- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, It is the 24th of
- 0:16April and I'm so glad to have your company because today we
- 0:20get to begin reading a wonderful letter.
- 0:23This is a letter written by that ever so relatable disciple
- 0:27Peter, who just acts with his gut and does the thing that we
- 0:32are all thinking but nobody else was going to do.
- 0:35Yeah, Peter, that wonderful disciple of Jesus, that close
- 0:38trusted ally in Jesus ministry. Here he is writing to the
- 0:44Christian Church as it spread out around that part of the
- 0:47world. You see, it was hard work being
- 0:49a Christian because wherever you were, you would be adopted into
- 0:53this new way of being, with this new way of relating to others
- 0:57and this new identity of this community of the church.
- 1:01And well, from the inside that looks all, you know, fine and
- 1:03dandy. But from the outside, if you're
- 1:05a neighbour of one of these new Christians, they just seem
- 1:08antisocial and weird and rude and like they've just forgotten
- 1:12everything that's important. And so there was a lot of
- 1:15pressure on new Christians by their old friends, by their
- 1:18neighbours, by their communities to say, stop this madness.
- 1:22Come back to your old ways, come back to your old community and
- 1:25just be a part of us the way you used to be.
- 1:28And so here Peter writes to the new Christian saying, stand
- 1:32firm. Stand firm in your new faith and
- 1:35continue to to love and care for your fellow brothers and sisters
- 1:40in Christ. So in the 1st century, this call
- 1:44to be faithful to God's people and this new way of life is just
- 1:48as important as it is to us these days.
- 1:52So why don't you join me, friends, as we travel back to
- 1:55this new growing church? And how on earth do we fit in as
- 1:59Christians in a secular world as we read together First Peter
- 2:03chapter 1. This letter is from Peter, an
- 2:16apostle of Jesus Christ. I'm writing to God's chosen
- 2:21people who are living as foreigners and the provinces of
- 2:24Pontius, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bethania.
- 2:29God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and His
- 2:34Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed Him
- 2:39and have been cleansed by the blood of Christ Jesus.
- 2:43May God give you more and more grace and peace.
- 2:48All praise to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2:52It is by His great mercy that we have been born again.
- 2:56Because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead.
- 3:00Now we live with great expectation and we have a
- 3:03priceless inheritance, an inheritance that is kept in
- 3:07heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of
- 3:11change and decay. And through your faith God is
- 3:15protecting you by His power until you receive the salvation
- 3:20which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.
- 3:25So be truly glad there is wonderful joy ahead, even though
- 3:30you must endure many trials for this little while.
- 3:34These trials will show that your faith is genuine.
- 3:37It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold, though your
- 3:42faith is far more precious than mere gold.
- 3:46So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it
- 3:49will bring you much praise and glory and honour.
- 3:53On the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world, you
- 3:58love Him even though you have never seen Him.
- 4:01Though you do not see Him now, you trust Him and you rejoice
- 4:06with the glorious, inexpressible joy.
- 4:10The reward for trusting Him will be the salvation of your souls.
- 4:16This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know
- 4:19more about. When they prophesied about this
- 4:21gracious salvation prepared for you, they wondered what time or
- 4:26situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about.
- 4:30When He told them in advance about Christ's suffering and His
- 4:34great glory. Afterward, they were told that
- 4:38their messages were not for themselves, but for you.
- 4:41And now this good news has been announced to you by those who
- 4:46preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.
- 4:50It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching
- 4:54these things happen. So prepare your minds for action
- 5:00and exercise self control. Put all your hope and the
- 5:05gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is
- 5:09revealed to the world. So you must live as God's
- 5:13obedient children. Don't slip back into your old
- 5:16ways of living to satisfy your own desires.
- 5:20You didn't know any better then, but now you must be holy in
- 5:25everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.
- 5:30For the scriptures say you must be holy because I am holy.
- 5:36And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no
- 5:40favourites. He will judge or reward you
- 5:43according to what you do. So you must live in reverend
- 5:47fear of Him during your time here as temporary residents.
- 5:51For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the
- 5:55empty life you inherited from your ancestors, and it was not
- 5:59paid with mere gold or silver which lose their value.
- 6:03It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless
- 6:08Lamb of God. God chose Him as your ransom
- 6:13long before the world began, but now in these last days, He has
- 6:18been revealed for your sake through Christ.
- 6:22You have come to trust in God, and you have placed your faith
- 6:26and hope in God because He raised Christ from the dead and
- 6:31gave Him great glory. You were cleansed from your sins
- 6:35when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love
- 6:39to each other as brothers and sisters.
- 6:43Love each other deeply with all your heart, for you have been
- 6:47born again, but not to a life that will quickly end.
- 6:51Your new life will last forever because it comes from the
- 6:55eternal living Word of God. As the Scriptures say, people
- 7:02are like grass. Their beauty is like a flower in
- 7:05the field. The grass Withers and the flower
- 7:09fades, but the word of the Lord remains forever.
- 7:14And that word is the good news that was preached to you.
- 7:18Are Jesus here? Peter refers to our lives on
- 7:32earth as being of temporary residence.
- 7:37Ah, you know, when we live our life, it doesn't feel
- 7:39particularly temporary. It's a long time that we're
- 7:42here, but Lord give us that eternal perspective that as we
- 7:47make decisions, as we choose between different options that
- 7:52we would make our choices in the light of eternity with you as
- 7:57our Lord and you gathering us to yourself to live in your
- 8:02presence. Oh what a beautiful, wonderful
- 8:06gift that is. Would continue to raise that
- 8:10through the different levels of complexity in our mind as we go
- 8:15about our daily lives so that it continually reaches the top and
- 8:19it is what bubbles over to shape the way that we live our lives.
- 8:24Knowing full well that you have already saved us and thank you
- 8:28that we are permanent residents of your Kingdom and your family,
- 8:35and that this identity branded on our hearts will always remain
- 8:41no matter what. What a loving, generous God you
- 8:45are, and we thank you and we pray all of this in the name of
- 8:49Jesus, Amen.
