Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Dem strategist on Texas midterm chances Less blue wave, 'more like a red sinkhole'

- 0:00Speaker 1: So many of our Latino neighbors across Texas supported the
- 0:03Speaker 1: president in 2024 because they thought he was going to
- 0:07Speaker 1: lower prices. They thought he was going to end the
- 0:10Speaker 1: forever wars. They thought he was going to drain the
- 0:13Speaker 1: swamp and release the Epstein files. Those are all things
- 0:16Speaker 1: that I support, too. A year into this administration, we've
- 0:20Speaker 1: seen the president do the exact opposite. So I'm extending
- 0:23Speaker 1: an open hand to all of our Latino neighbors who
- 0:26Speaker 1: supported the president.
- 0:27Speaker 2: We are a hardworking people as Texans. And it should
- 0:31Speaker 2: be that if you work hard, you can have a
- 0:33Speaker 2: good life, right?
- 0:34Speaker 3: Work should mean something.
- 0:35Speaker 2: And it is harder to make it in Texas than
- 0:37Speaker 2: it was 12 years ago before Greg Abbott. We need
- 0:40Speaker 2: a governor who prioritizes Texans, not the moneyed interests, not
- 0:44Speaker 2: the corporate interests, but Texans.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Joining me now, Tori Gavito, co-founder and president of Way
- 0:51Speaker 4: to Win and Sawyer Hackett is still with me. What
- 0:53Speaker 4: is more Texas, Tori, than football on a Friday night?
- 0:57Speaker 4: What a pleasure to get to speak to Ina Hossa
- 1:00Speaker 4: at that game. This reporting about, you know, supposedly ICE.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Because instead of helping us, the Spaniards have hurt us
- 1:06Speaker 4: a lot.
- 1:34Speaker 5: They hurt our community.
- 1:35Speaker 3: How much of an opening is that giving Democrats, Tori?
- 2:04Speaker 5: Oh, it's a huge opening. There's a line that you
- 2:07Speaker 5: just had Ina Hossa say about this idea that work
- 2:11Speaker 5: should matter, that Latinos work hard. All of our research
- 2:14Speaker 5: is pointing to the fact that Latinos are saying that
- 2:17Speaker 5: promise is broken. The promise of working hard in exchange
- 2:21Speaker 5: for some sort of American dream is gone. People know it.
- 2:24Speaker 5: It's a broken promise. They want their time back. Everything
- 2:28Speaker 5: Trump has done since the election has been insult to injury,
- 2:33Speaker 5: where they gave him a little bit of time to
- 2:35Speaker 5: figure out how he was going to fix the economy,
- 2:38Speaker 5: and he has only made things worse. So it is
- 2:40Speaker 5: a massive opening. People are talking about a blue wave
- 2:43Speaker 5: coming to Texas, and I think it's more like a
- 2:45Speaker 5: red sinkhole, to be honest.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I've not heard that one yet, Tori. Sawyer, I'm sure
- 2:51Speaker 4: you saw the Texas cattle feeders put out a statement,
- 2:56Speaker 4: along with two other states, about what immigration enforcement has meant,
- 3:01Speaker 4: disrupting their workforce, making it more expensive to ship cattle,
- 3:05Speaker 4: and a real concern on their part that the cost
- 3:08Speaker 4: of beef could go up even further as a result.
- 3:10Speaker 4: I want you to take a listen. I asked Tallarico
- 3:13Speaker 4: about what ICE enforcement has meant for businesses in his state.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I've heard from so many of our farmers and ranchers,
- 3:23Speaker 1: so many of our business owners who thought that ICE
- 3:26Speaker 1: was going to go after violent criminals. But instead, they're
- 3:30Speaker 1: going after some of the hardest working members of our community,
- 3:34Speaker 1: immigrants who are contributing to this economy every day, who
- 3:37Speaker 1: are keeping prices low. One of the ways that this
- 3:41Speaker 1: administration is raising costs is by deporting some of the
- 3:46Speaker 1: best workers in our state and in our country. And
- 3:49Speaker 1: so we need some sanity back in our immigration policy.
- 3:52Speaker 4: I mean, at the same time, you have the Texas
- 3:54Speaker 4: Farm Bureau endorsing Ken Paxton, which I did ask Tallarico about.
- 3:58Speaker 4: He said, listen, I'm not as concerned with the bigwigs
- 4:00Speaker 4: as I am from what I'm hearing from ranchers and cattlemen.
- 4:04Speaker 4: We talk about immigration very often in terms of the individuals,
- 4:07Speaker 4: but there's been a real price for businesses in the.
- 4:09Speaker 3: State, Sawyer.
- 4:11Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, one of the biggest lies that this
- 4:13Speaker 6: administration and this president has told us is that they're
- 4:16Speaker 6: going to go after the worst of the worst. They're
- 4:18Speaker 6: going to prioritize the criminals, the gang members, the people
- 4:21Speaker 6: with criminal records. And it's just a total lie. It's
- 4:24Speaker 6: the exact opposite. I mean, they're essentially, you know, they
- 4:28Speaker 6: deployed an army of masked thugs to terrorize our communities
- 4:31Speaker 6: and abduct people. But they're doing it at places like
- 4:33Speaker 6: churches and places like ICE check-ins. They're doing it to
- 4:37Speaker 6: people who are here, who are following the steps to
- 4:40Speaker 6: do this legally, who are here legally, who are on
- 4:42Speaker 6: TPS or different parole programs, who have work visas, who
- 4:47Speaker 6: are essential parts of critical industries like farming in places
- 4:50Speaker 6: like Texas, but also places like Kansas and Nebraska and Iowa.
- 4:54Speaker 6: These are the down-ballot impacts of the Trump administration's mass
- 4:58Speaker 6: deportation agenda. And I think it's not just that affordability
- 5:01Speaker 6: crisis that's pushing Latino voters away from Trump, who, by
- 5:05Speaker 6: the way, won 55 percent of them in 2024. It's
- 5:08Speaker 6: also this immigration issue, because they were told that this
- 5:11Speaker 6: administration would prioritize the worst of the worst. And in fact,
- 5:14Speaker 6: they've just decided to abduct people randomly on the streets,
- 5:17Speaker 6: people who have brown skin and put a target on
- 5:20Speaker 6: the back of anybody in places like Texas who does
- 5:22Speaker 6: have brown skin. Texans know that Latino voters know that.
- 5:26Speaker 6: And I think that they're going to be a huge
- 5:27Speaker 6: bulwark against the Trump administration and Republicans in November.
- 5:31Speaker 4: So, Tori, admittedly, the area was in Dallas. It's a
- 5:33Speaker 4: really Democratic area. I spoke to a lot of Latino
- 5:36Speaker 4: Democratic voters and they are, as expected, enormously enthusiastic.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Here they are.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Do you think Tallarico is going to take this?
- 5:45Speaker 5: Oh, yeah. Yeah, I like him.
- 5:46Speaker 1: You know, you know, Paxson's own lawyer voted for his
- 5:50Speaker 1: vote and supported him.
- 5:52Speaker 6: Yeah, so, you know, there's a whole lot of Republicans.
- 5:54Speaker 4: That support him.
- 5:55Speaker 5: And Hinojosa? We need a new governor for sure.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I hope she wins. What do you say to
- 6:02Speaker 4: those who say that Texas is fool's gold?
- 6:05Speaker 6: No.
- 6:06Speaker 3: I think people want to change.
- 6:08Speaker 6: I think it's going to happen.
- 6:10Speaker 1: It could seem like it's not possible, but I think
- 6:13Speaker 1: if people, you know, come together and try to, like,
- 6:16Speaker 1: push for change.
- 6:16Speaker 5: It could happen.
- 6:17Speaker 1: A lot of our family members, we encourage them to register.
- 6:20Speaker 2: We have three that we're attempting to register before October.
- 6:26Speaker 3: 5th.
- 6:27Speaker 4: That last couple there, the woman who's speaking on camera,
- 6:30Speaker 4: she's a resident. Her wife is a citizen and a voter,
- 6:33Speaker 4: and they were both very fired up. So I spoke
- 6:36Speaker 4: to those folks, Tori, but I want to be honest.
- 6:38Speaker 4: I spoke to a lot of Texans who do not
- 6:40Speaker 4: know that there's an election underway. And it was a
- 6:43Speaker 4: reminder that like we here at MSNOW may have been
- 6:45Speaker 4: talking about this election since January, but there are a
- 6:48Speaker 4: lot of folks in Texas who are going to be
- 6:49Speaker 4: tuning in for the first time. The campaigns will tell
- 6:52Speaker 4: you they know that they're not only making a closing
- 6:55Speaker 4: argument here. They are introducing themselves to a lot of voters.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Talk to me about the work that remains to be
- 7:01Speaker 4: done in the next 30 plus days.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Oh, my goodness. 30 plus days. There is a lot
- 7:07Speaker 5: of work to be done. Texas is a massive state,
- 7:09Speaker 5: as everyone knows, 254 counties. That's a lot of ears
- 7:13Speaker 5: to reach in a very short amount of time. And
- 7:15Speaker 5: I will tell you, I was in the battleground state
- 7:18Speaker 5: of Arizona in 2024. And the second I got off
- 7:21Speaker 5: the plane and on every neighborhood I went in door knocking,
- 7:24Speaker 5: I was geo-targeted. I was geo-fenced. I was communicated with.
- 7:28Speaker 5: I saw billboards. I saw signs. I was like, oh,
- 7:30Speaker 5: this is saturation. Texas has yet to hit that sort
- 7:34Speaker 5: of saturation point just because of the massive scale. So
- 7:38Speaker 5: Every single human who is listening to this, who has
- 7:41Speaker 5: a stake in this, who cares about change in Texas,
- 7:44Speaker 5: who is ready to see a new senator, has it
- 7:48Speaker 5: on their shoulders to talk to their friends, talk to
- 7:50Speaker 5: their neighbors, get online, just do. I mean, really and truly,
- 7:55Speaker 5: James Tallarico has run an A-plus race in a modern
- 7:58Speaker 5: media environment where he's talking to podcasters and creators and
- 8:02Speaker 5: media and neighborhoods and pastors, right? Like he's going old
- 8:06Speaker 5: school too. So He's doing the work. Gina has to
- 8:10Speaker 5: continue to do the work. I think she's broken kind
- 8:12Speaker 5: of late. I think for a very long time in
- 8:14Speaker 5: this particular race, it was a little sleepy. It just
- 8:17Speaker 5: sort of seemed inevitable that Greg Abbott would hold on
- 8:21Speaker 5: to that decade plus hold he's had on the governor's mansion.
- 8:24Speaker 5: And she's breaking through. So more is more. They've got
- 8:28Speaker 5: to get out everywhere.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Hey, it's me, Rachel Maddow. If you like the story
- 8:31Speaker 3: you just watched, you should know about a new way
