- 0:40the main feed, be it stories, poems, writings, anything.
- 0:45And a big thank you to FZA, Michael and Lady Lavender for
- 0:49signing up. Today.
- 0:51We are back in the book of Georgian folklore written down
- 0:53by Marjorie Wardrobe. This story has elements of the
- 0:56Bengali story told in episodes three O 9 and 320.
- 0:59I had to break the story into two pieces.
- 1:02And in the story we have a thief that is just too wise for the
- 1:05king. Hold on to your drawers.
- 1:08OK, let's begin. The two thieves.
- 1:13There once was a thief called Big Thief, and as you can guess
- 1:17he was rather large. Now one day Big Thief went into
- 1:22town to steal whatever wasn't nailed down.
- 1:25When he walked a little way, he made a stranger.
- 1:27Good day stranger, May God be with you, they said to one
- 1:30another. Who are you and what is your
- 1:33trade? Asked the big chief.
- 1:35My trade is stealing and my name is Little thief, said the
- 1:38stranger. I too am a thief, so let's join
- 1:42together and rob the people blind.
- 1:45He agreed and they became partners.
- 1:48They went on the road to steal. On the way, the big thief said
- 1:52to the little thief, show me how good of a thief you are.
- 1:56But the latter said, You are the big thief, you show me yours
- 1:59first, how can I compare with you?
- 2:02The big thief agreed. Just at that moment, they saw a
- 2:05pigeon sitting on a plane tree. The big thief said, now watch me
- 2:09pull out the tail feathers of that pigeon on the Sycamore tree
- 2:12without it knowing it. Having said this, he went up the
- 2:16tree. When he was about halfway up,
- 2:19the little thief silently snuck under the Sycamore tree, climbed
- 2:23up, and while the big thief was pulling out the tail feathers of
- 2:26the pigeon, the little thief took off his companion's drawers
- 2:29and promptly climbed down the tree.
- 2:33When the big thief came down and proudly showed him the pigeon's
- 2:36tail, little thief thrust into his hand his pocket and showed
- 2:40him the drawers. When the big thief saw this, he
- 2:43was struck in amazement and said, I am well known and
- 2:47famous, but I think you are just as skilled as me.
- 2:52They had tested each other's skill and so they continued on.
- 2:56Along the way. The little thief asked the big
- 2:58thief, what should we steal tonight?
- 3:01Let us go tonight and break into the King's treasury, said the
- 3:04big thief. Sounds like a plan, Greedy's
- 3:06comrade. And they set out in the town
- 3:10after nightfall, when the shuffling of people's feet has
- 3:13ceased, the thieves took 2 bags and went to break into the
- 3:15King's treasury. Little thief said, you climb up
- 3:20into the treasury and gather the money, and I will fill up the
- 3:22bags, then we can pick them up and make our getaway.
- 3:26The big thief did not agree. No, he said, you are smaller,
- 3:31you go inside and I will stay here.
- 3:33He insisted until the little thief gave in.
- 3:37Finally the little thief climbed in and collected the money.
- 3:41Big thief stayed outside and filled the bags.
- 3:44When the 2 bags were full, he made the sign.
- 3:47Then the little thief came out of the treasury and they took
- 3:49the bags and went home. The next morning the king went
- 3:53into his treasury. He looked in and saw what had
- 3:56happened. He called his counsel together
- 3:58and he made his complaint. They planned and planned, and at
- 4:01last they thought of the following scheme.
- 4:05They took a big barrel, filled it with pitch and placed it at
- 4:08the entrance of the treasury. The thieves knew nothing of
- 4:12this. When night came again, they were
- 4:15turned to steal again. Little thief said.
- 4:19Yesterday I went to the treasury.
- 4:21Today it's your turn. I will keep watch for you.
- 4:24The big thief agreed. He went into the treasury and
- 4:27suddenly he was stuck. The little thief pulled hard,
- 4:31but it was of no use. Only his head was visible.
- 4:34He was stuck up to his neck in pitch.
- 4:38When day dawned, the little thief tried once more to pull
- 4:40his friend out, but his head popped off.
- 4:44Then the little thief hit it in a place where no one could
- 4:46possibly find it. He went home and told his late
- 4:49friend's widow. He warned her to be very careful
- 4:52not to go out because anyone caring about the dead thief
- 4:55would immediately be seized and killed.
- 4:58When day dawned, the council told the king, A thief is caught
- 5:01in the trap, but he has no head. The king went himself and saw
- 5:06that in truth the thief had no head, and he was amazed.
- 5:10How could a headless man steal? Then he commanded them, saying,
- 5:15Take his body and put it in the marketplace with soldiers to
- 5:17guard it. Whoever passes by and cries will
- 5:20be guilty, because it is a sign of a pity for the thief.
- 5:24Bring them to me immediately. When Little Thief heard this, he
- 5:29went home and told Big Thief's wife how to act.
- 5:32Take care not to go out, lest they discover you.
- 5:35And he told her of the King's order.
- 5:38The Big Thief's wife couldn't bear it, and begged her to let
- 5:40him go, saying, I will stay away and weep quietly, no one will
- 5:44recognize me. Very well, but be careful.
- 5:48Take a jug of water with you like you were carrying water,
- 5:51and when you get near your husband's body, stub your foot
- 5:53against a stone and break the jar.
- 5:55Then sit down and cry for the broken pitcher.
- 5:59The woman did exactly as she was told.
- 6:01She took the jar on her shoulder and went to get water.
- 6:04When she came to the place where her husband's body was lying,
- 6:07she struck her foot on the stone and let the jar fall, and it
- 6:10broke. Then she sat down by the
- 6:12fragments and began to weep bitterly, apparently for the
- 6:15pitcher, but really for her husband.
- 6:18When she had wailed enough, she rose and walked away.
- 6:22The soldiers were amazed. What a miserable woman.
- 6:25She cried like that for a broken pitcher.
- 6:29Night came. The soldiers returned to the
- 6:31palace with the body of the thief and they said to the king.
- 6:34We saw no one crying except for one woman who hit her foot on a
- 6:37stone and broke her water jar and then she cried bitterly.
- 6:41The king was very angry because he saw the trick that the woman
- 6:44had played. He was enraged because they
- 6:46hadn't seized her and brought her to him, but instead let her
- 6:49escape. Then the king ordered that the
- 6:52soldiers heads be shaved bald. After this ruse failed, the king
- 6:57thought of another. He sent the thief's corpse out
- 7:00of town and laid it next to the city wall.
- 7:03Perhaps the right person would see it and come up and steal it.
- 7:07Soldiers were posted and told that if anyone came to steal the
- 7:10corpse that they should seize them and bring them to the king.
- 7:15On hearing this news, little Thief drove an ass before him
- 7:17into a neighboring village. There he had some cakes baked
- 7:21and turkeys roasted, and put them in a saddlebag and hung it
- 7:24on the ass. Then he bought some of the best
- 7:28wine and went on his way. He went to where the soldiers
- 7:31were posted and cried out. Anyone want a guest?
- 7:35I've come from afar and must stay here tonight because I feel
- 7:38that someone may steal my ass. Let's have a good supper.
- 7:43The mention of a supper delighted the soldiers.
- 7:46They sat down and began to eat. Little thief poured out wine for
- 7:49them. The soldiers drank, but the
- 7:51thief did not drink a drop. Then they'd eaten.
- 7:55Well, he said to them, I'm going to sleep since I am sleepy.
- 7:59You watch my ass and see that no one steals him.
- 8:01If you lose him, I'll tell the king.
- 8:04Settle down and get some rest. Your ass is not so attractive
- 8:07that you need to worry about him, said the soldiers.
- 8:10Little thief laid down and pretended to go to sleep, but he
- 8:13kept a sharp lookout. A short time afterward the
- 8:17soldiers lay in a deep sleep, and they slept as if they were
- 8:19dead. Then the little thief got up and
- 8:23lifted the body of his late companion onto his back.
- 8:26He brought his ass around and put the corpse on it and turned
- 8:29its head towards home. Then he laid back down for a
- 8:32deep sleep. The ass knew its way home.
- 8:37He lowered its head as if he was meditating and went straight
- 8:39home and knocked at the door. Big Thief's wife came out and
- 8:43took the body, and she put it on the couch and wept.
- 8:47Then when her heart was solaced by tears, she buried him under
- 8:50the earth under the couch. When morning came, the soldiers
- 8:54awoke and roused their fake friend.
- 8:57Little Thief looked around and called for his ass.
- 9:01When he saw it was gone, he made a fearful howl.
- 9:04I will go to the king and blame you.
- 9:07The soldiers were terrified. They had completely lost their
- 9:10heads. When they saw that the corpse
- 9:11was gone, they drew money from their pockets and offered it to
- 9:15silence their noisy friend. This was just what he wanted.
- 9:19Not only had he stolen the body, but he got some money too.
- 9:24The soldiers went to the king. When he heard their tale, he was
- 9:27extremely irritated and ordered their beards to be cut off.
- 9:32This new plan failed, so I thought of another one.
- 9:36A street was strewn with money, and soldiers were placed here
- 9:39and there and ordered to arrest any passerby who gathered up the
- 9:42money, for he would be the thief's companion.
- 9:46Little thief heard this news with great joy.
- 9:49He got a pair of boots, tarred and studded, and went out with
- 9:52them under his arm. When he came to the street that
- 9:55was covered with money, he sat down, took off his boots, and
- 9:59put on the tarred boots. Then he walked along the street
- 10:02singing a song. When he got to the end of the
- 10:05street, he took the money that had stuck to his boots, dug a
- 10:08hole in the ground and buried it.
- 10:11Then he walked back to the other end of the street, cleaned his
- 10:13boots again and buried the money.
- 10:16He did this the whole day long, and by evening he had picked up
- 10:20almost half of the money. The soldiers gathered up what
- 10:24was left, went to the king and said no one has been taking the
- 10:27money, but a man was walking in the street from morning until
- 10:30night. The king was enraged that they
- 10:33had not taken the man and ordered that the soldiers stand
- 10:36on their heads. Then he assembled his
- 10:39counsellors and asked their advice.
- 10:42Now the king had a deer. If they let it loose, it would
- 10:45kneel before the House of he who wronged the king.
- 10:48And so the vizier said, Let the deer go, and it will kneel in
- 10:51front of the House of the thief. The king took this advice, and
- 10:55they let the deer loose. It raced along the streets and
- 10:59fell to its knees just in front of the little thief's house.
- 11:03In the morning when little thief awoke, he looked out of his
- 11:06window and he saw the King's deer kneeling in front of his
- 11:08house. He had heard of this deer
- 11:11before, so when he saw it he knew what it meant.
- 11:14He went outside, seized hold of the deer, killed it and skinned
- 11:17it, and then he hid the skin and he kept the meat in the house.
- 11:22The king was mad with rage. When he could not find his deer,
- 11:26he assembled his viziers and told them the story of his lost
- 11:28deer. The viziers wits were at an end
- 11:31now. They could think of no other
- 11:33trap for the thief. But just then an old woman
- 11:37appeared from out of nowhere. She approached the king and
- 11:40said, What will you give me if I find the lost deer?
- 11:45Whatever you ask of me, said the king.
- 11:48Then give me my freedom. I shall not only give you your
- 11:52freedom, but I'll raise you to the rank of Princess, replied
- 11:55the King. The old woman arose and went
- 11:58forth to find the deer. She wandered until at last she
- 12:02came to the Little Thief's house.
- 12:05Little Thief was not at home and he saw Big Thief's wife.
- 12:08She said, Daughter, if you have a piece of deer's flesh, do not
- 12:13hide it from me, it will cure a sick one of his illnesses.
- 12:18The thief's wife did not know the cunning of the old woman and
- 12:21went into her house and brought out a piece of the deer's flesh.
- 12:26The old woman was overjoyed and did not stick around.
- 12:28She got up and went away. When she had gone a little way,
- 12:32she met the little thief, who said, What is that, old lady?
- 12:37A piece of deer flesh has a remedy for my trouble.
- 12:41The woman in that house gave it to me, said the Beldem.
- 12:44Little thief understood her, and he saw through her cunning, and
- 12:47said, What is the use of this morsel of meat?
- 12:50Come with me, and I can give you a whole dish full you can't eat,
- 12:53and give it to your friends. It will be of service to you.
- 12:57The old woman's head swam with pleasure.
- 13:00She turned back and went with little thief.
- 13:03When the deceitful old woman was tricked into the house, he drew
- 13:06out his sack and buried her under the couch.
- 13:09The king waited for news, but the old woman never came back.
- 13:14Some time passed, but the old woman still did not come, and
- 13:18the king was enraged. He assembled his counsellors and
- 13:21said, What is the use of all this?
- 13:24Is there no way of trapping this thief?
- 13:27The vizier said, This fellow is so brave, such a clever thief,
- 13:31that we cannot entrap him. Then the king rose up and said,
- 13:36Let the thief come to me, I shall not harm him, but shall
- 13:38give him my daughter to wife. He is so clever that I cannot
- 13:42take him by trickery. When the little thief heard
- 13:45this, he came to the king and said, I am that thief, and I've
- 13:48come to do your Majesty's will. The king could not break his
- 13:52word, so he gave him his daughter in marriage.
- 13:56A neighboring monarch heard the story every day.
- 13:59He wrote irritating letters to the thief's father-in-law.
- 14:02The king saying aren't you ashamed to have anything to do
- 14:06with a low thief to him marrying your daughter and calling him
- 14:09son-in-law. The king was very much annoyed
- 14:13at this hate mail and at last he fell I'll no longer being able
- 14:17to bear it. Then the King's son-in-law came
- 14:20to him and said, what's the matter?
- 14:22Why are you sick? His father-in-law told him
- 14:25everything and he replied, why worry yourself?
- 14:28Give me a few days and I'll show you a sight.
- 14:31On the 7th prepare a grand festival and I will be here.
- 14:35He fixed the date and then went away.
- 14:38He travelled until he came to the Kingdom of the mocking
- 14:41monarch, and he went into a house and rested.
- 14:45The next day he saw Taylor and said, I want a robe cut of
- 14:48pieces of skin. It must be of all different
- 14:50colors, and I want little bells put on it.
- 14:54When the tailor had finished the garment, the thief gave him
- 14:56money and sent him away. Then he downed the robe, took a
- 15:00glittering sword in his hand, and went to the palace.
- 15:04The porters did not want to let him in, but the thief said.
- 15:08I am Michael Gabriel, sent from God.
- 15:12I have been commanded to take the souls of your King and Queen
- 15:15to paradise. If you trouble me, I shall take
- 15:18your souls too, and I shall send them to hell.
- 15:25He moved towards them and the bells began to ring.
- 15:28The porters hearts were fearful and they hid themselves.
- 15:32The thief went into the king. When he saw the man, he became
- 15:35pale, Michael Gabriel said. I give you a term of three days.
- 15:42In these three days put all your affairs in order, appoint your
- 15:46successor, strip off everything, put yourselves in coffins and
- 15:50set the keys on the top. In three days I shall come
- 15:53again, lock the coffins and take them away with me.
- 15:58When he had said this, he went away.
- 15:59Returning to the house, he took off the robe of skins and waited
- 16:03for three days. On the third day, he clothed
- 16:06himself as before and went back to the palace.
- 16:11The King and Queen had stripped off everything and we're in the
- 16:13coffins waiting, he called out. When you get to paradise, you
- 16:19will hear a noise, then the coffins will open and your eyes
- 16:23will view a glorious scene. He took the keys, locked both
- 16:27the coffins and took them on his back and carried them out.
- 16:32He put them on his ass and went behind it and gently called.
- 16:35Yup. On the appointed day he came to
- 16:39the court of his father-in-law, who invited the whole Kingdom
- 16:42and many neighboring Princess to a great feast.
- 16:46The thief came and as he lifted the coffins off the ass,
- 16:49beautiful music was heard. The thief opened the coffins and
- 16:54the king and queen jumped out naked and began to dance.
- 16:57The people saw their stupidity and were ready to die laughing.
- 17:01Then the king came and clothed them in royal robes and said,
- 17:05now you can go back to your own country and rule your Kingdom,
- 17:08but do not mock me anymore. After this, the king very much
- 17:12loved his son-in-law, and when he died, he left him his
- 17:15Kingdom. The end.
- 17:43Well, I love the way that ended. It reminded me of the Two
- 17:46Thieves story from Bengal, but without as much rivalry.
- 17:50Still, it was so much fun I had to keep myself from giggling
- 17:54every other time the donkey is mentioned.
- 17:55I look forward to more fun like this from this book.
- 17:58And there's just two more stories and then it'll be the
- 18:00Mingrelian Tales. And the podcast shout out is to
- 18:03Plants Apology. Doctor Beliga is back talking to
- 18:06folks who love plant science, and he also tells you why
- 18:09slicing banana in half and sticking it in the ground will
- 18:12not grow you a banana. Go listen to him.
- 18:15And the listener shout out is to the borough of Chagwanas in
- 18:18Trinidad, a large growing municipality just outside of the
- 18:22capital Port of Spain. Chagwanas has a bustling market
- 18:26area, and if I'm lucky enough to go there, I'd like to try the
- 18:29kachori. And so I say to my listener in
- 18:32Chagwanas, I say thank you and goodnight.
