- 2:32Speaker 1: Now back a couple of months ago, I did I
- 2:37Speaker 1: did a Sleepers in the Catalog episode right, and essentially
- 2:42Speaker 1: what it was was me talking about albums within artist's
- 2:48Speaker 1: catalog that I feel people kind of sleep on. And
- 2:52Speaker 1: one of the reasons why I feel like people sort
- 2:55Speaker 1: of sleep on these specific albums is because they're just
- 3:00Speaker 1: better albums in the catalog that people are more tied
- 3:05Speaker 1: to that maybe at some point they fell off listening
- 3:10Speaker 1: to this artist's music, or they heard a single or
- 3:15Speaker 1: a record or they stopped checking, whatever it may be.
- 3:18Speaker 1: But I'm here to tell you they got some heat
- 3:22Speaker 1: and you may be overlooking the album of two. So
- 3:25Speaker 1: let's get right into this list. And again this is
- 3:28Speaker 1: part two, so I'll make sure to link part one
- 3:33Speaker 1: so you can check out those albums in this episode.
- 3:36Speaker 1: But first up, The Game nineteen ninety two is the
- 3:42Speaker 1: name of the album. It was released in twenty sixteen.
- 3:47Speaker 1: There were thirteen tracks or items, because you know sometimes
- 3:53Speaker 1: their skits fifty three minutes in length. This album, well,
- 3:59Speaker 1: let me just say this about Game first. Game's catalog
- 4:05Speaker 1: is slept on in general. I think his antics have
- 4:09Speaker 1: somewhat have someone to do with that, right, Whether that
- 4:14Speaker 1: and that's that's a lot of different things, right, nothing
- 4:17Speaker 1: about really the music and the rapping, but more about
- 4:21Speaker 1: what he does outside of that, right, what he says,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you know, certain activities before he became a rapper. You
- 4:28Speaker 1: know some things he did after right, putting out dis
- 4:32Speaker 1: records towards like Eminem and Kendrick and getting ignored. Right,
- 4:36Speaker 1: it just makes it seem like, why would I listen
- 4:39Speaker 1: to a new project from Game? He's laying but you
- 4:44Speaker 1: know what they lied, He's not. I'll just say this
- 4:48Speaker 1: before I get a little bit deep into this album.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I wasn't the biggest fan of the documentary because of
- 4:55Speaker 1: the name drop it. It was almost like, Yo, does
- 4:58Speaker 1: this cat like this? He is just like a straight
- 5:01Speaker 1: up fan rapping, Like who is he as a rapper?
- 5:04Speaker 1: Because all he did was name drop and then he
- 5:07Speaker 1: dropped Doctor's Advocate and I was like, Okay, this is
- 5:10Speaker 1: a little bit better. And some name dropping happens in
- 5:13Speaker 1: rap in general, but it was like on a documentary,
- 5:16Speaker 1: it was like that's all he did. And then as
- 5:19Speaker 1: he started to release more albums later on, I was like, Yo,
- 5:24Speaker 1: this dude is really dope, and I feel like people
- 5:28Speaker 1: are somewhat sleeping. And one of those records that was
- 5:32Speaker 1: slept on to me big time is nineteen ninety two.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I've talked about it on this podcast before. It's an
- 5:38Speaker 1: album that game essentially just took everything that was going
- 5:44Speaker 1: on in nineteen ninety two and made it the concept
- 5:48Speaker 1: for this album. And from a West Coast standpoint, so
- 5:52Speaker 1: from things with bloods and crips to the Rodney King
- 5:55Speaker 1: situation to you know O. J. Simpson right, like everything
- 6:04Speaker 1: was here and if you were around in nineteen ninety two,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and especially if you were watching OJ get Chased by
- 6:11Speaker 1: the Cops on the Highway live. You know, the Rodney
- 6:15Speaker 1: King situation, the fallout, the riots. Even if you were
- 6:20Speaker 1: into the West Coast early nineties West Coast hip hop
- 6:24Speaker 1: culture like I was heavy on the music side, but
- 6:26Speaker 1: then there was also films like Boys in the Hood
- 6:29Speaker 1: and Manister Society. And think about it this way, like
- 6:34Speaker 1: you think about a game like Grant that photo san
- 6:37Speaker 1: Andres that plays off of that early nineties West Coast
- 6:42Speaker 1: vibe lingo everything game put together a fantastic album. I
- 6:50Speaker 1: don't even say work. I don't use words like that,
- 6:54Speaker 1: you know, I usually yo, it was hot lit, whatever,
- 6:57Speaker 1: five whatever. Fantastic album about all the things I just said.
- 7:04Speaker 1: And it opens up with a track called Savage Life
- 7:07Speaker 1: with they use a lot of like audio from back then,
- 7:11Speaker 1: from different events. It's just one of those concept albums
- 7:16Speaker 1: that you get into it and you kind of like,
- 7:21Speaker 1: especially from a nostalgia standpoint, you're kind of like, damn,
- 7:24Speaker 1: this is dope. But even if you weren't around too,
- 7:28Speaker 1: you know, you wasn't born or you wasn't listening to
- 7:31Speaker 1: hip hop in ninety two, or whatever, or any of
- 7:33Speaker 1: the things I mentioned. This is just an artist taking
- 7:38Speaker 1: a concept, speaking from a perspective of somebody who grew
- 7:43Speaker 1: up in that world around the nineties. And what's also
- 7:47Speaker 1: dope is the album cover I believe is the same
- 7:51Speaker 1: artists that drew the album cover for Doggie Style, which
- 7:55Speaker 1: dropped in nineteen ninety three. So again the game nineteen
- 7:59Speaker 1: ninety TI to I think incredibly slept on album in
- 8:04Speaker 1: his catalog. Next up Outcasts Idlewild. I know, I know,
- 8:12Speaker 1: I know. To some people the last Outcast album was
- 8:18Speaker 1: speaker Box The Love Below, and to some people Idle
- 8:24Speaker 1: Wild the movie was hot garbage. I don't disagree with
- 8:30Speaker 1: you on the second one. The movie was not great
- 8:35Speaker 1: in some ways. It kind of feels like Sinners before Sinners.
- 8:38Speaker 1: But I'm just saying, but it just wasn't really that
- 8:42Speaker 1: good of a movie. But the soundtrack we're gonna talk
- 8:47Speaker 1: about it, right, So Idlewild was released in two thousand
- 8:53Speaker 1: and six, would be the twentieth anniversary of this album,
- 8:58Speaker 1: so definitely a time for you to check it out.
- 9:02Speaker 1: There were a ton of songs. I think they were
- 9:05Speaker 1: close to what do we have here? Like fourteen Wait,
- 9:12Speaker 1: I have duplicates on here, which messes things up but
- 9:19Speaker 1: skits everything like that or whatever. Sleepy Brown appears on
- 9:23Speaker 1: his album Dude names Scars on his album I Think
- 9:27Speaker 1: That's it for features. No Snoop Dogg, and Lil Wayne
- 9:31Speaker 1: was on a track called Hollywood Divorce. Janelle Money was
- 9:35Speaker 1: on here. Killer Mike, Yeah, I forgot about some of these.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Macy Gray was on here. Macy Grave believe was in
- 9:41Speaker 1: the film also. But I'll say this, if you watch
- 9:49Speaker 1: the movie and thedn't get through it because it was trash,
- 9:52Speaker 1: I get it. If you didn't watch the movie but
- 9:55Speaker 1: you heard the movie was trash and ignore the album,
- 9:58Speaker 1: I get it. But if you didn't watch the movie
- 10:03Speaker 1: or you like the movie being tied to the soundtrack,
- 10:08Speaker 1: I don't think the music is bad. The music is excellent.
- 10:12Speaker 1: And the only reason why I say this is because
- 10:14Speaker 1: again it's like the step Child in the Outcast catalog.
- 10:18Speaker 1: It's quite literally the last Outcast album and it wasn't
- 10:24Speaker 1: necessarily whack. And I say this because when you look
- 10:27Speaker 1: at Outcast's albums, right, none of them sound the same.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Each one has a different vibe. Southern Playlistics doesn't sound
- 10:37Speaker 1: like at Aliens at Aliens doesn't sound like Stankonia or
- 10:43Speaker 1: a Quimini speaker. Box of Love Below don't sound like anything.
- 10:47Speaker 1: They don't sound like each other, and they don't sound
- 10:49Speaker 1: like anything else they're released. That's the same thing with Idle.
- 10:52Speaker 1: While it's a clear vision of the blues right some
- 11:00Speaker 1: I guess some Biloxi blues too, a little bit of jazz,
- 11:04Speaker 1: but it's not all that. It's really like they took
- 11:09Speaker 1: the vibe of a juke joint right from back in
- 11:13Speaker 1: the days and they just did it Outcast style. And
- 11:17Speaker 1: I know maybe for some people that didn't work, maybe
- 11:20Speaker 1: they didn't want to hear any harmonicas, but you've heard
- 11:22Speaker 1: them before in Outcast music. You can't say you like
- 11:27Speaker 1: stink one or something else and then say well, yeah,
- 11:30Speaker 1: I didn't like when they use this, like this is
- 11:34Speaker 1: what they do. Outcast had basically a techno record in
- 11:38Speaker 1: ghetto music, and I loved it at first. When I
- 11:41Speaker 1: heard it, I was like, what is this? But it
- 11:43Speaker 1: was it wasn't all that was on the album. And again,
- 11:47Speaker 1: Outcast just provides a variety. So I feel like, if
- 11:50Speaker 1: you're a big Outcast fan and somebody told you Idle
- 11:54Speaker 1: while the movie was whack, I agree with him, but
- 11:59Speaker 1: someone told you all of it was whack. I disagree.
- 12:03Speaker 1: The soundtrack is banging, it is, so check that out.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Next up, Little Brother Get Back. Now, I call this
- 12:15Speaker 1: a sleeper only because generally speaking, when people talk about
- 12:21Speaker 1: Little Brother, they talk about the debut, the listening, and
- 12:25Speaker 1: the follow up, the Minstre Show, right, the Men's Show
- 12:29Speaker 1: being my favorite album from a Little Brother, But Get
- 12:34Speaker 1: Back was the follow up, I believe, the follow up
- 12:40Speaker 1: to the Minstre Show. And this is when Ninth Wonder
- 12:46Speaker 1: left the group, so to speak. Right, I think he
- 12:49Speaker 1: might have provided a beat or two for this project,
- 12:52Speaker 1: but he's not on the album cover, so he wasn't
- 12:54Speaker 1: a part of the trio like he was with the
- 12:57Speaker 1: first two albums. And this album was released in two
- 13:01Speaker 1: thousand and seven. Eleven tracks, forty nine minutes. Features included
- 13:09Speaker 1: a couple of people I believe, but one of this well,
- 13:12Speaker 1: Lil Wayne was on here for sure, Carla Duran was here,
- 13:17Speaker 1: and a couple of records. Darien Brockington was here. A
- 13:23Speaker 1: couple of people on here. But this is this That's
- 13:25Speaker 1: not the point. The point is what I said. Every
- 13:29Speaker 1: time people think about Little Brothers catalog, and I'm not
- 13:32Speaker 1: talking about super fans. They only think about those first
- 13:35Speaker 1: two albums and maybe separate equal like the mixtapes and
- 13:40Speaker 1: stuff like that. But when I heard get Back, I
- 13:44Speaker 1: was I was sad prior to that, like Damn Ninth,
- 13:47Speaker 1: not in a group no more, what is this going
- 13:49Speaker 1: to be? But then when I heard it get Back,
- 13:52Speaker 1: I was like, Oh, we're just gonna turn it up
- 13:55Speaker 1: a little bit. That's all we do, you know what
- 13:57Speaker 1: I'm saying. So and I heard this album and this
- 14:01Speaker 1: is when I was really going heavy with my like
- 14:05Speaker 1: being in the gym and a lot of times I
- 14:07Speaker 1: was just to get through workouts. I would just listening
- 14:09Speaker 1: to music. This was like a go to for me,
- 14:13Speaker 1: Like the track with a Little Way Breaking my Heart
- 14:16Speaker 1: is so ill, like it's a dope joint. Good Clothes
- 14:22Speaker 1: is like a typical this had to be Fonte's idead,
- 14:26Speaker 1: typical like let Me put on my good clothes, typical
- 14:30Speaker 1: Fonte type track for Little Brother or Little Brother type track.
- 14:34Speaker 1: To be honest, So many dope records on here, but again,
- 14:40Speaker 1: I just don't hear enough people talking about this one.
- 14:43Speaker 1: In particular. I thought it was dope. Now I get
- 14:46Speaker 1: it sometimes, like I said with the outcast situation, if
- 14:52Speaker 1: you strayed from a sound that people are comfortable with
- 14:57Speaker 1: and a formula meaning three members of the group as
- 15:01Speaker 1: opposed to two, some people feel like it's never the same,
- 15:05Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Like they would have preferred
- 15:08Speaker 1: to know that Ninth did all those tracks and Ninth
- 15:11Speaker 1: is on the cover with them. But I'm telling you this,
- 15:14Speaker 1: if you like Little Brother for Beats and Bars, when
- 15:18Speaker 1: you listen, it does not matter. The record is dope,
- 15:22Speaker 1: so check it out. So here's an album that admittedly
- 15:28Speaker 1: I slept on, but I slept on probably within the
- 15:31Speaker 1: same year was released, which was two thousand and five,
- 15:35Speaker 1: and it's Snoop Dogg's Rhythm and Gangster RNG the Masterpiece,
- 15:41Speaker 1: and it was it was sort of like Snoop's version
- 15:45Speaker 1: of I'm gonna make an album for the ladies and
- 15:49Speaker 1: the players, right, but not so much on some not
- 15:54Speaker 1: Father m C style, you know what I'm saying, but
- 15:57Speaker 1: Snoop style, right, something that's not necessary severally just gangster
- 16:01Speaker 1: are hard edge, and I think around two thousand and
- 16:04Speaker 1: five this is this is after Snoop is Off No Limit.
- 16:09Speaker 1: I believe. Yeah, no, yeah. The Last Male was his
- 16:12Speaker 1: No Limit record, but and this was this probably would
- 16:18Speaker 1: have been considered a double album back then. It was
- 16:21Speaker 1: released in November of two thousand and four. Twenty tracks
- 16:26Speaker 1: on here, but some of those skits one hour and
- 16:30Speaker 1: eighteen minutes. Now, I will say this for this album,
- 16:34Speaker 1: there are songs on here that I skip. And I'm
- 16:37Speaker 1: not saying that the other albums I you know, went
- 16:39Speaker 1: through them, you know, straight, without skipping a record or
- 16:44Speaker 1: two I didn't like. But on Head there are some
- 16:47Speaker 1: strong records and then there's some that's kind of like, man, whatever.
- 16:53Speaker 1: But the strong records are strong on here, right. And
- 16:57Speaker 1: if you're wondering, like, well, what's what's the standard out
- 17:01Speaker 1: single off of this album? Which is what you call it,
- 17:07Speaker 1: drop it like It's hot. That was the standout single
- 17:09Speaker 1: off of this album. But there was so much more here.
- 17:13Speaker 1: And I think when Snoop went to No Limit and
- 17:17Speaker 1: that first album was like Snoop wrapping over No Limit
- 17:21Speaker 1: beats and it just it just wasn't the same as
- 17:24Speaker 1: him being on Death Row. I think people just wrote
- 17:27Speaker 1: him off album wise at that point in time, and
- 17:32Speaker 1: even when he was still on No Limit, he was
- 17:35Speaker 1: able to master p was able to recapture that sound
- 17:39Speaker 1: by bringing in dre and more West Coast production, especially
- 17:44Speaker 1: on the last Meal, which I think is also kind
- 17:47Speaker 1: of slept on, or maybe it's not slept on. I
- 17:49Speaker 1: think most people know you know if you know, you know.
- 17:53Speaker 1: But as Snoop continued to drop albums like Costs to
- 17:58Speaker 1: What Does It Paid? The Cost to Be the Boss?
- 18:00Speaker 1: And records like that and then Rhythm and Gangster, I
- 18:04Speaker 1: think some people were sleeping and they just heard the
- 18:07Speaker 1: singles uh this album like obviously drop is drop It
- 18:11Speaker 1: like is Hot is dope? Standout record. I love the
- 18:16Speaker 1: song ups and downs like I love it. The business
- 18:21Speaker 1: is cool, Let's get blown produced by Pharrell is my joint?
- 18:26Speaker 1: Like yo again this album my bad almost press play
- 18:33Speaker 1: on this this album again. If you're looking for doggie
- 18:37Speaker 1: styles Snoop, no, no, you got the wrong album fans,
- 18:44Speaker 1: That's not what this is. If you're looking for uh
- 18:49Speaker 1: beautiful right, which it wasn't on this album but was
- 18:53Speaker 1: produced by Pharrell like that kind of Snoop rapping over
- 18:58Speaker 1: beats that feel like that and again, drop It like
- 19:01Speaker 1: It's Hot is on here, So not all of it
- 19:02Speaker 1: sounds like that. But in general, if you were looking
- 19:05Speaker 1: for an idea of what the rhythm part right of
- 19:10Speaker 1: this R and B sounding album is, That's beautiful is
- 19:16Speaker 1: one of those examples. But it's a dope album, and
- 19:20Speaker 1: I think it's one of the slept on albums in
- 19:22Speaker 1: Snoop's catalog. And lastly, now here's album that I've definitely
- 19:28Speaker 1: talked about before. Ray Kwan's Chilin Versus Wu Tang, released
- 19:37Speaker 1: in twenty eleven, seventeen tracks, forty nine minutes. This was
- 19:46Speaker 1: the album. Well, let me say this real quick. Features
- 19:50Speaker 1: included method Man, ghost Face, Spected, Deck Estelle, Busta Rohm's,
- 19:56Speaker 1: Jim Jones, Nas Rahim de von On, Rick Ross, and
- 20:02Speaker 1: Black Thought. Yes, all those people were on this album.
- 20:06Speaker 1: And also this was the follow up to Only Built
- 20:11Speaker 1: for Cuban Links Too, right. He had released that people
- 20:15Speaker 1: were back on board, like Yo raised back, and he
- 20:19Speaker 1: released his album right after that, and I felt like
- 20:22Speaker 1: his momentum was going up after that, because now this
- 20:28Speaker 1: wasn't a sequel album. This was a brand new album
- 20:32Speaker 1: with a ton of dope features. But yet somehow it
- 20:37Speaker 1: don't get talked about like that, right, And I'm talking
- 20:40Speaker 1: about like most people loved only built for Cuban links too.
- 20:46Speaker 1: So when he announces a new album, Sha Lin Versus
- 20:50Speaker 1: Wu Tang, which is a title reminiscent of the roots
- 20:53Speaker 1: of you know, Ray Kuan and everybody Wu Tang, I
- 20:58Speaker 1: was like, okay, let me listen. Oh, Lloyd Banks is
- 21:01Speaker 1: on here. Also, I'm like, let me listen, right, And
- 21:05Speaker 1: then you look at the features. The free features work.
- 21:08Speaker 1: All the Woo members are here, right, ghost is on
- 21:10Speaker 1: two songs, but then there's also Nases here and a
- 21:14Speaker 1: couple of other features. What could go wrong? Well, people
- 21:19Speaker 1: just slept on it. People didn't listen standout records on here.
- 21:24Speaker 1: For me, Sharlin Versus Wu Tang, it sounds like it
- 21:28Speaker 1: was lifted from a Wou Tang album, right, Silver Rings
- 21:32Speaker 1: with ghost face Ray and ghosts doing what they do best.
- 21:37Speaker 1: I think what might have killed some of that momentum
- 21:41Speaker 1: was the fact that the lead single was a joint
- 21:43Speaker 1: called Button Knives, and I felt like that. I felt
- 21:48Speaker 1: like that title and the record just being okay made
- 21:53Speaker 1: some people feel like, oh, he going backwards, But it's
- 21:57Speaker 1: not true. It's not true. When you listen right rich
- 22:01Speaker 1: in Black feature in nas if you said tomorrow a
- 22:06Speaker 1: Nas and Ray Kwan album was coming out, right, master
- 22:09Speaker 1: appeal you hear me? Imagine that Exhibit Exhibit A, Okay,
- 22:15Speaker 1: exhibit A. They those two sounds. I know y'all want
- 22:19Speaker 1: Nas and Azy, but Nas and Ray Kwan would be crazy.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I'm telling you go listen to Rich and Black Hook
- 22:30Speaker 1: is crazy beats crazy. Nas is stellar performance by Nas.
- 22:38Speaker 1: You know who else had a stellar performance on him
- 22:40Speaker 1: and you probably wouldn't expect it because maybe you're a
- 22:42Speaker 1: hater or you know, he with the police or something
- 22:45Speaker 1: like that. But the song called Molasses featuring Rick Ross
- 22:50Speaker 1: and ghost Face Killer Rick Ross versus Crazy He and
- 22:54Speaker 1: Pocket Like, yo, I'm like when I first saw this
- 22:58Speaker 1: lineup and I was like, okay, Black thought makes sense,
- 23:00Speaker 1: blah blah blah, it makes sense. I'm like Rick Ross,
- 23:02Speaker 1: I don't know, Nah, Ricross get busy on this. And again,
- 23:09Speaker 1: this is one of those albums where unfortunately because Ray
- 23:17Speaker 1: had you know, he had slip up early, right he
- 23:20Speaker 1: released only Built for Cuban Links in nineteen ninety five, classic,
- 23:26Speaker 1: all time classic, It's Ray Kwan's illmatic. But then he
- 23:32Speaker 1: dropped Immobilarity, which was such a drop off a steep
- 23:37Speaker 1: drop off that most people are like, oh no, like
- 23:42Speaker 1: it's over. He really only had that one and it
- 23:45Speaker 1: can And then when you see how popular Ghost was
- 23:49Speaker 1: as a soloist, some people were even starting to say
- 23:52Speaker 1: without Ghosts, Ray albums aren't that great, which is not true. Right,
- 23:58Speaker 1: Immobilarity was, but Lex Diamond's was dope, but people were
- 24:05Speaker 1: kind of sleeping on it because it didn't say purple
- 24:08Speaker 1: tape right and them. Mobilarity to them was just like,
- 24:13Speaker 1: I can't do it. Too much time has passed, I
- 24:15Speaker 1: can't do it. But again, coming off the heels of
- 24:18Speaker 1: only Built for Cuban Links two and you drop this
- 24:24Speaker 1: and most people are like, okay again, I'm not calling
- 24:28Speaker 1: any of these albums classics. I'm just saying if you're
- 24:32Speaker 1: a hip hop head and you're a fan of any
- 24:35Speaker 1: of these artists, but you either don't know these albums,
- 24:39Speaker 1: or you didn't hear them, or you were kind of skeptical,
- 24:42Speaker 1: you're sleeping way up and check these joints out. What
- 24:46Speaker 1: do you feel about these albums that I mentioned? You know,
- 24:49Speaker 1: do you like any of them? Maybe you have a
- 24:52Speaker 1: very good reason for why you thought it wasn't that good.
