- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the UConn Football Coaches Show. A few
- 0:02Speaker 1: more minutes with Jason Candle. We're going to talk to
- 0:04Speaker 1: Sincere Bowers. Interesting guy, Bowers coach. He went to Iowa
- 0:09Speaker 1: Central Community College, then West Virginia.
- 0:12Speaker 2: There's something about football.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Players want to play, obviously. They'll go anywhere and they'll
- 0:18Speaker 1: do whatever they have to do to keep their pads on.
- 0:21Speaker 1: And he seems like a good example of that because
- 0:25Speaker 1: he's been through a few things to get to where
- 0:27Speaker 1: he is today.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, that kid has just showed up here
- 0:30Speaker 2: in January and worked.
- 0:32Speaker 3: He's not looked back and, you know, never cried the victim,
- 0:38Speaker 3: played the victim card, never. You know, he just goes
- 0:41Speaker 3: to practice and runs really hard and runs really fast
- 0:44Speaker 3: and does what he's supposed to do. And there's a
- 0:47Speaker 3: lot to be said for that. And, you know, in sports,
- 0:50Speaker 3: we can. You know, we can go a lot of
- 0:53Speaker 3: places with our energy and our mind and we can
- 0:55Speaker 3: pick up our phone and, you know, we type something
- 0:57Speaker 3: on the phone, somebody will listen and somebody will like
- 0:59Speaker 3: it and somebody will, you know, give us the attention necessary.
- 1:02Speaker 3: But he's not that type of guy. He just goes
- 1:04Speaker 3: and plays and kind of throwback in that sense. And
- 1:08Speaker 3: I get a lot of appreciation for guys like that.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Glad to see that his work was on display Saturday
- 1:14Speaker 2: for everybody to see.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, can't get enough of those guys. A quick note,
- 1:18Speaker 1: Kai Wilson got to play. four catches, 52 yards. That
- 1:22Speaker 1: was good. And he had 27 after the catch. So
- 1:25Speaker 1: he might be a factor. It looks like from the
- 1:26Speaker 1: wide receiver group.
- 1:28Speaker 3: There's a guy that tears his ACL in the second
- 1:30Speaker 3: spring practice. And, and I'm not, like I said, today,
- 1:33Speaker 3: my press conference, I'm not trying to challenge anybody's medical
- 1:36Speaker 3: knowledge here, but for that guy, even to be having
- 1:38Speaker 3: pads on and running.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Is a miracle.
- 1:40Speaker 3: You know, so credit our medical team and his ability
- 1:44Speaker 3: to persevere through tough moments and, brings a competitive energy
- 1:47Speaker 3: to practice every day. And, you know, a guy that
- 1:49Speaker 3: our team really roots for, and that's obvious. And he's
- 1:52Speaker 3: got a little spark. He's got juice in his legs.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I mean, he's a guy that, you know, that can
- 1:56Speaker 3: score a long touchdown as well.
- 1:57Speaker 2: So we're going to.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Continue to be smart with him and bring him back
- 2:01Speaker 3: the way we need to.
- 2:02Speaker 2: But, you know, when it's time to get to his
- 2:05Speaker 2: moments to cut him loose, we've got to cut him
- 2:06Speaker 2: loose too.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Yeah, you face Casey Keeler, the head coach of Temple Sports.
- 2:12Speaker 1: this week. He coached Joe Flacco back in 2005 to 2007.
- 2:16Speaker 1: He's seen some stuff. He was at Sam Houston State.
- 2:19Speaker 1: He was at Delaware back then with Joe Flacco. His
- 2:23Speaker 1: team seems run-oriented. I mean, looking at it statistically, how
- 2:27Speaker 1: do you view them as you face the Owls?
- 2:31Speaker 2: Tough opponent. Not going to beat themselves. Very physical.
- 2:36Speaker 3: I would go back to his days at Rowan University
- 2:38Speaker 3: when I was a mountain unit. You know, Division III
- 2:42Speaker 3: national championships, both teams. You know, so I think.
- 2:47Speaker 2: That, you know, I mean, he's won a billion games.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I think that, you know, he's a very good coach
- 2:52Speaker 3: and he's done a really good job building and sustaining
- 2:54Speaker 3: programs wherever he's been. And it's like I said, a
- 2:58Speaker 3: game that you have to go win.
- 2:59Speaker 2: They're not going to give you anything. So we're going
- 3:00Speaker 2: to have to get our best. Yeah.
- 3:02Speaker 1: They played some tough opponents. They played Penn state, played
- 3:05Speaker 1: army tight. They lost an overtime game themselves and, But
- 3:09Speaker 1: this past week, and I'm sure you're starting to look
- 3:11Speaker 1: at this, they went to South Florida and beat an
- 3:13Speaker 1: undefeated team. It seemed like it was a defensive battle,
- 3:16Speaker 1: so their defense has to be pretty good, too.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Good in the interior, very good size at safety and linebacker,
- 3:25Speaker 3: and they run fairly well at every position. So, yeah,
- 3:27Speaker 3: I mean, it's a tough move to move the ball against, and,
- 3:31Speaker 3: you know, this will be a, You've got to win
- 3:34Speaker 3: the situational battle, and you've got to make sure you
- 3:35Speaker 3: take care of the football and offense if you're going
- 3:37Speaker 3: to produce the points you want to produce.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah, playing in that big stadium where the Eagles are,
- 3:41Speaker 1: that's going to be different in a way. I mean,
- 3:44Speaker 1: you don't often play in a 70,000-seat stadium on the
- 3:48Speaker 1: road against Temple.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it'd be a cool experience for our guys.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I mean, it's something I'm sure, you know, the guys
- 3:53Speaker 3: that haven't done that before are really looking forward to.
- 3:57Speaker 3: You know, it's a different environment. It's, you know, sometimes
- 4:00Speaker 3: it lacks an environment just because of the size of it.
- 4:03Speaker 3: But you've got to kind of make sure that your
- 4:05Speaker 3: mind is prepared for that.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Yeah, quick final note on Caleb Osborne, a young quarterback
- 4:13Speaker 1: for the Huskies. And this came to mind last night.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I was watching Bryce Young, the Alabama guy that won
- 4:18Speaker 1: the Heisman and then went to Carolina and struggled early on.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Young guys learning that position and trying to figure it
- 4:26Speaker 1: out and be successful. Do you really know when they're
- 4:30Speaker 1: going to get to the stage where they get it?
- 4:33Speaker 1: I mean, Bryce Young, he was like buried almost in Carolina,
- 4:37Speaker 1: his first pro stop. And now he looks like he's
- 4:40Speaker 1: understanding what's going on with that position more and more,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and he looks dangerous. So, I mean, I think that
- 4:45Speaker 1: bodes well for a guy like Caleb Osborne.
- 4:47Speaker 3: It's the most scrutinized position in sport. Pressures there are
- 4:54Speaker 3: greater than anywhere else in the program, other than maybe
- 4:58Speaker 3: the head coach. You know, you– everybody wants results now.
- 5:03Speaker 2: They don't want to wait. They want to win. They
- 5:05Speaker 2: want touchdowns. And, you know, Sam Darnold's a great example.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Trying to run that guy out of the NFL and
- 5:11Speaker 3: he wins a Super Bowl. Baker Mayfield's another one. Can't
- 5:14Speaker 3: play for this organization. We wasted a draft pick and
- 5:17Speaker 3: he's got his team in the playoffs the last couple
- 5:19Speaker 3: of years playing really good football. I mean, there's, you know,
- 5:22Speaker 3: Bryce Young's another example. It takes time, you know, and
- 5:25Speaker 3: we're an impatient society. We're an impatient on a lot
- 5:27Speaker 3: of things, but, you know, If I can help it,
- 5:31Speaker 3: I'm not going to be impatient with this guy. We're
- 5:32Speaker 3: going to grow this guy the right way, develop the
- 5:34Speaker 3: way he needs to develop. And, you know, we're going
- 5:35Speaker 3: to keep pouring into the good and keep hammering home
- 5:38Speaker 3: the bad and make sure he knows what a real
- 5:40Speaker 3: authentic growth path looks like so he can play his
- 5:42Speaker 3: best football and our team can be our best.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Yeah, you mentioned the most scrutinized position, you know, from
- 5:49Speaker 1: the outside looking in. But inside for you, you got
- 5:52Speaker 1: to know, right, when you see him make an incremental
- 5:55Speaker 1: jump in his ability and his understanding of the position,
- 5:57Speaker 1: that's kind of what you're looking for, I would think.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Yeah, you pay close attention to everything right there. It's
- 6:04Speaker 3: body language. It's pre-snap operation. It's how he communicates to
- 6:07Speaker 3: his teammates. It's, you know, and to his credit, he's
- 6:11Speaker 3: done really well on a lot of things, you know,
- 6:14Speaker 3: and we just we can't use youth as a crutch.
- 6:19Speaker 2: But we also, too, we can't, you know, put it
- 6:21Speaker 2: not not act like that.
- 6:22Speaker 3: That's not a real variable here on, you know, success
- 6:24Speaker 3: and failure.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Yeah, his teammates love him. That's what I hear, Coach.
- 6:28Speaker 1: We appreciate it. Good luck this weekend. Let's get the 3-3.
- 6:32Speaker 1: That's where you'd like to be as we get to
- 6:34Speaker 1: that second half of the season. Thanks again.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Thank you. Go Huskies.
- 6:38Speaker 1: That's Jason Candle back with more of the UConn Football
- 6:41Speaker 1: Coaches Show coming up next on Learfield.
