, there are there are
- 34:48Speaker 7: are people on Billions, I mean people on Instagram.
- 34:51Speaker 8: Everything's Billions. It's like Malcolm.
- 34:54Speaker 7: Billions, billions, But there are people on Instagram who actually
- 34:58Speaker 7: figure out how to use that medium order to create
- 35:00Speaker 7: some fantastic content.
- 35:02Speaker 8: So do that if you know how to do that.
- 35:04Speaker 8: I'm old. I don't know how to do that.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Really.
- 35:06Speaker 7: I can tweet because I think I'm funny and I
- 35:08Speaker 7: can do things short, but Ben would quipple with me
- 35:11Speaker 7: being funny. But here's one other thing. And I said
- 35:16Speaker 7: this to somebody recently, but it's true. There was a
- 35:18Speaker 7: guy at the point at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, an
- 35:20Speaker 7: actor who spent some time in Hollywood and done he'd
- 35:23Speaker 7: done some he made some waves, but he chose to
- 35:25Speaker 7: be at the festival. But he said, you're gonna have,
- 35:29Speaker 7: you know, a bunch of people who say call me,
- 35:31Speaker 7: look me up, or come on buy when you get
- 35:34Speaker 7: down here. And he said, you say twenty people, do it,
- 35:37Speaker 7: eighteen of them you show up, they're gonna be like,
- 35:40Speaker 7: who are you?
- 35:41Speaker 1: Like?
- 35:41Speaker 8: What are you doing here? And you're gonna feel like
- 35:42Speaker 8: an asshole.
- 35:44Speaker 7: And if you let that feeling of feeling like an
- 35:47Speaker 7: asshole keep you once, you had to hit the first
- 35:49Speaker 7: three all.
- 35:50Speaker 8: Five, three, five of them whatever, They're all like, oh
- 35:52Speaker 8: my god, who are you, asshole? They're like, oh, I'm
- 35:54Speaker 8: an asshole. I'm not gonna I'm going to ignore the.
- 35:56Speaker 7: Rest of the fifteen, but then you can miss those
- 35:58Speaker 7: two people who actually will try to help you. Right,
- 36:01Speaker 7: So go through the eighteenth. All you have to do
- 36:04Speaker 7: is remember that you're not.
- 36:05Speaker 8: The asshole they are. Yes, it's hard, it's.
- 36:09Speaker 7: Hard to do, and it took me a while, but
- 36:11Speaker 7: I finally started following this guy's advice. And that's when
- 36:14Speaker 7: I actually met somebody, a casting person who was like,
- 36:17Speaker 7: I'm going to recommend it to this other casting person
- 36:19Speaker 7: and I started going in one.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Wow, and look at you now.
- 36:23Speaker 3: But I will say, I will say, our business, Kelly,
- 36:25Speaker 3: is very They just kind of like don't want to.
- 36:29Speaker 3: There are a lot of times where I find they
- 36:31Speaker 3: don't want to lift you up, they want to just
- 36:32Speaker 3: put you down. And I think you have to keep
- 36:34Speaker 3: that mentality. I've done it in all these years, where
- 36:37Speaker 3: you just got to know who you are, believe in yourself,
- 36:40Speaker 3: and you'll find those people that do support you, and
- 36:43Speaker 3: those are the people that matter.
- 36:44Speaker 8: I think that's right.
- 36:45Speaker 7: And actually, even those people who are the asshole, they
- 36:48Speaker 7: might not be assholes. They just might not really give
- 36:52Speaker 7: a shit about you, and maybe they're busy, maybe there's
- 36:54Speaker 7: all kinds of stuff going on. You just with them,
- 36:57Speaker 7: and you know, in the moment they might have met
- 36:59Speaker 7: it meant it right, but and it makes you feel
- 37:01Speaker 7: good to say, look.
- 37:02Speaker 8: Me up, I'm gonna help you out.
- 37:04Speaker 7: But then you have to do. The real good people
- 37:06Speaker 7: will be the ones who back.
- 37:08Speaker 1: It up, who back it up. But the best feeling
- 37:10Speaker 1: in the world I can imagine would be the people
- 37:13Speaker 1: that were assholes and then you kind of ignore them
- 37:15Speaker 1: and you blow the fuck up one day and then
- 37:17Speaker 1: they roll up on you and they're like, how have
- 37:19Speaker 1: you been. You're doing great. It's like, yeah, no, thanks
- 37:22Speaker 1: to you.
- 37:23Speaker 8: By the way, that sounds a little bit like you
- 37:26Speaker 8: might have some experience.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Am I actually puts it on TV, Kelly, it goes
- 37:30Speaker 2: a step further.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Okay, but Kelly, I I read that you have done
- 37:36Speaker 1: soap operas.
- 37:37Speaker 7: When I was first in New York, I think I
- 37:39Speaker 7: was on three but literally like two lines, five lines
- 37:45Speaker 7: something like that.
- 37:45Speaker 1: Okay, So reality TV now, which okay, I do, is
- 37:50Speaker 1: looked at as the modern day soap opera. I like
- 37:53Speaker 1: to say that's great, because I love soap opera so
- 37:56Speaker 1: perfect label it that. What was the difference being on
- 38:00Speaker 1: set on a soap opera and being on set on Billion?
- 38:07Speaker 1: I gotta know, I gotta loaded question.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Good luck, Kelly. Yeah, I think.
- 38:13Speaker 8: I think one of the big things was.
- 38:17Speaker 7: I had good experiences on the soap operas because it
- 38:20Speaker 7: was my first year in town. I'd just never been
- 38:22Speaker 7: on a set before, so for me, it was all
- 38:25Speaker 7: just new okay.
- 38:27Speaker 8: And there was one that I got.
- 38:28Speaker 7: That was supposed to be recurring, and there was kind
- 38:30Speaker 7: of a funny, sort of sexy little banster and I
- 38:32Speaker 7: was like, oh, cool, Yeah, that means that someone will
- 38:36Speaker 7: cast me maybe.
- 38:37Speaker 8: To be sexy guys.
- 38:39Speaker 7: Cool, you know at the beginning, any affirmation because you
- 38:42Speaker 7: don't know, like, am I weird looking?
- 38:44Speaker 8: Am I annoying? Am I interesting at all? Am I
- 38:47Speaker 8: potentially attractive? Whatever?
- 38:49Speaker 7: So those things were actually great about the soaps, I
- 38:52Speaker 7: didn't have nearly anything to do.
- 38:54Speaker 8: The biggest difference, if I look back on it, because.
- 38:56Speaker 7: There was a long break between those and then finally
- 39:00Speaker 7: getting to do more TV. Lack of rehearsal because they're
- 39:03Speaker 7: putting up an entire show every day, right, so it
- 39:06Speaker 7: would be lacking and even you know with TV, with
- 39:10Speaker 7: with episodics or you get two weeks even that The problem,
- 39:13Speaker 7: not problem, the difference from theater is lack of rehearsal.
- 39:17Speaker 2: So it really so quick.
- 39:19Speaker 7: It's so quick. It's so quick, and the extemporaneous stuff.
- 39:22Speaker 7: I mean, I look at soap actors now that I
- 39:24Speaker 7: used to accept for very few. I used to be like,
- 39:27Speaker 7: well they're kind of wooden. What's that about? And it's like, well,
- 39:30Speaker 7: you're fucking they're trying to remember that they have like
- 39:32Speaker 7: a three page monologue that they got ten minutes ago. Right,
- 39:36Speaker 7: look at them now with that in mind, and they're
- 39:38Speaker 7: fucking Olivier right right.
- 39:40Speaker 1: I love it.
- 39:41Speaker 3: Okay, real quick. We have our producer Tim here as well.
- 39:44Speaker 3: He's a fan of the show. Tim, would you like
- 39:46Speaker 3: to ask a question. I'm gonna give you a moment
- 39:48Speaker 3: because I know you're fangirling as well.
- 39:50Speaker 4: I am definitely fangirling Kelly. It's it's great to meet you.
- 39:53Speaker 2: All right. He doesn't do too he doesn't know you, no,
- 39:56Speaker 2: I know, Hey, be nice to Tim. Yeah, but I'm
- 39:59Speaker 2: the face that's the question on.
- 40:04Speaker 4: I read that. I think it was your dad that
- 40:08Speaker 4: said your career really started to take off once you
- 40:10Speaker 4: started shaving your head.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Oh my god, that's great. Yeah, he did.
- 40:19Speaker 8: My dad.
- 40:20Speaker 7: My dad has always been very supportive of it, as
- 40:23Speaker 7: I said, and he also is. He's he's long been
- 40:27Speaker 7: one of those guys in his various careers, even before politics,
- 40:30Speaker 7: that tries to figure out angles, not like in a
- 40:34Speaker 7: con man kind of way, but like a strategic sort
- 40:37Speaker 7: of way, like presentation.
- 40:38Speaker 8: He was a he was an ad man for a while,
- 40:40Speaker 8: you know that kind of stuff.
- 40:42Speaker 7: He Yeah, I think because I balded in a really
- 40:46Speaker 7: awkward way, not.
- 40:48Speaker 8: Like guys were just sort of thin.
- 40:49Speaker 7: My hair was thick, except in the back of my head,
- 40:52Speaker 7: where it was just gone, like the reverse what age.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Oh my god, Oh my god. I got to tell
- 40:59Speaker 2: my buddies to reverse Yamica. That's amazing.
- 41:01Speaker 8: It's like someone was golfing on the top of my
- 41:03Speaker 8: head and took out a divot. It was just gone.
- 41:05Speaker 3: I mean, Kelly, I guarantee you the name of this episode,
- 41:07Speaker 3: our producers of Time Warre are going to call it
- 41:09Speaker 3: the reverse Yamica.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Already. It's as good as a cats, It's as good.
- 41:13Speaker 8: As a Cats.
- 41:16Speaker 7: I was probably early thirties, early to mid thirties, and
- 41:18Speaker 7: I still had a baby face at that at that point,
- 41:21Speaker 7: so it was like this weird sort of thing.
- 41:24Speaker 8: It just wasn't working. It was easier for theater, but
- 41:27Speaker 8: I had some TV people say the same thing.
- 41:29Speaker 7: It's like, you probably should start buzzing his head or
- 41:31Speaker 7: get a piece, or get a transplant. I actually went
- 41:35Speaker 7: to one of those hair transplant places.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Yeah, just year, what year? How long ago?
- 41:40Speaker 8: Mid I was mid thirties.
- 41:41Speaker 7: I don't know, not the mid nineteen thirties, but I
- 41:44Speaker 7: was in my mid thirties.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's why they used some poke big holes
- 41:49Speaker 3: in your head. Yeah, yeah, you would have had the craters.
- 41:53Speaker 8: What he told me.
- 41:53Speaker 7: It never occurred to me though. It's like, well, no,
- 41:55Speaker 7: we'll do it here now. It was going to cost
- 41:57Speaker 7: me like ten fifteen thousand dollars, which I didn't even have.
- 42:01Speaker 7: But then you also continue to lose your hair around that,
- 42:04Speaker 7: you're gonna have a little island and then you're gonna
- 42:07Speaker 7: do it again.
- 42:10Speaker 8: And he used the word harvest.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Oh god, harve.
- 42:14Speaker 8: From the back of your head. And I'm like, this
- 42:16Speaker 8: is a Stephen King novel. I'm out of here.
- 42:18Speaker 1: That is so fucking gross. And then you just like
- 42:21Speaker 1: randomly become a chia pet.
- 42:23Speaker 2: What is that?
- 42:24Speaker 3: And by the way, if you look at people's transplants
- 42:26Speaker 3: from twenty years ago, it is like a whole punch
- 42:29Speaker 3: like you can check it out.
- 42:30Speaker 2: You could bury yourself into each follicy.
- 42:33Speaker 7: Still, okay, So I started shaving my I started shaving
- 42:36Speaker 7: my head and it was like that year that I
- 42:39Speaker 7: started just I don't know, there was something about my
- 42:41Speaker 7: face that evened out in people's perspective.
- 42:44Speaker 1: I guess I really dig the big head. I think, yeah,
- 42:49Speaker 1: I think you look great.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Oh, I think he looks great.
- 42:53Speaker 1: But I think you're right.
- 42:55Speaker 2: But I'm a fat Jew. Fat Jews can't have a
- 42:57Speaker 2: ball dead. I would, I would be dead.
- 42:59Speaker 3: It'd be humpy, dumb, dean steroids. Oh no, I would never.
- 43:03Speaker 3: I'll pay a million dollars to keep my hair before
- 43:05Speaker 3: I go bald.
- 43:06Speaker 2: It's never gonna happen.
- 43:08Speaker 1: No good, your hair.
- 43:09Speaker 3: Your chiseled and I and I've got like family underneath
- 43:12Speaker 3: my chin.
- 43:13Speaker 8: So you're a handsome son of a bit.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Oh that was cute. I love that fun Kelly Kelly
- 43:19Speaker 1: quick question.
- 43:20Speaker 2: I don't want to run out of time.
- 43:21Speaker 3: You work with Peter Burg, which I financed and produced
- 43:24Speaker 3: Loan Survivor The king.
- 43:26Speaker 2: How, Yes, Yes, I did.
- 43:28Speaker 8: You did The Kingdom?
- 43:29Speaker 2: No, I did? I did Loan Survivor. You did The Kingdom?
- 43:31Speaker 2: I did? Yeah?
- 43:32Speaker 8: Okay, yeah, yeah, because you think I would.
- 43:34Speaker 2: I would have seen you, Kelly, I would have seen you.
- 43:36Speaker 3: Okay, but tell me tell me that experience and and Spielberg,
- 43:39Speaker 3: tell me those two.
- 43:41Speaker 7: It was fantastic. It was on location and I love
- 43:44Speaker 7: I always love going away. I love hotels. I love
- 43:46Speaker 7: being on locations.
- 43:46Speaker 8: Like love it. Uh yeah.
- 43:49Speaker 7: And I got to take a van like forty five
- 43:52Speaker 7: minutes or a half hour or something to set and
- 43:55Speaker 7: back every day with Anna Devere Smith and Richard Jenkins,
- 43:59Speaker 7: and there was one it was just Richard Jenkins.
- 44:01Speaker 8: And I am such a huge fan of both of those.
- 44:03Speaker 7: Anna Deavere Smith is a theater god and Richard Jenkins,
- 44:07Speaker 7: I'm sure has done tons of theater, but but he's
- 44:10Speaker 7: a TV movie guy.
- 44:11Speaker 2: The greatest, the greatest.
- 44:12Speaker 8: I got to hang out with these guys and.
- 44:15Speaker 2: For an hour every day, for an hour every day.
- 44:17Speaker 7: For an hour every day, and the last time, the
- 44:19Speaker 7: last half hour ride after we were done shooting a
- 44:21Speaker 7: day early, which was a bummer to me.
- 44:24Speaker 8: I'm sure Peter Berg loved it.
- 44:26Speaker 3: He's fast, by the way, on Los Rivory finished five
- 44:28Speaker 3: days early, five days.
- 44:29Speaker 8: That's incredible. He was fast, and he was great.
- 44:31Speaker 7: He would throw lines to you and everything, and he
- 44:34Speaker 7: had Jamie Fox and me like up in each other's face.
- 44:36Speaker 8: Was like playing with Jamie FOXX.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:39Speaker 8: Awesome.
- 44:40Speaker 7: But so on the ride home, Jenkins was like, hey,
- 44:44Speaker 7: let's get a drink at the hotel afterwards, and I
- 44:47Speaker 7: was like, great, yeah, I just have to call my
- 44:48Speaker 7: wife and I meet you in half an hour.
- 44:51Speaker 8: And so I called my wife and she was like,
- 44:52Speaker 8: up in the room, she said, what are you doing?
- 44:54Speaker 8: Is Richard Jenkins? Go down, I have a drink with him.
- 44:56Speaker 8: He's like my favorite actor in the world. Go tell
- 44:58Speaker 8: him that your your wife loves him.
- 45:00Speaker 7: So I went down and he didn't show up because
- 45:02Speaker 7: I think I misspoke. I think he thought that I
- 45:06Speaker 7: was saying.
- 45:07Speaker 8: I can I have like half an hour? Then I
- 45:08Speaker 8: got to call my wife. Oh, so I didn't get
- 45:11Speaker 8: to have my drink with this.
- 45:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 45:13Speaker 8: And he's like one of my favorite actors in the world.
- 45:15Speaker 8: And we liked each other and he liked.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Me, but he doesn't like, I bet he doesn't talk
- 45:20Speaker 2: to you anymore.
- 45:21Speaker 8: Yeah, I bet he didn't. Like.
- 45:21Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm sure he remembers that guy who stood him
- 45:24Speaker 7: up in the Arizona Hotel.
- 45:26Speaker 8: He's the guy in that minor role.
- 45:28Speaker 3: So I'm just talking because we're both been sitting on
- 45:31Speaker 3: the bench now for the last two months with COVID.
- 45:33Speaker 3: Just to update you, there was an article that I
- 45:35Speaker 3: just had come out in Deadline that I did where
- 45:37Speaker 3: I was directing my first movie in Puerto Rico with
- 45:40Speaker 3: Megan Fox and Bruce Willis and Emel Hurst all these people,
- 45:43Speaker 3: and we got shut down. We are doing our final
- 45:47Speaker 3: UH interview next week with SAG, which were optimistic that
- 45:51Speaker 3: they hopefully will sign off and then we can go
- 45:55Speaker 3: back to work in the IA, which we also need
- 45:57Speaker 3: their protocols. They're saying around June first they're going to
- 46:00Speaker 3: release their so hopefully hopefully in June between the both unions,
- 46:05Speaker 3: they are encouraging all of us safely of course, to
- 46:08Speaker 3: go back to work, so not gun Wood. Also, I
- 46:10Speaker 3: told you no fucking around. I'm sending you a script
- 46:13Speaker 3: today because I need you in my movies.
- 46:15Speaker 2: You're just talking.
- 46:16Speaker 8: Would you'd make my day?
- 46:18Speaker 1: Just wheeling and dealing. That's what we do here. We
- 46:22Speaker 1: picked the brain and then we give movie roles.
- 46:25Speaker 8: That's good luck. I hope that works out.
- 46:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm really OPTI by the way, I'm optimistic, and
- 46:29Speaker 3: I said for the whole industry, because you know, our industry, theater, film, television,
- 46:33Speaker 3: whatever it is, is dying.
- 46:35Speaker 2: We've all been you know. You know it's brutal.
- 46:37Speaker 3: I mean, it's brutal for people that I know, you know,
- 46:40Speaker 3: our working paycheck to paycheck, and I just want us
- 46:43Speaker 3: to go back to work so that we can you know,
- 46:45Speaker 3: as a community, we work. We're artists, and we don't
- 46:48Speaker 3: do well not creating. And I know we've done the
- 46:51Speaker 3: best we can with with where we are, but we
- 46:54Speaker 3: just we all want to go back to work.
- 46:55Speaker 8: So and most of us, yeah, and most of us
- 46:57Speaker 8: are workaholics. Yeah. People look at creatives, I hate that term.
- 47:02Speaker 8: It sounds pretentious, but they look at creatives as sort
- 47:04Speaker 8: of like like lazy and lucie, and it's like, no,
- 47:07Speaker 8: we just want to work. It's the opposite, the opposite,
- 47:10Speaker 8: the opposite.
- 47:10Speaker 3: And I agree, and I think that all artists right now,
- 47:12Speaker 3: whether you're a filmmaker or actor or whatever. We're just
- 47:15Speaker 3: all we want to do is we want to be safe,
- 47:17Speaker 3: but we want to go back to work. So I'm
- 47:19Speaker 3: optimistic for us all.
- 47:20Speaker 1: I had the best time having you on today.
