- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Good morning to both of you.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: How are you doing?
- 0:26unknown: Morning.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Good morning, Jay.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: I'm doing well.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: How about yourself?
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: I'm doing well, thanks.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: We have a new look.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: We do, yeah.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: What do you what do you think?
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: Our new studio look.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: If you're watching on YouTube, you get to see our new look.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: We uh we want to try something a little different.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: If you're listening, give us give us a try on on the Bishop Kevin Sweeney's YouTube channel.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: Check a couple episodes out that way.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: A little different kind of thing going on.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: So um, did did you get a get a day off yesterday?
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: I know sometimes you take Wednesdays off, or there was a lunch for our retired priests in St.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: Anne's in Parsippany, uh, which was uh really great.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: It's always good to see our retired priests and many of them still very active in ministry, and that opportunity to come together in fraternity is uh really important.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: And actually we had a couple of speakers about um advanced directives and filling out paperwork before someone may go to the hospital.
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: Uh I think anybody maybe who well themselves or maybe if you have an elderly parent uh or m family member uh having some of those things in place, power of attorney, healthcare proxy.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: Um so Father Rich Bay does a great job uh or organizing, coordinating our outreach and contact with our retired priests.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: So uh very, very nice gathering.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: And then um We'll have photos in the beacon next week, right?
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: And then I in the afternoon, uh later in the later afternoon, evening, I saw um the chosen.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: Uh oh yes.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: Uh I had heard from a couple, Tim Potter, who works in the Dio's big fan, a priest friend in Brooklyn.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: Uh he just texted and said, Wow.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: Uh and wow is right.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: Um it's so you were having sort of a virtual watch party.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: Something like that, right?
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: Uh and more than three hours.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: It started at three, it finished at like 20 20 after six because it was three episodes.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: I thought maybe each episode would be about 45 minutes.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: I was I hadn't looked beforehand then.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: So um there was an intermission.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: When they they said before there would be an intermission, I said, wow.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: So they did two episodes, and then uh two hours and twenty minutes in, there was an intermission.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then another probably uh 50 minutes or so.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: So you're binging the chosen, sounds like yeah, I guess in the theater.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: So uh seen it on a big screen.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, it was on the big screen.
- 2:39SPEAKER_03: It's in it's out in theaters, it's gonna come out in streaming, but okay.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: Um it is so um Peter's confession, um, you are the Christ, the Messiah, the Son, at Cesarea Philippi, which is a classic scriptural text and more important moment.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: I forget exactly which gospel, it may be in more than one, but um they I never I'll never think of Cesarea Philippi exactly the same way.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: And when Jesus says um you are the rock, and on this you this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: You see a reference to a gates of hell uh in in the this pagan real temple that they stop at outside of Cesarea Philippi.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: Um covers the death of John the Baptist.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: Um there's a depiction of the visitation.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: Um it's just so beautifully done.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: Uh and I last week I said Zachariah, I meant to say um Zebedee.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: Uh Zachariah was portrayed in the uh they had the the naming of uh his name will be John when they were gonna name him Zachariah.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but um Zebedee, the father of James and John, and uh Salome, uh I thought her name was Maria.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: Uh I often called her Mrs.
- 3:53SPEAKER_03: Zebedee because they say that they were in their boat with their father Zebedee and then left.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: They don't mention late later in the Gospels.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: Um uh the mother of James and John comes up and asks Jesus that one would sit at his right and his left.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: And there was a reference to that yesterday, which was puts it in such a human context.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: It's um as we talked with Jerry Jenkins.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Jerry Jenkins last last week was um our our guest, the father of the creator of the chosen, who himself is writing the the uh book ver the novel version of the chosen series.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: And um the this past weekend, I think I mentioned it was coming up.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: We had Boy Scout Mass on Saturday, which was great.
- 4:32SPEAKER_03: Boy uh excuse me, Scouting Mass, because Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: Right, yes, yeah.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: And m Sunday morning, thanks to Sister Teresa Lee, and as always, my senior Gino and the staff and volunteers of the cathedral make everyone feel so welcome in the beautiful, vibrant community.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: I celebrated the um 11 10 30 or 1130 mass uh for World Day for Consecrated Life, which um we had probably close to 50 um religious sisters, brothers, priests, uh so great being with them.
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: And then in the afternoon, um the ecumenical prayer service uh for Black History Month, um which was wonderful, uh uh preacher Bishop Moore, uh from um I think he's serving in Washington, D.C.
- 5:18SPEAKER_03: and you have incredible fiery homily.
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: So Bishop of what type of Methodists.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: Uh um really beautiful, picking up tips from from these folks.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: Or are they picking up tips from you?
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: No, I think we'll well we have something to something to learn from we can learn from each other.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: And that's was part of you know, and there was probably um eight ministers, uh preachers or pastors uh um in in the sanctuary that were part of the committee that helped to prepare, and then there was another probably ten or twelve ministers um from different communities in the city.
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: Um so it was great, yeah.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, second year you've done that uh at the cathedral with Monsignor Gino and the staff there.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: And we did some posting on that, right, Cecile?
- 6:02SPEAKER_03: Thanks to Cecile for the posting.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: You can see the one bishop, he just seemed so excited.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: He was on fire, yeah.
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: And so um now we're um fast approaching the holy season of Lent.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: Um I too fast we I mentioned there's um some material online for those who might be concerned.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: It's the um second time I think since 1945.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: I think 2018, I thought it was recently, that um Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine's Day.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: It was 2018.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: Um so yeah, some real great um resources out there for those who how to uh Catholics can, or Catholic couples especially, can celebrate Valentine's Day.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: You ready for that?
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, have a priest do heart shakes.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: That's one.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, someone said have red ashes.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Uh but uh there's one, it's uh it's in my article on the beacon that had seven kind of practical tips.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Um so um Well, Valentine's should be every day anyway.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: Like Thanksgiving, right?
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: Mother's Day or Father's Day, really.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: Um so and I just realized someone said I knew it was coming, but uh I didn't know the date, and I'm not sure which team because sometimes the I should know the Yankees' date, but um well, the Super Bowl on Sunday, and one of the great things about the Super Bowl is that spring training is right around the corner, and with the Super Bowl now being a little later than it used to be, spring training is literally around the corner because it starts next week.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: Oh someone said pitchers and catchers were uh reporting on February 14th.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: So triple header, Valentine's Day, Ash Wednesday, and pitchers and catchers.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: So a lot to look forward to and prepare for.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: We want to especially get ready for Lent.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so just uh not to put you on the spot, but maybe I will put you on the spot, Bishop.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: It's just to be clear, there is no dispensation on correct.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: There's some diocese in 2018 put statements out that say, but um love involves sacrifice, right?
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: Sacrum fatre to make holy.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: Uh so if um yes, uh you can have a if you really want, and and many um uh certainly men for their wives or um and and and wives for their husbands, I think also um want to uh do something special, uh like a meal, you know, a special, that's fine.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: But if it's uh if if they both like steak then, or one even likes steak, then or it's probably better to have that meal on Thursday, or maybe um Tuesday for Mardi Gras.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: But um Cecile, uh as a married person, uh is it even gonna be a big conflict or difficulty to uh well I have a daughter, so celebrating Valentine's is a lot different um sin for the past five years.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: So uh Do yourself and your wife have a tradition?
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: We're good with um going out Friday.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: We already have a reservation at a nice Italian restaurant in Montclair.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: So we'll be we'll be good fasting and but um uh a love note to God is um a great way to start uh start um uh Lent on Ash Wednesday, and that is Valentine's Day, all the better.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: Uh so uh but it wouldn't make sense to have it uh Ash Wednesday's the more important um again, Valentine's Day, love is something we should be trying to live every day.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: And um, yes, we need special moments, but um sometimes those the time for God, love God, right?
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: Before within my and um so um well thank you for indulging me.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: I didn't need to put you on the spot.
- 9:34SPEAKER_03: Sorry to disappoint you if you're hoping.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: I just just set the record straight.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: But um I I've been getting some media inquiries about it.
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: But uh Okay, good.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: So why don't we should we pray?
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: Today we're f recording on February 8th, which is the feast day of two saints, um Saint Jerome Emiliani, Emiliani, and Saint Josephine Bakita.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: Josephine Bakita was canonized by Pope John Paul II, Saint Pope John Paul II in the year 2000.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: Great story.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: I won't even begin because look her up.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's like a movie.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: Um, and speaking of movies, there's a movie coming about out about Mother Cabrina.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: We'll have Mother Cabrini will have more information on that in the weeks to come.
- 10:17SPEAKER_03: I think it's coming out at the beginning of March.
- 10:19SPEAKER_03: And Saint Jerome Emiliani um died of the plague, um, caring for those who were sick and suffering, I think, in the year 1537.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: So um at Mass, the celebrant may we these are these are what we called optional memorials.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: So um you can celebrate the Mass of the Day for you know the week in ordinary time.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: Or you could celebrate for St.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: Jerome uh from the we call it the Common of Holy Men and Women for educators.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: He was an educator.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: Josephine ended up uh being an educator as well, um but also from the common of virgins.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: So um we'll uh in invoke both of their intercession now as we pray.
- 10:59SPEAKER_03: Placing ourselves in God's presence, name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: Amen.
- 11:06SPEAKER_03: Oh God of Father of mercies, who sent Saint Jerome Emiliani as a helper and father to orphans, grant through his intercession that we may preserve faithfully the spirit of adoption by which we are called and truly are your children.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: And loving God, we also remember that you led Saint Josephine Baquita from abject slavery to the dignity of being your daughter and a bride of Christ.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: Grant, we pray that by her example we may constantly show love for the Lord Jesus crucified, remaining steadfast in charity and prompt to show compassion.
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: We ask these in all our prayers through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: Name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: Amen.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: And um we uh um Saint Josephine Baquita, the first uh Sudan person from Sudan to be canonized the saint, so that um African nation of Sudan.
- 12:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: Um so So what are we talking about today, Bishop?
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: What's what's our topic?
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: And we have an announcement to make, right, Cecil.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: Yes, we do.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Um, first of all, thanks again for having me.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Thanks for being on.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: I always have this uh fear, two fears when being on the podcast is one, I'm gonna inspire a blooper reel with all the outtakes, and then two is um I'll be that first guest that cries, you know, when you talked about your cat, that was kind of but no, I'm seriousness.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Um I'm glad to be here and um and um talking about my faith gets me very excited.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: And then also, too, it's just part of the baptismal call to talk about our faith.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: And we're gonna talk a little bit about young our young adults and um and the Eucharistic revival.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: Uh, but um I think you shared when you were on previously, you have a long history of uh particularly youth ministry, right?
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Uh yes.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Um I've I've joined youth ministry.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: My mom actually dragged me to be part of confirmation class in our diocese at the time anyway.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Uh to be uh confirmed, you had to be, you entered in high school and ninth grade and then tenth grade.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: It was a two-year program.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: And and so my mom like dragged me to join confirmation.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: She wanted me to be confirmed and complete my second sacrament of initiation.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: And I ended up really like just falling in love and finding some purpose in my life, uh, joining confirmation.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: I have to give much credit to the youth minister there, uh Lori D.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Gaetano, who is she is still there.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: She's the youth minister at St.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: Anthony's uh church in Pisic, which is my home parish.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Um my parish now is St.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Philip's, and just um as you grow up, I guess, you kind of change location geographically, and also my daughter's uh marriage and family, yeah.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: So um, but uh St.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Anthony's I'm still very part much part a part of a teaching confirmation there.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: And uh so yes, I do have a long history of being very active in the church uh through youth youth ministry.
- 14:17SPEAKER_03: So how many world youth days?
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: I attended six world youth days, yes.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Uh three with uh Pope John Paul in Paris, Rome and Toronto, and then it was Pope Benedict.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: It would be uh Cologne and Sydney.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Cologne, Sydney, and uh Madrid.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: So never with Pope Francis though.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: Okay, wow.
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: So the two of you crossed over at how many three Sydney and Cologne, I guess, right?
- 14:40SPEAKER_03: We were both at, yes.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: Um I mean you would have to tell me we're yeah, I would uh four now.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: Um uh Denver, okay, yeah, uh Sydney, Cologne, and um now this past summer in um in in Portugal in um Lisbon.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: Uh so we are gonna make an announcement today, and we're gonna announce it again tomorrow because tomorrow is the first of a number of monthly um evenings of revival for young adults.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: Everyone is welcome, but Sister Teresa Lee, Father Alex Nevett, uh Cecile, many others have been working um to invite our young adult community to be part of our Eucharistic revival.
- 15:20SPEAKER_03: Uh Monsignor Hunt at St.
- 15:21SPEAKER_03: Gerard's hosted an evening of revival in um in September.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: There's been a few that I haven't been able to make, but uh actually this coming Friday evening, tomorrow, we're gonna be at Prince of Peace Chapel in on the campus of William Patterson University, the chaplain there, Father Augustino Torres, uh, of the uh Franciscan friar of the renewal, has been doing great work uh with the chaplains there.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: There's a group Corazon Puro that does great work in promoting chastity and and the theology of the body and a lot of outreach to in the young adult community.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: So um I was listening yesterday to um a uh interview uh with Bishop Andrew Cousins, who's the kind of moving force leader of the bishop's efforts, taking the baton from Bishop Baron to organize this three-year Eucharistic revival in the country and especially to um organize the upcoming National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis this coming July.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: Um Bishop Cousins in this interview, I it was I I may reprint the words at some point because he talked about um being a young person.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: He was just about to enter the seminary when he attended World Youth Day in Den in Denver, Colorado.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: I was had finished my first year in the in the seminary, in a major seminary, and the he said that experience changed his life.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: And um Cecile, you can speak to um that experience of World Youth Day.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: But these events where large amounts of the church, the church comes together in large numbers, can make such a difference.
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: And so uh I want to um encourage, and especially our young people and parents or grandparents to the the Congress is not until July, but the registration deadlines are fast approaching, so we still have room.
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: It's a it's expensive, uh, but um it's worth it if you can find a way.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: Um so we'll have that information online.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: You can go to our website to learn more about being able to register for the National University Congress.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: But uh, thanks be to God and the generosity of others, we received a donation that allows us to offer two free trips, and we're gonna offer them to two young adults.
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: We're gonna we're announcing that today and we'll announce it tomorrow.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: And we're gonna the young adults will have a month or just about uh until the end of February.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: Cecile can speak about more of the details.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: But um, we did this for young people, um, also for World Youth Day.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: We had a couple of winners that want a trip to a scholarship basically to um be able to join us at World Youth Day.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: And so now we want to do that again for our young adult community and to hear from our young adults what the Eucharist means to them, the impact of the Eucharist in their lives.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: Um, and we're so we're gonna ask them to um submit videos.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: Uh I think 90 seconds.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Right, uh 90 seconds, uh a 90-second vi video stating what the Eucharist means to you.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: And I I think this is an opportunity for young adults to really uh first of all, the technology is out there.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: The young adults are into social media platforms, so you need you uh don't stress about it.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: There are plenty of templates to create a really interesting and compelling video.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: And I think it just really goes along with the talent.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Uh, one of the greatest artists in Catholic history is Michelangelo.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: And the Pieta.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: How old was Michelangelo when he created the Pieta?
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: He was 23 years old.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: A lot of people don't really know that.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: And he was 23 years old, and uh, I think it took him two years to complete, and then so then he would have been 25 years old.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: And here, there's a young adult creating art for the Catholic Church.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: And um, so I guess that's just my way of saying uh to all the young adults out there, uh create this contest and also too be a part of history, they're saying, right?
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: You had a column about like being part of the history.
- 19:23SPEAKER_03: First time in uh since 1943, they're having a national Eucharistic Congress.
- 19:27SPEAKER_03: First time since 1976, there was the International Eucharistic Congress here in Philadelphia.
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: So absolutely historic and and and really could be life-changing.
- 19:35SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: Bishop Cousins said one of his goals is that um uh saints are gonna be raised up.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: Um they also he'll uh I will put the um interview um on on the on the screen.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: It'll be in the post it.
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: Uh it's uh the revive.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: Um one of the um Catholic publishing companies has uh a podcast.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: OSV.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: Oh yes.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: Um so um uh there's also gonna be a um national pilgrimage from north where Bishop Cousins is at the headwaters, I think, of the Mississippi, all the way in the top of Minnesota, and they're gonna go down to Indianapolis from uh McGivney Shrine, Father McGivney, blessed Father McGivney, uh in Connecticut, um, we'll start from the basically the Atlantic Ocean and process with the Eucharist to uh Indianapolis.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: From uh the southern border in Texas, they're gonna proceed north and from San Francisco.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: Uh just to clarify, this is all on foot?
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: Is this all on the well just about apparently just about they said uh they can do 20 miles in a day.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: There'sn't always they're gonna stop at churches, so there isn't always a church within 20 miles.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: He said they may have to drive uh some portions, but the majority is gonna be walking.
- 20:48SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: Twenty miles is a lot.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: I I did we did the app I did the Appalachian Trail with with a friend.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: We did like 10 miles a day.
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: So they're they're gonna be walking quick, right?
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, so um, but you know, the opportunity to um uh uh express our joy, our our love for the Eucharist, for the Lord in the Eucharist, uh enthusiasm for the faith, um coming together, walking the journey, right?
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: Um even that synodal experience of uh the Holy Pope Francis in in encouraging us to consider how we encounter one another on the journey, how we listen to one another.
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, if you're gonna be walking a lot of miles together, you have time for conversation, you don't need to be speaking to each other on your phone.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: You can so uh so there'll be many blessings.
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: Maybe Cecile, just a little bit more about some of the details of the um uh contest.
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: I think uh we'll put a premium on uh creativity, right?
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: Uh I guess uh I haven't thought about, but maybe some will have mute uh soundtrack or yeah, well, I mean, really it's it's free reign for the most part.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: Videos will be judged uh by relevance to the theme creativity express and technical ability.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: I myself am not a judge, so um um but there were the people that will be judging.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: Part of the committee organizing, yes, right.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: And um and uh this is for 18 to 35 year olds uh practicing Catholics and parishes from the Diocese of Patterson.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: The pair could be a married couple, uh siblings or friends.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: Uh we did this is something we discuss, is like 18 to 35, that's a huge age range.
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: So uh really it's um so the the those who are gonna make the video to uh teams of two, two by send them out, two by two, uh you just need to be um prepared to share a room together, right?
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: Because that's be part of the uh the way that uh we register for the um uh Congress uh the hotel rooms are reserved, they're at a at a premium, thank God we have them.
- 23:25SPEAKER_03: And uh but again we need to get those registrations in.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: But um the the winners of the contest, the two winners will uh their airfare, the hotel, and the registration for the conf conference, uh the Congress will all be covered.
- 23:37SPEAKER_03: Um hopefully we're gonna be somewhere in the area of 150 um from the diocese.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: Uh that's that's the goal.
- 23:45SPEAKER_03: If not 200, we have room for 200.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: Um so uh but um um and go go back and check out the episode with Father Alex Neville.
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: That's right, where we uh give more details about about the trip, the pilgrimage.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: What are you looking forward to in Indianapolis?
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: Oh um yeah, the church alive.
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: Um I know there's some maybe some who don't like crowds, maybe aren't crazy about traveling, but um taking that step to make that pilgrimage, uh make some sacrifices.
- 24:18SPEAKER_03: We as many have said, God has never outdone in generosity.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: And if we um and there's certainly a sacrifice for those who are gonna pay the cost to um, you know, for for the cost of the trip.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: We try to keep it as low as possible, but in these times that we're in with inflation and other uh costs, um uh that's certainly a sacrifice.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: But the blessings that are gonna come, I know are gonna be um many, many fold uh more than what the what we can give, the Lord will multiply.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: And um uh it's something we need in our church, in our in our country, um to see those alive with the faith, young people especially, but of all ages.
- 24:59SPEAKER_03: Uh families are gonna come together.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: There's uh family packages for the um for the the Congress.
- 25:06SPEAKER_03: And um so just to see the whole church together um in prayer, united.
- 25:13SPEAKER_03: Um uh Bishop Cousins and you talked about, you know, the Holy Spirit, the presence of the Holy Spirit, calling down the Holy Spirit uh in these moments, uh really can bring us back to Pentecost, the the birth of the church.
- 25:25SPEAKER_03: And um so um entering into the Holy Season of Lent now might be something maybe you're if you can give up something that's gonna be able to put a few dollars away that could help with uh the cost of the or again if there's someone out there that may not be able to go themselves, but um would like to help a young person to go, um you can be in contact with us about making a donation to sponsor or help to sponsor.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: Uh we'd love to give out some more scholarships.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: Uh uh so we'll we'll do that if if if we if we receive you know the support.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: Uh but there's gonna be many, many blessings and um as many as possible.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: We hope we'll and we'll go um uh in person physically, but um it's certainly gonna be a time when the whole church can be united spiritually in prayer, and so many, I'm sure, are gonna be joining the pilgrimage and the and the Congress virtually and um and united in prayer, and that's gonna um bring many blessings, many blessings.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: And we have so Father Augustino is gonna be a guest speaker there, and also Chris Stefanic, right?
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: Is he is he on that?
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: I believe so.
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're obviously gonna they're gonna have the best of speakers uh there for the Bishop Aaron, so yeah, a bunch of great speakers.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: Um what is happening locally in the Diocese of Paterson um to support the Eucharistic revival?
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: I know, I know a bunch of stuff.
- 26:45SPEAKER_02: We got a we got a letter, kind of surprised.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: We got a letter to the editor um that somebody sent to the beacon.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: You're not doing enough for the Eucharistic revival.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: And I was coming, keep reminding us to whether that's okay.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: I I was a little surprised for that feedback because we are doing a ton and and uh we're do we're doing even more.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: We have these these um I think one response is that a a disciple should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, right?
- 27:11SPEAKER_03: Uh so uh um what we did what we're doing at a diosin level, the three-year revival um the program put together uh by the USCCB uh and prepared and implemented the first year um was more on the diocesan level.
- 27:28SPEAKER_03: So we had a uh a diocesan year of the Eucharist, uh I think in 2022.
- 27:33SPEAKER_03: Uh so this current year is supposed to be at the parish level.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: So different parishes are doing different things, and I know many parishes are.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: These um young adult revivals um are part of uh our diocin effort supporting parishes, but um, but this year the the focus on the parish, and and maybe we'll um we'll um have some uh of those on who are participating.
- 27:52SPEAKER_03: I know I hear all the time um uh different things that are that are that are being done in in parishes.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: Uh Sussex County is preparing a um uh uh 40 hours or 40 days of of um of Eucharistic devotion.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: Uh so um there's there's a lot that being done.
- 28:08SPEAKER_03: But in terms of walking and chewing gum at the same time, we're also in the synod.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: And so uh as you asked the question, it reminds me uh as we were doing the year of the Eucharist on the di in the diocese, we were also beginning our participation in the synod.
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: Now we'll have more on this in the weeks to come, but um we've been asked to host uh three, two to three, we're gonna have three listening sessions in this what's being called the interim stage of the Synod on Synodality.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: Um the assembly that took place this past October, and the next one that will take place in the coming of October October.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: We're being asked um to reflect on the experience and that synthesis report that came out.
- 28:45SPEAKER_03: Um so again, we'll have more on that, but um, but but that's something else that that's happening on a diocesan level.
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: So it's great.
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: Um there's uh I you know we send things out to pastors and parishes uh um and we try to balance uh not bombarding them with so many things uh because we uh having been a pastor myself, I know um there's plenty that keep us busy, right, in in the parish level and getting stuff from the diocese.
- 29:09SPEAKER_03: We try our best to participate in those things, but uh as we all know, there's only so many hours in the day.
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: So but uh get involved somehow.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, locally or today's.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: If there are those listening or watching that um are doing things in their particular parish and want to share that with us, we'd be glad to pass it along.
- 29:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, please do.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, I thought I think um my experience with going to adoration and the Eucharist happened actually on Holy Thursday.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: Um back to my youth ministry moves root.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: And this is something like everyone can do themselves, is uh so uh our youth minister, she ran at like a 15-passenger van, and after Holy Thursday Mass, we visited the churches in something called Eucharistic visitation.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: Is that the like official name?
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: Um yes, there's another name for it.
- 29:51SPEAKER_03: But no, the stations that um the in Rome they have something called the station churches where visits are made, I think, throughout Lent.
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: But but Holy Thursday, there's also a custom of trying to go, I think, to seven churches because every church, um, Holy Thursday night after the Mass of the Lord's Supper until midnight, um, accompanying the Lord in in the garden during his time of right, exactly, to stay awake because uh the apostles couldn't stay awake for him.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: And uh and uh we actually called it church hopping.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: I know it sounds uh I know it sounds like bar hopping.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: Holy hopping.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, we called it church hopping.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: And um, that was like my first experience, really experiencing the Eucharist uh through adoration.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: And uh I guess because we lived in a city, there are like nine or seven parishes in Passake.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, Patterson has ten parishes, fourteen, I think.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: Or fourteen, there you go.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: And you could see like each of the churches decorate just so beautiful and and very distinct and very different.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: How they I guess it's the ultimate.
- 30:45SPEAKER_03: Ultimate reservation reservation, yeah, right, right.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: And and it's just so beautiful to see how every church decorates and makes it so distinct to, I guess, whatever their community is.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, there was one church I remember.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: Again, I'm 16, fi, 17 years old, and there's one church we call it like the Disneyland Church because they just had like so many different exhibits, and then there was the the uh monstra monstrance with um with Jesus exposed, and it and that really taught me uh about appreciation, appreciating going to adoration because then it was put into context where this is Jesus's probably scariest moment of his life right before he was about to be crucified.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: And here us as teenagers, we also have those same fears in our lives.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: And um, I guess something too to say to young adults, speaking of um, I guess I'm looking at the sheep here, and um, you know, you have nothing to lose when you sit before the the Blessed Sacrament, right?
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: St.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: Pope John Paul II, don't be afraid, you know.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: Right, right, right.
- 31:45SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: And uh and I think that young adults uh the diocese is offering several opportunities to be together with your peers.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: And I know for sure on Friday, I bet you the music will be beautiful at um William Patterson's.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: Yes, that's right.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and um that's it's another thing, it's just the March will promote it, but um it'll be at um where I'm going actually for confirmation this Saturday, uh St.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: Mary's Parish in Pompton Lakes.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: Uh so uh that's a Sunday evening in March.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: Um and then there's one scheduled for April might be at St.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: Paul's, but we'll get those uh was in there, right?
- 32:16SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 32:17SPEAKER_03: So um you can Yeah, we'll check the show notes.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: Also, too, like this is something it actually your predecessor, uh Bishop Saratelli, he described like going to adoration, like um, all right, so especially like if you play sports, um when you're out in the sun, the the you're physically changed.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: Your skin's changed.
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, right, sure.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: And and uh but and you and sometimes you don't feel erased because maybe you're you're you're just joining enjoying the many activities in the sun and you're changed.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: And here when you are in front of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, you're changed you're changed in the inside.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: And the sun, S-O-N, shines upon you.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: So I thought that was like the best and easiest way I ever like heard.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, I remember because uh in 2005 there was a year of the Eucharist.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: I don't know if that's right.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: And I think that's that that's the year I remember him saying it and describing it in that way.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: And and yeah, it made sense.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: Like, oh yeah, yes, when you're before the Blessed Sacrament, you are being changed in your soul.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: And on Holy Thursday night, we focus on that time when Jesus spent in the garden the certainly the last supper, giving us the Eucharist, uh, and then his time in the garden.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: And as Cecile mentioned, uh that line where he said to the apostles when they kept falling asleep, uh, could you not watch one hour with me?
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: Those words um were the inspiration for Archbishop Fulton Sheen to promote a daily Eucharistic holy hour for priests and religious and anybody that could do it.
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: Um and uh he said it and all as only Archbishop Sheen could say it for those who remember Archbishop Sheen, uh, but um uh um he's he would say it's the only direct request that Jesus made in the scriptures, uh um maybe the specifics of it, but of his disciples.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: Could you not watch one hour with me?
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: Uh and so um as we all hopefully try to give time in prayer each day, rosary scripture reading.
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: But if you can find time to be in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, Bishop Barron will speak about having been a seminary rector and uh the importance of the holy hour, learning from the students and and he himself he he he he prays uh he says the first hour of the day every day is is is his Eucharistic holy hour.
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: Um the seminary in um Emmitsburg.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: Um Father Monsignor Andrew Baker, I think, is the um rector and encourages forcers in each of the seminarians to take that time an hour every day.
- 34:54SPEAKER_03: A holy hour.
- 34:55SPEAKER_03: How is your holy hour?
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: How are you living your holy hours?
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: Well I heard in the interview with um you know when Fulton Sheen was canonized, um someone who who canonized, uh beatified.
- 35:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, beatified, sorry, yeah.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: So he he would get up so early and he'd just be before the Lord, you know, at 5 a.m.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: and just spend that time.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 35:15SPEAKER_03: Um so um we invite our young adults and all to join us for these evenings of revival.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: Share many of the things that are happening in the parishes just came to mind that last week uh for Catholic Schools Week, I was at Holy Spirit Parish in Pekwanak, Father Stephen Prisk, the pastor, and Sister Maria Antonelli, the principal, and we did a little tour of the school after mass, and uh one of the grades um had outside, as the some of we have some speaking of the talents, right, and the art.
- 35:42SPEAKER_03: Um there was a class, it might have been the second graders because they're preparing for Holy Communion.
- 35:46SPEAKER_03: They each did their own monstrance.
- 35:49SPEAKER_03: They made a beautiful um gold uh nice I think I saw the picture that joke.
- 35:56SPEAKER_03: They had a little white where the host would be, uh, and you could pick it up, and inside you saw they had a picture of the sacred heart.
- 36:04SPEAKER_03: They drew a picture of the sacred heart.
- 36:06SPEAKER_03: So um that uh he's present there in the Eucharist in the form of bread, but it's our Lord um who's who's there, and it was really, really beautiful.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: So as Cecile mentioned, um the use of our talents, use of art.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: I think of Bishop Barron and Word on Fire, um, the focus that they have on uh true, the transcendentals, true, the true, the good, and the beautiful.
- 36:27SPEAKER_03: But the and Bishop Barron often says, especially in our society and culture, we might we should probably start with the beautiful because that's a human experience.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: Humans can appreciate beauty.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: Uh and I when I think of the chosen, you know, they that's an artistic um form of bringing the word of God to life.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: And uh so we should um be asking the spirit to guide us and the help of our blessed mother and the saints.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, how is the Lord asking each of us to give of our gifts and talents the service of the church and especially of our brothers and sisters in need?
- 36:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, and being close to the Lord in prayer and in his Eucharistic presence is a great way to uh be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and and his call in in our lives.
- 37:09SPEAKER_03: So um, and you how are we gonna do that starting next Wednesday on Valentine's?
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, uh, excuse me, uh Ash Wednesday, right?
- 37:18SPEAKER_03: Uh so uh next Wednesday uh the 14th, we'll start that holy season of Lent, but don't wait till Wednesday to figure out what you're gonna give up or what you spiritual practice or um uh prayer, fasting and alms giving, the three um topics we hear Jesus speak about each year on Ash Wednesday, um when you give alms, when you fast, when you pray.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: Um so prayer needs to be we should be something we're doing for prayer.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Um alms giving, uh charity, love and action, and then fasting, yes, from meat on Fridays and uh fast and abstinence, abstaining from um eating in between meals on um Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
- 38:04SPEAKER_03: Uh and then but also uh giving up something that maybe we like or is enjoyable or that we can live without uh and make that sacrifice in love to to for a spiritual benefit.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: And what uh what are you guys giving up?
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: Have you thought about it?
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Or what are you or what are you doing for I do this every year?
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: French fries.
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: Oh wow, that's a good one.
- 38:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:26SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm still working on it, uh, but um we'll uh I'll I have a few things that are I'm considering at the moment and bringing the prayer.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: So good.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: I want to uh try to pray the rosary at least once a week.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: Um I was actually took yesterday off as playing a little disc golf, and I was I don't have the rosary memorized like you both of you probably do, but I was praying some Hail Marys and I was, man, I have to tell you, it was uh just so nice being out in the woods and clearing my head and and spending some time praying that way.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: And I was inspired.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: I think I'm gonna at least pray the rosary at least once a week during during Lent.
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: Aaron Powell One decade a day is another way to go if you can't do the whole thing.
- 39:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, my wife and I were talking about maybe maybe doing incorporating that into evening prayer a little bit.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: At least one decade.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: Thanks.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: Um Cecile, uh your experience um how many years teaching real uh confirmation?
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: Twenty-five.
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: We'll have you get a special recognition.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: I guess right after I went to college after um high school and um on and off, maybe call it volunteering, but uh as an actual catechist, maybe like 20 years.
- 39:38SPEAKER_03: And um what are you seeing in our young people these days?
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: Uh you're still teaching, are you still teaching?
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: I still teach, yes.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: Uh um a lot of challenges.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Uh, and I think part of it is uh because of cell phones, um, seeing that experience in our life.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, I remember when when I hosted uh two weeks ago and talking about that.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: And you could just see I don't want to say damage it's causing, but you could definitely see it's just they're they're a little more shyer.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Um because again, these are the young people that spent two years of their college uh high school years or junior high years.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: Staring at a screen and yet another screen.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: Right, exactly.
- 40:21SPEAKER_02: So they're interesting uh factor.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: Sorry to cut you off.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: Did did you know that Cecile was a catechist for not only someone who would later become a priest, but also someone who became a religious sister and also someone who became a cantor, uh former cantor at our uh cathedral.
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: So I I uh yeah, it was just fun to learn that, right?
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: So you you taught Father Father Caesar was one of them, right?
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: Maybe Father Caesar, yeah.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: The other two, um one would be uh sister uh Teresa Reyes, she she has passed away.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: Um she is um maybe four years younger than me, so we went to World U Day in 2002.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: Uh and I feel like she found her vocation there in Toronto and um and uh just God bless her.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: She was probably the holiest person I've ever met.
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: And uh and just yeah, and for those who'll have the opportunity to go on the to the National Across the Congress, um it vocations will come and holiness will will be fostered.
- 41:23SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, you'll um be encouraged uh um to when you see others that um are very um much deepening their faith that's been there, and others that are you know just kind of responded to an invitation and they find themselves there and they say, Wow, um the Lord is here and the Lord is asking something of me.
- 41:45SPEAKER_03: And um just that gathering uh on the on that kind of a level and the the music and prayer and testimony and preaching and uh and fun.
- 41:56SPEAKER_03: Bishop Baron's excuse me, Bishop Cousins said, you know, we're gonna have fun.
- 41:59SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 41:59SPEAKER_03: And youth world Utah is uh very important.
- 42:01SPEAKER_03: Very similar, yeah.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, I could I I could definitely attest to that because you were just talking about that third person is Louisa Torres, and uh and we went to World Utah in Rome together and in Toronto together.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: And even for me, I'm a lay woman, but I work for the church, and I know that comes from those experiences.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: When you have someone like Pope John Paul II saying, hey, you got this, the church is in your hands, you're empowered to do that.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: Well, I was empowered to do that, and it just it's it's working for the church has just been such a gift for me.
- 42:32SPEAKER_03: Right.
