- 3:11information on that. But for today, now that I've got
- 3:14all that stuff out of the way, then welcome onto the show.
- 3:17My guest for this week. His name is David and he's been
- 3:20of guest actually on the show here.
- 3:22I think a season or so ago, David, right.
- 3:24You were here, I think maybe last season to talk about like a
- 3:27gatekeeping and heathenry and some things that were on your
- 3:29mind about that point. But you're up.
- 3:31You're back here today checking in from a little bit South of
- 3:34me, I think in Columbia, TN, right?
- 3:36Correct. Yeah.
- 3:37So welcome back, man. It's good to have you.
- 3:39Good to be here. Yeah, you're looking healthy
- 3:41looking, looking good. The beard's looking great.
- 3:43You know that. I was got to, I was got to give
- 3:45props for that because, you know, I'm over here just rocking
- 3:49the little, the little goat because it won't do anything
- 3:52more. But I got all this other head
- 3:53hair that that that keeps me. See, that's where you got me.
- 3:57Yeah, you. Know.
- 3:59Yours just retreated a little bit further.
- 4:02It migrated S quite a bit. I actually haven't seen my face
- 4:06since 2019. So yeah, it's been a thing and I
- 4:12have to put it up at work, keep it in beard bands so it stays
- 4:17out of out of my job, but it's worth it to me.
- 4:20I, I, I like having it. I get a lot of compliments on it
- 4:23now that it's yeah, I keep it up.
- 4:25So you know. Yeah, definitely you, yeah, I
- 4:28mean you, you've got the right facial structure.
- 4:30You, you got it down the design that the, the, the grooming of
- 4:33it. So it looks good.
- 4:34And yeah, great to have you back here.
- 4:36I know we're going to get into some some things that you're
- 4:39doing work wise. You have a you have a business
- 4:43that you're kind of getting into with leather and metal.
- 4:47I guess we'll see. So and to get into that and then
- 4:50you obviously you are a heathen, refresh my memory and our
- 4:55audience with the the length of time that you've been doing
- 4:59Heathenry. I honestly think it happened
- 5:06somewhere around 2019, 2018-2019.
- 5:11I can't remember the exact time. I had about two inches of hair
- 5:17on my head and very little beard.
- 5:21Barely long enough to braid. Actually went to a friend of
- 5:23mine at work and had him braid my beard.
- 5:26It was about that much of A braid. 2 little braids and he
- 5:30shaved the runes for Loki and Thor in the sides of my head.
- 5:37Because I was going to do a cosplay at Ren Fair the next
- 5:41year as as a Viking, I had dabbled a little, looked into a
- 5:47little this and that. And when I went to sleep that
- 5:50day, because I'm a night shift worker, I had in my vision, in
- 5:57my mind, it was a vision. It wasn't a dream because I can
- 6:00still remember every detail six years later.
- 6:03And in that, in the essence of the end is the only thing that I
- 6:08remember symbol wise was an upwards arrow, which I didn't
- 6:12know what it was. And obviously most of y'all know
- 6:16that's tear. So I felt like tears spoke to me
- 6:19and put me on my path then. So I've been, I went vanilla or
- 6:24buying it, whatever you want. I didn't read books.
- 6:27I went by how I felt, by what I gleaned as proper from TV shows,
- 6:33movies, things like that. I knew some of it wasn't
- 6:36accurate. I knew some of it.
- 6:37Well, I figured out some of it was and, you know, started
- 6:41working on an altar and that's when I decided to start picking
- 6:44up books, trying to figure out the proper way as best as I
- 6:47could. And then I found my kindred
- 6:51through a bar that is no longer open in Columbia called Asgard
- 6:56Brewing Company. And we became the Kindred of
- 6:59Asgard, which we still are, even though the bar is no longer with
- 7:03us. And so we are, we're a growing
- 7:06group of heathens. We are about to welcome our
- 7:10first female member soon. So that'll be a, a good mix.
- 7:15You know, we're good. We're family anyways.
- 7:17They're allowed to hang with us, but they're not, haven't been
- 7:20allowed in the spirit in the circle when we do ritual.
- 7:24So that's going to change. But I I think it's for the
- 7:27better. Yeah.
- 7:29So, so about six years when you, when you first kind of came into
- 7:34it, you, you were in an area that had a already existing
- 7:38kindred or or group. No, or, or was that actually we,
- 7:43I was a founding member. We call it the OG member.
- 7:47So me and a bunch of guys that believed followed and, and, and,
- 7:53and one of them has been heathen his whole life.
- 7:55He's 63. He, he and I talked and we drank
- 8:01and we realized that there was now four of us and then five of
- 8:04us and then six of us. And we're like, OK, this is
- 8:07cool. We can make a brotherhood.
- 8:08And I thought, no, why don't we make a kindred, a brotherhood, a
- 8:12clan, whatever you want to call it.
- 8:13Let's make this happen because I think it's a great idea.
- 8:17We can do rituals and we can. And I had this whole thing and
- 8:20within six months we had our first ritual and we had a name
- 8:24and we had a symbol and all this stuff.
- 8:27So we really rolled fast on that once we got the yes, we're going
- 8:31to do this and it's been great. Now, did you know what was that
- 8:40about? Yeah, sorry about that.
- 8:42I had a glitch on my screen. Did you know these guys or did
- 8:45you know any of these people for any length of time prior to
- 8:49going into forming this, this kindred with them?
- 8:53No, I met them all at Asgard. That's where we all.
- 8:57That's cool, man. You kind of, I mean, that's like
- 9:00luck was on your side. I guess you could say, 'cause
- 9:02you know, how many people out here have this desire to want to
- 9:06be part of something and they're in an area where it doesn't seem
- 9:08like there are other like minded folks, you know what I mean?
- 9:13So that's like they're struggling to find that
- 9:14community, find that, that home, if you will, and then and then
- 9:19do the things that it means to make it that home, right, 'cause
- 9:22I think some people get, get, they find something that is, you
- 9:29know, very nice. So it sounds cool or looks cool,
- 9:31but then they don't, they don't contribute in any way.
- 9:34They just hang around, you know, they like to hang out.
- 9:38It's, it's more of like a, a club sort of a thing, you know
- 9:42what I mean? But they don't do any, they
- 9:43don't help out with anything. They don't contribute.
- 9:45And it becomes like, why are you even here?
- 9:47Like what are we doing? Right.
- 9:49So that's part of the the I think.
- 9:52I can't remember the word you used for it, running, watching,
- 9:58having people come in as but we, we run it like a bikers club
- 10:02where you're a hang around. So you, if you what you find us
- 10:05or we find you, we'll invite you to hang at a bar or hang out
- 10:09where we hang out outside of our homes.
- 10:12And if you hang out and get to know us, we start figuring out
- 10:17whether you're real or whether you're just here for the party
- 10:19or or whatever like that, or just because Vikings are cool
- 10:23right now or whatever. And then once we realize you're
- 10:27serious and you and you really want to be a part of us, then we
- 10:29bring you in as a prospect, which means you get invited to
- 10:32ritual, but not within the circle.
- 10:34You get to see the private part of us, the the bonfire, the
- 10:38prayers we say at ritual, the and share in the food and share
- 10:42in the Mead and things like that.
- 10:44And it, it brings them, it lets them decide, yes, this is what I
- 10:50want to be a part of. And it lets us see are they
- 10:53serious and that that's a two way St.
- 10:56And then, you know, most of our prospects do end up working out.
- 11:00We are pretty good judges of character.
- 11:02We've had, I think to not work out in the last six years, which
- 11:07isn't bad. But we we're very selective of
- 11:11people. It's not just, you know, hey,
- 11:14let me hang out with you guys. That's yeah, cool.
- 11:16We can hang out and drink, but you're not going to come to the
- 11:20ritual because and I get a lot of that personally because in
- 11:24conversation, I make Mead. And when people learn that I
- 11:29make Mead, they want to hang out because I'm, you know, I'm a
- 11:31provider of awesome drink and. Right.
- 11:35It's a lot of attention and a lot of a lot of people are like,
- 11:38oh, that's cool. I'm like, you know, I'll give
- 11:39you some Mead, but that doesn't mean you're you're one of us.
- 11:42It it's, you know, it is what it is.
- 11:46Yeah, so it sounds like, and, you know, for maybe folks
- 11:49listening or you're even watching, I think people that
- 11:51watch this obviously know what we're talking about.
- 11:53But like when David's talking about, you know, doing it like
- 11:54a, a, a motorcycle club or a biker club or whatever in the
- 11:58prospect mentality that that echoes, you know, to worth, to
- 12:04to, to, to be of worth, right to, to worth somebody and right,
- 12:07show us your worth and then let let us show you ours, right.
- 12:10So there's this reciprocity. It's an exchange where you're
- 12:14not just like you're, you know, we have to make sure that you're
- 12:17cool enough to be one of us. It's not like that.
- 12:19It's, it's what are you bringing to the table?
- 12:21Are you serious? Are you genuine?
- 12:23What are you willing to do? How are we willing to
- 12:25reciprocate? And 'cause that's a shared tying
- 12:29of weird, you know, the, the, the, the, the shared exchange of
- 12:34all that. So that's what we're talking
- 12:36about when we when we say, you know, or when David says like
- 12:39having a prospect, you got to make sure that they're, you
- 12:43know, that that y'all will, will, will work together.
- 12:45Well, you know, and that because not everybody does and that's
- 12:48OK, but to make, you know, to make that group strong, you
- 12:52know, you got to know that you, you, you have the right people
- 12:55involved. So I like that approach to
- 12:57things. And also you mentioned we before
- 13:02we started recording here today, you you mentioned that because
- 13:07Asgard Brewing Company has left the area, y'all didn't really
- 13:12have like a, a hub anymore, right?
- 13:15You may have hang hang out. We have a couple of places we
- 13:19hang when we drink out it. It hasn't been like most of the
- 13:23time when we group now it's at someone's house.
- 13:28So that's been a little to me. It sucks because we used to see
- 13:31each other almost every Friday and now that doesn't happen.
- 13:35But there the the building that was once Asgard is being a new
- 13:40brewery is moving in and they're having a second location.
- 13:45Their original location is Mount Pleasant and it's Copper,
- 13:48Twisted Copper Brewing. And so we're looking forward to
- 13:52having a place to hang out again.
- 13:55Yeah, man. And who knows right what more
- 13:58that could do for your kindred, right.
- 14:00There might, there might be others in the area that are
- 14:03like, oh, this, you know, because that's where y'all
- 14:05originally met was that Asgard Brewer Company.
- 14:08And maybe, maybe you'll get to the next stage of things over
- 14:13here at the Twisted Copper Brewing Company.
- 14:15And you know, I got to, I got to make a trip down 'cause you're
- 14:17not that far from where I am. You know, Columbia's like an an
- 14:20hour away from me and I wished I'd had made it down there when
- 14:24it was Asgard Brewing Company and I never did.
- 14:28So keep in touch with me if you don't mind, just let me know
- 14:30like when when the brewery is is open and for.
- 14:34Business. 'Cause I'd like to make it, I'd
- 14:36like to make a, a trip down there on a weekend or something,
- 14:39you know, maybe one Saturday or or whatever and see what it's
- 14:42all about. Meet some of you guys if that's
- 14:46OK. Yeah, that, that sounds great.
- 14:48You know, we, we, we've had, you know, I don't know, it's just
- 14:56been different. It is, you know, this year's
- 14:58been it's been a crazy year personally.
- 15:01And and then the kindred growing and and one of our members
- 15:06moving to North Carolina. It's just been a lot.
- 15:11You know, I lost, I got in shape this year.
- 15:13I I swore I every year I don't do I don't do New Year's
- 15:18resolutions. I haven't done New Year's
- 15:20resolutions in a decade. My New Year's resolution every
- 15:23year, quote UN quote, is I want to be a better person.
- 15:26That's my goal is to be a better person than the year before
- 15:30growth one way or another. This year I made, I made a plan.
- 15:34I'm going to do something really make myself better.
- 15:37So I dropped 38 lbs, seven, 7 inches off my waist and I
- 15:44launched my business, which is what we're here to talk about.
- 15:47I launched my business this year, which was another thing I
- 15:49I wanted to do as a positive for myself.
- 15:53Hell yeah, dude. That's what I mean.
- 15:55That's a that's an accomplishment.
- 15:57I know what it's like to to carry around extra weight,
- 15:59right? Extra baggage, anything literal
- 16:02weight, it's hard. You know, you like, you got to
- 16:04really be dedicated and, and and put the work in to to make it
- 16:07happen. So congratulations on that, by
- 16:10the way. But yeah, so your business that
- 16:13you launched this year is deals with crafting leather and
- 16:18chainmail. So it's it's DK.
- 16:21Well, actually, you go ahead and you.
- 16:23DK custom leather and chain. I also do Viking Shields, which
- 16:30I'll show here in a minute. The round, the classic round
- 16:34shield I looked up historically. The Shields range from 32 inches
- 16:39across to 42 inches across. Most people don't want to carry
- 16:43a 42 inch shield, so I run in 30 twos.
- 16:46That's all I've made so far is 32, which is pretty good.
- 16:49Size covers me and I'm 61. It covers me from shoulder to
- 16:54past my hip, so that's that's a good shield.
- 16:58I use plank wood and I use linen.
- 17:05I glue linen onto the surfaces just like they did.
- 17:09I use leather wrap around the edges, square nails on the
- 17:12leather wrap. I try to do everything close to
- 17:16what they did. Of course, I use some modern
- 17:18conveniences because they're there and why not?
- 17:22But, but yeah, I, I, I try to make them sturdy.
- 17:27I've had mine for four years now and it's been beat on and banged
- 17:31on by axes, hammers, knives, Spears, and it's still together.
- 17:37So. Awesome.
- 17:40We're going to be excited to see it at some point during the show
- 17:43when you when you bring it on and and show everybody.
- 17:46So, yeah. So custom leather and chain.
- 17:49So that sounds like to me and for the listeners, right, that
- 17:52sounds like it's armor and of leather and chainmail, because
- 17:57we're not talking like chain link fences and leather, you
- 18:00know, shoes or anything like that.
- 18:03When you say chainmail you you. Most people think of chainmail
- 18:07armor, which I have made in the past, but it's prohibitively
- 18:13expensive and time consuming. I have a full time job and most
- 18:18week, about half of the year or more, I work over 50 hours a
- 18:22week plus a 2 hour drive an hour each way.
- 18:26So I don't have a lot of time for that kind of consumption of
- 18:30time. So I did the next best thing.
- 18:34I make chainmail jewelry. So I have a little display.
- 18:37It's got 1 hole in it because I actually sold a piece out of it,
- 18:40but it just shows different weaves.
- 18:45These are different weaves. I've learned that the these are
- 18:48earrings here are all sterling silver, stuff like that.
- 18:51So I can make these in any length.
- 18:53It could be a wallet chain, a necklace, bracelet and clit,
- 18:56whatever you, you know, anybody cares for.
- 18:59And there's pictures of this on my Instagram as well that might
- 19:02be a little better. The glare is pretty bad, but you
- 19:06know, I just, I literally and people think I buy it in bulk on
- 19:12a on a spool like a lot of people do.
- 19:15So I don't know if I can do this without spilling, but there's
- 19:20rings. Oh wow.
- 19:22Rings, that's what I put together.
- 19:25And so it's bags and bags of rings, 200 rings in a bag.
- 19:32And I've got sterling silver, stainless steel and black glass,
- 19:36titanium. So wow, that's, that's an
- 19:40investment that I made because I, it's great, you know, and my
- 19:45cell point, any male heathens out there like you and me?
- 19:49I don't know about you, but I'm not particularly careful with my
- 19:52jewelry. I, I so many things growing up
- 19:56and including watches, which I no longer wear because I've
- 19:59broken every watch I've ever owned.
- 20:01So I decided when I was going to make this stuff, the stainless
- 20:06steel and the titanium pretty much are unbreakable.
- 20:09They're they can break, but you have to really work at it.
- 20:13Yeah, you got to put some work in to make it happen, Yeah.
- 20:15The tear weight on an average stainless steel ring that I use
- 20:20is I think they said 20 something pounds and then the
- 20:28titanium is around 30 lbs. So in order to deteriorate to
- 20:32open it, so I have to use pliers to put it together.
- 20:36And I use toothless pliers so I don't leave marks.
- 20:39But when I weave, I'm weaving 3 or 4 rings together in in at a
- 20:45time to make the link. So it's actually triple what
- 20:49that original tear weight is for you to pull that apart.
- 20:53The weakest links are the, the, the clasp and the the ring that
- 21:00you clasp it to the single ring. That's where it's going to pull
- 21:03apart, if anywhere. So I usually guarantee my, my
- 21:08chainmail, like if you break it, I want to know how because damn,
- 21:12that's tough and I'll fix it. I you know because I I want to
- 21:16know how and I want to fix it and try and figure out how to
- 21:19prevent that. Yeah.
- 21:21So. Wow, now I'm curious, you know,
- 21:26you've been, you know, you got into Heathenry, you know, about
- 21:296:00 or so years ago, you say, and you've been knowing, you
- 21:34know, learning what that's like from just the social aspect,
- 21:37right? Learning about the culture and,
- 21:38and what it is to, to, to share space with people and have this
- 21:42really like familial bond with others.
- 21:46What was the like, what was the impetus behind going into
- 21:49leather work and chain metal work?
- 21:52Like why go in that direction versus anything else?
- 21:55Like what was where is that? Is that a passion of yours?
- 21:58Like did somebody suggest it? You know, could you give us like
- 22:00a a background of what pointed you in that direction?
- 22:05As for the leather, my older sister, who I'm still close to,
- 22:08one of my older sisters, she did leather work when I was young
- 22:13and I'd remembered that. And then I see a lot of leather.
- 22:16I go to Renaissance festivals like some of us do.
- 22:19And I saw a lot of leather work there.
- 22:21And I thought, well, I can do that and I can make that.
- 22:24And, and over time I started trying and did little bits and
- 22:28pieces. And as I realized, you know, I
- 22:30really can do this. And then I signed up for an
- 22:33online college course, how to make fitting things out of
- 22:39leather and bought patterns like the leather you see behind me,
- 22:43the armor that I made. And I just decided that it was a
- 22:48way to go to, to enjoy a hobby. I love working with my hands.
- 22:52I've always worked with my hands.
- 22:54I was raised on a farm. I did construction for 10 years.
- 22:57I did the military. I've been a hand.
- 22:59I've worked. Now I work at Nissan and, and,
- 23:02and it's all hands work. And I, I just enjoy working with
- 23:05my hands. It's creating something from
- 23:07nothing. And part of the reason I love
- 23:10working with leather and chainmail is 'cause you can
- 23:13start seeing progress quickly. You can really see it quick,
- 23:18like, OK, I'm making progress. And then when you're done, got
- 23:21something that looks like that. And it's like, wow, I, you know,
- 23:25I that from a hunk of leather, a chunk of cow, you know?
- 23:30Right, right, right, right, right.
- 23:33So when did you start working in leather?
- 23:36Was it, you know, right as you got into the business?
- 23:39Or did you happen to be in earnest in the last year and a
- 23:43half? But I dabbled for about 3 years
- 23:46now, just doing little pouches for my nephew or making a
- 23:52Renaissance pouch for myself, repairing stuff.
- 23:56And then, you know, it was, it was a dive in really for me.
- 24:01It was a big dive in 23 no 24 excuse me in in 24 my now ex
- 24:17fiance was diagnosed with cancer and I was determined to support
- 24:24her as best as I could. So I took a month off of work
- 24:27with pay without pay, got got some money together and I went
- 24:32up there for a month. Well, she works from home.
- 24:35I had nothing to do, so I jumped right into the breaking leather
- 24:40and started doing this leather stuff.
- 24:41And I dove in hard that first month and I got hooked.
- 24:44You know, like it's an addiction almost.
- 24:47I love working with it. So I love the smell of leather.
- 24:51If I walk into a saddle store, I'm in there just to smell the
- 24:55leather. Right.
- 24:56Yeah, what's up with this dude just sniffing seats, you know,
- 24:59Like what? You know, it's not weird, I
- 25:01promise. I just like the leather smell.
- 25:03Freaking amazing. I love the smell of leather.
- 25:05It's like walking to me. It's like walking in a Weld
- 25:07shop, walking in a mechanic shop, walking.
- 25:10I've been around forges. I love, I've done forging once.
- 25:14I'd love to be able to do it again.
- 25:16Those that I don't know what it is, that creation, you can
- 25:19almost smell it if it, if that makes sense.
- 25:21You could just really, it's something special about it and I
- 25:24enjoy doing it and seeing my stuff now, even though I'm the
- 25:29one that usually wears it right now because I'm just starting
- 25:32out. I do like wearing it out and
- 25:34getting compliments. Like where'd you buy that?
- 25:36I didn't. I made it and that that's a
- 25:39great feeling to me. So when anybody does that.
- 25:43Dude, that's so cool. So yeah, for the folks that are
- 25:45listening to this again, head on over to Patreon if you want to
- 25:48see anything that we're talking about today, because David's got
- 25:52some of his work in the background.
- 25:55He's got 2 upper body suits of armor.
- 26:00I guess you know the the pauldron they call.
- 26:03What do you call them? The?
- 26:04Pauldrons or all these are curiouses.
- 26:07And then I have bracers and on the blue armor I have
- 26:13articulating shoulder pauldrons that I made, which was the first
- 26:16articulating anything I ever made.
- 26:19And that's something that would be like a premium bonus that
- 26:24somebody would want to buy because it doesn't usually come
- 26:27with the armor. Those, especially the way they
- 26:30were designed, the pieces took 200 rivets for each shoulder.
- 26:37And then there's over 200 rivets in that suit of armor.
- 26:41So I, I put every rivet in and hammer every rivet in, you know,
- 26:45so it's, it's a process. Yeah.
- 26:49And I would. I was hoping maybe you could
- 26:51maybe talk us through the process.
- 26:53OK, so you've got, let's say I wanted to, let's say I wanted to
- 27:00order that suit of armor, right? Or make it, make it obviously
- 27:03something that I wanted, but you're going to make it at at,
- 27:05at that design. What's the process like for you
- 27:08from start to finish? Well, first of all, if it's,
- 27:13let's say you picked the the blue style.
- 27:15So overall style is the name of it.
- 27:18I bought, like I said, I bought patterns.
- 27:21So that pattern is called Bjorn and it has a lot of, like I
- 27:27said, ornamental stuff. And so I would find out how big
- 27:32you are, like what's your size? How tall are you?
- 27:34So I know because the armor it it, it has adjustment.
- 27:38So I don't have to make it specific to your size because it
- 27:40will adjust out and adjust in. But there is a set that's for
- 27:45regular sized people that will fit you and me.
- 27:49And then there's the up size for the big dudes that I that would
- 27:53have to be charged more because you have to put in more leather
- 27:56and, and more stuff to make it fit.
- 27:59So that's the first thing. And then the color people are
- 28:04used to brown leather and black and, and I have examples of
- 28:10some, some samples that I was just messing with.
- 28:15So that's normally what you see with designs is you see black or
- 28:21you see brown. And I, I did when I made that
- 28:25blue and black and gold suit that I wanted to be
- 28:29personalized. That's a me thing.
- 28:31That's I love this color. I love this color combination.
- 28:34It's the color of the kindred of Asgard's color.
- 28:37And I wanted to bring that out and that's why I put the gold
- 28:41Ravens and the gold feathers on there and I went out with it,
- 28:44you know, like it went. And so I have the ability,
- 28:48sorry, I put my color color palette to do all these colors.
- 28:54I have all the. Oh I love those Green Man,
- 28:57that's awesome. Yeah, so they got like, I can do
- 29:00green this. I got black, red.
- 29:04Yeah, Natural. This is light brown, right?
- 29:09And I'll see which one is this? That's turquoise, oxblood,
- 29:15purple, brown, green, orange and blue.
- 29:21So like, this is my, This is why I say custom, because if you buy
- 29:25it from a store, they're going to be brown or black.
- 29:29Yep. I can whatever color combination
- 29:30you want. If you want your outfit to look
- 29:32like something the Joker were and you want it purple and
- 29:35green, I can do that. That's the point is to be able
- 29:39to give people choices, more choices than what you just see
- 29:43on a website. Oh, this is what's for sale and
- 29:46this, this is the art that we are giving you.
- 29:50This is it. This is your art.
- 29:52I will if you want bear claws instead of Ravens, I'll get on
- 29:59the get and take bear. You know, drawings of bear
- 30:02claws, and I can put that on there.
- 30:05Whatever you need, whatever you want.
- 30:06I can pretty much figure it out. And we come to an agreement.
- 30:10I show you, hey, this is what I've got.
- 30:11This is cool. Yeah.
- 30:12OK, great. So this is the placements I walk
- 30:15through with you every step to make sure this is what you want.
- 30:19That's the customization part that most people don't do.
- 30:22That I really want to do. Because if you buy a suit of
- 30:26armor like the blue one online, they're going to sell it in
- 30:29brown. And it's going to have one kind
- 30:32of art and it's going to be $100 plus shipping.
- 30:35I make it for you. It's going to be a little bit
- 30:37less. And it's personalized.
- 30:39It's exactly what you want in the color, in the art,
- 30:43everything. So when you wear it, it's you.
- 30:45It's your personal like no one has that because it's your
- 30:49personal taste that that's what I'm trying to get across on
- 30:53that. That's crazy man.
- 30:57That I love. The, the, the customization, the
- 30:59various colors and, and like, yeah, 'cause you know what
- 31:03we're, we were talking about this before we started recording
- 31:05too, is that these are not just ornamental costume pieces.
- 31:13You're not, you're not making things that just look amazing.
- 31:17They are functional or could be functional, right?
- 31:22So and and and. Most I hope I'm hoping most
- 31:24people know that a kidney belt now this is a kidney belt I made
- 31:30from a pad. I actually bought a cheap one
- 31:32from Teemu and I copied it but in the design but I used.
- 31:39Very heavyweight leather. That's thick.
- 31:42And then? The.
- 31:44Belt. Weight is going to be thinner.
- 31:46And I stamped nine of these Celtic circles and then I take a
- 31:53space and I do nine more all the way across.
- 31:56Those are hand riveted with copper rivets, Cappenburg
- 32:01rivets, and I buy the belt, the buckles.
- 32:06So now you got this customized belt.
- 32:12That is, you can't find. Anywhere because and again, I
- 32:16don't have to make it in black. I did because it worked for what
- 32:19I need it for. So, you know, it's that kind of
- 32:23thing where you do that. I'm going to pull these off
- 32:28here. So this is something I've been
- 32:36messing with the feather. Here you can't.
- 32:41Really. See it?
- 32:41Well, that's actually gilded gold now.
- 32:49This is an. Option, obviously, because it's
- 32:53not cheap, but it's something that's cool that you can't
- 32:56always get. And then like the rivets and the
- 33:00people think this is one of the greatest compliments I've ever
- 33:02had. It's my soul lines when I do the
- 33:06saddle stitching. People think I've done that with
- 33:09a machine and I don't, I don't have that's hand stitched.
- 33:14No way. So like.
- 33:16So this is a very like when you say working with your hands,
- 33:19you're you're, you're it's primitive in a way like a
- 33:21primitive style of, of crafting, right?
- 33:25It's all hand stitched. These these little accents on
- 33:32this articulating shoulder Poland.
- 33:34Sorry, use camera. Each one has cut outs.
- 33:40Each cut out is riveted to the piece.
- 33:45Those were all cut out. Trimmed, dyed by hand, the
- 33:50inside where it attaches to the armor so.
- 33:55You know each one of these. Pollens, like I said has almost
- 33:57200 rivets in it. So when you when you do
- 34:00customization, some of it is going to be more just that's
- 34:05just what it is. But I also was like, I was told
- 34:08you before, like straps. Most people when they buy
- 34:12leather, they don't know what's used to make the actual piece.
- 34:18And straps are thin. And a lot of thin leather comes
- 34:22from the belly of a cow. Well, belly leather, even when
- 34:26it's like done, when it's ready to be used, will still stretch.
- 34:33After you've dyed it and put it together.
- 34:35So you get the stretching effect, and that's not good.
- 34:38So you have to use thin shoulder leather from the shoulders of
- 34:43the cow. And that's something I learned
- 34:45the hard way, like most people do.
- 34:47A lot of the leather I work with, well, a buddy of mine did
- 34:52SCA leather. That's SCA leather, very, very
- 34:56thick. That's kind of standard.
- 34:58So you can see there's a difference and the SCA.
- 35:03Leather is going to be. More because it's more for the
- 35:05leather. Just, you know, it's simple.
- 35:09Well, yeah, 'cause they're actually.
- 35:10Taking a beating, yeah. I mean, they they, they're out
- 35:13there to, you know, re enact and and, you know.
- 35:18Have it serve its purpose. Like what?
- 35:20It's intended for, correct? And you've.
- 35:23You've worn your own. Work I'm sure, right?
- 35:26You've gone to like the Ren Fest and and whatever and you've worn
- 35:30your your own set of armor. What what would you say again,
- 35:34being objective, not being, you know, biased because you made it
- 35:38on a scale of like 1 to 10 comfortability, how would you
- 35:41rate your your armor as comfortable?
- 35:44Yes. Oh, that's tough.
- 35:49Cause I've never worn any other armor than what I've made
- 35:52myself. So.
- 35:54Well, yeah, what I mean is like how?
- 35:55Would you rate your armor like, you know, a it's it's you get
- 35:58used to it after some time or? Yeah.
- 36:02Case in point, the red armor, and I wore that over a long
- 36:07tunic and that was it. And it, it's fine.
- 36:12It, it, it, you're going to sweat wherever the leather
- 36:16blocks your skin because that's normal.
- 36:20And, and I, you know, I got complements with the red leather
- 36:23because no one ever seen a completely red leather set
- 36:25before. So that was cool.
- 36:29The blue set is actually designed to wear a chainmail
- 36:32shirt underneath it. That's the original.
- 36:35On the original picture on the website I got it from, they
- 36:38showed a chainmail shirt. So that's a 15 LB chainmail
- 36:41shirt minimum. So that's, that gets to be where
- 36:45things change. But you don't have to wear a
- 36:48chainmail shirt. So.
- 36:49Yeah. Weight wise.
- 36:54Would we know if you're if? You're just wearing, you know,
- 36:58the the I forget not Curry Curry.
- 37:01What's the what is the, the body part cursor Curious.
- 37:05Yeah. So All in all, like total
- 37:07weight, the leather it it, it can't be that much the leather
- 37:11weight. I would say is, I don't know,
- 37:14maybe 10 lbs. Yeah, I, I was.
- 37:17Distributed. Over.
- 37:19So you don't really feel it too much.
- 37:22One of the other have you? Sorry, I had.
- 37:26To get something else, it's leather work, but it's custom.
- 37:32I made that grip for my Dane Warhammer and so wrapped that
- 37:40really good. So, you know, I can do.
- 37:44There's lots of applications that people sometimes don't
- 37:48think about, you know? Yeah, yeah.
- 37:52That's very unique, what has been.
- 37:54I know you just kind of, you know, you've been doing, you
- 37:56know, the, the work, the leather work for a few years I guess
- 38:01now, but or last couple years, what has been the most
- 38:05challenging part of learning this, this, this craft for you?
- 38:14Noise because when I worked on it in the basement of my ex
- 38:19fiance's house, I had to go to the basement because I didn't
- 38:22want to hit, you know, pounding on the rivets and the smell of
- 38:28the dye or or whatever. I mean, it's, it's, it can get,
- 38:32you know, so you need a space that you can do this in.
- 38:37I live in an apartment right now and I, you know, so I have to be
- 38:41careful when I do my work. But that's been the biggest
- 38:44challenge to me is, is that, and people really understanding the
- 38:50amount of work, like I don't have any finished coasters
- 38:55because I, I was making coaster sets as promotional giveaways.
- 39:00But like just the square coaster I have, you know, you wet it and
- 39:05you put the design on it, then a carve on the design to make it
- 39:08imprinted. Then I take a a hammer and a
- 39:12tool and tool it so that it it makes it better and you know, so
- 39:19that's how come you get this is. Because I did all that.
- 39:24And then diet and you know, so and then I got a waterproof from
- 39:28the the coasters are quadruple waterproofed so that they don't
- 39:33go bad. Yeah, I don't know if this.
- 39:36Is leather I mean, it feels like leather, but I'm not, you know,
- 39:40I'm not a an expert. Smells, smells kind of like
- 39:42that, but it's this is a leather coaster too, you know?
- 39:44Yeah, yeah, that looks like it came in a.
- 39:47It came in a. Set, it has different designs on
- 39:49it. I've got one with like a
- 39:50millionaire. I think 1's got maybe some
- 39:53Ravens on it, but it came like a set of four.
- 39:54It was a gift, I think my wife years ago one year.
- 39:58But I love leather coasters because yeah, that's just and I,
- 40:02I try to be. Fair.
- 40:04I, I, I think I'm fair with the set of four coasters for about
- 40:0920 bucks. Oh yeah.
- 40:12Dude, you know, yeah, that's. I always try to be fair with.
- 40:14People, I'm not here to RIP anybody off.
- 40:18That's another big thing is I wanted to point out with the
- 40:22costs. So an average bracelet for a guy
- 40:28like me who has an 8 and 1/4 inch wrist which is a little
- 40:33bigger than normal, takes about 110 of these rings here to make
- 40:42a bracelet in this style. And so that's 20.
- 40:48Dollars worth of rings. So I charge you that $20 plus I
- 40:54charge you my time, which is about 5 to 6 hours.
- 40:58And the clasp is included in the whole price and it's about 130
- 41:03bucks for the whole piece. So, you know, I, I, I'm not
- 41:07trying to RIP anybody up. I'm just trying to get paid and
- 41:10pay for my material. That's really all I do.
- 41:12And I know a lot, a lot of business people that I've
- 41:16followed and looked at in chainmail groups, which believe
- 41:19it or not, there are say, oh, we take our, our, our material and
- 41:25charge 2 1/2 times. And then you got to charge this
- 41:28much for labor and then you got to do that.
- 41:30Like, dude, I'm not doing, I'm not here to kill people.
- 41:33I'm not. I I enjoy what I do.
- 41:36I want you to afford it and enjoy it as much as I can.
- 41:40I can't give it away, but you know, yeah.
- 41:45No, for sure, you know, 'cause I mean, listen, I know I'm, I'm
- 41:47very good friends with artisans and craftspeople who their
- 41:51livelihood, right? How they feed their families,
- 41:54how they keep their lights on, how they warm and cool their
- 41:58homes in the seasons is dependent upon the cell.
- 42:02You know, the, the, the sales of their crafts we saw at the
- 42:06beginning every episode, right? Fialvatier workshop.
- 42:08They are Appalachian, an Appalachian family.
- 42:12They're, they're kin to me. You know what I mean?
- 42:14Like I could, I could literally pull up to their door at any
- 42:16time and them to me and they would have shelter.
- 42:19I would have shelter there. You know, we've we've shared in
- 42:21meals, ceremonies, rituals, very meaningful, you know, dark
- 42:27moments in our lives, happy moments, like they're they're
- 42:29family to me. But again, like that is their
- 42:32livelihood are the sale of their crafts, you know, drums and and
- 42:36ritual attire, ritual, sorry, ritual items, you know, rattles,
- 42:39drums, jewelry, things like stuff like that.
- 42:43So I appreciate what you're saying when it comes to, you
- 42:46know, being fair with your prices, but also not under
- 42:51bidding yourself and underselling yourself.
- 42:54You know what I mean? You gotta, if, if you're
- 42:57approaching this as a business and you're, and you're taking,
- 43:00you know, wanting to take this to the next level, you know,
- 43:03know your worth. And, and that's a hard thing
- 43:05because I've done, you know, I've, I, I do this stuff, right?
- 43:08I do this podcast and I've got, you know, I tell people, if you
- 43:11want to watch it, you got to, you know, pledge the dollar.
- 43:14And I think some people in the past would be, would be like
- 43:18fine with that. But then I know other people
- 43:20have been like, what are you doing?
- 43:20You know, charging people for this?
- 43:22I'm like, I it's their of their own volition.
- 43:24They, if they want to pledge that dollar, if they want to be
- 43:28a part of this, that's on them. I'm not making anybody do
- 43:31anything, you know, and so honestly.
- 43:35I'm just going to be honest with you.
- 43:36I something, I don't know if it's a quirk in me.
- 43:40I have a very difficult time listening to podcasts.
- 43:44I don't know why I can't ever seem to make it through a whole
- 43:47podcast on anybody's podcast except for yours.
- 43:50Yours has been The only exception and it's one of the
- 43:53reasons I originally hit you up to come on the first time
- 43:56because it's like you have, I guess it's the, the subject
- 44:01matter and the way you present things.
- 44:04And it just seems it seemed attractive to me and you were I,
- 44:08I pledge to Patreon before you. You cut off the other ones
- 44:11because I think you deserve it. I think you do a great job and,
- 44:15and it keeps me informed and interested and I point as many
- 44:20people as I can in the heathen community.
- 44:22Hey, check this guy out because I I think you do a good job.
- 44:27I appreciate that man. Thank you.
- 44:29I'm glad to hear that. And, you know, kind of like what
- 44:33you're saying before, you know, like with your work, you know,
- 44:35you, you love what you're doing. You know, it's a passion.
- 44:38You don't you're not trying to kill people out here like you,
- 44:40like you said. And similarly, even though the
- 44:43craft is different, this is still artistic representation.
- 44:47I mean, this is a form of art, you know, podcasting and, and
- 44:50talking to people and, and for people or, or sharing things.
- 44:54It's, it is, it is an artistic expression.
- 44:56And I'm, I love this. And I was getting to a point
- 45:00where I was not loving doing it anymore 'cause I was like, I've
- 45:03got all this noise, you know, these algorithms and this
- 45:06nonsense that's distracting me from being able to pour myself
- 45:11into this work and then be genuine about it and enjoy it.
- 45:14Because if I'm not enjoying it anymore and if it's more of a
- 45:17chore and I and I and I feel like it's taking more out of me
- 45:20than what I'm able to give, I'm, I'm, I'm not going to.
- 45:23Deliver a good. Product, you know what I mean?
- 45:27So shifting in that way and, and, you know, finding where my
- 45:31place is and then how to, how to present it was as much a focused
- 45:37effort or attention on my own self-care and my own well-being.
- 45:43And knowing that what I'm worth and, and not being, you know,
- 45:49pride is, is a weird thing to say or, but to be proud of what
- 45:52I am and to know my worth, you know what I mean?
- 45:54I know what I'm worth and I'm not going to sell myself short
- 45:57of these things. And then, and it's been
- 46:00beneficial because my mental health is better.
- 46:03My physical health is, is, is improved as a result.
- 46:05I'm not, you know, stressing out so much about algorithms and
- 46:10whatever. So I guess my whole point of
- 46:11bringing that part up is, you know, I understand.
- 46:14I can relate with you on the whole, like pricing yourself or
- 46:20you know, like I'm not doing that.
- 46:21I'm not doing what you all are doing because that's not me.
- 46:25You know, I'm not a content. I'm not a heathen content
- 46:28creator anymore. I'm a heathen who just so
- 46:29happens to have content that he creates and shares.
- 46:33But I'm not, I would not call myself the content creator
- 46:35anymore because I, you know, that's, that's a whole niche,
- 46:38that's a whole group that, of people that do things and I'm
- 46:41like, they suffer as a result of it.
- 46:43And I'm like, you started doing this.
- 46:46You started putting yourself out here on a platform to share
- 46:50your. Passion.
- 46:51And now look at it. Now you're miserable because of.
- 46:55Of again of all this. Nonsense.
- 46:56That's out here that becomes a part the rules.
- 47:00You know, they are what they are and, and sometimes, whoops,
- 47:03excuse me, sometimes they do they do they get in the way and
- 47:09put this back up. Yeah.
- 47:14Yeah, it's a it's. A touchy thing, you know, I
- 47:16mean. I I give people props that that
- 47:19can still be, you know, passionate and enjoy what
- 47:23they're doing while still maintaining the space of social
- 47:27media nonsense. I get the way it is and and how
- 47:30it is but yeah, I was. Getting to a point where I just.
- 47:34Like I, I, I'm going to sacrifice quality if I, if I
- 47:38keep on this path. So so now I'm going to show you
- 47:42the. The battle hardened shield.
- 47:45I got to move my seat. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 47:48Nice dude so. Like I said, there's two layers
- 47:54of cloth glued onto the front before I paint it.
- 47:59Steel sealed boss. The Asgard symbol modified for
- 48:03the Kindred of Asgard. This is a find room.
- 48:07Buddy of ours came up for us. Kinder K was Opala and Angus and
- 48:17then on the back. Steel bar.
- 48:22Plates, the handle and the shoulder strap.
- 48:26So even at 25 plus pounds, I was.
- 48:31About to ask how much weighs. I can walk around fair.
- 48:35Get something to drink and eat and to have it shouldered and
- 48:39then when I want to pose, which I get a lot of pictures, I can
- 48:43just bring it right back off. And that's the 32 inch one,
- 48:48right? Yeah.
- 48:50Yeah, I mean, it looks that. I, I can't imagine my, I mean
- 48:53unless you're, you know, 600 lbs and like 8 feet tall.
- 48:56Like why would you need a 42 inch?
- 48:59So what they found? So I just I I looked at that
- 49:02before I made them and I said 42 a good void.
- 49:07No, can you? I mean if if a 30. 2 is, you say
- 49:10about 25 lbs, but it's twentyish.
- 49:13It's around. £20 because of the steel yeah yeah, yeah, yeah so
- 49:16then I'm. Thinking, you know, then I'm
- 49:17thinking, you know, add another almost foot in diameter to that.
- 49:21How much more weight do you think that that would add?
- 49:23You're probably looking at close to 30 lbs.
- 49:25Oh yeah, 25 S, 30 lbs. And then, you know, thinking
- 49:29about what a shield was used for.
- 49:32I mean, it's it, it defense, but you can like the the the the
- 49:37boss on the front there use it the offensively as much
- 49:43defensively, using it as a as a battering tool and and needing
- 49:48to have that flexibility and that mobility to to carry it, to
- 49:53wield it. Man.
- 49:58That's impressive, dude. And what is so You said you you
- 50:00meant you made you make those out of plank wood.
- 50:03Yes, What I do is I. Get pressure teeted pickets like
- 50:07fence pickets and I get and I stack them edge to edge for the
- 50:1232 inches and I usually get the four foot because it's less
- 50:17waste. And so I edge glue all those
- 50:20together, press them together until it's dry and make my
- 50:25circles, cut the circles out, glue the material on until it,
- 50:30you know, it once said it one thing at a time.
- 50:32The most, the most the the I don't charge for the drying
- 50:37time. Otherwise they'd be ridiculously
- 50:41expensive. But you know, that's the biggest
- 50:43thing with those is the drying time for the glue and the paint
- 50:47and you know all that, that takes more time than actually
- 50:50putting the shield together so well you mentioned.
- 50:55Sorry, you mentioned that the the covering over the wood is
- 50:59linen. Yeah, so they used.
- 51:01Cloth. They would glue it with pine
- 51:03glue and pine tar glue, and they would put it on a flat surface
- 51:08of Flat Rock and they would stack rocks on top of it to put
- 51:12the pressure on it until it dried.
- 51:15And then they would take it apart.
- 51:16And they would use dye from plants or whatever to dye their
- 51:21colors onto that. And whatever designs they they
- 51:25made, you know, obviously they didn't have paint.
- 51:27So, you know, that's what they used.
- 51:31And that's why a lot of Shields, you'll see Reds and Blues,
- 51:34because those were widely available colors that they could
- 51:37get from plants or or whatever, Aries and stuff like that.
- 51:42Yeah, Aries plants. And in in I don't know if they
- 51:46used Lapis Lazul like the English did for for painting or
- 51:53marking things in bibles like the the English did.
- 51:57I don't know if the Norse used it or where it had that
- 52:00technology at the time, but. Now have you ever you?
- 52:06Know, since you're working in both leather and chain work,
- 52:10have have you ever explored the idea of?
- 52:16Having a shield, a leather. Wrap shield or or or putting the
- 52:19leather skin like animal skin. So what?
- 52:22That's that's. Called a torg and or a targ
- 52:26however you want to say it and I haven't done that yet.
- 52:29I probably could but again cost. Now for myself I have a shield
- 52:36and I made seven of those from me and my brothers.
- 52:39The Brotherhood, they everybody gets one if they want one, and
- 52:42the original 6 got one for free. Everybody else has to kind of at
- 52:47least pay for the parts and I do the labor for free.
- 52:50But in the group. That's cool though, yeah.
- 52:55A blank shield with. Just the cloth, the leather wrap
- 53:00would be about 300 bucks and that's what I try to get.
- 53:08With the paint and everything. Is $300.
- 53:10I try to get at that price with everything.
- 53:13Sometimes it's a little more depending on what they want.
- 53:15And I get the the graphics done at a local graphics place and he
- 53:22he adheres those graphics on for me.
- 53:25So I I can't hand paint that good.
- 53:28I'm not that. I'm not that good.
- 53:30Oh yeah, yeah, that's cool. That you're supporting local
- 53:33businesses too though, and, and, and collaborating in that way,
- 53:37right? Hell yeah, dude, I.
- 53:40Was gonna ask, you know, when we're talking about these types
- 53:44of crafts we're talking about I'm, I'm, I'm leaning more
- 53:47towards the leather work specifically because I have you
- 53:51know, as you can see in the background, there's, there's
- 53:54animal remains, you know, skins on the drum and feathers and you
- 54:02know this and that and for me. As a heathen.
- 54:06You know, you're heathen, I'm heathen.
- 54:07So we can, we can kind of relate on this.
- 54:09You know, for me as a heathen, working with these pieces that
- 54:14have these animal skins on them, there's a relationship that I,
- 54:19that I, that I, that I feel comes with working with the
- 54:23spirit of the animal, right? So for instance, my, my drum is
- 54:27bison. You know, when I have a rattle
- 54:29that's bare skin wrapped or, you know, has a bare skin holding
- 54:32everything together and you know, all these things.
- 54:35So I was gonna ask, you know, like does.
- 54:38Working. With leather, the, the, the hide
- 54:41of cattle, does it, does it resonate with you in, in any
- 54:47sort of animistic way when you're working with the leather
- 54:50to create armor and in the spirit of the bovine or the
- 54:53spirit of the cattle or the, you know this or that?
- 54:55Is there anything that that goes through your mind or in your
- 54:57heart working with these materials like that?
- 55:05With some. Of it to a.
- 55:06Point, I was raised on a dairy farm, so cows provided milk and
- 55:11meat. So there wasn't that
- 55:14relationship which you're talking about.
- 55:17I didn't. I don't have that connection
- 55:19with that. However, with the Shields, the
- 55:22outer leather is bison and that has special because bison what
- 55:28they were and what they represent.
- 55:30I did feel that's why I ordered bison leather for that wrap
- 55:34because it was something special.
- 55:37The black and white hood you see behind me, that's actually 4
- 55:41rabbit furs I sewed together and made a hood out of.
- 55:46And you know, rabbit was something that they would hunt
- 55:49in lean times and so yeah, that had a little bit of meaning to
- 55:53it as well. I have a white tailed ear
- 55:56shoulder cover hide that I wear when I go out.
- 56:00Like we did our Christmas parade.
- 56:03We were in a in a Viking ship float with Christmas lights.
- 56:06Yeah, that was us and I last time you were here.
- 56:10I'm glad to hear you guys. Are still doing that Uh huh
- 56:13yeah, we definitely we. Didn't do Mule Day this year.
- 56:15We did Christmas parade. But we're going to, we have a
- 56:18big plan. So I'm going to let just people
- 56:20here in on the secret. We're tearing down the Viking
- 56:25ship float to getting. We're moving the ship off.
- 56:28We're going to keep it for future and we are going to make
- 56:31a mobile Mead hall with a throne chair or some sort of chair,
- 56:38throne chair. That's going to be that's going
- 56:41to be our float for Mule Day. See that?
- 56:44Plan right now. So see.
- 56:47Hell yeah, it'll be pretty awesome.
- 56:49That's going to be like when is. When is that?
- 56:50When does that usually have? Is it the first?
- 56:53Saturday in April, OK. OK, cool.
- 56:58Down in Columbia, yeah, Yeah. The only thing we have to
- 57:00figure. Out is how to pour liquid while
- 57:05we're moving and we kind of have stuff that's not alcoholic in
- 57:10vision, but I don't know how that's going to work, but we'll
- 57:13figure it out. Hell yeah dude.
- 57:17Very cool. So how do people get a like, you
- 57:21know, they want to get some armor made you I think we talked
- 57:25earlier you you said you have a website, but you can't order
- 57:28anything from it. What's the best way?
- 57:31Because I want people to see what they.
- 57:32Do and there's a number of there's it's DK custom leather
- 57:37and chain on Instagram. I have my phone number on there
- 57:40as well. You can message me either way
- 57:43and just say, hey, I'm interested in your armor and
- 57:45we'll go from there. My my biggest thing is that
- 57:48personal connection. The reason I don't have
- 57:51pre-order armor or pre-order jewelry, even though the
- 57:55earrings wouldn't matter in in the customization part because
- 57:59earrings are earrings. But I'll give you an example.
- 58:02I, I don't know how tall are you?
- 58:04I I've never asked. How tall are you, Jesse?
- 58:115758 something like. That and how much do you weigh?
- 58:15Too much. Like I'm like 19190 say 190 as
- 58:20an. Example.
- 58:23I made this for me. It's not going to fit you.
- 58:26I have wrist is I have very large bones.
- 58:29It's a very large wrist and it's not going to fit a normal person
- 58:32another man and you're you're a grown ass man.
- 58:35It's not going to fit you. So that's where getting in
- 58:39content where if you bought this on a website, it's going to be 1
- 58:42length. Regardless of how big your wrist
- 58:44is, regardless of how big your bones are, it's one length.
- 58:47You get a hold of me and I say, hey, if you don't have a way to
- 58:50measure, you don't have a measuring tape, a soft tape to
- 58:52measure your wrist. I'm going to teach you how to
- 58:53measure your wrist with a string, whatever it takes to get
- 58:56that measurement, and then I make it for you.
- 58:58It's going to fit just like this does where it doesn't roll too
- 59:02far and that's that's why I don't have pre-order stuff and
- 59:07the same with leather because if I put the leather already made,
- 59:09what's custom? You know, that's my point is.
- 59:13Being custom, that's why there's no pre-order stuff.
- 59:16And then people are like, well it'd be so much easier if I
- 59:18could just order. Well, I don't.
- 59:20That's not the point of this. It's not the point.
- 59:23Yeah, anybody can do that, right?
- 59:26Yeah, you can. You can.
- 59:27Go and like you can follow you on Instagram or they can go to
- 59:30your website, which by the way, when you're listening to this
- 59:33show or watching this, the links for all of that will be
- 59:36annotated somewhere. So for the listeners, go to the
- 59:38show notes for you folks watching on Patreon, go to the
- 59:40description box of the video and the links for David's Instagram
- 59:44and his website will be there. But it's more of a point of
- 59:47reference, right? This is the kind of thing I do
- 59:50now. Let me work with you to create
- 59:52something unique and custom that's for you or for red,
- 59:56whatever, right? Because a buddy of mine.
- 59:59Has red and black armor and he, I made that for him and he
- 1:00:03wanted a matching renaissance bag, so I made a red and a
- 1:00:07matching red and black renaissance bag for him.
- 1:00:10And, and that's the kind of thing I'm talking about is you
- 1:00:13just don't see this stuff. You go to most websites, it's
- 1:00:16not there and you know, I I just think it that.
- 1:00:21People would appreciate. That that are willing to to do
- 1:00:26the things like if you're going to Renaissance Festival, yeah,
- 1:00:29you can buy AT shirt, a shirt or whatever.
- 1:00:32That stuff's not so customizable as the outer, the covering, the
- 1:00:38armor or whatever you haven't done.
- 1:00:42Yeah. Now we've talked already.
- 1:00:45About you making the armor, the you know, the, the upper body
- 1:00:48armor, right shoulders, chest, body belt, bracers and things.
- 1:00:53Have you, have you done any work or, or do you do or will you do
- 1:00:56anything for the lower body like the, the, the, the leg pieces?
- 1:01:01So I've not been asked. To do so sometimes on a like the
- 1:01:05red armor had an option for what that's called TACITS, and it
- 1:01:10looks kind of like a bit of a skirt that hangs down off of it,
- 1:01:14but Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And it has.
- 1:01:16Designs on. It I didn't do those because I
- 1:01:19didn't want to deal with them personally while I was on rent
- 1:01:23at Renfair. But yeah, I can make those.
- 1:01:27I haven't. And and the full arm piece is
- 1:01:31called a VAM brace. I haven't made those because
- 1:01:35nobody's asked for them, but I'm sure I could.
- 1:01:37I can get patterns for that as well, and the leg coverings as
- 1:01:41well. I can do that, you know, but
- 1:01:45like I explained and I showed you the kosher, I'm going to get
- 1:01:49behind me real quick. This is.
- 1:01:55Part of that double shoulder that I made the straps out of.
- 1:01:59This is just a piece, yeah. Now and people are like.
- 1:02:03You know, it's it's good leather.
- 1:02:06Now most people are going to go and say leather's leather, but I
- 1:02:12promise you it's not. This is the premium leather and
- 1:02:14when you get non premium leather, you get marks on it
- 1:02:17from barbed wire or holes from who knows what.
- 1:02:22And that makes it harder to work with.
- 1:02:25It's a lower quality and I don't I don't want that.
- 1:02:29So I always go and get the high quality leather in person from
- 1:02:33Tandy Leather for I'm going to throw their name out there
- 1:02:35because that's who I work with. So what are they called?
- 1:02:38Who are they? Tandy Leather.
- 1:02:40And Nash, OK. If you could make sure I get
- 1:02:47that link or something so I can include that with because I'm
- 1:02:51sure they do work and, and businesses, you know, beyond
- 1:02:54just what you do. I would like to make sure that
- 1:02:56that they are represented in the show notes and stuff too.
- 1:03:00So Tandy leather, I'll, I'll include them as well.
- 1:03:03You never know who might hear this or watch this right there.
- 1:03:06There might be other folks in the area, I probably have.
- 1:03:10Given them upwards of two grand in the last three years.
- 1:03:14So they like you. They're.
- 1:03:17Like David, welcome back. Yeah.
- 1:03:20Where can we get you? Yeah, hello.
- 1:03:24I go in there. I.
- 1:03:26I When I go in there, I honestly bring a lot of cash 'cause I
- 1:03:29know I'm spending money. I love it.
- 1:03:32Again, it's that leather shop. It's, that's everything just
- 1:03:35gets to you. And you're like, oh, I like this
- 1:03:37and I like that and I like that. And then you're like, Oh my God.
- 1:03:40You know, you just for those who are, who are gun collectors,
- 1:03:44it's like running into a gun show.
- 1:03:46You know, you just walk into a gun show, you know you're going
- 1:03:48to spend money. You just, it is what it is.
- 1:03:50So yeah, just you already, just you go.
- 1:03:52In there and prepare for that. Well, one of the things I was
- 1:03:56thinking as. You're talking about, you know,
- 1:03:58customizations, commissions. You know what I mean?
- 1:04:01People wanting to get something unique.
- 1:04:05Have you ever reached the point where you thought like the you?
- 1:04:12Know like let's say somebody comes in and they.
- 1:04:13Want you to make something custom for them, but they come
- 1:04:17to you with a design from. Somebody or something else maybe
- 1:04:22a movie or they saw something on a website or they saw something
- 1:04:27from another creator, right and they're like I want this made by
- 1:04:31you Do you think that there's like a.
- 1:04:34Moral conflict or does that any? Does that sit with you in any
- 1:04:36sort of way to like copy another design?
- 1:04:41So I'll give a for. Instance it hasn't happened, but
- 1:04:44if somebody came up to me and said I want a copy of Thor's
- 1:04:49armor from MCU from whatever whichever movie he he did in
- 1:04:54that particular outfit, I can't it it's licensed.
- 1:05:00I, I don't have a license to produce a copy of that.
- 1:05:05It's infringement and I could be sued.
- 1:05:08So I'm not going to take that chance.
- 1:05:11I can make you something similar.
- 1:05:14I can make you the basic style, but the exact duplicate is not
- 1:05:19going to happen. It's just not I I can't infringe
- 1:05:22on somebody else's work. It's a it's a moral code, A and
- 1:05:25it's against the law. So it's legal.
- 1:05:27Yeah, yeah, Yeah, exactly. Yeah, and I wanted to approach
- 1:05:31that because I figured I, I already had like, I think I know
- 1:05:34just from talking with you, like I know what he's going to say,
- 1:05:36you know, you know, you're not in this for the for the money,
- 1:05:38You're not in this to just make a buck and and clearly you want
- 1:05:41to preserve your reputation. So yeah, I just wanted to throw
- 1:05:46that out there in case people are wondering, like, well, I
- 1:05:49want to support him, but I got this really cool thing that I
- 1:05:51saw from this movie or whatever. And yeah, so for people that are
- 1:05:54thinking about it, you know, be bear in mind there are, you
- 1:05:58know, copyrights for a. Reason.
- 1:06:01And, and all of that exists to protect the, you know, the, the
- 1:06:05artists or the creators of the original pieces.
- 1:06:08So I bought. I bought.
- 1:06:09The patterns which gives me the the company I bought the
- 1:06:13patterns from and I have 40 plus patterns of of letter armor I
- 1:06:17can make. I paid money for that which I
- 1:06:20paid for the licensing to make it.
- 1:06:24So I'm licensed to. Make that pattern.
- 1:06:27These these are both I, you know, I literally own the
- 1:06:31license to make these and sell them if I want to so and if I
- 1:06:39make they have a rule. It's weird to me.
- 1:06:42But if you sell 10 copies, if I sold 10 copies of that blue
- 1:06:48armor, I have to pay extra money to get another license to extend
- 1:06:52more sales that every 10 pieces of whatever.
- 1:06:56I have to go in and say, hey, I need to sell more and he'll sell
- 1:07:01me the rights or let me buy the rights to sell more copies of or
- 1:07:05whatever I'm making. That's just, it's just business.
- 1:07:09He's out of the United Kingdom, so it is what it is.
- 1:07:14Yeah, I think. I mean, I paid.
- 1:07:18For this college schooling and the patterns, I've probably put
- 1:07:254 to $500 easy into just that part, yeah.
- 1:07:32Yeah. And then and then people like,
- 1:07:34well. You're not making, you know,
- 1:07:36you're new and why would you do that to start a business?
- 1:07:38This is This is why, because I have this vision that this is
- 1:07:42going to be awesome and and people are going to buy in like
- 1:07:45really want to do stuff like this.
- 1:07:46You know, I have one more set of armor that I want to make
- 1:07:50myself. It is the name of this armor is
- 1:07:55tear and it's a full suit shoulder to ankle.
- 1:08:00It's got articulating knees, articulating elbows, shoulders,
- 1:08:05everything. And it's a big project.
- 1:08:07If when I decide to jump into that one, but I'm, I'm, I'm
- 1:08:11really want to do that one because it's, it's a challenge
- 1:08:15and it's named after my, the deity that that I claim is as my
- 1:08:19first and my my foremost, which, you know, so I it it, it's gonna
- 1:08:24be pretty cool, I think, once I get there, Yeah.
- 1:08:27Dude, that's gonna be epic. I'm I'm anxious to I'm excited
- 1:08:30to to see the the outcome of it all and just for the clarity of
- 1:08:34it. When you when you say
- 1:08:36articulating pieces, we're talking about their like being
- 1:08:41able to so. Right.
- 1:08:44Yeah, that. Shoulder pauldron that I showed
- 1:08:46earlier it it cut it so a knee piece when you see people
- 1:08:52wearing plate mail armor and they have that full leg piece
- 1:08:57and it bends, that's an articulating yeah, no it.
- 1:09:02Moves with the bodies move the metal gauntlets that.
- 1:09:05Have all the little pieces that move that's an articulating.
- 1:09:09That's that's why you're articulating comes from is that
- 1:09:12it's movable but and it's still on you that it goes with the
- 1:09:16motion of your body. Yeah.
- 1:09:20What would you what? Would you say would be like the
- 1:09:26most for right for you? Right.
- 1:09:29Now, right, the pinnacle project for you, you got commissioned to
- 1:09:33do something for someone, whether it's armor, jewelry,
- 1:09:37whatever, like a shield, anything.
- 1:09:40What would you say would be like the pinnacle?
- 1:09:43Of. Your work right?
- 1:09:45Now in the. Stage of things to be given the
- 1:09:47chance to do. That's a good question.
- 1:09:53I would really like to do a piece of of even Tain mail for
- 1:10:01anybody famous. That would be cool.
- 1:10:04But like an armored piece for somebody that was like maybe
- 1:10:08want it going to be in a movie and they wanted it, they
- 1:10:11commissioned it themselves instead of having the studio.
- 1:10:13Something like that would be really awesome.
- 1:10:18One of my. Favorite stars?
- 1:10:19And, and it's corny as you want to call it.
- 1:10:21I would love to do a piece for Jason Momoa.
- 1:10:24That would be freaking great. He's a huge dude.
- 1:10:26It would be a massive challenge, but I think it would be awesome
- 1:10:30or anybody like that of that caliber to to wear something
- 1:10:34that I made, you know, and, and be like, holy crap, he's got
- 1:10:38like on screen, you know, yeah, that would be cool.
- 1:10:41That would be awesome. But other than that, I, I it's
- 1:10:44hard to say. My favorite, unfortunately, it's
- 1:10:50also the most expensive. But my favorite stuff to work
- 1:10:52with because it's so damn pretty is stainless steel or sterling
- 1:10:57silver. Excuse me.
- 1:10:58The Sterling is just gorgeous. I love the way it looks when
- 1:11:01it's done. It's so shiny and pretty, but
- 1:11:04it's very expensive and I love working with Sterling.
- 1:11:10I have to ask, are you a? Lord of the Rings fan.
- 1:11:13Yeah, OK. So.
- 1:11:16Side note on that, before I get into my question or my comment,
- 1:11:20side note on that the 25th year anniversary of Peter Jackson's
- 1:11:25Lord of the Rings films is here and theaters across.
- 1:11:32The Nation. Are re releasing all three?
- 1:11:36So the Fellowship, 2 towers, Return of the King in theaters,
- 1:11:40the extended editions, No, no less.
- 1:11:42Yeah, for two weekends. Next month in.
- 1:11:44January 1 of 1 of the local theaters here in Murfreesboro,
- 1:11:48TN. I'm like I'm buying tickets and
- 1:11:51going every day that weekend to watch this because I saw
- 1:11:55Fellowship when it came out in theaters 25 years ago.
- 1:11:58Me too. What I mean?
- 1:11:59And. So anyway, so since you're since
- 1:12:03you appreciate that, you know, and since you appreciate Peter
- 1:12:06Jackson's production in, in, in. Direction.
- 1:12:09And everything that happened. What is your favorite?
- 1:12:16Armor. Designed from the Lord of the
- 1:12:18Rings series. Are you a Gondorian armor kind
- 1:12:23of guy? Are you more Rohan the Elvin?
- 1:12:27Like what's What's your favorite armor?
- 1:12:31From. Those from those series, well,
- 1:12:34it's it's. My.
- 1:12:35OK, so yeah, I'll go 2 parts on this because something that I
- 1:12:41could make out of leather I'm, I would definitely go with Gondor
- 1:12:48and the tree because it's close to the tree of life and I like
- 1:12:53that design. But something that I wish I
- 1:12:56could make and would be extraordinarily killer to make
- 1:13:00is Sauron. His armor.
- 1:13:03Oh, that is insane. The gold scroll work and the,
- 1:13:09it's just, if you really look at it and you take away that it was
- 1:13:13worn by an evil person and you look at the artwork and that the
- 1:13:17artistry that was used to make all that work, it's, it's just
- 1:13:21nuts. It's so out there.
- 1:13:24It's so amazing. I would love to be able to do
- 1:13:27that, you know? And that's what's really
- 1:13:31impressive about just thinking about like the Lord of the Rings
- 1:13:33specifically, is that, you know, when these movies came out, you
- 1:13:36know, 25 years ago there, there, you know, there wasn't the
- 1:13:39advancement of CGI and all this shit that that's getting used in
- 1:13:43movies nowadays. You know, so like the the the
- 1:13:46people that. Designed the costumes and.
- 1:13:48Designed everything like it was so good.
- 1:13:51Like it wasn't cheap. They what?
- 1:13:52They didn't cut corners. They, they, they, they made good
- 1:13:55things and that was somebody crafted that.
- 1:13:58Somebody came up with that and made it a reality.
- 1:14:03You know from the drawing. Board to the.
- 1:14:06To the, to the, to the stage. I guess if you want to call it
- 1:14:08that, like that was somebody's idea and I'm.
- 1:14:14Going. To ask before I tell you,
- 1:14:16because you may. You probably already know,
- 1:14:17because if you're into the Lord of the Rings, you do know how
- 1:14:20they made their chainmail. Dude, I just saw a.
- 1:14:24Video about this the other day and it reminded me of it.
- 1:14:27Yeah, I mean, it was, it was just plastic.
- 1:14:31Yeah, a plastic extruder shot. Out plastic split rings and then
- 1:14:36they they weave them and glue individual rings together to
- 1:14:40make the chainmail. That's just insane.
- 1:14:44The intricacy, the time, just that, the patience of it all.
- 1:14:47And that was the other thing too, you know, 'cause you were,
- 1:14:49you were talking earlier to me about the, the results, right?
- 1:14:54When, when you're crafting a set of anything and then you see the
- 1:14:58results come in almost instantly, right?
- 1:15:01You, you, you, you start with this naked piece of leather or
- 1:15:05some pieces of metal. And then in a short period of
- 1:15:07time you see the results. I wanted to ask you right, the,
- 1:15:15the importance of patience and letting things take their
- 1:15:18course, right? Not like I have this vision.
- 1:15:20I want to see this thing happen and then how you kind of balance
- 1:15:24out the the vision and what could be while.
- 1:15:29Living in the. Present and in the.
- 1:15:30Crafting moment and appreciating the time it takes to do it well
- 1:15:36the first time. Not rushing through it just to
- 1:15:38get a result. Do you like?
- 1:15:41What's that experience like? For you when you're, when
- 1:15:42you're. Working on these pieces so I'll.
- 1:15:45Give. You a for instance, with the
- 1:15:47armor that I've made yeah, you, you they give you a picture of
- 1:15:51the finished product. That's the first thing you see.
- 1:15:54So you're like, cool, I want that.
- 1:15:56And then you get the breakdown and it's just insane.
- 1:16:00Well, to me, it's not insane anymore, but it shows you step
- 1:16:03by step how you get there. And so you, you, you, you you
- 1:16:07have to step back and be like, OK, I have to trace out the
- 1:16:11patterns. I have to cut out the patterns,
- 1:16:12I have to bevel the patterns I have to do all this stuff.
- 1:16:16So when you're doing the individual things, you could
- 1:16:18even and and it's it seems sound may sound weird, but you got the
- 1:16:24a full half a cow. Which is a. 6 foot long by 4 1/2
- 1:16:31foot wide chunk of leather that you bring home in a giant roll
- 1:16:37and you cut out all you if you put all your pattern on there
- 1:16:41and you cut all the pattern out, you've already get to see OK,
- 1:16:45this I'm making this is what I'm starting with, but I'm already
- 1:16:48seeing shape taking, if that makes sense.
- 1:16:51You know, you already Oh wow, that's now I understand this is
- 1:16:55how it goes together. And so you just do it step at a
- 1:16:58time. And with the blue and the black
- 1:17:01leather, I was the reason I did that, I enjoyed that one a lot
- 1:17:06is because I was able to do one color the black pieces and let
- 1:17:13them dry and then take the blue pieces and do them separately.
- 1:17:16So I'm progressing, not just sitting there letting something
- 1:17:19dry or something set. And I was able to do back and
- 1:17:22forth blue and then black and black and then blue and get that
- 1:17:26final look in a that's a 30 hours.
- 1:17:32It took me 30 hours to make that blue set.
- 1:17:35Wow. That's, I mean over a day, you
- 1:17:38know, just think about that. People like, think about what 30
- 1:17:42hours is. In your.
- 1:17:43Life what you're doing in a 30 hour window and this is not 30
- 1:17:48consecutive hours right David? No, no, we're just talking the.
- 1:17:52Combined. 30 hours over how long?
- 1:17:54Right? Week. 2 weeks?
- 1:17:55A month, right? Who knows?
- 1:17:57It was. Probably three.
- 1:18:00Well, that one was three to three and a little over three
- 1:18:02weeks, so almost a month. You know, like 30 hours spread
- 1:18:07over a month and you're having to like you, you have this
- 1:18:11again, you have this print or this, this template, this final
- 1:18:15thing like I want to see that and then you've got.
- 1:18:19Life you got your. Job you've got all these other
- 1:18:21obligations, things that are happening and then but in those
- 1:18:23moments of of presence where I'm like a new stage of existence
- 1:18:27has come forth in this thing, there's a new, there's a new
- 1:18:30pattern, there's a new portion of this.
- 1:18:32Thing that's come. Into reality.
- 1:18:34So like living with that in its progression, right?
- 1:18:37Like kind of growing. Up with it.
- 1:18:41And if if. You will.
- 1:18:42That's got to be special It it was and.
- 1:18:45Like the red one? Only took me a week.
- 1:18:50Because I was off of work and I sat there 8 hours a day.
- 1:18:55I literally got up at 7:00 or 6:00 or 7:00, ate breakfast,
- 1:19:00went down into the basement and start working on leather, set an
- 1:19:04alarm for lunch, come up and eat lunch with my girl, go back
- 1:19:07downstairs, work until dinner. And then if I had a small piece
- 1:19:12I could bring up, I would bring up and and dabble while we were
- 1:19:15sitting watching TV. That's for an entire week and
- 1:19:18that's how I got that one done that fast, but ate 6 to 8 hours
- 1:19:22a day working on it that and that's the only way you get it
- 1:19:26done quick. And you know with my job, like I
- 1:19:28said, I'm working 40 to 53 hours a week and some.
- 1:19:33And when I work 53 hours a week, that means I'm working six
- 1:19:36nights. So I have one night a week off
- 1:19:40to do laundry, to do grocery shopping and try and get some
- 1:19:44work done. Yeah.
- 1:19:47And then what? It's interesting though.
- 1:19:48That you had that time to while you were off.
- 1:19:52Work right you were. You gave that example of you.
- 1:19:55You treated it like it was your job, like you had alarms, you
- 1:19:59had a schedule. You you followed that structure
- 1:20:03to to. Do the thing it it it it.
- 1:20:07It didn't. Feel like a job to me because it
- 1:20:09was for me and I had a passion to try and do something.
- 1:20:11It didn't feel like work. I still love it.
- 1:20:13I still it's a hobby and I enjoy the heck out of it.
- 1:20:16But I did treat it like that because I wanted to see if I
- 1:20:22could do it in X amount of time, how much time would it take me
- 1:20:25if I really concentrate? Really just did it because
- 1:20:29that's the only way you really know what you're capable of.
- 1:20:32When somebody calls up and says, hey, I need this piece, but I
- 1:20:36only have this much time, can you do it?
- 1:20:38And you can say yes or no because you know what you can
- 1:20:41do? No, if somebody calls me up and
- 1:20:44a week before Renaissance Festival and says, hey, I want
- 1:20:47that blue set not happening, right?
- 1:20:50Yeah. Yeah, sorry bro.
- 1:20:53No. Yeah, it goes.
- 1:20:55It's also great that you had. That time to see like, 'cause
- 1:20:58you know, when 'cause I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm assuming and maybe I'm
- 1:21:02wrong, but like, you know, this is a, something you'd like to
- 1:21:07approach as a business, right? Go into business for yourself.
- 1:21:12And that takes discipline, that takes that.
- 1:21:14I'm getting up at a certain time, I'm working on this for a
- 1:21:16certain time. I'm, I'm having that right.
- 1:21:18You know, So yes, you, you can kind of make your own schedule.
- 1:21:23But in that also is, is, is a even stricter perhaps
- 1:21:30expectation to set, you know, I'm not reporting to somebody
- 1:21:33else who's setting my schedule. I'm reporting to me and I'm
- 1:21:36setting my schedule And you know, how am I going to hold
- 1:21:38myself accountable for this and all that sort of thing, But
- 1:21:43right, so. The, the, the red set, which
- 1:21:46again, it's kind of far back, you probably can't see it, but I
- 1:21:50know I'll get up and point it out that sewing this is all
- 1:21:57saddle stitch, which means you got to go in and out One
- 1:22:00Direction, then you go back in and out the other direction.
- 1:22:03And I did that all by hand on both sides.
- 1:22:07Give you an example. This one side took almost 25
- 1:22:12feet of of of sinew one side and I did it all with the needle and
- 1:22:21like this is another like that's all done by hand.
- 1:22:25It's just the and. That's what you're sewing with,
- 1:22:29is is. Leather and sinew.
- 1:22:31Yeah, it's a leather old. Leather needle.
- 1:22:34I punched the holes, and then I use either reel or imitation
- 1:22:39sinew that's tied to get close to the color.
- 1:22:43Yeah, it's stamped in. These are hand rivets.
- 1:22:46You can see that they're Cap Cappenburg rivets.
- 1:22:50Wow. I'm not.
- 1:22:51Trying to hide anything. There's nothing.
- 1:22:53Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So it takes.
- 1:22:57Time, but I enjoy it so that's what matters.
- 1:23:00Right. That's what matters is, is
- 1:23:03loving what you do and doing what you love.
- 1:23:05We're going to get close to wrapping things up here, David,
- 1:23:08because we we've touched on a lot of good things and I want to
- 1:23:12be respectful of time because you got.
- 1:23:15Such a busy. Life and I know your downtime is
- 1:23:18is valuable, but I did have a couple of last minute questions
- 1:23:22that kind of were just more or less fun.
- 1:23:25Maybe it's like sort of rapid, rapid fire, right.
- 1:23:28So I'm going to ask you something and you just, you
- 1:23:30know, whatever the first thing comes to your mind sort of
- 1:23:34thing. So first one being one of the
- 1:23:37Norse gods comes to you and says make me a set of armor.
- 1:23:42Who is it? That.
- 1:23:43You would love. To make a set of armor for.
- 1:23:45Amongst the Norse gods, yeah. I got to go with Tear man.
- 1:23:48I knew it. I knew it it.
- 1:23:50Was a day I was like, if he says anything else I'm going to ask
- 1:23:52why, but yeah, it. I I got it.
- 1:23:56I got it, got it. So that's my boy, yeah.
- 1:24:00Now the color what do you think tears armor would what would he
- 1:24:06go with color wise color so funny.
- 1:24:09Thing you should ask but when I was setting up my altar and and
- 1:24:12doing armor I was looking at articles and an article said
- 1:24:17that certain colors are associated with certain deities
- 1:24:23and I love red and I love black and those are tears colors by
- 1:24:29chance? So it would definitely be red
- 1:24:32and black. That would look badass.
- 1:24:38And being a war God, I mean. That's that, that, that that
- 1:24:40tracks, you know? Yeah.
- 1:24:42Well, you know the. The red hides the blood.
- 1:24:49I read something or I saw. Something.
- 1:24:50Somewhere, one time, like the way like.
- 1:24:53I think it had to do with Spartans.
- 1:24:56You know, and they they wore a lot of red and that's, I don't
- 1:24:59know if that was true or not, if it's historically accurate, but
- 1:25:01they were like, we wear the red so that it it, it hides the
- 1:25:04blood or, you know, disguises the blood.
- 1:25:10Are there any particular like do you, do you?
- 1:25:14Approach your. Your leather work like as a
- 1:25:16heathen, I'm going to just go down.
- 1:25:18I'm going to focus on this right with this question.
- 1:25:20Is there any specific? Prayer or ritual or ceremony?
- 1:25:26Or anything that that you bring into your work as a heathen.
- 1:25:31Yeah. So whenever I do.
- 1:25:32Chain nail work or whenever I work with the leather, usually I
- 1:25:37put my high lung or wardrooner radio on and listen to that.
- 1:25:47It helps me get in the groove and in the mood and in the
- 1:25:50spiritual sense of doing things. I I love listening to to that
- 1:25:56music. So it, it's something that I, I
- 1:26:01enjoy doing. Unfortunately have not been able
- 1:26:05to catch them in concert, but one of these days I want to.
- 1:26:13Yeah, dude, if I know. Hilong are on a kind of a like a
- 1:26:16hiatus, but some of their people, you know, some of their.
- 1:26:22Members. Are doing things independently
- 1:26:25if you ever get a chance to. Make an event or or.
- 1:26:30Head somewhere that one of their people, like I know Jacob does
- 1:26:35like drum workshops and things and he's done stuff down in
- 1:26:38Huntsville, AL, which isn't far from you or I.
- 1:26:41And but yeah, like if you ever get a chance to socialize.
- 1:26:47With with that. Camp it's it's it's worth it so.
- 1:26:52Last question. Again, rapid fire sort of thing,
- 1:26:55but in the lore and throughout some of the stories we, we, we
- 1:26:59hear about the weapons being imbued with certain properties.
- 1:27:07You know, Odin's spear never misses.
- 1:27:11You know, Thor's hammer always comes back to him when it's
- 1:27:13thrown. Various magical elements are
- 1:27:16imbued into the the gods instruments or tools throughout
- 1:27:22the lore and even in some of the sagas, you know, we we hear
- 1:27:25about swords and and certain things being magically
- 1:27:28influenced. What would be your magical
- 1:27:35environment or, you know, something that you can imbue
- 1:27:37magic into one of your sets of or suits of armor if you had the
- 1:27:42ability to. That's pretty simple.
- 1:27:44As easy as. Protection, the symbol for
- 1:27:47protection. You know, that that, that it's
- 1:27:49actually in my red suit, on my red suit is that symbol.
- 1:27:54So yeah, it's a symbol for protection or, or the protect,
- 1:27:58because that's what it's doing. That's his job is to protect
- 1:28:00you. So if I had the the actual like
- 1:28:05God abilities, I would make it indestructible.
- 1:28:07But that's that's, you know, a different thing.
- 1:28:09But that's what I would love. That would be awesome.
- 1:28:11But yeah, I would Protection. Yeah.
- 1:28:16Yeah, I know. Like if I think of like, you
- 1:28:17know, from like a like AD and D or a video game sort of aspect,
- 1:28:20like if I had like a suit of armor, like what I want my suit
- 1:28:23of armor to be magically imbued with.
- 1:28:30Obviously like the armor's protection.
- 1:28:32Obviously like that that that's kind of like low hanging fruit,
- 1:28:34like OK, it it's meant to protect you.
- 1:28:36So yes, protection, but like man, if I could like if anything
- 1:28:40that my armor wore like if I if I wore.
- 1:28:43A set of armor and it and it made me do.
- 1:28:45Anything magical or or like crazy.
- 1:28:49You know, something beyond. Just the protection, like what
- 1:28:51would it be like if you ever thought of that?
- 1:28:55Like beyond the protection thing, like could, could, if
- 1:28:57you're a suit of armor, could like, I don't know, like I'd say
- 1:28:59like make you fly or like pick up heavy things or, you know,
- 1:29:02deflect, you know, other. Attacks like beyond physical.
- 1:29:08Attacks like maybe like the the. Belt that Thor's wear gives some
- 1:29:12extra strength. Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:14That's. What I'm saying like like my
- 1:29:15VAM? Braces could make like all of my
- 1:29:17hits be like 10 times worse or, you know, absolute critical hits
- 1:29:21when, when I swing, you know, or, or whatever that sort of
- 1:29:24thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:25That would be. Definitely, you know, and real
- 1:29:28quick before just got back a little quick on the the red
- 1:29:33armor a little bit of a joke I heard that I thought it's kind
- 1:29:38of funny. A a pirate captain is talking to
- 1:29:41his first mate and his first mate asks him why he always asks
- 1:29:46for red breeches when they go to battle.
- 1:29:49And he said, because if I bleed, my men don't see me bleed and
- 1:29:54they don't worry about me and we fight.
- 1:29:56And then you hear a guy yell from the crow's nest captain,
- 1:30:00though, like, Spanish Armada's coming.
- 1:30:02He goes quick, get my brown pants.
- 1:30:11Thought that was good. Yeah.
- 1:30:16Yeah, I get it. I get it.
- 1:30:18OK, All right, I. Hear you?
- 1:30:20Yeah, it's a dad joke. But it's funny.
- 1:30:22Yeah, it is. But.
- 1:30:23I'm a sucker for. Those dude, I'm I'm, you know, I
- 1:30:27get it. The brown pants, yes.
- 1:30:30David, it's been really good catching up with you and hearing
- 1:30:33where you're at with these things.
- 1:30:34And I appreciate your time covering your, your vision and,
- 1:30:39and where you're going with, with your craft.
- 1:30:42And I do wish you all the luck that you deserve in it becoming
- 1:30:45something successful and that you can bring your vision and
- 1:30:48other people's vision to life with, with this armor and, and
- 1:30:53jewelry and, and the Shields and just everything that you're
- 1:30:56doing. Man, it's it's really cool that
- 1:30:58we got a chance to to talk. About this and and share.
- 1:31:01It with the world. So thank you for coming back on
- 1:31:03the show. I appreciate the opportunity.
- 1:31:05And, and I'm hoping that, you know, obviously to get a little
- 1:31:11headed on this with this, but my main thing is also just to put
- 1:31:15it out there that hey, I'm here. You don't have to be a heathen.
- 1:31:19And I'm assuming that's mostly what listens and and watches
- 1:31:22you. But somebody may have a special
- 1:31:24somebody that's in the background that doesn't believe.
- 1:31:27And I don't have a problem with making, you know, stuff for
- 1:31:30anybody. I don't care what religion you
- 1:31:32are, what you follow necessarily.
- 1:31:36I, I, I'm not that. I'm not that kind of person.
- 1:31:38But, you know, it's really good to have the opportunity to do
- 1:31:41this. I really appreciate you doing
- 1:31:43this for me. Yeah, man, absolutely.
- 1:31:45Because I mean, listen, like you, you talked about going to
- 1:31:47the Ren fairs and and stuff. And that is a, that is a melting
- 1:31:50pot of all types of people. You know, it's, it's
- 1:31:53entertainment, it's fun, it's good family fun, you know what I
- 1:31:57mean? And a lot of times people just
- 1:31:58want to be able to go there and separate themselves from the
- 1:32:01normal mundane nonsense that they have to deal with.
- 1:32:04They want to put on this, this, this, you know, this, this
- 1:32:09guard, this, this suit of armor, right?
- 1:32:11And maybe in that moment, they're, they're connecting to
- 1:32:14something that is deep within them all along, you know,
- 1:32:19they're not trying to escape, they're just trying to
- 1:32:20reconnect. And I and they get to go to
- 1:32:22these events and they get to go somewhere and dress in a certain
- 1:32:25way and not be looked at as though they're weirdos or that
- 1:32:28they're, you know, it's silly or why you dressing up, You know,
- 1:32:31you're 47 years old, Why are you doing it right?
- 1:32:33It no, this is a safe space. It's, it's and it's, you know,
- 1:32:39an opportunity to, to just play and, and, and have a good time.
- 1:32:45You know, we, we forget about that aspect of, of our existence
- 1:32:48as human beings, the older we get, you know, we forget how to
- 1:32:52play. We forget how to just have a
- 1:32:54good time for the sake of having a good time.
- 1:32:57You know what I mean? We forget how to.
- 1:33:00Not take ourselves too seriously, that's, you know,
- 1:33:03we're getting out. But an example of what you're
- 1:33:05saying is a meta guy six years, seven years ago now at the
- 1:33:10Tennessee Renaissance Festival in a full set of plate armor,
- 1:33:15his occupation is brain surgeon, which is like, OK, you're a
- 1:33:21brain surgeon walking around in 110 lbs of steel in Tennessee
- 1:33:26heat. You're crazy, but you're
- 1:33:29awesome, you know? Yeah, Yeah, that's cool.
- 1:33:32Yeah. Good for.
- 1:33:32Them, man. Dude, I you know, more props to
- 1:33:36him because you know shit, I you know, because of this Tennessee
- 1:33:38heat, like I'm I'm I'm hard pressed to go out in anything
- 1:33:41more than shorts and AT shirt in September, you know, or whenever
- 1:33:46the Ren fair around here usually comes around.
- 1:33:48I think it's it's usually it's like the hot time of year.
- 1:33:50May, may right? Yeah, it's in the it's.
- 1:33:55In the early part of. The I know other other Ren fairs
- 1:33:57in other parts of the country have them in the the end of the
- 1:33:59summer, but Even so, like yeah. May in.
- 1:34:03Tennessee you you know it's hot. I got 1 words for you.
- 1:34:10Since there's renfairs everywhere, Nevada has theirs in
- 1:34:14June. Oh fuck.
- 1:34:16That, yeah. Have you been to Nevada in June?
- 1:34:20I lived in Nevada for. 10 years, there was no way in heck I was.
- 1:34:23No. Yeah.
- 1:34:25No, dude, you know, I've, I've, I've worked on the road and then
- 1:34:29I've been. All over the country and I've
- 1:34:30been in Arizona, Nevada, even parts.
- 1:34:34Of. Utah, you know, and in that time
- 1:34:36of year like in the southern parts of those states, but Nah,
- 1:34:40Hell no, dude. 120° air temperature, forget about.
- 1:34:46It you know. Arizona got smart.
- 1:34:50There's in February. That's OK, now that makes
- 1:34:53better. Sense.
- 1:34:53Yeah, good for Arizona. All right, David, is there
- 1:34:56anything else that you'd like to share or or parting words before
- 1:35:02we wrap this up? I think I'm good, you know,
- 1:35:04again, appreciate anybody that wants to give me a shout.
- 1:35:07I'll work with you and thank you, Jesse.
- 1:35:09And you know, we got to hang out sometime.
- 1:35:13Definitely, man. You know, we're, we're, we're so
- 1:35:15close. The fact that we haven't met up
- 1:35:17yet at this point is kind of bizarre.
- 1:35:19Like we're we're within an hour from each other.
- 1:35:22I've gone farther for less. So I work in Smyrna so.
- 1:35:27Well, you're, yeah, you're just right down.
