- 0:18Speaker 1: Taking a live look at OTA number four here on
- 0:21Speaker 1: the field outside the Miller Electric Center in Jacksonville. Will
- 0:24Speaker 1: be checking in throughout the day as organized team activities
- 0:28Speaker 1: get started. We're going to do our own version of
- 0:30Speaker 1: OTAs here on jag VAM. I'm Kadannie Stevens, Brian Sexton
- 0:34Speaker 1: and John Oser are with me. Let's start up with
- 0:36Speaker 1: the owen.
- 0:36Speaker 2: OTA's offense is.
- 0:38Speaker 1: What we're going to be talking about. We've discussed the
- 0:40Speaker 1: offense of all off season and how important it is
- 0:43Speaker 1: for them to come out to a strong start.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Head coach Doug.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Peterson talked this morning about the importance of Trevor Lawrence
- 0:49Speaker 1: becoming more of a leader.
- 0:51Speaker 3: It's kind of all of it. Decision making, balls coming
- 0:54Speaker 3: out of his hand, faster, quicker decisions, you know, all
- 0:56Speaker 3: that part of it, Accuracy, the timing things that you know,
- 1:02Speaker 3: and again, just the dialogue we're having out there as
- 1:05Speaker 3: maybe CJ and Mack are taking their ute. You know,
- 1:08Speaker 3: he's back there talking to myself, oppressed Mike and just
- 1:11Speaker 3: always engaging, you know, and that's that's what you want
- 1:14Speaker 3: to see out out the young quarterback.
- 1:18Speaker 2: John.
- 1:18Speaker 1: That was your question to Doug. We talked about you know,
- 1:21Speaker 1: Trevor making that jump last year. This year, Doug talked
- 1:23Speaker 1: about him being a more vocal leader. What did you
- 1:26Speaker 1: make of of Doug Peterson's answer and what he's seen
- 1:28Speaker 1: from Trevor so far in OTAs well.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing was, you know, he talked
- 1:34Speaker 2: about what every NFL coach and most NFL quarterbacks learn
- 1:39Speaker 2: then that fans don't really want to hear, and that
- 1:42Speaker 2: is it's not an overnight process. This thing. It takes
- 1:45Speaker 2: three or four years, and you can want the quarterback
- 1:48Speaker 2: to develop into that guy, into that all seeing, all
- 1:52Speaker 2: knowing coach in the field. Guy you wanted to happen
- 1:55Speaker 2: year one, you wanted to happen a year two. You
- 1:58Speaker 2: can take steps toward it, but it's hard to get
- 2:01Speaker 2: there without the time on task. Everything that Press Taylor
- 2:05Speaker 2: and Doug Peterson were talking about this morning, Bryan sounded
- 2:08Speaker 2: like they are seeing what they want to see out
- 2:10Speaker 2: of Trevor and then you'll see more growth. Again. I
- 2:13Speaker 2: don't think it's going to be he was here and
- 2:15Speaker 2: now he's here, but I think over time you're seeing
- 2:19Speaker 2: growth and they like what they're seeing.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Chelovy play Devil's Advocate and just ask you this, because
- 2:23Speaker 4: I know you get this question all the time in
- 2:25Speaker 4: your email inbox. How does CJ. Stroud come in and
- 2:28Speaker 4: light it up his first year and look like he
- 2:29Speaker 4: owns the NFL? And how's a guy like Pat Mahomes
- 2:32Speaker 4: not really need any startup time and step writing and go?
- 2:36Speaker 4: Why why be patient? When there are quarterbacks who were
- 2:39Speaker 4: out there achieving?
- 2:40Speaker 2: Well, I think they got those guys are going to
- 2:43Speaker 2: get better. I mean meaning Mahomes was at a high
- 2:46Speaker 2: level when he came in at a higher level now.
- 2:50Speaker 2: You know, as much as Jaguars fans doing here, Stroud
- 2:53Speaker 2: may have been at one level last year, and he's
- 2:55Speaker 2: going to get better at those things we're talking about.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Trevor's led to teams, to any records, he hasn't been bad.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I think they seem more coming.
- 3:05Speaker 4: And I do think it's important to remember that everyone's different, right,
- 3:08Speaker 4: I mean, this quarterback has a different way of playing
- 3:13Speaker 4: the game than C. J. Stroud and Pat Mahomes, and
- 3:15Speaker 4: the Jaguars have to work with him to get him
- 3:18Speaker 4: to the highest level of performance, and the offensive line
- 3:20Speaker 4: is a big part of that, getting him in a
- 3:22Speaker 4: position where he is comfortable standing back there to throw
- 3:25Speaker 4: the ball down the field. So I get it. I
- 3:27Speaker 4: just know that's an argument I get all the time
- 3:29Speaker 4: as well. Why are some guys successful immediately and why
- 3:32Speaker 4: do some guys need more time? I mean, I think
- 3:35Speaker 4: you can apply that Kui in almost any application of life.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I think that's fair to say. We're all just looking
- 3:41Speaker 1: for a better version of Trevor this season, and from
- 3:43Speaker 1: all intents and purposes, we've seen that so far. Doug
- 3:45Speaker 1: seems to think we'll see a lot of that progress
- 3:48Speaker 1: as well. Our second big thing today is going to
- 3:50Speaker 1: be the t and rokas, which is teaching. We talked
- 3:53Speaker 1: a lot about the new defensive coordinator coming in and
- 3:55Speaker 1: teaching his news game, but we also have to talk
- 3:57Speaker 1: about the new players and how the coaching ath needs
- 4:00Speaker 1: to adjust their teaching to those players.
- 4:03Speaker 5: You see that show up from the way he handled
- 4:05Speaker 5: himself in the huddle. It's also the meeting room, and
- 4:07Speaker 5: that's one of the things that he's not afraid to
- 4:09Speaker 5: speak up and ask a question. Where some young guys
- 4:11Speaker 5: that are new to a system are you know, they're
- 4:13Speaker 5: probably gonna wait till a meeting ends, go grab a
- 4:15Speaker 5: coach on the side. Hey, you said this what do
- 4:16Speaker 5: you mean by that? Mitchell? Stop a meeting. Make sure
- 4:19Speaker 5: he's on the same page of what the coach is expecting,
- 4:21Speaker 5: because sometimes you go quickly through these things because you
- 4:24Speaker 5: look around. There's a lot of familiar faces in a room.
- 4:26Speaker 5: Guys have heard this, or guys know, Okay, he's talking
- 4:29Speaker 5: about twenty twenty two Week three, this happened, blah blah blah.
- 4:33Speaker 5: We kind of gloss over some things where Mitchell, Hey,
- 4:36Speaker 5: what do you mean by this? Will pull up clip,
- 4:37Speaker 5: we'll all watch together. Make sure we're all speaking the
- 4:39Speaker 5: same language.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Mitch Morse is one of those new players, expects to
- 4:44Speaker 1: be the starter at center this year. Of course, he's
- 4:46Speaker 1: a veteran of the league, coming from the Buffalo Bills. Brian,
- 4:49Speaker 1: how much of this is, you know, get everybody on
- 4:51Speaker 1: the same page. We talk about this time, you're getting
- 4:53Speaker 1: the offensive line all on that one heartbeat rhythm, if
- 4:55Speaker 1: you want to put it that way. But teaching those
- 4:58Speaker 1: new guys and incorporating maybe things he has from his
- 5:00Speaker 1: old team he can bring here as well.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Well. It's about streamlining the entire program, how you teach it,
- 5:06Speaker 4: what you're teaching, the verbiage you use, you know, when
- 5:08Speaker 4: you listen to Press Taylor and last week when we
- 5:11Speaker 4: heard Ryan Nielsen, these guys are excellent communicators, which means
- 5:14Speaker 4: that they don't leave any gray area for their players
- 5:18Speaker 4: to wonder about. It's about guys being able to play
- 5:20Speaker 4: fast because they know what's expected of them on any
- 5:23Speaker 4: given play. So the teaching part of it is really important.
- 5:26Speaker 4: And then I'll just speak to the defensive side, because
- 5:28Speaker 4: last week I was so impressed with the clarity with
- 5:31Speaker 4: which Ryan Nielsen spoke. Now, I mean, they did talk
- 5:33Speaker 4: about putting guys in different positions and seeing what they've
- 5:36Speaker 4: got before they get to camp and ask guys to
- 5:39Speaker 4: do very specific things, but it's pretty clear that the
- 5:43Speaker 4: communication side of this thing is very important, especially at
- 5:46Speaker 4: Center with Mitch Morse.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think it was Doug he talked
- 5:50Speaker 2: about this morning. It may have impressed the communication with
- 5:54Speaker 2: Mitch Morse and him going back over quest Hey, I
- 6:01Speaker 2: want to see this, I want to make sure about this.
- 6:04Speaker 2: It was Doug who was talking about it. It showed
- 6:07Speaker 2: me exactly what everybody sort of knows about OTAs. This
- 6:10Speaker 2: is about that sort of communication. It's about making sure
- 6:14Speaker 2: these offensive linemen know what they need to do during
- 6:16Speaker 2: training camp in terms of finding out how they're going
- 6:18Speaker 2: to mesh together. We'll find that. We'll find that out
- 6:22Speaker 2: when the pads go on. It's all about communication right now.
- 6:26Speaker 1: It's always about communication, of course, staying healthy, especially on
- 6:29Speaker 1: the offensive line. Our final big thing for our version
- 6:33Speaker 1: of OTAs is going to be athleticism. That's something we've
- 6:35Speaker 1: heard from the GM. We've heard that from the coach,
- 6:37Speaker 1: and of course we've heard that from the players themselves
- 6:40Speaker 1: wanting to improve from year to year. Of course, we've
- 6:42Speaker 1: seen a ton of athleticism out of the rookie Brian
- 6:45Speaker 1: Thomas Junior. But Brian, when you're looking at maybe some
- 6:47Speaker 1: players that have been on the scene, we'll talk about,
- 6:49Speaker 1: you know, players we expect to make the jump, but
- 6:51Speaker 1: otherwise just athleticism. What are you hoping to see from
- 6:53Speaker 1: the team this year.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Well, we talked about bigger, stronger, faster for most of
- 6:58Speaker 4: the off season after Trent you know, made those comments
- 7:02Speaker 4: in late January. Well, you know you're watching Brian Thomas
- 7:05Speaker 4: right there. I mean, this is a game of size
- 7:07Speaker 4: and speed, and you're hopeful that you are bigger and
- 7:11Speaker 4: you are faster at key positions. Wide receiver is one
- 7:15Speaker 4: of them. I'm not sure that they got bigger, although
- 7:18Speaker 4: they got faster at quarterback. With the speed that they
- 7:21Speaker 4: were able to add, this is a game of speed.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Andy Reid said that right after the draft where they
- 7:27Speaker 4: talked about you know why they took Xavier Worthy in
- 7:30Speaker 4: Kansas City and the draft they said, hey, look, you
- 7:32Speaker 4: know we knew we needed different positions, but this game
- 7:35Speaker 4: is about speed. John, That's the way this game has
- 7:38Speaker 4: evolved in recent years. And I think the thing I'm
- 7:41Speaker 4: looking for is to see guys who are faster.
- 7:43Speaker 2: You know, they look faster. I mean, now, Brian Thomas
- 7:45Speaker 2: the fast, and we can trust that Gabe Davis will
- 7:47Speaker 2: be fast. You know. I think the thing with Gabe
- 7:50Speaker 2: Davis Brian Thomas when you watch them, just like you
- 7:55Speaker 2: watched them on that clip there. He and now the
- 7:59Speaker 2: coaches talked about it. He makes everything look easy. It
- 8:03Speaker 2: seems like football comes easy to him. He does things naturally.
- 8:08Speaker 2: That's all you can tell from a guy. Right now,
- 8:11Speaker 2: there's time to see how he does with the ball
- 8:13Speaker 2: in the air with defenders on him in game situations.
- 8:18Speaker 2: So far, he looks like a first round draft pick.
- 8:22Speaker 2: People watching this when they see him move. That's what
- 8:25Speaker 2: they want to see, and people will be pleased with
- 8:29Speaker 2: what they see from Brian Thomas as the first round.
- 8:33Speaker 4: And since we were talking about communication just a moment ago,
- 8:35Speaker 4: it's important to point out that Press Taylor said that
- 8:37Speaker 4: this is a guy who's very easy to communicate with.
- 8:40Speaker 4: He's got a high football IQ. The game itself just
- 8:43Speaker 4: comes naturally to him. So in terms of making it
- 8:46Speaker 4: clear what and he's a rookie receiver, what his role
- 8:49Speaker 4: is on any specific play in any specific situation, to
- 8:52Speaker 4: let him play that fast, Press seems to believe that
- 8:54Speaker 4: his communication level of his IQ will go a long
- 8:57Speaker 4: way towards his success as a rookie.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Always alert incur, but we're hopeful we'll be able to
- 9:01Speaker 1: pick up the offense pretty quickly, especially with OTAs and
- 9:04Speaker 1: training camp around the corner.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Stay with us here on Jagsam.
- 9:07Speaker 1: We'll have more live looks at o TA number four
- 9:09Speaker 1: and we'll talk about players we expect to make a
- 9:11Speaker 1: big jump this season.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Move the Freight, Move the Freight.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Magellan Transportation voted the coolest office space in Jacksonville. You
- 9:35Speaker 1: can apply online at www. Dot Magellanlogistics dot com.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Welcome back, to jags am here.
- 9:43Speaker 1: That's a live look of OTAs underway number four. We're
- 9:47Speaker 1: gonna have ten of them and then mini camp after that.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I know we talked a lot about you know, they're
- 9:53Speaker 1: not physical, but this is a really important time to
- 9:55Speaker 1: kind of get everybody on the same page, get everyone,
- 9:58Speaker 1: you know, speaking the same language so beat, especially when
- 10:00Speaker 1: you have a new defensive coordinator coming in. We are
- 10:03Speaker 1: going to talk specifically now a little bit about players
- 10:06Speaker 1: we think are going.
- 10:06Speaker 2: To make a big jump.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Obviously, we talked a ton about Josh Allen last year.
- 10:10Speaker 1: He was playing on that contract year, trying to get
- 10:13Speaker 1: himself a deal. He got himself a long term deal,
- 10:15Speaker 1: so he did exactly what he needed to do. But
- 10:17Speaker 1: I think fair to say he's probably the Jaguar that
- 10:18Speaker 1: made the biggest jump last season, and now we're going
- 10:21Speaker 1: to talk a little bit about who we think will
- 10:22Speaker 1: make a big jump this season. Brian, when you're looking
- 10:24Speaker 1: at this roster expecting a player to make a big difference, who's.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Someone you're looking at.
- 10:28Speaker 4: I think trigon Walker is the guy who's going to
- 10:30Speaker 4: make the biggest difference, this biggest jump this year. You know,
- 10:33Speaker 4: in the last four games he had five sacks. Not coincidence,
- 10:37Speaker 4: Josh Allen had four sacks in those last four games
- 10:40Speaker 4: and set the franchise record. Look, he's been since the
- 10:43Speaker 4: day he arrived, a really good player on the line
- 10:45Speaker 4: of scrimmage, but he hadn't been that pass rusher. He
- 10:48Speaker 4: wasn't a finisher, and that was really the word on
- 10:51Speaker 4: him coming out of Georgia was that he was not
- 10:53Speaker 4: used as a pure pass rusher and didn't have the
- 10:57Speaker 4: skill set the combination of moves coming out of college.
- 11:00Speaker 4: It would take some time. Well, end of the second year,
- 11:03Speaker 4: we started to see that, particularly in the game against
- 11:05Speaker 4: the Ravens here where he would use the bull rush
- 11:09Speaker 4: and drive the right tackle back and he just reached
- 11:11Speaker 4: into the pocket and pulled the quarterback to the ground.
- 11:15Speaker 4: We saw pass rush against the against the Panthers too,
- 11:18Speaker 4: So I think he has a huge jump coming in
- 11:22Speaker 4: his second year, I'm sorry, third year, and in particular
- 11:26Speaker 4: I think it because you've got Eric Armstead, who's there,
- 11:29Speaker 4: healthy Devon Hamilton, you have a new defensive scheme. I
- 11:31Speaker 4: think that will work to his advantage. I'm excited for
- 11:35Speaker 4: what I think he's going to be in his third season.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, that he's gonna take a jump. I
- 11:40Speaker 2: would counter that also by saying that even if he
- 11:43Speaker 2: plays as he did last year, he's living up to it.
- 11:47Speaker 2: To me and I know fans, there's always talk about
- 11:52Speaker 2: Trayvon one to two pick and all that. If you
- 11:54Speaker 2: get ten sacks a year out of Trayvon Walker with
- 11:57Speaker 2: everything else he brings. He to me, people ask me
- 12:01Speaker 2: all the time, who are the best players in this defense?
- 12:04Speaker 2: It's Josh Allen Trayvon Walker.
- 12:06Speaker 4: But let me be more specific. In training camp in
- 12:08Speaker 4: Detroit last year, at a TV pre production meeting, Josh
- 12:11Speaker 4: Allen said, my goal was to finish. That was what
- 12:14Speaker 4: we didn't see early on from Trayvon Walker last year.
- 12:17Speaker 4: He was always around the quarterback. He was pushing his
- 12:20Speaker 4: way into the pocket, but he wasn't a finisher until
- 12:22Speaker 4: the end of the season. A couple of things again,
- 12:25Speaker 4: if you have a healthy Devon Hamilton and how they
- 12:27Speaker 4: use Eric Armstead pushing the pocket and forcing the quarterback
- 12:31Speaker 4: to get outside, my guess is he's going to run
- 12:33Speaker 4: towards forty four as opposed to forty one. Just think,
- 12:36Speaker 4: and I don't know that a big jump means he's
- 12:38Speaker 4: going to go from ten sacks to seventeen and a half.
- 12:41Speaker 4: But in terms of big I mean consistent finishing over
- 12:45Speaker 4: the course of an entire season as opposed to all
- 12:48Speaker 4: concentrated in one area of the.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Season, John, when you were looking at players that you
- 12:52Speaker 1: felt like might make that jump, I know you were
- 12:55Speaker 1: kind of talking about something similar to what the coaches
- 12:57Speaker 1: were talking about and what they're expecting in the return
- 12:59Speaker 1: of Cleveland.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and I inserted Ezra Cleveland into this segment. I
- 13:07Speaker 2: don't know that it's even fair to him to say
- 13:09Speaker 2: that he's gonna take a huge jump, because I don't
- 13:11Speaker 2: think he played bad last year. He came in seven games,
- 13:15Speaker 2: he was injured much of that, so he really didn't
- 13:18Speaker 2: get a chance to see what he was. But I
- 13:20Speaker 2: think I wanted to talk about him in terms of
- 13:24Speaker 2: a guy who can raise the position more than the
- 13:29Speaker 2: individual player. I think the coaches believe that he is
- 13:36Speaker 2: an upgrade over what they had. When you talk about
- 13:39Speaker 2: you know, they've got a lot of questions this year,
- 13:41Speaker 2: you didn't do enough to improve the offensive line. I
- 13:43Speaker 2: think the presence of Cleveland is a guy that they
- 13:48Speaker 2: think will be an upgrade in terms of being there
- 13:51Speaker 2: the entire season, and if he makes that side of
- 13:54Speaker 2: the line better along with Mitch Morse. To me, Brian,
- 13:59Speaker 2: if that the line is better, if the interior part
- 14:02Speaker 2: of the line is better, by definition, it raises the
- 14:05Speaker 2: entire offense.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Well, we talked about bigger, right and stronger. Although Tyler
- 14:09Speaker 4: Shatley's one of the strongest players in the locker room,
- 14:11Speaker 4: he's bigger Cleveland then, and you can see it right there.
- 14:14Speaker 4: He is a big guy. He's got a lot more
- 14:17Speaker 4: length in terms of the ability to keep defensive linemen
- 14:21Speaker 4: from getting into his body and bull rushing him. A
- 14:24Speaker 4: bigger yeah. I mean you look at him and Walker
- 14:26Speaker 4: Little standing side by side. There's a tackle in a guard.
- 14:29Speaker 4: So I think he's a guy that will significantly upgrade.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Remember he gets here from Minnesota, they plug him right
- 14:36Speaker 4: into the starting lineup, then he gets hurt, then they
- 14:38Speaker 4: move him outside to tackle, and John mentioned he played
- 14:41Speaker 4: hurt the rest of the season. So you see a big,
- 14:43Speaker 4: strong guy like that who's had the offseason to get
- 14:46Speaker 4: ready for playing left guard, and you have to feel
- 14:48Speaker 4: better about it, especially with the addition of Mitch Morse,
- 14:51Speaker 4: who brings that veteran presence in the middle, who makes
- 14:54Speaker 4: everyone's job easier's. I think you're right. I think he's
- 14:59Speaker 4: a guy who can take a a big step forward
- 15:01Speaker 4: in terms of the production of third down and short Yeah.
- 15:04Speaker 2: And it just seems like when people talk about the line,
- 15:08Speaker 2: it's almost like they gloss over that and they feel like, well,
- 15:14Speaker 2: he was here last year, so he was quote part
- 15:16Speaker 2: of the problem, right, Well, the reason I wanted to
- 15:19Speaker 2: discuss him. I don't think that's necessarily fair to him,
- 15:23Speaker 2: and I think it may be something that people come
- 15:26Speaker 2: back at the end of this season say, oh, well,
- 15:28Speaker 2: he was consistent, he was there the entire year. What
- 15:31Speaker 2: a difference it is for that position from the coaching
- 15:33Speaker 2: SaaS point of view. If he's there for seventeen games,
- 15:36Speaker 2: yea and a veteran, a fifty year guy as opposed
- 15:40Speaker 2: to a revolving door there. I think that is an
- 15:43Speaker 2: area where you could see the offense as a whole.
- 15:46Speaker 4: In four starting guards on the left side last year,
- 15:49Speaker 4: if he plays seventeen games, that's a massive win.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Consistency and staying healthier two things they're definitely focusing on,
- 15:55Speaker 1: particularly with the offensive line. I'm talking about staying healthy
- 15:58Speaker 1: for my person. I'm picking Tyson Campbell because I think
- 16:00Speaker 1: that's someone we had our eye on last year. He
- 16:03Speaker 1: was going up against Calvin Ridley in practice every week,
- 16:06Speaker 1: taking on the number one ride receiver of the opposite team,
- 16:09Speaker 1: and he dealt with a lot of injuries. Right It's
- 16:10Speaker 1: a hamstring, you know, and that kind of caters and
- 16:13Speaker 1: then you know you're trying to compensate. It was something
- 16:16Speaker 1: that nagged with him all year and that really limited him.
- 16:18Speaker 1: With six games he missed last season. There wasn't a
- 16:21Speaker 1: lot of consistency he was able to get. And you know,
- 16:24Speaker 1: there's a lot of talk in the off season they
- 16:25Speaker 1: need a corner, they need a corner. If they can
- 16:27Speaker 1: get Tyson Campbell to play it up to what they
- 16:29Speaker 1: think he's capable of, you know, re sign him after
- 16:32Speaker 1: this season, that's the corner you need, right So obviously
- 16:35Speaker 1: there'll be a lot of focus on that group as
- 16:37Speaker 1: a whole, what they're able to do.
- 16:38Speaker 2: I think Tyson has the.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Ability to really make a statement this season, and I'm
- 16:43Speaker 1: hopeful that he'll be able to stay.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Healthy and do that.
- 16:45Speaker 4: When you have one corner you can anchor on one side,
- 16:49Speaker 4: it allows you to do so many different things with
- 16:52Speaker 4: your coverage. Packages, whether it's nickel or dime or however
- 16:54Speaker 4: you want to roll the coverage. But if you can
- 16:58Speaker 4: count on Tyson Campbell to take the other teams number
- 17:00Speaker 4: one receiver and be able to play with him most
- 17:03Speaker 4: of the time, it gives you a world of flexibility.
- 17:06Speaker 4: And they missed that last year when he popped the
- 17:08Speaker 4: hamstring against the Colts. He really I don't think he
- 17:11Speaker 4: was ever the same the rest of the year.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Yeah, the graphic says missed six games. I think he
- 17:17Speaker 2: missed missed them. It felt like he missed the rest
- 17:21Speaker 2: of the season. I mean, it's and he is a
- 17:24Speaker 2: lynchpin guy to me. The way that it played out
- 17:29Speaker 2: last year, they didn't have a shut down corner in
- 17:34Speaker 2: the secondary. They had Darius Williams, who had some picks,
- 17:38Speaker 2: also got beat in some plays that he'd liked to
- 17:40Speaker 2: have had back. Tyson was probably, you know what a thirty.
- 17:47Speaker 2: You know, it didn't feel like they had an elite
- 17:49Speaker 2: corner last year. If he plays to what he did
- 17:52Speaker 2: last year, and there are people who think he'll fit
- 17:55Speaker 2: better in this scheme than what he was trying to
- 17:57Speaker 2: play before. If that's the case, that's a huge upgrade
- 18:01Speaker 2: because I said earlier, Trayvon and Josh Allen may of
- 18:05Speaker 2: the two best players in this defense. Tyson's a guy
- 18:08Speaker 2: who has flirted with being in that group. If he
- 18:13Speaker 2: does more than flirt this year, all of a sudden,
- 18:14Speaker 2: they got three big down players.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Well, it's a big year for him too, because it's
- 18:17Speaker 4: a contract. Yeah right, I mean, so he's got a
- 18:19Speaker 4: chance to prove it and to make it if he
- 18:21Speaker 4: gets it done this year. And anybody who knows him,
- 18:23Speaker 4: you guys included, No, he's one of those strong minded guys.
- 18:26Speaker 4: I mean, he really understands what it takes in terms
- 18:29Speaker 4: of time on the field, time in the weight room,
- 18:32Speaker 4: time in the film room. He puts in the work
- 18:34Speaker 4: last year. The Jaguars should have been focused on getting
- 18:38Speaker 4: a deal done for him this offseason, but they didn't
- 18:42Speaker 4: have to be because of the injury. This should have
- 18:44Speaker 4: been one of those things that Trent was trying to
- 18:47Speaker 4: squeeze in and make it happen because of the injury.
- 18:50Speaker 4: It didn't happen that way. I think this is a
- 18:52Speaker 4: really I expect a lot from him this year.
- 18:55Speaker 2: They're real positive for Tyson is that if he's healthy,
- 18:59Speaker 2: the floor is very hot. Oh He's not going to
- 19:02Speaker 2: be bad. It is a matter of how good he
- 19:03Speaker 2: can be.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Definitely an X factor for this team. Andre Cisco also
- 19:07Speaker 1: in that contract year, so two of the defenders that
- 19:09Speaker 1: will have our eyes on this year. Coming up with
- 19:12Speaker 1: more of OTA practice. Doug Peterson got his eyes on everybody,
- 19:15Speaker 1: and we'll go over some ozone mailbag questions as well.
- 19:18Speaker 1: After the break, Jaguars fans eure up at fanatics dot
- 19:37Speaker 1: com with all the latest drag styles. You can chomp
- 19:39Speaker 1: now and get today's special offer. Fanatics dot Com officially
- 19:44Speaker 1: licensed everything.
- 19:48Speaker 5: French.
- 19:52Speaker 1: The ozone is back. We took a brief week away
- 19:55Speaker 1: because we had Bucky once. We asked Bucky a couple
- 19:57Speaker 1: of questions, but now we're going back to John to
- 19:59Speaker 1: get his infinite finite.
- 20:02Speaker 4: We appreciate it.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Always is finite infinite ten all knowing.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Anyway, John is going to answer some of our questions.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Our first question is about the International Pathway program, So
- 20:15Speaker 1: how long can a team keep an International Pathway player
- 20:18Speaker 1: on their roster. The Jags were awarded aa OOLA in
- 20:22Speaker 1: twenty twenty two. Patrick Murtau this year, do teams eventually
- 20:25Speaker 1: have to sign them to the fifty three or the
- 20:27Speaker 1: practice squad at some point.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Well, if they make the team, they can be on
- 20:32Speaker 2: the team, and definitely they can be like real live
- 20:35Speaker 2: NFL players. They had a player and I always mess
- 20:41Speaker 2: up his name, I owe Oyola, he was here for
- 20:47Speaker 2: two years. You can have one under that, under that program,
- 20:50Speaker 2: as I understand it. And they signed Murtaw this year,
- 20:53Speaker 2: so there's actually.
- 20:54Speaker 4: A practice squad player.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Well, it's a roster, right, and they can extend the
- 20:58Speaker 2: number on your practice squad from sixteen to seventeen if
- 21:01Speaker 2: they are on the practice squad. So if they make
- 21:05Speaker 2: the team, they can be on the team indefinitely. And
- 21:08Speaker 2: then you can go side another one and you can
- 21:10Speaker 2: have one on the practice squad and definitely as well.
- 21:14Speaker 2: And there is something this year where they've expanded it
- 21:18Speaker 2: where all teams can sort of automatically have won the
- 21:24Speaker 2: entire season on the practice squad. Before there was it
- 21:28Speaker 2: wasn't as wide open and I haven't researched it much
- 21:30Speaker 2: more than that. Best Min's Dame.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Look, the NFL's goal is to expand internationally. They're playing
- 21:35Speaker 4: in South Hollow, Brazil, they're talking Madrid in Paris, and
- 21:38Speaker 4: in order really to expand, they need to have some
- 21:42Speaker 4: players from some of these countries. They need to have
- 21:44Speaker 4: the game played in some of these countries to a
- 21:47Speaker 4: greater level. So they're really they're pushing this program.
- 21:52Speaker 2: And Myrta, by the way, I don't have developed his
- 21:56Speaker 2: as an NFL player, but he looks the part and
- 21:59Speaker 2: you can ease see how a team could say, hey,
- 22:02Speaker 2: it's worth our time investing in this to see where
- 22:06Speaker 2: it goes because he's impressed.
- 22:07Speaker 4: Well, it's the left tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles. Jordan
- 22:10Speaker 4: Malita is a former rugby player, which is amazing how
- 22:14Speaker 4: big he is. Right, you can find these guys if
- 22:17Speaker 4: if you just are willing to take the time to
- 22:19Speaker 4: develop them.
- 22:20Speaker 1: And that's a lot of what it is obviously American
- 22:22Speaker 1: football and not huge in other countries necessarily. So if
- 22:24Speaker 1: you can take athletic players and teach them American football
- 22:27Speaker 1: a lot of talent that can be utilized. There our
- 22:29Speaker 1: second Ozone mill bag question about the Stadium of the future.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Ozone I rent the Stadium of the future, is gonna
- 22:35Speaker 1: have synthetic turf?
- 22:36Speaker 2: Please?
- 22:36Speaker 1: Saving so other than the whole growing grass and side deal,
- 22:40Speaker 1: why would you go away from grass?
- 22:41Speaker 2: Well, that's the report and Brian, you may know more
- 22:45Speaker 2: about this than I did. I haven't researched this a
- 22:48Speaker 2: whole lot. My understanding from the reports is that they're
- 22:52Speaker 2: going to go to terf. Synthetic inside may have something
- 22:56Speaker 2: to do with it. I'm gonna find out more, don't.
- 22:58Speaker 4: I don't know that much more about it. I do
- 22:59Speaker 4: know so that there's a push around the league to
- 23:02Speaker 4: have a consistent surface, right, to have the same surface everywhere.
- 23:07Speaker 4: You obviously can't have natural grass everywhere. It doesn't grow
- 23:11Speaker 4: in certain places at certain times of the year, and
- 23:14Speaker 4: we can't play it indoors in certain times of the year.
- 23:17Speaker 4: I hadn't heard that they were going to the synthetic,
- 23:19Speaker 4: but I do know that there's a push in some
- 23:21Speaker 4: circles in the league to have everybody have the same turf.
- 23:24Speaker 4: And of course they want it to be the good stuff.
- 23:25Speaker 4: They want to have this thing scientifically engineered to be
- 23:29Speaker 4: better for players and their bodies. But I don't know
- 23:32Speaker 4: any more than that.
- 23:33Speaker 1: It's possibility for the hybrid stuff, I think as well.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I know Green Bay has that, you know, real grass
- 23:37Speaker 1: sewn in with the synthetic grass.
- 23:38Speaker 4: It doesn't get pulled up through a framework here.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Yeah, some of the players are fans of that kind
- 23:43Speaker 1: of dynamic, So maybe something like that we'll see, Because
- 23:45Speaker 1: I know this stadium isn't fully closed. The new stadium
- 23:48Speaker 1: of the future, there will be some breezeway in there.
- 23:49Speaker 4: So you know, there's a tray in Phoenix and the
- 23:53Speaker 4: tray slides out with the entire field, And in Houston
- 23:56Speaker 4: they used to have a tray system where they just
- 24:00Speaker 4: lift trays out and take them outside, and maybe they
- 24:03Speaker 4: can do something like that.
- 24:04Speaker 2: We'll keep an eye on those things. Obviously.
- 24:05Speaker 1: That's all developing as the stadium pitch rolls along. Our
- 24:08Speaker 1: final ozone question of the day is about some of
- 24:11Speaker 1: those new defensive players on this roster gave from Washington,
- 24:16Speaker 1: DC says, haven't seen many people commenting on the.
- 24:18Speaker 2: New defensive free agents that were just added.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Are they camp bodies or do they have a decent
- 24:22Speaker 1: chance to make the final roster? What does that vote
- 24:25Speaker 1: poorly for guys like Monterrek Brown, Greg Junior, Christian braswell.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Well, I don't think it necessarily votes poorly. I think
- 24:32Speaker 2: when you're bringing in a new system, when you get
- 24:35Speaker 2: to this time of year, which is after the draft
- 24:38Speaker 2: and after collegiate free agency, you get into rookie camp,
- 24:41Speaker 2: you get into a tag, you take one final look
- 24:43Speaker 2: at your not a final, but you take a fresh
- 24:45Speaker 2: look at the roster and you say, Okay, we like
- 24:49Speaker 2: these young guys. We also want to have an option.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Coaches don't love often always just having a second year
- 24:59Speaker 2: guy of a so you want to make sure that
- 25:02Speaker 2: you have some fifty year, sixth year as an option
- 25:04Speaker 2: there and see how it works. So I'm not gonna
- 25:07Speaker 2: call anybody on these lists a can't body, but they're
- 25:12Speaker 2: creating competition. And you also go out and when you
- 25:16Speaker 2: bring in a new scheme, and you bring in a
- 25:18Speaker 2: new defensive back scheme or secondary scheme, you bring in
- 25:21Speaker 2: guys who fit that. You may not have that level
- 25:24Speaker 2: of guy on the roster. When I say level, I
- 25:26Speaker 2: mean veteran experience. You may not already have somebody who
- 25:31Speaker 2: fits the scheme on your roster when you're changing schemes.
- 25:34Speaker 4: In particular, Monterek Brown and Greg Junior sixth and seventh
- 25:37Speaker 4: round picks, those guys generally signed three year deals. They're
- 25:40Speaker 4: coming into the final year of their deal, and if
- 25:43Speaker 4: you're going to go forward with them, you need to
- 25:47Speaker 4: find out right now, whether they're the guy or not,
- 25:50Speaker 4: or you need to have other guys in the pipeline
- 25:53Speaker 4: that you're developing so that if you're not going to
- 25:55Speaker 4: pay these guys, these guys are ready to step in.
- 25:57Speaker 4: You're always going to have some of those developmental guys
- 26:00Speaker 4: at the bottom of your roster that you're trying to fix.
- 26:02Speaker 4: And especially if we're going to see a contract for
- 26:05Speaker 4: Trevor Lawrence here, those guys become critical because they play
- 26:09Speaker 4: at a fixed number or they played a lower number
- 26:12Speaker 4: that you can manage on your roster.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence contract is always something thing that we are
- 26:17Speaker 1: thinking about, whether it's you know, this week or the
- 26:19Speaker 1: coming weeks.
- 26:20Speaker 2: That's something that we imagine we'll get done very soon.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Stay with us here on jags am as we preview
- 26:24Speaker 1: what we're going to be looking at at OTAs today have.
- 26:41Speaker 2: To explosive state.
- 26:42Speaker 5: You know, it's tough enough being consistently efficient. We want
- 26:46Speaker 5: to be able to have that explosive element to us.
- 26:49Speaker 5: And Brian's length and speed is a big thing that
- 26:51Speaker 5: was obviously the strength of his throughout his college career
- 26:54Speaker 5: with the numbers and all that, and then something gave
- 26:56Speaker 5: has always brought and you're not going to be a
- 26:59Speaker 5: super high path completion percentage if you're pushing the ball
- 27:01Speaker 5: way down the field. And that's something we feel like
- 27:04Speaker 5: we've done a good job. When we've called the play
- 27:06Speaker 5: action stuff. We've been particularly explosive. When you look at
- 27:09Speaker 5: our numbers in terms of concepts that we've called and
- 27:12Speaker 5: opportunities push the ball, we've done a good job with that.
- 27:15Speaker 5: But we do feel like we have the people that
- 27:17Speaker 5: we're able to push the ball down the field. We
- 27:19Speaker 5: just got to be able to get the opportunities to
- 27:20Speaker 5: do that, and we've got to call those types of
- 27:22Speaker 5: ways throughout the course of games.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Offensive coordinator Press Taylor talking about this offense being more explosive,
- 27:29Speaker 1: more vertical, Does just Brian Thomas alone give them that
- 27:31Speaker 1: option or do you think as a whole everybody's staying
- 27:33Speaker 1: healthy will be a big part of that.
- 27:35Speaker 2: John Well, I think the biggest thing with that, and
- 27:38Speaker 2: he alluded to a little bit. I think they're fine
- 27:41Speaker 2: in terms of threats. If they get better on the
- 27:44Speaker 2: offensive front and run more consistently when they want to run,
- 27:50Speaker 2: they will a get more opportunities because to be on
- 27:52Speaker 2: the field more, you convert third downs all of a
- 27:56Speaker 2: sudden that starts drawing the defense up and you get
- 27:58Speaker 2: more opportunities to go ankle last year. Honestly, in the
- 28:03Speaker 2: last eight or nine games the last year. If I'm
- 28:06Speaker 2: playing against this team, I'm not going to commit my
- 28:11Speaker 2: defense overly to stop short yards because I know they
- 28:15Speaker 2: can stop it, and therefore I'm not gonna give up
- 28:17Speaker 2: a whole lot over the top. So I think just
- 28:19Speaker 2: getting better on the interior offensive line will help everything,
- 28:22Speaker 2: including the d passing game.
- 28:24Speaker 4: I can't add anything to that other than you know,
- 28:25Speaker 4: I've been hammering on the offensive line in particularly the
- 28:28Speaker 4: interior all off season because third down and two was
- 28:32Speaker 4: such a weak spot for this team last year and
- 28:35Speaker 4: gave no threat of play action. When you've got a
- 28:37Speaker 4: quarterback like Trevor Lawrence, the play action that's everything to
- 28:41Speaker 4: get those one to one matchups down the field. So
- 28:43Speaker 4: they've got to be better there. And you know, my
- 28:45Speaker 4: sense is with Cleveland and Moorse and if Sheriff can
- 28:48Speaker 4: stay healthy, I think it's important to be fair to him.
- 28:50Speaker 4: You know, he injured his ankle last year an opening
- 28:52Speaker 4: day in Indianapolis and didn't miss time. He kept playing.
- 28:57Speaker 4: How many times did he go down with the ankle
- 28:59Speaker 4: during gameslast year because it was bothering him and he
- 29:01Speaker 4: kept playing. If he's healthy, if he can stay healthy,
- 29:05Speaker 4: he's as important as Morse or.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Cleveland complimentary football. There's a reason we always say it.
- 29:11Speaker 1: We'll keep an eye on things at OTA's this week,
- 29:13Speaker 1: and of course we'll check in again with you at
- 29:15Speaker 1: OTAs as they wrap up next week. Thank you as always,
- 29:17Speaker 1: we'll see you next week on Jags. I am
