Latest / Twin Cities Territory / The Twins' big Pablo López question for 2027
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Is this right? Is there only one unbeaten team left
- 0:05Speaker 1: in the NFL?
- 0:05Speaker 2: Is that true?
- 0:08Speaker 1: Is that right, Dan? The 49ers lost?
- 0:12Speaker 2: I haven't seen. Wow.
- 0:14Speaker 3: I wasn't there to watch it happen in Atlanta either.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Welcome to Twin Cities Territory. I blindsided Dan with that one. But,
- 0:24Speaker 1: you know, sometimes you got to pull out the big
- 0:26Speaker 1: guns there. But we– A decent amount to talk about today,
- 0:30Speaker 1: despite it being a long Twins offseason. Pablo Lopez talks
- 0:35Speaker 1: about spending his offseason getting ready for next season. We
- 0:37Speaker 1: talk about what the Twins have riding on that. Big
- 0:40Speaker 1: question mark. Jeff Hoffman underwent surgery this week as well,
- 0:43Speaker 1: and a little late on this, but last week, former
- 0:46Speaker 1: twin Mitch Garver retired. We'll talk about all of that
- 0:49Speaker 1: and more today on the show. Zach Pierce and Dan Hayes,
- 0:53Speaker 1: love the athletic, along with Tyler Duffy, longtime major league
- 0:56Speaker 1: If you like the show, please toss us a like
- 0:58Speaker 1: or subscribe. However you watch or listen, if you're on YouTube,
- 1:02Speaker 1: there's a QR code on the screen right there. We'll
- 1:05Speaker 1: start with Pablo Lopez today, but real quick before we
- 1:08Speaker 1: get there, we are recording this on Wednesday. You are
- 1:10Speaker 1: watching or listening to it on Thursday. which means there
- 1:14Speaker 1: was a World Series game between this very moment that
- 1:16Speaker 1: we're talking and when you're listening to it. So we're
- 1:18Speaker 1: going to not talk about the series just because obviously
- 1:20Speaker 1: the conversation... Congrats.
- 1:22Speaker 2: To the Brewers.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Congrats to the Brewers or maybe back to Milwaukee we
- 1:26Speaker 1: go where the get-in price I'm sure will be roughly
- 1:28Speaker 1: $ 10, 000 if it gets to that point. But we will
- 1:33Speaker 1: give our final thoughts on the World Series maybe on
- 1:35Speaker 1: Monday as well as tee up what should be an
- 1:38Speaker 1: eventful month for the Twins. But we're talking about Pablo
- 1:41Speaker 1: today because Dan had an article just yesterday on The
- 1:44Speaker 1: Athletic about his offseason. As we mentioned last week, he
- 1:49Speaker 1: was a nominee for the Marvin Miller Man of the
- 1:52Speaker 1: Year Award. We found out this morning he did not
- 1:54Speaker 1: get that honor. But the article is mostly about his
- 1:56Speaker 1: efforts to get back from his elbow surgery that kept
- 2:01Speaker 1: him out all of this season. You see a quote
- 2:03Speaker 1: there on the screen if you're watching from Twins GM
- 2:05Speaker 1: Jeremy Zoll saying we'll have a sense of exactly where
- 2:08Speaker 1: he's at come spring training. But we're expecting him to
- 2:10Speaker 1: be full go for the season. Dan, this is usually
- 2:13Speaker 1: a time of year when players are trying to get
- 2:16Speaker 1: a little bit of rest, but that's not the case
- 2:17Speaker 1: for Pablo.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Yeah, he went home immediately right after the season ended.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Pardon me.
- 2:23Speaker 4: He left before the season ended, like maybe on the
- 2:26Speaker 4: Friday of the final weekend. And the reason was that
- 2:29Speaker 4: he was in the middle of his throwing program. and
- 2:32Speaker 4: needed to be able to throw Monday. And so he
- 2:34Speaker 4: drove home, I believe, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, back to Miami
- 2:38Speaker 4: from Minnesota in order to be able to get up
- 2:41Speaker 4: and throw and participate in his throwing program. And he
- 2:44Speaker 4: said it like, typically when the season ends, he usually
- 2:46Speaker 4: takes about three weeks off and you can get a
- 2:49Speaker 4: little out of shape in that time. And he wasn't
- 2:51Speaker 4: going to be able to do that because he just
- 2:52Speaker 4: needed to keep going with his throwing program. The idea
- 2:56Speaker 4: is if it all is on progress or keeps tracking
- 2:59Speaker 4: in the right way, that he would throw and be
- 3:02Speaker 4: ready to throw off a mound about three to three
- 3:05Speaker 4: and a half weeks into November.
- 3:08Speaker 3: His surgery was February 25th.
- 3:11Speaker 4: His first game of catch was August 21. And so
- 3:15Speaker 4: the three-month mark from August 21 is November 21.
- 3:19Speaker 3: So that's where he is.
- 3:20Speaker 4: He right now currently is playing catch and doing all
- 3:23Speaker 4: the things, long toss, doing everything to build up his
- 3:25Speaker 4: arm strength so that he can get on the mound.
- 3:28Speaker 4: And then he will throw on the mound for as
- 3:30Speaker 4: part of his rehab for three months, which would then
- 3:33Speaker 4: put him to the end of January.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Um, and so like he is in.
- 3:38Speaker 4: The middle of this 12 month program and going at
- 3:42Speaker 4: it and enjoying it. Um, remember when he had this
- 3:45Speaker 4: Tommy John, this was his second Tommy John. He had
- 3:47Speaker 4: the internal brace. Um, that's why it's the 12 month
- 3:50Speaker 4: version versus a longer version. There was only a, I
- 3:54Speaker 4: believe a partial tear of his UCL at the time.
- 3:57Speaker 4: which allowed them to use original parts of it and
- 4:01Speaker 4: just use the internal brace, which is probably in the
- 4:04Speaker 4: last seven to eight years that has come along. I
- 4:08Speaker 4: know Rich Hill used it in his offseason and was
- 4:12Speaker 4: one of the first guys. So Pablo's going through this,
- 4:18Speaker 4: and it's been a long process, but you could tell
- 4:22Speaker 4: when we talked to him last how excited he was.
- 4:24Speaker 3: To be where he was. He said, I'm going to
- 4:26Speaker 3: throw a lot of baseballs this offseason.
- 4:28Speaker 4: And that's not typical for him, but it's all in
- 4:31Speaker 4: an effort to be ready for next season.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Tyler, you've been around players going through this. It's just
- 4:39Speaker 1: such a long timeline. How do you keep yourself on it? Yeah,
- 4:43Speaker 1: it's grueling.
- 4:45Speaker 2: The guys I've felt the worst for were guys who
- 4:48Speaker 2: would have it in the minors. And you basically spend–
- 4:52Speaker 2: 18 months of your life in Fort Myers, which at
- 4:55Speaker 2: point guys started calling it Fort misery because it was,
- 4:58Speaker 2: I mean, you're up early, you go do your rehab,
- 5:01Speaker 2: you work out, you know, you do your 800 throws
- 5:04Speaker 2: for the day, whatever it is. And then you sit
- 5:07Speaker 2: and wait for the next morning to come. And it's,
- 5:10Speaker 2: it's trying times. And that's why he took full advantage
- 5:13Speaker 2: of this season. He wanted to be around. He wanted
- 5:15Speaker 2: to be present one to be a good teammate, which
- 5:18Speaker 2: I think is, it says a lot about him, but two,
- 5:20Speaker 2: it's a mental challenge. side of that grind that guys,
- 5:24Speaker 2: I've seen a lot of them, they come out different,
- 5:26Speaker 2: you know, just because they've, you know, changed their outlooks
- 5:29Speaker 2: on life. You know, you start reading, you start doing
- 5:31Speaker 2: all sorts of crazy things. I mean, you're just, you're
- 5:34Speaker 2: in Groundhog Day for a long time. And it is, it's,
- 5:38Speaker 2: it's a long grueling process. And luckily, you know, this
- 5:42Speaker 2: is a streamlined version of it. But at the same point, he's,
- 5:46Speaker 2: he's going to be working all this year He's going
- 5:48Speaker 2: to go into the spring, hopefully be ready once that
- 5:51Speaker 2: time comes, and then there's no real break. So he's
- 5:54Speaker 2: going to go straight for well over a year and
- 5:57Speaker 2: a half of just ripping baseballs, and it's always an
- 6:00Speaker 2: interesting one at the halfway point. I know they figure
- 6:03Speaker 2: out how to tailor the innings to make sure guys
- 6:06Speaker 2: are healthy and recovering, but getting there is half the battle,
- 6:11Speaker 2: and then rolling straight into a full season afterwards is
- 6:14Speaker 2: going to be the big question mark. you know, how
- 6:17Speaker 2: they work that, whether they go six man to start
- 6:19Speaker 2: the year, whatever there's teams have found unique ways to,
- 6:21Speaker 2: to navigate it, but it's, you know, good on him.
- 6:24Speaker 2: He he's made the most of this season and, you know,
- 6:27Speaker 2: it was in the mix for the Marvin Miller award
- 6:29Speaker 2: and all these great things he's done Clemente, I think
- 6:31Speaker 2: as well. You know, he's, he's doing everything right. And,
- 6:35Speaker 2: you know, a guy like him, we know he's doing it,
- 6:37Speaker 2: you know, to the best of his ability. So I've,
- 6:39Speaker 2: I've no doubt he'll be ready to rock whenever the
- 6:41Speaker 2: season ultimately does start.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I like the reading was the, first example of a
- 6:47Speaker 1: crazy thing to do with your spare time.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Well, because dude, it's like, like when they opened that
- 6:52Speaker 2: complex down there, it was like the wifi, you, you
- 6:55Speaker 2: couldn't even open like some like shopping stuff. Like your,
- 6:58Speaker 2: your internet's blocked, your TV channels are limited. And then
- 7:02Speaker 2: it's like, what do I do in this solitary confinement
- 7:05Speaker 2: for the next 18 months? So it's a, yeah, it's
- 7:08Speaker 2: something guys think of fishing, you know, you can only
- 7:11Speaker 2: go to the beach so many times before that's the
- 7:13Speaker 2: same thing.
- 7:13Speaker 3: It's just, yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Fort Misery is the nickname it received from a few guys.
- 7:19Speaker 3: And his rehab is different. So obviously this is his
- 7:22Speaker 3: second one.
- 7:23Speaker 4: And he talked about the timeline difference because he had
- 7:27Speaker 4: this in 2013 going into 2014 when he was in
- 7:29Speaker 4: the minors. And his cleanup or the 12-month process or
- 7:34Speaker 4: whatever it was ended in like August. And he had
- 7:38Speaker 4: the off-season to rest. Or maybe it ended in November.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Whereas he's going to end in January 25th. his 12 months, um,
- 7:46Speaker 4: last time it ended in November and he had a
- 7:48Speaker 4: normal off season to kind of prepare for the season.
- 7:51Speaker 4: And I think that helped him a ton. Um, and
- 7:53Speaker 4: he said, he's going to have to be aware and, and,
- 7:57Speaker 4: you know, paying attention to his body and know what
- 8:00Speaker 4: is good and what workloads aren't working and be, you know,
- 8:05Speaker 4: communicative with the training staff. Now that's one advantage he
- 8:08Speaker 4: will definitely have. And this is a guy who A,
- 8:10Speaker 4: understands his body, knows what's working, what's not, is alert
- 8:15Speaker 4: to things. We've seen it when he's come back from
- 8:19Speaker 4: hamstring injuries, knowing where he could push it and where
- 8:21Speaker 4: he couldn't, and being able to express that to the
- 8:26Speaker 4: training staff. So this is somebody that 100% is dialed
- 8:30Speaker 4: in on that aspect, but it's still a very tricky
- 8:32Speaker 4: part of this because, like you said, he'll be ripping
- 8:35Speaker 4: pitches for.
- 8:36Speaker 3: 18 months at that point. He will start.
- 8:39Speaker 4: He started throwing in August, just ramp up slowly, 50 feet,
- 8:43Speaker 4: then 75 feet, then 90 feet, then.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Go all the way to long toss.
- 8:48Speaker 4: But the buildup is grueling and physically taxing, even though
- 8:52Speaker 4: guys love it because they're finally doing stuff. And then
- 8:56Speaker 4: to do three months of a throwing program to get
- 8:59Speaker 4: yourself ready for the season. But just there's no let up.
- 9:04Speaker 4: At that point, he will be throwing pitches in spring training.
- 9:07Speaker 4: And that is definitely– uh, part of the, what makes
- 9:11Speaker 4: this a challenging, like it's, you can't expect 2023 Pablo.
- 9:16Speaker 4: You shouldn't expect 2023 Pablo. Just, you never know the guy,
- 9:20Speaker 4: the guy's amazing and I wouldn't put it past him,
- 9:22Speaker 4: but it's not like you can mark down. We're going
- 9:25Speaker 4: to have 14 and eight with the three, seven ERA
- 9:28Speaker 4: and 200 strikeouts and 180 innings.
- 9:30Speaker 3: You don't know what you're gonna get.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:33Speaker 1: The, uh, the history of guys who've had to tell
- 9:36Speaker 1: me John's is very mixed. Uh, Fangraphs did a story
- 9:41Speaker 1: in 2023 that had numbers that I couldn't begin to comprehend,
- 9:44Speaker 1: but there was an English phrase that I did understand,
- 9:46Speaker 1: which was that they found no observable trend correlation between
- 9:51Speaker 1: worse performance, better performance. Some guys have been great. Nathan
- 9:54Speaker 1: Eovaldi is a recent name that comes to mind. Two
- 9:57Speaker 1: World Series titles, two All-Star games after his second Tommy John.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Others have not, and it's not really surprising that that
- 10:03Speaker 1: would be the case, that sometimes it's a godsend and
- 10:07Speaker 1: gives the player another shot. Other times, not so much.
- 10:10Speaker 1: But Tyler, the Twins, obviously, anytime you look at the
- 10:15Speaker 1: next season, you're hoping for progression, improvement, at the very least,
- 10:20Speaker 1: maintaining the level players were at the year before, it
- 10:24Speaker 1: might be the biggest question mark for their success, what
- 10:26Speaker 1: they can get out of him at the top of
- 10:27Speaker 1: that rotation.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's the big if is, you know, you
- 10:32Speaker 2: plug him in. I mean, if he comes out hot, like,
- 10:35Speaker 2: do you make him your number one or do you
- 10:38Speaker 2: work him in as the number four or five just
- 10:40Speaker 2: so he's not throwing as frequently? You know, like I said,
- 10:43Speaker 2: there's a lot of ways to navigate it. It's going
- 10:46Speaker 2: to be tricky. You know, and to your point, the
- 10:48Speaker 2: guys with double Tommy Johns, I think in the world
- 10:51Speaker 2: we live in now with all the not just data
- 10:54Speaker 2: that's available on your pitches, but the biomechanics stuff, you know,
- 10:58Speaker 2: there's predictors now. I think that teams have figured out,
- 11:01Speaker 2: you know, the way your arm works, the sequencing and
- 11:04Speaker 2: things like that. And I'm sure there's already in place
- 11:06Speaker 2: plans where if it is a little tweak or if
- 11:09Speaker 2: they say, hey, it was just bad luck. You know,
- 11:12Speaker 2: he's not a guy that I watch him throw where
- 11:14Speaker 2: it looks overly violent. You know, he's a smoother guy,
- 11:17Speaker 2: kind of a lower slot delivery. Like he doesn't have
- 11:20Speaker 2: that aggressive move, at least to my eye as a player.
- 11:24Speaker 2: And so it's, it is so individual, like Dan, like
- 11:28Speaker 2: you said, in the, those reports it's, you know, I
- 11:31Speaker 2: play with Cole Reagan's with the Royals and he's a
- 11:33Speaker 2: double Tommy John guy and he's had some issues pop
- 11:35Speaker 2: up here and there. You know, it's, it's so hard
- 11:39Speaker 2: to know. it's so hard to, to predict anything, but
- 11:42Speaker 2: it is, it's going to come down to him being
- 11:44Speaker 2: honest at times, whether he feels a little soreness, maybe
- 11:47Speaker 2: one time through and Hey, skip me this time, you know,
- 11:50Speaker 2: I'll throw a light pen or take a week off. Like,
- 11:53Speaker 2: and you can navigate it with putting them in that
- 11:55Speaker 2: lower spot in the rotation where you, Hey, we got
- 11:58Speaker 2: an off day. We're going to skip over you. This
- 12:00Speaker 2: kind of like pre-lip this year, you know, they handled
- 12:02Speaker 2: pre-lip very well. I think that's the ideal way that
- 12:06Speaker 2: Pablo gets used in like, say like, break comes and
- 12:10Speaker 2: he's rolling and feels great, then they can kind of
- 12:13Speaker 2: move him towards the middle of that. Like depending on
- 12:15Speaker 2: the seasons going, all these things. And I think we
- 12:18Speaker 2: can't glaze over the fact too, that there's so much
- 12:21Speaker 2: depth that there will be ways to navigate this for them.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Assuming all these guys stay, you know, but we said
- 12:28Speaker 2: what there's like eight guys that are potential candidates for
- 12:31Speaker 2: the rotation. Like there's a lot of options. You know,
- 12:34Speaker 2: you can get guys tempered in the big leagues, you know,
- 12:36Speaker 2: pop them up for a start or two here and there.
- 12:38Speaker 2: You know, but it's at the end of the day,
- 12:41Speaker 2: it's so hard to know until you get there in
- 12:42Speaker 2: that game mound with that adrenaline and test that elbow
- 12:46Speaker 2: the first time and, you know, 20 more times for
- 12:48Speaker 2: that matter. It's, you know, it's a long season, so
- 12:51Speaker 2: you never know.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Dan, it feels like you're going to have a similar
- 12:55Speaker 1: season preview article next year. If everything goes right, here's
- 13:00Speaker 1: what to expect.
- 13:02Speaker 4: Yeah, they definitely need to take care of that issue
- 13:06Speaker 4: by building themselves out with depth. We've talked about that
- 13:09Speaker 4: in free agency because you can't hinge.
- 13:12Speaker 3: You've seen it.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Happen a couple years in a row where, A, we
- 13:16Speaker 4: have three really great players, like three star players. And
- 13:20Speaker 4: if those guys aren't doing it, we're screwed. That's been
- 13:24Speaker 4: the formula. And I think you want to insulate yourself
- 13:26Speaker 4: against that, especially with the guy coming off of his
- 13:29Speaker 4: second Tommy John. Again, Pablo is one of those guys
- 13:32Speaker 4: that knows himself so well that it will help in this,
- 13:36Speaker 4: that he will not hold back and say, I got
- 13:39Speaker 4: to take it back off.
- 13:41Speaker 3: I got to back off here. Or I can go.
- 13:44Speaker 3: You guys got to trust me. I can go.
- 13:46Speaker 4: This is a guy who is that smart, and he
- 13:48Speaker 4: has that kind of, I don't know, cash with the team.
- 13:53Speaker 3: They know who he is, right?
- 13:55Speaker 4: And they understand that he really does know himself well.
- 14:00Speaker 3: But you're right about the mixed bag. I mean, Nathan,
- 14:02Speaker 3: you have all these great.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Jamison tie on had a really good run after his
- 14:06Speaker 4: drew Rasmussen's had three drew Rasmussen's had three and look
- 14:10Speaker 4: at his last two years, but there's a bunch of
- 14:12Speaker 4: guys that didn't work out for. And, and so it
- 14:15Speaker 4: certainly is a 50, 50, it's a coin flip. Um,
- 14:19Speaker 4: maybe you feel better because it's Pablo on his side
- 14:22Speaker 4: and like, he is so just regimented with his workouts.
- 14:27Speaker 3: He is a workout machine. his pregame is ridiculous.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Like, like I've been able to see his stretch and
- 14:36Speaker 4: it's frightening to me that somebody physically can do what
- 14:39Speaker 4: he does. Like, I'm like the, you are not built
- 14:43Speaker 4: the same as me when I've seen him do a stretch.
- 14:46Speaker 4: So he's got all these things where he's tip top.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 14:49Speaker 4: And I think that will help, but you always have
- 14:52Speaker 4: to know that you're going into it with, it can
- 14:55Speaker 4: feel something in, for.
- 14:57Speaker 3: A week in May and maybe you do need to
- 14:58Speaker 3: back off and you need that depth without question.
- 15:01Speaker 4: And so it's, it's partly why I think Joe Ryan
- 15:04Speaker 4: will stay, you know, they're going to take a gamble
- 15:07Speaker 4: on him unless you can get, I, unless somebody was
- 15:10Speaker 4: willing to trade a lot for Joe Ryan and you
- 15:12Speaker 4: can bring in somebody with more team control. Um, I mean,
- 15:16Speaker 4: I think, you know, with the, with the precarious nature
- 15:19Speaker 4: of Pablo there, regardless if they think he's going to
- 15:22Speaker 4: be full go, um, you probably want to start the
- 15:24Speaker 4: season with Taj Bradley and Joe Ryan atop your rotation
- 15:28Speaker 4: to have those two guys as good as they can
- 15:31Speaker 4: be leading the rotation and then figure out the rest
- 15:34Speaker 4: behind them. Even with as much young arms and promise
- 15:37Speaker 4: and Abel and Zebby and pre-lip and, you know, everywhere
- 15:41Speaker 4: you look, there's, there's young guys, but I think that
- 15:44Speaker 4: certainly is a big, you know, we'll play a factor
- 15:47Speaker 4: in how they put together the rotation this off season.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Never have too much starting pitching, right? That's what it
- 15:54Speaker 1: comes down to. Speaking of injured pitchers, Jeff Hoffman, reliever,
- 15:59Speaker 1: underwent surgery this week for a bone chip removal and
- 16:03Speaker 1: a debridement, which I always have to look up what
- 16:06Speaker 1: the hell that is.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Debridement's a weird one.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Removal of dead, damaged, infected, or foreign material from a
- 16:11Speaker 1: wound or burn. Good God, is he okay, Dan?
- 16:15Speaker 3: Yeah, he's okay. Okay. It sounds so horrible. I love
- 16:18Speaker 3: loose bodies.
- 16:20Speaker 2: It's letting the muscle breathe. That's what it really is.
- 16:23Speaker 2: It's what? Um, they like go in and they open
- 16:27Speaker 2: it up and like, it's your fashion and everything out
- 16:29Speaker 2: of the way. And they like the muscle basically gets
- 16:31Speaker 2: so tight that it like cuts off blood flow. And
- 16:34Speaker 2: so it's like, they got to let it breathe. Like
- 16:36Speaker 2: it's literally what it means. And yeah, that definition is
- 16:39Speaker 2: terrifying though.
- 16:41Speaker 3: It is right. It sounds horrible. No.
- 16:44Speaker 4: So look, um, he, uh, We knew that he had
- 16:51Speaker 4: some elbow stuff at the end of the season. His
- 16:54Speaker 4: save against San Francisco in that last road series, he
- 16:59Speaker 4: was visibly off that day.
- 17:00Speaker 3: And it looked really bad.
- 17:03Speaker 4: And they shut him down with two days left in
- 17:06Speaker 4: the season and said, put him on the IL. And
- 17:09Speaker 4: that allowed them to bring somebody up. But they just
- 17:12Speaker 4: knew it wasn't worth it to pitch again. because something
- 17:15Speaker 4: was going on, but they thought it was going to
- 17:17Speaker 4: be rest. Clearly rest didn't work. Cause here we are
- 17:20Speaker 4: one month later since the season ended. And he had
- 17:24Speaker 4: that procedure on Tuesday.
- 17:25Speaker 1: We'll get some more examples of rest, not being enough
- 17:30Speaker 1: in a minute, but keep going.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Sorry to.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 17:34Speaker 4: He, he, he is expected to be shut down for
- 17:37Speaker 4: eight weeks. So that puts him what we're, we're October 20th.
- 17:42Speaker 4: So end of December, is when his shutdown should end
- 17:46Speaker 4: right there and allow him to start his throwing program. Duff,
- 17:50Speaker 4: you can talk about what it takes, the timeline for
- 17:53Speaker 4: a reliever, but it sounds like he's probably about 13
- 17:56Speaker 4: weeks out to be throw ready, essentially.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and being a reliever, it shortens those timelines a
- 18:04Speaker 2: lot because a lot of the time for these Tommy
- 18:08Speaker 2: Johns especially, it's the literal hundred throws that these guys
- 18:13Speaker 2: have to go make and then it's you know throw
- 18:16Speaker 2: bullpens we're gonna throw 35 fastballs today and then we're
- 18:18Speaker 2: gonna throw 60 pitch bullpen and 70 pitch bullpens and
- 18:21Speaker 2: it's just like it's a mind-numbing amount of throws to
- 18:25Speaker 2: make in a non-competitive environment non-game and for a reliever
- 18:30Speaker 2: because of these you know surgeons have gotten so much
- 18:33Speaker 2: better and and the doctors know exactly how to treat
- 18:36Speaker 2: these guys the process for a reliever has very much
- 18:40Speaker 2: been streamlined. And so, you know, when I was first
- 18:42Speaker 2: coming up, I wouldn't pick up a baseball till Christmas anyways.
- 18:46Speaker 2: And with the looming, you know, potential of missing a
- 18:50Speaker 2: few weeks of the season already in the, on the horizon,
- 18:53Speaker 2: like that kind of works out perfect, honestly, for both
- 18:57Speaker 2: of these guys, you know, it may sneak Pablo maybe
- 18:59Speaker 2: a week or two where he can kind of throttle
- 19:01Speaker 2: down a little bit. And Jeff can, kind of just
- 19:04Speaker 2: go about a normal off season. I don't know what
- 19:06Speaker 2: he normally does, you know, but in this situation that
- 19:09Speaker 2: gives him plenty of time to make sure he's good.
- 19:12Speaker 2: If he needs to take it slow for a week,
- 19:14Speaker 2: he can like, it's, I think he'll, his will be
- 19:17Speaker 2: a non-issue. Obviously it's surgery at the end of the day.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Like it's not, it's not like, it's not scary, but
- 19:24Speaker 2: something like this, it's just make sure your scars healed
- 19:26Speaker 2: up good. You know, the muscles responding well and hit
- 19:30Speaker 2: the ground running. Once you start throwing, you know, he's,
- 19:32Speaker 2: And again, he's a pro. He's been around. He's had
- 19:34Speaker 2: things before. It's nothing new. It's just another add it
- 19:38Speaker 2: to the routine.
- 19:40Speaker 4: I imagine this will be for a guy who's 33.
- 19:42Speaker 4: I imagine this will be like a a nice thing
- 19:46Speaker 4: for him to not feel that scar, the, the, what
- 19:50Speaker 4: he's been feeling and clearly has been managing.
- 19:52Speaker 3: And he said it. Yeah.
- 19:56Speaker 4: He's, he's been pitching for a long time and to
- 19:59Speaker 4: go in there and clean it up. And this one,
- 20:01Speaker 4: I'm sure that arthroscopic surgery. Now I'd love to know
- 20:04Speaker 4: the advance it's been made in like the last 30 years,
- 20:08Speaker 4: because I'm sure it used to be a lot scarier.
- 20:10Speaker 2: You've seen Tony Oliva's knees before?
- 20:13Speaker 4: I've not seen Tony Oliva's knees before, but yeah, I
- 20:17Speaker 4: believe it.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I used to say it looks like they cut him
- 20:20Speaker 2: with a license plate instead of a scalpel. I mean,
- 20:24Speaker 2: it looks like a grenade went off when I look
- 20:27Speaker 2: at his knees. I'm like, good God, having surgery back
- 20:29Speaker 2: then must have been just the ultimate dice roll.
- 20:34Speaker 4: It's crazy, too, because if Jeff Hoffman was pitching threw
- 20:37Speaker 4: something when he got to the twins he had 27
- 20:39Speaker 4: strikeouts in 18 innings 250 era um and and a
- 20:44Speaker 4: little bit of it was off that last day like
- 20:46Speaker 4: he was as advertised and you know it was gonna
- 20:50Speaker 4: look like i think between he and kramer those are
- 20:52Speaker 4: two nice additions of deadline that still will pay off
- 20:56Speaker 4: this season aj mentor of course is a free agent
- 20:58Speaker 4: but those two guys um are under contract one more
- 21:02Speaker 4: year and the twins definitely want to protect that's why
- 21:04Speaker 4: they shut him down at the end and said, let's
- 21:07Speaker 4: see how this goes with rest.
- 21:08Speaker 3: And here they are a month later needing the surgery.
- 21:11Speaker 4: But, you know, it's definitely, you could tell he was
- 21:15Speaker 4: bugged by it because he said, if.
- 21:16Speaker 3: We were playing for anything, I'd be pitching through this.
- 21:19Speaker 4: But, you know, in hindsight, that's probably good for his
- 21:22Speaker 4: longevity that he didn't have to pitch through it because
- 21:24Speaker 4: he'd had a long October the year before pitching all
- 21:26Speaker 4: the way into the World Series, into game seven of
- 21:29Speaker 4: the World Series.
- 21:29Speaker 3: So there's a lot of usage on that arm.
- 21:32Speaker 4: And he's pitched in a lot of Octobers lately, back
- 21:35Speaker 4: with the Phillies, you know, He's been a guy, especially
- 21:38Speaker 4: since the Twins cut him in spring training in 2023.
- 21:42Speaker 4: He's really been a guy since that point in the majors.
- 21:46Speaker 4: When you're a guy, you get a lot of usage.
- 21:51Speaker 4: I remember talking about him in spring training in 2023.
- 21:56Speaker 4: He'd come from the Reds, I believe, at that time
- 21:59Speaker 4: on a minor league deal. He'd been with a few
- 22:04Speaker 4: people and all the reporters were like, Hey, you're going
- 22:07Speaker 4: to love this guy. He's awesome to talk to, but
- 22:10Speaker 4: B he's figuring it out clearly. And his slider just
- 22:14Speaker 4: changed his career around. I mean, 2023, he was a
- 22:17Speaker 4: nobody as far as he'd had a couple of good
- 22:19Speaker 4: innings as a reliever, but look how quickly that kind
- 22:22Speaker 4: of thing can change. Like he was the, he was
- 22:24Speaker 4: still good on the potential side, but he came to
- 22:27Speaker 4: camp on a minor league deal and you look what
- 22:29Speaker 4: he's done since then in the majors. It's been an
- 22:32Speaker 4: incredible run. Um, And that's how it works sometimes with
- 22:35Speaker 4: the relievers. You can be a late bloomer.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 22:42Speaker 1: In other news, I mentioned that I'm a little late
- 22:44Speaker 1: to this. It happened last week, but former Twins catcher
- 22:47Speaker 1: Mitch Garver announced his retirement last week. He played his
- 22:52Speaker 1: first five, 10-season solo first five with the Twins, had
- 22:55Speaker 1: his best season in 2019 with the Bomba Squad Twins,
- 22:59Speaker 1: 31 homers, 273 average, 4.1. Van Graaff's War, one of
- 23:04Speaker 1: the better catcher seasons in recent history. And, of course,
- 23:11Speaker 1: immediately after leaving, the Twins won a World Series with
- 23:13Speaker 1: another team, in this case, Texas.
- 23:16Speaker 2: But, Tyler, you played with him?
- 23:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:19Speaker 2: It's been a lot of time. Garb saw. Oh, he's great, dude.
- 23:24Speaker 2: And I loved him. So it was funny. We didn't
- 23:26Speaker 2: get drafted together, but we ended up playing together. So
- 23:28Speaker 2: I didn't know, like, his whole backstory. You know, he's
- 23:30Speaker 2: senior signed and all that good stuff. And, you know, he's, he's,
- 23:35Speaker 2: he's quiet, confident kind of guy. And so it took
- 23:37Speaker 2: a while to get to know him. But once, once
- 23:39Speaker 2: I figured out him and how, how he ticks, you know,
- 23:43Speaker 2: we had some great times together. And like, like I
- 23:45Speaker 2: was talking before the show, you know, he and I
- 23:48Speaker 2: both probably had our best years there in 19, obviously
- 23:50Speaker 2: winning a world series makes it a great year, no
- 23:52Speaker 2: matter what. But, you know, he's great, great teammate, great
- 23:56Speaker 2: guy to have in the locker room, you know, through,
- 23:58Speaker 2: through thick and thin, he was just grinding and always
- 24:01Speaker 2: working and, um you know it was it was fun
- 24:04Speaker 2: man we like i said we had some we had
- 24:05Speaker 2: some great groups uh in that locker room and and
- 24:08Speaker 2: he was definitely part of the reason why and um
- 24:12Speaker 2: you know congrats to him i mean he's he took
- 24:14Speaker 2: his opportunity that the twins gave him and and he
- 24:17Speaker 2: definitely made the most of it you know got him
- 24:18Speaker 2: a nice little contract from seattle world series ring 10
- 24:22Speaker 2: years in the big leagues i mean can't ask for
- 24:25Speaker 2: much else and he'll be able to do whatever he
- 24:27Speaker 2: wants now i'm sure I think he's a guy who
- 24:29Speaker 2: likes hitting in the game enough. I wouldn't be surprised
- 24:33Speaker 2: if he's around in another form or fashion in the
- 24:36Speaker 2: short future.
- 24:38Speaker 4: He was one of the more intense guys, and he
- 24:42Speaker 4: had that intense face. But then when you got him
- 24:46Speaker 4: to smile and relax, he was just amazing. I respected
- 24:51Speaker 4: the intensity because he was– think about this. When he
- 24:53Speaker 4: got to the majors, he was 27 years old. And
- 24:57Speaker 4: he got up to, he gets the majors at age 27.
- 25:01Speaker 4: Hang on. I was 26 in 2017. He had that
- 25:05Speaker 4: cup of coffee, like 20 games at the end of
- 25:07Speaker 4: the season. And they brought him up in 2018. Uh,
- 25:11Speaker 4: and it was going to be him as the backup.
- 25:13Speaker 4: It was going to be Jason Castro as the, as
- 25:15Speaker 4: the main guy and Jason Castro hurt his knees, uh,
- 25:19Speaker 4: In April of 2018. And all of a sudden, Mitch Garver,
- 25:22Speaker 4: who had 23 games in 2017, Mitch Garver, who had
- 25:26Speaker 4: no real book on the league, became the catcher. And
- 25:30Speaker 4: had to learn it. It was him and Bobby Wilson
- 25:32Speaker 4: were the backstops in 2018. Bobby Wilson had been brought
- 25:35Speaker 4: in on a minor league deal. Another great guy. An
- 25:40Speaker 4: unbelievable guy who's already stuck around in the coaching realm.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Like one of the smarter guys I've dealt with, Bobby Wilson.
- 25:47Speaker 4: So he got to coach up Mitch Garver for that
- 25:50Speaker 4: 2018 season. And in 2019, Mitch Garver was so confident
- 25:53Speaker 4: and so good, and he could hit a fastball. And
- 25:57Speaker 4: he hit a lot of them in 2019. But I've
- 25:59Speaker 4: told this story before, but on April 29th of 19,
- 26:04Speaker 4: Twins beat the Astros 1-0, beat Justin Verlander 1-0 on
- 26:08Speaker 4: an E-Ray Adrianza solo homer. And after the game, Mitch
- 26:13Speaker 4: Garver told me and Doe Young Park were making the playoffs.
- 26:16Speaker 3: And it was like, you're crazy, man. It's April.
- 26:20Speaker 4: And after the Twins lost 3-4 to Cleveland in August
- 26:24Speaker 4: at home, and I believe that either put Cleveland ahead
- 26:27Speaker 4: or tied the division race, Mitch Garver was like, I'm
- 26:31Speaker 4: not kidding.
- 26:31Speaker 3: We still have this. We got this.
- 26:33Speaker 4: And he was right because the schedule played the Twins' favor,
- 26:36Speaker 4: that last part of it, but also– The twins were
- 26:39Speaker 4: just really good.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Guys won the.
- 26:40Speaker 4: Division by eight games in 2019. Awesome postseason in 23
- 26:46Speaker 4: with the Rangers. Had three homers, had 13 or 14 RBIs.
- 26:51Speaker 4: It was like 12 for 53 on the batting average,
- 26:53Speaker 4: so not great there.
- 26:54Speaker 3: But three homers, including a three-run jack in the World Series.
- 26:59Speaker 4: And honestly, one of my favorite guys to cover. He's
- 27:04Speaker 4: just very honest, always had a good opinion on stuff.
- 27:08Speaker 4: had respect of the guys in the clubhouse and, you know,
- 27:12Speaker 4: knew what he was talking about.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Let's not talk about that 2019 post-season at all, but
- 27:19Speaker 1: just like, yeah.
- 27:20Speaker 3: That was a great time.
- 27:22Speaker 1: 101 win team, which was the best in a long time.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Not ever.
- 27:30Speaker 2: I don't think for the times, but.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Like, What's crazy about that is if they had done
- 27:37Speaker 1: that this year, they're the number one seed. But that year,
- 27:40Speaker 1: both of the other division winners had better records. And,
- 27:43Speaker 1: of course, they had to play the Yankees.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Well, no, it's the bouncy balls that everyone had to do. Yeah.
- 27:52Speaker 2: All right.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Well, so long, Mitch. I think he was set to
- 27:54Speaker 1: be a free agent, too, wasn't he? I think we
- 27:56Speaker 1: mentioned him.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Yeah, he was. He was around with Seattle this year,
- 28:00Speaker 2: here and there. And then, yeah, it was like, we're
- 28:04Speaker 2: getting on that other side where it's hard to bounce
- 28:06Speaker 2: back after a night game for the day game, especially
- 28:09Speaker 2: being behind the behind home plate grinding a little bit.
- 28:12Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure. I mean, we're talking about a guy
- 28:13Speaker 3: that's gonna be 36 years old.
- 28:15Speaker 4: Um, and, and the hips have been bugging him probably
- 28:20Speaker 4: since 2021.
- 28:21Speaker 3: So like he hit his wall. Yeah.
- 28:25Speaker 2: He got paid.
- 28:27Speaker 3: He got his, his bag of cash.
- 28:29Speaker 4: He had really good success after he left, but you know,
- 28:33Speaker 4: it catches up with you and, you can't really sell
- 28:36Speaker 4: yourself as a catcher anymore when you're probably capable of
- 28:39Speaker 4: catching like 40 games, 50 games. And I'm sure he
- 28:43Speaker 4: was thinking about that. And his kids are getting to
- 28:45Speaker 4: that age now. I think his son was born in 2020.
- 28:49Speaker 4: So his son's probably six or seven years old. And
- 28:52Speaker 4: I know, I think he has a daughter behind that.
- 28:54Speaker 4: I can't remember, but he has a second child who's
- 28:56Speaker 4: probably around four years old.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Two boys.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Takes up a little time.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Two boys, okay, yeah.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it does. Mom needs help keeping him in line
- 29:02Speaker 2: at home.
- 29:04Speaker 3: From experience.
- 29:08Speaker 1: On that note, I mentioned earlier that we would talk
- 29:11Speaker 1: more about rest not being enough. Why can't we have
- 29:15Speaker 1: nice things in Minnesota, guys? The Timberwolves looked so good.
- 29:19Speaker 4: So good.
- 29:21Speaker 1: And now Anthony Edwards needs surgery and he's out for
- 29:23Speaker 1: two months. Because rest wasn't enough in the offseason. They
- 29:27Speaker 1: tried the rest.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Didn't work.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Wasn't enough. Love that he still scored two. 47 points
- 29:32Speaker 1: on a bum knee on the second night of a
- 29:34Speaker 1: back-to-back before the injury, but it's just never-ending. Now, it
- 29:39Speaker 1: hasn't been sports fan, I have to look at the
- 29:42Speaker 1: optimistic side, which is this will spare him some wear
- 29:46Speaker 1: and tear. And when he comes back, as long as
- 29:48Speaker 1: they can get in the playoffs.
- 29:51Speaker 3: Hey, the real season doesn't start until after Christmas. I mean,
- 29:53Speaker 3: everyone makes it anyway.
- 29:54Speaker 2: 48 teams in the playoffs.
- 30:00Speaker 4: I had not watched any of their games, but I
- 30:03Speaker 4: can tell you from watching my timelines, people going nuts
- 30:06Speaker 4: over the Wolves. And it seemed like, especially when you
- 30:09Speaker 4: bring in Jonathan Kaminga as a depth guy, as maybe
- 30:15Speaker 4: your fifth or sixth best player, that's a really good
- 30:18Speaker 4: place to be. But, you know, you had to bring
- 30:22Speaker 4: up the Niners earlier. Why'd you do that? That's why
- 30:25Speaker 4: you can't have nice things. You brought up the Niners earlier.
- 30:27Speaker 4: I was there in Atlanta on Sunday. and got to
- 30:31Speaker 4: see their first loss in person. And you know when
- 30:34Speaker 4: I knew they were screwed? Because the Falcons cheated. First
- 30:36Speaker 4: of all, the refs were terrible in that game. They
- 30:39Speaker 4: truly were. But the Falcons absolutely 100% cheated. They brought
- 30:45Speaker 4: out big boy.
- 30:45Speaker 3: From outcast at halftime and had him do a concert.
- 30:49Speaker 4: Like seriously, like you big boy, like this isn't the
- 30:53Speaker 4: super bowl. This isn't like the playoffs. This is week seven.
- 30:59Speaker 4: And the Falcons brought out big boy. They really brought
- 31:01Speaker 4: out the, the big hitters. And it was a close game.
- 31:04Speaker 4: Niners were in the lead at that point, but it
- 31:05Speaker 4: was all Falcons after that. It wasn't in the script.
- 31:08Speaker 1: It doesn't matter.
- 31:09Speaker 4: Hey, Niners got, Niners trade for DeForest Buckner on a,
- 31:13Speaker 4: on Tuesday, Tuesday, And upgraded their biggest weakness.
- 31:18Speaker 3: So I'm not too concerned.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Falcons are a weird team.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Crushed the Packers in Green Bay, beat the 49ers, but
- 31:26Speaker 1: are 3-4 overall.
- 31:27Speaker 4: I like Pennix as their quarterback, though, because all they need...
- 31:31Speaker 4: Now we're going to something else. They have two great players.
- 31:36Speaker 4: They have a great receiver in Drake London. They have
- 31:38Speaker 4: a great tight end in Kyle Pitts. Pitts, the only
- 31:41Speaker 4: quarterback that seemed to access him in his entire career
- 31:44Speaker 4: is Penix. Penix is a check down guy. And when
- 31:47Speaker 4: you have Bajon Robinson as your running back, you don't
- 31:50Speaker 4: need a whole lot. You're going to have space. Penix,
- 31:52Speaker 4: when he's healthy, he can move that team. They just
- 31:57Speaker 4: out-possessed the Niners. It was like 31-29 on time of
- 32:00Speaker 4: possession every day.
- 32:01Speaker 3: He's a good quarterback.
- 32:02Speaker 4: He's just had... so many knee injuries. So it's a,
- 32:07Speaker 4: they're a weird team.
- 32:08Speaker 1: We're laying the groundwork to convert this into an NFL podcast.
- 32:11Speaker 1: If we have to, if the lockout never ends.
- 32:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Or maybe, maybe the world's first Minnesota, Houston Bay area
- 32:19Speaker 1: podcast could also be an option. You know, we'd have
- 32:22Speaker 1: the market cornered.
- 32:23Speaker 2: We'd have the market cornered bridge that needs to be built.
