Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / Inside The Tape With Greg Cosell: "Everything Changed When Mitchell Went Out"
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello, welcome back to Inside the Tape on Inside the Birds.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher. I've got Adam Kaplan with me. And,
- 0:14Speaker 1: of course, we've got Greg Cosell to continue to break
- 0:17Speaker 1: down the tape of an Eagles 24-20 loss to the
- 0:20Speaker 1: Rams on Sunday in Week 4. In the last episode,
- 0:24Speaker 1: we went through the offense. Now, Greg, we've got to
- 0:26Speaker 1: sift through the carnage of a defense that finally... finally
- 0:30Speaker 1: produced some takeaways, kind of carried the offense on its
- 0:33Speaker 1: back for about two and a half, three quarters. And
- 0:36Speaker 1: then when it came down to it at the end there,
- 0:38Speaker 1: they just A, ran out of bodies at important positions
- 0:42Speaker 1: and then ran out of some gas. But what was
- 0:44Speaker 1: your overall impression of the defense for most of the
- 0:47Speaker 1: game until that last stretch there?
- 0:48Speaker 2: Well, you know, it's funny.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Believe it or not, I thought that for me, everything
- 0:53Speaker 3: changed to some extent when Mitchell went out.
- 0:57Speaker 2: And that was the first play of the second half.
- 1:00Speaker 3: And then it was just a few plays later when
- 1:03Speaker 3: Devontae Adams just beat Jones when they were playing cover
- 1:07Speaker 3: one and Stafford just overthrew him. And I think that
- 1:12Speaker 3: scared Vic. I think Vic felt like, you know what,
- 1:16Speaker 3: I don't know how much cover one I can play.
- 1:18Speaker 3: You know, we're going to have to play some zone because,
- 1:21Speaker 3: you know, they play right and left corner because, you know,
- 1:24Speaker 3: Wolin's the left corner, Mitchell's the right corner. So when
- 1:27Speaker 3: Jones came in, and Jones is only about 5'10, And
- 1:29Speaker 3: now you're dealing with big wide receivers on the Rams.
- 1:32Speaker 3: And I think that that play, I think it was
- 1:34Speaker 3: on the first possession of the third quarter. And, and
- 1:37Speaker 3: I don't know what's in Vic's head, but that was
- 1:39Speaker 3: my sense watching the tape. I feel like everything changed
- 1:42Speaker 3: after that. It became almost all zone, um, four man
- 1:47Speaker 3: pass rush, you know, hardly any, even, even, I mean,
- 1:50Speaker 3: obviously there was some SIM pressures and a lot of
- 1:53Speaker 3: those SIM pressures were geared up the middle. I think
- 1:55Speaker 3: it was three or four times in the game that
- 1:57Speaker 3: they had both, um, both linebackers, Trotter and Campbell, you know,
- 2:03Speaker 3: be double-A gap guys, and they would drop out both ends.
- 2:07Speaker 3: So they were sim pressures, meaning four-man rushes. But I
- 2:11Speaker 3: almost felt like it was the second half that really
- 2:14Speaker 3: was told the tale because I think he changed up
- 2:17Speaker 3: the way he would have played if Mitchell had not
- 2:19Speaker 3: gotten hurt.
- 2:20Speaker 1: So Adam and I started texting each other when Mitchell
- 2:23Speaker 1: came out. Watch how fast they start challenging– Jonathan Jones
- 2:27Speaker 1: and what was it four straight plays and then they
- 2:30Speaker 1: probably should have hit on a touchdown if Stafford doesn't
- 2:33Speaker 1: overthrow it just a little bit I mean they really
- 2:34Speaker 1: went after.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Him yeah that was that was third and five on
- 2:38Speaker 3: their first third quarter possession he easily beat Jones on
- 2:41Speaker 3: a stutter fade but Stafford just overthrew him I mean
- 2:44Speaker 3: and I that's where I thought you know Vic kind
- 2:47Speaker 3: of said whoa uh you know I'm not sure I
- 2:50Speaker 3: want to be playing much man coverage.
- 2:52Speaker 4: Greg their pass rush to me still is a problem.
- 2:55Speaker 5: I know they discipline the first half, but do you
- 2:59Speaker 5: just sense like, and then Gronar got hurt, you know, before.
- 3:01Speaker 4: He got hurt, at least seemed like he was starting
- 3:03Speaker 4: to get home a little bit.
- 3:04Speaker 2: What did he hurt in the game?
- 3:07Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Did Gronar get hurt in the game?
- 3:09Speaker 4: He hurt his ankle. I don't think he played the
- 3:10Speaker 4: second half. I'm pretty sure.
- 3:11Speaker 2: He only played 19 snaps. You're right.
- 3:13Speaker 4: He didn't play in the second half.
- 3:14Speaker 3: So they don't really have a pass rush. And, you know,
- 3:18Speaker 3: once again, And again, I don't know if he still
- 3:21Speaker 3: is battling injuries, but it's irrelevant.
- 3:23Speaker 2: He's playing. But Jalen Carter is having a hard time
- 3:26Speaker 2: winning one-on-one against offensive guards right now.
- 3:30Speaker 4: With the wrap on his wrist.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I mean, I'm watching.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Before we started doing this, I'm finishing up watching the
- 3:38Speaker 3: 49ers offense versus the Broncos defense. And I can tell
- 3:42Speaker 3: you just watching the tape that right now Jalen Carter
- 3:45Speaker 3: is not even in the same conversation with Zach Allen.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Not even in the same conversation. Yeah. The way they're
- 3:50Speaker 2: playing right now.
- 3:52Speaker 1: And I think we saw another return of Moro Ajomo
- 3:54Speaker 1: getting so many more snaps.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, I made a note of that.
- 3:59Speaker 3: As you guys saw, you know, look again, it's not
- 4:02Speaker 3: a rip. We're not ripping anybody, but they're telling us, you.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Know, we don't have to, Adam knows this.
- 4:08Speaker 3: They tell you what they think, but Jomo played 60
- 4:10Speaker 3: snaps and Davis played 29 snaps. So, you know, they
- 4:16Speaker 3: paid Davis a lot of money. I don't think they
- 4:18Speaker 3: paid him a lot of money to play 29 snaps.
- 4:21Speaker 3: And all three of us know they can't sign a
- 4:24Speaker 3: Jomo because they just signed Davis and Carter. You can't
- 4:27Speaker 3: pay three defensive tackles big, big dollars.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting. It didn't stand out to me that
- 4:34Speaker 1: Jordan Davis was not impressive in training camp. It's always
- 4:37Speaker 1: hard to tell. They don't run enough sometimes for you
- 4:40Speaker 1: to really see. But I thought when they did, he
- 4:42Speaker 1: was always there. I noted a couple of times in
- 4:44Speaker 1: my notebook, getting a hand on Barkley or getting into
- 4:47Speaker 1: the backfield. I don't know where it changed.
- 4:49Speaker 2: He's a good run defender. That's not the point.
- 4:51Speaker 3: He's a very good run defender. I mean, we're not,
- 4:54Speaker 3: it's not no knock on Jordan Davis. He is what
- 4:56Speaker 3: he is right now. He's a very good run defender,
- 4:59Speaker 3: but he never plays, never is too strong. Almost never
- 5:03Speaker 3: plays in these past situations.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Here's the thing.
- 5:07Speaker 5: And Greg, it surprised me because you never really quite
- 5:10Speaker 5: know what a team's going to do. And I don't
- 5:11Speaker 5: know if, some of the defensive injuries for the Eagles
- 5:13Speaker 5: made them change their mind, but they played so much
- 5:15Speaker 5: 11 personnel and they didn't.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I know the Rams played one snap of 13 personnel
- 5:20Speaker 3: the whole game.
- 5:21Speaker 2: How crazy is that?
- 5:23Speaker 1: I didn't know that.
- 5:24Speaker 5: See, I saw Mumford played a lot. He got hurt
- 5:26Speaker 5: and then came back in. And Whittington's a kid that's
- 5:29Speaker 5: been there for a couple of years.
- 5:29Speaker 4: So I'm like, okay.
- 5:30Speaker 2: He played over 40 snaps, Whittington.
- 5:31Speaker 4: I couldn't believe how much 11 played. See, you just
- 5:33Speaker 4: don't know. And I give Sean McVay credit.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:36Speaker 4: You change what you, you could do it as you
- 5:38Speaker 4: go along. You could change. You also coached to their
- 5:41Speaker 4: in-game injuries that Philly had.
- 5:42Speaker 5: I thought, Jeff, as I sent it back to you,
- 5:44Speaker 5: I thought Sean McVay, second half of the game, and
- 5:47Speaker 5: once Stafford started to get accurate, he's got some pressure
- 5:50Speaker 5: on him. I think Sean started feeling it, and so
- 5:53Speaker 5: has Stafford. And they could not get to Stafford in
- 5:55Speaker 5: the second half.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Yeah, so it's interesting because we noted last week that
- 5:59Speaker 1: even the Bears played more 11 personnel than they ordinarily do.
- 6:02Speaker 1: It wasn't more than their 12, but it was a
- 6:05Speaker 1: higher percentage. So teams clearly want staff. the Eagles to
- 6:08Speaker 1: be in nickel now, which makes, I mean, we can
- 6:11Speaker 1: make a deduction. Maybe they want Jordan Davis to be
- 6:13Speaker 1: off the field. I don't know why, because Mario Jomo
- 6:15Speaker 1: is their nickel pass rusher, and he's been really good.
- 6:17Speaker 1: But for whatever reason, they're finding that they can quit
- 6:20Speaker 1: game and have success against the Eagles in nickel.
- 6:23Speaker 3: I would bet, and I think the tape shows this,
- 6:26Speaker 3: I would bet that people are also seeing that through
- 6:29Speaker 3: the early part of the season, Cooper Dujene hasn't played
- 6:32Speaker 3: at the same level that he has the last two years.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I would bet people are noticing that. The tape tells you.
- 6:39Speaker 2: We're not making this stuff up. The tape tells you.
- 6:41Speaker 1: How about Jeremiah Trotter, Greg? What did the tape show
- 6:44Speaker 1: on his first start?
- 6:46Speaker 3: He's a very good run defender, and he was in college.
- 6:48Speaker 3: I mean, there's a physical presence to him, even though
- 6:51Speaker 3: he's not tall, but there's a physical presence to the
- 6:54Speaker 3: way in which he plays. He uses his hands well.
- 6:57Speaker 3: He's a stack-and-shed guy. I mean, that's what he is.
- 7:02Speaker 2: He's good at that. He's a good run defender.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Did he, did, because I'm only asking, I can't tell, did,
- 7:09Speaker 1: obviously Kyron Williams caught a ton of passes out of
- 7:12Speaker 1: the backfield. They moved the ball over the middle quite
- 7:13Speaker 1: a bit. Did you see?
- 7:15Speaker 2: Oh, they played a ton of zone.
- 7:16Speaker 3: That zone stuff where you're, you're rallying up to, you know,
- 7:19Speaker 3: to tackle after he catches the ball.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Okay. So this was not a Jeremiah Trotter got exploited
- 7:25Speaker 1: in coverage type thing.
- 7:26Speaker 2: No, no. Okay.
- 7:27Speaker 1: All right. It's going to be an interesting conversation. How'd
- 7:29Speaker 1: you feel about John Campbell, the way he played?
- 7:32Speaker 3: I mean, Jihad Campbell is the guy they used at times,
- 7:35Speaker 3: you know, as, as sort of the zone match guy,
- 7:37Speaker 3: you know, and, um, yeah, I always struggle when a guy,
- 7:42Speaker 3: you know, let's say, and he got quote unquote beat
- 7:45Speaker 3: a couple of times, but it's not true, man. It's
- 7:47Speaker 3: more of his own match. You know, I mean, look,
- 7:50Speaker 3: he got beat on, on a, um, uh, a wheel
- 7:54Speaker 3: route by Higby, but so did Hunt. They ran that
- 7:56Speaker 3: play like three times in the game, you know? And
- 7:58Speaker 3: I mean, so, you know, um, The crazy thing about
- 8:02Speaker 3: Campbell is for all his athleticism, and again, you know,
- 8:07Speaker 3: I'm not in their meeting, so I don't know what
- 8:08Speaker 3: they're expecting him to do, but he doesn't seem like
- 8:12Speaker 3: an impact player in the context of their defense. I
- 8:15Speaker 3: think you guys would agree with that. He doesn't seem
- 8:17Speaker 3: like an impact. Like here, I'll give you an example.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I've watched a Giants defense, you know, and Arvel Reese
- 8:23Speaker 3: is a stack backer too.
- 8:25Speaker 2: He freaking has an impact on the game. I mean,
- 8:28Speaker 2: you see it. I mean, he has an impact on
- 8:29Speaker 2: the game. Sure.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Campbell and, and, and they're about the same size, by
- 8:34Speaker 3: the way, those guys, you know, and, and they're both
- 8:37Speaker 3: very good athletes, you know, you could nitpick as to
- 8:39Speaker 3: who's better, you know, but you watch the Giants defense
- 8:42Speaker 3: and you come away going, Arvo Reese.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Is, he's, he's out there, man. You see him.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Campbell, you know, I don't feel like he's come away
- 8:49Speaker 3: watching Eagles defense and you feel like, Hey, Campbell, man,
- 8:51Speaker 3: he was, he was out there doing stuff. Yeah.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Um, I know that there's a big push. Adam's probably
- 8:58Speaker 1: seen it too. Everybody wants now Trotter to start over
- 9:00Speaker 1: Campbell when Vaughn gets back. I mean, they're going to
- 9:02Speaker 1: give this thing, I would imagine. Did you see any
- 9:05Speaker 1: reduction in normal snaps for Campbell? No.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Campbell played every snap but five.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Okay, so then they're still giving him every opportunity. Obviously,
- 9:16Speaker 1: with Vaughn out, they were going to do that anyway.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Trotter played every snap.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Trotter played every snap. And I guess I would ask,
- 9:22Speaker 1: you made an observation I want you to explain a
- 9:23Speaker 1: little bit before we take a look at it. on
- 9:25Speaker 1: Jalex Hunt and how they used him?
- 9:28Speaker 2: A couple of times they had him as a stack backer.
- 9:31Speaker 3: When Campbell was not in the game. So, you know,
- 9:34Speaker 3: I just made me think it was only a couple
- 9:36Speaker 3: of times. It was in the first half.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Right. But they obviously did that for a reason.
- 9:39Speaker 3: They didn't, you know, Vic didn't just pull that out
- 9:41Speaker 3: of his you-know-what and say, okay, let's try that. So
- 9:44Speaker 3: it just made me think, you know, is that something
- 9:47Speaker 3: they would consider going forward?
- 9:48Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 9:49Speaker 3: And I don't want to put it out there as, oh,
- 9:51Speaker 3: Cosell thinks that Campbell's going to.
- 9:53Speaker 2: I don't know. They just did it twice. It just
- 9:56Speaker 2: I just made me think, why did they do it?
- 9:58Speaker 2: You never know. I don't know.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Let me try something.
- 10:01Speaker 1: It could be, you're just trying to confuse the offense
- 10:03Speaker 1: or you're just trying to experiment. I agree. Until we
- 10:06Speaker 1: see more of it or get it, maybe I'm sure
- 10:08Speaker 1: if someone will ask Vic about it and he'll give
- 10:10Speaker 1: an explanation. All right, let's take a look at some
- 10:13Speaker 1: of the things that the Eagles defense did in the game.
- 10:16Speaker 1: We'll start off with, uh, their first turnover of the year, Greg.
- 10:21Speaker 1: And I thought this was a nice example of the
- 10:23Speaker 1: pressure and then the turnover creation because Grenard got some pressure,
- 10:27Speaker 1: I believe, on this play. And this leads to.
- 10:29Speaker 2: So wait, this was the Bukuba interception?
- 10:32Speaker 1: Correct, yes. Football is finally back and PrizePix is bringing

- 12:33Speaker 1: how much I'm going to have to pay. Then I
- 12:35Speaker 1: have to replace the appliance. Then I got to do
- 12:37Speaker 1: research on what the best appliance is to replace with.

- 13:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying to remember this play.
- 13:54Speaker 1: So the Rams are under center. It looked like– Oh, it.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Was a five– okay, they showed a five-man reduced front
- 13:58Speaker 3: at a nickel. Campbell lined up on the ball on
- 14:01Speaker 3: the edge. They played cover one here. This was cover one.
- 14:05Speaker 3: And Makuba was the post safety. And they're playing– like
- 14:10Speaker 3: I said, this is cover one.
- 14:11Speaker 2: They're playing man. Mm-hmm.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Seems like the big play here is Grenard getting that
- 14:16Speaker 1: interior pressure.
- 14:17Speaker 4: On Davis Allen.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Go back just a little. Sure. Go back. I just
- 14:24Speaker 2: want to see something.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Yeah, so what they did here, which, you know, again,
- 14:28Speaker 3: they chose to do this, is they have Allen block him,
- 14:30Speaker 3: and then they have the back come and help. And
- 14:32Speaker 3: some teams do this because they figure it's a double. But,
- 14:35Speaker 3: you know, if the edge rusher wins right away, you're
- 14:39Speaker 3: in recovery mode right away, and he wins right away.
- 14:42Speaker 2: So now his speed, Jeff, I think it's Kyron Williams.
- 14:46Speaker 2: He's in a tough spot.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I mean, you can't expect him to, to now all
- 14:50Speaker 3: of a sudden, you know, stop Grenard and Grenard just
- 14:53Speaker 3: shows him away.
- 14:53Speaker 5: His first step, Greg is really good.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Grenard is really good. And then Grenard.
- 15:00Speaker 3: And then of course, Stafford, you know, probably feels that,
- 15:03Speaker 3: you know, and, and throws it a little before he
- 15:06Speaker 3: had the definition and, and overthrows it, and McCuba does
- 15:10Speaker 3: what a good post safety should do, reacts to the
- 15:13Speaker 3: throw and makes a play.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Yeah. That, to me, Adam, was probably maybe the first
- 15:18Speaker 1: or second real example since Crenar came back of that
- 15:21Speaker 1: instant for that quick pressure. They talk about quick pressure, right?
- 15:25Speaker 1: Time to throw, impacting it, and, of course, that made it.
- 15:28Speaker 1: He cuts inside.
- 15:29Speaker 4: It's just beautiful.
- 15:30Speaker 1: All right, look what we got here, Greg, at Stack Linebacker.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fine. It's stacked backer.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Yeah, so this is maybe the first of those two.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I think this was third and nine in the first
- 15:39Speaker 1: quarter here.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Yeah, like I said, they did this twice, so I
- 15:42Speaker 3: don't want it to be, you know, one of those.
- 15:45Speaker 3: You know, this was a fight, and they turned out to,
- 15:48Speaker 3: you know, Grenard and Smith are the edge rushers. Campbell
- 15:50Speaker 3: was not in the game. They went with a five-man pressure,
- 15:52Speaker 3: and they did a stunt. Hunt, even though he's a
- 15:55Speaker 3: second-level player, he was the picker, and Carter was the
- 15:58Speaker 3: looper and an inside stunt concept here.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Right.
- 16:02Speaker 1: See, so they used him as a blitzer, right? It's
- 16:06Speaker 1: not like they turned him into a stackbacker. He lined
- 16:09Speaker 1: up as a stackbacker. So it might have just been
- 16:11Speaker 1: a different blitz package.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Might have just been a different look.
- 16:14Speaker 3: You know, again, that's why I said I don't want
- 16:16Speaker 3: people to think I'm advocating anything.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I just noticed it watching the tape. Right.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I don't know if there's anything schematically beautiful for you
- 16:23Speaker 1: to break down, but this is the second turnover that
- 16:25Speaker 1: Eagles create.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Oh, is this the interception by Dejean? Yeah. Yeah, this
- 16:30Speaker 2: is where they get it. You know, he leaves the pocket.
- 16:32Speaker 3: And he tries to hit, I think, Nakua, you know,
- 16:37Speaker 3: coming back on running, you know, inside.
- 16:40Speaker 2: And he just makes a bad throw.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Right. I think what stood out to me a little
- 16:45Speaker 1: bit on this, if we go back, is that normally
- 16:47Speaker 1: we say pressure creates turnovers. But Stafford bounced around the
- 16:51Speaker 1: pocket here. But I thought the Eagles were actually giving
- 16:54Speaker 1: him too much time.
- 16:55Speaker 2: This was late in the first half, I believe, too.
- 16:58Speaker 5: Yes.
- 16:59Speaker 1: They try a stunt there. What's that? That's Nolan Smith
- 17:02Speaker 1: and Carter.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Yeah. His right side.
- 17:05Speaker 1: And the Rams had that blocked up fairly well for Stafford,
- 17:08Speaker 1: who typically gets rid of the ball quickly.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, these are deeper routes just because of
- 17:13Speaker 3: the situation in the game.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:15Speaker 3: And he tried to hit Nakua, you know, crossing back
- 17:17Speaker 3: into the middle, and he overthrew him.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Yep, absolutely. Yep.
- 17:21Speaker 1: I mean, without these two turnovers that gave the offense
- 17:24Speaker 1: short fields, I don't even know how the Eagles would
- 17:26Speaker 1: have built But then it obviously came down to the
- 17:28Speaker 1: fourth quarter. Let's examine the drives, the two touchdown drives
- 17:33Speaker 1: at the end. One of the biggest plays was Higby
- 17:36Speaker 1: for 20 yards.
- 17:37Speaker 2: This was the wheel route.
- 17:38Speaker 3: They ran the same play in the second quarter where
- 17:41Speaker 3: he beat Hunt. It's from the same formation look. So
- 17:44Speaker 3: here Campbell has to play him. I think this is
- 17:46Speaker 3: actually his own concept. I think it's quarters. But in quarters,
- 17:51Speaker 3: you have to run with number two.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Because you don't know the corner.
- 17:57Speaker 3: I don't know who the outside receiver is there, but
- 17:59Speaker 3: if he runs straight vertically, the corner's got to take him.
- 18:02Speaker 3: So the underneath defender has to run with number two
- 18:06Speaker 3: when he goes vertical like this.
- 18:08Speaker 1: So, you know, this is– So Campbell's doing his job.
- 18:10Speaker 1: He's doing well at this point.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Oh, no, yeah. This was back shoulder, I believe.
- 18:14Speaker 3: The one to Hunt was over the shoulder, which was
- 18:17Speaker 3: a crazy throw.
- 18:18Speaker 4: I mean, he's right there.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Hunt's right– I mean, Campbell's right there.
- 18:21Speaker 2: The back shoulder throw. You can't play the big ball
- 18:23Speaker 2: on the back shoulder. You can only play one. You
- 18:25Speaker 2: can't play both. Big-time NFL throw.
- 18:28Speaker 1: I know fans are on Campbell, but you can't blame.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Him for that. No, you can't play both.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Yeah, the Rams are good.
- 18:34Speaker 4: He recovered well. Yeah, he was right there. Just threw
- 18:37Speaker 4: it over his head.
- 18:37Speaker 1: All right, shortly after that, I think the very next
- 18:40Speaker 1: play is a 32-yard play to Nakua. Greg, was that
- 18:43Speaker 1: a breakdown, or what did you see on that?
- 18:46Speaker 3: No, this was the 32-yarder where he runs the out
- 18:49Speaker 3: and up versus Woolens. and Woolen got caught, it's cover three.
- 18:53Speaker 3: They rotate to cover three. So Nakua runs the out
- 18:57Speaker 3: and up, and Woolen gets caught, and he's in recovery mode.
- 19:01Speaker 3: It's actually the ball's thrown a little behind. Nakua is
- 19:04Speaker 3: able to adjust to it. Woolen can't because he's in
- 19:06Speaker 3: recovery mode. So he just got beat. That's his responsibility
- 19:10Speaker 3: in cover three. The route's outside the numbers. Essentially, that
- 19:14Speaker 3: becomes man coverage. So he just got beat.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Right. And it's important to remember for people, I mean,
- 19:20Speaker 1: the Rams are very familiar with how to attack Woolen.
- 19:23Speaker 1: He was with Seattle for his first four years.
- 19:26Speaker 3: One issue Woolen has always had is just his fundamentals
- 19:31Speaker 3: of the position sometimes are lacking. And he just, you know,
- 19:35Speaker 3: doesn't execute the right way. And, you know, that's always
- 19:40Speaker 3: been a concern. And, you know, the other concern with him,
- 19:43Speaker 3: I know from talking to people is, they sometimes feel
- 19:46Speaker 3: that the concentration isn't at the highest level, but you know,
- 19:49Speaker 3: this is not me talking this is what i've been told.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Right yeah naku is not a blazer and this might have.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Been one of those cases because he just got caught
- 20:00Speaker 3: you know playing a little too upright eyes in the
- 20:03Speaker 3: wrong place yeah and you.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Know and then he's in recovery mode Yep, yep, yep.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Body turned around, recovered. That was a big play. I mean,
- 20:10Speaker 1: that was a really big play.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Anytime you get 32 yards, it's a big play.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Well, I meant at the time of the game.
- 20:16Speaker 5: Right, right, right. Plus, Jeff, the pressure they were getting
- 20:19Speaker 5: in the first half, you could see it evaporate in
- 20:20Speaker 5: the fourth quarter.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:22Speaker 4: It could not get to Steph.
- 20:23Speaker 2: And the thing is, in the entire– this is the
- 20:25Speaker 2: first touchdown drive, right? Yes.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Every play on this drive was a four-man D-line pass,
- 20:31Speaker 3: Russian zone coverage behind it until they got to the
- 20:34Speaker 3: Williams one-yard touchdown.
- 20:35Speaker 2: So nine of the ten plays were four-man, D-line, pass rush,
- 20:40Speaker 2: and zone coverage. Yep. Oh, actually, you know, this is four-man.
- 20:44Speaker 1: That was a sim, right?
- 20:45Speaker 2: It's a sim pressure. But it's four-man.
- 20:47Speaker 1: They didn't yet.
- 20:48Speaker 5: Yep.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Right. Well picked up by Kyron Williams. See, that's the example, right?
- 20:52Speaker 1: When you have a guy who can pick up that
- 20:55Speaker 1: blitz for you.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think this might have been the one play
- 20:57Speaker 2: where they sort of matched up in man.
- 20:58Speaker 3: But, yeah, they– I think Vic was a little nervous
- 21:03Speaker 3: about bringing pressure and truly matching up because they're matching up,
- 21:06Speaker 3: but they're playing off coverage.
- 21:07Speaker 2: You know, they're playing looser coverage.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Yep.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Now, if you want to point out, we showed so
- 21:13Speaker 1: many plays like this where when Dean was the blitzer,
- 21:15Speaker 1: he would just roll right through that guy and get
- 21:18Speaker 1: to the quarterback. I don't think that that's anything Jihad
- 21:21Speaker 1: Campbell did wrong though. I mean, he just.
- 21:23Speaker 2: No, no, no, no. Ball came out quick. It's a
- 21:25Speaker 2: slander out. Ball's coming out.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Very quick. And then another big critical first down conversion
- 21:30Speaker 1: for them. All right, and this would be the touchdown
- 21:32Speaker 1: that kind of put them ahead. This is not the
- 21:34Speaker 1: one yard. It's the next one, Kyron Williams. I feel like, Greg,
- 21:37Speaker 1: this is– Go ahead.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Oh, wait.
- 21:39Speaker 3: That was actually on the last drive, not the– right.
- 21:42Speaker 3: So I was right about the first touchdown drive. It
- 21:45Speaker 3: was a four-man D-line and zone. That was the last
- 21:49Speaker 3: drive where Vic decided he had to do something a
- 21:52Speaker 3: little different. So he did the skin pressure, and he
- 21:54Speaker 3: played man.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Right, my fault on that. Yep, and then that's what
- 21:58Speaker 1: led to– I feel like at this point the defense
- 22:00Speaker 1: is pretty out of gas because this is just poor tackling, correct?
- 22:03Speaker 2: Kenny Moore played one snap, by the way.
- 22:05Speaker 4: He did.
- 22:06Speaker 2: He did. Didn't notice him.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 22:13Speaker 1: long lines, we've all been there. But when it comes

- 23:03Speaker 1: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans 21
- 23:07Speaker 1: and up. Because I, you know.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Miss, miss.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Trotter had the angle, man, and didn't get him.
- 23:14Speaker 2: I mean, look at that.
- 23:15Speaker 1: That's shades of, what was it, last week against Luther Burton,
- 23:19Speaker 1: just trying to tackle him on a run.
- 23:21Speaker 3: I mean, you know, it's one of those, if you're
- 23:23Speaker 3: a Rams fan, it's a really good run. If you're
- 23:25Speaker 3: an Eagles fan, it's, you know, you got to tackle him.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Trotter took a good angle. He just couldn't get
- 23:31Speaker 1: him at the ankles there. But you said he played
- 23:33Speaker 1: every snap. This is the last snap. I mean, at
- 23:36Speaker 1: that point, who's setting the edge there? Cooper's setting the edge.
- 23:41Speaker 1: This was– Who's getting– that one, whoever he dragged into
- 23:46Speaker 1: the end zone there, I think it was Michael Carter.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Carter played almost all the snaps too.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Yeah, right here, I think that's Michael Carter has an
- 23:54Speaker 1: opportunity to stop him at the three, two, and just
- 23:58Speaker 1: kind of gets dragged through it. Can't make the play.
- 24:04Speaker 2: And touchdown. Yeah, that's unfortunate.
- 24:06Speaker 1: That's unfortunate. But that's a look at the defense. And
- 24:10Speaker 1: maybe some better days ahead if the Eagles get a
- 24:13Speaker 1: little healthier. We'll have to see what happens with Zach
- 24:14Speaker 1: Vaughn throughout the week. We'll have to see what Quinn
- 24:17Speaker 1: Young Mitchell's status is going to be like. And, of course,
- 24:20Speaker 1: Jonathan Grenard. Man, I do think their pass rush, Adam,
- 24:24Speaker 1: looks different, clearly, obviously, with Grenard there.
- 24:28Speaker 4: I mean, he stands out. You remember against the Bears,
- 24:30Speaker 4: immediately he stood out.
- 24:32Speaker 2: No, he stands out. He's a legit pass rusher. They
- 24:35Speaker 2: don't have a pass rusher. I mean, no one had
- 24:37Speaker 2: that sack. He just ran upfield and around. That's not
- 24:40Speaker 2: going to happen on a weekly basis.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Grenard is a closer.
- 24:43Speaker 5: And unfortunately, with the ankle injury, he couldn't return.
- 24:46Speaker 4: He didn't come back in the game.
- 24:47Speaker 6: But I think ultimately, you know, their offense really needs
- 24:51Speaker 6: some work because this was a game where if their
- 24:53Speaker 6: offense could have been, you know, successful and they could have,
- 24:56Speaker 6: you know, moved the ball more, you know, they could have,
- 24:59Speaker 6: who knows, maybe they could have been ahead going into.
- 25:01Speaker 3: The fourth quarter 30 to 10.
- 25:03Speaker 2: And you don't have to worry about this.
- 25:05Speaker 5: Yep.
- 25:06Speaker 3: You know, they got to get that because that is
- 25:09Speaker 3: possible to clean up. It's not like, oh, my God,
- 25:11Speaker 3: guys are just awful and they're getting beat.
- 25:14Speaker 2: It's more schematic.
- 25:15Speaker 3: You know, you got to just take the approach that
- 25:17Speaker 3: protection is the absolute.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Number one thing.
- 25:20Speaker 1: 100%.
- 25:22Speaker 2: All right.
- 25:23Speaker 1: That's going to do it. That was a look at
- 25:24Speaker 1: the Eagles defense and their loss to the Rams. For
- 25:27Speaker 1: Greg Cosell and Adam Kaplan, I'm Jeff Mosher. You've been
- 25:30Speaker 1: watching Inside the Tape on Inside the Birds with Greg Cosell.
- 25:38Speaker 6: Thank you.
