- 0:24Speaker 1: read skills?
- 0:25Speaker 2: You don't want to want You don't want that answer
- 0:26Speaker 2: I've seen in the comments. You don't want that answer.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I want to know.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Unless you want to be done with the responsibility of it.
- 0:32Speaker 2: You don't want that answer in the chat. Who's better
- 0:35Speaker 2: at the ad rads?
- 0:37Speaker 1: I gotta redeem myself today. I'm back in studio and
- 0:40Speaker 1: I gotta be.
- 0:40Speaker 2: I don't know. I saw the comments last week.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I think the people decided.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I saw the YouTube comments last week.
- 0:46Speaker 1: And this is an ongoing This is an ongoing thing.
- 0:49Speaker 1: It's not over. It's not over. It to seven game series.
- 0:52Speaker 1: That was just game one.
- 0:53Speaker 2: So do I get a redemption shot for answering the phone?
- 0:55Speaker 1: You know you were terrible at that. You're horrible at it.
- 0:59Speaker 1: You're done? Evan Lazar, Alex Bark Patriots Catch twenty two.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Here with you for the next couple of hours. Back
- 1:05Speaker 1: in studio, back from the Senior Bowl. Had a really
- 1:08Speaker 1: fun trip down there to Mobile. We'll talk a little
- 1:11Speaker 1: bit of Senior Bowl leftovers today. I am sure a draft.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I know all you guys want to want to chat
- 1:16Speaker 1: with us about that I'm doing. I'm getting I'm getting
- 1:20Speaker 1: some headway with my draft prep right now. Between the
- 1:23Speaker 1: Senior Bowl and the Combine, it's usually a little bit
- 1:26Speaker 1: of a lull from a news perspective with the team,
- 1:29Speaker 1: and I really try to hammer the top fifty or
- 1:32Speaker 1: so so that I'm set up for the Combine in
- 1:35Speaker 1: a good spot. And I feel like I'm starting to
- 1:37Speaker 1: make some headway.
- 1:38Speaker 2: So I've got some recncy bias takes, bias players.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I've got some you know, just some draft takes that
- 1:45Speaker 1: in my mind. But I do want to talk a
- 1:46Speaker 1: little bit off the top here about some of the
- 1:50Speaker 1: coaching staff updates. We didn't talk about it last week
- 1:53Speaker 1: because we focused on the Senior Bowl, but a lot
- 1:56Speaker 1: of you know, Thomas Brown, Doug Moron, Todd Downing like
- 1:59Speaker 1: these high have happened either when I was in Mobile
- 2:02Speaker 1: or over the last week or so. So we'll get
- 2:04Speaker 1: to that. And I also have to get something off
- 2:06Speaker 1: my chest about this Super Bowl week, and I will
- 2:09Speaker 1: get to that here in a second as well, but
- 2:11Speaker 1: before we do, Hey, Patriots fans, if you want to
- 2:14Speaker 1: see Toyota's best offers, including those not seen on TV,
- 2:18Speaker 1: go to buy at toyota dot com. It's Toyota's official
- 2:21Speaker 1: website for deals from the official vehicle of the New
- 2:24Speaker 1: England Patriots, Toyota Let's go places and easy to drink,
- 2:28Speaker 1: easy to enjoy, but like the official beer sponsor of
- 2:31Speaker 1: the New England Patriots. Okay, So can I get this
- 2:33Speaker 1: off my chest real quick about the Super Bowl? And
- 2:36Speaker 1: you don't have to partake, because I'm gonna take a
- 2:39Speaker 1: little subtle jab at your station maybe in this rant.
- 2:41Speaker 1: But I just got to say, and this is not
- 2:46Speaker 1: about me being a butt hurt Patriots fan, that the
- 2:49Speaker 1: Chiefs are getting all these flowers this week. They're in
- 2:52Speaker 1: the Super Bowl, They're a dynasty. They deserve their flowers.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I just gotta be honest. I do not find it
- 3:00Speaker 1: at all entertaining to discuss Patriots Chiefs, Belichick, Reid, Kelsey, Gronk, Mahomes,
- 3:08Speaker 1: Brady and comparing the dynasties over and over and over
- 3:12Speaker 1: and over again. We did it yesterday on our show,
- 3:14Speaker 1: So it's not just your station, it's everywhere and right
- 3:18Speaker 1: now in this Super Bowl week, and just as a consumer,
- 3:21Speaker 1: I just don't think that it's entertaining. Like I don't
- 3:24Speaker 1: find any real entertainment value from comparing these two dynasties.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I don't understand why we have to constantly do it.
- 3:32Speaker 1: It's nauseating. There's other things to talk about in this
- 3:35Speaker 1: town right now. The Patriots offseason is in full swing.
- 3:39Speaker 1: They have a new head coach, They have a lot
- 3:41Speaker 1: to do roster wise, they have a high draft pick,
- 3:43Speaker 1: they have a lot of cap space and free agency.
- 3:46Speaker 1: The Celtics and the Calves played a great basketball game
- 3:49Speaker 1: last night. The Bruins I have no idea what's going
- 3:51Speaker 1: on with them in terms of which direction they're going
- 3:53Speaker 1: to go in, But they keep on sucking me back
- 3:56Speaker 1: in with games like last night and then throwing me
- 3:59Speaker 1: back out because they'll we lose again tonight with the
- 4:02Speaker 1: way that they're going.
- 4:03Speaker 2: But don't forget the right Sox were in like week
- 4:05Speaker 2: whatever of the.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah sure, and pictures and catchers as soon.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Right, it's probably like in a week or two.
- 4:11Speaker 1: You remember when like truck Day used to be like
- 4:13Speaker 1: a mask earlier this week. Yeah, I know it doesn't
- 4:16Speaker 1: matter anymore. My whole point about though, with the Chiefs
- 4:20Speaker 1: in the we don't have to do this constant comparison thing.
- 4:23Speaker 1: We don't. We don't have to do it, and I
- 4:25Speaker 1: feel like we do it for the main reason of
- 4:29Speaker 1: just trolling Patriots fans, because you know that Patriots fans
- 4:32Speaker 1: are just gonna get sensitive about it, and then you
- 4:34Speaker 1: just start trolling them about it, and you're trying to
- 4:36Speaker 1: incite that side of things, because in reality, it doesn't matter.
- 4:42Speaker 1: It's not gonna take away from either team. Whether you
- 4:44Speaker 1: think the Patriots run was better or the current Chiefs
- 4:47Speaker 1: run is better, it doesn't take away from either team.
- 4:49Speaker 1: It's just no one's gonna move. Everyone's going to have
- 4:52Speaker 1: their take on it. I just I don't understand why
- 4:55Speaker 1: it's such a big topic. I don't.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, look, even if the Chiefs do, Mahomes
- 5:00Speaker 2: would be at four, which is just over halfway to Brady.
- 5:03Speaker 2: So all right, you're just coming out of the locker room,
- 5:05Speaker 2: you know, the Patriots, and this is what gets lost
- 5:07Speaker 2: in the Mahomes Brady stuff. It's what gets lost in
- 5:09Speaker 2: the Patriots Chiefs stuff. Is sustainability and his longevity And
- 5:14Speaker 2: I know, oh longevity, merchant. You realize how hard it
- 5:17Speaker 2: is to have a longevity like career in the NFL.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I don't think people understand how difficult that is. So
- 5:24Speaker 2: even if the Chiefs win, like, congratulations, you matched pick one,
- 5:27Speaker 2: you matched oh one to four, you matched fourteenth to
- 5:29Speaker 2: nineteen or fourteen to eighteen, you matched one of those.
- 5:32Speaker 2: So you've got a whole other half assed the dynasty
- 5:34Speaker 2: to go right. So you know, but to your point,
- 5:39Speaker 2: what else are you talking about from this game? What
- 5:42Speaker 2: else are you gonna talk about? Like we did? But
- 5:44Speaker 2: we just did this? What we just did Chiefs Eagles
- 5:47Speaker 2: two years ago?
- 5:47Speaker 1: Okay, well that but that was my whole take about
- 5:50Speaker 1: the game in general, is that I just thought this
- 5:52Speaker 1: was the worst possible outcome. It was, it absolutely was,
- 5:55Speaker 1: But I just think that again, it just we keep
- 5:58Speaker 1: on having to come back to this comparison between the
- 6:01Speaker 1: Chiefs and the Patriots, and I just don't I don't
- 6:03Speaker 1: find it compelling, Like I don't, I don't find it compelling.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I think that there's really it's premature in a lot
- 6:09Speaker 1: of ways, like you just mentioned, but it's also just
- 6:12Speaker 1: significantly different. Like it's a different way, it's a different approach.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Like you have a coach and Andy Reid who is
- 6:18Speaker 1: a offensive minded players coach by most accounts, versus Bill Belichick,
- 6:23Speaker 1: who is the total antithesis of that. I just I
- 6:26Speaker 1: don't understand it. I think it's it's not Chiefs Catch
- 6:30Speaker 1: twenty two, right, I think I all have some Chiefs
- 6:33Speaker 1: sun filtered. It's not the ninety eight four five the
- 6:36Speaker 1: sports of the home of the Kansas City Chiefs, right, Like,
- 6:39Speaker 1: we got to move on. We all have to move
- 6:42Speaker 1: on and stop stop talking so much about the Chiefs.
- 6:45Speaker 2: That's the reality. It looks like, I'll give him this.
- 6:47Speaker 2: If you're there, you're getting talked about, and they're there,
- 6:49Speaker 2: and that's why we all have Chiefs fatigue because they
- 6:51Speaker 2: keep being there. Your boy Josh Allen could have prevented this.
- 6:54Speaker 1: He didn't know I wanted him.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson had his chance to prevent this. Mark Andrews
- 6:58Speaker 2: dropped that, but well, I guess he turned ball of
- 7:00Speaker 2: a couple times too. But like you know, the Bengals
- 7:02Speaker 2: could have prevented this. They didn't lose to the Patriots
- 7:04Speaker 2: in Week one. Right, everybody's had their chances. Maybe the
- 7:07Speaker 2: Patriots are in the mix next year, hopefully they're in
- 7:10Speaker 2: the mix of teams that can prevent this. I think
- 7:11Speaker 2: they're probably still a year or two away from that overall,
- 7:14Speaker 2: But like until somebody beats them, it's gonna keep being
- 7:16Speaker 2: a thing. So somebody's gotta beat these guys already got it.
- 7:19Speaker 1: It's not even about the Chiefs still, Like I don't
- 7:21Speaker 1: even care, Like it's not I'm not sensitive about the
- 7:23Speaker 1: Chiefs being good. Like, no, I understand what this is
- 7:26Speaker 1: what people talk. I don't think it's interesting.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Well, I think people felt this way about the Patriots,
- 7:30Speaker 2: Like the Patriots go back to Super Bowl and it's, oh,
- 7:32Speaker 2: we're gonna do Brady and Belichick Legacy talk again for
- 7:36Speaker 2: a week. Like I get it. I like you if
- 7:38Speaker 2: you're there that much. There's the fatigue that the Warriors.
- 7:41Speaker 2: We were all fatigued with the Warriors because they were
- 7:43Speaker 2: back there every year, and it's just that's what happens.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Felger did this. I don't know if you heard this
- 7:48Speaker 2: part of it yesterday, but I thought it was an
- 7:50Speaker 2: interesting conversation. Are dynasties good for sports? So?
- 7:56Speaker 1: And Felger's think a villain is good for sports.
- 7:58Speaker 2: A villain is good for sports with the villain and
- 8:00Speaker 2: does not equal with dynasty. And there's a tipping point there,
- 8:02Speaker 2: and I think they are and they aren't. I don't
- 8:06Speaker 2: think you can make a blanket statement about it, but
- 8:07Speaker 2: it's an interesting case that if you have one team
- 8:10Speaker 2: dominate the league for an extended period of time, is
- 8:13Speaker 2: that good or bad? You always hear this with like
- 8:15Speaker 2: yukon women's basketball, right, we heard it with the Patriots
- 8:18Speaker 2: for years, with the Patriots good for the sport? What
- 8:19Speaker 2: they were doing, what the Warriors were doing, Were they
- 8:22Speaker 2: good for the sport? You hear that with these teams,
- 8:25Speaker 2: and I think there is a tipping point where you
- 8:26Speaker 2: stop becoming a villain and there becomes a fatigue to it.
- 8:31Speaker 2: And it's you know, that's not to say I don't
- 8:33Speaker 2: like that the Patriots dynasty happened. I obviously loved it.
- 8:35Speaker 2: But that to me is the more interesting conversation this week.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Are the Chiefs good for the NFL? Like three years
- 8:41Speaker 2: and years, is Alabama football good for college football? And
- 8:44Speaker 2: you had all these people that were turned off by
- 8:45Speaker 2: college football because the same teams every year, and you
- 8:48Speaker 2: look at what happened this year when you've got new teams,
- 8:50Speaker 2: and it was a very exciting season. So that's the
- 8:52Speaker 2: more interesting conversation to me this week, you know, and
- 8:55Speaker 2: if the Chiefs lose, maybe that kind of changes it.
- 8:57Speaker 2: But like is it good and it's you don't want
- 9:01Speaker 2: teams to just be alternating good and bad, good and bad.
- 9:03Speaker 2: You want some sustained success because you want people to
- 9:05Speaker 2: be familiar with the elite teams. But I do think
- 9:08Speaker 2: there's a tipping point where again that fatigue kicks in.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, we spent nine minutes on this. That
- 9:13Speaker 1: was nine more minutes than I wanted to.
- 9:15Speaker 2: We are a football show, super Bowl, we should.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I just keep coming back to the same thing, and
- 9:22Speaker 1: I'll throw a little straight at your show, at your station,
- 9:25Speaker 1: which I listened to your your station a lot, Like
- 9:27Speaker 1: I'm a fan of your station, so this isn't me
- 9:29Speaker 1: coming at it like screw sports radio. I love it.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I listened to it all day in the car. But
- 9:35Speaker 1: the thing that I'm I come back to is as
- 9:38Speaker 1: in the car driving home from here yesterday, for forty
- 9:41Speaker 1: five minutes, they spend forty minutes talking Chiefs Patriots dynasty comparison,
- 9:47Speaker 1: I can't do it. I just I can't do it.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I can't do it. Well, yeah, if we wrap it
- 9:52Speaker 1: up all.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Because you didn't really answer it, I'm gonna throw question
- 9:54Speaker 2: Felger's question back at you. Yeah, our dynasty is good
- 9:57Speaker 2: for sports, our dynasty for like leagues.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I would say yes, because greatness is good. I think
- 10:05Speaker 1: if there's too much parody, then it brings how good
- 10:10Speaker 1: really are these teams down?
- 10:11Speaker 2: Can't be great without being a dynasty.
- 10:14Speaker 1: It depends on your definition. I guess of dynasty, but
- 10:18Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I would say three or more championships in a five
- 10:21Speaker 2: year span.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Okay, so I disagree with with that. I suppose maybe
- 10:25Speaker 1: a little bit, because I think you can be I
- 10:27Speaker 1: don't know if I would necessarily call it a dynasty.
- 10:30Speaker 1: But like, if you win multiple titles in like a decade, right,
- 10:34Speaker 1: like you're still a great team of that decade, is
- 10:38Speaker 1: that a dynasty? Like it could be broken up.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I think what I'm saying, I think you can be
- 10:43Speaker 2: great without being a dynasty. There have been great teams
- 10:46Speaker 2: that weren't dynasties, like I think one of the most
- 10:47Speaker 2: you know, look at the two thousand Ravens, and that
- 10:50Speaker 2: defense was great. I know that shortcoms on offense, that
- 10:52Speaker 2: defense was great. That team was a dynasty, and that's
- 10:54Speaker 2: still held up as an example of greatness, right, or
- 10:57Speaker 2: the you know who are some of the other teams
- 10:59Speaker 2: like a Super Bowl or even just went and kind
- 11:01Speaker 2: of disappeared. They lost. But the twenty fifteen Panthers, that
- 11:05Speaker 2: was a great football team. They had Cam Newton who
- 11:08Speaker 2: had one of the best quarterback seasons in recent memory.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Greg Olsen was awesome that year. That defense was amazing.
- 11:15Speaker 2: That was a great football team. Sure, obviously it was
- 11:18Speaker 2: not a dynasty. They didn't even win one, but you
- 11:20Speaker 2: can people will call that team great and they should.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Were they great?
- 11:26Speaker 2: I'm trying to think of a better example.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I don't know. I think that there are a lot
- 11:30Speaker 1: of teams that were like that. I have a great team.
- 11:34Speaker 1: That's not a dynasty. To me, it is like the
- 11:37Speaker 1: greatest show on turf. Right, They won one super.
- 11:39Speaker 2: That's true, they came up short. That's a better example
- 11:41Speaker 2: than I went to the Panthers.
- 11:42Speaker 1: They went to a second one. Obviously, as we know
- 11:44Speaker 1: very well. Yeah, they were in a dynasty in but
- 11:48Speaker 1: they're one of the best teams of all time.
- 11:50Speaker 2: All right, how I got another one for you? Yeah,
- 11:53Speaker 2: Kyle Shanahan forty nine ers.
- 11:55Speaker 1: No, they haven't won anything yet, so you.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Wouldn't say that's a great team.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Uh. I think they've had great teams, but they haven't won.
- 12:04Speaker 1: So there's they're not.
- 12:05Speaker 2: So this might like you can be great. You can
- 12:07Speaker 2: be great without being a dynasty. You can be great
- 12:09Speaker 2: like and so I yeah, you.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Might as swayed me, but that's you. You you tricked
- 12:12Speaker 1: me there.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I know I had to.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I had to say they were.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Great, honestly, honestly, greatest show on turf is a is
- 12:18Speaker 2: a perfect example of this. Who is who is the
- 12:21Speaker 2: greatest show on turf?
- 12:23Speaker 1: Really?
- 12:23Speaker 2: Haven't had a team like that that like kind of
- 12:25Speaker 2: hung around briefly. It was amazing for a short period
- 12:29Speaker 2: of time. Yeah, I don't know who would that be.
- 12:32Speaker 2: I mean, I get maybe if the Eagles lose this
- 12:36Speaker 2: one and then kind of fall off, but I don't
- 12:37Speaker 2: think they're gonna fall off, Like they have a ton
- 12:39Speaker 2: of talent.
- 12:39Speaker 1: It depends on how you view the Eagles in terms
- 12:42Speaker 1: of their regimes. Right, because Doug Peterson was the coach
- 12:44Speaker 1: of this team that won the Super Bowl, it was
- 12:46Speaker 1: Carson Wentz and Nick Foles that were the quarterbacks. So
- 12:49Speaker 1: the quarterback and the head coach for this iteration of
- 12:52Speaker 1: the Howie Roseman Eagles has is different, but it's still
- 12:55Speaker 1: Howie Roseman running the show. I would say, like a
- 12:57Speaker 1: lot of the players are still the super Bowl appearances
- 12:59Speaker 1: in a ears, like even if they win this one,
- 13:03Speaker 1: three super Bowl appearances in eight years, you win too.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Is that a dynasty? Know? Is that a great run? Yes? Absolutely? Yeah,
- 13:10Speaker 2: So that's what's good, Like, that's what's good. You want
- 13:13Speaker 2: a bunch of teams like that. Yeah, But I think
- 13:15Speaker 2: when you get to the Chiefs or again to go
- 13:18Speaker 2: back to the Warriors or the you know, Alabama football,
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yukon women's basketball, like that's where I think you maybe
- 13:25Speaker 2: start to lose people because there is an element of
- 13:27Speaker 2: all right, we know what happens. There's an element of predictability.
- 13:30Speaker 2: And not to take anything away from anybody who's a
- 13:32Speaker 2: part of those teams, like like the Patriots, Like again,
- 13:34Speaker 2: I love that it happened as a Patriots fan. The
- 13:36Speaker 2: people were part of those teams be proud of it.
- 13:38Speaker 2: They should not feel like they let the sport down.
- 13:40Speaker 2: But it's just it's an interesting just juxtaposition.
- 13:43Speaker 1: So the one thing that I always look at in
- 13:46Speaker 1: the Super Bowl.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Is, oh, from the YouTube comments, Legion to Boom Seahawks
- 13:50Speaker 2: is exactly the team we were looking for.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Sure what I They're very similar to the Greatest Show
- 13:55Speaker 1: on Yeah, exactly one one went to another didn't win,
- 13:59Speaker 1: probably the last team that The what I always look
- 14:01Speaker 1: at with the Super Bowl matchup is the how did
- 14:06Speaker 1: we get here? And what can we learn from it? Yep,
- 14:08Speaker 1: in terms of roster building and team building, because that's
- 14:10Speaker 1: what we all all both of us nerd out about
- 14:13Speaker 1: twenty four to seven. So the Chiefs model is, in
- 14:19Speaker 1: my opinion, you can't expect to replicate because you have
- 14:23Speaker 1: the greatest, one of the greatest quarterbacks of all Like
- 14:25Speaker 1: the Patriots, We're we're not gonna luck into Patrick Mahomes, right,
- 14:29Speaker 1: That's just not gonna happen. Drake may might be great,
- 14:32Speaker 1: he's not gonna be Patrick Mahomes. He's not gonna be
- 14:34Speaker 1: Tom Brady, right, So do you have that element of
- 14:37Speaker 1: it with the Chiefs. With the Eagles, I look at
- 14:40Speaker 1: a much more replicable model of how they've done this,
- 14:44Speaker 1: and I think Howie Roseman is one of the best
- 14:47Speaker 1: general managers in sports right now because of the way
- 14:51Speaker 1: that he has his tentacles on every single avenue of
- 14:55Speaker 1: roster building, every single way of finding talent. Trades, free agency, draft, undrafted,
- 15:02Speaker 1: free agency, like they do it all in Philadelphia. They
- 15:05Speaker 1: traded for a J. Brown, They drafted blue chip players
- 15:10Speaker 1: at the top of the draft from big time programs,
- 15:13Speaker 1: you know, Georgia Alabama with DeVante Smith, free agency with
- 15:17Speaker 1: sa Kwon Barkley. Right like, they went out and they added, added,
- 15:20Speaker 1: added in all avenues around a good quarterback. But I
- 15:24Speaker 1: wouldn't call Jalen Hurts a great quarterback, right He's a
- 15:27Speaker 1: good He's a good quarterback, and he's good in that
- 15:30Speaker 1: offense and what they ask him to do. And in
- 15:33Speaker 1: a lot of ways. You know, we always talk about
- 15:35Speaker 1: the net neutral quarterback or making it easier on the
- 15:38Speaker 1: quarterback in general. I know people hate that term, the
- 15:41Speaker 1: net neutral quarterback when we use that one, but the
- 15:44Speaker 1: just making it easier on the quarterback in general. And
- 15:46Speaker 1: I look at what Philadelphia has done, and I think
- 15:49Speaker 1: they've done a masterclass of that. Excellent Hurts, excellent building
- 15:52Speaker 1: the offensive line. Now, a lot of that pre dates
- 15:56Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts. You know, Lane Johnson was there before Jalen Hurts.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Remember, they didn't go through a period where they were
- 16:01Speaker 2: in the quarterback carousel. They thought they had their franchise guy.
- 16:04Speaker 2: They drafted Jalen Hurts as a plan B. Franchise guy
- 16:07Speaker 2: didn't work out. So they were always building it around
- 16:11Speaker 2: like there was no in between period. There was no
- 16:15Speaker 2: what for the Patriots would be like twenty to twenty
- 16:17Speaker 2: twenty three.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Right, So, Lane Johnson's a future Hall of Famer in
- 16:21Speaker 1: my book. He is a fourth overall pick I think
- 16:24Speaker 1: in his draft, but that was quite a bit of go.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Jordan Mylotta is really the find. You know. He's a
- 16:30Speaker 1: former rugby player that converts to NFL football and was
- 16:34Speaker 1: a sixth or seventh round pick, late day three guy, Yeah,
- 16:37Speaker 1: something like that because of his Was he the pathway player?
- 16:41Speaker 1: I don't think so. I think he was a draft pick.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I think he was drafting the seventh round. I want
- 16:46Speaker 1: to say so. Jordan Mylott is now one of the
- 16:48Speaker 1: best left tackles.
- 16:49Speaker 2: In seventh round, but he was a pathway player.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Okay, I didn't know you could be both seventh round pick.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Turns out to be the best left tackle in football.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Are one of the best, probably not the best, but
- 16:59Speaker 1: top five. Yeah, at the position that that right there
- 17:02Speaker 1: is fantastic. Look at their center position. Jason kelce retires,
- 17:07Speaker 1: one of the best centers of our era. Yep, and
- 17:09Speaker 1: uh and they handed over to Cam Jurgens, who is
- 17:12Speaker 1: really good too. Not Jason Kelcey, but he good player.
- 17:16Speaker 1: They haven't really missed a beat there. Uh. So you
- 17:18Speaker 1: look at the way that they've built their offensive line,
- 17:20Speaker 1: McKay Beckton, you know, taking a flyer on McKay Beckton,
- 17:23Speaker 1: putting him at guard instead of tackle. That's really worked
- 17:26Speaker 1: out for them. That that's really paid dividends. Uh. Saquon
- 17:29Speaker 1: Barkley at running back, free agency, signing AJ Brown a trade,
- 17:33Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard, second round pick, DeVante Smith first round pick.
- 17:37Speaker 1: That offense and the way that offense is built is
- 17:40Speaker 1: the mechano me, like, that's the that's the dream is
- 17:42Speaker 1: you have all great protection, great blocking, great running back,
- 17:47Speaker 1: great skill players all around.
- 17:49Speaker 2: The dream for you is a great running back. Can
- 17:51Speaker 2: we clip that so I have it?
- 17:53Speaker 1: Well? The point is is that really, what does Jalen
- 17:56Speaker 1: Hurts have to do? And I don't mean that he
- 17:58Speaker 1: doesn't do anything. But I'm just saying that's about as
- 18:01Speaker 1: good of a situation as any quarterback could be put in it.
- 18:04Speaker 2: It's not so much what does he have to do,
- 18:06Speaker 2: but it's paint by number, so he doesn't have to
- 18:09Speaker 2: overextend himself right right. The whole thing. Remember with Drake
- 18:11Speaker 2: May this year, me saying, like his whole game, it
- 18:14Speaker 2: felt like he was playing with an inner monologue of fine,
- 18:16Speaker 2: I guess I'll do it myself. Yes, where when you
- 18:20Speaker 2: have to do that constantly, bad things are gonna happen. Yeah,
- 18:24Speaker 2: So Jalen Hurts can for lack of a better word,
- 18:27Speaker 2: he can almost relax. Yeah, he can just go out
- 18:30Speaker 2: there and kind of let loose and he doesn't have
- 18:33Speaker 2: so much to worry about because you know, his clock's
- 18:36Speaker 2: not getting sped up, he knows the receivers are in
- 18:38Speaker 2: the right spot. He knows that you know, they can
- 18:40Speaker 2: go to the run game if they need to do it.
- 18:42Speaker 2: And it just takes so much off his mind mentally
- 18:45Speaker 2: and physically. He's not taking a bunch of hits behind
- 18:46Speaker 2: that line that it allows him to play a lot
- 18:49Speaker 2: more freely.
- 18:50Speaker 1: And allows him to hit the easy button a lot
- 18:53Speaker 1: in terms of scheme and what they do. You know,
- 18:55Speaker 1: they do a lot of early down RPO stuff. They
- 18:57Speaker 1: do a lot of zone read and things like that,
- 19:00Speaker 1: where Jalen Hurts has just put in these situations where
- 19:03Speaker 1: he has a lot of answers and puts the defense
- 19:05Speaker 1: in a lot of schematic binds and really makes it
- 19:07Speaker 1: easy for the quarterback. When you have a really good
- 19:11Speaker 1: play action passing game, a really good RPO package for
- 19:15Speaker 1: a quarterback like Jalen Hurts, not a lot of the
- 19:18Speaker 1: game gets put on him in obvious dropback situations where
- 19:22Speaker 1: it's like third and eight and he's got to make
- 19:23Speaker 1: a play. Ye you know, you maybe can whittle that
- 19:26Speaker 1: down to four or five plays a game where it's
- 19:29Speaker 1: truly on his shoulders to go out there and make
- 19:31Speaker 1: a play. And then obviously it helps when you have
- 19:33Speaker 1: aj Brown and DeVante Smith on the outside and God
- 19:36Speaker 1: Hear too to help him with all that stuff. But
- 19:39Speaker 1: I see with the Eagles, and you watch them in
- 19:41Speaker 1: the NFC Championship game too, how much they rpo that
- 19:45Speaker 1: defense to death and they are just able to really
- 19:48Speaker 1: just let Jalen Hurts kind of be a point guard,
- 19:51Speaker 1: like he's just kind of a sidecar to what they're
- 19:55Speaker 1: really doing offensively, and in a lot of ways, I
- 19:59Speaker 1: would say Drake May has a higher ceiling than Jalen
- 20:02Speaker 1: Hurts as a passer. I think Drake May has more
- 20:04Speaker 1: physical talent in terms of his throwing ability, So maybe
- 20:08Speaker 1: he doesn't need all that help. But I just why not, right, Like,
- 20:11Speaker 1: why not build the offense around that and why not
- 20:15Speaker 1: have that much help. It's obviously takes a while to
- 20:18Speaker 1: build out, but I think the way the Eagles do it,
- 20:21Speaker 1: the way that they allocate their resources, the way they
- 20:24Speaker 1: spend over the cap, the way that they bring in
- 20:27Speaker 1: guys in all avenues, I think if you're trying to
- 20:30Speaker 1: model yourself after one of these franchises, it's absolutely the
- 20:33Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles. And what Howie Roseman's done with Dad in mind,
- 20:37Speaker 1: I want to segue to the coaching staff a little
- 20:39Speaker 1: bit and talk some patriots. We'll take some emails, Oh, take.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Some talk about this tremendous defense they've built Phillies.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Yeah, now, I'm not that interested.
- 20:48Speaker 2: The defense is unbelievable.
- 20:49Speaker 1: It's good defense. I don't know if it's unbelievable, it's
- 20:51Speaker 1: good defense.
- 20:52Speaker 2: That front's awesome.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Man, come on, it's good front. They've done a nice
- 20:57Speaker 1: job and obviously Vig Fangio has really put it all
- 20:59Speaker 1: together for them. I would say that, you know, some
- 21:02Speaker 1: of the bigger players that have stood out to me
- 21:04Speaker 1: from the Eagles though, is in their back end. You know,
- 21:06Speaker 1: Quinjon Mitchell has been an awesome rookie for them. Cooper
- 21:10Speaker 1: dejen a guy that all of us liked a lot
- 21:12Speaker 1: in the draft, has been very very good. And Zach Bond,
- 21:15Speaker 1: who's going to be a free agent, has really put
- 21:17Speaker 1: it all together in terms of the middle of the
- 21:19Speaker 1: field for them at linebacker. You know, can cover, can
- 21:22Speaker 1: cover a lot of space from that linebacker position, whether
- 21:25Speaker 1: it's dropping back in coverage or it's going sideline to
- 21:28Speaker 1: sideline against the run. And obviously they have the guys
- 21:31Speaker 1: up front, but they always kind of had the guys
- 21:33Speaker 1: up front. To me, Yeah, they always had had good
- 21:36Speaker 1: defensive lines in Philadelphia, even going back to the when
- 21:39Speaker 1: the Patriots played them in the Super Bowl in twenty eighteen.
- 21:42Speaker 1: But they've now evolved, I think, to having a much
- 21:45Speaker 1: stronger secondary, so that yeah, they have a great well.
- 21:48Speaker 2: I guess my point is, you know, you went, you
- 21:50Speaker 2: broke down how they built the offense. Gadian Mitchell first
- 21:53Speaker 2: round pick, Jalen Carter first round pick. But you have
- 21:55Speaker 2: you know Zach Bond, who was a fine free agent.
- 22:00Speaker 2: You know you have to It's that same thing with
- 22:02Speaker 2: Josh Sweat was kind of a fine Where did he
- 22:05Speaker 2: get He was like, what third fourth round pick?
- 22:07Speaker 1: I have to look at? I always get him in
- 22:09Speaker 1: Montese Sweat confused.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Montes first round pick. Check that. But it's like, by
- 22:13Speaker 2: the way, Josh Sweat free agent, you're not gonna get you.
- 22:18Speaker 2: There needs to be a balance. You can't build the
- 22:21Speaker 2: entire thing through splash and free agency. You can't build
- 22:24Speaker 2: a fourth round pick eighteen. So he's been around for
- 22:27Speaker 2: a while well because draft and develop. Yeah, and I
- 22:30Speaker 2: know people probably don't want to hear that phrase as
- 22:31Speaker 2: it relates to the Patriots, but they were able to
- 22:33Speaker 2: hit on first round picks immediately. They were able to
- 22:36Speaker 2: get mid round guys to grow into their roles. They
- 22:38Speaker 2: were able to get big name free agents to step
- 22:40Speaker 2: in and make plays, and they were able to find
- 22:41Speaker 2: guys in free agency too. That's how you're gonna do it.
- 22:44Speaker 2: So as we go through this offseason and talk about
- 22:46Speaker 2: like you know, if the Patriots are gonna really accelerate this,
- 22:49Speaker 2: It's not just gonna be all right. We signed Josh
- 22:52Speaker 2: Sweat and Tech McMillan free agency, and we drafted you know,
- 22:55Speaker 2: Will Carter and Jayan Higgins at the top of the draft. Right,
- 22:59Speaker 2: you are going to have to find guys in free
- 23:02Speaker 2: agency in the draft. That shouldn't be your plan. You're
- 23:04Speaker 2: playing going in shouldn't be all right, We're gonna get
- 23:06Speaker 2: all these sleepers. But like, you have to be able
- 23:08Speaker 2: to do that. Belichick was amazing at that. Guys like
- 23:12Speaker 2: Kavin Noy's a trade but I'd consider him like a fine, right, Yeah,
- 23:15Speaker 2: Vin Noy was a guy that was a fine. Getting
- 23:18Speaker 2: Wes Welker in the nature they did was a fine.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Guys like that, You're you're still going to need to
- 23:24Speaker 2: be able to do that in order to really hit
- 23:26Speaker 2: that apex. If you want to speed this thing up,
- 23:28Speaker 2: and you have to be able to focus on both
- 23:30Speaker 2: sides of the ball. You can't just hammer offense. You
- 23:33Speaker 2: can't just hammer defense. There needs to be a balance,
- 23:35Speaker 2: and you hope you get guys, you know, with premium
- 23:38Speaker 2: assets that can carry their side and give you that
- 23:41Speaker 2: time to spread the assets out more.
- 23:43Speaker 1: And I also think at this point with the Eagles too,
- 23:45Speaker 1: you get to a point where you're such a well
- 23:47Speaker 1: oiled machine, and we know this with the Patriots as well,
- 23:49Speaker 1: that now they can take some risks, like Jalen Carter
- 23:53Speaker 1: was a risk right where they especially where they drafted him.
- 23:55Speaker 1: You know, he felt these probably should have been the
- 23:57Speaker 1: number one overall pick in his draft, and he fell
- 23:59Speaker 1: because the off field stuff. But that was a risk
- 24:02Speaker 1: like that could have gone either way, and if you
- 24:04Speaker 1: don't have the infrastructure to support that kind of player,
- 24:06Speaker 1: then that could go the bad way, right like that,
- 24:08Speaker 1: and maybe he's you know, not on the team anymore
- 24:10Speaker 1: because he gets into another situation and now he's one
- 24:15Speaker 1: of the best defensive tackles in the league, and that
- 24:18Speaker 1: goes a long way too. With some of these flyers
- 24:21Speaker 1: that teams like the Eagles can afford to take, I
- 24:24Speaker 1: would also put in a much different way, but in
- 24:27Speaker 1: a similar category, like paying a running back like Sakwon
- 24:31Speaker 1: Barkley is a luxury item, and you can do that
- 24:34Speaker 1: when you're a team like the Eagles. When we talk
- 24:36Speaker 1: about the Patriots moving forward, like this is why I
- 24:39Speaker 1: won't even entertain a running back. When we discuss running
- 24:42Speaker 1: backs like Ashon Dentji, I won't entertain it because you
- 24:45Speaker 1: can't be taking luxury items when you're the Patriots. You
- 24:49Speaker 1: need to be taking players that are foundational elements of
- 24:52Speaker 1: this team. Dropping Sakwon Barley because you've made fun of
- 24:55Speaker 1: me for saying great running back earlier. Dropping Saquon Barkley
- 25:00Speaker 1: into that team is how you maximize a great running back.
- 25:03Speaker 1: That's how you truly have a great running back. Makes sense? Well,
- 25:07Speaker 1: I Missian McCaffrey with San Francisco forty nine ers like
- 25:10Speaker 1: it's the same situation.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Also meant that you acknowledging that running backs can be
- 25:13Speaker 2: great instead of saying they're all interchangeable.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I think they can be great, but I don't think
- 25:17Speaker 1: they move the needle unless they're put into situations like
- 25:21Speaker 1: McCaffrey and San Francisco, Barkley with the Eagles, I mean, right,
- 25:27Speaker 1: another good one, Derek Henry with the Ravens. And that
- 25:30Speaker 1: is where I feel like the league is caught up
- 25:31Speaker 1: in understanding they don't have zero value, but they just
- 25:35Speaker 1: have to be put in situations where they can make
- 25:38Speaker 1: an impact, like like the examples that be just named
- 25:41Speaker 1: all right, let's talk a little coaching staff and then
- 25:44Speaker 1: I will open it up to your phones eight five five,
- 25:47Speaker 1: pats five hundred. We got plenty of emails coming in
- 25:49Speaker 1: as well at podcasts at Patriots dot com. I want
- 25:54Speaker 1: to start with Thomas Brown. I think you know, and
- 25:58Speaker 1: again I should put this out there. This is all
- 26:01Speaker 1: reportedly that none of this is official, All these titles
- 26:04Speaker 1: or reports, none of it's official yet with the coordinators,
- 26:08Speaker 1: just the coordinators, So we're all going off of reports
- 26:11Speaker 1: here in terms of titles. But it sounds like Thomas Brown,
- 26:13Speaker 1: who is the interim coach for the Bears last year,
- 26:16Speaker 1: interim play caller for the Bears last year as well
- 26:19Speaker 1: midway through the season taking over there in Chicago, has
- 26:23Speaker 1: been an offensive coordinator, has been an assistant head coach,
- 26:25Speaker 1: has been an interim head coach, is going to be
- 26:28Speaker 1: the past game coordinator and tight ends coach for the
- 26:31Speaker 1: Patriots under Josh McDaniels and Mike Rable on the offensive
- 26:35Speaker 1: side of the ball. What I'm interested about with this
- 26:38Speaker 1: Thomas Brown higher is which tree of West Coast the
- 26:43Speaker 1: offense that he's been involved in is he tapping into.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Is he trying to bring Shanahan McVay elements from his
- 26:51Speaker 1: RAMS days with Sean McVay, Or is he trying to
- 26:54Speaker 1: bring Frank Reich Andy Reid elements from his time in
- 26:57Speaker 1: Carolina with Frank Reich. There's only one year barely with
- 27:01Speaker 1: Frank Reig. I don't even think he made it the
- 27:02Speaker 1: full season right in Carolina Thomas Brown, so I don't
- 27:06Speaker 1: know how much experience he really has in that. But
- 27:10Speaker 1: the one element that I look at with Thomas Brown
- 27:13Speaker 1: that I'm hoping for is that he is going to
- 27:15Speaker 1: bring some of those Kansas City, Philadelphia Frank like Andy
- 27:19Speaker 1: Reid elements to this offense. Because I do think that
- 27:23Speaker 1: Drake May is at his best in the gun I
- 27:26Speaker 1: don't think he's at his real comfort level as an
- 27:30Speaker 1: under center quarterback. When you talk about a lot of
- 27:32Speaker 1: the elements that you bring in from a Shanahan West
- 27:35Speaker 1: Coast offense, you're talking a lot of under center elements,
- 27:38Speaker 1: you know, outside zone boogleg motion, play action, that kind
- 27:43Speaker 1: of stuff. I would like to see a lot more of,
- 27:46Speaker 1: like the Philadelphia Kansas City version of RPO, you know,
- 27:51Speaker 1: gun run, that sort of thing with the motion and
- 27:54Speaker 1: window dressing than the McVeigh offense necessarily, and I am
- 27:59Speaker 1: hoping that maybe that's where Thomas Brown comes in with
- 28:03Speaker 1: Josh McDaniels. And we've heard a lot of Josh mcdaniels's
- 28:06Speaker 1: offense is gonna bow all the doors all of our
- 28:09Speaker 1: socks off here with all the new innovations and things
- 28:12Speaker 1: like that. But what are your thoughts on Thomas Brown
- 28:14Speaker 1: and what he's gonna bring to the table here, So
- 28:17Speaker 1: just you.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Know, to what you said, I based on the other
- 28:19Speaker 2: people they've hired and talked to, doesn't it seem like
- 28:21Speaker 2: it's going to be the Frank rag Andy Reid direction
- 28:24Speaker 2: of things. So, yeah, the report right now is that
- 28:28Speaker 2: Thomas Brown's gonna be the pass game coordinator. Yeah, And
- 28:31Speaker 2: so I wonder if and I like that they're doing that.
- 28:34Speaker 2: He's the first, you know, pass or run game cordinator
- 28:37Speaker 2: in the history of the Patriots. They've never done that before.
- 28:40Speaker 2: If he's going to be the one kind of helping
- 28:43Speaker 2: to tie the traditional McDade like tie that stuff to
- 28:46Speaker 2: the traditional McDaniel stuff, and if he's going to kind
- 28:49Speaker 2: of end up being we use this term a couple
- 28:51Speaker 2: of weeks ago, that translator right for for Drake may
- 28:54Speaker 2: to help tie the two together. So yeah, I think
- 28:57Speaker 2: he's a good hire. I think my big reaction was, like,
- 29:01Speaker 2: he has an impressive resume, and obviously the last few
- 29:04Speaker 2: places he's been it hasn't worked out. But by all
- 29:06Speaker 2: accounts that was it didn't work out, Like it wasn't
- 29:09Speaker 2: because of him that it didn't work out, right, So
- 29:12Speaker 2: this is a guy that you would think is gonna
- 29:14Speaker 2: have another shot at being a coordinator soon and for
- 29:18Speaker 2: for all we talked about when we did the Mike
- 29:20Speaker 2: Rabel Ben Johnson thing about you know, you don't want
- 29:23Speaker 2: a coordinator that's gonna jump ship right away. You want
- 29:26Speaker 2: you know, and McDaniels gives you that stability. The flip
- 29:29Speaker 2: side of that is when you have a coordinator that's
- 29:31Speaker 2: kind of a roadblock, it can be harder to hire
- 29:34Speaker 2: positional coaches because they know there's no room to move
- 29:38Speaker 2: up internally and you can always go elsewhere and get
- 29:40Speaker 2: a new job at who likes to move right there?
- 29:42Speaker 2: You know there's room to move up internally. So to
- 29:45Speaker 2: get a guy like Thomas Brown, who has that runway
- 29:49Speaker 2: ahead of him, and it's not down the road, it's
- 29:51Speaker 2: right there, has that runaway ahead of him, to get
- 29:53Speaker 2: him to come here. With Josh McDaniels in place, I
- 29:56Speaker 2: think speaks very strongly to Mike Vrabel's program. It tells
- 29:59Speaker 2: you that this is a program what he's selling, whatever
- 30:02Speaker 2: it is he's saying in these meetings that guys want,
- 30:06Speaker 2: and I think to Drake it speaks to Drake may
- 30:08Speaker 2: Two like guys want to be here. Guys feel like
- 30:11Speaker 2: this is a good situation and even if that immediate
- 30:13Speaker 2: advancement isn't in front of them internally, they still feel
- 30:17Speaker 2: like this is the right place for them to be.
- 30:19Speaker 2: So I think being able to hire a guy like
- 30:21Speaker 2: Thomas Brown and as impressive as Thomas Brown is for
- 30:24Speaker 2: who he is and his resume and all of that,
- 30:27Speaker 2: I think speaks to what Mike Grabil is pitching and
- 30:31Speaker 2: coaches and players are different. But is that something that's
- 30:33Speaker 2: maybe indicative of what's ahead and free agency?
- 30:35Speaker 1: Yeah, it definitely feels a little bit like Thomas Brown
- 30:39Speaker 1: is overqualified for the Jets, That's.
- 30:41Speaker 2: What I'm saying.
- 30:41Speaker 1: But he's here but pass reportedly, Yeah, pass game coordinator
- 30:45Speaker 1: and tight ends coach though, is a pathway to offensive coordinator.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Tommy Reaves had that title with the Cleveland Browns last
- 30:51Speaker 1: year and now he's their offensive But it's not.
- 30:53Speaker 2: You know, pending something crazy that's he's not going to
- 30:57Speaker 2: be able to do that here, correct.
- 30:58Speaker 1: But he's going to interview I would think next cycle,
- 31:00Speaker 1: next year, he'll have interviews for offensive coordinator jobs. And
- 31:04Speaker 1: this title keeps him in that pipeline, whether it's here
- 31:08Speaker 1: or it's elsewhere. He's gonna his name is going to
- 31:10Speaker 1: continue to be in that pipeline. But what I go
- 31:13Speaker 1: back to again, just schematically with all this, because he
- 31:16Speaker 1: is going to be the past game coordinator, is can
- 31:19Speaker 1: they bring in some of those Kansas City Chief Philadelphia
- 31:23Speaker 1: elements to this offense and get some of that stuff
- 31:27Speaker 1: in here?
- 31:27Speaker 2: For say, RPOs, you're talking about RPOs?
- 31:29Speaker 1: Yeah, why why does it matter because you.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Got all excited about RPOs? What was it last week
- 31:34Speaker 2: two weeks ago?
- 31:34Speaker 1: Love RPOs?
- 31:35Speaker 2: Yeah, Drake?
- 31:37Speaker 1: I just I think the biggest reason why I liked
- 31:40Speaker 1: him for Drake May is just watching teams like Kansas City,
- 31:45Speaker 1: watching teams like Philadelphia, watching teams like Buffalo. It always
- 31:49Speaker 1: puts the defense in a position where they have to
- 31:51Speaker 1: guard six guys, right, they have to guard the five
- 31:54Speaker 1: skill players and they have to guard the quarterback. So
- 31:56Speaker 1: you're putting the defense in this position where now all
- 32:01Speaker 1: of a sudden, everybody on the field that's eligible to
- 32:03Speaker 1: touch the football is a threat. And that is really
- 32:07Speaker 1: intriguing to me. I understand that it's not it's not
- 32:11Speaker 1: a cure all. They're not gonna all of a sudden
- 32:13Speaker 1: start running a bunch of RPOs and be the number
- 32:15Speaker 1: one offense in the league, right, That's not what I'm
- 32:17Speaker 1: getting at. But until they start to really leverage Drake
- 32:21Speaker 1: May's athletic ability, whether that's moving pockets, whether that's RPO,
- 32:25Speaker 1: whether that's readoption, whatever the case may be. And I
- 32:28Speaker 1: get to I hear like a lot of pushback on
- 32:30Speaker 1: this about keeping him healthy, and my rebuttal to that
- 32:34Speaker 1: is is this is how he's got to play like
- 32:36Speaker 1: if he he's got to figure out a way to
- 32:39Speaker 1: keep himself healthy. That's ultimately what it comes down to,
- 32:42Speaker 1: because if you take away this element of his skill set,
- 32:47Speaker 1: then he's playing left handed, like he's playing with one
- 32:49Speaker 1: hand tied behind his back. So in order for him
- 32:51Speaker 1: to be great, I do think that he's got to
- 32:54Speaker 1: have these types of elements within an offense. That doesn't
- 32:57Speaker 1: mean you have to turn him into Cam Newton and
- 32:58Speaker 1: turn him into a battering ram and have him run
- 33:01Speaker 1: inside the tackles ten times a game. You have the
- 33:03Speaker 1: Joe Milton package for that, sure, but you just you
- 33:06Speaker 1: have to you have to be cognizant of what you're
- 33:09Speaker 1: calling and in terms of that kind of stuff. But again,
- 33:12Speaker 1: I go back to that Eagles, this Eagles offense. Go
- 33:15Speaker 1: watch the Eagles in the NFC Championship game, or go
- 33:18Speaker 1: watch the Eagles what we're going to see on Sunday
- 33:20Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl, and watch, like, how many real
- 33:23Speaker 1: hits Jalen Hurts takes on these types of schemes. I'm
- 33:26Speaker 1: not talking about hits in the pocket, you know, when
- 33:28Speaker 1: he's under pressure, but real hits in terms of running
- 33:32Speaker 1: the football. In terms of running these type of schemes,
- 33:35Speaker 1: it's not as many as you think. So as long
- 33:37Speaker 1: as Drake May is cognizant of it, and they're cognizant
- 33:41Speaker 1: of how they're where they're putting him into those types
- 33:44Speaker 1: of situations, then they'll be all right. I in a
- 33:47Speaker 1: lot of ways, I think it's better than having him
- 33:49Speaker 1: just run around scrambling like he did at times last
- 33:52Speaker 1: year because it's it's planned right, It's it's coordinated. There's
- 33:56Speaker 1: a scheme to it of where he's going to be
- 33:58Speaker 1: going and what direction is going to be going in.
- 34:01Speaker 1: So I think that's big, and I just I keep
- 34:04Speaker 1: coming back to how to you maximize his skill set?
- 34:07Speaker 1: The only way to maximize his skill set is to
- 34:09Speaker 1: use them like all these quarterbacks. Use them like Hurts,
- 34:12Speaker 1: use them like Allen, use them like Mahomes.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Like.
- 34:15Speaker 1: If you don't do those types of things, I just
- 34:16Speaker 1: don't think you're going to get the most out of
- 34:18Speaker 1: the players. So it's on everybody to keep them healthy.
- 34:21Speaker 1: But I think you have to if you're really going
- 34:23Speaker 1: to get this offense going where it needs to go.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Next one Doug Maroon offensive line coach. It sounds like
- 34:30Speaker 1: gonna be his title, or at least that it's going
- 34:33Speaker 1: to be where most of his involvement's going to be in.
- 34:35Speaker 1: I know there are some mixed reviews from his last
- 34:37Speaker 1: couple stops Alabama, New Orleans with the Saints. Wasn't great
- 34:43Speaker 1: in either one of those stops, But this is another
- 34:46Speaker 1: veteran coach that's been around football for one hundred years,
- 34:49Speaker 1: that's coached offensive line for a very, very long time.
- 34:52Speaker 1: So this isn't going to be a guy that's new
- 34:54Speaker 1: to the gig. This is not Scott Peters who's never
- 34:57Speaker 1: coached an offensive line room before, experience coach. I understand
- 35:02Speaker 1: that maybe his track record recently is spotty, but everything
- 35:05Speaker 1: that I've heard about Doug Moron is overwhelmingly positive about
- 35:09Speaker 1: his ball knowledge. Just his knowledge of the game is
- 35:11Speaker 1: knowledge of offensive line play and all those types of things.
- 35:14Speaker 1: And I don't think it's a small thing that how
- 35:18Speaker 1: dealing is also coming with him who is coaching with
- 35:21Speaker 1: the Titans, with Rabel, who's also been a head offensive
- 35:25Speaker 1: line coach. So you're essentially going to have two guys
- 35:28Speaker 1: in that room now that have both run the room before.
- 35:31Speaker 1: So I feel like that's really a lot of brain
- 35:34Speaker 1: power to coach the offensive line. And there is a
- 35:37Speaker 1: tie there with Josh McDaniels with you know, through Bill
- 35:40Speaker 1: O'Brien with Doug Moroon, and that's big in this offense.
- 35:44Speaker 1: You have to have the coordinator and the offensive line
- 35:47Speaker 1: coach in unison in sync because a lot of this
- 35:51Speaker 1: offense is this is how we're going to design the
- 35:54Speaker 1: game plan, how are we going to block it up?
- 35:57Speaker 1: And the coordinator and McDaniels is going to rely a
- 35:59Speaker 1: lot on Doug moroone to help him with the schematics
- 36:02Speaker 1: of how they're gonna block things and all that kind
- 36:04Speaker 1: of stuff. So it's an important relationship. I think that's
- 36:07Speaker 1: the most important in my mind in this system especially,
- 36:11Speaker 1: is offensive coordinator an offensive line coach.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think he's a good higher.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Look.
- 36:16Speaker 2: I think Peters did a good job last year, but Marone,
- 36:19Speaker 2: like you said, he's experienced. He can't have a ton
- 36:21Speaker 2: of talent to work with the New Orleans that last stop,
- 36:23Speaker 2: like it's gonna come down to if they don't give
- 36:25Speaker 2: him any talent, it's not gonna look good, just like
- 36:27Speaker 2: it did with Peters. But as a guy that's been
- 36:30Speaker 2: around a long time, he's done it in the track
- 36:32Speaker 2: record speaks for itself. So I thought that was a
- 36:35Speaker 2: good hire. We'll see if like you had said, you know,
- 36:37Speaker 2: is he gonna be the offensive line coach, is gonna
- 36:39Speaker 2: be a consultant working with the offensive lineman something like that.
- 36:42Speaker 2: We'll see, but we know he can do it. They
- 36:46Speaker 2: just got to get him the talent to work with.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I come back to with him. I think
- 36:51Speaker 1: that Doug Moroon is probably going to be more big
- 36:57Speaker 1: picture schematic x's and o's again, and this is the
- 37:01Speaker 1: game plan, this is the opponent, these are the runs
- 37:03Speaker 1: we want to put in, These are the past plays
- 37:05Speaker 1: we want to put in. How are we going to
- 37:07Speaker 1: block these things? I think that's where Doug Moron's expertise
- 37:10Speaker 1: comes in. Jason Hodling is gonna probably be the assistant
- 37:14Speaker 1: offensive line coach, but might be the offensive line coach
- 37:16Speaker 1: with Doug Moron as like a senior assistant. We'll see
- 37:19Speaker 1: how that all shakes out. He to me is going
- 37:22Speaker 1: to be the technique guy, like I think he's going
- 37:24Speaker 1: to be the guy that's going to be trading up
- 37:27Speaker 1: Will Campbell or is going to be training up Arianta
- 37:30Speaker 1: or Soi or whoever ends up being the pick for
- 37:32Speaker 1: the Patriots and Cayden Wallace and the leftovers from last year.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Like those guys, I feel like from a technique standpoint,
- 37:38Speaker 1: are going to more work with Howdling and Doug Moron
- 37:41Speaker 1: is going to be more in terms of the big
- 37:44Speaker 1: picture overseer. And I think the similar thing with the
- 37:46Speaker 1: wide receivers coach Todd Downing is the reported higher for
- 37:51Speaker 1: wide receivers coach. I have some reservations about this one.
- 37:54Speaker 1: I think you do too. Yeah, this is probably my
- 37:56Speaker 1: least favorite hire of the entire staff so far, with
- 38:00Speaker 1: doubting it's not necessarily because of his reputation as a
- 38:04Speaker 1: play caller, because I don't really care because he's not
- 38:06Speaker 1: going to call plays. In fact, I think he's probably
- 38:09Speaker 1: at best third in line to call plays if God forbid,
- 38:13Speaker 1: the worst case scenario happens, I would assume that Thomas
- 38:15Speaker 1: Brown would be.
- 38:16Speaker 2: I mean, he has a coordinator title, he should be.
- 38:18Speaker 2: I also wonder if even Doug Moron would be out
- 38:20Speaker 2: of him.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Yeah, So I'm not too concerned about him touching that
- 38:23Speaker 1: aspect of it. What I am concerned about is his
- 38:26Speaker 1: lack of experience coaching wide receivers specifically and just in general.
- 38:31Speaker 1: They have really struggled with the development of that position,
- 38:36Speaker 1: not just the mental development, but also in a lot
- 38:38Speaker 1: of ways physical development as well. So a guy that's
- 38:41Speaker 1: never coached wide receivers before is now going to come
- 38:44Speaker 1: in here and he's going to have Jalen Polk, He's
- 38:47Speaker 1: maybe as Javon Baker, depending on if he makes a team.
- 38:50Speaker 1: He's probably going to have a draft pick that they
- 38:53Speaker 1: use a pretty high draft pick on a wide receiver
- 38:56Speaker 1: as well. My expected vision with Todd Downing McDaniels' offense
- 39:02Speaker 1: is very conceptual. They run a system that has a
- 39:06Speaker 1: lot of conversions. There's a lot of options, there's a
- 39:08Speaker 1: lot of sightedjusts and reads and things like that that
- 39:12Speaker 1: are involved in this route tree. And then there's also
- 39:14Speaker 1: a lot of concepts, Like you know, you have to
- 39:17Speaker 1: know who the what the other guys in the concept
- 39:19Speaker 1: are doing. Everything has sort of a domino effect on
- 39:22Speaker 1: each other. It's not just go run a nine route, right,
- 39:25Speaker 1: you have to understand what the guy next to you
- 39:27Speaker 1: is doing. My guess is that Downing, with his coordinator experience,
- 39:31Speaker 1: is probably coming in to teach the concepts of the
- 39:34Speaker 1: system and teach the big picture kind of like we
- 39:36Speaker 1: were just talking about with Doug Morone. And maybe there's
- 39:39Speaker 1: another shoot a drop in terms of a hire that
- 39:42Speaker 1: has the technique expertise the Taekwon Underwood type higher, right,
- 39:46Speaker 1: is it Wes Welker? I would love that. I don't
- 39:47Speaker 1: know if Wes Welker needs to take a demotion of
- 39:50Speaker 1: that magnitude going from a wide receivers coach with Miami
- 39:54Speaker 1: to now basically an assistant wide receivers coach, But I
- 39:58Speaker 1: would like to still see them bring in somebody that
- 40:01Speaker 1: has an expertise in technique fundamentals at the wide receiver position, releases,
- 40:07Speaker 1: top of the route, catch point, all that kind of stuff,
- 40:10Speaker 1: and then allow Todd down and to kind of run
- 40:12Speaker 1: the room.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you right there. Like, this is a
- 40:16Speaker 2: team that has struggled with wide receiver development for a
- 40:18Speaker 2: long time. It's been quite the roadblock, So you'd hope
- 40:23Speaker 2: that they get somebody with experience in talent development. Downing
- 40:27Speaker 2: teaching the offense makes sense, but you need a player
- 40:31Speaker 2: developer in the building working with those guys, especially if
- 40:35Speaker 2: you play on taking a wide receiver high in the draft.
- 40:37Speaker 2: I've said this, and this higher kind of reinforces it
- 40:40Speaker 2: for me. As things stand right now, I don't know
- 40:43Speaker 2: that I want them to take a receiver in the
- 40:44Speaker 2: top one hundred because I just don't know that the
- 40:47Speaker 2: pieces are in place to bring that guy along. It
- 40:48Speaker 2: doesn't mean they don't need a receiver. They absolutely do,
- 40:51Speaker 2: but it has to be in the veteran market. It
- 40:52Speaker 2: has to be a guy that has already developed has
- 40:55Speaker 2: proven himself in the league can come in on Day
- 40:57Speaker 2: one and be ready to go. And there's not a
- 41:00Speaker 2: receiver in this draft that's going to be able to
- 41:02Speaker 2: do that, even Ted McMillan or Travis Hunter. So like
- 41:06Speaker 2: if they were to add like a Wes Welker as
- 41:08Speaker 2: an assistant, that changes it a little bit for me.
- 41:11Speaker 2: But they need somebody who can who has experienced developing
- 41:16Speaker 2: players at that position. They've kind of used that coach
- 41:20Speaker 2: through multiple head coaches here now in different iterations as
- 41:25Speaker 2: sort of a schematic guy. That's not a coach where
- 41:27Speaker 2: you want a schematic guy for where this team is
- 41:29Speaker 2: at right now. You need a teacher, and they they've
- 41:31Speaker 2: got to find somebody to be that assistant who can
- 41:34Speaker 2: be that guy.
- 41:35Speaker 1: It's a good point really with McDaniel's going back, you
- 41:38Speaker 1: had Mick Lombardi, had Chad O'Shea. You had to your
- 41:43Speaker 1: point they had schematic guys in that role.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Remember was it Nick at one point?
- 41:48Speaker 1: Maybe going back aways? And Joe Judge was there.
- 41:51Speaker 2: For I know Joe Judge while being the special teams
- 41:54Speaker 2: coordinator made no sense.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Michail Harry's rookie season. I don't Casario, I might have been.
- 41:59Speaker 2: That's they had some fun office guy who was like
- 42:01Speaker 2: also the wide receivers coach for a season, So yeah,
- 42:04Speaker 2: it was Nick Cassario in two thousand and seven while
- 42:06Speaker 2: he was mac Oys. But yeah, I think there was
- 42:09Speaker 2: one other job, might be forgetting better So.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Yeah, but you're right, it is notoriously been eschematic coach,
- 42:16Speaker 1: like a guy that's coming in to coach the x's
- 42:18Speaker 1: and o's of the passing game. Almost they almost used
- 42:21Speaker 1: that role judge by the way, Yeah, you're almost used
- 42:24Speaker 1: that role in a lot of ways, like as like
- 42:25Speaker 1: a pass game coordinator, right, And they never gave that
- 42:28Speaker 1: official title out like you mentioned, but in a lot
- 42:31Speaker 1: of ways, that was what the wide receivers coach was here,
- 42:34Speaker 1: especially with Chad O'Shea, who was basically their red zone coordinator,
- 42:38Speaker 1: like he did a lot of the red zone work
- 42:40Speaker 1: when he was in New England. So I think they
- 42:42Speaker 1: can kind of ran into a little bit of some
- 42:45Speaker 1: roadblocks with some of these hires. Some of the guys
- 42:48Speaker 1: that were McDaniel's guys are under contract with other teams,
- 42:53Speaker 1: and I think that that did potentially add some kind
- 42:57Speaker 1: of roadblocks or issues with staff. I do think they
- 43:01Speaker 1: would have had interest in Chad O'shay coming back, but
- 43:04Speaker 1: he's under contract with the Browns, seems happy in Cleveland,
- 43:06Speaker 1: you know, didn't want to move Carmen Brisillo with the
- 43:09Speaker 1: Giants running the offensive line with the Giants right now
- 43:12Speaker 1: under Dable. He obviously wasn't available contractually as well. So
- 43:18Speaker 1: guys like that maybe were part of the reason why.
- 43:21Speaker 1: And I'm interested with those two in particular. I bring
- 43:23Speaker 1: them up because we don't know what the future is
- 43:26Speaker 1: for Dabel or Kevin Stefanski in their head coaching position.
- 43:29Speaker 1: So is there a chance that this is what they
- 43:32Speaker 1: do this year and then come next year those guys,
- 43:34Speaker 1: their head coaches get blown out and then they end
- 43:37Speaker 1: up coming back and being McDaniel's guys. I think that's
- 43:39Speaker 1: definitely possible. I want to move over to the defense
- 43:42Speaker 1: side of the ball with one hire in particular that
- 43:45Speaker 1: I thought I was worth bringing up, Scott Booker, who's
- 43:48Speaker 1: the reported safeties coach secondary coach. I'm not exactly sure
- 43:53Speaker 1: what his title is going to be, but Scott Booker
- 43:57Speaker 1: was in Tennessee with Mike Rabel and Terrell Williams for
- 44:00Speaker 1: basically the whole time. I believe that those guys were there.
- 44:03Speaker 1: And I look at Scott Booker, who was with Buffalo
- 44:06Speaker 1: last year by the way, coaching up their nickel corners
- 44:09Speaker 1: and their secondary He to me is tying now together
- 44:14Speaker 1: the front end and the back end. We talked about
- 44:16Speaker 1: this a little bit with Terrell Williams. Terrell Williams a
- 44:18Speaker 1: front seven guy, He's a defensive line guy. Those types
- 44:21Speaker 1: of guys don't usually get super involved in coverage and
- 44:24Speaker 1: things like that. It looks to me like Scott Booker
- 44:27Speaker 1: is being brought in to basically be the pass game
- 44:29Speaker 1: coordinator of the defense, and then you're gonna have Terrell
- 44:32Speaker 1: Williams running the front seven and running the pressures and
- 44:35Speaker 1: things like that. So those two guys working together on
- 44:40Speaker 1: marrying back end and front end, you know, coverage with
- 44:42Speaker 1: rush and things like that, I think is your brain
- 44:44Speaker 1: trust a lot with Rabel on the defensive side of
- 44:47Speaker 1: the ball. So I think Scott Booker is an important
- 44:49Speaker 1: higher I think that's a name we should all know
- 44:52Speaker 1: in terms of essentially, I wouldn't be surprised if he.
- 44:55Speaker 1: I think he had a senior assistant title in Buffalo,
- 44:58Speaker 1: so I wouldn't be surprised if he has a pretty
- 45:01Speaker 1: high title here once it gets announced.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how that sets up.
- 45:06Speaker 2: I like his experience working with multiple spots in the
- 45:08Speaker 2: secondary because they have so many guys in that secondary
- 45:10Speaker 2: that play multiple positions. I think he's the kind of
- 45:13Speaker 2: guy that can kind of maximize they need to add,
- 45:16Speaker 2: but the personnel that they have, I think he's a
- 45:18Speaker 2: good fit for the personnel that they have. And yeah,
- 45:21Speaker 2: you have that through line of experience from Rabel to
- 45:23Speaker 2: Williams to Booker and everybody should be on the same
- 45:26Speaker 2: page day one.
- 45:27Speaker 1: It's cool that side of the ball is getting the
- 45:31Speaker 1: band back together from Tennessee essentially in more or less,
- 45:35Speaker 1: and I think that's a good thing for the Patriots.
- 45:37Speaker 1: I think Vrabel's gonna now be able to truly run
- 45:39Speaker 1: his defense. It's gonna be a lot like what we saw,
- 45:42Speaker 1: i'm sure from the Titans over the years when he
- 45:44Speaker 1: was there, and he's got his guys, Unlike on offense,
- 45:47Speaker 1: where it's a little bit more of a mixed bag
- 45:50Speaker 1: of who experiences and places that people have been in
- 45:54Speaker 1: things like that. I'm not overly concerned about that part
- 45:57Speaker 1: of it from the offensive side, but it is worth noting.
- 45:59Speaker 1: I think that that there is a little bit more
- 46:01Speaker 1: of a mixture there. Defensively, this is Rabels guys, this
- 46:04Speaker 1: is his staff on that side.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Which I'll go back to what I say when they
- 46:07Speaker 2: hired Williams, I wanted to be Mike Rabel's defense. Yeah.
- 46:09Speaker 2: It's not to take anything away from Williams, like he's
- 46:11Speaker 2: a good coach, but at the end of the day,
- 46:13Speaker 2: this was one of the things with girod Mayo we
- 46:15Speaker 2: talked about when when it got rough, you know, you
- 46:18Speaker 2: hired Drod Mayo in theory because the job he did
- 46:20Speaker 2: on the defensive side of the ball. Would he step
- 46:22Speaker 2: in and correct the ship that's we want a defensive
- 46:25Speaker 2: coach to do. He never did it. Rabel seems like
- 46:28Speaker 2: he's just going to be hands on with it from
- 46:29Speaker 2: day one, and then that's sets up Josh McDaniels to
- 46:32Speaker 2: run the offense. And I think this is essentially the
- 46:34Speaker 2: setup they wanted last year. But now they have guys
- 46:36Speaker 2: who have done it, yeah, and it's just gonna make
- 46:38Speaker 2: it a whole lot easier.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Last thing on the coaching staff, Greg Madard had something
- 46:43Speaker 1: out there as well about the I think it was
- 46:48Speaker 1: Greg that Rabel could call plays on defense, and I'm
- 46:52Speaker 1: interested in that element of it because Terrell Williams has
- 46:56Speaker 1: never called plays at least that I know of, on
- 46:58Speaker 1: the defensive side of the ball. Rabel has obviously at
- 47:01Speaker 1: Ohio State and in Houston as their defensive coordinator. How
- 47:06Speaker 1: would you feel of Rabel was the primary play caller?
- 47:09Speaker 1: Do you like that? Do you like the CEO approach?
- 47:11Speaker 1: Because you just brought it up, and I think it's
- 47:13Speaker 1: a great point. Girod Mayo never took ownership of that defense.
- 47:16Speaker 1: He never took ownership. Last year, we pounded the table
- 47:19Speaker 1: on this show early, early, early, early, like first month
- 47:22Speaker 1: of the season. Why isn't Girod calling the defense? Why
- 47:25Speaker 1: isn't Girod calling the defense? Now? Rabel has that experience
- 47:29Speaker 1: to tap into as a former head coach to be
- 47:32Speaker 1: the CEO. He certainly has more chops and experience in
- 47:35Speaker 1: that regard to pull it off in that respect. But
- 47:38Speaker 1: you look at the way that a lot of these
- 47:40Speaker 1: models are working now. There's a lot of that going
- 47:43Speaker 1: on where even if you're a defensive guy, you're a
- 47:46Speaker 1: defensive guy calling your defense and you have the Josh
- 47:49Speaker 1: McDaniels head coach offense, calling the offense and running the
- 47:53Speaker 1: show on offense. How would you feel of Rabel's calling
- 47:56Speaker 1: the defense.
- 47:57Speaker 2: I'd be okay with that. I don't know a problem
- 47:59Speaker 2: with Like I said, I wanted to be his defense,
- 48:01Speaker 2: so that's definitely him putting his mark on it. I
- 48:03Speaker 2: wonder if it's a situation where maybe he does that early. Yeah,
- 48:08Speaker 2: and maybe eventually Terrell Williams, you know, and when I
- 48:11Speaker 2: say eventually, I mean over the course of a couple
- 48:13Speaker 2: of years. Terrell Williams or somebody else is kind of
- 48:15Speaker 2: groomed to that, so verybel once this thing's really built out,
- 48:20Speaker 2: can focus more on the play to play of it,
- 48:22Speaker 2: and you know, on both sides of the ball, but
- 48:25Speaker 2: to get it started, I have no problem with it.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I would actually entertain it. I think there's a
- 48:31Speaker 1: lot to be said about having experience as a play caller.
- 48:35Speaker 1: I think it's a tough job, and I think it's
- 48:37Speaker 1: a unique job in this sport that not everybody is ready.
- 48:43Speaker 2: For, especially on defense.
- 48:45Speaker 1: It's very unique.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Actually think it it might be harder to call defensive
- 48:48Speaker 2: plays and offensive place Well, you're reacting right exactly offensive
- 48:52Speaker 2: plays like you're setting the tone calling defensive plays is
- 48:55Speaker 2: almost purely reactionary.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Yeah, A lot of what's cool about colin plays early
- 49:00Speaker 1: on in games is that most of the time the
- 49:02Speaker 1: offense the script like the opening script. A lot of
- 49:06Speaker 1: people always chalk the opening script up to like, what
- 49:10Speaker 1: are the best game plan plays that you have to
- 49:12Speaker 1: get off to a fast start, And that's certainly an
- 49:14Speaker 1: element of it. But a lot of the opening script
- 49:17Speaker 1: from the offensive standpoint is information gathering of how the
- 49:21Speaker 1: defense is gonna it's gonna handle things. So if we
- 49:24Speaker 1: show this formation, if we show this motion, if we
- 49:26Speaker 1: show this look, how is a defense gonna cover that?
- 49:31Speaker 1: How are they gonna react to that? And if they react,
- 49:33Speaker 1: if they do A, then do we have what's B? Right,
- 49:36Speaker 1: do we have a counter to that? Or if they
- 49:38Speaker 1: do B, can we counter with A? And so coordinators,
- 49:42Speaker 1: good offensive play callers will call plays early on in games,
- 49:46Speaker 1: and every play that you want you call, you want
- 49:49Speaker 1: to work. Like I'm not saying that they're calling plays
- 49:51Speaker 1: to have them not work, but a lot of coordinators
- 49:53Speaker 1: will call plays early on in games and it might
- 49:56Speaker 1: not necessarily go off great, right, it might not necessarily
- 49:59Speaker 1: be a great play, And to the fan, you might say, well,
- 50:02Speaker 1: why the heck did they call that play? But they
- 50:04Speaker 1: might have called that play early in the game just
- 50:07Speaker 1: to see what the defense was going to do and
- 50:09Speaker 1: how they were going to defend it so that they
- 50:11Speaker 1: could call a compliment to it later on. And that's
- 50:14Speaker 1: what you get into that chess match, and defensively that
- 50:17Speaker 1: that can be difficult. You know, you're reacting a lot
- 50:19Speaker 1: to defense. On defense, to personnel grouping formation, and then
- 50:24Speaker 1: obviously play design and on offense, you're kind of dictating
- 50:27Speaker 1: those terms, right, all right, anything else on the coaching
- 50:30Speaker 1: staff stand out to you, and that's pretty much.
- 50:33Speaker 2: I just want to see who that other wide receivers coaches.
- 50:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I do think that that would be good for them,
- 50:37Speaker 1: if they can hire a true technique assistant offensive assistant
- 50:43Speaker 1: to Todd Downing. I'm trying to get this the.
- 50:46Speaker 2: Oh, it's not so easy, is it. Huh? The freaking
- 50:49Speaker 2: works not so easy to answer?
- 50:51Speaker 1: Okay, well, it's not my fault. I don't have a mouse.
- 50:53Speaker 1: Maybe maybe Marine can pull up the calls for us,
- 50:55Speaker 1: because this thing is not working. Apparently, is it turned on?
- 50:59Speaker 1: I can't hear you.
- 51:00Speaker 4: Is it turned on?
- 51:01Speaker 1: Yes? I flipped the switch the other way too, to
- 51:05Speaker 1: see if it will turn on that way, and hello, Hello,
- 51:09Speaker 1: can you pull them up and we'll figure out the moss. Patty?
- 51:11Speaker 1: I pull up, Patty. What's up, Patty? How are we doing.
- 51:15Speaker 5: Good?
- 51:15Speaker 6: How you guys doing this? Afternoon? I been? I get
- 51:20Speaker 6: a task for you. Okay, you have to convince the
- 51:23Speaker 6: rest of the TU guys that will Cable is a
- 51:26Speaker 6: good pick.
- 51:26Speaker 3: At number four.
- 51:29Speaker 1: I think that's going to be difficult, Patty.
- 51:33Speaker 6: I know, but just from my perspective, I mean I
- 51:37Speaker 6: don't know who's going to be there. I don't know
- 51:38Speaker 6: who we're getting in free agency. I mean this this
- 51:40Speaker 6: whole thing is hung up on or contingent upon, like
- 51:43Speaker 6: what we do in free agency. But I think, uh,
- 51:47Speaker 6: you know, the line's bed's so bad. I think you
- 51:50Speaker 6: gotta do the what is it the draft one? Draft one?
- 51:55Speaker 1: Yeah, ye, our company slogan.
- 52:00Speaker 6: But also like what I when I failed to stay
- 52:02Speaker 6: last week, when I called it the PEU was like
- 52:04Speaker 6: what Jeremiah said? What he is right up on him?
- 52:07Speaker 6: Like there's I don't think there's another guy, like another
- 52:10Speaker 6: national draft guy that's out there whose opinion I respect
- 52:14Speaker 6: more than the Jeremiah's you guys obviously too, but you
- 52:16Speaker 6: guys aren't really national guys. But I really just wanted
- 52:20Speaker 6: to see what you guys thought of were really Alex,
- 52:23Speaker 6: because everdon I know, you kind of went over thoroughly
- 52:26Speaker 6: which thought of Will Campbell if he measures out you
- 52:28Speaker 6: want him, And That's kind of where I'm at right
- 52:31Speaker 6: now to I just wanted to get Alex's perspective on
- 52:33Speaker 6: him and just.
- 52:36Speaker 7: What would be.
- 52:37Speaker 6: Probably his biggest drink playing in this offense, and what
- 52:41Speaker 6: would be his biggest weakness. And I'll take it off there, guys.
- 52:43Speaker 1: Thanks, Thanks, I'm.
- 52:45Speaker 6: Picking the I'm picking the Eagles to win thirty one
- 52:49Speaker 6: to twenty.
- 52:50Speaker 1: Nice. Yeah, nice, Well, I ended on a prediction of
- 52:53Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. Thanks for the call of Patty. So
- 52:56Speaker 1: Will Campbell, I've gone back and forth with Will Campbell. Yeah,
- 53:00Speaker 1: I'm trying to be consistent. I'm starting to really believe
- 53:03Speaker 1: in Will Campbell as an option for the Patriots, not
- 53:06Speaker 1: that I didn't before, but I'm trying to be consistent
- 53:09Speaker 1: this year with it. And the main thing that I
- 53:13Speaker 1: look at with Will Campbell that would give me any
- 53:15Speaker 1: concern about playing tackle is that he does have a
- 53:19Speaker 1: tendency to overshoot his landmark in his passet and then
- 53:22Speaker 1: open up the inside. We see that a lot with
- 53:24Speaker 1: like inside counters getting to him and giving up that leverage.
- 53:28Speaker 1: But how much of that is coachable? How much of
- 53:31Speaker 1: that is him overcompensating for the lack of length and
- 53:34Speaker 1: him having to get out to those poles?
- 53:35Speaker 2: How much of that is having a quarterback that has
- 53:37Speaker 2: zero consistency your pocketbus?
- 53:39Speaker 1: Right? Those are the high level questions that people that
- 53:43Speaker 1: are more nuanced with offensive line play than me need
- 53:46Speaker 1: to answer in this organization, Right, how much of is
- 53:49Speaker 1: that coachable? Is that correctable? Is that compensation for lack
- 53:54Speaker 1: of length? That's where the lack of length, to me
- 53:56Speaker 1: shows up with Will Campbell. I don't see a big
- 53:58Speaker 1: issue with him in terms of like establishing first contact
- 54:02Speaker 1: and things like that being a major concern. I don't
- 54:05Speaker 1: see that with his film. What I see is is
- 54:08Speaker 1: that he gets out of his set aggressively, overcompensates, and
- 54:12Speaker 1: then gets beat to the inside by those twitched up
- 54:14Speaker 1: pressures that he's going to see at this level. There's
- 54:17Speaker 1: the one time that Kyle Kinnard got him in that
- 54:19Speaker 1: South Carolina game was with a little crossover to the inside,
- 54:22Speaker 1: So that that's an element that if you wanted to
- 54:25Speaker 1: be anti Will Campbell, that you'd have to point to.
- 54:29Speaker 1: But there's so many pros with his athleticism and his
- 54:31Speaker 1: makeup that I feel like if it's if it's correctable,
- 54:34Speaker 1: if it's coachable, then it will get corrected and fixed.
- 54:38Speaker 2: And this isn't a guy that is like proportionally small.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Right right right, Like yesterday, not to cut you off, yesterday,
- 54:45Speaker 1: Paul got under my skin as he normally does, because
- 54:48Speaker 1: he brought up Isaiah Win, and I'm like, this is
- 54:50Speaker 1: a totally Noah.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Isaiah Win was a guard in college.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Isaiah Win was tiny by by NFL standards, inside, outside, whatever.
- 54:59Speaker 1: Isaiah Win was a small human handle six six three
- 55:03Speaker 1: twenty yeah, something like that.
- 55:05Speaker 2: So no, he like he's big, he's powerful, He's so
- 55:11Speaker 2: advanced technically for his age, which, to your point, Evan,
- 55:14Speaker 2: if that issue is coachable, this is a guy that
- 55:17Speaker 2: can take coaching. This is a guy that knows how
- 55:19Speaker 2: to improve his game. You mentioned that Kyle Gnard move
- 55:21Speaker 2: that beat him in the South Carolina game. That was
- 55:23Speaker 2: I remember for his first play, but his first drive,
- 55:25Speaker 2: he comes back and he adjusts and he handles that
- 55:29Speaker 2: move three or four more times later in that game.
- 55:32Speaker 2: He is a quick learner, which you want at that position.
- 55:36Speaker 2: So does he come without faults? No? But if I
- 55:38Speaker 2: were to tell you right now, Will Campbell's arms are
- 55:41Speaker 2: thirty three quarter inches and you're sprinting that card up
- 55:45Speaker 2: at four, I don't even know you're trading down. You're
- 55:47Speaker 2: sprinting that card up at four. We'll see what the
- 55:49Speaker 2: number is. If if he comes in at thirty two
- 55:52Speaker 2: and a half, okay, we'll have another conversation. I would
- 55:56Speaker 2: even say, like the tough one. So this is what
- 55:58Speaker 2: it's gonna because, is gonna be anoy thirty two and
- 56:01Speaker 2: seven eighths.
- 56:02Speaker 1: I'm in, I'm in two. If you're if you're getting
- 56:05Speaker 1: all caught up on one eighth of an inch of
- 56:08Speaker 1: arm length and you're missing the plot, it's.
- 56:10Speaker 2: It's Rashawn Slater, right. It was like it was thirty
- 56:12Speaker 2: four inches for years. Yeah, and then Rashaun Slater with
- 56:15Speaker 2: thirty four inch arms came in and was great, and
- 56:18Speaker 2: then all the all the people who just stick to
- 56:21Speaker 2: the spreadsheet, well, oh no, it was always thirty three.
- 56:23Speaker 2: There was just never anybody good enough and if Will
- 56:25Speaker 2: Campbell's thirty two and seven eighths and he comes in,
- 56:28Speaker 2: you'll hear a bunch of people saying, oh no, it
- 56:29Speaker 2: was always thirty two and a half. There was just
- 56:31Speaker 2: never anybody good enough. So this team needs a left tackle.
- 56:34Speaker 2: I don't care where he would have ranked in last
- 56:37Speaker 2: year's draft. I don't care, you know the standing of
- 56:39Speaker 2: these other guys. Look, Abdull Carter's not gonna be on
- 56:42Speaker 2: the board. Yeah, If Abdul Carter's on the board, it's
- 56:44Speaker 2: probably one guy take ahead of Campbell, Travis Hunter two.
- 56:48Speaker 2: But I don't think either of them are gonna be
- 56:49Speaker 2: on the board. I think it's gonna be one quarterback,
- 56:52Speaker 2: Hunter and Carter or Hunter Carter and maybe Mason Graham, Yeah,
- 56:58Speaker 2: or maybe Ted McMillan. So this team needs a left tackle.
- 57:02Speaker 2: They need a left tackle. You know my little spiel
- 57:05Speaker 2: that I like to give here. We've covered the two
- 57:07Speaker 2: of us. This is our eighth off season. We have
- 57:10Speaker 2: never once done an off season, and don't don't focus
- 57:13Speaker 2: on that part. We have never once done and off.
- 57:16Speaker 2: The first show we ever did together.
- 57:18Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what it was, Do you remember what
- 57:20Speaker 1: it was? It was the sixteen draft.
- 57:24Speaker 2: No, it was nos later that it was reacting to
- 57:27Speaker 2: the Isaiah Win Draft.
- 57:29Speaker 1: Okay, literally the first show we did I was living
- 57:31Speaker 1: in New York at the time.
- 57:33Speaker 2: The first show we did together back in the day
- 57:35Speaker 2: for ce L and Hass was hoping that the Patriots
- 57:39Speaker 2: had found their left tackle for the next ten years.
- 57:42Speaker 2: Here we are eight years later, and we are that
- 57:45Speaker 2: guy was not the answer, and nobody since has been
- 57:47Speaker 2: the answer. They need to fill this spot. Will Campbell
- 57:51Speaker 2: is a quarter to a half an inch away from
- 57:54Speaker 2: being a franchise left tackle. And there's no assuming Carters
- 57:58Speaker 2: off the board, assuming Hunter off the board, there is
- 58:01Speaker 2: no other clear cut player that you're taking him over.
- 58:05Speaker 2: I think he has to be the answer, assuming his
- 58:08Speaker 2: arms checkout.
- 58:10Speaker 1: I have no notes like I totally agree. I I
- 58:13Speaker 1: just feel like in this draft, in particular, you're looking
- 58:16Speaker 1: to solve problems. Right. You have major problems on the
- 58:20Speaker 1: offensive line. You have major problems. You could argue in
- 58:25Speaker 1: terms of wide receiver and defensive line help as well,
- 58:28Speaker 1: but nothing is more painstakingly obvious than the need on
- 58:32Speaker 1: the offensive line. And you have a guy in Will Campbell,
- 58:35Speaker 1: And I know people don't want to hear this but
- 58:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna say it anyway. He's gonna be a great
- 58:40Speaker 1: offensive lineman. I don't even down, but he's gonna be great.
- 58:43Speaker 2: It's just giving. I know, the worst case. Now he's
- 58:46Speaker 2: a guard, but he's.
- 58:47Speaker 1: Gonna make the line better no matter where he plays.
- 58:49Speaker 2: He really is and people, So you're gonna take a
- 58:52Speaker 2: guard at four it I know you create. You started
- 58:55Speaker 2: it with all these people about the anti guard different look.
- 58:59Speaker 1: That would That was what we were talking about.
- 59:01Speaker 2: It's it's so easy in this draft to knock down
- 59:06Speaker 2: any potential pick because it's not a great class. And
- 59:10Speaker 2: there are legitimate arguments against Will Campbell. There are legitimate
- 59:13Speaker 2: arguments against Tet McMillan. There are legitimate arguments against Calvin Banks.
- 59:16Speaker 2: There are legitimate arguments against Travis Hunter, against Abdull Carter,
- 59:20Speaker 2: against Mason Graham, a missing one. Who am I missing?
- 59:23Speaker 2: Will Johnson, any of them? I think with somebody else
- 59:25Speaker 2: any there's legitimate arguments against all these guys. And we did.
- 59:29Speaker 2: This was a couple months ago. We were texting as
- 59:31Speaker 2: you were kind of getting familiar with the top of
- 59:32Speaker 2: the class, and you know, you're talking about Will Carter's
- 59:35Speaker 2: arms and Kevin Bank, Kelvin Banks, Power and Teed McMillan's
- 59:38Speaker 2: speed blah blah blah. And it's like I think I
- 59:41Speaker 2: said to you, they have to take somebody. You can't
- 59:44Speaker 2: just say no, thanks, we'll take you know, we'll pick
- 59:46Speaker 2: fourth overall next year. Instead.
- 59:47Speaker 1: Yeah, nice?
- 59:48Speaker 2: Right, all right, so you want to just trade the
- 59:50Speaker 2: pick for a future for like, no, no, you you.
- 59:52Speaker 2: I don't want to hear the idea that, well, you
- 59:56Speaker 2: know this is where these guys would have ranked this year.
- 59:58Speaker 2: Well look at them in next year's clut You didn't
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: have the fourth overall pick. Last year, you don't have
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: the fourth. Maybe you will, but for now, you don't
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: have the fourth overall pick. Next year, you have the
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: fourth overall pick in this draft. To say, oh, well,
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: you know, none of these guys are worth a fourth
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: overall pick in twenty twenty four or in twenty twenty one,
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: or in twenty twenty six or in twenty twenty six.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: That's not the draft they're in.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: No one's gets them so funny because it's it's annoying.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: I don't it's such a lazy taste.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: So so here's my here's my not even rebuttal but
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: here's my response to that, because I do I have
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: done that.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: You can only take the players that are on the board.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: So if I'm only if I can only take the
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: players on the board, because I can, that's the only option. Like, look,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: I'm hitting it down the fairway, right, That's what I'm doing.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: And my point about bringing up Will Campbell and that
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: he's gonna be good and no matter where he plays,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: is that I don't I don't see a bust like.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: I don't see a bust factor with him where they're
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: going to be put in a situation where in an
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: admittedly down year of a draft, especially at the top,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: and in a year where there isn't those types of
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: blue chip talents, the safest thing to do is to
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: just take the guy that's hitting it right down the fairway, right.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: So I look at Will Campbell and I think he's
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: gonna be able to hit it down the fairway no
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: matter where you end up playing him on the offensive line.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: I don't think you can say the same thing about
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: some of the other guys that we've tossed around at
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: number four, Carter and Hunter aside.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: But like for they even have their questions.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't have any questions about those two. But
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: those two aside Mason Graham. I know he's kind of
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: getting a lot of buzz right now on Patch Twitter,
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: like he's the popular guy right now. My biggest concern
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: with Mason Graham concerns I have two. One is I'm
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: not as high on Mason Graham as a run player
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: as everybody else is. I think he makes plays against
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: the run, and he flashes against the run, But if
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: you're gonna ask him to consistently hold the point of attack,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: take on double teams, and play a three down role,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: I don't necessarily watch him do that consistently with his
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: pad level and with his ability to anchor in the trenches.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: So I don't know if he's an all purpose player,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: like I don't know if he's an every down player. Now,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: maybe in their defense that they're gonna go to with Rabel,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: that's gonna be more four down and be more aggressive.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: He will be. But the comparison that I keep making
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: with him and I is it Fisk or Fisky. This
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: is gonna drive me up. But Braiden, I'm gonna say
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Fisk because Deuson Paul made fun of me yesterday. Marine
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: and said that I say it wrong. So I'm gonna
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: say Braden Fisk with the Los Angeles Rams, who came
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: in this year with the Rams and was one of
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: the most prolific, efficient interior pass rushers in the NFL
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: as a rookie, just excellent rushing the passer as a rookie.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: But he's not a run player, at least not yet.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: Like he's not consistently good against the run. Same thing
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: with Christian Barmore, like it took him a few years
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: to develop as a run player as well. Mason Graham.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: That element of it worries me a little bit. The
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: second element that worries me a little bit with Mason
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Graham is more big picture, and I think we're in
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: agreement on this, the value add of adding another interior
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: pass rusher who is more disruptor than he is production, right,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: Like who's getting the quarterback on the ground. The interior pressure,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: I get it, Hurt Brady. We hear it all the time.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Pressure at guy's feet, pressure up the middle, all those
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: types of things. I'm not saying it has no value,
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: but if you're building your team and you're building your
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: defense around two interior pass rushers in Christian Barmore and
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: Mason Graham. If you go out in free agency, you
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: absolutely now need to find the finisher. You need to
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: find the Matthew Judon, the guy that's actually gonna have
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: the double digit sax season. Maybe that's Josh Sweat. I
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: don't know, like maybe that guy exists. But if Mason
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Graham is your plan at four, and this is why
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: everything connects from free agency to the draft, if that's
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: your plan is that you're gonna build with two inside
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: guys that are gonna push the middle of the pocket,
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: and that's how you're gonna build out this defensive front,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: then you have to have somebody on the edge that's
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: gonna finish the play. And so that means going out
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: in free agency and finding that guy through free agency.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I agree with you on all that. But again,
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: just to get back to the point, like we can
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: nitpick all these guys and we're gonna do it. That's
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: what we do. But they got to take somebody. They
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: can't unless you want them to trade down so far
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: that they add a future first, like or like a
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: valuable future first, something like that, which they need talent now,
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: they can't do another year I'm okay with them doing
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: that moving down to like fifteen sixteen.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm okay with them doing that.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: And you need players, you need to start building this
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: thing up.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: And yeah, but how's that?
- 1:04:58Speaker 7: Like?
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: You you are building this.
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: Thing like I because they need to turn it around
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: now they can't do why?
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: Like what what's the rush?
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: Like?
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Is there a huge drop off between in this draft
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: who you're gonna get in foreign who you're gonna get
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: at twelve?
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: I think Abdul Carter or it's Will Campbell. Yes, they're
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: absolutely sure.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Like I'm not making that trade ahead of the draft
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: because I want I want to see how the board
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: shakes out.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: What's the difference between Campbell and Ursery?
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: But but you're not talking about Ersery at twelve. If
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: you're going down to twelve, you're still in range for
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: a Calvin Banks, you're still in range.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: You Thinkvin Kelvin Banks gets out of top ten?
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: I think you will. I I've kind of gotten when
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: I was down at the Senior Bowl. I I talked
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: to some people down there that know way more about
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: offensive line play than me, and I I think that
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: we and and and the outside might be a little
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: bit higher on Calvin Banks.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: I just think, look, they need impact players. Are those
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: players are gonna get at twelve good prospects? Yes? Are
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: they impact players?
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: No?
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: It's not this draft depending on way to board falls like,
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: is a guy at four going to be an impact player?
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: I think Campbell can be, yes, Carter obviously can be,
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: Hunter can be. Like, it's not you got to take somebody.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: You have to take somebody and they can't do another year.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: I'm not saying don't take anybody. I'm just saying that
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: I'm not in a hue.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: So okay, But to your point, is some if it's
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: not a quarterback. If it's a quarterback, that's different. If
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: there's a team down there that wants a quarterback and
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: it's going to give you multiple future first fine, is
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: a team going to give you the package you would
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: want to move down outside of.
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: The top ten, I don't know.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: And that's a fairst draft, right, You're not going to
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: get it, so you can't. It's as you know the
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Coley micktweet that I love. You can't tell Roger Goodell
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: you're drafting Jeremiah Smith fourth overall and tell them to
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: meet you in the parking lot right, you got to
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: take somebody in this draft, and this is a team
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: that needs impact players. There's not that many of them
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: in this class.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: I just wonder why not. I'm not in any huge rush,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: and I understand that we're all starving to see a good.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: They need to They need to be a little urgent.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: They need they why Like they just hired Mike Vrabel
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Drake Mayson the year two like what they what?
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: They've made the playoffs once in the last five years.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: They haven't won a playoff game since February twenty nineteen.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Sure, but they all wasn't built in a day. You're
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: not gonna all.
- 1:07:16Speaker 6: I know it was.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: And I'm not saying they need to contend for Super
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: Bowl this year, but they need to win more than
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: four games.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: Of course, they need to win more than four games.
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: But I think they're gonna win more than four games,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: just because Rabel's is a much better coach than girod Mayo. Like,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: I think they're gonna get there organically.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: The roster needs significant improvements.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: If they want to be if they want to be frisky,
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: then the roster needs significant improvements. They just want to
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: win more than four games.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: I think they need to be closer to that frisky category.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: Sure, I hear that, but they're not firing Rabele after
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: one year.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: I know they're I know, I know, but that shouldn't
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: mean complacency.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: I'm not saying complacency. I just I look at this
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: draft and it's not a strong draft at the top.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: I don't know what the big drop off is there
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: necessarily if Hunter and can't and Abdul Carter off the
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: board in the first three picks, Like, is there a
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: huge drop off from four to twelve, from four to eight,
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: from four to ten, Like, I'm not advocating for them
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: to go down to twenty five.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: Are you gonna get the pick that justifies it? Are
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: you gonna get the return that justifies it for a
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: team that needs premium positions in the reality like you're
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: in You're in a position right now to draft a
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: left tackle who is a premium prospect at that position,
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: right Yeah, And like you said, they're gonna win more
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: games this year. Just Mike Rabel's better there. You know,
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: it sounds like they're gonna make some mosing free agency
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: things like that. You you punt on that position again,
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: you're not gonna be at the top of the draft
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: to draft.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: If not, why do you why are you automatically punting
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: on that position? Again?
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: Who else are you getting?
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: Like there's not you can go into free agency and
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: Ronnie Stanley's going back. You can sign like an Aleric Jackson,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: who's a solid NFL left tackle. Is he a stud?
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Is he gonna come in here and be a top
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: five left tackle in the league. No, but he's gonna
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: be a service NFL f tackle.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: And I just then they they have to get that guy,
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: like you you understand.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: I'm not saying bring Venerian lowback.
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: There's there's gonna be one, maybe two left tackles in freegency, right,
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: It's gonna be Jackson and Robinson. Yeah, and that's it.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Like you can't with on those guys. Then if if
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: that's and I guess the orders backwards because freedencies first,
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: but like you can't leave that position unaddressed. And by unaddressed,
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: I mean like not all right, Here's three guys who
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: are all fringe starters, and you know one of them
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: is moving over from right tackle and one of them
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: is really a guard, and you know maybe no, no,
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: no one's saying a top contract, top pick.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Why can't they go out and sign alerc Jackson If
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: they don't love any of these times, right, they also
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: any of the options at four? Like, I don't understand
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: why you're you're so anti trading down, Like I think
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: this is a team that needs as many bites at
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: the Apple.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: I'm not anti trading down. I'm not and I've said that,
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: like they need more than one good player. I think
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: moving so far down in a weaker draft, like you
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: you still need you have to get the return that
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: makes that worth it.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: Sure, but I think the rebuttal to that is is.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: That I can't believe I talked myself into being the
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: anti trade down guy.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: Well, but the real thing in your point of who
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: what is a team trading up for? Is a fair right? Okay,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: But let's just operate in a world where let's say
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: it goes Carter Hunter and then the quarterbacks start, right,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: and so a team is looking is sitting there at four,
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: The Vegas Raiders are sitting there at four, you know,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: looking at the patents on the clock at four, and
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: they want to make sure that they get youa door Sanders,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: All right, then, okay, or let's let's let's push it
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: back just a little bit, just for the argument's sake. Right,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: Let's say Saint set nine, the Saints at nine call
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: up and say we're not We've got it's gone far enough.
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: We're not taking any more risks, because I do think
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: there's a really good chance that that cam ward picks
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: up a lot of steam. Now, could it end up
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: being twenty twenty two all over again, where Malik Willis
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: is looked at as a top five pick until a
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: day before the draft like that, that's absolutely possible. But
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: there's a lot of love right now for cam Warden
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: being a top five pick in this draft. So if
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: you do get you're probably not gonna get like the
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: RG three trade. It's going to be a discounted version
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: of that. But if you get that kind of trade package,
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: then you go from four to nine and a draft
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: that I believe is deeper than it is top heavy,
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: and I don't think it's a great draft in general.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: But if there's a strength of the draft, it's in
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: the depth, Like it's in the fact that there is
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: a decent run of players I would say, from like
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: fifteen to sixty or so that are all kind of
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: comparable and all pretty good in certain ways. I would
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: just much rather do that and try to get a
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: pick next year and have all this AMMO to move
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: around or to trade the one of the picks for
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: a player.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: So I guess what pick, Like, are you getting the
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: Saint's future first? Then I'm in if it's the future.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Second, if you're trading down in there, take it's a
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: quarterback pick, you're trading a quarterback pick, then you're expecting
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: to get a future.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: So I would say so if it's you know, like,
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: if it's all right, we're gonna give you nine this
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: year second and future second, No, that's not worth the drop.
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: I just I think the idea that and then at
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: nine people are gonna have the same complaint. This was
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: more my point, right. It wasn't because I'm not against
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: trading down. I'm not. Let me be clear, I'm not.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: I'm just said I'm gonna be clear I'm not. But
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: you can't trade down and then complain they got the
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: lesser player. Like there, it was more you have to pick.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: I kind of threw that comment in and I didn't
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: think it out right. There are people who were just
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: like not gonna be hat you did. There are people
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: who are not gonna be happy with whoever they take
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: in the first round because blah, bad draft.
- 1:12:41Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I was more so saying like, you can't just say, no,
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: we're not gonna pick this year, just book mark us
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: for the fourth, fourth overall pick and we'll make it
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: next year.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: When the draft patter, why like, why are you defaulting
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: to that? Nobody is saying that they're not gonna make
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: a I.
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: Know they're not saying that, but I feel like that's like,
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: deep down, people are in this pretzel of they don't
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: like any of the players, so they're just not gonna
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: be happy with whoever they take, and they're just gonna
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: call it a bad pick whoever they take, because they're
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: gonna say he's not a prospect worthy of the fourth
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: overall pick. Is that is the guy you take it
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: nine gonna be worthy? And I think this is a
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: dumb thing to do because everybody's in different drafts, but
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: to use your kind of benchmarks, is the guy you
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: take at ten gonna be worthy? Or the guy you
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: take it nine gonna be worthy of the ninth pick
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: in this generic NFL draft that people like to talk. No,
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: not necessarily, but so is there.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: Some more comfortable to.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: Is there something to be said, Well, if I'm not
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: gonna get the guy who's worth the value of the pick,
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: I'd rather pick lower and get future assets. That's where
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: I'm like, Okay, fine, if that's what you want to do,
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: trade down. But to say, well, you can't take Will
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: Campbell at four because he wouldn't have gone fourth overall
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: last year, or you can't it take at nine because
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: he wouldn't have gone ninth last.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: Year, But that's a thousand either or, right, Like, would
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: you rather so take Ted McMillan at nine, but then
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: you have a future first round pick, another midday pick.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: So sure if you if you want to, and this
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: is where this is where I framed it poorly. Yeah,
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: that either or is fine, and we're gonna spend a
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: lot of time on that on the next four months.
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: If you're just gonna tell me individual prospects aren't the
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: Patriots shouldn't take them in the first round because they're
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: not actually slated for that spot in this generic universal draft,
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: Well then then you're not gonna be able to Then
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: then all right, let the clock run out like the
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: Vikings did, and just wait, I guess just wait until
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: you're I would just.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: Feel I would feel a lot more comfortable. But a
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: lot of these players taking them a little bit laer.
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: That's fine. Like I feel like people think that I
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: don't like Tech McMillan as a prospect. I don't hate
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: Tech McMillan as a prospect. I just don't think that
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: I don't like taking him at four. So if I
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: took him at nine, I'd feel a lot better about
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: it because I'm taking him and I'm getting the package
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: from what I traded down.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: So honestly, my ideal world, my ideal world is assuming Hunter,
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: and my deal world is take at Carter. But assuming
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: Hunter and Carter go in top four, you move to six,
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: you get Campbell at six, and you get.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: I don't, So it'd be a smaller package.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: It's a smaller package the one I looked at. And
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: you know, I love to do this. I go back
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: and look at the pass trades and try to find
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: what the equivalent would be. There isn't a great one
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: in recent memory. The closest is the twenty eighteen trade
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: when the Jets moved from five to three to get
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: Sam Darnold. Yeah, and if we were there. Now, the
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: Jets had two second round picks that year, which the
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: Raiders don't have, so you have to kind of get creative.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: But you also have to consider the level of prospect
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: that Donald was vers Sanders, and that there were other
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: quarterbacks on the board the closest equivalent to me. You
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: go from four to six, you get thirty eight, and
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: you get the Raiders future seconds. So you don't get
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: the future first in this one. You're only moving down
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: too spots. But the beauty of that trade is you
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: now have thirty seven and thirty eight. You now have
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: two seconds and two two thirds. I'm gonna package one
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: of the seconds, thirty seven or thirty eight. I'm gonna
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: package that with one of the thirds, and I'm gonna
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: move up into the into the twenties. And that's the
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: ideal scenario for me. Now, who can you still get
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: Campbell at six? That would really put the bow on it.
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: If not, now it becomes another conversation. Maybe you trade
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: down again. So I'm not anti trading down, but just
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: understand they're gonna take somebody in the first round. You
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: said he didn't probably gonna be slotted over where they
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: were habit take somebody at four, and I'll have to
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: take somebody at four me, I have to take somebody
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: in the point is making you don't trade Like, Let's
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: say somebody came to you. I guess here's the hypothetical
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: that these people might like, and this is we're getting
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: nuts here. Let's say, and I hate when I do that,
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: such a pretzels. Well, no, because I say I say
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: these people, and then people on Twitter think I'm talking
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: about them.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: You people.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: Let's say, who's all right, the Saints at nines perfect example,
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: or no, who's a quarterback team that's even lower? The Steelers?
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: Where Steelers picking like eighteen nineteen something like that?
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: Right, Oh god, that we're moving down. Well, no, hang on.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: Let's say the Steelers come to you and say, we're
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: gonna we want to hold on to our first round pick,
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: but we want four. We're going to give you our
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: first round pick in the next three drafts. What do
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: you do that you don't get a first round pick
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: this year, you're picking at thirty eight, but you get
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: the Steelers next three first round picks. Yes, so that
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: might be the that's kind of the thing I'm talking about.
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: The way I look at it and then we can
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: move on because we've gotten.
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: Honestly, now, the other thing about I might do that too,
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: But the way I.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: Look at it is that in it to go back
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: to your your analogy of this generic NFL draft that
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: we always talk about, I feel like this draft in
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: a lot of ways is like starting at in a
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: good year like last year. We're really starting at like
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: four or five with the best players, right, like Abdul
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: Carter would have been after the quarterbacks last year, He's
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: probably like somewhere in that four to six rate into
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: that draft in the competition with like a Joe Alt
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: and the Milik Neighbors and all those guys. So if
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: you trade down into that five to ten range, you
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: are now taking a player in that range that probably
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: belongs somewhere in that range because you're cutting off the
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: top of the draft.
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: But are they gonna go like who's going ahead of them?
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: If there's nobody worth going ahead.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: Of them, well you're gonna lose out, probably on Campbell.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Like I'm not losing any sleepover losing out on Mason Graham,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: So maybe that's just a meeting. I'm not eight, so
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: I'm not losing any sleep over that. So I guess
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: that that's where I'm at with that sort of Saints
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: pick at nine being where I would like to be
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: at because I think a lot of the times, once
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: you get to nine, ten, eleven, twelve, you are talking
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: about prospects that are not perfect, right, No prospects perfect,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: but you know what I'm I'm getting at. So I
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: just like the idea that a lot. I like the
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: idea of trying to trade down in this draft to
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: put your self in a position where I can talk
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: myself into Ted McMillan at nine plus plus all the
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: picks that you got in the trade down, I can
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: talk myself into, you know, Will Johnson. I can talk
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: myself into a lot of guys at in this draft
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: that feel comfortable taking them there. Plus you get the
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: package from trading down. You know Tyler Warren, Like, you know,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: is he available still at nine? I could, I would
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: be down with that. I just watch them the other
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: day at diet he was terrific. Like I I'd be
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: down with that. But I'm not taking Tyler Warren at four. Sure,
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: but it might take Tyler.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: Warren at nine if you get the correct package. Yeah,
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: I could be into that I don't know if you're
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: in the package. We got to take some calls people
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: on YouTube that want to call in that the lines
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: are full.
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: Oh okay. So confidence it's important. How to have? Uh see,

- 1:20:44Speaker 1: let's get to these calls. Mike is in San Diego.
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: What's up, Mike? Mike is still there? Mike, Mike? All right, Mike,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: call back in. Sorry for keeping you on hold for
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: so long. Jesse is in Virginia, what's up? Jee?
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: Hey guys, A little long one here, but just two
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: thoughts that like your opinion on, or at least I
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: think it's worth discussing. So first, this idea that we
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: stick at four in take Travis Hunter, Okay, I'll play
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: with it for a minute. If your plan is to
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: put him at cornerback, because you, guys, get in the weeds.
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: I think you can appreciate this. Look down the road.
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: If you flex someone at four, you're planning on giving
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: them a second contract. Are we really going to put
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: two cornerbacks on with massive deals in a second contract
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: when you already have Christian Gonzales I just don't think
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: it's realistic, And a lot of people are saying he
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: had the higher ceiling at corner. I just don't know
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: why the Patriots would draft him and put him at
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: corner when you already have Christian Gonzales. If you're gonna
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: take him, you better well make him a wide receiver.
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: And two, I like this theory of hitting it down
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: the fairway finding starters in a draft that is deeper
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: than stacked with high level talent. Let me ask you
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: this question. In the scenario trading back with the Raiders,
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: would you trade back up and take a Gray Zabel
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: if I told you he was Patriot level Joe Sony
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: where you just solved the problem the left side of
- 1:22:10Speaker 3: the line with Will Campbell, who is a good Matt
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: like comp Andoe and crazed Abel who is a good
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: Joe Touny. Top question, what do you guys think?
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: Thanks Jesse, thanks for the call. Uh yeah, I mean
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: that's a great start. Yeah, on your left side. I
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: mean you have to really nail some things in freedom.
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: So you've got to get a pass rusher, you got
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: to get a receiver in the veteran market. But if
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: they were to like land those two and I think
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: offensive line is the hardest to add. And then you Yeah,
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: you move down a six and then you maybe it's
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: the trade I just talked about thirty seven, thirty eight,
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: sixty nine, seventy seven package two of those move up
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: you take Zabel at Yeah, I'd be in for that.
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: He also makes an interesting point there about Hunter and
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: that are you going to have two corners on big
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: contracts and you know maybe the Patriots and one of
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: these teams have used him as a receiver.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: Yeah, for that reason. Yeah, I've I've been pretty consistent
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: with Travis Hunter being a receiver. I would play him
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: at receiver.
- 1:23:04Speaker 4: I just.
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: To me, it's just a value thing, it's a value
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: add thing. I think he's more significant. He's going to
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: move the needle more for you being a great receiver
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: than he's going to be a great corner. And I
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: think his receiver tape is really good. I think it's
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: definitely good enough for him to play that position in
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: the NFL. So I look at it in too. The
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: caller's point not necessarily worried about Christian Gonzales and all
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: the contract side of it, but just like where you're
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: allocating your resources, you know, and I look at wide
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: receiver as a much bigger need for this team than corner.
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: I look at Travis Hunter as a pretty good wide
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: receiver prospect. I wouldn't necessarily I hate throwing around the
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: word elite, like I think elite is thrown around a
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: little bit too easily these days. But a high end
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: wide receiver prospect, let's put you that way, and I'm
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: willing to play him there. And if he wants to
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: play both ways, it's harder in that way. I would
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: say to play him, you know, maybe you play him
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: third downs on defense.
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: I don't ye kind of thing.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: It's harder. I think it's harder than having him play
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: full time corner and moonlight on offense, kind of like
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: Marcus Jones does. I think it's harder to do it
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: the other way. But if I was Travis Hunter, and
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: I've said this before, I would want to play receiver
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: because it maximizes my value in terms of gaining the
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: most money in the league.
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: I don't know that it does that.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: Do you think it does well?
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: So?
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: In short term? Yeah, but just with his build and
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: you know the Derbilly issues had in college, what's worth more?
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: Call it two wide receiver contracts or three cornerback contracts.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: Two wide receiver contract.
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: He's gonna be in the league longer as a corner.
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: He's going to be if he gets if he gets
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: paid twice at wide receiver, we're talking upwards of one
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: hundred and fifty million dollars.
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: And you don't think he can get that. Corners are
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: getting the cornerback.
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: Contract sixteen eighteen somewhere around there.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: That's no twenty million dollars Corners, You sure.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: That might be the very top of the market, but
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: there you're not gonna get five for twenty. Like you're
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: not gonna get a hundred million dollar contract playing corner,
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: Like maybe Patrick Surtan will, but like you'd have to
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: be that good.
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: Well maybe I think he's that good, maybe the corner
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: in the league.
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: All right, Uh, let's uh say.
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: Jalen Ramsey and certain or twenty four av all right,
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: I thought it was a liar.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: Now, all right, Rob is in Virginia. What's up? Rob?
- 1:25:25Speaker 7: Hey?
- 1:25:25Speaker 8: Guys, can you hear me?
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: Yes?
- 1:25:28Speaker 8: Hey? Starrya to uh keep going on with this with
- 1:25:32Speaker 8: this previst hunter talk. But I've had this thought for
- 1:25:36Speaker 8: a long time, and I was thinking, if we're gonna
- 1:25:39Speaker 8: play him, if you know, if he if he's allowed
- 1:25:41Speaker 8: to play both ways, why not play him as like
- 1:25:44Speaker 8: a deep safety. I feel like you maximize his value more.
- 1:25:49Speaker 8: You know, he's further away from the ball, you can
- 1:25:52Speaker 8: play longer in the NFL. You know, safeties play longer
- 1:25:56Speaker 8: traditionally than corners do. Again, if we're just talking about
- 1:26:00Speaker 8: season to play both ways, but I haven't heard anyone
- 1:26:04Speaker 8: ever bring that up, and I just I don't understand why. Yeah,
- 1:26:07Speaker 8: I mean, corner obviously, you know you have a more
- 1:26:10Speaker 8: direct impact on the game. But I mean again, if
- 1:26:13Speaker 8: we're talking about him playing both ways, I just feel
- 1:26:16Speaker 8: like the way to maximize both ways him on defense
- 1:26:19Speaker 8: and offense is to put him as like a deep safety.
- 1:26:22Speaker 8: So what do you guys think about that?
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: That's a good question, Rob. I think you hit it
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: though in your own response of value to the team.
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: Having a guy that shuts down his side of the
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: field or goes man to man all game long, like
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: Christian Gonzales does, it's just a lot more valuable. Unfortunately,
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: unless you're Ed Reid right playing up top at safety
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: seventy five percent of the game, you're not making an impact.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: And I understand you are in conceptually in theory as
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: a help defender and all that good stuff, but you're
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: not around the ball and the game.
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: One of Hunter's best traits is his ball skills, his
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: ability to win at the catch point, and then his
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: closing speed. You're you're not utilizing that at safety as much,
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: nearly as much as you are a corner.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, It's not a bad point though, in terms
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: of like durability and all that. But I don't think
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: there's a ton of fear in my mind in terms
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: of attrition at corner, you know, I think it's the
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: attrition part of it. For Travis Hunter comes more in
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: at receiver. You know, when he goes over the middle,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: when he you know, takes the big hits as a
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: ball carrier after the catch, Like, is he gonna have
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: the durability to do that and then also play a
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: little bit on defense? Like that's asking a lot? All right?
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: Don is in Philadelphia? What's up? Don?
- 1:27:35Speaker 9: Big guys, third time caller, a long time listener here
- 1:27:39Speaker 9: love quick question for you guys. What is your ideal
- 1:27:44Speaker 9: off season in terms of specific players, in terms of
- 1:27:48Speaker 9: draft and free agency. You know, in draft, including first
- 1:27:53Speaker 9: round pick, second round pick, you could trade back up,
- 1:27:56Speaker 9: you could trade your second round pick, and then ideally,
- 1:28:00Speaker 9: who are you guys wanting to sign in free agency?
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: Thanks for the call, Don, That is a lot to
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: unpack on a radio show, but I'll just throw out
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: a couple of names in free agency. I mentioned Aleric
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: Jackson already. Alec Jackson to me is a target regardless
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: of what their approach to the draft is, because I
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: think they need two new starting tackles, and even if
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: he ends up playing on the right side, I think
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: he can start on either side of the line for you,
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: and so he's a starter somewhere on the offensive line.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: I would look at signing him. I would definitely make
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: a run of T Higgins. I think you have to.
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: I don't think you can be picky there. You have
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: no choice.
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: In my mind, what about some of the like the
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: trade guys, like like a DK Metcalf or something gaff
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: if whatever have A J. Brown's name has been thrown
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: out there. I don't see why he's requesting a trade,
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: but that's right.
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: I would. I would skew more towards T Higgins because
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: I don't love giving up the capitol. Like I don't
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: love having to give up significant draft capital in the
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: spot that they're in right now. What if if it's
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: a great and I like DK and you know that
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: if we're talking about it being a hot like a
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: Jamar Chase, then obviously you know you I'm opening it.
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: What if it's what if it's the Brandon I you
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: trade so second or fourth and call it a future pick.
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: I think I'd rather have T Higgins.
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: Oh, I'd rather have Metcalf. And then you do like
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: I said, you do that trade with the Raiders, you
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: move down from four to six, you get they have
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: what thirty eight? So you get thirty seven with the
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: from the Raiders. So now you've replaced that, You've basically
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: traded DK Metcalf. You've moved down two spots in the
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: first round to get DK Metcalf. You replace that pick
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: in that trade.
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: I would I mean second, second, and fourth. I would
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: know it's a lot of moving parts. Like I don't
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: know if we if they could actually pull something like
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: that off. I guess maybe if you if you did
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: all of those things, then than sure, But I don't rather.
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: You know what, even without that, you're gonna get a
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: bet player better than DK Metcalf thirty eight.
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: I would just rather pay T Higgins like, oh, you're not.
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: It's Metcalf's a much better. I think Metcalf's is like
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: a significantly better receiver.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: I don't think he's as much better as you do.
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: I think he is.
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: I don't think he is. I think they're both good.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: He's been playing opposite Jamar Chase is over he.
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: Has been playing Tyler Lockett and JSN aren't scrubs.
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: Like or not Jamar Chase. No, but they're he just
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: got with against that.
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: I think Higgins' injuries are overblown. I think Higgins this
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: past year didn't have any long term security on his contract.
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: I'll give you this here. I agree with you on that,
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: but I just you know I feel about this. I
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: thought met Calf over Higgins for a while, and I'd
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: give up the draft asset.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: Yeah, but I I I think Metcalf in a vacuum
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: is probably a better player than to Higgins. But I
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: don't think it's so much better that I I want
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: to give up all this, all the draft picks to take.
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: Me all the draft kept picks. I'll give up thirty
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: eight and what is it like I'll do that.
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: I'm not sure Seattle will do that I don't know
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: what's in it for. I don't know if it's why
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: they're trading Dk Metcalf. I still don't get it because he.
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: Needs a new contract and they're so why build the
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: English team? And are they like why why are they quarterback?
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: Why are they interested in trading one of their best
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: players on their team? I just don't know.
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: This is because this is what it is now, want
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: to new contract?
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: You request, But we haven't gotten to that point yet
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: where he's like disgruntled, Like we're not at the Miles
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: Garrett point.
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: If I told you two weeks before Tyree Tyreek Hill
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: got traded that he's getting trade, he would call me nuts.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: That happened like that.
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: I wouldn't say the whole pre agen agree. I think
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: Tyreek Hill's situation was different.
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: It's the whole pre agent thing. But I think I
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: think Tyra Kill's situation was when when a but we've
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: seen it across leave with all these guys. When a
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: receiver is entering the final year in his contract, there
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: the team's always start taking offers and the idea is
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: he make him an offer good enough that they make
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: the deal.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: Okay, I I just I look at DK Metcalf and T.
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: Higgins in a similar tier. I think DK Metcalf might
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: be higher in that tier, but I don't think that
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: they're like I don't think we are comparing like Jamar
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: Chase to T Higgins, right, I think we're comparing more
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: comparable players than that. And if it's just mister Craft's money,
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: they were just cutting check, right, we felt different.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: I think about Higgins then, but yeah, I want I
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: go for the better player.
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: All right, Will is in New Jersey. What's up Will?
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: Hey?
- 1:32:10Speaker 7: Guys are hey?
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: Good?
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: Hey?
- 1:32:13Speaker 7: I just got a question. While you guys are talking
- 1:32:15Speaker 7: about receivers, what do you guys think of Trey Harris
- 1:32:18Speaker 7: from Old Next I saw that he scared the Higgins
- 1:32:22Speaker 7: from Iowa State. Obviously old myth wonky offense is just
- 1:32:26Speaker 7: a sucker for a decent amount of games. But I
- 1:32:29Speaker 7: thought he might be like a good day two day
- 1:32:31Speaker 7: three prospect for him.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: Thanks. Well, yeah, we got an email about Trey Harris too.
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: Where the email is just Trey.
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: Harris's and is your question marker?
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: Just nope, It just literally says let me find it.
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: It just says that's the entire email. Trey Harris that's it.
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: So a lot of Trey Harris talk here today. I
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: haven't done a complete review of Trey Harris yet, I
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: have seen a little bit of him. The one thing
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: that I did like about his game is that he
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: does separate at the top of the rat a little
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: bit better than I was expecting. He's got some build
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: up speed. He's not a burner per se, I would say,
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: but he's got some build up speed. But his hands
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: are really inconsistent. His ball tracking is really againstays. He
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: had a really really bad drop in the game against
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: LSU that I watched of his So I'm not anti
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: Trey Harris. On day two. I think that's the perfect
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: time for him. If he's the thirty eighth overall picked
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: by the Patriots, I'm not going to be, you know, angry,
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: Like I'm not going to be pissed at them for that.
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: But that's where about where it starts for me with
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: Tray Hairy.
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it goes back to the development thing
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: after that, Right, are they going to be able to
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: develop him? Who's the wide receivers coach? You're going to
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: hear a lot of people point out that the last
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: time Mike Rabel took one of these big, physical outside
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: receivers from Old Miss. It went pretty well for him,
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: and I think they're very different players. I think so too,
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: You're and hear a lot of people talk about that.
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: I'm worried about the development as a whole, just any
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: receiver thirty eight. I kind of already said that, but
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: Trey Harris doesn't treat.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that those two guys are very different players.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: I don't see Trey Harris as the yak monster that
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: AJ Brown is like. You know, I think that Trey
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: Harris is more He's going to get his yards on
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: air yards. He's not going to get his yards.
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: On A J.
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: Brown viewed as that guy coming out.
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: Yeah, a J.
- 1:34:18Speaker 9: Brown.
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: I can never remember what A J. Brown's pre draft.
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: Everybody was in on Metcalf. AJ Brown was the other guy.
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: So A J.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: Brown was always considered like a running back playing wide receiver.
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: Always very good in that way. I think a lot
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: of the draft conversations with him were actually against like
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: Nikhil Harry and Deebo Samuel because those members were pretty
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: similar in terms of their skill sets. Obviously it did
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: not go the Patriots way, but yeah, that that was
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: one of them, just really quickly. And I know we
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: got a lot of calls and I'm going to get
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: to all of them on this an email Jake emailed
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: in here, a very long winded email claiming that, yes,
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: I'm unfiltered. I said that I would take Will Campbell
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: over Travis Hunter if Will Campbell checks out as a tackle.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: I don't remember saying that if I did. If I
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: did say that, then I misspoke or something like that.
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: So I'm not going to read your whole email, Jake,
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: which is very thorough. I appreciate that, because I'm just
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: gonna say that that was not the take. But I
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: would take Will Campbell at four of his if his
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: arms check out. But no, I have Travis Hunter and
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: Abdull Carter and a tear of their own in this draft.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: Let's see, let's get to some of these emails, because
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: you know, we got emails and we got calls, so
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: there's a lot going on here. There's the other one
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: that I wanted to bring up. Oh man, all right,
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: So this person emailed and about Todd Downing. He said,
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: probably my least favorite higher of this is Todd Downing
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: and how hard this system is to coach wide receivers.
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: We went over that a little bit earlier on in
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: the show. I think we're we're both an agreement. I'm not.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: We're not saying that. I think it's gonna be an
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: absolutely terrible hire necessarily, but if we had to pick,
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: if I had to pick, I would say that was
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: my least favorite higher of this class. All right, we've
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: heard a lot of this as well. I'm sure you
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: have as well, about trading Joe Milton and what the
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: Patriots could potentially get for Joe Milton. Where do you
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: stand on that? Do you see them shopping Joe Milton?
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: You know what's your temperature on that?
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: So I wouldn't be in a rush to do it.
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: I look, there's teams that want quarterbacks, and they have
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: their rankings, and you know, Sam Darnold's going to be
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: out there, we think, and Kirk Cousins might get traded
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: from Atlanta, and you got the guys in the drafts
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: and all that and slowly, but there's gonna be more
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: teams I think that want quarterbacks and quarterbacks available, so
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: teams are gonna have to go further down that list.
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: So wouldn't trade Joe Milton right away. I'd let the
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: market kind of set itself. If somebody were to offer
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: a top one hundred pick, which for Joe Milton, which
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: might sound out landish, but given the lack of quarterbacks
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: available this offseason, I don't think is impossible. If somebody's
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: gonna give you, like a third round pick for Joe Milton,
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: i'd probably do that. Anything less, I think i'd wait
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: another year unless there's maybe like a package or somebody's
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: gonna give you a bunch of picks because they.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: Need a back.
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: They're gonna need a backup quarterback, Like that's still a
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: spot you need, and if you trade Joe Milton for
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: what a fifth round pick, you're probably just gonna end
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: up turning around and using that pick on a backup quarterback,
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: and I don't know that that's worth it at that point.
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: I'd hold on Milton developing for another year, and maybe
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: he gets another showcase game or just a really good preseason,
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: and now maybe trading him for a top one hundred
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: pick becomes more realistic. So I'd continue to let you
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: know that investment pay out, and I'd let Milton grow
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: because they're gonna need It's not like you know if
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: Jacobe was coming back, it would be another story. But
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: what are you using on a back? What are you
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: gonna use on a backup quarterback? If it's just a
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: pick you're getting for Joe Milton, that doesn't seem worth
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: it to me. I'd let the guy continue to grow internally.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: And how what we think is a good backup for
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: Drake may So I'm not against it, but I'm not
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: against them doing it. And I think they should take
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: calls and consider it and all of that. But and
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: you know, I want to see Joe Milton go somewhere.
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: He's gonna have a chance to really start. But I
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: wouldn't be in a rush to move him either, you know,
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: if a team's gonna get desperate. Sure, I think if
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: you let this play out another year or two and
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: Joe Milton balls out in preseason, I do think you
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: can get a top one hundred pick for him eventually.
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: I think that's possibility. I don't think it's a guarantee,
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: but I think it's a possibility. I would take my
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: time and wait and see.
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: I'm not trading Joe Milton unless I get absolutely blown
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: away by an offer. I think it's extremely valuable to
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: have two quarterbacks that you think can play.
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: So would you trade him for a third.
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: That one? I'd have to think about it. That's a
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: good question.
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: So you're maybe even a little more hesitant than I am.
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: Somebody's gonna give me like the eightieth pick in the draft.
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: I probably do that.
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: So I want to table this with saying that I
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: don't think that anybody's gonna give you the AIH overall.
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: I don't think so either. For I don't think so either.
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: I think we're getting way ahead of our You said
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: blown away, I have to get blown away. Yeah, so
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: is that blown away? It's right on, that's like that,
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: that's over under, like that's like right there for me.
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: Let me pull up the draft order, we'll see you.
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: I gotta be honest, and you know you know that
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: I I've sort of come over to this side of
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: the street. Uh, I'm not. I'm not a big draft
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: picks guy. Like I'm not as enamored as I used
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: to be because we go into in depth in the
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: draft as much as anyone. I've seen the Patriots. Just
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: how many times are they So we're gonna take the
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: eightieth overall pick, and he's gonna turn into Chase Winovich,
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: like I I'd rather I'd rather have Joe Miller. Right,
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: you know, we're gonna take the eightieth overall pick, and
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: he's gonna be Kaden Wallace, and I'd rather have Joe Mill.
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: I think you can.
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: And now we're getting into kind of the NBA philosophy,
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: have it. You can package the picks. Let's see here,
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: so top of the fourth round, Cleveland, Tennessee, New York.
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: All they're gonna have a chance to get quarterbacks, though,
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: so they don't.
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: Let's see, he's still he's still an early Day three picks.
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: The Saints at ninety three, Saints call off for ninety
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: three for Joe Milton.
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: No, I'm Joe Milton.
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: The Jets at ninety two. No, I also would't trade him.
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: Who else needs a quarterback here? The Steelers at eighty three,
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: send them to Pittsburgh.
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: No, I'm kipping them all right. I think it needs
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: to be. I think I think blown Away all right
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: is second or high.
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: The Raiders at seventy three, The Raiders at sixty eight,
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: How about the Raiders of sixty eight? No, No, you're
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: you're staunching me. I want to find where you're lying
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: is hang on, Yeah, No, Panthers is a new quarterback.
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: What am I talking about? Steelers at fifty two would
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: be the next quarterback back.
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: That's the thing, I'm att.
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: So there you go.
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: There's so much value.
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: I agree with you.
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: There's so much value in having a cost controlled backup
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: that you think has upside. Like I think that's the
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: that is the ideal backup quarterback rookie contract with upside. Yeah,
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: we're not talking about Chase Daniel, talking about a guy
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: that has a ceiling. And I think there's a ton
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: of value in that. And as much as I love
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: Drake May, we love Drake May, I'm not crowning Drake
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: May yet.
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: Right, So, And and the other thing is Joe Milton's
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: not going anywhere. Yeah, if he was, if he was
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: entering the final year of his contract.
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: When we get to like the Jimmy G Jacolia Brissett
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: situation three years from now, then.
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: We'll if Joe Milton's entering the final year of his
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: contract to be a very different conversation. If Matt Castle,
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: they held on to Matt Castle all the way through,
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: right he was, I think he had one or two
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: years left on his seal at that when I was
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: before the preset rookie contracts. But no, I'm with you.
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: I'd have to be I think you'd have to be
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: blown away more than me. But I have to be
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: blown away to trade Joe Milton. I'd take the calls.
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: I would take the calls, and I'm like, make calls,
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: but but not just giving him away.
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: But to your point, then how are you addressing backup quarterback?
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: And wouldn't you at the end of the day, then
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: I have to just use another draft pick on a
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: backup if I'm.
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: Getting if I'm getting a third round draft pick, and
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: I can draft my backup in the fifth. Okay, So
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: I moved up two rounds like that, you know, you
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: move up seventy spots. Now I'm in if I'm trading
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: Joe Milton for a fourth and I'm getting a fifth back,
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: and then I'm taking the backup with the fifth. All right,
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: I moved up maybe thirty five spots if it's the
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: full round, like that's it. On day three, that's completely different.
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I hear you.
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: So there is a point where it's like, oh, I
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: have to replace my backup quarterback. Final do it for
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: the pick you're giving me, yes, yeah, or maybe it's
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: what if you get like you know, so maybe this
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: is the way you do it. I get a third
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: and a fifth, so now I get the fifth to
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: replace my backup quarterback, and now I have the third.
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: I just I I never give away quarterbacks that have upside.
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: If I'm a team, if I'm the GM, I'm doing that.
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: I'm with you, all right.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: Steve here emails in and says that he's a little
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: bit concerned with all of the different philosophies and coaching
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: trees on the offensive side of the ball. We touch
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: on this briefly a little bit, you know, and he's
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: his concern, which I think is valid, is that he's
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: worried about wires getting crossed and you know, mixed signals
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: and things like that with with all the different languages
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: and things like that. So to that, Steve, I I
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: think that's a valid concern. Thomas Brown, West Coast guy,
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: Doug Morone, I would say, Sean Payton, you know, Bill.
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: O'Brien, like he's also just been in the league long
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: enough that.
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that's he's had a lot of overlap with this
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: kind of offense. But Thomas Brown is the past game
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: coordinator is a West Coast guy, Ashton Ashton Grant, right,
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: the reported quarterbacks coach is coming from Cleveland. He's a
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: West Coast guy. I get all that this the buck
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: stops with McDaniels and Mike Rabel, Like this is on
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: those two guys, especially Rabel, to say, this is the playbook,
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: this is the language, this is what we're speaking. You
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: guys have to adjust like that. It's not on McDaniels
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: to adjust. It's not It's on Ashton Grant, and it's
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: on Doug Moron, and it's on Todd Downing, and it's
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: on Thomas Brown, and that's we'll see how that works out.
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: We'll see how that works out. But it's on those
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: guys to do that. And we also got an email
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: from Henry here with a couple of names that he
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: wants to throw out there, and one of them we've
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: talked a lot about, Mason Graham today, Josh Simmons, we've
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: talked a lot about. But one guy that he does
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: mention here too that I wanted to talk about was
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: Jalen Walker from Georgia, who I also watched in my
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: last batch of watching prospects I think that there's a
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: really windy road to get to the point where Jalen
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: Walker is a Patriot, Like it involves a trade down
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: and it evolves free agency getting hit out of the
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: park where you really don't have any holes, which is
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: hard to believe that we're going to get to that'd
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: be nice. And so there's a lot of different ways
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: and avenues and windy roads that you have to get
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: to to get to Jalen Walker. That being said, Jalen
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: Walker just in a vacuum really screams like a Rabel
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: Patriot linebacker because he kind of plays a little bit
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: like Mike Rabel, like he can play.
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: On the line five the line, you're the third. So
- 1:45:06Speaker 2: I've only heard three comps for Jalen Walker from three
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: different people, and they've all been Patriots linebackers, but they
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: were all different. I heard grod Mao, I heard Kyle
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: van Noy, and now Mike Rabel.
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: So if I had to comp him to a Patriots
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: linebacker from all avenues, it's grod Mayo. I think from size,
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: he's going to measure out roughly like girod Mao did,
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: and he can play inside, he can play on the line,
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: of scrimmage. He can blitz. From everything that you've heard,
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: he's like this very lauded leader and captain and all
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: that kind of stuff as well. Uh Rabel did did
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: it similarly to Mayo, but it was different eras kind
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: of and they got lighter and with Mayo than with Rabel.
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: So he's not gonna be as quite as big as
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: as Mike Rabel is. He's probably gonna come in at
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: like six two, six three and forty five pounds from
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: that standpoint, a lot like Gid Mayo, a lot like
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: Dante High Tower, just in terms of role. You know
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: where you're gonna play him on the defensive front. I
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: just look at a guy like Rabel though, and and
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: just everything that Jalen Walker can do for you defensively
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: in the front seven, play the edge, play in sideline, backer,
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: rush in line, blitz up the middle, drop into coverage,
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: cover running backs like that. Those types of guys are
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: the types of guys that typically, you know, Belichick guys
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: gravitate towards.
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: So I don't know if we're gonna do recency bias
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: players today, but I have one that I guess would
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: be day two. Jalen Walker. Yeah, I can give it now,
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: just give it. Chris Paul from Old Miss, who was
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: one of the best players at the Shrine Bowl, is
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: a little bit smaller. I think he came in and
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: he's like six one twenty six, so he's on that
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: smaller side. But if you're playing him next to Juwan Bentley, right,
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: this is a guy that can play sideline. A sideline
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: is a plus player in coverage. You can get after
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: the quarterback. He's not a great run defender, but he
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: can like be out there. Yeah, he's a second round
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: you know, projected second third round pick, middle of the
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: day two because just people don't take linebackers high anymore.
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: But I think he's tremendously talented. He might trying to think.
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: I feel like I'm missing somebody. He's definitely like a third,
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: top three to four linebacker in this draft. You know,
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: I wouldn't put him ahead of Walker, who else? I'm
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: blanking on a name, but I'll remember it. But I
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: think that kind of player works if you like Jalen Walker.
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: But like you said, just the how that works out
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: with where he's projected to go and where the Patriots
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: are is tough. Chris Paul is a guy to know
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: and then you know he was my recent guy a
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: couple of months ago. Barrett Carter from Clemson is another one. Yeah,
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: I was missing the kid from UCLA Swessinger.
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: Those are probably the four best linebackers.
- 1:47:47Speaker 7: In the draft.
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: So Jalen Walker just to wrap it up on him.
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: Yeah, if I had, oh, g Hod Campbell, that's why
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: I was missing g Campbell from Alabama.
- 1:47:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: If I had to pick a Patriot from the past
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: to content, it would be drawn. I think you was
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: a lot like Dirod Mayo, and it's probably gonna go
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: in a similar spot of the draft. Is Girod Mayo?
- 1:48:05Speaker 7: Uh?
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: The other one that I had mentioned quickly from Georgia
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: is Mikel Williams, who again, if you're gonna do that
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: trade down to nine or ten, really raw, really raw.
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: Now Georgia always has that issue. I hate how Georgia.
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: Uh they they they new to their ed rushers at Georgia.
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: They don't let those guys rush. It's annoying, but they'll
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: line them up head up over the tackle, and it's
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: it's obviously tougher to get on the edge head up
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: over the tackle, so it hurt it hurt Trayvon Walker
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: a lot. It hurt Mikeel Williams a lot. But Mikeel
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: Williams is one of those guys that's really toolsy, really raw. Uh.
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: Not quite as as like freakishly athletic as Trayvon Walker was.
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: But in a similar mold, I would say to Trayvon Walker,
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: you give him to Terrell Williams and Mike Rable like
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: they they're gonna take that ball of clay and turn
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: him into a good player. Yeah. I know that, but again,
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: this is trade down scenarios. This is you know, things
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: fallowing a certain way to get to that point. One
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: last one about the current roster, and then we'll take
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: these last calls and we'll wrap it up. Uh. This
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: is a question from Sean and Vancouver, who's a big
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: time listener. I always appreciate that he says he's concerned
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: about Ramondre Stevenson and his fumbling. So what can the
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: Patriots do to help Rimandra Stevenson with his fumbling issues.
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: I'm not super concerned with Ramondre's fumbling issues because I
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: trust Frable. I think that they're going to recognize that
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: Ramondre Stevenson needs to be here. He needs to be
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: a part of their offense. He needs to be a
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: big part of their offense in terms of volume and
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: whether it's doing the Kevin fulk where you put the
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: arm the arm bands on or uh, you know, you
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: get him like the program and he's carrying the football
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: around the facility. A Damian Harris tried that whatever it is,
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: you know, holding the ball in a different spot, you know,
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: just in terms of where he holds the football. Remember
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: Tiki Barber used to hold it like weirdly, like all
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: the way up here, like whatever the case may be.
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: To get the fumbling issues out, I have confidence that
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: in this coaching staff that they're gonna kind of throw
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: the kitchen sink at that.
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: I also think some of it, like it wasn't a
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: long time issue for Stevenson. He fumbled seven times total
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: over his first three seasons and like four hundred something carries,
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: and then he fumbled seven times last year alone, So
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: I think some of it's just workload. You know, I'm
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: huge on this that vermondra Stevenson's been overworked. McDaniel's always
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: very good about making sure his running backs are not overworked.
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: So I think that in in you know, some shape
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: or formal help take care of it. You just hope
- 1:50:36Speaker 2: it's not a mental issue at this point.
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: Yep. Agreed. All right, let's get back to the calls.
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: Andy is in Sudbury. What's up, Andy?
- 1:50:45Speaker 5: Hey, guys?
- 1:50:46Speaker 2: How are you hey?
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: Good?
- 1:50:48Speaker 7: Good?
- 1:50:48Speaker 2: Good?
- 1:50:49Speaker 6: So?
- 1:50:49Speaker 4: I just have a question about wide receivers in the draft.
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: Sure, yeah, yeah, go gotch you go U.
- 1:51:01Speaker 8: So, yeah, I have a question about wide receivers in
- 1:51:04Speaker 8: the draft.
- 1:51:05Speaker 4: I mean I would I would like Ted McMillan with
- 1:51:08Speaker 4: the fourth overall picks, but I could stand trading down
- 1:51:12Speaker 4: to get him or one of Savion Williams, Jack Dick
- 1:51:16Speaker 4: or Pray Harris. What are your thoughts on them?
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: Thanks guys, nice nice list. I I wish that save
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: On Williams participated in the Senior Bowl. I know he didn't,
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: which was a bummer. A lot of that depends with
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: Jack Beck, I think, in particular on what kind of
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: offense they're going to be. If they're really going to
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: try to like ramsify this offense and be that sort
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: of scheme, then Jack bec makes all of sense in
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: the world. Like the Rams putting Cooper Cup on the
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: trade block. A couple of days after Jack Beck had
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: a great week at the Senior Bowl. Does not get
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: lost on me. Like he is a RAMS wide receiver,
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: he is a Puka Nakua clone. I don't know if
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: he's gonna be as good as Puka is, but he's
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: built like that. He can block, he can play inside
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: in those type you know, formations and things like that.
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: He goes over the middle. He's good in at yak
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: he's good at at the catch point. Like he's a
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: RAMS types of a receiver, he's a Niners type of receiver.
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: So if that's the type of offense that you want
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: to run, then I think that he's a great fit
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: for it. I don't think he's a great fit for
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: the traditional McDaniels offense in what role, in either role,
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: because I.
- 1:52:25Speaker 2: Just don't think he could be that like Jacoby Meyers power.
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: Slot maybe, but I don't. I don't look at his
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: route running as like precise enough. I think he's more
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: of what he's a power slot like. I think he
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: wins more with physicality and and with just overwhelming ability.
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: I think that's probably like the difference between him and
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: and Puka to me, Like Puka is a lot more
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: technical than what I saw to Jack Beck. Now maybe
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: Beck gets there, you know with training and things like that,
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: but yeah, I would say that that that he's more
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: in that mold. If that's the type of offense they
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: want to run. If they want to run the mcdani
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: annuel's traditional Patriots offense, they need IQ players, they need
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: great route runners, they need uh you know, like Diala
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: State guys like Restrepo, like Matthew Golden from Texas, Like
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: those are the types of guys that I would grab
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: some of them.
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: I got Kyle Williams, who's still like eight hundred something
- 1:53:17Speaker 2: on the big bed for some reason.
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: And as for Savion Williams, love the player fascinates the
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: hell out of me. McDaniels is not does not have
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: a good history scheme touch guys.
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: So on a scale of one to Leviska chanal T,
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: where does he fall on that that scale?
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: Because he reminds me a little bit of isn't isn't
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: isn't the scale really on a scale from Nikhil Harry
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: to Cordero Patterson.
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: Yeah good, Yeah, Yeah, that's right.
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: So I guess that, like if you told me they
- 1:53:43Speaker 2: were gonna draft him as Cordero Patterson, they were gonna
- 1:53:45Speaker 2: use him as a running back and h you know,
- 1:53:46Speaker 2: slot receiver, I'd be a little more in if they
- 1:53:48Speaker 2: were going to try to turn him into like an X,
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: I'd be pretty worried. He's better than Leviska shanal Okay.
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: I just worry that he is one of those He's
- 1:53:57Speaker 2: a gadget player, He's a graduet. He's a massive popped
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: up clist basically.
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: Right, because well, you read his scouting report and I
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: haven't done a ton of work on him yet, but
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: you just read a scouting report and like it's like, oh,
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: well he can play running back, and he can you know,
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: you can use him on scheme touches and so like,
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: Cordell Patterson is kind of the comp. I don't think
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: he's as explosive on kick returns and things like that
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: as Cordelia. Yeah, yeah, I think that there's that's the
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: comp all right. Uh feels like Mark in Connecticut. Mark,
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: I feel like you end the show as the last
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: caller every week. I like that.
- 1:54:30Speaker 5: I appreciate you guys as always just had too quick,
- 1:54:35Speaker 5: just had two quick things for you. I am quite
- 1:54:39Speaker 5: surprised and shocked and I wanted to know if you
- 1:54:41Speaker 5: guys had any intel, why would the organization want to
- 1:54:45Speaker 5: relieve these two guys of their duties, Troy Brown and
- 1:54:49Speaker 5: Matthew Slater, which they have been great, I think, pieces
- 1:54:53Speaker 5: for this organization of all time, and I just don't
- 1:54:57Speaker 5: get why they would want to relieve them. And maybe
- 1:55:00Speaker 5: they're bringing to Wes Welker.
- 1:55:02Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:55:02Speaker 5: I would love to see that. And then the other
- 1:55:04Speaker 5: thing is Josh Simmons. Would he be available at the
- 1:55:07Speaker 5: end of the first round if the Patriots try to
- 1:55:10Speaker 5: move up into the first round into the back of
- 1:55:12Speaker 5: the first round like they tried to last year. And
- 1:55:15Speaker 5: I appreciate you guys always.
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: Thanks Matt Mark, We appreciate the call. So on the
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: first point with the coaching staff, Troy Brown had quite
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: the fall from grace. You know, he was on the
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: up and up, and wide receivers coach didn't go great
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: for him. I think he's a really good returners coach.
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: The Patriots have had good returners. Obviously, Marcus Jones is
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: a good returner in his own right, but I think
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: he's actually done pretty well. When Marcus joneses been hurt
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: and things like that, with developing returners, but wide receivers
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: coach didn't go so well for him and it kind
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: of stunted his growth from there. Matthew Slater is an
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: interesting one, but I don't believe that him and Rabel
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: ever really overlapped here, right because Rabel was gone by
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: the seven oh eight and then Slater came in as
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: a draft pick, so they don't have a relationship. Now.
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: Could Matthews Slater have stuck on his as a special
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: teams coach, Absolutely, but his role on Drod Mayo's staff
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: was a lot is more of like an assistant to
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: the head coach advisor type of role as well. He
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: was very involved in that sort of thing. And my
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: take on that is just I think Matthew Slater is
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: being replaced by people closer to Rabel and more confidance
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: of Abel, like a stretch John Striker or Ryan Cowden
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: in the front office or things like that.
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: And I also wonder with Slater, like, I didn't he
- 1:56:27Speaker 2: say something before he retired to like he didn't think
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: he was going to go into coaching right away? Yeah,
- 1:56:31Speaker 2: and then obviously he did. We were all kind of
- 1:56:32Speaker 2: surprised by that, and maybe just wanting to take a
- 1:56:34Speaker 2: step back by the way you mentioned when you read
- 1:56:36Speaker 2: saving on William's scouting report. Yes, the thirty third team
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: just put theirs up. You want this, you want to
- 1:56:43Speaker 2: I'm just curious your reaction positives. Powerful frame offer, straight
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: line explosiveness and contact balance with the ball in his hands,
- 1:56:50Speaker 2: Supreme versatility as a direct snap backfield player, alignment at
- 1:56:55Speaker 2: running back and ability to split wide. Impressive contested catch
- 1:56:58Speaker 2: resume across entire body of work to win at the catchpoint. Negatives.
- 1:57:02Speaker 2: Drop rate exceeds ten percent for his career, some frustrating
- 1:57:06Speaker 2: lapses of routine opportunities. Refinement as a route runner requires
- 1:57:10Speaker 2: work played in a college spread system with plenty of
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: soft coverage. Does not illustrate desired run blocking contributions on
- 1:57:16Speaker 2: the perimeter that his frame may suggest. He's listed at
- 1:57:19Speaker 2: sixty five two twenty five unofficial pro comparison Cordero Patterson.
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: So the only difference between that scouting report and what
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: Cordero Patterson turned into. Yeah, I wouldn't say Cordell Patterson's
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: a great contested catch guy. So if Xavion Williams is
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: going to add that on top of Cordero Patterson's skill set.
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: But again, I don't think he's as explosive as Patterson is.
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: But if that's the skill set, then I am more
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: intrigued by it. But the receiver that you just described
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: is anti Josh McDaniels.
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: Its completely one hundred percent. Yeah, yeah, like that is
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: not the guy that's thrived with Josh. Another one draft network,
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: diverse release package, explosive, great short area, quickness, position, versatile playmaker, concerns,
- 1:58:04Speaker 2: raw route runner concentration drops, lack of production. Do they
- 1:58:08Speaker 2: have a comparison, uh, comparison? They mentioned Deebo Samuel in
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: the right up, but not as a direct comparison. That's
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: probably the ceiling. And then I look Bleacher report as
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: a ton of plus and negatives. Their comparison Chase Claypool.
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: Okay, I think Chase Claypool that would be better at
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: the catch point.
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: That also, like that takes out the whole reason saving
- 1:58:30Speaker 2: On Williams has all this value is because of the versatility.
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: So he has Chased Claypool as a receiver. Like, I
- 1:58:35Speaker 2: can see that comparison, but there is more to him
- 1:58:39Speaker 2: than that.
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, really quickly, super Bowl pick who you got?
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: Eagles Chiefs.
- 1:58:45Speaker 2: It's just dumb the pick against the Chiefs at this point.
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: But it is.
- 1:58:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I you know, heart says Eagles, but I you know,
- 1:58:55Speaker 2: go birds and all that. But I think the Chiefs
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: are I've had fun saying go Birds. I slogan yeah,
- 1:59:01Speaker 2: like co Bird's big always sunny guy too. I yeah,
- 1:59:04Speaker 2: I think the Chiefs are gonna win. So this game,
- 1:59:07Speaker 2: to me, it's it's it's it's hard without Kyle Shanahan.
- 1:59:09Speaker 2: It's so easy when I can just be like, oh,
- 1:59:11Speaker 2: the Niners are gonna get a lead and then lose.
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: Okay, all right. I don't know why Kyle Shanahan had
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: to take a stray.
- 1:59:16Speaker 2: There, because that was my bet last year.
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: The Eagles have a better football team.
- 1:59:20Speaker 2: They do.
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: The Eagles have a better roster top to bottom. But
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: what this is going to come down to is two things. One,
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: can the Chiefs stop Sakuon Barkley. They're not gonna stop
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley. It's not gonna blow them down, slow them down.
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: And really what it is is can they limit the
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: explosives because Barkley's a really good at turning a ten
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: yard run into a sixty yard run When you're playing
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: the Eagles, you gotta get him on the ground. You
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: can't allow him to take those big runs like he didn't.
- 1:59:50Speaker 2: It was like Chris Jones and Barkley's like the best
- 1:59:52Speaker 2: magic the first.
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: The first play from scrimmage and the NFC Championship game,
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: he takes it to the house. You can't have those
- 1:59:58Speaker 1: types of plays against the Eagles. If you you can
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: get the Eagles into third and pass, then Steve Spagnolo
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: is gonna come after Jalen Hurts. We know that Jalen
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: Hurts is one of the worst passers in the league
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: under pressure in terms of how good he is that
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: when kept clean versus under pressure, that delta of those
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: two things one of the worst in the league at it.
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: So the game comes down to for the Chiefs, can
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: they get Philadelphia an obvious pass? Because if they can
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: get Philadelphia an obvious pass, Spagnolo can do his thing.
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: He can spin the dial in the pass rush and
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: he can get Jalen Hurts under pressure, and the and
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: the Eagles are gonna have a tough time. In conclusion,
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: I'm taking the Chiefs.
- 2:00:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: I think at the end of the day, too much.
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: Steve Spagnolo and too much, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid.
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: The coaching I just trusted so much at this point.
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: It's so consistent, it's so good. I just don't see
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: how a Nick Siriani coaching staff, even though I love
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: Vic Fangio, I don't see how Nick Sirianni coaching staff
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: out coaches that that brain trust.
- 2:00:56Speaker 2: I just don't Who wins the next Super Bowl next year? Yeah,
- 2:01:01Speaker 2: San Francisco forty nine ers? No, no way.
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: And on that note, we will be back next week,
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: same time, same place. We might talk a little bit
