- 0:02Speaker 1: And welcome, everyone, to the world-famous Phil Henry Show. This
- 0:05Speaker 1: is Margaret Gray speaking, and now here's Phil. Thank you, Margaret,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and we feature you on one of our Radio Archive
- 0:11Speaker 1: Hours today.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I know.
- 0:13Speaker 1: It's the one with... Oh, Jason... Oh, for God's sake.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Jason J. Delmonico, you told us... Did you ever tell
- 0:21Speaker 1: us that the kid's adopted?
- 0:22Speaker 3: Yes, I did, and he may be listening, so let's
- 0:25Speaker 3: have some sensitivity. I'm sorry, but it was the first
- 0:28Speaker 3: show that you mentioned Jason J... being adopted, and that
- 0:31Speaker 3: you guys... How did that movie... You.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Know full well... What do I do, bomb? You want
- 0:37Speaker 1: to bring this up now, right? Margaret, it's right there
- 0:39Speaker 1: in our archive. I'm sorry, man. Not every movie's a hit.
- 0:42Speaker 1: It bombed horribly, all right? It stunk. As we say
- 0:46Speaker 1: in the business, ladies and gentlemen... Margaret.
- 0:48Speaker 3: No, I'm going to finish this. You started it, I
- 0:50Speaker 3: finish it. As we say in the business, ladies and gentlemen,
- 0:54Speaker 3: it was a smeller.
- 0:55Speaker 1: It stunk it out.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Whoo, man.
- 0:58Speaker 1: This was the movie called The Day Manhattan Died.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Bill Wispy was a comedy writer friend of mine who said,
- 1:06Speaker 1: I've got an idea. And I said, what?
- 1:09Speaker 3: He said, why don't we write a comedy around 9-11?
- 1:13Speaker 3: And I said, my God, my God. At the time,
- 1:15Speaker 3: I thought it was brilliant. I realize now.
- 1:17Speaker 1: God, are you kidding me or something? That's the dumbest
- 1:19Speaker 1: idea I ever heard. But if I want to hear
- 1:21Speaker 1: more from you, I'll do this with a hand.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:24Speaker 1: Okay. What am I doing?
- 1:25Speaker 3: You're waving toward me, toward you.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I'm waving toward me. If I want no more, I'll
- 1:30Speaker 1: do this. It's like you're saying stop.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:33Speaker 1: If you're doing too much, I'll do the finger.
- 1:35Speaker 3: You mean come hither with the finger?
- 1:38Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I'll grab you by your shirt, and I'll begin to
- 1:41Speaker 1: squeeze your head. Margaret, pipe down, okay? You're going to say,
- 1:45Speaker 1: take it easy or pipe down. I came out type.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:48Speaker 3: I'm just going to tell all of you, we gave
- 1:51Speaker 3: it a shot. We had a big party. Jason Jay
- 1:53Speaker 3: had a scene that we thought was funny. He plays
- 1:56Speaker 3: a messenger boy. He rides up to the smoking ruins
- 1:58Speaker 3: of the Twin Towers. He's there to deliver a box
- 2:01Speaker 3: of chocolates. He realizes the Twin Towers have been flattened,
- 2:05Speaker 3: so he opens up the box of chocolates, starts eating them,
- 2:07Speaker 3: and wheels away.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Was that it for him in the... I'm sorry? Was
- 2:12Speaker 1: that it for him in the movie? Oh, my God,
- 2:14Speaker 1: look at Phil.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Was that it?
- 2:15Speaker 1: Well, Margaret, is that the only thing he did? No,
- 2:17Speaker 1: there was a couple of other scenes. But that one,
- 2:20Speaker 1: for us, we thought was hysterical.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, that's... Oh, look at it.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Oh, here we go. Now you guys are going to
- 2:27Speaker 1: second guess. Look, Margaret, are you kidding me? Comedy around 9-11?
- 2:31Speaker 2: Kid rides up. He has a child.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I can understand how the humor is there, Ms. Gray,
- 2:35Speaker 3: on account of the kid. But, I mean, God damn.
- 2:38Speaker 1: God damn what? Hey, watch the language, will you, please? Oh, sure, Phil.
- 2:42Speaker 1: We drop F-bombs and S-bombs around here, give each other
- 2:45Speaker 1: the finger. Margaret, what are you getting upset for? I'm
- 2:48Speaker 1: just sorry that you replayed that.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Look, I think people should judge for themselves. It's one
- 2:53Speaker 3: of our radio archive hours that is being disseminated and
- 2:56Speaker 3: dropped all out there in the whole damn world of,
- 2:59Speaker 3: you know, podcasts.
- 3:01Speaker 1: What is that supposed to mean?
- 3:02Speaker 3: It means that you can find it on a variety
- 3:05Speaker 3: of platforms from iHearts to Podcast One to to Spotify,
- 3:10Speaker 3: et cetera. These are two extra archive hours that we
- 3:13Speaker 3: do every day in addition to our.
- 3:15Speaker 1: In addition to the radio, the feature radio archive hour
- 3:17Speaker 1: that you do right here. Right, the one you find
- 3:19Speaker 1: on our homepage. Well, one of them is you. No,
- 3:22Speaker 1: you're the featured archive. Oh, that's good.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Hey, take it easy. Ms.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Gray, you go into the bathroom if you have to
- 3:29Speaker 3: squeeze one off.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I'm going to kick someone's... Wait a minute, Margaret, wait
- 3:32Speaker 1: a minute. I'll be in the bathroom.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Um.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Well, all right, enough said about that. It was Jason J.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Delmonico.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Although, didn't he do the Burger King commercial? Who cares?
- 3:43Speaker 1: So welcome to the show.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Now, here's the thing, and I owe you guys an explanation,
- 3:49Speaker 3: because I'd taken a lot of time off, and I
- 3:51Speaker 3: said I had another job to do, I had another
- 3:53Speaker 3: job to do, I had another job to do. And
- 3:54Speaker 3: I'm actually down through the last six or seven months
- 3:56Speaker 3: since I got back to California. I've been very fortunate,
- 3:59Speaker 3: and there's been a lot of work outside of just
- 4:01Speaker 3: the podcast that we do on camera. And one of
- 4:07Speaker 3: them was the TV show, The Paper. There's two episodes
- 4:09Speaker 3: of that that I worked on. The second episode will
- 4:12Speaker 3: be coming out hopefully very soon. And another show is 9-1-1,
- 4:16Speaker 3: where I had the great fortune, and I mean immense fortune,
- 4:19Speaker 3: of working with some pretty amazing actors. So I don't
- 4:23Speaker 3: want to go into a whole big thing because I
- 4:25Speaker 3: don't want to.
- 4:26Speaker 1: You don't know what? Look at Phil. I'm sitting here
- 4:28Speaker 1: on a toilet listening to this. Okay, why don't you
- 4:30Speaker 1: finish what you're doing?
- 4:31Speaker 2: Oh, yes, sir. Margaret. Margaret. Here, Ms.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Gray, I'll bring it. There's another extra bounty towel.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Anyway, so yeah, so for three days, it really culminated
- 4:45Speaker 3: in a big three-day experience of like 12, 13-hour days.
- 4:49Speaker 2: It was nuts.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And the show itself, I think the first episode came
- 4:53Speaker 1: out last week. I'm in three of them.
- 4:57Speaker 3: And also with a very, very talented cat, Rob Hubel,
- 5:01Speaker 3: he was just a funny guy. And also he plays the,
- 5:05Speaker 3: I think he plays like the city manager or something
- 5:07Speaker 3: like that. But anyway, if you know 9-1-1, you know
- 5:10Speaker 3: that it's the story of first responders in the city
- 5:12Speaker 3: of Los Angeles, a great cast led by Angela Bassett.
- 5:15Speaker 1: And they were long working days. That's what I'm trying
- 5:18Speaker 1: to get to here. Because that's why you were taking,
- 5:21Speaker 1: you know, you're doing a lot of the, yeah, you're
- 5:23Speaker 1: doing a lot of encores. Right. And it's going to happen.
- 5:27Speaker 1: It's going to happen.
- 5:28Speaker 2: And, and, I don't know.
- 5:29Speaker 1: We got Tom Dobka is going to call up and
- 5:31Speaker 1: rip me an ass.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Well, Tom Dobka, Mr.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Henry, is a radio consultant and he's got some things
- 5:36Speaker 3: to say about what are you doing?
- 5:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, isn't that great?
- 5:40Speaker 3: So anyway, moving along. So there were, it's a great
- 5:44Speaker 3: special effects laden show, great director, great everybody. I just
- 5:49Speaker 3: loved working with everyone on that show. And they were
- 5:52Speaker 3: very encouraging people and very supportive people. And We shot
- 5:55Speaker 3: up in Santa Clarita, some of the stuff, and in
- 5:57Speaker 3: Los Angeles one day in L.A. I couldn't believe it, man.
- 6:00Speaker 3: They had like five or six, like 20 blocks blocked off.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Around the center of the city, around downtown, to do
- 6:09Speaker 1: a lot of that stuff.
- 6:10Speaker 3: So I don't want to talk too much about it
- 6:13Speaker 3: other than the fact that they were, I will tell
- 6:16Speaker 3: you this right now, those three days that I did
- 6:18Speaker 3: on that set were the hardest three days of work
- 6:21Speaker 3: I've ever done in my life.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Bullshit. You worked in construction work.
- 6:25Speaker 3: I swear to God, there were tougher days than any
- 6:28Speaker 3: construction gig I had.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I'm not kidding.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Because you're in an environment, in an environment, I should say,
- 6:35Speaker 3: that there's a lot of special effects stuff going on.
- 6:38Speaker 3: The temperature changes from cold to hot. You're standing around
- 6:41Speaker 3: on a set and then you're moving and then you're
- 6:43Speaker 3: not moving, you're moving and you're not moving for hours
- 6:44Speaker 3: and hours and hours and hours on end. And, you know,
- 6:49Speaker 3: and then you sit down and you relax.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Okay, come on back now. Time to work again.
- 6:53Speaker 3: And one of the things about– I would just say this,
- 6:55Speaker 3: and I'm not trying to sound like some grand, experienced actor,
- 6:58Speaker 3: but this is the thing that I've noticed. They would say, okay,
- 7:01Speaker 3: get ready. You know, like, for instance, I– let's go
- 7:05Speaker 3: again from the top, you know, whatever.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Okay. And wait a minute, Billy, move the camera there.
- 7:10Speaker 1: You know, you're waiting to kind of have it start.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:12Speaker 1: And you're starting to get tired. And yeah, exactly. He said, okay, okay,
- 7:16Speaker 1: get ready. Okay.
- 7:18Speaker 3: And move the camera a little bit more. Hey, Phil,
- 7:20Speaker 3: could you back up? And, you know, so finally like
- 7:22Speaker 3: five minutes and action, bang. Then you go and you
- 7:25Speaker 3: hope to God you did the right thing. So all
- 7:28Speaker 3: of that is to say that there was a, and
- 7:31Speaker 3: as the shows come out, I'll mention more about the
- 7:33Speaker 3: people that were involved, but I don't want to, sit
- 7:35Speaker 3: here and start dropping names.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Why not, Phil? This is exact. I want to put
- 7:38Speaker 1: this in my column. I want to put in all
- 7:40Speaker 1: the names of the people.
- 7:42Speaker 3: You can look up 911 on IMDB or wherever, and
- 7:45Speaker 3: you can see the people that are in the show
- 7:48Speaker 3: and people that I worked with. And I was really
- 7:50Speaker 3: fortunate to work with the star of the show for
- 7:53Speaker 3: like all of my time on.
- 7:57Speaker 1: The show. You know, you're really, it's interesting, Phil, you
- 8:00Speaker 1: get all tongue-tied and stuff when you're talking about this
- 8:02Speaker 1: TV stuff.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Why?
- 8:03Speaker 1: Because everybody gives me crap about it. What do you
- 8:05Speaker 1: mean they give you crap about it? They're telling me,
- 8:07Speaker 1: what are you taking all this time off for the show?
- 8:08Speaker 1: Are you doing all the TV stuff? So I try
- 8:11Speaker 1: to be as self-effacing as I can and not try
- 8:13Speaker 1: to sound like I'm the.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Get Dovka. Oh, yeah, great. Here's Dovka.
- 8:17Speaker 1: What do you want me to say to him?
- 8:19Speaker 2: Hey, Tom? Oh, yeah, thanks a lot, Phil.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Look, I'm sorry, Tom. I just, you know, I'm sorry.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, look, I'm not going to break your cast
- 8:32Speaker 2: tonight too much. The only thing I was going to say...
- 8:35Speaker 2: is that when you come on here and you're talking like, hey,
- 8:38Speaker 2: I went on a TV show and everything like this,
- 8:40Speaker 2: it makes the audience think that you think it doesn't
- 8:43Speaker 2: smell anymore and you don't need to turn a fan on,
- 8:46Speaker 2: that's all.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I don't know what you're talking about now. Usually I
- 8:49Speaker 1: can understand what you're saying. What are you talking about?
- 8:52Speaker 2: I'm talking about what you're talking about right now, you
- 8:54Speaker 2: being on a TV show. Because when you do, when
- 8:57Speaker 2: you do, excuse me for a minute.
- 9:00Speaker 1: You all right, Tom?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just trying to... I'm on my
- 9:03Speaker 2: way out to Santa Pina Nava. You know where this is, Phil?
- 9:07Speaker 1: What is it?
- 9:08Speaker 2: Santa Pina Nava.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Santa Pina Nava? Which way are you going?
- 9:13Speaker 2: I'm heading east. From where? Out of L.A.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Are you still in California?
- 9:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Get a load of this guy, will you, Mark?
- 9:21Speaker 1: We've never heard of Santa Pina Nava. Yeah.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yeah. No, man.
- 9:26Speaker 1: No, there's no such town. You're going to have to...
- 9:27Speaker 1: There's no such town, huh?
- 9:29Speaker 2: The guy says... Let me see. Oh, yes, he put
- 9:31Speaker 2: down penis. It's a bad Santa.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Who did that for you?
- 9:35Speaker 2: It was the program director over there, Bobo. Joey, I'm
- 9:39Speaker 2: going to get you for this. No, I'm on my
- 9:42Speaker 2: way to... Okay, no, I'm going to Needles, Arizona. Is
- 9:45Speaker 2: there a station there? No, it's... A friend of mine
- 9:48Speaker 2: is there. Needles, Arizona? Yeah, somebody I met, someone that I...
- 9:54Speaker 2: I might get something going with, I don't know.
- 9:56Speaker 1: A female?
- 9:57Speaker 2: None of your business.
- 9:58Speaker 1: All right, so Tom, tell us, what... what is it
- 10:00Speaker 1: that you called for?
- 10:02Speaker 2: Yeah, no kidding. Oh my God, oh my God. I
- 10:06Speaker 2: can't call up just to say hi.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Well, every time you call up, you call up to
- 10:10Speaker 3: break my you-know-whats, and I don't think that this is
- 10:12Speaker 3: any different.
- 10:14Speaker 2: I'm saying to you that I just heard you talking
- 10:17Speaker 2: about being on this TV show. And you're going, yeah,
- 10:20Speaker 2: another thing, a lot of these actors that I worked with,
- 10:23Speaker 2: I won't mention their names, but they're very big time
- 10:26Speaker 2: and some of the hardest work.
- 10:28Speaker 3: What's wrong with me telling people what I was doing
- 10:30Speaker 3: outside of the show?
- 10:33Speaker 2: I don't know, Phil. I think it alienates, what's the
- 10:37Speaker 2: word again? Alienates. Yes, thank you, Mark. It alienates a
- 10:43Speaker 2: lot of the people.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Alienates, not alienates.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Want to say it again?
- 10:48Speaker 1: You don't know the word alienate.
- 10:50Speaker 2: No, I don't know. Okay, all right. It alienates a
- 10:55Speaker 2: lot of the people that are listening to your show.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Why would it alienate them?
- 10:59Speaker 2: God, Phil, why would it alienate them? I'll tell you why.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Why are you mocking me, man?
- 11:03Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Why would it alienate them?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Because they're here to hear you do the comedy, and
- 11:09Speaker 2: they want to hear you do all of the voices
- 11:11Speaker 2: that you do, and then do the comedy. And now
- 11:14Speaker 2: here you are, all of a sudden, you're going, I
- 11:17Speaker 2: went up to Santa Clarita, too. You even mentioned the
- 11:19Speaker 2: town which you went up to.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Of course I did.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Well, what's that about?
- 11:23Speaker 1: Letting people know where I was, man, where I was working.
- 11:26Speaker 1: God damn.
- 11:27Speaker 2: God, Phil. Where I was working.
- 11:29Speaker 3: You ought to quit making fun of him, Mr. Dovka,
- 11:31Speaker 3: because all you're doing is sitting, you sit in your
- 11:33Speaker 3: car underneath an overramp, and you eat a.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Peanut butter sandwich. Underneath an overramp?
- 11:38Speaker 1: He means an overpass.
- 11:41Speaker 2: And let me tell you something, Dick, but yeah, I
- 11:42Speaker 2: eat a peanut butter sandwich that I make for myself because, uh.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Your wife and you got a divorce.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah, we got a divorce, so I don't have a
- 11:51Speaker 2: woman making no peanut butter sandwich for me. And yes,
- 11:53Speaker 2: I sleep in my car to save money.
- 11:56Speaker 1: You're not having financial problems, are you?
- 11:58Speaker 2: Oh, my God, because I'm sleeping in my car to
- 12:00Speaker 2: save money? You think I got financial problems?
- 12:02Speaker 1: Sleeping in your car, bro, that's.
- 12:03Speaker 2: A, you know... Hey, what's this bro stuff, too? Where
- 12:07Speaker 2: did all this come from?
- 12:08Speaker 3: All of a sudden, you're... I've talked like that the
- 12:11Speaker 3: whole of my life, man, okay? You just, I don't
- 12:13Speaker 3: know what happened to you. I think you've been passed
- 12:16Speaker 3: out half the time in your car waiting to go
- 12:17Speaker 3: to your next consult gig, like in Santa Pina Nabobo.
- 12:22Speaker 2: All right, that was Duke Winston over there at Bobo.
- 12:24Speaker 2: He gave me the wrong. I'm going to go out
- 12:26Speaker 2: to Needles. I'm going to go and see Darlene, this
- 12:28Speaker 2: girl I know. I'm going to come back to L.A.,
- 12:30Speaker 2: go back to Bobo.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Okay, so I had to ask you, what is Bobo?
- 12:34Speaker 2: It's a station I'm consulting in L.A., KBBO.
- 12:37Speaker 1: That's what they call themselves?
- 12:38Speaker 2: That's what they're branding. I told them, see, what I do, Phil,
- 12:42Speaker 2: is I brand. That's my thing. I put the brand on,
- 12:46Speaker 2: and I go, hey, yeah. You've heard about branding, right?
- 12:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I've heard about it.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Okay, so that's what I do. I help stations brand.
- 12:53Speaker 1: So you're branding this station in L.A. as Bobo?
- 12:57Speaker 2: It's Cats Bobo, yeah. Not just Cats. This is Bobo.
- 13:00Speaker 2: And what it is, as long as you must know,
- 13:03Speaker 2: is it's everybody's name. Like I say, it's Phil Bobo Hendry.
- 13:07Speaker 3: And now we're going to go to General Galen Bobo
- 13:09Speaker 3: Shaw and Margaret Bobo Gray come.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Up next, okay?
- 13:12Speaker 1: Do they play music? Oh, my God.
- 13:16Speaker 2: What's with the, oh, my God.
- 13:17Speaker 1: You're kidding me, General. You're kidding me, Don. What is
- 13:20Speaker 1: your name again?
- 13:21Speaker 2: I'm Tom.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, Tom.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Oh, boy.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Take it easy, will you? So this is the brand Bobo.
- 13:30Speaker 1: What kind of music do they play?
- 13:32Speaker 2: They play a mixture of the top hits of the 60s,
- 13:35Speaker 2: the 70s, the 80s, the 90s, and the 2000s and
- 13:37Speaker 2: the 2010s.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Well, what is that supposed to mean, man?
- 13:44Speaker 2: I'm telling you, it's a light mix of your favorite
- 13:47Speaker 2: hits from the 60s, 70s, you know.
- 13:50Speaker 1: 80s, 90s, the 2000s, 2010s.
- 13:54Speaker 2: You know, I come on here and I tell you
- 13:55Speaker 2: about the stuff that I'm doing, and everybody sits there
- 13:59Speaker 2: and says, let's take turns, okay? The guys that can
- 14:02Speaker 2: stand up, you go ahead and stand up and hit
- 14:04Speaker 2: Tom in the head. Margaret, just squat over top of him.
- 14:07Speaker 1: All right, you take that back right now.
- 14:09Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Scott.
- 14:10Speaker 1: What is going on with you, man? You're all pissed
- 14:12Speaker 1: off because I'm talking about working in the TV. Working
- 14:14Speaker 1: in the TV business, right?
- 14:16Speaker 2: I'm pissed off, Phil, because you ought to be concentrating
- 14:19Speaker 2: on your bread and butter, which is your podcast, the voiceover, the.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Things that you do, and the radio archive hour.
- 14:28Speaker 2: You were in the Radio Hall of Fame. You realize that?
- 14:30Speaker 1: Yes, I do, and I'm very proud of that.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Well, then why don't you start working that a little
- 14:34Speaker 2: bit instead of, hey, yeah... I went out to the TV,
- 14:38Speaker 2: you know.
- 14:39Speaker 3: I don't come on and say, hey, yeah, I never have.
- 14:42Speaker 3: You know that as well as I do. I mean,
- 14:43Speaker 3: I've taken time off and playing encore shows and telling people, yeah,
- 14:47Speaker 3: I've got.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Work I've got to do early in the morning.
- 14:50Speaker 3: And you don't tell nobody about it. You don't say
- 14:52Speaker 3: nothing about it. Okay, does that sound like a guy
- 14:54Speaker 3: that's going, hey, yeah?
- 14:56Speaker 2: Well, okay, but I'm just saying, when you take it,
- 14:59Speaker 2: you say I got work, it makes it sound like
- 15:02Speaker 2: I got better things to do than sit here and
- 15:04Speaker 2: talk to you slobs. Which is basically, that's what you
- 15:06Speaker 2: should do, Phil.
- 15:08Speaker 1: That's not what I'm saying.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Well, you should say, you should say, hey, this is
- 15:11Speaker 2: a Phil Henry podcast. I got better things to do
- 15:14Speaker 2: than sit here and talk to you slobs. Okay? Hey, Tom.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Oh, he's throwing, are you throwing the phone down?
- 15:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Hey, Mr.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Dobka.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Mr. Dobka.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Put him on hold. Jesus.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Yeah, Mr. Dobka? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I know.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Ever since he had that surgery, he reaches down into
- 15:37Speaker 3: his pants.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Give me the phone, okay?
- 15:40Speaker 2: Look, Phil, I don't think it's very fair of you
- 15:41Speaker 2: to say that I'm, you know, I don't know.
- 15:45Speaker 3: I ain't saying nothing. You started it on me. So
- 15:47Speaker 3: all I'm telling you is, I thought, you know, when
- 15:50Speaker 3: we were doing the pre-show, I was asking the other
- 15:52Speaker 3: guys in the crew here, I said, should I talk
- 15:53Speaker 3: about this stuff?
- 15:54Speaker 1: They went, yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Well, sure, you ought to talk about you on a
- 15:57Speaker 2: big TV show, 9-1-1. You ain't even said the name
- 16:00Speaker 2: Angela Bassett.
- 16:01Speaker 1: No, I wasn't going to say the name Angela Bassett,
- 16:03Speaker 1: but you go right ahead and say it.
- 16:06Speaker 2: What an asshole.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Hey, Dovka, how come your voice, like everybody else's, starts
- 16:09Speaker 1: to crack when you get nervous or dumb?
- 16:12Speaker 2: The same reason why it does with you.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Oh. He got you there, General. You didn't get me.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Oh, you want to... Every time you get nervous, General,
- 16:20Speaker 2: you're like, Hey, this is General Galen Shaw. Oh, excuse me.
- 16:25Speaker 1: All right, so Tom Dobka, let's talk about K-Bobo, or
- 16:28Speaker 1: whatever it is.
- 16:29Speaker 2: It ain't K-Bobo, it's Bobo. Okay? And that's the format.
- 16:33Speaker 1: All right, so this sounds like the dumbest idea I've
- 16:35Speaker 1: ever heard.
- 16:36Speaker 2: So I come on here, I talk to you about
- 16:38Speaker 2: the TV stuff, what you do, and the first thing
- 16:40Speaker 2: I get out of the mouth of Margaret Gray is, okay,
- 16:42Speaker 2: let's talk about Tom Dobka, and let's wipe with it.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Go ahead, say something, Tom, and we'll go ahead and wipe.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Tom Dovka here. Okay, let's wipe with that.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Come on, Tom, quit being a baby.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I'm not being a baby. That's exactly what you're doing.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Well, I want to know about this Bobo. Okay, so
- 16:58Speaker 1: it's Margaret Bobo Gray.
- 17:00Speaker 2: That's one of the things I did to brand the station.
- 17:03Speaker 2: From the 60s, the 70s, the 80s, the 90s, the 2000s,
- 17:04Speaker 2: and the 2010s, it's Bobo. Okay? Then they play. So
- 17:11Speaker 2: let's say they start out the hour with You Can't
- 17:14Speaker 2: Hurry Love by the Supremes. From the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000, 2010,
- 17:19Speaker 2: this is from the 60s, Supremes, and You Can't Hurry Love.
- 17:24Speaker 2: And they're doing it over the top of the music, right?
- 17:26Speaker 2: So they've got to hit the post.
- 17:27Speaker 1: That's a big talk-up.
- 17:30Speaker 2: What?
- 17:30Speaker 1: That's a big talk-up from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Here's the Supremes with the Can't Hurry Love.
- 17:36Speaker 2: How long is the instrumental opening vamp on that? I
- 17:39Speaker 2: don't know.
- 17:40Speaker 1: It's not long at all.
- 17:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it goes like... How do you know, Dickman?
- 17:46Speaker 2: I was just listening to it.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Bud's right.
- 17:48Speaker 2: It goes.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't say... You told me one time the
- 17:54Speaker 2: real Don Steele said, this is KHJ Los Angeles right
- 17:58Speaker 2: over top of them going one, two, three, before they
- 18:00Speaker 2: start his song, Good Love. Remember that?
- 18:02Speaker 1: I don't even know what you're talking about, man. All
- 18:04Speaker 1: I'm trying to say.
- 18:05Speaker 2: You know, oh, God, listen to this guy. He doesn't
- 18:06Speaker 2: know what I'm talking about. Hey, look, Phil. Look, let
- 18:09Speaker 2: me tell you something, Phil. The Bobo is going to
- 18:12Speaker 2: break open and do in radio in L.A. what had
- 18:15Speaker 2: not been done in many, many years. Okay? It's going
- 18:18Speaker 2: to be a fresh new sound. A fresh new sound
- 18:21Speaker 2: from L.A. and Southern California. It's the Bobo.
- 18:26Speaker 3: And they asked me if I would do, Hi, I'm
- 18:29Speaker 3: Tom Bobo Davka, and I'm the consultant of the Bobo.
- 18:33Speaker 3: A brand new, fresh sound in the city of Los
- 18:35Speaker 3: Angeles and Southern California. The 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, the 2000s,
- 18:39Speaker 3: and the 2010s.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Fresh, light hits are coming your way on Bobo. I
- 18:41Speaker 2: don't know. Wait. What are you laughing at?
- 18:52Speaker 1: It doesn't sound like you really like it anymore.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Now that I hear myself say it, it sounds stupid.
- 18:57Speaker 1: You got that right.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Well, what is it with you people, man? I come
- 19:00Speaker 2: on here and all you ever do, like I said,
- 19:03Speaker 2: all you ever do is take, here's something I gotta say.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Thank you, we needed that wipe. Thank you, there's another wipe.
- 19:07Speaker 3: All you do is wipe with Tom Topkin.
- 19:11Speaker 1: No, we do not, Tom.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Hey, Mr. Topkin.
- 19:16Speaker 1: We do not, and you know that.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Every time I come on this show with you, Phil,
- 19:21Speaker 2: you talk about how I'm sleeping in my car. You
- 19:24Speaker 2: talk about.
- 19:24Speaker 3: You're the guy that talks about sleeping in your car.
- 19:26Speaker 3: You're the guy that says that, you know, you save
- 19:28Speaker 3: money that way, and you like to travel by car.
- 19:31Speaker 3: You like to use your cell phone. You don't want
- 19:32Speaker 3: to travel by air. You like to think about what
- 19:34Speaker 3: you're doing, so you like to drive. And you told
- 19:36Speaker 3: me that, didn't you?
- 19:38Speaker 2: Yeah, Phil. God, you told me that, didn't you? Yes,
- 19:40Speaker 2: I did tell you, okay?
- 19:42Speaker 1: Okay. And you said you kind of like kicking it
- 19:44Speaker 1: in your car and sleeping in your car.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Look, Phil, who wants to sleep in their car?
- 19:48Speaker 1: What are you, broke?
- 19:50Speaker 2: I was, oh my God.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Hey, Dobcay, you better get some water.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Broke.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I'm a very successful man, okay?
- 19:58Speaker 1: Then why are you sleeping in your car?
- 20:00Speaker 2: Because I don't want to keep checking into hotels, okay?
- 20:03Speaker 2: I want to pull off the side of the road,
- 20:05Speaker 2: go to sleep, wake up. Maybe I only want to
- 20:07Speaker 2: sleep three hours, and then I want to get back
- 20:08Speaker 2: on the road and get to where I'm going.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Like Santa Ponapina or whatever it was.
- 20:13Speaker 2: That was that guy, Russell Wiskins, at the Bobo, and
- 20:16Speaker 2: I will definitely have a conversation with him.
- 20:19Speaker 1: So he told you about some fake town that you
- 20:21Speaker 1: were on your way to?
- 20:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought it was a place that had a
- 20:24Speaker 2: radio station. They wanted a consultant. They wanted to have
- 20:27Speaker 2: a consultant. They wanted a consultancy. Yeah, they wanted to
- 20:31Speaker 2: have a consultancy.
- 20:33Speaker 3: And it turns out it don't exist. So good enough,
- 20:35Speaker 3: my friend Darlene Good lives in Needles, what town is it?
- 20:40Speaker 2: Needles, Arizona? Yeah, Needles, Arizona, in California. I think it.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Straddles across the borderline. Needles, California, Needles, Arizona.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Take your pick. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Everything with you, Bud, ends with a yeah. Well, it does.
- 20:58Speaker 2: All right, well, anyway, I went on my way to
- 21:00Speaker 2: go see her. So, anyway, Phil, I would say this.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Congratulations on your big TV work and all of this.
- 21:07Speaker 3: You know what, man? I only bring it up to
- 21:10Speaker 3: explain it to the audience. I think it's worthy to discuss.
- 21:13Speaker 3: I had a great time. I worked with great people.
- 21:16Speaker 2: And I mean that.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I'm not, you know... Just embellishing for embellishment's sake. I
- 21:22Speaker 1: really did work with great people.
- 21:23Speaker 2: You don't want to drop no names or anything?
- 21:26Speaker 1: Not just now.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Wait until the shows get on the air after just
- 21:29Speaker 3: one episode. There's three that we were involved in.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we say we. There's only one of you. Why
- 21:35Speaker 2: do you say we?
- 21:36Speaker 3: Because that's a more respectful way of referring to oneself
- 21:39Speaker 3: on the air. Say we, because there's a lot more
- 21:41Speaker 3: going on than just me.
- 21:43Speaker 2: What?
- 21:44Speaker 1: You don't get that, do you, Dovka? When you talk
- 21:46Speaker 1: about yourself, you say, well, what we decided to do,
- 21:48Speaker 1: because you got a wife, you got friends, you got co-workers,
- 21:51Speaker 1: all kinds of people helping one with an effort.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Hey, what is it with you? Everybody ganging up on me.
- 21:57Speaker 3: I call up, I want to know what was going on.
- 22:00Speaker 3: I was going to tell you about Bobo, okay? I
- 22:03Speaker 3: told you about Santa Polapena, and it turns out, you know,
- 22:06Speaker 3: that was.
- 22:06Speaker 1: That was one of your co-workers screwing with you, man.
- 22:08Speaker 3: We're the guys that set you straight. Tom Dobka, radio consultant,
- 22:15Speaker 3: has been my guest here on the Phil Henry Show.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Oh, what is it? Were you kicking me off the air?
- 22:20Speaker 3: No, I'm not kicking you off the air. I'm just
- 22:21Speaker 3: saying you were with us, and it's been great having
- 22:23Speaker 3: you with us. What else do you want to talk about?
- 22:25Speaker 2: I was going to talk about Bobo.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Jesus. So what is there to say about Bobo? This
- 22:32Speaker 1: is the format.
- 22:33Speaker 2: The name of the format is the Bobo, okay? I
- 22:36Speaker 2: don't know if you, you probably remember a lot of
- 22:38Speaker 2: people remember Boss Radio, this kind of thing. Of course.
- 22:41Speaker 2: All right, those are all radio formats. This is Bobo.
- 22:45Speaker 2: And it's not Bobo Hotel. The station I'm consulting, Bobo,
- 22:49Speaker 2: is it 10-10-10-90 or 10-10-10? I forget. It ain't 10-10.
- 22:53Speaker 2: That's KNX. 10-90 or 10-10-10-10-10-y or something. I forget.
- 22:57Speaker 1: What do you mean 10-10-y?
- 22:59Speaker 2: It's something around 10-10, but I know it's not KNX.
- 23:02Speaker 2: But the station I'm consulting, Bobo, okay?
- 23:06Speaker 1: Do you tell them what the frequency is?
- 23:09Speaker 3: No.
- 23:09Speaker 2: It's like we want this to be so big. It's Bobo.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Just trying to figure out where we are on the dial.
- 23:18Speaker 2: What are you laughing at?
- 23:19Speaker 1: That's the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life.
- 23:22Speaker 2: What is?
- 23:24Speaker 1: We're so big trying to figure out where we are.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Hey, let me tell you something, Phil. Bobo is your friend,
- 23:31Speaker 3: but someday Bobo is going to be your daddy.
- 23:34Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Oh, yeah, right. That's right.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Look it, man. Where are they located on the dial?
- 23:39Speaker 2: I'm not going to say. Bobo, take a wild guess
- 23:42Speaker 2: where we are.
- 23:44Speaker 1: That really is going to help people find your station
- 23:46Speaker 1: and listen to it.
- 23:47Speaker 2: We're going to be so big and so significant. that
- 23:49Speaker 2: people go, oh, God, what is that music? I love
- 23:51Speaker 2: that music. Where is the station? And people will say, yeah,
- 23:54Speaker 2: that's Bobo. It's at XYZ Frequency in L.A. So it's
- 23:58Speaker 2: an L.A.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Station right now. Do you have any other client stations?
- 24:01Speaker 2: I'm working on it. We got L.A. We can sign it.
- 24:04Speaker 2: That's what I said. I'm driving out to the eastern
- 24:07Speaker 2: part of L.A. Metro, you know, the Inland Empire. There's
- 24:11Speaker 2: Santa Polapena. I don't know where the hell that's supposed
- 24:13Speaker 2: to be.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Well, is it Riverside? Is it San Bernardino?
- 24:15Speaker 2: That's it, San Bernardino. San Bernardino.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not Santa Polapena.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, okay?
- 24:24Speaker 1: So, Tom, how is business?
- 24:25Speaker 2: Good? Yeah, it's very, very good.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Why?
- 24:28Speaker 2: Why do you say that like you're expecting me to say? No,
- 24:31Speaker 2: I'm going to be blowing my brains out tonight about
- 24:32Speaker 2: 5 o'clock.
- 24:34Speaker 1: No, I really hope that business is good for you,
- 24:36Speaker 1: and you are saying it's good.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Yes, it's very good. And with Bobo, it's going to
- 24:40Speaker 2: kick me up to the next level.
- 24:42Speaker 1: What are you talking about? Let's not make fun of Tom.
- 24:45Speaker 1: So what do you mean, the next level?
- 24:46Speaker 2: Yeah, hey, General... You know, I'm not trying to tell
- 24:49Speaker 2: you how to go blow up Vietnamese, okay? So don't
- 24:51Speaker 2: tell me how to do no radio.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I'm not blowing up Vietnamese.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I haven't been in the Army.
- 24:55Speaker 1: I haven't been in combat in years.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Well, I don't know. What do you see, a retired general?
- 25:00Speaker 2: What do you want, strut up and down and salute
- 25:02Speaker 2: yourself in the mirror?
- 25:03Speaker 1: Hey, let me tell you, Tom, Dovka, you know what?
- 25:06Speaker 1: If you want to know what the military's like, you
- 25:08Speaker 1: come on over here, and I'll go ahead and put
- 25:10Speaker 1: you through your paces. Yeah, I bet that that's... It's
- 25:14Speaker 1: going to feel real good, too.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll bet it will.
- 25:19Speaker 1: All right, so anyway, Tom, tell us about, anything more
- 25:23Speaker 1: to tell us about Bobo?
- 25:24Speaker 2: I got to get out of here. General Shaw basically
- 25:27Speaker 2: just said he's going to take me in the shower
- 25:30Speaker 2: and go ahead and... Whee! That's exactly what you said.
- 25:33Speaker 1: I did not.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Well, that's how I feel about it. May I hang up, please?
- 25:37Speaker 1: General, you know full well I didn't say anything like that.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Well, you said, come on over here and I'll put
- 25:43Speaker 2: you to your paces.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I don't know if you took it in a weird way.
- 25:46Speaker 1: That's not you, buddy.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, sure. Is Henry laughing at everybody's pain? Somebody
- 25:55Speaker 2: in pain? Here comes Henry. Is someone laying in the
- 25:58Speaker 2: street after they got hit by a car? Here comes Henry.
- 26:02Speaker 2: If somebody's out there.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Tom Dovka, folks. Radio consultant. So he's got the bobo. Yeah,
- 26:09Speaker 1: he's got the bobo all right. But it sounds like
- 26:12Speaker 1: he's got the clap or something. Yeah, that's what I
- 26:14Speaker 1: think it is.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Tom Dovka, who's off, you know, doing his thing, man.
- 26:18Speaker 3: And we wish you all the best, Tom. And, yeah,
- 26:21Speaker 3: I'm sorry that I was talking about the TV stuff,
- 26:23Speaker 3: but Tom's pissed off ever since I got in the
- 26:25Speaker 3: Radio Hall of Fame, and he didn't.
- 26:27Speaker 1: That's your problem, Dovka.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:30Speaker 1: That's exactly how. That's better.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Okay. Bud, we're staring at you. You can stop. So, anyway,
- 26:41Speaker 1: thanks to all. I love you all.
- 26:43Speaker 2: We'll be back.
- 26:44Speaker 3: We've got more to talk about, more to sing about,
- 26:47Speaker 3: more to skip about here on The World Famous Phil
- 26:53Speaker 3: Henry Show.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Phil Henry Show. Phil Henry Show. Phil Show. The World
- 27:00Speaker 1: Famous Phil Henry Show is executive produced by Phil Henry
- 27:03Speaker 1: for Siempre Incorporated, all rights reserved on iHeart Podcasts. This
- 27:08Speaker 1: is General Gable Shaw.
- 27:09Speaker 2: I'm Tom Docter.
