- 0:43Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast with my partner.
- 0:48Brian siglo, I am Curtis Wilson. And tonight, folks, we have a
- 0:56very special guest joining up to talk some hokey football and
- 1:00other things in between. We were looking a few weeks ago
- 1:05and we're like we need somebody who's a Virginia Tech football
- 1:08fan. We need somebody who's an alumni
- 1:13of the school. We need somebody who donates his
- 1:17hard-earned money. We need somebody who sponsors
- 1:21Athletics and we need somebody who lives and works in
- 1:25Blacksburg. And there's only one in Bryan.
- 1:29I'll let you introduce him King. Jeremy counts of Blacksburg
- 1:34ladies and gentlemen. Jeremy how the hell are you man?
- 1:37Hey, hey, The conference, we had the
- 2:01signing day press conference, and now we're sitting here,
- 2:05we're officially fully into transfer portal season, so we've
- 2:11kind of lived an entire like offseason in about 3 days here.
- 2:15So I think everybody's stress levels a little high right now.
- 2:19Oh yeah about that and buying a house this week.
- 2:22So that's fucking great. We've got all of this bullshit
- 2:27going down and it's a roller coaster.
- 2:29It is a shit roller coaster and it has went off the fucking
- 2:33rails. It is like whenever that person
- 2:34got launched from a fucking slingshot, in Pigeon Forge onto
- 2:37the highway, that's what I feel like right now because it is all
- 2:42over the goddamn Place. Lazy Hillman Hokie nation is now
- 2:47the person they got launched in The Pigeon Forge Highway, we are
- 2:52scattered on the concrete. We are getting run over by
- 2:58rednecks. Coming from everywhere to have a
- 3:01great time. In Pigeon.
- 3:02Forge, I love you. Billy Mecca.
- 3:05It's my me to known coasters are the best.
- 3:08Yeah, dude, I'm going to Gatlinburg fucking hillbilly.
- 3:11Nigga, like me and Emily. I'm are there.
- 3:15Oh, yes. Yeah.
- 3:17Technically Marnie, who is my best friend.
- 3:18Always, Said he could marry me. He wasn't able to marry us
- 3:21because of Virginia walls are weird because he lived in
- 3:23Kentucky right now. Like that's where he lives.
- 3:26So he couldn't technically Marius in Virginia because our
- 3:29laws are dumb. And so me and Emily went, we got
- 3:33we got redneck hitch in Gatlinburg, a Tobar Gatlinburg
- 3:37and went down in the moonshot afterwards.
- 3:39So, yeah, that was great. So, we were married for like a
- 3:42week before. We were like and the ceremony
- 3:46and stuff. Okay.
- 3:47Okay. It's hilarious though that
- 3:51Jeremy talks about his wife because, you know, we started
- 3:54this podcast and not long back after, you know, Jeremy would
- 3:57sons of Saturday and some other guys, you start listening up and
- 4:00you slide into our DM's with some shit in there.
- 4:04You did wider out in. It was very nice, but then, all
- 4:07of a sudden, you know, things here and there and won't Sunday
- 4:10morning. He pops us a picture of
- 4:13something he's doing with his wife.
- 4:15And I sit there and I'm like holy shit this girl looks so
- 4:21fucking familiar talk to Jeremy but hey Jeremy is your
- 4:25girlfriend Virginia he's like yeah listen man I know this is
- 4:30really random. She might change from Halifax
- 4:33County and Jeremy. She is can confirm, he was born
- 4:39and raised in Halifax County and I'm sitting here.
- 4:41I'm like Jeremy that's where me and Brian grew up.
- 4:44How, you know, how old is your wife?
- 4:46He tells how she is, we're not going to mention that because
- 4:48she's not going to kick me whenever she sees me in the near
- 4:51future in Blacksburg 33, you said it.
- 4:56Not a throw off the hook. So where is she?
- 5:01But she was in high school. And
- 5:30everybody listening. Stop pause go.
- 5:33Follow him when In Blacksburg go by the Main Street Pharmacy.
- 5:36Give him a visit during game days.
- 5:38I'm sure he's got a bunch of stuff in there.
- 5:40You need for after the game. Oh yeah.
- 5:45I probably won't be there on game day, someone will be the
- 5:50cold Jeremy, the extreme rational fan like you're
- 5:53rational when you're come to your takes, but you're very
- 5:56extreme with how you put those takes out there.
- 5:59I'm very logical but I'm also really passionate in my lat if
- 6:04that makes sense. He's absolutely - lately.
- 6:37Wake Forest off. We usually have a loss like that
- 6:40every year. I was just it up to hey it's us.
- 6:43It fucking happens. Whatever we're moving on and
- 6:47that was how I felt and then goddamn Liberty happened,
- 6:52fucking Liberty happened and that.
- 6:55Oh my God, that was a shit show, like even getting into patient
- 7:01and been in the game with us even getting to the stupid
- 7:04timeout. And the stupid defensiveness up
- 7:09at the end of the day game even without that, it should not have
- 7:13been that close. And I know I Super Bowl.
- 7:15They were coming out and they were ready for it.
- 7:17You have to win those games. These are games, you have to
- 7:20get, and I was around for, you know, the JMU lost back in the
- 7:25day. I was around for all that
- 7:26bullshit. We cannot afford to have losses
- 7:30like that, right now. We're trying to reprogram.
- 7:34Yep. Yep.
- 7:35If Was, you know, you know, talking about JMU at the time,
- 7:39we could recover from a loss like that both on the recruiting
- 7:43front, you know, rallying the next reference here.
- 7:46Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:47You can recover from that. It's very hard to recover from
- 7:50that when you're already, treading water in the ACC.
- 7:53And that's, that's where the Hokies are right now.
- 7:55They're treading water in the ACC treading water, will we see?
- 7:58And then the next week, they play their nuts off against
- 8:02Miami and then everybody forgets how to play in the fourth
- 8:04quarter. God, I was at that game.
- 8:07I'm in felt the entire game. Felt like we were going to win
- 8:10that game and I was like, you know what, you know, fuck the
- 8:14Livery. At least we're going to be Miami
- 8:16and we're going to go on we're gonna fucking beat UVA and I was
- 8:18like it's gonna be all right? And then it just stops.
- 8:24It's like anytime it comes down to us having to score some
- 8:27points at the end. We just can't seem to fucking do
- 8:31it. No attention.
- 8:32I was full force that day. I brought out the crown and the
- 8:36Myrtle and everything. The turn is the turnover expert.
- 8:39Alleged promise, I'll never break out again, because they
- 8:43game because it the entire time, it felt like we were winning.
- 8:47Yeah, I felt like we were going to win.
- 8:49We're going to right the wrong, but the fourth quarter happened
- 8:52and we well, we suck the fat one.
- 8:54I'm going to just add that the next week hit and that was I was
- 9:01on here. Liberty was the end for me for
- 9:02Coach? Like, I'm over you like you?
- 9:06When people are telling me who went to that game like they
- 9:09couldn't get the guys up. Yeah.
- 9:11No, you can't get the guys up to a team, you should smash.
- 9:15Yeah, you and that is on your entire coaching staff.
- 9:19So yeah. Well with Liberty, the pit game.
- 9:23That's what happened. Really really.
- 9:24That was my Rubicon. I was blacked out.
- 9:36Tina's house. And we're sitting there, and I'm
- 9:39downstairs, I'm with a bunch of college students, down there and
- 9:42Reggie and frankenteen and where I'll watch a ballgame and by the
- 9:45second half when they start pulling away, I just, I'm just
- 9:49going at it. I finish a fifth of jmo and then
- 9:53I seen Richie and he brings me a bottle Buffalo Trace.
- 9:55So I'm just taking pulls on Buffalo Trace.
- 9:57I've got these poor kids in there and I'm just like yelling
- 10:01this is why y'all gotta donate to the Hokey Club.
- 10:35Here. Because that night, that was
- 10:38bronze Rubicon. So that it 11:00, I put the kids
- 10:42to bed, he puts the kids to bed, we put two wives to bed, and I'm
- 10:45sitting here, he's pounding on Pam's, and I'm sitting here and
- 10:49I'm pouring shots and he looked. And he's like, what the fuck you
- 10:52doing. I'm like, I don't know what else
- 10:54to do and I know you're supposed to, I don't drink, like, I used
- 11:04to About two to three shots and bring about eight beers.
- 11:08Yeah. Whoo.
- 11:10Let's just say when my four-year-old three-year-old
- 11:12woke up at 6:30, the next morning, my wife is pregnant.
- 11:16I had to go. I was just glad she didn't know.
- 11:20Hope she doesn't listen. So tomorrow's.
- 11:22Don't okay, so that game happens.
- 11:27You get blackout. We get hammered late-night
- 11:30recording podcasts in the Clemson game.
- 11:32When we have a week off, then Clemson happens.
- 11:36And for three quarters of Clemson.
- 11:37It was like, okay. Absolutely, we need to get to
- 12:18the point where we're putting the same team on the field every
- 12:21week. Yes.
- 12:22Because right now I have no idea what team is going to come out
- 12:26week to week. And generally what I expect is
- 12:29we're going to play exactly to whatever our damn competition is
- 12:32now. And you all know me.
- 12:34I actually love food. Like I thought food was a great
- 12:37hire. I was all for the extension
- 12:40through are too rough or Seasons.
- 12:42It was like okay we pretty much got a delayed rebuild, we do.
- 12:45This is going to happen through this.
- 12:48Whenever we had some struggles, I was like, you know, it's
- 12:50covid. It's whatever.
- 12:51It's, you know, we're going to get through this, but it is just
- 12:55it's too much. This is too much.
- 12:59This season was too much and to make those calls and This and I
- 13:06hate the people that are just like, oh well, it's just a
- 13:09football game. It's just what they don't
- 13:12fucking have a goddamn clue. This isn't just a football game.
- 13:16This program is so huge to the economy here in Blacksburg and I
- 13:21represent these businesses. I do, I go, I volunteer my time
- 13:25on boards for these businesses, I do everything I can for this
- 13:28community and I whenever I feel like like, we're not being
- 13:33heard, or we're not like people are not Hearing about it, it
- 13:36upsets me because the better this team does, the better it is
- 13:40for the economy better, it is for the school, better is for
- 13:44our culture. And I think we're losing sight
- 13:46of our culture and I think our cultural decline started in
- 13:492007. Whenever Jim Weaver made the
- 13:52huge fuck up of getting rid of stick it in, that was just a
- 13:56huge fuck you, too. Virginia Tech game, day,
- 13:58culture, and downhill, and they've been cracking down on it
- 14:03forever, because art everyone goes on About SEC tailgates.
- 14:06This is that give me a fucking game day in Blacksburg any
- 14:10fucking day. And back in the day it was my
- 14:13goddamn wild. That's what people fucking
- 14:16understand and people are losing side of that.
- 14:20They're losing sight of what made us special.
- 14:22And it's heartbreaking for me to see because they don't just they
- 14:26don't get it. And it's sad and I'm fucking
- 14:30done with it. Yeah, those are.
- 14:33Haven't lived in those who didn't go through that.
- 14:35Read and see what what it was about.
- 14:38Those teams were about and what tailgating there was about and
- 14:42what the just the whole game day atmosphere that you're talking
- 14:45about like electric if it's fun when you're in the stadium.
- 14:51Like it's not just about running out and jump into salmon.
- 14:55It was not looking quarters of that shit.
- 14:57Yeah, I don't I feel like we've lost some of that to it.
- 15:00Yeah, it used to be for fucking quarters of it used to be My
- 15:05first game was 03. My first game was 03 UCF Labor
- 15:09Day weekend, 330 kit. That's got like it's still
- 15:13ingrained in my mind. Big man's over here.
- 15:15Was 2002 Rutgers, right? Yes sir, we remember that 17 and
- 15:2118 years gone by, and when you walked into we were, we were on
- 15:25prices for because that's where I guys tailgated, that's where
- 15:28our buddies. Who went to Tech tailgate,
- 15:29that's where we were before, we could go downtown.
- 15:34No, I never had a fake ID, I just dealt with what I dealt
- 15:37with sitting there in your parting, you're having fun,
- 15:42you're meeting people left and right, and you feel the energy,
- 15:45and then all of a sudden, whatever time kickoff was me and
- 15:49Brandon go there, but whoever did they were like time to go,
- 15:53gotta walk. Gotta walk to get to the stadium
- 15:56to get him. Yep.
- 15:58And as you started going, it was like this flood.
- 16:02It was the for cause you saw the peel.
- 16:04The first time I went, it was just like, like, I kind of get
- 16:07this feeling like, okay, every like everybody knows we're going
- 16:11to the stadium, you get in, you jump for the first time.
- 16:15You feel it that game, though, going into the third and fourth
- 16:19quarters tackles easily, win the game.
- 16:22Pit Mill was electric. It still was this hostility like
- 16:28we want to beat your fucking brains in.
- 16:31Yes, you by 50 and as You stated the Germany as we got into the
- 16:36ACC as 2007. They take stick it in a way.
- 16:39It's like we got less and less nasty.
- 16:44Yes we did. Unfortunately what happened was
- 16:482007 was Russ for us, we came out and we had the shooting that
- 16:56happened and then that happened and that was used against us -
- 17:04Only four years in recruiting and everything else that
- 17:08happened and then we go along and you know, they're taking
- 17:12away, stick it in because their words are huge.
- 17:17There was just this huge microscope on Blacksburg at the
- 17:19top on and they took away, stick it in because of that that was
- 17:23their call. You know, they didn't want to
- 17:25have us you know out there having fun on camera.
- 17:28God fucking forbid that and they take that away and then of
- 17:32course in 2007, all the Michael Vick stuff happened.
- 17:35Yeah. So we had Michael Vick was you
- 17:38know the the player from Virginia Tech in a lot of ways
- 17:43that of course we had like Bruce Smith and everyone from before.
- 17:46For bit, Michael Vick was like this next level Superstar.
- 17:49He was a world Superstar. Yep, you fucking dick.
- 17:53And he represented Us in. Then he went down.
- 17:56So we had all these cultural hits.
- 17:58And Jim Weaver has taken away, goddamn, stick it in right in
- 18:02the middle of all this turmoil and it was one of the worst
- 18:06decisions anyone could have ever made and it was a huge blow to
- 18:09our culture. So, we just took a lot of blows
- 18:12that year and it was, it was rough. it was it was hard to
- 18:18watch but that's 13 years ago this year and still you still
- 18:25think over the last 13 years, though, some ACC titles were won
- 18:29bowl games, were made, you know, 10-win Seasons happened and what
- 18:37probably irritates Probably you more than us is when you hear
- 18:43the freaking thing of Virginia Tech, has what third most living
- 18:48don't alumni right now. And then, someone such as
- 18:54yourself who is really looking into it like seeing the amount
- 18:58of donors in a. What you did with that Buffalo
- 19:01Trace, I hope it's stuck to some of those 18 night 21, 22
- 19:05year-old kids. Make it 25 two times a year.
- 19:23Four times a year, eight times a year, 12 times a year.
- 19:26If that's all you have great. But what where do you think that
- 19:31fucked up? Do you think that was Weaver's
- 19:33fucking Jim Weaver? That's full-on again, Weaver
- 19:36Jim, Weaver only cared about big donors.
- 19:38And That's where a good chunk of our change come from, but Jim
- 19:42Weaver left us in quite a bit of a hole because Jim Weaver to his
- 19:46credit, did give a fuck about football.
- 19:50That's all he cared about. And that's kind of why we were
- 19:53in a hole, but he also only cared about me donors.
- 19:56So he didn't have this entire, he didn't realize that there's
- 19:59an entire base that you can tap in donating and he didn't
- 20:04capitalize on the years that we were great to get us a donor
- 20:06base, to keep us there. And we were So behind we relied
- 20:12Forever on just our name to bring recruits to bring everyone
- 20:16else here and Frank's been gone for a while now.
- 20:21Yep. Yep.
- 20:22We aren't you know a perennial like ACC title container.
- 20:27We're not anymore. Well my day 10-win seasons were
- 20:31expected. Yep.
- 20:32That was that was expected. Like we were always in the
- 20:36National conversation. That's what we were used to.
- 20:39And now it's just like we don't care and I don't mind, I
- 20:45absolutely love our non-revenue Sports.
- 20:47I love all that we should be spending for that and what I
- 20:51don't like is the fact that the university is choosing not to
- 20:55fund our football program the right way.
- 20:56And I know that that's changing and may whole said it's
- 20:59changing. Everyone else has said is
- 21:00changing and we are getting more money.
- 21:03We've got more donors on board for football Improvement program
- 21:06and we did needed to need to update a lot of the facilities.
- 21:10So I understand a lot of that. But we let our fucking cash
- 21:15bail. Starve.
- 21:17In the meantime, we did not take care of our fucking cash cow or
- 21:23what are in our culture is about.
- 21:25Yep. They're all converging Tech is
- 21:29the football team that he draw. If you're not eating that, then
- 21:34you're letting other things slowly die.
- 21:36They might look like they're doing, okay?
- 21:39But they are slowly dying. Like, I love her basketball
- 21:42team. That has been absolutely
- 21:47wonderful to see Buzz. I got real mad when Buzz left,
- 21:50but I understand why Buzz laughs.
- 21:52I understand. You know, he wasn't gonna be
- 21:54here for long but I appreciate everything, but a stiff for The
- 21:57end when we found you, everybody knew we're signing an assassin
- 22:03to get our program. No, no one ever had the
- 22:08expectation. He's gonna be myself that he
- 22:13was, you know, that's come down in the last, I mean, really
- 22:25starting like late, We're just like one thing after another.
- 22:29After another, just the hits keep coming.
- 22:32It's been fucking - even the most optimistic person is like
- 22:37this ain't it the same it. Well, hold on.
- 22:40The majority of people that probably we just talked with and
- 22:45in us three talking amongst ourselves.
- 22:47Another people fans were about to win today.
- 22:49This year was going into after last year, after the end of the
- 22:53seasons, like it's going to be okay, he looks like he's
- 22:55stabilized. All season henin's.
- 23:00Coming back as quarterback. Look like the offensive lines.
- 23:02Don't look good. Didn't covid happen.
- 23:05But everybody had coded, everybody.
- 23:08This wasn't just like well state of Virginia can't do jack shit.
- 23:12No one could do jack shit, no more.
- 23:15And so we get into the season, we open up with NC State and
- 23:19it's like, okay, yeah, this is what I'm talking about.
- 23:22Braxton's gonna fucking crush them.
- 23:24It felt so good. And then like the first six
- 23:29games happened and where we're going to revert in.
- 23:32But like it's okay. This is what we expect.
- 23:34We're only going to win four of the last, you know, four of the
- 23:37last five, we're going to finish the shading three.
- 23:39We're on a good track, but then when all the other stuff start
- 23:42have, all of us, I'm not going to say we're positive or wins
- 23:45because we're not certain people who this is.
- 23:48Okay, we're doing this. No no man no dog.
- 24:00Huh. Huh?
- 24:26Famous. If the as bad as the offseason
- 24:30is, we're going to hit the portal on a few minutes.
- 24:32Here is bad as the offseason spin.
- 24:36Tennis last year's 58,000 down obviously from The Glory Days.
- 24:43When all three of us were you were going to school there.
- 24:46Me and Brian had our buddies are.
- 24:47We could get tickets to go up watching games, stay all weekend
- 24:51party. Drink we know what came down.
- 24:55It came down from 62,000 and 2017, when we were nine and four
- 25:01competing for the ACC, One games competed with Clemson that
- 25:06night, I know we lost by 14 but that game was still a
- 25:09hard-fought game 58,000 there are people within this fan base
- 25:15that they everybody's just going to come back next year.
- 25:18No they are not going to just come back.
- 25:20This one. I take care of this community.
- 25:40These other like the restaurant to the bars downtown?
- 25:43Yeah. They're not going to be able to
- 25:44fucking afford rent, like they're struggling right now
- 25:47because the covid coming to you. Give us a mediocre a season.
- 25:50Try to come back and we've lost half our fucking office to the
- 25:54goddamn transfer. You think we're going to bring
- 25:58in fans? You think we're going to get out
- 26:00of ticket packages sales that? Well we're not.
- 26:04Nope and I mean that's the big thing.
- 26:06So Let's let's look at it from just you know we're talking
- 26:11about game day, we're talking about promotional materials at
- 26:13the teens putting out, you've lost like three guys that you
- 26:16were featuring prominently on your 2020 promotion material to
- 26:19the transfer portal. Yeah that can't happen.
- 26:22No we've never had someone just start for two years straight at
- 26:29quarterback. What?
- 26:31That tell you this hour. The same starting quarterback,
- 26:40who knows? I'm not known for a while since
- 26:44Michael Brewer. Fucking no us is what we were.
- 27:12We've all those years were poverty but we're still going
- 27:16out. And I'm sitting, like number
- 27:17one, Ohio State, we were still feel the good deed.
- 27:22We thought that was fucking poverty.
- 27:24Look at this. Now, goddamn.
- 27:26Hey, we beating UVA though. Would be maybe.
- 27:30Yeah. Hey, what about?
- 27:54I don't think he's Cutthroat enough.
- 28:00I think, I think he's a guy that just likes to coach football.
- 28:07You got to be able to, you know, cut it up with the donors.
- 28:11You got to be able to cut a guy limits of.
- 28:14He's not cutting the mustard. You got to be able to engage the
- 28:17fans like this shit. You're painting is for Pierre
- 28:20P5. I feel like we're at a point now
- 28:23where you know food goes out and has a decent press conference
- 28:27and takes responsibility for what happened on the field and
- 28:30we're say, are we cleared that fucking bar?
- 28:32That's a low ass bar to clear. I like this press conference, it
- 28:36made me feel better, but But also I know that this is just
- 28:40making me feel better. That's the thing is, I was a
- 28:45fool. I think he's great and I think
- 28:47he's a hell of a coach. I think he's excellent.
- 28:48I think he's got a great offense of mine.
- 28:50I think that he is good at what he wants to do.
- 28:55Problem is, is he isn't that CEO top coach?
- 29:00It takes to run a P5 program and that is the issue.
- 29:05And whenever you got people that are underperforming, I mean you
- 29:08got to start cut. Yeah.
- 29:10Like that's that's the thing and whenever you have multiple
- 29:15reports of certain people certain coaches phoning it in
- 29:22and saying the season doesn't matter.
- 29:24It doesn't matter. Fuck him.
- 29:27Exact time for a corn. Cob of the flicker is that I'm
- 29:30not saying any names, and I'm not doing that, because who
- 29:34knows, if it is, you know, troops true.
- 29:36It's true. My thing is is whenever you have
- 29:40that happening that is a issue that is you cannot get your kids
- 29:46prepared whenever you're saying this season doesn't matter if
- 29:49fucking matter to me it fucking matters to all the fans.
- 29:53It matters to Blacksburg and baddest our economy even though
- 29:56people can't come. It's still good for our image.
- 29:59It's good for our culture, it matters.
- 30:02So when I hear those things, it makes me Furious and then I hear
- 30:06all this and then we go. To the roller coaster that has
- 30:09been happening the last few days, and it has been a
- 30:13shitstorm and I'm getting everything.
- 30:17I hear, especially leading up to it.
- 30:20It was, I mean, it was dead-on and you all, you all know my
- 30:25people as much as I do, and it was the same around town.
- 30:29It was just like coaching change, it's coming.
- 30:31This is what we're doing. I was like, all right, can I ask
- 30:34you a question Jeremy because for me, And Brian you know we're
- 30:38up here in Richmond. We went to a game last year, we
- 30:41went downtown with a sharpie and went to tots.
- 30:43We parked and media went up to lot one.
- 30:46Tailgaters from guys from back home.
- 30:48So now the first time we went in a couple years but let me ask
- 30:51this since 2018, because 20, 1927, 2017, and 2016 were
- 30:59sunshine, and Roses, we were 19 and eight and two seasons.
- 31:03You like, you're really into them.
- 31:05Like thank you. We got him for a day.
- 31:07Okay, we're going to be competing every year. 2018
- 31:13happens. What has been the mood in the
- 31:16town itself with? I'm sure, you know, alumni.
- 31:19And, you know, business owners, since that bad season, the shit
- 31:23that happened last year going up to you.
- 31:25What's been the feel inside of the Town itself.
- 31:27Bad season was written off. 2018, was written off
- 31:30completely. I mean, people are you like
- 31:33okay, this sucks but, you know, we just, we lost a lot and We
- 31:38did. I mean through both 2016, 2017
- 31:42it was we lost a lot of our tailing them and we have it
- 31:46replaced them. We had to redo a lot of things
- 31:48Jerrod going early was not great.
- 31:50Bucky orderly was not great, it's satisfactory bit.
- 31:53I really think that 2017 season could have been really special,
- 31:57I don't draw it. Especially here in more and
- 32:00more. I know Hendon who hit the
- 32:03transfer portal. I love you handy.
- 32:06You you go out. You be great somewhere else.
- 32:09I'll always root for you Gerard. He was taken such a beating in
- 32:14their scheme because we use our quarterbacks like fullbacks a
- 32:18lot. Yep.
- 32:19And he was taking a beating and that's that's a bit of an issue
- 32:25whenever you know you've got Jerrod who had a family to think
- 32:29of he went one year too early. He would stay one more year.
- 32:33His entire life would be different.
- 32:35Yeah. And we had abused Him so much
- 32:38that he felt like he had to go even though if he stayed one
- 32:41more year, it would have helped us draft rating.
- 32:44It would have helped everything. Is it working?
- 32:47He could have broken his own records Jerrod with excellent.
- 32:50It to him. He was making the right decision
- 32:52because I think he got some bad advice.
- 32:54And I think it's because he was afraid, he was going to get
- 32:56injured and that's a problem. Whenever we're having our best
- 32:59Helen afraid that, we're misusing them, and we're losing
- 33:02out on them too early and they go on.
- 33:04And I mean, these are these are people's lives.
- 33:08And they're making these decisions based on the fact that
- 33:11we may actually get them hurt. You know, maybe not run your
- 33:16quarterback until he is body is destroyed.
- 33:20Well it's I know we love are scrambling cubies here today but
- 33:24you know scramble is different than running quarterback than
- 33:26our own third nineteen exactly like we don't need to hook Ur,
- 33:34the only two quarterbacks, he was fucking behind and rushing
- 33:37with The two fucking option, quarterbacks at Army and Navy
- 33:40and it was, it wasn't a large margin.
- 33:42It was like ten carries and you're like the fucking and then
- 33:47obviously, you want to get somebody fired up.
- 33:50Hey, Jeremy asked, Brian about third and six quarterback
- 33:53Powers. Oh my fucking God.
- 33:56I'm with you. Brian dude.
- 34:07You don't know, hey, Jeremy when they do that and then they roll
- 34:10out. BJ for a 53-yard field gold.
- 34:14My my phone is going, what the fuck?
- 34:19And I'm just like, big guys. Got something to say later on
- 34:21tonight. So, okay, let's go back to black
- 34:24bird. After the Duke game. 2019 was a
- 34:28field. Not good.
- 34:31Duke game was rough. It was that's the thing as we
- 34:34were we were honoring. God, it was that was it ninety?
- 34:38Nineteen ninety nineteen. Yeah, how did you know we were
- 35:04Not much to ask like, I do businesses.
- 35:06That would sponsor that I would sponsor that I would buy all the
- 35:10food. I would do, whatever I had set
- 35:12up a desk, they could go and they can interact with the fans.
- 35:15They can sign some shit. It would be a boy.
- 35:18Last your 140, head? Out of space.
- 35:27Yeah, okay. And I said to Brian, like,
- 35:29that's the spot and you really have something cool rap along
- 35:34that. So we're sell tickets to fans to
- 35:36say, would you like to go hang out with some of the Hokey
- 35:39Legends hundred dollars? You can have an hour with a few?
- 35:43How many fans would be long ago. Exactly.
- 35:47That's what you Sergio's, a Christians Bird.
- 35:50Come on some stuff here. It's her just chomping at the
- 35:54bit to try to do something. Things.
- 35:56These are layouts man. They are missing you too hard to
- 35:59do and it feels like there's a huge disconnect with with a lot
- 36:04of things that are going on. In these obvious things that we
- 36:07can do. This is not hard.
- 36:10These are things that are suggested and they're just like,
- 36:12yeah, like the king of the good news on him and Sydney has a
- 36:19former player tailgate every week.
- 36:21For those who want to attend it Hammond fucking City division,
- 36:24three football. And it didn't If I wanted to go
- 36:27there, there's free food for me every damn Saturday, man.
- 36:31And you don't even have to do much every fucking Heaven, just
- 36:35like dishes from the dining halls and I would eat dead up,
- 36:40man. You don't have to do that much.
- 36:42Bring us some fucking fantastic Frank's London, Broil all that
- 36:45shit. That everyone's like, just like
- 36:46yes, the fucking one has one, bro.
- 36:49Bring that out. Do that at the tailgate have all
- 36:52the old hokey favors? People like me with eat that.
- 36:55Uh-oh, people love that shit. If any if you had guys like
- 37:03surge there, Dave on Morgan, you know, and to us those were big
- 37:08players. Hey to the entire other world.
- 37:12It's well tie rod was good in the Edmonds and you know Vic and
- 37:16white motherfucker like guys. Like oh god.
- 37:21Um like Sergio, I'm trying to think freaking jail Grove life.
- 37:29English boy long ago, Tweety we work with Tweety's bad.
- 37:35Awesome. Yeah but it's like those easy
- 37:44things where you ask Virginia Tech Pam, I'll ask you to
- 37:47Jeremy, you think of Alonzo Tweety?
- 37:48What's the first place? You think of My, what the named
- 37:53Alonzo Tweety? The first place.
- 37:57You think of when you think of Alonzo, Tweety, fuck, did you
- 38:00put me on the spot? Will take you back to 2011
- 38:05against Miami. The last tackle Tweety made that
- 38:11tackle. Oh fuck you man.
- 38:18Well the only reason we do like his pops.
- 38:22Yeah well that piece of There Are Places their players like
- 38:26that. Then I can tell you right?
- 38:28Like I could say who's your most fan?
- 38:30Random poke that only be random? Yeah.
- 38:33Just randomly Yeah. Nikki Giovanni.
- 38:44I love Nikki. That is hard.
- 39:03All right, I like that. He was absolutely amazing and he
- 39:16he just stuck with me and of course, we have our football
- 39:19players. I mean, Anyway.
- 39:23But yeah, it's hard to think of so many people in the league for
- 39:30my day. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:32So it's that's a grand random for us.
- 39:35Is like, okay, well they released on a practice squad for
- 39:38yaxha. Yeah, exactly.
- 39:52But it's like, how tough is it to get these guys together?
- 39:57But how tough is it for the athletic department to Simply go
- 40:00up and say let's create a physician pay.
- 40:03The person 65 thousand dollars a year.
- 40:06This is your job, you will attempt to connect with every
- 40:10hokey football alumni and you will create a vents here on
- 40:15campus during day and then create events throughout the
- 40:18state. During the year to get these
- 40:19guys together and talk and bring unwanted You know, Hank fucking
- 40:23needless jobs, they have on campus.
- 40:29I know exactly how many they have on campus.
- 40:35Don't get me wrong. I'm just saying they can afford
- 40:38a little extra for alumni. Outreach exactly diffic to our
- 40:43former players and I know Sergio would do it.
- 40:46He's dying to do it. Get Sergio to do it.
- 40:49I think Dwight would do it, but I also don't think Dwight would
- 40:52leave Leave the 757 right now. Yeah Dwight's not only do I
- 40:56don't like going on there but you know what this is not what
- 41:01he is because he is a. Why couldn't you just say will
- 41:17make serves the primary will let the white and run you said some
- 41:22pops. Is the widest, a 70 Nova,
- 41:25there's a noble, but he's got a lot of his stuff he works with
- 41:29his in 7576. He was still in the 757.
- 41:34That's why I because he had all the he has like Victory life and
- 41:37everything. Yeah, I think that that's still
- 41:40in the Senate by someone. I think he lives in Nova.
- 41:42If I'm not mistaken. God you tell me.
- 41:44You couldn't stroke him a check for 25,000 a year to do that
- 41:47part. Time to go create the gym
- 41:50because I give a thousand a month just to do that.
- 41:52Shit. That's just, what are you going
- 41:56to do? You're going to create your own,
- 41:58what is it? The 501 case is that the
- 42:00nonprofit. Let's let's create a pledge fund
- 42:03and then just let no, I'm not doing that to him.
- 42:50Literally, that's all and everyone was talking about.
- 42:52It was. Yeah, and it's not even just
- 42:56like, randos coming in. Talk to me.
- 42:58You all know like everyone in the know knew it was happening.
- 43:03Yeah, it was all over Twitter. It was all over message boards.
- 43:08It was all over Word of Mouth. Even counting all the noise out,
- 43:12everything else. Everyone in the know that you
- 43:16all know that I know. The people that aren't out there
- 43:20tweeting about this stuff or talking, they were saying the
- 43:24same thing. I was hearing the same thing
- 43:27from people, that's just what I thought we were going to do and
- 43:32don't get me wrong. I I don't want this to happen.
- 43:37No. Because I want to, to be the
- 43:40greatest coach to ever be because I think he's great coach
- 43:44and I think he is a good person. Let me know what you to succeed.
- 43:49The problem is is I don't think he can hear.
- 43:52I think it's a bad fit and I think he could go somewhere else
- 43:56and do that. But I think he came into a bad
- 43:58situation. I think he came into a place
- 44:01where the infrastructure was not there to give him the county
- 44:04needed, because I don't think he is a great recruiter, but I
- 44:08think he is an excellent coach once he has them.
- 44:12So we're essentially saying he's not a guy that can go in.
- 44:16He needs help getting them in the building.
- 44:18Once they're in the building striking, do think and do some
- 44:21action. We all see the video from
- 44:23ordered a night thing is once their players and he's coaching
- 44:26them, he's going to be a great coach.
- 44:29Ouch. Okay.
- 44:30That is what I'm saying. He's going to put them in
- 44:32situations thing is he has to know his limitations.
- 44:38Yeah, I think he's good. I think what he did in 2016 2017
- 44:42shows that he knows what he's doing.
- 44:44Yep. The problem is I think he has to
- 44:50have people around him to do a lot of things for him.
- 44:55He can't be the person to go out and sell the program.
- 44:59Even though I like him personally, Everyone likes him
- 45:02personally, I don't think he's that charismatic person to go
- 45:06out. He's the polar office owed a
- 45:08bow, but also, I think he's five billion times the coach Dabo
- 45:13could ever fucking dream of being caused a boatswain, he's
- 45:16nothing. But a fucking charlatan at
- 45:18channeling are funneling money through a goddamn truth.
- 45:21That's all he fucking is fuck. Dabo Swinney.
- 45:25And he used that shooting to fucking negatively recruit us
- 45:27and I'll take that against him too.
- 45:29Fucking die. So do you think that can sell
- 45:37the program right now that are on our staff that theft?
- 45:41Yeah I'm thinking tab J, Hamm and great.
- 45:44Both of those guys are squares Manning.
- 45:46I'm counting it. Jay Happ nasty but I was a
- 45:56freshman when he was a senior R & J.
- 46:00Hamm was, I was one of those freshman.
- 46:02I was good enough to get in the game.
- 46:04Just a little bit. This man.
- 46:07He was good. Yeah, I know what you do
- 46:09anything with him. He was a running back back then.
- 46:12Yep. Yeah it's just one of those
- 46:13freak athletes and just mad you can do anything with him.
- 46:18My cousin Rob who was also a freak athlete but he he swatted
- 46:25J. Hamm in basketball and that that
- 46:27will always stick with me. That's right.
- 46:29Was a sophomore in the time? Career highlight right there?
- 46:36I don't know. Rob had a lot of career
- 46:38highlights. That was just one of those
- 46:39things that it was fun. This have you met has been there
- 46:49and this staff honestly can't talk about that.
- 46:59Okay. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 47:05Give me a few words to what's press conference on Monday.
- 47:08She need a yeah, so it's like what we're
- 47:47trying to build a goddamn, the people who complain Shut the
- 47:55fuck up. Come on.
- 48:22Y'all. But you know what?
- 48:23Pissed me off more. Well you can't just do this and
- 48:27just tear it down. Well, you dumb fuck.
- 48:30Excuse me. If you like to it I think he's
- 48:32good. You dumb.
- 48:33Fuck you saw it just tapping in the portal.
- 48:36You have a 3 and 9 season, it's not going to be torn down.
- 48:39It's going to be burnt down and there's going to be no
- 48:42structure. Then we're going to figure out
- 48:44what the fuck, dude, he actually brought it up in the press
- 48:47conference that, well, if we get rid of him, we're not going to
- 48:51have half our players. It's my first.
- 48:53Look what's going on right now. Just say that.
- 48:56Jesus, goddamn Christ. Not the players that were
- 49:00sitting third and fourth string on the bench.
- 49:03We lost his mother. Yeah, he saw.
- 49:11What was happening on Twitter? He saw.
- 49:12What the record was this year? He saw the former players
- 49:16chiming in. He saw all of this stuff.
- 49:18This, you know, you are astray. It's just He was like, oh no.
- 49:57Fantastic job with everything he has touched except football.
- 50:04All right? That is the thing.
- 50:06That is the trade-off when it is.
- 50:08God damn good at his job. He's just I don't know what's
- 50:12going on with football. I don't know why this is
- 50:15happening. That's the thing is we got our
- 50:17great athletic athletic department overall.
- 50:22We need more funding and we destroyed the Rector and we've
- 50:28got a, we've got Foo who is a great coach.
- 50:35But we're not getting the results we want in football.
- 50:39So there are infrastructure issues, there are funding
- 50:43issues. There are a lot of issues.
- 50:46I don't give a fuck. Make it work.
- 50:50Jesus, fucking Christ. The thing that pisses me off the
- 50:54most. Yeah, I understand but I don't
- 51:11really fucking care. Is Big Ten school.
- 51:15You don't have to. You do this huge thing, we're
- 51:17bringing all in the suit. You're not going to have a bunch
- 51:19of students want to come here. If we don't have a culture who
- 51:24the fuck would want to come? And just like go to a college
- 51:28that don't have a culture, can we show Sands the enrollment
- 51:32figures going up and up and up relative to the football
- 51:36success. We can show impact That's a
- 51:47really long story. The 95 boom went to Sugar Bowl
- 51:53and then the night it were the, it went from like nice steady
- 51:58growth to look. And it's like, first of all,
- 52:02begin Make a lot of statements or
- 52:19judgments on anyone when I don't know them or their thought
- 52:22process because I'm a fair-minded person.
- 52:25So it's worth the but the college football bubble is going
- 52:30to burst. He said that what six years ago
- 52:32Braun seven years ago called I want to say, I thought so 2014,
- 52:38he said well college football football bubble is going to
- 52:42burst with the revenues. What did He just not see the
- 52:47SEC. Get a 55 million dollar purse
- 52:49full contract fucking Disney. I don't think he quite
- 52:53understands even if there are attendance issues across the
- 52:58board, there's still a lot of goddamn TV money and that TV
- 53:04money and there's still a lot of culture that brings kids into
- 53:07want to come here. Yeah.
- 53:09Just want to go to a boring ass school.
- 53:13I don't know what to tell him, but anyone can go.
- 53:16Get a degree fucking anywhere. Now, they consider their house
- 53:19to get it in degree. The reason the kids go to
- 53:21college is to college experience.
- 53:23If they're paid a premium for it and you're going, you're getting
- 53:26the fucking experience and you're getting a better
- 53:28education and you're you're getting everything that you
- 53:31want. But the case you were going to
- 53:35come down, you're expanding your horizons and meeting new people.
- 53:38You're doing things that actually, you can.
- 53:43I know you grew up out in the Far, West part of State.
- 53:46We grow on the south side part of the state.
- 53:47We grew up in a very quick sap, Deep South way.
- 53:53We're middle South, we grew up in small communities that for
- 53:58us, going to college and getting those experiences and meeting
- 54:01people. You know, you know, and I know
- 54:04that if we'd stayed in our hometowns, we would never have
- 54:07the opportunity ever to get there to do.
- 54:11Those sort of things to meet those sort of people to go to
- 54:15game. Um, dates to have these
- 54:17experiences. That's why.
- 54:19And if you're taking turning a blind eye to not thinking that
- 54:22six seven times a year, when there's a game and when there's
- 54:27a big game, there's 120,000 people.
- 54:33That's his View and you said, you've never personally met him.
- 54:36I'm like to have a conversation with him and saying, what do you
- 54:39think? Because education is important.
- 54:41Don't get me wrong. Yes, they I don't think he's
- 54:48quite getting it and I'm not sure he will.
- 54:52But we come from these small towns and I came here because I
- 55:00I actually came from a group of people that were UVA fans,
- 55:05believe it or not back in looks outfits.
- 55:07Virginia, my family, a bunch of UVA fans because they had quote,
- 55:10unquote UVA College. It was.
- 55:12And that's where my family went, like in undergrad.
- 55:15Okay. And a girl, that's, the thing
- 55:20is, I came here because I came up here and he was like, dude,
- 55:28you got to + Michael Vick was my first First college football
- 55:31game and that was awesome. Fucking stomping Eva, he came
- 55:36out and like I also my first NFL game was Michael Vick versus
- 55:41Peyton Manning, who my favorite quarterback, saber, holy hell,
- 55:45yeah, it was awesome. Michael Vick when he can't die.
- 55:50If you've not seen him throw a pass in person.
- 55:52It's a fucking laser. Like hate it.
- 55:55There's no there's no air under the ball.
- 55:58It's just fucking laser out there.
- 55:59It's amazing. But more motion either.
- 56:02It's a flick. It just Let It Go.
- 56:14That was a part of the culture was Rock.
- 56:16Came here and Rob full-on was just like Jeremy.
- 56:20This is an amazing place to be in college.
- 56:23You need to come here and I was like, of course, I need fucking
- 56:27go there. Rob's Probably sounds great.
- 56:30It sounds amazing. Yeah.
- 56:31I mean do we think this sounds really understands the impact
- 56:35and we'll think about it. from from your perspective, like the
- 56:39economic impact of game day weekends, like, just the
- 56:44potential that's there and the fact that it's not being Let me
- 56:55hear you ever went out into the tailgate into the downtown area
- 57:00when there is a game day and literally the streets are
- 57:02packed, bustling people in, and out of all the shops people in
- 57:07and out of all of the restaurants, people Paine Park,
- 57:10wherever they can park. I want to say yes, but because
- 57:14it's hard to avoid but it's one of those things where I don't
- 57:19know. I mean, he has to have, but
- 57:23you're mad. Yeah, he's a prominent figure
- 57:27out, they're out and about I don't want to make a lot of
- 57:31judgments on sands and his character, because I don't
- 57:33personally know. Okay, but it's, that's not
- 57:36something I will. Do you all know me?
- 57:38I will get fired up and I will give my opinion on literally
- 57:41anything, but I will reserve my opinion when it comes to quite a
- 57:47bit of things that I don't quite know.
- 57:49Well, we're with you. We with you for 20.
- 57:52Don't get us wrong. I think you're good coach.
- 57:53I think he's a good human being. I think I want to hurt person,
- 57:59but also you hear people, you know, up here in our VA, we have
- 58:04David to you, you know, great sports writer for so many years
- 58:07in Virginia. And he says, if you step in the
- 58:09office with him, he's so different.
- 58:12And you feel like if, if the food that is just getting that
- 58:15one-on-one sitting down in a chair with you, You feel like if
- 58:20you got him and some of the donors like that the deal would
- 58:23just be like just keep stroking them checks like he's like me.
- 58:26It's just everybody. Every single person that I've
- 58:29ever heard talk about him in a smaller situation.
- 58:32It's just like right? Just he's great guy.
- 58:36Now I lost my train of thought there because I was at my beard
- 58:42and his partner. It's one of those things where
- 59:22it's a I'd like to hear from you and your coordinators every
- 59:28week, but I'd like to hear from you on the radio in the markets
- 59:33where your fan base is located. I'd like to give you a lisp in
- 59:37Blacksburg. I might see videos, listen to
- 59:42the drive every day with Paul. I absolutely love all three of
- 59:47them. I also get shit-faced drunk with
- 59:50those people. They are people.
- 59:53They also have one of the best radio shows out there.
- 59:56Yeah. I absolutely love them, and
- 59:58people who don't listen to them, need to listen to drive because
- 1:00:01they are awesome. But they have had issues in the
- 1:00:07past, not so much with Foo, they had a lot of problems with Buzz.
- 1:00:12They Jeremy Why doesn't he go in there for a 15-minute hit?
- 1:00:22He could even pre-recorded with them every week.
- 1:00:25Why doesn't he do that in Richmond?
- 1:00:27Why doesn't he do that in the 75?
- 1:00:29Why doesn't he do that in Nova? Why doesn't he do that up in
- 1:00:31through the out? The valley?
- 1:00:32See that thing open it, dude, you've got to get yourself out
- 1:00:37there and then the other pieces will be like during spring.
- 1:00:42Open the scrimmages for people in town and for the students you
- 1:00:47can open it for 30 minutes. At the end, people would come
- 1:00:51what the people on the field. It's the easy but it's the
- 1:00:56funniest is, people are thinking we have to do all these things.
- 1:00:59Do the easiest stuff, you do, the easiest stuff
- 1:01:18that is. I think a lot of our problems
- 1:01:26have been us thinking what we are doing is quite a good
- 1:01:31enough, kind of like the high school situation we have in 804
- 1:01:35and 757 that we burned several bridges in some of the more
- 1:01:41prominent high schools in those areas
- 1:01:56and those kids and their trainers.
- 1:02:04Fuck all of them because guess what?
- 1:02:08Dollars just to continue, talking to your five-star son.
- 1:02:11No, go to hell, go fuck yourself, I don't care.
- 1:02:15No, they're sitting around forever.
- 1:02:17Oh, you need to recruit more, you're going to send them out of
- 1:02:20state. Anyway, what the fuck do you
- 1:02:22care? You're just trying to push your
- 1:02:23third tier athletes on us. No, fuck you and fuck all them.
- 1:02:29No, I'm not hearing that. That number pretty bridges
- 1:02:33burnt, thanks. No, I'm sorry.
- 1:02:35I'm sorry. We're not Clemson.
- 1:02:36I'm sorry. We didn't get down in the mud.
- 1:02:38Add too much, you know, maybe we should maybe we fucking should
- 1:02:42have but also fuck all those coaches and fuck those trainers.
- 1:02:47I will say this is a bigger problem in 757 than it is in
- 1:02:50other parts. Of course it is 75 cent dirty
- 1:02:53shit you know what I know and I definitely know it has found a
- 1:03:12way to monetize it. They have found a little
- 1:03:14industry there where they're going to make.
- 1:03:16Lunch money. Yep.
- 1:03:18And I want to see all of those fuckers wrecked because they are
- 1:03:21hurting the schools and state, they are hurting these kids in a
- 1:03:24lot of ways because they sent him off to programs that are
- 1:03:26just paying for Access. They'll do anything to these
- 1:03:28kids. How many kids are you seeing
- 1:03:31like going off and these are high ranked athletes?
- 1:03:34They don't do shit better than nothing since what about Steve
- 1:03:39started with the 75771 7th 3rd, Prince, but I want you all to
- 1:03:46follow me. Me through these last three
- 1:03:47days. Just follow me.
- 1:03:50Yep. We had the build up the huge
- 1:03:54buildup. We knew it was happening.
- 1:03:56Yeah. You knew it was happening.
- 1:03:59I knew it was happening. We knew was happening.
- 1:04:03Leaked on Twitter and now what's that?
- 1:04:05Fucking guys named Brendan Murphy McMurphy the one more
- 1:04:09week. Hey, The fuck.
- 1:04:17What? I know what.
- 1:04:45Sunday afternoon or Monday morning, if we were keeping him
- 1:04:50that shitty press conference, All right, so we get that that's
- 1:04:57Monday. Then we get well and we're still
- 1:05:00skeptical invited. Maybe they really fucked it up
- 1:05:03and they kept you. I was skeptical until the tech
- 1:05:05talk live. Had food coming online.
- 1:05:08Oh no, he's paying. He went
- 1:05:23blocker. All right.
- 1:05:32Oh, there's no way to hide it. It was a shit show Witnesses.
- 1:05:35We don't have to sugarcoat this. It was a shit show.
- 1:05:58That press conference was awful. That was eight.
- 1:06:01Shitshow train wreck that was actually a train wreck.
- 1:06:04Hauling manure. That was awful.
- 1:07:28Like come on. How do you not know this is
- 1:07:29going on? But I said, wish you know that
- 1:07:32to frustrating it's frustrating and I like these people, but
- 1:07:38it's frustrating. Yeah.
- 1:07:40It's a to meet the whole whipping, it felt like he was
- 1:07:42coming out there and lecturing us on while we were wrong
- 1:07:46instead of saying here's why I think I'm right, well.
- 1:07:56For all the bad things but hey, I'm not going to speculate
- 1:08:01because I've speculated enough for the day.
- 1:08:03I think maybe. Yeah.
- 1:08:29That have not been here. But one year, approximately say
- 1:08:33that, but we dehumanize we need to humanize somebody.
- 1:08:39Well, guess what? They don't let the guy talk.
- 1:08:42Let him talk to him, but yeah, I'm talking about corn.
- 1:08:55You have to talk y'all send one positional coach out and players
- 1:08:59out. Since you're you going I was
- 1:09:02apologizing for corn. I was actually very Pro corn at
- 1:09:07the beginning, the season, our offense was rolling, everything
- 1:09:10was going pretty well. I was I was fully Bob in the
- 1:09:15problem I have with corn in general is not so Much.
- 1:09:18The design of the offense were the plays.
- 1:09:21Its the situational play calling.
- 1:09:23Yes but it's hard for me. It's hard for me to actually
- 1:09:28because if it happened to work, yeah, great.
- 1:09:33He's a genius which know what's I think ever called him.
- 1:09:36But I have a hard time criticizing play calling because
- 1:09:42I think that is like the lowest hanging fruit whenever you get
- 1:09:46when it is over. Production that I care about and
- 1:09:50I was very pleased at the beginning of the season, but it
- 1:09:54became so apparent that we were having issues that it's thing
- 1:10:02about corn is, it's not even so much the question play calling
- 1:10:05or anything else. I'm sure he's a great person.
- 1:10:08I'm sure he is a little more cerebral and likes to think his
- 1:10:13offenses and people who criticized him for running a
- 1:10:17simple off. Fence.
- 1:10:18That's how most offenses are like.
- 1:10:21Granted you tend to run six to seven plays, you just do them
- 1:10:24out of different formations. I mean, corn decided to cut the
- 1:10:27middleman, just do a matter of one formation, but that's not my
- 1:10:35Peak. Its criticism of him was.
- 1:10:39I'm just not seeming that fuckin care.
- 1:10:43Yeah. That that got me this year.
- 1:10:49Can I say this? I think us three any part of
- 1:10:53hokey notion hopes, which right in anymore definitely help with
- 1:10:58right, I hope that one year from now.
- 1:11:03I could to say, well fuck what was right?
- 1:11:05We're going to play off or we're going on the Rose Bowl.
- 1:11:08We're going. We crushed it, he nailed it.
- 1:11:12And I think there are too many people out there that don't want
- 1:11:15him to be, right? And that is the issue.
- 1:11:18If you don't want the guy to be right, then you need to leave.
- 1:11:22You can criticize, you can give your logical explanation.
- 1:11:25Why? You don't think it'll work,
- 1:11:26that's that's acceptable, but if you're sitting here saying, I
- 1:11:30don't want him to be right. Well if you don't want them to
- 1:11:32rewrite your not a hokey and you need to leave the fan base and
- 1:11:35don't come back ever because you've you're actually not a
- 1:11:40real fan. You care more about being right
- 1:11:43than your team being good if you do that shit, then fuck you.
- 1:11:47You don't care about your team. And that's that's my biggest
- 1:11:52thing. With some people I want to be
- 1:11:54right, I want food to be the best so I can go to ever exist
- 1:11:58and I think he is a great coach. I really, really do.
- 1:12:02I think he came to us who was in a bad situation just to actually
- 1:12:08give a coach like through the infrastructure that he needed.
- 1:12:12It was a bad fit, that's what I think.
- 1:12:14Yeah. And now we have to build the
- 1:12:16fit. The problem is, is we've lost a
- 1:12:19lot of our momentum and credibility in the along, the
- 1:12:24way. And so as Foo, and so has our
- 1:12:27program. So now we are building from the
- 1:12:30ground up for build from the ground up.
- 1:12:33And I do see this, because if you actually look at it with a
- 1:12:40reinvestment in, Into football and how we're trying to do it.
- 1:12:44It is a rebuild from your one. I get that messaging agree with
- 1:12:49that messaging. Yeah, I mean I think the big
- 1:12:54thing is like the thing that this program hasn't done
- 1:12:58historically is striking on infrastructure fronts while you
- 1:13:03have the capital to do so whether it's yeah literal
- 1:13:07capital or whether it's brand Capital, Virginia cat can Afford
- 1:13:12whatever Virginia Tech wants to afford.
- 1:13:14Anyone talking about anything? No, they have, they have more
- 1:13:20money than most like, small cities.
- 1:13:24It's they can do whatever they want if they really want to.
- 1:13:28He's got to move the money where it needs to be.
- 1:13:33You're going to throw some that make us and we'll talk Corporate
- 1:13:35America because that's what I work in in Prime, working me for
- 1:13:39a while, occasionally in Corporate America, the people
- 1:13:42who are making the money, who are crushing it, they see the
- 1:13:45benefits. They see the updates and
- 1:13:48Technology. They see the biggest pay raises,
- 1:13:50where the other sectors. Don't football, is the biggest
- 1:13:54sector. Of the Virginia Tech athletic
- 1:13:57department. And what's happened is, we
- 1:13:59haven't dumped the money into it because if you dump the money
- 1:14:02into it's going to produce. Now, what really the problem is,
- 1:14:07we got fold with, we've got spoiled with Beamer, you got to
- 1:14:10understand. Yeah, be no good and everyone
- 1:14:12else, we got spoiled one fucking behind.
- 1:14:17We not way behind. We were used to our name, our
- 1:14:20goddamn fucking assistant, payroll used to be fourth in the
- 1:14:23fucking country when you started school.
- 1:14:26And we're working Juniors and sophomores challenge.
- 1:14:29Came to us. Came to us and said, I want to
- 1:14:32play for you. What do you mean?
- 1:14:3711 came, the best player in the country came, and he, if he
- 1:14:40lived up to the billing Tyrod, Taylor was the top dual threat
- 1:14:44quarterback, in 2007 Tyree. One Billing is the best hokey to
- 1:14:50ever put on a uniform. Oh God, here we go.
- 1:14:55I love tie rod to the person.
- 1:15:12He is the embodiment of poop. Rossum.
- 1:15:15He is, you know why? Because he could on the San
- 1:15:18Diego Chargers right now and he decided not to That won't hold
- 1:15:32a half billion are without even a blank.
- 1:15:35He didn't because he knew it was an accident.
- 1:15:38I'll get into this. And I got called out for it.
- 1:15:41On Twitter about people that don't quite understand that I
- 1:15:43know what I'm talking about, but they were talking about, oh, his
- 1:15:49collective. Bargaining agreement says that
- 1:15:50he Can't do this or that. That doesn't matter when it
- 1:15:54comes down to negligence. Yes, no.
- 1:15:59Yeah, he could have, but it's also a steep slope to try to
- 1:16:03prove Reckless, negligence on a doctor on Game Day, who's trying
- 1:16:09to take here? It's a steep slope.
- 1:16:11That would have been very hard to prove.
- 1:16:12They would have had to be in. Like, all right, we we tested
- 1:16:16this doctor and he was positive for meth.
- 1:16:21And yes they would have had to happen so that's it Tyro.
- 1:16:30So I'm going to take that, hit challenging that but no
- 1:16:33not-not-not. It wasn't worth a damn move on
- 1:16:37move. All this wouldn't be a problem
- 1:16:39with the bills when I fucked him, the the Bills fan base.
- 1:16:42I'll say right now, I hate you. Vince, for Nathan, peeterman
- 1:16:49beer, Nathan Peterman - I'll never forget that game.
- 1:16:55Then you're like, hey, tie rod. Do you want to come in and save
- 1:16:58us? Yeah, sure why not?
- 1:17:01He took the bills to the playoffs.
- 1:17:05It was like the first time in fucking statue on that goddamn
- 1:17:10down. I'm so mad at them.
- 1:17:13All right, we're gonna move. I will ask you some we what we
- 1:17:16we've got a couple questions and then you get to pick games with
- 1:17:19us in a little while here. Alright, so we've all for you.
- 1:17:24What are your three top games you've ever been to?
- 1:17:28Oh, that's bleep. All games, I'm going to say, One
- 1:17:35of my favorites. It's it's a weird random.
- 1:17:37One was West Virginia. My freshman year, I was
- 1:17:46shirtless, I got an ESPN because it was freezing cold, and I was
- 1:17:51just drunk as shit. And I was up there in the North
- 1:17:56End Zone and I was going. Wow, and they got me, I was
- 1:18:02actually doing my little alcohol.
- 1:18:04All the I'm doing that and doing that.
- 1:18:13But it looks like my hands are really cold.
- 1:18:38A older older brother, was my aura at him and Sydney he played
- 1:18:43basketball hand in Sydney. Does that make sense?
- 1:19:08It was on multiple levels and it doesn't matter.
- 1:19:31As far as overall wins or anything else.
- 1:19:38It felt like I was back in Old Lane again.
- 1:19:43Okay, okay, I can feel that like everyone.
- 1:19:48It was fucking wild. Everyone was just tuned in.
- 1:19:51Everyone was going crazy over everything.
- 1:19:55And then, what do I hear in the distance?
- 1:19:58He get in mother fucker. Do you know what that did to us?
- 1:20:03People do not understand. Especially Weaver did not
- 1:20:10understand. That music hits us in a certain
- 1:20:16way coming through in that moment.
- 1:20:20Oh my God. What a way to reintroduce?
- 1:20:23It thing is there were a lot of kids to have.
- 1:20:26That didn't quite know what take it in.
- 1:21:27These people are losing their minds.
- 1:21:33Besides the first one, I gave two of those were in years that
- 1:21:39we didn't have to be all that great.
- 1:21:42It's true, very true. I'll we want we want our
- 1:21:46culture. We want our environment.
- 1:21:50We Want It Rock and we want it crushing and but you also.
- 1:21:54You're number one, you're number one was when the culture was
- 1:21:59when the environment motherfuckers were scared to
- 1:22:03drive down 81 and you got into the mountains and the smokes
- 1:22:07rolling off and control and you go in there.
- 1:22:12I'm getting chills thinking about it because we did it at
- 1:22:14Pitt and me and Brian are driving.
- 1:22:15You can see it rolling and you know, they're coming from
- 1:22:18Roanoke. And they start weaving and they
- 1:22:21start weaving. And then it's always the wall,
- 1:22:25always considered the wall to Virginia, Tech as you take the
- 1:22:28exit to 460. Yep, and wall.
- 1:22:32And you start going back there in the road gets a little
- 1:22:34smaller and then there's just getting a little better.
- 1:22:37Get a little smaller. Those years that Stadium.
- 1:22:44I had a girl that went to wife that went to college me and my
- 1:22:47wife. Huge Penn State fan parents went
- 1:22:50to Penn State always went up there.
- 1:22:51She went to Lane one time and when she came back, she said as
- 1:22:55fucking louder and beat her, I'm like yeah, hit it a lot louder,
- 1:23:01that's what we want Tennessee. Thing you could ever actually do
- 1:23:13like the the only way they can make it worse, was if Jerry
- 1:23:17Sandusky were eating. He was eating children after the
- 1:23:20fact. That's the only way.
- 1:23:22It could be worse and they still have a football program money
- 1:23:26speaks. Yep.
- 1:23:27Well fuck em. Fuck them.
- 1:23:30They should not have a program. Jesus Christ, Cincinnati through
- 1:23:38them underneath to laws teams. In Ohio, State play four games
- 1:23:43this year, the third best team in the country.
- 1:23:45How do you know? They played four games when we
- 1:23:48do start, when you start them, number two, and to start the
- 1:23:51year, regardless of, when they start playing, yelling sighs is
- 1:23:58real. What record should save when
- 1:24:38loss managers who were winning and losing to, to be honest.
- 1:24:44That's a good answer that's actually similar to what I would
- 1:24:48say if I had to give an answer on that because to me if we can
- 1:24:54put out a competitive team that doesn't lose games that we
- 1:24:57shouldn't and can still be in the coastal conversation at the
- 1:25:00embassy. but,
- 1:25:46They've got a defensive Foundation that they're building
- 1:25:49upon and they've got an offense that is competent when they're
- 1:25:54not giving the ball away. I mean, look up our schedule.
- 1:26:01Probably the team up the road from us is the team.
- 1:26:03You don't want us to lose to diversity Richmond, U of R will
- 1:26:09be rich. This could be a downward spiral
- 1:26:55that is going to be hard to recover from.
- 1:26:58If we lose black diamond in the cup, in the same year,
- 1:27:01especially if you couple that with another loss or two that's
- 1:27:03bad. So they don't tend to see them
- 1:27:06West Virginia and then Richmond. okay, so we might want to Then
- 1:27:13we go into Notre Dame. Holy shit.
- 1:27:18And then Virginia, why are we play Virginia?
- 1:28:20That's the only way. Yeah, that's kind of where we
- 1:28:59are to. We looked at the schedule, we
- 1:29:01looked at the pieces that we're losing.
- 1:29:04I mean, we can't lean on our running game with our first
- 1:29:10round left. Tackle headed to the NFL and two
- 1:29:14guys. There were supposed to be Either
- 1:29:17starters or serious rotation players next year.
- 1:29:22Hitting the portal like you can't lean on your running game
- 1:29:25anymore. I mean, I feel like if we had
- 1:29:29some consistency with the offensive line, I'd feel good
- 1:29:31with Holston Blackshear, doing some other things, and some of
- 1:29:34the other guys we've got coming in but we've been assured.
- 1:29:47Look at the schedule. I mean, we said, do we get to
- 1:29:50invite you back a year from now? And you get to talk about a new
- 1:29:53head coach. No, I got, you know, even if we
- 1:30:01shit the bed and go 4 and 8. They won't do it.
- 1:30:07So you think we're at the point now where if it were, if it
- 1:30:10wasn't this year we're riding it out.
- 1:30:13We're running out for a couple of years.
- 1:30:15We had so many people transfer We had.
- 1:30:22Everything else happen. The excuse next year, will be We
- 1:30:29had a bunch of people transfer and covid happen and we're in a
- 1:30:33down here, it'll be fine next year.
- 1:30:36Well, hold on, all the people will transfer in.
- 1:30:40This is where I will stick up and I'll go right after
- 1:30:42somebody. You need your job to keep these
- 1:30:46players in the program. Coaches.
- 1:30:50It is your job. It is your job to figure out
- 1:30:53what motivates them to keep them in the program, not to put their
- 1:30:56name in the portal. We are the second most portal
- 1:31:00University. In the last three years.
- 1:31:05The second most. Yes, and we have been on the
- 1:31:08good side. I have a feeling we're about to
- 1:31:11be on the bad side. So, you think there's I mean, I
- 1:31:16mean, depression-era poverty. In 2022.
- 1:31:47We had our window or window is burned out with fucked up.
- 1:31:54So we have gotten to a point now where it's going to have to, as
- 1:31:58we alluded to, we're going to have to burn it down to build it
- 1:32:01back up. Congratulations, guys.
- 1:32:08We're the little brother. We're poverty.
- 1:32:12Welcome. It's not fun here, guys.
- 1:32:15This is not fun. No, it's not.
- 1:32:18It's not. This is not where we want to be
- 1:32:20and that was when you're someone like, I'm not a negative person.
- 1:32:25No, you know, especially when it comes to our Sports.
- 1:32:29I don't know how we rebound from this.
- 1:32:32I don't. I guess the only thing you can
- 1:32:35say is pray to God miracles happen and we win games now
- 1:32:41fuck. That will win games without with
- 1:32:44miracles. It sucks.
- 1:33:35He got hired here before should have got hired in the position,
- 1:33:38a lot of shit. And we mentioned it here
- 1:33:40numerous times a year. Five years, Bobby it, now
- 1:33:57don't get me wrong, he's good at that he can sell recruits and
- 1:34:01everything else. But he's five yourself.
- 1:34:05You think you would have been better like putting the position
- 1:34:08as like. Recruiting coordinator.
- 1:34:12In terms of like coaching staff, recruiting coordinator a guy
- 1:34:16from the the coaching staff level working with those pieces.
- 1:34:19And then also that way he's more of a front-facing guy but not
- 1:34:22necessarily X's and O's on the field as much outside of his
- 1:34:26position. Now I think J Hamm knows
- 1:34:30everything. Technically all to shit.
- 1:34:34Okay, very good. The thing about a coordinator is
- 1:34:38they actually know have to know how to manage everything down
- 1:34:42through. There J Hamm will run a good God
- 1:34:47damn defense. He's good at what he does.
- 1:34:50He has a good mind for what he does.
- 1:34:52He just needs time to actually know how to adjust his people to
- 1:34:57get it too. And the way he envisions that is
- 1:35:01the difference. Okay, got it.
- 1:35:04Got it makes sense. He's going to be great one day,
- 1:35:07he's going to be a superstar. Guarantee that?
- 1:35:14Is he gonna be our superstar in like three years?
- 1:35:17Because you're scared. See Jeremy because you live in
- 1:35:20there. You're putting this reality on
- 1:35:24me, that essentially. Almost until the contracts are
- 1:35:30out. This is what we're stuck with
- 1:35:33and it could be really bad bursted, where if you were to
- 1:35:38tell me know if we start next year bov is just going to kick
- 1:35:44with to the side. They're going to get food
- 1:35:46decide. They're going to get a new 80
- 1:35:47and higher holding you program. Be a period piece, and a lot of
- 1:35:56people aren't happening. Aren't happy with that bov.
- 1:36:00No, because that's the piece that essentially say what you
- 1:36:04want to say that in the president's, to do control the
- 1:36:09athletic department of time, and if they're sitting there and
- 1:36:13especially this year again, you mentioned it already.
- 1:36:16We've talked about it there, the winds work, the change was
- 1:36:19coming. Somebody was going to get hired
- 1:36:23when I was going to get hired and it was gonna be one of those
- 1:36:26boot. I don't think may help would lie
- 1:36:30to us. So you think that you think the
- 1:36:35bov was completely on board? Not counting, the additional
- 1:36:42revenue is in town. You have to see that, right?
- 1:36:47Oh, you were smarter than me? I'm a simple.
- 1:36:51Yes. And a revenue is not a big deal
- 1:36:54to me. Yes, it's not a big deal, but
- 1:36:58it's a big deal to all of the people are represented Resent.
- 1:37:02Yeah, what you got Curtis. It's just one of those things
- 1:37:07where you again, you feel like it's the truth that the fans,
- 1:37:11the $25, or the people driving from Richmond, a couple times a
- 1:37:16year down on the program. The kids, who are going there
- 1:37:20going on in the program anymore. Well, as recalibrate and a fun
- 1:37:25night here with dr. Jeremy counts.
