- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. I am so glad that you're joining
- 0:06me today. Happy Monday.
- 0:08Welcome to a new fresh week. I am just praying that wherever
- 0:13you are listening from right now, that you would be able to
- 0:17take a deep breath and fully allow yourself to slow down,
- 0:22listen to the Scripture read over you, and reflect on some
- 0:27things that the Lord has been teaching me and I pray would
- 0:31also minister to your heart as well.
- 0:34So we're going to be reading through First John chapter 5,
- 0:38verses 11:50. And I want to talk about
- 0:42something through these verses that has honestly been changing
- 0:46the way that I view my relationship with the Lord.
- 0:49And it's this understanding that eternal life is not just
- 0:53something that is waiting for us at the end someday in heaven,
- 0:57but it is quite literally right now and it is through Jesus.
- 1:02So let's go ahead and read the verses.
- 1:06Those who believe in the Son of God have the living testimony in
- 1:10their hearts. Those who don't believe have
- 1:14made God out to be a liar by not believing the testimony God has
- 1:19confirmed about His Son. This is the true testimony that
- 1:24God has given us eternal life, and this life has its source in
- 1:29His Son. Whoever has the Son has eternal
- 1:33life. Whoever does not have the Son
- 1:36does not possess eternal life. All right, I think sometimes we
- 1:44hear the phrase eternal life so much in Christian culture and
- 1:48immediately our minds just go to heaven someday after we die.
- 1:53And yes, praise Jesus that we do get to have the promise of
- 1:59eternity with him that brings so much joy and so much peace.
- 2:04But I also think that we miss the depth of what the Bible is
- 2:08saying here. If we simply reduce salvation to
- 2:12just securing our spot in heaven, and then we continue to
- 2:16live disconnected from God in our life.
- 2:19This passage says that life itself has its source in Jesus.
- 2:25Not just later, not just after death, but now.
- 2:30That means abundant life, peace, freedom, wholeness, a right
- 2:37relationship with God. All of its source is in Jesus.
- 2:43And I think for a lot of my life, I genuinely did believe in
- 2:47Jesus. I was raised in a Christian home
- 2:50and became a believer from a really young age.
- 2:53There's so much to praise God about that for.
- 2:56But if I'm being fully transparent, I didn't know him
- 2:59personally for a very long time. I called myself a Christian.
- 3:04I believed that Jesus Christ died for my sins and that I was
- 3:09saved. But I still lived mostly
- 3:11centered around myself, my emotions.
- 3:15I looked to the world's definition of fulfillment and
- 3:19just tried to survive life in my own strength.
- 3:23But there's a difference between professing Jesus and actually
- 3:29walking with him daily. And I say that graciously
- 3:33because I was that person. And you can tell when someone is
- 3:38truly walking with Jesus, abiding in him, not because they
- 3:44just become perfect overnight, but because their life, it
- 3:48begins changing from that day. Their desires begin to shift.
- 3:53Their speech is different. Priorities shift, conviction
- 3:58increases, and repentance becomes more normal.
- 4:03Holiness becomes something that you pursue because you love God,
- 4:08not because you're trying to earn him.
- 4:11Your real belief results in transformation, not perfection.
- 4:16I don't want y'all to hear perfection, but transformation.
- 4:21And I think what's hitting me lately is that Jesus did not
- 4:25just die so that we could go to heaven.
- 4:27One day He died and he rose again so that we could be
- 4:32reunited with the Father today, so his Spirit could dwell within
- 4:37us right now. Do we really understand that if
- 4:43you are a believer, the Spirit of the living God lives inside
- 4:47of you, and Jesus is alive right now, seated in heaven.
- 4:53He is living, He is breathing, he is drenched in victory, and
- 4:59His Spirit dwells in His people. So that is not just symbolic,
- 5:05that is a reality. And if his life is now our
- 5:09source, then why at times do we continue agreeing with death?
- 5:16Why do we consistently speak hopelessness over ourselves?
- 5:20We hear this through phrases like I will always struggle with
- 5:24blank, I'll always be anxious, I'm a people pleaser, I'll never
- 5:30be free, or this is just who I am.
- 5:34And I just want to ask, do you know who you're believing in?
- 5:39Because the same Jesus who conquered sin and death on this
- 5:43earth lives inside of you as a believer.
- 5:47And I want to say this carefully because I never want to minimize
- 5:51real pain or struggles that people are walking through on
- 5:54this side of eternity. Healing journeys are complex and
- 6:00there are struggles with mental health, but sanctification is a
- 6:05process and as believers our identity can no longer be rooted
- 6:10in bondage so we should not be speaking death as our identity
- 6:16anymore. 2nd Corinthians 5 verse 17 says that if anyone is in
- 6:21Christ they are a new creation and we see in Romans that it
- 6:26says the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in us.
- 6:32So we have been made righteous through Christ.
- 6:36He transferred his righteousness and holiness on to us by his
- 6:40sacrifice. Jesus is pure.
- 6:46Jesus lives at peace with the Father.
- 6:49He is fully loved by the Father. And so through him, by his
- 6:55blood, we are brought into that perfect relationship too.
- 7:00And it is not because we earned it.
- 7:03It is simply because of grace. So an emphasis on eternal life
- 7:10is not just OK, cool, I am now going to heaven.
- 7:15It is union with God. It's waking up every single day
- 7:20aware that you are not alone, that you have access to joy and
- 7:25peace right now no matter what your circumstances are, That you
- 7:30are able to walk in freedom, that you can pursue holiness.
- 7:34You can know God. Personally, I also think that it
- 7:40can be easy to get exhausted because we're still at times
- 7:44trying to earn what Jesus already offered freely.
- 7:48We get in a striving mindset. We work, we wait for someday, we
- 7:54worry about what's to come. Meanwhile, Jesus is saying I am
- 7:59your life now. Your life is not anchored in
- 8:05your money and your relationship status and what you look like in
- 8:10the mirror. It's not in how many likes you
- 8:13get on social media, not even in the perfect future version of
- 8:17yourself that you picture. It says he who has the Son has
- 8:24life has that is present tense not might have not eventually
- 8:30gets but right now. So I just want to ask you today,
- 8:35are you living like you actually possess the life of Jesus within
- 8:40you? Do you truly understand and know
- 8:45who you're believing in if you say you're a Christian because
- 8:49when you really do know him, your life cannot stay the same.
- 8:56I want to leave you with a couple reflection questions off
- 8:59of that. Number one, where have you been
- 9:02treating salvation as only a future promise instead of a
- 9:07present relationship with Jesus #2 what lies have you been
- 9:16speaking over yourself that don't align with the life and
- 9:20identity that you have been given in Christ?
- 9:24So with those things to think about, I want to go ahead and
- 9:27move into prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, I just
- 9:34thank You that You are so near to those who call on you.
- 9:40You are not distant. It is through Your sacrifice,
- 9:44Jesus, that we are brought near by the blood.
- 9:48Thank You that eternal life begins right now through
- 9:53relationship with you. God, I pray that you would renew
- 9:57our minds. Would you help us to stop
- 10:01agreeing with death statements and start believing what your
- 10:06word says about who we are in Christ Jesus.
- 10:10May we really abide in you every single day and not just claim
- 10:15you with our words, but in our actions in our everyday life.
- 10:20I pray for anyone who is listening to this podcast and
- 10:25might feel stuck. Stuck in sin, exhausted from
- 10:30striving, numb, maybe feeling anxious or distant from you.
- 10:37Would you remind them right now, Lord, that your spirit is alive
- 10:43within them? I pray that you would bring
- 10:47freedom where there is bondage and enslavement, peace where
- 10:52people are experiencing fear, healing where there is
- 10:57brokenness. And I pray that these listeners
- 11:01would experience such a deeper, more profound intimacy with you.
- 11:06Father, would you help us to live aware of the life that we
- 11:11simply receive in You? It is a gift, meaning we do not
- 11:17do anything to deserve it or to earn it.
- 11:20It is simply out of your generosity, your kindness, and
- 11:25your mercy and grace. Thank you for this Monday.
- 11:29Thank you for a new week and a new day.
- 11:33Thank you that your mercies are new every single morning.
- 11:37Great is your faithfulness. God, we ask all these things in
- 11:41Jesus name. Amen.
- 11:44OK guys, thank y'all so much for tuning in to today's episode.
- 11:48I'm praying that this encouraged you today and I will see y'all
- 11:52on tomorrow's podcast.
