- 0:00Do you think that we are measuring wealth the wrong way in our culture?
- 0:04Absolutely.
- 0:05Do you know that 63% of all millionaires have never made over $100,000 a year?
- 0:11They've gotten there because they invested and they watched what they spent.
- 0:15They weren't buying Ferraris, they weren't buying Lamborghinis.
- 0:18When I see someone pull up in a Lamborghini or Ferrari, I automatically know they don't have any money.
- 0:23I have a client who's worth $3 billion.
- 0:25He pulls up in a Honda Civic.
- 0:26He, he's wearing flip flops, shorts and a T shirt.
- 0:30You would never know.
- 0:31Broke has very little to do with what's in your pocket or your bank account.
- 0:34Okay.
- 0:35Broke is a mentality.
- 0:36It is someone that doesn't meet your ambition, drive, or work ethic.
- 0:40I've known men that have more money than God and have been broke.
- 0:43Looking wealthy is different than building.
- 0:45Oh my goodness, where did we go wrong in that?
- 0:47Like, it's almost more important to look wealthy.
- 0:49Yes.
- 0:50Than to actually have it.
- 0:51Yes.
- 0:51Let me tell you, the first tip is that you are better with money than your husband, as most middle aged women do not have the confidence to start investing.
- 0:59But women have been proven to be better investors.
- 1:09What if the person you're dating has plenty of money but is still completely broke?
- 1:13And what if some of the things you've been taught to associate with wealth, designer bags, beautiful houses, expensive vacations.
- 1:21Actually tell us almost nothing about whether someone is financially secure?
- 1:25My guest today has built a career saying that they things about money that most people are too polite to say.
- 1:31Patty ASAI is a financial expert, attorney, former banking executive, and author of the brilliantly titled Never Date a Broke the Financial Freedom Playbook.
- 1:41Known as the Duchess of decorum on social media, she's become a powerful voice on money, ambition, relationships, and financial independence.
- 1:48The delivery that's smart, funny, and unapologetically direct.
- 1:53Today we're talking about the difference between looking rich and being rich.
- 1:57Whether money inevitably creates power in relationships.
- 2:00Why successful women are still judged for wanting successful partners.
- 2:05The seductive new fantasy of financial dependence.
- 2:08And what happens when you reach midlife and suddenly ask, wait, where's mine?
- 2:13Patti asai, welcome to the iconic midlife.
- 2:16Welcome to the iconic midlife.
- 2:18Patty, it's so good to see you today.
- 2:20I'm so happy to be here.
- 2:21Oh, I'm just so thrilled to be thrilled, you know, you could come in.
- 2:24I'm so glad we're meeting each other face to face.
- 2:26I know because we've known each Other for a little while.
- 2:29And, you know, I'm always keeping up with you, so you're doing so many great things.
- 2:33Congratulations on a hundred thousand followers on Instagram.
- 2:37So much.
- 2:38Thank you.
- 2:38What a great accomplishment.
- 2:39I appreciate that.
- 2:40Thank you.
- 2:41Absolutely.
- 2:41I know you were celebrating.
- 2:43That looked really fun.
- 2:44What did you do?
- 2:45Let's do it.
- 2:46Yeah.
- 2:46You know, I.
- 2:47I've had a million followers on TikTok for.
- 2:49For years.
- 2:50But, you know, the audience on Instagram is just a little different, you know?
- 2:55So when I finally broke through where my content started to break through on Instagram, was super excited.
- 3:02Yeah.
- 3:02So excited.
- 3:03Do you find that you have to put, like, different content up in each.
- 3:05Place, 100 different content.
- 3:07And, you know, most people don't know this about TikTok.
- 3:10Unless you are engaging on the app a lot, they won't show your videos.
- 3:16So, yeah, your video could be the best video, but if you're not engaging on the app, they don't show your videos to anybody.
- 3:22Yeah.
- 3:23Instagram's not like that.
- 3:24Wow.
- 3:25That's a fact.
- 3:26Yeah, that's a fun fact.
- 3:27I mean, I did.
- 3:28Because it's so hard to often, like, split your time between all of these.
- 3:32It is channels when you're also working.
- 3:34I have a day job.
- 3:36I'm a creator.
- 3:37Like.
- 3:37Yeah, it's impossible.
- 3:38Yes.
- 3:38And what a crazy day job.
- 3:40I mean, finance.
- 3:41You're an attorney.
- 3:42You've got, like, many things going.
- 3:44So how do you keep it all straight?
- 3:46Yeah, it's really hard, especially now, because I'm building a whole new platform.
- 3:52It's called get your 50.
- 3:53And what it is, it's helping married women protect themselves financially in their marriage.
- 3:58And it.
- 3:59It doesn't mean take half of what he has.
- 4:01Okay.
- 4:01It just means that if something were to happen to him tomorrow, you don't want to end up on the street.
- 4:06So I'm developing this and, you know, like, building out a whole platform and brand is so time consuming.
- 4:12So I have my finance job during the day, and then I have to create content and then after, I'm doing a podcast, so I have to build that out.
- 4:20So it's really, really hard, especially now that we're older.
- 4:24You know, like when I was in my 20s, like this.
- 4:27Right.
- 4:28Didn't matter.
- 4:29I'm gonna be 55 next week.
- 4:31And happy early birthday.
- 4:32Thank you.
- 4:33Thank you.
- 4:33But, yeah, you feel it.
- 4:35You feel it in midlife.
- 4:36You do, you know, and it felt like also I felt like in my 20s, I felt like tiny time was just like, like abundant.
- 4:42Like, it's always there, you know, like, there's always more time.
- 4:45Always more time.
- 4:46Now I feel like time is becoming more limited.
- 4:49It's much more valuable than it ever was before.
- 4:51Do you feel that too?
- 4:52Absolutely, yes.
- 4:54I.
- 4:54I feel like, you know, time is just.
- 4:57It is something that is so valuable because I pay attention to it.
- 5:01You know, when you're in your 20s, you're just like, all over the place.
- 5:04But now I'm like, okay, I have this amount of time and I wanna spend it with people I love, with things that I love doing and things that make me happy.
- 5:12Yes, absolutely.
- 5:13And, you know, I think I know somebody who you don't wanna spend it with.
- 5:17Broke dudes.
- 5:17Yes, broke dudes.
- 5:19Yes, broke dudes.
- 5:20Which is so amazing because if anybody follows Patty on social media, you know what I am talking about.
- 5:26Yeah.
- 5:27I think it's so great.
- 5:28Your book, you know, never date a broke dude.
- 5:31I mean, talk about putting it out there and just, you know, like, the way you explain it to makes so much sense.
- 5:38But for those who might not know your definition of broke.
- 5:41Yeah.
- 5:41Can you tell everybody that's listening and watching what broke means to you?
- 5:46Yes.
- 5:47Broke has very little to do with what's in your pocket or your bank account.
- 5:50Okay.
- 5:50Broke is a mentality.
- 5:52So when I say never date a broke dude, and it's not necessarily even a man, but it is someone that doesn't meet your ambition, drive, or work ethic.
- 6:01That's what broke means.
- 6:02So you don't want to be with someone that has a broke mentality?
- 6:04Because I've known men that have more money than God and have been broke.
- 6:07Broke mentality meaning being cheap.
- 6:09Right.
- 6:10Or spending, spending, spending and not having any money left at the end of the month and waiting for their next paycheck.
- 6:16So it's really about your mindset.
- 6:19So do you think that we are measuring wealth the wrong way in our culture, like in the society and the world?
- 6:26Absolutely, I think.
- 6:27Yeah.
- 6:28And I think that we need to really talk about the mentality of a wealth person, wealthy person, versus a person who makes a lot of money.
- 6:37Because do you know that I think it's.
- 6:3963% of all millionaires have never made over $100,000 a year.
- 6:44Yes.
- 6:44Really?
- 6:45Yes.
- 6:45They've gotten there because they invested and they watch what they spent.
- 6:50They weren't buying Ferraris, they weren't buying Lamborghinis.
- 6:53So those are the true wealthy people.
- 6:55Those are the people that aren't broken.
- 6:57The people that.
- 6:58I'm telling you, my finance job When I see someone pull up in a Lamborghini or Ferrari, I automatically know they don't have any money.
- 7:05Automatically, yes.
- 7:06Yes.
- 7:07The guy that I have a client who's worth $3 billion with a B, he pulls up in a Honda Civic.
- 7:13He's wearing flip flops, shorts, and a T shirt.
- 7:17You would never know.
- 7:18You would.
- 7:18How did he make his money?
- 7:20Well, he started.
- 7:21He started investing, and then he started buying investment properties one after the other, and then he started buying commercial real estate, and instead of blow his money on, you know, the cars or the watches, he reinvested it in
- 7:33properties, and now he's worth $3 billion.
- 7:35Wait, that's amazing.
- 7:36So people, are they leveraging what they have to be able to continue, like, scale up like that?
- 7:41They do, they do.
- 7:43But you also need to have down payment money.
- 7:45Right.
- 7:46So.
- 7:47And that's where he had his down payment money instead of.
- 7:49He had plenty of money.
- 7:50He could have blown it on something else, but he just kept all of it so he could keep having down payments for the next property and for the next property.
- 7:57Yeah.
- 7:58So interesting.
- 7:59It's like everybody has their own path to wealth, you know, once they get there.
- 8:04Right.
- 8:04I love hearing all these stories.
- 8:07What do you think it changed for us?
- 8:09Because maybe, perhaps like before things became, you know, all over social media and, you know, talk.
- 8:15The talk about the looking wealthy, you know, looking wealthy is different than building.
- 8:20Oh, my goodness.
- 8:21Yes.
- 8:22So where did we go wrong in that?
- 8:23Like, why is it that, you know, it's.
- 8:26It's almost more important to look wealthy to.
- 8:28To actually have it?
- 8:29Yes.
- 8:30Let me tell you, on social media, the people that look wealthy are typically the brokers people.
- 8:35Let's look at the housewives, for example.
- 8:36You know, I do a lot of housewives content.
- 8:38Please bring it.
- 8:40Yes.
- 8:40The housewives, for example, they all act like they're so wealthy and they don't have a pot to piss in.
- 8:46And the second that they lose a job or the second that they miss a paycheck, that's it.
- 8:51They have to file bankruptcy.
- 8:52And it's happened so many times.
- 8:54I mean, Kim Zolciak, Nene Leakes.
- 8:56So many of these housewives.
- 8:58Dorit recently, right?
- 9:00Yeah.
- 9:00Dorit crazy.
- 9:01Like, she makes a million dollars a year and she can't pay her mortgage.
- 9:06Yeah.
- 9:06How does.
- 9:07How do you.
- 9:07What do you think went wrong there?
- 9:09I think what went wrong is Dorit is delusional and that she doesn't understand that you can't rely on somebody else to pay your mortgage because she Kept saying, PK said that he is going to pay it.
- 9:20Well, if PK's not paying it and the house is in your name, the mortgage is in your name.
- 9:26That's your credit on the line.
- 9:27You are responsible.
- 9:29If you didn't intend on paying that you should have never ever put it in your name.
- 9:34Have it put in his name.
- 9:35They didn't want to do that because I think he had like credit problems or something like that.
- 9:39But still.
- 9:39And she knew that the house was in foreclosure.
- 9:42She kept saying that.
- 9:43I didn't know.
- 9:44I didn't know if the house is in your name.
- 9:46Trust me.
- 9:46They hunt you down.
- 9:48They tell you your house is not, you're not making payments.
- 9:51We're foreclosing on your home.
- 9:53So she knew and she didn't care.
- 9:55There.
- 9:55Yeah.
- 9:56That, that to me is kind of crazy because I would think that that would give me so much anxiety.
- 10:01Right.
- 10:01Like heart palpitations, you know, like how do you still go on and shop and do everything else?
- 10:08Just, just a few weeks ago she was on a three week European vacation.
- 10:13Yeah.
- 10:14That's so irresponsible.
- 10:16That is so irresponsible.
- 10:17And that's why she's.
- 10:18She's going to end up on the street, I'm telling you, eventually.
- 10:20Do you think so?
- 10:21Yes.
- 10:22She will not be able to sustain this because her mentality is a broke person's mental mentality.
- 10:26She's.
- 10:26Yeah.
- 10:27She spends everything she makes and everything.
- 10:30If you've seen her, it's like everything has a label on it.
- 10:33Come on.
- 10:34Like, you know, I'm sure you have friends that are very wealthy and I have friends that are very wealthy.
- 10:40I have friends that are billionaires and they never wear a label.
- 10:43They never talk about the stuff that they have.
- 10:46You know, they never talk about my private jet or my Birkin, whatever.
- 10:50And Dorit's all about the labels.
- 10:52And that's a broke person's mentality.
- 10:53And it's tacky.
- 10:54Yeah, it's.
- 10:55It's so tacky.
- 10:56When you think, think too with children involved that you would want to look out for what?
- 11:01Right.
- 11:01You know, and that's what I'm saying.
- 11:03She has two kids.
- 11:04Like their house, their.
- 11:06The roof over their head is so important when it comes to your children.
- 11:10That should be your first priority.
- 11:12Right.
- 11:12Not going on three week trips to Europe.
- 11:15Right.
- 11:16You know, you have to start paying off your house.
- 11:17And she just refused.
- 11:19So crazy.
- 11:19Yeah.
- 11:20Well, do you think it would have made a difference?
- 11:22I don't, I don't Know who name is on the deed of the house, but it is just hers.
- 11:26Would it have made a difference if he was also on the deed, do you think?
- 11:29As far as.
- 11:30Well, no, because the mortgage indeed are different.
- 11:34So whoever's on the mortgage, who signed for the mortgage, that is the person that's responsible for the.
- 11:39She's the only one on the mortgage, too?
- 11:41Yes.
- 11:42Oh, I thought it was just.
- 11:43No, no, no.
- 11:44She heard the house is in her name, in the deed and the mortgage.
- 11:47Both are just in her.
- 11:48Yes.
- 11:49Oh, my God.
- 11:50Yes.
- 11:50He doesn't have any responsibility to pay.
- 11:52The only reason he's paying that right now is so his kids don't end up on the street.
- 11:57Oh, my God.
- 11:58Yes.
- 11:59Oh, wow.
- 11:59And he.
- 12:00And he asked her to move to a smaller home with the kids, and she refused.
- 12:05He said, I'll pay for it.
- 12:07Move to a smaller home.
- 12:08I'll pay for it.
- 12:09And she refused to do it and she refuses to pay for the house.
- 12:12It's like, if that is not delusional and entitled, I don't know what is.
- 12:17While still spending money elsewhere.
- 12:18Yes.
- 12:18Right.
- 12:18I mean, it's just.
- 12:19It's a lot.
- 12:20It's a lot.
- 12:21So let's reverse it.
- 12:23Let's say.
- 12:23Let's say it's a husband and wife.
- 12:25Maybe he's the one that's on the mortgage and the deed of the house and, you know, maintains control over that.
- 12:32But the wife isn't.
- 12:33Should.
- 12:34Let's say she's 10, 15, 20 years into the marriage with kids.
- 12:38Whatever, you know, is happening, should she be worried about that?
- 12:41Oh, absolutely.
- 12:42That's something that so many women get screwed and they don't understand is that they're never on the deeds to the house.
- 12:47And, and a lot of them contribute actually financially to the mortgage.
- 12:51Even if they're not on their mortgage, they contribute financially to the mortgage.
- 12:54Right.
- 12:55And then something happens to him and they don't get the house.
- 12:58They literally get kicked out.
- 13:00So it's so important to make sure that you are on the deed of your own home.
- 13:05That's really important.
- 13:06And you have to be joint tenants in common with Right.
- 13:09Of survivorship.
- 13:11Most people don't know that.
- 13:12They're like, okay, well, I'm on the deed.
- 13:14Well, what does it say on the deed?
- 13:16If you don't have right to survivorship, that means that the house isn't necessarily going to go to you, and that's going to go through probate.
- 13:24And when it goes through probate, you are left to a judge that you don't know.
- 13:29That has unhealed issues.
- 13:31Who's going to decide what you get?
- 13:34And you never want that to happen.
- 13:36Never want that.
- 13:37You need to lock that shit down before something happens, right?
- 13:40Absolutely.
- 13:41Everything, Roxy.
- 13:42Everything.
- 13:42I can't tell you how many people, for example, they work in their husband's business for years.
- 13:48Like Alicia from Housewives of Rhode island, she.
- 13:51Her.
- 13:51Billy's business, she put on tv, Right.
- 13:54She's using her platform to build it.
- 13:56It was her idea to do Pizza Mama.
- 13:58It was all her idea.
- 14:00And she didn't have 1% of ownership interest.
- 14:02Not one.
- 14:05Because she had worked there, maybe even did some, you know, financial.
- 14:09That doesn't matter.
- 14:09So.
- 14:09It doesn't matter.
- 14:10It does not matter.
- 14:11It doesn't matter how much time you put in.
- 14:14Doesn't matter how many hours you put in.
- 14:15What matters is who has ownership interest.
- 14:19Yeah.
- 14:19And if she has no ownership interest, she doesn't get a piece of it.
- 14:23So.
- 14:24Okay, let's say things go awry in a marriage, right?
- 14:27Like.
- 14:27And you just, like, you know, you guys are calling it quits.
- 14:30You don't have the ownership.
- 14:31Is there something you can do either before you file or maybe right after you file that can kind of try to help the situation for you?
- 14:38Yes.
- 14:39So.
- 14:39So you ask, first of all, you ask to be put on the ownership of the business.
- 14:44Right.
- 14:45And the house and all of that.
- 14:46Right.
- 14:47You asked to do that.
- 14:48If he refuses to do that, then you consult a lawyer.
- 14:52Then you consult a lawyer.
- 14:53And you do this before you file.
- 14:55Right.
- 14:56You consult a lawyer.
- 14:57You make sure that you can get stuff in your name before you file for divorce.
- 15:02Okay.
- 15:02Like, you need to have that.
- 15:03Because once you file.
- 15:04That's it.
- 15:05Yeah, once you file.
- 15:06Yeah, it's.
- 15:07It's like once you file, the assets are protected, meaning that he can't just go blow all the money or things like that.
- 15:13But before you file, you have to make sure that you protect yourself so you're not fighting it out.
- 15:18Okay, well, let's say throughout the whole marriage, you know, one person is a breadwinner.
- 15:23Yep.
- 15:24Do you think.
- 15:25And whether that be the man or the woman, you know, whoever that is, do you think it's fair that they have more power and control in the marriage based on that?
- 15:34It depends on what the other person has given up.
- 15:38So let's just say the man is the primary breadwinner.
- 15:42Right.
- 15:42And the woman is not.
- 15:45Now, has she given up her earning potential?
- 15:49Has she given up her job?
- 15:50Is she taking care of the kids?
- 15:52Is she taking care of that?
- 15:52I mean, that's work, right?
- 15:54So in that sense, it should be 100% equal, but it never is because he who controls the gold makes the rules.
- 16:02I always say this, and money is power.
- 16:05Money is just power.
- 16:06And when you're not making and controlling your own money, you don't have ultimate control over your own destiny because he can pull that money away from you at all times.
- 16:16He can dangle that carrot in front of you at all times.
- 16:20Unless you have your own money, you have no options.
- 16:24That's the problem.
- 16:25That's the problem.
- 16:26I know a lot of women especially don't like to approach the topic of money, you know, talking to their husbands and significant others and marriages.
- 16:34But it is important to do so.
- 16:36How should somebody take that step?
- 16:38Like, what do they say?
- 16:39Yeah, I think a lot of women are nervous to ask their husbands for what they deserve.
- 16:43I think we women are like that anyway.
- 16:45You know, what we do is we so quickly give up our financial security because we don't want to make him mad.
- 16:52We don't want to start a fight.
- 16:53We don't want him to feel emasculated.
- 16:55You know, fuck that.
- 16:56You need to protect yourself in your marriage.
- 16:59And you don't need to come at it in a contentious way, right?
- 17:02You simply say, honey, I love you and I trust you, but if something were to happen to you tomorrow, I'm not protected.
- 17:10So can we make sure that I'm protected?
- 17:13Meaning my name is on the deed, or I own part of the business, or you have a life insurance policy.
- 17:19Right.
- 17:19With me as also as the owner of the life insurance policy.
- 17:23Because, Roxy, this is what people don't understand.
- 17:25They think being the beneficiary of the insurance policy is.
- 17:29You're the beneficiary, right?
- 17:31No, no, no.
- 17:32Because being the beneficiary, he can remove you at any given time and the company will not notify you.
- 17:38Or if he lets the insurance policy lapse, you'll never get notified.
- 17:43You'll never know.
- 17:44So you want to actually own the insurance insurance policy on his life and let it be a million, or about 5 million, I would say.
- 17:53And honestly, on a guy in his 40s, right, an insurance policy like that, 20 year term costs between 50 to 100 bucks.
- 18:01It's not a lot.
- 18:02So you sit down and you say, this isn't about you.
- 18:04I love you.
- 18:05I trust you.
- 18:06This is about me feeling protected.
- 18:07In.
- 18:08In our marriage, if something were to happen to you, I want us to keep the house.
- 18:12I want the business.
- 18:12To be ours.
- 18:14So let's sit down and let's figure out what I need to be put on, whether it's the deed or whatever.
- 18:20Do we have an insurance policy?
- 18:21And I go through this.
- 18:22I.
- 18:23I have a whole class where I go through everything that women need to know to protect themselves and make sure all of that happens.
- 18:29When you get the money on someone's life insurance, that money does not go through probate.
- 18:35That does not go to his creditors.
- 18:37His creditors can't touch that, and his will cannot override that.
- 18:41So even if the will says something different, you still get that money.
- 18:45So even if he were to take you out of the will last minute.
- 18:48Absolutely.
- 18:48So you would still get the life insurance.
- 18:50You would still get the life insurance policy.
- 18:52Oh, okay.
- 18:53So that is one thing that the will cannot override.
- 18:55Absolutely.
- 18:56Okay, let's talk trust.
- 18:57Because I know that that is so important too.
- 18:59Like, I know that that's what we're in the process of doing, is putting our house and the trust and just even to make it just easier for our daughter, you know?
- 19:06So how important is that?
- 19:08And just if you could tell people.
- 19:10How the trust is very important because it dictates what happens to the assets when someone passes away.
- 19:16And there's so many things you can do in a trust.
- 19:19For example, I'm giving half my money to my nephew.
- 19:23Okay.
- 19:23But in order for him to get the money, he has to have graduated from college.
- 19:27Right.
- 19:28Be in a master's program, have a job.
- 19:31You're like, check all of these boxes first.
- 19:34So.
- 19:34And that's really important.
- 19:36But the mistake that most people make with trust is that they don't understand that just having a trust is not enough.
- 19:42You have to move assets into the trust.
- 19:45So they'll be like, okay, well, I have a trust.
- 19:47But they've never moved their home into the trust.
- 19:49They've never moved their assets into the trust, their bank accounts.
- 19:53So it doesn't.
- 19:53It doesn't mean anything unless the trust holds assets.
- 19:57Oh, okay.
- 19:58Okay.
- 19:58So it has to physically already be in there.
- 20:01You.
- 20:01Yes.
- 20:01What you do is you open the trust and then you put assets in the trust.
- 20:05Okay.
- 20:05Now, what do you think?
- 20:06I've also been hearing, and I now I'm blanking on the name of the fund that you can start for your kids where you actually employ them.
- 20:14And it's like a yearly, like, amount of money that you put in.
- 20:17Yes, yes, you.
- 20:18You can.
- 20:18There's.
- 20:19There's different ways and different funds for that.
- 20:21But, yes, you can employ your children as, as a.
- 20:25But you have to own a company.
- 20:26Okay.
- 20:26Okay.
- 20:27You can llc.
- 20:28Yeah, you have to have an LLC or an S corp or corporation, whatever.
- 20:32And if you, if you have that, your, your child can be an employee, but they have to do work.
- 20:38Right?
- 20:38They have to work for you.
- 20:40So your wife or your husband can be an employee and you can write that off as a, as a business expense.
- 20:45That's really.
- 20:46And then with that money it just continues, it just continues to grow.
- 20:49Is that okay throughout.
- 20:51And is it taxed if they take it out at some point?
- 20:54It's.
- 20:54Well, it, it goes in a tax free.
- 20:57Again, there's a.
- 20:58Four or five different accounts, so it really depends on which one you choose.
- 21:01Choose.
- 21:02But it goes, it can go in if it, this is the way to think about it.
- 21:06If it goes in tax free, you have to pay taxes when you take it out.
- 21:10If it goes in after tax money, then you don't have to pay taxes.
- 21:14And so for all accounts, you should just think about it that way.
- 21:17It's like if I am paying taxes before I put the money in, then when I take it out, that won't be taxed if I'm not.
- 21:25But a 401k for example.
- 21:27It's pre tax money.
- 21:28Right.
- 21:29If you want to take it out, you will be taxed on it under a certain age.
- 21:32Okay.
- 21:33Okay.
- 21:33So that's kind of the way to think about it.
- 21:35Okay, That's a good way to think about it.
- 21:36Okay, let's go back to the asshole husband.
- 21:38Yes.
- 21:39How do you prevent money from becoming a weapon?
- 21:42You prevent money from becoming a weapon by having your own money.
- 21:46That's really the only way.
- 21:48Okay.
- 21:48And also making sure that you are on the accounts, that you have access to the accounts.
- 21:54But honestly, that doesn't even mean anything.
- 21:56And let me explain to you why.
- 21:58Okay, so I, I had a friend, she was a billionaire, so she thought she was.
- 22:03Okay.
- 22:04She was living in Beverly Hills in this mansion.
- 22:06She had a staff.
- 22:07She thought they were so rich.
- 22:09Her husband was a very famous surgeon.
- 22:11Okay.
- 22:12She never opened the door.
- 22:14You know, she just thought they were rich.
- 22:16So one day her, her housekeeper is sick.
- 22:19She answers the door, someone says, you've been served.
- 22:22She's like, what are you talking about I've been served?
- 22:25She opens it up and she sees that it's, it's default judgments on their home.
- 22:30Her husband had not made, had not made payments for over a year.
- 22:35No mortgage payments.
- 22:36No mortgage payments.
- 22:37She goes to his office that she normally doesn't go into Right.
- 22:41She goes into his office, she sees piles of.
- 22:45Of service.
- 22:47He hadn't paid the credit card, he hadn't paid the car payments.
- 22:50He hadn't paid anything.
- 22:51They were living beyond their means.
- 22:54And she was on the account.
- 22:56She just took money whenever she wanted.
- 22:58But she wasn't paying attention.
- 23:00She wasn't paying attention to what was happening around her.
- 23:03Oh, my God.
- 23:04So now is she financially responsible then, because she's on the account.
- 23:07She's on the account she signed for him.
- 23:09And this is what happens is women will just sign whatever their husband puts in front of them without even asking a damn question.
- 23:17Even Kyle Richards talked.
- 23:19Talks about how, like, Mauricio would put stuff in front of me, not sign it.
- 23:22You know, you have to know what the hell you're signing.
- 23:24Right, Right.
- 23:25So what ended up happening.
- 23:27Happening after she found out is the whole thing blew up.
- 23:30They had to file for bankruptcy.
- 23:32Their house went into foreclosure.
- 23:34He could not get a job at a hospital anymore.
- 23:37Because if you have financial troubles like this, no hospital is gonna.
- 23:41Is gonna hire you.
- 23:42They are living in a two bedroom apartment with their two kids in Van Nuys, and he is moonlighting at one of these urgent cares.
- 23:50You're kidding me.
- 23:52Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
- 23:53Yes, because she wasn't paying attention.
- 23:57You.
- 23:58I always say you have to inspect what you expect.
- 24:01Yes.
- 24:02Okay.
- 24:03You got to pay attention.
- 24:04You have to, on a weekly basis, look at the accounts.
- 24:08How much money do we have in there?
- 24:10What are they doing?
- 24:11Is he pulling out a lot of money?
- 24:13Where's this money going?
- 24:15One of my friends, she.
- 24:17She was married to this really rich guy.
- 24:19I talk about her in the book.
- 24:20She had.
- 24:21She was.
- 24:22Had.
- 24:22She was going through cancer treatment, so she kind of kept her eyes off the.
- 24:25Off the money.
- 24:26And they had so many accounts anyway.
- 24:29Her husband was giving his mistress $12,000.
- 24:32A month while she's going through cancer.
- 24:34Oh, my God.
- 24:36She had no idea.
- 24:38And that's money that could have gone to her kids.
- 24:40Yes.
- 24:41Or treatment.
- 24:42Yeah, whatever.
- 24:43Whatever.
- 24:44Yeah, she's okay.
- 24:45She's okay.
- 24:46Thank goodness she's okay and she survived.
- 24:48She's amazing.
- 24:49But.
- 24:49Yeah.
- 24:50So this is the way money is used as a weapon.
- 24:53As a weapon.
- 24:53Look, going back to Kyle, since we brought that one up, Kyle and Mauricio of the Real Housewives in Beverly Hills, who do you think is gonna.
- 25:00Are they gonna get.
- 25:01Is he gonna get screwed in that divorce?
- 25:03Like, how do you think it's going to work out for the two of them?
- 25:06Like, do you think because they've been married so long, I don't think they have a prenup, right?
- 25:10No, they don't have a prenup.
- 25:11So what's going to happen, do you think, with, like, the firm and.
- 25:15Okay, so if he's above board, okay, she will get half of everything, but that also includes half of the debt.
- 25:23Okay, so the agency has a lot of debt.
- 25:27People.
- 25:28People think that the agency is just blowing up because they're opening so many locations.
- 25:32No, they're doing it on leverage.
- 25:34So the agency has a lot of debt, and with real estate, as far as how it's been, they're not doing that well.
- 25:40So, yeah, she'll get half.
- 25:41But half of.
- 25:42What does that mean?
- 25:43Because she gets half of the debt and.
- 25:47And here's where she's at the biggest danger.
- 25:50And this is the way most women.
- 25:52Most women don't understand.
- 25:54They're separated, but not officially, not legally.
- 25:57Right.
- 25:57They just live apart.
- 25:59In that instance, he can move assets at any given time.
- 26:03He.
- 26:04He can go through all of their money and there's nothing anyone would say about it.
- 26:09Nothing.
- 26:10They can't even go back forensically and try to.
- 26:12Even if they do, it doesn't matter because you're still married unless you file for legal separation.
- 26:19He can move the money and go through all the money without any repercussions?
- 26:24Yes.
- 26:25Okay, so that's why.
- 26:26That's why she's in such a dangerous place.
- 26:28Because if.
- 26:29The second that you file for legal separation, that's when it's like, okay, you can't move money, you can't move assets.
- 26:37We need to know, what do you have now?
- 26:39You can't touch it.
- 26:40You can't sell stuff.
- 26:41You can't.
- 26:41So that way both people are protected.
- 26:44Right?
- 26:45But since she.
- 26:46She's just been willy nilly for the past, I don't know, three something years, Right?
- 26:50Yeah.
- 26:50I mean, he.
- 26:51Yeah, he could be doing that and you would never know.
- 26:53You would never.
- 26:54Oh, my God.
- 26:55And I feel like she kind of.
- 26:56I mean, we don't know what goes on behind closed doors, obviously, but, like, she seems very, like, open to him and they seem to have a good relationship, but you never know what somebody.
- 27:05Oh, my gosh.
- 27:07I mean, you never know.
- 27:09You never know.
- 27:10You think that things are going well.
- 27:12You think that he's not going to screw me.
- 27:14You think people will do crazy shit in times of desperation, especially if his company needs it, especially if something comes up.
- 27:24I mean, this guy has already proved who he is.
- 27:27I mean, he's Seen with a different 20 year old with their legs wrapped around him every other week on the street.
- 27:33I mean, if that's not cringe, I don't know what is.
- 27:37That is so cringy, dude.
- 27:39I mean, come on, you know, so how could you even trust a guy like that?
- 27:42He doesn't even respect himself.
- 27:44He doesn't respect you.
- 27:45How's he going to respect your money?
- 27:46Yeah, that's a good point.
- 27:48That's a good point.
- 27:48Yeah.
- 27:49Kyle, beware.
- 27:50Oh, my gosh.
- 27:51Yes.
- 27:51Okay, well, then you look at somebody like that, you know, that had been married for decades that didn't have a prenup.
- 27:56Should we be talking about that before we get married nowadays?
- 28:00Oh, yeah.
- 28:00Should everybody have a prenup no matter what their valuation, how much money they have?
- 28:05Yes, because a prenup determines how your assets get divided.
- 28:11Okay?
- 28:12That's what a prenup does.
- 28:13It just deter.
- 28:14And you're not leaving it up to a judge.
- 28:16Now, you know, some people will say, well, everyone has a prenup because the state decides the rules.
- 28:22Yes, but it could be for you or against you.
- 28:25Right?
- 28:26Each state is different.
- 28:27You do not want somebody else deciding how your assets are going to be divided.
- 28:33And not to mention, not to mention how much money you are going to put toward lawyers when you're the ones that win, they're the ones that win.
- 28:43When you don't have a prenup.
- 28:44Yes, but when you have a prenup, it's like, okay, this is the way it is.
- 28:49But this is what women should be careful for when it comes to prenups.
- 28:52Okay, this is what screwed Lisa Hochstein.
- 28:55Okay, From.
- 28:56Oh, right, with Lenny.
- 28:58Yes.
- 28:58Tell me this.
- 28:59This is, this is how she got screwed.
- 29:01Okay, so she signed a prenup when he was worth a tenth of what he's worth now.
- 29:08Okay?
- 29:08And the prenup is a static prenup.
- 29:11That means it's based on what he was worth 20 years ago.
- 29:15What you're worth 20 years ago.
- 29:17Like the moment you sign.
- 29:17The moment you sign it.
- 29:18Okay, so it says, if we get divorced, I'll get $1.4 million.
- 29:23I think that was the case with her.
- 29:25Like 1.4 million, something like that.
- 29:26I don't remember.
- 29:27But within those 20 years, his net worth has exponentially increased.
- 29:34Right?
- 29:35He now he's worth $100 million, but your prenup still says 1.4 million.
- 29:42So when they divorced, he's like, f you.
- 29:45Our prenup says you only get $1.4 million.
- 29:47Bitch what are you going to do?
- 29:50So she had to fight that.
- 29:52She had to fight that.
- 29:54And typically you don't win.
- 29:56And she.
- 29:56I mean, she went through hell with Lenny.
- 29:59I mean, she went through hell.
- 30:00But what you want to do is make sure that your prenup is not a static prenup, that it grows when he grows.
- 30:06So you have escalator clauses.
- 30:09Oh.
- 30:09As his net worth increases, so does what I get.
- 30:13Every child I have, I get more money or it expires after a certain amount of time.
- 30:19The prenup has to grow when he grows.
- 30:22If not, you are stuck at the guy maybe working at Burger King.
- 30:26Right.
- 30:27Any money?
- 30:28Didn't have any money at the beginning of his career.
- 30:31Of his career.
- 30:31Now he's worth $100 million.
- 30:33And you're prenups and says you get $100,000.
- 30:35Go fight it.
- 30:36Oh, yeah, that's.
- 30:38That's really important because every.
- 30:40I mean, you think that the trajectory is.
- 30:42You keep making more.
- 30:44No.
- 30:44Wow.
- 30:45Did she.
- 30:46So she didn't get.
- 30:47Did she get what she was doing?
- 30:48She fought it.
- 30:49I don't know exactly how much she got.
- 30:50I think she got more.
- 30:51But one of the reasons she got more is because she was able to show that a.
- 30:55She worked in his office.
- 30:56She helped build that office.
- 30:58Although she didn't have ownership interest.
- 31:00She helped build that office.
- 31:01She put him on tv, right?
- 31:04Yeah, he.
- 31:04I mean, he did.
- 31:05Yeah.
- 31:06He was rich before then, but after he.
- 31:08She put him on tv, he blew up.
- 31:10He was like the boob guy.
- 31:11Exactly.
- 31:12Exactly.
- 31:12Yeah.
- 31:13So she was able to show that because of her contributions to the business, that the business grew.
- 31:19And this is exactly what she was, you know, what she was doing.
- 31:21So I think she got more than, you know, what was in the, in the original prenup.
- 31:25Okay, but.
- 31:26Huh.
- 31:26But that, that was.
- 31:28She just got lucky.
- 31:30What about.
- 31:30Okay, like somebody like Sonia Morgan from the Real Housewives of New York.
- 31:34I've often wondered about how her divorce, you know, settlement panned out because she was living in that townhouse.
- 31:39But it seemed like she was a little cash poor.
- 31:42Like I, you know, what happened?
- 31:43Do you think she got a big settlement?
- 31:45Like.
- 31:45No, I think what happened is that she probably got the townhouse that was worth a lot of money.
- 31:50Right.
- 31:51And.
- 31:52And maybe for a period of time, she may have gotten.
- 31:55I'm sure she signed a prenup.
- 31:56Prenup.
- 31:56I'm sure.
- 31:57I'm sure of it.
- 31:58I don't know.
- 31:58They don't.
- 31:59That's not something that people actually talked about.
- 32:01Right.
- 32:02But I'm sure she signed a prenup, and part of it was that she got the home, which was great.
- 32:06Right, Right.
- 32:06And he probably gave her a certain amount of money every month.
- 32:09But once your children leave, you don't get that child support anymore.
- 32:14So once they turn 18, or is it 21 or 18.
- 32:17Right.
- 32:17You don't get child support anymore.
- 32:19And the reason that child support is given is, is so that the child can have the same living conditions when they live with one parent versus another.
- 32:29Okay, so this is why Halle Berry has to give her dusty husband so much child support, because they want the environment for the child to be similar.
- 32:38So the child doesn't say, I'm living in a mansion one day and I'm living in a one bedroom apartment without air conditioning the next day.
- 32:45Right.
- 32:45But once that is cut off, and then I'm sure that she, she got spousal support for a certain period of time.
- 32:51Right.
- 32:52But after that dies, you got to make your own money.
- 32:55And the court determines how much money you get based on whether you can work.
- 33:00Oh, really?
- 33:01Yes.
- 33:01Yeah, absolutely.
- 33:03So if you're, you're competent and working, they're like, okay, a person your age, your level experience can make X amount of dollars a year.
- 33:11They take that out of what they give you.
- 33:13Oh, wow, I didn't realize that.
- 33:16So they're only paying the difference, really,.
- 33:17Of what they think of your income potential.
- 33:20Yes.
- 33:20They're like, what is your income potential?
- 33:22Okay.
- 33:23And whatever that is, they take that money out of the spousal support that, that you would get.
- 33:28Oh, that's important to know, too, because a lot of women, especially, you know, maybe they quit working to raise kids.
- 33:34Right.
- 33:35You know, and they're dedicating 20 years to this whole process.
- 33:39And then, you know, they end up getting divorced.
- 33:41And here they are trying to find a job, and they have no skills.
- 33:45Yeah.
- 33:45And they have no skills.
- 33:46Yeah, no, no.
- 33:47No credit history.
- 33:48Typically that.
- 33:49They typically have no credit history.
- 33:51So they can't even rent an apartment.
- 33:52They can't even get a credit card.
- 33:54They can't even get a car.
- 33:55They can't even literally get a cell phone because they don't have credit history.
- 33:58And if they do, they have to pay cash for it.
- 34:00Right.
- 34:01So no skills, no job, no money, no credit history.
- 34:05Now what?
- 34:06Now what?
- 34:06Now what are you going to do?
- 34:07Yeah, what do.
- 34:08Okay, what do you say to a woman in that case?
- 34:10In that case, then this is why I tell women they need to protect themselves.
- 34:15You have to make sure that you're building your credit.
- 34:17Right.
- 34:18While you're in this marriage.
- 34:19So you need to have a credit card and your name only.
- 34:22And not his credit card.
- 34:24Okay?
- 34:24Not the shared.
- 34:25Like, not the shared.
- 34:26Because what could happen is he could have a credit card and name you as an authorized user.
- 34:32Okay, but that doesn't mean that you're building credit if you're an authorized user.
- 34:35You're not responsible for it either, by the way.
- 34:37Oh, he would always be.
- 34:38Yeah, he would always be responsible for it.
- 34:41But you're an authorized user, so you're not building credit.
- 34:43So you need to have a credit card in your own name that you use once in a while.
- 34:49You buy $20 here and there.
- 34:50Nothing big.
- 34:51You don't.
- 34:51It's something you're going to pay off at the end of the month.
- 34:53Just so you're building credit.
- 34:55You need to have an account in your own name at a separate bank that you guys have your other accounts.
- 35:01Because if it's at the same bank, it shows up on the dashboard.
- 35:04Oh, so it could be.
- 35:06Oh, so you need 100% separate.
- 35:08100% separate.
- 35:09You only have the password.
- 35:10You don't put that password in the shared icloud and the shared password manager.
- 35:16You have a separate account in your own name at a separate bank that only you have access to, and you fund that every single month.
- 35:22Now people are like, well, I'm a stay at home mom.
- 35:24How do I do that?
- 35:25You are on your phone constantly going through social media.
- 35:28Sell one thing, sell your clothes, go on poshmark.
- 35:33Start selling that bike in the garage that no one ever uses.
- 35:37You know, start selling your stuff and you start building little by little by little.
- 35:42So you're saying it doesn't matter how much?
- 35:43It doesn't matter.
- 35:45Just so it doesn't matter.
- 35:46Just so you have something.
- 35:47And I call that fuck you money.
- 35:50Every woman should have fuck you money.
- 35:52And that is money.
- 35:53That is six months of living expenses in case something happens.
- 35:58And that necessarily doesn't mean in case you get a divorce.
- 36:01That necessarily doesn't mean in case he screws you.
- 36:04It means what if he falls over and dies?
- 36:07And you at that, at that very moment.
- 36:10Right.
- 36:11You may not have access to the accounts.
- 36:12You may not, or he may not have any money.
- 36:15Right.
- 36:15Not everyone has.
- 36:16I mean, very few people are set after their.
- 36:19Their husband dies.
- 36:21Very few women.
- 36:23Right, right.
- 36:24No matter what they're worth.
- 36:26Yeah.
- 36:26No matter what.
- 36:27Yeah.
- 36:27So that money is money that's going to support you and your kids for six months While you can figure out everything else, that's what that money is.
- 36:35So you need that buffer for absolutely 100%.
- 36:39Yes.
- 36:40Oh, my God.
- 36:41I'm like, ah, I gotta get all this liquid.
- 36:44Like, liquid.
- 36:45Yeah.
- 36:45Ready to go.
- 36:46It has to be.
- 36:47And you just put it in a high yield savings account so you're not earning zero.
- 36:51And there's a lot of Internet banks that will pay you 4 to 5%.
- 36:54Great.
- 36:55You know, just do a little research on Google.
- 36:57Okay.
- 36:58Who pays the highest interest rates?
- 37:00Just put it there and you just start building and you start building little by little.
- 37:04You can even do data entry on your laptop from your sofa and make money.
- 37:08There's so many side hustles you can get right now.
- 37:10Yeah.
- 37:10I mean, Uber.
- 37:11Uber eats.
- 37:13You make your own hours, like everything, right?
- 37:15Yeah.
- 37:15One of my friends, let me tell you, he makes $200 a day because he commutes to work.
- 37:22So he picks up someone from his house and it's a long commute.
- 37:26Commutes to work, makes $100 on his way to work, makes $100 back.
- 37:31You're kidding.
- 37:32$200 a day he makes.
- 37:34Right?
- 37:34That's.
- 37:35That's $1,000 a week.
- 37:37Oh, my God, that's like easy money right there.
- 37:39$4,000.
- 37:40And guess what?
- 37:41He doesn't need it.
- 37:42He's just like, why not?
- 37:44He's like, that money.
- 37:45He's like, I invest.
- 37:46Do you know I make 15% on that money?
- 37:49Oh, my God.
- 37:50That's.
- 37:50That's actually really smart.
- 37:52He's not disrupting what he would normally do.
- 37:54Nothing.
- 37:55It's just.
- 37:55He's going that direction.
- 37:57He picks up a ride that's direction and a ride that wants to go to this direction.
- 38:03That's so easy.
- 38:03And you're right.
- 38:04There's so many things you can do.
- 38:05There's the poshmark.
- 38:06There's like.
- 38:07Yeah.
- 38:07You know, the real, real.
- 38:08You can sell back your old stuff.
- 38:10Uber eats.
- 38:11Uber, like just.
- 38:12There are little things you can do and you can plug it into your own.
- 38:15Yes.
- 38:16Schedule.
- 38:16Yes.
- 38:17I mean, God forbid something happens, you know, because you can't tell.
- 38:20I mean, you have no idea.
- 38:21No.
- 38:21You have no idea.
- 38:22Right?
- 38:23I sit across from hundreds of women that are shocked that their husband all of a sudden dies.
- 38:30I mean, again, not even.
- 38:31We're not talking about fidelity.
- 38:33We're just talking about, like, unexpected deaths,.
- 38:35Like a drop dead of a heart attack.
- 38:37They have no idea what a password is.
- 38:40They don't know where one account is.
- 38:43They don't know who owns the House.
- 38:44They don't.
- 38:45None of that.
- 38:46None of that.
- 38:47Oh, my God.
- 38:48What do they have to do?
- 38:49Do they just have to start, like, do they contact.
- 38:52They contact an attorney, and then attorney is like, okay, let's figure all this out.
- 38:56And then you have the inf.
- 38:58Of the kids, and then the other relatives don't want to come in because they have no idea.
- 39:02Like, okay, is there a will?
- 39:04Is there a trust?
- 39:05Who gets what?
- 39:06Nothing.
- 39:06Nothing.
- 39:07Oh, my God.
- 39:08Okay, let's talk a little bit about leveraging, too, because I've been seeing a lot of this on social media where people.
- 39:14People are saying, leverage your own assets to gain more wealth.
- 39:18Yeah.
- 39:18So how do we do that?
- 39:20First of all, you know, let's say we own a home.
- 39:21Let's say we've got some investments.
- 39:23You know, how do we go about leveraging things to, you know, to build the world?
- 39:28Yeah, I.
- 39:29I normally do not recommend that.
- 39:31Okay.
- 39:31Okay.
- 39:31I normally do not recommend that because you're always borrowing against something.
- 39:35Okay.
- 39:36And what happens is that unless you already have a lot of money.
- 39:40And this is why social media just gives the worst advice to people.
- 39:44Because.
- 39:44Because they say leverage.
- 39:46Leverage.
- 39:48Because if you're overly leveraged, for example, so you're always borrowing against something.
- 39:53Right.
- 39:53So, for example, this.
- 39:54This way, it works.
- 39:55You have your home, okay.
- 39:56And you want to buy an investment property, so you leverage your home to buy that investment property.
- 40:03Okay.
- 40:03So now all the equity is out of your home.
- 40:06Oh, it's now.
- 40:07Yeah.
- 40:08Oh, And.
- 40:10And there's a lien against your house.
- 40:13Okay.
- 40:13Okay.
- 40:14So you're already on thin ice right there with your home.
- 40:17Yeah.
- 40:17God forbid that investment property not work out.
- 40:22Now you got to pay the mortgage for that property and the mortgage for your property.
- 40:27Okay, now what?
- 40:29Now what?
- 40:30Right.
- 40:30Sticky.
- 40:31So that's sticky.
- 40:32Or you have investment accounts.
- 40:33Yes.
- 40:34Could you borrow against your investment account?
- 40:36Sure.
- 40:37But most people are not seasoned investors.
- 40:41Most people are not these money managers, Right.
- 40:45They don't know what's going on, so they borrow against the investment account.
- 40:48Okay.
- 40:48They put that in a business that fails, for example, and then now they have to pay off that loan.
- 40:54They borrowed against the investment account.
- 40:56So the money that could be compounding year to year that you could be making is gone.
- 41:01So you're even in a worse situation.
- 41:04So they're like, be smart.
- 41:06This is how the rich people do it.
- 41:07Yeah.
- 41:07Did you hear that?
- 41:08The guy who wrote Rich Dad, Poor Dad.
- 41:11I remember that book.
- 41:13He is bankrupt.
- 41:14You're kidding.
- 41:14No, it just came out that this dude who was telling everybody, rich dad, poor dad, leverage, everything, whatever.
- 41:22Yeah.
- 41:22Is like millions and millions and dollars in debt and can't get out of it.
- 41:27Did he just over leverage himself?
- 41:28Is that he over leveraged?
- 41:30Wow.
- 41:31Okay.
- 41:32Over leveraged.
- 41:32You gotta be smart.
- 41:34Now, there are some exceptions to this rule, right?
- 41:39You're never gonna be the exception.
- 41:41I'm sorry that, you know, like, I value my money way too much to count on an exception.
- 41:48You know, anytime that I've played with my money the way I wasn't supposed to, I've lost.
- 41:54And I'm in finance.
- 41:55Yeah, exactly.
- 41:56You're like, I know this.
- 41:57Yeah, yeah.
- 41:58So where should we be putting our money right now, okay?
- 42:00If we're a midlife woman, like, what is smart for us?
- 42:03What you need to do is you need to open an investment account, okay?
- 42:06At Fidelity or Schwab.
- 42:08It's a free account, and I say, I'm not partnering with those people.
- 42:11I'm.
- 42:11Those are just solid places, okay?
- 42:14You need to open investment account, and you need to start funding it every single month.
- 42:20You need to set up an automatic transfer from your checking account to go to your investment account.
- 42:25And that investment account should be buying ETFs and index funds.
- 42:30ETFs and index funds are a pool of funds, okay?
- 42:34They're a pool, which means that you're automatically diversified because that's the key to investing diversification.
- 42:41Right?
- 42:42Diversification and time.
- 42:44So, so Easy Google the ETFs or index funds that have the best track record for the past 10 years, whatever those are, you set it up that you buy some of those every single month, okay?
- 43:02And people.
- 43:03And I want to explain this to people, because sometimes they.
- 43:05That share, One share is $200.
- 43:07You're like, I can't afford $200 a month.
- 43:09That's okay.
- 43:10Fidelity and Schwab, or whatever platform you're on, make sure that they allow you to buy fractional shares.
- 43:16Because then you're like, okay, I can't buy a share a month, but guess what?
- 43:21I can buy a quarter of a share.
- 43:23And you set it and you forget it.
- 43:26You don't touch that money until you retire.
- 43:30But I always want to say this.
- 43:33You never put money in an investment account that you can't let sit for at least 10 years, okay?
- 43:39Because 10 years is what it takes to beat the cyclical nature of the stock market.
- 43:46Mean, bull bear, like, up and down.
- 43:48The stock market is going to go up and down.
- 43:49Eventually it's going to go up.
- 43:52And historically, if you're in the stock market for 15 years, historically, your chances of losing your money is zero.
- 43:59Okay, so it's a time game.
- 44:02If you don't need it for 10 years, that's when you start investing.
- 44:06And you need to start investing.
- 44:08That's the way you build wealth.
- 44:10That's a good.
- 44:11That's a good point.
- 44:12Just let it go.
- 44:13Don't you.
- 44:14No.
- 44:14Do not buy.
- 44:15Yes.
- 44:15Do not sell.
- 44:16Yes.
- 44:17Don't do that.
- 44:18Because they're like, oh, it's going down.
- 44:19You should probably sell.
- 44:20And, like, you shouldn't do that.
- 44:21No.
- 44:21That is the worst thing you can do.
- 44:23Every study shows.
- 44:24Every study shows that people who actually have access to information about the ups and downs of the stock market do exponentially worse than people who don't have access.
- 44:34Because people that don't have access don't touch it.
- 44:37Yeah.
- 44:37I have never touched my investment account.
- 44:41Through the bear market, through the bull market, never.
- 44:44Consistent, consistent, consistent, consistent investing.
- 44:48Isn't that interesting.
- 44:49I know.
- 44:49It's like.
- 44:51In fact, a lot of times people say, buy when it's down.
- 44:54You know what?
- 44:54You should.
- 44:55You should actually buy when it's down.
- 44:57There's a saying that says you buy when there's blood on the street, even if the blood is yours.
- 45:02So, yeah.
- 45:03So when it's down, isn't that interesting?
- 45:04That's when you buy.
- 45:06It's actually the absolute reverse.
- 45:08People think, when it's down, you should sell.
- 45:10No, when it's down, you should buy.
- 45:12Yeah, you should buy.
- 45:13That's the time.
- 45:13Exactly.
- 45:14That's the time.
- 45:15Yeah.
- 45:15Okay, so what do you think about Bitcoin?
- 45:18So I have a position in bitcoin.
- 45:20Okay.
- 45:20You do?
- 45:21Yes.
- 45:21But that should not be your core investment strategy.
- 45:25That's like something on the side.
- 45:27Yeah.
- 45:28Let me tell you.
- 45:28Let me tell you what I did, Roxy.
- 45:30About eight years ago, nine years ago, I put $5,000 in Bitcoin because I was like, that is $5,000 I am willing to lose.
- 45:38Right.
- 45:39You're willing to part.
- 45:40I am willing to part with the $5,000.
- 45:42If it goes to zero, it's not going to affect my overall investment picture.
- 45:46Right.
- 45:48So those could be side.
- 45:50Side things.
- 45:51Or for example, I have.
- 45:53I have all ETFs and index funds except a few things.
- 45:56Like I have a position in Tesla.
- 45:58I also have a position in Planeteer.
- 46:01I have a position in this other.
- 46:04It's called Enphase.
- 46:07But again, those are three or four positions.
- 46:09Those are side positions.
- 46:10That is not my main core portfolio.
- 46:13And that's the way it should be for all crypto, anything that's not an ETF or index fund, that should be money that, okay, if I lose it, I'll be okay with it.
- 46:22So that you can just, if you're.
- 46:24Okay with, think of this, anything, any one stock can go to zero at any given time.
- 46:31Tesla was about to go bankrupt.
- 46:33Tesla, right?
- 46:34Right.
- 46:34When everyone's putting their money in.
- 46:36Yeah.
- 46:36Tesla was about to go 30 days from bankruptcy.
- 46:40If an iPhone started blowing up in people's faces, Apple stock plummet.
- 46:45So if Apple stock, for example, everyone says, buy Apple, buy Apple.
- 46:49If iPhones started exploding people's faces, Apple stock would plummet.
- 46:52If you found Jeff Bezos was funneling money, Amazon stock would plummet.
- 46:57Right.
- 46:58So that's why you don't want individual stocks as your core portfolio.
- 47:01Okay, what about AI though?
- 47:03What about AI stocks?
- 47:04Like anthropic and like all those other.
- 47:06Yeah, I, those are still too risky for me.
- 47:08Okay, so you're not investing in that yet.
- 47:10I, I have not invested in any AI stocks.
- 47:13So, like, waiting to see.
- 47:15Waiting to see.
- 47:16I, I, I do not want to lose my money.
- 47:19I don't want to lose my money.
- 47:20And I'm telling you, every time I have got.
- 47:23There was a time I'll tell you the story so people can learn from the story.
- 47:27I had about a hundred and fifty thousand dollars to put down on a piece of property I was going to buy.
- 47:32I had it in my, in my savings account.
- 47:34I was getting 5% on it.
- 47:36Okay.
- 47:37And I was like, well, there was a delay.
- 47:40I'm like, okay, Well I have three months from the time it's delayed three months.
- 47:43So I'm not just going to get 5%.
- 47:45Let me put it in the stock market.
- 47:46Stock market was booming during that time.
- 47:48Let me put it in.
- 47:49I'm going to make 15% on it.
- 47:51Okay.
- 47:52I'll take it out in three months.
- 47:54The first two months.
- 47:55Great, great.
- 47:56The last month, the month I was taking it out, the stock market plummeted.
- 48:01I lost.
- 48:01Yes.
- 48:02I lost thousands and thousands of dollars.
- 48:05Yes.
- 48:06Because you never know.
- 48:07Yeah, you never know.
- 48:08You can't.
- 48:09There's an investment strategy that works and short term investing is not it.
- 48:14I didn't have 10 years.
- 48:15Right.
- 48:15That money I put in the stock market is not 10 year money.
- 48:18It's money I needed in three months.
- 48:20That's why you keep it in a savings account.
- 48:22You don't put it in the stock market.
- 48:26I know.
- 48:27And we're at this point in life right now where we're kind of in the midway point, you know, so it's like, where do we put our money?
- 48:33And it's like really, you know, you're thinking for the future.
- 48:35You're thinking for, you know, maybe future generations for your, you know, well being.
- 48:40Absolutely.
- 48:41So this is all really good to know.
- 48:42Okay, what are the three biggest tips you want every midlife woman to know about money?
- 48:47Okay, the first tip is that you are better with money than your husband.
- 48:54That's the first tip.
- 48:55Because most middle aged women do not have the confidence to start investing, to start putting money, money away.
- 49:00But women have been proven to be better investors.
- 49:03Okay, so that's my first tip.
- 49:05Second tip is know what's going on in your family about finances.
- 49:10Know everything.
- 49:11Okay.
- 49:12Inspect what you expect, know how many accounts you have, what the estate plan is, where's the will, what are the passwords?
- 49:20In my book, I, I list like all.
- 49:22I have like a checklist of everything women need to know.
- 49:25No.
- 49:25Okay, that's, that's the second one.
- 49:27And third, you need to start figuring out how much money you need for retirement.
- 49:33Okay, how do we calculate that?
- 49:35Okay.
- 49:35Okay, so this is where AI comes in handy.
- 49:38Okay?
- 49:39Use AI.
- 49:40Tell them how much money you make right now, what your expenses are right now, okay?
- 49:47And then it will tell you, because at retirement everyone thinks you're going to be going on all these vacations and stuff.
- 49:53You're not.
- 49:54You need about 80% of what your living expenses are.
- 49:57Right.
- 49:58But everyone's different.
- 49:59You may want to do that, I don't know, but AI will help you through that.
- 50:03And then it, and then it will tell you how much money you need for your retirement.
- 50:07And then it will tell you, then you, then you say, if I'm investing this money at 10%, that's average because the stock market gives you between 8 to 12%.
- 50:19Okay.
- 50:20At a 10% return.
- 50:21If I invest this money for however many years you have to retirement.
- 50:25So if you're 40, retirement is a 20.
- 50:28At 65, you have 25 years.
- 50:30Right?
- 50:30However many years you have.
- 50:32How much do I need to start investing today?
- 50:35And I will tell you exactly.
- 50:37It's a formula.
- 50:37It's a formula, okay?
- 50:39It's based on what you already, how.
- 50:40You live, how you live now, how you want to live later.
- 50:43Like some people are like, I'm going to sell everything.
- 50:45I'm going to live in a one bedroom.
- 50:46Okay?
- 50:47That situation is going to be much different than someone who is going to want to keep their house.
- 50:51Right?
- 50:52So you just Tell AI what you want to do, how much money you need, how much money you have now, how much money you're spending now.
- 50:58It will tell you exactly how much you need to invest every single month.
- 51:02Okay, that's, that's a really good tool.
- 51:03Yeah.
- 51:04I saw thing Kevin o' Leary on social media.
- 51:06He said in order to just be set, he actually gave a number.
- 51:11And I want to know what you think of this number.
- 51:12He said 5 million is where you are like worry free basically for the rest of your life.
- 51:20What do you think about that?
- 51:21He says that, but that's $5 million in cash.
- 51:25Okay.
- 51:26Not a lot of people are ever going to have liquid, liquid $5 million.
- 51:31So he says that everyone's like, oh my God, what great advice.
- 51:35Well, I help.
- 51:37Yeah.
- 51:37You think assets, right?
- 51:38Right.
- 51:39No, it's $5 million in cash.
- 51:44Right.
- 51:45Then what if you have $5 million in cash, you're probably earning some, you know, interest on that money, so you have enough to live and get by.
- 51:53But even at 5 million, you're not living extravagantly.
- 51:58You're living a good life.
- 52:00Very middle class, intermediate life.
- 52:03But yeah, to have $5 million in cash, most people are not, you know, middle class people.
- 52:10Yes.
- 52:10It just does.
- 52:12You know, I call it these finance bros that just like, you know, give this advice and people don't think through what that actually means.
- 52:20Right, right.
- 52:20You have to really, like sit down and analyze that and like hear what he's saying.
- 52:24Yes, exactly.
- 52:25It's true.
- 52:26Okay, Ms.
- 52:26Patty, how are you living iconically right now?
- 52:29I am living iconically by starting my new platform.
- 52:32Get your 50.
- 52:33Like I said, where I am helping middle aged women protect themselves financially in their marriage because they're going to get screwed.
- 52:40And this is what it's all about.
- 52:42Yes.
- 52:42100.
- 52:43Can everybody find you?
- 52:44Where can they?
- 52:45I mean, I love your social media.
- 52:46Thank you.
- 52:47Thank you.
- 52:47Obviously there too.
- 52:48Thank you.
- 52:49Yes.
- 52:49So you can find me at Duchess of Decorum.
- 52:52It's my handle on Tick tock and instagram or patty aside.com.
- 52:55That's my website.
- 52:56You'll find all my courses there.
- 52:57Everything that I'm doing, it's all there.
- 52:59Guys, go check her out because she has the best financial advice.
- 53:03Plus she's hilarious and she always relates it back to pop culture, which I love.
- 53:07So I'm always like, oh my God, who's she talking about today?
- 53:10Yeah.
- 53:11So good.
- 53:12Thank you so much, Patty, for joining me.
- 53:13I got to be honored.
- 53:14Thank you for having me.
- 53:15This is awesome, Patty.
- 53:16You make talking about money a lot more fun than it has any right to be.
- 53:21But beneath all of it, I think there's something really important here.
- 53:25Financial independence isn't simply about how much money you make.
- 53:28It's about agency.
- 53:29It's about options, and it's about never having to stay in a job, a relationship or a life simply because you can't afford to leave it.
- 53:36And if you love this conversation, follow the iconic midlife wherever you listen to podcasts, subscribe on YouTube and follow me on social media heconicmedlife and redcorpetroxy so you don't miss what's coming next and come back Thursday because Patti
- 53:51is sticking around for a game of rich move or broke move.
- 53:55And I've deliberately made these scenarios so complicated that even the Duchess of Decorum may have trouble picking a side.
- 54:03And to everyone watching and listening, getting older is inevitable.
- 54:07But becoming iconic is a choice.
- 54:09I'll see you next time on the Iconic Medlife.
