- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the Chicken coop.
- 0:29Welcome back to day three of the Week of Gratitude.
- 0:33So we are talking about other people today and how to be
- 0:37grateful for other people. And it's interesting coming up
- 0:40to Thanksgiving for those who are going to celebrate or not
- 0:45celebrate. We specifically, we could use a
- 0:48little bit of this for when we're around people that maybe
- 0:51we're not necessarily grateful for, but we're spending time
- 0:54with them anyway. How can we put ourselves in a
- 0:58state of gratitude for those people?
- 1:00And how do we, you know, what if it's not just about that?
- 1:03What if it's about just finding gratitude and other people in
- 1:07general? Now, it's easy when you have
- 1:09someone that you really want to be grateful for.
- 1:10Like I often think back to my childhood and how grateful I was
- 1:13for my father. Most of the time I was highly
- 1:17grateful for my father, but there were times when he was
- 1:20really strict and I was not grateful for that in the moment.
- 1:24Now as an adult woman, looking back, I can say, wow, I was
- 1:29really grateful. I didn't realize the jeopardy I
- 1:31was putting myself in. I didn't realize how stupid I
- 1:34was being all of those things. So I could say, yes, looking
- 1:37back, I can find the gratitude all these years later, just like
- 1:40we talked about yesterday. Sometimes it takes years to see
- 1:43that. But you know, when you just
- 1:46think back about the person in general, yes, I had the majority
- 1:50of the time I had massive gratitude for my dad and my
- 1:53mother as well. Even though it was a very
- 1:55different kind of experience with my mother than my father, I
- 1:58can say yes, you know, if it wasn't for her anxiety, I would
- 2:02have never dealt with my anxiety the way I did and I wouldn't be
- 2:05here teaching you this. So I can close that loop, bring
- 2:08it back around and feel good about it.
- 2:10Now, if we stop and we think about, OK, that's reframing it
- 2:15and I love being able to do that.
- 2:17But what if there's somebody that's coming up in in the
- 2:20holiday and you know you're going to see them and you're
- 2:22totally not grateful for them and you're just going there
- 2:24because you have to and you know you're going to have to deal
- 2:27with it. Well, the thing that you have to
- 2:29do in that moment is typically say, OK, well, who's putting
- 2:33this Thanksgiving on? Are there other people that are
- 2:35going to be there that I can focus my gratitude on?
- 2:38Can I focus? And I'm not talking about
- 2:40looking for random other things. I'm saying right now we're
- 2:43talking about being grateful for other people and really digging
- 2:46in and looking at what are the characteristics of those other
- 2:49people that I can be grateful for.
- 2:52And sometimes doing the digging is so powerful.
- 2:56And right now, the way our world is wired, it's very different
- 3:00than it has been over the last 100 years.
- 3:03And there's lots of conversation that makes that make people very
- 3:07uncomfortable, especially older people, because they're not as
- 3:10fluid in things as younger people, whether it's technology
- 3:14or beliefs or any of it. And those conversations can
- 3:17cause us to be very irritated with people.
- 3:21And I'm saying, even if you're irritated with someone, you can
- 3:25sit and pause and say there's got to be one thing about this
- 3:27person that I can be grateful for.
- 3:30And right down to what I used to say about my Aunt Helen all the
- 3:33time, you know what I'm grateful for the fact that I know I
- 3:38didn't want to be like that. So in in her attitude, I knew
- 3:42what I didn't want to be. And that's the part that I was
- 3:46able to walk away with. Now, is it specific in the sense
- 3:49that she had? Yeah.
- 3:50I mean, it's not like, oh, I'm looking at it and saying, oh,
- 3:53because she was so generous and da, da, da, I I am grateful for
- 3:56that. No, I'm saying I watched her
- 3:58attitude over the years and I'm grateful that it's I learned
- 4:02that is not what I wanted for myself.
- 4:04And that was a huge, massive gift to me.
- 4:06Now I will say getting into the dynamics of being with a group
- 4:11of people at the holidays is very difficult for some of us,
- 4:15myself included. Being with a large group of
- 4:18people, having to manage timing, food, appetizers, everybody in,
- 4:23out, it's a lot and it puts a massive amount of stress on all
- 4:27of us. So prepare yourself for that.
- 4:31Make sure you're doing things like staying hydrated.
- 4:33Make sure you put yourself in the right frame of mind so that
- 4:36when you go into being with others, you're in the best
- 4:40physical shape that you can be in and the best mental shape.
- 4:43So that morning, who's ever going to be there on your
- 4:46Thanksgiving? Or again, you can extrapolate
- 4:49this to any other day that you want.
- 4:51I'm just using Thanksgiving Day as ahead of time, a way for us
- 4:56to talk about it in gratitude. Make a list of all the people
- 5:00and then start writing down those things that you could be
- 5:02grateful for. For those people.
- 5:04It starts off right at the beginning of the day and then
- 5:07you're going to have that nice little list ready for when you
- 5:09actually do see them. You can refer back to it even if
- 5:12you have to take a picture of it with your iPhone, call it up in
- 5:15photos and say, oh, that's right.
- 5:16I was grateful for that. For Aunt Sally, like, oh, she
- 5:19likes to voice her opinion. So when she voices her opinion
- 5:22about something that you don't might maybe like, you can go
- 5:25back and say, no, wait, I was grateful for that.
- 5:28So hopefully this is helpful and I will see you guys tomorrow.
- 5:32Have a blessed day, everybody. Bye.
