- 0:12I'm Steve Randall. This year's SOM Leadership Conference takes place
- 0:17on Thursday the 8th of October from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
- 0:22It's a hybrid event in London and online and is
- 0:25an inclusive day for all disciplines, offering inspiration to develop
- 0:28your leadership skills. This year's theme is human leadership in
- 0:32a changing world, looking after your own well-being, the well-being
- 0:35of your team and the benefits this has for your
- 0:37business as a whole. Click the link in the show
- 0:40notes for more info and to register. The BMJ is
- 0:44calling for young people to get mental health and employment
- 0:46support before they receive a formal diagnosis. It follows the
- 0:51Milburn Review, which found almost 1,000,000 16 to 24-year-olds in
- 0:54the UK are not in education, work or training. The
- 0:58authors of a BMJ article say services should focus on
- 1:01how problems such as anxiety, neurodiversity or stress affect daily life,
- 1:06rather than on diagnostic labels alone. They highlight long waits
- 1:10for specialist help, including autism assessments, and argue that health, education,
- 1:14welfare and employment services need to work together to prevent
- 1:18young people falling through the gaps. Campaigners are calling on
- 1:23the Health and Safety Executive to recognise work-related suicide... as
- 1:26a reportable workplace death. In an open letter signed by researchers, unions,
- 1:31charities and bereaved families, they estimate that around 600 suicides
- 1:35in the UK each year may be linked to work.
- 1:38They say current rules mean these deaths are often not
- 1:40recorded and not investigated, leaving risks unaddressed. The signatories point
- 1:46to the death of headteacher Ruth Perry, where an inquest
- 1:49found an Ofsted inspection had contributed to her suicide. They
- 1:53say clearer reporting could help employers identify harmful workplace pressures
- 1:57and prevent further deaths. Some events in September include GDPR
- 2:03and implementation of diversity issues in a workplace on 7th
- 2:07September are fit notes for purpose. Monday 28th September and

- 2:45on the SOM podcast, are Z scores a breath of
- 2:48fresh air for spirometry?
- 2:49Speaker 2: You might have a younger person who blows normal, normal, normal, normal,
- 2:54but actually every year the drop is bigger than what
- 2:57you would expect for the normal expected age-related decline. The
- 3:02spirometry might still be saying normal because they can blow
- 3:04above that percentage. I mean, even with the Z scores,
- 3:09they might still be able to be normal, but you've
- 3:11got to look at that longitudinal change. It's not just
- 3:15a one-off.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And what can we learn from Aussie physios?
- 3:19Speaker 3: The opportunities that the physios have in Australia to undertake
- 3:24occupational health practices is far greater in Australia than it
- 3:28is in the UK. And that is possibly due to
- 3:33the differences that they have within their compensation, their workers'
- 3:38compensation scheme, which provides medical care, income support and rehab
- 3:43for people who are injured at work. And this has
- 3:45a strong emphasis on early intervention, collaboration and safe return
- 3:49to work through the state-based compensation schemes.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Listen out for those full episodes and plenty more on
- 3:56the way soon. SOM members get all the news first
