Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: One by one, I undid the locks, and before I
- 0:03Speaker 1: could even reach down to grab the handle, the door
- 0:06Speaker 1: slowly opened.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Drew, what are you doing? Uh, nothing.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Just getting ready for the episode.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Oh.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Welcome to Fully Disclosed Real Estate and Real Life, an
- 0:22Speaker 1: NP Dodge Council Buffs podcast created and produced by real
- 0:25Speaker 1: estate agents who live this stuff every day. We're pulling
- 0:28Speaker 1: back the curtain on the deals, dilemmas, and details nobody
- 0:31Speaker 1: warns you about. Before we get into it, a quick disclosure.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This podcast is for general information and entertainment only. Not legal, tax, financial,
- 0:38Speaker 1: or individual real estate advice. Listening doesn't create an agency relationship,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and the views shared by our hosts and guests may
- 0:44Speaker 1: not represent iffy dodge. Now let's get fully disclosed. What
- 0:50Speaker 1: if a home has been associated with death, crime, notorious
- 0:53Speaker 1: former owner, or something paranormal? In this Halloween episode, our
- 0:57Speaker 1: agents explore stigmatized properties, what gives a house a reputation,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and how does that history affect market value? This is
- 1:04Speaker 1: Fully Disclosed Real Estate and Real Life. I'm Drew Rowe.
- 1:07Speaker 4: I'm Marge Leaders.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I'm Terry O'Toole. And I'm Jesse Scudler. We're all MP
- 1:12Speaker 2: Dodge agents here in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
- 1:14Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:15Speaker 1: So what exactly is a stigmatized property?
- 1:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:20Speaker 2: In its simplest terms? It would be a property that
- 1:23Speaker 2: has a history or like something happened there, possibly. It
- 1:28Speaker 2: would affect its marketability or its saleability, but nothing with
- 1:32Speaker 2: it structurally is necessarily wrong.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Or a perceived issue with the property.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Thank you, neighbors. Right.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:43Speaker 1: You know, and here in Council Bluffs, there's a lot
- 1:47Speaker 1: of history that is just ingrained in our communities. where
- 1:50Speaker 1: there's stories that we can pick up every single day
- 1:54Speaker 1: all over. And it's insane at how much history is
- 1:58Speaker 1: actually here. I actually have a story, a showing that
- 2:01Speaker 1: I did a couple years ago. This house was.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Probably one of the first built in Council Bluffs.
- 2:09Speaker 1: So old that Abraham Lincoln actually stood on the front
- 2:12Speaker 1: porch of this house. Do you know what I'm talking about?
- 2:16Speaker 4: Sure did.
- 2:17Speaker 1: So It was, ironically, it was in the fall time,
- 2:20Speaker 1: right around Halloween. And the couple that I took to
- 2:25Speaker 1: this home around 8, 8.30 p.m. walked up to the
- 2:30Speaker 1: front door. And you could just instantly feel this heaviness
- 2:33Speaker 1: as you open.
- 2:34Speaker 2: The door and walk in. Before you even got in there.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Before you even got in there.
- 2:38Speaker 2: And we walked in.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And we were searching for the lights because it was
- 2:42Speaker 1: dark out. I had to pull out my phone and
- 2:43Speaker 1: use the flashlight. It was wall sconces. In that first room,
- 2:47Speaker 1: there was no light switch.
- 2:49Speaker 2: It was wall sconces.
- 2:50Speaker 1: And I remember going through and I would pull the little,
- 2:54Speaker 1: the chain for the wall sconce. My client also wanted
- 2:58Speaker 1: to help out and was pulling them. Every single one
- 3:01Speaker 1: that she pulled, the house actually shocked her. Like there's, yeah,
- 3:06Speaker 1: like it shocked her.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Did it shock you? It never shocked me.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I don't know why that was. So we went toward
- 3:13Speaker 1: the house, went upstairs, and there was still an eerie
- 3:17Speaker 1: feel throughout the entire home. And then finally when we
- 3:20Speaker 1: were going to go to the basement to see the HVAC,
- 3:23Speaker 1: the systems, just to check it out, I noticed that
- 3:27Speaker 1: there were several locks on.
- 3:29Speaker 2: The door, on the inside of the door. To the basement.
- 3:33Speaker 2: To the basement. Okay.
- 3:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 3:36Speaker 2: And so I unlocked all of them.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And before I even reached down to turn the handle,
- 3:41Speaker 1: the door just slowly opens. And you can see down
- 3:45Speaker 1: into this basement, those steps were incredibly steep.
- 3:49Speaker 2: And it was pitch black.
- 3:51Speaker 1: My buyers looked down there and they said, we are
- 3:54Speaker 1: not interested. It was probably one of the eeriest experiences
- 4:00Speaker 1: that I've had.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Showing houses. Yeah.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I showed that house.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 4:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:07Speaker 2: My buyer wanted to go into the basement. Yeah. How
- 4:09Speaker 2: was that basement? Because we never went down. It was
- 4:13Speaker 2: a basement that just had a weird feel, like a
- 4:16Speaker 2: heavy feel, a dungeon-y type feel. But, I mean, they
- 4:20Speaker 2: didn't buy it either. They wanted to go down. We
- 4:23Speaker 2: were there. Was it during the daytime?
- 4:25Speaker 7: Yes.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 4:28Speaker 2: But there wasn't much light in that basement. We were
- 4:31Speaker 2: using flashlights. I bet. So, yeah. What other stories do
- 4:37Speaker 2: you guys have?
- 4:38Speaker 8: Well, I approached this house.
- 4:42Speaker 4: That I was going to preview.
- 4:44Speaker 8: And as I drove in, I had to walk through
- 4:49Speaker 8: a sidewalk that was covered over with like bramble bushes.
- 4:56Speaker 8: And I thought, wow, you know, they're getting ready to
- 4:58Speaker 8: sell and it looks like this. So I opened the
- 5:01Speaker 8: door and I met.
- 5:04Speaker 4: With this smell.
- 5:05Speaker 8: It's a very pungent smell. And I walked on in
- 5:11Speaker 8: and I went on into... the living room. And I
- 5:15Speaker 8: looked around and there were all of these miniature Gothic
- 5:22Speaker 8: figurines all over the living room.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Again, I'm thinking, wow, that's something. And in the bedroom,
- 5:34Speaker 4: up on.
- 5:34Speaker 8: The ceiling was mounted A full adult size witch in
- 5:43Speaker 8: full costume on the ceiling.
- 5:47Speaker 4: And that's when.
- 5:48Speaker 8: I decided maybe that wasn't the house.
- 5:51Speaker 4: So that one, there's never a dull moment.
- 5:54Speaker 2: What was your buyer's thoughts on that as you're going
- 5:57Speaker 2: through that?
- 5:58Speaker 8: Well, we didn't get it at first. You know, it
- 6:00Speaker 8: took a little while for it to register.
- 6:03Speaker 4: But then they.
- 6:06Speaker 8: It was the witch on the ceiling that really did
- 6:08Speaker 8: them in.
- 6:09Speaker 4: They decided it wasn't for them.
- 6:11Speaker 8: So, no.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Oh, my.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Yeah. There's always something.
- 6:16Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 6:17Speaker 2: And out of all of us here, Terry, you've always
- 6:20Speaker 2: got a story. You always have a story. So, I
- 6:23Speaker 2: am very curious to know, what do you have for us? So,
- 6:26Speaker 2: since we're doing Halloween theme.
- 6:29Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 6:29Speaker 5: So, here's my Halloween story. I was on floor duty
- 6:33Speaker 5: and got a guy called me. wanted to possibly sell
- 6:36Speaker 5: his house, wants to move to Wyoming because he thinks.
- 6:38Speaker 2: He can buy houses a lot cheaper out there.
- 6:41Speaker 3: I said, okay.
- 6:43Speaker 5: So I drove up, little small ranch house, brick. He
- 6:46Speaker 5: was standing outside. Side door, I pulled up, went in.
- 6:51Speaker 5: There's a kitchen, so we're looking at the kitchen stuff.
- 6:54Speaker 5: So we go in the living room, that's in the
- 6:56Speaker 5: front part, and I notice three mannequins, full outfit military, combat.
- 7:05Speaker 2: With guns, with a rifle. They had pistols and everything
- 7:08Speaker 2: like that.
- 7:09Speaker 5: And I'm looking around, and there's medieval furniture. Okay, so
- 7:14Speaker 5: we go into the bedrooms, bathroom, come back out, sit down.
- 7:18Speaker 5: I said, I want to hear a story. As I'm
- 7:21Speaker 5: going through my listing presentation, I'm looking around, and I
- 7:25Speaker 5: see all these medieval swords, knives, axes, the chain with
- 7:31Speaker 5: the ball on it.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 7:33Speaker 2: And I'm looking at those rifles. I'm a hunter. And
- 7:36Speaker 2: I says, are those real rifles? He goes, yeah, and
- 7:38Speaker 2: they're loaded.
- 7:40Speaker 6: Okay.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Okay.
- 7:42Speaker 3: So, okay. And I noticed it was just like dust around, dirty.
- 7:45Speaker 5: And so I said, well, here's some things. If I'm
- 7:47Speaker 5: going to list it, all this stuff's got to go.
- 7:50Speaker 5: I mean, because you'll probably freak people out. And as
- 7:54Speaker 5: far as the dust and stuff, I mean, it's pretty thick.
- 7:57Speaker 5: You'll have to have somebody come and clean it. So
- 8:00Speaker 5: I said, well, let's go down to the basement. I'm thinking, Okay,
- 8:04Speaker 5: it can't be too crazy.
- 8:04Speaker 2: But I don't know what I'm going to be looking at.
- 8:06Speaker 5: So we go down, and the back half is all open,
- 8:09Speaker 5: cement floor, washer, dryer.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I turn around to the front part. I saw these
- 8:14Speaker 2: bedrooms there.
- 8:16Speaker 5: So I open the first door, turn the light on,
- 8:18Speaker 5: and here's a casket on a table.
- 8:21Speaker 2: So I go over there, and here's a mannequin fully
- 8:24Speaker 2: dressed Elvis Presley. I go, oh, I found him. Yeah,
- 8:28Speaker 2: that's what I said. I was wondering where Elvis went. So.
- 8:33Speaker 5: And then the other room, we went in and I
- 8:35Speaker 5: turned on the light and here's a rubber doll on
- 8:40Speaker 5: the bed. And I stepped back and I said, I
- 8:42Speaker 5: think I found Elvis's girlfriend. And he slithers by me
- 8:47Speaker 5: and says, there's no sex going on here.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I swear there's no sex going on. I said, let's
- 8:51Speaker 2: go upstairs. And so we get up, I get next
- 8:53Speaker 2: to the door. I put my car down on the counter.
- 8:56Speaker 5: And I says, well, since you want to go to Wyoming,
- 8:59Speaker 5: we'll get with our corporate office, referral office, and we'll
- 9:02Speaker 5: get you with somebody out in Wyoming that.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Can help you.
- 9:05Speaker 5: And I got the hell out of there.
- 9:10Speaker 2: So we had two from the buy side, one from
- 9:12Speaker 2: the listing side. Wow. Wow.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Wow.
- 9:16Speaker 2: It's always an adventure with what we do. Oh, yes.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Oh, my goodness.
- 9:23Speaker 8: No, one of the things that I can remember was
- 9:27Speaker 8: I was involved with this historic home tour one year.
- 9:33Speaker 8: And I met the people, the homeowners, and they said, well,
- 9:39Speaker 8: you just need to know that we do have a
- 9:42Speaker 8: ghost here. It's a friendly ghost, but we have a ghost.
- 9:46Speaker 8: And so if people are bothered by this, we want
- 9:50Speaker 8: to be right up front. And I said, okay. So
- 9:53Speaker 8: I went in and you could feel it. Like you said, the.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Energy was there.
- 10:00Speaker 8: And so that's probably the closest that I've come to
- 10:05Speaker 8: feeling that.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Yeah. Right.
- 10:07Speaker 5: You know, I wonder if people are more in tune
- 10:09Speaker 5: to the spirits than others, because I had a rental
- 10:12Speaker 5: property that I had a young couple in there and
- 10:16Speaker 5: they're there two or three months and they says, well,
- 10:18Speaker 5: there's ghosts in here. And I painted there, did construction
- 10:22Speaker 5: work there. So, yeah, my grandma and grandpa owned this
- 10:26Speaker 5: house years ago.
- 10:27Speaker 2: And as a little kid, I was there.
- 10:29Speaker 5: And so we go in the kitchen and we see
- 10:31Speaker 5: things that are moving or things that are moving.
- 10:33Speaker 2: And it's just grandma and grandpa. So we're enjoying it. Okay. Okay.
- 10:39Speaker 2: But there was a kid?
- 10:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:42Speaker 8: Ghost kid?
- 10:42Speaker 2: Well, they said they could see stuff moving around. Oh, okay.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Things like cops moving here, and they come downstairs in
- 10:49Speaker 5: the morning, and they knew stuff was moved.
- 10:51Speaker 7: Yeah, right.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Because I saw my grandpa and grandma, so we're good.
- 10:57Speaker 2: I did have a gal that I worked with.
- 10:59Speaker 5: She also told me ahead of time that she's spiritually inclined.
- 11:03Speaker 5: We went to this one house, and as soon as
- 11:07Speaker 5: she got in, she said, my chest got heavy, there's
- 11:10Speaker 5: a spirit here, we're leaving.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I said, okay. I didn't feel nothing. It varies for everybody.
- 11:17Speaker 2: I think so.
- 11:18Speaker 6: It does.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I think it does.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 11:19Speaker 1: And then for Iowa, we don't have to necessarily disclose,
- 11:26Speaker 1: but it's like a.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Well, I would say with anything with that, go back
- 11:31Speaker 2: to your agent. Whoever the agent is that's representing you,
- 11:35Speaker 2: let them make that decision. Right.
- 11:37Speaker 6: Okay.
- 11:37Speaker 8: And it depends on different cultures. You have to be
- 11:41Speaker 8: very aware that different cultures feel differently about, what do
- 11:48Speaker 8: you want to say, paranormals?
- 11:50Speaker 4: Absolutely. So if you are aware, you don't.
- 11:56Speaker 8: Want the neighbor to come in and tell them that
- 11:59Speaker 8: such and such has happened and you're not aware of it.
- 12:02Speaker 4: Right, right.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Well, and I think to bring this all back to
- 12:05Speaker 2: kind of where we started this episode, what is a
- 12:09Speaker 2: stigmatized property? One property I'm familiar with here in Council Bluffs,
- 12:13Speaker 2: there was a murder-suicide. And it was kind of a
- 12:18Speaker 2: love story, really. But the wife had gotten really sick,
- 12:23Speaker 2: and she was to the point where she was just done.
- 12:26Speaker 2: She didn't want to fight anymore. And kept asking her
- 12:30Speaker 2: husband to just, essentially shoot her so that she wasn't
- 12:34Speaker 2: suffering anymore. So he had finally done that. He shot
- 12:38Speaker 2: her in their dining room. He was so heartbroken over it,
- 12:42Speaker 2: he shot himself at the same time because He didn't
- 12:45Speaker 2: want to go on living without her.
- 12:47Speaker 6: Yes.
- 12:47Speaker 2: That's crazy. There's a house here in Council Bluffs that
- 12:51Speaker 2: that story is tied to. Wow.
- 12:53Speaker 8: Yes.
- 12:54Speaker 4: I remember that.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yeah. So it's kind of, you know, something like that.
- 12:58Speaker 2: It's got some history to it. Some people know it.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Some don't. But it could fall under that stigmatized piece
- 13:04Speaker 2: of it, possibly. Some people will care about it. Some
- 13:08Speaker 2: may not.
- 13:09Speaker 8: Well, I know there is also another property here in
- 13:13Speaker 8: Council Bluffs. It has sold, I believe, three different times.
- 13:18Speaker 8: And the reason that it keeps selling is because there
- 13:23Speaker 8: is a spirit there.
- 13:25Speaker 4: In the house.
- 13:26Speaker 8: And the owners, they don't want to deal with the spirit.
- 13:33Speaker 2: All very interesting, right? Yes, it is. I think with that,
- 13:38Speaker 2: we're going to have a commercial break and we'll come
- 13:39Speaker 2: right back. Quick interruption.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Fully Disclosed is created by the agents at NP Dodge
- 13:45Speaker 3: and Council Bluffs. So a quick word from NP Dodge,
- 13:47Speaker 3: which is us.
- 13:49Speaker 2: The agents in our office help people buy and sell
- 13:52Speaker 2: throughout Council Bluffs and Southwest Iowa.
- 13:54Speaker 3: So if you hear something that makes you realize you
- 13:56Speaker 3: may need an actual.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Real estate agent, because this podcast cannot legally do that
- 14:00Speaker 2: for you. Find NP Dodge on Facebook or Instagram or
- 14:04Speaker 2: check the show notes for our office information. Okay, commercial over.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Now back to it. Okay, welcome back. I am still Jesse.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Everyone here has some of these experiences, and now we
- 14:17Speaker 2: have some new faces.
- 14:19Speaker 3: I'm Monty Wilson.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Kathy Rodness.
- 14:22Speaker 4: And Memory Mesher.
- 14:23Speaker 2: And we are all agents here at MP Dodge. And
- 14:27Speaker 2: we have to point out, Monty came dressed for the
- 14:29Speaker 2: occasion for this Halloween episode. So with that, we're kind
- 14:36Speaker 2: of telling some of the spooky stories or weird stories
- 14:40Speaker 2: that we've had in all of our years of dealing
- 14:42Speaker 2: with real estate. And Kathy, I know you've told us
- 14:45Speaker 2: about one that you've dealt with. So why don't you
- 14:48Speaker 2: tell the audience here what they could, what you had encountered.
- 14:52Speaker 6: Mine is one of the kind of things that make
- 14:53Speaker 6: you go, hmm, it's in that category. It was early
- 14:57Speaker 6: in my career and I went to a house which
- 14:59Speaker 6: was part of the Underground Railroad. And the basement had
- 15:03Speaker 6: access to a tunnel system at the time. And since then,
- 15:06Speaker 6: it has all been sealed up down there so nobody
- 15:09Speaker 6: can come in or go out. But they did find
- 15:11Speaker 6: when they were doing the remodeling, they did find a
- 15:13Speaker 6: big knife sealed up in the wall, which was kind
- 15:15Speaker 6: of interesting. And they've had instances where they'll put like
- 15:19Speaker 6: a watch or some kind of trinket on a table
- 15:22Speaker 6: and it'll be gone. And a week or two weeks
- 15:25Speaker 6: or a month later, it's there in the same exact
- 15:27Speaker 6: spot where it was left. They just go away and
- 15:29Speaker 6: come back. They've also had instances where at one time
- 15:34Speaker 6: there was the daughter and her boyfriend were in the
- 15:36Speaker 6: house and the boyfriend hadn't been there before, hadn't heard
- 15:39Speaker 6: about this. But a young man came around the corner,
- 15:44Speaker 6: looked like a real person. He said, hey, what are
- 15:47Speaker 6: you doing? And here took off, chased after him. And
- 15:49Speaker 6: in the dining room, they disappeared. And that's happened. They've
- 15:53Speaker 6: seen this young man before and he's vanished in the
- 15:56Speaker 6: same room. Every time they chase him, he vanishes there.
- 15:59Speaker 2: That's happened a few times.
- 16:00Speaker 6: Okay. So also they had dogs, and the dogs would
- 16:05Speaker 6: go whine in that corner of the dining room where
- 16:08Speaker 6: the person would disappear, sometimes scratch at the walls. So
- 16:12Speaker 6: it's just something's going on.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Sure.
- 16:15Speaker 3: You know, it's just a different kind of thing.
- 16:17Speaker 2: And it was always in the dining room?
- 16:19Speaker 3: Yes, every time, every time.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Now, was this like a? A grown man? A kid?
- 16:25Speaker 2: It was a young man. Okay, a young man.
- 16:27Speaker 6: And yeah, same person every time. And he looks just
- 16:30Speaker 6: as surprised when he sees them as they see him.
- 16:32Speaker 6: And she said he looks like a regular person.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Wow.
- 16:36Speaker 6: Not like transparent or anything, how you picture a.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Ghost, but he looks like a real person. So yeah,
- 16:41Speaker 4: it's a different thing.
- 16:42Speaker 2: So interesting. Yes.
- 16:44Speaker 6: And then another instance I was in, actually this one,
- 16:46Speaker 6: my son had a friend and he'd spend a lot
- 16:49Speaker 6: of time at their house and windows would go up
- 16:51Speaker 6: and down occasionally by themselves and the TV channel would
- 16:54Speaker 6: change stations occasionally or the TV.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Would go on and off by itself.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Well, I used to do that to my dad.
- 17:03Speaker 6: And I guess there was a fire in the house previously,
- 17:06Speaker 6: so I don't know if that had something to do
- 17:08Speaker 6: with it. But I know that home had sold since,
- 17:10Speaker 6: and the people that currently own it have little things
- 17:12Speaker 6: like that happening still.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Isn't that interesting?
- 17:15Speaker 4: Actually, it sounds like our old house.
- 17:17Speaker 2: You never know.
- 17:19Speaker 4: We had the same thing. My mom came from down
- 17:22Speaker 4: south in Arkansas up to visit us the first time
- 17:24Speaker 4: after we moved in. And we had.
- 17:28Speaker 4: A tunnel downstairs in the basement that went up into
- 17:30Speaker 4: our walls. And then it went out into the street,
- 17:33Speaker 4: into the brick street. And my mom went downstairs. That
- 17:37Speaker 4: was the last time she ever visited us in that house.
- 17:39Speaker 4: She said she wasn't coming back, and she didn't.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Oh, my goodness.
- 17:42Speaker 4: Because she also said she saw somebody. So, no, that
- 17:46Speaker 4: was it. But it was a beautiful old house, and
- 17:49Speaker 4: we never had any problems. But it sounded just like
- 17:51Speaker 4: the one you described.
- 17:52Speaker 6: And our friend, she says they're not malevolent. They're nice ghosts.
- 17:55Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 17:56Speaker 6: And they don't feel any way about it. Some people
- 17:59Speaker 6: don't care. Some people are disturbed by it.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 18:02Speaker 2: I think it just varies per buyer.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:05Speaker 2: As to what they think.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Interesting. Okay. Well, yeah.
- 18:11Speaker 3: You know, I'm in the business of flipping. That's kind
- 18:14Speaker 3: of my forte.
- 18:14Speaker 6: Okay.
- 18:15Speaker 3: And so I've been in many old decrepit houses, had
- 18:18Speaker 3: a lot of different experiences.
- 18:20Speaker 7: But I really never believed in anything spiritual about houses.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Sure.
- 18:25Speaker 3: And the last house I came from here in Castle
- 18:28Speaker 3: Bluffs was built in 1890.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:31Speaker 7: You know, given that age of a house, something bad
- 18:34Speaker 7: has probably happened. Somebody's died in it for sure.
- 18:36Speaker 3: With every old house. I never got scared in there.
- 18:39Speaker 3: I never got spooked.
- 18:41Speaker 7: But this one particular flip that I bought was this
- 18:44Speaker 7: big old gray two-story.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Looked kind of shady from the start.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Good start.
- 18:55Speaker 3: This was a time when there was a lot of
- 18:56Speaker 3: foreclosures going on. It was right after the market crashed.
- 19:01Speaker 7: Back in the day and there's a lot of houses
- 19:02Speaker 7: sitting on the market this particular one had been on
- 19:04Speaker 7: the market for years So there's lots of cobwebs Just
- 19:09Speaker 7: everything you can imagine in a house just sitting there
- 19:11Speaker 7: boarded up windows here and there But it was it
- 19:14Speaker 7: was spooky to begin with but it was it was priced.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Good Solid bones and price good. So anyway, we started
- 19:24Speaker 3: flipping this house And my flipping partner does a lot
- 19:27Speaker 3: of the heavy work. He is really doesn't believe in
- 19:31Speaker 3: spiritual things anyway. It's been in so many decrepit houses
- 19:33Speaker 3: and just like whatever. And we start seeing.
- 19:37Speaker 7: This pale image of this nine, 10 year old blonde
- 19:41Speaker 7: haired girl, could be your sister.
- 19:45Speaker 3: But it would really startle us and at different times.
- 19:49Speaker 7: And we both made the confessions like, we're just seeing
- 19:53Speaker 7: the same image.
- 19:55Speaker 3: But we thought, okay, we made it up in our heads,
- 19:56Speaker 3: we're just continuing on. House makes a lot of sounds
- 19:59Speaker 3: as it is. And then we had his nephew.
- 20:05Speaker 7: Who was born in the Bronx in New York, strong
- 20:08Speaker 7: Latino guy, He doesn't believe in anything. He was working
- 20:13Speaker 7: there with Abel and I and came up with the
- 20:15Speaker 7: same image without even talking to us.
- 20:17Speaker 6: Wow.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Now, would this happen? You guys are there at all
- 20:23Speaker 2: different times?
- 20:24Speaker 3: All different times. It was at night.
- 20:25Speaker 2: So it wasn't like you guys were all together and
- 20:28Speaker 2: saw it?
- 20:29Speaker 3: No, it was different times seeing the same image.
- 20:33Speaker 6: Wow.
- 20:33Speaker 7: But the final part that really spooked us out and
- 20:35Speaker 7: raised the hairs on my back is we hired this
- 20:37Speaker 7: electrical contractor because the lights would never stay on.
- 20:41Speaker 3: It was flickering, dimming, so we had to rewire the
- 20:43Speaker 3: whole house to go, okay, something's wrong with it.
- 20:46Speaker 7: So this big burly electrical guy who was working at
- 20:50Speaker 7: night calls me and he says, are you sure this
- 20:52Speaker 7: house is vacant?
- 20:53Speaker 3: And I said, yeah, we're sure. And I didn't say anything.
- 20:56Speaker 3: And he says, well, there's somebody here, and I keep
- 20:59Speaker 3: seeing her, and.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Wow.
- 21:02Speaker 3: He says, I don't know if I can work here.
- 21:04Speaker 3: But anyway, my head, I said, I understand. We did
- 21:09Speaker 3: get the whole thing done. The house before we bought
- 21:13Speaker 3: it had had several owners and it's had several owners since.
- 21:16Speaker 6: Wow.
- 21:17Speaker 3: I didn't take the last listing on it. But very,
- 21:21Speaker 3: very eerie.
- 21:22Speaker 2: There's always something.
- 21:24Speaker 4: Have you changed your mind about maybe thinking there's something
- 21:29Speaker 4: spiritual going on?
- 21:31Speaker 3: I do believe in it now.
- 21:33Speaker 4: Okay.
- 21:34Speaker 3: I do believe that everything happens for a reason.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Sure.
- 21:38Speaker 3: So I'm spiritual in a way. When it comes to
- 21:41Speaker 3: haunted houses, I do.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Believe in them. Yeah, there could be some of that
- 21:46Speaker 2: for sure. Wow. So we've had two instances here where
- 21:50Speaker 2: we had some of this. I know your stories.
- 21:54Speaker 4: Mine's a little different. Mine's not really a haunted feeling
- 21:57Speaker 4: or spiritual-type feeling. I had some first-time homebuyers that I
- 22:03Speaker 4: was working with, and a house came up on the market,
- 22:06Speaker 4: and it came up rather quick. And, of course, sometimes
- 22:09Speaker 4: in our market you have to jump on it quick
- 22:11Speaker 4: or you miss out. So my clients had called me.
- 22:16Speaker 4: And I got a hold of the agent right away,
- 22:18Speaker 4: and we were one of the first people that were
- 22:20Speaker 4: down to see the house. We walk in, and of course, sometimes,
- 22:25Speaker 4: and you'd like to see this, but she fell in
- 22:27Speaker 4: love immediately as she walked in. And as we're walking in,
- 22:31Speaker 4: I see a swimsuit, a women's swimsuit, hanging over a door.
- 22:37Speaker 4: We get to the kitchen. It's stacked with dishes. And
- 22:40Speaker 4: I'm thinking, wow, we must have made them like leave
- 22:43Speaker 4: really quick or something. The water is still in the sink.
- 22:45Speaker 4: The dishes are stacked. And I look over and there's
- 22:49Speaker 4: a dirty diaper by the changing table where a baby
- 22:52Speaker 4: would have been. And so we're looking around the house.
- 22:55Speaker 4: They're still loving everything they're seeing. And we get to
- 22:58Speaker 4: one of the bedrooms and I noticed the trim work
- 23:01Speaker 4: around the door was off. And I said, well, that's
- 23:03Speaker 4: something that's minor if you love the house that much.
- 23:07Speaker 4: We get through and we get inside and.
- 23:11Speaker 4: We're looking around and there's like three rectangles cut out
- 23:16Speaker 4: on the drywall. And they're like, well, why would this happen?
- 23:21Speaker 4: And they batted back and forth different ideas why it
- 23:24Speaker 4: might be. Well, maybe they were looking for the electrical
- 23:26Speaker 4: outlets if they were going to change them or move them.
- 23:29Speaker 4: And I had no idea what was going on. And
- 23:33Speaker 4: they decided then and there they wanted to put an
- 23:35Speaker 4: offer in on the house. They didn't want to miss it.
- 23:38Speaker 4: And so we were going to head back to the
- 23:39Speaker 4: office and do that. But I said, before we do that,
- 23:41Speaker 4: I want to call the agent that has it listed
- 23:44Speaker 4: and ask her what the drywall cutouts were and whether
- 23:49Speaker 4: or not they'd be able to put the door trim
- 23:51Speaker 4: back on with the door. And so I called her
- 23:54Speaker 4: and I said, I think we must have scurried them
- 23:57Speaker 4: out of here. I said, there's still dishes in the sink.
- 24:00Speaker 4: There's still a swimsuit over the door and a dirty
- 24:03Speaker 4: diaper by the changing table. And She said, no, they're
- 24:06Speaker 4: gone for good. And I said, they left it this way.
- 24:10Speaker 4: And she said, unfortunately, yes. And I said, well, there's
- 24:13Speaker 4: like three pieces of drywall missing in that bedroom. And
- 24:17Speaker 4: she said, you haven't watched the news lately, have you?
- 24:21Speaker 4: And I said, no, I've actually been kind of busy.
- 24:24Speaker 4: And she said, well, those three holes in the wall,
- 24:29Speaker 4: she missed once. And I said, what do you mean
- 24:32Speaker 4: she missed once? She had shot a gun and killed
- 24:36Speaker 4: her husband in the bedroom, in bed. She hit twice,
- 24:41Speaker 4: but she missed once. So there was two together and
- 24:44Speaker 4: one over to the side. And she said the detectives
- 24:47Speaker 4: came down and had to cut those out to have evidence.
- 24:52Speaker 6: Oh, wow.
- 24:53Speaker 4: And I said, okay, I think I need to talk
- 24:55Speaker 4: with my clients and see if they're still interested in
- 24:58Speaker 4: the home.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Sure.
- 25:00Speaker 4: And.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Surprisingly, it didn't faze them. They still wanted the house.
- 25:06Speaker 4: And I told them everything that I knew about it
- 25:09Speaker 4: and they went forward with it. So it was a
- 25:11Speaker 4: great house for them. I don't think all clients would
- 25:15Speaker 4: feel that way. And especially seeing how it was left,
- 25:19Speaker 4: you know, it was obvious that she was arrested immediately.
- 25:23Speaker 4: And left just like it was. So, yeah, it wasn't
- 25:28Speaker 4: a haunting, but it was sure different.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Yeah, something a little eerie.
- 25:32Speaker 4: A little eerie going in there.
- 25:34Speaker 2: That we run into.
- 25:36Speaker 4: Well, yeah. If somebody has died in a home, you
- 25:38Speaker 4: get your clients and they're on either side of that.
- 25:41Speaker 4: I mean, most of them are either extremely one way
- 25:44Speaker 4: or the other. I mean, there's not usually too many people.
- 25:47Speaker 4: in the middle of like, Oh, maybe not. I don't know.
- 25:50Speaker 4: They're usually adamant of, no, I don't want to buy
- 25:53Speaker 4: a house where somebody has been murdered in or yeah.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Like these.
- 25:58Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 25:58Speaker 6: Yes.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Or paranormal.
- 26:00Speaker 4: Yes.
- 26:00Speaker 2: I mean, I think that's a perfect segue, you know,
- 26:03Speaker 2: is how can this affect market value? I think some buyers,
- 26:09Speaker 2: it affects them. Some buyers are like, I still want
- 26:12Speaker 2: the house.
- 26:13Speaker 6: I had one that I listed and we just, Made
- 26:16Speaker 6: sure it was in the disclosures that someone asphyxiated themselves
- 26:19Speaker 6: in the house.
- 26:20Speaker 3: And somebody still bought it.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Yeah. And I think with that, I mean, anytime it
- 26:25Speaker 2: comes to a disclosure issue, we always recommend that you
- 26:29Speaker 2: need to go back to whoever your agent is. Talk
- 26:31Speaker 2: to them and get their guidance on that, you know.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Right.
- 26:35Speaker 3: Because you can do inspections, you know, and you can
- 26:37Speaker 3: do appraisals.
- 26:38Speaker 2: That stuff doesn't necessarily show.
- 26:43Speaker 6: Up.
- 26:43Speaker 3: True. It's like, it's not always going to show up.
- 26:46Speaker 7: And you reminded me of a flip I passed up
- 26:48Speaker 7: on for that filling because it was shortly after a
- 26:52Speaker 7: landlord had murdered, or no, I'm sorry, the renter had
- 26:55Speaker 7: murdered the landlord.
- 26:56Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 26:56Speaker 3: And there was lots of blood splatter that I don't.
- 26:59Speaker 7: Know why at the time it wasn't cleaned up, why
- 27:01Speaker 7: they were able to show it.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Sure.
- 27:04Speaker 3: But, uh, I kind of wish I would have bought
- 27:06Speaker 3: it now.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Because it's actually a very classy, nice house.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 27:10Speaker 3: But I didn't buy it because that blood splatter just
- 27:13Speaker 3: did something to my mind.
- 27:15Speaker 6: Right.
- 27:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:16Speaker 7: Right. I wish I would have got over it because,
- 27:19Speaker 7: like we talked about, probably something bad is happening around.
- 27:22Speaker 3: It's maybe not that tragic.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:23Speaker 4: Sure. Well, when you get the older homes, you know, it's.
- 27:27Speaker 4: almost commonplace anymore. If you have a home that's over
- 27:29Speaker 4: 100 years old and that, usually people have passed away
- 27:33Speaker 4: that were owners at one time. They used to die
- 27:34Speaker 4: at home. And they used to. You're exactly right. Yes,
- 27:37Speaker 4: they'd come in the house and sit.
- 27:39Speaker 7: That's where the flowers back in the day came from,
- 27:41Speaker 7: was to hide the smell of the body when they
- 27:43Speaker 7: were out there.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Oh, I did not know that.
- 27:47Speaker 4: I did not either.
- 27:48Speaker 2: I'm going to.
- 27:49Speaker 6: Check with Dave on that one.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Oh, shoot. So I think with that, I think we've
- 27:57Speaker 2: pretty well covered it. We've given them some Halloween spooky
- 28:01Speaker 2: stories and kind of talked about how it may or
- 28:04Speaker 2: may not affect market value.
- 28:06Speaker 8: Right.
- 28:07Speaker 2: So for everyone out there, we recommend that you do take,
