- 4:20Also for Kemtne the Miracle Wall Finish, and all for today's mysterious adventure
- 4:29with Nick cutter. As we start our story today, we find Nick and
- 4:34his assistant Patsy, a Nick's car racing toward Mount Alban's College for Girls in
- 4:39response to a hurried phone call from the dean of the school. But if
- 4:43this girl killed her self, Nick, what are you supposed to do?
- 4:46The girl kills herself, there's no criminal to catch if it was suicide.
- 4:50Dean Collingwood wants me to find the reason for it. Isn't that a little
- 4:54out of your line? Well, yes, it is, Patsy, but
- 4:56she's an old friend of mine, so I said I'd do it. But
- 4:59why does she care why the girl killed herself? Oh? She thinks that
- 5:01if some of the parents felt that the girl disliked the school enough to kill
- 5:04herself to get out of it, they'd take their own daughters out of Mount
- 5:06Albans and droves the school will be ruined. How did she dine yet?
- 5:12Dadean said she found a box of sleeping capsules on the table beside the girl's
- 5:15bed, together with an empty water glass. She thought they might be the
- 5:18cause. Well, when Nicholas Carter gets on the scene, everything will be
- 5:23all straightened out. We'll all know exactly what happened and why? And this
- 5:35Margaret is my assistant and severest critic. Patsy Bowen, Patsy Dean Collingwood,
- 5:41head of Mount Albins. How do you do, miss Bowen? Fine?
- 5:43Thank you? Have you notified the police yet? Margaret? Why? No?
- 5:46I wanted you to look things over first, sneak I see? But
- 5:49who found the body? When Miss Jordan failed to appear for breakfast, one
- 5:54of the maids was sent to see if she needed help, if she were
- 5:57ill. When no one answered, the maid's course, she came back me.
- 6:00Then you found her? Yes, I found her dead. How many
- 6:05people know about the tragedy so far? Oh? Only the maid myself and
- 6:10of course you too. Good. Let's keep it that way for a while
- 6:13longer. Now may I see her room? Please? Yes, of course
- 6:15it's on the next floor, this way? Please? What can you tell
- 6:18me about this Jordan girl? She was an only child, Her mother is
- 6:23a widow. Did you have any close friends? Yes, she and three
- 6:27other girls were together quite a lot. They were Miss Her and Miss Grinnell
- 6:30and Miss Brown. They are all interested in the same things. Three friends
- 6:34were interested primarily in young men and good times. But miss Jordan's hobby was
- 6:41amateur photography. Did you have money? Yes? She did. Her mother
- 6:45gave her everything she wanted. This is her room, Nick, I'll say
- 6:51she had money. Nick. You don't get rugs like these with the Gaco
- 6:55plans. Are these the sleeping capsules? Margaret? Yes, hmm. You
- 7:00can't buy these in this state without a prescription. She had a prescription,
- 7:04the number of it in the physician's name on the box. So I see,
- 7:09and I'll check with him later. I pass. He suppose you look
- 7:12over the things on that side of the room while I go through her desk
- 7:14here. See if you can find anything that might help us learn what's happened.
- 7:16Right, Any letters, Bill's notes and so on. You know you
- 7:20rarely shouldn't read her letters, Nick, There their private. Well, if
- 7:24any reporters happen to get hold of them, they'll be as public as Central
- 7:27Park reporters. What have they to do with this? Everything? You can't
- 7:30hide suicide or murder? Please this this mustn't be murder. Well, I
- 7:34hope not, Margaret, for your sake, Oh, this is interesting.
- 7:39Letter to her mother started but never finished. Darling mother, I hope you
- 7:44will remember all is how close we have been, and how much happiness we've
- 7:46had together. You've been so good to me, and that's as far as
- 7:50you got. I wonder why she didn't finish it. That sounds like a
- 7:54farewell letter. It was a farewell know, of course, Well I wasn't
- 7:58it finished? Then she's probably overcome with emotion. I don't think so.
- 8:03She hadn't been crying. Her eyelids aren't red or swollen. Good girl,
- 8:07passy, Oh Margaret. Will you ask your chemistry professor to analyze one of
- 8:11these sleeping capsules? Very well, Nick, although I still think that this
- 8:15is all nonsense. Also, i'd like to use your study. I want
- 8:18to talk to this Jordan girl's three friends one at a time, very well.
- 8:22I don't tell them anything about the Jordan girls being dead. All right,
- 8:24Nick, I'll send the first girl into you in a few minutes.
- 8:37Come in you wanted to see me, sir. I'm Mary Garnell. Yes,
- 8:43come in, yes, sir as Granell. I'm afraid I have a
- 8:48shock for you. Your friend Edith Jordan has just killed herself. Oh no,
- 8:56Edith wouldn't do that. She just wouldn't. No, at any rate,
- 9:01she's dead. I'm sorry to say. Can you shed any light on
- 9:05the situation? I'm afraid not. I'm sorry, But do you know anything
- 9:09about her actions? Last night? We studied together for at her exams in
- 9:15your room or hers in mine. She went back to her room early though
- 9:20that she wanted to write a letter and then turn in early. That must
- 9:22have been the letter we found in it? Probably Can you tell me anything
- 9:26else, Miss Ganew, No, sir, nothing, all right? Then
- 9:31run along and please don't mention what I've told you to anyone. Mister Hearne,
- 9:41I'm sure you'll be sorry to learn that your friend Edith Jordan has killed
- 9:45herself. Oh no, she wouldn't. Was she couldn't. She wasn't that
- 9:50kind of a girl. What makes you say that? Oh? Lots of
- 9:54things, and especially because we planned to go to a matinee together on day.
- 10:00She even got the tickets for us. Tell me, Miss so Hearn
- 10:05in your opinion that Edith ever seen morbid or unhappy? Oh? No?
- 10:09Never? Uh oh, except except what will? When Edith first came here
- 10:16she was very gay. Lately she's been very quiet. I don't know why,
- 10:22though, Well, thanks very much, Miss hern ask Miss Brown to
- 10:24come in. Will you, Yes, sir, you can go in now
- 10:28else all right? You wanted to see me, Miss Brown. Edith Jordan
- 10:37killed herself last night, killed herself. No, you couldn't make me believe
- 10:46that. Why do you say that? Edith wasn't that kind of beside?
- 10:52Lately she's been afraid of something, afraid afraid of what. I don't know.
- 10:58But for the last month she's lived in fears, something that might have
- 11:01come for the sleeping capsule. Possibly, How do you know she was afraid,
- 11:05Miss Brown? Oh, the girls never lock our doors here in the
- 11:11dormitory, but she did. Perhaps she was just timid. She wasn't timid
- 11:15when she first came here. No, what do you know when she first
- 11:18began locking her door? Yes, it was right after someone took a shot
- 11:22at her in the woods. What's that someone shot at her? Are you
- 11:26sure? Jdith said she knew it was true, but she asked me not
- 11:31to mention it to anyone. Was she alone when this happened? Yes,
- 11:35she often went into the woods alone with her camera. And did she go
- 11:39into the woods after this someone took a shot at her? Oh? No,
- 11:41after that she used her car and took pictures from the highway. Oh,
- 11:45she had her own car? Yes? Or do you happen to know
- 11:48whether miss Jordan was taking a sleeping remedy lately? I don't think she was.
- 11:54She had some harmless preparation the doctor gave her, but I don't think
- 11:58she ever used. Apparently it wasn't entirely harmless, unless I'm mistaken she died
- 12:05from taking it. Thank you, Miss Brown. Yes and cutter Dean Collenwood
- 12:20asked me to let you know what I found out when I analyzed the sleeping
- 12:24capsule she gave me. Oh, yes, yes, what was it?
- 12:28Now? I found nothing unusual about it. It's a sleeping remedy that's in
- 12:31common use. Would they be enough to kill anybody? Oh? No,
- 12:33indeed not unless they were accompanied by something far more deadly. Thank you for
- 12:37Thank you very much. Oh hello, Margaret, come in Well, Nick,
- 12:43have you learned anything yet? Only that I'm sure Miss Jordan didn't kill
- 12:48herself. But Nick, that's the one thing I don't want to find out.
- 12:52Yes, I know, Margaret, but I can't help facts being facts.
- 12:54Well, but now I think I'll take a run into town and talk
- 12:58with a physician who prescribed capsules for her. Will you do something for men.
- 13:03Certainly, will you take the bus into town and come back in Miss
- 13:07Jordan's car. It's being repaired there, and the garage phoned a short time
- 13:11ago that it's ready. I promised to send someone in for it. Of
- 13:13course, passy while I'm gone, I want you to go over Edith Jordan's
- 13:18room with a fine tooth comb. Notice every little thing will look for you,
- 13:20anything specially no Patsy, just looking. You've heard what these girls have
- 13:24told us. See if you can find anything, explain the Jordan girl's actions
- 13:28during the past few weeks. I'll see you when I get back in town,
- 13:41Doctor Steele. According to the label on the package, you prescribe some
- 13:43sleeping capsules for Miss Edith Jordan. Edith Jordan, Oh yes, I remember
- 13:52her now, Plucky Kidden. I'm not a whimper out of her when I
- 13:56set her collar bone, even refuse an anaesthetic. Did you say she broke
- 14:01her collar bone? Why? Yes, it was about two months ago,
- 14:05I should say, but there were no complications and the injury healed rapidly.
- 14:11Do you remember how it happened? Oh? Well, yes, in an
- 14:13automobile accident, and that was when I prescribed the sleeping remedy for her,
- 14:18just as a precaution. I don't suppose she needed a very strong dose.
- 14:22No, no, it was a very small one, one three quarter grain
- 14:28capsule, and well second one an hour later if required. What would be
- 14:33a deadly dose, doctor, Oh, from forty to fifty times that much?
- 14:37Probably did you give her the prescription? No? No, I phoned
- 14:41it into the drug store and he had it ready for when she got there.
- 14:45I often do. Then, I see, well, thank you very
- 14:48much, doctor, you've been very kind. Now, if you'll tell me
- 14:50which way the drug store is, I won't bother you any longer. Well,
- 15:03so, Edith Jordan had a broken collar bone a few weeks ago.
- 15:05That's something no one but the doctor had ever known about before. What else
- 15:09is Nick going to uncover in his search for the real reason why Edith Jordan
- 15:13was found dead in her bed in exclusive Mount Alvin's College. We'll see in
- 15:18just a moment. If you're a homemaker, you have every reason to take
- 15:22pride in a home that fairly gleams with the evidence of careful attention. And
- 15:28every wood and linoleum surface in your home will gleam when you use Linex Clear
- 15:31Gloss Varnish because Linux Clear Gloss lends a lustrous finish that keeps its beauty a
- 15:37long long time. It lessens your housework amazingly too, for it's so easy
- 15:43to keep clean. Dirt stays on the surface where you can wipe it away
- 15:46in a jiffy, and Linux Clear Gloss is so simple to apply. You
- 15:52just brush it on and it dries without brush marks to an elastic, transparent
- 15:56finish that wears and wears, a finish which protect every surface to which it's
- 16:00applied. Yes, it's a fact. Linux Clear Gloss protects all the wood
- 16:06and linoleum surfaces in your home against damage by boiling water, hot grease,
- 16:10fruit acids, perfume, even alcohol. In every way, it's truly the
- 16:15super varnish. Ask for it by name at your dealers Linx, ln X,
- 16:22Linx Clear Gloss Varnish. You'll find all three great Linex Home Bright News
- 16:29and kem Tom the Miracle Wall Finish at hardware, paint and department stores everywhere.
- 16:40And I'm back to our story. As we left Nick, he was
- 16:44learning things about the dead girl Edith Jordan that not even Dean Collinwood. Dean
- 16:48of exclusive mod Albans College for Girls knew. Did she commit suicide or was
- 16:52it murder? Let's pick up Nick as he calls at the drug store where
- 16:56the sleeping capsules the doctor prescribed for Edith Jordan were made up. Yes,
- 17:00sir, I'm sorry to bother you, but would you be good enough to
- 17:03allow me to see the prescription for a sleeping remedy prescribed for miss Edith Jordan
- 17:07by doctor Steele about two months ago. I'm sorry, Savi it our records
- 17:12are available only to the police or the doctor, but I can ensure you
- 17:17that the prescription was filled exactly as ordered. Very well, I understand I
- 17:22thought you would. Sad case, isn't it? Yes? Very Oh did
- 17:27you fill the prescription yourself? I believe I did. I remember thinking that
- 17:33college girls these days used five too many sleeping preparations. Yes, course,
- 17:38thank you. This is her car, mister Carter. I should have expected
- 17:48a girl with her money to have a more expensive car. She wasn't.
- 17:52No shore, Yeah, too bad of luck ran out. Finally luck ran
- 17:57out. What do you mean by thatcident? Look? God, that was
- 18:02no accident. How do you mean why someone saw the gadget on the steir
- 18:06and wheel almost threw. First time the car went around a sharp curve at
- 18:08high speed, it gave way only as luck to have it. Instead of
- 18:12going over the embankment, the car just turned into a hill of dert along
- 18:15the road and buried its snows in the dirt as Jordan got off with just
- 18:18a broken collar board instead of being killed altogether. Did you tell miss Jordan
- 18:23what you just told me? You bet? I did. Didn't worry her
- 18:26at all, and I told the cops too, Only the boss said it
- 18:32was none of our business if she didn't want to report it. I see,
- 18:36Well, thanks very much for seeing you. Well, what can I
- 18:47do for you? Miss Carr? You're running a story on the suicide of
- 18:49the Jordan girl at Mount Alban's College. Sure we are big news for this
- 18:53time. O. Could you add one little paragraph to your story? What
- 18:56kind of paragraph? Miss Jordan left a diary? It's locked in a steel
- 19:00box for which we've not been able to locate the key. May take a
- 19:04day or so to have a new key made. Is it's a very special
- 19:07type of lock, But we expect to die really clear up the motive for
- 19:11the suicide. That's very interesting. It's Coulter. May I coach you on
- 19:15them? Well, if you don't mind, I'd rather you use that well
- 19:18known phrase it is understood. Oh that should cover it. I see what
- 19:23you mean. I don't know what you've got up your sleeve, mister cutter,
- 19:27but we'll play along with you. Your little item will be understood in
- 19:32this evening's paper. Thank you, Thank you very much. Should help us
- 19:34immensely well. Patsy find anything in Edith Jordan's room, I don't expect it
- 19:48to master that, Nick. And here it is Exhibit A, A hat
- 19:52with what looks like a bullet hole through the crown. Yes, so miss
- 19:57Brown was right, someone did shoot at it. Anything else. The only
- 20:03other thing I found was this Exhibit D, the picture that Edith Jordan took
- 20:07just before she was shot at. She didn't have any enlarging apparatus, so
- 20:11she gave it to Alice Brown, who does have an inlarger She wanted it
- 20:14blown up. But why look, Nick, it's a picture of spring Lake
- 20:18that's just north of here. Here in the center of the backgrounds a figure.
- 20:22Neither Edith nor Alice knew who or what it was, so Alice made
- 20:26an enlargement of it to see if they could recognize it. Beyond the fact
- 20:30that it seems to be the figure of a man, it doesn't mean much.
- 20:33You can't see who he is. Patsy, Where did you get this?
- 20:36Alice Brown gave it to me. She had it in her room.
- 20:38She and Edith thought there might be some connection between the shooting and this picture.
- 20:42That they couldn't seem to find any doesn't mean much, does it?
- 20:48And yet did you find out anything in town? Oh? Yes, and
- 20:51no. The way things look now, this is the situation. Edith Jordan,
- 20:56perhaps I'm on to herself, knew something that placed her life in what
- 21:00she was shot at, and she was in a phony auto accident in which
- 21:03she got a broken collarbone. I don't think she ever used the sleeping capsule
- 21:07she got from doctor Steel until very recently. Yeah, she'd probably been getting
- 21:11more and more nervous about things, until at last she felt she had to
- 21:14have something to put her asleep. So last night she took one or more
- 21:18of the capsules and they killed her. And yet the physician who prescribed them
- 21:22as a reputable man at the drug store, whether we made up, also
- 21:26has a good reputation so far. That's as far as here. Mind if
- 21:33I come in and bother you a few minutes, mister Carr, first,
- 21:37nutsheff, come right on in, thank you. Oh man, Hey,
- 21:40look, mister Carr, you got some theory about this kid committed suicide?
- 21:44Only one theory is there? She didn't kill herself? Can you prove it?
- 21:48I expect to be able to when in the next twenty four hours?
- 21:52Twenty four hours? Would you give me that long without interfering? Yeah,
- 21:56yep, you got it. You know that pictures lake there and your desk
- 22:00reminds me we we came across a murder out there at the lake just yesterday.
- 22:06What was the murder? Well? Do yes? Thought maybe there might
- 22:10be some connection between the two killings, that's all? Oh heck, no,
- 22:12notice this college girl and a woman we found out the lake are two
- 22:15different kinds of people. No connection told or what was it you found at
- 22:19the lake? Yeah? Woman and there a couple of months. It was
- 22:23a waitress at the roadhouse near the lake. And what happened to her,
- 22:26Oh, slugging the back of the head, skull crushed and almost buried in
- 22:30the brush. Hunter found her yesterday too, bad. By the way,
- 22:34mister Carter, what's the idea with whole inevidence? What evidence at their diary?
- 22:40Oh? The diary? Yeah, you know, I'm going to break
- 22:44somebody for overlooking that this morning when they searched that girl's room. Wait,
- 22:47twenty four hours there, Remember you hit me twenty four hours? Yeah?
- 22:52Yeah, I remember why I let you wind me around your finger this way.
- 22:56I don't know. It couldn't be because you you haven't any clues,
- 23:00and you think that I might have one. Eh, well, could be,
- 23:07Cotter, could be? Did I understand you correctly? Nick? You
- 23:21want to spend the night in the girl's dormitory. That's what I said,
- 23:25Margaret, I want your permission to spend the night in Edith Jordan's room.
- 23:27Nick, That would be most irregular, Margaret. Murder is most irregular too.
- 23:33I'm sure it is murdered, absolutely positive, and I hope to solve
- 23:37it by spending the night in her room. But if it was murder,
- 23:41how was it done? Babarbai? The contents of one of the sleeping capsules
- 23:45was changed to a deadly poison. But Nick means that means that no stone
- 23:48must be left unturned to catch the murderer. It's time for lights up,
- 24:03Nick. I just want to see if you needed anything you don't have before
- 24:06I leave you. No, Patsy, I'm all set. What are you
- 24:08going to do? Nick? Just sit here and wait. Let's it exactly,
- 24:11Just wait. I have all the evidence I need for a conviction except
- 24:15the name of the killer. I could guess at that, but I couldn't
- 24:18prove it. I expect the killer to prove it for me. Why do
- 24:22you suppose Edith Jordan never told anyone about her fears. Probably she didn't want
- 24:26to worry anyone. She'd only suspicions, no matter how strong those suspicions were.
- 24:32And if I guess correctly the kind of girl she was, she wouldn't
- 24:33want to burden anyone else with her troubles. It's too bad, isn't It
- 24:37might have been alive now if she'd only told somebody true enough, Patty,
- 24:41and hindsight is always better than foresight. Well, Nick, I'll say good
- 24:45night, happy hunting to you. Thanks, Patsy. I'll just sit here
- 24:49in the dark and wait. Get your hands up. I'll in their hands,
- 25:15I said, I can see you plain enough. That's better now for
- 25:19some light. Well, so it's you, the mechanic from the garage.
- 25:25What's all this about? Anyway? You came here to get the diary,
- 25:27didn't you? Oh? Did I? I thought? So? That was
- 25:33your picture Miss Jordan got on her snapshot of spring Lake, wasn't it?
- 25:34Now? Was it proven? I can do that too. In the picture,
- 25:38the cap on the head of the little figure has two white dots on
- 25:41it in the same place where you wear your two white union buttons. You
- 25:45can't call that proof. Anybody could have those. You must have taken that
- 25:48picture at the time you were burying that girl you killed the waitress. You
- 25:52were afraid she'd identify you was the one of the pictures, so you took
- 25:56a shot at her, but you missed, and you tried another sound.
- 26:00You worked late at the garage one night and weakened the steering gear a car.
- 26:03When that failed to kill her, you were very careful to be the
- 26:06first to point out to her that the steering gear had been tampered with,
- 26:08and that way she'd never think to blame you for it, which was very
- 26:11clever, my friend. But then you were stumped until you found out that
- 26:17her doctor had given her that sleeping prescription. So being a morphine addict yourself,
- 26:22how do you know that? I saw your arms the other day and
- 26:26I recognized the scars of the needle. O. Kay, okay, you
- 26:30got it on me. You win. So, as I said, being
- 26:33a morphine addict yourself, you broke into her room just as you did tonight
- 26:36and filled one of the capsules in the top row with morphine, which would
- 26:38kill her instantly. Yeah, I knew she couldn't take that much of a
- 26:41dose. By the way, how did you find out about that prescription?
- 26:47She told me about it itself when we were talking one time. But if
- 26:49you knew all this stuff before, why don't you pull me in down the
- 26:52garage instead of laye and wait for me? Like this, I could prove
- 26:55it all her myself, but I couldn't prove it to a jury. However,
- 26:59now I can because you're coming here. You've confessed. It's a shame
- 27:04killing her like that, because she never had the slightest suspicion you were the
- 27:08Spring Lake murderer. I don't try to kid me. She knew right enough.
- 27:11That's why I had to get that diary. A whole story would have
- 27:15been in that Maybe that girl I killed. She was in love with me.
- 27:18She wanted me to marry her. Said if I didn't, she tell
- 27:21the cops where I bought my dope. It's such a fuss. I finally
- 27:23had to hit her over the head and you were burying her by the lake
- 27:26when the Jordan girl came along and took that picture here. Then I knew
- 27:30that when the body was discovered like it would be someday this day. Remember
- 27:33seeing me out there. So I had to get that diary before the cops
- 27:37got it. Well, as you go to the electric chair, I want
- 27:41you to remember one thing, my friend. There is no diary. Huh.
- 27:45I invented it to smoke you out in the open. You've convicted yourself.
- 27:48A man's own conscience is a better detective than the greatest detective on earth.

- 29:26And now let's hear from Nick Catter himself. And now, Nick,
- 29:30what's the story you're going to tell us next time? Well? Can next
- 29:34week? I want to tell you about an adventure I had just because I
- 29:37went to a party to meet a famous man and the famous man never showed
- 29:41up at all. Doesn't sound as if the party was much of a success.
- 29:44As far as I was concerned, it was a total flop socially speaking,
- 29:47and there were three murders as a result of that evening's get together,
- 29:49and Nick himself was almost added to the list, all due to a decanter
- 29:53of whiskey that turned out not to be whiskey at all. I think that's
- 29:56about enough for now, Patsy. Let's save the rest for next week and
- 30:00on behalf of myself from the rest of our cast, our organist Lou White,
- 30:04our sound effects Walt Shaver, our engineer Hermann Berger, and I writer
- 30:10and director Jack McGregor. May I wish every one of you the season's greetings
- 30:15in the biggest possible way. And that goes for me too. So long,
- 30:18everybody, So long to both. We'll be seeing again next week.
- 30:30Next week. At the same time, listen to another curious experience of Nick
- 30:34Carter Master Detective entitled Death in a Decanter Are Nick Carter and the Mystery of
- 30:42the Missing Brother Nick Cotter, Master Detective is featured in Street and Smith magazines.
- 30:52Lawn Clark is starred as Nick with Helen Choultis. Patsy original music is
- 30:56played by Lou White, and the programs are written and directed by Jock McGregor,
- 31:02now ACME, creator of the three great Linux Home Bright News, Linux
- 31:07Clear Gloss Varnish, Linux Cream Polish and Linux Self Polishing. Wax wishes you
- 31:11the hardiest breathings of the holiday season and invite you to be listening next week,
- 31:15when ACNE will again present. Nick caught her Master Detective over these same
- 31:19stations, Ken Powell speaking, this is mutual welcome back. Well, this
- 31:29one was just a solid kind of nuts and bolts investigation by Nick. Nothing
- 31:38really unbelievable. But the only thing I struggled with was Nick Carter being called
- 31:44in to investigate it, just because he seems to have such a high status,
- 31:49plus the he tends to have sensational cases and that was a little log
- 31:55given her worries about publicity. But other than that, when he actually came
- 31:59down to the stre I thought everything here was just excellent and very very entertaining,
- 32:07and I definitely enjoyed this episode in the way it just naturally developed the
- 32:13cases to who did it all? Right? Well, now on to some
- 32:15listener comments and feedback. I want to thank Chuck b for a retweeting episode
- 32:24eleven twenty the funeral wreath to his listeners. Thanks so much. Then we
- 32:30have an email from Randy with an I. She writes, it recently occurred
- 32:35to me that I may not be the only person who enjoys old radio shows.
- 32:39I decided to see if perhaps an iPhone app actually existed for them.
- 32:44To my great surprise, I found yours. First, I want you to
- 32:46know that I've been enjoying your podcast very much. I started episode one and
- 32:52I'm pretty sure I'll never catch up, but that is okay. Second,
- 32:54my reason for the email. Why has Pat nallvac played as such an angry,
- 33:00short tempered person. Was it overacting? Thank you so much for the
- 33:04podcast, and I hope you'll continue for years to come. Well, I
- 33:07definitely hope so as well, and I appreciate your con email. Randy.
- 33:12I don't think it was overacting as much as it was the nature of the
- 33:15show to really go over the top. There were we kind of transitioned away
- 33:24when you got into the middle part of the nineteen forties forty six forty seven,
- 33:30we kind of trans went away from a lot of the more gentlemanly detectives.
- 33:39The mister Keynes and the and the Nick and the Nick Charles characters,
- 33:47you know, the Mister and Missus North. Those those shows were still around,
- 33:52but they weren't the ones that were coming out. You had much more
- 33:55hard boiled characters like Sam Spay. You had Richard Rogue by Dick Powell.
- 34:07You had Ross Dolan played by William Gargan, and so you had a lot
- 34:13of these characters that were a lot tougher and rougher. And really it was
- 34:17a decision just to take everything over the top, and they took it over
- 34:22the top, and they did it really so well in making it, you
- 34:28know, just the epitome of hard boiled. The dialogue, the situations,
- 34:36everything just really taken to extreme in a way that I think still works pretty
- 34:39well. So it wasn't overacting. It was just the way the show was
- 34:43written, and it worked perfectly for Web and it worked perfectly for bringing the
- 34:46writer. Thanks so much for the comment. Then, Roderick emails in love
- 34:52the show listen. Used to listen to your drag Nap podcast, but finished
- 34:55it the week after you stopped. Keep up the good work. Well,
- 35:00thanks so much, Roderick, And we're about a little less than six months
- 35:05away from restarting Dragnet on the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio. And it'll
- 35:09be a pleasure to take another run through the series and appreciate everyone who listened
- 35:15to the to our first run on the Old Time Dragnet Show. And pretty
- 35:21soon we'll get started on the second run through with a lot of better audio
- 35:25and a better host just by nature of experience, since we've been doing this
- 35:30nearly seven years now. Then we have a comment by Vowel that will be
- 35:36of relevance to our UK listeners. UK fans might be interested to know that
- 35:42Channel seven to ninety one, or the very last channel on Freeboot started broadcasting
- 35:49old Tom Kelly last week got to see several episodes of Dragnet over the weekend.
- 35:54Great to hear and I hope that those UK listeners that watch television will
- 36:04avail themselves of that opportunity. Thank you so much. And before we did
- 36:09go or did finish, I wanted to mention the lost episode the titles.
- 36:16The two that were lost between this week and last week were Murder Boss Suicide
- 36:22from December tenth of nineteen forty four and Strands of Murder from December seventeenth,
- 36:29and it will be a while till we have another lost episode. Nick Carter
- 36:34is somewhat of an odd series in that there are more a higher percentage of
- 36:42missing programs before after the war than there are before the war, which is
- 36:50unusual, just because various shortages and drives tended to cause a lot of the
- 36:57wartime programs for most series to get lost. But there are a lot of
- 37:00Nick Carter war programs available, but the post war ones. You get to
- 37:05nineteen forty nine and you can only find three episodes from that whole year,
- 37:10and then none of the episodes that aired over the next six seasons. So
- 37:15that's an unusual feature of that series. All right, And before we do
- 37:21go, I want to again remind you to support a Listener support campaign.
- 37:27Again. We have various thank you gifts available for our donations of twenty of
- 37:32twenty dollars or more, and we have a few items. I do have
- 37:39some various books that I've written, and I'll send you your choice of those
- 37:45books, which include the superhero ones, also includes my first detective novel slash
- 37:54political thriller, Slim Incorporated, and I will send you an autographed copy for
- 38:01a donation of fifty dollars or more. We have a lot more items of
- 38:06movies downloads. You can check them all out at support dot Greatdetectives dot net.
- 38:14Well, that will do it for today. Join us back here tomorrow
- 38:15we wrap up the Cranesburg matter, and then on next Thursday, be sure
- 38:22and listen to another episode of Nick Carter in the meantime. Your comments are
