- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05With me is Siobhan Simpson, Head of SA Unit Trusts at 91,
- 0:09on the day that 91 has listed two actively managed exchange-traded funds on the JSC.
- 0:14First of all, Siobhan, congratulations.
- 0:16And before we get to the details of the funds themselves, why now after 35 years?
- 0:23Thanks, Lindsay, and good to be here this morning.
- 0:25You know our business really, really well.
- 0:28So I...
- 0:28I'm sure you can actually appreciate that this listing now brings those 35 years of
- 0:35active experience that you talk about
- 0:37into a listed accessible format.
- 0:38Our goal is always to help clients stay diversified, liquid, invested, and even in
- 0:44difficult times.
- 0:46So we really are agnostic about what wrapper the client wants to use to really
- 0:51gain access to our expertise.
- 0:53For us, It's another way 91 is evolving to suit investor needs.
- 0:57And this time, just bringing our active edge to the listed market.
- 1:00It really is, there's much more exciting things to come as well.
- 1:03This is just the start.
- 1:05We're not only launching in South Africa.
- 1:07The launch is part of our global plan.
- 1:09We're starting here in South Africa, where obviously 91's roots run really deep.
- 1:14So that made perfect sense for us.
- 1:16But these listings mark the first of the beginning of a broader international
- 1:22rollout with launches in the US.
- 1:24Frankfurt and London to follow soon and then locally also some more for us next
- 1:27year.
- 1:27Okay I'll put that down in my diary because that means I'm going to be
- 1:32speaking to you much more often in the future Siobhan.
- 1:34Now you kindly sent me a press release and I saw the phrase evolving client needs.
- 1:39Is this listing or are these listings as a result of clients saying this is what we
- 1:45want because of what is happening globally for
- 1:47example?
- 1:49So in part yes Lindsay and it's really to broaden our reach.
- 1:51So I think...
- 1:52You know, ETFs have been around for a long period of time.
- 1:56A lot of people recognize them really in the passive space.
- 2:00And actively managed ETFs are really an evolution from that.
- 2:05They're dynamic.
- 2:06They're actively managed ones.
- 2:07Our investment teams are obviously trying to outperform an index based on their
- 2:12research.
- 2:12So, really, it's about having an active option now in the ETF space.
- 2:19There's been an increase in the number of alternatives that you can buy, the number
- 2:24of actively managed ETFs.
- 2:26And then really it's the investors.
- 2:28It's attractive for a different set of investors.
- 2:30The ease of access, low minimums make ETFs appealing for a new generation.
- 2:35And I think sometimes we think it's about age and a younger generation.
- 2:40And it's not only about that.
- 2:41We've all become used to real-time experiences, whether we're shopping,
- 2:48banking, managing our lives on an app.
- 2:50And actively managed ETFs bring that accessibility to investing,
- 2:52allowing clients to see and manage their investments in a way that feels familiar
- 2:58and in step with the times, really.
- 3:00What's happening globally, talking about being in step with the times?
- 3:02Let's look at the global picture when it comes to actively managed ETFs.
- 3:06Because when I think of an ETF, and I think a lot of other people are the same,
- 3:11they think of a passive investment.
- 3:13You put your money in, you take your money out, and that's the end of it.
- 3:15Clearly not the case with the actively managed offering.
- 3:19Yes.
- 3:20So like you say, ETFs, I think, have that traditional passive mindset.
- 3:24But the ETF industry globally is $18 trillion,
- 3:28and it's obviously expected to reach about $25 trillion in the next three to four
- 3:32years.
- 3:33And active ETFs are actually the fastest growing segment of that ETF market.
- 3:37More than half the launches last year were active strategies globally.
- 3:41And like you say, it combines the benefits of the transparency, the efficiency of the
- 3:48wrapper together with...
- 3:50actually being able to outperform an index.
- 3:51In South Africa, passive ETFs have been around for years,
- 3:54but active ETFs were only allowed in 2022.
- 3:59And active ETFs in South Africa are only 6% of the overall ETF market.
- 4:03So a lot of room for growth in the space.
- 4:05Right, let's get to the products themselves now.
- 4:07Tell us about the two ETFs that you've launched.
- 4:11So we're starting with two income ETFs, one local, one global.
- 4:15The first is 91 Diversified Income.
- 4:18And it's a RAN-based Reg 28 compliant portfolio and focused on generating
- 4:24reliable income living capital.
- 4:26It's a multi-asset income solution diversified across South Africa and a
- 4:30little bit of offshore,
- 4:32a yield of nearly 9% at the moment.
- 4:33So a nice tick up above cash.
- 4:36And then on the global side, it's 91 global diversified income.
- 4:41It's a RAN feeder into the global US dollar income fund.
- 4:46And really for clients wanting to get offshore, taking money.
- 4:51offshore into a fee to dollar, but not wanting to go into the markets yet.
- 4:55So a yield of just below 5% and for investors who want diversified global
- 5:02exposure, but not into the market.
- 5:04When you said global diversified income, I immediately thought of interviews that
- 5:08I've done regularly with the fund manager
- 5:10for the Global Diversified Income Fund.
- 5:11Now, the question here is that why suddenly actively manage ETFs?
- 5:15How do they complement the existing suite of products that you have.
- 5:20Lindsay, both of these products are available in a Unitrust format.
- 5:24So this is just a different wrapper.
- 5:26It's the manufacturing, the underlying manufacturing is the same.
- 5:29It's just the wrapper that some clients will choose to access the expertise in is
- 5:36different.
- 5:36That's really what this is, allowing a different set of investors to access our
- 5:40expertise.
- 5:42Are you expecting a different set of investors to take up this offering quite
- 5:46enthusiastically?
- 5:48Is that what you hope, obviously?
- 5:50Oh, we definitely hope that.
- 5:52We believe in the underlying manufacturing capabilities within our business, globally
- 5:55integrated teams.
- 5:57And I think that's why we want to get this active expertise to as many people as
- 6:00possible and give them access.
- 6:02Siobhan, thank you very much for your time.
