- 0:00Mooser, Lombardi and Kane. All right, let's send out to ramos Law
- 0:16Hot lying car accident, ramos Law Medical Doctor, and Serny ramos Law dot
- 0:20com. And we are joined now by Jeff Lakewalld of ESPN dot com.
- 0:25Hi, Leggy, how are things? How are you good? Uh?
- 0:30We're just trying to parse some things out here of this Broncos offseason and a
- 0:36couple of things, you know. Paul Allen, the Vikings play by play
- 0:40voice, was on a podcast talking about how Sean Payton seems to be enamored
- 0:46with JJ McCarthy. But we've heard this about multiple quarterbacks. Do you trust
- 0:50anything that comes out this time of year because this is NFL lying season.
- 0:55I've always called it the lion season. But uh, you know, it
- 1:00depends who tells me. I guess is how I praise it. The folks,
- 1:04and even folks I've known for thirty some years. We'll stretch the truth
- 1:10a bit before the draft. Sometimes so depends who tells me. I refuse
- 1:17over the years to believe much of the so and so is enamored with so
- 1:22and so, especially from a coach. Most coaches don't even get involved in
- 1:27the draft tape until January, you know, mid January, late January.
- 1:34So to become enamored in two weeks is a little bit of a stretch for
- 1:38me. Now, after the combine, you start to hear things, you
- 1:44know, as people sit down face to face, especially quarterbacks. The combine
- 1:49is the first chance for coaches to put quarterbacks either on the white board or
- 1:53to let them look at the video and really go over some specific things.
- 2:00Know better than anybody because this is your business. These are some major high
- 2:02stakes the world of NFL drafts and who you're enamored with and so on.
- 2:08This kind of information two months before the draft does not get out. Jobs
- 2:15are at stake, big money, the future of many people's careers. Trust
- 2:20me, and I know you know this. No one's John Payton's not walking
- 2:24around Vegas during Super Bowl week telling people I love me some JJ McCarthy.
- 2:30No matter who it is, that stuff doesn't happen. It also could be
- 2:32subterfuge. You've seen that before, haven't you. Hey, let's let people
- 2:37know we like this guy and then run the end around. Oh yeah,
- 2:42no. It's one of the Broncos' biggest was when the year they drafted Klady
- 2:51they kept bringing the running back in over and over for visits and medicals and
- 2:57all the rest of it, and you know, the running back eventually went
- 3:01to Carolina. I'm having a little senior moment with the name. But uh,
- 3:07but that's that's one of the biggest Yeah, that's done all the time.
- 3:09You know. Now, when teams are in the war room during the
- 3:15draft weekend, you will have coaches and personnel people think they know what a
- 3:21team's gonna do because they've they believe they have information like that. But at
- 3:28this point, this is way too early. I mean, the Senior Bowl
- 3:32is kind of a gossip capital of the world too. So some of this
- 3:36is like the telephone game. Somebody says during practice, hey, I like
- 3:40those three throws in the seven on seven period, and a week later it
- 3:46becomes enamored with you know, yeah, no, So that's some of that
- 3:53is happening too. A lot of people are at the Senior Bowl, a
- 3:57lot of people are mingling at the Senior Bowl, and a lot of things
- 4:00get sad, and you know, a couple of weeks later, it's it
- 4:04turns into something it wasn't when it was said. By the way, Jonathan
- 4:09Jeff is who are you looking for? Yeah, that's it. Jonathan's that's
- 4:13the guy. Are you are you go ahead? Much? Rock? I
- 4:19apologize? Are you preparing to go to the Underwear Olympics? Is your ticket
- 4:25booked? Are you ready to go? It? What? It starts in?
- 4:28What? Four days or something like that? I believe Tuesday is the
- 4:31first official day, but a lot of people but yeah, no, it's
- 4:38uh. I'd hate for I like to believe they can't have it without me,
- 4:42but I know that's not the case. How many how many years straight
- 4:46for you at the combine? Though? How many? How many years in
- 4:47a row? Is this? Or how many of how many decades? Nineteen
- 4:53eighty seven was my first combine, the first one in Indy. I've been
- 4:58to all of them since Lakey. Can I give you you? Just tell
- 5:04me if I'm being way too I guess hyper focused on something because it started
- 5:11with Sean Payton. Of course, you're going to bring in guys from your
- 5:14old regime that you trust, Okay, and then there's more that's coming over
- 5:16this year with Pete Carmichael and et cetera. When you hear like Sean Payton's
- 5:21looking for the next Drew Brees. Is there too narrow of a net on
- 5:26this stuff? Can you really replicate the success from a previous team when so
- 5:30many different things are happening in your division? Like Mahomes? If you want
- 5:35to find the next Drew Brees, but Lamar Jackson a clone of him is
- 5:39at twelve, would you pass on that because it's not the skill set that
- 5:42you like. You would hope teams wouldn't be so close minded, But it
- 5:47does happen in the NFL. Do you think Peyton's that way? Well,
- 5:51I mean, if you're getting rid of Russell Wilson, there is a bit
- 5:55of that going on. I mean, can I've asked, I mean,
- 5:59can anyone honestly say the Broncos committed, fully committed the playbook to Russell Wilson?
- 6:05I would say no. I would say the quarterback, yes, has
- 6:11shortcomings. Russell has shortcomings. Russell has things he needs to change to work
- 6:15on, et cetera. But they're still not gonna have a better quarterback than
- 6:20him in twenty twenty four. So is there a worst going on? Is
- 6:27there a world? Because they have to pay him regardless, they got to
- 6:30pay him next year. No matter what I brought this up earlier this week.
- 6:33If they said, Okay, we'll pay you hang around. We're not
- 6:39gonna let you go get another job, We're not gonna cut you next year.
- 6:41We're gonna pay you. We're gonna pay you, You're gonna hang around.
- 6:45And if they did that, obviously it would prohibit him from continuing his
- 6:48career and reviving his career, so he probably won't be happy with that.
- 6:54The Broncos are looking at it as why not keep him around? If he
- 6:56really wants out, then maybe he'll play ball and restructures, find a way
- 7:00to get out of it for lesser money. Could that happen? You know,
- 7:05if you're the Broncos, you want to threaten that, if you want
- 7:09him to play ball with you, you know, say. I think a
- 7:14lot of the the discourse from the Broncos, especially Sean Payton's choreographed tour super
- 7:19Bowl week, was to me to keep some semblance of trade value on the
- 7:26table that they might keep him. I look, I haven't spoken to Russellson
- 7:31shortly after the season, but I have spoken to many people who are close
- 7:36to him, and he doesn't think he's coming back. He doesn't think that
- 7:43scenario is going to happen, and if any you know, I stood in
- 7:46the locker room and heard him talk about how much he wanted to raise his
- 7:50family in that house, and he put the house up for sale. So
- 7:55to me, in his mind, this is over. So But yeah,
- 8:00until the Broncos make it official, we always have to give the sliver of
- 8:05possibility to other things happening. But I do think a lot of what's been
- 8:09said, you know, only the Broncos have said he'd be amenable to coming
- 8:16back. We haven't heard any of that sourced in any way from you.
- 8:24If you have to pay him anyway, who cares. If he's happy about
- 8:28it, who cares? What does that Sam? He didn't bench himself,
- 8:33Vic, I mean the Broncos were obviously done with him already. They set
- 8:39this table themselves. So to go back now and say, oh, never
- 8:43mind, uh, I think that would be something that Broncos aren't willing to
- 8:48do. Jeff, I'm gonna let the Great Brent Kaine say it, but
- 8:54we've tried to laid out to Vic for the last two days in a row
- 8:58and he just won't listen. Brett put it as succinctly as you possibly can.
- 9:05They hate each other. They hate him, he hates them. There
- 9:11is hate. Bye. That's that. You can't be any more clear than
- 9:16that. Figure you come up with all these scenarios these well what if they
- 9:20what if they threatened to bench him and they put them in the quarterback room
- 9:22but they made them sit away from the other quarterbacks in the corner and really
- 9:26try to stick it to them. It doesn't do anybody any good. May
- 9:28the money and be done. But Jet's been around the league a long time.
- 9:31There are people that hate each other that still work together all that time.
- 9:35Yeah, that I would never say that. That means never that.
- 9:41There are plenty of people that won Super Bowls that didn't speak to each other.
- 9:45So I mean that's that's that stuff goes on all the time. Yes,
- 9:48But my opinion, Vick is the Broncos have made their decision and but
- 9:54are trying to even though there may be a one percent or a half a
- 10:01percent chance that they can alleviate some of this financial pain. I think they're
- 10:07trying to figure out a way to do that. Could you find a trade
- 10:11partner if you foot some of the bill or most of the bill, you
- 10:16know, any of that stuff. I think they're trying to alleviate as much
- 10:20of the pain as they can because they know it's going to be painful,
- 10:26and they still are poised to do it. I mean, it's easy to
- 10:30forget right now. But I mean George Peyton right after the season said it
- 10:35will be an extreme move. That was the word he used, extreme,
- 10:39and it is. It's the most extreme move any team's ever made with a
- 10:45quarterback. So but if you were going to keep him around, you wouldn't
- 10:50have benched him. I mean, they scored sixteen and he stood there and
- 10:54watched them score sixteen and fourteen points, two of their four lowest scoring games
- 11:00of the season, after being told he was the problem. So, uh
- 11:05yeah, I don't Yeah, it could work, but I don't see it
- 11:11happening right now, And until somebody I trust tells me differently. That's gonna
- 11:16be my view on this. Is there a hate him he hates them?
- 11:22Is there? Any way? Though? Because I was reading that the cap
- 11:26which goes up almost every year, the exception of the COVID stuff and everything
- 11:28else, but almost every year the cap goes up, it's gonna make a
- 11:31pretty sizable jump. It was a shade under two twenty five million this year,
- 11:35and some reports have it as close as like two hundred and fifty around
- 11:39two hundred and fifty million. If you take like a twenty to twenty five
- 11:43million dollar jump in the cap, that should at least ease some of the
- 11:46problems of the money you're losing. But the problem is other teams are now
- 11:50taking advantage of the extra money that you can't. Right, Well, here's
- 11:56the deal. This is all you need to know about how painful this is
- 12:00going to be. When, if, and when they release him. Their
- 12:05quarterback room costs forty two million dollars against the cap, and they will have
- 12:11one player Jared Skiddham in that room. Oh my lord, So don't tell
- 12:18me, you know, I'm so tired of hearing people, even on this
- 12:22station say all the salaries to save us the dead money. Bab blah blah.
- 12:26No, the quarterback room's at forty two million the minute he's gone,
- 12:31and you have one player in the room, Jared Stidham. So you tell
- 12:35me that when the quarterback's room is over fifty approaching sixty million, that that's
- 12:43helping you win. Yeah, Well, can you help us though, because
- 12:46we've been wondering this for a couple of weeks and we don't have an answer
- 12:48to this. Uh, definitively yes yet. So we know the money that
- 12:54counts against the cap for the Broncos. But for Russell's money that he gets
- 12:58to take home, he's going to be owed. What's the numbers again,
- 13:01VICTI, you remember the thirty nine million dollars next year? Thirty nine million
- 13:05next year? Does he get that money or yes? Okay, yeah,
- 13:09no dead money? No the year after sorry, what about next year?
- 13:13The year after twenty five money? Does he get that money or is that
- 13:18just paper trail money that the Broncos have to run from that cap? My
- 13:22understanding is paper trail the guaranteed money left on the deal right now if he
- 13:28if he was on the roster at certain dates, more guaranteed money kicks in
- 13:31and all of that stuff. That's what we're wanting. It's why dead money
- 13:37is different. Yes, you can adjust the salary cap, and yes you
- 13:41can fix some contracts and all of that. I get that, But dead
- 13:45money is a different thing. And they already have almost ten million dead money
- 13:50on the books that people are not talking about because they got tired of Randy
- 13:54Gregory, just like they got tired of Russell Wilson. So they are have
- 13:58to quit signing guys they get tired of, or they're going to have to
- 14:03figure out a way to keep them. I think I think my I think
- 14:07my life goal from this point on, Cater Jeff, I think my life
- 14:09goal would be somebody's dead money. Okay, I just I just want to
- 14:13be somebody's dead money. Just find a way, find a way for me
- 14:16to be dead money on somebody's salary cap. You know, just work me
- 14:20in there, just a little bit, whatever, whatever it takes. I'll
- 14:24be out of your site. You know, you have to look at me,
- 14:26don't talk to me. I'll just be dead money. Let me put
- 14:30this. When the Rocky Mountain News said see you later to all of us,
- 14:33I didn't get any damn money, so that didn't count against their cap.
- 14:39Yeah, exactly. Well, technically is it all money dead? It's
- 14:43not alive. It's just a piece of paper. It's it's it's a digital
- 14:46transaction, So money is dead to begin with. Money is inviserable to me?
- 14:52Who are you kidding? Like, like, I gotta tell you something.
- 14:56I'm going to use this for the rest of my life. Now here's
- 15:00the free agency goal. You guys, ready, all the gms in the
- 15:03league, pay attention and heed the words of Jeff Lagweld. Stop signing guys,
- 15:07you get tired of there? How does that sound? I mean,
- 15:11beautiful strategy. Here's the thing, if you know, I think one of
- 15:18the most telling things I've uncovered in all of this messing around in the past
- 15:24few weeks is the Broncos have made three draft picks inside the top forty five
- 15:31picks in the last four drafts combined. Geez, geez, you want to
- 15:37know why they're in trouble. That's it right there, and people want them
- 15:41to send a boatload of picks to move up in the draft. Are you
- 15:46kidding me? This team has made three picks inside the top forty five in
- 15:54four drafts and they don't have a second rounder this year, so the total
- 15:58is going to be four picks inside the top forty five in the last five
- 16:07drafts. So you tell me the quick solution that's waiting out there for the
- 16:12local franchise. Jeff Blakewell, the ESPN I commy joins us every Thursday.
- 16:18Thank you, leg you always appreciate the time. Always never sign people you
- 16:22get tired of that's the bottom it exactly, and trying to be somebody,
- 16:27try to be somebody's dead money. Ups. Yeah, I'm over for one,
- 16:30so I can't talk about that. I see it leg all right.
- 16:34All conversations with Jeff Lagwell brought to you. I Bet Save Colorado, the
