Transcript
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: Okay, thanks so much for taking time out to do this interview.
- 0:07SPEAKER_01: I've never I've heard your voice tons and tons from your podcast and other places, but we've never actually had a call.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: So this is a lot of fun.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's great to see you.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for inviting me on.
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: So in the previous interview, by the time this airs, I will have done an interview with uh JLD talking about uh this amazing book, The Common Path to Uncommon Success.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: And he shared some principles of the book that can apply to writers and creatives and artists.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: But I thought it would be fun to do a behind-the-scenes kind of interview with you because obviously you're very, very involved in all aspects of this book and everything that you're doing with EOF, and you have your own things going on, which we'll get to in a little bit with your Ditch Busy podcast.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: So you have our hands in a lot of things.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: So it's exciting to get to pick your brain just a little bit with all this stuff.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, I love sharing the behind-the-scenes type of stuff because that's like my zone.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: I really geek out on systems and organization and planning and communication and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: So happy to share.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: So can you first of all share what is the overall goal of this book launch?
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Obviously, getting a book out there is has lots of value in itself.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: But what kinds of immeasurable things do you want to accomplish with this particular book launch?
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, in terms of metrics and tracking a goal, right now in the pre-order stage, which is what we're in right now, um the book officially launches March 23rd.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: So in the pre-order stage, um, part of our time was focused fully on bulk orders.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: So we have bulk order opportunities where you can order multiple copies of the book, starting at just 12 books, all the way up to like 1,500 books.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Um, and those packages come with reward experiences, is what we're calling them.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: So you're not just bulk ordering the book, you're getting uh additional rewards or bonuses that come along with that.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: So um some of the packages include one-on-one time with John.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Some of the packages include a six-month mastermind that we're going to be um hosting.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: So um, for part of the time, our focus was fully on that.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: So the goal was really about like getting as many bulk orders as we could.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Um, more recently, as we approach the launch, get closer to that, our focus has shifted to pre-orders and um those individual pre-orders that we get via like Amazon or Barnes and Noble.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, really, like the big driver is Amazon.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Um, and of course, that's because uh the higher that we can rank in Amazon and the more numbers that we can get there, the better our visibility, the more likely Amazon will be to promote us.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Um, and as we reach like certain levels of those uh numbers of orders, um, like last week we hit number one bestseller in Amazon, which was really awesome to see.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Um, and it really helps when you kind of see like your efforts pay off with like little uh tokens like that, if you will.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: But of course, overall, to your point, I mean, our goal with this book is to get it into the hands of as many people as possible, um, with the hope that the message that John shares and the roadmap that he provides will really help more people obtain this level of financial freedom and fulfillment that we've been so lucky to experience ourselves, something that I didn't even know was possible 10 years ago.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Um, and I know both of us are just really passionate about sharing that with people as an option for a way that you can live your life to set yourself and your family up for a future where you have the freedom to do what you want with your time, go where you want with your family, with your friends, with loved ones.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Um, really spend your time the way that you want to spend it so that every day you're excited to get out of bed and you know, you're excited about the trips and the things that you're able to plan because you have that freedom.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Man, I love that.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: And I I cannot wait to read the book.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, of course, I don't have it yet, but I've pre-ordered it.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Now I do want to ask about the bonuses.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Yes, totally my pleasure.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: And where I heard about this, by the way, for some reason I had I had missed this.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Um, but JLD did an interview with Nick Pavlitas, my ghostwriting mentor, in his uh ghostwriter growth group on Facebook.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: And Nick has been a massive help to me as I've gotten into ghostwriting the last year or two.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: And so I happened to see that and caught the interview, and I was like, oh my gosh, he's got a new book out.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: I've got to totally get this.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Now, what was so shocking is that I signed up for the bonuses and then or ordered the book on Amazon, send in the receipt and all that, all that stuff.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: And then last week I got this box in the mail of these three amazing books.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: Of course, I knew they were coming, but it was my wife was there as I was opening up this box, and it was your two uh hardbound journals and then your podcast journal, which is this super high quality journal.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: And I'm just going, I I literally said to her, they've they're taking like a huge loss on this.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: This is insane.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Like, who who gives away three super expensive books in exchange for pre-ordering one book?
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: And so I want to ask about your thought process and and all that, because I've never seen anybody do that.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Like your bonuses are stunning with this.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thanks for that.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: I mentioned when I was talking about the bulk orders that we have those reward experiences, but to your point, we also have five bonuses set up just for pre-ordering the book.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: So even just one individual pre-order on Amazon or Barnes and Noble or any of the um channels that we have on our pre-order page, you do get access to those five bonuses, one of which you just uh mentioned our three journals.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: So if you're in the US, we'll ship you the physical copies.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: If you're outside the US, we do digital packs, which are like downloadable and fillable PDFs, um, the Kindle version, et cetera.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Um, really, when we were setting up these bonuses, we just wanted one, we wanted to over-deliver our appreciation for people supporting this, which not only gets it into their hands, but then helps us get it into the hands of more people because of the awareness and the reach that we gain.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Um, that's a huge thing for us.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: So to show our appreciation, to make it a no-brainer for people to do that, we really wanted to provide something that we knew was going to be impactful and that was perhaps a bit different from the types of bonuses that you typically see when people offer like bonuses for ordering something.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Usually it's like access to something digital or um, which is great.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Like those are awesome bonuses too.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: But we found since we launched those journals, the Freedom Journal in 2016, the Mastery Journal in 2017, the podcast journal in 2018, is um the impact that something physical that people are actually holding in their hands, what that can do for encouragement, motivation, drive, accountability.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Um we've just heard from thousands of people who have used these journals, the type of impact that that's had in helping them reach their goal and helping them become more productive and helping them launch their podcast.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Like oftentimes it's not really so much about like people doing the work, it's that they don't know what to do.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: They don't know which step to take first, they don't know which step to take next.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: And that can be really paralyzing.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: That can cause you to say, like, I'll wait another day.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Like maybe another day is going to be the right time to start, right?
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Um, but with these journals, we know that we can help people get past that.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: So when we were just thinking about what's something, what's like one of the most impactful bonuses that we can give away?
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: That yes, we're losing money on it, but we know the impact can be so huge.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: And that was it.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: And we thought not only will we be helping people get past that, but of course, the more hands that we can get the journals into, the better as well, because that's spreading our brand, that's spreading our mission, and um, you know, the reach continues to grow.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Well, I I love it.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: I'm just blown away by this.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: I've never seen anybody do this.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: So if your goal was to do something that has never been seen, you have completely achieved that you have like set the new standard for a book launch.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Yay! I love to hear that.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Well, the cool thing, and I want to want to follow up that question with this one, is I'm I'm thinking through this, of course, as a um as a reader and as a client slash customer, because I've purchased the book and I'm getting this stuff in the mail.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: But I'm already I'm also thinking of this from the perspective of how do I want to do my future book launches and the people that I'm working with?
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: How do I want to help them do that?
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: And what this has done for me emotionally is now I'm like, oh my gosh, I'm a massive, I mean, I was already a massive fan, but now I'm a whatever the term is for, an even more massive fan because you've gone just above and beyond.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: So how does over-delivering in your book launch process, how does that set up the relationship with that person for future potential interactions like masterminds or courses or other kinds of things that you might offer?
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Definitely.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, I think a big part of it is reciprocity.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Um, the more that we can give, the more um people will want to give back in whatever way they can.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: And sometimes that might be sharing the book.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Sometimes that might be telling a friend about, you know, one of our online courses.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Um, and sometimes it might be them deciding like, hey, these people are like really doing some great things.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: They care about my success.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: They're sending me hardcover journals, like they want me to succeed.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: I want more of that.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: So it might be, like you said, them joining maybe a future mastermind, maybe a future event of ours.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Um, and that is, I mean, something that is really like true to myself and how I like to run our business and what we hear from people a lot.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: And I don't want this to come across in like a braggy way, don't mean it like that.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Um, but John and I don't put on fronts like who we are online and what we put out there, and when we send hardcover journals and everything that I'm saying in this interview, like I'd be saying this to you the exact same way if we were offline, like hanging out in our living room.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, I feel like there's also a level of like there's maybe some hesitancy in the online space for from people having past experiences that were maybe like less than ideal with um businesses that they've either joined courses for before or they've started following them and they looked at them as mentors until they met them in person and then things changed or whatever might have happened, whatever the situation might have been.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Our goal is always to like, how can we overdeliver to prove to people that we're in it for them?
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: And then, like, once that happens, be able to show them that like we're legit and that we are for real when we extend these offers and when we say these things.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I think that's another part of it.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you have to go above and beyond and do things that other people aren't willing to do in order to create that relationship or to create that connection.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: And I feel like this is a way that John and I have found that has worked for us in the past.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Like if we can show people that we're in it for them in a big way and then continue to prove that to them over time, everybody wins.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: I'm like I said, even if it's somebody just sharing our content with a friend of theirs, if it means them having one of their friends join one of our programs, or if it means them joining one of our programs, like it's a win for everyone involved.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: Well, I think it's pretty clear if anybody listens to to yours or John's podcasts.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: I don't know how anybody could think like these guys are not completely genuine.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: Um, because your heart just comes through in everything that you do, you know.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: And I I've listened to to your stuff over the years, and um you just approach things very differently.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: And like you said, you come across in a very genuine way.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: And I always have gotten the sense of, you know, neither one of you are trying to like put on this kind of podcaster show, kind of you know what I mean?
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Uh a lot of times in the podcast world, particularly, it's like it's very easy to kind of pretend you're somebody that you're not.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: So I've always appreciated the fact that I the sense I always get is man, these are these are guys I would just love to hang out with.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: And um even though you're obviously you've been very successful, you have a huge platform.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: Um, I just love the way that you approach your business, and that really has coming uh that really has come through in this book launch as well, which I appreciate.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Well, I appreciate you expressing that.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: Now I do want to ask kind of a book geeky question because uh I'm a book geek and a writing nerd and all that stuff.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: I'm curious about your decision to go with HarperCollins' leadership as a publisher for this particular book as opposed to doing independent publishing, which I I believe you did with your journals, correct?
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: So what was the strategic decision in going that route as opposed to independent publishing?
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: So there's a couple things.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: One, it's something that we've never done before.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Um, and in that respect, you know, we're always looking to continue to grow and learn new things and put ourselves in situations that are uncomfortable at times.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: And this is certainly one of those situations.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: You know, the traditional publishing world is brand new to us.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: We have not traditionally published a book before.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Um, as you said, all of our journals have been self-published.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: We also have books on the Kindle Direct platform that have been like self-published books that we've done in the past.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: Um, so this is kind of like uncharted territory that um was definitely something we were interested in experiencing and um kind of going through that process.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, we've learned so much, so much that we're excited to share after everything wraps uh about how the traditional publishing world works.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: At the same time, and this kind of goes back to our goal with the book is like, how can we get this book into the hands of as many people as possible?
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: And going with Harbor Collins is certainly helping us do that.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Um, the connections that we get through it, uh, being able to get onto platforms that maybe we wouldn't have gone too length to get onto by ourselves.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: And um, just the overall reach and potential that we have to reach people who otherwise probably never would have found out about us.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, even Kent, were you on our AMA the other night?
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: One of our bonuses was that AMA were you able to attend?
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: No, I was so bummed I wasn't able to attend that one live.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Well, we have the recording um available for you if you want to check it out.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: But something that was so cool about that AMA is there were so many people on live who had no idea who John and I were.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: They'd never heard of Entrepreneurs on Fire before.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: They did not know who John was, they did not know who I was.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Um, and that was a really cool moment because it proved to us that this is exposing us to a potentially whole new audience.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: And, you know, if we just were to self-publish and continue to put this out through our own channels where everybody already knows us, that would be amazing and we'd be really happy to do that.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: But going this route is allowing us to do much more than that.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: That totally makes sense.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: That really does.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: And I guess what whatever route you decide to choose for publishing, there's there's pros and cons to every potentially pros and cons to every approach.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: And you're giving up some things, but you're gaining some things.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: And the cool thing is that we have options nowadays, which you know, 50 years ago, there really weren't any options.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: So we're pretty fortunate to live in the time that we do.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Agreed.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: One of the things that I do want to ask you about as well, speaking of your journals, because I'm a massive fan of these journals, particularly the podcast journal, because it is uh again, I'm kind of a book nerd, so I just love how it's like a leather feel, and the interior is just designed so well, and it's so obvious that you guys have put your heart and soul into these books.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: As you're you're putting together kind of a deluxe book like that that is like a leather bound or really nice hardback edition.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: There's I don't know what you call it, the the gold, the edges of the pages are like gold and silver and stuff.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: How do you determine how to actually manufacture that?
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Do you just talk to a bunch of different printers and kind of work through the details and the manufacturing process and so forth?
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: That's definitely one route that you can go.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Um, we were very blessed to have like this super connection kind of out of nowhere when John was working first starting to work on the Freedom Journal.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Um, he had an interview with a gentleman named Richie Norton, who runs a company called Product.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: So Proud and Product put together, Product.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: And that's what his company does is they source everything for you.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: They go out and they find the manufacturer, um, they research the materials, they give you options, they talk about colors, they literally from start to finish take care of everything for you.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: And so Richie and his team over at Product are the ones that made the Freedom Journal, the Mastery Journal, and the Podcast Journal what they are.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Like it was a hundred percent them working with warehouses.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Um, and they work uh with a lot of warehouses in China.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: So they're actually taking trips over there, like feeling these materials themselves, sending us videos.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, we've gotten to know a lot of people in the warehouse, like send videos back and forth and chat, and it's been a really cool experience.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: So you can absolutely go the route of sourcing your own materials and doing that research and potentially going US-based if you wanted to do that.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: Um, we've worked with Richie and his team and had nothing but incredible experiences with them.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: I'm so happy I asked that question because I had no idea that was that was even an option to do that.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna check that out for sure.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's I mean, it's really helpful because when you're creating something, all the work that goes into the creation of it and the format and the layout and the content and the marketing aspects and all of that, and then you add to that all of the manufacturing and the materials and all it like it becomes such a massive project.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: So to be able to count on someone else's team to take care of that for you was a huge win for us.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: Now I know our time is winding down here in the next few minutes, but I do want to make sure and ask about your amazing.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: This this is your newest podcast, correct?
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: The Ditch Busy Podcast.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: This is an amazing show, and I'm so glad that you have created this podcast.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: I absolutely love it, and I've learned so much already.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: But but I want to give you a chance, uh, if you would, to just share a little bit about what this podcast is about and what listeners can learn from it.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thank you so much.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: I'm so happy that you're enjoying it.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Um, I launched Ditch Busy beginning of 2020, and my goal was to help people first identify and then improve their relationship with time management.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Um, I think that thinking of your relationship with time management isn't something that people do often.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: They just think time management is like this thing, and they're probably not feeling super confident about how good they are with time management.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: And I've just seen so repetitively that overwhelm and frustration with lack of progress and never feeling like you have enough time to do the things that you're actually passionate about was such a recurring um, you know, roadblock for entrepreneurs.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: And so I thought it's kind of all the things that I'm really obsessed with.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: And so why not create a show around it where I can do succinct, like eight to 12 minute episodes, really diving deep into one time management hack or productivity hack to help people understand that it's not rocket science, that you can manage your time very effectively without being a pro at anything related to time management or productivity, that it's really about putting simple habits in place and catching yourself when you start to go off track or when you get frustrated, or any number of things that can derail us from doing what we actually intend to do.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: And that if we can consciously make these choices every single day, that all of that will be helping lead us to the act to the day-to-day life that we want to live versus living in frustration and that hamster wheel of like waking up and having more and more tasks and more to do and always feeling busy.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: So that was my whole goal is to help people ditch busy.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: I get the sense in your show that uh that you're teaching us things that you're learning as you go because you're juggling multiple podcasts, uh, a complex business with lots of different pieces going on.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: So that's what I appreciate about it is I never get the sense of, okay, here's Kate telling us how she's figured out all these things years ago.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: I really get the sense of she's telling us things that she's learning and giving us tips.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: And I just I love that because you do have a very busy life.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: And so you're actually living this stuff out as you're teaching it to us.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thank you for that.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: There have been so countless times that I've been out on a walk or kind of been reflecting on my day and just think, man, I got to record an episode about this because I feel like I just lived through like 17 lessons of how I could have done this better.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 20:51unknown: Yeah.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: Kate, this has been an absolute blast.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: I want to make sure that listeners know where they can find out all about all the cool stuff that you and JLD are doing, as well, but and most importantly, how can they pre-order the common path to uncommon success book?
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, awesome.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: Everything John and I do is under one umbrella over at eofire.com.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: And if anyone's interested in checking out the pre-order for the common path to uncommon success, it's over at uncommonsuccessbook.com.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: I love it.
