- 0:00Taylor.
- 0:01Oh, what a goal by Peter Taylor.
- 0:19Ah, welcome to team of the 80s.
- 0:22My name's Gary Spencer.
- 0:23You definitely know that by now.
- 0:25And if you don't, well, that's what it is.
- 0:27And.
- 0:27And welcome to this week's podcast, team of the 80s.
- 0:31Before we get into it, just like to say that last week I spent two and a half hours with the legendary Andy Gray.
- 0:40Yeah, that Andy Gray.
- 0:42Andy Gray that scored at Liverpool in that mammoth FA cup semi final.
- 0:46So, yeah, I had a great chat with Andy.
- 0:50We played together a bit as school boys.
- 0:52I didn't last very long.
- 0:54Um, but, yeah, I had a great chat with Andy and I'll be bringing his show out, his podcast out with me in the international break, so that's something to look forward to.
- 1:05Okay, could you please, like, subscribe?
- 1:09Comment.
- 1:11It really helps with the algorithm and it gets me in front of you and it helps me debate with you.
- 1:17So you can also find me on TikTok and Instagram and all the other nonsense.
- 1:23And if you either listen to it on Apple Podcast, Amazon, Spotify, or you can watch this on YouTube, either way, it's great to debate with you.
- 1:33It's great.
- 1:33Football's a game of opinions.
- 1:36I'd like to hear yours.
- 1:38You keep hearing mine.
- 1:39And, yeah, it makes the whole show.
- 1:42The whole.
- 1:42The show without you guys is really just me talking to this camera, and I don't want to be doing that too much on my own.
- 1:49Let's start this week with the boss.
- 1:50Let's start with Sage, or Sarge, whatever his name is.
- 1:57I'm not particularly happy with him, you know, and before any of you pelt me and tell me you didn't like Glasner.
- 2:04No, I didn't like Lesnar either, in the beginning.
- 2:06And actually, it did all work out for him, but it didn't work out for Vieira, and I wasn't sure about him.
- 2:12And it certainly didn't work out for frankly Burr.
- 2:15And I wanted frankly Berg on after the Huddersfield game.
- 2:18That was when we got beat three nil by a team that had just come up.
- 2:22I'm not happy with Sage because I said this in my podcast last week.
- 2:29He's just very uninspiring to me.
- 2:31And right now, these boys need something they believe in.
- 2:35And there's a lot of noise on Twitter as to why so many players are leaving.
- 2:40Why?
- 2:41Well, there's many reasons why they're leaving.
- 2:43One, they want a payday.
- 2:45Two, the club is probably a bigger club.
- 2:49And three, they are.
- 2:50They're obviously not buying into what the new boss is sending them.
- 2:53Are they?
- 2:53They're not.
- 2:54You know, you don't.
- 2:55You know there's bigger clubs out there that are managed.
- 2:59So for instance, Mourinho or Venga or Klopp, you know, I know that those guys manage big clubs, but if somebody's not getting in the side, they can move, but they don't.
- 3:15Those type of managers don't lose many players, do they?
- 3:19I feel sorry for Unai Emery at Villa.
- 3:23He's lost a lot of players.
- 3:25But then you can tell by the way they played.
- 3:28I've just watched the Arsenal game.
- 3:29You can tell by the way that.
- 3:31That they played, that they're all buying into his philosophy.
- 3:34I look at the way we've played in our first two games, we look horrible.
- 3:40And I mean horrible.
- 3:42And those people on Twitter that were talking about that, we did well on Friday in the first half.
- 3:48What, after the first five minutes?
- 3:51Because after the first five minutes we got pumped.
- 3:55Seriously.
- 3:56Could have been five, six or seven.
- 3:59So that's a big concern to me, that the players aren't buying into what Sage is doing.
- 4:05The Ultras.
- 4:07I'd like to mention the Ultras because I do feel they disbanded on Thursday.
- 4:13I think it was last Thursday after 20 years.
- 4:17Definitely.
- 4:17Definitely a big asset to the club, but I think that they were more of an asset to the club than as a media PR spin than actually in the ground.
- 4:30Yes, they did help with the atmosphere, but you know what?
- 4:34I've seen great atmospheres at Sellers park in the third division with 15, 000 people and I've seen great atmospheres in 1979.
- 4:41Yeah.
- 4:42Admittedly we have 52, 000 that night, but there's a great atmosphere.
- 4:46And all through that time, third, second, first, and then you said the Premier League.
- 4:51Then for you that don't know, because there seems to be a lot of you that don't know the First Division was the Premier League.
- 4:58That whole ground chanting Eagles, big atmosphere.
- 5:02But one thing that you're not going to get at Sellers park is a big atmosphere if the team aren't playing well.
- 5:10So here's the thing.
- 5:12I very much appreciate what the Holders did at Crystal Palace.
- 5:15I think they were fantastic for the team.
- 5:18I felt that they were definitely more of a plus as a PR spin because every time they club were on tv, every time the club got mad.
- 5:26Oh, the best atmosphere in the Premier League.
- 5:29It's not the best atmosphere in the Premier League.
- 5:32We know that there's.
- 5:33It's not the same as Newcastle Away, it's not the same as Liverpool.
- 5:38Away, it's not the same as Man United.
- 5:39Away, those grounds are much larger, much larger and the sound is much more.
- 5:46But the atmosphere for what we have is excellent.
- 5:51But if we play well, we'll get that atmosphere back.
- 5:54We're not going to have a great atmosphere playing like we're playing.
- 5:57So let's sort out the plane and the atmosphere take care of itself.
- 6:01Meanwhile, a huge thank you to the Ultras and what they've done for us, our transfers.
- 6:09Yeah, a lot of people are excited by the time this comes out.
- 6:14I'm not sure if A Sar will still be a Crystal palace player because it's coming out on Tuesday around lunchtime.
- 6:23I'm not sure if Sarah still be a Palace player by then.
- 6:25And all those of you jumping up and down saying, oh, we're not going to sell him because we don't have a replacement, fine, we may not sell sa.
- 6:34But if he doesn't want to play, it's going to be very difficult, isn't it?
- 6:38I think I was digging out Sage earlier.
- 6:44I think one thing Sage did do, even though he mugged off fans was protect Sar to some way by saying he had a groin injury.
- 6:51So maybe you'll get some points with that from sa because Sage didn't throw him under the bus.
- 6:56He didn't say no, he doesn't want to play.
- 6:57He said that he's got an injury, but of course he doesn't have an injury and I'm pretty certain that Mateta doesn't have an injury either.
- 7:04Now I don't know if Parish told Matteo just to off for a month and sort himself out, but those two boys don't want to play for us.
- 7:13So yeah, we can keep them but.
- 7:16But we've seen before what it's like when a player's at the club and he doesn't want to play for you.
- 7:22Gahi was an exception.
- 7:24Gahi is made out of different stuff and although I like what Gay he did, I don't blame the players if they want to get a move because why wouldn't they?
- 7:36This is their last shot at a bigger club.
- 7:38They're going to get more dough and they're going to end up at a bigger club.
- 7:42So I can't listen all you guys expect palace, these players to have like Crystal palace tattooed across their heart.
- 7:49Those days are gone.
- 7:50Those days are long gone.
- 7:51There's no loyalty.
- 7:52There hasn't been any.
- 7:53There hasn't been loyalty in football since the 80s, 80s on and as soon as the big dough came along, that was the end of the loyalty.
- 8:01Right?
- 8:01So forget it.
- 8:03If somebody wants to play for the club, fantastic.
- 8:07And we can pay them and it's all good.
- 8:09But as soon as somebody doesn't want to play for the club, it's going to be very, very difficult.
- 8:15So what do I think is going to happen?
- 8:19I would say Saab will probably get his move.
- 8:22I would say Sal would probably get his move.
- 8:25Mateta.
- 8:26I don't know what's happening with Mateta.
- 8:27And are we going to bring anybody in?
- 8:30Who can we bring in?
- 8:31We don't have the dough to bring anybody in.
- 8:33Don't forget we're still building a stadium.
- 8:36So who's going to pay for that?
- 8:37Do you think Paris going to pay for it?
- 8:38It's got no doubt.
- 8:39So, yeah, just let's just remember where we are, who we are, what we are, and before anyone comes back and says, oh, you know, we won a European trophy, we won three trophies.
- 8:51Listen, we finished 17th in the league.
- 8:54That's what we can be judged on, the cup.
- 8:57The cup is all a lottery, really.
- 9:00Right.
- 9:00We won the FA cup.
- 9:01Great.
- 9:03That made us enter the Community Shield.
- 9:05Fantastic.
- 9:06We won that.
- 9:07And then we won a Europa Conference league, which was pretty dreadful.
- 9:13In the qualifying rounds.
- 9:14We scraped through and in the end, yeah, we won it, but we finished 17th and we just about stayed up.
- 9:21For me, Crystal palace is a club with a business model that has to stay in the Premier League.
- 9:27That's all it has to do.
- 9:29If it wins a cup here and there.
- 9:31Fantastic.
- 9:32But don't think that Crystal palace are going to push on.
- 9:36Did Leicester push on?
- 9:38No, they sold.
- 9:41They sold mares, they sold Drink water, they.
- 9:45So they sold the fellow plays in midfield, Culte Coney.
- 9:54Yeah, the filler that went to Chelsea, they sold all their good players, Danny Simpson, they sold them all.
- 9:59So, yeah, don't expect Crystal palace to suddenly be a top six club because it's not going to happen.
- 10:05So get it out your head.
- 10:07Just be happy that we play in the Premier League and we've played there for the last 12 seasons.
- 10:11That is a huge achievement for Crystal Palace Football Club.
- 10:14So be happy.
- 10:15Just be happy.
- 10:18One of the things I wanted to talk about is the refereeing at the start of this season.
- 10:22I don't know about you, but did anybody see the Manchester United game?
- 10:26The Maguire handball?
- 10:28If he does that anywhere else on the pitch, it's handball, right?
- 10:32He put his hands in front of his body and he pushed the ball into the penalty box.
- 10:38I don't know.
- 10:39There was a pass or he finished.
- 10:41I can't remember what happened.
- 10:42But it was handball and the referee didn't give it because.
- 10:46That's right.
- 10:46Maguire's shot was deflected into the net.
- 10:49So the referee gave the goal.
- 10:50If Maguire does that anywhere else on the pitch, it's handball.
- 10:53I.
- 10:53I just did not understand that decision.
- 10:56So let me know what you think about that, please, because that was scandalous for me.
- 11:00It was amble all day long.
- 11:02And lastly, those of you that are on Twitter, Twitter, Palace.
- 11:09Twitter can be a fiery place.
- 11:11It can be very, very toxic.
- 11:13And some of the opinions on there, I.
- 11:16Listen, like I said, at this top of the show, football is about opinions.
- 11:20And I get it, but it's.
- 11:24I don't know what you want the club to be.
- 11:29I.
- 11:30I really don't.
- 11:30I understand ambition, but we have to realize our limitations.
- 11:35So those of you on Twitter.
- 11:37I'm on Twitter, Team of the 80s.
- 11:40You can find me on there.
- 11:41You can debate with me on there.
- 11:43I'm also on Instagram and TikTok.
- 11:46So, yeah, let me know your opinions, let me know your comments, and I'll see you next week.
- 11:52All right?
- 11:53So come on, you.
