- 0:33Speaker 1: Um, what a killer season.
- 0:34Speaker 1: As well, as I think he took, yeah, third place at the San Juan Solstice.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Uh, so, yeah, dan's on a heater and I was really excited to finally have him on.
- 0:40Speaker 1: The podcast is something we've been kind of trying to put together for a while.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Um, kind of the.
- 0:45Speaker 1: One of the main goals of this podcast is to just have as many uh crushers as possible, especially local ones, on the pod.
- 0:51Speaker 1: So this is definitely one of those ones.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Uh, it was a really fun, uh, really fun conversation to have.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Dan's a good guy and look forward to having them, having them on for runs and having them on uh in the future.
- 1:02Speaker 1: So I hope you guys enjoy this one.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Like I said, personal favorite of mine, none other than Mr Daniel Metzger.
- 1:07Speaker 1: It's time, ladies and gentlemen, we are live.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Dan Metzger, welcome to the Steep Stuff Podcast.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Sorry, I did that as soon as you took a sip of your beer.
- 2:20Speaker 1: It's okay.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I appreciate you having me on.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Dude, I appreciate it, man, this is, uh, this worked out really well.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I you're somebody who's been on the list for a long time and now that things finally settled down, post, like all the I don't know Pike's peak and I got a bunch of travel.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Now that I'm kind of like home, it's nice to just start like talking to people that live in the Springs.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you know.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah, you've been a busy guy for sure.
- 2:41Speaker 2: It was nice to see you out there at PPM doing the elite panel and stuff.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Hell yeah, man.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Hell yeah.
- 2:46Speaker 2: You didn't race this year.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Is this something you think you're going to go best?
- 2:50Speaker 2: It was supposed to be the last one on my list, supposed to do the marathon, but I just raced so much this year.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Towards the end my knees started acting up a little bit and honestly, I just put health like so high up on the list these days, I don't know.
- 3:13Speaker 2: My goal was to just race a lot this year and try and be consistent in everything, and so pulling out a PPM was kind of like it was a really tough decision, but then they ended up cutting the course short.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, so you didn't miss much.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I was like I would have been so pissed if I did this.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Not fair, ended up cutting the course short.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Yes, you didn't miss much.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I was like I would have been so pissed if I did this.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Not fair because it was literally like what glorified?
- 3:32Speaker 1: I mean no offense like ppm, like love them, hopefully they have me back but like it was glorified.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Glorified bartrow mountain race this year.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I know a lot of people that were like fuck man, I really wish we went to the top, you know I yeah, I got.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I mean, you'll learn about me, I have a lot of strong opinions about things, but I was like it just seems crazy to me, you know, like with the level of elites in our sport these days, I feel like there needs to be a system of these people that are like in the elite wave can go up to the top.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Yeah, like they're self-sufficient, you know they can do it.
- 4:04Speaker 2: So let the elites go to the top and I don't know.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Yeah, do battle, man, proper battle.
- 4:09Speaker 1: That's the thing, like, and it was so I know, uh, darren, his pot actually drops tomorrow and darren and I were talking darren thomas just before uh, the race and like I don't know, like he had a whole strategy like on if you guys were going to be running in like six or seven inches of snow yeah, I don't know, it would have just been, I don't know.
- 4:27Speaker 1: And same with, like my boy joe, you know, you know, jeff kuno, um, I just listened to he's a wild, he's a wild boy dude.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I love jeff kuno and like even I don't know, I feel like even jennifer's post after, uh, after the race.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I didn't talk to her after but like I just assumed like her post kind of implied like everybody kind of wished we just want to let you know it would have been proper.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Yeah, you know it's funny, you bring darren up.
- 4:49Speaker 2: He's uh, I'm from reno, nevada originally are you really?
- 4:51Speaker 2: Yeah, because he's putting on that race there yeah, p vine yeah, good times on that, on that hill running up there.
- 4:58Speaker 2: He's good friends with my buddy, tommy uh and mk solvin yeah, live in, who live in that area.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I saw him after ppm.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I was like, hey, good job, darren, he's like I don't know who you are, cool, I know who you are, you're really good.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a cool, he's actually he's a.
- 5:13Speaker 1: He's a cool dude.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Yeah, he's uh, you know, it's funny people.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I don't know even myself, like now that I've been in the sport for a while and like now that I don't know, with the podcast and with running and like with sportiva, you get to meet all these people that I wouldn't necessarily clinical, call them heroes, but like you meet people that have like big names in the sport and like you're intimidated to like walk up and say hey, but there were just people, they're just like normal.
- 5:37Speaker 2: You know, like Darren Thomas, this is down to, as like anybody I've ever met, yeah, I'm pretty jealous of what you got going here Like talking to all these amazing runners and getting to meet so many people.
- 5:47Speaker 2: It's cool.
- 5:48Speaker 1: It is, it's unique, it's different.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Yeah, man, it's coming along.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Man, we're growing, we're getting there.
- 5:54Speaker 2: It's kind of weird to think, like I just launched this in March and like it's now like I don't know one of the fastest growing, like running podcasts and in america, which is fucking wild, like people you have on are amazing and, like I mean, you live in the area for it too, which helps.
- 6:10Speaker 1: So yeah, that was funny.
- 6:11Speaker 1: We were talking about before off air, like moving and stuff like that and like I feel like I can't leave the springs now, because every time I think about like oh, you know, there's a lot of places I could consider living, like we just I got really recently was in like driggs, idaho, and like all these different spots and I'm like I could live there because there's no people.
- 6:28Speaker 1: But then I think about it.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I'm like, fuck, now I can't go anywhere else because there's.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I need people for the podcast.
- 6:34Speaker 1: It makes it a little bit easier.
- 6:36Speaker 1: So, dude, let's talk about you.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Um, what's your story like?
- 6:42Speaker 1: How did you get in trail running?
- 6:43Speaker 1: How'd you get into running in the first place?
- 6:44Speaker 1: Like, what's, what's the background?
- 6:46Speaker 2: oh man, um, it's hard to like have that whole like elevator phrase of like summing up a running career right, because I mean, I've been doing trail racing since my senior year of college, which goes back to like 2016.
- 7:05Speaker 2: And I've just been doing this way too long but, uh, I kind of have like two phases is how I think of it.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Like my junior year of college, um like obviously I ran in high school and then I got like a minor scholarship to go run in college at Cal state, monterey Bay Um, like one of the only schools that would give me money and it was already like a cheap Cal state, so like sweet, and I get to live on the beach, like how cool.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Um, so I did the whole like college thing and I really was never fast like at all.
- 7:37Speaker 2: You know, um like I tried really hard but I never was like.
- 7:41Speaker 2: I mean I think I broke 16 just barely like two times on the track and so I mean there was a falling out with my coach Kind of got booted off the team there, which is a story in itself.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Oh shit, we might have to unpack that one.
- 7:56Speaker 2: No, it's all right, we won't go there.
- 7:58Speaker 2: So I kind of like just like stumbled across trail running, mostly because a couple of buddies of mine in college they were like all about the high mileage thing and I was running, I think, like 80 mile weeks or something I was like there's no way I could do more than this.
- 8:14Speaker 2: And I had a buddy who's like I run 150 mile weeks.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Like just do it with me, all right, cool, and did it.
- 8:28Speaker 1: And then kind of like discovered you know whole like anton craze um you got long blonde hair for people that don't know you got the, you got the look yeah, and so I was all about that.
- 8:33Speaker 2: You know, just like running lots of miles in the mountains, so like that's the coolest thing ever.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Um.
- 8:40Speaker 2: So my senior year of college, uh, uh, just started running like full time, um, and then after college I took it was like a span of like eight months to where I just ran and that's all I did.
- 8:53Speaker 2: It didn't work.
- 8:53Speaker 2: I was like I'm gonna take a break from everything and just focus on running.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Uh, before that I did a trail race in Fort Ord in the Monterey area, like the trails we ran in college all the time, and it was a hundred K I think.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I ran like nine, 30 or something, took a nap under a tree.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I was like this shit's wild, like you can run all the miles in the world and like if you don't have that experience it's not going to matter.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Um, but then I I took that time to like focus on running.
- 9:21Speaker 2: After school, uh, did that same race again, ran like seven, 40 ish, uh, a hundred K with like seven K avert.
- 9:30Speaker 2: I was like damn, that was like really fun, like I nailed that, Um, and leading up to that, I mean.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I was just being stupid like running 200 mile weeks Dude how does your body take that?
- 9:43Speaker 2: Uh, and what dude.
- 9:47Speaker 2: How does your?
- 9:48Speaker 1: body.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Take that, uh, and that's why I say like two phases because I do not do that now.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, totally different runner now, uh, but I mean it was just kind of like young stupid kid like let's push this and see where we go and there's so many people like that who discover that you know, tony, and like running lots of miles and just wanted to see what they could do.
- 10:04Speaker 2: And how long did you do that for?
- 10:06Speaker 2: Like so my senior year of college, uh, or even like my junior year, when I was still running cross country, we did like 150, and then we do like random two hundreds, uh, and like I PR like crazy and cross country, I was like, oh shit, this kind of works.
- 10:22Speaker 2: You know, like just try harder, the more you run, the better you get.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yeah, right, it's simple, um.
- 10:32Speaker 2: And then after school I took like it was like eight months off, um, but it wasn't like consistent 200.
- 10:37Speaker 2: It's like I wasn't that cool, but for the most part it was like one 50 to one 60.
- 10:41Speaker 2: And then I'd peak at like 200 ish, uh, but it was probably like a year to two years of that like off and on.
- 10:49Speaker 2: And then jenny and I moved to colorado because we were in, uh, yeah, we were in monterey living with a couple roommates and it was just like so expensive and my guy wasn't working, she was working two jobs oh my god, god, I would run in the morning.
- 11:05Speaker 2: wake up at 10, go run 20, 22 miles.
- 11:08Speaker 2: You live in the dream.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Oh, it was the greatest period of my life Come home, eat a bunch of food, take a nap.
- 11:15Speaker 2: She'd get off work and wake me up and we'd go on a run together, just like a chill run or around the soccer fields or something.
- 11:22Speaker 2: So, yeah, that was, that was amazing.
- 11:25Speaker 2: But like we couldn't afford to live in Monterey Uh, I miss it so much, like it's such a special spot, um, but we were had like the whole mountain dream of running on the trails and becoming like trail ultra people and you kind of got to move to a place, to where you can actually run mountains.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So, uh, we did a big road trip.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Uh, we almost moved to flagstaff.
- 11:49Speaker 2: I really liked it there also a great place, yeah but it was like that time in our life to where, like, we got to make money, you know, um, like I was so focused on, like oh I'm I'm going to get sponsored, oh I'm going to do this full time, like why not?
- 12:08Speaker 2: Sort of thing.
- 12:08Speaker 2: And when we were in Monterey, like did way too cool, ran pretty solid there, did Lake Sonoma back in like 2017.
- 12:20Speaker 2: And it was just like I didn't really know much about the sport there.
- 12:25Speaker 2: But I mean, I look back at that now and Lake Sonoma, like Jim set the record and Mario Mendoza, dylan Bowman, like all these studs ahead of me, um, and I finished sixth.
- 12:36Speaker 2: I was like, oh man, like what the hell?
- 12:38Speaker 2: I'm running like 40 hours a week and I can't even podium Like what the hell I got to move to Colorado and become like bad-ass you know uh, altitude yeah.
- 12:48Speaker 2: But we moved out here and I probably did like another six months of big miles and I mean it kicked me in the ass.
- 12:54Speaker 2: You know, running real trails at altitude, um, like I'm from Reno Nevada originally, uh, so the altitude, I kind of adjusted a little quicker.
- 13:04Speaker 2: But uh did run rabbit for my first hundred.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Uh, I was ninth there if I remember and honestly, like I just got so burnt out I just kind of like quit running.
- 13:21Speaker 2: There's a lot more to it than just that.
- 13:24Speaker 2: But yeah, I don't know, I was just like running so many miles and putting so much into it and doing it for all the wrong reasons.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Yeah, was the goal then let's get sponsored Like the.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Is that what you were pursuing was trying to do that, or like, or just like waiting for that big result to come?
- 13:42Speaker 1: Is that what you were like, kind of forcing a bit?
- 13:44Speaker 2: of both.
- 13:45Speaker 2: You know like it sounds silly and I hate saying this, but like I'm not very talented.
- 13:49Speaker 2: You know like again, 16 minute 5k dude, like I just know how to try really hard and yeah, I guess the goal was.
- 13:58Speaker 2: You know like I would love to do this and get some support and focus on it.
- 14:02Speaker 2: But also like coming out of college, you have this like back of your head like you should be making money and like starting a career and like doing stuff.
- 14:11Speaker 2: So, um, but there's some other factors, like, again, I had been running since like sixth grade, like starting in clubs, and I just got so burnt out.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Um Rabbit, it was kind of like a regret of mine, but I got into Leadville 100.
- 14:29Speaker 2: And my dumb ass, not knowing much about the sport, just signing up for races that were you know, appealed to me.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I signed up for URA 100.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Instead, dropped out of that it's a terrible race.
- 14:42Speaker 1: No idea what I was getting myself into.
- 14:43Speaker 1: It's so hard.
- 14:44Speaker 2: That is a brutal race, yeah yeah, I think after run rabbit I was like well, if I can't go compete with these fast dudes and hunters, I'm just gonna do the crazy mountain shit yeah like see if that pays off dropped out of that.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Did run rabbit again dropped out of that, and I was like battling some injuries.
- 14:59Speaker 2: And then did like quad rock dropped out of that, like three races in a row, and I was just so checked out.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:07Speaker 2: And I mean life is crazy in itself, but like one year of not competing and not running turned into two, and then two years turned into three, and so, yeah, like just literally stepped away from the sport completely, and I don't know, part of me was like, oh, I'm going to have all this spare time I'm going to focus on, like, getting a career.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Like I had my fun with.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Running is what it is like turn the page, um, and I mean I credit Jenny to helping me.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Jenny, my wife, uh, helped me to get back into the sport.
- 15:41Speaker 2: But like, mentally, like not having running and not having something to focus on, I just became like such a wreck.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Well, you're just like what do I do, you know?
- 15:52Speaker 2: like you think you're going to fill that void with something positive and really it just turns into like drinking beer and like playing video games, so, um, yeah.
- 16:00Speaker 2: And then around COVID times, like I don't know, uh, the world shut down and somehow I got focused on like I'm going to focus on like getting like strong and fit again, and most of that was focusing on my foot that I've been dealing injuries with and I still deal with it constantly, but just like focusing on getting myself healthy, healthy, um, and then I don't even remember the first race I did back.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I think it was run through time.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, great race, yeah, and I mean I don't know my attitude these days, like choosing to come back into the sport was more like I don't care about sponsorship, I don't care about money.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Like I had a job, I work, um, I make decent money, I can support myself.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Like I just want to, um, you know, have fun and compete and like for the like most of it, like I just want to do it for my mental health, like honestly, like that's the only time where I feel like endorphins and I feel good is what I'm running, so it's like such an important part of my life now.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Um, but yeah, I did run through time and I was doing probably I don't know, I think I did a few hundred mile weeks and doing that I was like, well, this is weird.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Like I'm used to going into a race just doing like stupid stuff.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Like you know, like 40 mile training runs, um, and this time it was like a totally different runner and I ran really well.
- 17:27Speaker 2: I think I was third there.
- 17:28Speaker 2: I was like, oh shit, like I can actually compete and train pretty smart now.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Like how cool.
- 17:34Speaker 2: It only took, like I don't know, three years of not competing to learn that dude, and it's crazy, like and there's something to be said.
- 17:45Speaker 1: I mean for me, when I talk to runners as well.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I'm like I can even say this for myself when you stop caring about outside forces and you just focus on like, all right, I'm doing this for myself and I'm not doing this for anyone else and I just want to have fun out there and see what I can accomplish.
- 17:59Speaker 1: It's amazing, like, what you can accomplish when you do shit like that.
- 18:02Speaker 2: It it's very true.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Yeah, like I mean, these days I still have this like.
- 18:08Speaker 2: For the most part, I still focus mostly on miles to get fit.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:13Speaker 2: But nothing like before and it's just a mental thing Like I don't know.
- 18:18Speaker 2: I mean, if I could run full time again, I'd probably just end up breaking myself.
- 18:22Speaker 2: I feel the same way, man.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sure a lot of people.
- 18:27Speaker 1: I had that time, jesus Christ, I would be in the hospital.
- 18:30Speaker 2: It's a tough, it's a tough battle, you know, cause like we're so passionate about it and it's hard to like half ass something that you care so much about.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Yeah Well, dude, I want to preface it too man, like, and you've been on a fucking heater like this year.
- 18:42Speaker 1: What a standout year.
- 18:44Speaker 1: It took Tap10 at Speedgoat, thank you, you're up and over.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Results were off the wall.
- 18:52Speaker 1: I don't know Quad Rock as well.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Some phenomenal results, and it really shows whatever you're doing is working, man, and that's part of the reason why we're here having this conversation.
- 19:02Speaker 1: I'm curious to see.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Well, we're going to talk about your racing season.
- 19:08Speaker 1: We'll get it, unpack that and get into that.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Um, and then as well, like, talk about, like, what you have planned and like what you want to get into in the future and stuff like that one thing I do want to chat about.
- 19:17Speaker 1: That was speed yo, because I say that was like a baller result against like the likes of, like david sinclair, like the best in our sport.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Adam peterman was there, grant barnett was an amazing competitor.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Um, I think you beat nate jukes, who's also like hayden, one of hayden hawk's training partners, like I mean you showed up there.
- 19:36Speaker 2: He only beat me by an hour.
- 19:38Speaker 2: I mean david sinclair is like.
- 19:41Speaker 1: There's an there's an argument that could be made that he might be the best in the world at this point.
- 19:45Speaker 2: I agree.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I was bummed.
- 19:46Speaker 2: He didn't do Pike speak.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I would love to see him, you know, do that on the full course and stuff.
- 19:51Speaker 1: So I feel like every conversation I have on the podcast, it somehow David Sinclair gets brought into it.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I feel man doing it in like a.
- 19:59Speaker 2: I think he wore a Hawaiian shirt.
- 20:01Speaker 1: He did Shaved his head, wore a Hawaiian shirt, dude really quick.
- 20:04Speaker 1: I don't want to segue too much, but is Broken Arrow something you'd consider, because that's kind of like homecoming for you.
- 20:10Speaker 2: That's funny.
- 20:11Speaker 2: You bring that up Because Jenny and I have been talking about that for a while and when I was in Monterey and I had done Way Too Cool, and Sonoma and Brendan, the race director at Broken Arrow, kept, uh, like reaching out to me a couple of years with like hey, you want to do Broken Arrow?
- 20:30Speaker 2: And I don't know why I never did it.
- 20:33Speaker 2: I don't know, like, cause I'm from Reno, so it's nice I can go home and just drive up to Tahoe and do the race.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Um, but now it's crazy, like that race has exploded.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:45Speaker 2: I keep getting it from everyone, like, oh, do broken arrow.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Like it's the most competitive race in the country.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Like, arguably, um, and so we're thinking we're probably going to do it this year.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Yeah, um, it seems like, cause it's in June, right?
- 20:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it's in June.
- 21:00Speaker 1: I'll be out there, I think.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Well, the reason I bring it up too is because, like I think, for you and Jenny both like Jenny reminds me a lot of like Christina, and Christina has had a lot of success there, and you as well, like having had, both of you really having had such success at speed go.
- 21:16Speaker 1: It's a very comparable race when it comes to competition, especially in the top 20 athletes?
- 21:21Speaker 2: It seems like it.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it?
- 21:25Speaker 2: top 20 athletes?
- 21:26Speaker 2: It seems like it.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it.
- 21:26Speaker 2: It's funny too, that you say that speed goat is like my most impressive result this year, because I think it was the race to where I could have improved yeah, most.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Really.
- 21:31Speaker 2: I think running that course uh helps so much, like knowing what you're in for, sort of thing, and also like I just started using poles, like I didn't use poles in it and that's like a huge factor I think would help me so much.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Um, and and so I would like to go back and do speed go a lot this year and jenny's just like rolls her eyes I don't want to go back, she does not want to go back.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Uh, dude, that's a fucking nasty course, like so I raced.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Uh, I like the really short stuff.
- 22:05Speaker 1: So, like your, your your mountain classics, your 11, 11ks.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Like your, your cirque series races, just because, like I feel like you could do a ton of them in a season and not get too banged up.
- 22:14Speaker 1: But like I don't know, like I feel like 30 plus miles on those snowbird like routes or just chew you up and spit you out.
- 22:24Speaker 2: I mean, I honestly was stoked you wanted to have me on because I know like I mostly do longer stuff no, no, I mean, did you that you do both?
- 22:30Speaker 1: I mean in a lot of ways like and dude you're, can't?
- 22:33Speaker 1: You had a great kendall result this year.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Um, we'll get into that too.
- 22:37Speaker 1: There's just like so much we could talk about because, like you did all of like a lot of my favorite mountain races that was the goal for the year.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Like I wanted to do another hundred after doing, uh, leadville last year, um, and I don't know like I'm having the same difficulty this year.
- 22:53Speaker 2: It's hard to find a hundred that you can like guarantee entry, yeah, as like a sub elite quote, unquote, you know, and like you got to plan your whole year around it.
- 23:02Speaker 2: So like, entering lotteries and stuff is so stressful to find something that works because, uh, I mean I'm not going to sign up for 100, like half ass, you know, yeah, um, so this year we kind of just got like click, happy signing up for races, um, and like so, like did like quad rock.
- 23:20Speaker 2: And then I I was on the lottery for san juan solstice 50 mile and got into that.
- 23:25Speaker 2: I was like cool, I guess I'll do that too.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and then I I was on the lottery for san juan solstice 50 mile and got into that.
- 23:26Speaker 2: I was like cool, I guess I'll do that too yeah, and then two weeks podium.
- 23:29Speaker 2: That two weeks after was uh, was kendall, and then two weeks after that speed goat and then two weeks after that was taos and then four weeks after that was telluride Mountain Run.
- 23:42Speaker 2: So it was a lot.
- 23:44Speaker 2: But originally the goal was going to be Speed Goat for the year.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Yeah, but then San Juan getting into that I couldn't say no, yeah.
- 23:51Speaker 2: So things kind of changed.
- 23:53Speaker 2: But I think overall I went into Speed Goat pretty healthy and feeling pretty strong.
- 23:58Speaker 2: It mostly was just knowing the course and I always knew how competitive that race was.
- 24:06Speaker 2: But you kind of just got to see it for yourself.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Like I would have to look at the results again, but I was fairly close to like top five but I was also very close to like 20th.
- 24:17Speaker 1: I mean, dude, the field is just so deep.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Let me ask you this with um getting such a great result there and now getting like the coins, do you want to go do like occ abroad or like what's your?
- 24:28Speaker 1: What's your thought with that, or was?
- 24:30Speaker 1: It the stones, or whatever yeah, stupid utmb shit is.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm glad you make that comment.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Yeah, because I'm kind of like I don't know, utmb hype is kind of it's cool.
- 24:40Speaker 1: It's cool like I would totally do occ one day.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I just find, like you know, man, the entry points to this sport, I think, is what makes the sport special.
- 24:49Speaker 1: It's a soul sport, right?
- 24:50Speaker 1: You don't do this Like, yes, we're competitors and I love to compete and that's my favorite aspect while I'm 33 years old, but there's going to come a time where that's not the thing anymore.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Like I want to do it because I love it, right?
- 25:02Speaker 1: So it's like the accessibility of the sport is what makes it exciting.
- 25:05Speaker 1: And I think, when you add all this bullshit in, like with the stones or points or golden tickets, and it's like, you know, I feel so bad, for I'm not an ultra runner, you know, but I feel so bad for, like these people that enter these lotteries and like get their hopes up and get so stoked I don't need to like knock it accepted into hard rock and like gotta wait 20 years.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Like if I was to start the process now, dude, I'd be like 50 by the time I got into that race, you know this is crazy.
- 25:31Speaker 2: It's very true.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I mean, if, if we could have financial support to go abroad, I would be down to do it.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Yeah, um, but it's.
- 25:39Speaker 2: I mean already, jenny and I most of our like vacations are based around running, so I we don't really have an excuse there, we should just do it one year, yeah, yeah.
- 25:46Speaker 2: So, yeah, I mean maybe I think it would be cool to experience, but I personally really enjoy like the low key type races.
- 25:58Speaker 2: You know, like I mean San Juan Solstice, even Kendall Mountain, yeah, pretty chill vibe.
- 26:01Speaker 2: I mean San Juan Solstice, even Kendall Mountain, yeah, pretty chill vibe.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Races that are pretty like I don't know, not like super hyped, I guess per se other than Speed Goat and it's still like draw like good competition around the area.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Yeah too, like Kendall had I mean you're talking Seftimore.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Cam showed up.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Noah Williams, like Kendall was stacked this year.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Man, like three former winners and three world-class like dude, like a whole handful of like world-class athletes.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I think that was like the main thing I learned this year was that the people that are good at this sport do this sport as like their secondary sport.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Yeah, cause I'm like looking at the results of Kendall or Spiego or whatever.
- 26:46Speaker 2: I'm like that guy is a Schemo guy.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that guy is a Schemo guy.
- 26:49Speaker 2: I'm out here doing this like for you know, like full time, right, and these guys just do it for fun and are the crushers, the fitness you can build off that shit man like.
- 26:59Speaker 1: So I just got into.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Uh, I just bought roller skis and I have been I saw your post about that.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Yeah, dude 10 out of 10 recommend.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Like I are like.
- 27:09Speaker 1: I've been doing it for like two weeks now and I already feel like I don't know, maybe it's probably placebo, but like I, I'm like, oh, I feel like, if I, if I continue with this, like I could build an absolute, enormous engine.
- 27:21Speaker 2: So how fast do you get going on those?
- 27:24Speaker 1: Oh, dude, like you're talking like five minute miles, like five or six minute miles.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Okay, so I'm a noob, I've fallen a bunch of times, but like when I actually start to like figure my shit out and the climbing so put it this way is like I wanted to do it as just like something I can do three or four hours a day after work, that'll like actually like not be cycling and something that'll get my heart rate up right, something where I can just continue to build my aerobic base on top of like my normal run I do and, dude, you could get like hit like solid zone too, like I could be.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Like my heart rate is usually like 130 to 145 beats per minute doing that, which is I can't do that on a bike, like I don't know, like a lot of people can.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I don't know, I feel like I I struggle with that I've never been into biking at all so I mean it looks really fun like from your post dude, that's like no impact you just get to like cruise bike trails and stuff I now know why.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Like, the first thing I thought was like okay, I now know why Nordic skiers are.
- 28:21Speaker 1: So the other thing, too is like dude, I just started, um, I'm getting ready for this VK.
- 28:25Speaker 1: There's like the summit for life, vk.
- 28:27Speaker 1: I'm trying to figure out something dumb to end the season with.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Um and Aspen has this like dope little like VK and like it actually attracts like a like a pretty decent like schema field, so like that runners can race the schemo athletes and it's like for charity.
- 28:40Speaker 1: So I'm like all right, I'm gonna go do this.
- 28:42Speaker 1: So I've been practicing with a bunch of poles lately and, um, it just makes your pole work so much better and evidently, according to the science, like the more you're using poles, the higher you could like you can actually like have a chance of like increasing your vo2, evidently, yeah.
- 28:55Speaker 1: So I was like all right, let's give this a.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Yeah, you're mimicking that same form of like going uphill with poles.
- 29:01Speaker 2: So, like really good practice too, to get used to them.
- 29:04Speaker 1: And I'll do like maybe like one or two hard climbs a week and like with, like, uh, like on Blodgett or something like that, and it works.
- 29:11Speaker 1: I was like damn, like you actually like the whole movement, everything like just the fluidity.
- 29:15Speaker 1: You get much better with the fluidity and and you know what the other thing too is like I'm a pretty short guy and like I used to use like 115 centimeter poles and like now, the more I'm using this, the more I'm like constantly contacting spend like hey can you send me a longer set of poles?
- 29:29Speaker 1: And I'm at like one 25 now.
- 29:31Speaker 2: That's funny.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I uh.
- 29:32Speaker 2: I just started using poles this year to uh using my TMR and now I'm like I'm not, I'm gonna not use, like, if it's more than like I don't know, 300 feet per mile, I'm definitely using poles yeah, like they help so much and I said the same thing like the second I started using them.
- 29:48Speaker 2: I was like I I'm thankful I got 130s, like I feel like I need more, like yeah, and you're a pretty tall guy, so I feel like, yeah, it definitely the longer you hesitate?
- 29:56Speaker 2: to get 130s because like I listen like to interviews and stuff and looking stuff up, it's like, oh, start lower and then get comfortable.
- 30:03Speaker 2: I was like no, it just feels normal to have them, you know be just like I don't know it's a weird movement.
- 30:09Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, no, 10 out of 10 recommend.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Like dude, I was telling Jen like pot.
- 30:25Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, I'm gonna.
- 30:25Speaker 1: I think I told emily this too I'm gonna start a.
- 30:26Speaker 1: I want to start a club in colorado springs of like these runners, because like in colorado springs, we don't get a good snow pack right, so like we can't really ski.
- 30:29Speaker 1: So I'm like, well, the roads are pretty clear.
- 30:29Speaker 1: I'm gonna start like a roller ski club.
- 30:31Speaker 1: That'd be sweet man.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Seeing those people out there, though, I'd have a hard time.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Like losers, yeah, easy to make fun of the fuck are these people doing?
- 30:38Speaker 1: it's a rollerblade.
- 30:40Speaker 2: It's like literally one step away from rolling like, but it's that's like a blast, though it is so much fun.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Uh yeah, dude, like so the first day, like my wife was already automatically making fun of me what the fuck are you doing?
- 30:53Speaker 1: And then, like I had a lady down the street like asked me like is it if everything's okay?
- 30:57Speaker 1: Dude, I biffed it in front of a car too.
- 31:00Speaker 2: It's not as easy as it looks.
- 31:03Speaker 2: I mean, it's the same as trail running, though right Like you fall.
- 31:06Speaker 2: At least I fall a lot.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, dude, speaking of that, I was looking on your Instagram Like you had a pretty nasty injury.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Was it last year or the year before?
- 31:13Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:14Speaker 2: What did you do?
- 31:15Speaker 2: And that's like man.
- 31:22Speaker 2: I was supposed to do Pikes Peak Marathon.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it was like the first year I really came back and was like racing a good amount.
- 31:27Speaker 2: I think it was the same year I did run through time and then I did Audi 50K and won that.
- 31:33Speaker 2: I was feeling like so confident and was supposed to do PPM and Jenny and I's last training run on bar trail, like the week before, uh, it was labor day weekend and I just like slipped on just pike scrabble, yeah, and just landed weird, put my arms out, you know, and like I've never, ever hurt myself in this sport on trails and instantly I like popped right up and I was like, oh, I dislocated my shoulder oh man and like I hear stories of people who have had that happen, like my brother's dislocated his shoulders playing basketball.
- 32:10Speaker 2: I have a good friend and like I gotta get it back in right.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Like the longer it's out, the more damage you do, and so I'm like trying to throw it back in place and stuff like an idiot.
- 32:18Speaker 2: And then, all of a sudden, the pain sets in and I was like, oh fuck, like this hurts, really, really, really bad.
- 32:24Speaker 2: And uh, I was like holding my wrist and I turn around and jenny's coming down.
- 32:28Speaker 2: And poor jenny, she was like having like the best training run.
- 32:32Speaker 2: She was like so ready and she's like what's wrong?
- 32:34Speaker 2: What's wrong?
- 32:35Speaker 2: And she thought like I broke my wrist because I like could not move my arm or it was just screaming pain.
- 32:39Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, I dislocated my shoulder, like you need to go get the car and meet me right where, um, the the cog meets, um, and she starts running down and, thank God, she turns around and she's like you have the car key.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Oh my God, that would have been so bad.
- 32:56Speaker 2: And like with the parking in Manitou, it's such a shit show now, like we parked so far away.
- 33:02Speaker 2: So, um, thankfully some people gave me like some Tylenol and I was like asking people.
- 33:05Speaker 2: I was like, do you know how to put a shoulder back in place?
- 33:07Speaker 2: People?
- 33:07Speaker 1: just look at me like what the?
- 33:09Speaker 2: fuck and like, yeah, it was labor day, so it was just like so many tourists and I'm just like pacing back and forth and it was like probably like 80 degrees, such a warm day oh man just run like 15, 16 miles.
- 33:21Speaker 2: I was so dehydrated, um, and it took so long to get to the er and all the traffic, um, and so well you know I, whatever it's an injury I can bounce back from.
- 33:34Speaker 2: So, um, fortunately it wasn't the legs yeah yeah, it just sucks though.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Like getting old when you have an injury like that, it's just something that's going to bother you forever.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Yeah, how old are?
- 33:45Speaker 2: you, I'm 30.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Okay, all right, dude, I feel like I'm 33, turning 34 pretty soon, and I there's more shit pops up as you get older.
- 33:54Speaker 2: It's wild.
- 33:55Speaker 2: I mean, that was like two years ago, though, and like still, I'll do an ultra race and my shoulder will just be barking it'll be so sore.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Yeah, dude so I've been trying to incorporate a lot more strength stuff to keep that you know what is that pt like?
- 34:07Speaker 1: or like when you went to the hospital, like what did they do?
- 34:09Speaker 1: Obviously they pop it back into place.
- 34:11Speaker 1: But like, are you like on, like a protocol to like strengthen that shit?
- 34:14Speaker 1: Or like, what do they do?
- 34:15Speaker 2: uh yeah, I went to uh um because jenny is works at um colorado springs orthopedic group so she got me in with the doctor there.
- 34:23Speaker 2: I saw a pt there and it was just mostly like, do all of these exercises and do them all the time and continue doing them, um, because, like, the statistics of dislocating it again are pretty damn high yeah and like I was, like I do not want to go through that pain again ever so it was excruciating that it was awful.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it was so awful.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Um, yeah, it was like the worst pain I've ever felt in my life for sure and then in the er, they would not give me pain.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Meds have you broken any bones or like no no, okay, so I don't have anything, no, I was just curious, dude I I'll tell you what man.
- 35:00Speaker 1: I snapped an ankle a while ago and had to get surgery on it down the line, and actually I had to get surgery on it the next day.
- 35:07Speaker 1: God, I'm so sorry, but, dude, it was excruciating.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Yeah Well, I'm just always curious to hear about injuries Because, dude, I had Christina sitting in the seat too and Christina's oh yeah, I broke my.
- 35:16Speaker 1: I don't know, I think it might have been she broke her ankle or something and just like hobbled down the thing or like, and hobbled down the trail.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Like how do you do that?
- 35:23Speaker 1: I would have been like a little baby on the ground, like crying like oh my.
- 35:27Speaker 1: God.
- 35:27Speaker 1: I was, uh, I was screaming in the backseat for sure, like in the car.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Like Jenny, drive slower, don't go over any bumps, oh dude, yeah, yeah, it's well.
- 35:40Speaker 1: The other thing I was curious about too, like when you use poles, does it ever bother you?
- 35:44Speaker 2: It's always just like there, you know just like soreness.
- 35:47Speaker 2: That just bothers me every now and then.
- 35:49Speaker 2: It was just disappointing because, like it was my first year getting back into racing and I was like so pumped and then had this injury, and so it was kind of like, well, how am I going to face this challenge?
- 36:01Speaker 2: Like am I going to be like, well, you know, fuck, running.
- 36:04Speaker 2: I'm done doing it again.
- 36:05Speaker 2: But I was just like you know, shit happens.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Now we're just going to build back again the next year, sort of thing.
- 36:09Speaker 2: So I just have like realized that I'm never going to be a hundred percent healthy.
- 36:17Speaker 2: You know, like I think a lot of runners that say they're healthy, there's always something going to be nagging you, that you are constantly going to have to be putting work in to keep it in check.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Um, like my foot, I've had mris done on it and they're like oh, they said I had a like cysts or something in my foot.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Oh shit, and what part is it like on, like the plantar, like the achilles, like?
- 36:42Speaker 2: on the top, like in the like metatarsal area so I I thought I had a stress fracture or something.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Um, so I I don't know like if that truly is what's causing the pain, but it's just something I always have to like yeah, exercise and keep up the strength work.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Um, there's always weird shit, man, I've been.
- 36:59Speaker 1: So a couple weeks ago I, um, I've I got a great pt, sean remmer.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Shout out to sean, uh at run potential and dude, like he's one of my good friends too, so I'm always like texting him like dude, I'm fucking broken.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Like, help me, you do it.
- 37:13Speaker 1: This is like two or three weeks ago I thought I had a herniated disc in my back because I I did something like I literally could not like we flew to new york and I couldn't even sit down for that three, three or like four hour flight.
- 37:24Speaker 1: I was in excruciating pain.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Um, and sure enough, I get back and I see him and I've got this weird thing where I think it's like my downhill form is probably just dog shit needs some work, where I like knock my pelvis out of place a little bit and it will pinch.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Uh, it like causes some nerve stuff where it goes up the chain and like here I'm thinking like, oh, I'm destroyed, my back, he like yanks on my leg, does a few things, a couple of things, and I'm like back back to back to good and I'm like the body is fucking weird dude yeah.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Yeah, no, like it's funny, you say that because Adam Schwert, who I haven't seen, yeah shout out to Adam Also a great PT.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Yeah, run mental Like I've been dealing with this knee thing and he said it was kind of the same thing like my back.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:09Speaker 2: From running downhill and stuff doing all these fast short races downhill, yep, but that's just another thing I've just been dealing with.
- 38:16Speaker 2: There's always something dude, yeah yeah.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Well with, and there's always something dude, yeah, yeah.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Well, dude, let's get back to uh, let's get back to the accomplishments.
- 38:27Speaker 1: That's what I want to highlight here is talk about all the amazing things that you did this season.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Like what?
- 38:29Speaker 1: Second place at tmr, um, eighth place at kendall, top 10 at speed goat, second place at um, at up and over.
- 38:34Speaker 1: What was your favorite, like you all these amazing mountain races.
- 38:38Speaker 1: What was your favorite event?
- 38:40Speaker 2: I so like I have to say tmr was my favorite experience, um, mainly because my knee had been bugging me a lot, um, and I was very hesitant to even do that race, and like it was pouring rain when we were there and I was just like still on the fence, like like I don't even know if I'm going to do this, um, and my body was just amazing the whole day and like it ended up not raining and so, and the course itself, um, and the race, the way it's put on, is really cool.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Um, so that was like my favorite experience the whole year.
- 39:20Speaker 2: I was just so thankful to be able to go out there and have a good day and like enjoy it, and that race I enjoyed more than any other race throughout the year.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Just like the whole time I was like I'm so grateful to be healthy and like be competing.
- 39:33Speaker 2: And then also like, since it was the last one of the year, um like I saw like real improvements of like racing that day, you know um like throughout the year I feel like I progressed on like my you know competitiveness factor and like getting better at racing, and that's kind of why I wanted to do all these races this year, cause like it's so difficult for me to like learn how to race like like anything.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Um, I'm so used to just being slow and like slogging through my training and so I go out slow and I'm just like kind of like creep on people throughout the day.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Uh, so this year it was like trying to learn how to be better at actually racing.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Um, and at TMR, like ended up passing someone in the last like climb compared to like, for example, san Juan solstice.
- 40:18Speaker 2: I got passed on the last climb and so I was like nice like I made, like positive steps this year yeah, dude, it's, it's so.
- 40:26Speaker 1: There's so many things on pack with that.
- 40:27Speaker 1: First, well, I'm going to talk about racing and second, I'll like talk about tmr.
- 40:31Speaker 1: But, like, dude, the skill of racing I think that people sleep on.
- 40:35Speaker 1: That's why I did the cirque series this year was because, like those fast, like really fast, vertical races, like you have to put yourself in it from the second, like from the gun, and I think Kendall is a great example and like something like up and over is like great example too, where, like those types of races, like if you don't put yourself in the race within the first like mile or two, you're there's.
- 40:56Speaker 1: No, I mean, you can try to catch people on the downhill, but like, if someone's gonna put a gap on you, it's usually on the ascent and you can.
- 41:04Speaker 1: It's very difficult to catch people on the descent, depending on on where you're at.
- 41:08Speaker 2: So, like being able to like know when to assert yourself but also not to blow up too like that's the, that's the tricky part and that's why I did a lot of these like shorter races too this year, because, like I'm so used to going out in like a 50 which still even 50s these days you have to go out hard yeah, you gotta move like I just, I'm so used to just chilling the first half of races and you see these dudes out here just going balls to the wall, you know, just cranking from the gun.
- 41:36Speaker 2: uh, so that like with taos and um with kendall, that was like the goal, just like I want to be like max, max heart rate from, because I never do speed work at all and so I kind of use these races as like an excuse to do speed work as well.
- 41:50Speaker 1: I love that downhill on Kendall.
- 41:52Speaker 1: What is it?
- 41:52Speaker 1: Smoke that ass, or whatever is the segment.
- 41:55Speaker 2: And like this year too, like I was really proud of my downhills because after falling a couple years ago, like it's, it's like ptsd, yeah, yeah, I have not been able to run hard downhill like fully confident, because I was always scared I was gonna like slip or fall again.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Um, and this year, man, some of my downhills I was just so proud of, like a kendall, I was really proud of that one.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Um.
- 42:18Speaker 2: And then Taos like I, uh, I passed them in at the end for that one and that was just like probably one of the best downhills I've ever had.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean you got to move on those races, man.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Like if you're not running sub five 30 miles on that downhill like you're, you're not placing in the top five yeah.
- 42:37Speaker 1: So it's, it's, that's tricky, some tricky shit, and it's, you know, I feel like talent.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Well, both of them have like good, solid ski roads, but still, techie, you should, you should really think about doing a cirque series race.
- 42:47Speaker 1: I think you you would, you would enjoy it they look fun yeah they definitely look fun.
- 42:51Speaker 2: I feel more confident, like I could do one of those now after doing I mean like kendall, you know, is like there's some.
- 42:57Speaker 1: It's decently technical, I guess you know like well the roads, yeah, yeah like it's.
- 43:03Speaker 2: It's technical enough to where, like my foot, I feel it like on those uneven rocks and stuff I think I raced it.
- 43:09Speaker 1: What the hell did I do?
- 43:10Speaker 1: I think it was like 21 something like that I think it was like 21 or 20 right there yeah, it was like 21 or 22 and I don't remember the, the.
- 43:21Speaker 1: I didn't remember the fire road being that technical, yeah, and then rose and I, we got married like around that week this year and I ran up it like for just a, just a bullshit run and I was like dude, there's a lot of rocks on this this is a little more technical than I remember.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Um so yeah, it's, it's.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know, it depends, I guess it's, I don't know.
- 43:39Speaker 1: Sometimes there's more rocks than that.
- 43:40Speaker 1: I don't know, it depends, I guess it's, I don't know.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Sometimes there's more rocks than not I don't know, and like Taos was a lot more runnable, like that's just like a fire road you're running down.
- 43:46Speaker 2: I think, I ran like a 15, 35 K down that.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Hell yeah, I was like damn.
- 44:01Speaker 2: Dude, I love that when you're, when you're hitting your mile pr or 5k pr on the desserts, it makes me want to do like, just like a downhill race.
- 44:04Speaker 2: We need more of those.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Oh, it's common dude, it's, it's, uh, I'm so.
- 44:05Speaker 1: I think the next iteration of the podcast is probably going to be somewhat in the form of, like having a race of some kind, I don't know where I think you mentioned that on your.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Uh jeff, yeah, you're talking about putting a race on I think I think we're gonna do like I like I said, this is like very early, but like somewhere in colorado, doing like a like a traditional up down and then a vk, and then I want a descent, like shout out to ace brown.
- 44:30Speaker 1: I know he wants one.
- 44:31Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm gonna.
- 44:32Speaker 2: It's gonna be for race, like they used to have the high drive 10 mile I don't know if that still exists or no.
- 44:37Speaker 1: It doesn't.
- 44:38Speaker 2: I'd race it if it did yeah, I love that race because it was like all runnable.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Like you're just cranking the whole time, yeah, I love those races where you're just like hammering yourself into the ground and like you hurt, but you hurt for like an hour or two and then it's all over it's so much different than ultra running.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Like I said this, uh, after taos I was like I think I'm more proud of my performance at Taos has been any old tribe.
- 45:04Speaker 1: It's a stacked race too.
- 45:05Speaker 1: It's a great weekend.
- 45:07Speaker 2: You're just.
- 45:07Speaker 2: It's just something that takes me out of my comfort zone, like I don't do any speed work, ever no speed work, and so to go out and be able to like hammer that I did, yeah, it's super rewarding.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Yeah, hell, yeah, to go out and be able to like hammer that I did.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's super rewarding.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Yeah, hell, yeah.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Well, dude, back to tell your ride, um, because I know this is like I go in as far as colorado goes, like that's starting to become a very well-known race, like I feel.
- 45:30Speaker 1: Like this year they had the deepest field, especially in the 40 and the 24 mile, like a lot of people show like decent the shorter race was super stacked.
- 45:38Speaker 1: The 24, yeah, I think ryan becker was there.
- 45:41Speaker 1: I think cam cam was there.
- 45:42Speaker 1: It's quite a few dudes and you uh, you put a hurtin on anthony lee, which is pretty solid.
- 45:48Speaker 1: It's a good notch in the belt yeah, so no, you did.
- 45:51Speaker 1: You had yourself a day.
- 45:52Speaker 1: How did you, uh, deal with the weather?
- 45:54Speaker 2: was it like raining the entire time or like and now that's like the huge bummer and kind of why I want to go back.
- 45:58Speaker 2: They took away the one stretch.
- 45:59Speaker 2: That's like the huge bummer and kind of why I want to go back.
- 46:00Speaker 2: They took away the one stretch.
- 46:01Speaker 2: That's like whatever they call it, like the mile of sky or something.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that's like along the ridgeline there, which is like the reason a lot of people do that race for that section there, and they took that out, which was a bummer.
- 46:14Speaker 2: But for the most part, yeah, no, it was pouring rain like the whole night.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Uh, driving to the start line in the dark, pouring rain.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Did you camp out before or what did you?
- 46:23Speaker 2: Oh, my god, yeah, we, uh, we were pretty low key for for tmr this year, jenny did the half marathon, I think it was, yeah, um, and then just cleared up right at the start, uh, and it was just like a beautiful morning and I was like I'm gonna go for it.
- 46:39Speaker 2: And then I went off trail like multiple times and I was like god damn it.
- 46:42Speaker 2: I was like I'm just gonna chill.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Then like sit back, like run with these people until we get above tree line and stuff, um, and then like we got up high, uh, before, like the first little summit, and it just started pouring and just snowing and I was like snowing it was hailing on us, yeah, um, and I was like well, shit, it's gonna be one of those days and like I saw a buddy who, uh, ran at a rival high school and it was like so weird to see him.
- 47:12Speaker 2: I knew he lived out there, but I was like how crazy, like running with someone from high school yeah, what a small world doing what I love with a bunch of crazy folk, like in the snow.
- 47:20Speaker 2: I was like this is what it's all about, uh, but then it ended up clearing up right after that and it was just a beautiful day the whole time and that course is just absolutely stunning, like from start to finish.
- 47:29Speaker 2: It's so fun.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Um, just climb descent, climb descent, um, and yeah, just like I don't know, I was kind of alone most of the day after anthony passed him and then getting passed by all the 24 milers, and the whole time I was like man, if I were to do the 24, it would be so different, like they were cranking.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Uh, but yeah, I it just slowly moved up throughout the day and just had fun the whole time.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Um, it was like one of the first races where I use like drop bags cause Jenny was racing so I didn't have any help and her drop bag and use like bio freeze on my knee Cause I was like so worried it was going to act up and I'd been using that and it was like a godsend.
- 48:14Speaker 2: It made me feel so good.
- 48:15Speaker 2: Um, yeah, I just had so much fun, which is like so nice to just enjoy a race the whole time.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I bet dude, dude.
- 48:23Speaker 1: How was the?
- 48:24Speaker 1: Did they still like do the sick trophies with?
- 48:26Speaker 1: Like the the spike in them?
- 48:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, they're like heavy.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Yeah, 30 pound like award, dude I think I might go race the 13 miler just so I could get one of those next year.
- 48:36Speaker 1: It's definitely something on my list.
- 48:39Speaker 2: The cool thing about the 13 mile too, is you do the like the stairway?
- 48:45Speaker 2: Yeah, at the very top.
- 48:46Speaker 2: I was kind of jealous, jenny got to do that yeah, it's pretty cool, right.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Yeah, that's like a perfect place that I was just talking to my buddy brad about this.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Like he raised the 13 mile, but like or no, he raised 24 miles.
- 48:53Speaker 2: Sorry, but like, just um, it's like a perfect vk almost perfect vk, if not more, to get to the top of that.
- 48:59Speaker 2: Yeah so that's a sick climb.
- 49:00Speaker 2: That would be fun, and have the finish line be up the stairs there, right.
- 49:04Speaker 1: So for anybody that's thinking about doing a race if you get there before me, go for it.
- 49:07Speaker 1: You know we need more stuff like that in our sport.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Um, but yeah, dude, what a what a sick race, and I'm happy that it's starting to like catch on more, like we're getting more people out there to do it and that's like I said, like deeper fields and like just I don't know.
- 49:20Speaker 2: It's like it's a good thing for our sport yeah, there's so much to choose from around this area it's become so difficult to like plan a race season.
- 49:28Speaker 2: You know, yeah, like I don't know if we'll do taos again next year, but, um, we've done that the last couple years and I'm like I can't believe this race has been around so long yeah, it's such a hidden gem.
- 49:39Speaker 1: It is dude and year like it's always like that first week in August and like I'm never.
- 49:42Speaker 1: I'm never around for it and I always want to do it.
- 49:45Speaker 2: It's a it's just a tough time of year.
- 49:47Speaker 1: There's so many races to choose from Um and it's like you want to pick and choose your efforts too.
- 49:52Speaker 1: And it's like you know, it's just like I don't want to torch myself on this and not be like a hundred percent for the next weekend, if that's, like you know, an a race it.
- 50:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it's tricky.
- 50:07Speaker 1: Oh, that race just completely destroyed my knee, running just like running so hard downhill Like we were losing 3000 plus feet in like three miles.
- 50:12Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah and you were talking about like your running form downhill, Like I don't think mine's very good.
- 50:16Speaker 2: Oh mine's just so hard to not tense up and like, especially in your lower back area, like it just takes a lot of practice running all out downhill I think mine's from like having broken that one ankle.
- 50:29Speaker 1: I think I like because I didn't.
- 50:31Speaker 1: I did it when I was in high school and I didn't go to pt.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Shout out to my cheap parents if they're listening.
- 50:38Speaker 1: I don't mean that like a negative, but like in a serious way, like I didn't go to pt and it makes me wonder if I do overcompensate in one way or another.
- 50:46Speaker 1: Because, like even sean's picked up on this, when I run downhill he's like dude, a lot of times on your left foot I'll watch you catch.
- 50:51Speaker 1: Like if you're running something very steep like long's ranch road or something like that, I'll watch you like land on your left heel and I'm like, oh, that's terrible, because if I'm landing on the heel that's like going right up to the chain into your pelvis.
- 51:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm like no wonder I mean, you're for sure gonna overcome, say, and it's so difficult because you don't want to, like, you don't want to change your running form, or else I don't know.
- 51:11Speaker 1: Like I try not to think about how I'm running, yeah, as it gets in my head and I start running all funky the last time I saw him he was giving me a different like ways, like change up my cadence, and I was like, oh, this is so awkward and like on like very easy slow runs.
- 51:24Speaker 1: I'll like play with it a little bit, but like it doesn't feel natural in any way.
- 51:27Speaker 1: So I'm like I think I'm just gonna do what I normally do.
- 51:30Speaker 2: And when you're in a cirque series race, running downhill, you're not gonna, you're not thinking you're running, you're just going all out.
- 51:36Speaker 1: I think, of all people, darren made the best assumption, like I was talking to darren about this and he was like, yeah, because if we're talking about mount marathon.
- 51:42Speaker 1: And he was like, dude, if you hesitate in any way, shape or form, someone's gonna roll you up and I'm like you're so right, like there's.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Just, there is no time for hesitation, it's very primal.
- 51:51Speaker 1: You have to do or die.
- 51:52Speaker 1: I'm excited to listen to your podcast with him because I saw his like strava gap pace at mount marathon and it was like sub force yeah, it broke the strava algorithm dude whoa, he's, he's a dude, he's uh, he's a, like a very underrated, like one of the best, and in the I mean we were talking about this too, because like he, um, when it comes to like support and stuff like that, he like very much, I think.
- 52:17Speaker 1: Think like wants to um, you know, he's at that elite caliber, like where, like very rare air, where he could be like one of the best in the world, if not already, might already be.
- 52:27Speaker 1: So it's like one of the things he said to me um, it was like, if you can't um the sports becoming so professionalized that like it's an armorors race, at this point you have to keep up and you have to make it your full-time job, which is tough man, because most of the people I know in the sport, even at the professional level, have full-time jobs.
- 52:47Speaker 1: It's very difficult to do.
- 52:49Speaker 1: In fact, the only person I know at Sportiva I think that does this full-time is anton.
- 52:57Speaker 2: that's it so yeah, and his full-time is like I'm gonna bike across the country like climb all these flat irons and then I'm gonna randomly do a hundred mile race.
- 53:08Speaker 2: But no, yeah, it's, it's super challenging.
- 53:12Speaker 2: Like, even if I got some support, like I mean, I'm still working a full-time job you know, Like I like having, how, like running is now like a structure in my life and it's not like my entire life.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:24Speaker 2: Like before, it was literally like all I did, and it just becomes like it's just way too much.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Well, it's like dude.
- 53:31Speaker 1: It becomes that like identity man and like that's that's something I shy away from.
- 53:35Speaker 1: I tried to at least Cause like yeah, I had so many people on that chair.
- 53:39Speaker 1: Like Allie is a great example where, like she, like life changing, like signs with Hoka Right and it's like she's very you realize people become very tough on themselves even they don't need to be like Allie's one, not only one of the best people, but like one of the best athletes in the world at what she does and but like the amount of pressure you see people put on themselves unnecessarily.
- 54:03Speaker 1: It's very rare that I'll meet someone that is just like like at that like upper echelon, but like very dialed back and chill, like a lot of them are like I like I hate to use the word, but because I use it all the time but like killers yeah and it's like the most competitive humans like you'll ever meet.
- 54:19Speaker 2: It's very interesting yeah, you kind of have to be to be successful when it comes to like race day, you know yeah but it's.
- 54:26Speaker 2: It's hard to take a step back when it comes to training too, for for those types of people, that's why I'm like I'm just gonna run a lot of miles, I'm not gonna do speed, because I'll just break myself yeah, that's true.
- 54:38Speaker 1: On the topic dude of like shoes and stuff like that, like what do you like to run in?
- 54:41Speaker 1: Like what shoes?
- 54:42Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 54:43Speaker 2: I mean before I was like running miles and miles barefoot on the grass, running minimalist shoes, ultras, all that stuff.
- 54:52Speaker 2: And now I'm like anton jr bro now I'm like full swing and I run in hokas.
- 54:56Speaker 2: So okay um, but uh yeah, hoka mafates have been my go-to this year you and jennifer both she said the same thing.
- 55:05Speaker 2: I was wearing topos for a little bit.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Um, running clifton's on the road, it changes a lot, though you know, like I, once I start liking a shoe then I'm like, ah, I hate it, I want something new.
- 55:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, um, but yeah, I have a pair of craft shoes.
- 55:22Speaker 2: I got ultras still, charles mk yeah, she helped me get those.
- 55:30Speaker 2: They're nice, though I got like, uh, the hybrid version of those, um, and I like how they have kind of like the rocker in there.
- 55:36Speaker 2: That helps me when I'm trying to go a little faster, but no, for the most time, uh, running on these like colorado trails, I like I had some nike carbon shoes too, but I just do not trust them on the real downhill trails.
- 55:49Speaker 2: No stability.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's interesting.
- 55:53Speaker 1: Like I um I mean I run in all kinds of shit like sportiva bakes, but like there's so many good shoes out there, like the new, okay, like, have you tried running in the tactons at all, like the new twos or even the?
- 56:04Speaker 2: ones are amazing.
- 56:04Speaker 2: I should mostly.
- 56:05Speaker 1: I haven't bought them because I'm just cheap yeah, I don't, I don't blame you, but uh yeah, if they go on sale, I should buy some of those highly recommend in fact, before I started running sportivas, like dude, the tecton was like my jam.
- 56:17Speaker 1: I fucking love that shoe.
- 56:18Speaker 1: Um, there's a lot of good ones out there and it's crazy the arms race you're seeing now like uh, I've got a couple like my coaches run for adidas and like or they're terex or whatever they're like sub brand.
- 56:29Speaker 1: But like, goddamn dude, like those agravic speeds I think they're called.
- 56:32Speaker 1: Like are cool shoes.
- 56:34Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what david rose broke the leadville record okay, yeah like fat, thick shoes, but like, just almost like mechanical doping in a lot of ways, because it's there, it's like if they're, it's so good, like I don't know, you're gonna get like um, I guess you could say a mechanical advantage with them so that gives them an excuse to charge like 300 bucks for him.
- 56:52Speaker 2: That's right, they're so it's so expensive.
- 56:55Speaker 1: I saw it, dude.
- 56:55Speaker 1: I don't know if you, uh, I don't know if you're big on instagram, but like I see these videos now people like shitting on like arcteryx and like lecky, and it's like become like this viral thing now where this guy is like going on mountains.
- 57:06Speaker 2: He's like I don't need arcteryx to climb this mountain I mean I I bought those lecky poles and I was like they are the best of the best 100 I would always buy these again.
- 57:17Speaker 1: The reason I do recommend them for people is because they actually have a great warranty.
- 57:21Speaker 1: Like I've broken mine.
- 57:22Speaker 1: I mean now I've got to hook up with sven.
- 57:24Speaker 1: Shout out to sven, brunso, he's my, he's my fucking boy, but like before then, um, their warranty.
- 57:29Speaker 1: If you break one which I've broken now, like three or four pairs of like the fx1 super lights and like with their warranty, they just send you a new pair if you do it with like you honestly have thought like I could break these.
- 57:40Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you're going to like a hundred percent like there's still half of one sticking in a rock, and like the sound grades that like I.
- 57:47Speaker 1: I wasn't able to pull out because I've destroyed them.
- 57:49Speaker 1: So yeah, they're, they're.
- 57:51Speaker 1: They're highly dope but like highly breakable, yeah, so well, dude, we're at like an hour now let's get in.
- 57:59Speaker 1: Let's get into some.
- 58:00Speaker 1: Let's get into the questions.
- 58:01Speaker 2: Man right on curious to see uh who inspires you yeah, I uh, I knew you were gonna ask this one and, um, when you had jenny on, I gave her a shit, so I was like you didn't say I didn't see dan so yeah, I'll say jenny for sure.
- 58:17Speaker 2: Uh, she inspires me.
- 58:18Speaker 2: She's like so much tougher than I am and she doesn't even like understand how talented she is, so she gets me out of the door a lot of the time and pushes me a lot.
- 58:28Speaker 2: Inspired by uh.
- 58:41Speaker 2: And when it comes down to it, like still people that are just doing insane mileage, who you may like have never heard of um, like people I follow on strava, like this dude from um sacramento area, chikara I can't even think of his last name runs like 220 miles a week consistently for months on months on end, and then he goes out and does like cross-country races in san francisco area.
- 58:58Speaker 2: Like what it's so bizarre to me.
- 59:01Speaker 2: And like people just don't know who these people are, but they are doing it just because they love it and don't necessarily need to like go race or anything.
- 59:10Speaker 1: Um not seeking any type of attention.
- 59:12Speaker 2: Yeah, so that kind of stuff I I really I really find um really inspiring quiet crushers man yeah, there's a lot of them.
- 59:19Speaker 1: Shout out to him.
- 59:20Speaker 1: That's part of like part of the port in the podcast.
- 59:22Speaker 1: Like yes, we have our interviews with like professionals, but like I got my people like me on Well my favorite point is like there's these, all these killers in Colorado and abroad and all over the place, and I'm like that you need to find out about Dan Metzger, like you gotta know him.
- 59:38Speaker 2: Yeah, and there's so many people I could name just in this area that, like I follow on Strava and you see him putting the work in and then all of a sudden they go out and have this amazing performance.
- 59:49Speaker 2: You're like I knew they could do that Like look at what they're doing.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Right, that's crazy, man.
- 59:52Speaker 1: All right Question for you what's your, what's your walkout song dude?
- 59:57Speaker 2: Oh dude, oh man, um like getting pumped for a race like you're getting you're like, how much do you weigh?
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: How much do I weigh?
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: Buck 50, buck 50, so you're lightweight so you got a lightweight fight.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: Oh, your walkout song.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: They're, they're them in the lights.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: You're walking out what's playing um this is a new question, by the the way I like it, yeah, and I am into the whole like emo thing.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: All right, that kind of gets me pumped up, like taking back Sunday kind of shit.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: Sure, yeah, yeah, I always do a lot of brand new.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: Do you know who?
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: they are yeah, absolutely yeah.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: So something from them.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: Wait, what's?
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: that song, the quiet things that.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: Dude good shot Good shit Stuff like that is usually what I got to have like a little bit of like anger in me fired up.
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: So, like go throw down with people.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: All right, I like it.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: I like it.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: What's your take on Bigfoot, you know.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: I'm going to say no.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Like I think there probably is some like dudes living out in the woods who, like, are really hairy and like roaming around living off the land.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: Could be that probably have been caught on camera, but I'm gonna say no, okay, you also work a full-time job, so what's your take on ai?
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Because I know a lot of that's like a hot button topic now um, so yeah, I work at a university.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: Um, so I have some student employees that work for me that are younger than me and like I'm just like don't know really anything about ai and I had to like work on this project at work and they're like use chat gpt to help you.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: I was like all right.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: I was like 24 hours later I was like this is amazing, I going to use this all the time.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: So, uh, as scary as it is, when you see like the weird uh AI photos and stuff, I mean I think if we can use it for good, like it's going to improve things, you know, like if we can get robots to the point to where they can do all of our jobs and I can just go chill at home and run, I'm all for absolutely it's true, I never thought about like that.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, as long as I can like pay my mortgage and like be able to do that, I'm fucking I'm stoked, absolutely.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: What's your, uh, what's your take on the aliens dude?
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: uh, yeah, I totally believe in aliens, um, but I think they are us yeah, like they're the future.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: They're humans that have evolved some sort, and so I, honestly, am pretty convinced that we are living in a simulation, and humans are just I'm so happy you said this.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: Just created us and are watching us do our thing, but they've evolved and they are the aliens.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: Whoa Dude, that's deep.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: No, dude, I struggle with this a lot Because I think about the simulation theory very often and it's like how much does that change the fabric of reality?
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: And like what we think about and all these different things, Like if we, if this is a true simulation I mean the probability of it being a simulation mathematically apparently is very high, yeah, Like more likely than not.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: Yeah, but like how does it change things?
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: That's a weird part, you know like it's nice to think about, when I'm like stressing about stupid stuff in life and like I'm super anxious, I'm like, oh, none of this matters, it's just a simulation anyways.
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: That's so true.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: Do run a fucking rock spinning at negative nine point eight one meters per square.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: Think about it.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: Around the sun.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: A flaming ball, yeah.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: And then we only, if we're lucky, we live 90-something years.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: So go run down a mountain full speed, that's right.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: Well, let's see.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: I don't.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: So you work too.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: I work a full-time job and I think about that and I'm like dude, why do I even get stressed about this shit?
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: It doesn't fucking matter.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: So yeah, the aliens are I.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: I could see it very much being us from the future.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: I think that that, or something to the degree or like something interdimensional, but it is awfully funny when you think about it.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: Like they, they're kind of humanoid, that's how it's described big eyes.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: It's like if we were to lose all the testosterone, which is pretty unfortunate and, you know, go into the future.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: That's what would happen.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: Sure, it was what we look like, you know, and go into the future, that's what would happen.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: Sure, it was what we look like, you know.
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: And I mean, if they want to come like take us out or like laser beam us or something like I'm ready for it, come on, bring it on, we're ready, come on.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: As a civilization, I mean, listen, dude, we're America, we're back to back world war champions.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: Bring it on.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: That Bring it on.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Listen, we won an independence day.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: We can, we can, we can win again.
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: Well, dude, thanks for coming on the pod.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Great conversation, hopefully the first of many.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Um, yeah, dude, appreciate it, good luck.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: I actually I didn't ask you what's next.
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: What do you got planned?
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: I think we're going to do a Houston half marathon, all right, and then I think I'm going to do black Canyon a hundred K.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Oh, hell yes dude.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: That's kind of where I'm at right now.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Put yourself in the ring for that.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: That's a great race.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: It's a good opportunity to like get your name out there.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I haven't done a hundred K in a while, and so it's yeah, I'm going to say and I don't do speed, I'm going to have to do speed.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: So the half marathon is going to kind of like force me to do some stuff.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: And then, yeah, um, black Canyon.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: And then I really want to do a never summer as well.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: It's a great race, yeah, but I'm kind of torn between doing a hundred around that time.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: I would love to do a high loan Some.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: Uh, if I can get in there, I would definitely do that.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: If not, I think I would do probably the never summer double.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: That kind of intrigues me, doing back-to-back days like that.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: And then I got to do bike speak.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: That's right, come on back.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: We'll see, but I mean, by the time September rolls around, it's like who knows where I'm going to be at.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: That's true, that's true.
