- 0:00Hi guys, get ready for a powerful intellectual debate
- 0:03between two iconic figures, doctor Richard Dawkins and ayaan
- 0:06hirsi Ali watches ayaan, a former atheist, passionately
- 0:10defends the love of God against Dawkins arguments this is a
- 0:14discussion that challenges both faith and reason let's watch
- 0:18the. Video To call herself a
- 0:24Christian is a bit different. I mean, a Christian has to
- 0:29believe in something, and I mean any, well, you go to church now
- 0:39and you listen to the vicar and do you kind of notice what a lot
- 0:45of nonsense he talks? I mean, do do you really take it
- 0:50seriously that Jesus is the son of God?
- 0:53Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus was born of a virgin, and
- 0:57that's part of Christianity. So I think because you and I
- 1:03know you very well, we've been friends for a long time.
- 1:06And in fact, in some ways I think of you as a mentor.
- 1:11I would say you're coming at this from a place of there is
- 1:18nothing. And what has happened to me is I
- 1:22think I have accepted there is something.
- 1:25And when you accept that there is something and there is a
- 1:28powerful entity for me, the the God that that turned me around,
- 1:39I think what the vicar is saying no longer sounds nonsensical.
- 1:44It makes a great deal of sense. And not only does it make a
- 1:47great deal of sense, it's also LED with the wisdom of
- 1:51millennia. And so like you, I did mock
- 1:58faith in general and probably Christianity in particular.
- 2:01But I don't do that anymore. And, and again, that is where
- 2:04the humility comes into it is it doesn't seem in 2024 after I
- 2:11went through that experience, it doesn't seem nonsensical to me.
- 2:17And it doesn't, I don't mock it. I think I've been, I've come
- 2:21down to my knees to say perhaps those people who've always had
- 2:25faith have something that we who lost faith don't have.
- 2:33And, and, and people who have faith also like the woman who
- 2:36told me, well, you, you've reached you, you've tried
- 2:40everything and you've lost hope. You've lost faith.
- 2:45Try it. Pray.
- 2:48I think just in, in that one word, there is so much wisdom
- 2:55and, and that it's I, I am suffering and I'm staggering to
- 3:03say. I'm just trying to say, no, it's
- 3:05not stupid. It's in fact, it's clever and
- 3:07it's wise. So you believe in some kind of
- 3:10higher power, which is comforting you, and you react.
- 3:19You're obviously you're reacting from an Islamic past and, and I
- 3:24know that from what you've written, that part of what you
- 3:27feel is Christianity is a bulwark against Islam, which is
- 3:32a quite separate thing from what you've been now saying.
- 3:35But but you, you stand by that. I mean, you, you, that's part of
- 3:38what, what you're saying. And I accept that and I, I
- 3:42support that, that that's why I've called you a political
- 3:46Christian. But from what you've just said,
- 3:49it sounds that you're more than just a political Christian.
- 3:51I mean, it sounds that you actually believe it so.
- 3:55So what is your response to those specific questions of
- 3:58Richard when the vicar is saying that Jesus is the Son of God?
- 4:03Literally, not figuratively, Yeah.
- 4:06How do you square that with your highly trained rational mind?
- 4:10Well, it is again different planes of perception.
- 4:14So I I choose to accept Jesus Christ, the teachings of Jesus
- 4:20Christ, the story of Jesus Christ, I choose to accept that.
- 4:24So on the personal level, the rewards I get very subjective
- 4:29again, but mine and through choice which is separate from
- 4:33where? I think that aside from my
- 4:37personal experience, the history of Western civilization is
- 4:43mainly Christian and that the external forces, for instance,
- 4:50the spread of Islam non violently or violently and the
- 4:56challenge of Islam and the message of Islam to Western
- 4:59civilization can be counted and should be counted with the
- 5:05message of Western civilization, which is essentially Christian.
- 5:09And in that sense, I think there are more people who agree with
- 5:12me. But that is on the societal
- 5:13level and then on the civilizational level.
- 5:17I think that every moral you've used yourself, Richard, the
- 5:24phrase lately that there is moral Christianity and there is
- 5:27cultural Christianity. And when moral and cultural
- 5:31Christianity collides with moral and cultural Islam, or moral and
- 5:36cultural Confucianism or cultural authoritarianism, I
- 5:41think then perhaps we're on the same page about that might be a
- 5:45way of countering it. But on the personal level, yes,
- 5:49I choose to believe in God. And I think there we might say,
- 5:54let's agree to disagree. I I didn't hear that.
- 6:01She's saying, let's agree to disagree on the on the details,
- 6:05I mean. If if it's more than just
- 6:07details. I mean, OK, I wanted to say 2
- 6:15two different things. Let's take the moral thing
- 6:19first. Islam is a nasty religion.
- 6:23I think we agree about about that, but Christianity is not
- 6:27all that nice either. And when you think about
- 6:30Christianity, Christianity is obsessed with sin.
- 6:34Saint Augustine said that we are all, we all inherit the sin of
- 6:40Adam. Well, of course he didn't exist,
- 6:42but so we inherit original sin. Original sin came down in the
- 6:49seaman. Jesus was not conceived with
- 6:53seaman. That's why he's clear of sin.
- 6:58His mother Mary had to be clear of sin as well, so she had to
- 7:01have an Immaculate Conception. This is all obvious nonsense.
- 7:06This is all theological bullshit and the idea that humanity is
- 7:21born in sin and has to be cured of sin by Jesus being crucified,
- 7:27Jesus being punished for all our sins.
- 7:30That is a morally very unpleasant idea.
- 7:32I'm sure you must agree about that.
- 7:35I find that Christianity is actually obsessed with love and
- 7:40that the figure, the teachings of the teaching of Christ as I
- 7:50see it. And again, I'm a brand new
- 7:53Christian. But what I'm finding out, which
- 7:56is the opposite of growing up as a Muslim, the message of Islam,
- 8:00but the message of Christianity I get is that it's a message of
- 8:07love. It's a message of redemption,
- 8:11and it's a story of renewal and rebirth.
- 8:14And so Jesus dying and rising again for me symbolizes that
- 8:20story. And in a small way, I felt like
- 8:23I had died and I was reborn. And that story of redemption and
- 8:30rebirth, I think makes Christianity actually a very,
- 8:34very powerful story for the human condition and human
- 8:37existence and the pain of suffering, but also our internal
- 8:43the recognition of what you call sin.
- 8:47But perhaps the character defects that both good and evil
- 8:51are there, but that both good and evil are in US.
- 8:54I think those teachings in Christianity are far more
- 8:58powerful and have led to, I think, the flourishing of
- 9:03Western civilization. Compared to say, growing up as a
- 9:07Muslim when I was taught that really the only way for you to
- 9:10be faithful is to fear naked fear and to have these sets of
- 9:17obligations which you basically obey.
- 9:21And that was very much about power about it was centered
- 9:26around Hellfire and, and all of these other things.
- 9:31And so Christianity, as I experienced, I'll give you an
- 9:35example, when I was an atheist and I was going all over both
- 9:42the United States and all over Europe, mocking Christians,
- 9:46making fun of them, making fun of faith, as you're doing now,
- 9:50dear Richard, I was walking with six to seven men at any given
- 9:58time, protecting me armed from things that I said that were
- 10:05offensive to Muslims, of Muslims thought were offensive to them.
- 10:09Christians were writing me letters saying, you know, we're
- 10:14going to pray for you. You're misguided, and I think
- 10:17that alone defines for me the distinction between Christianity
- 10:21in general, main mainstream Christianity and mainstream is
- 10:241. Well, I must say I've never met
- 10:26a vicar that I didn't like. I mean, they're always very,
- 10:29very nice people. Yeah.
- 10:32But but nevertheless, the stuff they believe is obvious nonsense
- 10:37and and you, you have to take the whole package because when
- 10:41you talked about Jesus rising from the dead, you don't believe
- 10:44Jesus rose from the dead, surely?
- 10:47I choose to believe that Jesus rose from the dead.
- 10:49You. Choose to believe it.
- 10:51And that is a matter of choice and it's a matter it's, I think
- 10:56we, it has to go back to is there something or is there
- 11:00nothing? And I think you start with there
- 11:03is nothing. And yes, for years I agreed with
- 11:06you, there's nothing. But if you come round to the
- 11:09idea that there might be something much more powerful
- 11:12than we are, something that caused everything else, then
- 11:18something like Jesus rising out of the dead or these other
- 11:21miracles, Jesus being born out of a virgin for that higher
- 11:26power, it's not a big deal. But again, it's a matter of
- 11:29choice. And it is just different planes
- 11:31of perception. And I think here on this plane
- 11:35of perception, having been a former atheist, I don't think
- 11:38this is something we're going to resolve tonight or agree on
- 11:42right now. And so that is where I think
- 11:47it's perhaps some more interesting, even if you choose
- 11:50not to believe, to say, let's at least talk about the value of
- 11:56Christianity for today. For I look at these
- 12:00universities, the most illustrious universities of the
- 12:04West, and you've all shared with me images of young women draped
- 12:12in kefirs, the symbol of Hamas, performing the Muslim prayer,
- 12:17and tell me if those kids are not morally and utterly lost and
- 12:23queers for Palestine. So while you and I and Steven
- 12:33Pinker and all of those wonderful people were locked up
- 12:36in our ivory towers, let's ask ourselves what was happening on
- 12:40the ground. Because in the last 6 decades we
- 12:43pretty much demonized Christianity and the teachings
- 12:46of Christianity out of the public space, out of school, out
- 12:50of universities, and a vacuum occurred.
- 12:53And that vacuum is now being filled, as GK Chesterton said.
- 12:57Not because people have come to reason, but because now they'll
- 13:01believe in anything. There are very awful forces
- 13:05today out there that are claiming the hearts and minds
- 13:08and souls of these young students, and when you say that
- 13:11it's nothing, you offer them nothing.
- 13:14We're getting into the bigger political cultural question.
- 13:17I just feel it's worth pressing one more time on this.
- 13:22What you said, agree to disagree.
- 13:24And I understand, having read Richard's letter to you, that
- 13:27that literal belief is the bit that he can't get past.
- 13:33Are you saying that you don't literally believe those things?
- 13:36You talked about planes of reality.
- 13:37Is it that you see a beauty in those things and choose to
- 13:40suspend your rational judgement? Or do you literally believe
- 13:44them? Yeah.
- 13:45I mean, I think there is something subjective and there's
- 13:47a choice. There are things that you see
- 13:49and perceive that a different person cannot perceive.
- 13:55Art, music. In fact, I think you do enjoy a
- 13:58great deal of Christian art and music.
- 14:02I will look at a painting by Pollock and I will think my 6
- 14:06year old must have spilled all the paint on the canvas and run
- 14:10around. And people are crazy enough to
- 14:14pay millions of dollars and hang it on walls.
- 14:17But I've actually seen people be moved to years staring at a
- 14:22Pollock. That is a plane of perception
- 14:25that is real, but that's also very, very difficult to measure.
- 14:31And it's the same the way you're moved by certain pieces of
- 14:34music. So the fact that I have faith
- 14:37and I choose to have faith because of what I've experienced
- 14:41is just as real for me as it is for the millions of people who
- 14:44believe. But for me, what is even more
- 14:48real is it's, it's the story itself and the the wisdom in
- 14:56that story, the the morality that has come out that has
- 15:00evolved out of that story, the internal debates of millennia
- 15:04long and everything that we inherited from it.
- 15:06It's just too casual to cast that aside.
- 15:09And when we've done it, I think we have caused ourselves a great
- 15:13deal of damage. Thanks for watching this
- 15:15incredible debate between Doctor Richard Dawkins and Ayaan Hirsi
