A jury just delivered a historic $16 million verdict to Kristy Gesse, finding New Hampshire’s Department of Health and Human Services grossly negligent for failing to protect her from abuse at a youth facility decades ago. Despite the state’s defense that the case was filed too late, the jury sided with Gesse, assigning 25% fault to the state, 60% to the now-deceased facility operator, and smaller shares to his wife and the retreat itself.
