- 0:15Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode seventy two of Cards
- 0:19Speaker 1: and Categories. I'm Mike Coolard firm as Ball, joined as
- 0:22Speaker 1: always by my very good friend also from as Ball,
- 0:25Speaker 1: Jeremy Brewer. We are speaking on the first day of
- 0:28Speaker 1: twenty twenty five here, and what are you looking forward
- 0:31Speaker 1: to this year? Any good resolutions? We didn't do a
- 0:34Speaker 1: resolution pod this year, but last year it was to
- 0:37Speaker 1: stay away from injured pictures. So I was wondering if
- 0:39Speaker 1: you had any other resolutions you wanted to set up
- 0:41Speaker 1: for failure going in into twenty five here.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Well, that one clearly clearly failed, like a whole week
- 0:47Speaker 2: or two in this draft season came in. So I
- 0:51Speaker 2: don't think any any big ones. I think we as
- 0:54Speaker 2: we talked about some streasure that new and kind of
- 0:57Speaker 2: one of our last podcasts, you know, I think being
- 0:59Speaker 2: a little bit discipline and some of the strategies we
- 1:01Speaker 2: talked about actually knowing, like building depth and you know,
- 1:04Speaker 2: actually thinking through the prospecting and things like that. But
- 1:08Speaker 2: I was say, any big fantasy ones. Do have a
- 1:10Speaker 2: few card collecting things I want to try to get
- 1:11Speaker 2: into do an older vintage set this year and trying
- 1:14Speaker 2: to you know, get into the fifty four set, I think,
- 1:18Speaker 2: and try to go after that one. That's gonna be
- 1:20Speaker 2: a haul. Yeah, a little little work for that one,
- 1:25Speaker 2: but a few little card resolutions to chase some some
- 1:29Speaker 2: big cards on my list. But otherwise just trying to
- 1:33Speaker 2: do you know, hit the gym and eat right like
- 1:35Speaker 2: everybody else, which that's gonna last for a whole week.
- 1:37Speaker 2: So how about you. Any any big resolutions for you.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Not that I can think of off the top of
- 1:43Speaker 1: my head. We're about to do some big house renovations
- 1:46Speaker 1: in my world, so that'll be quite the hurdle to
- 1:49Speaker 1: get through as we get into that over the next
- 1:52Speaker 1: couple of months. But otherwise, yeah, just kind of focusing
- 1:55Speaker 1: on trying to have fun with everything as much as
- 1:57Speaker 1: I possibly can. That the baseball season can be a
- 2:01Speaker 1: very long grind, and it's I'm very appreciative that we
- 2:04Speaker 1: get this time and space to talk about baseball and
- 2:07Speaker 1: cards and fantasy and so just making sure that we
- 2:10Speaker 1: have the most fun that we can have throughout twenty
- 2:12Speaker 1: twenty five here on this pod. And yeah, so we've
- 2:17Speaker 1: been off for a couple of weeks. As you stated,
- 2:19Speaker 1: our last pod was on an odd anew kind of
- 2:22Speaker 1: overview back on episode seventy one. Certainly check that out
- 2:25Speaker 1: if you want some more kind of like Dynasty Stop
- 2:27Speaker 1: Talk and things like that. This pod will be very
- 2:31Speaker 1: cards focused because we had two weeks of news that
- 2:35Speaker 1: we went through and there were lots and lots of signings,
- 2:38Speaker 1: but also one momentous, really sad moment that happened over
- 2:42Speaker 1: the past two weeks, as Ricky Henderson passed away on
- 2:45Speaker 1: December twentieth, five days short of his sixty sixth birthday.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So going forward in my personal life, I'm actually going
- 2:52Speaker 1: to celebrate Christmas more as like Ricky Henderson's birthday. Maybe
- 2:55Speaker 1: I'll even make Ricky Henderson my treetopper, because what a
- 2:59Speaker 1: momentous career was. This is a player who obviously is
- 3:02Speaker 1: a Hall of Famer, one time MVP, ten time All Star,
- 3:05Speaker 1: two World Series three Silver Sluggers, only one Gold Glove,
- 3:08Speaker 1: although deserved certainly many more based on how his fielding
- 3:12Speaker 1: was and the way it rates up historically. Also, I mean,
- 3:16Speaker 1: this is a guy who compared to other players, I
- 3:19Speaker 1: would say, you know, in his era of the seventies,
- 3:22Speaker 1: late seventies and throughout the eighties, Henderson rates really well
- 3:26Speaker 1: in terms of what we're looking at in modern analytics.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Had just a great walk rate, a career four oh
- 3:33Speaker 1: one OBP, which you don't see out of anything that's
- 3:36Speaker 1: you know, not a slugger. Obviously, the career record holder
- 3:41Speaker 1: in stolen bases that's never even going to be touched
- 3:43Speaker 1: at fourteen hundred and six stolen bases. Same with runs.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I don't know if anybody's going to touch this runs
- 3:49Speaker 1: record that Ricky set with two hundred ninety five career runs.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Only player in history with more than two thousand runs,
- 3:57Speaker 1: three thousand hits, and two thousand walks. I just coincidentally,
- 4:02Speaker 1: when he passed, I was amidst reading Howard Bryant's biography
- 4:06Speaker 1: on him, called Ricky, which I recommend everybody go out
- 4:09Speaker 1: there and read. It's a fantastic book from Bryant on
- 4:13Speaker 1: not only Ricky, but just kind of Ricky's place in
- 4:17Speaker 1: America overall, in terms of coming from Oakland and what
- 4:20Speaker 1: he went through growing up actually was like more of
- 4:23Speaker 1: like a football player coming up, so like that was
- 4:26Speaker 1: a big portion of why I think he was able
- 4:28Speaker 1: to physically handle all of those stool and bases that
- 4:30Speaker 1: we don't see other players do that the way that
- 4:32Speaker 1: Ricky has, and so, yeah, I think this is a guy,
- 4:36Speaker 1: especially if you read that book by Howard Bryant, you'll
- 4:38Speaker 1: get a better understanding of how he was misportrayed I
- 4:41Speaker 1: think in the media, and so Henderson a little bit
- 4:44Speaker 1: maybe before our time. We're a little bit more of
- 4:46Speaker 1: like the Griffy generation of kids. And so I certainly
- 4:50Speaker 1: got more into Ricky as he hung around in the
- 4:53Speaker 1: latter part of his career his twenty five year career,
- 4:56Speaker 1: played for nine teams. And we've got lots of stuff
- 4:59Speaker 1: to cover for the personal PC that we're gonna make
- 5:02Speaker 1: for Ricky in the in the back half the main
- 5:05Speaker 1: portion of this pod. So we'll get into a little
- 5:07Speaker 1: bit more of the stats and stories and stuff like that,
- 5:09Speaker 1: but anything that really kind of strikes you first when
- 5:13Speaker 1: you think of Ricky Henderson, and like I spouted off,
- 5:15Speaker 1: that's a lot of great records. He was one of
- 5:17Speaker 1: the Inner Circle Hall of Famers.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, there's there's so much to like about
- 5:22Speaker 2: about Ricky and and and so bad to see him
- 5:25Speaker 2: him gone way too soon. But you know, when you
- 5:28Speaker 2: think about Ricky, you know, I think about Ricky and
- 5:30Speaker 2: Oakland A's like that, that's who it is, and i'd
- 5:33Speaker 2: say the face of that franchise for many years with
- 5:36Speaker 2: regardless of the number of guys who went through there,
- 5:39Speaker 2: the Bash Brothers, things like that. And I find it
- 5:42Speaker 2: interesting that he paid played for the Oakland A's four
- 5:44Speaker 2: different times in his career, which I think is fascinating.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I'd like to see how many other players played for
- 5:50Speaker 2: what would say their their team, the team they came
- 5:53Speaker 2: up with four different times throughout the career. Uh left Oakland,
- 5:57Speaker 2: went to the Yankees, left it, went back to Oakland,
- 6:00Speaker 2: went to the Blue Jays, went back to Oakland, went
- 6:02Speaker 2: to the Padres Angels, went back to Oakland. Like just
- 6:05Speaker 2: he just kind of kept finding his way back to Oakland,
- 6:07Speaker 2: which is, you know, really who he was and who
- 6:10Speaker 2: I think of him as. And at the same time,
- 6:12Speaker 2: you you raddle off all those stats, it's just incredible
- 6:15Speaker 2: what he's able to do. And as you know, you
- 6:19Speaker 2: think about Ricky and speed, he wasn't just a speed guy.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I think that's what he gets he's known for. But
- 6:24Speaker 2: the fact that he was able to walk as much
- 6:25Speaker 2: as he was and get on base, the fact that
- 6:27Speaker 2: he he almost hit three hundred home runs in his career.
- 6:30Speaker 2: That's that's monumentals for any player. Three thousand hits, you know,
- 6:36Speaker 2: over a thousand RBI like man, the guy was just unbelievable.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And there's just so much more that we could probably
- 6:42Speaker 2: go into his stories about Ricky and everybody's covering him already,
- 6:46Speaker 2: so we won't go too much into that, but I
- 6:47Speaker 2: think we'll have some fun talking about his cards and
- 6:50Speaker 2: opportunities that we see to collect Ricky in the future here,
- 6:53Speaker 2: So looking forward to getting to that once we get
- 6:55Speaker 2: through our our news and notes.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Yes, I totally agree, and Ricky I think also it's
- 7:00Speaker 1: nice that we have Immaculate Grade now because you can
- 7:02Speaker 1: always remember them. He qualifies just about every day for
- 7:05Speaker 1: use in Immaculate Grade in one way or another, just
- 7:07Speaker 1: because he played for so many teams and set so
- 7:10Speaker 1: many records and was just in all time great. So,
- 7:13Speaker 1: like you said, we'll get into let's get into some
- 7:15Speaker 1: of those news and notes. And it was a busy
- 7:18Speaker 1: period of two weeks since we last talked. Lots of trades,
- 7:22Speaker 1: lots of signings, and the big one right off the
- 7:24Speaker 1: bat is Corbyn Burns coming off the board signing with
- 7:27Speaker 1: the Arizona Diamondbacks for a total of six years and
- 7:33Speaker 1: two hundred and ten million with there's lots of opt
- 7:36Speaker 1: outs and other kind of like trinkets within this entire contract,
- 7:40Speaker 1: as Boris made sure to set Corbin Burns up, and really,
- 7:44Speaker 1: for me, this feels a lot like that Zach Grienki
- 7:48Speaker 1: free agent deal that when he signed with Arizona and
- 7:51Speaker 1: you know, moved over there that I think the Diamondbacks
- 7:55Speaker 1: were a bit of like a dark horse here. I
- 7:57Speaker 1: didn't necessarily have them even needing rotation help coming into
- 8:00Speaker 1: this offseason, but this certainly helps them keep pace and
- 8:03Speaker 1: what's going to be I think the Anal West is
- 8:06Speaker 1: probably the most exciting division that we've got going now.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Everybody's competing except for the Rockies, and the Rockies are
- 8:12Speaker 1: always there for the funny factor, But on the Diamondbacks,
- 8:16Speaker 1: this should just really set them up beautifully in terms
- 8:19Speaker 1: of putting Corbyn Burns at the top of their rotation.
- 8:22Speaker 1: They now go six deep if you kind of count
- 8:25Speaker 1: Joinn Montgomery in there, and you know they've got players
- 8:28Speaker 1: coming through that system as well that we've liked over
- 8:30Speaker 1: the years, and so it's a really great pitching staff.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Really great rotation in terms of fantasy value. I don't
- 8:37Speaker 1: know if this actually kind of moves the needle one
- 8:40Speaker 1: way or the other in terms of where Burns was
- 8:42Speaker 1: being drafted as a top five starting pitcher, because Arizona's
- 8:46Speaker 1: a relatively neutral ish park, like it plays a little
- 8:50Speaker 1: hit heavy because of the outfield dimensions, but then because
- 8:54Speaker 1: of the humidor that they brought in there, it's allowed
- 8:57Speaker 1: the ball to play a little better. So I think
- 8:59Speaker 1: this is overall like a pretty nice landing spot if
- 9:02Speaker 1: you had taken Burns in any early drafts. But what
- 9:05Speaker 1: do you think, brew do you think that this is
- 9:07Speaker 1: can be a great spot for Burns to come back
- 9:10Speaker 1: and come back for another NLCY Young Award running. Yeah.
- 9:15Speaker 2: I mean, Burns has definitely trailed off over the last
- 9:19Speaker 2: few years from his absolutely dominant self in like twenty
- 9:21Speaker 2: twenty one, twenty two, but there's really nothing wrong with
- 9:25Speaker 2: where he landed. He's a more of a groundball pitcher,
- 9:27Speaker 2: so that's good news for him. You know, Arizona's not
- 9:30Speaker 2: the easiest place to pitch ins, you know, one of
- 9:32Speaker 2: the top five or six worst parks to pitchins. So
- 9:36Speaker 2: there's a lot of other places that we may have
- 9:38Speaker 2: liked to see him ultimately land, but he's gonna get
- 9:40Speaker 2: the run sport there as well, So maybe it's a
- 9:43Speaker 2: you know, minum mid school tick down from other spots,
- 9:47Speaker 2: but overall, I think it's a good spot for him.
- 9:50Speaker 2: It's a win. You know, you have a certain team
- 9:52Speaker 2: now of where he's gonna be, and there's if you
- 9:54Speaker 2: look at kind of pitcheons coach staffs, there's a great
- 10:00Speaker 2: pitching coach staff there as well, and always getting the
- 10:03Speaker 2: most out of out of the pictures. So you have
- 10:05Speaker 2: to kind of like how all those things are lined
- 10:07Speaker 2: up for Burns. I think the biggest thing that I'm
- 10:09Speaker 2: struggling with this one is I was really excited to
- 10:11Speaker 2: see Ryan Nelson and what he was gonna do this year,
- 10:15Speaker 2: and like you called out that they're six starters, Jordan Montgomery,
- 10:19Speaker 2: I would probably argue with you on that one, and
- 10:22Speaker 2: this is Ryan Nelson. But either way, Ryan Nelson's not
- 10:26Speaker 2: gonna be stiff in the rotation anytime soon with Burns, Gallon, Kelly,
- 10:31Speaker 2: Edward Rudriguez, and Brandon Fatt in there. And even that
- 10:35Speaker 2: got Brandon Fatt, who I think has a lot of potential.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Montgomery they still probably want to get their money's worth
- 10:40Speaker 2: out out of him as well. So they're a deep
- 10:43Speaker 2: team and I think that's gonna be excited to see
- 10:45Speaker 2: as they're trying to make their way into that in
- 10:48Speaker 2: that division, because man, Dodgers, we know are gonna be tough,
- 10:52Speaker 2: Podgers are gonna be good giants. They're gonna do their
- 10:54Speaker 2: giants thing or they do whatever. We can't tell sometimes
- 10:58Speaker 2: how good they're gonna be or not. And then Rockies
- 11:00Speaker 2: a Rocky that's fine. So it's gonna be fun to watch.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gonna be quite the race. And good luck
- 11:05Speaker 1: Michaelias trying to build a rotation now at this point
- 11:08Speaker 1: because the Baltimore Orioles are in deep trouble.
- 11:11Speaker 2: I think that Jack Flair to here you go.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Yeah, unless they can bring in Sasaki. Although there was
- 11:17Speaker 1: a tweet today that it's a pretty much the big
- 11:19Speaker 1: guys that are left for Sasaki in terms of Dodgers, Yankees,
- 11:24Speaker 1: Red Sox, Cubs, Podreys. I think was what the finalist was,
- 11:28Speaker 1: maybe Mariners. I don't fully recall it. I just remember
- 11:31Speaker 1: that they did finally rule out the White Sox, which
- 11:34Speaker 1: Rookie Sasaki probably did very early on. But that was
- 11:37Speaker 1: probably a fun carrot to hang in front of Chris Gatz.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I know it something news were covered today, but I
- 11:41Speaker 2: thought it was really interesting that I was reading Sasaki
- 11:44Speaker 2: the twenty teams then proposals, like what were those other
- 11:47Speaker 2: ten teams doing? You could have at least have the
- 11:49Speaker 2: Intern put together proposal. I know it was a long shot,
- 11:52Speaker 2: but at least give it a good college try type
- 11:55Speaker 2: of thing. You know, you we was gonna happen, but like,
- 11:59Speaker 2: how would you if he went inside with the white
- 12:01Speaker 2: socks and you're sitting there, you know, over in Cincinnati
- 12:03Speaker 2: and you didn't put in the little white paper type
- 12:06Speaker 2: of thing, and you're like what, So he.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Apparently was opened everywhere. If the White Sox got a
- 12:12Speaker 1: meeting at all period, Yes, exactly. Well, yeah, you alluded
- 12:17Speaker 1: to the La Dodgers being another behemoth here in twenty
- 12:21Speaker 1: twenty five, and they have re ups with ta Oskar
- 12:25Speaker 1: Harnandez the outfielder since we last talked, as he's coming
- 12:29Speaker 1: in on a sixty six million dollar deal for three years. Again,
- 12:34Speaker 1: lots of wonky mechanics here in terms of an upfront
- 12:38Speaker 1: bonus and deferred payments because of course it's the Dodgers
- 12:41Speaker 1: that they've got to kick a lot of these payments
- 12:43Speaker 1: down the road. But ta Oskar's coming back to the
- 12:47Speaker 1: Dodgers after turning in a season with a one thirty
- 12:50Speaker 1: four WRC plus where he slashed two seventy two three
- 12:54Speaker 1: point thirty nine five oh one, thirty three bombs, eighty
- 12:58Speaker 1: four runs, nine rpi, twelve stone bases. Brew any reason
- 13:03Speaker 1: I shouldn't just copy that line and throw it right
- 13:06Speaker 1: into my projections for twenty twenty five, Yeah.
- 13:09Speaker 2: I would. I'd say I'm gonna throw slight, cold water
- 13:12Speaker 2: and tasker Hernandez, just because I always do. With tia Oscar.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I mean, he's got the risky strike ut rate. He
- 13:16Speaker 2: had a little bit more luck than usual last year.
- 13:19Speaker 2: The ball flew out a little bit more. So if
- 13:22Speaker 2: you want to pencil him for ninety percent of what
- 13:24Speaker 2: he did, I'm perfectly fine with it. But I think
- 13:26Speaker 2: that there's gonna be a little bit more of regression
- 13:28Speaker 2: because everything clicked, everything he hit the ball, well, he
- 13:32Speaker 2: got a little bit lucky, and he played on the
- 13:34Speaker 2: Dodgers like everything just worked. And let's expect a little
- 13:37Speaker 2: bit of regression there. And like I said, pencil Van
- 13:41Speaker 2: for ninety percent of that. I think we're happy he's
- 13:43Speaker 2: nineteenth off the board right now, and I expect that
- 13:46Speaker 2: to kind of jump up, and it could go up
- 13:48Speaker 2: a little bit. I would be opposed to taking him
- 13:51Speaker 2: above Lawrence Butler, who's going right in front of him.
- 13:54Speaker 2: I wouldn't be opposed to take him in front of
- 13:58Speaker 2: Brenton Doyle's, say s Zukulu's Robert who are going right
- 14:01Speaker 2: behind him. So I think he's probably kind of in
- 14:03Speaker 2: the right ballgame, But I don't want to talk about
- 14:07Speaker 2: him in front of James Wood or Jackson Merrill or
- 14:10Speaker 2: anybody like that that's a little bit above him has
- 14:13Speaker 2: some of that potential speed and upside. So I think
- 14:17Speaker 2: you can pencil amm, maybe put a little regression in there,
- 14:20Speaker 2: and move on with life, like that's probably what it is.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Just hope the strikeouts stay in check.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Well, that means you just pretty much perfectly described his
- 14:28Speaker 1: steamer line with thirty homers, mid eighties runs, mid nineties
- 14:32Speaker 1: RBI like eight to nine storm bases upper two fifties average, right,
- 14:37Speaker 1: So like, yeah, that is I think you can set
- 14:40Speaker 1: it and forget it. Taoscar is who he is, and
- 14:42Speaker 1: even some of that luck in terms of you might
- 14:44Speaker 1: see those inflated babeps over the past few years, but
- 14:47Speaker 1: this is a dude who scorches the ball. He's got
- 14:49Speaker 1: pretty good wheels that I think ta Oscar is who
- 14:53Speaker 1: he is until like you see some sort of injury
- 14:55Speaker 1: or any sort of like really skills degradation, but it
- 14:59Speaker 1: hasn't shown yet. So I think he's right in kind
- 15:01Speaker 1: of the the prime of his like veteran status, a
- 15:05Speaker 1: great landing spot in terms of where he was at
- 15:07Speaker 1: in those draft names. I think that's right where Taoscar
- 15:10Speaker 1: should be and will be all draft season.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Yeah, so probably the best news for him of just
- 15:15Speaker 2: going back home.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Yeah exactly. No in no worries about having to like
- 15:19Speaker 1: re learn new setups and kind of daily routines. I
- 15:23Speaker 1: like that for somebody routine returning. And we've got another
- 15:27Speaker 1: returner here, and that is Sean Mania re signing with
- 15:30Speaker 1: the Mets. He's getting three years, seventy five million, again,
- 15:35Speaker 1: deferred money, bonuses, all sorts of stuff set up. But again,
- 15:40Speaker 1: I think this is another situation where I'm going to ask,
- 15:43Speaker 1: like the same question where Mania's coming off a season
- 15:46Speaker 1: where he put up one hundred and eighty one and
- 15:49Speaker 1: two thirds innings with a three forty seven ear array,
- 15:52Speaker 1: a three eighty three FIP twelve and six record. He
- 15:57Speaker 1: also struck out nine point one per nine, so that
- 16:01Speaker 1: came it for one hundred and eighty four strikeouts. Any
- 16:04Speaker 1: reason we can't just kind of pencil it in, Sean
- 16:06Speaker 1: and I have for that line all over again.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that there's you can. I think he
- 16:14Speaker 2: strode a little bit more in the second half. Like
- 16:15Speaker 2: the overall numbers looked pretty much identical, but underline there
- 16:20Speaker 2: was a little bit of question for him. It seemed
- 16:24Speaker 2: like he wore down because this is not a guy
- 16:26Speaker 2: that's had a really full season workload in about two years,
- 16:31Speaker 2: and so I think, yeah, that was kind of maybe
- 16:33Speaker 2: a little bit of drawback. Got a little lucky in
- 16:35Speaker 2: the left on base department, a little lucky in the
- 16:38Speaker 2: babit department. So I see a little bit of regression here,
- 16:42Speaker 2: you know. And if you look at some of his numbers,
- 16:44Speaker 2: his ex FIP, his his XCRA, they're all about called
- 16:49Speaker 2: a half point worse than what he actually achieved, and
- 16:53Speaker 2: I think that's probably about right. And so if you
- 16:55Speaker 2: want to use the ninety percent again on media, they
- 16:58Speaker 2: just using taskar. I don't know how you do that
- 17:00Speaker 2: on a picture. Maybe you multiply by one point one
- 17:03Speaker 2: like for the Era and Whip. So I think I
- 17:06Speaker 2: maybe pull Manaya back. But if you look at the
- 17:09Speaker 2: ADP and I looked at earlier today, so I can't
- 17:11Speaker 2: remember off the top of my head, but it's about right,
- 17:14Speaker 2: Like that's baked in. I think he's he's going, I
- 17:17Speaker 2: want to say, around like the thirty to forty range
- 17:19Speaker 2: and starting pictures, which feels probably about right. So yeah,
- 17:23Speaker 2: I'm a little I have a little trepidation if somebody's like, yes,
- 17:25Speaker 2: pencil perfectly in, I'm probably not gonna own him. But
- 17:29Speaker 2: I do think that he's gonna be a solid, steady,
- 17:33Speaker 2: eddy middle of you know, the rotation type of guy
- 17:36Speaker 2: that you'll be happy to have on your team.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think I'm a little bit rosier
- 17:41Speaker 1: on him, and obviously I was last year too, which
- 17:44Speaker 1: led to a lot of ownership shares, which is tainting
- 17:47Speaker 1: my view, I think a little bit because I'm really
- 17:49Speaker 1: boded on him. But that second half, the strikeout rate
- 17:53Speaker 1: increased because he like started using that new slot famously
- 17:56Speaker 1: and kind of started coming a little bit more from
- 17:59Speaker 1: that Chris Angle led to a little more success, And
- 18:04Speaker 1: I mean, I think that just kind of shows that
- 18:06Speaker 1: Manaia's got the ability to kind of reinvent himself into
- 18:11Speaker 1: like the veteran status. You know, he's going to be
- 18:14Speaker 1: turning thirty three on February first, So that's what you
- 18:19Speaker 1: like to see, is like the ability to dynamically change.
- 18:22Speaker 1: And I think given that situation that ballpark in New York,
- 18:26Speaker 1: it doesn't work out any better than that for Anaya.
- 18:29Speaker 1: I think that's a lot of like what driven drove
- 18:32Speaker 1: some of those lower babbyops and just overall better left
- 18:36Speaker 1: on base rates and things like that. But he's coming
- 18:39Speaker 1: right back to City Field again. It plays cold, it's cavernous,
- 18:44Speaker 1: and I really like that matchup. So I mean, I
- 18:46Speaker 1: think I'll probably end up with some shares of Manaia.
- 18:50Speaker 1: But like the break, the best piece about him last
- 18:53Speaker 1: year was that he was absolutely free at the draft table. Now,
- 18:58Speaker 1: I mean, I think I would draft him as like
- 19:00Speaker 1: my number if I was really like just things had
- 19:06Speaker 1: not gone my way in terms of starting pitching in
- 19:07Speaker 1: a draft, I could maybe make him my number two,
- 19:10Speaker 1: just because I think you can set one hundred and
- 19:14Speaker 1: eighty innings from when I am more than you can
- 19:17Speaker 1: just about anybody else in the league anymore. That like,
- 19:19Speaker 1: the volume is there, So like, even if the strikeout
- 19:22Speaker 1: rate isn't quite as great as some other number two
- 19:24Speaker 1: pitchers for fantasy, the volume will be there. And I mean,
- 19:28Speaker 1: I think I'd rather have him as my number three
- 19:31Speaker 1: starter on a fantasy staff. But I just I think
- 19:35Speaker 1: he's a solid, solid option right now.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Yeah, there's nothing wrong with it, and it's it's always
- 19:41Speaker 2: good to see a guy go back to where they
- 19:43Speaker 2: bound success because you know that that's what was working
- 19:46Speaker 2: for him. And so if he was to have jumped
- 19:48Speaker 2: from New York from the Mets to the Yankees, like oh,
- 19:51Speaker 2: a little questionable, I'm scared of it. I think of
- 19:54Speaker 2: enough confidence that most of what he's done will will stick.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I think you got a little that rosy drunk a
- 20:00Speaker 2: little too much of the Manaya koul aid last year. So
- 20:03Speaker 2: we'll see. I think you'll we played twoey leagues together,
- 20:05Speaker 2: you'll probably have most of the shares if we're both
- 20:08Speaker 2: at the draft table there.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Yeah, well, here's the guy that I think you'll have
- 20:12Speaker 1: most of the shares of it is another pitcher signing.
- 20:14Speaker 1: We have Walker Buehler going to the Boston Red Sox
- 20:17Speaker 1: on a one year deal of over just twenty one
- 20:20Speaker 1: million bucks. Does have a mutual option for the second year,
- 20:23Speaker 1: but mutual options pretty much never get picked up. Now.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Buehler is coming off of what was a tough regular
- 20:30Speaker 1: season seventy five and one third innings with a five
- 20:34Speaker 1: thirty eight RA strikeout rate that was only eighteen point
- 20:40Speaker 1: six percent K minus BB of ten and a half percent.
- 20:45Speaker 1: But then in the playoffs he looked like vintage Walker
- 20:47Speaker 1: Bieler back when you know in twenty twenty one, when
- 20:50Speaker 1: he put up a two forty seven ERA over two
- 20:53Speaker 1: hundred and seven and two thirds innings, that feels like
- 20:55Speaker 1: a bygone here, especially coming off of the COVID year.
- 20:58Speaker 1: That's insane that Buehler did. That might also be why
- 21:02Speaker 1: he blew out his elbow the next year. But Buehler,
- 21:06Speaker 1: I think, is gonna be an enigma until we see
- 21:09Speaker 1: him back in spring training, see what he looks like
- 21:12Speaker 1: in uniform, because you could tell in the playoffs he
- 21:15Speaker 1: left everything he could on the table to be able
- 21:17Speaker 1: to gut it out for the Dodgers and not only
- 21:21Speaker 1: win that World Series, but also inter free agency on
- 21:24Speaker 1: a high note. So, what type of Walker Bueler do
- 21:28Speaker 1: you think we see showing up in Boston for twenty
- 21:31Speaker 1: twenty five. Is it something more akin to what his
- 21:34Speaker 1: twenty twenty four regular season performance was, something back to
- 21:38Speaker 1: the vintage of the twenty one Walker Bueler we saw
- 21:40Speaker 1: in the playoffs, or something in between.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you gave me each of a softball
- 21:46Speaker 2: question there. It's clearly something in between. But I think
- 21:50Speaker 2: it's one of those you got, you know, coming back
- 21:52Speaker 2: off the off the surgery, and some guys bounce back
- 21:55Speaker 2: right away, some guys take time. And Walker Bueler, I know,
- 21:59Speaker 2: he's not like a spring chicken here. He's not the
- 22:02Speaker 2: you know, young but he's still in baseball terms, at thirty,
- 22:06Speaker 2: is still relatively in the you know, in his prime
- 22:09Speaker 2: able to do things. So I do think he's gonna
- 22:11Speaker 2: bounce back. You know, the controls always like the last
- 22:15Speaker 2: thing to come. The velocity's relatively been there, maybe slightly down,
- 22:20Speaker 2: was building up last year. He was about ninety five,
- 22:23Speaker 2: and a few years prior when he was looking pretty
- 22:27Speaker 2: gotchart good. It was the mid ninety five's we'd like
- 22:30Speaker 2: to see him back in the ninety six as before,
- 22:33Speaker 2: but that might again a good good the healthy offseason
- 22:35Speaker 2: might be able to get him there. But the control
- 22:38Speaker 2: was the issue, that was what was the problem. He
- 22:40Speaker 2: gave up one more walk per nine than basically his
- 22:43Speaker 2: entire career, and that's what but that's what was biting him,
- 22:47Speaker 2: is he could not get out of those situations because
- 22:50Speaker 2: he's putting guys on and that will kill you. So
- 22:55Speaker 2: I think that comes back. I think he's comes back
- 22:57Speaker 2: a little healthier, a little stronger. I do not like
- 23:00Speaker 2: the move to finway. That is not gonna be ideal
- 23:03Speaker 2: for for for him. You know, again, he does keep
- 23:07Speaker 2: the ball on the ground, but he also gives up
- 23:09Speaker 2: a decent amount of homers for the how when the
- 23:11Speaker 2: ball does get in there, which is gonna be a challenge.
- 23:13Speaker 2: So I like Buehlers of flyer here and you don't
- 23:18Speaker 2: have anythy shock and hearing that from me, because that's
- 23:20Speaker 2: just kind of how I roll with this kind of guy,
- 23:23Speaker 2: because he he has exhibited the kind of profile that
- 23:25Speaker 2: I absolutely love when he's healthy. And the price right
- 23:28Speaker 2: here is really unbelievable. If he asked me at this
- 23:31Speaker 2: point in time because he is going to be fully healthy.
- 23:33Speaker 2: The Red Sox, you know, paid him a pretty handsome sum,
- 23:38Speaker 2: and they wouldn't have done that if they didn't think
- 23:39Speaker 2: he was going to be fully healthy. You have to
- 23:42Speaker 2: believe they did their due diligence, and so, you know,
- 23:45Speaker 2: let's just pencil in for one hundred and fifty eight
- 23:47Speaker 2: means called up a strikeout per nine, call it, you know,
- 23:52Speaker 2: two and a half to three walks per nine, called
- 23:54Speaker 2: a three seven five to three nine, five era and
- 23:59Speaker 2: thirteen wins something like that. I probably should be looking
- 24:01Speaker 2: at the Steamer projections as I say this, but I'm not.
- 24:05Speaker 2: I know you probably are, and I'm still shocked to
- 24:09Speaker 2: see where he's going off the board. Have you looked
- 24:12Speaker 2: to see his ADP at this point in time just
- 24:14Speaker 2: I'm looking at just like December ADP.
- 24:17Speaker 1: No, I haven't. But I think it's also being driven
- 24:20Speaker 1: off of that Steamer projection, because if you just use
- 24:23Speaker 1: the raw Steamer projection, it's essentially a carbon copy of
- 24:27Speaker 1: the twenty twenty four season rate stats, which obviously is
- 24:31Speaker 1: built upon Like how his pitches looked a lot that
- 24:35Speaker 1: I think projection systems are really starting to integrate pitch
- 24:40Speaker 1: shape data and like stuff plus and things like that
- 24:43Speaker 1: more so than they have the past couple of years.
- 24:46Speaker 1: And so I think that's what Steamer is looking at
- 24:48Speaker 1: here for Walker Dealer. But at the same time we
- 24:52Speaker 1: know that that isn't what he showed because that was
- 24:55Speaker 1: the regular season data we saw in the postseason where
- 24:58Speaker 1: he was able to bump it up a little bit
- 24:59Speaker 1: more Gray's. I think Gray has his projection in on
- 25:02Speaker 1: our site where he would be like an eleven dollars
- 25:05Speaker 1: pitcher the steamer the straight steamer is like a negative
- 25:08Speaker 1: ten dollars pitcher and a twelve team that. But I
- 25:11Speaker 1: think Gray's maybe a little rosie here where he's got
- 25:14Speaker 1: a three forty seven array one one three whip nine
- 25:18Speaker 1: point two K nine. So write what you were saying,
- 25:19Speaker 1: but he only has nine wins. So once you taggle
- 25:22Speaker 1: what you were saying with the array with what you
- 25:24Speaker 1: were saying for maybe more wins. Honestly, you probably got
- 25:27Speaker 1: Walker Bieler right around the same spot of being like
- 25:30Speaker 1: an eight to ten dollars pitcher.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Yep, that's kind of where I see him, and it
- 25:35Speaker 2: is ADP right now. I'm going off, like I say,
- 25:38Speaker 2: in BC data for December has with a ninety eighth
- 25:42Speaker 2: pitcher off the board.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Got jeez, so like a one dollar pitcher.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Yeah, he's going right between Nicolodolo and Carlos Estevaz And uh,
- 25:51Speaker 2: I'm personally a little Dola guy, so I'm a little
- 25:53Speaker 2: insulted by that. But let's you look up and like
- 25:57Speaker 2: the rodel Blanco Gavin Williams cutter across for Michael Waka
- 26:01Speaker 2: type area, Like you're talking about guys that you're looking
- 26:05Speaker 2: at talking about floor versus ceiling here and Buehler's got
- 26:09Speaker 2: ceiling potential. Most of those type of guys are you're
- 26:12Speaker 2: talking about, you're hoping for a high floor, get what
- 26:15Speaker 2: you're get what you're after, and it just becomes dart
- 26:18Speaker 2: throws from there, like this is where Brian bell Bellow goes,
- 26:22Speaker 2: This is where Nester Cortes goes, is where Chucks and
- 26:24Speaker 2: Job goes. Merrill Kelly like those types of guys where
- 26:27Speaker 2: you're just looking for innings or you're looking for shot
- 26:29Speaker 2: in the dark. And I feel like Blue Mueller's better
- 26:32Speaker 2: than a shot in the dark. And yeah, you're not
- 26:35Speaker 2: building your rotation around him. And if you build risky rotation.
- 26:37Speaker 2: You probably don't need him, but I don't want him.
- 26:40Speaker 2: But if you've got some guys that you trust, some
- 26:43Speaker 2: of those innings eaters early in the draft, and you're
- 26:45Speaker 2: able to rely on them, and you're hoping for the
- 26:48Speaker 2: upside of Bueler and know that if you know he
- 26:51Speaker 2: doesn't remain healthier if they baby him a little bit,
- 26:53Speaker 2: you can withstand that. I really like him. I really
- 26:56Speaker 2: like him. So again, you weren't shocked by that analysis
- 26:59Speaker 2: because you a tool.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean this is going to be somebody
- 27:03Speaker 1: who I think his draft stock is going to rise
- 27:06Speaker 1: very quickly throughout draft season, especially if you're using an
- 27:10Speaker 1: auction calculator that's just running off a steamer right now,
- 27:13Speaker 1: that's not kicking out a great value for Bueler that
- 27:16Speaker 1: you would have to manually adjust that within your auction calculator.
- 27:20Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean, based on what you said, I
- 27:22Speaker 1: think makes a really great target for like a number
- 27:25Speaker 1: three starter where I mean, honestly, pair is great with
- 27:29Speaker 1: like a Corbyn Burn Sean Maniya guys where you got
- 27:32Speaker 1: a little bit more veteran floor and just steadiness that like,
- 27:36Speaker 1: if you're looking for a number three that could turn
- 27:39Speaker 1: into a one or two, but could also totally bottom out.
- 27:44Speaker 1: I think Walker Bueler is kind of in that realm
- 27:46Speaker 1: because going to the Ale East is not going to
- 27:48Speaker 1: be easy I think for him in terms of like
- 27:51Speaker 1: just one coast to the other, totally different media environment
- 27:56Speaker 1: and pitching and Fenway that it could really you can
- 27:58Speaker 1: see where this can get sideways really fast. So like,
- 28:02Speaker 1: certainly I'm not investing huge draft capital into Walker Bueler,
- 28:06Speaker 1: but yeah, if I can pick him up at like
- 28:07Speaker 1: a eight to ten dollars value in drafts roughly, then yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 1: I think that's great.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think you'll be able to at least
- 28:14Speaker 2: early in the off season and as spring training goes along.
- 28:18Speaker 2: If I Velocity is showing anything with a ninety six
- 28:21Speaker 2: like for an average, I would be absolutely thrilled even
- 28:24Speaker 2: of the ninety five as spring training if he's if
- 28:27Speaker 2: he's bringing it at that, I'm gonna be really really
- 28:30Speaker 2: excited to see Walker Bueler.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay, Well, the next set of news we have
- 28:35Speaker 1: is pretty much half the league like moved around first
- 28:39Speaker 1: baseman in the past two weeks since we've talked that
- 28:42Speaker 1: it's been chaotic to even try to keep up with it.
- 28:44Speaker 1: So I'm just gonna rattle through all the movement and
- 28:47Speaker 1: then I'm gonna toss it back to you for you
- 28:50Speaker 1: know what of these moves maybe intrigues you the most,
- 28:53Speaker 1: kind of like strikes your fancy as you know, somebody
- 28:55Speaker 1: who has a significant up arrow or a down arrow
- 28:57Speaker 1: in their fancy value. And then we'll just kind of
- 28:59Speaker 1: pick a few of the other transactions that maybe kind
- 29:02Speaker 1: of like are a little bit more interesting than any
- 29:05Speaker 1: of the others. So here's all the first basement movement
- 29:08Speaker 1: we've had in the past two weeks. We have the
- 29:11Speaker 1: Houston Astros signing Christian Walker to be their first baseman,
- 29:15Speaker 1: and that would a deal that came in at three year,
- 29:20Speaker 1: sixty million dollars. Then we had the d Backs to
- 29:23Speaker 1: replace Christian Walker, went out and traded Slaate Socni for
- 29:27Speaker 1: Josh Naylor. So Naylor comes over from Cleveland slots right
- 29:31Speaker 1: into the first base spot for Arizona. Then we had
- 29:36Speaker 1: Paul Goldschmidt, former Arizona team back, sign with the Yankees
- 29:41Speaker 1: on a one year, twelve and a half million dollar deal.
- 29:44Speaker 1: The Guardians needed a first baseman through all this, because
- 29:47Speaker 1: you know what, Kyle Manzardo not good enough. You know what.
- 29:50Speaker 1: They also needed switch hitting veteran Carlos at Tana coming back,
- 29:54Speaker 1: which is actually I heard a funny anecdote that like
- 29:58Speaker 1: just a few days before the Santa and I had
- 30:00Speaker 1: like a home in Cleveland for a long time, because
- 30:03Speaker 1: you know, he's been there a couple of times. Finally
- 30:05Speaker 1: sold it, then re signed with Cleveland. So now has
- 30:09Speaker 1: to find new housing in the Cleveland area. Good luck
- 30:11Speaker 1: with that, Carlos Santana. Gio Urshela is moving over to
- 30:15Speaker 1: the A's where it looks like he's probably gonna have
- 30:18Speaker 1: like a full time role every day with the Athletics
- 30:21Speaker 1: in that new minor league ballpark. Washington actually saw all
- 30:26Speaker 1: this action going on and was like, you know what,
- 30:29Speaker 1: we don't want one first basement, we want two first basements.
- 30:32Speaker 1: So they went over to the Rangers, traded left handed
- 30:36Speaker 1: reliever Robert Garcia to the Rangers for Nathaniel Lowe. Then
- 30:40Speaker 1: also went out and signed Josh Bell, bringing him back
- 30:44Speaker 1: after he was there a few years ago. So let
- 30:47Speaker 1: me check roster resource. I think there should be enough
- 30:50Speaker 1: space for both of those guys. Yeah, so one should
- 30:52Speaker 1: play first base, one should DH and they should flop
- 30:55Speaker 1: back and forth. So we have Christian Walker, Josh Naylor,
- 31:00Speaker 1: gold Schmid, Carlos Santana, Geo Rochella, Nathaniel Lowe, and Josh Bell.
- 31:06Speaker 1: That seven first basemen that we're on the move in
- 31:08Speaker 1: the past two weeks. Which of these is the most
- 31:11Speaker 1: intriguing to you group?
- 31:13Speaker 2: Yeah, if I have to pick out one, and you
- 31:16Speaker 2: know me, I never can, but I'm going to try.
- 31:19Speaker 2: It would be going right back to the beginning, which
- 31:21Speaker 2: is Christian Walker going to Houston. I think Christian Walker
- 31:24Speaker 2: going to Houston is just another of those Italian signs
- 31:28Speaker 2: that Houston's like, we know who we are and we
- 31:30Speaker 2: know what ballpark we play in, and we're just gonna
- 31:32Speaker 2: keep doing that. Christian Walker pulls the ball, He's gonna
- 31:35Speaker 2: use the short cropper boxes, no question about it. He
- 31:39Speaker 2: doesn't have like the Isaac Parid's kind of like symptomes
- 31:43Speaker 2: that extreme, and he also has a little bit more power,
- 31:46Speaker 2: so like boxes are not, it's probably gonna still fly
- 31:49Speaker 2: out of the ballpark, but he has that tendency and
- 31:53Speaker 2: that ballpark is gonna play very very well for him.
- 31:55Speaker 2: And coming leaving from Arizona, which I mean it was
- 31:58Speaker 2: a poke to get that ball out in Arizona for him,
- 32:02Speaker 2: and he did fantastic there. I'd argue the lineups, you know,
- 32:07Speaker 2: probably relatively neutral there. But I really do like this
- 32:11Speaker 2: from an overall ballpark perspective. I did feel that the
- 32:14Speaker 2: Diamondbacks never fully like invested in Christian Walker. I don't
- 32:18Speaker 2: know if that's true, Like you're actually more of a
- 32:20Speaker 2: Christian Walker guy than I am, but like it always
- 32:23Speaker 2: felt like he was never their guy, even though he
- 32:25Speaker 2: played like he should have been their guy. It was
- 32:28Speaker 2: always like, how like we might want a better first
- 32:31Speaker 2: baseman even though we have one that's hitting thirty five bombs,
- 32:34Speaker 2: hitting two fifty v and knocking in one hundred runs,
- 32:37Speaker 2: Like there's got to be a better option out there.
- 32:39Speaker 2: It always felt like that's how he's treating in Arizona.
- 32:42Speaker 2: So I like this move to Houston for Christian Walker.
- 32:45Speaker 2: And so if I have to pick the one, that's
- 32:47Speaker 2: where it's at, and I'm gonna stop there before I
- 32:51Speaker 2: going to anybody else. So let you pick one that
- 32:53Speaker 2: you're excited about here.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Uh. For me, I mean, I think it's actually Goldie
- 32:59Speaker 1: going to New York just because it is a nice
- 33:02Speaker 1: landing spot. For him to make good on a one
- 33:04Speaker 1: year deal. He's got an inside out swing that I
- 33:07Speaker 1: think will play really well on Yankee Stadium that he
- 33:10Speaker 1: can kind of muscle balls to right field the way
- 33:13Speaker 1: that Aaron Judge does there. So I think that there's
- 33:15Speaker 1: there's a possibility you could see a bounce back for
- 33:18Speaker 1: Goldie where he refines some of that value and where
- 33:21Speaker 1: he was really struggling in twenty twenty four was honestly
- 33:24Speaker 1: keeping up with the fastball, which is not where you
- 33:26Speaker 1: want to be in his career, like at the end
- 33:29Speaker 1: of his career, because that pretty much pretends that it's
- 33:34Speaker 1: it's coming, that you know, the light at the end
- 33:36Speaker 1: of the tunnel is approaching quickly. But at a place
- 33:39Speaker 1: like Yankee Stadium where he doesn't have to worry about
- 33:41Speaker 1: ripping it down the line as much. I think it
- 33:44Speaker 1: allows Goldie to get out of his head a little bit.
- 33:46Speaker 1: You know, you could tell that in twenty four he
- 33:49Speaker 1: was cheating a lot to get to fastballs and just
- 33:51Speaker 1: threw off his entire approach. I think he's strong enough
- 33:55Speaker 1: that he doesn't need to do that if he keeps
- 33:58Speaker 1: his plate approach and can kind of maybe rEFInd any
- 34:01Speaker 1: of his groove that I don't know if I'm really
- 34:05Speaker 1: necessarily going to be investing heavily in Goldie, but especially
- 34:09Speaker 1: if you somehow miss out on all the first basemen
- 34:12Speaker 1: that go in my twelve teamer and you're one of
- 34:15Speaker 1: the last players to take a first baseman, I think
- 34:18Speaker 1: you can certainly do much worse than taking a flyer
- 34:22Speaker 1: on Goldie as like kind of your cheap end game
- 34:24Speaker 1: first baseman. So I like that landing spot for him.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Yeah. So I'm gonna read off some stats here I
- 34:32Speaker 2: want you to look at because I know you have
- 34:34Speaker 2: fangrafts off up right now, look at Goldie's twenty twenty
- 34:36Speaker 2: four line with Saint Louis, and I'm going to read
- 34:39Speaker 2: you another line of a player and tell me how
- 34:43Speaker 2: close you feel that these lines are. Okay, twenty two homers,
- 34:48Speaker 2: seventy three runs, sixty one ribies with a two forty
- 34:52Speaker 2: eight average, pretty much starting close to Goldie's line with
- 34:57Speaker 2: Saint Louis last.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Year, pretty much? Is I mean, Goldie tipped in stolen bases,
- 35:02Speaker 1: which is nice for first basement.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Okay, sorry, six stolen basements. I skipped that for this guy.
- 35:07Speaker 2: This is Anthony Rizzo before he went over to the Yankees,
- 35:11Speaker 2: and the next season with the Yankees, he added ten homers.
- 35:15Speaker 2: His RBA guys jumped up fourteen, his steals stayed the
- 35:19Speaker 2: same as runs stayed about the same as average dipped
- 35:21Speaker 2: a little bit. Uh. I think he got a little
- 35:24Speaker 2: little unlucky on that one and ten less games than
- 35:27Speaker 2: with the season before and the season before. I know
- 35:30Speaker 2: Hadress is gonna be a partial season between the Cubs
- 35:32Speaker 2: and the Yankees, But like that to me feels exactly
- 35:36Speaker 2: like what Goldsman. I know Goldman's a little older, but like,
- 35:39Speaker 2: is that not the same exact profile, the same exact
- 35:42Speaker 2: thing They're just trying to do again. And so if
- 35:44Speaker 2: you use that as your comparison, and I don't, I
- 35:47Speaker 2: feel like I'm in the ten percents game today for
- 35:50Speaker 2: some for whatever reason, add ten percent to Goldie or
- 35:53Speaker 2: maybe even twenty percent. And it's hard to argue that
- 35:56Speaker 2: because they've done it before, and he has gonna be
- 35:59Speaker 2: in a pretty good lineup position. I mean, the Cardinals
- 36:01Speaker 2: had a decent lineup position, but Ernando and using like Nolan,
- 36:06Speaker 2: Gorman slash Wilson controllers against Chisholm, Judge and Bellinger. I
- 36:14Speaker 2: gotta give it to the Yankees there from that line
- 36:16Speaker 2: of protection. And so yeah, I think you're right that
- 36:20Speaker 2: there's something to be to be said here. And I'm
- 36:23Speaker 2: not going out and investing in him, but I'm like,
- 36:26Speaker 2: he's sitting there for my corner infield. Sure, I'll take you.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Absolutely, I'm gonna take a lot of corner infield shots
- 36:32Speaker 1: on Goldie coming into this year. Oddly that you said
- 36:36Speaker 1: that with us in our our deep podcast, that we're
- 36:38Speaker 1: going to get off on some tangent with these first basemen.
- 36:41Speaker 1: The tangent I want to get off on is actually
- 36:45Speaker 1: the two pitchers that were in the trades I think
- 36:49Speaker 1: are the most interesting part of these movements. All this
- 36:52Speaker 1: first baseman, you know, shuffle between Robert Garcia is an
- 36:58Speaker 1: electric South pop moving in to a Texas Rangers bullpen
- 37:01Speaker 1: that does not have a closer right now. There was
- 37:04Speaker 1: lots of rumblings of Garcia, you know, maybe closing in
- 37:09Speaker 1: Washington late last year, especially as Finnigan was struggling and
- 37:13Speaker 1: was on the trade block, and then subsequently dfad like
- 37:17Speaker 1: not offered a contract at the tendering deadline, and so
- 37:23Speaker 1: he's got electric stuff and is gonna be one of
- 37:26Speaker 1: the go tos I think right now, I think the
- 37:29Speaker 1: Rangers probably end up bringing back Kirby Yates, but Yeats
- 37:32Speaker 1: is gonna be thirty eight, I believe, and you never
- 37:36Speaker 1: know where that can go. And then you have Slatson
- 37:39Speaker 1: Cony moving over to the Cleveland Guardians organization that is
- 37:43Speaker 1: just a pitching factory powerhouse. This is a guy who
- 37:46Speaker 1: had over a one hundred stuff plus and location plus
- 37:49Speaker 1: last year, and a lot of that was driven by
- 37:52Speaker 1: improvements on his cutter where he added a couple of
- 37:54Speaker 1: ticks to his cutter that he just couldn't quite figure
- 37:57Speaker 1: it out in Arizona. And I do wonder if there's
- 37:59Speaker 1: enough in that arsenal where Cleveland retools Slate secone that
- 38:05Speaker 1: he is in line to be like their sixth starter
- 38:08Speaker 1: right now, essentially you know there's only five set starters.
- 38:10Speaker 1: And then there's kind of a mix smash of like
- 38:13Speaker 1: Logan Allen and and others kind of in triple A
- 38:16Speaker 1: that I think Slay Seccony would come up before. And
- 38:19Speaker 1: so I want to get some of your insights there,
- 38:21Speaker 1: like do you think that you're taking any dart throws
- 38:24Speaker 1: on either of these guys, especially in like super Deep
- 38:27Speaker 1: like you know these autnew back end of your auto
- 38:30Speaker 1: nee roster or like a fifty round draft and hold
- 38:33Speaker 1: that any intrigue in.
- 38:34Speaker 2: These players, yeah, I think both points you make are
- 38:39Speaker 2: fair Cleveland. Any picture that they're interested in is interesting.
- 38:44Speaker 2: I don't know that I see enough in Slade's background.
- 38:48Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, let me just go jump after that.
- 38:51Speaker 2: But I think Arcia is really the one that is
- 38:54Speaker 2: a little more intriguing. And Russia resource has some actually
- 38:57Speaker 2: sharing the closer role with Jacob Webb, which I don't
- 39:01Speaker 2: really see necessarily. The web's got that on on Lockdown.
- 39:08Speaker 2: I think it's more of if if Yates comes back
- 39:10Speaker 2: or a clerk or makes his return or something like
- 39:14Speaker 2: that like that, I think those would be the guy
- 39:16Speaker 2: to stand up there. So I think Garcia has got,
- 39:18Speaker 2: you know, sneaky closer value, and you know, he doesn't
- 39:24Speaker 2: have a huge track record, but what he's done has
- 39:26Speaker 2: looked good and the numbers behind it seemed to back
- 39:29Speaker 2: it up, and so he's maybe just unlocked something, you know,
- 39:32Speaker 2: kind of as a late twenties guy that yeah, he's
- 39:35Speaker 2: found his spot in the bullpen. So let's let's let's
- 39:39Speaker 2: see what he does. And I think for your points, right,
- 39:42Speaker 2: like in a deeper league. I think Garcia is a
- 39:44Speaker 2: guy to target, especially in some of those kind of
- 39:46Speaker 2: dynasty formats stuff like that, because you're gonna get him
- 39:48Speaker 2: pretty cheap at the draft table. And if you're wrong,
- 39:51Speaker 2: oh well, if you're right, yeah you could. You could
- 39:54Speaker 2: take advantage of this for a few years. So I
- 39:56Speaker 2: think Garcia is intriguing here, and I think you make
- 39:59Speaker 2: a good call that he might be one of the
- 40:01Speaker 2: most interesting pieces of all these trades. I'm still saying
- 40:04Speaker 2: I like Christian Walker more interesting, but I'll give you
- 40:07Speaker 2: a kudos find the silver lining here. I was worried
- 40:11Speaker 2: you wouldn't talk about Josh Bell, so I'll give you.
- 40:14Speaker 1: That I was thinking about it. I'm always it's hard
- 40:19Speaker 1: to lay off of Josh Bell because the projections always
- 40:22Speaker 1: kick out way better than what he is and then
- 40:24Speaker 1: he goes on like a late season tears. It's a
- 40:27Speaker 1: classic Josh Bell like arc that I'm going to fall
- 40:31Speaker 1: forward again. I know, I am. It's like Charlie Brown
- 40:34Speaker 1: with the football.
- 40:36Speaker 2: At this point. Josh Bell's like forty five years old
- 40:38Speaker 2: doing the same thing every day, like I know he's not,
- 40:41Speaker 2: but that's what it feels like here's Josh Bell signing against.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Aund how long he has stuck around considering his just
- 40:49Speaker 1: kind of lack of a profile that it's I think
- 40:52Speaker 1: he's a great clubhouse guy too, which is really helping
- 40:54Speaker 1: Bell stick around the league. But the skills are are
- 40:59Speaker 1: very hit or miss.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, Okay.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Next transaction we have is Glaber tourist second baseman signing
- 41:06Speaker 1: a one year, fifteen million dollar deal with the Detroit Tigers,
- 41:10Speaker 1: which I think SAPs all of his fantasy value personally,
- 41:14Speaker 1: not a great landing spot that you know, a lot
- 41:16Speaker 1: of what kept Glabor afloat last year, even amongst a
- 41:21Speaker 1: really really tough year, you know, he still turned value
- 41:25Speaker 1: out for you in a twelve team league, certainly not
- 41:28Speaker 1: what you expected. But especially am I second base, it
- 41:31Speaker 1: doesn't take too much to be able to make sure
- 41:34Speaker 1: that you're actually churning out something positive. And it's two
- 41:37Speaker 1: fifty seven average with fifteen homers, eighty runs and sixty
- 41:41Speaker 1: three RBI. Just met that threshold. Especially, you know a
- 41:45Speaker 1: lot of that was buoyed by playing for the New
- 41:46Speaker 1: York Yankees, playing in Yankee Stadium. Now moving to the
- 41:50Speaker 1: Tigers with a much weaker offense in a park that
- 41:54Speaker 1: you know, stays in the forty degree range for the
- 41:58Speaker 1: first month of the season on top of it being
- 42:02Speaker 1: a super deep park. I have really no interest in
- 42:06Speaker 1: labor outside of just like literally, like a last second,
- 42:10Speaker 1: am I pick a one dollar sort of like situation.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Do you think that there is actually more value in
- 42:16Speaker 1: labor tours beyond that? Are you willing to invest anything
- 42:19Speaker 1: kind of maybe in the next tier or two up?
- 42:23Speaker 2: No? Okay, yeah, I mean this, this one's very very simple.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Like I I've never been a really big labor tours guy.
- 42:31Speaker 2: I think he's always had the Yankees tax booing him,
- 42:35Speaker 2: and he just couldn't really seem to put all the
- 42:39Speaker 2: pieces together unless he had exorbitant luck, which is kind
- 42:45Speaker 2: of what happens. Like you thought he was gonna run,
- 42:48Speaker 2: but he just ran a little. He thought in power,
- 42:50Speaker 2: but then it just didn't play. He thought he should
- 42:52Speaker 2: score more, but he didn't like it just didn't seem
- 42:55Speaker 2: to be playing. And then you put him into Detroit, man,
- 42:58Speaker 2: that power's gone. That that power is absolutely gone in
- 43:01Speaker 2: that ballpark. You know, he he hit the grand old
- 43:05Speaker 2: fifteen home runs last last year, and they do on
- 43:12Speaker 2: baseball Savant a no doubter percent of the home run.
- 43:16Speaker 2: So what's the percent of his no doubters? It was
- 43:20Speaker 2: six percent. Six percent were no doubters. Everything else was
- 43:24Speaker 2: just so, like, well, they do an adjustment, so the
- 43:27Speaker 2: adjustment should have been seventeen homers and things like that.
- 43:31Speaker 2: The math doesn't quite work work out because he actually
- 43:35Speaker 2: should have had a little bit. He had already like
- 43:42Speaker 2: five homers more than you should have, so they said
- 43:44Speaker 2: he should have had like twelve. Like the math is
- 43:46Speaker 2: kind of funny and how it works out. The funny
- 43:48Speaker 2: thing is, though, if you just go back to what
- 43:50Speaker 2: has adjusted, they said he should have had seventeen if
- 43:52Speaker 2: he's playing in the kind of neutral across the all
- 43:56Speaker 2: you know, neutral factors in Yankee Stadium, he had had
- 43:59Speaker 2: seven team in uh Detroit, nine.
- 44:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like, that's brutal.
- 44:06Speaker 2: That's brutal. Like you could expect that number. You can
- 44:08Speaker 2: expect labor tores to be having single digits home run,
- 44:12Speaker 2: single digits stolen bases and hoping to get sixty runs
- 44:17Speaker 2: and sixty RBIs while hitting maybe to forty two fifty.
- 44:22Speaker 2: That's not valuable at all.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Alright, Well, yeah, I think we're on the same sorry
- 44:28Speaker 1: net fancy here. No, you're you're, you're, you're preaching to
- 44:34Speaker 1: the choir here, because I think it's right there too
- 44:36Speaker 1: that it's not looking great for labor, and I think
- 44:38Speaker 1: it's pretty indicative that this is what he had to
- 44:41Speaker 1: settle with. It's not like, you know, he could have
- 44:44Speaker 1: found somewhere better with a better offensive environment that maybe
- 44:47Speaker 1: he wants to win a little bit, but this is
- 44:49Speaker 1: all Detroit's going to do in the off season. The
- 44:51Speaker 1: momentum is gonna be hard to keep going from the
- 44:54Speaker 1: season going into twenty five.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and I mean he's still going off to the
- 44:57Speaker 2: board his fifteenth second basement, which is which is scary,
- 45:01Speaker 2: Like he's in front of my kil Garcia Jackson, Holiday,
- 45:04Speaker 2: Zach Gayloff, Colt Keith like it's it's it's he's still
- 45:08Speaker 2: got the Yankee tax associated with him, that big Marcus.
- 45:12Speaker 2: So it's good, it's it's definitely interesting and it's very
- 45:15Speaker 2: telling the Yankees did not even offer him a contract.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I would totally agree. Okay, next transaction that we
- 45:22Speaker 1: have is the Phillies going out and trading for haz
- 45:25Speaker 1: us Lozardo. So they also acquired a minor league catcher
- 45:29Speaker 1: and sent out one of their top prospects, Starlinkaba for
- 45:33Speaker 1: Luzardo also sent over another outfield prospect. But Luzardo and
- 45:37Speaker 1: Cobble are really the big names here, and Hazus Lozardo
- 45:40Speaker 1: is coming off of a tough injury marred year in
- 45:43Speaker 1: term in terms of you know, put up only sixty
- 45:46Speaker 1: six and two thirds and twenty twenty four with a
- 45:49Speaker 1: five e haray on the dot even five era with
- 45:54Speaker 1: a one two five whip eight point three K nine,
- 45:58Speaker 1: and that was certainly a a huge step back from
- 46:01Speaker 1: what he put up in twenty twenty three. But I
- 46:03Speaker 1: do wonder if it was just too many innings on
- 46:06Speaker 1: such a fragile guy in twenty twenty three. We'll see
- 46:09Speaker 1: how the Phillies use Lozardo going forward. But where is
- 46:13Speaker 1: your interest level here? Because I think it is a
- 46:16Speaker 1: little bit like what we're seeing in Walker, where I
- 46:20Speaker 1: think the injury history is more significant for Luzardo and
- 46:23Speaker 1: he's struggled to stay on the mound much more than
- 46:27Speaker 1: Walker has over his career. But I think certainly similar
- 46:31Speaker 1: question marks. But do you see the same sort of
- 46:35Speaker 1: bounce back for Lozardo or do you see more of
- 46:37Speaker 1: kind of the same up and down performance just because
- 46:41Speaker 1: of that barking shoulder.
- 46:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I like your comparison to Bueler because it gives
- 46:47Speaker 2: us a good kind of starting point to bounce off of.
- 46:52Speaker 2: And I think Lozardo's got probably three strikes against and
- 46:55Speaker 2: the walker doesn't shoulder verse elbo Shoulder to me is
- 46:59Speaker 2: scarier than elbow, I would say, frequency of issue. Like,
- 47:04Speaker 2: I feel like Bueller's like, shame you know, fool me once,
- 47:07Speaker 2: shame on, Shame on you. Fuel pool me twice. In
- 47:10Speaker 2: my case, shame on you again. Uh, fool me three times,
- 47:13Speaker 2: shame on me. Like, I feel like that's where we're
- 47:14Speaker 2: at with Lozardo. It's not been one or two times.
- 47:17Speaker 2: It's been you know, three or four times that that
- 47:19Speaker 2: we've kind of been through this, and the skills before
- 47:23Speaker 2: the injuries weren't there long enough or as good, and
- 47:28Speaker 2: so Buehler like, if you actually just look at, like
- 47:31Speaker 2: the the rate stats, you could argue that Lozardo's looked
- 47:34Speaker 2: very similar to Buelers, but he was doing it across
- 47:36Speaker 2: fifty innings or ninety innings, things like that, and it
- 47:41Speaker 2: wasn't being sustained as much. And you've kind of started
- 47:44Speaker 2: to see the degradation a little bit more for for Lozardo,
- 47:48Speaker 2: So I'm I want to watch him. He's got all
- 47:51Speaker 2: the potential in the world. He's younger, you know, clear
- 47:54Speaker 2: the Philly Ce something I'm probably gonna be passing on Lozardo. Uh.
- 47:58Speaker 2: At most draft wards, I think that the risk is
- 48:00Speaker 2: just just too much that you're if you're baking the
- 48:04Speaker 2: guy to have one hundred innings or ninety or eighty,
- 48:06Speaker 2: which is I think where you have to put lose
- 48:07Speaker 2: Zarto despite his team of projections at one hundred and
- 48:10Speaker 2: sixty one, you have to look elsewhere for your rotation.
- 48:15Speaker 2: So maybe I'm a little too negative of lozarda there.
- 48:17Speaker 2: But my last year's resolution was don't draft injured guys,
- 48:22Speaker 2: and I'm just sticking too injured too many times.
- 48:26Speaker 1: Yeah, No, I think I'm in the same boat here
- 48:28Speaker 1: with you. On Lozardo. I've never been a huge fan
- 48:31Speaker 1: of him because of just that injury history. It's really
- 48:34Speaker 1: tough to count on him for much of anything, and
- 48:36Speaker 1: the price is always high on him given where the
- 48:41Speaker 1: talent came through in twenty twenty three. Also to kind
- 48:43Speaker 1: of like prove to people who have been to the
- 48:46Speaker 1: Lozardo camp forever that you know where his ceiling could
- 48:49Speaker 1: be and if not beyond that, and so I I
- 48:53Speaker 1: just can't I can't ever get in on the price
- 48:55Speaker 1: of Lizardo. You know, if it was where like Manaia
- 48:59Speaker 1: was last year in terms of like being free towards
- 49:01Speaker 1: the end of drafts, certainly I would end up with
- 49:04Speaker 1: much many more shares of him. But there's always seems
- 49:07Speaker 1: to be a believer to in every draft room that
- 49:09Speaker 1: sees that Luzardo, still relatively young, sees the electric fastball,
- 49:15Speaker 1: and this he's also he looks so great on the mound,
- 49:18Speaker 1: like the motion looks fluid, and he looks like a
- 49:22Speaker 1: star stud pitcher when he's going. But it can fall
- 49:26Speaker 1: apart pretty fast. So I think that certainly he's got
- 49:29Speaker 1: his uses out there, like if you've got a lot
- 49:32Speaker 1: of steady production in your first few starting pitching spots.
- 49:36Speaker 1: But just the way I know that you and I
- 49:39Speaker 1: draft and maybe even the rassbell ethos in general, in
- 49:42Speaker 1: terms of staying away from pitching, it doesn't happen very
- 49:45Speaker 1: often where it lines up for me to be able
- 49:47Speaker 1: to bring Lazardo onto a roster.
- 49:50Speaker 2: YEP, I think that's fair, so we won't be only
- 49:52Speaker 2: many shares, and we'll see if the ADP falls suit.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay, well we got two more signings in terms
- 49:58Speaker 1: of some I would say deeper league later round picks,
- 50:03Speaker 1: but I think these are more indicative of a little
- 50:05Speaker 1: bit of like that ethos we're talking about, that these
- 50:08Speaker 1: are the type of players you've kind of got to
- 50:10Speaker 1: pick up to be able to survive an entire six
- 50:13Speaker 1: months fantasy baseball season that goes forever and you're trying
- 50:17Speaker 1: to fill holes. We've got two signings, Like I said,
- 50:20Speaker 1: the first is Jack Peterson signing a one year deal
- 50:24Speaker 1: in Texas, and so he should line up to be
- 50:27Speaker 1: able to be there starting DH as you know, shipping
- 50:31Speaker 1: out Nathaniel Lowe help them free up the spot they
- 50:34Speaker 1: moved Jake Berger to first base. Peterson should walk in
- 50:38Speaker 1: as pretty much the everyday DH and especially strong side,
- 50:42Speaker 1: but I think he probably will get some looks at lefties,
- 50:46Speaker 1: just given the way that that Texas Rangers lineup is
- 50:50Speaker 1: kind of shaping up right now. The other left signing
- 50:54Speaker 1: we have is Andrew McCutchen signing in Pittsburgh again for
- 50:57Speaker 1: a one year deal, so coming back there, and I mean,
- 51:00Speaker 1: I think it's almost like a permanent deal that McCutchen
- 51:04Speaker 1: can come back to Pittsburgh as long as he wants.
- 51:08Speaker 1: But I call him out because, especially like in fifteen
- 51:11Speaker 1: team leagues, I'm thinking about you know, we got the
- 51:14Speaker 1: emails this week for NFBC drafts coming up, which is
- 51:18Speaker 1: a fifteen team five by five rodo format, and so
- 51:23Speaker 1: you know, last year around this time, we were talking
- 51:25Speaker 1: about Cutch being a great kind of fifth outfielder, bench piece.
- 51:29Speaker 1: He turned positive value in fifteen teamers, you know, with
- 51:33Speaker 1: last year's production. And Peterson even turned like double digit
- 51:39Speaker 1: like teams values with his twenty three homers, two seventy
- 51:42Speaker 1: five average, sixty two runs, sixty four rbi, and seven
- 51:46Speaker 1: stone bases. Let me look up Cutch's final line because
- 51:50Speaker 1: it was also relatively solid two thirty two average, twenty bombs,
- 51:54Speaker 1: sixty six runs, fifty run, fifty rbi, and three stone bases.
- 51:58Speaker 1: So I was expected a little more speed out of
- 52:01Speaker 1: Cutch last year, but still solid lines. So, uh, I mean,
- 52:05Speaker 1: I think you have to prefer Peterson just given the
- 52:08Speaker 1: overall power profile here, but uh, maybe you do prefer Cutch.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Was there anything maybe in his profile that you saw
- 52:15Speaker 1: that would make you prefer him over Jack Peterson going
- 52:18Speaker 1: into twenty twenty five or anything else that you have
- 52:21Speaker 1: to say about this kind of overall profile of like
- 52:24Speaker 1: back end outfielder that can be helpful going into drafts.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I'm giving cuts the Tommy fam treatment
- 52:32Speaker 2: this year or the Nelson Cruise treatment on which one
- 52:34Speaker 2: is which is? I like you, but you're getting up
- 52:37Speaker 2: there in age, and I'm not quite sure if it's
- 52:39Speaker 2: gonna last. Like I think that's where Cuch is at
- 52:41Speaker 2: this point. You know, there there's maybe some speed, maybe not.
- 52:45Speaker 2: There is some power maybe not. There's some average maybe not.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Like I'm not quite sure what I'm going to get,
- 52:49Speaker 2: but I don't mean to get enough that if I
- 52:51Speaker 2: have to plug him in, I'm not gonna be too
- 52:52Speaker 2: frustrated about it. But Peterson, on the other hand, like,
- 52:56Speaker 2: if I'm playing my matchups, I'm gonna be relatively happy.
- 53:00Speaker 2: I mean, he's a you know, against the lefties, he's
- 53:04Speaker 2: twenty five percent below league average. Against the right eas,
- 53:06Speaker 2: he's twenty five percent above league average. Like and he's uh,
- 53:10Speaker 2: and that actually tends to work against the strong side platoons.
- 53:13Speaker 2: So you know, you just have to know what you're
- 53:15Speaker 2: getting yourself into. So I'd much rather own Jack Peterson here.
- 53:19Speaker 2: I think he's got more upside. I think, you know, clearly,
- 53:23Speaker 2: being the younger guy, I have more faith that this
- 53:25Speaker 2: can continue for a few years. So I'll take Jock
- 53:28Speaker 2: Peterson probably any day of the week in this conversation.
- 53:31Speaker 2: But that's nothing against Andrew McCutcheon. I still still think
- 53:33Speaker 2: there's value there. I think is that back end. I'm
- 53:36Speaker 2: at the end of the draft. I feel like my
- 53:37Speaker 2: outfield is going to need some depth. That's a guy
- 53:40Speaker 2: that I don't have a problem throwing a dollar at
- 53:42Speaker 2: or a late draft pick at. And if I have
- 53:43Speaker 2: to move on, I'm moving on. I'm not I'm not
- 53:45Speaker 2: too disappointed at that either, So that to be harsh.
- 53:48Speaker 2: Andrew mccushon is a fantastic player and has been throughout
- 53:50Speaker 2: his career, but I think that's kind of slowly starting
- 53:53Speaker 2: to come to an end. So give me the give
- 53:55Speaker 2: me the young guy that likes to likes to mash.
- 53:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree, but I think both of them
- 54:00Speaker 1: will be viable, especially in fifteen teamers that yep, both
- 54:03Speaker 1: will be pretty free. I think at the draft table,
- 54:06Speaker 1: especially which you can get out of Jock like that
- 54:08Speaker 1: is found money the way that kind of like old
- 54:10Speaker 1: man JD. Martinez was that. I mean, Jock's not even
- 54:15Speaker 1: you know that old it's the scheme.
- 54:18Speaker 2: It's thirty two.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Yeah, he's thirty two. This is the type of guy
- 54:21Speaker 1: where he could have some sort of magical season a
- 54:25Speaker 1: la JD. Martinez or or Nelson Cruz where it all
- 54:28Speaker 1: clicks and he hits mid thirties bombs for absolutely free.
- 54:32Speaker 1: So I think it's a great investment spot. Okay, let's
- 54:36Speaker 1: get into a little bit of card news before we
- 54:39Speaker 1: take a break and come back with that Rickey Henderson PC.
- 54:41Speaker 1: So we have turned the corner here into twenty twenty five.
- 54:44Speaker 1: We surprisingly haven't seen the twenty twenty five design yet
- 54:48Speaker 1: for Top's flagship, but we should be having that relatively
- 54:51Speaker 1: soon because honestly, it's got to be rolling out the
- 54:54Speaker 1: doors to get on shelves in time for usually what's
- 54:58Speaker 1: like a beginning of the season in release, if not,
- 55:02Speaker 1: you know, late February. So at this point, you know,
- 55:05Speaker 1: we're usually we're about six to eight weeks out from
- 55:08Speaker 1: where Tops twenty five Series one flagship should be coming out,
- 55:12Speaker 1: So I would expect really any day that we get
- 55:15Speaker 1: the news of what that design is going to be.
- 55:17Speaker 1: I just really pray that it's not anything like twenty four,
- 55:20Speaker 1: because I certainly bought a lot less than twenty four
- 55:24Speaker 1: just because I was not a huge fan of the design.
- 55:26Speaker 1: We'll see which direction that goes in twenty five. But
- 55:30Speaker 1: major major news, Barry Bonds is coming back to tops
- 55:34Speaker 1: in terms of signing autographs. So he's been out of
- 55:37Speaker 1: the game for a long time. I want to say
- 55:40Speaker 1: the last time he was signing autographs it was usually
- 55:43Speaker 1: through Upper Deck products more than anything else, and it
- 55:46Speaker 1: really kind of stopped around the time of his reign
- 55:49Speaker 1: of terror, when he was just mashing seventy homers a
- 55:52Speaker 1: year in terms of like the early two thousands, and
- 55:56Speaker 1: hasn't been included since obviously with all of what surrounds
- 56:00Speaker 1: Berry Bonds. And then he's also kind of I'm a
- 56:03Speaker 1: mercucial person at the same time with just kind of
- 56:05Speaker 1: a prickly personality slash trying to guard himself against what
- 56:10Speaker 1: is out there in the general public. So I think
- 56:13Speaker 1: it's exciting to get Barry Bonds back into the twenty
- 56:16Speaker 1: twenty five sets certainly gonna nose dive any of the
- 56:20Speaker 1: value of the cards that people had hung onto because
- 56:23Speaker 1: the Barry Bonds autos were hot commodities in the market
- 56:26Speaker 1: just because he wasn't actively signing new cards. So Brew,
- 56:30Speaker 1: what are your thoughts on Barry Bonds returning to the
- 56:33Speaker 1: autograph game and going to be having autos in twenty
- 56:36Speaker 1: twenty five products.
- 56:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I think this is gonna be really interesting because
- 56:40Speaker 2: you know, Bonds for you know, all the talk of
- 56:44Speaker 2: the steroids and you know the records they count and
- 56:47Speaker 2: things like that. From a card collecting perspective, he's a
- 56:50Speaker 2: rarity because he doesn't have those autos out there. He
- 56:53Speaker 2: hasn't been a lot of sets. He hasn't been you know,
- 56:56Speaker 2: he hasn't been the King Griffy Junior kind of road
- 56:59Speaker 2: show that it seems like there's those out there everywhere.
- 57:02Speaker 2: So I think it's gonna be there's gonna be a
- 57:04Speaker 2: quite a bit of a chase after some of these
- 57:06Speaker 2: cards that Barry Bonds signs. I think it's great for
- 57:08Speaker 2: the hobby to see him coming back, and I think
- 57:11Speaker 2: he's actually you know, trying to come out a little
- 57:13Speaker 2: bit more from the shell and actually get a little
- 57:15Speaker 2: bit more into the collecting from a few things I've seen.
- 57:18Speaker 2: So I think it's exciting. I think it was pretty
- 57:20Speaker 2: big news that didn't get the notoriety that deserved. But
- 57:24Speaker 2: I think it'll be fun to see Barry Bonds back
- 57:26Speaker 2: signing Tops cards. And I think they're they're gonna be
- 57:30Speaker 2: a hot commodity, Hotter than some people think.
- 57:33Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think it'll be really fascinating to see
- 57:36Speaker 1: it just on a lot of the premium cards that
- 57:38Speaker 1: there were shades of it back in the early two thousands,
- 57:41Speaker 1: but certainly not what it's developed into in terms of
- 57:44Speaker 1: like Tops, Dynasty Tops, Transcendent, some of the bat knobs
- 57:48Speaker 1: and like Tier one and things like that that I
- 57:50Speaker 1: think we're gonna see a lot of really cool Barry
- 57:53Speaker 1: Bond's cards start coming out and hitting the market that
- 57:56Speaker 1: like we've been missing out on over the past decade
- 57:59Speaker 1: or two. So I think that's gonna be fun just
- 58:01Speaker 1: to see what comes out of the archives in terms
- 58:03Speaker 1: of memorabilia and patches and whatever else they've got for
- 58:07Speaker 1: Prairie Bonds. And it does look like he's signing both
- 58:10Speaker 1: like Pirates based and Giants based stuff, so it'll be
- 58:14Speaker 1: great for both of those kind of PC collections to
- 58:17Speaker 1: round it out, to get extra Pirates, Berry Bonds autos
- 58:21Speaker 1: in there, which probably are really limited, if not like
- 58:24Speaker 1: don't exist at all because of just the way card
- 58:27Speaker 1: collecting Peaked Post is signing with the Giants. So yeah,
- 58:33Speaker 1: I think it's gonna be great watching the market on
- 58:35Speaker 1: these cards, and I think it gonna be a huge
- 58:37Speaker 1: selling point of just the twenty twenty five sets in general,
- 58:41Speaker 1: because it sounds like not only will it be in
- 58:43Speaker 1: Flagship but also Pepper throughout all sorts of other products.
- 58:46Speaker 1: So once you signed that contract with Tops to be
- 58:50Speaker 1: able to like have them use your name, image, likeness
- 58:54Speaker 1: and stuff like that, you can be included in lots
- 58:57Speaker 1: and lots of products.
- 58:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great for the hot it's great. There's not
- 59:00Speaker 2: a gimmick. It's just just true baseball on baseball cards.
- 59:05Speaker 2: But does mean we're probably getting is Bowman first, right,
- 59:09Speaker 2: Oh God, there goes the gimmick. It's it's here.
- 59:12Speaker 1: Yep, already thought. Okay, just a couple of quick tweaks
- 59:15Speaker 1: to the release calendar coming up, so we still do
- 59:18Speaker 1: have on one three here twenty twenty four Tops Luminaries
- 59:21Speaker 1: coming out one eight, twenty twenty four, Tops Archives one fifteen,
- 59:26Speaker 1: twenty twenty four. Bowman's Best got pushed back. It was
- 59:29Speaker 1: supposed to come out last week, didn't make out the
- 59:31Speaker 1: doors before the holidays, so it will be out in
- 59:34Speaker 1: a couple of weeks. And then we've still got Black
- 59:36Speaker 1: and White on the TBD schedule and Definitive on the
- 59:39Speaker 1: TBD schedule as well as there's a couple of other
- 59:41Speaker 1: like major products like I Believe, like Dynasty and Transcendent
- 59:45Speaker 1: where and Diamond Icons are all kind of like floating
- 59:48Speaker 1: in space where they keep popping on and off of
- 59:51Speaker 1: the schedule. So certainly some of those high end products
- 59:54Speaker 1: are still rolling out for TOPS and should be hitting
- 59:56Speaker 1: shelves here in Q one. So with that, we we
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: are going to take a short break, but then we'll
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: be back with a Ricky Henderson PC discussion. Stick around,
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: all right, Welcome back, everybody. We are gonna get into
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: our Ricky Henderson PC discussion. So we're gonna keep it
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: pretty brief here in terms of just a little six
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: pack PC going between us back and forth three cards apiece,
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: because Ricky Henderson certainly spanned not only like a large
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: swatha baseball in general with his twenty five years and
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: nine teams, but also went across the entire junk wax
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: era that we call it from the eighties and nineties.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: So in terms of players out there with like the
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: most cards, I think Ricky Henderson has probably got to
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: be up there in terms of most unique cards. I'm
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: looking at TCDB, which we use a lot trading card database,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: and on his profile page fourteen seven hundred and thirty
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: five unique cards that are kind of counted in here.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: And so this is pre thorough covers a lot of
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: like minor league cards as well as like Hostess and
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: other different brands of food that might have had, you know,
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: little card runs throughout the eighties and nineties. And certainly
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: Ricky Henderson has remained a very popular player because, like
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: I said at the beginning part of this show, he
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: was maybe a little bit before our time, but became
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: of our time because we got to appreciate late career
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: Ricky Henderson. And so I think that our PC will
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: reflect that as well. That looking through the lens of
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: the PC cards that we pick, the personal part of
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: that PC, I think is a big portion of it,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: and I think that's also the reason that we go
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: that direction is because that's what we want to each
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: other people to do, is you know, find a personal
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: connection to the cards that you're collecting, where you can
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: tell a story of you know, your relationship to baseball
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: or some sort of piece of history where I think
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: it adds an extra layer of just sentimental value to
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: yourself as maybe and to others out there. So I
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: think we've got a great six pack of cards here
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: for Ricky Henderson. And I think was there anything what
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: you were looking for in cards that you picked threw
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: that you really wanted to like capture the essence of
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Ricky Henderson? Like what sort of hallmarks are you maybe
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: looking for in a Ricky Henderson card for consideration before
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: you distilled those fourteen thousand dollars fourteen thousand cards down
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: into your three picks.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I wanted to commemorate, like true Ricky,
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: That's what I was going for. Like what what when
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: I think of Ricky? What do I think of, whether
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: it's the image, whether it's the card, whether you know,
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: it's just something about the uniqueness of Ricky and where
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: it came from. Like that's what I was I was
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: looking for. This wasn't about finding the most expensive card.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: May have done that, but it was about finding something
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: unique the way Ricky was a unique guy, and that's
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: really what I was after. So I think there's a
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: to your point, there's a lot of choices here. Was
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: not easy to narrow it down, but I think there's
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: a lot of good, good options out there. How about you,
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: is there anything specific that you wanted to cover all
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: nine teams or what were you trying to.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Do that would be fun. I think you can cover
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: all nine teams. I didn't exactly like tally it up,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: but I'm pretty sure, and especially given where we've gone
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: in today's environment, where like I mean, Ken Griffy Junior
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: seeing lots of like white Sox cards printed and you'll
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: see like Blue Jays, Frank Thomas that Ricky Henderson, I'm
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: sure has had a card printed with every one of
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: his jerseys on, which is really cool. But I think
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: what I was really going for in some of my
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: picks was not only to you know, call out that
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: personal kind of story within each pick, but also to
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: try to reflect the physicality of like Ricky Henderson that
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: when we were going through a lot of his stats
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: and just his longevity and his ability to accrue lots
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: of those numbers. He did it while stealing just massive
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: quantities of faces, which takes an absolute grind on your
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: body because you know, in the days that he was playing,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: there wasn't the three pickoff rule where you know you
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: could go. It was a bock onto the third pickoff
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: move over that you know, there was several times that
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: I'm sure he had to endure double digit pickoff moves
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: and diving back into the base getting slapped with that
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: first baseman's glove. That when I was reading that book
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: by Howard Bryant, a lot of like what came through
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: is because honestly, Ricky Henderson has built a lot more
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: like Bo Jackson than I think he got credit for
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: that he was a running back first as his first passion.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: That it allowed him to be able to withstand the
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: punishment of all those stolen bases and playing twenty five years.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: So I tried to pick some cards. I thought reflect
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: did that. So with all that in mind, I'm going
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: to pass over to you for the first pick that
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: we're going to do in this Rickey Henderson, PC, what
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: do you got? Yeah?
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: I mean, I think you have to start this out
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: with the Ricky Henderson card, which is his nineteen eighty
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: tops Ricky card number four eighty two. It's got the
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: classic Ricky Henderson kind of crouched batting stance, and through
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: his whole career he kind of kept that same stance.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: And when you look at that nineteen eighty set, it
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: is the card, and I'd say there's not a number
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: two behind it. Like if you find a set of those,
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: I've recently did myself and dug through, like that's the
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: one thing you're looking for, is that is Ricky there
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: and being from that nineteen eighty sets like those are
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: pretty hard to find in good condition, and so they
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: can be really sought after generally like a thirty five
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: forty dollars, you know, raw card, but you could be
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: talking in hundreds and maybe even thousands if you're getting
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: like really really quality graded cards of the Rookie for
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: Rooky Henderson. So going very simple, and hey, that Adide
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: design actually was pretty pretty good. And so you have
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: to start there with Rookie with with the the Rookie card.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: If you can't have a PC of Rookie without.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: It, Yeah, I absolutely agree. And I think a couple
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: of the other hallmarks I like about this card they're
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: like very uniquely Rocky are One you get a good
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: sense of his batting stance where he just had that
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: minuscule strike zone that allowed him to generate all those
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: walks that like just turned him into such a great player.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: And Two the back of the back of the card,
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: the stats don't have stolen bases, which is like what
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Ricky like defined, you know, in his entire career that
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: a lot of like I think what he went up
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: against in his career where you know he would hold
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: out and and try to get more money and make
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: sure that he was fairly compensated, was that the game
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: paid sluggers in the eighties, you know, Dave Winfield, Eddie Murray,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: these types of players, I mean, eventually Andre Dawson, guys
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: who hit homers and put up RBI are the ones
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: that got paid. And no one I think appreciated Ricky
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Henderson's speed and lead off abilities in his time. It's
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: missing walks too, which tells a lot of Ricky's story
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: where you can kind of figure out that obp that
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: it's just kind of funny where Honestly, those three categories stone, bases, walks,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: obp are pretty much standards of flagship cards nowadays, and
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: I think a lot of that has to do with Ricky.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're absolutely right, because you can't tell
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: the story of Ricky without with the speed, without the
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: on base, without the walks. So yeah, it's a fantastic
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: card I have to have in the PC. So how
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: about you, what's the first one that you're gonna throw
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: into the PC.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: Well, I mean, in terms of honoring and remembering the
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: lengthy twenty five year career that Ricky had, you had
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: to also go back and now add the last flagship
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: card that he ever had, which is actually the last
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: flagship card he has, was two thousand and four Upper
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Deck number one eighty eight with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: It's a great photo of him kind of taking a
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: leadoff where I think he's actually like caught in between,
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: which kind of also shows the age of Ricky in
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: this card. But also how did they fit every year
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: on the back of this card Statistically, I don't know how,
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: but Upper Deck managed to do it. So you get
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: all of the statistics of Ricky in this last card.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: From two thousand and four Upper Deck not a really great,
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: well known set, but this might be the cheapest card
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: we ever put into any of our PCs that I
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: figured you had to go. If you're going to start
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: with the first flagship, I'll take the last flagship. He
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: didn't have a two thousand and four TOPS card. His
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: last TOPS card was in two thousand and three, So
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: we have to go to upper deck. If we want
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: Ricky in a Dodgers series, he here, And.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: I think what's cool about this is your point, like,
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: how do they fit all the stats? First of all
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: from seventy nine to three, which is just insane to
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: think about playing for different decades, But it is his
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: true career, entire stat line, and so you have the
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: stat line that Ricky Henderson retired with on this card,
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: and so I think it's cool to just have that.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: As you know, a young collector, I always love reading
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: the stats in the back of the card. Stolen bases
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: are on this Walks is not, but it's great to
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: be able to see just kind of the summerization of
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: his entire career on one card. And it does look
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: like they had to change the fond I need to
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: go find somebody else from the set to see what
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: the true font is on this. But he definitely stretched
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: the margins for.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Sure, Yes, exactly. Gonna need like a magnifying glass to
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: be able to look and see some of these totals
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: in some of the especially the trade years too, where
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: you get the slashes and they're trying to jam everything
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: in there.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: The median price on TCDB is eighteen cents, yes exactly. Now,
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: I don't know that you can actually buy rating cents,
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: but basically mean somebody will give it to you if
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: you ask.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: Yeah, you're gonna pay more for the stamp to get
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: it to you than the card itself.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: No kidding.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: Okay, what's your second pick and third overall for our
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: Ricky PC.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: Yeah, well, we're gonna we're gonna stick to the bookings here.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: And actually I'm gonna go go back for a second
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: to his rookie card. And I didn't want to call
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: it out them, but I'm gonna call it now. There's
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: only one reference to stolen bases on Ricky Henderson's rookie
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: card in the nineteen eighty They always had like a
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: little call out of some achievement or something he did,
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: and an upper left fan corner says Ricky had seven
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: stolen bases in one game at Modesto in May of
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: nineteen seventy seven. So we're going to Ricky Henderson's first card,
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: first cards that exist. It is the nineteen seventy seven
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: Desto A's Team set put out by Chong, and there
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: are very few of these cards out there. It is
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: black and white. It is Ricky still got the little
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: stance going. It looks like he's holding a wolfotball bat.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: To be honest, it does not look like he's holding
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: an actual baseball bat in this card. It's like I said,
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: it's black and white, so it's kind of hard hard
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: to tell, but maybe it's a fun go but it
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: looks like a wofftball bat. And then the other fun
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: parts about this his name is miss spelled on this card.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: It's Ricky without the E. And the actual there was
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: correct versions that came out later, but in the actual release,
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: and this one has been reprinted many, many times. If
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: you're gonna look to go get this, you got to
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: make sure you're getting the actual card because they reprinted
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: it quite often. But this is a very hard card
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: to find. The most recent one I could find this
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: sold on eBay at bids was forty six hundred dollars,
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: so not the for the cheap like we just talked
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: about for the last card. There's quite the quite the
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: difference there. But I just thought this was a really
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: unique card, something that if you if you want to
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: have that true Ricky PC, you gotta have the rookie.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: You gotta have a first card, you gotta have his
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: last card, you gotta have that bookend to that career.
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: And there's just so many unique things about this because
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: at the time, Ricky wasn't Ricky. Ricky was just a
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: guy trying to find a job, trying to make it happen,
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: trying to make the big leads. He was important enough
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: to even get the name spelled right. So it's it's
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: it's just it's the great thing about card collecting is
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: you know you pick this up when you went to
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: a minor league game, and you kept it in your
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: collection for all those years, probably forgot about it until
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: you just opened up. It's like, Hey, I got a
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: Ricky Henderson card. That's kind of funny. So I love
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: adding this the PC.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: Yeah, this is like the most basic card ever too.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: Because there's no back to it and it's all washed
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: out in the front. That it just shows how far
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: baseball card technology has come, especially for minor league cards
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: and kind of like offshoot cards that it's much easier
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: to produce compared to Honestly, it looks like somebody just
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: like printed this like themselves and like got them so there,
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: it's very basic. I love it. It's also like the
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: Ricky does not look that different from nineteen seventy seven
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: to that car does four, which shows how great of
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: shape he stayed in that entire career, that like he
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: was a supreme athlete and just like took care of
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: his body. That it's a testament to Ricky himself.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: Absolutely, and that's that's it's uncanny. He looks the same
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: same he was when he was eighteen that he was
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: when he was forty five. All right, where'd you go
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: with your second card?
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: Okay, So here's one where yeah, certainly getting into the
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: personal story because I am picking nineteen ninety four Collector's
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: Choice number one thirty one Ricky Henderson on the Toronto
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: Blue Jays. So it's a great card of Ricky's stealing
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: a base and diving into it looks like second, I think,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: but could be third. Uh, he's at home in the SkyDome.
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: His jersey's already all dirty, like he's been diving all game.
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: You gotta remember, like how often this dude was also
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: playing on turf between Toronto and Minnesota and Houston. You
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: know the old astro down that not only was he
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: out there diving all over the place, he was doing
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: on turf a lot, which is insane to think about.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: You can also see on the back of the card
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: Ricky's crouch is getting lower and lower as he's getting
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: into a stance to unload on a ball. Nineteen ninety three,
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: he was traded from the A's to the J's won
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: that nineteen ninety three World Series for the second straight
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: with Toronto, or Toronto's second straight Ricky's second World Series
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: of his career. But the personal angle here is one
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: ninety four Collector's choice is super duper underrated. That essentially
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: it's like a recast of ninety three Upper Deck in
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: terms of the pictures on the front and the pictures
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: on the back both being really great. And then nineteen
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: ninety three is really like the first year that I
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: got into baseball. Personally, I really vividly remember the Marlins
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: and the Rockies being their inaugural season. It's the first
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: year that I went to a baseball game. It was
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: actually like a it was a rainout between the Cubs
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: and the Rockies at Wrigley Field. And I also vividly
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: remember the nineteen ninety three World Series with Joe Carter
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: hitting that walk off bomb. But I also remember, like
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: this is probably my first introduction to Ricky, Like in
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: the ninety three season, I was. I remember when I
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: was following it along. I was certainly into Griffy, I
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: was into Sammy Sosa and Ozzie Smith, but Ricky wasn't
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: totally on my radar because at that point he was
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: what like thiry three I believe he was born. But yeah,
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: so he was, you know, further along in his career overall,
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: and you know, had already put up fifteen seasons at
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: that point, so you know, when he was moved at
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: the deadline, it was a huge deal that I remember
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: him moving over to Toronto, and it really just kind
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: of opened my eyes too. Ricky was so that's what
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: this nineteen ninety four Collector's Choice card kind of all
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: harkens back to I went with a silver signature edition
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: because these Collector's Choice cards had the silver and gold
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: signatures on them, which were great. You could go out
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: and get the base card of this again, probably for
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: like fifteen cents. It's a ubiquitous set, but one of
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: my favorite sets and one of my favorite all time
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: Ricky cards.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: Hey, it's not easy to say that you four x
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: your prior card value until stay it under a dollar,
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: But good job. I'm proud of you. But yeah, I
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: go right back to like that. That's the time I
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: was getting into the game in the cards. I remember
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: the Blue Juice series like it was just as yesterday.
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: So I think it's a great, great callback to when
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: we were both growing up and just starting to get
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: into the game.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: And probably honestly just met each other.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: Yeah, probably Drue. Yeah.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: Anothering I just realized too, is the batting gloves that
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: Ricky's wearing in both the front and back of this
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: card are still as oakland A's batting gloves, which also
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: is kind of a cool twist. You can see the
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: green and gold as opposed to the blue, so it's
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: a it's just funny and stands out.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Ricky takes no prisoners. And you know there's no photoshop
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: in ninety four collector's.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: Choice, especially on batting gloves. That's naked photo shop and
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: airbrush like hats, but just barely. Okay, I'm gonna pass
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: it back over to you for your final pick for
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: our six pack PC here.
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: All right, So the last one is about the image.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: It's not about the card, and it's if there's an
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: iconic Ricky image, this is it. I'm going with the
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: twenty twenty Stadium Club chrome with Avery fractor number three
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: ninety nine from that set. You can go with a
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: number of different refractors or whatever. It doesn't doesn't matter.
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: This is an image of Ricky with the a's holding up.
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: I believe it is second base after you tol in it,
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: that's third yeah, okay, you're right just down the line there.
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: And so it's one of those iconic images of him
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: breaking a record with his stolen bases. I should have
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: looked up which record it was. I'm guessing it was
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: his one hundredth or that he stole or something like that.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: But this is when he passed lou Brock.
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: Was when he passed Brock.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: Okay, and then I'm the greatest speech. Yes, immediately, yes,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: and so it's just to me one of the most
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: iconic images of Ricky Henderson. And you know, Stadium Club
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: be one of our favorite sets for them to grab this,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: make sure it's on a card. I do struggle with
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: older players on newer cards, you know that, But it
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: doesn't matter. This card is just unbelievable, looks great, and
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: I think it's very very collectible as a result this
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: this wave refractors I have will have linked in the
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: show notes. The ps A ten listened on eBay for
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: four seventy five. I'm sure you can get it for
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: a little bit less, but still that's that's the collectibility
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: of that image and it is just if you think
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: of Ricky, that is probably one of those moments that
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: you think of. So I had to add to the
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: PC out of the Rookie, out of the first prints
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: that we're just going to go for just a cool
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: Rocky card. Yeah, I mean, this is an icon of card,
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: and I mean we pick from twenty twenty Stadium Club
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: Chrome a lot, but like this is a card where
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: it stands out in the entire set because it's just
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: such a banger. Of a card with this image, and
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: then the waiver refractors are super duper short printed. They're
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: not numbered, but they're like roughly of twelve, so there
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: are not many of them out there. And I mean
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: the picture doesn't do this justice because I have a
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: couple of the waiver fractors from this set and they
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: are some of the most gorgeous cards you'll ever see. So, yeah,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: you can't go wrong with the twenty twenty Stadium Club
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: Chrome set. And the Ricky card is is right up
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: that avenue.
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: Yeah, so hey, out of this to the set, you
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: can get the base out there too. It's still a
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: pretty awesome card, all right.
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: Well, my last pick is it's kind of serendipitous that
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: this came out so late in the release of twenty
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: twenty four now that that Ricky has passed the twenty
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: twenty four TOPS Chrome update. And we've covered this a
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: little bit when we did the set overview when it
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: came out, we were especially focused on all the Paul
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: Skemes cards within that set, but one of the highlights
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: was that Ricky Henderson was signing TOPS Chrome based design
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: autographs for the first time in twenty twenty four. That
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: he had never done that before, and Ricky was not
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: somebody who is out there signing quite as often as
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: like other Hall of famers, that he was much more
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: protective of his signature and just making sure that he
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: was compensated correctly for using his name, image and likeness.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: And like, I think he had a fair point that
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: there's lots of players who, like just our institutions around
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: baseball players that latch on and make money off of
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: them to be able to kind of like ride their coattails,
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: and I think Ricky was very aware of that and
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: just didn't sign very much stuff. So, especially thinking about
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: the Barry Bonds signature is coming into the twenty twenty
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: five sets, it's really fantastic that we got some of
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: these Ricky Henderson signed Tops Chrome designed cards from twenty
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: twenty four sadly going to be the only ones that
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: we end up having of him on a base tops
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: chrome design, So these things are only going to go
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: up in value. The base was of fifty and then
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: it had parallels going from there. But I think if
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: you're looking to put together a Ricky PC, this is
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: gonna obviously run you probably like four to five hundred
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: bucks just based on how rare it is and what
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: the one I found. Actually it's only three hundred right now,
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: so it's a steal if you have it. This comes
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: in a green as well, and that's where you should
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: You should pone up, pony up and try to find
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: it because it looks it would look especially great it
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: pop with the athletics, you know, logo and the design
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four, even though I hated it overall,
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: it looks pretty good here with the chrome and the
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: auto that you've got to go out and get it
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: because of just what it meant to actually card collecting
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: in general and rounding out Ricky's life and career. That
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: this is going to be one of the last issued
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: autographed cards that he has out there. That I wouldn't
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: be surprised if he's got stuff in twenty twenty five,
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: but especially anything on card, it's not gonna happen anymore, sadly,
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: So I had to put this card in the PC
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: and that will wrap us up for this six pack here.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: But what do you think about this card? Brew that like,
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: we didn't talk about it real heavily in detail from
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: our tops Chrome update overview. But are you hoping that
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: we see more cards kind of like this in this
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: vein And you know, what do you think about this
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: Ricky card? Kind of in the pantheon of everything what
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: else we got?
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think this is a great ad
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: the fact that he doesn't sign a whole lot. And
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: I think it's also as you look at a lot
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: of those kind of Hall of Fame signatures, there's very
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: few on card ones that you see, and this Ricky
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: is an on card auto unless I can't quite see
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: the outline of the sticker, but I'm pretty sure it's
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: on card auto, and that is not something we see
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: as much we see signings, Like I said, the stickers
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: and they just using it throughout products and things like that.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: I think they did a great job of making these
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: on card using to your point that the design this
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: year and the refractor of that to make it really pop.
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: So I think these are great cards. It is disappointing.
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: I'm kind of hoping maybe they did get Slipperricky a
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: few of those sheets of stickers at some point so
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: that maybe we can see some down the road. But
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: wonderful signature from Ricky. And again, any card of Ricky
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: with him running is what you want to see. So
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: I think this is a great pick, great way to
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: round out our PC additions for Ricky Henderson. Ricky will
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: be missed. So much about him is what makes us
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: love baseball, especially those of us that love kind of
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: the vintage game, the small ball, those kind of things.
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: Ricky he loved the game, and Ricky did so many
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: things for the game. So sad to see him gone
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: too soon. But hey, there's probably not many better players
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: out there, and definitely no better leadoff hitters in you know,
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: our generation or even those before.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree, And it's really sad that he,
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: you know, passed so soon. And it is going to
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: be kind of an honor to talk about being able
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: to have seen him play at all, even though you know,
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: you and I saw maybe more of the back half
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: of his career and didn't see the excellence of the eighties.
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: But like, he was still such a legend and I
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: think will go down as just an all time or
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: for all time because a lot of those records are
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: not gonna be touched in terms of like when people
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: look at the record books of baseball in one hundred
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: years or so, it's going to become like mythical, how
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: many stolen bases he has, the way that Cy Young's
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: wins mark just is untouchable. That Ricky put himself into
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: that upper echelon of baseball where it's just you know,
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: he's going to be in etched into the monoliths of
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: statistical records for all time. And that's just so amazing,
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: especially given who he was, and you know where he
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: came from in Oakland and played for Oakland and just
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: kind of wore that on his sleeve, that, yeah, rest
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: in peace, Rickey will make you miss you, Bud.
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: And one more thing, I bought this card. It has
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: War on the back, which is great to see one
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: hundred and eleven War nineteenth all time. Yes, that's how
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: good he was, and that's how long of a career
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: he had. Fantastic to see so.
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: Well, and that classic kind of Bill James line that
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: if you split him into he's still a Hall of Famer,
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: or if you even just peel off the stolen bases
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: from Ricky's profile, still a Hall of famer, that like
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: he is just that much of an inner circle guy
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: that like it's like it's down to like you know,
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: Ruth and May's and Aaron and some of these other
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: players that just put up gigantic, unfathomable numbers. Ricky's right
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: there that it's not somebody who I think anybody's ever
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: going to touch statistically of all time.
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: Yeah, you talk about Ricky and the guys around him
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: in the all time, it's Mickey Mantle, It's lou Gerrigg,
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: it's Frank Robinson, it's Ted Williams. It is those kind
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: of guys. That's the company we're talking about. And Ricky
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: did that kind of in a time that there wasn't
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: guys putting up those numbers doing those kinds of things.
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: Huad and shoulders above, Hudd and shoulders above.
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: Yeah, and Robbed with just the one MVP as well.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: I don't think we've made that point at all, but
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: he definitely should have won like four or five MVPs
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: in his career if they had been voting correctly, especially
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: in the eighties where, yeah, the New York media did
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: not like McK anderson very well and really kind of
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: tainted a lot of all of our views of him.
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: And so it's been great to see Ricky's kind of
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: image come back from where it was in the eighties,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: and you know, get to the point where we're here
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: now just kind of can't stop speaking great things about him.
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: But let's wrap it up for this week, our first
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: pot at twenty twenty five. We've got lots of great
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: stuff coming over the next few weeks in terms of previews,
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: getting you ready for the season and all the drafts.
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: But like, yeah, I got to start playing mine out
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: as a commissioner and making sure that if you are
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: out there getting into drafts now, certainly sign up for
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: Rasball or premium subscription. Got all sorts of tools in
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: terms of draft rooms, and honestly just about day by
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: day a little bit more week by week here in
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: early January, where we get more and more tools coming out,
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: we'll get the engine driveed up. Brew. When is your
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: first top one hundred coming out? Do you know roughly.
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: First top one hundred. We'll do a slow rolls usually
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: what we'll do kind of about that last four to
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: five weeks before the season. I gotta voice step on
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: Grace toes By for that one. But we'll jump through
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: some early prospect hitter profiles. We'll look at the phase,
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: we'll look at the guys that we're expecting to break out,
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: and then we're going to go through about about four
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: weeks probably here in probably late February through early March,
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: rolling out that top one hundred, and then we'll do
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: one fail swoop like the week before the season with
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: a finalized list of all the spring training happenings, everything
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: that's changed with that top one hundred. So those will
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: be coming out here over the next few months on
