- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Andrew Mcgibbon for September 27th.
- 0:12Today is National Chocolate Milk Day, and if that doesn't
- 0:16instantly transport you back to childhood, you might need to
- 0:19check and see if you actually had a childhood.
- 0:22There is something universally comforting about chocolate milk
- 0:25that transcends age, culture, and sophistication levels.
- 0:30This beloved beverage has a surprisingly rich story.
- 0:33While we enjoy it in school cafeterias and convenience
- 0:35stores today, chocolate milk's origin traces itself back to the
- 0:401400s in Jamaica, where people were drinking hot beverages made
- 0:45of cocoa, milk, and cinnamon. The drink evolved over
- 0:49centuries, and by the 1800s it had become a popular treat that
- 0:54could be enjoyed both hot and cold.
- 0:58What makes chocolate milk special isn't just its taste,
- 1:01it's the memories it carries. It's the drink that made
- 1:04vegetables bearable, that sealed lunchbox trades, and that
- 1:09somehow made everything better when we were feeling down.
- 1:13National Chocolate Milk Day reminds us that some of life's
- 1:15greatest pleasures are also its simplest ones.
- 1:20Which brings us to today's quote from writer Roald Dahl, who once
- 1:24said a little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest
- 1:29man. Dahl's observation captures
- 1:32something essential about chocolate milk, and why National
- 1:36Chocolate Milk Day matters more than you might think.
- 1:39In our serious, grown up world of responsibilities and
- 1:43deadlines, chocolate milk represents a delicious form of
- 1:47nonsense. And that's exactly what makes it
- 1:49valuable. Think about it.
- 1:52Chocolate milk is essentially regular milk's fun, silly
- 1:55cousin. It serves no practical purpose
- 1:59that regular milk couldn't handle, but it brings joy,
- 2:03nostalgia, and a touch of sweetness to ordinary moments.
- 2:07It's liquid childhood in a glass, a reminder that not
- 2:11everything in life needs to be practical or sophisticated to be
- 2:14wonderful. Dahl understood that wisdom
- 2:17isn't just about making serious decisions and solving complex
- 2:20problems. True wisdom includes knowing
- 2:23when to embrace the silly, the playful, the seemingly
- 2:27unnecessary things that make life more delightful.
- 2:31The wisest people are those who can appreciate both the board
- 2:34meeting and a mustache made of chocolate milk foam.
- 2:40When we dismiss simple pleasures like chocolate milk as childish,
- 2:44we're forgetting that the capacity for joy and wonder is
- 2:47one of our most valuable human traits, regardless of our age.
- 2:52I had chocolate milk recently and it actually did bring back
- 2:55some memories from when I used to drink a lot of chocolate
- 2:57milk. I also used to enjoy drinking
- 3:00Tang and peanuts mixed with raisins and chocolate chips.
- 3:04We ate a lot of those all the time with our quick chocolate
- 3:08milk. So today, think about Dahl's
- 3:12wisdom regarding the value of nonsense.
- 3:15What simple pleasures have you dismissed as childish or
- 3:18impractical? Maybe today's the day to order
- 3:21chocolate milk with your lunch. Maybe it's the day to skip
- 3:25instead of walk, to sing in the car, or to do something small
- 3:31and silly that makes you smile. Maybe it's simply remembering
- 3:34that the capacity for delight is not something you outgrow, it's
- 3:38something you choose to maintain.
- 3:41The wisest people know that life needs both death and lightness,
- 3:45both seriousness and silliness, both practical nutrition and
- 3:50chocolate milk. That's going to do it.
- 3:52For today, I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be
- 3:56back. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:01with another daily quote.
