Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: All right, good morning. Here we go. Headlines are brought
- 0:08Speaker 2: to you by Frostbrood Coors Light, as cold as the Rockies.
- 0:12Speaker 2: The Kraken are back tonight. Season opener on the road
- 0:17Speaker 2: against the Calgary Flames. Pug drop is at 6 p.m.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Airtime is at 5.30. With me, you're going to get
- 0:24Speaker 2: a handful of me tonight.
- 0:26Speaker 3: The captain?
- 0:27Speaker 2: You think I'm ready?
- 0:27Speaker 3: A handful of the captain?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Not just the coffee talking here, folks. Finally, it's hockey season.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 0:33Speaker 4: I feel like this is like the rabbit out of
- 0:35Speaker 4: the cage in a greyhound race right now.
- 0:36Speaker 2: You can finally let me out of the cage here, indeed.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Ever if it's you, Al Koniski, on the call at
- 0:41Speaker 2: Scotiabank Saddle Dome, which will also be the final ever
- 0:45Speaker 2: season opener at Scotiabank Saddle Dome. Don't forget that place
- 0:48Speaker 2: held the 88 Olympics, but they're going to tear that
- 0:50Speaker 2: thing down after this year and move into a brand
- 0:53Speaker 2: swanky new building right across the street. But I'm fired
- 0:57Speaker 2: up here for this, and I'll tell you why later,
- 0:59Speaker 2: not just because it's hockey season, but... There are kind
- 1:01Speaker 2: of some underlying themes of a growing Kraken team identity.
- 1:05Speaker 2: We'll get to that soon. Seahawks will host the Chargers
- 1:08Speaker 2: this weekend as they come off the road from what
- 1:11Speaker 2: was a disappointing loss to the Commanders. Julian Love practicing yesterday,
- 1:16Speaker 2: limited basis. Finally get to get him back, though, on
- 1:20Speaker 2: the field. Nicky Manwari, full participant at practice. Ty Okada
- 1:24Speaker 2: did not practice, in case you are wondering. Major League
- 1:27Speaker 2: Baseball postseason wild card games yesterday. The Phillies and the
- 1:31Speaker 2: Braves are making this one a wild one. Phillies beat
- 1:34Speaker 2: them for three. Winner take all game three coming up.
- 1:37Speaker 2: That series tied one game apiece. The White Sox swept
- 1:40Speaker 2: the Astros, as Greg Bell calls them, the trash cans.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of guys. Out
- 1:48Speaker 2: they go. Didn't even make it to October. You imagine
- 1:51Speaker 2: buying a sweatshirt that says, for Astros, nothing like October.
- 1:56Speaker 2: You don't even make it to October.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Yeah, those ones are the ones that usually get shipped
- 2:01Speaker 4: to countries that need clothes.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of guys. 7-3,
- 2:06Speaker 2: White Sox over the Astros. They sweep them in two.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yankees swept the Red Sox out of the postseason, beat
- 2:13Speaker 2: them 9-2 like a drum last night. Padres 4-1 over
- 2:16Speaker 2: the Cubs. They move on to the National League Division Series. MLS,
- 2:21Speaker 2: Sounders kicking off tonight against Sporting KC, 6-30. I believe
- 2:25Speaker 2: Danny Jackson is also on pregame for that one. You
- 2:28Speaker 2: can listen, by the way, to the game on Seattle
- 2:30Speaker 2: Soccer Radio tonight online or via the iHeartRadio app. I'll
- 2:35Speaker 2: let you go with the show. Well, Greg Belton needs
- 2:37Speaker 2: a day off because the NFL season's a long season,
- 2:40Speaker 2: and I don't know where he's residing, but I would
- 2:42Speaker 2: hope it's off the grid. Plus, we've got to get
- 2:44Speaker 2: to some NHL talk here for the Kraken. So, Greg,
- 2:46Speaker 2: I hope you're resting comfortably.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Yes, I believe he's still in the air right now.
- 2:50Speaker 4: He's going to a very important event.
- 2:53Speaker 2: He's got the Airbus bed all kicked back. The only
- 2:58Speaker 2: kind of Greg Bell treatment that you can maybe give
- 3:00Speaker 2: for an airline ride.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Cucumber slices on the eyes, do you think?
- 3:04Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I hope so.
- 3:05Speaker 2: You wouldn't know because you're first class.
- 3:07Speaker 4: I do get upgraded on my way to Spokane quite often.
- 3:11Speaker 3: So, yes.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I will never, ever complain about first class flights ever.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Rare for me, at least. But I mean, when I
- 3:18Speaker 2: can get them at least, you know, on the NHL
- 3:20Speaker 2: team plane. Oh, that's a different beast.
- 3:23Speaker 3: It is just, you know, it reminds me of that
- 3:26Speaker 3: Seinfeld episode. Like, I can't go back.
- 3:31Speaker 4: When he and Elaine are fighting over, you know, who
- 3:33Speaker 4: should get the first class seat and who should go
- 3:35Speaker 4: and coach.
- 3:36Speaker 5: Oh, good.
- 3:36Speaker 2: That was an all-timer.
- 3:37Speaker 6: You've never experienced it.
- 3:38Speaker 2: That was an all, all-timer. All right, you got Greg
- 3:41Speaker 2: Bells out, Mike Benton in for Greg today, Jessamyn on
- 3:44Speaker 2: the other side of the glass. A lot to get to, 10-20.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Al Kaniski will be reporting live from Calgary. The Kraken
- 3:52Speaker 2: are finally out of the mop balls, into the deep.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Season opener tonight against the Flames. We're going to get
- 4:00Speaker 2: Al's perspective on really how ready this team is because
- 4:03Speaker 2: it was a short preseason and how they can measure up.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Plus also 1045, we're going to shift gears a bit
- 4:09Speaker 2: here with the Mariners manager job, a big part of
- 4:13Speaker 2: the open conversation. There was only one name I have
- 4:18Speaker 2: for the job, and it is a win at all
- 4:22Speaker 2: costs proposition to get him here. I got that name
- 4:26Speaker 2: for you coming up at 1045. 11 a.m. Farron Lodge, EFTS,
- 4:30Speaker 2: and we're going to go around the horns. Seahawks, Kraken,
- 4:33Speaker 2: maybe a little bit of Vancouver Canucks because he is
- 4:36Speaker 2: from those parts. And we always love poking some holes
- 4:39Speaker 2: into Canucks land from around here.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Respectfully. You needled him.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Respectfully. Yeah, we're going to get to Farhan. Great conversation
- 4:47Speaker 2: coming up at 11 a.m. because the Seahawks admittedly licking
- 4:50Speaker 2: their wounds a bit off that loss to the commanders. But,
- 4:53Speaker 2: I mean, if you want to use a phrase, it's early.
- 4:55Speaker 2: It definitely is early, but we're going to get to him. Plus,
- 4:57Speaker 2: also 11.30. Talk Backs, get those in right now at
- 5:00Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app. And again, find the red mic icon.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Record what you want to record. Just keep it under
- 5:06Speaker 2: 30 seconds. We love to hear you. I love the impressions.
- 5:10Speaker 2: I want to hear more of them. I say this
- 5:12Speaker 2: every time. Get them in here. We're going to play
- 5:15Speaker 2: those back at 1130 again from the iHeartRadio app. 49451
- 5:20Speaker 2: Tacoma Dodge text line. Plus also Jessamine, the undefeated Jessamine's
- 5:24Speaker 2: got your pick for fact or fiction courtesy. Lucky Eagle Casino.
- 5:28Speaker 4: I'm not undefeated, but everyone's mine. But my winner, my
- 5:32Speaker 4: winner on my pick was a fiction pick and he
- 5:36Speaker 4: was our thousand dollar winner last week.
- 5:38Speaker 2: So I think you've got some happy folks who I
- 5:41Speaker 2: work with who might be siding with you for this
- 5:43Speaker 2: factor fiction. Yeah, I'm just saying.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Yep.
- 5:45Speaker 3: I am pretty excited.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I'm just saying.
- 5:47Speaker 3: 1135.
- 5:48Speaker 2: So that's all coming up at 1135. Kraken opening up tonight.
- 5:54Speaker 2: And again, we're going to get back to this. We
- 5:56Speaker 2: circled with this over and over and over. I mean,
- 5:59Speaker 2: this is a hockey team that just didn't make a
- 6:01Speaker 2: lot of moves. They made some important moves, but were
- 6:04Speaker 2: they going to be enough here to kind of fortify
- 6:06Speaker 2: this roster to get where they wanted to get to?
- 6:09Speaker 2: Not many folks are picking them to make the playoffs.
- 6:13Speaker 2: And that's understandable because there's expectation versus reality. And yet,
- 6:18Speaker 2: if you ask any guy in that room, that word
- 6:21Speaker 2: still comes up because there is some belief that despite
- 6:25Speaker 2: all the question marks that they have, can they get
- 6:28Speaker 2: a guy like Jared McCann to 40 goals? Can they
- 6:30Speaker 2: get Bobby McMahon to 30 to 40? Can Matty Beneers
- 6:33Speaker 2: take the next step? There is still belief that they're
- 6:36Speaker 2: going to be in this mix and they could very
- 6:38Speaker 2: well be. But again, the reality, the numbers say this
- 6:42Speaker 2: was an offensively starved team that last year stylistically had
- 6:47Speaker 2: no true top line forwards and a lot of guys
- 6:49Speaker 2: that you would play line two, line three. So a
- 6:53Speaker 2: lot of things have to go right. Matty Beneers, can
- 6:56Speaker 2: he get to 25 or 30 goals, maybe 70 points?
- 6:59Speaker 2: Can that make a difference? Jared McCann, can he get
- 7:02Speaker 2: to 30 or 40? Bobby McMahon, can he get to 40?
- 7:04Speaker 2: I mean, how much do you believe this? Tell me, 49451.
- 7:08Speaker 2: But the most important thing is the health of this
- 7:09Speaker 2: team because they are the sum of their parts. If
- 7:13Speaker 2: you have one guy go down, two guys go down
- 7:15Speaker 2: to the injury longer than a month. My goodness, does
- 7:18Speaker 2: that put a crimp into a lot of things from
- 7:22Speaker 2: Jared McCann to Vince Dunn to Brandon Montour? And most importantly,
- 7:26Speaker 2: I haven't gotten this far yet, Jess, but your goalies,
- 7:30Speaker 2: they've got to both be healthy. That's the most important thing.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Yeah, obviously. But I mean, they've always had a wealth of.
- 7:37Speaker 3: riches in that position, or they have for a while.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And let's also be fair. Joey Decord has developed now
- 7:43Speaker 2: into a legitimate number one goaltender. You ask anybody around
- 7:45Speaker 2: the league, he officially is in that category. But the
- 7:48Speaker 2: thing is, for me, you really can't overwork him, which
- 7:51Speaker 2: is why they still have Philip Grubauer. And to his credit,
- 7:54Speaker 2: his numbers were great. But ultimately, what's going to happen
- 7:57Speaker 2: here tonight against the Flames, I think is going to
- 7:59Speaker 2: be a test in toughness. Did anybody remember what happened
- 8:02Speaker 2: last time in preseason? And in case you went, huh?
- 8:07Speaker 2: Did you look at social media? It wasn't just all
- 8:10Speaker 2: over the place from the NHL National Circle. John Boy
- 8:13Speaker 2: picked up on this. With Viliota Vining coming in and
- 8:17Speaker 2: about Taron Brennan-Othman's head off because Othman went over the line,
- 8:21Speaker 2: running his mouth, chirping as they say in this game,
- 8:25Speaker 2: not just from that night but the previous night, a
- 8:27Speaker 2: bad hit that the officials said get lost to Othman.
- 8:32Speaker 2: And then Otto Weinen just had enough and just absolutely
- 8:36Speaker 2: pummeled him. And you have folks who are just crying
- 8:39Speaker 2: suspension all over social media on this thing. You know
- 8:42Speaker 2: what the NHL said? Nah, two grand final do. Two grand.
- 8:47Speaker 3: No suspension.
- 8:48Speaker 2: No suspension.
- 8:49Speaker 7: Nothing.
- 8:49Speaker 8: Nothing.
- 8:50Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 8:51Speaker 2: And must I remind you again? If you've watched this
- 8:55Speaker 2: matchup over the years, there was Martin Pospisil crashing into
- 8:59Speaker 2: a Kraken goaltender. There was Andrew Mangiapane pummeling Jared McCann
- 9:04Speaker 2: with no response from any teammates. I potentially, from what
- 9:10Speaker 2: I read at practice the other day, you usually skate
- 9:15Speaker 2: through lines one through four, and that kind of gives
- 9:18Speaker 2: you maybe a bit of a telltale sign with who
- 9:20Speaker 2: could play. You know what I saw in one line together?
- 9:23Speaker 2: Jacob Melanson, who has made enough of an impression that
- 9:27Speaker 2: he'll go in, mix things up, and even drop the
- 9:30Speaker 2: gloves if he has to. And newly acquired 6'9, tough guy,
- 9:36Speaker 2: drop the gloves, Curtis Douglas. We don't know yet who's
- 9:41Speaker 2: suiting up tonight for sure. But that was telltale. Because
- 9:45Speaker 2: if they're skating together in practice... One day before the
- 9:50Speaker 2: Kraken go up to Calgary and face a team that
- 9:52Speaker 2: has tried to push them around and bully them a
- 9:54Speaker 2: little bit. That, to me, is opening the door here
- 9:57Speaker 2: for a brand new era.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Isn't that what we've been wanting?
- 10:00Speaker 4: From the team exactly like we wanted just some you
- 10:04Speaker 4: know ass kicker yes out there for a long time
- 10:07Speaker 4: and it's that's not to say that there aren't but
- 10:09Speaker 4: it's been like across the line like let's If that's
- 10:13Speaker 4: the line, it makes me really excited.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Because if this team doesn't make the playoffs, and there
- 10:19Speaker 2: are some folks who have expectations of, I just want
- 10:21Speaker 2: to see the young players get better. Besides that, what
- 10:25Speaker 2: do you want? You want to see a team begin
- 10:28Speaker 2: to evolve with an identity. How many times have they
- 10:32Speaker 2: been pushed around for the last five years? The message
- 10:36Speaker 2: now being sent is no more. Not just Philly out
- 10:39Speaker 2: of Vine and jumping in in that preseason fight. Curtis Douglas,
- 10:44Speaker 2: go back and watch the TV broadcast. He had crazy
- 10:47Speaker 2: eyes coming out of his skull.
- 10:49Speaker 5: I love it.
- 10:49Speaker 4: A 6'9 guy.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Looking at the bench, taking numbers and saying, you're next,
- 10:54Speaker 2: you're next, you're next.
- 10:56Speaker 5: You know what?
- 10:56Speaker 3: I want to ask you, too.
- 10:58Speaker 4: I feel like maybe some leverage is lost considering that
- 11:01Speaker 4: height in hockey. Yeah.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Six foot nine.
- 11:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:05Speaker 3: How does someone have the dexterity.
- 11:08Speaker 2: To skate that well? And let's also be real. I mean,
- 11:10Speaker 2: he's a 12th to 13th forward, many are saying. And
- 11:14Speaker 2: it's fair because there are limitations with how you can
- 11:18Speaker 2: play him. You're not going to expect a guy like
- 11:20Speaker 2: that to play maybe 70 games or more, get 10
- 11:23Speaker 2: to 20 goals. He's in there for one job and
- 11:26Speaker 2: one job only.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Protection.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Because when you have a team that has him on
- 11:30Speaker 2: the ice or on the bench, that team collectively feels
- 11:33Speaker 2: five inches taller. They feel 10 pounds heavier. And confidence
- 11:37Speaker 2: grows where they can play a little bit meaner. That's
- 11:40Speaker 2: one big step here to evolving a team identity.
- 11:43Speaker 3: And I love that. They wanted to get tougher, is
- 11:46Speaker 3: what I take from that.
- 11:47Speaker 2: So I love the toughness. We're going to get to
- 11:49Speaker 2: Al Koniski talking about this. The Calgary Flames await, and
- 11:52Speaker 2: they're going to happen twice now, matter of fact, in
- 11:55Speaker 2: less than a week, because the Kraken will face them
- 11:57Speaker 2: at home coming up on Sunday to open up the
- 11:59Speaker 2: home part of the schedule. But let's hear it. 49451,
- 12:04Speaker 2: what do you think they need to make the playoffs here?
- 12:06Speaker 2: What's your standard? Do you want to see them get
- 12:08Speaker 2: above that bar for the playoffs or just begin to
- 12:10Speaker 2: evolve with the young kids and an identity? 49451. Seahawks
- 12:14Speaker 2: were two days out, or the three days out, beg
- 12:16Speaker 2: your pardon, hosting the Chargers on Sunday. That's going to
- 12:18Speaker 2: be a massive sports day here in Seattle. A little
- 12:22Speaker 2: bit of your dose of Seahawks Chargers in the afternoon,
- 12:24Speaker 2: then the Kraken for your dining and dancing pleasure at night.
- 12:28Speaker 2: And for a 33-31 loss. I mean, you're facing a
- 12:33Speaker 2: Charger team that's going to be coming in hurting collectively.
- 12:36Speaker 2: But again, one more loss, you can pretty much pin
- 12:38Speaker 2: curtains on them. So I'm going to get to Farhan
- 12:40Speaker 2: Lalji's conversation at 11 a.m. And we're going to ask,
- 12:45Speaker 2: how do they bounce back from this defensively? How does
- 12:47Speaker 2: Nicky McMurray fit into the picture? And what do we
- 12:50Speaker 2: make out of Jadarian Price and the handoffs he had
- 12:53Speaker 2: and the missteps he had as well with the football?
- 12:55Speaker 2: So that plus on the Mariners side, again, I said
- 12:58Speaker 2: I have one name. One name where it is win
- 13:01Speaker 2: at all costs and you look everywhere you can to
- 13:05Speaker 2: get this man in town because I believe he is
- 13:08Speaker 2: a man you need to push the right buttons and
- 13:11Speaker 2: get this team over the top and finally get to
- 13:14Speaker 2: the World Series here for the first time. Let's just
- 13:16Speaker 2: say he's got my vote. We'll talk about this coming
- 13:20Speaker 2: up at 1045. But again, it's a night at Calgary
- 13:23Speaker 2: going to get ugly. Al Kaneski will tell us yes
- 13:26Speaker 2: or no after this on 93.3 KJRFM. It's the Kraken
- 13:42Speaker 2: season opener. Don't miss our pregame tonight at 5.30. Buck
- 13:46Speaker 2: drops at 6. The Kraken and the Calgary Flames. And remember,
- 13:50Speaker 2: the Seattle Kraken are anchored here. Now back to your
- 13:54Speaker 2: home for Seattle Kraken hockey. Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
- 14:12Speaker 8: You know, the fight of our group sticking up for
- 14:14Speaker 8: each other. We obviously need way more of that.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Chip on the shoulder, I mean, yeah.
- 14:20Speaker 8: I mean, I think if you don't have a chip
- 14:21Speaker 8: on your shoulder, not making playoffs and, you know, thinking
- 14:25Speaker 8: that your group should be better, you definitely need to
- 14:28Speaker 8: be checking twice, you know. So, yes, we definitely need
- 14:31Speaker 8: to be thinking about, obviously... what we can do better,
- 14:35Speaker 8: the reasons why we were not in last year and
- 14:39Speaker 8: obviously fix that. I think the group has belief in
- 14:42Speaker 8: that we can change that and we've just got to
- 14:44Speaker 8: be consistent and playing the right way, playing hard, playing
- 14:47Speaker 8: for each other and obviously we don't need to be
- 14:50Speaker 8: fighting every single night but just that fight back, that
- 14:53Speaker 8: mentality of protecting each other but Protecting each other in
- 14:58Speaker 8: not just that way, but playing hard for each other
- 15:01Speaker 8: and just trying to get those wins.
- 15:03Speaker 2: That is defenseman Brandon Montour and his words from the
- 15:07Speaker 2: dressing room. Not last month, not last week, but yesterday.
- 15:11Speaker 2: So you tell me how fired up this team is
- 15:15Speaker 2: to get it going for game one of 84. We
- 15:17Speaker 2: have finally made it, hitting the ground, running Mike Benton
- 15:20Speaker 2: again for 84. In for Greg Bell, Jessamyn here as
- 15:22Speaker 2: well from the other side of the glass. Again, don't forget, 11.35,
- 15:25Speaker 2: Factor Fiction coming up, courtesy Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 15:28Speaker 2: But we're going to be flying into this one. 6 p.m.
- 15:31Speaker 2: puck drop here for the Kraken tonight. 5.30 airtime, I'll
- 15:35Speaker 2: be at Tom's Watch Bar. Without further ado, this guy's
- 15:38Speaker 2: in Calgary. That's Al Koniski joining us right now on
- 15:42Speaker 2: the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. And Al, when I begin to
- 15:45Speaker 2: think of where this team's got to go from a
- 15:47Speaker 2: top-line standpoint, that's a big conversation. The national scene's asking,
- 15:52Speaker 2: where's the beef? But I ask you, at least from dinner,
- 15:56Speaker 2: where's the beef? Did you treat yourself to Beef Wellington,
- 16:00Speaker 2: your specialty, last night? How'd it go? Did you do it?
- 16:03Speaker 5: Absolutely did do it. Yes!
- 16:07Speaker 7: No better... No better place to do it than High Steakhouse.
- 16:11Speaker 7: I enjoy visiting the nice Canadian steakhouse here in Calgary.
- 16:16Speaker 7: We do it in Winnipeg. We do it in Toronto.
- 16:19Speaker 7: There's a few of them across the board.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I believe we did the one in Winnipeg last year, correct? Together?
- 16:25Speaker 7: We did.
- 16:26Speaker 2: We did, yes. Yeah, you are the massive Beef Wellington guy.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I was finally going with the 12-ounce ribeye. I felt
- 16:35Speaker 2: as good as full for about two meals, but it's
- 16:37Speaker 2: good to finally get back into this. And off we
- 16:40Speaker 2: go here for game one of 84. This is going
- 16:43Speaker 2: to be the last time that the Kraken will play.
- 16:46Speaker 2: at least one of two times that they'll play at
- 16:48Speaker 2: Scotiabank Saddledome, and it's going to be over, it feels like,
- 16:51Speaker 2: in a hurry as far as this matchup. But this
- 16:53Speaker 2: is the last time that a building that historic is
- 16:56Speaker 2: going to be hosting hockey because it's going to be
- 16:58Speaker 2: gone by the end of the season, and the Flames
- 17:00Speaker 2: will get a brand-new shiny toy to... you know go
- 17:03Speaker 2: into move into and play right across the street this
- 17:06Speaker 2: next season so that's going to be a lot of
- 17:08Speaker 2: fun i love going to that building last year al
- 17:11Speaker 2: but i think again brings us back here to the
- 17:13Speaker 2: question road stops in the nhl what's your favorite nhl
- 17:16Speaker 2: road city here at this point.
- 17:19Speaker 7: Well, I mean, I guess you have to add some
- 17:22Speaker 7: context to that because if you're talking about sunshine, you're
- 17:25Speaker 7: obviously going to talk about Southern California stops or maybe Vegas.
- 17:29Speaker 7: If you're talking about food, Vegas is also a very
- 17:32Speaker 7: good one. But I also like the nostalgia of coming
- 17:35Speaker 7: into this building here in Calgary. This is one of
- 17:38Speaker 7: the oldest buildings, if not the oldest one in the league.
- 17:40Speaker 7: And I was just talking to Everett Fitzhugh on the
- 17:43Speaker 7: way in that It's kind of nice that an Uber
- 17:46Speaker 7: can drive you right up to the door and drop
- 17:48Speaker 7: you off and that there isn't a bag scan and
- 17:51Speaker 7: a wand. They just, you know, welcome you back in
- 17:53Speaker 7: like you're invited over to your friend's house for dinner.
- 17:56Speaker 7: That's all going to change next year in that new building.
- 17:59Speaker 7: I'm sure there'll be body scans and, you know, you'll
- 18:01Speaker 7: have to give blood to get into the building. So
- 18:03Speaker 7: it's nice to come into these nostalgic buildings, walking across
- 18:08Speaker 7: the top of the scoreboard, which... Calgary is the only
- 18:11Speaker 7: rink we're able to do that in. Oh, yes. I'm
- 18:13Speaker 7: sure that goes away in a brand-new building as well. So,
- 18:16Speaker 7: you know, I like the big cities. I like the
- 18:18Speaker 7: Southern California, sunny cities, and Florida as well. But I
- 18:22Speaker 7: also like the nostalgic ones, and this is definitely one
- 18:24Speaker 7: of those nostalgic ones.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Oh, I love the Southern California trips just for the
- 18:27Speaker 2: sake of it's not too far away from where I
- 18:29Speaker 2: went to school, and you just relish those trips. But, man,
- 18:33Speaker 2: the Saddledome just hits different.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:35Speaker 2: The old swinging catwalk. We're not going to get an
- 18:38Speaker 2: experience like that for much, much longer. But it's great
- 18:42Speaker 2: to have you out talking, cracking flames. Morning Skate's going
- 18:46Speaker 2: to be getting going here very soon. So we're going
- 18:48Speaker 2: to dive right here into things. What's your view from
- 18:51Speaker 2: where this team is at right now out of a
- 18:53Speaker 2: 3-1 preseason?
- 18:55Speaker 7: Yeah, listen, I think coming out of the preseason, you
- 18:59Speaker 7: certainly don't want to go 4-0. I don't think that's
- 19:01Speaker 7: good for the mindset. I think that this team had
- 19:03Speaker 7: some tight games. They had at least one game where.
- 19:05Speaker 5: They were down.
- 19:06Speaker 7: They had to battle back.
- 19:07Speaker 5: They had some overtimes, some shootouts.
- 19:09Speaker 7: So I think they had the right mix of situations
- 19:13Speaker 7: to get them ready for this game tonight. I think
- 19:16Speaker 7: that from a mindset standpoint... They're in a good place.
- 19:20Speaker 7: You'd like to see Maki Samuskiewicz in the lineup. He
- 19:22Speaker 7: won't be tonight, unfortunately. But having said that, I think
- 19:27Speaker 7: from the lineup I see, it's the right lineup to
- 19:30Speaker 7: go against this Flames team, which had some Flames in
- 19:33Speaker 7: the preseason, literally, figuratively, on the ice. And it should
- 19:38Speaker 7: be a good one tonight.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Billy Otto Vinen made the team, of course. He even
- 19:43Speaker 2: told us, too, like he was kind of surprised waking
- 19:45Speaker 2: up next morning and seeing him all over social media.
- 19:48Speaker 2: But I mean, man, that's what's happening. out of your shell.
- 19:50Speaker 2: And sending a message does him to Brennan Offman back
- 19:54Speaker 2: in that preseason game that, you know, in hockey terms
- 19:58Speaker 2: can be described nothing short of a gong show. But,
- 20:01Speaker 2: you know, I think maybe it was a step in
- 20:03Speaker 2: the right direction with where this team wants to go
- 20:06Speaker 2: on the toughness scale. Funny enough, Brennan Offman also made
- 20:11Speaker 2: the Flames roster. Who knows if they will play here
- 20:13Speaker 2: officially tonight. But what I found very curious yesterday at practice,
- 20:19Speaker 2: going through lines one through four, if that's telltale, line
- 20:24Speaker 2: four is Curtis Douglas, Freddie Gaudreau, and Jacob Melanson. How
- 20:30Speaker 2: likely do you think we will see fireworks tonight?
- 20:34Speaker 7: Well, you're going to see a fourth line, regardless of
- 20:37Speaker 7: who it is tonight, that's going to be expected to
- 20:39Speaker 7: go to battle here in this building. To be an
- 20:43Speaker 7: effective fourth line player, you can't give up anything offensively
- 20:47Speaker 7: to the other team. You've got to play solid defensively,
- 20:50Speaker 7: but you've also got to play physical. And if the
- 20:53Speaker 7: fourth line is the way it looks on a skate
- 20:56Speaker 7: yesterday that you described tonight, I think that's exactly what
- 20:59Speaker 7: that line will do.
- 21:01Speaker 2: You have six players at age 23 or younger who
- 21:04Speaker 2: made this team, and just about a couple of the
- 21:06Speaker 2: short of what GM Jason Botterill predicted several weeks back
- 21:11Speaker 2: with how young that they could easily go. I mean,
- 21:13Speaker 2: Jake O'Brien's also a part of this, though. I don't
- 21:15Speaker 2: think really so much he counts because of where he
- 21:17Speaker 2: is right now on the non-roster injured side here. But
- 21:22Speaker 2: what young player do you think has the most to
- 21:24Speaker 2: gain by taking the next step this season?
- 21:28Speaker 7: Well, I have to think about, uh, Berkeley cat. Um,
- 21:32Speaker 7: you know, he's been centering that third line with a
- 21:34Speaker 7: Ryan Winterton and Shane Wright. And I think that, you know, the, the,
- 21:38Speaker 7: the unlocking of Shane Wright is also part of that
- 21:41Speaker 7: Berkeley cat and story as well. Um, Ryan Winterton is, is,
- 21:45Speaker 7: is also part of that, that, that line. And the
- 21:48Speaker 7: thing about Ryan Winterton is that, uh, he can force
- 21:50Speaker 7: those other two guys to play faster because he's probably
- 21:53Speaker 7: the fastest.
- 21:53Speaker 5: Skater of those two.
- 21:55Speaker 7: So, um, You get a line of youth. You get
- 21:57Speaker 7: a line of talent that's centered by Bertha Catton. Bertha
- 22:00Speaker 7: Catton is the guy I'm keeping my eye on. I
- 22:03Speaker 7: want to see him make a big step forward this year.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Not just Berkley Catton, but I think also seeing the
- 22:10Speaker 2: younger players take the next step is a big piece
- 22:13Speaker 2: of what they need for their top line. As again,
- 22:16Speaker 2: Al Koniski joining us right now on the Beacon Plumbing
- 22:18Speaker 2: Hotline from Calgary. And the issue has always been now
- 22:20Speaker 2: that there really hasn't been a proven 1C, a proven
- 22:24Speaker 2: top-end score, a proven guy who can be the guy,
- 22:27Speaker 2: like in the tier... of Crosby, McKinnon, Austin Matthews, Connor McDavid,
- 22:32Speaker 2: and even now Macklin Celebrini. And granted, those guys don't
- 22:36Speaker 2: grow on trees. They're more rare than common because they're
- 22:40Speaker 2: generational talent. But I think framing it here in this sense,
- 22:44Speaker 2: there's got to be totality on this roster here from
- 22:48Speaker 2: top to bottom for this to go right. To you, though,
- 22:52Speaker 2: what's the bigger hurdle? Find a 40 goal guy out
- 22:54Speaker 2: of this or keep everybody healthy?
- 22:58Speaker 7: I think keeping everybody healthy is an important one because
- 23:01Speaker 7: I don't see a 40-goal guy in this lineup. Now,
- 23:05Speaker 7: before you hit the panic button, I do see a handful,
- 23:09Speaker 7: a small handful, maybe three, maybe four, guys that could
- 23:12Speaker 7: be pushing 30 goals this season. I think about guys
- 23:16Speaker 7: like Jared McCann, Matty Beneers, Bobby McMahon, Mackie Samuskevich. These
- 23:20Speaker 7: are all guys that could easily push 30 goals this season.
- 23:24Speaker 7: So I would say if this team can stay healthy,
- 23:28Speaker 7: And those four guys are pushing 30 goals this season.
- 23:31Speaker 7: I would take that over a 40 goal score.
- 23:33Speaker 2: I'm going to pose this question later here, Al, to
- 23:35Speaker 2: our friend Farhan Laji of TSN. But let's pretend if
- 23:40Speaker 2: Matty Beneers hits 30 goals in 70 points, how likely
- 23:44Speaker 2: is this team a playoff team?
- 23:47Speaker 7: Well, I think that's definitely a key ingredient to it
- 23:50Speaker 7: because I think that if he's doing that, the assists
- 23:54Speaker 7: that are on the assist column there are affecting his linemates'
- 23:57Speaker 7: goals as well. And so he's helping other guys hit
- 24:00Speaker 7: those marks that I just mentioned. So if Matty Beneers
- 24:03Speaker 7: is leading the way with those kind of stats, his
- 24:06Speaker 7: team's absolutely in the running for a playoff spot.
- 24:09Speaker 2: And with that being said, I mean, there's always been
- 24:11Speaker 2: the move that this team is always looking around here
- 24:14Speaker 2: to try to add more top-end talent. I mean, the
- 24:15Speaker 2: question was posed last year at the end of the
- 24:17Speaker 2: year that, you know, is this going to be a
- 24:19Speaker 2: rebuilding year? And the answer, you know, in roundabout terms
- 24:23Speaker 2: was no, that they're just simply building. So, yeah, the
- 24:26Speaker 2: whole Jason Robertson thing came into play. That fell apart.
- 24:29Speaker 2: And to be fair, not just here, which I think
- 24:31Speaker 2: is also a part of the unfair narrative, he also
- 24:33Speaker 2: turned down a trade reportedly to St. Louis and maybe
- 24:36Speaker 2: even New Jersey was in the mix as well.
- 24:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 2: You had Panarin fall through and maybe even Robert Thomas
- 24:41Speaker 2: as well. And then about two days ago, we saw
- 24:43Speaker 2: a guy that went, man, he would have fit so
- 24:47Speaker 2: well here. And that was Kirill Marchenko out of Columbus.
- 24:51Speaker 2: He was dealt to Toronto. The assumption is that, and
- 24:54Speaker 2: from what we've heard, Jason Botterill's always looking to add.
- 24:57Speaker 2: But I think the question now at this point, do
- 24:59Speaker 2: you have to customize or modify where you're looking to
- 25:03Speaker 2: acquire top-end talent? Because there's so much player empowerment with
- 25:08Speaker 2: where they're driving the bus to where they want to
- 25:10Speaker 2: go these days.
- 25:12Speaker 7: Yeah, there are just so many variables in a player deal.
- 25:15Speaker 7: It's not as simple as saying, hey, someone's available. If
- 25:18Speaker 7: I just offer the right thing from a player standpoint,
- 25:22Speaker 7: it's a done deal. So many times you're trying to
- 25:25Speaker 7: figure out what's in the mind of that player. What
- 25:27Speaker 7: are they looking for in an organization? What are they
- 25:29Speaker 7: looking for in a city? What are they looking for
- 25:32Speaker 7: in a coach and management? And if you... Mikey, it's
- 25:36Speaker 7: no different than when you go buy a car. That
- 25:39Speaker 7: car salesman is trying to figure out what problems they
- 25:42Speaker 7: can solve for you. You're like, hey, I need something
- 25:44Speaker 7: with two sliding doors on the side. Well, I got
- 25:47Speaker 7: a minivan for you. That player has problems that they're
- 25:52Speaker 7: not getting fixed in the city they're in. You figure
- 25:55Speaker 7: out what those problems are. You solve them for that player.
- 25:57Speaker 7: You're going to have that player on your team. So
- 25:59Speaker 7: it's not just about what can you pay him and
- 26:02Speaker 7: what can you offer in return. You've got to solve
- 26:03Speaker 7: those other problems as well.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Putting the spotlight back on tonight here for this first game.
- 26:08Speaker 2: And again, the Kraken will see Calgary again coming up
- 26:11Speaker 2: on Sunday for the home opener. I mean, Al, we
- 26:13Speaker 2: saw it for about the first two nights from the
- 26:15Speaker 2: NHL side with games already getting going out east for
- 26:18Speaker 2: the last two days. I mean, sloppy hockey reigns supreme
- 26:21Speaker 2: at this time of year because there's just still so
- 26:24Speaker 2: much that teams are trying to get right, perfect, even install.
- 26:28Speaker 2: You've got players maybe even banged up that aren't going
- 26:30Speaker 2: to play. Just look at Chicago and Conor Bedard. But,
- 26:33Speaker 2: I mean, from what we know, The Kraken want to
- 26:36Speaker 2: play fast. They want to play relentless. They want to
- 26:39Speaker 2: be that kind of team. They also had a power
- 26:41Speaker 2: play in the preseason that looked lights out. They had
- 26:45Speaker 2: a penalty kill also that looked better. But then again,
- 26:48Speaker 2: in the last preseason game showed some familiar and maybe
- 26:52Speaker 2: some alarming flaws. So what kind of game to you
- 26:55Speaker 2: do the Kraken have to bring tonight?
- 26:58Speaker 7: Yeah, I think that they've got to keep the mindset
- 27:02Speaker 7: of improving both of those in the back of their head.
- 27:04Speaker 7: And I think that Lane Lambert and his coaching staff
- 27:07Speaker 7: are doing just that. They know that the penalty kill
- 27:11Speaker 7: was second from the bottom of the league last year,
- 27:13Speaker 7: and it's going to get a lot better. They know
- 27:15Speaker 7: the power play has to start to be more effective.
- 27:17Speaker 7: And again, see above, if you've got a healthy squad,
- 27:21Speaker 7: you're able to staff that power play with the talent
- 27:24Speaker 7: that does improve those numbers. This is where it starts tonight, Mike.
- 27:28Speaker 7: They've got to get opportunities on the power play. They've
- 27:31Speaker 7: got to limit their opportunities in the penalty kill. A
- 27:33Speaker 7: lot of the identity of this team historically has been
- 27:37Speaker 7: Be a very disciplined team. Don't take penalties. But when
- 27:40Speaker 7: you do, they've got to get them killed off. So
- 27:44Speaker 7: one of the ways you kill them off is with
- 27:46Speaker 7: great goaltending as well. And you, Everett, and I have
- 27:48Speaker 7: talked about this, that a big part of this team's
- 27:51Speaker 7: success is between the pipes. So how do you get
- 27:53Speaker 7: a better penalty kill? You have better goaltending. It's not
- 27:56Speaker 7: just that, but goaltending is such a big part of
- 27:59Speaker 7: killing off penalties.
- 28:00Speaker 2: All right, we'll look for that. Also, we'll look to
- 28:03Speaker 2: hear if you brought the A-game suit or not for tonight.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Did you?
- 28:07Speaker 5: I absolutely did, Mike.
- 28:11Speaker 7: I'm ready to go. Attaboy.
- 28:12Speaker 2: I think the window pane's special. That takes care of
- 28:14Speaker 2: the job here for game one of 84 and game
- 28:16Speaker 2: one of the playoffs. And we can always, you know,
- 28:18Speaker 2: dream here. Maybe that's going to happen about, you know,
- 28:19Speaker 2: roughly six months down the road. But, hey, Al, appreciate you, man.
- 28:23Speaker 2: We'll catch you on the flip side. Looking forward to 530. And, hey, finally,
- 28:26Speaker 2: it's go time, my man. Thanks again. Can't wait.
- 28:29Speaker 7: You got it, Mikey B.
- 28:30Speaker 2: All right, that's Al Kodisky joining us here in the
- 28:32Speaker 2: Beacon Plumbing Hotline as the Kraken again just getting morning
- 28:36Speaker 2: skate underway in Calgary. That could maybe leave a few
- 28:41Speaker 2: more breadcrumbs with who could be in the lineup. We'll
- 28:44Speaker 2: look to see if starting goaltending reveals anything. Joey Decord,
- 28:49Speaker 2: Philip Grubauer pretty much had splitsville going on for the preseason,
- 28:53Speaker 2: but I wouldn't be surprised maybe if it is Decord
- 28:55Speaker 2: just based on the fact of where he was in
- 28:59Speaker 2: a totality for last season, the games he got as
- 29:02Speaker 2: well in preseason. He's the guy that's got to carry
- 29:06Speaker 2: this as much as he can before Philip Grubauer comes
- 29:09Speaker 2: in and fills in the blanks for a 1A and
- 29:12Speaker 2: 1B situation. But I go right back again, and we're
- 29:15Speaker 2: going to ask Farhan Lalji this question at about 11 a.m.
- 29:19Speaker 2: around our Seahawks conversation with the Seahawks right now, 2-1.
- 29:23Speaker 2: But again... The biggest issue is that you can look
- 29:28Speaker 2: at easily, you know, what are you doing to fill
- 29:30Speaker 2: in around the edges for this hockey team? Can you
- 29:32Speaker 2: improve goaltending? But again, it's finding a top-line guy. You
- 29:36Speaker 2: can trade for one, and to kind of add to
- 29:39Speaker 2: Al's point, that will help you, but what does every
- 29:45Speaker 2: team have in common with a top-line guy? They have
- 29:48Speaker 2: largely been developed from their own draft all the way
- 29:52Speaker 2: to present day, and Matty Beneers has got to be
- 29:55Speaker 2: that guy. Maybe he is right now from where he is.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Solid second-line guy on a Stanley Cup contending team. But
- 30:04Speaker 2: can he find a way here to take that next
- 30:07Speaker 2: step and take the jump?
- 30:09Speaker 3: I bought his.
- 30:09Speaker 4: Jersey for a reason because I thought he would be
- 30:12Speaker 4: the one that stuck.
- 30:14Speaker 2: And if he had, say, 30 goals or 70 points,
- 30:17Speaker 2: I am fully putting it on you for the good juju.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Oh, that is me.
- 30:22Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 30:23Speaker 3: My first game, I went in there. I was like,
- 30:26Speaker 3: I need a jersey. I'm buying number 10.
- 30:28Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 30:28Speaker 2: So it's 100 percent for four, nine, four or five.
- 30:30Speaker 10: One of me.
- 30:31Speaker 2: If you tell me if Maddie been here to score
- 30:33Speaker 2: 30 goals or get 70 points, will they make the playoffs? Four, nine,
- 30:35Speaker 2: four or five. One Tacoma Dodge text line. And again,
- 30:38Speaker 2: talk back. So we're taking those via the I heart
- 30:40Speaker 2: radio app. But again, this is a season opener that
- 30:45Speaker 2: I felt like an extra amount of juice just flowing
- 30:48Speaker 2: through my veins and The most probably ever since, I
- 30:52Speaker 2: would say, in three years.
- 30:53Speaker 3: I was going to say, isn't juice always flowing through
- 30:56Speaker 3: your veins?
- 30:56Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 30:57Speaker 2: I mean, also blame the coffee for you YouTubers. Yeah,
- 30:59Speaker 2: it's going down right now. But I just think of
- 31:04Speaker 2: how many questions this team had. And the biggest one
- 31:08Speaker 2: was maybe why weren't you adding more here to the roster?
- 31:12Speaker 2: And to be fair, there were some pretty important additions,
- 31:14Speaker 2: but why not more? For me, there's some extra level
- 31:17Speaker 2: of excitement because last year with Lane Lambert, new coach
- 31:22Speaker 2: coming in, you admittedly had players trying to drink info
- 31:26Speaker 2: like they were drinking out of a fire hydrant. Now
- 31:29Speaker 2: it feels different. They know what the system has to be.
- 31:33Speaker 2: They know what kind of hockey he wants them to play.
- 31:37Speaker 2: And they know what he wants them to do in
- 31:40Speaker 2: case they see a teammate who gets tuned up.
- 31:43Speaker 5: On the ice.
- 31:45Speaker 2: The toughness thing is a very important part of this.
- 31:48Speaker 2: It's not strategy, but it's culture.
- 31:51Speaker 3: That's what makes me so excited.
- 31:52Speaker 5: Yes.
- 31:53Speaker 4: It's just a little more physicality, a little more, I
- 31:57Speaker 4: don't like to use this word, but bring in the goon.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 32:01Speaker 2: We didn't see a lot of the Flames lineup that
- 32:03Speaker 2: they'll maybe suit up here for tonight. But one thing's
- 32:06Speaker 2: for sure, they're a young team. They're going to miss
- 32:08Speaker 2: the postseason. They're back in where the Canucks are right
- 32:11Speaker 2: now with trying to rebuild this thing. And they want
- 32:12Speaker 2: to get their young core up to speed when they
- 32:15Speaker 2: open this new building in about a year from now.
- 32:17Speaker 4: So this is a good exclamation point potential today.
- 32:20Speaker 2: And the point is they're not afraid to play bully hockey.
- 32:24Speaker 2: They're not afraid to go to the net, maybe a
- 32:26Speaker 2: bit overboard. And this is how Martin Pospisil injured a
- 32:28Speaker 2: goaltender about a couple of years ago, but it was
- 32:31Speaker 2: in his debut as well. Then also, I mentioned, you know, past...
- 32:36Speaker 2: Incidents with these two teams. Let's not forget also, Vince
- 32:40Speaker 2: Dunn took a pretty high hit about three years ago
- 32:42Speaker 2: that Dave Haxtell called garbage. Over and over and over again,
- 32:47Speaker 2: they had been the receptor of over-the-line hits, and now
- 32:53Speaker 2: it is time to push back. I can't wait for
- 32:56Speaker 2: this game for that reason. We'll see what they lay
- 33:00Speaker 2: out here as far as the toughness scale. Anyway, we're
- 33:03Speaker 2: going to get right back to things in just a
- 33:04Speaker 2: little bit. The Mariners, there is one manager they can have,
- 33:11Speaker 2: and it is the one I believe they need. I'll
- 33:14Speaker 2: tell you who it is next right here on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 33:32Speaker 2: All right, Al Kadeski joining us a few moments ago.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Big thanks to him as a Kraken again getting set
- 33:36Speaker 2: for the Flames tonight, 6 p.m. puck drop, 5.30 airtime.
- 33:39Speaker 2: By the way, I'll be at Tom's Watch Bar, so
- 33:41Speaker 2: please come on down and hang us with some unreal food.
- 33:43Speaker 3: There's no better hang than.
- 33:44Speaker 5: A Benton hang.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Unbelievable, yeah. I'm always down for fist bumps, for selfies.
- 33:50Speaker 2: You've known this now for about five years.
- 33:52Speaker 3: I've known it well.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Power to the people. Power to the people. Mariners are
- 33:58Speaker 2: going to get deeper and deeper into the offseason. Still
- 34:02Speaker 2: with the question of who's going to manage this ball club,
- 34:06Speaker 2: I've got one thing about this. When you have a
- 34:10Speaker 2: team that is as talented as they are, with a
- 34:12Speaker 2: pitching staff when they're at their best, is among the
- 34:15Speaker 2: best in the game. But a manager who can also
- 34:20Speaker 2: infuse extra accountability with a proven resume. Who do you want?
- 34:27Speaker 2: Who do you want right now? There are different directions
- 34:30Speaker 2: they can go. And there are several qualified names out there. Honest,
- 34:35Speaker 2: if you were to ask me, they'd check off a
- 34:36Speaker 2: ton of boxes. Beginning in Arizona with Tori Lovolo. I mean,
- 34:41Speaker 2: if you look back at his World Series job with
- 34:43Speaker 2: the Diamondbacks, Jess, in 2023, were they supposed to be there?
- 34:47Speaker 2: The answer is no. 86 wins. And Tori Lovolo got
- 34:52Speaker 2: them to the World Series. Now, he is, though, a
- 34:55Speaker 2: 500 manager. So is that going to be a bit
- 34:59Speaker 2: of a red flag for you, 49451, because he is
- 35:03Speaker 2: a safe candidate?
- 35:04Speaker 3: Would have been nice this year.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Maybe you could have given them that bump. Chris Negron,
- 35:10Speaker 2: Pirates bench coach. We know him from his Mariners organizational
- 35:15Speaker 2: ties as a part of this coaching staff. And I
- 35:18Speaker 2: want to point also the dial at a name named
- 35:20Speaker 2: Kai Correa, a bench coach right now for the Mets.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Maybe on the younger scale, but many are saying on
- 35:28Speaker 2: the up and coming scale.
- 35:30Speaker 4: And the one thing that I was at on Monday,
- 35:34Speaker 4: I was at the Jerry DePoto press conference. It's not
- 35:37Speaker 4: necessarily a prerequisite that they have managerial experience, but it
- 35:41Speaker 4: is preferred.
- 35:43Speaker 3: So I think we're looking at people who have managed.
- 35:45Speaker 2: So it is not a prerequisite.
- 35:47Speaker 3: It isn't necessarily, but it is preferred.
- 35:51Speaker 2: There is still maybe, I think, an undercurrent of where
- 35:54Speaker 2: he could fit. Because the resume covers everything where the
- 35:58Speaker 2: Mariners have apparently failed. Just from a bench coach standpoint,
- 36:01Speaker 2: an infield side, and we know how bad the infield
- 36:03Speaker 2: was last year. I mean, there's a local angle because
- 36:06Speaker 2: he played ball over at University of Puget Sound. But
- 36:10Speaker 2: the risk would be, in this case, and to your point, Jess,
- 36:13Speaker 2: it would be the third straight Mariners manager without a
- 36:16Speaker 2: full season contract. a big league managerial experience. That's the
- 36:20Speaker 2: red flag for me. So may I introduce to you
- 36:24Speaker 2: the one candidate who I believe is without full stop
- 36:29Speaker 2: the man that they need and the Mariners have to
- 36:32Speaker 2: pull out every stop to get him into town. He is,
- 36:36Speaker 2: I believe, a dream candidate. He is also a two-time
- 36:39Speaker 2: American League Manager of the Year. He is also a
- 36:43Speaker 2: guy who knows his coaching staff.
- 36:45Speaker 7: Why?
- 36:47Speaker 2: In the front office.
- 36:47Speaker 5: Why?
- 36:48Speaker 2: He was here back in 2023. So would you be
- 36:52Speaker 2: interested in Stephen Vogt as your next Mariners manager? You
- 36:58Speaker 2: tell me, because I caught up with Stephen Vogt about
- 37:01Speaker 2: a year ago. We've got some ties together here, and
- 37:05Speaker 2: that's not part of the picture here on this, but
- 37:08Speaker 2: I had to go back and dig this up because
- 37:11Speaker 2: you may be thinking, oh, well, I mean, Stephen Vaux,
- 37:13Speaker 2: I mean, how are you going to get him out
- 37:16Speaker 2: of Cleveland? Well, depending upon the money, let's just say
- 37:22Speaker 2: hometown roots run pretty, pretty deep. How deep right now? Well,
- 37:27Speaker 2: you tell me based on what he told me here
- 37:29Speaker 2: last year.
- 37:30Speaker 11: You know, I married my wife, Alyssa. She grew up
- 37:33Speaker 11: in Olympia, went to Capitol High School. We met at
- 37:35Speaker 11: Azusa Pacific University and We've lived here as a family
- 37:38Speaker 11: for 15 years now, so Washington State is home, Olympia
- 37:41Speaker 11: is home, and it always feels good to come back here.
- 37:44Speaker 2: When you can put your work situation into a family
- 37:48Speaker 2: situation and tie it all together within the bounds of
- 37:52Speaker 2: just a few miles rather than seven or several hundred miles,
- 37:59Speaker 2: isn't that a little bit easier for you and your job?
- 38:01Speaker 3: Well, yes, but... Benton, how does that happen?
- 38:04Speaker 2: There's a lot of transit that goes on back and
- 38:06Speaker 2: forth right now. I've known this between Steven Vogt and
- 38:09Speaker 2: getting to Cleveland and being back here where he still
- 38:12Speaker 2: lives with his wife, Alyssa, not too far away in Olympia.
- 38:15Speaker 3: Don't they still have a home here?
- 38:17Speaker 2: They have a home here. They live here in the offseason.
- 38:20Speaker 2: They are heavily involved also in their kids with youth
- 38:24Speaker 2: sports in this area. So you tell me, wouldn't this
- 38:28Speaker 2: be easier for him?
- 38:29Speaker 3: Well, I mean, it would.
- 38:30Speaker 4: But how does this happen logistically when it comes to acquiring?
- 38:34Speaker 2: I'm going to get to this because that's the big thing.
- 38:36Speaker 2: And again, this is where I get to. You have
- 38:39Speaker 2: to look at everything. A win at all costs mentality
- 38:45Speaker 2: to get him out of Cleveland. The question, though, is
- 38:48Speaker 2: would he fit here as manager based on the accountability?
- 38:52Speaker 2: I posed this here to him just several months ago
- 38:56Speaker 2: in that same vein. What have you learned in the
- 38:58Speaker 2: last few years about what it takes to be a
- 39:00Speaker 2: big league manager?
- 39:02Speaker 11: You have to be a phenomenal teammate. It's about the
- 39:04Speaker 11: people around you. You have to rely on everyone around
- 39:06Speaker 11: you to do their jobs and need to be there
- 39:09Speaker 11: to be their support system. You're not there to dictate
- 39:11Speaker 11: and tell them what to do. You're there to lean
- 39:13Speaker 11: in with them and be along for the ride because
- 39:16Speaker 11: everyone around you needs to do their job correctly in
- 39:19Speaker 11: order for you to be a good manager and how
- 39:21Speaker 11: you do that is developing close relationships and and really
- 39:24Speaker 11: just pushing them to be at their best at all.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Times now just in case you may have any qualms about, oh,
- 39:29Speaker 2: he's a player's manager. Oh, there's going to be no accountability. Well,
- 39:32Speaker 2: I mean, the man won two times American League Manager
- 39:34Speaker 2: of the Year, basically on a shoestring budget in Cleveland.
- 39:37Speaker 2: There is accountability that you can operate with when it
- 39:41Speaker 2: comes to being a player's manager. Basically, it's called pushing
- 39:44Speaker 2: the right buttons. And just take a look at this
- 39:46Speaker 2: managerial tree and tell me, is this resume pretty legit
- 39:50Speaker 2: with how he learned and how to push right buttons
- 39:52Speaker 2: in a clubhouse? The managers tied to Steven Vogt are this.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Bob Melvin, Mark Kotze, Tori Lovullo, Craig Council, Terry Francona,
- 40:04Speaker 2: who he took over for in Cleveland, and Bruce Bochy.
- 40:10Speaker 2: who without question, in my opinion, was the greatest manager
- 40:15Speaker 2: of Azera in taking as little talent as he had
- 40:19Speaker 2: and pushing the right buttons. He got three World Series
- 40:22Speaker 2: rings out of five years in San Francisco and took
- 40:26Speaker 2: a Rangers team that had no business being in the
- 40:29Speaker 2: World Series in 2023 and got one more ring out
- 40:32Speaker 2: of them. So the question that you just posed, how
- 40:36Speaker 2: does this get done? Without question, you got to make
- 40:39Speaker 2: a trade.
- 40:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:41Speaker 2: You got to make a trade. Presumably, he's got a
- 40:44Speaker 2: multi-year deal. This was reported that he signed something after 2025.
- 40:49Speaker 2: These are typically secret. Trades are rare, but they are possible.
- 40:54Speaker 3: It's happened.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Must I remind you also how hometown ties have a
- 40:59Speaker 2: lot to do with this? Do you remember Lou Piniella
- 41:02Speaker 2: for Randy Wynn? Nope. Back in 2002. And why? Because
- 41:06Speaker 2: Lou Piniella had a longing to go home. to Tampa Bay.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Home can be a big, big factor in swinging the
- 41:16Speaker 2: pendulum to get this done. You had Ozzie Guillen to
- 41:18Speaker 2: the White Sox or from White Sox to the Marlins
- 41:21Speaker 2: back in 2011. John Farrell, Blue Jays to the Red
- 41:24Speaker 2: Sox back in 2012. So, I mean, it's all presumed
- 41:27Speaker 2: here that the Guardians just have no motivation to move
- 41:30Speaker 2: on from him unless the prize is big enough for
- 41:34Speaker 2: a return. So are you willing to part maybe with
- 41:37Speaker 2: one of your starting pitchers? For Steven Vogt, A manager
- 41:41Speaker 2: who can restore accountability and get this team finally over
- 41:45Speaker 2: the hump 4-9-4-5-1. Will it take starting pitching to get
- 41:50Speaker 2: this done? Is that enough to bring in your dream candidate?
- 41:54Speaker 3: Yeah, what are you willing to sacrifice is the question.
- 41:56Speaker 2: Could be George Kirby. It could be Logan Gilbert also.
- 42:00Speaker 2: I thought about when the Randy win for Lou Piniella
- 42:03Speaker 2: trade happened. Similar analytics as far as F-War happened. Wynn
- 42:09Speaker 2: had that compared to Logan Gilbert. It may hurt to
- 42:13Speaker 2: give up somebody for this, but for a potential linchpin
- 42:17Speaker 2: that can push the right buttons and to get this
- 42:21Speaker 2: team to the land that one of our dear friends
- 42:24Speaker 2: at 1 p.m. said, I demand a World Series back
- 42:28Speaker 2: in April. There is clearly untapped potential that will require
- 42:33Speaker 2: another mind like his to fully unlock every door possible.
- 42:38Speaker 2: and put it into place. Steven votes my pick here
- 42:41Speaker 2: for this. But you tell me, 49451, Tacoma Dash text line,
- 42:45Speaker 2: also talkbacks via the iHeartRadio app. Mariners, you have one mission.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Bring him home. Up next, Farhan Lajji will talk Seahawks
- 42:56Speaker 2: and Kraken next year.
- 42:57Speaker 5: 93.3 KJRFM.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 43:11Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light, as cold as
- 43:16Speaker 2: the Rockies. Crack it open tonight in Calgary. 6 p.m.
- 43:19Speaker 2: puck drop, airtime 530. Yours truly, I'll join you from
- 43:22Speaker 2: Tom's Watch Bar. By the way, Everett Fitzhugh, Al Koniski
- 43:25Speaker 2: in the booth at Scotiabank. Saddle Dome, off we go
- 43:29Speaker 2: for game one of 84. The Seahawks prepping to host
- 43:31Speaker 2: the Chargers this weekend as they come up. That disappointing
- 43:35Speaker 2: loss to the Commanders. Julian Love practicing yesterday, limited basis.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Nicky Manwari, full participant in practice. Ty Okada did not practice.
- 43:43Speaker 2: And developing story from our own Greg Bell, who I
- 43:46Speaker 2: have no idea how he got this out on the plane,
- 43:48Speaker 2: but he did. Zach Charbonnet. The Seahawks will designate him
- 43:55Speaker 2: to return to practice while on the pup list. So
- 43:58Speaker 2: now a 21-day window is here when he can practice
- 44:02Speaker 2: without counting for the 53-man roster. He must miss at
- 44:06Speaker 2: least one more game before he could play. That is
- 44:10Speaker 2: a massive step for the Seahawks and their running game.
- 44:14Speaker 2: MLB postseason. Phillies over the Braves 4-3. That wild card
- 44:17Speaker 2: series tied one games apiece. White Sox swept the Astros. Boo-hoo.
- 44:22Speaker 2: Trash cans are out. 7-3 win. White Sox advance in
- 44:26Speaker 2: two games. Yankees swept the Red Sox in two. 9-2
- 44:29Speaker 2: victory last night. Padres swept the Cubs 4-1. And they
- 44:33Speaker 2: move on to the NLDS. Sounders against Sporting KC tonight. 6-30.
- 44:37Speaker 2: You can hear that game on the Seattle Soccer Radio
- 44:40Speaker 2: tonight online or via the iHeartRadio app. All right, on
- 44:44Speaker 2: to the show we go for on Logi. Okay, rolling
- 44:49Speaker 2: on now here to our big part of the show
- 44:51Speaker 2: because this guy joining us now every Thursday. Always appreciate
- 44:55Speaker 2: his insight. This is Farhan Lalji of TSN joining us
- 44:58Speaker 2: right now on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. And six degrees
- 45:02Speaker 2: of separation, I would say, here for this area because
- 45:05Speaker 2: this man has been deep into the weeds with the NHL,
- 45:09Speaker 2: with the NFL. We're firing the NHL finally up around
- 45:12Speaker 2: these parts, but still a lot to talk about here
- 45:15Speaker 2: from the Seahawks' side. He resides though. I believe not
- 45:18Speaker 2: too far away from the good ship Aquilini, AKA the
- 45:22Speaker 2: Vancouver Canucks far hot. How are you? How are things
- 45:25Speaker 2: up there? I missed the Canucks waters.
- 45:28Speaker 7: You had to tie me in with that.
- 45:30Speaker 5: Didn't you?
- 45:31Speaker 7: You had to tie me in like thing now.
- 45:35Speaker 5: I know Greg would never do that. Jessamine would never
- 45:39Speaker 5: do that. My goodness.
- 45:41Speaker 7: You were off the Christmas card list.
- 45:43Speaker 2: What's it going to happen for?
- 45:48Speaker 7: Well, like look, rivalries don't happen until teams get into
- 45:50Speaker 7: the playoffs.
- 45:51Speaker 5: That's going to take some time for both.
- 45:52Speaker 7: Of these teams, especially the one I'm closer to up
- 45:55Speaker 7: here in Vancouver. I will say this. It's a funner
- 45:58Speaker 7: group to be around. It's funner a word.
- 46:00Speaker 5: It is today.
- 46:01Speaker 7: They're just with the new president, the new GM, the
- 46:04Speaker 7: new head coach, there's just a different era of professionalism and,
- 46:08Speaker 7: and what they're trying to do culture wise. So it's,
- 46:10Speaker 7: They are better to cover and be around, which is
- 46:14Speaker 7: because when you're losing, you got to be good to
- 46:15Speaker 7: deal with because you can't be a.
- 46:17Speaker 5: Bad team and bad to deal with.
- 46:18Speaker 7: And they were certainly a lot of fun the other
- 46:20Speaker 7: night against Edmonton to open the season. If they can
- 46:23Speaker 7: play like that, regardless of whether they win or lose,
- 46:26Speaker 7: but just that level of effort. a little bit of offense,
- 46:29Speaker 7: just kind of sticking with it. They weren't the better
- 46:31Speaker 7: team that night, but they found a way to win.
- 46:32Speaker 7: If they can play with that kind of effort, I
- 46:35Speaker 7: think they'll be a lot of fun to watch this season,
- 46:37Speaker 7: which should be half the battle because they haven't been
- 46:39Speaker 7: fun for the last couple of years.
- 46:40Speaker 2: The NHL is sloppy hockey in Vancouver, but it is
- 46:43Speaker 2: anything can happen hockey as far as this month. And
- 46:47Speaker 2: that's what we saw. We'll see what breeds out of
- 46:50Speaker 2: the Kraken and Calgary Flames side of things here for tonight.
- 46:52Speaker 2: But hey, Always appreciate you doing this here with us,
- 46:55Speaker 2: and I'll work here for a few minutes to get
- 46:56Speaker 2: back on that Christmas card list. But before I get
- 47:00Speaker 2: back into the NFL side of things, Farhan, just one
- 47:04Speaker 2: more thing with the Canucks. The biggest difference now as
- 47:07Speaker 2: far as the feel around this organization, then say versus roughly,
- 47:12Speaker 2: you know, I would say... 10 to 15 years ago,
- 47:16Speaker 2: different times, different players, of course. But I mean, how
- 47:19Speaker 2: would you kind of pay the biggest difference as far
- 47:22Speaker 2: as where they are headed as far with a general
- 47:24Speaker 2: team direction?
- 47:27Speaker 7: Well, I mean, you know, 15 years ago, they were
- 47:29Speaker 7: actually coming out of a pretty good era, right? Getting
- 47:31Speaker 7: to the Stanley Cup final in 2011 and having a
- 47:33Speaker 7: couple of good seasons after that. And then after that,
- 47:36Speaker 7: they were kind of kidding themselves for a long time,
- 47:38Speaker 7: thinking that that window was still open and we still
- 47:40Speaker 7: have a chance to kind of recreate that.
- 47:41Speaker 5: We just need a couple of tweaks here and there.
- 47:44Speaker 5: But we could all see which way it was headed.
- 47:45Speaker 5: And eventually... Um, you know.
- 47:47Speaker 7: It took us a dozen years before they got to
- 47:49Speaker 7: the point where they were, they would use the word rebuild, right.
- 47:52Speaker 7: They would always talk around it a little bit and
- 47:54Speaker 7: they would just, you know, the messaging was always so awkward.
- 47:57Speaker 5: And I know they felt what's the big deal. It's
- 47:59Speaker 5: just a word.
- 48:00Speaker 7: Well, and that's kind of what we felt on the
- 48:01Speaker 7: media side. What's the big deal. It's just a word,
- 48:04Speaker 7: but messaging matters. And, you know, I, I think the
- 48:07Speaker 7: fan base here, the owner who you tied me in
- 48:10Speaker 7: with before the got you off the Christmas card, like, like,
- 48:13Speaker 7: the owner just wouldn't have it, right?
- 48:15Speaker 5: Like he wasn't going to allow a rebuild because he
- 48:18Speaker 5: wanted playoff revenue. And now that, so then they.
- 48:20Speaker 7: Spun their wheels and he still wasn't.
- 48:21Speaker 5: Getting playoff revenue.
- 48:23Speaker 7: So finally he decided to give in and I think
- 48:26Speaker 7: the market's ready for it, right? Like they just want
- 48:27Speaker 7: to see some direction. They want to see some vision.
- 48:30Speaker 7: They want to see a plan for something sustainable, not
- 48:32Speaker 7: just getting into the playoffs, like they did, you know,
- 48:35Speaker 7: three years ago and then have two bad years right
- 48:37Speaker 7: after that. So I think it's, you know, again, I
- 48:40Speaker 7: think there's just some excitement at, Let's try this.
- 48:44Speaker 5: Let's try something new and let's give these guys a chance.
- 48:47Speaker 7: Let's not worry about wins and losses and try to
- 48:51Speaker 7: develop and accumulate assets.
- 48:53Speaker 2: Farhan Lajji joining us right now on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline.
- 48:56Speaker 2: And it's funny how just mindset just dictates everything and
- 48:59Speaker 2: it dictates a lot. And that kind of goes without
- 49:01Speaker 2: saying here for the Seahawks side when They went through
- 49:04Speaker 2: this transition. It just kind of felt like a light
- 49:06Speaker 2: speed turnaround going from Pete Carroll to Mike McDonald and boom,
- 49:09Speaker 2: right back to getting the hands on the Lombardi trophy.
- 49:13Speaker 2: But they suffered their first loss in what feels like
- 49:16Speaker 2: in a long, long, long time. And to a team
- 49:19Speaker 2: that maybe exposed some concern with the commanders, there is
- 49:23Speaker 2: a turnover thing, but Farhan, I think to you, the
- 49:27Speaker 2: attention on the Seahawks right now, I mean, where did
- 49:29Speaker 2: things go wrong and how much of a level is
- 49:32Speaker 2: there a concern? Maybe you think with how turnovers are
- 49:35Speaker 2: factoring in with this football team.
- 49:38Speaker 7: I don't think they're going to be overly concerned. And
- 49:40Speaker 7: I say that because they lived this life a year ago, right?
- 49:43Speaker 5: Sandarno leading the league in turnovers, 14.
- 49:45Speaker 7: Interceptions, six fumbles, and yet they win 17 of 20 games,
- 49:49Speaker 7: you know, regularly. So I think that they believe they can.
- 49:54Speaker 5: Manage all of that.
- 49:55Speaker 7: I kind of want to give Darnold a bit of
- 49:57Speaker 7: a mulligan. The first interception wasn't really his fault, kind
- 49:59Speaker 7: of bouncing off an element.
- 50:01Speaker 5: The second one was really bad.
- 50:03Speaker 7: But at the same time, you kind of run this
- 50:05Speaker 7: risk a little bit when nobody plays in the preseason.
- 50:07Speaker 7: And for Sam Darnold, this was really game one, right?
- 50:10Speaker 3: Because.
- 50:10Speaker 7: You only play five games in their five plays in
- 50:13Speaker 7: that first game where he got hurt.
- 50:14Speaker 5: So this is his first meaningful action.
- 50:17Speaker 7: And it really wasn't Seattle Seahawks football, right? When Sam
- 50:21Speaker 7: Darnold has to throw the ball 45 times, I don't
- 50:23Speaker 7: think that's happened since he was a New York jet.
- 50:25Speaker 5: That's not a good thing.
- 50:26Speaker 7: And then I'm not saying that because he's a bad
- 50:28Speaker 7: quarterback and he's not, it's just a case of, they
- 50:31Speaker 7: want to play the game a certain way. Their identity
- 50:34Speaker 7: is to run.
- 50:35Speaker 2: The football and.
- 50:38Speaker 7: Action and, you know, run those West coast principles when
- 50:41Speaker 7: you're throwing 72% of the time.
- 50:43Speaker 5: In a game. And it was a game that was
- 50:45Speaker 5: generally a one score game, right?
- 50:47Speaker 7: Late after the pick six, it was a two score game,
- 50:49Speaker 7: but for the most part, it was a one score game,
- 50:51Speaker 7: but they couldn't do anything in the run game. So
- 50:53Speaker 7: when that happens, you put yourself in vulnerable territory. We're
- 50:56Speaker 7: not just talking about the fumbles.
- 50:58Speaker 5: It was just there.
- 50:59Speaker 7: Inability to effectively run the football outside of Judarian Price's
- 51:03Speaker 7: one fumble was very different than what we've seen from
- 51:05Speaker 7: this team a year ago.
- 51:06Speaker 5: And quite frankly, different from what we saw from this
- 51:08Speaker 5: team in game one and two.
- 51:09Speaker 2: And Judarian Price is going to be front and center
- 51:11Speaker 2: here of this, especially until Zach Charbonnet is back because
- 51:15Speaker 2: he had issues with taking care of the ball. Mike
- 51:17Speaker 2: McDonald says they're still going to feed him, but I mean, it,
- 51:22Speaker 2: I love the point that you made with preseason and
- 51:24Speaker 2: how this kind of factors in. Do you think it's
- 51:26Speaker 2: fair to even kind of look back and think, you know,
- 51:29Speaker 2: was it really fair to keep Price out of action
- 51:31Speaker 2: because he hasn't played football that long since coming out
- 51:35Speaker 2: of the college ranks? And here he is, as we're
- 51:37Speaker 2: still trying to see if he can get really dialed
- 51:40Speaker 2: up as RB1.
- 51:43Speaker 7: Yeah. Like I get it. I get why they did it.
- 51:46Speaker 7: And I think they did it because it was such
- 51:47Speaker 7: a thin running back room. They just didn't want to
- 51:49Speaker 7: take a chance that you've already got Charbonnet out. Now
- 51:51Speaker 7: you've got this guy, but it is tough because he
- 51:54Speaker 7: wasn't a full-time starter at Notre Dame. And now you say, okay,
- 51:57Speaker 7: you're going to be our starter. We're not going to
- 51:58Speaker 7: give you any preseason ramp up. So the first time
- 52:01Speaker 7: you feel professional football hits, you were the starting running
- 52:05Speaker 7: back in a regular season NFL game.
- 52:06Speaker 5: So, you know, they, they just.
- 52:08Speaker 7: Decided that we were going to deal with injury prevention
- 52:11Speaker 7: ahead of anything else and um it's the risk you
- 52:16Speaker 7: take but the same decisions honestly i probably would have
- 52:20Speaker 7: right like i probably would have done what they're doing
- 52:23Speaker 7: because you know it was it was a thin room
- 52:26Speaker 7: and price got hurt missed a week of practice during
- 52:29Speaker 7: training camp right so that also makes you a little bit.
- 52:31Speaker 5: Nervous and that's you know like.
- 52:33Speaker 7: It we might only have a certain amount of miles
- 52:36Speaker 7: for a guy that hasn't had a heavy workload all
- 52:38Speaker 7: the way through, which probably do need to be a
- 52:40Speaker 7: little bit more careful. So I think it made sense.
- 52:42Speaker 7: Ultimately it didn't work out, but you know, we are
- 52:45Speaker 7: where we are because of it. And, you know, and
- 52:47Speaker 7: I just, I think he's going to be okay, but
- 52:50Speaker 7: you know, I, it, it is, they, they ran the risk.
- 52:53Speaker 7: I would have made the same risk, but you know,
- 52:54Speaker 7: there is a downside to it. We're living it right now.
- 52:57Speaker 2: What was your biggest takeaway with Sam Darnold being back in?
- 53:03Speaker 7: I thought he had such a great command of the
- 53:04Speaker 7: offense and I thought he had to throw too much, right?
- 53:07Speaker 7: Like when you throw that much and you can't run
- 53:08Speaker 7: the ball, the play action game becomes less effective. The
- 53:11Speaker 7: chemistry with Jackson Smith and Jigbo is just off the charts, right?
- 53:14Speaker 7: I mean, what do you have? 37% of target share
- 53:17Speaker 7: in that game and has similar numbers all season. The
- 53:21Speaker 7: fact that there were plays where he was so tightly covered.
- 53:26Speaker 7: And yet Darnold fit it in there.
- 53:27Speaker 10: Right.
- 53:28Speaker 7: And he doesn't need much space to catch the ball.
- 53:30Speaker 7: And he did that. So I think other than the
- 53:32Speaker 7: one to throw, I was impressed with how he, how
- 53:36Speaker 7: he managed the game. You just don't want to be
- 53:37Speaker 7: in that situation where he's got to throw it 45 times.
- 53:40Speaker 7: You want to get him into the low thirties for it.
- 53:44Speaker 7: and get a little bit more efficient with the run game.
- 53:45Speaker 7: And I think Darnold will be better for it. But
- 53:48Speaker 7: given the fact that it was his first game and
- 53:50Speaker 7: on top of that, he ran the ball really well, right?
- 53:53Speaker 7: Like when he had to scramble and extend, I thought
- 53:56Speaker 7: he did a really good job with that for a
- 53:57Speaker 7: guy that's dealing with a glute injury.
- 53:59Speaker 2: Sam Darnall will be getting a crack now at the Chargers,
- 54:02Speaker 2: who are going to be as desperate, and I mean
- 54:05Speaker 2: desperate with a capital D, this week because you can
- 54:10Speaker 2: kind of make the sense that if they go 0-4,
- 54:12Speaker 2: they're done, lights out, it's curtains for them under Jim
- 54:17Speaker 2: Harbaugh may be here for this season. I think just
- 54:21Speaker 2: from a general standpoint, as far as who the Seahawks
- 54:25Speaker 2: are facing... How likely is this kind of facing a
- 54:29Speaker 2: wounded duck scenario with Justin Herbert, his deep ball throwing issues,
- 54:33Speaker 2: but maybe as far as what the Seahawks can do
- 54:35Speaker 2: from a defensive standpoint to take advantage of them?
- 54:40Speaker 7: Look, I think this is absolute must-win territory for the Chargers.
- 54:43Speaker 7: So wounded or not, they're going to be desperate. That
- 54:46Speaker 7: is one thing that's really clear. The NFL did them
- 54:49Speaker 7: a bit of a favor with their first two games.
- 54:51Speaker 7: They have not done them a favor with the rest
- 54:53Speaker 7: of the schedule. When you look at what they've got
- 54:54Speaker 7: coming up between Seattle, Kansas City, they've already played.
- 54:58Speaker 5: Buffalo, but Denver, is in trouble.
- 55:03Speaker 7: And I said at the start of the year, I
- 55:04Speaker 7: didn't think they were going to be a legitimate contender
- 55:06Speaker 7: in that division, that the.
- 55:08Speaker 5: Chiefs were going to make it back.
- 55:09Speaker 7: But the Chargers don't have offensive weapons outside of the quarterback, right?
- 55:13Speaker 7: Omari and Hampton hasn't, you know, he's not that guy
- 55:15Speaker 7: quite yet. You've got Ladd McConkie. You don't have additional
- 55:18Speaker 7: receivers that can be difference makers. I mean, Matt McConkie
- 55:21Speaker 7: should be a receiver too, not a wide receiver one.
- 55:24Speaker 7: And they're feeding him. You look at Quinton Johnson, he's
- 55:26Speaker 7: had drop issues throughout his career going back to TCU. And,
- 55:30Speaker 7: you know, big drop again at a third down situation
- 55:33Speaker 7: in that last game. So when you look at when
- 55:36Speaker 7: you look at how they're constructed, I think they're, they're
- 55:40Speaker 7: in real trouble. And when you, I look, I like
- 55:42Speaker 7: Mike McDaniel a lot. I think he's a very good
- 55:44Speaker 7: offensive mind and I thought he was going to bring
- 55:46Speaker 7: the best out of Justin Herbert. But the problem was,
- 55:48Speaker 7: you know, when you, when you run that type of offense,
- 55:51Speaker 7: what are you doing?
- 55:52Speaker 5: You're trying to find, you're trying to.
- 55:54Speaker 7: Create matchups with all the motion and misdirection and all
- 55:57Speaker 7: that eye candy, right? They want to run the ball first.
- 55:59Speaker 7: They haven't been able to run the ball and you
- 56:02Speaker 7: might be able to get you know, pick your guy
- 56:05Speaker 7: isolated because he's running orbit motion. But then what's he
- 56:08Speaker 7: going to do with it? Because he can't separate, right?
- 56:10Speaker 7: It's not Tyree kill that you're throwing the ball to.
- 56:12Speaker 7: It's not Jalen Waddle that you're throwing the ball to, right?
- 56:15Speaker 7: So that creates, it creates problems. And then with all
- 56:17Speaker 7: that motion and I was down there at training camp
- 56:19Speaker 7: and I thought they were handling it well, but 10
- 56:22Speaker 7: procedure penalties, which leaves the league by a wide margin
- 56:24Speaker 7: right now. So, you know, you run the risk of
- 56:27Speaker 7: those types of things as well when you're playing that
- 56:30Speaker 7: kind of offense. So, you know, there is kind of a,
- 56:32Speaker 7: I don't want to call it risk reward, but, you know,
- 56:35Speaker 7: there's kind of a cost-benefit analysis in this particular situation,
- 56:38Speaker 7: because it's not about progression reads and, you know, looking through,
- 56:42Speaker 7: you know, one, two to three, it's get this guy
- 56:45Speaker 7: in space and get in the ball real quick.
- 56:47Speaker 5: And that's kind of not how Justin Herbert plays either.
- 56:49Speaker 7: Right.
- 56:49Speaker 5: So I'm not sure it's proven to be a really
- 56:52Speaker 5: good fit. Do they go out and try to get somebody?
- 56:54Speaker 7: I heard they're trying to, there's some conversation around the
- 56:57Speaker 7: chargers and Tyreek Hill, not something that's going to affect
- 56:59Speaker 7: them this, this weekend in Seattle, but it tells you
- 57:02Speaker 7: where they're at in terms of just needing to find
- 57:05Speaker 7: some dudes.
- 57:05Speaker 5: Cause they don't have them.
- 57:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and to that point, our morning show made this.
- 57:09Speaker 2: It was a great point as far as how Mike
- 57:11Speaker 2: McDaniel and Justin Herbert could be the odd couple. And
- 57:14Speaker 2: let's just say Mike McDaniel's an acquired taste and Justin
- 57:17Speaker 2: Herbert is still trying to acquire him really at this point.
- 57:20Speaker 2: But maybe a defense that he'll face with Nicky Manwari.
- 57:24Speaker 2: How important have we learned as far as what Eamon
- 57:28Speaker 2: Morey means here to this defense for this season. And
- 57:31Speaker 2: I think in your eyes, Farhan, how many snaps could
- 57:34Speaker 2: he maybe get as they kind of ease him back
- 57:36Speaker 2: after this last week?
- 57:40Speaker 7: Yeah, I think they've got to get him to a
- 57:42Speaker 7: point of full load, right? He went from nine in
- 57:44Speaker 7: the first game to, I think it was, what, 52%,
- 57:46Speaker 7: 30-some-odd plays in the second game.
- 57:48Speaker 5: And it was not that. It was just kind of
- 57:50Speaker 5: how they were using him, right?
- 57:52Speaker 7: They weren't really taking advantage of everything he did a
- 57:55Speaker 7: year ago, right? He was pretty much playing at the
- 57:57Speaker 7: line of scrimmage. He was dropping into coverage a lot. And,
- 58:00Speaker 7: you know, they need to allow him to be that
- 58:03Speaker 7: dynamic playmaker. And talking to him yesterday, it feels like
- 58:07Speaker 7: he's ready, that he's hungry and wants that role again.
- 58:10Speaker 7: So they need to put him in that role so
- 58:11Speaker 7: they can be a little bit more multiple. I don't
- 58:13Speaker 7: want to be too down on what Seattle's defense did
- 58:16Speaker 7: in this last game because Seattle Well, the reality of
- 58:19Speaker 7: it is they didn't give up 33 points. They gave
- 58:21Speaker 7: up 26 because it was a pick six involved there.
- 58:23Speaker 7: And on top of that, they held Washington to three
- 58:26Speaker 7: for 13 on third down or yards per play, which
- 58:29Speaker 7: is a pretty good number. They were able to pressure
- 58:31Speaker 7: quarterback 43 percent of the time while blitzing only 17
- 58:34Speaker 7: percent of the time. So they didn't have to rely
- 58:36Speaker 7: on the blitz to get the pressure that they wanted. So,
- 58:38Speaker 7: you know, you look at a Chargers team right now
- 58:40Speaker 7: that's wounded in their interior defense.
- 58:42Speaker 5: Offensive line. So you might not need to do a.
- 58:45Speaker 7: Lot of exotic things to get the pressure that you
- 58:47Speaker 7: want to get. So, you know, were there a couple
- 58:49Speaker 7: of like in the second half, I thought they improved
- 58:51Speaker 7: a lot. That final drive where, where Mariota checked into
- 58:55Speaker 7: that jet sweep and they were able to get around
- 58:57Speaker 7: the edge on third and long and, and convert there,
- 58:59Speaker 7: you know, you'd love to have that back, but they
- 59:01Speaker 7: kind of guessed right. And, um, you know, when he
- 59:04Speaker 7: pulled the ball on the zone, read and kept the
- 59:05Speaker 7: ball and ice the game, you know, you want to
- 59:07Speaker 7: be able to do that, but you kind of get
- 59:08Speaker 7: why they were kind of going for it. it there defensively.
- 59:11Speaker 7: So again, I just, I don't think they were as
- 59:14Speaker 7: bad defensively as what that number looks like. And I
- 59:17Speaker 7: think they're going to be fine against an offense. That's
- 59:20Speaker 7: really trying to find itself right now.
- 59:22Speaker 2: Farhan what's more telling to you, the Niners at three
- 59:25Speaker 2: and O or the Rams at one and two.
- 59:28Speaker 7: Yeah, the Rams are surprising, right? And actually, to be honest,
- 59:31Speaker 7: both are because I did think that the injuries that
- 59:34Speaker 7: the Niners were dealing with were going to affect them
- 59:36Speaker 7: a little bit more earlier.
- 59:36Speaker 5: Now, you know, you're going to be without Nick Bosa
- 59:38Speaker 5: for a little bit. We'll see what that looks like
- 59:40Speaker 5: this week.
- 59:40Speaker 7: But so, yeah, I'm not sure which one surprises me more.
- 59:44Speaker 5: I think when we did our.
- 59:45Speaker 7: Preseason prognostications, I don't think any of us expected Miles
- 59:48Speaker 7: Garrett to be hurt that quickly. Yeah. But obviously he
- 59:51Speaker 7: was dealing with a lot during training camp. And one
- 59:54Speaker 7: of the things that I find absolutely bizarre with the
- 59:56Speaker 7: Rams right now, why would you invest $ 45 million in
- 1:00:01Speaker 7: two corners, Trent McDuffie and Jalen Watson, and you play
- 1:00:04Speaker 7: zone as much as you're playing it?
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: Right now like what are you.
- 1:00:07Speaker 7: Doing especially on the third down in those looks so
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: I think I'm obviously really impressed with San Francisco I
- 1:00:14Speaker 7: didn't think they'd be a legitimate contender at this stage
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: well you know we'll see what it looks like as
- 1:00:19Speaker 7: the schedule gets a little bit tougher for them but
- 1:00:21Speaker 7: Brock Purdy's playing at a incredibly high level so you
- 1:00:24Speaker 7: know good for him but you know what we'll see
- 1:00:27Speaker 7: right like for the both of these teams I think
- 1:00:29Speaker 7: sustainability is going to be the key I don't think
- 1:00:31Speaker 7: the Rams are going to be this bad for so
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: long and I think the Niners at some point will
- 1:00:34Speaker 7: come down to earth to.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: A point Farhan Laji joining us right now on the
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Going to be a crazy Sunday here
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: with the Seahawks and Chargers duking it out. And then
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: you have all of a sudden Seattle Sports' landscape transitioning
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: right into the Kraken and the Flames here for the
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: Kraken home opener. So if you love to party, you
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: better be around town all day long. It will be
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: a 5 p.m. puck drop. And I think when we
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: look at the Kraken Farhan in the same eyes as
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: the Canucks, there's that transition period we've been discussing. The
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: Kraken don't want to use the word rebuild. They just
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: prefer the word, you know, build here at this point.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: So I think from a Pacific Division standpoint, you know,
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: you had Connor McDavid calling this a pillow fight last year.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: The Flames won't do much, maybe. The Canucks have fully
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: admitted that they're into a rebuild. Where do you see
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: the Kraken fitting into this picture for this season?
- 1:01:27Speaker 7: Well, the Kraken are going to have to get a
- 1:01:29Speaker 7: little bit more out of some of these younger players.
- 1:01:31Speaker 7: They're going to have to ascend to a slightly higher level, right?
- 1:01:34Speaker 7: I mean, you've got Shane Wright. I think there was
- 1:01:36Speaker 7: so much expectations around him coming into his career. And
- 1:01:39Speaker 7: then he has the good year two years ago, and
- 1:01:41Speaker 7: then he takes a bit of a step back last year.
- 1:01:43Speaker 7: And then you hear his name in trade talk and
- 1:01:45Speaker 7: things like that. So I know that there's some nerves
- 1:01:48Speaker 7: because they acquired assets in him and Matty Beneers. But
- 1:01:52Speaker 7: are they the level of player that they want right now?
- 1:01:55Speaker 7: So I think both of them are capable of a
- 1:01:56Speaker 7: little bit more. And then I want to see how
- 1:02:00Speaker 7: a guy like Mackie Samaskevich, who they picked up from Florida,
- 1:02:05Speaker 7: what he turns into. Because he's a guy that's been
- 1:02:07Speaker 7: a bottom six guy. He's produced an okay clip, but
- 1:02:10Speaker 7: now they're paying him and they want him to be
- 1:02:11Speaker 7: a different player.
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: And I'm not sure what he really is, right?
- 1:02:16Speaker 7: Because, yeah, you think he's going to score more with
- 1:02:18Speaker 7: more opportunity, but you're also going to wind up with...
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: more difficult matchups right so i want to see what
- 1:02:23Speaker 7: he does in a in a bigger role right now
- 1:02:27Speaker 7: because um you know i think there's some question marks
- 1:02:30Speaker 7: there right so i think they've got some good young
- 1:02:31Speaker 7: talent i think their defense is a little bit in
- 1:02:34Speaker 7: transition right you still have montour and larson as kind
- 1:02:36Speaker 7: of your main guys and vince dunn none of those
- 1:02:38Speaker 7: guys are getting any younger right so they've got to
- 1:02:41Speaker 7: figure that out and um you know they're going to
- 1:02:43Speaker 7: require a lot from the goaltending right which was up
- 1:02:45Speaker 7: and down last year so i think there's some um Uh,
- 1:02:48Speaker 7: I think there's some, uh, challenges there, but I think
- 1:02:51Speaker 7: there's some talent and some ability there as well. Right?
- 1:02:53Speaker 7: Like they, they're, they're probably a year or two ahead
- 1:02:55Speaker 7: of the Canucks, right? Because their core players are in
- 1:02:58Speaker 7: their early twenties, whereas the top players are younger than that.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: So, um, you know, but like, they're going to be
- 1:03:05Speaker 5: battling for the eighth spot, right?
- 1:03:06Speaker 7: Like they're not going to be, they're not going to
- 1:03:08Speaker 7: be battling for the division lead or anything like that.
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: They're going to be battling for, you know, the final
- 1:03:12Speaker 7: playoff spot. I think they're capable, but they're going.
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: To need to be better in goal.
- 1:03:16Speaker 7: They're going to need to be better on their special
- 1:03:17Speaker 7: teams and maybe get, you know, 5% more out of
- 1:03:20Speaker 7: some of their top players.
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: A big part of the conversation, a big part is
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: still the lack of a true superstar player. And we're
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: talking in level of production. That's been proven. So let's
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: try this exercise on for size here, Farhan. If Matty
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: Beneers has 30 goals and 70 points, do you think
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: they are a playoff team?
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: I do. Yep.
- 1:03:43Speaker 7: You know, and I think if he does that, he
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: probably drags Shane Wright along with him because a certain
- 1:03:47Speaker 7: amount of that is power play points, right? And so
- 1:03:49Speaker 7: then they can get more, a little bit more out
- 1:03:51Speaker 7: of their special teams. So I think if they can
- 1:03:53Speaker 7: get him to that number, I think you're probably going
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: to get a bit more out of Shane Wright as well.
- 1:03:56Speaker 7: And now you can, you can get close to that
- 1:03:59Speaker 7: eight spot, but yeah, 70 points is probably.
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: The right number.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: So cheers here to the first Kraken and Canucks matchup
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: very soon. Are we back at the Christmas card list now, Farhan?
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: You are.
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: We just got to get these two teams to play.
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: And we got to, you know, we got to get
- 1:04:13Speaker 7: them to play in the playoffs at some point. And
- 1:04:14Speaker 7: the problem with that is one of them has to
- 1:04:16Speaker 7: like win the division and for the, you know, to
- 1:04:19Speaker 7: face the other team. I think they're so far from that,
- 1:04:21Speaker 7: but right. You know, rivalries are always built in the playoffs.
- 1:04:23Speaker 7: So hopefully they can get there at some point.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: Man can dream. Man can dream.
- 1:04:26Speaker 7: Farhan.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: Hey, appreciate this. We'll talk to you soon again. Appreciate you.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: That's Farhan Lalji joining us. Talk back. Test just takes
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: the reins for a factor of fiction up next on 93,
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: three KJRFM.
- 1:04:49Speaker 12: In Lou Piniella's last game I recall I believe that
- 1:04:52Speaker 12: he started Jay Buhner in right field now that was
- 1:04:55Speaker 12: the kind of choice that sort of player-centric choice that
- 1:04:58Speaker 12: is embodies Dan Wilson's management Lou Piniella screwed up.
- 1:05:05Speaker 6: Okay and it was good.
- 1:05:06Speaker 12: That we traded him finally getting a left fielder but
- 1:05:11Speaker 12: the managers don't make a difference. No, no on vote.
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: No, we don't trade a pitcher.
- 1:05:18Speaker 13: Somebody mentioned yesterday that they wanted to see Jay Buhner
- 1:05:21Speaker 13: as the Mariners' new manager.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: That's ridiculous.
- 1:05:25Speaker 13: But I could totally see Jay Buhner as an assistant
- 1:05:29Speaker 13: bench coach whose only job is to play pranks in
- 1:05:33Speaker 13: the dugout and locker room and argue with the umpires.
- 1:05:36Speaker 13: I mean, that'd be really cool to see Jay throw
- 1:05:39Speaker 13: in his hat, kick in the dirt, and Taking one
- 1:05:42Speaker 13: for the team so the manager can stay in the game.
- 1:05:46Speaker 10: Still going to watch baseball, even though the Mariners underperformed
- 1:05:50Speaker 10: greatly and didn't do a damn thing. But it gets
- 1:05:55Speaker 10: me to thinking how the Yankees are playing without Judge
- 1:06:00Speaker 10: and how Cal got screwed last year in the MVP voting.
- 1:06:04Speaker 10: It's not MPP, most popular player. It's most valuable. They're
- 1:06:08Speaker 10: winning without his ass.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: Oh, not only that also, but I'll point out to you,
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: you're watching Padres Cubs. And may I remind you of
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: a player by the name of Ty France and how
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: he's doing.
- 1:06:18Speaker 6: I know.
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: Such a nice dude, too.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: I wonder what it would have liked to have a
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: guy like Ty France up here. Oh, wait, he was
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: already here.
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: Yeah, we had that. We had our chance.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: Chance with France. 49451, Tacoma Dodge text line. 714 said, yes,
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: trade for Steven Vogt, no brainer. I would start by
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: offering a prospect, but if needed, I would part ways
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: with George Kirby or even Logan Gilbert. We are bound
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: to lose one of them anyway, so let's get a
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: proven manager in return. 206 saying trading one of our pitchers, starters,
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: for nothing more than a manager would be incredibly careless
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: and stupid no matter who it is. At this point,
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: I disagree. Starting pitching, yes, I see the value.
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: But again, we had that value for so long.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: And where did it get us? Everywhere from injuries to piggybacks.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: I mean, this is a button pushing issue. It's not
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: the only issue, but it's a button pushing issue.
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: And who is pushing those.
- 1:07:20Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:07:22Speaker 7: 206.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: 206 wants Jerry as a part of the trade package.
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: I have a.
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: Feeling that it's not going to be a great return
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: on investment on that.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:33Speaker 7: 360.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: Some water resident. My daughter played basketball with Stephen Vogt
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: and Stephen's wife. He would come to all the games.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: Most unassuming player you could imagine was very gracious, courteous
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: to everyone around him. I would trade Kirby for him,
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: by the way. I mean, the hometown thing's a real thing.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: If you can make it work, the hometown thing's a
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: real thing. So, yeah, Stephen Vogt gets my vote, but
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: a lot coming in here on the text line, the 49451.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: Very quick, 206 of Matty Beneers puts up 30. Fine,
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: but we haven't seen that next step that he was
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: projected for. Is he the Kraken version of Julio? Just
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: a really good player at this point. That from the 206.
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: Very popular, too. On to Fact or Fiction now.
- 1:08:20Speaker 9: We're set to go glad you're with us it's your
- 1:08:22Speaker 9: shot at our weekly thousand bucks and the ten thousand

- 1:08:41Speaker 2: Hey you want to win a thousand bucks i know
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: you do This is your chance to jump in right now. Again,
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: Factor Fiction presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. We're

- 1:08:56Speaker 2: And again, we make a pick based on an upcoming
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: college football game. or a pro game either against a
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: spread or the total over under and again you dear
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: friend you dear listener you dear youtube watcher have 12
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: minutes here to text fact if you agree with the
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: pick or fiction if you disagree with the pick once
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: again Weekly winner, one randomly selected entrant here from the pool,
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: for correct guesses, will be drawn to win $ 1, 000. Again,
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: all you got to do is just text FACT to
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: 49451 or FICTION to 49451. FACT if you agree, FICTION
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: if you disagree. And without further ado... Jessamyn, you got
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: the reins?
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: It is my pick today. And I always go NFL.
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: And I am taking Detroit minus three and a half
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: at the Panthers. And I just believe a lot more
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: in Detroit than what has been shown.
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: I believe less in the Panthers.
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: They got absolutely hammered by the Bears in week one.
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: I mean, that was a basketball game. 59 to 37.
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: And then, you know, the Falcons are whatever they, they
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: smoke them.
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: That's fine. But it only took them. They only beat
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: the Browns. I'm sorry.
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: They lost the Browns in a three point game in
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: that was in Cleveland. So I'm looking at the lions
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: to go in there. So I'm talking from the Panther
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: side of things. I'm looking for the.
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: Lions to go in there and absolutely demolish them by
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: more than a field goal.
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: They're going to win by more than, Then a touchdown
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: or a touchdown or more, I should say. Yeah, I
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: just I don't see it. I mean, I know that
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: they didn't have the greatest go against the Jets, which
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: is my team who I picked against last week.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: But I just got through it.
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: Yeah, we got through it. Thank you, Pete Carroll. We
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: got through it. I think the Lions are going to
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: break it open in this game. I mean, this is
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: the first quarter of the season. This is the final
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: game of the first quarter of the season.
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: And I think that they're just going to demolish the Panthers.
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: I really do. I don't care if it's on the road.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: So your pick is the Lions at.
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: At the Panthers, minus three.
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: Minus three and a half. Just as the Lions at
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: minus three and a half. Do you like the pick?
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: Text FACT now to 49451. If you hate the pick,
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: text FICTION to 49451. Once again, you have 12 minutes
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: starting now to get your entry in. Just as the
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: Lions at minus three and a half again. If you
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: like it, text FACT to 49451. If you don't like it,
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: text FICTION to 49451. I mean, hey, for me, Carolina's
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: got their top two cornerbacks out. J.C. Horn, Mike Jackson.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Horn's one of the best around. Dave Canales said, quote,
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: there's no replacing J.C.
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: Horn.
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: Well, there isn't. He's phenomenal.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: And now you've got to fill the void at cornerback,
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: and now you've got to cover two dudes named Sam
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: Brown and Williams. Good luck. Good luck. This is a
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: Lions game here. I mean, Carolina's got mounting injuries where
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: it just shows that they're just biting off way more
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: than that they can chew at this point.
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: I'm surprised that the line is that close, to be honest.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: Yeah, me too.
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: Three and a half points, especially because the Panthers are
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: at home, right? So usually that's three points that you
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: get for being at home.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: I mean, we're talking about just how down bad the
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: Chargers are right now. Panthers are in one, just insane.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: A skeletal collapse waiting here to be laid to rest. Again,
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: Jess has got the Lions at minus three and a half.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: If you like it, text FACT right now to 49451.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: If you don't like it, text FICTION to 49451. The
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: mayor of Maple Valley. Well, it's October 1, so I
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: kind of call this the passing of the torch from
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: one Kraken guy to another Kraken guy. You're looking sprite.
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: Thank you. Out of the mottles.
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: Appreciate it, yeah.
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: Snazzy Kraken Hockey Network half zip.
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: Weather vest.
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: So I don't spill anything on my shirt.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: That's what the cool people get.
- 1:13:08Speaker 6: It's a don't spill something on your dress shirt.
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: I'm still all decked out. I live in Radioland, so
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: I'm still decked out in the Filson hoodie.
- 1:13:16Speaker 6: Radioland is... There are... There are a lot of days
- 1:13:20Speaker 6: that I really like Radio Land. Most days I like
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: Radio Land. There is a version of me for the
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: San Diego Padres. He had a great video of the
- 1:13:30Speaker 6: radio version of me versus the TV version of me
- 1:13:32Speaker 6: because he does some hits down there for TV. The
- 1:13:34Speaker 6: radio version of him, like when the Padres were on
- 1:13:36Speaker 6: the road, he's just in hat, hoodie, the whole thing.
- 1:13:41Speaker 6: The KJR spring, summer, non-cracking game day version of me,
- 1:13:44Speaker 6: as you well know, is a baseball hat, sweatpants, hoodie.
- 1:13:48Speaker 6: And away we go. I'm not wearing a hat, not
- 1:13:51Speaker 6: wearing a hoodie. And I walk in and big boss
- 1:13:53Speaker 6: CrossFit guy down there, old Mark, he says, oh, it
- 1:13:56Speaker 6: must be a TV game. You got the TV hair going.
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: I always know.
- 1:14:00Speaker 6: I had to go, I had to go, I had
- 1:14:01Speaker 6: to like do an inventory yesterday. I go, damn, I
- 1:14:03Speaker 6: think I need some hair. I don't know anything. It's
- 1:14:06Speaker 6: been like six months since I had to pull a
- 1:14:07Speaker 6: dress shirt out of the closet. So yeah, here we go.
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: Put on the makeup. It's finally hockey season.
- 1:14:12Speaker 6: Here we go, hockey season. I think it was you
- 1:14:15Speaker 6: earlier that said something that really kind of made me smile.
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: or maybe it was, I don't know if it was
- 1:14:19Speaker 6: you or the morning show, made me smile to think
- 1:14:21Speaker 6: that it's October 1st. And the Houston Astros are not
- 1:14:26Speaker 6: playing baseball in October.
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of guys.
- 1:14:30Speaker 6: Of course, nobody in the American League West is playing
- 1:14:32Speaker 6: baseball in October.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: I said this. That's all right. I think it is fanatics.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: They're selling hooded sweatshirts. Every team is wearing the same
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: brand of sweatshirt. I think last year it said built
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: for fall. And now it's like nothing like October. Astros baseball.
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: Are you watching on the couch? Nothing like October, kids!
- 1:14:54Speaker 6: Hungry kids. They'll send those to a third world country somewhere.
- 1:14:58Speaker 6: Because they're not playing in October either. They're playing as
- 1:15:00Speaker 6: many games. They played two extra games. They got what
- 1:15:03Speaker 6: they deserved. The empty ballpark.
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: The booze.
- 1:15:06Speaker 6: Didn't we just see what happened? That's karma. We just
- 1:15:09Speaker 6: saw that the American League West was indeed really awful.
- 1:15:11Speaker 6: That was the best we had to offer in this division.
- 1:15:13Speaker 6: They're the NFC South. You know, like where one and
- 1:15:16Speaker 6: two is going to get you in the playoffs, right?
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: I see Dick's point of this. He brought this up,
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: and this is kind of in comparison to, well, when
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: you come out of the brutal schedule the Mariners had,
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: and you had the Angels, the A's, the Rockies, and
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: you're thinking, oh, it eases up. But Dick's like, well, yeah, well,
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: this team sucks too. But still you think, you get
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: in with that kind of pitching staff. Isn't it just
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: a little bit different? Well, you will. A little bit different.
- 1:15:40Speaker 6: We'll never know.
- 1:15:41Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:15:42Speaker 6: We'll never know.
- 1:15:44Speaker 5: But.
- 1:15:45Speaker 6: The starting pitching wasn't as good as it was in
- 1:15:48Speaker 6: the past. I mean, we talked about that yesterday, Joe Sheehan,
- 1:15:50Speaker 6: you know, we'll have, you know, Sarah's on our last
- 1:15:52Speaker 6: visit with, you know, coming up today. And it's like this,
- 1:15:54Speaker 6: this starting pitching staff was not lights out.
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: By any means.
- 1:15:58Speaker 6: Like they weren't, it's not 2024 level. Like if you
- 1:16:01Speaker 6: were voting on a Cy Young, not one of those
- 1:16:02Speaker 6: guys to get a vote.
- 1:16:04Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: Like, which we're all talking about. Like, I mean, there
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: might be three or four guys that could get Cy
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: Young votes. Not this year.
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: No, not this year.
- 1:16:10Speaker 6: So, We move on. We move on to football. We got,
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: you know, Huskies have a huge one on Saturday against USC.
- 1:16:16Speaker 6: And basically, that's like a loser leaves town match as
- 1:16:20Speaker 6: far as the college football playoff is concerned.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: Like the old school wrestling. They could easily win just
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: one more game, maybe. Who, Washington?
- 1:16:26Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:16:28Speaker 5: Purdue?
- 1:16:29Speaker 6: Well, they'll beat Purdue.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: They'll beat Purdue.
- 1:16:32Speaker 6: I think.
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: Anybody else? My point exactly.
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:16:40Speaker 6: Well, because the thing, like, you would chalk up, I
- 1:16:41Speaker 6: don't know, do they play Maryland or Rutgers? I don't
- 1:16:44Speaker 6: know if they play those teams. These are awful.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: But here's the thing.
- 1:16:48Speaker 6: Like, you would have, normally, you'd chalk up certain teams,
- 1:16:51Speaker 6: like Iowa. You'd think, oh, you could probably take Iowa
- 1:16:53Speaker 6: at home. Iowa looks great. And that's here next week. Like,
- 1:16:56Speaker 6: the Saturday game, there's more pressure on USC, probably, because
- 1:16:59Speaker 6: Lincoln-Riley situation. Although, with the buyout, I don't think they
- 1:17:02Speaker 6: can afford to buy this guy out, so.
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: Uh, yeah, we'll see.
- 1:17:05Speaker 6: We got, we got, we have three hockey games in
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: four days.
- 1:17:08Speaker 10: Yes.
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: Calgary twice. And oh, by the way, our, our, our friend,
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: our friend, who made this schedule? We, we, we, we
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: have some friends, some moles up there who got to
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: look at the lineup from a morning skate. It looks
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: like indeed Curtis Douglas and Jacob Melanson suiting up.
- 1:17:23Speaker 6: Jacob Melanson just grew six inches. He's like the Grinch.
- 1:17:26Speaker 6: His heart grew.
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: I can't wait for this. I said that this might
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: be the most excited I'd been for a home opener
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: or for a season opener in maybe three years.
- 1:17:33Speaker 6: Well, they're going to play a different style with that
- 1:17:36Speaker 6: fourth line. We'll see how much ice time that fourth
- 1:17:38Speaker 6: line gets, but you would think that they would play
- 1:17:41Speaker 6: a little bit different.
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: I don't want to be overbearing or overextensive on the
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: impact of, say, Curtis Douglas. I mean, he is who
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: he is. If you're looking to say he hasn't played
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: 70 games, it's probably not going to happen. But he's
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: there for one role, and one role, period, is protection.
- 1:17:56Speaker 6: Well, and just hold guys accountable and make everybody else
- 1:17:59Speaker 6: bigger on the ice.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: That's a step ahead, man.
- 1:18:01Speaker 6: Hopefully the young guys like Berkley Catton and others have
- 1:18:04Speaker 6: taken a step forward. We'll find out here in six hours.
- 1:18:07Speaker 6: You gave yourself a great show, man. Have a good one, Mikey.
- 1:18:09Speaker 6: By the way, we've got Brennan Funston coming up. Your
- 1:18:12Speaker 6: text available starting at noon. Not a second before.
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: I miss Brennan.
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: Brennan Funston, fantasy football at noon, or at 2 o'clock,
- 1:18:21Speaker 6: but your text starting at noon. We'll get to those.
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: Just kicked my rear last week. I'll be listening.
- 1:18:25Speaker 6: Oh, I sure did. I'm smoking people. We've got a guy,
- 1:18:29Speaker 6: Ross Tucker, coming up at 1220 today. Weekly visit with Ross.
- 1:18:31Speaker 6: Can't wait for that. The return of Steve Palazzolo. Talking
- 1:18:35Speaker 6: all things NFL. Check the Mike podcast. We've got Steve
- 1:18:39Speaker 6: coming on. 33rd team at 1 o'clock. Eno Saris' final
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: visit of the year. And then, as mentioned, Brandon Funston.
- 1:18:44Speaker 6: Plus Factor Fiction. Actually, he's got a pick today. All
- 1:18:46Speaker 6: that coming up in the next three hours.
- 1:18:47Speaker 5: Let's go.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: All right. You and me, Broadcastapalooza. Go Kraken. Big thank you,
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: Al Koniski, Farhan Lalji, your techs, your talkbacks. Greg's back
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: soon for Jessamyn.
- 1:18:55Speaker 13: I'm Mike.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: See ya. Ian, up next.
