- 1:11:10Speaker 1: by the Representatives of the United States of America in Congress,
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: assembled July fourth, seventeen seventy six. When in the course
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another,
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: and to assume among the powers of the earth the
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: separate and equal station to which the laws of nature
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: and of Nature's God entitle them. A decent respect to
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men,
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: That whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends,
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: it is the right of the people to alter or
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: to abolish it, and to institute a new government, laying
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: such form as to them shall seem most likely to
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: affect their safety and happiness. Prudence indeed, will dictate that
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: governments long established should not be changed for light and
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: transient causes. And accordingly, all experience hath shown that mankind
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: are more disposed to suffer while evils are sufferable, than
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations,
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: new guards for their future security. Such has been the
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: patient sufferance of these colonies, and such is now the
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: necessity which constrains them to alter their former systems of government.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: The history of the present King of Great Britain is
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: He has refused his assent to laws the most wholesome
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: and necessary for the public good. He has forbidden his
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance unless
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: suspended in their operation till his assent should be obtained,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: to them. He has refused to pass other laws for
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: the accommodation of large districts of people unless those people
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: would relinquish the right of representation in the legislature, a
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: right in estimateable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable,
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: and distant from the depository of their public records, for
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: He has dissolved representative houses repeatedly for opposing with manly
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: firmness his invasions on the rights of the people. He
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: has refused, for a long time, after such dissolutions, to
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: cause others to be elected, whereby the legislative powers incapable
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: of annihilation have returned to the people at large for
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: their exercise. The state remaining in the meantime exposed to
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: all the danger of invasion from without and convulsions within,
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: he has endeavored to prevent the population of these states.
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: For that purpose, obstructing the laws for naturalization of foreigners,
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: refusing to pass others to encourage their migration hither, and
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: raising the conditions of new appropriation of lands. He has
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: obstructed the administration of justice by refusing his assent to
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: laws for establishing judiciary powers. He has made judges dependent
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: on his will alone for the tenure of their offices
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: and the amount and payment of their salaries. He has
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: erected a multitude of new offices, and sent hither swarms
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: of officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: He has kept among us, in time of peace, standing
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: armies without the consent of our legislatures. He has affected
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: to render the military independent of and superior to the
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: civil power he has combined with others to subject us
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution and unacknowledged by
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: our laws, giving his assent to their acts of pretended legislation.
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us, for
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: protecting them by a mont a mock trial from punishment
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: for any murders which they should commit on the inhabitants
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: of these states. For cutting off our trade with all
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: parts of the world, for imposing taxes on us without
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: our consent, for depriving us, in many cases of the
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: benefit of trial by jury, for transporting us beyond seas
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: to be tried for pretended offenses, for abolishing the free
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: system of English laws and a neighboring province, establishing their
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: in an arbitrary government, and enlarging its boundaries, so as
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: to render it at once an example and fit instrument.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: For introducing the same absolute rule into these colonies. For
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: taking away our charters, abolishing our most valuable laws and
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: altering fundamentally the powers of our governments, For suspending our
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: own legislatures and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: for us in all cases whatsoever he has abdicated government
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: here by declaring us out of his protection and waging
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: war against us. He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts,
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: He is at this time transporting large armies of foreign
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation, and tyranny
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: already begun, with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the head
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: of a civilized nation. He has constrained our fellow citizens,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: taken captive on the high seas, to bear arms against
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: their country, to become the executioners of their friends and brethren,
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: or to fall themselves by their hands. He has excited
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: domestic insurrections among us, and has endeavored to bring on
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: the inhabitants of our frontiers the merciless Indian savages, whose
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: known rule of warfare is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes,
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: and conditions. In every stage of these oppressions, we have
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: petitioned for redress in the most humble terms. Our repeated
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: petitions have been answered only by repeated injury, a prince,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: whose character is thus marked by every act which may
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: a free people. Nor have we been wanting an attention
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: to our British brethren. We have warned them from time
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: to time of attempts made by their legislature to extend
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: the circumstances of our emigration and settlement. Here. We have
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: They too, have been deaf to the voice of justice
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: and consanguinity. We must therefore acquiesce in the necessity which
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: denounces our separation, and hold them as we hold the
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: rest of mankind enemies in war in peace. Friends. We, therefore,
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: the representatives of the United States of America in General,
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: Congress Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: and by the authority of the good people of these
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: colonies solemnly publish and declare that these United Colonies are,
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: and of right ought to be free and independent states.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: That they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: and that all political connection between them and the State
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: of Great Britain is and ought to be totally dissolved.
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: And that as free and independent states, they have full
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce,
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: and to do all other acts and things which independent
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: states may of right do. And for the support of
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: this declaration, with a reliance on the protection of Divine providence,
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: and our sacred honor. End of the Declaration of Independence.

- 1:20:39Speaker 1: seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: engaged in a great civil war testing whether that nation,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: We are met on a great battle field of that war.
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: We have come to dedicate a portion of it as
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: a final resting place for those who here gave their
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: and proper that we should do this. But in a
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: larger sense we cannot dedicate, We cannot consecrate, We cannot
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: to add or detract. The world will little note nor
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: long remember what we say here, but it can never
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: forget what they did here. It is for us the living,
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: they have thus far so nobly carried on. It is
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: rather for us to be here dedicated to the great
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: task remaining before us, that from these honored dead we
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: the last full measure of devotion. That we here highly
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain,
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: that this nation under God shall have a new birth
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: of freedom, and that this government of the people, by
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.
