- 2:15Speaker 3: taking over the campus of the University of Charleston. Here
- 2:17Speaker 3: to talk about it, West Virginia music icon Bob Thompson
- 2:21Speaker 3: and Sarah Wright also an icon. Sarah here, you can
- 2:24Speaker 3: also be an icon.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Oh, thank you, but don't hold a candle to Thomas.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Everybody's an icon. Mob. Welcome to the show. Thanks for
- 2:31Speaker 3: great to be here. I think this is my fifth
- 2:34Speaker 3: anniversary actually earlier this week of doing the show. I
- 2:36Speaker 3: think this may be the first time you've ever been
- 2:38Speaker 3: on my show. Pop it took you so long. I
- 2:42Speaker 3: know I'm late getting here. All right, let's talk about
- 2:46Speaker 3: this big event. It is the Charlie West Music Festival,
- 2:48Speaker 3: and again it is happening this Saturday on the campus
- 2:51Speaker 3: of the University of Charleston. Sarah want to I want
- 2:54Speaker 3: to start with you talk about the folks putting this
- 2:57Speaker 3: this music fest on.
- 2:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:58Speaker 5: So, this music fest is hosted by Fund for the
- 3:01Speaker 5: Arts and it is our main fund raiser and it's
- 3:05Speaker 5: going to be an amazing day full of live music,
- 3:08Speaker 5: great selection of drinks including craft beer and wine, and
- 3:12Speaker 5: amazing views there by the capital overlooking the river. It's
- 3:15Speaker 5: going to be awesome.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Talk about the organization, the Fun for the Arts, what
- 3:18Speaker 3: exactly is that?
- 3:19Speaker 5: Yeah, So Fun for the Arts is a nonprofit that
- 3:21Speaker 5: raises money for eleven local art groups. And you know,
- 3:25Speaker 5: we take great pride in our mission, so we put
- 3:27Speaker 5: on amazing events that raise money, and then we take
- 3:31Speaker 5: that money and distribute it to our art groups, who
- 3:34Speaker 5: then put on great events. So it's a beautiful cycle
- 3:37Speaker 5: of sharing where we're just creating all this culture, enrichment
- 3:40Speaker 5: and beauty in our community.
- 3:42Speaker 3: But Bob, you know, when it's kind of a cliche,
- 3:45Speaker 3: I guess and promotions when you talk about music to
- 3:47Speaker 3: say there is something for everyone, But there literally is
- 3:50Speaker 3: something for everyone at this music festival.
- 3:52Speaker 7: Absolutely, yes, And that's one of the things that's going
- 3:56Speaker 7: to be different about this festival that there is a
- 3:59Speaker 7: variety of of music styles but all going to be
- 4:02Speaker 7: great music.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Yeah, And nothing brings people together like great music, you know.
- 4:07Speaker 3: And I always say about these events or something about
- 4:10Speaker 3: live music, whether I particularly care for a certain genre,
- 4:12Speaker 3: and I'm a guy that likes pretty much every genre
- 4:15Speaker 3: of music, but whether you like it or not, you
- 4:17Speaker 3: get out there and you're fellowshipping and you're having you know,
- 4:21Speaker 3: having some beat or having something to drink out there.
- 4:23Speaker 3: It's just everything kind of comes together makes for a
- 4:25Speaker 3: big old happy day.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 7: That's that's what we feel is our mission as musicians
- 4:31Speaker 7: and really as artists, you know, to bring this to people,
- 4:34Speaker 7: to bring people together, and that's something and we can
- 4:37Speaker 7: all just celebrate life and celebrate being together. And I
- 4:41Speaker 7: think that's that's something that we need today especially. Yeah,
- 4:44Speaker 7: you're right about that.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Again.
- 4:45Speaker 3: We're talking Bob Thompson and Sarah right about the Charlie
- 4:47Speaker 3: West Music Festival, and I've got the entire lineup posted
- 4:51Speaker 3: on my social media if you'd like to see, and
- 4:53Speaker 3: just go over to Dave Alan Radio and you can
- 4:54Speaker 3: see the people that are going to be performing there.
- 4:56Speaker 8: Now.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Gates open around two thirty and you're doing happy hour
- 5:00Speaker 3: drinks for five bucks from two thirty to four thirty, right, Sarah.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a fantastic price. And during that time you're
- 5:08Speaker 5: gonna get to listen to Bob Thompson. He kicks off
- 5:11Speaker 5: our live music at three o'clock, so you get to
- 5:13Speaker 5: take advantage of those five dollars happy hour drinks and
- 5:16Speaker 5: listen to Bob. It's an awesome deal.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Indeed it is, and I'll tell you what we're gonna
- 5:20Speaker 3: do right now. We'll continue our conversation, but we just
- 5:22Speaker 3: happen to have four passes to give to somebody to
- 5:27Speaker 3: go to this music festival we're talking about absolutely free
- 5:31Speaker 3: Anthony Harmon the A train is standing by, so I'll
- 5:33Speaker 3: just say it. If you want to be If you
- 5:34Speaker 3: want to go, be Caller four right now at three
- 5:37Speaker 3: zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight. Three
- 5:40Speaker 3: zero four, three four five fifty eight fifty eight Caller
- 5:42Speaker 3: four right now, I have got a actually I got
- 5:45Speaker 3: four passes for you to take into Charlie West Music Festival,
- 5:50Speaker 3: which is happening this Saturday on the campus of the
- 5:52Speaker 3: University of Charleston. Caller four right now three zero four,
- 5:54Speaker 3: three four five fifty eight fifty eight. We'll hook you
- 5:57Speaker 3: up with four free passes. And that's quite a bargain, Sarah.
- 5:59Speaker 5: Yes, it is, because you're getting an amazing lineup of artists.
- 6:03Speaker 5: We have Bob, we have Jocelyn and the Sweet Compression,
- 6:06Speaker 5: we have of good Nature, and our headliner is Shwazy.
- 6:09Speaker 5: So it's going to be an amazing day.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Talk about the individual artists and the type of music that.
- 6:15Speaker 5: They do, right, So, Jocelyn and the Sweet Compression is
- 6:19Speaker 5: like a funk soul band. They have like this beautiful
- 6:23Speaker 5: energy to them. And then of Good Nature. They're out
- 6:26Speaker 5: of North Carolina and they're really upbeat, kind of indie alternative.
- 6:33Speaker 5: They're going to be a nice transition into our party
- 6:36Speaker 5: in the evening. And then of course our headliner is
- 6:38Speaker 5: Shwazy and you'll recognize him from hits like Buzzin and
- 6:42Speaker 5: Corona and Lime, and he calls himself the King of Summer. So,
- 6:46Speaker 5: I mean, what better way to kickstart your summer?
- 6:49Speaker 3: You had me at Corona in Lime, I know, the
- 6:53Speaker 3: King of Summer. How does one get the title of
- 6:55Speaker 3: the King of Summer?
- 6:56Speaker 5: You know, I don't know, but it sounds like one
- 6:58Speaker 5: heck of a title.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I don't want to talk about you. You're somebody. I mean,
- 7:03Speaker 3: as I said, I called you a West Virginia music icon.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I mean, who doesn't know Bob Thompson. I've seen you
- 7:09Speaker 3: perform numerous times in various different different settings and whatever,
- 7:13Speaker 3: what's in this for you? Why? Why do you still
- 7:15Speaker 3: want to do this? Well?
- 7:17Speaker 7: We just love performing for people, and especially in a
- 7:21Speaker 7: live setting. There's nothing like it. And we have as
- 7:24Speaker 7: much fun as we hope the audience does, because for us,
- 7:27Speaker 7: it's always a party. And I'm just, you know, blessed
- 7:32Speaker 7: to have such great musicians playing in the band. Tim
- 7:35Speaker 7: Kurtz beyond drums, Ryan Kennedy you on guitar, and John
- 7:39Speaker 7: Ingram on bass. So we have a party all the time,
- 7:43Speaker 7: and in a live setting like this over by the River's,
- 7:46Speaker 7: it's it's great for us and we love just bringing
- 7:50Speaker 7: people together. Our goal is to make people feel better
- 7:55Speaker 7: when they leave than they did when they came in.
- 7:58Speaker 7: That's our that's our goal, and.
- 7:59Speaker 3: We all need more of that these days. I relaxed
- 8:02Speaker 3: a little bit and put the put the political stuff
- 8:04Speaker 3: behind us and all the strife and the fighting, and
- 8:07Speaker 3: just say let's just come out. Let's let's have a
- 8:09Speaker 3: good time and enjoy some.
- 8:10Speaker 7: Muni, right, And that's something we all have in common.
- 8:12Speaker 9: Now.
- 8:13Speaker 3: You're a guy, uh and and I know a little
- 8:15Speaker 3: about your career. You're a guy who has as I said,
- 8:19Speaker 3: you're West Virginia musical icon. What is it that about
- 8:22Speaker 3: West Virginia that appealed so much to you when you
- 8:24Speaker 3: came here. Well, when I came here.
- 8:26Speaker 7: Uh. Most people think that I learned to play jazz
- 8:29Speaker 7: in New York, which was my hometown, But I learned
- 8:32Speaker 7: to play jazz here. There was when I was in college.
- 8:36Speaker 7: There was a great music scene here in Charleston, a
- 8:38Speaker 7: great jazz scene, especially on the West side of Charleston,
- 8:41Speaker 7: places like the Crazy Horse Cafe and there was another
- 8:46Speaker 7: place called the Palm Gardens. But a lot of those
- 8:49Speaker 7: guys helped me along. They passed the music down to me,
- 8:54Speaker 7: and uh, I learned a lot about how music should
- 8:57Speaker 7: feel and uh uh. So it was a great opportunity
- 9:00Speaker 7: because everybody was very generous with the time, taking young
- 9:04Speaker 7: players like myself at that time under the dead wing
- 9:08Speaker 7: and being sure that we could carry this tradition on.
- 9:10Speaker 7: So that's a tradition that I've tried to keep going,
- 9:13Speaker 7: you know, bringing younger musicians in and helping them to
- 9:17Speaker 7: grow again.
- 9:18Speaker 3: We're talking with Bob Thompson Sarah right about the Charlie
- 9:21Speaker 3: West Music Fest, which is happening this Saturday on the
- 9:24Speaker 3: campus of the University of Charles of Dave aland show
- 9:27Speaker 3: on five Any Live brought to you in part by
- 9:29Speaker 3: Pinnacle Consultants. Their services involved developing comprehensive management plans to
- 9:33Speaker 3: outline strategies for controlling to minimizing as best as exposure.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Perfect for commercial property owners and managers. There's a Pinnacle
- 9:39Speaker 3: Court dot net because what you don't know can hurt you.
- 9:41Speaker 3: I do believe we have a winner of our tickets,
- 9:43Speaker 3: so we'll get that name out for you here. Chris,
- 9:47Speaker 3: Chris Withrow was our winner. So congratulations Chris Withrow, you
- 9:51Speaker 3: won yourself four passes to the Charlie West Music Festival.
- 9:54Speaker 3: I'm sure he and three others will certainly be enjoying
- 9:58Speaker 3: the Charlie West Music Festival, which is happening this Saturday. Sarah,
- 10:01Speaker 3: talk about some of the other events. This is your
- 10:04Speaker 3: big event, your signature event, but talk about some of
- 10:06Speaker 3: the other big events that you guys do.
- 10:08Speaker 5: Fun for the arts. We host two main fundraisers, one
- 10:11Speaker 5: being Charlie West Music Fest in the summer and the
- 10:13Speaker 5: other is the Capitol Cocktail Classic and the Fall. And
- 10:16Speaker 5: the Capitol Cocktail Classic is a lot of fun and
- 10:20Speaker 5: much easier to put on. So, for instance, the Cocktail
- 10:23Speaker 5: Classic only requires twelve volunteers. When Charlie West Music Fest
- 10:28Speaker 5: takes one hundred and forty so but nonetheless, the Capitol
- 10:32Speaker 5: Cocktail Classic is a lot of fun. It's a cocktail
- 10:34Speaker 5: competition between four restaurants downtown and you go from restaurant
- 10:39Speaker 5: to restaurant sampling a food and signature cocktail, then you
- 10:44Speaker 5: vote for your favorite at the end of the night.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Is a very fun.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Event and quite a bit I mean, I know you
- 10:48Speaker 3: put a lot of work into that, but this is
- 10:49Speaker 3: a little bit different when you're talking about all these
- 10:52Speaker 3: musicians and you're dealing with That's why you got somebody
- 10:55Speaker 3: like Bob Thompson to be able to help you, help
- 10:57Speaker 3: you pull that off, because it takes a lot of
- 10:59Speaker 3: people to put on a music Festivoid. Really, I've done it.
- 11:01Speaker 3: It takes a lot of people involved.
- 11:03Speaker 5: Yes, it does. And we are very grateful to Bob
- 11:05Speaker 5: because not only does he play at our event, but
- 11:08Speaker 5: he is also a board member and committee member at
- 11:11Speaker 5: Fund for the Arts, So we are very grateful to
- 11:13Speaker 5: him and all that he does. He is a instrumental
- 11:16Speaker 5: part in putting this day together. Thank you, Bob.
- 11:20Speaker 3: What's the best way for people to get tickets or
- 11:22Speaker 3: to listen to us? Right now?
- 11:23Speaker 5: So you can get on our website at fund for
- 11:26Speaker 5: the Arts wv dot org or our Facebook page Fund

- 11:32Speaker 5: at the gate. We make it easy.
- 11:34Speaker 3: And I know there's nothing you can do about the weather,
- 11:37Speaker 3: but here's what I saw this morning, and a lot
- 11:39Speaker 3: can change. It looked like there was going to be
- 11:41Speaker 3: rain early in the morning, but it's going to clear
- 11:44Speaker 3: out by afternoon. Now a lot can change with that.
- 11:46Speaker 3: But this thing, unless you got like a lightning storm,
- 11:48Speaker 3: you guys are going to go right.
- 11:50Speaker 5: That's right, We're on. But I am manifesting beautiful weather.
- 11:53Speaker 5: It's going to beautiful Sonny.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Were you at Brian Hughes, all right, do your job.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Brian Spencer and all those guys over there house did
- 12:00Speaker 3: your job. Hey, guys, I appreciate you taking time out

- 12:40Speaker 5: Come on, you know, let's turn it up. Parties just
- 12:43Speaker 5: getting started.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Right, exactly right, Sarah and Bob. I appreciate you both
- 12:47Speaker 3: being here. Thanks a lot. We'll take a break.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Stay.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby is coming up plus a little
- 12:52Speaker 3: bit like later on Morgan Tenny will be stopping by.

- 16:08Speaker 3: my dad with you during the break. My father was
- 16:09Speaker 3: a Sunday school superintendent. He would book people to come
- 16:13Speaker 3: to the church, different gospel groups and whatever, and about
- 16:16Speaker 3: some of the people he'd say, well, you know what
- 16:17Speaker 3: the Lord needs clappers too.
- 16:20Speaker 6: I am definitely a clapper.
- 16:21Speaker 8: You know.
- 16:22Speaker 6: I have an eleven year old Robert, and a couple
- 16:24Speaker 6: of years ago, we were out somewhere in the summer,
- 16:27Speaker 6: and I like to always ask people when I see them, Hey,
- 16:29Speaker 6: where are you from? Is this your first time to
- 16:30Speaker 6: West Virginia? And he was telling somebody, my mom's job
- 16:33Speaker 6: is to sing country roads. So we do have a
- 16:37Speaker 6: lot of country roads coming out of the State Tourism Office,
- 16:39Speaker 6: but I am never the one singing it.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Well, that's probably a good thing, based on what you've
- 16:43Speaker 3: told me. Me too, kid, me too, all right, So
- 16:45Speaker 3: let's talk about summer in West Virginia. I mean, are
- 16:49Speaker 3: we talked about some events here in Charleston with Charlie
- 16:51Speaker 3: West Music Festival, but also festival kicks off today in Charleston,
- 16:56Speaker 3: and I'm actually going to have some folks from festival
- 16:58Speaker 3: in studio on the show coming up tomorrow. But there's
- 17:02Speaker 3: a whole lot going on.
- 17:03Speaker 6: There's a lot going on, So if you think about
- 17:05Speaker 6: West Virginia, there's always a lot going on. So we've
- 17:08Speaker 6: got this incredible natural beauty, We've got all kinds of
- 17:11Speaker 6: outdoor recreation, these great mountain towns, where we've got great music,
- 17:17Speaker 6: we've got great restaurants, etc. But right now is the
- 17:19Speaker 6: time of the year where we also get to add
- 17:21Speaker 6: on all those festivals. So we're just wrapping up here
- 17:24Speaker 6: the bike races in Charleston, which were incredible. Hats off
- 17:27Speaker 6: to the mayor and the Charleston CBB. We're going into festival,
- 17:30Speaker 6: the Charlie West Music Fest. Then soon it'll be Regattas.
- 17:33Speaker 6: So it's a great time of year. And I don't
- 17:35Speaker 6: want to hear anyone around here saying there's nothing to do,
- 17:37Speaker 6: because in addition to the natural stuff we've got in
- 17:40Speaker 6: this area, it is festival after festival this summer.
- 17:43Speaker 3: I mean, and you think about it too, Like last weekend,
- 17:46Speaker 3: for example, we had the Vandalia event going on to
- 17:49Speaker 3: the Capitol. We had the state track meet that was
- 17:52Speaker 3: going on in Charleston, and I know, I'm going to
- 17:54Speaker 3: leave something out. We had the pro road bike races
- 17:57Speaker 3: that were going on. There were so many things going
- 17:59Speaker 3: on just in Charleston last weekend. Graduations, you know, I
- 18:03Speaker 3: mean that's not really tourism per se, but I mean
- 18:05Speaker 3: graduations were going and so many things going on, And
- 18:08Speaker 3: that's the way it is. Pretty much all summer here,
- 18:10Speaker 3: not only in Charleston, but all over West Virginia.
- 18:12Speaker 6: Yeah, and what was really cool this weekend. So I
- 18:14Speaker 6: was over at the Capitol and then I was also
- 18:16Speaker 6: up at Bridge Road where they were having the watch
- 18:18Speaker 6: party on Monday. But the really cool thing is that
- 18:21Speaker 6: you were seeing people in different spots around town. So
- 18:23Speaker 6: they were going down to the Capital for Vandelia, they
- 18:26Speaker 6: were going downtown, then they were up on the hill.
- 18:28Speaker 6: You know, people were moving around and really enjoying all
- 18:30Speaker 6: the different things. And I think that's that's a look
- 18:33Speaker 6: into what the rest of the summer is going to be.
- 18:35Speaker 7: Like.
- 18:35Speaker 6: We've got a bunch of incredible groups who continue to
- 18:38Speaker 6: put on these different festivals and events, and it really
- 18:42Speaker 6: opens up a lot of opportunities for folks who live here,
- 18:44Speaker 6: but also for folks who are coming in. Imagine being
- 18:47Speaker 6: a tourist, like you said, someone who was in town
- 18:49Speaker 6: for graduation and thinking, Wow, this city has a lot
- 18:52Speaker 6: going on this last Weekend's that's one of the reasons
- 18:56Speaker 6: why this is just a great place to live.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Talking again with State Tourism Secretary Chill See Ruby, the
- 19:00Speaker 3: Dave Allen Show on five eighty Live is brought to
- 19:02Speaker 3: you apart by Jute Joot Security Systems. Visit protected by
- 19:06Speaker 3: Jute dot com or follow them on Facebook. You were
- 19:09Speaker 3: on the Midday Show with Amanda and I last week
- 19:11Speaker 3: and we talked a little bit about people choosing to
- 19:14Speaker 3: check out things in West Virginia. You're the state Tourism secretary,
- 19:18Speaker 3: you have been for some time, and you say that
- 19:21Speaker 3: you learn things daily that are going out of state,
- 19:23Speaker 3: but even you didn't even know.
- 19:24Speaker 6: Yeah, there's always new things that I find here or there.
- 19:28Speaker 6: You know, there's things that we have that are growing
- 19:31Speaker 6: and expanding for folks in Kanawk County. I get that
- 19:34Speaker 6: all the time. What's new? What have I not checked out?
- 19:36Speaker 6: So I'll give you you all one kind of tidbit.
- 19:39Speaker 6: Just right outside, just up the interstate a little bit,
- 19:41Speaker 6: are the Elk River on the Elk River rail trail
- 19:45Speaker 6: is rail Explorers. Rail Explorers opened about a year ago.
- 19:48Speaker 6: There the mountain or they're the rail bikes on the
- 19:51Speaker 6: railroad train. Have you done them, Dave, No, I have not.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Very very cool. We need to get you there, but
- 19:56Speaker 6: it's very cool. They're pedal assist. You don't have to
- 19:59Speaker 6: peddle too hard. That's a question, I get all the same.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Now you're speaking my language.
- 20:02Speaker 6: Yeah, so they actually are kind of battery power, so
- 20:05Speaker 6: you have to keep a little motion going. But it's incredible.
- 20:07Speaker 6: There's a waterfall up there, so if you're somebody who
- 20:09Speaker 6: does the West Virginia Waterfall Trail, you can check off
- 20:12Speaker 6: one more waterfall. But a great thing about forty five
- 20:14Speaker 6: minutes from here. I will tell folks do not drive
- 20:17Speaker 6: there without buying tickets in advance, because it's very, very popular,
- 20:21Speaker 6: and a lot of times the different trips throughout the
- 20:23Speaker 6: day sell out. But rail exports cool thing right here,
- 20:26Speaker 6: not too far from home, that I think folks don't
- 20:28Speaker 6: know about.
- 20:29Speaker 3: I mean, and again we were focusing primarily on things
- 20:34Speaker 3: I wanted to hear in the area. But I mean
- 20:38Speaker 3: all over West Virginia I learn I just like you,
- 20:40Speaker 3: I learned new things. But here in the Kanawh Valley.
- 20:42Speaker 3: I mean, I think a gym that a lot of
- 20:45Speaker 3: people from out of state know about and people are
- 20:48Speaker 3: just learning about is the Meek's Mountain Trails. Over in
- 20:51Speaker 3: Putnam County where I live. I mean, they're killing it
- 20:53Speaker 3: over there with it, they are killing it.
- 20:54Speaker 6: That's another place where they continue to grow. And the
- 20:56Speaker 6: thing that's so phenomenal about that is it is driven
- 20:59Speaker 6: by a group of volunteers, super super passionate volunteers who
- 21:02Speaker 6: have worked for years and years to make those trails
- 21:05Speaker 6: what they are and they are outstanding.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Indeed they are. Again we're talking with Chelsea Ruby, the
- 21:09Speaker 3: state Tourism Secretary, and speaking of places to go to
- 21:12Speaker 3: Dave Allen Show and Fine Viti Live is brought to you,
- 21:13Speaker 3: in part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Another Grand Slam school day at the ballpark with first
- 21:19Speaker 3: pitch schedule for ten thirty five this morning. Just go
- 21:22Speaker 3: ahead and take off work the rest of the day, Chelsea,
- 21:23Speaker 3: Let's just go over to the ballpark ten thirty five
- 21:25Speaker 3: first pitch. For more, visit dirty Birds baseball dot com
- 21:28Speaker 3: or check out their social media pages. What else is
- 21:31Speaker 3: on your radar for around the state of West Virginia.
- 21:33Speaker 6: So another cool thing just to open the Great American Bunge.
- 21:36Speaker 6: So it's up in Harper's Ferry. You actually you're tied
- 21:38Speaker 6: into a bungee, you jump into a rock cory. So
- 21:41Speaker 6: they have these in Canada. They just opened in West Virginia.
- 21:43Speaker 6: Brand new has opened in the last couple of weeks.
- 21:46Speaker 6: We're excited about that one. I have not been there,
- 21:49Speaker 6: but I hear it's pretty cool.
- 21:51Speaker 3: It sounds like it. I mean again, and West Virginia
- 21:54Speaker 3: is becoming a tourist destination. But I think we probably
- 21:59Speaker 3: need to do a little bit. No, I don't mean
- 22:00Speaker 3: you personally, your office, but I mean I think we
- 22:02Speaker 3: as West Virginians need to do more to celebrate our
- 22:05Speaker 3: own state. Because the rest of the country is already
- 22:09Speaker 3: catching on to West Virginia and the things we have.
- 22:12Speaker 3: We probably need to do a little bit better job
- 22:14Speaker 3: as West Virginians to appreciate the things we have in
- 22:17Speaker 3: our own state.
- 22:18Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll tell you. Just this weekend, the BBC put
- 22:21Speaker 6: out an article of top places to visit in twenty
- 22:23Speaker 6: twenty five. West Virginia was the only state to make
- 22:25Speaker 6: the list. Super excited to see that. There were a
- 22:28Speaker 6: bunch of destinations, but we were the only state to
- 22:30Speaker 6: get our whole state on the list. But I'll tell you,
- 22:33Speaker 6: when we look at the research of who's coming to
- 22:34Speaker 6: West Virginia, what we see is that seventy five percent
- 22:37Speaker 6: of people who book a trip book it because of
- 22:40Speaker 6: something they saw on a friend or family members social media.
- 22:44Speaker 6: So if you think about that for a second, people
- 22:45Speaker 6: are making their decision plans. Three fourths of them are
- 22:48Speaker 6: making them based on what they see on Facebook or Instagram.
- 22:51Speaker 6: So I would encourage all West Virginians not only to
- 22:54Speaker 6: get out this summer, go explore your home state, but
- 22:56Speaker 6: post a picture inspire somebody you know that lives in
- 22:59Speaker 6: a different place, or somebody in a different corner of
- 23:01Speaker 6: West Virginia to get out and do something great as well.
- 23:03Speaker 3: Now, you were talking when we had you on Metro
- 23:05Speaker 3: News Midday with Amanda Baron and I last week. You
- 23:08Speaker 3: were talking about some things that are going on for
- 23:11Speaker 3: young people in West Virginia. Kids in schools talk about that.
- 23:14Speaker 6: Yeah, Well, when we're looking at tourism as a whole,
- 23:17Speaker 6: we see that the visitation is growing really, really quickly.
- 23:20Speaker 6: But what we see is that the employment in the
- 23:22Speaker 6: industry is not growing quite as quick So we're starting
- 23:25Speaker 6: a number of campaigns to really get people involved in
- 23:28Speaker 6: the industry and to get kids at a young age
- 23:30Speaker 6: interested in it and say these are jobs I want
- 23:32Speaker 6: to stay home in West Virginia for. So in addition
- 23:35Speaker 6: to the Governor's School for tourism, which we'll start here
- 23:37Speaker 6: on June twentieth, in about a month or so. We've
- 23:40Speaker 6: also got a number of things going on. We've got
- 23:42Speaker 6: money available for teachers who want to take their students
- 23:45Speaker 6: on field trips. We find that West Virginia kids a
- 23:47Speaker 6: lot of times they haven't been to places all around
- 23:49Speaker 6: the state, and sometimes they haven't even been to places
- 23:52Speaker 6: in their own county. So we've got that field trip funding.
- 23:55Speaker 6: We've got an online program that's free. It's called Tourism Works.
- 23:58Speaker 6: Anybody in West Virginia can take it and get a
- 24:00Speaker 6: free hour of college credit just by getting online and
- 24:04Speaker 6: taking this class about hospitality. So we've got all kinds
- 24:06Speaker 6: of stuff, and I'm hoping that kids across the state
- 24:09Speaker 6: are starting to perk up. Their ears are starting to
- 24:11Speaker 6: perk up and say, I want to be in tourism
- 24:13Speaker 6: when I grow up, and I can do that here
- 24:15Speaker 6: at home. There's no reason for me to leave the state.
- 24:18Speaker 6: There are good paying jobs in this industry right here
- 24:20Speaker 6: at home.
- 24:21Speaker 3: I mean, when you think about you have a kid
- 24:23Speaker 3: that has an interest in the outdoors, you know, whether
- 24:26Speaker 3: it's ATV trails or any of the things that you mentioned.
- 24:31Speaker 3: I mean are you really going to be working if
- 24:34Speaker 3: you're having that kind of a job and you're having
- 24:36Speaker 3: fun doing it. The old saying is is that if
- 24:38Speaker 3: you find a job you like, you'll never work a
- 24:40Speaker 3: day in your life. I mean, as you said, a
- 24:42Speaker 3: lot of young people may not know these opportunities are available.
- 24:44Speaker 6: Yeah, they are very much available. So over the next
- 24:48Speaker 6: five years, it's projected over twenty thousand annual job openings
- 24:51Speaker 6: in the hospitality and tourism sector in West Virginia, So
- 24:54Speaker 6: twenty thousand each year for the next five years. So
- 24:57Speaker 6: there's a lot of these jobs. Like you said, they
- 24:59Speaker 6: are fun jobs. There's a lot of these jobs where
- 25:01Speaker 6: you're interacting with the public, you're getting to be outside,
- 25:04Speaker 6: you're doing what you love. And the other thing I'll
- 25:06Speaker 6: say about the hospitality industry is there's great upward mobility.
- 25:09Speaker 6: If you think about somebody who starts as a as
- 25:11Speaker 6: a front desk clerk at a hotel, there's a great
- 25:14Speaker 6: possibility if you stick to it and you work really hard,
- 25:17Speaker 6: that you can work your way all the way up
- 25:18Speaker 6: to the hotel manager position. So it's a great industry.
- 25:21Speaker 3: The reason why you couldn't talk about the marketing of
- 25:24Speaker 3: West Virginia to other states. We spent some time talking
- 25:26Speaker 3: about marketing it to our own state. But what do
- 25:29Speaker 3: you do to market this? I mean, you talked about
- 25:32Speaker 3: that BBC report, which I want to get into that
- 25:34Speaker 3: a little bit in depth, but talk about the marketing
- 25:37Speaker 3: that you do elsewhere, because the statistics have shown that,
- 25:44Speaker 3: like I know what the regatta folks in the CVB said,
- 25:46Speaker 3: I mean about how many people that came to the
- 25:48Speaker 3: regatta from d C and from Pittsburgh. I mean almost
- 25:51Speaker 3: as many as came from West Virginia, which is amazing.
- 25:54Speaker 3: What about the marketing aspect of here?
- 25:56Speaker 6: Yeah, so you hit the nail on the head right there.
- 25:58Speaker 6: So are two biggest markets and are too fast growing
- 26:00Speaker 6: markets are DC and Pittsburgh. We market in about a
- 26:04Speaker 6: four to five hour driving distance to the state, so
- 26:08Speaker 6: anywhere you can drive in four to five hours, we're
- 26:10Speaker 6: marketing heavily there. So our marketing strategy, if you're in
- 26:13Speaker 6: any of those cities, you're going to see TV, you're
- 26:16Speaker 6: going to see radio, digital ads, social print, You're going
- 26:19Speaker 6: to see a bunch of different touchpoints. We never want
- 26:21Speaker 6: somebody just to see one ad. So if you think about, well,
- 26:23Speaker 6: McDonald's puts out a new breakfast sandwich, like their goal
- 26:26Speaker 6: is for you to see thirty or forty ads about
- 26:28Speaker 6: that breakfast sandwich. Same thing with West Virginia tourism. So
- 26:31Speaker 6: we want folks to see our ads over and over
- 26:33Speaker 6: and over again. So in those markets, we are marketing
- 26:38Speaker 6: the natural beauty of West Virginia. We're marketing the great towns,
- 26:41Speaker 6: the fairs, the festivals, the arts, all these different things
- 26:45Speaker 6: in those towns, and they see them layered over. So
- 26:47Speaker 6: right now, good example is we just took over Metro
- 26:50Speaker 6: Center station on the DC metro line. So right there
- 26:54Speaker 6: downtown twelfth in g that entire station, every billboard, every wrap,
- 26:59Speaker 6: every wall, well everything in there is wrapped in pictures
- 27:03Speaker 6: of West Virginia. So it's all information about the Eastern
- 27:06Speaker 6: panhandles that what that specific ones about everything says just
- 27:09Speaker 6: one hour away. So we do a lot of these takeovers.
- 27:12Speaker 6: We've also got buses wrapped buses going in DC. Similar
- 27:15Speaker 6: things in Pittsburgh. That we try to make sure that
- 27:18Speaker 6: when we go into a market we make a really
- 27:20Speaker 6: big splash, that we make sure that everyone who lives
- 27:22Speaker 6: there is seeing our ads over and over again.
- 27:25Speaker 3: Can we talk with Chelsea Ruby, the State Tourism Secretary
- 27:27Speaker 3: of the Dave Island Show, on five eighty Live is
- 27:29Speaker 3: brought to you in part by Bridge Valley offering custom
- 27:31Speaker 3: tailored trainings to supply skilled graduates and apprenticeships for your company.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Visit Bridge Valley dot edu. And I want to go
- 27:37Speaker 3: back to West Virginia for a moment talk about the
- 27:38Speaker 3: small towns. Every town in West Virginia's got something going on.
- 27:43Speaker 3: It's seemingly. I mean, I know of every town I'm in.
- 27:46Speaker 3: At the Boone County they have the Coal Festival going on.
- 27:50Speaker 3: In my home area where I'm originally from, Logan, they
- 27:52Speaker 3: have the Freedom Festival, and they've got like country music
- 27:55Speaker 3: superstar Trace Adkins is going to be performing live on
- 27:58Speaker 3: the streets. And for every one one of those there,
- 28:01Speaker 3: every town in West Virginia has got something. There's an
- 28:03Speaker 3: article in the zet mail this morning. I think that
- 28:06Speaker 3: was done by the food guy, Stephen Keith about some
- 28:10Speaker 3: things going on a Bucan and every town's got something
- 28:12Speaker 3: going on.
- 28:12Speaker 6: Yeah, there are fares and festivals throughout West Virginia, especially
- 28:17Speaker 6: over the summer months and into the fall. I could
- 28:20Speaker 6: go on and on about each and every one of them.
- 28:22Speaker 6: What I like is that they're all different, that each
- 28:25Speaker 6: one of these really has a local flare on them.
- 28:27Speaker 6: It's really unique to the area that they're in. So
- 28:29Speaker 6: but Cannon just ad their strawberry festival. We've got all
- 28:32Speaker 6: these different groups who do things. We've got the apple
- 28:35Speaker 6: Harvest festival that'll go up in the northern part of
- 28:37Speaker 6: the state when we get into the fall. You can
- 28:39Speaker 6: find all these farsom festivals on our website wvtourism dot com.
- 28:43Speaker 6: And I'll tell you that if you go to our
- 28:44Speaker 6: website and go to that event's calendar, it's the fourth
- 28:47Speaker 6: or fifth most visited page on our website every month.
- 28:50Speaker 6: So what we see is that West Virginians go there
- 28:52Speaker 6: to get their information. But a lot of people when
- 28:54Speaker 6: they're in town visiting, they're looking for something to do,
- 28:57Speaker 6: they want to go to a local event, and they
- 28:59Speaker 6: go in these. So we still find in all of
- 29:01Speaker 6: our survey research each year that local events, like becoming
- 29:04Speaker 6: a local, living like a local for a weekend is
- 29:07Speaker 6: what people want to do. So these fares and festivals,
- 29:09Speaker 6: I always tell them when I meet with folks who
- 29:11Speaker 6: are organizing, not only are you doing something really great
- 29:14Speaker 6: for your community, but you're also providing something really great
- 29:17Speaker 6: for guests who are in town on the weekend with
- 29:19Speaker 6: your festival.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Go back to that BBC article you reference a little bit. Oh,
- 29:23Speaker 3: that's that's pretty good stuff.
- 29:24Speaker 6: Good stuff. Yeah, you know, it used to be that
- 29:26Speaker 6: we never made these lists. And when I first got here,
- 29:29Speaker 6: I kind of banged my head on the wall eight
- 29:31Speaker 6: years ago saying like, why do these lists come out
- 29:33Speaker 6: every day and West Virginia is never on them? Every
- 29:35Speaker 6: travel publication does one, and we changed strategies. What we
- 29:39Speaker 6: started doing is we invite editors, travel editors and writers
- 29:42Speaker 6: to West Virginia. So we just had eight of them
- 29:45Speaker 6: who left here about a week ago. We're constantly bringing
- 29:48Speaker 6: in more and more of them. And what we found
- 29:50Speaker 6: is when we bring these travel writers and editors to
- 29:52Speaker 6: West Virginia and host them for a weekend, let them
- 29:55Speaker 6: really explore West Virginia, they leave with a completely different impression.
- 30:00Speaker 6: The last four or five years, we've gotten all the
- 30:01Speaker 6: big lists, We've gotten Lonely, Planet, Conde, NAS, Travel and
- 30:04Speaker 6: Leisure USA. Today all these groups are starting to put
- 30:07Speaker 6: West Virginia on their list of top places to visit
- 30:10Speaker 6: and this weekend, we got to add one more with
- 30:12Speaker 6: the BBC.
- 30:12Speaker 3: And we were the only state.
- 30:14Speaker 6: We were the only state.
- 30:15Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 30:15Speaker 6: The other ones were city destinations, and they gave us
- 30:17Speaker 6: the whole state. And last two years ago we got
- 30:20Speaker 6: a similar one with Lonely Planet, which is a big
- 30:22Speaker 6: international publication. They did the World's Greatest Places, and they
- 30:26Speaker 6: did the same thing. They gave us the whole state.
- 30:29Speaker 3: I mean, that's pretty good. I mean when you think
- 30:31Speaker 3: about it, because West Virginia, although it is a smaller state,
- 30:34Speaker 3: we got a lot going on in every corner of
- 30:37Speaker 3: the state. There is something. Quickly and then actually have
- 30:40Speaker 3: a couple of texts for you people with questions, but
- 30:43Speaker 3: then we'll let you go because I know you got
- 30:44Speaker 3: a busy day planned for today. Talk about West Virginia
- 30:48Speaker 3: as a food destination because I know here in the
- 30:51Speaker 3: Charleston area. Of course we all know about Chef Paul,
- 30:53Speaker 3: but there's so many other people in addition to him.
- 30:55Speaker 3: He'd be the first to tell you that are doing
- 30:57Speaker 3: great things. Huntington is an incredible food town right now,
- 31:00Speaker 3: the Morgantown area, Martinsburg. We just had the Mayor of
- 31:02Speaker 3: Martinsburg on the midday show what's Tradeon's becoming a food
- 31:05Speaker 3: destination as well. And it's not just biscuits and gravy,
- 31:08Speaker 3: although there's nothing wrong with biscuits and gravy.
- 31:10Speaker 6: Hey, I love biscuits and gravy as much as anyone else.
- 31:12Speaker 6: But you're right. So when you look at vacation planning trends,
- 31:15Speaker 6: foody culture, foody destinations certainly becoming a trend. We're seeing
- 31:20Speaker 6: that as many as fifty percent of people who plan
- 31:22Speaker 6: vacations in the US last year planned it specifically to
- 31:25Speaker 6: go to a restaurant.
- 31:26Speaker 3: That sounds like me.
- 31:27Speaker 6: Yeah, so we when we travel, we plan out all
- 31:30Speaker 6: of our meals, we look at all the restaurants. So
- 31:31Speaker 6: it's something I can certainly relate to. But what's really
- 31:33Speaker 6: cool is that we're seeing that trend e merge at
- 31:36Speaker 6: the same time that we're really seeing an emergence of
- 31:38Speaker 6: food in West Virginia with all these different restaurants. Last year,
- 31:42Speaker 6: of course, we had another James Beard nomination over at
- 31:46Speaker 6: restaurant a Breusy here in town. We had chef Paul
- 31:48Speaker 6: Wynnet the year before Jim's, and Huntington has gotten a
- 31:51Speaker 6: lot of recognition. We've got all these places but then
- 31:54Speaker 6: we've got cool other places that maybe aren't the more
- 31:57Speaker 6: elevated food we've got, you know, hillbilly hot dogs and
- 32:00Speaker 6: places like that. I love Dixie's Dairy things like that,
- 32:03Speaker 6: and so we're seeing that those are becoming increasingly more
- 32:05Speaker 6: important popular.
- 32:07Speaker 3: All I head a text here says ask the Tourism
- 32:09Speaker 3: Secretary to take a look at Greenbrier straight from the
- 32:11Speaker 3: airport to the Capitol. Need to spend some money making
- 32:13Speaker 3: this area shine, as it's the first look to welcome
- 32:16Speaker 3: you into West Virginia. And I don't know if it's
- 32:19Speaker 3: something that necessarily you can handle, but I think it's
- 32:21Speaker 3: a good point.
- 32:21Speaker 6: I think it's a good point. You know, I talked
- 32:23Speaker 6: to Dominique. I've actually already talked to her today. At
- 32:25Speaker 6: the airport. We do a lot of work with them,
- 32:27Speaker 6: certainly something that is important. I know they put that
- 32:30Speaker 6: new welcome sign in year before last, but I agree
- 32:33Speaker 6: beautification up there matters. And I'll all send a text
- 32:36Speaker 6: over to the Highways Commissioner and see if we can
- 32:38Speaker 6: get something going there.
- 32:38Speaker 3: All right, final text, and we'll let you go. A
- 32:40Speaker 3: lot of us says a texture like amusement parks, why
- 32:43Speaker 3: not bring back the Kenawha County Fair. Hold it at
- 32:45Speaker 3: the Shawnee Sports Complex or the empty lots at South Reach.
- 32:48Speaker 6: You know that's an idea I haven't heard it. Sounds
- 32:50Speaker 6: like a pretty good idea. We can look into it.
- 32:52Speaker 3: We'll look into it. Hey, Chelsea, I appreciate you being
- 32:54Speaker 3: here as always.
- 32:55Speaker 6: Thank you appreciate it on.

- 36:15Speaker 3: the show. Morgan Morgan, are you there? All right? We
- 36:23Speaker 3: have no Morgan, the A train is working as we speak.
- 36:34Speaker 3: All right, I guess we have no phone. That's what
- 36:37Speaker 3: I'm hearing. All I'm not hearing anything. Well, Morgan, we apologize.
- 36:41Speaker 3: We don't know what the problem is. Well, are you there, Morgan?
- 36:44Speaker 13: Can you hear me? Yeah?
- 36:45Speaker 3: There you are there, You are all right.
- 36:47Speaker 13: Welcome morning. I don't know what happened.
- 36:50Speaker 3: We got you now, that's all that matters. Welcome to
- 36:52Speaker 3: the show.
- 36:53Speaker 7: Thanks to Dave. Good morning.
- 36:55Speaker 3: So the Putnam County Development Authority has purchased a this
- 37:00Speaker 3: this big old tract of land, and actually it's it's
- 37:03Speaker 3: more than just land, it's a whole dang complex. Tell
- 37:06Speaker 3: us about this.
- 37:08Speaker 13: Yeah, Putnam County Development Authority closed on an industrial building
- 37:12Speaker 13: in Putnam County. It's a little bit more than eighty
- 37:15Speaker 13: four thousand square feet. This has been many months in
- 37:18Speaker 13: the making, and we're just so excited that we are
- 37:20Speaker 13: going to have property available for industry. It's it's going
- 37:25Speaker 13: to be right in front of the new I sixty
- 37:28Speaker 13: four Cologne and Exit Dave. So it's going to be
- 37:31Speaker 13: prime for any type of distribution or logistics.
- 37:35Speaker 3: So who would be the ideal tenant for this morning?
- 37:38Speaker 13: So really, anybody who is going to be distributing goods?
- 37:41Speaker 13: I mean, we you cannot get any closer. I mean
- 37:44Speaker 13: I can honestly throw a rock to the interstate from
- 37:46Speaker 13: the building. But you're going to be right on I
- 37:48Speaker 13: sixty four. And then how close we are to the
- 37:51Speaker 13: I seventy seven I seventy nine interchange into Ohio. You know,
- 37:54Speaker 13: we can be within half of the US population within
- 37:58Speaker 13: a day's drive. Any type of good that somebody would
- 38:01Speaker 13: be distributing would really be ideal for this location.
- 38:04Speaker 3: And again, the area is really growing and it's about
- 38:08Speaker 3: to grow even more, and you alluded to it with
- 38:10Speaker 3: that I sixty four colloding interchange right.
- 38:13Speaker 13: Yes, so it's set to be complete in follows twenty
- 38:16Speaker 13: twenty six. It's under construction right now and this building,
- 38:21Speaker 13: you know, is going to be right in front of
- 38:23Speaker 13: that exit. So our board of directors felt like it
- 38:25Speaker 13: was a really good move for PCDA to purchase it.
- 38:28Speaker 13: And you know, David, it's great to tell businesses about
- 38:32Speaker 13: why they should come to West Virginia, why they should
- 38:34Speaker 13: come to Putdham County. But if you don't have anywhere
- 38:36Speaker 13: to put them, you don't really have You're kind of
- 38:38Speaker 13: a salesman without any product to sell. So we're excited
- 38:42Speaker 13: to actually have available inventory to solicit new investment in
- 38:46Speaker 13: West Virginia.
- 38:47Speaker 3: So how do you go about marketing this place?
- 38:49Speaker 2: Morgan?
- 38:50Speaker 13: Well, you're helping, so thank you.
- 38:52Speaker 6: There's one, there's one, there's one down.
- 38:55Speaker 13: But you know what, we've we've actually been working behind
- 38:58Speaker 13: the scenes some already at trade before we even closed.
- 39:02Speaker 13: We have a lot of folks that are interested in
- 39:04Speaker 13: the area. With all of the residential homes that we
- 39:06Speaker 13: have coming on the market, but also following the new
- 39:09Speaker 13: core project in Apple Growth. But we've also been sharing
- 39:14Speaker 13: it with our news channels, so you might see it
- 39:17Speaker 13: in the news in the next day or two. But
- 39:19Speaker 13: also we've been behind the scenes reaching out to businesses,
- 39:23Speaker 13: site consultants in different companies that we think would have interest,
- 39:27Speaker 13: and we have some that are already interested, which is
- 39:29Speaker 13: really great.
- 39:30Speaker 3: I mean, I know you can't tell us a whole
- 39:31Speaker 3: lot about it right now, but can you are you
- 39:35Speaker 3: at liberty to give us a HNT on any of
- 39:36Speaker 3: those it might be interested or not?
- 39:38Speaker 13: Well, honestly, honestly, Dave, like I would hate to share
- 39:41Speaker 13: anything that wouldn't come to fruition, but I mean I will,
- 39:44Speaker 13: I will stand by. It was utilized as a distribution
- 39:47Speaker 13: facility before we closed, and that's really it's really what
- 39:52Speaker 13: the dirt tells you. It's eighty four thousand square feet,
- 39:55Speaker 13: it's got twelve doc doors, it's enough space for late down.
- 40:01Speaker 13: You know, it's already remote gated. So if the building
- 40:05Speaker 13: just tells you anything, it tells you that it would
- 40:08Speaker 13: be ideal for distributions.
- 40:09Speaker 3: And what was there before Morgan, what operated out there, so.
- 40:15Speaker 13: There was a US Food. They were the owner of
- 40:18Speaker 13: the building. They're maintaining their other location on Virginia Avenue.
- 40:22Speaker 13: But actually it was built for Continental Cam Company back
- 40:26Speaker 13: back in the day, so it was actually a manufacturing
- 40:28Speaker 13: plant when it was originally built.
- 40:30Speaker 3: So do we have I mean, is it ready to
- 40:33Speaker 3: go now? Is it a turnkey type deal or what?
- 40:37Speaker 13: So the distribution space is turnkey, somebody could move their
- 40:40Speaker 13: goods in tomorrow. The office space is going to be
- 40:42Speaker 13: built out according to what the tenant is wanting. But
- 40:46Speaker 13: the distribution space is.
- 40:47Speaker 3: Ready to go, and you're looking at least in this
- 40:49Speaker 3: out I understand. And again I love the fact that
- 40:53Speaker 3: you talked about being I think sometimes in West Virginia
- 40:57Speaker 3: we forget how close we are to the mate And
- 41:00Speaker 3: I just talked about it with the Tourism secretary. How
- 41:02Speaker 3: close we are to d C. How close we are
- 41:05Speaker 3: to Pittsburgh and Charlotte, in Cleveland and Cincinnati, and I
- 41:09Speaker 3: mean a day's drive with as you said, a large
- 41:12Speaker 3: percentage of the US population. And we got rails, we
- 41:15Speaker 3: got water, we got a lot going for us here
- 41:18Speaker 3: in West Virginia.
- 41:19Speaker 13: Absolutely, this building is actually just adjacent to a CSX
- 41:23Speaker 13: rail line. So it could even be rail served. But
- 41:25Speaker 13: you know, sometimes I like to turn challenges into opportunities.
- 41:29Speaker 13: States Did you ever travel and you talk to someone,
- 41:31Speaker 13: You're like, I'm from West Virginia. Have you ever been there?
- 41:34Speaker 13: And their answer is no, But I've driven through it
- 41:36Speaker 13: and it's like, oh man, you've got a visit, right.
- 41:38Speaker 13: But if people are driving through it, that points to
- 41:41Speaker 13: the fact that we are close to everything around us.
- 41:43Speaker 13: We are logistically we are perfectly located for companies who
- 41:49Speaker 13: want to be on the East Coast.
- 41:51Speaker 3: I mean, and I'm not going to be the one
- 41:54Speaker 3: to say West Virginia doesn't have its problems, because West Virginia,
- 41:57Speaker 3: like all states and all communities and all cities, we
- 41:59Speaker 3: do have problems. But we've also got a lot of
- 42:01Speaker 3: positive things going on as well. And I really I
- 42:04Speaker 3: think it just goes to show you how much potential
- 42:08Speaker 3: that there is in this area, and specifically in Putnham County.
- 42:12Speaker 3: I'm a little bit biased because that's where I live,
- 42:14Speaker 3: you know, and I'm the unofficial mayor of Tayes Valley.
- 42:18Speaker 3: They tell me that's what TJ. Meadow's coused me. But
- 42:20Speaker 3: people talk about the growth of the area that it
- 42:24Speaker 3: saw back in the nineteen nineties. I wasn't living there then,
- 42:27Speaker 3: but you reference new Core with New Core coming in,
- 42:29Speaker 3: and many of those families are choosing to live in
- 42:34Speaker 3: the Putnam County area because we have some of the
- 42:37Speaker 3: best schools in the state. We have an insanely low
- 42:40Speaker 3: crime rate compared to other areas, great places to dine,
- 42:43Speaker 3: great places to shop, locally owned businesses and things of that.
- 42:46Speaker 3: Plus you got this right down the road from where
- 42:48Speaker 3: I live. You've got this massive housing complex going in
- 42:51Speaker 3: that's pretty much going to double or triple the amount
- 42:54Speaker 3: of traffic on Taes Valley Road. And people that have
- 42:57Speaker 3: heard me say on this show many many times, you
- 43:00Speaker 3: never hear me complain about a traffic problem. I may
- 43:02Speaker 3: complain about the drivers and the stupid decisions they make,
- 43:05Speaker 3: but as far as traffic products, because that's a sign
- 43:07Speaker 3: of growth, and that's just another another feather in the
- 43:10Speaker 3: proverbial cap of what's going on in the Putnam County
- 43:12Speaker 3: and really, for that matter, the entire Advantage Corridor area.
- 43:16Speaker 13: We have so much going on, David. Honestly, I'm really
- 43:19Speaker 13: proud of my team and my board for being proactive.
- 43:22Speaker 13: You know, we've been proactive on housing. I've been on
- 43:24Speaker 13: the show talking about that before. So we want to
- 43:26Speaker 13: see holistic development in Putnam County. We have over a
- 43:30Speaker 13: thousand units being built over the next three years in
- 43:33Speaker 13: Putnam County. For housing, we're working on workforce development with
- 43:36Speaker 13: starting apprenticeships and we have this Hometown Advantage campaign talking
- 43:40Speaker 13: about skilled trades in West Virginia. But then we're also
- 43:43Speaker 13: working on site development, like purchasing this property and trying
- 43:47Speaker 13: to get new businesses or even help a local business
- 43:50Speaker 13: who needs to grow by retaining them with this piece
- 43:52Speaker 13: of property. So we see economic development as basically one
- 43:57Speaker 13: big pie, right, You've got to focus on all these
- 44:00Speaker 13: different areas. And I'm really proud that we have such
- 44:02Speaker 13: a small team, but we're really working in all these
- 44:04Speaker 13: different avenues to try to increase the tax space and
- 44:08Speaker 13: also create jobs. And I'm going to pause for a
- 44:11Speaker 13: second too and say I'm increasing the tax space. We
- 44:14Speaker 13: don't want all of the tax burden to be on
- 44:17Speaker 13: our residents. We know our bedroom community, so that means
- 44:21Speaker 13: that we've got to have more private investment in the area.
- 44:24Speaker 13: And you know that's one of the reasons that we
- 44:26Speaker 13: want to in this building. We want to leave the building.
- 44:28Speaker 13: We want to make sure that we're supporting the business community,
- 44:31Speaker 13: but also that we're supporting our residents of Pudham County
- 44:33Speaker 13: as well.
- 44:34Speaker 3: We have a text to the show here. Somebody ask
- 44:36Speaker 3: any updates on a business in Fraser's Bottom at Putnam County.
- 44:38Speaker 3: Anything new on that front. I know they've been to
- 44:40Speaker 3: talk about about a business possibly going over there. You
- 44:42Speaker 3: don't have to get into specifics, but is there anything
- 44:44Speaker 3: new to report? There?
- 44:46Speaker 13: Nothing new to report, There has been nothing solidified at
- 44:49Speaker 13: this time.
- 44:50Speaker 3: All right, very good? All right. So somebody is interested
- 44:53Speaker 3: Morgan in looking at this property, moving their location their
- 44:57Speaker 3: business there. What do they need to do?
- 45:00Speaker 13: They need to call me three oh four seven, five
- 45:02Speaker 13: seven or three one eight pretty easy to find and
- 45:05Speaker 13: get a hold of. Just reach out to my team.
- 45:07Speaker 13: We'd love to show you the building and tell you
- 45:09Speaker 13: why you should locate in Putnam County, West Virginia.

- 48:35Speaker 3: nine three five five zero zero eight. The big stories,
- 48:39Speaker 3: well a couple of them locally yesterday, had to do
- 48:41Speaker 3: with the shooting at Sheets in Kanawha County, Kanah City
- 48:44Speaker 3: of kanawc County and the Green Power layoffs. Chris with
- 48:47Speaker 3: the lead story this morning at the website, and the
- 48:49Speaker 3: shooting happened just after midnight early yesterday morning. Charleston p
- 48:54Speaker 3: D's Tony Haslett says the victim, forty two year old
- 48:56Speaker 3: Tiffany Adkins of Marmette, was shot as she was walking
- 49:00Speaker 3: into the Sheets on a corcl in Kanas City, and
- 49:02Speaker 3: according to Hazlett, she simply was walking into the store
- 49:07Speaker 3: and passed in front of a vehicle. Near the vehicle
- 49:09Speaker 3: standing was eighteen year old Jacob Fields of Charleston. He
- 49:13Speaker 3: allegedly wiping down the barrel of a gun when it discharged.
- 49:16Speaker 3: She's been charged with wanton endangerment and involuntary manslaughter. It
- 49:20Speaker 3: was a legal gun. He is being held in the
- 49:23Speaker 3: South Central Regional Jail on fifty thousand dollars bailed. Just
- 49:27Speaker 3: a horrible story there. The other story about the GreenPower layoffs,
- 49:30Speaker 3: and by the way, mister Meadows did an excellent commentary
- 49:33Speaker 3: about the layoffs available on social media and also at
- 49:35Speaker 3: the website. The company in part is at least blaming tariffs,
- 49:40Speaker 3: but TJ does a deep dive to the business practices
- 49:42Speaker 3: have said company, and this company, I'm put in it mildly,
- 49:47Speaker 3: has had a lot of issues. I actually had a
- 49:51Speaker 3: comment on Dave Alan Radio and Facebook on an article
- 49:54Speaker 3: that I shared from our website, and an actual employee commented,
- 50:01Speaker 3: in his words, not mine, the worst company I've ever
- 50:04Speaker 3: worked for. Again his words, not mine. He was one
- 50:06Speaker 3: of the ones that was laid off, and of course
- 50:08Speaker 3: that's his story. I would be glad to have others,
- 50:11Speaker 3: you know, from the countail to the company side as
- 50:13Speaker 3: well anytime on the show, and time will tell what
- 50:16Speaker 3: actually does come from all this, But it doesn't look
- 50:18Speaker 3: good on the surface. Tjan and Wilson. We'll have more
- 50:21Speaker 3: than the story coming up on talk line. Older adults
- 50:24Speaker 3: should protect themselves against severe respiratory disease. Talk to your
- 50:27Speaker 3: doctor about flu, COVID nineteen and RSV vaccines risk less,
- 50:30Speaker 3: do more get started vaccines dot gov paid for by
- 50:33Speaker 3: the US Department of Health and Human Services. Text says
- 50:37Speaker 3: the Tays Valley and Hurricane area need roundabouts. Please bring
- 50:41Speaker 3: the roundabouts and eliminate future plans for additional stoplights. Stoplights
- 50:45Speaker 3: caused congestion. Roundabouts do not, and I don't disagree with
- 50:49Speaker 3: what the text is saying. This person as texted and
- 50:52Speaker 3: others have texted the show before about roundabouts. My only
- 50:55Speaker 3: thing with roundabouts says you heard me say it before.
- 50:57Speaker 3: West Virginians can't handle a three way stop, how are
- 51:00Speaker 3: we going to handle roundabouts? So but not a bad
- 51:03Speaker 3: idea in theory. Tex says, if you read the story
- 51:05Speaker 3: of Elon's rocket ship blowing up all that government money
- 51:08Speaker 3: up in flames, kind of some bolic consider an Elon
- 51:10Speaker 3: slashing and burning the government. But we got to go
- 51:13Speaker 3: to Mars or at least build new missiles, and the
- 51:15Speaker 3: guys of going to Mars heaven is real. Jesus is
- 51:18Speaker 3: going to be asking a lot of Americans. So you
- 51:20Speaker 3: chose building missiles over food, housing and healthcare for the poor,
- 51:24Speaker 3: then he's going to open up the trap door in
- 51:26Speaker 3: the cloud floor, cloud floor. I don't know how you
- 51:29Speaker 3: follow up with that. TJ. Meadows, bail me, man, bail me.
- 51:32Speaker 15: Go read your Bible. Okay, I do it every day.
- 51:35Speaker 15: Go read your Bible. Okay, Love God, love people. There
- 51:38Speaker 15: you go, There you go.
- 51:39Speaker 3: It's that easy. So you guys are going to get
- 51:41Speaker 3: into the green power story a little bit more on
- 51:43Speaker 3: talk On today, right, Yeah, we're going to.
- 51:44Speaker 15: Dive into it a little bit. Mitch Carmichael is going
- 51:46Speaker 15: to join us at ten oh six. You know, he's
- 51:49Speaker 15: been an architect of economic development in this state for
- 51:52Speaker 15: some time. And I think that one of the larger
- 51:55Speaker 15: narratives in this story is to say, do we have
- 51:58Speaker 15: the stomach for this in West Virginia. So, you know,
- 52:01Speaker 15: venture capital, private equity place ten bets one or two
- 52:04Speaker 15: may pan, right, So it's not really that surprising when
- 52:08Speaker 15: you look at it that we've had a failure here
- 52:10Speaker 15: with green power, But does the state have the stomach
- 52:13Speaker 15: for that? I don't know that we necessarily bail out
- 52:16Speaker 15: of what folks like the Economic Development Authority, and those
- 52:19Speaker 15: folks do I think, you know, we have some winners.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Do we have some losers? Sure, But that's the game.
- 52:24Speaker 3: That's the way it works. I mean, it's all based
- 52:26Speaker 3: on speculation anyway. I mean, I mean, obviously there's a
- 52:28Speaker 3: lot of data that goes into it, but it can
- 52:31Speaker 3: sometimes be a crapshoot and it can be that's business. Yeah,
- 52:35Speaker 3: that's business. That's the way it works.
- 52:36Speaker 15: Now, this particular company, as you said, a lot of issues.
- 52:41Speaker 3: I don't think tariffs.
- 52:42Speaker 15: Maybe tariffs was the nail on the coffin, It's not
- 52:44Speaker 15: what started this deal, all right.
- 52:46Speaker 3: Those guys will be coming up with talk Line ten
- 52:48Speaker 3: oh six. I'll be back with thirteen News in tonight
