- 0:02Speaker 1: Chapter eighteen. The children of Jared were in the habit
- 0:06Speaker 1: of visiting him hour after hour to receive his blessing
- 0:09Speaker 1: and to ask his advice for everything they did, and
- 0:12Speaker 1: when he had work to do, they did it for him.
- 0:15Speaker 1: But this time when they went into the cave, they
- 0:17Speaker 1: did not find Jared. But they found the lamp put out,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and the bodies of the fathers thrown about, And voices
- 0:23Speaker 1: came from them by the power of God, that said, Satan,
- 0:27Speaker 1: in an apparition, has deceived our son, wishing to destroy
- 0:30Speaker 1: him as he destroyed our son kin. They also said, Lord,
- 0:34Speaker 1: God of Heaven and Earth, deliver our son from the
- 0:37Speaker 1: hand of Satan, who produced such a great and false
- 0:39Speaker 1: specter before him. They also spoke of other matters by
- 0:43Speaker 1: the power of God. But when the children of Jared
- 0:45Speaker 1: heard these voices, they feared and stood weeping for their
- 0:48Speaker 1: father because they did not know what had happened to him.
- 0:51Speaker 1: And they wept for him that day until the setting
- 0:52Speaker 1: of the sun. Then Jared come with a mournful expression,
- 0:56Speaker 1: miserable in mind and body, and sorrowful at having been
- 0:59Speaker 1: separated from the boy his father's. But as he came
- 1:01Speaker 1: near the cave, his children saw him and ran to
- 1:04Speaker 1: the cave and hugged his neck, crying and saying to him, Oh, Father,
- 1:09Speaker 1: where have you been and why have you left us?
- 1:11Speaker 1: Because we know you did not want to. And they
- 1:13Speaker 1: spoke again, saying, Father, when you disappeared, the lamp over
- 1:17Speaker 1: the bodies of our fathers went out, and the bodies
- 1:20Speaker 1: were thrown about, and voices came from them. When Jared
- 1:23Speaker 1: heard this, he was sorry and went into the cave,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and there found the bodies thrown about, the lamp put out,
- 1:30Speaker 1: and the fathers themselves praying for his deliverance from the
- 1:32Speaker 1: hand of Satan. Then Jared fell upon the bodies and
- 1:35Speaker 1: embraced them and said, my father's, through your intercession, God
- 1:40Speaker 1: delivered me from the hand of Satan. I beg you
- 1:42Speaker 1: to ask God to keep me and to hide me
- 1:44Speaker 1: from him to the day of my death. Then all
- 1:46Speaker 1: the voices ceased except the voice of our father Adam,
- 1:49Speaker 1: who spoke to Jared by the power of God, just
- 1:52Speaker 1: as one would speak to his friend, saying, Jared, my son,
- 1:56Speaker 1: all forgifts to God for having delivered you from the
- 1:58Speaker 1: hand of Satan. And when you bring those offerings, offered
- 2:01Speaker 1: them on the same altar on which I gave offerings.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Even then, you must beware of Satan, for he deluded
- 2:07Speaker 1: me many a time, with his specters wishing to destroy me.
- 2:11Speaker 1: But God delivered me out of his hand. Command your
- 2:14Speaker 1: people that they be on guard against him, and never
- 2:16Speaker 1: ceased to offer up gifts to God. Then the voice
- 2:19Speaker 1: of Adam also became silent, and Jared and his children
- 2:22Speaker 1: wondered at this. Then they laid the bodies as they
- 2:25Speaker 1: were at first, and Jared and his children stood praying
- 2:27Speaker 1: the entire night until break of day. Then Jared made
- 2:31Speaker 1: an offering and offered it up on the altar as
- 2:33Speaker 1: Adam had commanded him. And as he went up to
- 2:35Speaker 1: the altar, he prayed to God for mercy and for
- 2:38Speaker 1: forgiveness of his sin concerning the lamp going out. Then
- 2:42Speaker 1: God appeared to Jared on the altar and blessed him
- 2:44Speaker 1: and his children and accepted their offerings, and commanded Jared
- 2:48Speaker 1: to take up the sacred fire from the altar and
- 2:50Speaker 1: light the lamp that shed light on the body of
- 2:52Speaker 1: Adam Chapter nineteen. Then God again revealed to him the
- 3:00Speaker 1: promise he had made to Adam. He explained to him
- 3:02Speaker 1: the five thy five hundred years and revealed to him
- 3:05Speaker 1: the mystery of his coming to the earth. And God
- 3:07Speaker 1: said to Jared, let that fire you have taken from
- 3:10Speaker 1: the altar to light the lamp. Abide with you to
- 3:13Speaker 1: give light to the bodies. Do not let it come
- 3:15Speaker 1: out of the cave until the body of Adam comes out.
- 3:17Speaker 1: But Jared, take care of the fire so that it
- 3:20Speaker 1: burns brightly in the lamp. Do not go out of
- 3:23Speaker 1: the cave again until you received an order through a
- 3:26Speaker 1: vision and not in an apparition. You see author's note.
- 3:30Speaker 1: The distinction here is that a vision is internal and
- 3:33Speaker 1: an apparition is external. Only God can guide us internally.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Satan must entice in trick through external plois. Then command
- 3:43Speaker 1: your people again not to have relations with the children
- 3:45Speaker 1: of Cain and not to learn their ways, for I
- 3:49Speaker 1: am God who does not love hatred and works of iniquity.
- 3:53Speaker 1: God also gave many other commandments to Jared, and he
- 3:55Speaker 1: blessed him and then withdrew his word from him. Then
- 4:00Speaker 1: Ared came near to his children, took some fire, and
- 4:03Speaker 1: came down to the cave and lighted the lamp in
- 4:05Speaker 1: front of the body of Adam. Then he gave his
- 4:07Speaker 1: people the commandments, just as God had told him to do.
- 4:10Speaker 1: This sign happened to Jared at the end of his
- 4:12Speaker 1: four hundred and fiftieth year, as did many other wonders
- 4:15Speaker 1: we did not record, but we record only this one
- 4:18Speaker 1: for the sake of brevity, to shorten oar written account.
- 4:21Speaker 1: And Jared continued to teach his children eighty years. But
- 4:24Speaker 1: after that they began to break the commandments he had
- 4:26Speaker 1: given them, and to do many things without his permission.
- 4:29Speaker 1: They began to go down from the Holy Mountain one
- 4:32Speaker 1: after another, and mixed with the children of Cain in
- 4:35Speaker 1: obscene association. Now the reason the children of Jared went
- 4:39Speaker 1: down the Holy Mountain will now be revealed to you
- 4:46Speaker 1: Chapter twenty. After Cain had gone to the land of
- 4:50Speaker 1: dark soil and his children had multiplied, there was one
- 4:53Speaker 1: of them whose name was Ginnon, son of Lamik, the blind,
- 4:56Speaker 1: who slew Cain. Satan came to Ginan and his childhood
- 4:59Speaker 1: and made of variety of trumpets and horns and string instruments,
- 5:03Speaker 1: symbols and sawtrees, and lyres and harps and flutes, and
- 5:06Speaker 1: Genin played them at all times and at every hour,
- 5:09Speaker 1: and when he played them Satan came to them, so
- 5:11Speaker 1: that from among them were heard beautiful and sweet sounds
- 5:14Speaker 1: that seized the heart with delight. And then he gathered
- 5:17Speaker 1: many crowds to play on them. And when they played,
- 5:20Speaker 1: it greatly pleased the children of Kan, who fanned themselves
- 5:23Speaker 1: to flames of sin among themselves, and they burned with
- 5:26Speaker 1: fire while satan inflamed their hearts with one another, and
- 5:29Speaker 1: lust increased among them. Satan also taught Genin to make
- 5:33Speaker 1: strong drink out of corn. Genin used this to bring
- 5:36Speaker 1: together crowd upon crowd and houses of drink, and brought
- 5:39Speaker 1: into their hands all kinds of fruits and flowers, and
- 5:42Speaker 1: they drank together. Genin did this to multiply sin greatly.
- 5:46Speaker 1: He also acted with pride and taught the children of
- 5:49Speaker 1: kin to commit all manner of the gross's wickedness, which
- 5:52Speaker 1: they did not know until then, And he put them
- 5:55Speaker 1: up to all kinds of deeds which they did not
- 5:57Speaker 1: know of before. Then. When Satan saw that they obeyed
- 6:00Speaker 1: Genin and listened to him in everything he told them,
- 6:03Speaker 1: he rejoiced greatly, and he increased Genin's understanding until he
- 6:07Speaker 1: took iron and with it made weapons of war. Then
- 6:10Speaker 1: when they were drunk. Hatred and murder increased among them.
- 6:14Speaker 1: One man would use violence against another, and Satan would
- 6:17Speaker 1: teach him evil, and that one man would take the
- 6:19Speaker 1: other man's children and defool them before him. And when
- 6:22Speaker 1: men saw they were vanquished, and saw that others were
- 6:25Speaker 1: not beaten, those who were beaten came to Genin and
- 6:28Speaker 1: took refuge with him, and he made them part of
- 6:30Speaker 1: his group. Then sin increased among them greatly, until a
- 6:34Speaker 1: man married his own sister or daughter or mother and others,
- 6:38Speaker 1: or the daughter of his father's sister first cousin, so
- 6:42Speaker 1: that there was no more distinction of relationship, and they
- 6:45Speaker 1: could no longer discern what was sin and what was not.
- 6:48Speaker 1: But always were wicked, and the earth was defiled with sin,
- 6:52Speaker 1: and they angered God, the judge who had created them.
- 6:56Speaker 1: But Genin gathered together groups and groups that played on
- 6:59Speaker 1: horns and on old the other instruments we have already
- 7:01Speaker 1: mentioned at the foot of the Holy mountain. They did
- 7:04Speaker 1: that so the children of Seth, who were on the
- 7:06Speaker 1: Holy Mountain would hear it. But when the children of
- 7:09Speaker 1: Seth heard the noise, they wondered and came by companies
- 7:13Speaker 1: and stood on the top of the mountain to look
- 7:14Speaker 1: at those below. This went on an entire year. At
- 7:18Speaker 1: the end of that year, Gendon saw that they were
- 7:20Speaker 1: being won over to him. Little by little, Satan entered
- 7:23Speaker 1: into him and taught him to make the elements for
- 7:26Speaker 1: dying garments of various patterns, and made him understand how
- 7:29Speaker 1: to die crimson and purple and whatnot. And the sons
- 7:32Speaker 1: of kin, who worked at all of this, shone in
- 7:35Speaker 1: beauty and gorgeous apparel. And they gathered together at the
- 7:37Speaker 1: foot of the mountain and splendor with horns and gorgeous
- 7:40Speaker 1: dresses and horse races. And they were committing all manner
- 7:44Speaker 1: of disgusting acts. Meanwhile, the children of Seth, who were
- 7:49Speaker 1: on the holy mountain, prayed and praised God in the
- 7:52Speaker 1: place of the host of angels who had fallen. God
- 7:55Speaker 1: had called them angels because he rejoiced over them greatly.
- 7:58Speaker 1: But after this time they no longer kept his commandment,
- 8:01Speaker 1: nor were held by the promise he had made to
- 8:03Speaker 1: their fathers. But they relaxed from there, fasting and praying,
- 8:07Speaker 1: and from the council of Jarrett, their father, and they
- 8:09Speaker 1: kept on gathering together on the top of the mountain
- 8:12Speaker 1: to watch the children of Kin from morning until evening,
- 8:15Speaker 1: and they watched what they did, and they looked at
- 8:17Speaker 1: their beautiful dresses and ornaments. Then the children of Kin
- 8:20Speaker 1: looked up from below and saw the children of Seth
- 8:24Speaker 1: standing in numbers on the top of the mountain, and
- 8:26Speaker 1: they called to them to come down to them. But
- 8:29Speaker 1: from above them the children of Seth said, we don't
- 8:32Speaker 1: know the way. Then Gennon, the son of Laymik, heard
- 8:35Speaker 1: them say they did not know the way, and he
- 8:37Speaker 1: began to think to himself of ways he might bring
- 8:39Speaker 1: them down. Then Satan appeared to him by night, saying,
- 8:43Speaker 1: there is no way for them to come down from
- 8:45Speaker 1: the part of the mountain on which they live. But
- 8:47Speaker 1: when they come out tomorrow to watch, say to them,
- 8:50Speaker 1: come to the western side of the mountain. There you
- 8:53Speaker 1: will find a stream of water that comes down to
- 8:55Speaker 1: the foot of the mountain between two hills, that marks
- 8:58Speaker 1: the way. Come down that way to us. Then, when
- 9:01Speaker 1: it was day, Genin blew the horns and beat the
- 9:04Speaker 1: drums below the mountain, as he was accustomed to do.
- 9:07Speaker 1: The children of Seth heard it and came as they
- 9:09Speaker 1: used to. Then Gennon said to them, from down below
- 9:13Speaker 1: go to the western side of the mountain. There you
- 9:15Speaker 1: will find the way to come down. But when the
- 9:18Speaker 1: children of Seth heard these words from him, they went
- 9:21Speaker 1: back into the cave to Jared to tell him all
- 9:23Speaker 1: they had heard. Then, when Jared heard it, he was
- 9:26Speaker 1: grieved because he knew that they would defy his wishes.
- 9:29Speaker 1: After this, a hundred men of the children of Seth
- 9:32Speaker 1: gathered together and set among themselves, come, let us go
- 9:36Speaker 1: down to the children of Cain and see what they do,
- 9:38Speaker 1: and enjoy ourselves with them. But when Jared heard this
- 9:42Speaker 1: of the hundred men, his very soul was moved and
- 9:45Speaker 1: his heart was grieved. He then stood with great emotion
- 9:48Speaker 1: in the middle of them and earnestly compelled them by
- 9:50Speaker 1: the blood of Able to just and said, let no
- 9:53Speaker 1: one of you go down from this holy, impure mountain
- 9:55Speaker 1: in which our fathers have ordered us to live. But
- 9:58Speaker 1: when Jared saw that they did not listen to his words,
- 10:00Speaker 1: he said to them, my good, innocent and holy children,
- 10:04Speaker 1: you must understand that once you go down from this
- 10:07Speaker 1: holy mountain, God will not allow you to return to
- 10:09Speaker 1: it again. He again asured them, saying, I plead with
- 10:13Speaker 1: you by the death of our father Adam, and by
- 10:15Speaker 1: the blood of Abel, of Seth, of Enos, of Canaan,
- 10:18Speaker 1: and of Mahalalel to listen to me. Do not go
- 10:21Speaker 1: down from this holy mountain, because the moment you leave it,
- 10:25Speaker 1: life and mercy will be taken from you, and you
- 10:27Speaker 1: shall no longer be called children of God, but children
- 10:30Speaker 1: of the devil. But they would not listen to his words.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Enoch was already grown up at that time, and in
- 10:37Speaker 1: his zeal for God, he stood and said, hear me, you,
- 10:41Speaker 1: large and small, young and old sons of Seth, when
- 10:44Speaker 1: you transgress the commandment of our fathers and go down
- 10:46Speaker 1: from this holy mountain, you shall not come up here
- 10:49Speaker 1: again forever. But they rose up against Enoch and would
- 10:53Speaker 1: not listen to his words. But they went down from
- 10:55Speaker 1: the holy mountain. And when they looked at the daughters
- 10:58Speaker 1: of Cain, at their beautiful fears, and at their hands
- 11:01Speaker 1: and feet dyed with color, and the tattoos on their
- 11:04Speaker 1: faces that ornamented them, the fire of sin was set
- 11:07Speaker 1: ablazing them. Then Satan made them look most beautiful before
- 11:11Speaker 1: the sons of Seth. As he also made the sons
- 11:14Speaker 1: of Seth appear the most handsome in the eyes of
- 11:16Speaker 1: the daughters of Cain, so that the daughters of Cain
- 11:19Speaker 1: lusted after the sons of Seth like ravenous beasts, and
- 11:22Speaker 1: the sons of Seth lusted after the daughters of Cain
- 11:25Speaker 1: until they committed disgusting and disgraceful acts with them. But
- 11:28Speaker 1: after they had fallen into this defilement, they returned by
- 11:31Speaker 1: the way they had come and tried to ascend the
- 11:34Speaker 1: Holy Mountain, but they could not because the stones of
- 11:37Speaker 1: that holy mountain were on fire flashing before them and
- 11:40Speaker 1: prevented them, so that they could not go up again.
- 11:42Speaker 1: And God was angry with them and turned from them
- 11:45Speaker 1: because they had come down from glory and because of
- 11:48Speaker 1: this had lost and forsaken their own purity and innocence,
- 11:51Speaker 1: and were fallen and to the defilement of sin. Then
- 11:55Speaker 1: God sent his word to Jared, saying, these of your children,
- 11:58Speaker 1: whom you once called mia children, have broken my commandment
- 12:02Speaker 1: and have gone down to the house of damnation and sin.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Send a messenger to those that are left, so that
- 12:08Speaker 1: they will not go down and be lost. Then Jared
- 12:11Speaker 1: wept before the Lord and asked him for mercy and forgiveness.
- 12:14Speaker 1: But he wished that his soul might depart from his
- 12:16Speaker 1: body rather than hear these words from God about his
- 12:19Speaker 1: children that went down from the holy mountain. But he
- 12:22Speaker 1: followed God's order and preached to them not to go
- 12:25Speaker 1: down from that holy mountain and not to hold relations
- 12:27Speaker 1: with the children of Cain. But they did not listen
- 12:30Speaker 1: to his message, and they would not obey his advice
- 12:37Speaker 1: Chapter twenty one. After this, another group gathered together and
- 12:41Speaker 1: went to look after their brothers. But they perished with
- 12:44Speaker 1: them as well, and so it was company after company,
- 12:47Speaker 1: until only a few of them remained. Then Jared was
- 12:50Speaker 1: sickened with grief, and his sickness was such that the
- 12:53Speaker 1: day of his death was near. Then he called Enoch,
- 12:56Speaker 1: his eldest son, and Methuselah, Enoch's son, Lamik, the son
- 13:00Speaker 1: of Methuselah, and Noah, the son of Lamik. When they
- 13:04Speaker 1: came to him, he prayed over them and blessed them,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and said to them, you are righteous, innocent sons. Do
- 13:11Speaker 1: not go down from this holy mountain, because you have
- 13:13Speaker 1: seen your children and your children's children have gone down
- 13:17Speaker 1: from this holy mountain and have alienated themselves from this
- 13:19Speaker 1: holy mountain through their reprehensible lust and transgression from God's commandment.
- 13:25Speaker 1: But I know through the power of God that He
- 13:28Speaker 1: will not leave you on this holy mountain. Your children
- 13:30Speaker 1: have transgressed His commandment and that of our fathers, which
- 13:34Speaker 1: He had received from them. But my sons, God will
- 13:37Speaker 1: take you to a strange land, and you never shall
- 13:40Speaker 1: return to see this garden and this holy mountain with
- 13:42Speaker 1: your own eyes once again. Therefore, my sons, set your
- 13:45Speaker 1: hearts on your own selves, and keep the commandment of
- 13:48Speaker 1: God which is with you. And when you go from
- 13:50Speaker 1: this holy mountain into a strange land which you do
- 13:52Speaker 1: not know, take the body of our father Adam with you,
- 13:56Speaker 1: and with it take these three precious gifts and offerings,
- 14:00Speaker 1: the gold, the incense, and the mirh and let them
- 14:03Speaker 1: be in the place where the body of our father
- 14:05Speaker 1: Adam shall lay. And let them be in the place
- 14:07Speaker 1: where the body of our father Adam shall lay. And
- 14:10Speaker 1: my sons of you who are left, the Word of
- 14:13Speaker 1: God will come. And when he goes out of this land,
- 14:16Speaker 1: he shall take with him the body of our father
- 14:18Speaker 1: Adam and shall lay it in the middle of the earth,
- 14:21Speaker 1: the place in which salvation shall be worked out. Then
- 14:24Speaker 1: Noah said to him who is he of us that
- 14:26Speaker 1: shall be left? And Jared answered, you are he that
- 14:30Speaker 1: shall be left, And you shall take the body of
- 14:32Speaker 1: our father Adam from the cave and place it with
- 14:34Speaker 1: you in the ark when the flood comes, and your
- 14:37Speaker 1: son Shem, who shall come out of your loins, it
- 14:40Speaker 1: is he who shall lay the body of our father
- 14:42Speaker 1: Adam in the middle of the earth and the place
- 14:44Speaker 1: where salvation shall come. Then Jared turned to his son
- 14:48Speaker 1: Enoch and said to him, my son, abide in this
- 14:51Speaker 1: cave and ministered diligently before the body of our father Adam,
- 14:55Speaker 1: all the days of your life and feature people in
- 14:58Speaker 1: righteousness and innocence. Jared said no more. His hands went limp,
- 15:03Speaker 1: his eyes closed, and he entered into rest like his father's.
- 15:07Speaker 1: His death took place in the three hundred and sixtieth
- 15:09Speaker 1: year of Noah and in the nine hundred and eighty
- 15:12Speaker 1: ninth year of his own life, on the twelfth of Toxis,
- 15:15Speaker 1: on a Friday. Author's note. In this year, the month
- 15:19Speaker 1: of Toxis was likely to be December. But as Jared died,
- 15:24Speaker 1: tears streamed down his face by reason of his great
- 15:26Speaker 1: sorrow for the children of Seth, who had fallen in
- 15:28Speaker 1: his days. Then Enoch, Mathusalah, Leamik, and Noah. These four
- 15:34Speaker 1: wept over him, embalmed him carefully, and then laid him
- 15:38Speaker 1: in the Cave of Treasures. Then they rose and mourned
- 15:41Speaker 1: for him forty days. And when these days of mourning
- 15:43Speaker 1: were ended, Enoch, Methuselah, Lemik, and Noah remained in sorrow
- 15:49Speaker 1: of heart because their father had departed from them and
- 15:51Speaker 1: could not see him again.
